President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who has been criticised for failing to stem the violence, ordered the police and military to go “all-out” against extremists behind the unrest. “Every person should be guaranteed protection and safety, whatever his faith, ethnicity, race, political affiliation or profession,” the
soft spoken ex-general said in a speech to provincial governors. “The string of violence must be stopped. I have instructed all regional heads, police and military regional commands to launch allout actions... to prevent these violent actions from happening.” Indonesia’s image as a bastion of inter-faith harmony has been
battered in recent months by violent Islamic extremism and marauding vigilante groups. The wave of hate crimes targeting Christians and other minorities climaxed on Sunday when hundreds of enraged Muslims brutally murdered three followers of a heterodox Islamic sect in front of police, who did little to intervene. The country was still in shock after a disturbing video of that lynch mob attack emerged when another crowd of Muslim hardliners rampaged through the streets of Temanggung, Central Java, on Tuesday. This time police responded with
tear gas but again failed to stop the mob, which set fire to two churches and vandalised a Catholic school as they called for the death of a Christian man who had been sentenced to jail for blaspheming Islam. Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini described the incident as a “very serious demonstration of anti-Christian fanaticism”. US Ambassador Scot Marciel said the United States “joins the vast majority of Indonesians in deploring the violence” against the Ahmadiyah sect, and noted “with concern” the church burnings in Central Java. Bali News Plant disease runs riot in Buleleng Singaraja (Bali Post)—
At least 87 hectares of rice crops in Kubutambahan subdistrict decayed and virtually could be ascertained to face crop failures. It occurred after the rice crops had been attacked by rice white stem borer (Scirpophaga innotata) since a few days ago. Chief of Subak (Balinese irrigation cooperative) Uma Desa, Made Darmadia, said the stem borer attack took place in four subaks of Kubutambahan Village. They were the subak of Uma Desa, Tambahan, Babakan and Tukad Dalem. On average, the damaged rice plants due to stem borer in the three subaks were approximately 15 hectares. So, the total damaged rice crops and in danger of crop failure in Kubutambahan reached about 85 hectares. Especially in the subak of Uma Desa, the total fields whose rice crop was damaged reached 35 hectares. If calculated, the farmer suffered a loss of averagely IDR 2.5 million per hectare. This cost included the charges of hand tractor, purchase of seed, planting costs, and fertilizer purchase. Therefore, the losses suffered by farmers in the subak of Uma Desa reached IDR 87 million more. Meanwhile, Kadek Saniasa, a farmer of Subak Uma Desa, said that a few days after the rice was planted in January, the growth of his rice crop seemed normal. However, a few weeks later their leaves suddenly started to turn yellow. Having been observed, stems of the plant already rotted as eaten by stem borer caterpillar. Saniasa admitted that he had made preventive efforts by spraying toxic insecticides. In addition, he also did fertilizing to help the growth of plants. Yet, the result was not optimal. Stem borers still continued to attack and the transmission was getting more rampant. “I do not really know how to cope with the matter. I once sprayed it by poison and fertilizer was added, in reality the efforts did not work. Up to these days, the plant disease remains to attack,” he said. According to Saniasa, he did not know what to do anymore to resolve the attack of plant disease. His party had reported the matter to the field extension officer (PPL), but his report was not responded yet. Meanwhile, the disease was getting more violent and farmers really expected the help to overcome the problem. Even, he also hoped if government could lend a hand to alleviate the burden of losses incurred. Moreover, most farmers of Kubutambahan were sharecroppers cultivating the land of others. As consequence, if the crop failed, they would automatically lose their income. “Now, we are getting confused. We much appreciate if the field extension officers could give us explanation about the plant disease and how to cope with it,” he said.
Fall and rise of traditional harbor porters Soaking wet, only earn IDR 3,000 a day Aside from the Nusa Penida Pier, a number of traditional ports stay active in providing the crossing services to and from Nusa Penida. Traditional port remains to become a traditional mode of transport for the island residents. In addition to conferring a livelihood opportunity to the owners of traditional boats, the existence of traditional ports also support the economy of tens of porters. Though their income falls and rises and even only reaches IDR 3,000 a day, those porters live their profession faithfully. In Nusa Penida, there are four traditional ports. Except for Buyuk Port, the traditional ports have become the option of traders because they are more secure and comfortable. It does not matter if the capacity of the traditional crossing is fewer than the more modern Roro ship. Similarly, the travel time is also longer. “I do not know why, but I feel more comfortable to cross my merchandise by traditional boat,” confessed Ayu, a service user of traditional boat who is also a trader in Mentigi Market. Every port has a dozen to tens of porters as well as peddlers of transportation service. They do not only carry goods, but also carry passengers who do not want their clothes soaked, moreover, when it tides up. “My earning is uncertain, depending on the number of passengers,” said one of the porters at Mentigi
Harbor, Made Sueca. Admittedly, working as a porter and peddler of transportation services was not a promising job. Its earning fluctuated depending on the number of passengers. When crowded, he said, such as on public holiday or feast days, the highest earning could reach IDR 50 thousand per day. However, during low season he only earned IDR 3,000 a day. In reality, he should be soaking to commit the work. Indeed, the distance was not far away, only about 4 meters from the beachside to the end of the boat. “The number of public holidays and feast days is less than normal days. On that account, as a porter, we frequently earned less than more,” he said. He exemplified on Tuesday (Feb 2), the passenger was quiet and the crossing was only once. As a result, Sueca only obtained IDR 2,000 because he only carried one passenger. “Indeed, the number of passengers and goods transported are a lot. But, we are working as a porter with many friends. Here (at Mentigi Harbor—Ed), there are 30 porters,” he said. However, Sueca confessed he would never leave the profession. Aside from congregating with the
fellow porters, he also could help the passengers and it was close to his home. Similar condition was confessed by number of porters and peddlers of transportation services at Sampalan and Toya Pakeh Port. Though their income was uncertain, they claimed that they could support their family by the current job. When passengers were quiet, the porters could do any other job at their surrounding, like cleaning up the boats and others. A counter officer at the Sampalan Port, Dewa Made Wiyasa, justified that the current number of passengers through traditional port declined. Only merchants and a number of other public passengers could hold out and feel comfortable to cross by traditional boat. Meanwhile, the other passengers preferred to take Roro ship. “Formerly, the crossing could go back and forth for several times. Today, it is only one time, except on holidays reaching many times,” said Dewa Wiyasa. The number of passengers for once departure tended to decrease. By and large, it was between 60 to 80 passengers and even more. He added the current passengers were maximally 40. (bal)

Narcotic Distributor Captured 215 Ecstasies and 7,03 Grams Methamphetamine Confiscated Denpasar (Bali Post) –
With the never ending narcotic cases in Bali, finally the Bali Police Narcotics Directorate have successfully captured a man from Sumbawa initialed TH (26) on early morning Monday (7/2) at a food kiosk across Indomaret mini market located at Kebo Iwa Street, Denpasar. The accused was suspected to be a distributor and courier of the narcotics. From the hands of accused, police confiscated evidences of 215 ecstasies, 35 methamphetamine packets all up to 7,03 grams. Besides those, police also confiscated a digital weighing device, three clipped plastic bags, three straws and five candles. “All the evidences are now safe with the police,” Head of Bali Police Community Information Sub Directorate, AKBP Sri Harmiti, stated accompanied by Head of Idik II/Psychotropic, AKBP Shobirin, last Tuesday (8/2).The report started from public complains stating accused have kept and distributed the illegal items. Since then, police searched accused and targeted to be captured quickly as accused owns a lot of it, “And so officers managed to capture accused.” Accused was captured with no objection and a packet of methamphetamine was found on his
pants pocket weighing 2,30 grams. The investigation was then taken further by raiding accused flat at Kebo Iwa Street, Gang 131, Padang Sambian, Denpasar, “In this place, more evidences were found. It also shocked officers.” Specifically, a methamphetamine packet weighing 0,15 grams and three ecstasies was found on a sock. Then in a small bag there were 31 packets of crystals weighing 5,85 grams also 212 Ineks wrapped in tissue. So in total will be 7,03 grams of methamphetamine and 215 pieces of ecstasy. Accused and evidences were then brought to Bali Police Headquarter to be investigated even further. From the investigation, it is revealed accused were forced to run this illegal business to fulfill his family needs. All this time he has been applying for jobs but none contacted back. One day he met a person initialed M and offered him to sell the items. “M told me to do it and M was a supplier. M gave me IDR 500 thousand to pay for my flat rent,” TH admitted. As how do they work, M will place the item in some place then TH will be asked to get it. They communicate through short message service (sms), “There were none sold yet. Padangbai Harbor Administration (Adpel) workers and Lembar-Padangbai River, Lake and Crossing Transportation (ASDP) since Monday (7/2) applied a policy to open and close LembarPadangbai crossing as high wave 3,5 meters is occurring at Lombok Strait. The Operational Manager of Lembar-Padangbai ASDP, Eko Yulianto, last Tuesday (8/2) at Padangbai stated that the crossing was closed on Monday (7/2) at 11 pm while in Lembar since 7 pm of the same day with the last ship crossing from Lembar towards Padangbai Darma Kosala. After goods were taken down in Padangbai at 11 pm, the ship stayed in Padangbai. The wave’s height were from 0,75 meter up to 3,5 meter with wind 45 km per hour based on the data and coordination with Meteorology and Geophysics Board (BMG) at Ngurah Rai, Tuban. Meanwhile, Supervisor I of Padangbai, Wayan Rosta, stated that on Tuesday (8/2) early morning at 3 am, crossing has been opened again as the waves seemed calmed down.

“Bhisma Dewa Bharata” Perform for 33rd Bali Arts Festival The opening act for Bali Arts Festival (BAF) has been identified by its colossal mime drama dance (sendratari) of Ramayana or Mahabrata stories. Egyptians stage massive anti-Mubarak protest Reuters
CAIRO – Egyptians have staged one of their biggest protests yet insisting President Hosni Mubarak step down immediately and ignoring a government plan to transfer power. For many protesters it was the first time they had joined the daily demonstrations in Cairo’s Tahrir Square showing the movement, now in its third week, still has momentum. Many said they were inspired by a Google executive’s tearful televised account of his detention by security forces. Mubarak has refused to step down, but said neither he nor his son will stand for president in polls due in September. Vice President Omar Suleiman, who has been holding talks with opposition groups, said there was now a road map to hand over power, but protesters were unmoved by the plan. “The people want the regime to fall,” the crowds chanted. Meanwhile, Suleiman blamed the protests for paralyzing the Egyptian economy. “The big presence in Tahrir Square and some of the satellite stations which insult Egypt ... make citizens hesitant to go to work,” he said. Suleiman said: “We cannot bear this situation for a long time and we must end this crisis as soon as possible.” Credit Agricole analysts estimate the crisis is costing Egypt $310 million a day.

TOKYO – Officials say Japan’s emperor will undergo medical tests following the discovery of a heart problem. The Imperial Household Agency says Emperor Akihito, 77, will have thorough tests Friday at a Tokyo hospital after the problem was detected in checkups last month. The agency says Akihito will continue his duties Wednesday and Thursday. The emperor underwent an operation for prostate cancer in 2003 and has been undergoing hormonal therapy to prevent its recurrence. He has cut back on official duties because of health reasons. He did not make any foreign trips last year.
SYDNEY – Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard Wednesday urged Aboriginals to take more responsibility for improving their notoriously poor living standards, warning government progress had been slow. Gillard, presenting an annual report on Australia’s indigenous people, said it would be “extremely challenging” to meet the core target of markedly improving their life expectancy within a generation. She stressed that deep cultural changes were needed “to break the cycle of blame between Australian governments and indigenous Australia”, adding that lives would only improve through greater “personal responsibility”. Gillard unveiled the report three years after her predecessor, Kevin Rudd, made a historic apology to Aborigines for abuses suffered under successive governments since white settlement began in 1788. “Indigenous people know that when the child starts attending school, when the drinker stops abusing alcohol, when the adult takes the job that is there, then change begins,” she told parliament. “And indigenous people know these decisions are not made by governments. They are made by people.” Gillard said Canberra was on track to meet two of six “ambitious” goals set in the 2008 apology to indigenous Australians, the nation’s most disad-
vantaged minority. She expressed confidence that the gap would be halved in infant mortality for Aborigines by 2018, and that all four-year-olds in remote areas would have access to nursery education by 2013. Aboriginal children are twice as likely to die before the age of five than children in the broader Australian community. Gillard also said there had been “improvement” towards another three of the six goals: improving literacy and numeracy, school completion and employment. “With faster improvement over time, we believe these can be reached,” Gillard said.
But she warned that the final target, halving the life expectancy gap by 2031, would be “most challenging of all” and progress was yet to be measured. On average, Aboriginal men die 11.5 years younger than non-Aboriginals, while for women the gap is 9.7 years. “It will be extremely challenging,” the prime minister said. Aborigines, whose cultures stretch back tens of thousands of years, are believed to have numbered around one million at the time of white settlement, but there are now just 470,000 out of a total population of 22 million.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

KUPANG - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono here Wednesday said there must be no room for violence, and all potentials for violence and social tensions must be suppressed firmly in accordance with the legal and democratic norms. “Although in a democratic country, we have freedom of expression and assembly, we must realize that there can be no room nor tolerance for speeches enticing people to acts of violence, much less to murder,” the president said in his speech at a National Press Day function here. If there is a group or an organization repeatedly committing or calling for violent acts, security authorities must disband such an organization in line with the existing regulations and democratic ethics, according to the head of state. The president said the recent violence in Temanggung and Pandeglang could have been prevented if local security personnel had been more pro-active and faster, and all parties, especially regional leaders at the village, sub district and subdistrict levels, had cared for and were committed to peace and tolerance.
Yudhoyono instructed the National Police to investigate and arrest the perpetrators and leaders of the anarchic acts. JAKARTA – The United States on Tuesday condemned an outbreak of bloody religious violence in Indonesia which has left three people dead and several churches badly damaged. The violence erupted on Sunday when a 1,000-strong mob of Muslim extremists attacked members of the minority Ahmadiyah sect in West Java province. A shocking video of the lynching shows the Muslim fanatics armed with machetes, sticks and rocks screaming “Allahu Akbar” (God is Greatest) as they set upon their victims in a wild frenzy. In a separate incident on Tuesday, more than 1,500 Muslims went on the rampage in Central Java, setting two churches alight and ransacking a school, after a Christian man was sentenced to five years’ jail for blaspheming Islam.The group wanted him punished with death. “The United States joins the vast majority of Indonesians in deploring the vio-
lence in Indonesia directed at members of the Ahmadiyah community that resulted in the deaths of three people and the wounding of several others over this past weekend,” US ambassador to Indonesia, Scot Marciel, said. “We also note with concern the recent church burnings in Central Java.” Human rights organizations have urged Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to do more to combat intolerance in the majority Muslim country of 240 million people. NUSA DUA - A moderate earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale jolted Nusa Dua resort in the tourist island of Bali on Tuesday night. According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the epicenter of the earthquake was located 235 kilometers southwest of Nusa Dua at a depth of 10 kilometers in the sea. But there was no immediate report of casualties and material damage from the earthquake, located at the coordinate of 10.37 degrees southern latitude and 113.79 degrees eastern longitude. Some people in Jember district, East Java, also felt the magnitude of the earthquake. “I was awakened from my sleep as I felt my bed was swaying,” said Rahmawati, a resident of Mangli village in Kaliwates subdistrict, Jember, on Wednesday morning. Rahmawati said she stayed awake for fear of a stronger aftershock. “I stayed awake for about two hours but there was nothing so I went back to sleep,” Rahmawati said. Earlier at about 3.16 on Tues-
day afternoon another temblor measuring 5 on the Richter scale also jolted the eastern Indonesian city of Ambon in Maluku province. Its epicenter was located 6.00 degrees southern latitude and 127 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 380 kilometers in the sea, some 265 kilometers southwest of Ambon. On Monday afternoon, Padang Sidempuan district in North Sumatra was also rocked by an earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale. According to the Medan Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, the epicenter of the earthquake was at 0.81 degree Northern Latitude and 98.65 degree Eastern Longitude or 93 km Southwest of Padang Sidempuan at a depth of 93 km. The temblor was felt in Sibolga, Central Tapanuli District and Aek Gondang, Mandailing Natal District at 3.4 MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity), while in Dolok Sanggul, Humbang Hasundutan District the temblor‘s intensity was only three MMI. Although the epicenter of the earthquake was in the ocean, the temblor did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.
“Having been analyzed, in fact, there are 45,557 hotel rooms in Bali, and 85 percent of them are concentrated in Badung, Denpasar and Gianyar. It’s not balanced,” said Chief of Bali Investment Board (BPM), I Nyoman Suwirya Patra, in Denpasar. According to him, construction of new hotels in these three regions should be stopped for a while because accommodation in the regions becoming the mainstay for tourists was too crowded. Investors were expected to divert their investment to other regions. Suwirya Patra recognized that investment climate in Indonesia, especially Bali, in 2010 was conducive enough. Bali was ranked fourth, while the first rank was occupied by Greater Jakarta, and then followed by East Java and Papua on the third
rank. Tertiary sector, especially in the area of tourism remained a leading sector even reached 82 percent. Meanwhile, the agricultural sector was less than 1 percent and the remaining was industrial sector. “Our party constantly attempt to promote investment in agricultural sector of Bali. However, it has not been able to attract investors having more interests to invest in the leading sectors of Bali. They preferred to invest in agricultural sector in Sulawesi or Kalimantan,” he said. Moratorium would encourage equitable tourism development in all regencies throughout Bali. “The development of accommodation and the arrangement of tourist objects should not only carried out in South Bali but also all over Bali as in North Bali. For that purpose, it requires an adequate infrastructure. Government needs to establish a wider road to West Bali, East Bali, and North Bali,” he said. He suggested that Bali Provincial Government had to provide incentives for investors who were willing to invest in Karangasem, Singaraja and other disadvantaged regions to encourage the tourism sector in the region. “Incentives can include income tax relief in order investors can get interested to invest their capitals in the regions needing investment,” he said. Bayung Gede Village as Tourism Pilot Project Bayung Gede Village, Kintamani subdistrict, Bangli Regency, is developed into a tourism pilot project 2010. “Previously, we have already made comprehensive studies on various aspects and is now determined to be a pilot project of community-based tourism 2010,” said Village Chief of Bayung Gede I Wayan Suwela. He added, since the village was declared as a pilot project, his party received the help and facilities from the National Program for Community Empowerment (PNPM). Bayung Gede Village is one of 11 villages in Indonesia developed into a pilot project for community-based tourism. Meanwhile, Udayana University has performed various studies in relation to the project since 2005 concerning with several aspects of Bayung Gede Village. “Previously Bayung Gede Village was just as a backup, but having been reviewed by a team from central government, our village were finally selected,” he explained. Similarly, he mentioned that the basic reason on the selection of Bayung Gede Village as tourism pilot project 2010 was stated in the letter from the Coordinating Ministry for People’s Welfare No. 10.13.834/KMD/D/VII/V/2010. With the publication of the letter, it meant in the development of community-based cultural tourism of Bayung Gede, the government would allocate a fund worth IDR 2.5 billion. The main factor of Bayung Gede Village selected as a pilot project, according to Suwela, was caused by a unique tradition owned by the village prevailing a prohibition to newlywed couple. In the village, the couple recently married is not allowed to enter into the home yard and not regarded as residents of the Bayung Gede Village before paying tumbakan (a kind of dowry) submitted to the village in the form of two bulls and undertaking particular fasting. In addition, the newlywed couple was required to make a procession called penyekeban (maturation) by living in a small shack at the end of the local village. In addition to this unique tradition, Bayung Gede also has a system of government practiced from time immemorial called saih nembelas system. This traditional government system, continued Suwela, ran the administration chaired by a leader managing the local temples and traditional village. “With this traditional leadership system, the residents of our vil-
lage remain well united up to these days,” he said. Regarding to livelihood, he explained that since 2005 most local residents had relied on the crops obtained from planting citrus, while previously they only cultivated cassava and gogo rice variety planted on non-irrigated field. In the meantime, for the management of Bayung Gede Village as a tourism pilot project, Suwela added, his party would establish a committee. “In years to come, this committee will manage the assistance obtained and at the same time build the tourism at Gede Bayung Village,” he concluded. With a hammer, gently crack the claws and harder sections of shell. Finely chop 6 shallots and 2 stalks lemon grass. Steep 2 teaspoons tamarind in half a cup of boiling water. Chop a handful of fresh coriander leaves. In a food processor, grind together 3 cloves garlic, 1 tablespoon fresh galangal, 2-3 birdseye chillies, seeded, 4 candlenuts (or substitute 8-10 cashews) and 1 teaspoon blachan (hard dark brown shrimp paste), 1 teaspoon turmeric and salt and pepper to taste. Heat 3 tablespoons oil in a large wok or pan, and fry the paste until fragrant. Add shallots, lemon grass, crab pieces and 2 cups coconut milk. Simmer for quarter of an hour. Strain the tamarind water and add half to the sauce. Taste and add more if you wish. Ladle curvy into a serving dish and scatter the fresh coriander on top. Serve with plain rice. Germany, the world’s second biggest exporter after China, also took in imports worth 797.6 billion euros, the Destatis office said, and a jump of 20.0 percent from the level in 2009. Germany has been criticized by eurozone partners with weaker economies for not buying more
goods from them, but a breakdown of the figures showed imports rose faster than exports for both the eurozone and broader 27member European Union in 2010. German exports to eurozone partners, which numbered 15 last year, grew by 12.7 percent while imports were up by 16.7 percent.

LONDON – The London Stock Exchange Group PLC and TMX Group Inc., which operates the Toronto Stock Exchange, are merging to create one of the world’s largest stock markets, the companies announced Wednesday. The deal will be an all-share merger of equals, with headquarters in the U.K. and Canada. Both exchanges are heavily weighted with mining stocks and a combination would create the world’s biggest exchange for mining and energy stocks. The companies said they expect to realize annual savings of 35 million pounds ($56 million) by the second year of the merger. LSE Chief Executive Xavier Rolet will be CEO of the new company, LSEG-TMX, while TMX CEO Thomas Kloet will become president. “Canadian customers will benefit from access to one of the world’s deepest capital pools while European issuers will have an effective gateway to North American financial markets,” Kloet said. Rolet said: “We are aiming at nothing less than becoming a true powerhouse in the global exchange business.” LSE shareholders will hold 55 percent of the new company and TNX will have 45 percent of the enlarged share capital. The merged group will be listed in Toronto and London. The combination will have the world’s largest number of listing, more than 6,700 companies with an aggregate value of $5.8 trillion, the partners said. For the year ending Sept. 30, the London exchange reported revenues of $1.03 billion while TMX report $636 million. LSE Group also owns Borsa Italiana in Milan, while TMX also operates the Montreal Exchange, the NGX energy business in Calgary, and the TSX Venture Exchange in Calgary and Vancouver.
For the full EU, German exports gained 14 percent, but imports rose by 17.5 percent. Germany, which has the biggest European economy, and France, which has the second biggest economy in the now 17member eurozone, is pressing heavily indebted partners to re-
form their economies in exchange for financial backing. Officials in Berlin have estimated the German economy will grow by 2.3 percent, and that its public deficit will fall below the EU’s 3.0 percent limit this year to 2.5 percent of gross domestic product (GDP). German growth has been driven by exports, but falling unemployment, higher wages and increased corporate investment had raised hopes that domestic demand would help underpin a sustained
expansion of activity. In December however, German exports grew by 0.5 percent on a monthly basis, while imports fell by 2.3 percent. While China is growing in importance as a trade partner, eurozone countries, others in Eastern Europe and the United States are also key buyers of products made in Germany, ING senior economist Carsten Brzeski noted. “It is this diversification which should be a warrantor for further export strength in 2011,” he said.
Toyota trying to move beyond safety concerns Associated Press
WASHINGTON – Toyota Motor Corp., which built its reputation in the U.S. on safety and reliability, has been cleared by the government of electronic problems in its vehicles. Now it needs to convince consumers that it has put its safety recalls in the rear view mirror. The Transportation Department said Tuesday that electronic flaws were not to blame for reports of sudden, unintended acceleration that have figured in the recalls of more than 12 million Toyota vehicles globally. The findings bolstered Toyota’s contention that the company had directly dealt with the problems through its recalls and is making safety paramount in its lineup. Analysts said it would take more than a government report to repair Toyota’s once pristine image for producing quality vehicles. Toyota was the only major automaker to see a U.S. sales decline last year at 0.4 percent and saw its U.S. market share fall nearly 2 percentage points to 15.2 percent. The decline came even though total U.S. sales rose 11 percent for the year. “This is really something that is going to take years and years to recover,” said Rebecca Lindland, director of automotive research with consulting firm IHS Automotive. Toyota has wrestled with recalls to fix sticking accelerator pedals, gas pedals that became trapped in floor mats and other safety issues, forcing the world’s No. 1 automaker to scramble to protect its reputation. Toyota paid the U.S. government a record $48.8 million in fines for its handling of three recalls. Toyota said the government report should “further reinforce confidence in the safety of Toyota and Lexus vehicles” and “put to rest unsupported speculation” about the
company’s electronic throttle control systems, which are “well-designed and well-tested to ensure that a real world, uncommanded acceleration of the vehicle cannot occur.” The company said it was “focused on listening to our customers and constantly improving our products and service.” Transportation officials, helped by NASA engineers, said the 10month study of Toyota vehicles concluded the acceleration cases could have been caused by mechanical defects already covered by recalls and suggested in some cases drivers hit the gas when they intended to press the brakes. The study, launched at the request of Congress, responded to consumer complaints that flawed electronics could be the culprit behind incidents that led to Toyota’s spate of recalls. The automaker faces hundreds of lawsuits over alleged unwanted acceleration. Some consumer groups said the study was limited in its
reach, and they would continue to press the company over safety. “We don’t think the story’s over — not by a long shot,” said Sean Kane, founder of Safety Research & Strategies Inc., a Massachusetts-based firm that has studied Toyota’s recalls. Steve Berman, an attorney for plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit against Toyota, said the report’s findings were “in stark contrast to what Toyota drivers across the country experienced — and continue to experience — even after the series of recalls.” He said there were too many reports of unwanted acceleration in vehicles fixed under the recall to eliminate electronics. Other automakers have faced similar problems in the past. Audi dealt with a spate of unintended acceleration problems with its 5000 sedan in the late 1980s. The car was recalled after complaints that it would suddenly accelerate when shifted from park to drive or reverse. NHTSA found that most of the inci-
dents were caused by drivers putting their feet on the wrong pedals. Audi’s U.S. sales bottomed out in 1991 at just over 12,000 vehicles, but the German automaker has made strides with sporty luxury vehicles. Last year the company sold 101,629 vehicles nationwide, according to Ward’s AutoInfoBank. David Champion, senior director of auto testing for Consumer Reports magazine, said questions about Toyota’s reliability first started to surface in the magazine’s annual subscriber survey in 2007. In last year’s survey, Champion said, Toyota had some vehicles drop to below average in reliability for the first time in decades. “I do think they lost direction in some ways,” Champion said. “It’ll be interesting to see how they change direction and go back to what they’re good at: building somewhat boring in some ways but very efficient and very reliable sedans that people want to buy.”

Lindsay Lohan to face felony charge over necklace Associated Press Writer
LOS ANGELES – Lindsay Lohan is due in court to face a new judge, and a new criminal charge, that could return the troubled starlet to jail rather than the big screen. The “Mean Girls” star is due to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon on a felony grand theft charge that prosecutors say they will file over a $2,500 necklace reported stolen by an upscale jewelry store. The charge is the latest — and most serious — legal problem for the actress, who remains on probation for a 2007 drunken driving case. Police and prosecutors allege Lohan, 24, took the necklace from a store in the beachside community of Venice on Jan. 22, weeks after she was released from a rehab facility where she was also accused of misconduct. Lohan’s attorney has denied the actress stole the necklace. “We vehemently deny these allegations and, if charges are filed, we will fight them in court, not in the press,” attorney Shawn Chapman Holley said in a statement Saturday. Holley did not respond to requests for comment Tuesday. The former Disney star has struggled with the terms of her probation, and was sentenced to re-
hab twice and jail twice last year. She is expected to be booked on the theft charge after her court appearance, but her continued freedom will be up to Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Keith Schwartz, who will oversee Lohan’s first appearance. The judge will determine the actress’ release conditions and whether she has violated the terms of her probation, which required her to obey all laws and submit to random drug and alcohol testing. The jewelry case is not Lohan’s only criminal concern. Prosecutors in Riverside County are still considering whether to charge the actress with battery for an altercation with a rehab worker at the Betty Ford Center in December. The worker was fired after giving an on-camera interview to celebrity website TMZ, but district attorney’s spokesman John Hall has said the allegations against Lohan was under review. The threat of incarceration has hung over Lohan since May, when a judge handling her DUI case determined she violated her probation by missing weekly alcohol education classes. Her three stints in jail in the past three years have all been shortened by overcrowding and the fact that she could not be held without bail on a misdemeanor.

LONDON – Great wealth became J. Paul Getty III’s great curse. At age 16, he was held for ransom for five months by captors who cut off his ear when his oil-rich grandfather balked at paying. After his 1973 release, he became addicted to drugs and alcohol, diving deeper into a hippie counterculture that seemed the opposite of his family’s capitalistic roots. He was only in his 20s when he suffered a devastating stroke that left him severely impaired and in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. He died Saturday at age 54. Getty “never let his handicap keep him from living life to the fullest and he was an inspiration to all of us, showing us how to stand up to all adversity,” his son, the actor Balthazar Getty, said in a statement. The elder Getty died surrounded by his family at his country estate in Buckinghamshire northwest of London. The cause of death was not disclosed, but Getty had been gravely ill for some time. Born in 1956 to oil wealth counted in the billions of dollars, Getty’s life was upended when he was kidnapped in Rome in 1973. He was a tempting target — his grandfather was often said to be one of the world’s first billionaires. He cut a dashing figure, with tight jeans, open shirts and long,
flowing hair — resembling, at times, a young Mick Jagger. At the time of his abduction, Getty was known as the “golden hippie.” He hung out with young leftists and counterculture types in Piazza Navona, Campo dei Fiori and Piazza Farnese in Rome. At first, some thought the kidnapping was staged to extract money from the grandfather. Friends at that time said the youngster had actually joked about such a tactic.

Car-Size Asteroid to Pass Close by Earth Wednesday An asteroid about the size of a car will pass close by Earth Wednesday (Feb. 9), the second space rock in five days to fly near – but pose no threat of hitting – our planet. The asteroid is called 2011 CA7 and will fly within 64,300 miles (103,480 kilometers) of Earth tomorrow, according to an alert from NASA’s Asteroid Watch program. It is about 9 1/2 feet across (nearly 3 meters) and was discovered by astronomers earlier this month. The asteroid will make its closest pass by Earth at around 2:25 p.m. EST (1925 GMT), according to the small-body database overseen by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. On Feb. 4, the asteroid 2011 CQ 1 sailed within 3,400 miles (5471 km) of Earth during its brief encounter.
That asteroid was about 4 feet (1.3 meters) wide, less than half the size of 2011 CA7. For comparison, the distance between Earth and the moon is about 238,900 miles (384,402 km). Like Friday’s asteroid flyby, 2011 CA7 poses no threat of impacting Earth. Even if it did enter Earth’s atmosphere, the space rock would never survive the fiery trip to the surface. It’s so small, it would likely break apart or incinerate on the way down. Scientists say asteroids the size of 2011 CA7 and 2011 CQ 1 regularly fly close by Earth, but their small size makes them hard to spot.
“It’s predicted that tiny space rocks pass between Earth and moon almost daily but are too small to be detected and pose very little threat,” NASA’s asteroid-tracking team wrote in a Twitter message Monday (Feb. 7). NASA and other dedicated astronomers routinely track asteroids and comets as part of a near-Earth observation program designed to seek out potentially hazardous objects that could pose an impact risk to Earth. Potentially hazardous asteroids are space rocks about 490 feet (nearly 150 meters) wide or larger that fly too close to Earth for comfort, NASA officials have said. The space agency’s Near-Earth Object office at JPL coordinates efforts to detect, track and characterize the threats posed by asteroids and comets.
SYDNEY – Australia said Wednesday carbon emissions will rise more than predicted by 2020 in the world’s biggest per capita polluter, blaming its Asian-led mining boom. The climate change department predicted Australia’s emissions will surge by as much as 24 percent by 2020 compared to 2000 levels, four percent higher than last year’s projections. “Growth to 2020 is dominated by emissions associated with the extraction and processing of energy resources driven by strong export demand,” the department said in its annual emissions report. “Fugitive emissions from coal mines and oil and gas projects, as well as direct fuel combustion emissions from LNG projects, account for almost half of the growth in Australia’s total emissions from 2010 to 2020.” The report found Australia was on track to reduce emissions to 106 percent of 1990 levels by 2012, two percent lower than its target agreed under the Kyoto protocol. But it also said total emissions would grow 1.8 per-
cent annually over the coming decade, compared with 0.4 percent since 2000. By 2030 the report said emissions could be 44 percent above 2000 levels, though it cautioned this was a less reliable prediction. Australia is the world’s worst per capita polluter and home to its biggest coal export port, shipping millions of tonnes of energy and steelmaking coal to Asian markets annually, as well as iron ore and other minerals. It is also heavily dependent on coal-fired power stations for electricity, a sector the report said accounted for 36 percent of Australia’s total emissions in 2010. Direct fuel combustion and agriculture each contributed about 15 percent and transport was the third biggest, at 14 percent. The energy sector had spurred most of the emissions growth since 1990, “driven by Australia’s relatively high rates of economic growth and international demand for Australia’s resources,” it added. But renewable energy incentives would see growth in electricity-related pollution slow to just six percent over the next decade, the report said.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Pacific walrus need additional protection from the threat of climate warming but cannot be added to the threatened or endangered list because other species are a higher priority, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said Tuesday. Walrus will be added to the “warranted but precluded” list, said agency spokesman Bruce Wood, a designation under the Endangered Species Act that allows delays in listing if the agency is making progress listing other species and does not have resources to make a decision on others. “The threats to the walrus are very real, as evidenced by this ‘warranted’ finding,” said Geoff Haskett, the service’s Alaska region director, in a statement. “But its greater population numbers and ability to adapt to landbased haulouts make its immediate situation less dire than those facing
other species such as the polar bear.” He said cooperation with Alaska Native groups, the state and other partners could lessen the long-term impact of climate change for the walrus and help it avoid an endangered listing. The decision was condemned by the Center for Biological Diversity, which in 2008 petitioned to list walrus as threatened or endangered, citing threats to walrus’ sea ice habitat. Center spokeswoman Shaye Wolf said the warranted but precluded designation is a black hole for imperiled species. Some have been so designated for more than 20 years. “This decision acknowledges the walrus is facing extinction due to climate change but the Obama administration is withholding the protections that could help the walrus survive,” Wolf said. Scientists at the National Snow and Ice Data Center have tracked a steady decline in sea ice in recent decades.
Climate models have projected that summer sea ice could disappear by 2030. Alaska’s walrus population spends virtually the entire winter in the Bering Sea on the edge of sea ice that forms every year. In spring, as temperatures warm, ice melts and the edge of the sea ice moves north. Older males spend the summer in the Bering Sea, foraging from islands or remote coastal shores. Females and pups, however, ride the ice edge through the Bering Strait and into the Chukchi and Beaufort seas, diving to the shallow continental shelf in search of clams as pups rest above them, safe from predators. In recent years, summer sea ice in summer has receded well beyond the continental shelf over water too deep for walrus to dive to reach clams. Walrus in three of the last four years congregated by the thousands on Alaska’s northwest shore. Larger numbers took refuge on the Russian side of the Chukchi Sea.

Loew hints Ballack’s Germany days may be over Agence France Presse BERLIN – Germany coach Joachim Loew on Tuesday hinted ex-captain Michael Ballack may no longer have a future in the national side after saying the veteran is not his first choice in midfield. Ballack, 34, has been left out of the Germany squad to face Italy in a friendly in Dortmund on Wednesday as he works his way back to fitness after four months out with injury. Having missed last year’s World Cup with after tearing ankle ligaments, Germany finished third in South Africa as Ballack’s defensive midfield role was filled by Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira alongside Bastian Schweinsteiger. GENEVA – European football clubs on Tuesday voiced strong opposition to talk of a winter World Cup and criticised the way world governing body FIFA has been handling changes in football. “The time for monopolies is over. Football needs democracy and transparency,” said European Club Association chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. “ECA members agree that all clubs must be meaningfully involved in all decisions affecting club football. Now is the time for change,” Rummenigge, who is also chairman of Bayern Munich, added after the 136 member association’s general assembly here. In a statement, the ECA expressed “its concern on the way matters of such importance are managed by football’s world governing body” and “its opposition” to the
“disruption” of mooted changes to the international fixture list including a winter World Cup. It pointed to the sudden discovery of a FIFA decision last October to add eight new dates to the international match list in 2011 to 2014 “without any consultation” or “precise reason”, despite growing warnings about player exhaustion. “ECA is supportive of national team football but also believes that player’s exhaustion through the excessive number of games must be addressed as a top priority,” it said in a statement. “Currently this is not the case.” The stance of powerful European clubs, which own many of the world’s top international players, added to a wave of discontent with FIFA in the wake of the controversial race late last year to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. They called for fixed rules for several seasons, a limit of one international tournament a year and a
clear seven week break after major international tournaments like the World Cup continental championships. Clubs have repeatedly complained about the growing intensity and breadth of league, European and international matches and the impact on players, as well as transfer and commercial issues over the years. They have gradually united with the lead of big name clubs, forging ties with UEFA despite tensions. But club executives feel increasingly left out of FIFA’s decision making which they argue is now “heavily affecting club football without the involvement of the stakeholders concerned”. Manchester United chief executive David Gill said that progress had been made in Europe. “We have excellent dialogue with UEFA at the moment and we hope to have that with FIFA,” he told journalists.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Tiger Woods insists his game is coming together and it’s just a matter of time before he wins his first tournament in more than a year. Speaking ahead of the Dubai Desert Classic, the third-ranked Woods says he’s overcome rough spots in his form before and is working on adjustments to his swing and “philosophy” on the game. He says he felt he was able to improve his swing at Torrey Pines despite finishing tied for 44th. It was his worst start to the season since turning professional. The Desert Classic starts Thursday. Woods is in a group with No. 1 Lee Westwood and second-ranked Martin Kaymer. Woods did not play in Dubai last year, but he won the tournament in 2006 and 2008.

Miami held Indiana to 28 percent shooting in the fourth quarter, giving up only 15 points after yielding a 97 in the first three periods, and saw Mario Chalmers force Dahntay Jones into a key 5-second violation with 8.9 seconds remaining. James took care of the rest, and Miami moved within a half-game of idle Boston for the Eastern Conference’s best record. “We figured it out in the fourth quarter,” James said. “Held them to 15 points and we executed.” In his last 20 games, James is averaging 29.6 points, 8.6 rebounds and 7.5 assists. Force India targets fifth with new car Force India has set its sights on finishing fifth in the constructors’ championship this year, after unveiling the VJM04 that it hopes can help it deliver podium finishes in 2011.
Lorenzo: Yamaha needs to improve MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo says this year’s Yamaha is still not as competitive as he would want, the Spaniard admitting the engine is lacking power. “In my opinion we haven’t made a clear leap forward,” Lorenzo was quoted as saying by Motosprint. “I know exactly what we need, but we haven’t got there yet. “We need more power, so more speed when accelerating, and better traction, always for the same goal: we aren’t strong yet at turn exit. “The new engine is more or less like the previous one. The most evident progress is in the anti-spin system, because it’s more efficient now. I’m happy with that. It does help, but we need more horsepower. “I don’t like the new chassis, because
there’s more chatter. But I’m not particularly worried about that. I repeat: the priority at this time is power,” added last year’s champion. Honda riders set the pace in the opening test of the year at Sepang, with Lorenzo only fourth quickest overall. The Yamaha rider claimed his team will need to take a step forward in order to be able to enjoy the kind of success seen last year. “Yes, laptimes are good, but at the moment, with this bike, it’s difficult to do better,” he said. “I would like a better bike, and this is what I’ve asked of the engineers. I think every rider asks for that. “I’m not saying it’s not a winner anymore: I’m saying that in order to win the number of races won last year we need progress. At the mo-
ment, I think this bike would not enable me to repeat a successful season like 2010. “Honda is going very well: they started to make up ground midway through last year and now they’ve made another step forward. This must worry us.” He also conceded his new teammate Ben Spies was strong than he had anticipated. “Spies is strong. Honestly, he is faster than I expected. Simoncelli has improved a lot, he’s done a great laptime. Surely Honda helps him, but in order to go as quick as he has, it means that he’s made a lot of progress too. “The competition is getting stronger and stronger: this will be a tough, hard-fought season. That’s why I would like us to do a big step forward too.”

As the team revealed its 2011 car during an online launch on Tuesday, its CEO Otmar Szafnauer set out the team’s ambitious targets for the forthcoming season.”Last year we finished a strong seventh - and we were sixth for most of the season,” he said. “We always want to improve and our objectives this year are to finish higher than last year. “So we are targeting fifth place in the championship – and in order to do that we have to score points from the beginning and then all the way through to the end. To do that, we need strong development during the year – and if all goes well, then perhaps even a podium finish or two is an aim.” Adrian Sutil, who is remaining at Force India for a fifth season in F1, believes that the fifth place target is definitely achieveable. “We should be up there to score a lot of points,” he said. “It is important to keep that level, and we must not tail off towards the end of the season.” Although Force India does not have the finances to take on the might of the big budget teams like Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull Racing, Szafnauer still believes that the team can make good progress this year. “We probably have half the personnel of some of the other bigger teams, but we know that is where we
are,” he said. “We have honed our processes and procedures. We know what we have to do and we go out and do it. We punch above our weight, and our target is to do so even more. “It is difficult in the midfield, and the more we move up the more difficult it becomes. But we are up for the challenge. We think fifth in an achievable objective and target – and hopefully we can get podium finishes if all goes well.” Although Force India has lost leading technical figures James Key and Mark Smith to other teams over the past 12 months, Szafnauer believes the team still has a very solid infrastructure. “We have strength in depth with the technical staff,” he said. “We have many people who have been here a long time, and many people coming into their own. “We have created a good mechanical package that is an evolution of last year’s car, and we are working hard on the aerodynamic package. “We have increased our aerodynamic personnel. We run 24/7 in the wind tunnel, which is something that is recent, and with those positive changes we will be able to compete. It is never good to lose senior technical people, but such is the game in F1.”
