IRANIAN EXILED OPPOSITION Maryam Rajavi, the leader of the political arm of the Iranian opposition group Mujahedeen-e-Khalq, said in a statement that she hoped the Islamic Republic would fall apart with Rafsanjani’s passing. “With the death of Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, one of the two pillars and key to the equilibrium of the religious fascism ruling Iran has collapsed and the regime in its entirety is approaching overthrow,” she said.

KUWAIT Kuwait’s ruling emir, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, sent condolences over Rafsanjani, saying he “prayed to Allah the almighty to bestow blessings on the deceased.”

TURKEY Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu offered his condolences over Twitter, saying he was “deeply saddened” by Rafsanjani’s death.

LEBANON The secretary-general of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, called Rafsanjani “a great man” and a “protector and supporter” of modern political Shiism in the Middle East. He lamented Rafsanjani’s passing as a loss to the Muslim world. Hezbollah, which is also a leading political party in Lebanon.

Bali oversupply in tourist accommodation

Tourist visit rises, but occupancy rate low DENPASAR —

The growth of tourist arrival in Bali in 2016 was quite a lot. However, on the other hand, the hotel occupancy rate was not too good, moving in the range of 46 percent. Actually, this percentage is not good enough for the circles of hoteliers. This condition needs to be noticed, so that it will not happen again in the future. There should be a strategic measure taken by the government in encouraging business climate and hospitality, particularly in tourist accommodation sector in Bali, so that it could grow and provide benefits for all components. In response to these conditions, Chairman of the Indonesia Employers Association (Apindo) of Bali, Panudiana Kuhn, recently revealed at Shankara Resto Sanur that what happened all this time in Bali has been oversupply. Hotel, souvenir market, travel agency, spa and others have appeared in so large numbers. So, it results in oversupply. Although the growth of tourist arrival rose 20 percent per year, the hotel occupancy remains 46 percent. It is poor and should be 70 percent. It happens because, in addition to hotels, now there are also boarding houses occupied by travelers and villas contracted on annual basis. Many travelers stay there, said Panudiana Kuhn in a special interview with BaliTV. To anticipate this situation, Panudiana Kuhn expected that relevant components, such as the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI), district / municipal government and the provincial government must undertake strategic efforts. Therefore, the immigration as the leading sector has to work hard. Moreover, police institution currently has no authority to do so. In the past, each foreigner coming to Bali had to report to the nearest police station. But currently police no longer have such authority. “Hopefully, there would be discussion ahead because the supervision against foreigners should be tightened. Moreover, there is indication that many foreigners currently violate and commit crimes and these are facts. When needed, we are ready to help the immigration,” he said. (rah)

2016 was hottest year ever recorded in New Zealand

WELLINGTON — Unusually warm winds and seas helped make last year the hottest ever recorded in New Zealand. The average temperature during 2016 was 13.4 Celsius (56.1 Fahrenheit), according to a report released Monday by the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research. That was nearly 1 degree Celsius warmer than normal and fractionally hotter than the previous record set in 1998. The climate agency began keeping records in 1909. Agency forecaster Chris Brandolino said ocean temperatures around New Zealand were warmer than normal for the first seven months of 2016 and that winds during the year came more often than usual from the north rather than the cooler south. He said there was no clear reason for the 2016 changes but that they had come against a backdrop of global warming caused by increased carbon emissions. “We are expecting temperatures to continue to rise,” Brandolino said. “It’s very concerning.” New Zealand’s economy relies

on farming, an industry which is particularly dependent on the weather. Anders Crofoot, the vice president for advocacy group Federated Farmers, said sheep and beef farmers in north Canterbury were hit by a drought last year. He said one downside of climate change was the possibility of more volatile weather, such as heavy but infrequent rainfall. He said in the longer term, climate change could force farmers like kiwifruit growers to move or consider alternative crops as the weather became less favorable to them. He added that certain crops like avocados and oranges could benefit from warmer weather. He said farmers were beginning to talk about climate change more and to consider it their planning. He said many farmers were trying to find ways to reduce their own carbon emissions and farm more efficiently. (ap)

Scientists watch growing Antarctic crack but aren’t alarmed

WASHINGTON — Scientists are watching, but not alarmed by, a growing crack at the edge of a key floating ice shelf in Antarctica. New images show the long-watched rift in the Larsen C ice shelf grew 11 miles (18 kilometers) in the last few weeks. The crack is now about 60 miles long (97 kilometers) and about 300 feet wide (100 meters). If it grows another dozen miles, a Delaware-sized iceberg could break off and float away. University of Colorado scientist Ted Scambos said that could happen soon, likely in March, and would “cut deeper to the bone” of the ice shelf, changing its shape. Ice shelves — sheets of floating ice — wrap around three-quarters of the South Pole’s coastline. They provide protection and support for inland glaciers. Scambos, who is about to travel to Antarctica for research, and other scientists said they don’t see other key signs that this growing crack would result in a catastrophic collapse of the entire shelf. A chunk of ice will break off, “But it’s not going to lead to a runaway disintegration,” he said Friday. That’s what happened suddenly in 2002 to the smaller Larsen B shelf, allowing inland glaciers to shrink rapidly. NASA glaciologist Jay Zwally said there’s no rapid melting with ponds of water on top of the ice this time. “By itself this calving is not a cause for alarm,” Zwally said. Large icebergs do periodically break off from Antarctica naturally, Zwally said. “But the ice shelf has been thinning as other ice shelves have been thinning in the Antarctic peninsula,” he said. ASITA has free-visa policy evaluated

TABANAN - Though experiencing serious damage due to landslide a few weeks ago, piodalan or anniversary of the Teratai Bang Temple falling on Tumpek Landep next February will be still held on schedule. Hamlet chief of Bukit Catu, Wayan Sarma, said on Sunday (Jan. 8) the piodalan to be held belongs to the small one and pilgrims will not be limited to say prayers even though the temple condition is damaged. Condition of the innermost courtyard of Teratai Bang Temple remains intact, but the other parts are broken and buried in the ground. High enough volume of soil covering up the part of middle courtyard has been largely moved by heavy equipment. Although there is still soil covering up its surface, it is not as high as when the disaster occurred. According to Sarma, almost 22 points of the temple building are damaged and need rebuilding. Sarma added if there are devotees wishing to come and conduct mutual cooperation, they are required to clean up temple environment from rubbish. “Currently the soil is moved by using heavy equipment. It cannot be done manually,” he said. Nevertheless, in the future it is surely required volunteers to clean up the temple compound from landslides when the heavy equipment finalized its work. GIANYAR - A traveler from Australia was killed after swimming at Indrakila Garden Hotel on Jalan Raya Sanggingan, Kedewatan, Ubud, on Sunday (Jan. 8). The victim, Rodrigues, was known to die suddenly when swimming with his wife, Kubekcova, 34. Though he had been taken to Ubud Health Care Clinic, the victim’s life still could not be helped. As the information gathered, the victim and his wife swam together at the hotel on Sunday morning around 09:00. Few moments later, Kubekcova suddenly screamed for help. “From the restaurant, I heard a women screaming for help repeatedly. Having been noticed, the voice came from the swimming pool. I came to location to make sure with some hotel employees,” said Ni Ketut Jiwi Arlita when interrogated by police. When checked to the pool, this hotel employee was surprised to see Kubekcova was assuming the victim in unconscious condition, right in the northern side of the

pool. As mentioned, at that time the victim’s body already turned blue. Some hotel employees then helped move the victim who was then known to be lifeless. Hotel management then took the victim from Australia to Ubud Health Care Clinic and continued with the examination to Sanglah Hospital. Police who received the report also directly came down to the location to perform crime scene investigation and examine witnesses. Chief of Ubud Police, Nyoman Wirajaya, when asked for his confirmation justified the incident. Currently, his office is still awaiting the results of medical examination to ascertain the cause of victim’s death. Moreover, the victim is known to have no history of any pains. “We cannot ascertain about the cause of victim’s sudden death. BANGKOK - Widespread flooding in Thailand’s south has killed 21 people, hit rubber production in the region and shut down infrastructure, officials said on Monday, as the military government increased aid to floodaffected areas. The death toll from the floods stood at 21 on Monday with more than 330,000 households affected, according to the Department Disaster Prevention and Mitigation. Shivaratri as Sin Redemption Night, Perform Main Abstinences

Hindu community in Bali celebrates a unique Shivaratri Day. Shivaratri means the holy contemplation night or the sin redemption night. Shivaratri falls one day before new moon in the seventh month of Balinese calendar (Kapitu). On this day, Hindu devotees in Bali do fasting and meditation to get forgiveness from God for the sins caused by avidya (darkness). On that day, the Hindu community commonly performs three types of abstinence adjusted to the capabilities. The main abstinences are monabrata (no speaking), upawasa (fasting) and jagra (guarding, keeping awake for whole night). Medium abstinence only performs the upawasa and jagra, while the small abstinence just performs jagra. Shivaratri is often called pejagran day because on that day God in his manifestation as Lord Shiva in his function as destroyer does meditation for whole night. Therefore, on this day devotees invoke to him so that all the sins could be removed. Devotees usually do pejagran at temples or shrines while reading scriptures. The Hindu palm-leaf manuscript named Lubdaka written by Mpu Tanakung carries the procession of Shivaratri with a series as follows: firstly, taking a bath in the morning, putting on clean dressing and invoking holy water. Then, begin the fasting without food and drink. It’s a mental exercise in order to get a strength and durability against thirst and hunger. At night, it is resumed with the reading of Vedic scripture while keeping awake through the night to calm down the mind. Of course, it is commenced with the worship of God for forgiveness for the sins having been committed previously. In the Lubdaka palm-leaf manuscript is stated that though people are very guilty, even the most sinful, they still have the opportunity to destroy their sins

if they sincerely celebrate and implement the abstinence of Shivaratri. In the mythology, Lubdaka is mentioned as a hunter of animals in the forest. Every day, he always kills animals. READ Typical Kite Fighting of Buleleng Once upon a time, he returned to the forest for hunting. Unfortunately he was unlucky on that day, so that did not get any animals. Unwittingly, it was already dusk and it was getting darker. Actually he intended to go home, but it was extremely dark so that he did not know the right way home. He decided to stay, and for fear of being ambushed by beasts he climbed a bilva tree to lean. Unwittingly, underneath there is a clear

water lake with a shrine and lingam. To prevent from sleeping for fear of being attacked by animals, he eliminated his sleepiness while picking bilva leaves. He picked the bilva leaves one by one and then he dropped it so that hit the lingam underneath. Lubdaka did not realize that on that day was the Shivaratri (the night of Shiva) where Lord Shiva was meditating. When picking bilva leaves, he began to regret what he had committed in past times. He promised to himself to stop hunting. After staying up all night, the morning came and he went home. From that day, he stopped hunting and switched profession into a farmer. In keeping with the times, his health condition dropped and

eventually died. It is narrated that the soul of Lubdaka was hovering in the sky, did not know where to go. After that, the Cikrabala forces took him away to be included in the Candragomuka crater in Hell. At that time, Lord Shiva came and intercepted the Cikrabala forces. Cikrabala forces insisted on bringing the soul of Lubdaka to Hell because during his lifetime he often killed many forest animals. Lord Shiva explained that Lubdaka has made penance on the Shivaratri by staying up all night accompanied by remorse over his sins in the past. Thus, he deserved to get forgiveness and ultimately Lubdaka was taken to Shiva Loka. (kmb)

New Brazil prison clash leaves at least 4 dead in Amazon region SAO PAULO - A new prison uprising in Brazil early on Sunday left four dead, adding to the chaos in Brazil’s penitentiary system that has left almost 100 inmates killed in the past week in a gang war. The latest violence took place at the Desembargador Raimundo Vidal Pessoa jail in the center of the jungle city of Manaus, according to an emailed statement from the government penitentiary agency in Amazonas state, where the facility is located. Three of the dead were beheaded while one was strangled to death, according to the statement. It did not give a motive for the killings and it was not yet known if drug gangs were involved. In the last week, 64 inmates have been killed in prisons in or near Manaus. A prison uprising in the neighboring state of Roraima left at least 33 dead. Behind the bloodshed is an escalating feud between Brazil’s biggest drug gangs, which ended two decades of an uneasy working relationship about six months ago. Brazil’s most powerful gang, the Sao Paulo-based First Capital Command (PCC) split with the Rio de Janeiro-based Red Command gang when the PCC took over drug trading routes in Brazil’s southeast. Previously, the two groups worked together to ensure a heavy flow of drugs and arms over Brazil’s borders. Members of the PCC were targeted last Sunday in the first violent outbreak, which left 56 dead, many decapitated and butchered. It was Brazil’s deadliest uprising in more than two decades. It was the North Family gang, allied with the Red Command, that carried out the killings in that riot, authorities said. Five days later, PCC members killed 33 people at a Roraima state prison. Brutal scenes captured on a cellphone video spread widely on social media, in which the inmates are seen hacking away at bodies in acts of revenge. Authorities originally said 31 prisoners died in the Roraima uprising, but revised the total to 33 after finding two buried bodies on the prison grounds on Saturday. Experts say the PCC is moving to infiltrate areas in the Red Command’s home base of Rio and infiltrating Brazil’s Amazon region in efforts to control cocaine-smuggling river routes. Since it split with the PCC, the Red Command has allied itself with smaller regional gangs like the North Family to confront PCC. (rtr)

OPM`s flag raising in Melbourne`s Indonesian Consulate is crime: President Jokowi BATANG - The raising of the Free Papua Movements (OPMs) flag by an individual at the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Melbourne, Australia, was a purely criminal act, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) affirmed. “The crime concerns Australias domestic affairs and has nothing to do with Indonesia,” President Jokowi stated here, Monday. Minister Marsudi stressed on Sunday that the Australian authority should arrest and sentence the trespasser. “The Australian authority must conduct an investigation and im-

mediately take legal action against the perpetrator who had trespassed into the Indonesian Consulate in Melbourne,” she noted in a press statement. Minister Marsudi emphasized that the trespassing and flag raising incident in Melbourne is a crime that cannot be tolerated. To this end, Marsudi reminded that Australia, as a receiver country, has the responsibility and obligation to conduct a legal process against the criminal and provide security guarantee to all members of the Indonesian mission in accordance with the Vienna Convention 1961 and 1963 on Diplomatic and Consulate Relations. Indonesia hopes to produce 9,500 MW of geothermal power in 2025 JAKARTA - Geothermal power is expected to contribute 9,500 megawatts to the countrys energy requirement in 2025 when oil contribution is to be cutback by 30 percent. Stability of production of geothermal power is more reliable as it is not affected by weather, Deputy Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Arcandra Tahar said when visiting Pertamina Geothermal Energi (PGE) of Kamojang Area on Sunday. The superiority in production stability makes geothermal power base load in electricity provision by state electricity company PLM for the public, Arcandra said. Production of geothermal power as a base load would continue at full capacity when the use of power at its lowest level, he said. “Geothermal power plants (PLTP) could continue to operate at full capacity while oil fueled and coal fired power plants have to be shut down as bad weather,” he said. He said the challenge in the development of geothermal power is competitiveness of the geothermal power price.

Govt to revoke visa-free facility JAKARTA - The Indonesian government has decided to revoke its visa-free facility for a number of countries but it has not disclosed how many countries of the 169 facility recipients will be affected as it will still carry out further evaluations. According to Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Panjaitan, several visa-free facility recipients will be affected based on a preliminary evaluation but he would not reveal it too early, leaving it to the Immigration Directorate General to announce it later. The government has provided visa waiver facility to 169 countries in an effort to promote its tourism and support its target to win 20 million foreign tourist arrivals by 2019. In March 2015, the government granted the facility for 30 countries, taking the total number of beneficiaries of the policy to 45, including the 15 existing free visa recipients. By March 2016, the government has provided the facility to 169 recipients. The main objective of the policy is to promote the countrys tourism. However, many circles considered that the facility has the potential to be abused. It also seen to have failed in contributing to the economy.

The House of Representatives (DPR), for example, urged the government last month to evaluate the policy for fear it will threaten the states sovereignty. “At several working meetings of the House Commission I with the Foreign Minister, we asked the government to review the visa-free policy. We also asked (the foreign ministry) to convey it to President Joko Widodo and relevant ministries,” Chief of House Commission I Abdul Kharis Almasyhari said. According to him the visa-free policy prompted many illegal migrant workers to enter the country. It has also caused losses to Indonesias non-tax state revenues. Additionally, the policy may threaten the states sovereignty. This is because many Indonesians are not employed even as foreign workers enter the country, according to him. Thus, it creates unrest. Lawmaker Saleh Partaonan Daulay of House Commission IX of the House urged the government to evaluate, if not scrap, visa-waiver privileges for foreign nationals, claiming these are causing unrest to certain sections of the community. Reactions from around the world to the death of former Iranian President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani:

KUWAIT Kuwait’s ruling emir, Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, sent condolences over Rafsanjani, saying he “prayed to Allah the almighty to bestow blessings on the deceased.”

TURKEY Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu offered his condolences over Twitter, saying he was “deeply saddened” by Rafsanjani’s death.
