LOS ANGELES — Sandra Bullock reigned supreme at the 40th annual People’s Choice Awards, taking home four trophies as the evening’s top winner. The actress was named favorite movie actress, comedic actress, dramatic actress and shared the favorite movie duo award with “Gravity” co-star George Clooney. Bullock’s buddy comedy, “The Heat,” co-starring Melissa McCarthy, was awarded favorite comedic movie. Fans deemed Ellen DeGeneres their favorite daytime TV host, making her the woman who has gained the most People’s Choice Awards with a total of 14 trophies. “As a young girl growing up in New Orleans, if anyone would have told me I was going to win 14 People’s Choice Awards I...I mean 12, yes. 13, maybe. TOKYO — South Korean pop group BIGBANG is set to end a massively successful tour of Japan, cementing its status as one of the more popular boy bands in Asia. The five-member band closes out the tour, with stops at all six of Japan’s domed stadiums, with three shows starting Saturday in Osaka. The band is popular because, unlike

some of the manufactured Korean pop music, its members often write and produce their own music, a mix of electronic sound, hip hop and rap. That combination also means fans follow the band for other trends as well. “The fact that people look at what we created, whether it is fashion, music or dance moves, and are willing to follow them, makes us feel good because we feel like we provided great inspirations to them,”

Band leader G-Dragon, one of the top-earning artists in South Korea, said the band members were nervous at the start of the tour, but relaxed as the shows started and “were able to have fun with each performance.” The other members of the band are T.O.P, Daesung and Seungri.

According to him, the land conversion increasingly reached productive lands, either rice field, plantation or forest, while the violation of shorelines, ravines and lakes increasingly worsened. It was mentioned that his party had urged the central government to immediately approve the National Villa Standards having been designed to suppress the growth of unlicensed villas. “At the moment, there have been no clear rules governing the existence of villas so many villas are not licensed. We encourage tourism ministry to immediately issue the National Villa Business Standards,” he said. He added the rules were just waiting for an endorsement from the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy. Heavy rain, stone and gravel cover up Kubu pathway

BANGLI - Persistent rain having been flushing Bangli since the past few times, in fact, did not only cause an avalanche disaster. Along the way of Kubu village, Bangli, rocks and gravels on the roadside took onto the asphalt and covered up the road surface and were very hazardous to road users. Allegedly, such condition occurred due to less maximal function of the sewer as a drain for the runoff. Headman of Kubu, Nengah Aryo Wibowo, said on Wednesday (Jan 8) the gravel and sand covering up the road surface all this time were washed away by rainwater on to the road. Stone and gravel piled up along the road, precisely around the hamlet hall of Kubu. Such condition was recognized to be very hazardous to road users because it made the road slippery. Moreover, the pathway was the main route to Kintamani. To that end, his party with the team of Bangli Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) took action to clean up the gravel and sand. “To prevent any accident, we do cleanup action by involving village youth club aside from the BPBD,” he said. BANGLI - Apparently the legislative election next April does not only become a regular activity of the members of the Bangli Electoral Commission, but also the authority of Bali Central Mental Hospital in Bangli. The only mental hospital in Bali is now preparing additional rooms to accommodate the public suffering mental disorder including the stressed legislative candidates. Probably, there will be stressed legislative candidates who lost out in the election of this year considering the number of seats available is not comparable to the number of candidates participating in the election. Deputy Director of Services of Bali Mental Hospital, Nyoman Sukartha, said on Wednesday (Jan 8) the level of stress that led to mental disorders was estimated to be higher. Therefore, his party indirectly anticipated such condition with the addition of rooms. Of the 340 existing beds all this time, 321 beds had been occupied by patients, while his party would increase it to 400 units. Such amount would be added after the completion of the integrated building scheduled to be in operation next February. He said a number of treatment rooms would be provided in the integrated building with a variety of classes, ranging from class three, class two to class one including VIP room equipped with

various facilities such as air conditioner, spring bed, hot water, fridge and so on. Not only that, the mental hospital would also be equipped with the Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) room by setting 20 beds. However, the addition of 100 rooms was mentioned not to be solely intended for stressed candidates but also for general public who were in need of treatment for psychiatric disorder. “Obviously, we do not consider it specifically. To be sure, the addition of new building is for the public in need of treatment related to psychiatric disorders whether it is mental disorder due to legislative election or not,” he said. Nevertheless, Sukartha did not dismiss the occurrence of stress among the legislative candidates who failed to compete for legislative seat that was indeed higher at this time. Psychologically, the number of legislative candidates today was not proportional to the number of seats available. So, there would be stressed candidates who failed to be a legislator. “Psychologically, it can affect the level of stress. There are so many candidates, while the number of seat available is not comparable. So, such condition can happen,” he said. On that account, to minimize the level of stress, Sukartha expected the candidates could prepare themselves for victory and defeat in the upcoming legislative election. (ina)

DENPASAR - The ranks of Denpasar Police Criminal Detective raided a warehouse alleged to be used to illegally refill LPG cylinder, Wednesday dawn (Jan 8). The warehouse is owned by PT Paon Dewata Bali located on Jalan Cargo Taman, West Denpasar. Police arrested three employees consisting of Made Sukerta Mara, Edi Aryasa and I Gde Muiartawan. Even, the owner of warehouse or company, I Nyoman Kariasa, 41, was also led to Denpasar Police for questioning. In addition, a number of evidences were seized by police. For example, thousands of 3-kg and 12-kg gas cylinder as well as a number of tools used to refill. “The four are still intensively examined in the investigator room,” said one of the police officers last Wednesday. As information, police had long suspected the existence of the warehouse. Moreover, it was corroborated with the information if the warehouse had a wall height of 10 meters used for illegal LPG refilling. Nevertheless, police did not directly raid the location because they needed a prudence and certainty if the warehouse was used for illegal gas refilling. It was done because at glance the warehouse was always closed. Moreover, the gate was padlocked from outside. By all means, such condition obscured if there was nobody

in the warehouse, let alone refilling activity. To prove it, police conducted an investigation. Some members of mobile detective unit (buser) led by Chief Section IV of Denpasar Police Detective Criminal, Panji Ramadan, made a raid. Even, police made a ladder in order to enter and pass through the 10-meter high wall. Prior to going inside, police photographed first the activity of the three employees. After that, police went in and ambushed them. “When ambushed, they tried to escape. However, police quickly paralyzed them,” he said while asking his name to be kept secret. Being unable to move, the three employees were then taken to Denpasar Police. They claimed to have been working since two months. Such illegal refilling activities, they admitted, was instructed by the warehouse owner. “Once they were interrogated, the warehouse owner came himself to police station. The owner was also directly examined,” he told reporters last Wednesday. Based on examination to the three employees, it was obtained that four 3-kg gas cylinders were transferred into a 12-kg cylinder. The 3-kg gas cylinder was purchased at the price of IDR 15,000 and then the 12-kg gas cylinder was sold for IDR 82,000. So, the profit obtained was IDR 22,000. Meanwhile, the raid seized thousands of gas cylinders. (kmb21)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

LONDON — Colorful silk scarves tied daintily around the neck, fishnet mesh vests, big furry mohair coats — and we’re talking about menswear, not women’s. The latest men’s offerings from British luxury label Burberry Prorsum, showcased Wednesday in London, were themed “A painterly journey.” The collection’s decadent fabrics and arty prints had a feel of the English dandy and more than a hint of femininity about them. Chief designer Christopher Bailey said he was inspired by the works of British artists, including Christopher Wood and Ben Nicholson. “That kind of translated into these hand-painted bags, handpainted coats, embroideries and jacquards,” he said backstage after the show. “I wanted the collection to feel very, very rich as well.” The designer will soon also take on the role of CEO at Burberry after Angela Ahrendts announced she was leaving the brand for Apple. Although Bailey is widely admired for transforming Burberry from a fusty brand to Britain’s most powerful fashion house, there is uncertainty about how the label’s business will be affected by the change. There is no question, though, that Burberry will continue its campaign to promote itself worldwide in a big way with digital technology and social media, especially in Asian markets like China. Wednesday’s catwalk was streamed live to thousands of customers around the world through a dozen Burberry platforms, including Instagram and YouTube, and buyers could order runway looks right after the show. In line with the arty theme, prints were big and bold. Models opened the catwalk wearing scarves, shirts and sweaters featuring prints of London maps and landmarks such as St. Paul’s Cathedral. Vines and autumn leaf patterns in mustard, burgundy and hunter green dominated the second half of the show. Many of those patterns were used on heavy blanket-like scarves, draped on one shoulder as if the model just casually threw it on. The look was stylish enough, though somewhat impractical off the catwalk. Such condition causes the temporary landfill to be unable to accommodate so the rubbish spills out. According to local resident on Wednesday (Jan 8), it happened due to garbage trucks only came a few times in a week to haul the rubbish. Meanwhile, the permanent landfill building was incomparable to the volume of incoming rubbish every day.

Such condition often reaped complaints from traders and market visitors. The smell generated and the flies made them uncomfortable. Moreover, near the temporary landfill sat a row of food and drink stalls. While at night, the front courtyard of the market closely located to temporary landfill was filled with stalls for the Night Market. As seen last Wednesday, the rubbish looked to spill out of the landfill building to several meters. Additionally, the rubbish was also surrounded by a lot of flies and exuded unpleasant odor. Temporary landfill located in front of the market piled up rotting rubbish as the collection schedule was in long time. Within a week, sometimes it was only transported on Saturdays. Residents hoped the rubbish could be transported

every day or every other day so as not to accumulate and lead to unsanitary condition around the rubbish. From the data in the Education Agency, Nusa Penida is known to still lack of dozens of teachers, particularly class teacher of elementary school. Even, two elementary schools have no principal. Such condition was recognized by Wayan Ringin, the former Head of Klungkung Education Agency, Wednesday (Jan 8), who recently stepped down after official mutation, Tuesday (Jan 7). His party mentioned the shortage of teacher in Klungkung was mostly visible at the elementary level. It happened because the distribution of elementary school teacher was quite a few. Even, it reached to mountainous area in Nusa Penida subdistrict. “The most shortage occurs in Nusa Penida, namely 40 class teachers,” said Ringin after packing up to leave his office on Wednesday. It became a chore for his successor because human resources of Nusa Penida should be built starting from the character building. In general, the number of teachers at elementary level totally reached 138 principals, 242 teachers of religion, 118 physical education teachers and 978 class teachers. Of that amount, other than in Nusa Penida, a shortage of 22 teachers occurred in Dawan subdistrict. Strangely, other subdistricts such as Banjarangkan and Klungkung had excessive teachers respectively 16 and 19 teachers. As for junior high school level, there were totally 699 teachers with the

need of 489 teachers, so the surplus came to 146 teachers. However, Ringin said that Klungkung still lacked of 36 teachers on certain subjects. “For a particular subject, Klungkung indeed has had excessive teachers, while other subjects still lack of teachers,” he said. Meanwhile, similar condition also occurred to the level of high school and vocational school. Ringin said the total number reached 324 teachers. Of that amount, there was a surplus of 53 teachers of certain subjects, while still lacked 37 teachers of the other subjects. He claimed the equalization of teacher distribution remained a chore to be resolved by the Education Agency. In Nusa Penida, he said that most teachers were migrants. He hoped the remaining shortage of teacher in Nusa Penida could be filled by teachers from Nusa Penida. Though he did not claim if the migrant teachers were not optimal, at least it affected the quality of education. Aside from the matter of equitable teacher distribution, the facilities and infrastructure of school building were also considered minus. At least, it could be observed from a number of schools in Klungkung that remained to apply afternoon class. Secretary of the Klungkung Education Agency, Gusti Ketut Kaler, said last Wednesday that school conditions spreading to mountainous area as in Nusa Penida slightly complicated the agency. DENPASAR - Culprit of windshield shatter starts to wander in Denpasar area. As proof, the windshield of vehicle belonging to Ahmad Asnawi, 39, was shattered and a bag was successfully taken away. The crime occurred in front of the office of PT Semen Tonasa at Jalan Mahendradatta 234 Denpasar on Tuesday night (Jan 7). As a result of the incident, the victim claimed to suffer a loss worth IDR 10 million. A source in police station said on Wednesday (Jan 8) the windshield shattering action was taking place around 11:30 night. The victim previously parked his car at the scene. The victim working as the staff of PT Semen Tonasa was working in the office at that time. “Red Toyota Avanza vehicle with license plate DK 244 RA was parked in front of his office,” said the source. The source rejecting to mention its name explained the car windshield shattering was just known by the victim when he was out of the office. His car windshield was seen to have been shattered and a bag containing a laptop and papers vanished. Knowing this, the victim immediately reported the incident to Denpasar Police. A number of police officers went to the scene immediately. They did a crime scene investigation and examined witnesses. However, so far the culprit was not known. BEIJING - China fined acclaimed film director Zhang Yimou 7.5 million yuan ($1.24 million) on Thursday for having three children in violation of its country’s strict one-child policy. The family planning agency in the eastern city of Wuxi - where Zhang’s wife, Chen Ting, is from - told Zhang last month he would be fined, but did not say how much. Zhang appealed. Online reports surfaced last year that Zhang, who dazzled the world in 2008 with his Beijing Olympic ceremonies, had at least seven children and could be liable for a 160 million yuan ($26.3 million) fine, Xinhua news agency said. Those reports sparked a hunt for Zhang. The agency said last November they were unable to locate Zhang. In December, Zhang apologised for having three children and said he would accept any punishment. In a statement posted on the microblog account of the Binhu district’s government in Wuxi, the family planning authorities said they would give Zhang 30 days to pay up. The authorities said their calculation of the fine was based on the combined income of Zhang and Chen, which totalled 3.6 million yuan in the three years that his children were born. Zhang, 61, once the bad boy of Chinese cinema whose movies were banned at home but popular overseas, has since become a darling of the Communist Party, despite long being a subject of tabloid gossip for alleged trysts with his actresses. The government said in November that it would allow couples to have a second child if one of the parents was an only child. It was the most significant relaxation of its population control regime in nearly three decades.

Blast at Japan chemical plant kills 5, injures 17 Associated Press Writer

TOKYO — An explosion at a chemical factory in central Japan on Thursday killed at least five workers and injured 17 others, authorities said. Investigators suspect chemical reaction involving hydrogen caused the blast at metal and chemical company Mitsubishi Materials Corp.’s Yokkaichi plant, about 350 kilometers (220 miles) west of Tokyo. The blast appeared to have occurred when plant workers were rinsing heat exchange equipment at the silicone plant during maintenance, according to a Mie prefectural police official, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to department rules. Police said five workers died. Fire department officials said that 17 people were taken to hospitals.The dead and injured were all believed to be workers at the factory.

INDONESIA Three Nepalese deported from Indonesia JAYAPURA - The Immigration Office of the eastern Indonesian city of Jayapura in Papua province deported three Nepalese nationals on Thursday, stated spokesman Soenaryono. “We have deported three immigrants from Nepal who allegedly wanted to seek asylum in Australia. They left Jayapura for Jakarta, on the Batik Air plane, at 8 a.m. this morning,” noted Soenaryono on Thursday. He explained that the three Nepalese nationals, identified as Prashain Prabhakar (19), Thapa Chhetri Rabindra (37) and Khadka Kama Kumar (30), were held on December 30, 2013 when they were about to have their visas extended at the Jayapura Immigration Office. Soenaryono informed that they had told the immigration authorities that they wanted to make their way to Australia from Merauke on a motor boat, but had to get their visas extended

in Jayapura before that. “However, we have now deported them to Jakarta from where they will be flown to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and then to their country of origin, Nepal,” he noted. Meanwhile, the immigration authorities in Batam, Riau Islands Province, deported 121 foreign nationals on various charges, last year. “Most of the deportees were from Malaysia, Singapore and Myanmar,” Head of the Batam Immigration Office Yudi Kurniadi stated in Batam recently. He added that 36 foreign nationals were deported after their stay permits had expired, and 40 were deported after being caught for illegal fishing in the Indone-

sian waters. Four of the deportees were involved in smuggling activities, while 26 others had abused their stay permits, he noted. Sixteen foreign nationals were deported after completing their respective jail terms for various criminal offenses, he remarked. “We need around two million absorption wells, as against the 1,900 wells that we are constructing currently,” he pointed out, here on Thursday. The absorption wells have been working well so far and have helped reduce flooding in the locations where they exist, he added. Jakarta has around 884 sewers and small rivers, and only 160 of them have been cleaned up, he stated. When Jakarta was hit by heavy rains on Wednesday (Jan. 8), 19 locations were flooded. The flooded areas in Central Jakarta included Kramat Jaya and Percetakan Negara; in South Jakarta: Ciledug Raya, Pasar Minggu, and Fatmawati streets; in North Jakarta: Mangga Dua Raya, Pluit Raya, TNI AL (Navy) Dewaruci complex, Kramat Jaya, and Pangeran Jayakarta streets; in West Jakarta: Daan Mogot, Kapuk-Kamal, Kapuk Raya and part of Grogol Toll road.

SURABAYA - A young African lion has died after getting its head caught in cables in its cage at a zoo notorious for hundreds of animal deaths in recent years, it was announced Thursday. The 18-month-old lion named Michael was found early Tuesday at the zoo in Surabaya, in the east of the main island of Java, said zoo spokesman Agus Supangkat. “The lion was found hanging from the roof of his cage. He was very young and got his head stuck in cables that keepers use to open and close the cage,” Supangkat told AFP. Supangkat insisted that the death was an accident and not due to negligence. Police were investigating its death, he added. The incident came just two days after a wildebeest was found dead in its cage at the zoo, which has been dubbed the “death zoo” because so

many animals have died there prematurely in recent years due to neglect. Among them have been endangered orangutans, a tiger whose food was laced with formaldehyde and a giraffe found dead with a beachballsized lump of plastic in its stomach, after eating food wrappers thrown into its pen over the years. The wildebeest died on Sunday evening of intestinal complications. Supangkat insisted the wildebeest had been properly fed and said it became sick after days of intense rain and humidity. The management of the zoo -- Indonesia’s biggest -- has been taken over by the Surabaya city administration, but the deaths have not stopped and animal welfare groups continue to call for its closure. African lions are found in most countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The International Union for Conservation of Nature classifies them as vulnerable.

Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld is angry that his team must play a World Cup match “in the middle of the jungle” and has described the scheduling as of the tournament in Brazil as “almost irresponsible.” The Swiss will face Honduras in their final Group E game in Manaus, located in the heart of the Amazon rain forest, and also play France in Salvador, another tropical venue on the coast. Serie A strugglers Bologna have named much-travelled Davide Ballardini as their coach as they attempt to pull away from the relegation zone. The 50-year-old has replaced Stefano Poli, who was fired on Tuesday after two years and three months at the helm, the club said in a statement on their website (http://www.bolognafc.it) on Wednesday. Ballardini, who was given a contract until the end of the season, has had three stints at Cagliari, two at Genoa and also coached Lazio, Palermo, Pescara and lower league Sambenedettese in his 10-year career. The family planning agency in the eastern city of Wuxi - where Zhang’s wife, Chen Ting, is from - told Zhang last month he would be fined, but did not say how much. Zhang appealed. Online reports surfaced last year that Zhang, who dazzled the world in 2008 with his Beijing Olympic ceremonies, had at least seven children and could be liable for a 160 million yuan ($26.3 million) fine, Xinhua news agency said. Those reports sparked a hunt for Zhang. The agency said last November they were unable to locate Zhang. In December, Zhang apologised for having three children and said he would accept any punishment. In a statement posted on the microblog account of the Binhu district’s government in Wuxi, the family planning authorities said they would give Zhang 30 days to pay up. The authorities said their calculation of the fine was based on the combined income of Zhang and Chen, which totalled 3.6 million yuan in the three years that his children were born. Blast at Japan chemical plant kills 5, injures 17 Associated Press Writer

TOKYO — An explosion at a chemical factory in central Japan on Thursday killed at least five workers and injured 17 others, authorities said. Investigators suspect chemical reaction involving hydrogen caused the blast at metal and chemical company Mitsubishi Materials Corp.’s Yokkaichi plant, about 350 kilometers (220 miles) west of Tokyo. The blast appeared to have occurred when plant workers were rinsing heat exchange equipment at the silicone plant during maintenance, according to a Mie prefectural police official, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to department rules. Police said five workers died. Fire department officials said that 17 people were taken to hospitals.The dead and injured were all believed to be workers at the factory.

INDONESIA Three Nepalese deported from Indonesia JAYAPURA - The Immigration Office of the eastern Indonesian city of Jayapura in Papua province deported three Nepalese nationals on Thursday, stated spokesman Soenaryono. “We have deported three immigrants from Nepal who allegedly wanted to seek asylum in Australia. They left Jayapura for Jakarta, on the Batik Air plane, at 8 a.m. this morning,” noted Soenaryono on Thursday. He explained that the three Nepalese nationals, identified as Prashain Prabhakar (19), Thapa Chhetri Rabindra (37) and Khadka Kama Kumar (30), were held on December 30, 2013 when they were about to have their visas extended at the Jayapura Immigration Office. Soenaryono informed that they had told the immigration authorities that they wanted to make their way to Australia from Merauke on a motor boat, but had to get their visas extended

in Jayapura before that. “However, we have now deported them to Jakarta from where they will be flown to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and then to their country of origin, Nepal,” he noted. Meanwhile, the immigration authorities in Batam, Riau Islands Province, deported 121 foreign nationals on various charges, last year. “Most of the deportees were from Malaysia, Singapore and Myanmar,” Head of the Batam Immigration Office Yudi Kurniadi stated in Batam recently. SURABAYA - A young African lion has died after getting its head caught in cables in its cage at a zoo notorious for hundreds of animal deaths in recent years, it was announced Thursday. The 18-month-old lion named Michael was found early Tuesday at the zoo in Surabaya, in the east of the main island of Java, said zoo spokesman Agus Supangkat. “The lion was found hanging from the roof of his cage. He was very young and got his head stuck in cables that keepers use to open and close the cage,” Supangkat told AFP. Supangkat insisted that the death was an accident and not due to negligence. Police were investigating its death, he added. The incident came just two days after a wildebeest was found dead in its cage at the zoo, which has been dubbed the “death zoo” because so

many animals have died there prematurely in recent years due to neglect. Among them have been endangered orangutans, a tiger whose food was laced with formaldehyde and a giraffe found dead with a beachballsized lump of plastic in its stomach, after eating food wrappers thrown into its pen over the years. The wildebeest died on Sunday evening of intestinal complications. Supangkat insisted the wildebeest had been properly fed and said it became sick after days of intense rain and humidity. The management of the zoo -- Indonesia’s biggest -- has been taken over by the Surabaya city administration, but the deaths have not stopped and animal welfare groups continue to call for its closure. African lions are found in most countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The International Union for Conservation of Nature classifies them as vulnerable.

SYDNEY - Australian carrier Qantas said it was facing some of its toughest-ever challenges on Thursday as Moody’s downgraded its credit rating to junk, with the airline battling intense competition and spiralling costs. Moody’s cited “a sharp deterioration in the company’s core domestic business” following the airline’s shock profit warning and announcement of job cuts in December, which had already prompted Standard and Poor’s to assign it junk status. Qantas is now rated Ba2 by Moody’s and BB+ by Standard and Poor’s, meaning it is considered a “junk” product by professional investors. It will increase the cost of financing for the carrier and restrict access for investors that do not put their money in lower-rated companies, deepening woes for the cash-strapped airline. “They are in a complete freeze, worrying about paying interest rather than spending capex on where it should be going -- a new fleet, upgrading facilities, etc,” said IG Markets analyst Evan Lucas. The downgrades follow a dire forecast in December of a half-year loss of up to Aus$300 million (US$267 million) and the decision to axe 1,000 jobs due to “immense” cost pressures. Qantas chief financial officer Gareth Evans said the news was not unexpected and underscored the difficulties faced by the company, which include record fuel costs and fierce competition from domestic rival Virgin Australia. Such condition causes the temporary landfill to be unable to accommodate so the rubbish spills out. According to local resident on Wednesday (Jan 8), it happened due to garbage trucks only came a few times in a week to haul the rubbish. Meanwhile, the permanent landfill building was incomparable to the volume of incoming rubbish every day.

Such condition often reaped complaints from traders and market visitors. The smell generated and the flies made them uncomfortable. Moreover, near the temporary landfill sat a row of food and drink stalls. While at night, the front courtyard of the market closely located to temporary landfill was filled with stalls for the Night Market. As seen last Wednesday, the rubbish looked to spill out of the landfill building to several meters. Additionally, the rubbish was also surrounded by a lot of flies and exuded unpleasant odor. Temporary landfill located in front of the market piled up rotting rubbish as the collection schedule was in long time. Within a week, sometimes it was only transported on Saturdays. Residents hoped the rubbish could be transported

Nyoman Kecip, 65, said the rubbish was rarely taken because, according to information, there was restricted budget to transport the rubbish. From the data in the Education Agency, Nusa Penida is known to still lack of dozens of teachers, particularly class teacher of elementary school. Even, two elementary schools have no principal. Such condition was recognized by Wayan Ringin, the former Head of Klungkung Education Agency, Wednesday (Jan 8), who recently stepped down after official mutation, Tuesday (Jan 7). His party mentioned the shortage of teacher in Klungkung was mostly visible at the elementary level. It happened because the distribution of elementary school teacher was quite a few. Even, it reached to mountainous area in Nusa Penida subdistrict. “The most shortage occurs in Nusa Penida, namely 40 class teachers,” said Ringin after packing up to leave his office on Wednesday. In general, the number of teachers at elementary level totally reached 138 principals, 242 teachers of religion, 118 physical education teachers and 978 class teachers. Strangely, other subdistricts such as Banjarangkan and Klungkung had excessive teachers respectively 16 and 19 teachers. As for junior high school level, there were totally 699 teachers with the

need of 489 teachers, so the surplus came to 146 teachers. However, Ringin said that Klungkung still lacked of 36 teachers on certain subjects. “For a particular subject, Klungkung indeed has had excessive teachers, while other subjects still lack of teachers,” he said. Meanwhile, similar condition also occurred to the level of high school and vocational school. Ringin said the total number reached 324 teachers. Of that amount, there was a surplus of 53 teachers of certain subjects, while still lacked 37 teachers of the other subjects. He claimed the equalization of teacher distribution remained a chore to be resolved by the Education Agency. In Nusa Penida, he said that most teachers were migrants. He hoped the remaining shortage of teacher in Nusa Penida could be filled by teachers from Nusa Penida. Though he did not claim if the migrant teachers were not optimal, at least it affected the quality of education. Aside from the matter of equitable teacher distribution, the facilities and infrastructure of school building were also considered minus. At least, it could be observed from a number of schools in Klungkung that remained to apply afternoon class. It had been a very stressful day. Some of my teammates were leaving because of pressure from their families and business associates. My dreams of basketball diplomacy was quickly falling apart. I had been drinking. It’s not an excuse but by the time the interview happened I was upset. I was overwhelmed. It’s not an excuse, it’s just the truth. “I want to first apologize to Kenneth Bae’s family. I want to apologize to my teammates and my management team. I also want to apologize to Chris Cuomo. I embarrassed a lot of people. I’m very sorry. At this point I should know better than to make political statements. I’m truly sorry.” Rodman has been slammed for not using his influence with Kim to help free Bae, the missionary in poor health who is being confined in the North for “anti-state” crimes. DENPASAR - Culprit of windshield shatter starts to wander in Denpasar area. As proof, the windshield of vehicle belonging to Ahmad Asnawi, 39, was shattered and a bag was successfully taken away. The crime occurred in front of the office of PT Semen Tonasa at Jalan Mahendradatta 234 Denpasar on Tuesday night (Jan 7). As a result of the incident, the victim claimed to suffer a loss worth IDR 10 million. A source in police station said on Wednesday (Jan 8) the windshield shattering action was taking place around 11:30 night. The victim previously parked his car at the scene. The victim working as the staff of PT Semen Tonasa was working in the office at that time. “Red Toyota Avanza vehicle with license plate DK 244 RA was parked in front of his office,” said the source. The source rejecting to mention its name explained the car windshield shattering was just known by the victim when he was out of the office. His car windshield was seen to have been shattered and a bag containing a laptop and papers vanished. Knowing this, the victim immediately reported the incident to Denpasar Police. A number of police officers went to the scene immediately. They did a crime scene investigation and examined witnesses. However, so far the culprit was not known. Spokesperson of Denpasar Police, IB Sarjana, when asked for his confirmation last Wednesday claimed to have received the report. The latest men’s offerings from British luxury label Burberry Prorsum, showcased Wednesday in London, were themed “A painterly journey.” The collection’s decadent fabrics and arty prints had a feel of the English dandy and more than a hint of femininity about them. Chief designer Christopher Bailey said he was inspired by the works of British artists, including Christopher Wood and Ben Nicholson. “That kind of translated into these hand-painted bags, handpainted coats, embroideries and jacquards,” he said backstage after the show. “I wanted the collection to feel very, very rich as well.” The designer will soon also take on the role of CEO at Burberry after Angela Ahrendts announced she was leaving the brand for Apple. Although Bailey is widely admired for transforming Burberry from a fusty brand to Britain’s most powerful fashion house, there is uncertainty about how the label’s business will be affected by the change. There is no question, though, that Burberry will continue its campaign to promote itself worldwide in a big way with digital technology and social media, especially in Asian markets like China. Wednesday’s catwalk was streamed live to thousands of customers around the world through a dozen Burberry platforms, including Instagram and YouTube, and buyers could order runway looks right after the show. In line with the arty theme, prints were big and bold. Models opened the catwalk wearing scarves, shirts and sweaters featuring prints of London maps and landmarks such as St. Paul’s Cathedral. Heavy rain, stone and gravel cover up Kubu pathway

BANGLI - Persistent rain having been flushing Bangli since the past few times, in fact, did not only cause an avalanche disaster. Along the way of Kubu village, Bangli, rocks and gravels on the roadside took onto the asphalt and covered up the road surface and were very hazardous to road users. Allegedly, such condition occurred due to less maximal function of the sewer as a drain for the runoff. Headman of Kubu, Nengah Aryo Wibowo, said on Wednesday (Jan 8) the gravel and sand covering up the road surface all this time were washed away by rainwater on to the road. Stone and gravel piled up along the road, precisely around the hamlet hall of Kubu. Such condition was recognized to be very hazardous to road users because it made the road slippery. Moreover, the pathway was the main route to Kintamani. To that end, his party with the team of Bangli Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) took action to clean up the gravel and sand. “To prevent any accident, we do cleanup action by involving village youth club aside from the BPBD,” he said. BANGLI - Apparently the legislative election next April does not only become a regular activity of the members of the Bangli Electoral Commission, but also the authority of Bali Central Mental Hospital in Bangli. The only mental hospital in Bali is now preparing additional rooms to accommodate the public suffering mental disorder including the stressed legislative candidates. Probably, there will be stressed legislative candidates who lost out in the election of this year considering the number of seats available is not comparable to the number of candidates participating in the election. Deputy Director of Services of Bali Mental Hospital, Nyoman Sukartha, said on Wednesday (Jan 8) the level of stress that led to mental disorders was estimated to be higher. Therefore, his party indirectly anticipated such condition with the addition of rooms. Of the 340 existing beds all this time, 321 beds had been occupied by patients, while his party would increase it to 400 units. Such amount would be added after the completion of the integrated building scheduled to be in operation next February. He said a number of treatment rooms would be provided in the integrated building with a variety of classes, ranging from class three, class two to class one including VIP room equipped with

various facilities such as air conditioner, spring bed, hot water, fridge and so on. Not only that, the mental hospital would also be equipped with the Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) room by setting 20 beds. However, the addition of 100 rooms was mentioned not to be solely intended for stressed candidates but also for general public who were in need of treatment for psychiatric disorder. “Obviously, we do not consider it specifically. To be sure, the addition of new building is for the public in need of treatment related to psychiatric disorders whether it is mental disorder due to legislative election or not,” he said. Nevertheless, Sukartha did not dismiss the occurrence of stress among the legislative candidates who failed to compete for legislative seat that was indeed higher at this time. Psychologically, the number of legislative candidates today was not proportional to the number of seats available. So, there would be stressed candidates who failed to be a legislator. “Psychologically, it can affect the level of stress. There are so many candidates, while the number of seat available is not comparable. So, such condition can happen,” he said. On that account, to minimize the level of stress, Sukartha expected the candidates could prepare themselves for victory and defeat in the upcoming legislative election. (ina)

DENPASAR - The ranks of Denpasar Police Criminal Detective raided a warehouse alleged to be used to illegally refill LPG cylinder, Wednesday dawn (Jan 8). The warehouse is owned by PT Paon Dewata Bali located on Jalan Cargo Taman, West Denpasar. Police arrested three employees consisting of Made Sukerta Mara, Edi Aryasa and I Gde Muiartawan. Even, the owner of warehouse or company, I Nyoman Kariasa, 41, was also led to Denpasar Police for questioning. In addition, a number of evidences were seized by police. For example, thousands of 3-kg and 12-kg gas cylinder as well as a number of tools used to refill. “The four are still intensively examined in the investigator room,” said one of the police officers last Wednesday. As information, police had long suspected the existence of the warehouse. Moreover, it was corroborated with the information if the warehouse had a wall height of 10 meters used for illegal LPG refilling. Nevertheless, police did not directly raid the location because they needed a prudence and certainty if the warehouse was used for illegal gas refilling. It was done because at glance the warehouse was always closed. Moreover, the gate was padlocked from outside. By all means, such condition obscured if there was nobody

in the warehouse, let alone refilling activity. To prove it, police conducted an investigation. Some members of mobile detective unit (buser) led by Chief Section IV of Denpasar Police Detective Criminal, Panji Ramadan, made a raid. Even, police made a ladder in order to enter and pass through the 10-meter high wall. Prior to going inside, police photographed first the activity of the three employees. After that, police went in and ambushed them. “When ambushed, they tried to escape. However, police quickly paralyzed them,” he said while asking his name to be kept secret. Being unable to move, the three employees were then taken to Denpasar Police. They claimed to have been working since two months. Such illegal refilling activities, they admitted, was instructed by the warehouse owner. “Once they were interrogated, the warehouse owner came himself to police station. The owner was also directly examined,” he told reporters last Wednesday. Based on examination to the three employees, it was obtained that four 3-kg gas cylinders were transferred into a 12-kg cylinder. The 3-kg gas cylinder was purchased at the price of IDR 15,000 and then the 12-kg gas cylinder was sold for IDR 82,000. So, the profit obtained was IDR 22,000. Meanwhile, the raid seized thousands of gas cylinders. (kmb21)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

fell when compared to the year 2012. “If this condition persists, it will kindle a price war excluding the additional hotel development, especially in Southern Bali and the moratorium plan is only a discourse. Its zoning is unclear,” he said. According to him, the land conversion increasingly reached productive lands, either rice field, plantation or forest, while the violation of shorelines, ravines and lakes increasingly worsened. The environmental damage proliferated and the island of Bali had been getting pockmarked. Chairman of the Bali Villa Association, Jero Mangku Wayan Suteja, also admitted that competition of villas in Bali was increasingly difficult due to the proliferation of villas in Bali, especially in the areas favored by many tourists such as Badung and Gianyar. Even, the average annual growth reached 10 percent.

“Competition will be getting more intense because every year the growth of villa tends to increase. Among the very rapid growth of the villa, the most rampantly seen is in Badung and Ubud area,” he said. It was mentioned the number of villa in Bali reached more than1,200 villas where 700 villas were located in Badung, while the rest scattered in Tabanan, Buleleng, Klungkung, Gianyar and other regions. “The unlicensed is more than 10 percent,” he said. It was mentioned that his party had urged the central government to immediately approve the National Villa Standards having been designed to suppress the growth of unlicensed villas. “At the moment, there have been no clear rules governing the existence of villas so many villas are not licensed. We encourage tourism ministry to immediately issue the National Villa Business Standards,” he said. He added the rules were just waiting for an endorsement from the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy.
