Jolie Pitt turns grief over mom’s death into ‘By the Sea’
LOS ANGELES — “By the Sea” is a very personal film for Angelina Jolie Pitt — and not just because it reunites her onscreen with her husband, Brad Pitt. It’s not even because she wrote, directed, produced and stars in the film. “By the Sea” is personal because it was inspired by the grief of losing her mother in 2007, Jolie Pitt said Thursday at the film’s premiere, AFI Fest’s openingnight gala at Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theatre. She started writing when she was missing her mother, without knowing exactly what she was creating.

“When you write something from a blank page, it’s very hard to say, ‘This is important,’ because you don’t know: It’s your own life. It’s your own depression. It’s your own questions about your mother. Grief. Where to put your pain,” Jolie Pitt said. “For me, it was important to try to do it. And it was important to try to do it for my mother. It was important for myself. And it was wonderful to work with Brad, and for us to be able to get through it together, because we tested ourselves to see if we could do something like this together.” “By the Sea” is a slow, quiet drama about a wealthy American couple on a French seaside retreat. Roland (Pitt) is there to write, but mostly just ends up drinking. Vanessa (Jolie Pitt) is there to relax, but ends up grumping around and popping pills. They avoid each other and their relationship is clearly strained. Their dynamic begins to change when they befriend (and secretly spy on) a newlywed couple on their honeymoon. The camera lingers on Roland’s lean frame and Vanessa’s face and figure. As in 2005’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” the two stars play a married pair facing serious relationship challenges. Only this time, the actors relied on the strength of their real-life relationship to do it. “It’s really no different than trying to get the kids to bed at night,” Pitt said.” I mean, you know, it’s a tag team, Ultimate Wrestling kind of endeavor. And here on set, again, we’re working together and solving problems and making the thing work and figuring it out. And there’s just a great collaboration. She’s just, she’s my wife.” As for being directed by his spouse? “She’s very decisive. She’s really intuitive,” Pitt said. “Her instincts are really good with stories. So, I really trust her when she redirects a scene.” Jolie Pitt loved working with her husband, too. “You’re going to have a long life ahead of you and you’ve got to shake it up and, sometimes, it’s really wonderful to test yourselves, to push each other,” she said. I talked to (actress) Gena Rowlands. She was talking before, and how she and (director-husband) John (Cassavetes) (would) take the rubber band and you stretch it as far as you can. Supermodel Gisele Bundchen launches photo book in Brazil
SAO PAULO — Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen has launched a book of over 300 photographs spanning her 20-year career just months after retiring from the catwalk. Fan Marcelo Spencer says he arrived at midnight to be first in line for Friday’s debut in Sao Paulo and get his copy of “Gisele” signed by the supermodel, who retired in April. Spencer says Bundchen treated him “very well” and wrote a simple dedication inside: “To Marcelo, handsome, blond, tall and thin. From your diva, Gisele.” The Portuguese-language version of “Gisele” sells for either $500 or $925 for the deluxe edition. (ap)

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou came together on neutral ground in the Southeast Asian city-state of Singapore, walking toward each other in a hotel ballroom in front of a backdrop of yellow — a traditional color of Chinese emperors. The two men smiled broadly as they shook hands for more than one minute, turning slightly to the side to accommodate a host of photojournalists in the ballroom. No national flags were present — a necessary work-around to overcome China’s refusal to recognize Taiwan’s sovereignty or its government’s formal legitimacy — and the two men were referred to merely as “Mr. Xi” and “Mr. Ma” to further reduce the chances of bruised sensitivities. In brief opening remarks in front of reporters before going into a closed-door meeting, Xi said, “History will record this day.” He alluded to China’s longcherished goals of unification with Taiwan, saying, “We are one family,” and “No force can pull
us apart.” Ma said, “Both sides should respect each other’s values and way of life,” while adding that relations between the sides were “the most peaceful and stable they have ever been.” When they split in 1949, both sides aspired to absorb the other, with each claiming the mantle of the only legitimate government of all of China, Taiwan included. Communist Party-ruled China still demands that Taiwan eventually be unified with the mainland, by force if necessary, while many citizens of democratic Taiwan increasingly prefer to simply maintain the separate status the island has carved out over more than six decades. CHALLENGES to the task of safeguarding and passing on Balinese ideals to the younger generation are becoming increasingly diverse. although it seems like it would be easy to identify the challenges and take them on, the reality is that young Balinese are becoming
‘foreigners’ in their own land and Balinese people in general are being marginalized by the forces of modernization and tourism. Palm-leaf manuscript researcher, Sugi Lanus suggests that young people be encouraged not to get dissolved into foreign cultures. “Go back to being Balinese and develop your village as the last fortress that guards the land
of Bali,” he advised. Lanus who often speaks at international youth seminars, also believes that in order to remain competitive, young people in Bali need to seize employment opportunities in Bali, have the courage to open businesses in their villages and to become suppliers for the growing needs of the tourism industry. “Entrepreneur-

According to Lanus, it is normal that foreigners end up managing hotels and restaurants, given that that the hospitality and restaurant industry came from the west. But letting foreigners control agriculture and exploit the potential of villages, is a big problem and we are already seeing this happen. Many coffee, vegetables, local fruits and coconut oil businesses are already in the hands of foreigner businesses operating in Bali. Balinese youth therefor need to learn about the potential to develop businesses based on Bali’s resources. Sugi Linus who founded the Hanacaraka Institute says that village and hamlet youth organizations need to keep up with the times. Sekaa taruna or customary village youth clubs need to get their members ready for the job market. “Kite and ogoh-ogoh (papier mâché demons) competitions are good but just imagine if this creative energy was put towards developing rural businesses,” he said. If Balinese youth start taking advantage of local meeting halls as venues for training in entrepreneurship and the like, this generation
will be hard to beat. “Balinese youth need to unite” he said. Village and hamlet meeting halls serves as strongholds of the culture an the economy and village credit agencies (LPD) for example, could provide capital to start businesses. Balinese youth seem to fogey about these options with many choosing instead to work for the tourism sector for a low wage. “By developing businesses and developing our villages, we will become formidable hosts,” explained Lanus. Balinese youth, he added, are certainly capable but must be diligent about reading and opening their horizons. “Young people need to read all the treasures found in palm- leaf manuscripts and be ready to learn about to truly become balances, instead of just reading Facebook,” he said, adding that young Balinese end up trying to imitate the lifestyle of foreign travellers and have, in the process themselves become estranged from Balinese culture, though their income remains local. Lanus urges the young people of Bali to come back to their roots and to maintain the local mindset, eat local foods and dare to live close to nature. According to Lanus, Balinese is more than just a label -it means to be rooted in local wisdom, yet so
many young people have forgotten and think that foreign cultures are more advanced. In fact Balinese wisdom has a lot of insight into

Cultural adaptation must not change character
ACCULTURATION to the impacts of modernization should not mean that Balinese people loose their identity. Balinese characteristics need to remain inherent in Balinese people and upholding cultural customs needs to remain a commitment that is inherited. But how is this to be done? According to Rector of the Hindu Dharma Institute (IHDN) Denpasar, Prof. Dr. I Nengah Duija Balinese youth are indeed facing many challenges related to escorting Bali into the future. Duija said that currently there are five public responses to the influx of external cultures. They are: immediately adopting external culture, slowly adapting or filtering them, encouraging Balinese culture, revitalizing or reviving the old aspects of the culture and going up against external culture by giving no space for them to have any impact. “Balinese people tend to respond
to the onslaught of various cultural values from other places, by adopting them. In the long run, this will mean profond changes to Balinese culture,” said Duija who stressed that by slowly adapting to other values, this could also mean that Balinese people loose touch with their own culture altogether. “Obviously, we are worried about this. Balinese identity depends on strengthening and reinforcement of religious and cultural customs in the face of so much external influence”. Duija points out that focus needs to be centred on certain aspects of life that should be
based on Balinese cultural values. When a cultural concept changes, he said, the orientation of values also changes. Balinese society at large has already undergone significant psychological changes with values shifting in terms of modes of consumption, lifestyle, household habits and social relationships. Made Suardana, manager of a four-star hotel in Bali hopes that despite the onslaught of modernization and external cultural influences that Balinese people will remain aware. The younger generations as the successors of Balinese culture, need to fortify themselves against these influences so that they can maintain Bali. “As Balinese people, we should be proud to be embody our culture. This can be start with small things such as speaking Balinese and teaching our kids to speak it too,” he advised.
“Nowadays, people are sometimes ashamed of teaching their children to speak Balinese, especially in urban areas,” he said. Moreover, continued Suardana, Balinese people have attributes that should be maintained as part of their identity. “We should be proud to have a first name like Wayan, Made, Nyoman, Ketut and others for example,” he said. Living according to customary manners that have become well known the world over should also continue as long as it does not burden social life. We should not let our next generation be afraid that customary rules are burdensome. According to Suardana, in harmony with the changing times and the face of modernization, our customs should not prevent us from earning a living. “All must
work in harmony because without culture and customs, Bali will mean nothing. So, the next generations should not be afraid of competing and never say that Balinese customs are complicated,” he said. Kadek Agus Mulyawan, the owner of PT Aura International, said that basically many Balinese people are very capable but that they need the support of the local government in ensuring that Balinese people are given priority. When asked whether the younger generation can preserve Balinese ways of life, Agus who is also a lawyer admitted that he is still optimistic. “The younger generation of Bali can still escort Balinese culture into the futur. To that end, the attitudes and behaviour of the next generation of Balinese people, should be safeguarded,” he advised. (rin/rah)

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Bleisure travel shows Orlando parks not just for kids
A helicopter manufacturer landed a new model chopper at Walt Disney World. A tech conference booked Universal’s Harry Potter park. Those are just a few examples of how conventions and conferences take advantage of Orlando, Florida’s theme parks when they hold their meetings there. The parks are obviously a big attraction for families, but those rides aren’t just for kids: Orlando is also a very popular destination for conferences, conventions and other types of business travel. While most of the 62 million people who visited Orlando in 2014
were leisure travelers, the city is also the No. 1 destination for meetings, including 5 million convention delegates annually, according to Visit Orlando CEO George Aguel. Business travelers find two ways to enjoy the parks and other attractions. Some come in a few days early or stay a few days later, often bringing their families along to enjoy time at the parks. Since the business traveler’s plane fare is already paid for, that makes the
trip that much cheaper. Hotels will usually extend conference room rates for attendees who want to stay a couple of days longer, Aguel said. But many conventions and conferences work with theme parks to plan an exclusive, customized outing for their participants, often in the afternoon or evening. The events typically include catered food and drinks, and exclusive access for a period of time to rides and attractions in that section so they don’t have to wait on lines. “Instead of doing a traditional banquet in a hotel ballroom, they
see the opportunity to gather the group and take them into a theme park one evening and take over a land or a section of the theme park,” Aguel said. “The goal is to have time for the attendees to spend together and network, but adding the entertainment component really enhances the experience.” For example, Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference held a party at Walt Disney World’s Epcot with private dining and access to the rides after they closed to the public. Another exhibitor from the helicopter group’s Heli-Expo trade show in Orlando hosted an event at Universal Studios’ theme park that included exclusive access for their guests to Transformers: The Ride 3D. And last year, Tech Data Corp. hosted 500 attendees at its Channel Link conference at Universal Orlando with an after-hours reception at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Diagon Alley. Guests had the Escape from Gringotts attraction all to themselves. Other groups have gone to SeaWorld for team-building exercises that involve completing various themed missions. In addition to Disney, Universal and SeaWorld, Orlando has numerous golf courses and Point Orlando, a retail dining and entertainment district with restaurants, shopping and more. Orlando’s convention center building is located near a number of hotels, a few minutes’ drive from the parks. Aguel said the city is also the car rental capital of the U.S., thanks to all those visitors driving between the airport, hotels and the parks. A trolley also serves the main route connecting those sites, known locally as the “I-drive.” But even those whose Orlando meetings don’t include organized outings at the parks find ways to take advantage of the location. Marti Mayne, a consultant for the travel and B&B industry with her own business, Maynely Marketing, booked extra days and brought her family along when B&B industry meetings took her to Orlando and to Anaheim, California, where Disneyland is located. “My kids love amusement parks,” she said. DUBAI — It will soon be possible to watch the sun rise over Dubai from the world’s tallest building. The Burj Khalifa announced Thursday it is selling tickets on the United Arab Emirates’ weekend of Friday and Saturday for sunrise viewings. The building’s management says the sessions start from 5:30 a.m. with viewings every 30 minutes on the 124th floor until 8 a.m. Weekend viewings previously started from 8:30 a.m. Tickets are 125 dirhams ($34) for adults and 95 dirhams ($26) for children ages 4 to 12. Children under 4 can enter for free. The spired 2,717-foot (828-meter) tall Burj Khalifa opened to the public in January 2010. (ap)

Head of KNAM, Reza Fabianus, stated that this will allow Indonesia to gain direct access to the global market. On Saturday (Nov 7), Fabianus said that through the deal, cooperatives and SMEs will gain a lot of bargaining power by standing with an international corporations. “Official cooperation -in the form of Harley Davidson merchandise such as leather jackets, boots, silver bracelets, is a breakthrough into the upscale segment of the global market,” said Fabianus. Harley Owners Group (HOG), is a huge market and this deal is a great opportunity for cooperatives and SMEs in Indonesia. Data shows that the amount of money spent per month on Harley Davidson merchandise, such as leather jackets, helmets, hats, accessories, wallets and other leather accessories, exceeds the amount spent on Harley Davidson motorbikes by 30 percent. “As much as USD 5 million a month is spent on Harleys while 30 percent more that that is spent on Harley merchandise,” said Fabianus Minister of Cooperatives and SMEs, AAGN Puspayoga, who
witnessed the signing ceremony for this agreement, expressed his pride at the success of Indonesia’s cooperatives and SMEs in entering the global market, explaining that this is no easy feat. Quality and other requirements are not easy for SME’s and cooperatives to meet. “We would like to express our appreciation to the Koperasi Nasional Aku Mandiri and Harley Davidson Motor Cycles (HDMC) for their efforts to revitalized Indonesian cooperatives and SMEs through training, marketing, and increasing their abilities allowing them to market their products under the brand of Harley Davidson,” said Minister Puspayoga. The signing of the distribution agreement is a proof to the world that Indonesian SMEs are on par with global brands. “This is an encouraging trend for tourism in Bali that the economic growth is still conducive, and increasing number of British tourists are travelling to Bali,” Bali tourism observer Made Sudana stated. Based on the list of foreign tourist arrivals to Bali, 119,839 British tourists directly arrived in Bali in the January-September 2015 period. The number increased by 25.29 percent compared to 95,652 tourists noted in the same period last year. He admitted that foreign tourists, predominantly Australian, Chinese, and Japanese, visited Bali.
“However, the number of travelers from Europe has started to increase,” he pointed out. Based on information provided by the Bali Government Tourism Office, Britain was placed fifth in the list of foreign tourist arrivals to Bali and constituted about four percent of the 2.9 million tourists visiting Bali during this period. From the European region, most tourists arrived in Bali from Britain followed by France, Germany, and the Netherlands. A total of 622,486 tourist arrivals were recorded from the European region in the January-

Tourism developments need to adhere to new RTRW bylaw
DENPASAR - After some delays, the legislative draft on Bali Regional Tourism Development Master Plan (Riparda) 20152029 was finally passed into law during the eighth plenary session of the Bali House of Representatives, on Wednesday (Nov. 4). The master plan that consists of nine chapters, 75 articles and an appendix will now be officially verified by the federal government. Special Committee Chairman of the Riparda, I Wayan Rawan Atmaja, explained that the draft for the master plan was meant to be passed not law on April 28th, 2015, but that they delayed the process in order to make sure that it was sound before passing the by-law. Discussion on the draft involved the Tourism Office, the Culture
Agency, the regional development planning board (Bappeda) as well as the Legal Bureau and the Bureau of Human Rights bureau. District and municipal tourism office across Bali also took part. “The working meeting with the executive branch of the house of representatives, the Bappeda, Tourism Office, Culture Agency as
well as the Legal and Human Rights Bureau of the Regional Secretariat of the Province of Bali that took place on October 20, 2015 resulted in the tourism development master plan that still refers to Regional Bylaw No. 16/2009 on the provincial spatial planning (RTRWP),” said Atmaja recently. Previously, a working meeting led to correcting article 67 of the tourism development master plan draft in accordance with Law No. 2/2012 on Cultural Tourism. legal instrument to protect cultural tourism, guides and so on. “In Article 1 of the general provision regarding the formulation of Balinese culture a phrase was added after the citing of “Tri Hita Karana” in Article 1 point 11 and Article 2, for paragraph 5 on the direction of policies related to the development of the tourism industry,” added Atmaja. In essence several articles were amended to include the phrase ‘tourist attraction’ such as in Article 14 paragraph 1 letter (c) as well as Articles 15 to 18, Articles 23 to 25, Article 27, Article 32, Article 33 and Article 36. Article 60 (a) was
adapted to to included implementing labor competency certification and standardization of tourism businesses. “This is reference to the principles and standards to be applied nationally and internationally in order to optimize the utilization of local resources,” explained Atmaja who went on to say that districts and municipalities proposed that aspects regarding tourist areas that are not covered in the annex of the Bali Regional Tourism Development Master Plan, need to be adjustment through a revision of the Regional Bylaw on the RTRWP Bali. DENPASAR - The Bali House of Representatives passed the draft for a regional bylaw on Bali’s regional budget 2016, into law during the their eighth plenary meeting. Regional revenue was agreed at IDR 5.149 trillion -an increase of IDR 3.79 billion compared to the previous draft proposed by the governor. “The increase in revenue is mainly sourced from the increasing regionally generated revenue of IDR 3.79 billion of the regional budget proposed by governor: between IDR 3.35 trillion to IDR 3.353 trillion,” said Chairman of the Special Committee of the Regional Budget 2016, I Ketut Kariyasa Adnyana. Adnyana added that not only has income increased but so has regional expenditures. In the initial draft, it was set as IDR 5.41 trillion but was then increased to IDR 5.506 trillion. Approximately IDR 3.988 trillion is being allocated to indirect expenditures with an IDR 8.18 increase in expenditure on grants and approximately IDR 1,517 trillion is being allocated for direct expenditure. “Foe direct expenditure, capital expenditure is designed at IDR 629 billion or 11.43 percent of the total budget of 2016,” said Adnyana adding that capital expenditure remains relatively small compared to the total of direct expenditure. In terms of the public expenditure ratio, indirect expenditure is noted to have increased by 72.44 percent while direct expenditure has only increased by 27.56 percent. This indicates that the budget is heavily aimed geared towards personnel and consumptive spending and that programs for community development are therefore still lacking. “We suggest that the executive branch of the house of representatives pay more attention to increases in direct expenditure such as capital expenditure that have gradually become a priority ,before designing the budget for other expenditures,” he explained. For example, the community builds temples and repairs road to temple, while other grants are used to build rural roads or meeting hall et cetera. MARIANA, Brazil - Rescuers will spend a fourth day Sunday scouring for survivors beneath an avalanche of mud and mining sludge that buried a village in southeast Brazil, killing at least two people and leaving 28 missing. Hundreds of firefighters, soldiers and civil defense workers are frantically combing through the viscous mass that swallowed everything in its path for signs of life. The increasingly desperate search was suspended at dusk Saturday because “it is a high-risk area that is difficult to access,” said Duarte Goncalves Junior, mayor of the nearby city of Mariana. The tragedy occurred when waste reservoirs at the partly Australian-owned Samarco iron ore mine burst open, unleashing a sea of muck that flattened the nearby
village of Bento Rodrigues on Thursday. Since then, the tidal wave of sludge has continued its destructive advance, leveling a neighborhood and the main plaza in the town of Barra Longa, 60 kilometers (35 miles) away, but causing no loss of life there, a spokesman for the mayor’s office told AFP. The cascade of debris began with the collapse of a dike at a reservoir holding mining waste, which spilled into an adjoining valley. A short time later, a water reservoir broke, and the mass of liquid sludge swept over Bento Rodrigues. “There was a horrible noise and we saw the mud approaching. We ran for it. It is a miracle that we are still alive,” said Valeria de Souza, 20, with a baby in her arms and tears in her eyes.
But not everyone was so lucky and families of the missing were desperately seeking news of their loved ones, amid widely disparate official information. Authorities have given contradictory tolls of the dead and missing in and around Bento Rodrigues, which has a population of about 620. The head of Mariana’s firefighting force, Adao Severino Junior, had said that there were at least 17 dead, adding to the confusion. But the official toll was later revised to at least two dead and 28 missing, said Goncalves Junior. Mining giant BHP Billiton, joint owners of the mine with the Brazilian company Vale, said it was offering support. “Words cannot describe the impact of this tragedy on the employees and contractors of Samarco,

TOKYO - Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Friday hailed a huge Pacific Rim free-trade deal, saying it showcased a bid by Japan and the United States to set rules for the global economy. His comments come a day after the long-secret text of the TransPacific Partnership (TPP) was made public. The massive document, posted online by several governments, offered the first detailed look at the world’s biggest free trade area, which aims to break down barriers to commerce and investment between a dozen countries comprising about 40 percent of the global economy. The US and Japan are the proposed bloc’s two biggest econo-
mies. “Rules should not be something that are imposed on you -- you make them,” Abe told an economic forum in Tokyo. “The TPP is the structure where Japan and the US can lead in economic rule-making.” Abe also said he would “enthusiastically welcome” South Korea and Indonesia, which have signalled interest in joining, into the zone, so long as they “accept the rules” that Tokyo helped write. The pact, agreed a month ago,
aims to break down trade and investment barriers among participating nations Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the United States and Vietnam. As prices of raw materials drop, China October imports fall BEIJING — Lower commodity prices and sluggish demands dragged down China’s October trade figures, although the volume of imported oil and other raw materials rose as the world’s second largest economy stocked up on a few bargains, showed customs data released on Sunday. Imports fell by 16 percent from a year ago, while exports shrank by 3.6 percent. Overall, China’s foreign trade dropped 9 percent, marking the eighth consecutive monthly decline. The contractions again in October show China’s economic slowdown has yet to bottom out and that exports were hurt by slack global demand. “With imports still down on a year ago in real terms, this trade data does not suggest a material pick up in domestic demand momentum in October,” said Louis Kuijs of Oxford Economics in a report. Chinese purchases of foreign goods improved from September’s 20.4 percent decline. Purchases of raw materials such as crude oil and soybeans went up in quantities, but China paid far less for the goods than a year ago because of lower prices. Yet, data also showed China cut back on purchases of coal, steel, copper and aluminum, in a sign of sluggish economy. Sales of Chinese goods to foreign markets fell 3.6 percent, a slight improvement from the previous month’s 3.7 percent contraction. Since getting no maintenance for long time, some of the half-finished buildings are now overgrown with weeds. Some parts of the buildings are even damaged. Division Head of General Assets and Equipment at the Bangli Regional Secretariat, Made Mahindra Putra, when asked for his confirmation explained that the project standing on the land asset of the government of Bangli was
first built with the funding of central government for kindergarten and international elementary school. The construction was carried out around 2008. In the course of the development emerged a legal case afflicting to the project so that the construction was halted. He said that 40 percent of the debris from the collapsed building had been removed and rescuers were continuing the search with great care in case there were more “miracle” survivors trapped beneath the debris, but added that the
chances of that were very slim more than 72 hours after the collapse. On Saturday rescuers pulled a teenage boy alive from the rubble 50 hours after the structure toppled. The teenager had been trapped for more than two days and his family, thinking him dead, had already identified and buried another recovered body they believed to be his. The four-storey Rajput Polyester polythene bag factory came crashing down on Wednesday evening. Officials have said at least 150 people were in the factory when it came down and it was unclear how many -- dead or alive -- may still

PATNA, INDIA - Narendra Modi conceded defeat Sunday in a key election in Bihar, one of India’s poorest and largest states, in a major blow for the prime minister who fronted a no-holds barred campaign. Indonesia deploys seven warships to Natuna
JAKARTA - The Indonesian Navy has sent seven warships to the Natuna waters in the Sumatran province of Riau Islands to safeguard the country’s territorial waters. “This is a routine patrol program carried out by the navy to safeguard Natuna waters. Moreover illegal fishing activities have also often happened in the region,” Navy spokesman Commodore M Zainudin said when asked for confirmation about
the deployment on Sunday. He denied that it was done to anticipate the escalation of the situation in South China Sea. “We are not involved in the conflict in South China Sea. We only safeguard our sovereignty and
NKRI (Unitary State of Indonesia) defense,” he said. He said not all of the seven ships would be stationed in the Natuna waters. “Only three ships would standby in the Natuna waters while the four others would be in Tanjung Uban naval base. They will in turn conduct patrols,” he said. He said the Indonesian navy conducts patrol everyday with regard to
safeguard its sovereignty and defense in the eastern as well as western regions involving more than 40 war ships. “In the Indonesian eastern region we deploy more than 20 ships to safeguard Ambalat, Arafuru Sea and others while in the western region there are 20 ships safeguarding the Malacca Strait, Natuna waters and others,” he said. KUPANG - The earthquake hitting Alor district in East Nusa Tenggara on November 4 has caused a lot of damage which is estimated to reach Rp49.8 billion in value. “The figures are still produced based on temporary data collected by the regional chapter of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD),” the head of data and information center and public
relations of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said in a press statement received on Sunday. He said the earthquake had damaged roads, bridges, irrigation networks, housing facilities, school buildings, churches and other houses of prayer as well as government offices. Sutopo said collection of data
is still continuing while roads that have been damaged or covered by landslides are still being restored involving military personnel. “Until now restoration is still being carried out by BPBDs of the province and the district,” he said. Sutopo said five sub-districts and 18 villages had been affected by the earthquake. So far two people from the vil-
lage of Maritaing in Alor Timur sub-district and Subo village in Alor Selatan have been seriously injured while one man in the sub-district of Alor Timur Laut has been lightly hurt because of the quake. A total of 735 houses in Alor Timur, 10 in Alor Timur Utara, 4 in Lembur, 53 in Alor Timur Laut and 82 in Alor Selatan sub-districts have been damaged.
Most houses in Maritaing village in Alor Timur sub-district had been damaged in addition to 51 units of school, community health care center, house of prayer and office buildings. Ireland opens embassy in Jakarta
JAKARTA - Ireland has opened an embassy in Jakarta proving that country’s commitment to increasing its relations with Indonesia. The opening of the embassy and the extension of credentials of its ambassador to the President were carried out in September 2015, according to a press statement from the foreign ministry on Sunday. Ireland’s foreign minister Charles Flanagan confirmed the report during a meeting with his Indonesian counterpart Retno LP Marsudi on the sidelines of the 12th Asia-Europe Meeting in Luxemburg on November 5. At the meeting between the two countries’ foreign ministers, which was the first, foreign minister Retno had asked for Ireland’s support to Indonesia’s request for a free visa facility for its citizens to visit Schengen countries. In response the Irish foreign minister pledged he would give positive consideration to the request. At the meeting the Irish foreign minister also said that the Irish government would send its ambassador to represent his country at the Bali Democracy Forum to be held in Bali on December 9-10. Minister Retno had used the 12th ASEM from November 4 to 6 to conduct bilateral meetings. LONDON - Britain’s Tour de France champion Chris Froome has said data from physiological tests that he underwent earlier this year will be published on December 3 by men’s magazine Esquire UK. Froome made the announcement via Twitter on Saturday after studying the proposed courses for next year’s Olympic Games in Rio. “As promised, I will be making the results and analysis of the independent testing I did after #TDF2015 available to the public,” said Froome on Twitter. He said sports scientists had completed analysis of tests done when he was a member of the International Cycling Union-funded World Cycling Centre in 2007 and those done at the GSK Human Performance Lab in August. The Cycling News website said Froome’s announcement followed a “contentious Twitter exchange” between his wife, Michele, and journalists Matt Slater and Paul Kimmage regarding a delay in the data’s release. Froome and Team Sky, for whom he rides, were both criticised during this year’s Tour de France when data which appeared to show Froome’s power, cadence, and heart-rate values from his stagewinning ride on Mont Ventoux in the 2013 Tour was posted online and later made into a video. The video showed Froome’s values fluctuating in real time and this led the likes of French performance expert Pierre Sallet and former professional Laurent Jalabert to question Froome’s
performances. It was posted before Froome pulled clear of his main rivals on the first mountain finish to PierreSaint Martin in the Pyrenees, setting up his second overall success. After the video’s release, Froome suffered abuse during the race, when a cup of urine was allegedly thrown at him during a stage. On the second rest day in Gap, Team Sky revealed a series of numbers concerning Froome’s physiological performances, especially on the Pierre-Saint Martin climb. The fact former Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong eventually admitted to doping throughout his career in 2013, after years of denials and ruthless attacks on his accusers, has cast a long shadow over cycling. In October, while riding in Japan’s Criterium de Saitama, the 30year-old Froome said the doping suspicions hanging over him were “unfortunate” and “frustrating”. “It’s unfortunate that’s what the yellow jersey wearer of the Tour de France has to put up with,” Froome said. “If I had something to hide or I had some elaborate scheme going on then it would really bother me, it would be my whole world crashing down,” he added. “But I don’t have any skeletons in the closet, I don’t have anything to genuinely be afraid of. MANCHESTER - Louis van Gaal claims Manchester United will not be shackled at Old Trafford after they kept their patience to grind out a 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion. Van Gaal’s side have found goals hard to come by of late and they initially found it difficult to break down an Albion team that defended in numbers. But Albion’s plan was shattered seven minutes into the second half on Saturday when Jesse Lingard scored his first United goal to break the deadlock. Juan Mata wrapped up the points for United with a stoppagetime penalty after defender Gareth McAuley had been sent off for bringing down Anthony Martial. And van Gaal insisted United’s victory, which followed a 1-0 midweek success against CSKA Moscow in the Champions League, may change how opposition managers view trips to Old Trafford. “We have to attack better against these defensive organisations but it is the most difficult way you can play as a team,” van Gaal said. “But it is good we have won because the next manager shall not choose so easily this strategy. “We have also won against CSKA Moscow and they have the same strategy. It is good we send a signal that you can do that but you lose. “We have won a very difficult game. Last year we lost against this opponent and probably because of that Tony Pulis chooses this strategy again. Now we have won and so we are improving.” United have still scored just once from open play in their last four domestic fixtures and there remains a question mark about their attacking intent, a short-coming recently criticised by former United midfielder Paul Scholes. Hodgson warns England strike duo over fitness LONDON - England manager Roy Hodgson has warned Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck they must prove their fitness if they are to be included in his squad for next year’s European Championship. Arsenal striker Welbeck has not played since April due to a knee injury, while a succession of thigh, calf, hip and knee problems has restricted Sturridge to 15 Liverpool starts since the beginning of last season. Welbeck, 24, began England’s Euro 2016 qualifying campaign up front alongside Wayne Rooney and Sturridge, 26, has started regularly when fit, but with Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy having both emerged over the course of the last 12 months, the England manager is not short of alternatives. “If you want a philosophy, I wouldn’t be happy to really take players with us in the hope that they will become fit during the tournament,” Hodgson told journalists at Wembley this week. “I would rather have 23 players who are all fit and ready to go and capable of playing from the very first minute when I name the squad.” Hodgson nonetheless remains hopeful that both Welbeck and Sturridge will have enough games under their belts to be legitimate candidates for selection by the time he reveals his 23-man squad for the tournament. MANCHESTER - Louis van Gaal claims Manchester United will not be shackled at Old Trafford after they kept their patience to grind out a 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion. Van Gaal’s side have found goals hard to come by of late and they initially found it difficult to break down an Albion team that defended in numbers. But Albion’s plan was shattered seven minutes into the second half on Saturday when Jesse Lingard scored his first United goal to break the deadlock. Juan Mata wrapped up the points for United with a stoppagetime penalty after defender Gareth McAuley had been sent off for bringing down Anthony Martial. And van Gaal insisted United’s victory, which followed a 1-0 midweek success against CSKA Moscow in the Champions League, may change how opposition managers view trips to Old Trafford. “We have to attack better against these defensive organisations but it is the most difficult way you can play as a team,” van Gaal said. “But it is good we have won because the next manager shall not choose so easily this strategy. “We have also won against CSKA Moscow and they have the same strategy. It is good we send a signal that you can do that but you lose. “We have won a very difficult game. Last year we lost against this opponent and probably because of that Tony Pulis chooses this strategy again. Now we have won and so we are improving.” United have still scored just once from open play in their last four domestic fixtures and there remains a question mark about their attacking intent, a short-coming recently criticised by former United midfielder Paul Scholes. Hodgson warns England strike duo over fitness LONDON - England manager Roy Hodgson has warned Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck they must prove their fitness if they are to be included in his squad for next year’s European Championship. Arsenal striker Welbeck has not played since April due to a knee injury, while a succession of thigh, calf, hip and knee problems has restricted Sturridge to 15 Liverpool starts since the beginning of last season. Welbeck, 24, began England’s Euro 2016 qualifying campaign up front alongside Wayne Rooney and Sturridge, 26, has started regularly when fit, but with Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy having both emerged over the course of the last 12 months, the England manager is not short of alternatives. “If you want a philosophy, I wouldn’t be happy to really take players with us in the hope that they will become fit during the tournament,” Hodgson told journalists at Wembley this week. “I would rather have 23 players who are all fit and ready to go and capable of playing from the very first minute when I name the squad.” Hodgson nonetheless remains hopeful that both Welbeck and Sturridge will have enough games under their belts to be legitimate candidates for selection by the time he reveals his 23-man squad for the tournament. LONDON - Britain’s Tour de France champion Chris Froome has said data from physiological tests that he underwent earlier this year will be published on December 3 by men’s magazine Esquire UK. Froome made the announcement via Twitter on Saturday after studying the proposed courses for next year’s Olympic Games in Rio. “As promised, I will be making the results and analysis of the independent testing I did after #TDF2015 available to the public,” said Froome on Twitter. He said sports scientists had completed analysis of tests done when he was a member of the International Cycling Union-funded World Cycling Centre in 2007 and those done at the GSK Human Performance Lab in August. The Cycling News website said Froome’s announcement followed a “contentious Twitter exchange” between his wife, Michele, and journalists Matt Slater and Paul Kimmage regarding a delay in the data’s release. Froome and Team Sky, for whom he rides, were both criticised during this year’s Tour de France when data which appeared to show Froome’s power, cadence, and heart-rate values from his stagewinning ride on Mont Ventoux in the 2013 Tour was posted online and later made into a video. The video showed Froome’s values fluctuating in real time and this led the likes of French performance expert Pierre Sallet and former professional Laurent Jalabert to question Froome’s
performances. It was posted before Froome pulled clear of his main rivals on the first mountain finish to PierreSaint Martin in the Pyrenees, setting up his second overall success. After the video’s release, Froome suffered abuse during the race, when a cup of urine was allegedly thrown at him during a stage. On the second rest day in Gap, Team Sky revealed a series of numbers concerning Froome’s physiological performances, especially on the Pierre-Saint Martin climb. The fact former Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong eventually admitted to doping throughout his career in 2013, after years of denials and ruthless attacks on his accusers, has cast a long shadow over cycling. In October, while riding in Japan’s Criterium de Saitama, the 30year-old Froome said the doping suspicions hanging over him were “unfortunate” and “frustrating”. “It’s unfortunate that’s what the yellow jersey wearer of the Tour de France has to put up with,” Froome said. “If I had something to hide or I had some elaborate scheme going on then it would really bother me, it would be my whole world crashing down,” he added. “But I don’t have any skeletons in the closet, I don’t have anything to genuinely be afraid of. The incident,which took place near the Punjab provincial capital of Lahore on Wednesday, has underscored poor safety standards in the underdeveloped South Asian country of 200 million. “Forty-one bodies have been recovered and three wounded workers who were rescued alive, died at hospital,” Muhammad Usman, a top administration official in Lahore, told AFP. He said that 40 percent of the debris from the collapsed building had been removed and rescuers were continuing the search with great care in case there were more “miracle” survivors trapped beneath the debris, but added that the
chances of that were very slim more than 72 hours after the collapse. On Saturday rescuers pulled a teenage boy alive from the rubble 50 hours after the structure toppled. The teenager had been trapped for more than two days and his family, thinking him dead, had already identified and buried another recovered body they believed to be his. The four-storey Rajput Polyester polythene bag factory came crashing down on Wednesday evening. Officials have said at least 150 people were in the factory when it came down and it was unclear how many -- dead or alive -- may still
be trapped. Punjab chief minister Shahbaz Sharif has said the factory may have suffered structural damage in a 7.5 magnitude earthquake last month, which killed almost 400 people across Pakistan and Afghanistan. Provincial labour minister Raja Ashfaq Sarwar said that an inquiry into the collapse “is being conducted and we will probe all angles”, with a report to be submitted within two weeks. At least 24 people died last year when a mosque collapsed in the same city, while more than 200 people lost their lives, mostly due to collapsed roofs, following torrential rain and flooding in 2014. PATNA, INDIA - Narendra Modi conceded defeat Sunday in a key election in Bihar, one of India’s poorest and largest states, in a major blow for the prime minister who fronted a no-holds barred campaign. Modi’s Hindu nationalist party was leading in only 58 seats in the 243-seat state assembly compared to 160 for a coalition of rival regional parties, as vote counting continued. “Had a telephone conversation with Shri @NitishKumar & congratulated him on the victory,” Modi said on Twitter of his main opponent, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. LOS ANGELES - A missile test off the California coast sparked frenzy on social media and spooked residents Saturday who believed they had just seen a UFO. The Twitter hashtags #Navy, #comet and #UFO were trending as social media users uploaded videos and pictures of the mysterious bright light illuminating the night skies. “There’s a UFO in Los Angeles. I’m so excited. I’m so ready,” tweeted Shane Dawson, well known for his YouTube videos. “Los Angeles UFO? It was not a comet. My son saw the Unidentified Flying Object in Hollywood,” tweeted @AnnieJacobsen.
The San Diego Union-Tribune said that the streaking light was visible as far away as Nevada and Arizona and authorities were reportedly flooded with calls. relations of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said in a press statement received on Sunday. He said the earthquake had damaged roads, bridges, irrigation networks, housing facilities, school buildings, churches and other houses of prayer as well as government offices. Sutopo said collection of data
is still continuing while roads that have been damaged or covered by landslides are still being restored involving military personnel. “Until now restoration is still being carried out by BPBDs of the province and the district,” he said. Sutopo said five sub-districts and 18 villages had been affected by the earthquake. So far two people from the vil-
lage of Maritaing in Alor Timur sub-district and Subo village in Alor Selatan have been seriously injured while one man in the sub-district of Alor Timur Laut has been lightly hurt because of the quake. A total of 735 houses in Alor Timur, 10 in Alor Timur Utara, 4 in Lembur, 53 in Alor Timur Laut and 82 in Alor Selatan sub-districts have been damaged.

JAKARTA - Ireland has opened an embassy in Jakarta proving that country’s commitment to increasing its relations with Indonesia. The opening of the embassy and the extension of credentials of its ambassador to the President were carried out in September 2015, according to a press statement from the foreign ministry on Sunday. Ireland’s foreign minister Charles Flanagan confirmed the report during a meeting with his Indonesian counterpart Retno LP Marsudi on the sidelines of the 12th Asia-Europe Meeting in Luxemburg on November 5. At the meeting between the two countries’ foreign ministers, which was the first, foreign minister Retno had asked for Ireland’s support to Indonesia’s request for a free visa facility for its citizens to visit Schengen countries. In response the Irish foreign minister pledged he would give positive consideration to the request. At the meeting the Irish foreign minister also said that the Irish government would send its ambassador to represent his country at the Bali Democracy Forum to be held in Bali on December 9-10. Minister Retno had used the 12th ASEM from November 4 to 6 to conduct bilateral meetings. Japan, US lead economic rule-making under TPP
TOKYO - Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Friday hailed a huge Pacific Rim free-trade deal, saying it showcased a bid by Japan and the United States to set rules for the global economy. His comments come a day after the long-secret text of the TransPacific Partnership (TPP) was made public. The massive document, posted online by several governments, offered the first detailed look at the world’s biggest free trade area, which aims to break down barriers to commerce and investment between a dozen countries comprising about 40 percent of the global economy. The US and Japan are the proposed bloc’s two biggest econo-
mies. “Rules should not be something that are imposed on you -- you make them,” Abe told an economic forum in Tokyo. “The TPP is the structure where Japan and the US can lead in economic rule-making.” Abe also said he would “enthusiastically welcome” South Korea and Indonesia, which have signalled interest in joining, into the zone, so long as they “accept the rules” that Tokyo helped write. The pact, agreed a month ago,
aims to break down trade and investment barriers among participating nations Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the United States and Vietnam. The deal now awaits legislative approvals in each one of the dozen members -- a potentially contentious and lengthy process. As prices of raw materials drop, China October imports fall BEIJING — Lower commodity prices and sluggish demands dragged down China’s October trade figures, although the volume of imported oil and other raw materials rose as the world’s second largest economy stocked up on a few bargains, showed customs data released on Sunday. Imports fell by 16 percent from a year ago, while exports shrank by 3.6 percent. Overall, China’s foreign trade dropped 9 percent, marking the eighth consecutive monthly decline. The contractions again in October show China’s economic slowdown has yet to bottom out and that exports were hurt by slack global demand. “With imports still down on a year ago in real terms, this trade data does not suggest a material pick up in domestic demand momentum in October,” said Louis Kuijs of Oxford Economics in a report. Chinese purchases of foreign goods improved from September’s 20.4 percent decline. Purchases of raw materials such as crude oil and soybeans went up in quantities, but China paid far less for the goods than a year ago because of lower prices. Yet, data also showed China cut back on purchases of coal, steel, copper and aluminum, in a sign of sluggish economy. Sales of Chinese goods to foreign markets fell 3.6 percent, a slight improvement from the previous month’s 3.7 percent contraction. Division Head of General Assets and Equipment at the Bangli Regional Secretariat, Made Mahindra Putra, when asked for his confirmation explained that the project standing on the land asset of the government of Bangli was
first built with the funding of central government for kindergarten and international elementary school. The construction was carried out around 2008. In the course of the development emerged a legal case afflicting to the project so that the construction was halted. And the buildings were then used as evidence. “Now, we do not know if the case has got permanent verdict or not,” he explained. Mahindra did not know for sure about the total number of the buildings. Tourism developments need to adhere to new RTRW bylaw
DENPASAR - After some delays, the legislative draft on Bali Regional Tourism Development Master Plan (Riparda) 20152029 was finally passed into law during the eighth plenary session of the Bali House of Representatives, on Wednesday (Nov. 4). The master plan that consists of nine chapters, 75 articles and an appendix will now be officially verified by the federal government. Special Committee Chairman of the Riparda, I Wayan Rawan Atmaja, explained that the draft for the master plan was meant to be passed not law on April 28th, 2015, but that they delayed the process in order to make sure that it was sound before passing the by-law. Discussion on the draft involved the Tourism Office, the Culture
Agency, the regional development planning board (Bappeda) as well as the Legal Bureau and the Bureau of Human Rights bureau. District and municipal tourism office across Bali also took part. “The working meeting with the executive branch of the house of representatives, the Bappeda, Tourism Office, Culture Agency as
well as the Legal and Human Rights Bureau of the Regional Secretariat of the Province of Bali that took place on October 20, 2015 resulted in the tourism development master plan that still refers to Regional Bylaw No. 16/2009 on the provincial spatial planning (RTRWP),” said Atmaja recently. Previously, a working meeting led to correcting article 67 of the tourism development master plan draft in accordance with Law No. 2/2012 on Cultural Tourism. Likewise there was a agreement made to include all fields of the tourism industry into Article 70. The Cultural Tourism Act will be used as a
legal instrument to protect cultural tourism, guides and so on. “In Article 1 of the general provision regarding the formulation of Balinese culture a phrase was added after the citing of “Tri Hita Karana” in Article 1 point 11 and Article 2, for paragraph 5 on the direction of policies related to the development of the tourism industry,” added Atmaja. In essence several articles were amended to include the phrase ‘tourist attraction’ such as in Article 14 paragraph 1 letter (c) as well as Articles 15 to 18, Articles 23 to 25, Article 27, Article 32, Article 33 and Article 36. Article 60 (a) was
adapted to to included implementing labor competency certification and standardization of tourism businesses. “This is reference to the principles and standards to be applied nationally and internationally in order to optimize the utilization of local resources,” explained Atmaja who went on to say that districts and municipalities proposed that aspects regarding tourist areas that are not covered in the annex of the Bali Regional Tourism Development Master Plan, need to be adjustment through a revision of the Regional Bylaw on the RTRWP Bali. DENPASAR - The Bali House of Representatives passed the draft for a regional bylaw on Bali’s regional budget 2016, into law during the their eighth plenary meeting. Regional revenue was agreed at IDR 5.149 trillion -an increase of IDR 3.79 billion compared to the previous draft proposed by the governor. “The increase in revenue is mainly sourced from the increasing regionally generated revenue of IDR 3.79 billion of the regional budget proposed by governor: between IDR 3.35 trillion to IDR 3.353 trillion,” said Chairman of the Special Committee of the Regional Budget 2016, I Ketut Kariyasa Adnyana. Adnyana added that not only has income increased but so has regional expenditures. In the initial draft, it was set as IDR 5.41 trillion but was then increased to IDR 5.506 trillion. Approximately IDR 3.988 trillion is being allocated to indirect expenditures with an IDR 8.18 increase in expenditure on grants and approximately IDR 1,517 trillion is being allocated for direct expenditure. “Foe direct expenditure, capital expenditure is designed at IDR 629 billion or 11.43 percent of the total budget of 2016,” said Adnyana adding that capital expenditure remains relatively small compared to the total of direct expenditure. In terms of the public expenditure ratio, indirect expenditure is noted to have increased by 72.44 percent while direct expenditure has only increased by 27.56 percent. This indicates that the budget is heavily aimed geared towards personnel and consumptive spending and that programs for community development are therefore still lacking. “We suggest that the executive branch of the house of representatives pay more attention to increases in direct expenditure such as capital expenditure that have gradually become a priority ,before designing the budget for other expenditures,” he explained. MARIANA, Brazil - Rescuers will spend a fourth day Sunday scouring for survivors beneath an avalanche of mud and mining sludge that buried a village in southeast Brazil, killing at least two people and leaving 28 missing. Hundreds of firefighters, soldiers and civil defense workers are frantically combing through the viscous mass that swallowed everything in its path for signs of life. The increasingly desperate search was suspended at dusk Saturday because “it is a high-risk area that is difficult to access,” said Duarte Goncalves Junior, mayor of the nearby city of Mariana. The tragedy occurred when waste reservoirs at the partly Australian-owned Samarco iron ore mine burst open, unleashing a sea of muck that flattened the nearby
village of Bento Rodrigues on Thursday. Since then, the tidal wave of sludge has continued its destructive advance, leveling a neighborhood and the main plaza in the town of Barra Longa, 60 kilometers (35 miles) away, but causing no loss of life there, a spokesman for the mayor’s office told AFP. The cascade of debris began with the collapse of a dike at a reservoir holding mining waste, which spilled into an adjoining valley. A short time later, a water reservoir broke, and the mass of liquid sludge swept over Bento Rodrigues. “There was a horrible noise and we saw the mud approaching. We ran for it. It is a miracle that we are still alive,” said Valeria de Souza, 20, with a baby in her arms and tears in her eyes.
But not everyone was so lucky and families of the missing were desperately seeking news of their loved ones, amid widely disparate official information. Authorities have given contradictory tolls of the dead and missing in and around Bento Rodrigues, which has a population of about 620. The head of Mariana’s firefighting force, Adao Severino Junior, had said that there were at least 17 dead, adding to the confusion. But the official toll was later revised to at least two dead and 28 missing, said Goncalves Junior. Mining giant BHP Billiton, joint owners of the mine with the Brazilian company Vale, said it was offering support. “Words cannot describe the impact of this tragedy on the employees and contractors of Samarco,

Those are just a few examples of how conventions and conferences take advantage of Orlando, Florida’s theme parks when they hold their meetings there. The parks are obviously a big attraction for families, but those rides aren’t just for kids: Orlando is also a very popular destination for conferences, conventions and other types of business travel. While most of the 62 million people who visited Orlando in 2014
were leisure travelers, the city is also the No. 1 destination for meetings, including 5 million convention delegates annually, according to Visit Orlando CEO George Aguel. Business travelers find two ways to enjoy the parks and other attractions. Some come in a few days early or stay a few days later, often bringing their families along to enjoy time at the parks. Since the business traveler’s plane fare is already paid for, that makes the
trip that much cheaper. Hotels will usually extend conference room rates for attendees who want to stay a couple of days longer, Aguel said. DUBAI — It will soon be possible to watch the sun rise over Dubai from the world’s tallest building. The Burj Khalifa announced Thursday it is selling tickets on the United Arab Emirates’ weekend of Friday and Saturday for sunrise viewings. The building’s management says the sessions start from 5:30 a.m. with viewings every 30 minutes on the 124th floor until 8 a.m. Weekend viewings previously started from 8:30 a.m. Tickets are 125 dirhams ($34) for adults and 95 dirhams ($26) for children ages 4 to 12. “This is an encouraging trend for tourism in Bali that the economic growth is still conducive, and increasing number of British tourists are travelling to Bali,” Bali tourism observer Made Sudana stated. Based on the list of foreign tourist arrivals to Bali, 119,839 British tourists directly arrived in Bali in the January-September 2015 period. The number increased by 25.29 percent compared to 95,652 tourists noted in the same period last year. He admitted that foreign tourists, predominantly Australian, Chinese, and Japanese, visited Bali.
“However, the number of travelers from Europe has started to increase,” he pointed out. Based on information provided by the Bali Government Tourism Office, Britain was placed fifth in the list of foreign tourist arrivals to Bali and constituted about four percent of the 2.9 million tourists visiting Bali during this period. From the European region, most tourists arrived in Bali from Britain followed by France, Germany, and the Netherlands. A total of 622,486 tourist arrivals were recorded from the European region in the January-

September 2015 period. As many as 99,851 French tourist arrivals were recorded followed by Germany, with 89,190 tourists, and the Netherlands, with 62,015 travelers during the same period. The number of Germans visiting Dewata Island grew by 13.27 percent compared to only 78,744 people recorded in 2014. However, tourist arrivals from the Netherlands grew 7.36 percent of only 57,761 visitors earlier recorded. Based on Sudana’s opinion, tourism growth in Bali is the result of hard work of the government and other tourism agencies through active promotion of its tourism by holding art performances and participating in various exhibitions in Europe. According to Lanus, it is normal that foreigners end up managing hotels and restaurants, given that that the hospitality and restaurant industry came from the west. But letting foreigners control agriculture and exploit the potential of villages, is a big problem and we are already seeing this happen. Many coffee, vegetables, local fruits and coconut oil businesses are already in the hands of foreigner businesses operating in Bali. Balinese youth therefor need to learn about the potential to develop businesses based on Bali’s resources. Sugi Linus who founded the Hanacaraka Institute says that village and hamlet youth organizations need to keep up with the times. Sekaa taruna or customary village youth clubs need to get their members ready for the job market. “Kite and ogoh-ogoh (papier mâché demons) competitions are good but just imagine if this creative energy was put towards developing rural businesses,” he said. If Balinese youth start taking advantage of local meeting halls as venues for training in entrepreneurship and the like, this generation
will be hard to beat. “Balinese youth need to unite” he said. Village and hamlet meeting halls serves as strongholds of the culture an the economy and village credit agencies (LPD) for example, could provide capital to start businesses. Balinese youth seem to fogey about these options with many choosing instead to work for the tourism sector for a low wage. “By developing businesses and developing our villages, we will become formidable hosts,” explained Lanus. Balinese youth, he added, are certainly capable but must be diligent about reading and opening their horizons. “Young people need to read all the treasures found in palm- leaf manuscripts and be ready to learn about to truly become balances, instead of just reading Facebook,” he said, adding that young Balinese end up trying to imitate the lifestyle of foreign travellers and have, in the process themselves become estranged from Balinese culture, though their income remains local. Lanus urges the young people of Bali to come back to their roots and to maintain the local mindset, eat local foods and dare to live close to nature. According to Lanus, Balinese is more than just a label -it means to be rooted in local wisdom, yet so
many young people have forgotten and think that foreign cultures are more advanced. In fact Balinese wisdom has a lot of insight into

Cultural adaptation must not change character
ACCULTURATION to the impacts of modernization should not mean that Balinese people loose their identity. Balinese characteristics need to remain inherent in Balinese people and upholding cultural customs needs to remain a commitment that is inherited. But how is this to be done? According to Rector of the Hindu Dharma Institute (IHDN) Denpasar, Prof. Dr. I Nengah Duija Balinese youth are indeed facing many challenges related to escorting Bali into the future. Duija said that currently there are five public responses to the influx of external cultures. They are: immediately adopting external culture, slowly adapting or filtering them, encouraging Balinese culture, revitalizing or reviving the old aspects of the culture and going up against external culture by giving no space for them to have any impact. “Balinese people tend to respond
to the onslaught of various cultural values from other places, by adopting them. In the long run, this will mean profond changes to Balinese culture,” said Duija who stressed that by slowly adapting to other values, this could also mean that Balinese people loose touch with their own culture altogether. “Obviously, we are worried about this. Balinese identity depends on strengthening and reinforcement of religious and cultural customs in the face of so much external influence”. Duija points out that focus needs to be centred on certain aspects of life that should be
based on Balinese cultural values. When a cultural concept changes, he said, the orientation of values also changes. Balinese society at large has already undergone significant psychological changes with values shifting in terms of modes of consumption, lifestyle, household habits and social relationships. Made Suardana, manager of a four-star hotel in Bali hopes that despite the onslaught of modernization and external cultural influences that Balinese people will remain aware. The younger generations as the successors of Balinese culture, need to fortify themselves against these influences so that they can maintain Bali. “As Balinese people, we should be proud to be embody our culture. This can be start with small things such as speaking Balinese and teaching our kids to speak it too,” he advised.
“Nowadays, people are sometimes ashamed of teaching their children to speak Balinese, especially in urban areas,” he said. Moreover, continued Suardana, Balinese people have attributes that should be maintained as part of their identity. “We should be proud to have a first name like Wayan, Made, Nyoman, Ketut and others for example,” he said. Living according to customary manners that have become well known the world over should also continue as long as it does not burden social life. We should not let our next generation be afraid that customary rules are burdensome. According to Suardana, in harmony with the changing times and the face of modernization, our customs should not prevent us from earning a living. “All must
work in harmony because without culture and customs, Bali will mean nothing. So, the next generations should not be afraid of competing and never say that Balinese customs are complicated,” he said. Kadek Agus Mulyawan, the owner of PT Aura International, said that basically many Balinese people are very capable but that they need the support of the local government in ensuring that Balinese people are given priority. When asked whether the younger generation can preserve Balinese ways of life, Agus who is also a lawyer admitted that he is still optimistic. “The younger generation of Bali can still escort Balinese culture into the futur. To that end, the attitudes and behaviour of the next generation of Balinese people, should be safeguarded,” he advised. (rin/rah)

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

LOS ANGELES — “By the Sea” is a very personal film for Angelina Jolie Pitt — and not just because it reunites her onscreen with her husband, Brad Pitt. It’s not even because she wrote, directed, produced and stars in the film. “By the Sea” is personal because it was inspired by the grief of losing her mother in 2007, Jolie Pitt said Thursday at the film’s premiere, AFI Fest’s openingnight gala at Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theatre. She started writing when she was missing her mother, without knowing exactly what she was creating.

Only this time, the actors relied on the strength of their real-life relationship to do it. “It’s really no different than trying to get the kids to bed at night,” Pitt said.” I mean, you know, it’s a tag team, Ultimate Wrestling kind of endeavor. And here on set, again, we’re working together and solving problems and making the thing work and figuring it out. And there’s just a great collaboration. She’s just, she’s my wife.” As for being directed by his spouse? “She’s very decisive. She’s really intuitive,” Pitt said. “Her instincts are really good with stories. of Bali,” he advised. Lanus who often speaks at international youth seminars, also believes that in order to remain competitive, young people in Bali need to seize employment opportunities in Bali, have the courage to open businesses in their villages and to become suppliers for the growing needs of the tourism industry. “Entrepreneur-
