Cage was named Best Global Actor in Motion Pictures at China’s Huading Awards on Monday night. Nicole Kidman, honored as best global film actress, wore a black Prada dress while she walked the red carpet in Macau alongside Hong Kong legend and pal Jackie Chan. Cage has been shooting “Outcast” in Hong Kong with Hayden Christensen. “I believe in the genius loci of a place, the genie of the place is what I call it. NEW YORK — The foreign language Oscar competition this year will be wider than it ever has been before. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Monday that a record 73 countries, plus Hong Kong, Taiwan and the Palestinian territories, have submitted their entries to the Academy Awards. The acclaimed “Wadjda” from Saudi Arabia, about an 11-year-old girl’s quest to obtain a bicycle, is the country’s first submission. “All God’s Children” is also the first entry from Moldova. Montenegro, previously a part of Yugoslavia, submitted a film for the first time as an independent country: “Ace of Spades.” Entries are restricted to one per country and some nations’ choices were at odds with the film community. China opted to submit the patriotic drama “Back to 1942” rather than Jia Zhang-ke’s festival favorite “A Touch of Sin.” The film, which depicts inequality in contemporary China, won best screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Leaders also expressed their commitment to fighting protectionism, which hinders the world’s economic trade and growth. “We have agreed to extend our commitment till 2016 and reaffirmed our efforts to alleviate protectionism and trade limitations,” said SBY. Twenty-one economic leaders of the APEC region also expressed their determination to not limit trade with domestically oriented policies.
Director General of WTO Roberto Azevedo, who came as an invitee to the summit, earlier encouraged the 21 APEC economic leaders to adopt a multilateral trade system. “APEC consists of countries that are big economic players and traders. I believe they have always actively supported a multilateral trade system,” he said, after attending a panel session with APEC ministers on Saturday. Indonesia has also been encouraging an increase in multilateral service trade in the Asia-Pacific region and the development of APEC connectivity to support connectivity in ASEAN and Indonesia. APEC is an economic cooperation forum involving 21 economies in the Asia-Pacific region aimed at promoting free trade and economic cooperation in the region. The forum was established in 1989 and the summit in Bali is the second hosted by Indonesia after the event in Bogor, West Java, in 1994.

Existence of Kertha Gosa in Klungkung County is really a magnet for the APEC delegates in Bali. Having been visited by APEC delegates from youth representatives, such historical relic was then planned to be visited by delegates of the Side Event of APEC Summit 2013 on Tuesday (Oct 8). For smoothness of the agenda, the Klungkung community should be patient because a number of road sections to Kertha Gosa would be closed for five hours. It was affirmed by Chief of Klungkung Police, Ni Wayan Sri Yudatni Wirawati, Monday (Oct 7). This only woman police chief in Bali said the closure of road access leading to Kertha Gosa was made from 1:00 p.m. It aimed to sterilize the situation around the Kertha Gosa. Thus, it would not interfere with the intended agenda. Security was provided in three rings, where the first ring would be filled by Presidential Security Forces (Paspampres), then the second and third ring were filled by police and military lineups. The road section to be closed included Jalan Puputan, Jalan Untung Surapati, Jalan Diponegoro, Jalan Gajah Mada as well as other minor road sections leading to Kertha Gosa. “We estimate the road closure lasts to 5 o’clock
p.m., but depending on the situation at the field later. Hopefully, people can understand the condition,” she explained. Previously, some officers of the Presidential Security Forces had gone back and forth to Klungkung to comb out the Kertha Gosa area since last Saturday. They also made coordination with Klungkung government related to dinner function of the delegates. As planned, there would be four delegates coming to Kertha Gosa, namely the Prime Minister of Salomon, President of Kiribati, Fijian Foreign Minister and Ambassador of the Marshal Island. Acting Officer of Klungkung Regent, Tjokorda Gede Agung, said last Monday that sterilization was not only carried out at Kertha
Gosa area, but also at the area of Klungkung government to the office area of Klungkung Culture and Tourism Agency. “Later, we will also showcase a variety of typical handicrafts of Klungkung such as the Kamasan classic painting, songket fabric, coins industry to coconut shell handicraft industry,” he explained. The visit of Pacific leaders was scheduled to arrive in Klungkung around 3:00 afternoon. Prior to visiting Kertha Gosa, they would transit at the Klungkung government office, precisely at the waiting room of Regional Secretary of Klungkung. Then, the visit was directly resumed to Kertha Gosa accompanied by tour guide that would explain about the history of Kertha Gosa. Apparently, the delegates
were deliberately directed to come into Kertha Gosa from the north, so they would not know if the roof of Kertha Gosa was damaged. Similar treatment also took place when the APEC delegates of youth elements made a visit to Kertha Gosa on October 4. Did Klungkung government not feel ashamed of receiving the APEC delegates in Kertha Gosa under such condition? Tjok Agung admitted that his party never felt ashamed. “We show it off as it is. Obviously, we have tried to refurbish it through the main regional budget 2014. We have allocated a budget worth IDR 1 billion,” he explained. He hoped with so great attention given by world community to the existence of Kertha Gosa, central government was also concerned with the condition of Kertha Gosa. Pregnant women in Gerokgak subdistrict are constantly advised to undergo HIV/AIDS test when getting antenatal checkup for the first time at public health center. It is carried out to anticipate the transmission of the hazardous virus to infants. Ketut Indrawati, a midwife at the Gerokgak Public Health Center II as well as counselor having high concern for the prevention of HIV/AIDS in the region of Gerokgak, said that her party always briefed pregnant women in order to be vigilant against the transmission of HIV/AIDS. Fortunately, their child was known not to get infected to date because it had been given special home treatment. “It’s a pity, the couple has not yet been willing to seek treatment because they feel healthy,” she said. As reported previously, up to August 2013 the cumulative data of HIV in Buleleng County showed there were 1,801 cases. Meanwhile, the average case finding ranged from 20 to 25 every month at 4 VCT services available in Buleleng. During the period of January to September 2013, averagely four people died of AIDS every month belonging to productive age from 21 to 40 years old. (kmb15)

BHA joins international coastal cleanup

SEMINYAK - Anantara Seminyak Resort & Spa, Bali in conjunction with Bali Hotels Association (BHA) proudly instigated the International Coastal Cleanup campaign by clearing debris along Seminyak Beach. BHA members were encouraged to participate and be part of the solution to help protect this popular coastal strip. Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup has developed over the past 25 years to become the world’s largest volunteer effort for ocean health. Each year millions of eco-friendly warriors from all over the world help to clear trash from the shores of lakes, streams, rivers and oceans. Thanks to these volunteers recording every article collected, Ocean Conservancy gains accurate insight into the manufactured items which are impacting our planet’s health. Cleanups alone can’t solve this pollution problem. Nevertheless, the Ocean Trash Index provides a snapshot of what’s polluting our oceans so we can work to prevent specific items from reaching the
water in the first place. BHA members together with Anantara Seminyak Resort & Spa, Bali, Rotary Club Seminyak, media representatives and a numbers of local schools gathered at 7am to clean the beach for one hour. The “Green Army” covered a distance of 2 kilometres picking up all kinds of rubbish along the way. Plastic bags, containers, cutlery, cans, cigarettes and household waste as well as abandoned shoes and fishing debris were just some of the 7,565 items collected. The total trash haul ended up weighing in at over 142,6 kilograms. “Bali Hotel Associations is extremely proud to take part in this eco-friendly initiative. It isdirectly in
line with our objective, which is to continuously strive to find ways to support programs that protect the environment,” commented Alessandro Migliore, Chairman of the Bali Hotels Association. “We hope that our actions will encourage locals and tourists alike to take note and assume responsibility for the daily consumption of one-time products that effectively contribute to the ocean trash problem. We would very much like to start a ripple effect that gets everyone thinking about this issue,” continues Alessandro. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. NEW YORK — Americans don’t just watch TV anymore; they talk about it on Twitter. From the comfort of couches, they share reactions to touchdowns and nail-biting season finales — and advertisers and networks are taking note. Examples of Twitter’s influence abound. The recent finale of “Breaking Bad” generated a record 1.24 million tweets. The conversation peaked at 22,373 tweets per minute according to analytics firm SocialGuide. People used the hashtag “GoodbyeBreakingBad” nearly 500,000 times. During this year’s Super Bowl, sports fans generated 24 million tweets about the competition and nearly half of the game’s nationally televised commercials contained hashtags that encouraged viewers to tweet. Twitter, says Debra Aho Williamson, an analyst at research firm eMarketer, “creates a community, a bond between people that doesn’t really exist without Twitter.” As Twitter prepares for its initial public offering, the San Franciscobased company is also working hard to insert itself into the TV advertising economy. In recent months, the social networking company has forged partnerships with television content owners such as CBS, MTV and the NFL through a program it calls Amplify. The platform lets content owners beam real-time video clips to Twitter users who may have seen —or could be interested in — their TV programming. It also allows marketers to communicate with viewers who saw their TV ads, extending commercial pitches to consumers’ smartphones and tablets. TV tie-ins allow Twitter to diversify its revenue stream beyond the relatively small niche of digital advertising campaigns, a move that should appeal to potential investors. On Thursday, Twitter unsealed documents for a Wall Street debut that could take place before Thanksgiving. While the company did not reveal how much money it makes from its TV partnerships, it touted its own “strength as a second screen for television programming.” Twitter wrote in its S-1 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that “45% of television ads shown during the Super Bowl used a hashtag to invite viewers to engage in conversation about those television ads on Twitter.”

casual, professional and creative balance, even as blogs and news stories regularly focus on the image of female high-tech executives — from the extraordinarily stylish Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, featured in last month’s Vogue magazine, to Facebook’s uber-chic chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg. Meanwhile, when men are similarly featured attention often shifts to casual attire — from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s famous hoodie to former Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ black turtleneck. “As much as we want to think there isn’t a boys club, the Silicon Valley still feels very much run by men and there’s a difference in expectations,” says San Mateo-based image consultant Marina Sarmiento Feehan. “Women who rise to the top tend to be judged more, both by men and other women, and in order to succeed they do have to dress better.”

NUSA DUA - China has officially accepted the chairmanship of the 2014 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings and the administration of the capital city Beijing would develop infrastructure to support the event, said an official. The director general of China’s foreign ministry for Beijing region, Zhao Huimin, said on Tuesday that China, as the host of APEC 2014 and the world’s second largest economy, has started its preparations. He assured the public that the facilities to be provided will meet international standards like in Indonesia this year. “Preparations are continuously being made. The website has also been completed and other facilities are being prepared according to international standards,” he said. The Chinese delegation earlier said activities of the APEC 2014 would include the APEC CEO Summit, the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) meeting, the China-APEC forum, APEC forum for small and medium sized businesses, APEC forum for young entrepreneurs, and a
discussion forum for ministers from relevant sectors and businessmen. China said at the APEC CEO summit this year, its delegation was the biggest, totalling 200 out of 1,200 business leaders present. Next year, the APEC Business Council would be immediately established to involve more Chinese businessmen. Huimin said he cannot disclose the details of China’s economic agenda at APEC 2014. However, it has been reported that discussions on China’s detailed agenda for APEC 2014 would commence after the APEC 2013 in Indonesia and it would be consolidated with other APEC economies. The economies in the Asia Pacific region reportedly need a total of US$850 billion to build infrastructure. This considerable amount of money needs to come from sizeable financial sources, which means the private sector. To meet this goal, the Indonesian President called for closer cooperation between the government and the private sector. “A close collaboration will result in a win-win situation, especially at a time when the global economy is yet to fully recover,” he added. Some big players in Asia Pacific have also been stating their interest in investing in infrastructure building in the region. NUSA DUA - Japan’s prime minister reached out to the leaders of China and South Korea at an Asia-Pacific summit, officials said Tuesday, shaking hands and exchanging greetings in a bid to overcome deep tensions. Shinzo Abe managed a brief encounter with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday and with South Korean President Park Geun-Hye on Tuesday as all three attended group meetings of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Indonesia. “I understand that he shook hands with the two leaders,” Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters in Tokyo. “I think it’s good that the leaders see each other repeatedly and exchange greetings,” he said, after Abe staged similar encounters with Xi and Park at a Group of 20
summit in Russia last month. There was no immediate comment from China or South Korea on the encounters, which fell short of Abe’s desire for full meetings with his neighbours’ leaders. “I want to seize on an opportune time to exchange views” with them in Bali, Abe said in Tokyo on Sunday before leaving for the two-day APEC gathering, which ended on Tuesday. “I want to send a message that the door of dialogue is always open.” Abe has not held formal talks with the Chinese and South Korean leaders since taking office last December. Tokyo’s ties with its neighbours have been strained by territorial disputes and the legacy of Japan’s 20th century wartime aggression. Japanese officials in Bali and Tokyo were not explicit about any words exchanged at the APEC summit, but Japanese media played up the encounters, noting that Abe was all smiles as he sat next to Park at the start of a summit session on Tuesday. Relations between Japan and South Korea had appeared to warm in the first half of 2012. But they turned icy in August with then South Korean president Lee Myung-Bak’s sudden visit to Seoul-controlled islands that lie in waters between the two countries.

First Deck Officer Giovanni Iaccarino was the first witness called
by the prosecution in the case against Capt. Francesco Schettino, who is accused of manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning the ship before everyone was off. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted. Schettino is accused of taking the Concordia off its planned route on Jan. 13. 2012 and bringing it closer to the island of Giglio for so-called “tourist navigation” — a publicity-generating maneuver to
give passengers a close-up view of the Tuscan island. Schettino has said the navigational charts on board didn’t show the “Scole” reef off Giglio, which sliced a 70-meter (230-foot) gash in the ship’s hull. After the grounding, the ship listed, drifted and eventually capsized off Giglio’s port. Iaccarino was asked by one of the lawyers representing civil parties to the case if the charts on board the ship were adequate. “Yes,

for a half-mile” away, he said. The reef was about a quarter-mile from shore. NUSA DUA - By using solar power, Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport will become one of the world’s environmentally friendly aerodromes, an official said on Tuesday. “All solar panels are expected to be installed at the airport by at least early 2015 because we will be commencing a feasibility study at the end of this year,” PT Angkasa Pura I Corporate Secretary Farid Indra Nugraha revealed while signing a cooperation agreement with the Sintesa Group-SunEdison at the Grand Nikko Hotel on Tuesday. The collaboration is part of the framework used in green technology, which will be initiated by the U.S. Commercial Services. Meanwhile, Sintesa Group CEO Shinta Widjaja Kamdani said the solar panels capable of producing 15 megawatt (MW) of electricity will be installed at the Ngurah Rai Airport with an investment of US$45 million. She further pointed out that using solar panels will help reduce the use of electricity generated from fossils. “It is expected to reduce carbon emissions by up to 200,000 tons,” Kamdani stated. In addition to the Ngurah Rai Airport, airports in Surabaya, Makassar and Balikpapan are also expected to be converted into environment friendly airports later.

WASHINGTON - The United States launches on Tuesday a new $100 bill that comes with, for the iconic greenback, a new touch of color, as well as special features to foil counterfeiters. In its first remake since 1996, the $100 banknote, which takes a key role in cash transactions for everyone from small traders to big drug traffickers worldwide, sports the traditional portrait of American Revolutionary War statesman Benjamin Franklin on the front. On the back, too, it depicts Philadelphia’s Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776. But it adds a yellowish “100” in one corner and, next to Franklin, a tan quill and bronze-colored inkwell that holds inside it the Philadelphia Liberty Bell in changing colors from darker brown to green, depending on the angle the note is held. Cutting vertically through the middle of the banknote is a blue security ribbon that shows numerous small Liberty Bells and 100s printed in darker blue, which appear to move as the note is shifted. While the feature appears like a hologram, the 100s and bells are actually microscopic in size and are enlarged by millions of micro-lenses printed on the note which make the figures appear to move, said Sonja Danburg, program manager in charge of currency education at the Federal Reserve. The new design comes primarily to fight the increasing sophistication of counterfeiters, Danburg told AFP. “It’s our most global banknote. Between a half and two-thirds of them are circulating outside of the United States, and it’s also the most counterfeited of US denominations outside of the United States,” she said. “We want to stay ahead of counterfeiting threats, we want to protect the public.” Danburg said that counterfeiters, from small-time printers to state-sponsored crooks, remain a challenge though their production is small in contrast to the total amount of greenbacks in global circulation -- about $80 million last year, compared with about $1 trillion in US notes circulating. The new $100 banknote, printed on the traditional cotton and linen paper with green and black ink, has other foils for copiers. For instance, the design includes showing the back of Independence Hall, rather than the building’s front as before, so copiers cannot just use their old printing plates. The government has printed 3.5 billion of the new banknotes, which will hit the streets in the United States on Tuesday. It will take some days before banks that receive them from the Federal Reserve ship them to branches and counterparts around the world. But the Federal Reserve wants to make sure users around the world recognize the new design as valid and do not reject them. “People are relying on it not only as a medium of exchange for business or consumer transactions. It also offers a store of value. We want to make sure that everybody who is relying on US currency maintains that faith and confidence in it.”

Indonesia also signalled its irritation at the huge focus on TPP at the APEC summit, shunting the planned meeting on Tuesday afternoon of the 12 nations involved to a hotel outside the official venue. “We mind actually, and one of the reasons, at the very least, is we don’t want any coverage that will overshadow APEC,” an Indonesian government official told AFP, when asked about why the TPP countries had been told to meet outside. Meanwhile, China and Indonesia are involved in plans for a rival free trade pact involving 16 countries around the region and being spearheaded by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Negotiations for that pact are expected to be discussed at an East Asia Summit in Brunei this week.

DENPASAR - For more than a year subak in Bali has been included in the world cultural heritage (WCH). However, it is considered to have not brought in any benefits. On the one hand, the inclusion of subak in the WCH can be the pride and blessing for Bali if it is indeed supported by real programs to maintain and preserve the subak. But on the other hand, the WCH status is feared as it can even be disastrous. If Bali cannot maintain the existence of subak amid the land conversion and expansion of the tourism industry going on massively, exploitatively and greedily with the land and the environment, the status of subak as WCH can be evaluated and revoked back by the UNESCO. It was revealed in the roundtable discussion on the topic “A Year after Subak Included in the WCH” in Denpasar, Wednesday (Oct 2). Chairman of the Society of Agribusiness and Agro-Industry (MAI) of Bali Chapter, AA Ngurah Alit Wiraputra, judged the government was still not serious to maintain and preserve the existence of subak denoting one of the uniqueness and
strengths owned by Bali in agriculture with all kinds of cultural richness that could shore up the Bali tourism industry. Ironically, after over a year the subak included in the WCH, there had been no real action and programs that had actually been touching the subak. He did not deny the international award as WCH given to subak was the pride and blessing for Bali. Unfortunately, it was not more than just a reward without being followed up with an effort to preserve subak. “Inclusion of subak in the WCH can be a blessing and calamity. If we are not able to preserve the subak amid the threat of massive land conversion so for the sake of tourism interest, the status of subak as WCH can be revoked. If this happens it will certainly become a bad track record for Bali. International community will assume us as a nation that cannot maintain the noble culture inherited over the centuries. It will certainly tarnish the image of Bali,” said Wiraputra doubling as Chairman of the Badung Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin). Challenge to preserve subak and agriculture in wider context in Bali was very heavy. Moreover, the
government still lacked of budget. Necessarily, said the Bali legislator candidate of Badung region, the government had to increase the agricultural budget and design a real program to implement the subak into the WCH. The government ideally involved private entrepreneurs having a concern with the field and increased the active role of community and agricultural technology. “Incentives for farmers that can maintain their farmland should also be increased and there must be a real program for community empowerment,” he said while questioning to what extent the Management Council of Bali Cultural Heritage had been working to follow up the inclusion of subak in the WCH. Wayan Swastika from the Denpasar Agriculture, Food Crops and Horticulture Agency did not dismiss if many subak areas in Denpasar ‘collapsed’, namely converted into residential areas, tourist accommodation and others. “Problem of the urban agriculture in Denpasar has indeed been very complex, chiefly related to the increasingly decrease in farmland as well as the massive and uncontrollable land conversion,” he said. Denpasar Municipality gave tax
relief in the form of subsidies for the land designated as green belt, but in fact such an effort could not stem the rate of increasingly massive land conversion. On the other hand, there were many small farmers (with land less than 5,000 sqm) whose condition was very worrying. They were faced with difficult choices namely maintaining the farmland with unsatisfactory results or selling the land or converting the land with tantalizing results. Such condition also kindled the rampant land conversion in Denpasar. Even, many subak areas had disappeared and only left a memory or nameplate. “Now, only 41 subak areas remain to survive. They totally spread across 2,597 hectares, while the disappearing ones almost reach 150 hectares. The subak areas in critical condition and nearly disappear also remain a lot. On the other hand, the land fertility has also been declining and water discharge is getting smaller. So, it is difficult to develop the agriculture in Denpasar,” he said while adding that his party focused on the agriculture and provided horticulture training to deal with the problems. Head of the Bali Institute for
Agricultural Technology (BPTP), AANB Kamandalu, said that his party also attempted to assist the government in terms of the agricultural technology so the Bali agriculture could get the touch of technology. Challenges to preserve subak and develop the agriculture in Bali related to the restrictedness of land owned by farmers. According to him, the results of survey indicated that ownership of farmland in Bali only reached 0.2 to 0.3 hectares (2,000-3,000 square meters). “Our problem is the decrease of land, so farmers must be equipped with technology,” he said. He hoped all parties had a concern in preserving subak and realizing the subak community empowerment programs after it was included in the WCH. His party also suggested the government to make collaboration with local universities having the faculty of agriculture to jointly provide mentoring and transfer of the agricultural technologies to farmers. “Community and farmer empowerment programs of Bali government such as Gerbangsadu and Simantri must also be guarded, evaluated and improved through facilitation so this program will be on target,” he concluded. LAMPEDUSA, Italy — Deep sea divers “unpacked a wall of people” from the hull of a smuggler’s trawler on the sea floor near this Italian island on Monday, gingerly untangling the dead would-be migrants in the latest and most painstaking phase of a recovery operation following the ship’s fiery capsizing. It was the first time the divers had been able to reach the hull, and authorities said 38 more bodies were recovered, raising the death toll from last Thursday’s tragedy to 232. Scores more are believed missing; most, if not all, were Eritreans trying to reach Europe in search of asylum and a better life. “They unpacked a wall of people,” said Navy Capt. Paolo Trucco of the deep sea specialists. The bodies “were so entwined, one with the other, it is indescribable. They were so trapped they were difficult to pull out.” Deep sea divers in their weighted suits and sturdy port-holed helmets were able to spend up to 30 minutes at a time at the site of the wreck 47 meters (154 feet) below the surface — much more than a scuba diver’s typical seven to 10 minutes at that depth. This allowed them to remove debris that was still floating around
inside narrow passage ways to reach the vessel’s hull. “Mattresses, blankets, stairs. Anything that would float. Imagine if you put a house in a centrifuge and you see what winds up in the air. That is what happened,” Trucco said. Diver Marco Presti said the bodies were packed together when the ship capsized, and he and his colleagues had to pull each out by the arms. “One diver after the other, we passed them from one to the other, and placed them on the stern of the boat,” he said. Coast Guard Capt. Filippo Marini estimated it would take two more days to complete the search and recovery mission. Only 155 of the migrants survived the fiery shipwreck. Survivors have said there were at least 500 people aboard the 18-meter-long (59-foot) boat when it sank. Diver Riccardo Nobile, who did multiple dives on Sunday when 83
bodies were recovered in easier to reach areas, said he waited for more than an hour among the corpses on a recovery boat as other divers took their turns. Divers from the Navy, Coast Guard, Carabinieri military police and the fire department have done rotations. “It was difficult to look straight at their faces, to see their wounds, see their tormented expressions, their outstretched arms,” Nobile said. “It was extremely difficult. But this is our job.” The ship had arrived within sight of Lampedusa, a tiny island that is Italy’s southernmost point, after two days of sailing from Libya when a fire set to draw the attention of potential rescuers sparked a panic on board, leading the vessel to capsize. Motor-sports experts, however, pointed at the organizers, saying the setup of the state-sponsored show was blatantly deficient and life-threatening. Organizers of the “Extreme Aeroshow” said hundreds of families had gathered without permission in what was supposed to be the pit area at one end of a makeshift arena in a park in Chihuahua, capital of the border state of Chihuahua. The pit area was unprotected by any barrier and sat feet from where the monster truck known as “Big Show” was crushing a pair of old cars, leaping into the air and rolling over their hoods and roofs. Video of the accident shows the truck coming down hard off the second car, bouncing and then speeding out of control into the crowd. One organizer said the spectators hadn’t been moved out of the pit zone before the show because “crowd management is very difficult.” The safety situation was “about as bad as it could get,” said Marty Garza, spokesman for the Monster Truck Racing Association, the primary safety organization for the industry in the United States. “There was some pretty blatant disregard for the safety of spectators,” he said. “There is no excuse for why the spectators were situated as they were, period.”

He stated that the BNN would take further steps to follow up the discovery of methamphetamine and marijuana in the working room of the former chief judge. “The locations where pieces of evidence were found and where AM was arrested are different. This is what we are going to investigate to find out who actually owns the drug stash,” Dwiyanto said. Anti-graft agency, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) had discovered the drugs in the working room of the chief judge when it conducted searches
on Thursday and handed them over to the BNN on Friday for conducting checks to verify if they were really narcotic drugs. The BNN later confirmed that they were really methamphetamine, which was found in the form green and purple pills and marijuana which was found rolled into four parts, with one of them having been used. Dwiyanto further pointed out that the pill form of methamphetamine was categorized as new in Indonesia as so far it had been distributed in the form of crystals. LAMPEDUSA, Italy — Deep sea divers “unpacked a wall of people” from the hull of a smuggler’s trawler on the sea floor near this Italian island on Monday, gingerly untangling the dead would-be migrants in the latest and most painstaking phase of a recovery operation following the ship’s fiery capsizing. It was the first time the divers had been able to reach the hull, and authorities said 38 more bodies were recovered, raising the death toll from last Thursday’s tragedy to 232. Scores more are believed missing; most, if not all, were Eritreans trying to reach Europe in search of asylum and a better life. “They unpacked a wall of people,” said Navy Capt. Paolo Trucco of the deep sea specialists. The bodies “were so entwined, one with the other, it is indescribable. They were so trapped they were difficult to pull out.” Deep sea divers in their weighted suits and sturdy port-holed helmets were able to spend up to 30 minutes at a time at the site of the wreck 47 meters (154 feet) below the surface — much more than a scuba diver’s typical seven to 10 minutes at that depth. This allowed them to remove debris that was still floating around
inside narrow passage ways to reach the vessel’s hull. “Mattresses, blankets, stairs. Anything that would float. Imagine if you put a house in a centrifuge and you see what winds up in the air. That is what happened,” Trucco said. Diver Marco Presti said the bodies were packed together when the ship capsized, and he and his colleagues had to pull each out by the arms. “One diver after the other, we passed them from one to the other, and placed them on the stern of the boat,” he said. Coast Guard Capt. Filippo Marini estimated it would take two more days to complete the search and recovery mission. Only 155 of the migrants survived the fiery shipwreck. Survivors have said there were at least 500 people aboard the 18-meter-long (59-foot) boat when it sank. Diver Riccardo Nobile, who did multiple dives on Sunday when 83
bodies were recovered in easier to reach areas, said he waited for more than an hour among the corpses on a recovery boat as other divers took their turns. Divers from the Navy, Coast Guard, Carabinieri military police and the fire department have done rotations. “It was difficult to look straight at their faces, to see their wounds, see their tormented expressions, their outstretched arms,” Nobile said. “It was extremely difficult. But this is our job.” The ship had arrived within sight of Lampedusa, a tiny island that is Italy’s southernmost point, after two days of sailing from Libya when a fire set to draw the attention of potential rescuers sparked a panic on board, leading the vessel to capsize. Motor-sports experts, however, pointed at the organizers, saying the setup of the state-sponsored show was blatantly deficient and life-threatening. Organizers of the “Extreme Aeroshow” said hundreds of families had gathered without permission in what was supposed to be the pit area at one end of a makeshift arena in a park in Chihuahua, capital of the border state of Chihuahua. The pit area was unprotected by any barrier and sat feet from where the monster truck known as “Big Show” was crushing a pair of old cars, leaping into the air and rolling over their hoods and roofs. Video of the accident shows the truck coming down hard off the second car, bouncing and then speeding out of control into the crowd. One organizer said the spectators hadn’t been moved out of the pit zone before the show because “crowd management is very difficult.” The safety situation was “about as bad as it could get,” said Marty Garza, spokesman for the Monster Truck Racing Association, the primary safety organization for the industry in the United States. “There was some pretty blatant disregard for the safety of spectators,” he said. “There is no excuse for why the spectators were situated as they were, period.”

He stated that the BNN would take further steps to follow up the discovery of methamphetamine and marijuana in the working room of the former chief judge. “The locations where pieces of evidence were found and where AM was arrested are different. This is what we are going to investigate to find out who actually owns the drug stash,” Dwiyanto said. Anti-graft agency, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) had discovered the drugs in the working room of the chief judge when it conducted searches
on Thursday and handed them over to the BNN on Friday for conducting checks to verify if they were really narcotic drugs. The BNN later confirmed that they were really methamphetamine, which was found in the form green and purple pills and marijuana which was found rolled into four parts, with one of them having been used. NUSA DUA - By using solar power, Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport will become one of the world’s environmentally friendly aerodromes, an official said on Tuesday. “All solar panels are expected to be installed at the airport by at least early 2015 because we will be commencing a feasibility study at the end of this year,” PT Angkasa Pura I Corporate Secretary Farid Indra Nugraha revealed while signing a cooperation agreement with the Sintesa Group-SunEdison at the Grand Nikko Hotel on Tuesday. The collaboration is part of the framework used in green technology, which will be initiated by the U.S. Commercial Services. Meanwhile, Sintesa Group CEO Shinta Widjaja Kamdani said the solar panels capable of producing 15 megawatt (MW) of electricity will be installed at the Ngurah Rai Airport with an investment of US$45 million. She further pointed out that using solar panels will help reduce the use of electricity generated from fossils. “It is expected to reduce carbon emissions by up to 200,000 tons,” Kamdani stated. In addition to the Ngurah Rai Airport, airports in Surabaya, Makassar and Balikpapan are also expected to be converted into environment friendly airports later.

WASHINGTON - The United States launches on Tuesday a new $100 bill that comes with, for the iconic greenback, a new touch of color, as well as special features to foil counterfeiters. In its first remake since 1996, the $100 banknote, which takes a key role in cash transactions for everyone from small traders to big drug traffickers worldwide, sports the traditional portrait of American Revolutionary War statesman Benjamin Franklin on the front. On the back, too, it depicts Philadelphia’s Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776. But it adds a yellowish “100” in one corner and, next to Franklin, a tan quill and bronze-colored inkwell that holds inside it the Philadelphia Liberty Bell in changing colors from darker brown to green, depending on the angle the note is held. Cutting vertically through the middle of the banknote is a blue security ribbon that shows numerous small Liberty Bells and 100s printed in darker blue, which appear to move as the note is shifted. While the feature appears like a hologram, the 100s and bells are actually microscopic in size and are enlarged by millions of micro-lenses printed on the note which make the figures appear to move, said Sonja Danburg, program manager in charge of currency education at the Federal Reserve. The new design comes primarily to fight the increasing sophistication of counterfeiters, Danburg told AFP. “It’s our most global banknote. Between a half and two-thirds of them are circulating outside of the United States, and it’s also the most counterfeited of US denominations outside of the United States,” she said. “We want to stay ahead of counterfeiting threats, we want to protect the public.” Danburg said that counterfeiters, from small-time printers to state-sponsored crooks, remain a challenge though their production is small in contrast to the total amount of greenbacks in global circulation -- about $80 million last year, compared with about $1 trillion in US notes circulating. The new $100 banknote, printed on the traditional cotton and linen paper with green and black ink, has other foils for copiers. For instance, the design includes showing the back of Independence Hall, rather than the building’s front as before, so copiers cannot just use their old printing plates. The government has printed 3.5 billion of the new banknotes, which will hit the streets in the United States on Tuesday. It will take some days before banks that receive them from the Federal Reserve ship them to branches and counterparts around the world. But the Federal Reserve wants to make sure users around the world recognize the new design as valid and do not reject them. “People are relying on it not only as a medium of exchange for business or consumer transactions. It also offers a store of value. We want to make sure that everybody who is relying on US currency maintains that faith and confidence in it.”

NUSA DUA - The United States stepped up efforts to reinforce its economic might in the Asia-Pacific at a regional leaders’ summit in Indonesia on Tuesday, amid warnings from an increasingly bold China. The two-day Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) event at a five-star resort on the tropical island of Bali is aimed at breaking down trade barriers among all 21 member economies, but rival agendas by the world powers have overshadowed the talks. Filling in for US President Barack Obama, Secretary of State John Kerry has lobbied for the quick signing of a mega free trade pact grouping 12 APEC nations but not China and summit host Indonesia. “We need modern rules for a changing road, rules that keep pace with the speed of today’s markets,” Kerry said in a speech on the sidelines of the summit on Monday that was in large part a hard-sell for the planned Trans-Pacific Partnership. Kerry was set to meet the leaders of the 11 other nations involved in the TPP on Tuesday afternoon in a bid to hit an

Indonesia also signalled its irritation at the huge focus on TPP at the APEC summit, shunting the planned meeting on Tuesday afternoon of the 12 nations involved to a hotel outside the official venue. “We mind actually, and one of the reasons, at the very least, is we don’t want any coverage that will overshadow APEC,” an Indonesian government official told AFP, when asked about why the TPP countries had been told to meet outside. Meanwhile, China and Indonesia are involved in plans for a rival free trade pact involving 16 countries around the region and being spearheaded by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. DENPASAR - For more than a year subak in Bali has been included in the world cultural heritage (WCH). However, it is considered to have not brought in any benefits. On the one hand, the inclusion of subak in the WCH can be the pride and blessing for Bali if it is indeed supported by real programs to maintain and preserve the subak. But on the other hand, the WCH status is feared as it can even be disastrous. If Bali cannot maintain the existence of subak amid the land conversion and expansion of the tourism industry going on massively, exploitatively and greedily with the land and the environment, the status of subak as WCH can be evaluated and revoked back by the UNESCO. It was revealed in the roundtable discussion on the topic “A Year after Subak Included in the WCH” in Denpasar, Wednesday (Oct 2). Chairman of the Society of Agribusiness and Agro-Industry (MAI) of Bali Chapter, AA Ngurah Alit Wiraputra, judged the government was still not serious to maintain and preserve the existence of subak denoting one of the uniqueness and
strengths owned by Bali in agriculture with all kinds of cultural richness that could shore up the Bali tourism industry. Ironically, after over a year the subak included in the WCH, there had been no real action and programs that had actually been touching the subak. He did not deny the international award as WCH given to subak was the pride and blessing for Bali. Unfortunately, it was not more than just a reward without being followed up with an effort to preserve subak. “Inclusion of subak in the WCH can be a blessing and calamity. If we are not able to preserve the subak amid the threat of massive land conversion so for the sake of tourism interest, the status of subak as WCH can be revoked. If this happens it will certainly become a bad track record for Bali. International community will assume us as a nation that cannot maintain the noble culture inherited over the centuries. It will certainly tarnish the image of Bali,” said Wiraputra doubling as Chairman of the Badung Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin). Challenge to preserve subak and agriculture in wider context in Bali was very heavy. Moreover, the
government still lacked of budget. Necessarily, said the Bali legislator candidate of Badung region, the government had to increase the agricultural budget and design a real program to implement the subak into the WCH. The government ideally involved private entrepreneurs having a concern with the field and increased the active role of community and agricultural technology. “Incentives for farmers that can maintain their farmland should also be increased and there must be a real program for community empowerment,” he said while questioning to what extent the Management Council of Bali Cultural Heritage had been working to follow up the inclusion of subak in the WCH. Wayan Swastika from the Denpasar Agriculture, Food Crops and Horticulture Agency did not dismiss if many subak areas in Denpasar ‘collapsed’, namely converted into residential areas, tourist accommodation and others. “Problem of the urban agriculture in Denpasar has indeed been very complex, chiefly related to the increasingly decrease in farmland as well as the massive and uncontrollable land conversion,” he said. Denpasar Municipality gave tax
relief in the form of subsidies for the land designated as green belt, but in fact such an effort could not stem the rate of increasingly massive land conversion. On the other hand, there were many small farmers (with land less than 5,000 sqm) whose condition was very worrying. They were faced with difficult choices namely maintaining the farmland with unsatisfactory results or selling the land or converting the land with tantalizing results. Such condition also kindled the rampant land conversion in Denpasar. Even, many subak areas had disappeared and only left a memory or nameplate. “Now, only 41 subak areas remain to survive. They totally spread across 2,597 hectares, while the disappearing ones almost reach 150 hectares. The subak areas in critical condition and nearly disappear also remain a lot. On the other hand, the land fertility has also been declining and water discharge is getting smaller. So, it is difficult to develop the agriculture in Denpasar,” he said while adding that his party focused on the agriculture and provided horticulture training to deal with the problems. Head of the Bali Institute for
Agricultural Technology (BPTP), AANB Kamandalu, said that his party also attempted to assist the government in terms of the agricultural technology so the Bali agriculture could get the touch of technology. Challenges to preserve subak and develop the agriculture in Bali related to the restrictedness of land owned by farmers. According to him, the results of survey indicated that ownership of farmland in Bali only reached 0.2 to 0.3 hectares (2,000-3,000 square meters). “Our problem is the decrease of land, so farmers must be equipped with technology,” he said. He hoped all parties had a concern in preserving subak and realizing the subak community empowerment programs after it was included in the WCH. His party also suggested the government to make collaboration with local universities having the faculty of agriculture to jointly provide mentoring and transfer of the agricultural technologies to farmers. “Community and farmer empowerment programs of Bali government such as Gerbangsadu and Simantri must also be guarded, evaluated and improved through facilitation so this program will be on target,” he concluded. BRASILIA - Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff demanded on Monday that Canada explain a media report that said it spied on Brazil’s Mines and Energy Ministry, and she called on the United States and its allies to stop spying over the Internet. A Brazilian television report said on Sunday that Canada’s electronic eavesdropping agency targeted the ministry that manages the South American nation’s vast mineral and oil resources. The report was based on documents leaked by former U.S. National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden. “That is unacceptable between nations that are supposed to be partners,” Rousseff said via Twitter. “We repudiate this cyber warfare.” Rousseff, who canceled a planned state visit to the United
States this month because of previous reports that the NSA had spied on her telephone calls and emails, noted that Sunday’s report pointed to Canada’s interests in Brazilian mining, where many Canadian companies are active. By targeting the mines ministry, Rousseff said, Canadian spying is nothing less than industrial espionage. She has rejected U.S. explanations that NSA spying is aimed solely at identifying terrorist threats and is not motivated by commercial interests. “The United States and its allies must immediately stop their spying activity once and for all,” Rousseff tweeted. Brazil’s Foreign Ministry summoned Canada’s ambassador to demand an explanation for what it called a “serious and unacceptable violation” of Brazilian sovereignty and the right to privacy of its citizens and companies, a ministry statement said.

GROSSETO, Italy — A crew member of the shipwrecked Costa Concordia testified Monday that the nautical charts aboard the doomed ship were perfectly adequate to navigate the liner along its planned route, disputing claims by the captain on trial for the deaths of 32 people. First Deck Officer Giovanni Iaccarino was the first witness called
by the prosecution in the case against Capt. Francesco Schettino, who is accused of manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning the ship before everyone was off. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted. Schettino is accused of taking the Concordia off its planned route on Jan. 13. 2012 and bringing it closer to the island of Giglio for so-called “tourist navigation” — a publicity-generating maneuver to
give passengers a close-up view of the Tuscan island. Schettino has said the navigational charts on board didn’t show the “Scole” reef off Giglio, which sliced a 70-meter (230-foot) gash in the ship’s hull. After the grounding, the ship listed, drifted and eventually capsized off Giglio’s port. Iaccarino was asked by one of the lawyers representing civil parties to the case if the charts on board the ship were adequate. “Yes,

NEW YORK — Americans don’t just watch TV anymore; they talk about it on Twitter. From the comfort of couches, they share reactions to touchdowns and nail-biting season finales — and advertisers and networks are taking note. Examples of Twitter’s influence abound. The recent finale of “Breaking Bad” generated a record 1.24 million tweets. The conversation peaked at 22,373 tweets per minute according to analytics firm SocialGuide. People used the hashtag “GoodbyeBreakingBad” nearly 500,000 times. During this year’s Super Bowl, sports fans generated 24 million tweets about the competition and nearly half of the game’s nationally televised commercials contained hashtags that encouraged viewers to tweet. Twitter, says Debra Aho Williamson, an analyst at research firm eMarketer, “creates a community, a bond between people that doesn’t really exist without Twitter.” As Twitter prepares for its initial public offering, the San Franciscobased company is also working hard to insert itself into the TV advertising economy. In recent months, the social networking company has forged partnerships with television content owners such as CBS, MTV and the NFL through a program it calls Amplify. The platform lets content owners beam real-time video clips to Twitter users who may have seen —or could be interested in — their TV programming. It also allows marketers to communicate with viewers who saw their TV ads, extending commercial pitches to consumers’ smartphones and tablets. TV tie-ins allow Twitter to diversify its revenue stream beyond the relatively small niche of digital advertising campaigns, a move that should appeal to potential investors. On Thursday, Twitter unsealed documents for a Wall Street debut that could take place before Thanksgiving. While the company did not reveal how much money it makes from its TV partnerships, it touted its own “strength as a second screen for television programming.” Twitter wrote in its S-1 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that “45% of television ads shown during the Super Bowl used a hashtag to invite viewers to engage in conversation about those television ads on Twitter.”

The focus on men’s fashion has emerged in a sector where 3 of 4 workers are males. And it’s come late by comparison as women in technology have long faced style challenges. casual, professional and creative balance, even as blogs and news stories regularly focus on the image of female high-tech executives — from the extraordinarily stylish Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, featured in last month’s Vogue magazine, to Facebook’s uber-chic chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg. Meanwhile, when men are similarly featured attention often shifts to casual attire — from Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s famous hoodie to former Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ black turtleneck. “As much as we want to think there isn’t a boys club, the Silicon Valley still feels very much run by men and there’s a difference in expectations,” says San Mateo-based image consultant Marina Sarmiento Feehan. “Women who rise to the top tend to be judged more, both by men and other women, and in order to succeed they do have to dress better.”

NUSA DUA - China has officially accepted the chairmanship of the 2014 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings and the administration of the capital city Beijing would develop infrastructure to support the event, said an official. The director general of China’s foreign ministry for Beijing region, Zhao Huimin, said on Tuesday that China, as the host of APEC 2014 and the world’s second largest economy, has started its preparations. He assured the public that the facilities to be provided will meet international standards like in Indonesia this year. “Preparations are continuously being made. The website has also been completed and other facilities are being prepared according to international standards,” he said. The Chinese delegation earlier said activities of the APEC 2014 would include the APEC CEO Summit, the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) meeting, the China-APEC forum, APEC forum for small and medium sized businesses, APEC forum for young entrepreneurs, and a
discussion forum for ministers from relevant sectors and businessmen. China said at the APEC CEO summit this year, its delegation was the biggest, totalling 200 out of 1,200 business leaders present. Next year, the APEC Business Council would be immediately established to involve more Chinese businessmen. Huimin said he cannot disclose the details of China’s economic agenda at APEC 2014. However, it has been reported that discussions on China’s detailed agenda for APEC 2014 would commence after the APEC 2013 in Indonesia and it would be consolidated with other APEC economies. Besides Beijing, Hong Kong has also been touted as the host of the APEC Financial Ministers Meeting in September 2014.

At the same time, infrastructure and connectivity building will create more jobs and ensure job security,” President Susilo Bambang Yudhyono said on Tuesday after the conclusion of the APEC Leaders Meeting 2013. The economies in the Asia Pacific region reportedly need a total of US$850 billion to build infrastructure. This considerable amount of money needs to come from sizeable financial sources, which means the private sector. To meet this goal, the Indonesian President called for closer cooperation between the government and the private sector. “A close collaboration will result in a win-win situation, especially at a time when the global economy is yet to fully recover,” he added. Some big players in Asia Pacific have also been stating their interest in investing in infrastructure building in the region. Yasushi Takase, Japan’s Deputy Director General of the Economic Affairs Bureau had stated earlier that his country was willing to support infrastructure projects in the Asia Pacific. “Enhancing connectivity is a very important issue for the region because this is the foundation for regional economic integration. NUSA DUA - Japan’s prime minister reached out to the leaders of China and South Korea at an Asia-Pacific summit, officials said Tuesday, shaking hands and exchanging greetings in a bid to overcome deep tensions. Shinzo Abe managed a brief encounter with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday and with South Korean President Park Geun-Hye on Tuesday as all three attended group meetings of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Indonesia. “I understand that he shook hands with the two leaders,” Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters in Tokyo. “I think it’s good that the leaders see each other repeatedly and exchange greetings,” he said, after Abe staged similar encounters with Xi and Park at a Group of 20
summit in Russia last month. There was no immediate comment from China or South Korea on the encounters, which fell short of Abe’s desire for full meetings with his neighbours’ leaders. “I want to seize on an opportune time to exchange views” with them in Bali, Abe said in Tokyo on Sunday before leaving for the two-day APEC gathering, which ended on Tuesday. “I want to send a message that the door of dialogue is always open.” Abe has not held formal talks with the Chinese and South Korean leaders since taking office last December. Tokyo’s ties with its neighbours have been strained by territorial disputes and the legacy of Japan’s 20th century wartime aggression. Abe’s brief handshake with Xi at the G20 in Saint Petersburg represented the first encounter between leaders of the two countries since relations took a nosedive
in 2012 over the ownership of uninhabited islands in the East China Sea, a row that has led to warnings of a possible armed confrontation. The last trilateral meeting among China, Japan and South Korea was in May last year in Beijing, when the trio’s previous generation of leaders gathered. Japanese officials in Bali and Tokyo were not explicit about any words exchanged at the APEC summit, but Japanese media played up the encounters, noting that Abe was all smiles as he sat next to Park at the start of a summit session on Tuesday. Relations between Japan and South Korea had appeared to warm in the first half of 2012. But they turned icy in August with then South Korean president Lee Myung-Bak’s sudden visit to Seoul-controlled islands that lie in waters between the two countries.

The road section to be closed included Jalan Puputan, Jalan Untung Surapati, Jalan Diponegoro, Jalan Gajah Mada as well as other minor road sections leading to Kertha Gosa. “We estimate the road closure lasts to 5 o’clock
p.m., but depending on the situation at the field later. Hopefully, people can understand the condition,” she explained. Previously, some officers of the Presidential Security Forces had gone back and forth to Klungkung to comb out the Kertha Gosa area since last Saturday. They also made coordination with Klungkung government related to dinner function of the delegates. As planned, there would be four delegates coming to Kertha Gosa, namely the Prime Minister of Salomon, President of Kiribati, Fijian Foreign Minister and Ambassador of the Marshal Island. Acting Officer of Klungkung Regent, Tjokorda Gede Agung, said last Monday that sterilization was not only carried out at Kertha
Gosa area, but also at the area of Klungkung government to the office area of Klungkung Culture and Tourism Agency. “Later, we will also showcase a variety of typical handicrafts of Klungkung such as the Kamasan classic painting, songket fabric, coins industry to coconut shell handicraft industry,” he explained. The visit of Pacific leaders was scheduled to arrive in Klungkung around 3:00 afternoon. BHA joins international coastal cleanup

SEMINYAK - Anantara Seminyak Resort & Spa, Bali in conjunction with Bali Hotels Association (BHA) proudly instigated the International Coastal Cleanup campaign by clearing debris along Seminyak Beach. BHA members were encouraged to participate and be part of the solution to help protect this popular coastal strip. Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup has developed over the past 25 years to become the world’s largest volunteer effort for ocean health. Each year millions of eco-friendly warriors from all over the world help to clear trash from the shores of lakes, streams, rivers and oceans. Thanks to these volunteers recording every article collected, Ocean Conservancy gains accurate insight into the manufactured items which are impacting our planet’s health. Cleanups alone can’t solve this pollution problem. Nevertheless, the Ocean Trash Index provides a snapshot of what’s polluting our oceans so we can work to prevent specific items from reaching the
water in the first place. BHA members together with Anantara Seminyak Resort & Spa, Bali, Rotary Club Seminyak, media representatives and a numbers of local schools gathered at 7am to clean the beach for one hour. The “Green Army” covered a distance of 2 kilometres picking up all kinds of rubbish along the way. Plastic bags, containers, cutlery, cans, cigarettes and household waste as well as abandoned shoes and fishing debris were just some of the 7,565 items collected. The total trash haul ended up weighing in at over 142,6 kilograms. “Bali Hotel Associations is extremely proud to take part in this eco-friendly initiative. It isdirectly in
line with our objective, which is to continuously strive to find ways to support programs that protect the environment,” commented Alessandro Migliore, Chairman of the Bali Hotels Association. “We hope that our actions will encourage locals and tourists alike to take note and assume responsibility for the daily consumption of one-time products that effectively contribute to the ocean trash problem. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Cage was named Best Global Actor in Motion Pictures at China’s Huading Awards on Monday night. NEW YORK — The foreign language Oscar competition this year will be wider than it ever has been before. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Monday that a record 73 countries, plus Hong Kong, Taiwan and the Palestinian territories, have submitted their entries to the Academy Awards. The acclaimed “Wadjda” from Saudi Arabia, about an 11-year-old girl’s quest to obtain a bicycle, is the country’s first submission. “All God’s Children” is also the first entry from Moldova. Montenegro, previously a part of Yugoslavia, submitted a film for the first time as an independent country: “Ace of Spades.” Entries are restricted to one per country and some nations’ choices were at odds with the film community. The agreement also includes support for the completion of the Doha round, boosting efficiency of logistics chain by up to 10 percent and implementing a reduction in barriers for environmental-friendly goods by 2015. Leaders also expressed their commitment to fighting protectionism, which hinders the world’s economic trade and growth. “We have agreed to extend our commitment till 2016 and reaffirmed our efforts to alleviate protectionism and trade limitations,” said SBY. Twenty-one economic leaders of the APEC region also expressed their determination to not limit trade with domestically oriented policies.
Director General of WTO Roberto Azevedo, who came as an invitee to the summit, earlier encouraged the 21 APEC economic leaders to adopt a multilateral trade system. “APEC consists of countries that are big economic players and traders. I believe they have always actively supported a multilateral trade system,” he said, after attending a panel session with APEC ministers on Saturday. Indonesia has also been encouraging an increase in multilateral service trade in the Asia-Pacific region and the development of APEC connectivity to support connectivity in ASEAN and Indonesia. APEC is an economic cooperation forum involving 21 economies in the Asia-Pacific region aimed at promoting free trade and economic cooperation in the region. The forum was established in 1989 and the summit in Bali is the second hosted by Indonesia after the event in Bogor, West Java, in 1994.
