WASHINGTON — Heralded as a musical genius who rose from a British shipyard hometown to make his mark, Sting was receiving America’s highest honor Sunday for influencing culture through the arts. Top performers and power players from Hollywood, Broadway and Washington gathered to honor five artists receiving this year’s Kennedy Center Honors. Tom Hanks, Lily Tomlin, singer Al Green and ballerina Patricia McBride were joining Sting in receiving the arts prize. Sting broke out in 1978 with his band The Police with such hits as “Roxanne” and later “Every Breath You Take” before starting his solo career. He has been performing for four decades and has won 16 Grammy Awards. Bruce Springsteen, who offered a toast for Sting at a State Department dinner Saturday, said the breadth and depth of Sting’s talents are intimidating as he crosses from folk music to jazz, classical, pop, rock and reggae. On Tuesday, Sting will join the Broadway cast of “The Last Ship,” his musical about his hometown. “Sting makes me feel like a musical Neanderthal. When we get together, we always have the same argument. He insists that there are more than three chords, while I insist that there are not,” Springsteen said. “In an age of musical homogenization, no one has ever sounded or sang like my friend.” Sting, 63, told The Associated Press he was bewildered by the honor. “You know, for an Englishman to receive this reward, it’s not unique, but it’s rare, and I take that pretty seriously,” he said. LOS ANGELES — “Boyhood” is on a roll. The Los Angeles Film Critics Association named Richard Linklater’s 12-year experiment their best picture of 2014 on Sunday. Linklater also earned a best director honor for his film, while Patricia Arquette picked up best actress. Julianne Moore, who is largely considered an Oscar front runner for her portrayal of an Alzheimer’s patient in “Still Alice,” was awarded runner-up in that category. In the past week, “Boyhood” has become the consensus choice for critics groups. The Boston Society of Film Critics, the New York Film Critics Circle, and the New York Film Critics online have all picked chosen the film as the year’s best. The only outlier is the National Board of Review, which gave that prize to “A Most Violent Year.” The LA Film Critics Awards often overlap with eventual Oscar nominees, and sometimes winners, but are also known for some quirky choices. Just

take best actor recipient Tom Hardy, whose nearly solo performance in the little-seen thriller “Locke” earned him critical raves, but is notably absent from any serious awards conversation. J.K. Simmons, who is very much in the Oscar conversation, was awarded with best supporting actor for his portrayal of a sadistic jazz instructor in the indie “Whiplash.” Beyond “Boyhood’s” four wins, including film editing, only two other films were multi-honorees: The Polish drama “Ida” which won best foreign language film and best supporting actress for Agata Kulesza, and Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel” for screenplay and production design. The Edward Snowden film “Citizenfour” picked up best documentary, with Steve James’s ode to Roger Ebert “Life Itself” taking runner-up. Both films are on the shortlist for Oscar consideration. Studio Ghibli’s fantasy “The Tale of Princess Kaguya” won for best animation. “The Lego Movie” was the runner-up. Awards mainstays such as “Wild,” ‘’The Theory of Everything” and “The Imitation Game” were shut out. The Martin Luther King, Jr. film “Selma,” narrowly missed that distinction, as director Ava DuVernay was given the New Generation award. Gena Rowlands was previously announced as the career achievement award recipient. Awards will be handed out at the 40th annual Los Angeles Film Critics Association ceremony on Jan. 10.

NEGARA - Construction activity carried out in the paddy field on the waterfront of Yehsumbul is alleged to be illegal. Aside from alleged to have infringed coastal borderline, it has also converted productive agricultural land. As information from local workers, the wetland area would be used to establish a villa. The owner is a foreign national living in Jakarta. Currently the development in the south of the State Muslim Elementary School (MIN) at Yehsumbul, Mendoyo, merely made a parapet surrounding the land. Some workers looked to build a fence, Sunday morning (Dec 7). When asked, they justified if the land would be used to build a villa and the owner was foreigner. Distance of the foundation wall was very close to the shoreline of Yehsumbul. One of workers, Bujahri, 48, from Madura, said that he was working on the fence

for the villa development. The land overlooking the beach, according to him, spread across four hectares. He claimed to be paid daily at IDR 70,000, but did not know for sure who the land owner was. Some people claimed to be surprised at the construction amidst the growing issue on land conversion. They hoped that relevant authorities could check the waterfront development so that it would be clear whether it had been licensed or not. Headman of Yehsumbul, Komang Dentra, when asked for his confirmation via telephone could not be contacted. On the other hand, the Head of Jembrana Municipal Police, IGN Rai Budi, claimed to have not received any reports regarding the development on the edge of the beach. AMLAPURA - Following heavy rains flushing Karangasem from Sunday morning, the Selat and Rendang subdistrict were struck down by landslide disaster. As a result of the incident, the road access of Selat subdistrict to Rendang subdistrict was disconnected. A total of 14 personnel of the Karangasem Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) came down to location to clean up the avalanche materials from the road body. Chief Executive of the BPBD Karangasem, Ida Bagus Ketut Arimbawa, revealed that there were five points of landslides occurred in Selat and Rendang subdistrict. Precisely, three points were located at Muncan village and two other points at Batusesa village, Rendang. Such incident caused the road access passing through the border of the two subdistricts to get disconnected. Ketut Arimbawa explained that a total of 14 personnel were deployed to open the road access at that location. His party claimed to give priority for the cleanup of avalanche so that the queue of vehicles

could move. “Temporarily, we clean up the avalanche materials on the road body. The other materials will be removed on Monday,” he said on the sidelines of cleaning the avalanche, Sunday (Dec 7). Separately, the Headman of Amerta Bhuana, Selat, I Wayan Suara Arsana, revealed the landslides at the border of Muncan village occurred around 5:30 p.m. Due to the landslides, the vehicles that would pass Rendang-Selat road section should reversed to the direction of Klungkung County. His party admitted if the location indeed had many cliffs

with unstable soil conditions. As in previous years, every heavy rain was always followed by avalanche. To that end, his party hoped the BPBD Karangasem to alert heavy equipment so that landslides could be addressed immediately. Apart from landslides at the five points, a 15-meter tree also tumbled at Jasri village, precisely in the area of Sampiang near the statue of cow. Fortunately, the fallen tree did not tumble over the passing vehicles. Having been evacuated for 40 minutes, the tree hampering the traffic could finally be removed. (dwa)

DENPASAR - The results of analysis and evaluation on the narcotic crime committed during November 2014 made by the Denpasar Police Narcotics Unit indicated that drug dealers operating in Bali are dominated by migrants. Approximately the amount to 61.53 percent, while the number of Balinese people getting involved in the illicit business reached about 38.47 percent. “The migrants getting involved in drug cases are from Java, Sunda, Sulawesi and Sumatra. They are mostly unemployed and workers in private sector,” said the Chief of Denpasar Police Narcotics Unit, Gede Ganefo, Sunday (Dec 7). Since most drug traffickers came from outside Bali, the location of transaction and arrest were mostly carried out at boarding house. Those migrants predominantly stayed at boarding house because the price of land and homes in Bali was very high. Besides, such condition enabled them to play cat-and-mouse with law enforcement officers. “Based on the results of our analysis and evaluation for November 2014, the scene at boarding house reached 51.85 percent, while at public roads or parking lot reached 13 percent. In the past, the offenders mostly made transaction at nightclubs, but now it has shifted to

boarding house,” said the former Chief of South Denpasar Police. In terms of the time of transaction, this officer from Buleleng revealed that most transactions were made between 10:00 p.m. to 02:00 a.m. with the percentage of approximately 40.74 percent. During the day, it was made between 02:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. “These are hours prone to transactions. We expect people to always be vigilant and observe the surrounding environment. Do not let people use the neighborhood as a place of transaction and it will be stigmatized to be bad by Balinese people. Moreover, ahead of the New Year, the possibility of smuggling will be greater,” said Ganefo. The rampant drug trafficking in Bali, especially in Denpasar and Badung, is proved by the fact that many perpetrators could have been arrested. Each week, the personnel of Gede Ganefo could arrest averagely 6 dealers or users of the illicit goods, not to mention the arrests made by the other county police. “We cannot work alone in the fight against drug abuse in Bali. The key lies in the community. Thus, we should jointly struggle to prevent the drug circulation in our neighborhood. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

NASA craft to probe Pluto after nine-year journey

WASHINGTON - An American probe that will explore Pluto woke up from its slumber Saturday, after a nine-year journey to take a close look at the distant body for the first time. “New Horizons is healthy and cruising quietly through deep space, nearly three billion miles from home, but its rest is nearly over,” said Alice Bowman, the craft’s operations manager at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory outside Washington. The probe came out of hibernation and transmitted a message to Earth. New Horizons was launched in

January 2006 and was in hibernation for 1,873 days, about two thirds of its journey, to preserve the craft’s electric power and minimize resources needed to monitor it. During its trip, NASA engineers woke the craft every few months to check if its systems were still functioning. The craft’s computer has also been sending a weekly message to Earth that travels four hours to get here. It aims to study Pluto, an icy

body with several moons near the outer reaches of our solar system. New Horizons begins its exploration of Pluto in January at a distance of about 260 million kilometers (160 million miles) from the body. The probe will pass closest to Pluto, which travels on an elliptical orbit, in July, just before it ends its research. During its mission, New Horizons will collect data on Pluto’s topography and its largest moon

Charon, giving astronomers an up-close look at the dim surfaces that are difficult to see from Earth. The craft carries onboard seven instruments including infrared and ultraviolet spectrometers, a multicolor camera, a high-resolution telescopic camera and a space dust detector. All of the instruments aboard New Horizons draw power from a radioisotope thermoelectric generator, which provides less power than a pair of 100-watt light bulbs, scientists said. After New Horizons finishes its six-month investigation of Pluto, it will pass near other objects in the Kuiper Belt, a vast ring of debris

left over from the solar system’s birth 4.6 billion years ago. Scientists identified three possible objects in the Kuiper Belt, about 1.5 billion kilometers from Pluto, that New Horizons could also investigate. Pluto is about 2,300 kilometers in diameter, smaller than Earth’s moon, and has a mass about 500 times less than Earth. Pluto and its five moons circle the sun every 247.7 years. In 2006, the International Astronomical Union withdrew Pluto’s status as a planet given its small size, reclassifying it as a dwarf planet and leaving the solar system with eight planets.

It’s gotten hotter, more polluted with heat-trapping gases, more crowded and just downright wilder. The numbers are stark. Carbon dioxide emissions: up 60 percent. Global temperature: up six-tenths of a degree Fahrenheit. Population: up 1.7 billion people. Sea level: up 3 inches (7.5 centimeters). U.S. extreme weather: up 30 percent. Ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica: down 4.9 trillion tons of ice. “Simply put, we are rapidly remaking the planet and beginning to suffer the consequences,” says Michael Oppenheimer, professor of geosciences and international affairs at Princeton University. Diplomats from more than 190 nations opened talks Monday at a United Nations global warming conference in Lima, Peru, to pave the way for an international treaty they hope to forge next year.

Since 1992, there have been more than 6,600 climate, weather and water major disasters worldwide, causing more than $1.6 trillion in damage and killing more than 600,000 people. From 1983 to 1992 the world averaged 147 climate, water and weather disasters each year. Over the past 10 years, that number has jumped to an average 306 a year. In the United States, an index of climate extremes — hot and cold, wet and dry — kept by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has jumped 30 percent from 1992 to 2013, not counting hurricanes, based on 10-year averages. LEGAZPI, Philippines — Typhoon Hagupit weakened into a tropical storm Monday, leaving at least 21 people dead and forcing more than a million people into shelters but sparing most of a central Philippine region still haunted by last year’s monster storm. While the worst was over in central island provinces, where the sun peeked Monday after days of stormy weather, Manila and outlying provinces braced as Hagupit, or “smash” in Filipino, blew nearer with maximum sustained winds of 105 kilometers (65 miles) per hour and gusts of 135 kph (84 mph). Forecasters said the storm was expected to slam into a Batangas provincial town about 110 kilometers (68 miles) south of Manila by nightfall. Although considerably weaker from its peak power, the storm remains potentially dangerous and could still whip storm surges that could overwhelm coastal villages, they said. While officials expressed relief that the typhoon had not caused major damage, they warned that Hagupit was still on course to barrel into the southern tip of the main northern island of Luzon where Manila is located, before starting to blow away Tuesday into the South China Sea.

Hagupit (pronounced HA’-goopit), which made landfall in Eastern Samar late Saturday, was moving slowly at 10 kph (6 mph) and could dump heavy rain that could possibly trigger landslides and flash floods, according to forecasters. Traumatized by the death and destruction from Typhoon Haiyan last year, more than 1 million people fled to emergency shelters and safer ground. Many have started to troop back home after the typhoon had blown past their provinces, Philippine Red Cross Secretary-General Gwendolyn Pang said. “The worst is over for them. It’s a big relief because they really got scared of this typhoon with Haiyan in their minds,” Pang said. “And there are still areas bracing for the storm like Manila.” Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada said more than 5,000 residents of a shantytown on the edge of Manila Bay have been evacuated due to possible storm

surges. “We’ve prepared and trained for this,” Estrada told The Associated Press, adding his greatest fear was widespread flooding. Metropolitan Manila has a population of more than 12 million people. Like villagers in the central Philippines, Estrada said Manila residents were readily moving to safety because of haunting memories of Haiyan. The strongest typhoon on record to hit land, Haiyan’s tsunami-like storm surges, leveled entire villages and left more than 7,300 people dead or missing in November last year. Hagupit left at least 21 people dead, including 16 villagers who drowned in Eastern Samar province, where the typhoon made its first landfall, according to the Philippine Red Cross. The government disasterresponse agency has reported only five deaths, including three people who died of hypothermia, saying it was still verifying other reported casualties.

BEIJING — A Chinese court on Monday sentenced eight people to death for involvement in two attacks that left 46 people dead in the far western region of Xinjiang, state broadcaster China Central Television said. The Urumqi Intermediate People’s Court in the capital of Xinjiang also handed out suspended death sentences to five others, CCTV said. On April 30, as Chinese President Xi Jinping was wrapping up a tour to the ethnic region, an explosion shook the Urumqi train station, killing three people, including two attackers. About three weeks later, on May 22, four men drove two SUVs through a crowded market in central Urumqi and tossed explosives out of car windows, killing themselves and 39 others.

Following the attacks, authorities launched a one-year crackdown on violence in Xinjiang, home to the Muslim, Turkic-speaking Uighur minority. Beijing has blamed the violence on radical separatists. Critics and human rights advocates say Uighurs have chafed under the repressive rule of the Han Chinese-dominated government. Uighurs also complain of economic disenfranchisement with the inflow of Han Chinese to their homeland, although Beijing says it is pumping investments into the region to help it grow. Since the attacks, Beijing has agreed to provide free high school education in southern Xinjiang, which has the highest concentration of Uighurs, and promised employment for at least one member of each household.

Sirisena has accused Rajapaksa of misusing his all-powerful presidency, and has vowed to abolish the president’s executive powers, and strengthen the Parliament and judiciary if he is elected. “I will be committed to bring about the changes the country needs,” Sirisena said. “It is clear that we will achieve a magnificent victory. With that we will wipe out family rule, strengthen freedom and democracy and build up a country free of corruption and fear.”

INDONESIA Former maid tells court of ‘torture’ by employer Agence France-Presse

HONG KONG - A former Indonesian maid on Monday told a court that she was starved, beaten and ritually humiliated by her Hong Kong employer in a case that sparked international outrage. Erwiana Sulistyaningsih described in vivid detail how for months on end she lived on nothing but bread and rice, slept only four hours a day and was beaten so badly by her former employer Law Wan-tung that she was knocked unconscious. “I was tortured,” she told the packed courtroom through a translator on the opening day of Law’s trial. “She often hit me... sometimes she would hit me from behind, sometimes she hit me in the front. I was hit so often sometimes I got a headache... She hit me in my mouth (so) I had difficulty breathing.” Sulistyaningsih’s case has shone a spotlight on the plight of Hong Kong’s nearly 300,000 domestic workers, drawing angry crowds onto the streets in May to protest for better working conditions. Opening the prosecution, solicitor Louisa Lai detailed the harrowing litany of abuse the former maid allegedly suffered, including how she was told to wrap her sores-covered feet in plastic bags “because of the smell”. Pictures of the 23-year-old, who was admitted to a hospital in Indonesia in January emaciated and in critical condition, drew international condemnation as they spread on social media. But on Monday, Sulistyaningsih, dressed in a purple jacket and white woollen jumper, remained calm as she told the court how Law had even “scratched my nose and my face” with her bare hands. In one incident, she described being stripped naked, sprayed with water and made to stand in front of a fan in the bathroom in the middle of winter.

Prosecutors also allege Law used household items such as a mop, vacuum cleaner and a clothes hanger as “weapons” against Sulistyaningsih. “She put a vacuum cleaner into my mouth... and twisted it round my lips. It was bleeding and very painful,” Sulistyaningsih said. Law faces 21 charges -- also relating to two other former domestic helpers -- including grievous bodily harm with intent, criminal intimidation and failure to pay wages. The most serious are punishable by up to life in prison. The 44-year-old mother-of-two was arrested in January as she tried to board a flight to Thailand but was released on bail pending the trial. Dressed in a light brown coat and thick-rimmed glasses, Law kept her head down as her former maid described the alleged abuse, occasionally shooting her a glance. Earlier she had pleaded not guilty to all but one of the charges against her, admitting only that she had failed to arrange insurance for Sulistyaningsih. Hong Kong is home to nearly 300,000 maids, mainly from Indonesia and the Philippines. Sulistyaningsih on Monday said she became a virtual prisoner in the house where she worked after she was caught trying to run away. After that Law took her passport and wallet and locked her in the house at all times, she said. It was only when she was too weak to talk that Law bought her a ticket for home. “She threatened to kill my parents back home if I talk about the torture to anyone,” Sulistyaningsih said. The case is continuing.
