The woman dialed 911 to report the sexual assault had occurred when the bus was parked at a shopping center in Auburn, which is less than 20 miles (32 km) south of Seattle, local police said in a statement. Nelly, best-known for the hit songs “Ride Wit Me,” “Hot in Herre” and “Dilemma,” performed at an amphitheater in Auburn on Friday night as part of a tour with
country pop group Florida Georgia Line. Patrol officers investigated the woman’s report, and Nelly was arrested before dawn, Auburn police said in the statement. He was booked into the South Correctional Entity Regional Jail in Des Moines, Washington, on suspicion of sexual assault. Auburn police had no further details to release, the statement
said. Scott Rosenblum, Nelly’s attorney, said Saturday night that his client had been released from jail. “Nelly is the victim of a completely fabricated allegation,” Rosenblum said in statement provided to Reuters. “I am confident once this scurrilous accusation is thoroughly investigated, there will be no charges.” (rtr)

Thousands protest in Barcelona against Catalan independence
BARCELONA - Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Catalonia’s capital Barcelona on Sunday to express their opposition to any declaration of independence from Spain, showing how divided the region is on the issue. The protesters rallied in central Barcelona, waving Spanish and Catalan flags and banners saying “Catalonia is Spain” and “Together we are stronger”, as politicians on both sides hardened their positions in the country’s worst political crisis for decades. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said on Saturday he would not rule out removing Catalonia’s government and calling a fresh local election if it claimed independence, as well as suspending the region’s existing autonomous status. The stark warning came days before Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont is expected to address the region’s parliament, on Tuesday, when he could unilaterally declare independence. “We feel both Catalan and Spanish,” Araceli Ponze, 72, said as she rallied in Barcelona. “We are facing a tremendous unknown. We will see what happens this week but we have to speak out very loudly
so they know what we want.” The wealthy northeastern region of 7.5 million people, which has its own language and culture, held an independence referendum on Oct. 1 in defiance of a Spanish court ban. More than 90 percent of the 2.3 million people who voted backed secession, according to Catalan officials. But that turnout represented only 43 percent of the region’s 5.3 million eligible voters as many opponents of independence stayed away. The Spanish government sent thousands of national police into the region to prevent the vote. About 900 people were injured when officers fired rubber
bullets and charged crowds with truncheons in scenes that shocked Spain and the world, and dramatically escalated the dispute. Losing Catalonia is almost unthinkable for the Spanish government. It would deprive Spain of about 16 percent of its people, a fifth of its economic output and more than a quarter of its exports. Catalonia is also the top destination for foreign tourists, attracting about a quarter of Spain’s total. The political stand-off has pushed banks and companies to move their headquarters outside Catalonia. Concern is growing in EU capitals about the impact of the crisis on the
Spanish economy, the fourth largest in the euro zone, and on possible spillovers to other economies. Some European officials are also worried that any softening in Spain’s stance towards Catalan independence could fuel secessionist feelings among other groups in Europe such as Belgium’s Flemings and Italy’s Lombards.
‘DRASTIC SOLUTIONS’ The demonstration in Barcelona was organised by the anti-independence group Catalan Civil Society under the slogan “Let’s recover our senses” to mobilise what it believes is a “silent majority” of citizens in Catalonia who oppose independence. “The people who have come to demonstrate don’t feel Catalan so much as Spanish,” said 40-year-old engineer Raul Briones, wearing a Spanish national soccer team shirt. “We like how
things have been up until now and want to go on like this.” It was a second day of protests after tens of thousands of people gathered in 50 cities across Spain on Saturday, some defending Spain’s national unity and others dressed in white and calling for talks to defuse the crisis. Those evacuated from Mt. Agung hope to be employed
THOUSANDS of residents of Karangasem who have been evacuated to Buleleng must still deal with the needs of daily life although must of them have lost their means of earning a living. For now, their families must rely on the austere provisions offered at eh evacuation sites. Many evacuees hope to find work while they wait for the Mt. Agung to be declared safe, so that they can provide for their families.
Buleleng is currently accommodating approximately 22,000 refugees from Ban hamlet, Dukuh, Kubu, most of whom are staying in the sub-district of Tejakula for the time being. Others are staying in Kubutambahan, Sukasada, Buleleng and in Gerokgak. Some people are staying with relatives, but most are living in public facilities provided by the government. Since they were evacuated on September 22nd, most of the evacuees have had little to nothing to do. A few men have been going back to their village each morning to care for the livestock that they left behind. In the afternoon, they retunr to their the evacuation post to be with their wives, children and other relatives. One 60 year old resident of Bonyoh hamlet named Ketut Susup, when met in a tent at Les village on Saturday (Oct. 7) explained that since he was evacuated from his village he has been resigned to rely on the food and assistance provided by the government to provide for his family. Susup had been working in construction before he was evacuated by now he and his 40 year old wife Wayan Ketil are at a loss about how to provide for the other needs of their family. “Since we were evacuated I have not been doing very much and the few supplies that I brought with me have run thing. The government is indeed providing for our basic needs but my money has now run out as
I am not working. I don’t know what to give to my family”, he said. Susup is therefor hoping to work in construction near the evacuation site while he waits to return home. He has not however shared this intention with the evacuation post officers. “ Hopefully I will be offered work, but no one is facilitating the evacuees. If only there was a job offer, I would take it so that I am not just sitting around and can earn an income for m living costs” he explained. Another evacuee from Bonyoh hamlet, 26 year old Komang Ariyani expressed a similar frustration. Since she was evacuated to Buleleng she has just been sitting around with her husband and children. She does not know where to go to find work or what she should do. She is still hopeful that someone will offer work to her and the other women at the evacuation post who are ready to work. She is eager to earn some money to meet her daily needs. “I just sit around, bath my children and make coffee for my husband. Actually I want to work but I do not know where to go or what to do. Hopefully someone will give me a job so that there is additional income and I don’t have to just rely on the government assistance” she said. Headman of Ban, Wayan Pontag, said many residents of Ban work as breeders, construction workers and bamboo craftsmen. He therefor hopes that this expertise can be put to use while they are away from home too. He added that he will cooperate with the government at the evacuation post to see about empowering the residents of his village by providing them with work. “Many of our residents have skills and hopefully there are some people who can give them a job using theses skills. We facilitate the evacuees in finding work so they can meet the living costs for their families” he added. (mud)

Despite evacuations, creative economy still rolling
SEMARAPURA - Thousands of residents of Karangasem are still living in evacuation posts in the district of Klungkung after having been evacuated from MT. Agung two weeks ago. The creativity that many formally used in their hometowns to earn a living is still being put to use. Many evacuees are making various types of crafts that are being sold to provide for their daily needs. Evacuess at Griya Cucukan hamlet, Selat, Klungkung from Muncan village, Selat, Karangasem, are make bamboo lumpian that are used to place offerings. The artisans can produce about ten a day and resellers have been coming around to buy them. “ Every two days there is an order for 40 pieces”, said evacuee Desak Ayu Sugiantini, on Saturday (Oct. 7).
We have been making these crafts for years and are selling them for just IDR 5,000. Sales have been good so it provides a little extra income. “Well, there is good income that can be used to buy side dishes”, said Sugiantini. Sugiantini and her husband Dewa Komang Suda Pertama work together to make these crafts with materials that she brought with her from her village. “Thankfully, we still have work” she said. This mother of two added that she also makes porosan an element of offerings, that also sell quite well. Other evacuees are carving wood. Nyoman Nadiarta for example is working on an order from Manikaji, Bangli along with several other evacuees. “This timber was brought from our village. Now we carve so we are not left behind”, he said. (kmb45)
Maintaining sanctity of Mount Agung, climbing tours must be shut down
Mount Agung is Bali’s largest and most sacred mountain and some fear that it is being spiritually polluted. By prohibiting climbing tours on Mt. Agung, the sanctity of the mountain can be easily maintained said Mangku Sueca recently. According to Mangku Sueca Mount Agung is becoming spiritually tarnished by people committing taboos when they climb the mountain. Climbing the mountain while menstruating, using inappropriate or obscene language are amongst the behaviours that are considered to have sullied the sanctity of the mountain. Mangku Sueca thinks that is will be difficult to maintain the sanctity of Mount Agung if there are still climbing tours. “To maintain the sanctity of Mount Agung, guests should not be allowed to climb. The climbing tours must be closed because all this time many climbers are impure. There was a woman who climbed to the top even though she was menstruating not to mention the other negative things that have been committed by climbers on the summit. Mount Agug is tarnished by such things and will remain spiritually impure if we allow this”, said Sueca.
He added that relevant agencies should discuss the possibility of closing the mountain to climbers. He also said that climbing guides also need to be taken into consideration so they do not loose their livelihood. “This needs to be well managed”, he said. “Mount Agung tour guides should be considered, they should not loose their means of earning a living if the tours are shut down. They should be given other options for earning a living or placed according to their abilities” said Mangku Sueca. When asked about tourists having being prohibited from visiting Besakih temple since the management board was established, Mangku Sueca said that even before the management board was formed, tourists were not allowed to go into the temple unless it was for worship. He added that guests sometimes violate this prohibition and try to go inside even though they have been prohibited. “This must be respected by tourists and they should follow the rules because the temple is sacred So, anyone entering the tempe in an impure condition will tarnish the sanctity of the temple. As a place of worship it must be well maintained” said Mangku Sueca. (nan)

Drake Well Museum
PENNSYLVANIA - The Drake Well Museum and Park is a museum that interprets the birth of the American oil industry in 1859 by “Colonel” Edwin Drake along the banks of Oil Creek in Cherrytree Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania in the United States. The museum collects and preserves related artifacts. The reconstructed Drake Well demonstrates the first practical use of salt drilling techniques for the extraction of petroleum through an oil well. A historic site, the museum is located in Cherrytree Township, 3 miles (4.8 km) south of Titusville on Drake Well Road, situated between Pennsylvania Routes 8 and 27. The museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. The site features a reconstruction of the oil well drilled by “Colonel” Edwin Drake and working oil field equipment. The museum includes indoor and outdoor exhibits and houses a library of over 2,500 titles, over 1,000 cubic feet (28 m3) of manuscript material and a photographic collection with over 10,800 images. Programs include the Fall Gas-Up engine show, a spring Heritage Lecture Series, Heritage School Tours, and the Nitroglycerine Show. Visitor services include orientation film, guided tours, a museum store and more. Nearby attractions are Oil Creek State Park and the Oil Creek and Titusville Railroad. AMLAPURA — Karangasem residents living in the red zone has evacuated for two weeks. To fill in their spare time during the life in refugee camp, they perform various activities. For instance, a refugee from Batumadeg in her refugee camp at Segah hamlet, Nongan, Rendang, fills her spare time by making canang to say prayers around the refugee camp area and Puseh Temple nearby. One of the refugees, Mangku Nengah Genek, stated that during her stay in the refugee camp she with other refugees makes canang (oblation) almost every day to be used for worship in the refugee camp and Puseh Temple nearby. This canang making is done by housewives with the help of their children. “Every day, we make quite a lot of canang for prayer. They are not for sale, but for daily prayers,” she said. She explained that praying in the refuge is indeed done every day. It is meant to ask for salvation while in the refuge while the situation of Mount Agung currently remains in warning status. “Praying is mandatory, especially if we borrow a shelter at other’s village, including saying prayers at the local Puseh Temple. 236 refugees belonging to safe zone return home
DENPASAR - Some Karangasem residents evacuating to Denpasar due to the warning status of Mount Agung have returned to their hometown. Of the total 14,746 refugees in the city of Denpasar, 236 people already returned home on Saturday (Oct. 7) facilitated by Denpasar municipality. Their return is inseparable from the condition of their village having been declared to be in safe zone. Since the appeal of evacuating came into effect, the Denpasar municipality took a swift measure by providing some points of public posts and independent posts of the Denpasar community. After several days of evacuating at some points like refugee post on Jalan Danau Tempe, Jalan Gurita, Jalan Sutomo, Kompyang Sujana Stadium post, and Peguyangan urban village post, the refugees chose to return home because they considered the condition of their home village has been safe. DENPASAR — Joint team of the Directorate of Narcotic Criminal Investigation and CTOT Taskforce of Bali Police arrested three other drug dealers at two different locations on Friday (Oct. 6). The suspect with the initials IGS, 37, with a woman, TE, 35, was arrested at KFC Kebo Iwa parking area on Jalan Gatot Subroto Barat, Denpasar. In the meantime, RP, 23, was arrested in Pondok 828 on Jalan Raya Pemogan, South Denpasar. The evidence of 1.3 kg narcotic in the form of crystal meth was seized in the arrest. “Disclosure of this big case is due to hard work of the Narcotic Criminal Investigation and CTOC of Bali Police team. Of course, it is also due to
the information from the public,” said Spokesperson of Bali Police, Hengky Widjaja, on Saturday (Oct. 7). Hengky revealed the arrest of the suspects IGS and TE was carried out around 20:30. BEIRUT - Turkish military vehicles crossed the Syrian border into Idlib on Sunday, a local resident and a local rebel said, after Ankara announced an operation by rebel groups in the area, which is controlled by rival jihadist alliance Tahrir al-Sham. BEIRUT - Iran warned the United States against designating its Revolutionary Guards Corp as a terrorist group and said U.S. regional military bases would be at risk if further sanctions were passed. The warning came after the White House said on Friday that President Donald Trump would announce new U.S. responses to Iran’s missile tests, support for “terrorism” and cyber operations as part of his new Iran strategy. “As we’ve announced in the past, if America’s new law for sanctions is passed, this country will have to move their regional bases outside the 2,000 km range of Iran’s missiles,” Guards’ commander Mohammad Ali Jafari said, according to state media. Jafari also said that additional sanctions would end the chances for future dialogue with the United States, according to state media, and issued a stark warning to American troops. “If the news is correct about the stupidity of the American government in considering the Revolutionary Guards a terrorist group, then the Revolutionary Guards will consider the American army to be like Islamic State all around the world particularly in the Middle East,” Jafari said. The Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) are Iran’s most powerful internal and external security force. The Quds Force, the IRGC’s foreign espionage and paramilitary wing, and individuals and entities associated with the IRGC are on the US list of foreign terrorist organisations, but the organisation as a whole is not. Iran sees the Sunni Muslim militants of Islamic State as an existential threat to the Islamic Republic where the majority of the

KHARTOUM - Sudan’s economy is headed towards gradual recovery, Finance Minister Mohamed Othman Rukabi said at a forum on Saturday, just one day after the US lifted its 20-year-old economic sanctions opening the way for critical economic reforms and badly needed investment. However, before Kuningan the Hindus do Penampahan ceremony marked by the slaughter of animals for offerings. This Penampahan day is preparation for carrying out the Kuningan. Chairman of the Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI) of Bali Chapter, Prof. Dr. I Gusti Ngurah Sudiana, said that Kuningan Day is believed to be the coming down of gods and goddesses to this mundane world. Then, there is the term angwehaken jagat ring para manusa kabeh meaning that gods and goddess come down to earth to give endowments to the whole mankind. “Celebration of Kuningan is conducted half a day to dedicate ter (an arrow), endongan and tamiang,” he said. Endongan signifies supplies containing food offered to the gods and goddesses that will return to nirvana. However, the main human provision in living the life is knowledge and devotion (jnana) along with the most powerful weapon namely the peace of mind.

According to the elders, they have diverse manifestations according to the place and position. There is manifestation as Jero Dukuh or elder figure, elephant, horse, tiger and other forms,” he said. Many people do not know that Tugun Karang is the gateway of psychical beings coming from psychical world to physical world. Spain’s PM says may use constitution to block Catalan independence
MADRID - Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said on Saturday he would not rule out using the constitutional powers to remove Catalonia’s autonomous status if it claimed independence as tens of thousands took to the streets to call for talks.
The wealthy northeastern region of Catalonia, with its own language and culture, held a referendum on Oct. 1 on independence, in defiance of the Spanish constitutional court which had ruled the vote illegal. Until now, Rajoy has remained vague on whether he would use article 155, the so-called nuclear option, of the constitution which enables him to sack the regional government and call a fresh local election. In an interview with Spanish newspaper El Pais on Saturday Rajoy was asked if he was ready to trigger the article 155 of the constitution, and said: “I don’t rule out absolutely anything that is within the law ... Indonesia police detain 51 men in Jakarta “gay spa” raid JAKARTA - Indonesian police detained 51 men including several foreigners in a raid on what authorities described as a “gay spa” in Jakarta late on Friday, and some could face up to six years in prison under pornography and prostitution laws.
The arrests are the latest in a spate of high-profile police actions against gay clubs and parties in Indonesia this year that have called the country’s reputation for tolerance into question. With the exception of the ultraconservative Aceh province in northern Sumatra, where Islamic law is enforced and two men were publicly flogged in May for gay
sex, homosexuality is not criminalised in Indonesia, home to the world’s largest Muslim population. Among those detained at the spa in Central Jakarta on Friday were four Chinese nationals, a Singaporean, one Thai national, one Malaysian, and one Dutchman, although none of the foreigners would be charged, Jakarta Police spokesman Argo Yuwono told Reuters on Saturday. When asked about what the people in the spa were doing at the time of the raid, Yuwono noted that it was dark at the time. “LGBT is clearly between men and men or same-sex relationships. Male prostitution,” Yuwono said, without clarifying further. He said those charged could face up to six
years in prison under Indonesia’s pornography law. “There’s a cashier, the manager there and also those providing facilities like towels and other things,” he said. Activists say police targeting of consensual gay sex has shone a light on discrimination and harassment in the world’s third-largest democracy. Andreas Harsono, a Jakartabased researcher for Human Rights Watch, referred to a pattern of discriminatory police action against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people in Indonesia. “If they raided (this club) because they are gay, it is abusive, it is abuse of power,” he said,
adding that there is no law against homosexuality as long as relationships are consensual. “If there is no victim, there is no crime,” he said. Police often used to the pornography law to “criminalise” such cases, but that law itself is also problematic, Harsono said, noting that people could be charged if they had pornographic material on a cell phone. “Just imagine if every person in Indonesia had their cell phones checked, how many hundred million people would go to jail?” In May, officers detained 141 men in a raid on the Atlantis sauna, accusing them of involvement in a gay prostitution ring in a part of Jakarta that is also home to many heterosexual “spas”. Langkat police arrest man carrying 18 kg of marijuana
LANGKAT - During a raid in Tangkahan Durian of West Brandan, the Pangkalan Brandan police in Langkat, North Sumatra, arrested a man from Aceh carrying 18 kilograms (kg) of marijuana to be delivered to East Java. The suspect is identified as Eko alias EH, a 36-year-old resident of Kedunggalar Sub-district, Ngawi, East Java, Pangkalan Brandan Police Chief Adjunct Commissioner J. M. Sitompul noted here, Saturday.
Sitompul said the suspect was arrested aboard a bus departing from Aceh. He added that the police stopped the bus and after checking the belongings of all passengers found three kg of marijuana in his backpack. “After further probing the suspect, he admitted to have another 15 packages or 15 kg of marijuana in a box, kept in the bus luggage compartment,” he remarked. Sitompul said, the suspect confessed that the marijuana was to be

sent to East Java, and as a courier, he would receive Rp18 million once the drugs were delivered. “He claimed that he would be paid Rp1 million for each package he delivered, but the police doubted his claim,” he noted, adding that the police had found more than Rp20 million in his bank account. SUZUKA - Sebastian Vettel saw his Formula One title hopes all but disappear on Sunday after the Ferrari driver retired from the Japanese Grand Prix with engine problems. The German retired on the fourth lap at Suzuka after his mechanics had worked feverishly on the starting grid to try and fix his car. Vettel had already been 34 points behind championship leader Lewis Hamilton, with the Mercedes driver then winning from pole position to stretch his overall lead to 59 with four races remaining. “Of course it hurts, and we’re all disappointed,” the four times world champion, who hugged his mechanics and gave the crowd a quick wave after returning to the pits, told television reporters. “Now I think we just have to get back, get some rest and go flat out for the last four races and see what happens.” Vettel had lined up alongside Hamilton on the front row at a sunny Suzuka, hoping the hotter conditions could handicap the Briton after he proved unbeatable in Saturday’s cooler qualifying. But all was clearly not well, with Ferrari mechanics swarming around the car as the seconds ticked away. “I think it was a small problem causing a big issue. We didn’t have power already on the formation lap, no power at the start and then the first couple of laps already,” he said. “We tried to reset everything to try and get the power back but we couldn’t. It looks like there was a problem with the spark plug. “Not much we could have done. SUZUKA - Sebastian Vettel saw his Formula One title hopes all but disappear on Sunday after the Ferrari driver retired from the Japanese Grand Prix with engine problems. The German retired on the fourth lap at Suzuka after his mechanics had worked feverishly on the starting grid to try and fix his car. Vettel had already been 34 points behind championship leader Lewis Hamilton, with the Mercedes driver then winning from pole position to stretch his overall lead to 59 with four races remaining. “Of course it hurts, and we’re all disappointed,” the four times world champion, who hugged his mechanics and gave the crowd a quick wave after returning to the pits, told television reporters. “Now I think we just have to get back, get some rest and go flat out for the last four races and see what happens.” Vettel had lined up alongside Hamilton on the front row at a sunny Suzuka, hoping the hotter conditions could handicap the Briton after he proved unbeatable in Saturday’s cooler qualifying. But all was clearly not well, with Ferrari mechanics swarming around the car as the seconds ticked away. “I think it was a small problem causing a big issue. We didn’t have power already on the formation lap, no power at the start and then the first couple of laps already,” he said. “We tried to reset everything to try and get the power back but we couldn’t. It looks like there was a problem with the spark plug. “Not much we could have done. Spain’s PM says may use constitution to block Catalan independence
MADRID - Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said on Saturday he would not rule out using the constitutional powers to remove Catalonia’s autonomous status if it claimed independence as tens of thousands took to the streets to call for talks.
The wealthy northeastern region of Catalonia, with its own language and culture, held a referendum on Oct. 1 on independence, in defiance of the Spanish constitutional court which had ruled the vote illegal. Until now, Rajoy has remained vague on whether he would use article 155, the so-called nuclear option, of the constitution which enables him to sack the regional government and call a fresh local election. In an interview with Spanish newspaper El Pais on Saturday Rajoy was asked if he was ready to trigger the article 155 of the constitution, and said: “I don’t rule out absolutely anything that is within the law ... Indonesia police detain 51 men in Jakarta “gay spa” raid JAKARTA - Indonesian police detained 51 men including several foreigners in a raid on what authorities described as a “gay spa” in Jakarta late on Friday, and some could face up to six years in prison under pornography and prostitution laws.
The arrests are the latest in a spate of high-profile police actions against gay clubs and parties in Indonesia this year that have called the country’s reputation for tolerance into question. With the exception of the ultraconservative Aceh province in northern Sumatra, where Islamic law is enforced and two men were publicly flogged in May for gay
sex, homosexuality is not criminalised in Indonesia, home to the world’s largest Muslim population. Among those detained at the spa in Central Jakarta on Friday were four Chinese nationals, a Singaporean, one Thai national, one Malaysian, and one Dutchman, although none of the foreigners would be charged, Jakarta Police spokesman Argo Yuwono told Reuters on Saturday. When asked about what the people in the spa were doing at the time of the raid, Yuwono noted that it was dark at the time. “LGBT is clearly between men and men or same-sex relationships. LANGKAT - During a raid in Tangkahan Durian of West Brandan, the Pangkalan Brandan police in Langkat, North Sumatra, arrested a man from Aceh carrying 18 kilograms (kg) of marijuana to be delivered to East Java. The suspect is identified as Eko alias EH, a 36-year-old resident of Kedunggalar Sub-district, Ngawi, East Java, Pangkalan Brandan Police Chief Adjunct Commissioner J. M. Sitompul noted here, Saturday.
Sitompul said the suspect was arrested aboard a bus departing from Aceh. He added that the police stopped the bus and after checking the belongings of all passengers found three kg of marijuana in his backpack. “After further probing the suspect, he admitted to have another 15 packages or 15 kg of marijuana in a box, kept in the bus luggage compartment,” he remarked. KHARTOUM - Sudan’s economy is headed towards gradual recovery, Finance Minister Mohamed Othman Rukabi said at a forum on Saturday, just one day after the US lifted its 20-year-old economic sanctions opening the way for critical economic reforms and badly needed investment. However, before Kuningan the Hindus do Penampahan ceremony marked by the slaughter of animals for offerings. This Penampahan day is preparation for carrying out the Kuningan. Chairman of the Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI) of Bali Chapter, Prof. Dr. I Gusti Ngurah Sudiana, said that Kuningan Day is believed to be the coming down of gods and goddesses to this mundane world. Then, there is the term angwehaken jagat ring para manusa kabeh meaning that gods and goddess come down to earth to give endowments to the whole mankind. “Celebration of Kuningan is conducted half a day to dedicate ter (an arrow), endongan and tamiang,” he said. Endongan signifies supplies containing food offered to the gods and goddesses that will return to nirvana. However, the main human provision in living the life is knowledge and devotion (jnana) along with the most powerful weapon namely the peace of mind.

Each sikut satak of home yard must have two kinds of shrine, namely the Pangulun Karang in the form of kemulan or three-

According to I Gusti Ketut Dalem, a permanent lecturer at the Dharma Duta Faculty of the IHDN Denpasar, Tugun Karang shrine is the abode of Ida Ratu Sedahan Panunggun Karang, in charge of security guard in the house compound. “Actually, he has existed before there are people taking advantage of the land area either intended for housing or moors. According to the elders, they have diverse manifestations according to the place and position. There is manifestation as Jero Dukuh or elder figure, elephant, horse, tiger and other forms,” he said. Many people do not know that Tugun Karang is the gateway of psychical beings coming from psychical world to physical world. DENPASAR — Joint team of the Directorate of Narcotic Criminal Investigation and CTOT Taskforce of Bali Police arrested three other drug dealers at two different locations on Friday (Oct. 6). The suspect with the initials IGS, 37, with a woman, TE, 35, was arrested at KFC Kebo Iwa parking area on Jalan Gatot Subroto Barat, Denpasar. In the meantime, RP, 23, was arrested in Pondok 828 on Jalan Raya Pemogan, South Denpasar. The evidence of 1.3 kg narcotic in the form of crystal meth was seized in the arrest. “Disclosure of this big case is due to hard work of the Narcotic Criminal Investigation and CTOC of Bali Police team. Of course, it is also due to
the information from the public,” said Spokesperson of Bali Police, Hengky Widjaja, on Saturday (Oct. 7). Hengky revealed the arrest of the suspects IGS and TE was carried out around 20:30. The perpetrators brought the crystal meth by hiding it in the Toyota Avanza van. Results of the search confiscated are 5 large packages and 227 small packages of crystal meth with total gross weight of 773.71 grams or 684.52 grams net, four handphone, two digital scales, two rolls of duct tape as well as one BCA saving book and BCA ATM card. “As planned, the narcotics will be circulated in the area of Denpasar,” he said. In the meantime, RP was arrested at 19:00. As the result of the search
in the suspect’s room, police confiscated six large crystal meth packages with gross weight of 603.91 grams or 599.41 grams net, 23 small packages of crystal meth with gross weight of 23.47 grams or 19.36 grams net, 2.21 grams of marijuana leaves, two pieces of green purple ecstasy, two electric scales, a masses, one crystal meth recap book, two handphones, three bundles of plastic clip, one clear insulating roll, scissors, a BCA ATM card and two spoons. “The suspect confessed to receive the narcotics package from someone with the initial B. Turkish military vehicles enter Syria’s Idlib -sources
BEIRUT - Turkish military vehicles crossed the Syrian border into Idlib on Sunday, a local resident and a local rebel said, after Ankara announced an operation by rebel groups in the area, which is controlled by rival jihadist alliance Tahrir al-Sham. Both sources said the vehicles travelled under escort from Tahrir al-Sham, whose fighters accompanied them along a road. However, the jihadists and the Turkish military had earlier exchanged fire in a nearby area. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday that Syrian rebels backed by Turkish forces would launch an operation in Idlib and warned that Turkey would not allow “a terrorist corridor” near its borders. The operation follows a deal between Turkey and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s allies Russia and Iran to impose a “de-escalation” zone in Idlib and surrounding areas to reduce warfare there, an agreement that did not include Tahrir al-Sham. BEIRUT - Iran warned the United States against designating its Revolutionary Guards Corp as a terrorist group and said U.S. regional military bases would be at risk if further sanctions were passed. The warning came after the White House said on Friday that President Donald Trump would announce new U.S. responses to Iran’s missile tests, support for “terrorism” and cyber operations as part of his new Iran strategy. “As we’ve announced in the past, if America’s new law for sanctions is passed, this country will have to move their regional bases outside the 2,000 km range of Iran’s missiles,” Guards’ commander Mohammad Ali Jafari said, according to state media. Jafari also said that additional sanctions would end the chances for future dialogue with the United States, according to state media, and issued a stark warning to American troops. “If the news is correct about the stupidity of the American government in considering the Revolutionary Guards a terrorist group, then the Revolutionary Guards will consider the American army to be like Islamic State all around the world particularly in the Middle East,” Jafari said. The Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) are Iran’s most powerful internal and external security force. The Quds Force, the IRGC’s foreign espionage and paramilitary wing, and individuals and entities associated with the IRGC are on the US list of foreign terrorist organisations, but the organisation as a whole is not. Iran sees the Sunni Muslim militants of Islamic State as an existential threat to the Islamic Republic where the majority of the
population are Shi’ites. On June 7, Islamic State claimed an attack on Tehran’s parliament and the mausoleum of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic, killing 18 people. Under the 2015 deal, Iran agreed to limit its disputed nuclear programme in return for the easing of economic sanctions. However, Trump is expected to announce soon that he will decertify the deal, a senior administration official has said, in a step that potentially could cause the accord to unravel. “The Americans should know that the Trump government’s stupid behavior with the nuclear deal will be used by the Islamic Republic as an opportunity to move ahead with its missile, regional and conventional defense programme,” Jafari said, according to state media. Drake Well Museum
PENNSYLVANIA - The Drake Well Museum and Park is a museum that interprets the birth of the American oil industry in 1859 by “Colonel” Edwin Drake along the banks of Oil Creek in Cherrytree Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania in the United States. The museum collects and preserves related artifacts. The reconstructed Drake Well demonstrates the first practical use of salt drilling techniques for the extraction of petroleum through an oil well. A historic site, the museum is located in Cherrytree Township, 3 miles (4.8 km) south of Titusville on Drake Well Road, situated between Pennsylvania Routes 8 and 27. The museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. The site features a reconstruction of the oil well drilled by “Colonel” Edwin Drake and working oil field equipment. AMLAPURA — Karangasem residents living in the red zone has evacuated for two weeks. To fill in their spare time during the life in refugee camp, they perform various activities. For instance, a refugee from Batumadeg in her refugee camp at Segah hamlet, Nongan, Rendang, fills her spare time by making canang to say prayers around the refugee camp area and Puseh Temple nearby. One of the refugees, Mangku Nengah Genek, stated that during her stay in the refugee camp she with other refugees makes canang (oblation) almost every day to be used for worship in the refugee camp and Puseh Temple nearby. This canang making is done by housewives with the help of their children. “Every day, we make quite a lot of canang for prayer. They are not for sale, but for daily prayers,” she said. She explained that praying in the refuge is indeed done every day. It is meant to ask for salvation while in the refuge while the situation of Mount Agung currently remains in warning status. “Praying is mandatory, especially if we borrow a shelter at other’s village, including saying prayers at the local Puseh Temple. So, we must say devotion,” she explained. (nan)

DENPASAR - Some Karangasem residents evacuating to Denpasar due to the warning status of Mount Agung have returned to their hometown. Of the total 14,746 refugees in the city of Denpasar, 236 people already returned home on Saturday (Oct. 7) facilitated by Denpasar municipality. Their return is inseparable from the condition of their village having been declared to be in safe zone. Since the appeal of evacuating came into effect, the Denpasar municipality took a swift measure by providing some points of public posts and independent posts of the Denpasar community. After several days of evacuating at some points like refugee post on Jalan Danau Tempe, Jalan Gurita, Jalan Sutomo, Kompyang Sujana Stadium post, and Peguyangan urban village post, the refugees chose to return home because they considered the condition of their home village has been safe. Attention and concern of Denpasar Mayor to the refugees is very visible. Amid his busyness as the Denpasar Mayor, I.B. Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra even makes a visit to the refugee camps and provides motivation for them. Associated with the homecoming of refugees, the government of Denpasar facilitates the residents wishing to return to their respective village. After their villages were declared to be in safe zone and the opening of public facilities in Karangasem become their reasons to return home for most refugees. Moreover, one of the refugees is pregnant. “They go home because their villages have been declared to be in safe zone and the facilities have been opened. We are here due to the instruction of the leadership and the mayor facilitates the residents wishing to return home,” said Sudarita, Coordinator of the Denpasar Municipal Central Post. In the meantime, one of the refugees, Ketut Agus, also decided to return home based on his own accord and daily condition during their evacuation in Denpasar is very comfortable. “This post is good, but I decide to return home because our area is declared safe and the facilities are opened,” he said. Those evacuated from Mt. Agung hope to be employed
THOUSANDS of residents of Karangasem who have been evacuated to Buleleng must still deal with the needs of daily life although must of them have lost their means of earning a living. For now, their families must rely on the austere provisions offered at eh evacuation sites. Many evacuees hope to find work while they wait for the Mt. Agung to be declared safe, so that they can provide for their families.
Buleleng is currently accommodating approximately 22,000 refugees from Ban hamlet, Dukuh, Kubu, most of whom are staying in the sub-district of Tejakula for the time being. Others are staying in Kubutambahan, Sukasada, Buleleng and in Gerokgak. Some people are staying with relatives, but most are living in public facilities provided by the government. Since they were evacuated on September 22nd, most of the evacuees have had little to nothing to do. A few men have been going back to their village each morning to care for the livestock that they left behind. In the afternoon, they retunr to their the evacuation post to be with their wives, children and other relatives. One 60 year old resident of Bonyoh hamlet named Ketut Susup, when met in a tent at Les village on Saturday (Oct. 7) explained that since he was evacuated from his village he has been resigned to rely on the food and assistance provided by the government to provide for his family. Susup had been working in construction before he was evacuated by now he and his 40 year old wife Wayan Ketil are at a loss about how to provide for the other needs of their family. “Since we were evacuated I have not been doing very much and the few supplies that I brought with me have run thing. The government is indeed providing for our basic needs but my money has now run out as
I am not working. I don’t know what to give to my family”, he said. Susup is therefor hoping to work in construction near the evacuation site while he waits to return home. He has not however shared this intention with the evacuation post officers. “ Hopefully I will be offered work, but no one is facilitating the evacuees. If only there was a job offer, I would take it so that I am not just sitting around and can earn an income for m living costs” he explained. Another evacuee from Bonyoh hamlet, 26 year old Komang Ariyani expressed a similar frustration. Since she was evacuated to Buleleng she has just been sitting around with her husband and children. She does not know where to go to find work or what she should do. She is still hopeful that someone will offer work to her and the other women at the evacuation post who are ready to work. She is eager to earn some money to meet her daily needs. “I just sit around, bath my children and make coffee for my husband. Actually I want to work but I do not know where to go or what to do. Hopefully someone will give me a job so that there is additional income and I don’t have to just rely on the government assistance” she said. Headman of Ban, Wayan Pontag, said many residents of Ban work as breeders, construction workers and bamboo craftsmen. He therefor hopes that this expertise can be put to use while they are away from home too. He added that he will cooperate with the government at the evacuation post to see about empowering the residents of his village by providing them with work. “Many of our residents have skills and hopefully there are some people who can give them a job using theses skills. We facilitate the evacuees in finding work so they can meet the living costs for their families” he added. (mud)

Despite evacuations, creative economy still rolling
SEMARAPURA - Thousands of residents of Karangasem are still living in evacuation posts in the district of Klungkung after having been evacuated from MT. Agung two weeks ago. The creativity that many formally used in their hometowns to earn a living is still being put to use. Many evacuees are making various types of crafts that are being sold to provide for their daily needs. Evacuess at Griya Cucukan hamlet, Selat, Klungkung from Muncan village, Selat, Karangasem, are make bamboo lumpian that are used to place offerings. The artisans can produce about ten a day and resellers have been coming around to buy them. “ Every two days there is an order for 40 pieces”, said evacuee Desak Ayu Sugiantini, on Saturday (Oct. 7).
We have been making these crafts for years and are selling them for just IDR 5,000. Sales have been good so it provides a little extra income. “Well, there is good income that can be used to buy side dishes”, said Sugiantini. Sugiantini and her husband Dewa Komang Suda Pertama work together to make these crafts with materials that she brought with her from her village. “Thankfully, we still have work” she said. This mother of two added that she also makes porosan an element of offerings, that also sell quite well. Other evacuees are carving wood. Nyoman Nadiarta for example is working on an order from Manikaji, Bangli along with several other evacuees. “This timber was brought from our village. Maintaining sanctity of Mount Agung, climbing tours must be shut down
Mount Agung is Bali’s largest and most sacred mountain and some fear that it is being spiritually polluted. By prohibiting climbing tours on Mt. Agung, the sanctity of the mountain can be easily maintained said Mangku Sueca recently. According to Mangku Sueca Mount Agung is becoming spiritually tarnished by people committing taboos when they climb the mountain. Climbing the mountain while menstruating, using inappropriate or obscene language are amongst the behaviours that are considered to have sullied the sanctity of the mountain. Mangku Sueca thinks that is will be difficult to maintain the sanctity of Mount Agung if there are still climbing tours. “To maintain the sanctity of Mount Agung, guests should not be allowed to climb. The climbing tours must be closed because all this time many climbers are impure. There was a woman who climbed to the top even though she was menstruating not to mention the other negative things that have been committed by climbers on the summit. Mount Agug is tarnished by such things and will remain spiritually impure if we allow this”, said Sueca.
He added that relevant agencies should discuss the possibility of closing the mountain to climbers. He also said that climbing guides also need to be taken into consideration so they do not loose their livelihood. “This needs to be well managed”, he said. “Mount Agung tour guides should be considered, they should not loose their means of earning a living if the tours are shut down. They should be given other options for earning a living or placed according to their abilities” said Mangku Sueca. When asked about tourists having being prohibited from visiting Besakih temple since the management board was established, Mangku Sueca said that even before the management board was formed, tourists were not allowed to go into the temple unless it was for worship. He added that guests sometimes violate this prohibition and try to go inside even though they have been prohibited. “This must be respected by tourists and they should follow the rules because the temple is sacred So, anyone entering the tempe in an impure condition will tarnish the sanctity of the temple. As a place of worship it must be well maintained” said Mangku Sueca. (nan)

The woman dialed 911 to report the sexual assault had occurred when the bus was parked at a shopping center in Auburn, which is less than 20 miles (32 km) south of Seattle, local police said in a statement. Nelly, best-known for the hit songs “Ride Wit Me,” “Hot in Herre” and “Dilemma,” performed at an amphitheater in Auburn on Friday night as part of a tour with
country pop group Florida Georgia Line. Patrol officers investigated the woman’s report, and Nelly was arrested before dawn, Auburn police said in the statement. He was booked into the South Correctional Entity Regional Jail in Des Moines, Washington, on suspicion of sexual assault. Auburn police had no further details to release, the statement
said. Scott Rosenblum, Nelly’s attorney, said Saturday night that his client had been released from jail. “Nelly is the victim of a completely fabricated allegation,” Rosenblum said in statement provided to Reuters. “I am confident once this scurrilous accusation is thoroughly investigated, there will be no charges.” (rtr)

Thousands protest in Barcelona against Catalan independence
BARCELONA - Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Catalonia’s capital Barcelona on Sunday to express their opposition to any declaration of independence from Spain, showing how divided the region is on the issue. The protesters rallied in central Barcelona, waving Spanish and Catalan flags and banners saying “Catalonia is Spain” and “Together we are stronger”, as politicians on both sides hardened their positions in the country’s worst political crisis for decades. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said on Saturday he would not rule out removing Catalonia’s government and calling a fresh local election if it claimed independence, as well as suspending the region’s existing autonomous status. The stark warning came days before Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont is expected to address the region’s parliament, on Tuesday, when he could unilaterally declare independence. “We feel both Catalan and Spanish,” Araceli Ponze, 72, said as she rallied in Barcelona. “We are facing a tremendous unknown. We will see what happens this week but we have to speak out very loudly
so they know what we want.” The wealthy northeastern region of 7.5 million people, which has its own language and culture, held an independence referendum on Oct. 1 in defiance of a Spanish court ban. More than 90 percent of the 2.3 million people who voted backed secession, according to Catalan officials. But that turnout represented only 43 percent of the region’s 5.3 million eligible voters as many opponents of independence stayed away. The Spanish government sent thousands of national police into the region to prevent the vote. About 900 people were injured when officers fired rubber
bullets and charged crowds with truncheons in scenes that shocked Spain and the world, and dramatically escalated the dispute. Losing Catalonia is almost unthinkable for the Spanish government. It would deprive Spain of about 16 percent of its people, a fifth of its economic output and more than a quarter of its exports. Catalonia is also the top destination for foreign tourists, attracting about a quarter of Spain’s total. The political stand-off has pushed banks and companies to move their headquarters outside Catalonia. Concern is growing in EU capitals about the impact of the crisis on the
Spanish economy, the fourth largest in the euro zone, and on possible spillovers to other economies. Some European officials are also worried that any softening in Spain’s stance towards Catalan independence could fuel secessionist feelings among other groups in Europe such as Belgium’s Flemings and Italy’s Lombards.
‘DRASTIC SOLUTIONS’ The demonstration in Barcelona was organised by the anti-independence group Catalan Civil Society under the slogan “Let’s recover our senses” to mobilise what it believes is a “silent majority” of citizens in Catalonia who oppose independence. “The people who have come to demonstrate don’t feel Catalan so much as Spanish,” said 40-year-old engineer Raul Briones, wearing a Spanish national soccer team shirt. “We like how
things have been up until now and want to go on like this.” It was a second day of protests after tens of thousands of people gathered in 50 cities across Spain on Saturday, some defending Spain’s national unity and others dressed in white and calling for talks to defuse the crisis.
