PHILADELPHIA – More than eight years after U.S. Roman Catholic bishops vowed swift action to keep potential abusers from young people, the Philadelphia archdiocese has suspended 21 priests named as child molestation suspects in a scathing grand jury report. The suspensions came on Tuesday, the eve of Lent, the Christian period for penance leading up to Easter. The priests, whose names haven’t been released, have been removed from ministry while their cases are
reviewed, Cardinal Justin Rigali said. “These have been difficult weeks since the release of the grand jury report,” Rigali said in a statement. “Difficult most of all for victims of sexual abuse but also for all Catholics and for everyone in our community.” The two-year grand jury investigation into priest abuse in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia resulted in charges against two priests, a former priest and a Catholic school teacher who are accused of raping boys. And in an unprecedented move in the United States, a former high-ranking church offi-
cial was accused of transferring problem priests to new parishes without warning anyone of prior sex abuse complaints. Since 2002, when the national abuse crisis erupted in the Archdiocese of Boston, American dioceses have barred hundreds of accused clergy members from public church work or removed them permanently from the priesthood. Bali News Not taken back by owner within 14 days Stray dogs will be eliminated Denpasar (Bali Post)—
In fiscal year 2011, Bali Provincial Government plans to build a detention cage of stray dogs in 723 villages in Bali. Development of the stray dog ’jailhouse’ facilities posed one of the efforts to diminish the spread of rabies disease triggered by bites of stray dogs. If within 14 days after being put into the detention cage the stray dogs were not taken back by the owner, the dog would be eliminated. Head of Bali Animal Husbandry Services, I Putu Sumantra, told Bali Post about the matter Tuesday (Mar 8). According to Sumantra, provision to eliminate those stray dogs that were not taken back by the owners was set forth in Regional Regulation No: 15/2009 (about rabies prevention—Ed). If declared free from rabies after pass-
ing through the screening, the owner was allowed take back the dog to be looked after again. However, the owner had to pay a fee as compensation for medical expenses spent by government during the dog was in detention cage. Government also gave opportunity to dog lovers to adopt the stray dogs that were not taken back by the owner by refunding the cost of care during the dogs was in detention cage. ”If within 14 days after the dog was put into detention cage is not taken back by the owner and none adopted it, then the dog will be eliminated. Therefore, elimination is the final measure,” he said. When in detention cage, the cost of dog care would be the responsibility of regency/city government throughout Bali. Meanwhile, the Bali Provincial Govern-
ment was merely responsible for building the cage facility of stray dogs where one unit would be built at each village. It was also said, the construction of a cage was estimated to cost IDR 1.2 million and it would be funded by the Bali Regional Budget. Then, the total amount required to build the stray dog cage reached approximately IDR 867 million. ”The development of detention cage for stray dogs at each village is also mandated by Regional Regulation No: 15/2009,” he said. Furthermore, Sumantra reminded the dog owners to take care of their dogs well and did not let them roam around the streets. If the officers conducting the searches happened to find the dog wandering around the streets and did not use rabies vaccination necklace tag, then the officers
were entitled to catch the dog and put it in detention cage. In other words, they were categorized into stray dogs. ”I do hope the dog owners are willing to put their pet dog into a cage properly and do
not let them roam around the streets so as not to be arrested by the officers,” he said while adding that field officers undertook the tasks based on existing regional regulations. (kmb13)

Indonesia has a very extensive and diverse cultural richness, in which each has a uniqueness, distinctiveness and identity influenced by traditions of supporting community as formation of national identity. ”But in reality, the values of indigenous wisdom tend to be progressively marginalized,” said Director General of Cultural Values, Art and Film, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Ukus Kuswara, on the performance and art dialogue in Jakarta, Tuesday (Mar 8). Responding the conditions occurred, said Ukus, it was required wise attitude and tangible action of all walks of life including government, artists, humanist as well as stakeholders. He considered that traditional art was one of the existing art domains whose existence set to be ignored as shifted by technological development. It was feared to cause a shift in values and transfer of art function either as entertainment, religious or social functions. Even, some types of art with cultural values of tradition retaining the values of indigenous wisdom showed a tendency to be increasingly abandoned by their supporting
communities. Meanwhile, there were also some arts showing stagnation and even coming into extinction. Through the dialogue, Ukus hoped, it could give an idea about the concept or an evident direction for cultural development, chiefly for the arts, so that it could be implemented into the program of events. The problems concerning with the development of arts could be caused by the sluggishness of the performers themselves, less concern of the supporting community, lack of a forum or medium to express the traditional arts or lack of effective training programs provided by government. Similarly, he hoped the input of practitioners and cultural experts to find solutions for resolving the problems on the increasingly weakening existence of traditional performing arts in a global era would not result in the Indonesian arts becoming a stranger in their home country. Ukus requested all art perpetrators of Indonesia to start invigorate the traditional arts as a product of creative economy which in the future could give contribution to regionally generated revenue (PAD) and support the preservation of local arts. A series of Panca Wali Krama Penyegjeg Jagat ritual in Mount Raung Temple on March 23, 2011, was also filled with melaspas (inauguration) and mendem pedagingan (religious foundation implant) ritual on Wednesday (Mar 9). The procession was preceded by holy water invocation and picking-up ritual to deities throughout Bali. Chairman of Ritual Committe, Nyoman Tunjung, said the processions of melaspas and mendem pedagingan would be attended by a number of figures and invitees of government officers. In preparing for the melaspas and mendem pedagingan ritual on Tuesday (Mar 8), hundreds of devotees both from Taro Village and devotional workers from a number of agencies including the Gianyar Government took part in the preparation of melaspas and mendem pedagingan procession. A number of customary village apparatus of Besakih Temple and temple priests looked to carry the holy water of deities in Besakih Temple. Attention and appreciation of devotees since
the very beginning of the Penyegjeg Jagat ritual was indeed very high due to the existence of Mount Raung Temple at Taro Village, Tegallalang, Gianyar, posed one of the oldest temples in Bali that closely related to the pilgrimage of Maharishi Markandeya, initiating the island life of Bali. From the Mount Raung Temple the maharishi established the Besakih Temple that previously preceded by implanting five metal foundation. One of the committee members, I Made Wisersa, said it was one of the greatest rituals in Bali whose oblation required the use of animals consisting of 16 buffalos, 33 goats, 1 deer, 1 antelope and so forth. The ritual itself aimed to put in contact with the Supreme God as embodiment of devotion to Him, purify the macrocosm and microcosm, raise awareness of Hindu Dharma devotees on the important role, function and history of the Mount Raung Temple. The temple was an appropriate sanctum to search for tranquility and peace of mind because the temple was the abode of Maharishi Markandya in building Bali. (kmb16)

Fuel stock in Bali stays in safe condition Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Though the supply of fuel in a number of regions was disturbed, the authority of Pertamina Bali claimed the fuel stocks, particularly Premium category, at public petrol stations in Bali remained in a safe condition.

Sales Representative of the Pertamina Fuel Retails for Bali-NTB Region, B. Indra Lesmana, said the stock at Pesanggaran and Manggis Depot such as Premium reached 17,304 kiloliters, diesel fuel (13,790 kiloliters), Pertamax (4,324 kiloliters), and Biofame (1,276 kiloliters). ”Fuel distribution to some petrol stations remains flourishing. There are no significant spikes in demand and stays in a safe condition. Even, the Premium category is still sufficient to meet the needs for the next 23 days,” said Indra in Denpasar Tuesday (Mar 8). It was also said the distribution of fuel supplies for Bali, such as Premium, Pertamax, and diesel fuel was in controlled condition. Pertamina had been trying in advance in order the fuel
supplies in Bali remained in controlled condition. ”Probably, what happened in Klungkung had something to do with delivery order (DO) that conssequently affected the other retail outlets. In essence, the distribution of stock runs smoothly,” he said. Indra was optimistic that jump in demand would not affect the existing supplies. Pertamina would set up mechanisms for ordering fuel from depots of Pertamina to petrol stations so that fuel delivery would be smooth and did not diminish the quality of service to consumers.”Pertamina will continue to consolidate the work by preparing supplies in sufficient quantities so that it will not lead to scarcity,” he said. On the other side, one of the petrol station operators, Wiryanata, stated there was no problem about the de-
livery order. Even, his party remained to have delivery order that had not been conveyed. As a result, gasoline stocks declined. So far, it was unknown for sure about the reasons for delay in supply. ”The supply of fuel last week was indeed sluggish. We do hope the conditions occurred in Klungkung would not occur here, because it would really harm people,” he said. Admittedly, his party had prepared a Premium stock of approximately 15-20 tons per day, 10-15 tons of dieasel fuel per day and 4 tons of Pertamax per day. ”The availability of Premium, diesel fuel and Pertamax is highly depending on Pertamina. If delivery order and delivery runs smoothly, then the society will be guaranteed to get the fuel required,” he said. (par)
Foreign Couple Robbed in Candidasa Amlapura (Bali Post) –
Last Tuesday (8/3) Karangasem Police Public Relation, Police Commissioner Wayan Wirata, confirmed married English couple David Nett (69) – Janette Marlyn (69) was victimized in their own staying place, Sangrila Candidasa Hotel. Wirata stated some US Dollar cash placed inside their room’s safety box were robbed and the case is on investigation. Victim explained that on Sunday (6/3) evening they were out to walk outside the hotel. Around 9 pm they got back and found the safety box was opened. After
checked, as much as USD 300 and GBP 40 vanished causing the couple loss IDR 3.26 million. The incident was reported a day late (Monday 7/3) by victims. It is suspected a fake key was used to break the safety box although police can’t summarize yet if the robber’s an employee or not. Meanwhile for foreign tourists visiting Karangasem seemed no longer safe as a number of them have been victims of robberies or pick pockets. As one of the biggest Real Regional Income (PAD) contributor for Gianyar, the hotel like tourist cottages Ubud Hanging Garden located at Buahan Village, Payangan, is threaten to be sealed by the Gianyar Government as it hasn’t fulfilled its obligation to renew its permits 10 months ago. “Tomorrow (9/3-red) if nothing still done to ensure its permit renewals, we will seal it,” Head of Gianyar Police Civil Service Data and Evaluation Section, Alit Adnyana, clarified after supervising the location. On 6th July 2010 and 11th February 2011, Gianyar Police Civil Service have brought warning letters for the management as each cottage’s Building (IMB), Operational and Business Place/Interference (SITU/HO) permits have expired on April 2010. Ida Bagus Gaga Adi Saputra, Head of Gianyar Regency Permit Services (BPPT) stated this is the last resort as several approaches towards the management seemed ignored. “The Regent himself also approached the management on this yet there were no good responds from them. The long thundery pouring rain last Monday (7/3) afternoon until evening have brought disasters to Jembrana as two houses were attacked by lightning while one by a giant rock. One of the lightning hit Husni’s (35) house located at Banjar Tengah, Air Kuning Village, Jembrana at 5.30 pm. Due to the striking event, a number of electronic devices were damaged and windows were broken to pieces. Another one hits Made Sudarsa’s (55) house at Banjar/Village Yeh Kuning, Jembrana at 7 pm. The
house’s ceilings cracked opened, television was destroyed, light switches also the electricity’s measurement device were damaged. Sudarsa admitted he doesn’t have enough money to fix the measurement device as his work as fisherman hasn’t been resulting lately. “I am unemployed,” he stated. Batuagung, Jembrana. The farmer’s kitchen was hit by a 3.5 meter diameter rock falling from a hill in the east of the house. Sutrama and family were shocked as they thought it was a thunder. Luckily there were no casualties yet Sutarma admitted experiencing IDR 25 million loss. The location was then visited by Jembrana House of Representatives Head, I Ketut Sugiasa, last Tuesday (8/3) afternoon. He stated will coordinate with Public Works Agency to find a solution in handling this giant rock and also donated for the victim. (120)

SYDNEY – Australian anti-immigration firebrand Pauline Hanson confirmed Wednesday she is attempting a political comeback by standing in a state election this month. In a surprise move, Hanson — who once famously warned that Australia was at risk of being “swamped by Asians” — is running for an upper house seat with a group of independents in the New South Wales poll on March 26. The former One Nation party chief told Fairfax Radio Network that it was “in the people’s interest of New South Wales to ensure that I am on the floor”, though she conceded that it would be a “battle” to get elected. Hanson drew international condemnation but briefly won domestic support in the 1990s with her anti-immigration and trade protection policies, before losing her seat in 1998. She spent several weeks in jail in 2003 for fraudulently spending electoral funds before the judgment was overturned. She insisted on Wednesday that she was “not racist”. “No one can ever comment or make a comment on any racist statement I have ever said,” she told the radio show. “I have... as an Australian... a right to question immigration and
multiculturalism, which I don’t believe is helping our country.” Hanson said she believed in “people coming here, assimilating, becoming Australians” and abiding by Australian laws. “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that,” she said. The 56-year-old said Australia’s major political parties feared her because “they know I’ve always spoken out, I expose them for what they are”. In 2007, she ran unsuccessfully for a national Senate seat, calling for an end to immigration by Muslims to protect “Australian culture”. Two years later, Hanson blamed her failure in the Queensland state election on the publication of raunchy photos purportedly taken by an ex-boyfriend. The pictures turned out to be of another woman. Hanson announced in November that she had decided to stay in Australia, abandoning plans to move to Britain because “it’s overrun with immigrants and refugees”. She also said France was also inundated with foreigners. The former fish and chip shop owner had earlier said she was emigrating to Britain due to disillusionment with Australia’s immigration and trade policies.

The army stormed the Sanaa University campus hours after thousands of inmates rioted at the central prison in the capital, taking a dozen guards hostage and calling for President Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down. At least one prisoner was killed and 80 people were wounded
as the guards fought to control the situation, police said. Yemen has been rocked by weeks of protests against Saleh, inspired by recent uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia that drove out those nations’ leaders. Saleh, a key U.S. ally in the campaign against al-Qaida, has been in power 32 years. In a sign that the protests are gaining traction, graffiti calling for Saleh to step down surfaced Tuesday in his birthplace, village of Sanhan, for the first time since the protests began. Students at Sanaa University have been sleeping on campus since midFebruary, shortly after the start of the protests calling for the country’s
president to step down. Medical officials said many of the 98 people wounded were in serious condition. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to release the information. Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

S. Korea’s Shanghai consulate hit by sex scandal Agence France Presse
SEOUL – South Korea’s government said Wednesday it has launched an investigation into an alleged steamy sex-for-favours scandal that has rocked its consulate in Shanghai. Media reports say three Korean diplomats based in China’s biggest city were suspected of having affairs with the same Chinese woman, who allegedly used her influence over them in seeking visas for Chinese workers. She was also said to have received confidential information such as mobile phone numbers for leading members of South Korea’s ruling party and other high-profile figures. The case of what one paper described as the “sexy Shanghai siren” hit the headlines this week. “Acting on tip-offs, we investigated the incident and gave the results to government agencies concerned last month,” an official of the Prime Minister’s Office told AFP. The three agencies that sent the diplomats to Shanghai — the foreign, knowledge economy and justice ministries — are now conducting their own investigations, he said on condition of anonymity.Reports say the tip-off came from the Korean husband of the Chinese woman, who wrote to the Seoul government to complain about the diplomats’ allegedly intimate relations with his wife. He presented pictures of her taken
with each of the diplomats, which have now been splashed across front pages in Seoul. The three — who were summoned back to Seoul — have denied they had affairs with the woman, who reportedly acted as a conduit to senior Chinese officials and arranged meetings with visitors from Seoul. In November 2008 she reportedly used her influence so that Beijing allowed 11 North Korean escapees who took refugee at the consular office to leave for Seoul en masse. Newspapers focused on the alleged favours provided by the diplomats. The Korea JoongAng Daily, in an editorial headlined “The scandal in Shanghai”, said the case “sounds like a steamy soap opera involving infidelity, secrets and a femme fatale”. It called on the government to “correct the moral standards of our diplomats” and fix problems associated with visa issuance.

TOKYO – A magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit northeastern Japan on Wednesday, shaking buildings hundreds of miles away in Tokyo and prompting the country’s meteorological agency to issue a tsunami warning for the coast. There were no immediate reports of significant damage or injuries. Japanese officials said they were still assessing the situation and telling residents along the coast to stay away from the shore. The meteorological agency said the quake hit at 11:45 a.m. local time Wednesday and was centered about 90 miles (150 kilometers) off the northeastern coast — about 270 miles (440 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo — at a depth of about 6.2 miles (10 kilometers). A 24-inch (60-centimeter) tsunami reached the coastal town of Ofunato, in Iwate prefecture, shortly after noon. The meteorological agency warned that a tsunami of about 20 inches (50 centimeters) would hit the coast. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said a Pacific-wide tsunami was not expected. “We have confirmed that small tsunami have come up on the shores, but we have no reports of damage at this point,” said Shinobu Nagano, an emergency and disaster response official in Iwate prefecture. “We are still trying to determine the impact of the quake.” Some train lines in the area were temporarily stopped after the quake, but they were restarted shortly after noon. There was a 6.3 magnitude aftershock shortly after the main quake, the meteorological agency said. Indonesia, Philippines boost joint anti-terror fight Agence France-Presse
JAKARTA - Indonesia and the Philippines on Tuesday pledged to boost cooperation in the fight against terror during the first visit to Jakarta by Philippine President Benigno Aquino. The two leaders also explored economic opportunities and witnessed the signing of bilateral agreements on education, sports and combatting transnational crimes. Indonesia has been rocked by a series of bombings in recent years staged by Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), including the 2002 Bali bombings which killed 202 people.
JI is a Southeast Asian extremist group inspired by Al-Qaeda. Its ultimate goal is to unite Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore and the southern Philippines into a fundamentalist Islamic state, using terrorist attacks to destabilise existing governments. The Philippines faces insurgencies including a rebellion since 1978 by the 12,000-strong Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), which seeks an independent Muslim state on the island of Mindanao.

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s dry season will start in most areas around May-June, earlier than the previous forecast of July and offering a timely boost to the country’s agricultural and mineral sectors, the weather bureau said on Tuesday. The dry season normally runs from April to Sept/Oct, but the country is in the middle of a wetter-thanexpected rainy season that has affected plantation crops and could hit resource exploitation. “The dry season will start in 65 zones in May, while 68 zones or 30.9 percent will enter the dry season in June,” Sri Woro, head of the Climatology, Meteorology and Geophysics Agency , told a news conference. Indonesia’s sprawling archipelago is divided into 220 weather zones. The agency in January forecast Indonesia would have rains until June, and that the dry season would not start in most areas until July. Areas that will start the dry season in May include Riau, north Sumatra and Jambi, Indonesia’s key palm oil- and rubber- producing areas, the agency said. Indonesia is the world’s top producer of palm oil and world’s second largest producer of rubber. Robusta coffee-growing area of Lampung and key cocoa-growing area of South Sulawesi will also start
the dry season in May, which will be in time for the main cocoa and coffee harvest season. The drier weather will help coffee cherries to ripe and prevent spread of black pods in cocoa. Indonesia expected coffee output to fall by 30 percent this year as prolonged rains in Sumatra have caused coffee flowers and young cherries to rot, the Indonesia Coffee Exporters Association said. Cocoa production in the world’s third largest producer after Ivory Coast and Ghana, was also expected to fall slightly this year as the wet weather has worsened attack of pests and disease. The dry weather will expand to more areas in June, including Kalimantan, Indonesia’s main source of coal on Borneo island. The main tin-producing BangkaBelitung islands will not have drier weather until July. Rains hit productivity last year at smaller coal miners such as Bayan Resources and reduced 2010 tin output from the world’s top exporter of the metal. The price of silvery, malleable metal — used for soldering electronic goods and packaging — has seen prices soar to a record $32,799 a tonne in mid-February on concern of tight supplies from Indonesia. Tin price has eased to below $30,000 a tonne this week, but has gained 11.5 percent so far this year.

SURABAYA - Pertamina region V has guaranteed fuel oil supply security for provinces serviced by the state oil company as it had sufficient supplies from imports. “Our region will be free from panic buying as we have sufficient supplies for the next 10 days,” said Pertamina Region V assistant manager for external relations Eviyanti Rofraidah said on Tuesday. Pertamina Region V serves the provinces of East Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara. Rofraidah added that it would not mean that after 10 days Pertamina Region V would run out of supplies as more shipments would arrive in East Java on Tuesday afternoon or evening. “There have not been any reports of queues for fuel from those provinces. We guarantee the provision of supplies.” Responding to questions on shortages in several provinces in Sumatra
and Kalimantan, Rofraidah said she believed it had something to do with technical constraints in the field, considering the fact that their supply sources were different from those of Region V. In addition, Pertamina‘s storage capacity in Sumatra and Kalimantan was minimal compared to those in Java as their supply covered only three to four days. Pertamina also was sticking to the government‘s energy distribution policy of prioritizing demand of consumers in areas close to the refineries. “If, for instance, there‘s a shortage in Dumai, priority will be given to supplying consumers in Dumai,” Rofraidah said. Pertamina imports fuel and diesel for East Java from Singapore on the basis of long-term contracts, she said, adding that the region‘s daily demand for premium (basic, leaded gasoline) was 10,000 kiloliters, diesel 5,000 kiloliters and pertamax (unleaded gasoline) 150 kiloliters.
Calonarang: The King, The Witch And The Priest At the beginning of 7th century, a Balinese prince becomes the king of Java, the great Erlangga. His mother, Mahendradatta, was a Javanese princess who ruled Bali with her Balinese husband, Dharmodayana, until the husband, suspecting her of practising evil magic, exiled her to the forest. When Erlangga’s father died, leaving Mahendradatta as a rangda or a widow, she conspired to use her band of pupils trained in the black arts to destroy Erlangga’s kingdom. Her chief grudge against Erlangga because of fancied insults to her beautiful daughter, Ratna Menggali – the noblemen of Daha had refused her in marriage for fear of her mother’s evil reputation. Calonarang (Erlangga’s mother who practising evil magic) went with her pupils to the cemetery and they prayed and danced in honour of Begawati, the deity of black magic, to help them destroy Daha.The goddes appeared and danced with them, granting her permission, warning the witch, however, to preserve the center of the kingdom untouched. The witches danced at the crossroads and soon people fell in great numbers. Discovering the cause of the epidemic, Erlangga ordered his soldiers to go and kill the witch. They stole into her house while she slept and stabbed her in the heart, but Calonarang awoke unhurt and consumed the daring soldiers with her own fire. The witch went once more into the cemetery and danced with her pupils, dug out corpses, cutting them into pieces, eating the members, drinking the blood,
and wearing the entrails as necklaces. Begawati appeared again and joined in the bloody banquet, but warned Calonarang to be careful. The witches danced once more at the crossroads and the dreadful epidemic ravaged the land, the vassals of Erlangga died before they could even bury the corpses they bore to the cemeteries. The desperate king sent for Mpu Bharada, the holy man from Lemah Tulis, the only living being who could vanquish the witch. Mpu Bharada planned his campaign carefully. He sent Bahula, his young assistant, to ask for the witch daughter’s in marriage. Highly flattered, the mother gave her consent and after a happy and passionate honeymoon, Bahula learned from his wife the secret of Calonarang’s power. The possession of a little magic book which he stole and turned over to his master. The holy man copied it and had it returned before the disappearance could be noticed. The book was a manual of righteousness and had to be read backwards. The holy man was then able to restore life to those victims whose bodies had not yet decayed. Armed with the new knowledge, he accused the witch of her crimes, but she challenged him by setting an enormous Banyan tree on fire by a single look of her fiery eyes. Bharada foiled the enraged witch by restoring the tree, and she turned her fire against the holy man. Unmoved, he killed her with one of her own mantras, but she died in her monstrous form and Bharada, to absolve her of her crimes and enable her to atone for them, revived her, gave her human appearance, and then killed her again. Kuta – Tourists are complaining regarding the garbage on Kuta Beach. Some of them are even suffering from skin disease after swimming on the beach. Ari Sutrisno, a tourist from Jakarta, said “there is a lot of garbage and it makes us to take second thought before swimming on the beach. It if touches the skin, it feels a little bit itchy.” There is a lot of garbage in the last few days on Kuta Beach. According to the locals in the area, the garbage is a common phenomenon during the western season. The wind is coming from Asian region and it is harder that the wind coming from Australia. The condition also change the ecological niche so it makes the bacteria increase and the bacteria is the one which responsible on the skin problem of the tourists. The weather is also not quite good
in the last few days and it make the tourists uncomfortable to come to the beach. “It seems that I pick the wrong time to come to Bali. I will return when the weather is better,” Sutrisno said again. In order to determine the condition of the water on Kuta Beach, Badung Marine and Fishery Department had taken samples of the water to be analyzed. Based on the result, the acidity of the water is increasing.

Fewer Cruise Ships Headed to Indonesia Denpasar - The number of cruise ship visits to Indonesia in 2011 is put at only 31, a decline from the numbers projected last year due to the cancellation of planned ship visits to Bali and Komodo. Based on the data from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism said 127,774 tourist on 206 different ships visited Indonesia on total of 206 separate calls. By contrast, in 2011 only 31 ships are scheduled to call on Indonesia with expected passenger loads of 105,926 making 161 calls.
Sapta Nirwandar, the Director General of Marketing for the Ministry explained the decline, saying, “it’s due to cancellations from ships coming to Bali and Komodo, mostly because of the ports are not ready.” Culture and Tourism officials are optimistic, however, that the numbers of actual calls may increase as the year progresses. Most cruise ships calling on Indonesia fall within the medium class with capacities for between 500600 passengers carrying senior citizens who spend as much as US$50-US$100 on each port call.

More Singaporean tourists visiting Bali Antara
DENPASAR - Some 16,969 Singaporean tourists visiting the resort island in January 2011 or 121.4 percent increase over the same period last year, according to a Bali statistics official. “The significant increase due to various factors including the image of Bali as secure place for vacation, the many unique attractions and the relative short flight time between Singapore and Bali,” said Gede Suarsa, head of Bali province Statistics Office, here, on Tuesday. As many as 5,871 tourists from Singapore visited Bali in January 2010 with total visits in the whole 2010 were 97,402 tourists. The 2010 figure was also a sharp increase from 55,992 visitors in 2009. Singapore was at the eight position
as source of visitors to Bali in the top ten countries after Australia, China, Japan, Russia, South Korea, Malaysia and Taiwan, Suarsa said. Despite the noticeable rise in the Singaporean arrivals, Suarsa added, but the total figure of tourists from the country was still relative small, just 3.3 percent from the total cumulative international incoming visit. In January 2011 Bali has registered the total incoming figure of 209,093 visitors, a 16.6 percent increase over the same period of last year 179,273 tourists.The total international arrival
figure to Bali in 2011 was 2.54 million visitors, a 8.01 percent increase compared to the 2010 total of 2.38 million visitors.Out of the top ten, Taiwan and Japan saw a decline in their citizens‘ visit to Bali, respectively 7.4 percent and 13.26 percent last year. There are fish, crab, shrimp and snails. Balinese people may call the latter as ungun or river snail. This snail has two forms, namely ordinary snail and half snail. The half snail shapes like carapace of turtle. Its flesh is open and has a piece of thin bone. When boiled, its flesh will easily get released from its carapace, while the ordinary one should be taken out by pin, needle and so on. When their delicacy is combined with sabrang or Balinese cherry potato, they will have typical flavor. Its shape is much smaller than common potato and its leaf resembles to that of broadleaf thyme (jinten). Apart from combined with river snail or chicken, this cherry potato is also good if cooked as single vegetable. It is usually sold at traditional market or village stalls. Ingredients: 2 handful river snail, 250gram sabrang or cherry potato (peeled) and 800ml water for gravy. Ground spices: 6 cloves shallot, 3 cloves garlic, 2 small chilies, 1 candlenut, 2 tbsp grated coconut (ground with other spices), 1 slice turmeric, 1 slice aromatic ginger and 1 slice galangal Others: 1 pc salam leaf, 1 tbsp palm oil and ½ tsp salt. Method: · Cleanse thoroughly the river snail and cherry potato and drain. · Pre-heat the palm oil on the frying pan. Stir-fry the ground spices until smelling fragrant. Add some water and wait until boiling. · Put the cherry potato and river snail together into the pan. BUSINESS World Bank unit takes stake in Philippine bank Agence France-Presse
MANILA – The World Bank’s investment arm International Finance Corp. is to take a minority stake in Philippine lender Rizal Commercial Banking Corp., the listed bank has said. Rizal told the Philippine Stock Exchange in a disclosure it had secured central bank approval to sell 73.4 million shares to IFC. Though the terms of the deal were undisclosed, the share block would account for just over seven percent of Rizal’s outstanding shares and would be worth 2.02 billion pesos ($46.57
million) based on its closing price on Tuesday. Rizal is capitalised at 25 billion pesos.The IFC office in Manila told AFP its spokeswoman was unavailable for comment. “Through its SME (Small-and Medium-Enterprise) Banking Initiative, IFC is also forging strategic partnerships with local banks to allow small and medium enterprises greater access to credit,” its website said. IFC also has a stake of just under one percent in Banco de Oro, one of the Philippines’ largest banks.

TOKYO – Japan’s core privatesector machinery orders, a a top indicator of corporate capital spending, rose 4.2 percent in January from the month before, data showed on Wednesday, strengthening recovery hopes. The data marked the second consecutive monthly growth and beat market expectations of 3.1 percent rise in a survey by the Nikkei business daily. The positive core data, which exclude volatile demand from power companies and for ships, followed a 1.7 percent rise in December and was the biggest increase since August, the Cabinet Office said. “Machinery orders are on the recovery trend, but weakness is seen in the non-manufacturing sector,” it said.
The January figures were the latest indication that the Japanese economy is recovering after a contraction in October-December, when gross domestic product shrank 1.1 percent at an annual rate. Recent data have prompted both the government and the Bank of Japan to upgrade their forecasts for the economy, creating expectations for a positive GDP figure for the first quarter of the year. Japan’s industrial output rose in January for the third straight month, as the pace of export growth quickens. Norio Miyagawa, senior economist at Mizuho Research and Consulting, told Dow Jones Newswires: “Today’s report, along with other recent indicators, suggest business spending should continue increasing moderately in the JanuaryMarch quarter, though it’s still too early to say if it will accelerate.

NEW YORK – Oil prices slipped on Tuesday, with Brent falling nearly 2 percent, after Kuwait’s oil minister said OPEC was considering a production boost as war-torn Libya’s output remained disrupted and the region’s unrest fueled concerns about more supplies being cut off. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries has left official policy steady for more than two years, but analysts have said output has been informally rising. Saudi Arabia has offered to help make up for Libya’s shut output, estimated at about 1 million barrels per day of its normal 1.6 million bpd. Brent crude for April delivery fell $1.98 to settle at $113.06 a barrel, having fallen as low as $112.13. U.S. crude futures for April delivery fell 42 cents to settle at $105.02 a barrel, above an early $103.33 low. “The market is now waiting for the next piece of news to unfold,” said Harry Tchilinguirian, head of commodity markets strategy at BNP Paribas. “A turn for the worse for the market would be oil infrastructure being hit as a result of the fighting. The demise of the current regime or a more forceful statement from OPEC followed by an increase in production would be significant too.” Brent’s premium to the U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude ended post-settlement trading down $1.79 at $7.96 a barrel, down from a record of more

Cathay Pacific to buy 27 new Airbus, Boeing planes Agence France-Presse
HONG KONG – Cathay Pacific has said that it will buy 27 planes from Airbus and Boeing in a deal worth as much as $6.55 billion, as the carrier reported a record profit for 2010. The Hong Kong airline said it had struck a deal with European aircraft maker Airbus for 15 A330-300s and a separate agreement with US-based Boeing for 10 777-300ERs. The purchase also included two more Airbus A350-900s, Cathay said, adding that all the models would be delivered before the end of 2015. The total list price for the new planes was HK$51 billion ($6.55 billion) although they would “be acquired at a considerable discount, as is the usual practice in such transactions,” Cathay said. Cathay also said it booked a net profit of HK$14.05 billion in 2010, nearly triple the 2009 result of $4.69 billion.

“Black Death” a treat for medieval history buffs Reuters
LOS ANGELES – You can’t quarrel with that title, “Black Death.” The film is black all right, pitch black, and death is everywhere. The story is set in 1348, after all, when the plague began to sweep through Europe, decimating its populace by as much as half and spreading panic to every corner. Yet what a strange land for a horror filmmaker to pitch camp in since he has little to add when horror is a fact of everyday life. Sure enough, Christopher Smith (“Creep,” “Severance”) plays with the notion of necromancers and demons lurking within the pestilence, but winds up retreating into a kind of historical morality tale told with documentary flourishes and a grim attraction to violence and cruelty. All of which leaves “Black Death” without a reliable audience. Horror film buffs like to giggle as much as scream but there’re no giggles here. To its credit, the film doesn’t indulge in visual-effects devilry as a very similar plague film, “Season of the Witch,” did just two months ago. So it’s up to medieval history buffs to fill the theaters when it opens on Friday. Lots of luck. The coincidence of storylines between “Season of the Witch” and “Black Death” is rather striking and in every instance Black Death is the superior film. In both films, the church, seeing its grip on the popu-
lation severely loosened by this inexplicable plague, sends Christian knights into a remote region to determine if witches, demons or nonbelievers are the source of this frightening scourge. In “Witch,” church elders are portrayed as cartoon villains, capable of just about any evil in the name of a vengeful God, but the elders do get the bit about devils right — kick-ass demons are out there bent on destroying humankind. In “Black Death,” Smith and screenwriter Dario Poloni take aim at real horror — painful infections and pitiless death that spread hysterical panic, which causes an already arrogant church to search for scapegoats as all semblance of civil and religious authority crumbles. The focus here is on two “men of God” — a knight, Ulric (Sean Bean), who truly believes his sword can slay with impunity in the name of the Father, and a naive monk, Osmund (Eddie Redmayne), whose outlook is more equivocal since he has already fallen for a woman and so realizes that things are never quite black or white. The monk is to lead the knight and his motley crew of killers and mercenaries (which is all they really are) into an isolated marshland where, rumors insist, a community has mysteriously resisted the plague. This can only mean witchcraft and devil-worship. The intent of these soldiers is painfully clear from the mobile torture machine they lug along with them.

LOS ANGELES – Lindsay Lohan spent roughly 25 minutes wearing a necklace inside a jewelry store that accused her of theft, surveillance video broadcast Tuesday shows. “Entertainment Tonight” aired several snippets of footage shot by four cameras inside Kamofie & Co., a Venice jewelry store near Lohan’s home. The footage shows the actress trying on three necklaces before putting on the one reported stolen roughly 20 minutes after entering the store. The surveillance video is part of evidence prosecutors plan to use against Lohan, who has pleaded not guilty to felony grand theft. She is scheduled to return to court on Thursday to tell a judge whether she intends to take a plea deal that in-
cludes guaranteed jail time. She could also opt to fight the case, which would then proceed to a preliminary hearing that could end with Lohan being ordered to stand trial and being sent back to jail. The actress was on probation for a 2007 drunken driving case when police began investigating her for the necklace theft, and a judge has said he thinks she has violated her probation. Video footage aired Tuesday shows Lohan, 24, chatting with a clerk while trying on several necklaces, all but one of which she quickly removed, according to the
show. She placed one of her own necklaces over the store’s necklace and continued to browse in the store, the video shows. In a post titled “Breaking News,” the London-born multiple Grammy award winner said he wanted to explain his reasons “for calling it a day” in response to articles claiming he was quitting the music business. “Many of the articles printed over the last few months have ended up painting a picture of me that is more than a little distorted,” Collins, 60, explained in the message posted Monday. He said he is stopping music so he can be a full time father to his two young sons “on a daily basis” — not because of bad reviews, bad press or because he doesn’t “feel loved.”
Speculation about a possible last act for Collins was sparked by an interview in April’s issue of FHM magazine in which the former Genesis drummer and frontman said “it feels like a good time to stop for awhile.” Contradictory articles soon followed, some focusing on health problems, detailed in the FHM article as a reason behind a possible retirement or break from music. An article in the Daily Mail said a Texas clairvoyant had lead Collins to believe he is the reincarnation of an Alamo survivor. Scientists dig for Ice Age fossils in Los Angeles Associated Press Writer
LOS ANGELES – With a dental pick in hand, Karin Rice delicately scraped off a clump of asphalt from a pelvic bone belonging to a horse that roamed Los Angeles tens of thousands of years ago. Like many unsuspecting creatures of the last Ice Age, the horse probably stopped to take a sip of spring water only to be ensnared — and later preserved — in a pool of sticky asphalt that seeped from underground crude oil deposits. “You’re opening up this ancient world and getting to look back in time,” Rice said during a recent dig at the La Brea Tar Pits in the heart of Los Angeles. For the past three years, scientists have been sifting through a significant trove of bones and a nearly intact mammoth skeleton discovered in 2006 during the construction of an underground garage next to the tar pits. It’s been slow going. To make room for the parking structure, researchers at the George C. Page
Museum built wooden crates to house the cache and trucked them to the tar pits complex where excavators use power and hand tools to break up the soil. Careful to avoid the mistakes of early diggers who only prized large mammals bones and little else, a small army of museum employees and volunteers painstakingly chisels away seven days a week, recovering not only animal bones, but also saving the dirt for later inspection for microfossils.
So far, scientists have unearthed five of the 23 boxed deposits, removing some 16,000 fossil bones. Among the finds: partial skulls and lower jaws of half a dozen saber-toothed kittens, several ribs and skull of a camel, and assorted remains of a giant jaguar, ground sloth and baby mammoths. While visitors are wowed by the larger fossils, scientists are equally interested in finding bits of plants, insects, rodents and microscopic organisms that can reveal a great deal about the past environment, said Page Museum chief curator John Harris. “We’re still trying to piece everything together,” he said. Harris estimated it will take five years to sort through the crates. The museum has placed a priority on getting the above-ground excavation done, so it temporarily halted work on Pit 91 where scientists have been pulling out bones since 1969.

Whale Shark Feeding Frenzies Mystify, Enlighten Scientists IF this year is like the last few, one of the most mysterious creatures in the world will soon descend upon the waters off of the Yucatan Peninsula. The blue, plankton-rich waters will become an all-you-can-eat haven for hundreds of giant whale sharks, an annual event known as “afuera.” As writer Jim Tharpe wrote Monday in the Washington Post, the sharks feed on plankton at the ocean surface in a “swirling mass.” Nowhere else do whale sharks gather in such numbers in full view of human eyes – and researchers are using the opportunity to learn more about these elusive giants. “Amazingly, the largest fish in the world, which is the whale shark, is one of the least known,” Rafael de la Parra, a biologist and coordinator for Mexico’s whale shark conservation Domino Project, told LiveScience. The sharks live their lives largely out of the sight. Little is known about where they go and what they do when they aren’t in shallow-water feeding groups like the ones in Mexican waters. Satellite tags, which beam back information about animals’ where-
abouts, have given some hints, said Robert Hueter, the director of the shark research center at the Mote Marine Laboratory in Florida. Hueter, de la Parra and their colleagues have tracked 42 whale sharks from the Yucatan area with satellite tags since 2003. They’ve found that the animals swim massive distances. One female turned up in the Southern Hemisphere halfway between Brazil and Africa. She’d traveled a minimum of 4,500 miles (7,242 kilometers) in 150 days, not including vertical distance diving or any curves on her route. “We’re working on the hypothesis that they are going down there to give birth to their pups, at least that’s one place that they’re going,” Hueter told LiveScience. The theory is consistent with observations of small whale sharks in the area, he said, but so far the team hasn’t seen another female take the same journey. The whale sharks also take deep dives. The deepest observed dive, Hueter said, was 6,325 feet (1,928 meters) below the ocean surface – more than a mile and a quarter. The sharks make these dives in a long, slow glide, Hueter said, leading researchers to speculate that it’s a way for the animals to cover long distances without expending much energy.

Real Madrid ‘keen to sell Kaka’ Agence France Presse
MADRID – Real Madrid hopes to offload its injury-plagued Brazilian star Kaka in the summer close season, although he still has four years left on his contract, a Spanish sports daily said Wednesday. The 28-year-old midfielder, signed from AC Milan in 2009 for 65 million euros, underwent surgery on his left knee on August 5 and only returned to training in December. The Spanish club then announced on Tuesday that he would be sidelined for another two weeks after he injured his same knee again. “Real Madrid will try to sell Kaka in June,” the Madridbased sports newspaper AS said in a front-page story. “His poor showing in these two seasons determined the change in policy on the Brazilian. He was out for 85 days last season. “The problem is that he still has four years left on his (sixyear) contract at nine million euros net per season,” or 15 million with taxes, said AS, which did not quote any sources for the report. “That is a total of 60 million euros, and the big question is which club would take on that salary. Not to mention that he would not go free and there would be a market price on his transfer.” Coach Jose Mourinho “is also tired of and disappointed with the player. The coach does not understand that a star player is not involved in the group.” Earlier this month Mourinho had said he was putting no pressure on Kaka to return to form after his knee surgery in August. “He is going through a natural process and we must continue to support him. He is a fantastic guy and a great player. We must be patient and allow him to work with no pressure. I don’t put any pressure on him,” Mourinho said. The latest injury means Kaka will miss Real’s next league match at home against Hercules as well as next week’s Champions League last-16 second leg against Lyon.
Barcelona dominated Arsenal to win 3-1 on the night - 4-3 on aggregate - though the losers were left seething at the second-half dismissal of Dutch star Robin van Persie for a second bookable offence when he shot at goal after the referee had already blown his whistle. Shakhtar eased through 3-0 at home to Roma for a 6-2 aggregate victory the Italians played for 50 minutes with 10 players after French central defender Philippe Mexes was also dismissed for a second bookable offence. Roma were fortunate not to also see Daniele De Rossi get a straight red card for a vicious elbow on Shakhtar captain Dario Srna on the stroke of half-time - England’s World Cup final referee Howard Webb ended up booking a bemused Srna instead. Not only did former Gunners striker Eduardo get among the goals for the Ukrainian side in Tuesday’s win but Arsenal demolished them 5-1 in the group stage at the Emirates only to end up second to the 2009 UEFA Cup winners in the final standings. Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola admitted it had been a tough decision by Swiss referee Massimo Busacca to book Van Persie for the second offence but he had no truc with Arsenal’s unlucky losers claim. “We didn’t allow them to make three or four successive passes this evening,” he said. “We played a perfect game. I am so happy, indeed we all are at our performance. Over the two legs we were better than them.” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger - whose side’s hopes of ending their title drought dating back to 2005 are in danger of ending in disappointment again - could not accept that the better side had won. “We lost against a good team but if it had stayed at 11 players apiece then I could accept losing,” said the Frenchman, who has seen his side lose in the League Cup final and exit here in the past 10 days leaving the Premier League title and FA Cup still alive as trophy hopes. Diarra keen on Napoli move - agent Monaco midfielder Mahamadou Diarra could be heading to Serie A next season, after his agent confirmed that he would be keen to move to Napoli. Diarra joined French Ligue 1 outfit Monaco from Real Madrid on loan in January but, with his contract finishing at the end of the season, is a free-agent in the summer. The Mali international has been linked with Manchester United and Liverpool, but would apparently prefer to move to Italy. “Diarra would be very interested in playing for Napoli, because he knows it is an important arena in Italian football,” Frederic Guerra told Radio CRC. ‘’I have not spoken to Napoli about signing the player, but Diarra [will be] a free agent. Real Madrid paid €6 million for him five years ago. “Diarra would very much like to play for Napoli, as he considers them an important club with ample room for growth.” Meanwhile, Marek Hamsik’s agent has said that his client is ‘totally focused’ on the club and is not thinking about a move away, despite being linked with some of Europe’s elite. Also speaking to Radio CRC, Juri Venglos stressed: “All the market voices are just speculation. Hamsik is not listening to all the market voices as he is totally focused on the end of the season.” “He wants to build his future with Napoli and he is tied to the club. He wants to stay regardless of whether Napoli play Champions League or Europa League football.”

MIAMI – Erik Spoelstra vowed to keep the Miami Heat fighting. Chris Bosh acknowledged he needs to do more and lobbied to get more opportunities. LeBron James and Dwyane Wade insisted their confidence remains high. The Heat script hasn’t changed much lately. Nor have the results, as Miami’s freefall continues. LaMarcus Aldridge scored 26 points, Gerald Wallace scored 22 — easily his best game since joining Portland last month — and the Trail Blazers survived a 38-point effort by Wade in beating the Heat 105-96 on Tuesday night, sending Miami to its fifth straight loss overall and sixth in eight games since the All-Star break. “We needed that win,” Blazers guard Andre Miller said. “I tried to bring some energy down the stretch. It could have easily went the other way. It was back and forth a little bit, but we were able to make some big plays.” Wade didn’t have the only big night for Miami. James finished with 31 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists for the Heat, who are the 12th team in NBA history to have a 12-game winning streak and
five-game losing streak in the same season. “How do we explain it? We can’t,” James said. “This isn’t rock bottom for us. Crazy thing is, we could lose every game and still make the playoffs in the Eastern Conference.” After Wade and James, help was fleeting. Instant replay will be available for the first time on all eight competition courts at the desert resort oasis, where Croatia’s Ivan Ljubicic and Serbian Jelena Jankovic will defend their crowns. UCI wins landmark anti-doping verdicts Associated Press Writer
GENEVA – Italian rider Franco Pellizotti was found guilty of doping and banned for two years Tuesday in a landmark victory for cycling’s blood profiling program. The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that evidence of blood doping was confirmed in Pellizotti’s biological passport profile. He was stripped of all his race results since May 2009. Pellizotti, whose ban runs through May 2, 2012, loses his third-place finish at the 2009 Giro d’Italia and his King of the Mountains title at the 2009 Tour de France. He also must pay the International Cycling Union a fine of $160,000, CAS said. Cycling’s governing body welcomed the court’s endorsement of its flagship project to catch drug cheats. “We always were convinced of the quality of our antidoping program and the work of our scientific people,” UCI spokesman Enrico Carpani said in a telephone interview. Cycling’s governing body appealed to CAS after he was cleared by an Italian anti-doping court last October. The UCI said CAS also rejected Pietro Caucchioli’s appeal against his two-year suspension imposed by the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) on the basis of biological passport results. Pellizotti and Caucchioli never tested positive for banned drugs but showed irregular results in blood samples taken for their biological passport. The verdicts are the first issued by CAS appeal panels that have examined the scientific and legal validity of the biological passport. The program was designed so that scientists can prove evidence of the effects of doping rather than trace and test for banned substances. The CAS panel “reviewed in detail the biological passport program applied by the UCI and has found that the strict application of such program could be considered as a reliable means of detecting indirect doping methods,” it said in a statement. The project was launched by the UCI and the World Anti-Doping Agency in 2008.

Rossi changing riding style for Ducati Valentino Rossi has admitted that he is having to change his riding style to suit the Ducati as there will not be time to adapt the bike to his liking. The seven-time MotoGP champion has not yet been on the pace in testing since moving from Yamaha to Ducati at the end of last year. Although his form has also been hampered by a shoulder injury and resultant surgery, Rossi conceded that the Ducati was taking time to master. “This bike must be ridden mostly through oversteer, in the sense that, in order to make it turn, you need to get the rear to slide a lot,” he told Motosprint. “In this respect the Ducati is very different from the Yamaha. But this is a manoeuvre I do to try to solve the problems we have now: in my opinion, with time, we’ll be able to improve the situation a lot. “[Turning is] the thing we lack the most. But at the moment the only way to handle this bike is to adapt to that way of riding, it’s the bike’s DNA.” The Italian believes some progress can be made with set-up changes. “There are some areas where we have pinpointed the problems, so we can solve them quickly,” said Rossi. “I’m talking about the bike’s behaviour when accelerating, the engine’s power curve, traction control, and all the electronic controls. “I’m confident we’ll soon see improvements on these issues because the Ducati technicians are very good and I think I’ve given them precise indications. “As for the rest, the problem is that we lack handling. We need to try to make this bike turn better: at the moment the Desmosedici has a lot of understeer.” But he admitted that for now he would just have to change his style. “It’s up to me to adapt to the bike - also because we have little time at our disposal to do major changes,” he said. But while I adapt, we’ll carry on working to improve the bike.” Rossi remains confident that he can get up to speed with Ducati given time, despite being unhappy at the end of the last test at Sepang. “That doesn’t mean that I don’t think we can make it,” he said. “I won’t ever give up, and neither will my team and certainly neither will Ducati. “We have many ideas, we just need time to work. I’m curious to see what this bike feels like on other tracks, starting from Qatar, and with other temperatures.” Rossi acknowledged that there would be some, particularly in Italy, who would be pleased to see him struggle on the Ducati. “I’d split this group in two factions: one part is made of those who have always been against me, people who don’t like me, people who supported [Max] Biaggi first, then [Sete] Gibernau, and then [Casey] Stoner,” said Rossi. “The excuse was that Casey rode for Ducati, but the truth is these people don’t like me. There’s not much I can do about it, I must accept this situation. “As for the other part, it’s a group of Ducati fans who have always seen me as a rival, so they now struggle to accept me atop a Ducati. Overall, it’s people who haven’t looked at this union with favour. These are fans I would like to convince and win over with results and with the races.”
Webber: RBR ready for season to start MARK Webber says Red Bull Racing is ‘ready’ to take its new car into battle for the first race of the season, after another encouraging day of testing at Barcelona on Tuesday. With the new RB7 widely tipped as one of the favourites for victory when the campaign finally gets underway in Australia, Webber is equally confident about the progress the outfit has made over the winter. And he admits that he is keen to now get on with the racing, so the reigning world champion team can finally get some answers about where it stands compared to its main opposition. “You can always do with more time - but I feel we are ready to go now and get into it,” Webber said when asked by AUTOSPORT about his feelings on Red Bull Racing’s pre-season preparations. “We will see where we are. “You always learn more when you go racing about your strengths and weaknesses as a team. That comes from pace, reliability, pitstops, organisation, Saturdays/ Sundays, the whole thing. So the
whole weekend needs to be tested shortly and we will go from there. We are only a few days away from that.” Although Webber is not surprised that rival teams believe Red Bull Racing is out in front, he is still cautious about making any bold predictions before competitive action starts. “We are not going to sit here and say we are going to destroy the first race and kill everyone, because that would be naive,” he said. “There are a lot of people with similar pace – don’t worry about that.” He added: “It is pretty obvious that the team is incredibly motivated, and organisation-wise we are in great shape - so we are building on what we did last year. “But I don’t think there is a huge amount of evidence to go on from the previous eight weeks to be honest, because today we see everyone with similar pace. Ferrari isn’t here, and McLaren is not hanging around either. “We need to go racing. Unfortunately I will be able to tell you guys a lot more come Sunday I believe, even Saturday night in Melbourne. We will have an idea of 60 per cent
of it, but 40 per cent will still be confirmed after the race to be honest. “So it is quite frustrating that I cannot give you guys more on what is happening. There is such a big variation in tyre age and fuel loads, that there is no one in the pitlane who knows where they are.” Webber also laughed off suggestions that Red Bull Racing had not yet shown its true pace in testing so far. “Certainly not,” he said. “I would love to be able to say that. There is not enough time to play games with yourself, let alone other people.”
