LOS ANGELES - “Suicide Squad” smashed records, scoring a colossal $135.1 million debut despite suffering some of the worst reviews of the year. That sets a new high-water mark for an August launch, lapping “Guardians of the Galaxy’s” $94.3 million bow. It also ranks as a new personal best for star Will Smith, trumping “I Am Legend’s” $77.2 million debut in 2007. The action spectacle is also resonating with foreign crowds. “Suicide Squad” earned $132 million overseas from 57 territories, bringing its global total to more than $267 million. “It bested anything that we could have expected,” said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. distribution executive vice president. “The marketing campaign was brilliant and the

performances by the cast, starting with Will Smith, Margot Robbie, and Jared Leto were just extraordinary. They’re fun and wicked and fans enjoy it.” “Suicide Squad” has been one of the most hotly anticipated films of the summer. Buzz on the film has built steadily since Warner Bros. released a teaser trailer at last year’s Comic-Con that highlighted Jared Leto’s grill-sporting Joker and Margot Robbie looking demented in pigtails as Harley Quinn. However, the studio was caught off guard by the fusillade of withering reviews and their were concerns that the poor reception would dampen the

opening numbers. And boy were those reviews awful. The Wall Street Journal’s Joe Morgenstern called the film “...an all-out attack on the whole idea of entertainment,” New York’s David Edelstein branded it “the worst of the worst,” and MTV’s Amy Nicholson dismissed the picture as “two hours of padding.” Audiences appeared to like the film better than critics, handing the film a B+ CinemaScore. Younger consumers appear to like the film better than older moviegoers, with audiences under the age of 18 giving it an A rating. The question is will “Suicide Squad” show some endurance? “There’s a major disconnect with between what the critics are saying and what audiences are seeing,” said Goldstein. (rtr)

In the future, farmers will heavily depend on the efforts to increase the agricultural output by optimizing the existing land. There is small possibility to expand the agricultural areas. That is why Bali is in desperate need of agricultural intensification rather than the extension or expansion of land. “Extension effort is impossible because our agricultural area is certainly getting narrower. Indonesian group behind Singapore plot has “dozens of members” - police

JAKARTA - Indonesian authorities said on Monday several suspected Islamist radicals arrested last week on suspicion of plotting to attack neighbouring Singapore were part of a group that has “dozens of members” and has been active for two years. Counter-terrorism forces arrested six men on Friday on Batam island, just to the south of Singapore. The arrests comes amid mounting concern about the spread of Islamist ideology in Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation. National police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar said the group mostly recruited members online and was taking instructions from Bahrun Naim, an Indonesian who has

joined Islamic State (IS) in Syria. “The GRD group has been in operation for two years and has dozens of members,” Amar told a news conference in Jakarta, referring to the group named after its leader Gigih Rahmat Dewa. “This group is an extension of Bahrum Naim’s vision and mission. We cannot underestimate them.” Authorities in Indonesia say dozens of men have gone to join

Wiryatama considered that farmers over the years always planted haphazardly. As a result, when massive harvest comes no markets receive their agricultural products. Here, the role of government is essential to oversee whether what grown by farmers has been in accordance with the market needs. Similar effort must be applied to fertilizer, seed and the pesticides used by farmers. “By and large, farmers face difficulty to get fertilizer when they need it. Similar difficulty is also faced when needing insecticides. Moreover, they are also faced with fake insecticides like the fake vaccines. From the beginning, the agriculture is faced with fake seeds and fake pesticides,” said this former regent of Tabanan. Wiryatama claimed to have tried

one brand of insecticide used to eradicate ants. However, the ants did not die because the insecticide apparently has been mixed with mud. Then, there is also fake rice seed because when put into a bucket of water it floats. “Original seed will not be floating because it has been sorted. It is the theory, but the reality in the field is different. Thus, farmers have a lot of ‘disease’ such as fake seeds and fake fertilizers and fake pesticides so that they need supervision together because the agriculture essentially needs intensification,” he said. Related to the plummeted price during harvest season, Wiryatama asked the government to intervene to help the farmers. For example, the government of Tabanan and Badung make cooperation with village-owned enterprise (BUMDes) and farmers to buy the agricultural products. “When the prices go down, the

government has the role of purchasing the product. First of all, it must be kept in a warehouse, and then it will be gradually taken out. In this case, it is required a capital reserve, a bailout. So, farmers are first then given a bailout, while the government or cooperative also plays its role here,” explained this PDI-P politician. Other than the production of grain or rice, continued Wiryatama, local fruit commodities must also be accommodated by the government starting from the planting to the harvest. For example, the government helps inform local fruit growers what kinds of fruits are needed by hotels including how many it is needed must be measurable. “When there is excessive production, it must be considered whether it needs to be made a large-sized refrigerator so that later on it just needs to take out when required,” he said. The Head of the Tabanan Plantation and Forestry Agency, Roemy Liestyowati, not long ago explained that decline in the production of cacao and coffee plantations as indeed frequently happens every leap year. “Based on our experience of previous years, every leap year or four years there will be a decline in the production of plantations,” she said. This happens because it always rains during dry season every leap year. As a result of the rain, the pollination process necessarily happening finally fails because the flowers experience losses. Decline in the production will cause difficulties to farmers in meeting the export demand, in this case the exports of Robusta coffee. Actually in 2016, for instance, there has been Robusta coffee demand of eight containers to Korea. If calculated per container composed of about 18 tons, farmers have to meet the export demand of 144 tons. Regarding this request, added Roemy, there is no certainty how many containers can be fulfilled because the coffee harvest has just started. “If it continues to rain,

the drying of coffee will have problems, too,” she said. Even though it is difficult, her agency remains optimistic that farmers will be able to meet the export target to Korea. Other than coffee, in the current season many cacao plants are also attacked by black pod rot and rodents such as squirrels. However, in some areas such as Lumbung Sari hamlet, West Selemadeg, coffee plantation grows and bears fruit very well because of the compactness of farmers in maintaining their cacao plant routinely. “The success of cacao plantation lies in the will and compactness of farmers to take care of their cacao plants on a regular basis so as to avoid pests and it can bear fruit very well,” said Roemy. Wet drought has caused the production of plantation to decline and can be seen from the gradual price hike of the plantation production. Currently, the price of fermented cacao penetrated IDR 50,000 per kilogram while the price of Robusta coffee about a week ago touched IDR 25,000 per kilogram. (kmb24)

CAMBRIDGE — The idea of taking apart a rat’s heart and transforming it into a tissueengineered stingray first came to Kevin Kit Parker during a trip to the New England Aquarium with his daughter. Four years later, a robotic ray that swims toward light has made the cover of Science Magazine and is pushing the limits of what’s possible in the design of machines powered by living cells. A research team based at Harvard University’s Disease Biophysics Group, which Parker directs, created the translucent, penny-sized ray with a gold skeleton and silicone fins layered with the heart muscle cells of a rat. It’s remote-controlled, guided by a blinking blue flashlight. Each burst of blue sets off a cascade of signals through the cells, which have been genetically-engineered to respond to light. The contraction of the tissue creates a downward motion on the ray’s body. When the tissue relaxes, the gold skeleton recoils — moving the fin upward again in an undulating cycle that mimics the graceful swimming of a real ray or skate. Parker, whose research includes cardiac cell biology, launched the project as a method for learning more about the mysteries of the human heart and a step toward the far-off goal of building an artificial one. But the interdisciplinary project is also sparking interest in other fields, from marine biology to robotics.

Parker is not a roboticist. But as an Army veteran who did two tours in Afghanistan, he welcomes any part his stingrays could play in advancing the development of machines able to perform dangerous jobs. “Bio-hybrid machines — things with synthetic parts and living materials — they’re going to happen,” Parker said. “I’ve spent time getting shot at and seen people getting shot. If I could build a cyborg so my buddy doesn’t have to crawl into that ditch to look for an IED, I’d do that in a heartbeat.” When he first asked postdoctoral researcher Sung-Jin Park to help him create the stingray four years ago, the bench scientist was doubtful. “I had this whole idea of a laserguided, tissue-engineered stingray made out of rat,” Parker said. “He looked at me like a hog staring at a wristwatch. He was like, ‘Have I trusted my career to this yahoo’? I think he thought I was unglued.” Indeed, the project to build the ray was more difficult and expensive — close to $1 million, according to Parker 7/8— than either of them imagined. A mechanical engineer by training, Park had to delve into molecular and cell biology. The team pulled experts from

diverse fields, including an ichthyologist — someone who studies fish — to understand and help replicate a ray’s muscle structure and biomechanics. Their work was published in Science last month. Biologically-inspired robots aren’t new. A precursor to the stingray was a tissue-engineered jellyfish Parker helped create in 2012, also with the aim of understanding the muscular pumping of a heart. But one of the robotic stingray’s most intriguing contributions is the way it shows a glimpse of autonomy, said John Long, a professor of biology and cognitive science who directs Vassar College’s Interdisciplinary Robotics Research Laboratory. “By putting in the light control they have a way of controlling the cell without a nervous system,” said Long, who was not involved in the stingray research. “We used to control puppets with strings. Now we can do it with light.” Long says the creation could spark new research into autonomous, part-living machines. He envisions a time when a packet of micro-rays could be unleashed into a busted sewage pipe with simple sensors to measure acidity. (ap)

WASHINGTON — Eight months after raising hopes that they may have found an intriguing new particle that cannot be explained by the existing main physics theory, disappointed scientists are saying: Never mind. It was just a statistical burp, not a breakthrough, researchers reported Friday. “Basically we see nothing,” said Tiziano Camporesi, a chief scientific spokesman at the European Center for Nuclear Research . Early unconfirmed readings of a new particle in December by physicists at the center, called CERN, set the physics world abuzz. Scientists there had discovered the Higgs boson or “God particle” in 2012, and two new readings from the Large Hadron Collider made it seem as though they may had found a revolutionary new particle. In the months that followed, scientists pored over more data from high-speed atom crashes while theorists tried to figure out what it all means. But the new data ruled out any particle existing at the energy level they had been looking at. At a Chicago physics conference , Dave Charlton, another CERN chief scientific spokesman, said the additional data showed that what they had seen earlier was just a random “statistical fluke.” California Institute of Technology physicist Sean Carroll, who wasn’t part of the CERN team, said: “It’s a shame there wasn’t a particle there, but there aren’t any big ideas that would rise or fall on it being there.” The Large Hadron Collider is operating beyond expectations in its second extended run— which is still going on — and is providing more data than expected, Charlton and Camporesi said. Physicists from CERN presented more than 50 new results, but none of them are breakthrough findings that would change current theory. “Stay tuned, I don’t think we have lost hope yet,” Camporesi said. Iran executes nuclear scientist who was convicted of spying TEHRAN — Iran executed a nuclear scientist convicted of spying for the United States, an official said Sunday, acknowledging for the first time that the nation secretly detained and tried a man who was once heralded as a hero. Shahram Amiri defected to the U.S. at the height of Western efforts to thwart Iran’s nuclear program. When he returned in 2010, he was welcomed with flowers by government leaders and even went on the Iranian talk-show circuit. Then he mysteriously disappeared. He was hanged the same week that Tehran executed a group of militants, a year after Iran agreed to a landmark accord to limit uranium enrichment in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions. Amiri first vanished in 2009 while on a religious pilgrimage to Muslim holy sites in Saudi Arabia. A year later, he reappeared in a series of contradictory online videos filmed in the U.S. He then walked into the Iranian-interests section at the Pakistani Embassy in Washington and demanded to be sent home. In interviews, he described being kidnapped and held against his will by Saudi and American spies. U.S. officials said he was to receive millions of dollars for his help in understanding Iran’s nuclear program. Iranian judiciary spokesman Gholamhosein Mohseni Ejehi said Amiri “had access to the country’s secret and classified information” and “had been linked to our hostile and No. 1 enemy, America, the Great Satan.” The spokesman told journalists that Amiri had been tried in a death-penalty case that was upheld by an appeals court. He did not explain why authorities never announced the conviction, though he said Amiri had access to lawyers. News about Amiri, born in 1977, has been scant since his return to Iran. Last year, his father told the BBC’s Farsi-language service that his son had been held at a secret site. Ejehi said Amiri’s family mistakenly believed he received a 10-year prison sentence. On Tuesday, Iran announced it had executed a number of criminals, describing them mainly as militants from the country’s Kurdish minority. Then an obituary notice for Amiri circulated in his hometown of Kermanshah, a city 500 kilometers (310 miles) southwest of Tehran, according to the Iranian pro-reform daily newspaper Shargh. (ap)

Newspaper used to conjure barong and rangda

SINGARAJA - The processing of garbage in Buleleng is no easy task and the government has been working hard to deal with it. Young people howwever have been coming up with creative ways of recycling used materials into valuable crafts.

The youth of Tukadmungga village, for example, have been processing old newspapers into Barong and Rangda statues. Despite the difficulties that the youth faced when they first started, thanks to their perseverance and cooperation thay have managed to create som ewonderous things. “Previously old newspapers were just discarded but now we use it to make artistic products. We start by working as a team to create a frame onto which the newspaper is then pasted”, said Gede Feggy Supradnyan on Sunday (Aug. 7). The Barong and Rangda puppets are made in the wantilan hall of Tukadmungga Village and the papier-mâché scuptures that they create, using newspring, cardboard and fabric in much the same way that ogoh-ogoh demons are made. These youths learned the technique on their own. “Initially we had trouble but slowly we figured out how to make the different parts by working together. Hundreds of sheets of newsprint are glued onto the cardboard frame and then we cover it all in fabric”, explained one of the youths named Gede Ritter. Gede and friends were looking for a way to take advantage of materials that would normally be discarded in order to create unique crafts with economic value. “We found that newspaper could be used to make Barong and Rangda paper sculptures that can be used in performances resembling Calongarang but more comedy based. We hope to contineu developping our creativity in different forms”, he added. Headman of Tukadmungga, Made Arka, aknowledged that this Dharma Laksana customary youth club ii sindeed quite creative, adding that they can make the Barong and Randga sculptures in less than a week. “Our youth have artistic talent that allows them to make these sculptures in under a week. A tourist found dead in bathroom

DENPASAR - An Australian tourist named Norris Arthur Berger, 74, was found dead in the bathroom at contracted house located on Jalan Hang Tuah Gang Mawar X, Sanur Kaja, Denpasar, Sunday (Aug. 7). According to a friend of the victim, Ni Wayan Armini, 35, at 09:00 she came to the victim’s house because of having an appointment to go to Bedugul for a promenade. When knocking at the door for several times, the victim did not respond.

“Afterward, I asked for a duplicate key to the house owner, Ketut Senu,” she said. Finally, they opened the door using the duplicate key. They were shocked when seeing the victim lying lifeless in the bathroom. “The victim never complained of pain,” she said. As shortcut passes forest, govt should sit together

TABANAN - The Candi Kuning 2 Shorcut, planned to be built in 2017 would pass through an area of protected forest. Althouh part of the proposed shortcut would pass through land owned by the Bali’s Provincial Government the fact that protected forest land would be affected, it is essential that the govenrment evaluate the plan so as to avoide the adverse effects that would come from converting forested land into road. “Indeed, this poses a constraint. We are often dealing with protected forest. We agree the forest is great and must be sustained, but we do not the people of our society to remian poor because of the forest. If the forest remians then poverty also remains. I do not want this”, said Chairman of the Bali House of Representatives, Nyoman Adi Wiryatama, when met in Bedugul, Tabanan on Saturday (Aug. 6). Wiryatama added that every development project certainly requires a sacrifice. However, the ‘sacrifice’ must be minimized as much as possible. One way of doing this is by utilizing technology in the construction of the shortcut, whether in the form of a panel or bridge. Most importantly, the central and local governments must sit down together to discuss this issue. “Some parts of the land belong to provincial government. We will ask for this forest, and if possible, we will sit side by side like the buttons of shirt. If the above (central government—Ed) can be dealt with first then dealing with the lower buttons will be easy. Usually if the above is not dealt with, the bottom will be crippled” he explained. Wiryatama recalled the building of a road in the area of Titi Galar, Bedugul that runs from the corn statue to Penebel and that resulted in a polemic in 2004. At that time, he was serving as the regent of Tabanan and was reported to the minister and the chief of the National Police for having allegedly cleared the forest. Wiryatama argues that the forested area that was converted into road was barren or unproductive. “When passing into about 300 meters at the location, I was reported. With the gubernatorial policy, we indeed had differing opinions but there is little to no policy on the matter. The wisdom certainly violates the rules for the sake of public interest, but it was then accepted by society. As evidence, we have been using this road”, he said. Earlier, the Head of the Bali Public Works, I Nyoman Astawa Riadi, said that the Candi Kuning 2 shortcut is planned to mostly run through forest. It is not yet known whether this forested land conservation or protected forest. “Based on the explanation of the Chief of Asset Bureau, the land also belongs to the provincial government and community. Since the shortcut would pass through the forest, we will coordinate with the Forest Service” he said. Astawa added that the land needing to be acquired amonts to an area of ??5,775 square meters. There remains a dire lack of certain types of blood so many worry that if a family member were to need a blood transfusion that this blood type might not be available. Many people erronesouly believe that should a patietn need to have a blood transfusion that a family member could simply donate at that moment. However, the Blood Transfusion Unit (UTD) of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) in Bali has been trying to disuade people from thinking that way stating that 97.21 percent of the blood used for emmergency tranfusions comes from blood that has been previsouly voluntarily donated – not from the family of patients. The main reason for this is that it takes some 20 hours to process blood that has been donated, before it can be administered to the patient in need and in most cases that is just too long. Also there is the fact that blood that has been donated by a family member is not necessarily compatible with the patient who needs the blood. Directress of the Blood Transfu-

sion Unit of PMI Bali, A.A. Sagung Mas Dwipayani, said that this issue remains something that we all need to look at. The bllod transfusion unit continues to appeal to the public to give blood voluntarily and never refuses to give bllod to a patient in need, even if their family does not give blood. She added that even though the stocks of blood for a particular blood type is critically low at the moment, regular donors are still called upon to give blood. The health of blood donors is important, she explained.. “The point here is that when a patient’s family member gives blood, we need to undertake a complete screening to make sure that they are healthy”,

said Dwipayani. She added that the blood transfusion unit already has the medical record of regular donors on hand and although their blood is still tested every time they give blood, the whole screeingin process is done more quickluy that with first time donors. “Hospital attendants have confirmed to us that emmergency donors have been decreasing in number”, she said while adding that the district and municipal governments stil have many obstacles to overcome regarding this issue and that more people should be giving bloodon a regular basis. Head of the Bali Health Agency, Ketut Suarjaya, emphasised that the public needs to be educated about the importance of giving blood, because blood stocks in Bali are down and in the case of an emmergency the availability of usuable blood can make all the difference. “If we were to rely solely on existing stocks, there is great concern that we could run out as emmercies requiring bllod occur frequently”, he affirmed. More than 400 suspected drug dealers have been killed by police across the Philippines since Duterte took over, officials say. LONDON - The average pay of bosses in Britain’s FTSE 100 rose more than 10 percent in 2015 to an average of 5.5 million pounds, according to a survey that is likely to reinforce a drive by Prime Minister Theresa May to curb excessive pay. Britain’s new prime minister has denounced as irrational and unhealthy the yawning gap between the amounts paid to bosses and those paid to the average worker, vowing to better align incentives with the long-term interests of companies. A survey by the High Pay Centre said the average FTSE 100 chief executive’s pay package hit 5.48 million pounds ($7.15 million) in 2015, up from 4.96 million pounds in 2014, meaning CEOs now earn 140 times more than their employees on average. The survey said FTSE CEO pay had now risen by 33 percent since 2010. “There is apparently no end yet in sight to the rise and rise of FTSE 100 CEO pay packages,” director Stefan Stern said. “The High Pay Centre was delighted by Theresa May’s recent intervention on this issue. There now seems to be political will and momentum behind attempts to reform top pay.” The country has seen a resurgence in investor activism in the last year, with several FTSE 100 bosses criticised at annual general meetings for taking ever larger pay deals at a time of weak economic growth. May, who became prime minister in July, used a speech before she took office to set out her plans for the economy, arguing that it did not work for everyone in society and needed to be reformed. Her proposals included making shareholder votes on corporate pay binding. She also said she wanted to see more transparency around bonus targets and the publication of the ratio between a CEO’s pay and that of the average company worker. According to the survey, the three highest paid bosses in the blue-chip index were WPP’s Martin Sorrell, Tony Pidgeley at housebuilder Berkeley and Rakesh Kapoor at Reckitt Benckiser. The 70 million-pound pay package awarded to Sorrell was one of the biggest payouts in British history. A third of investors refused to back the deal while Sorrell, one of the best known businessmen in Britain who built the advertising group from scratch, said all his wealth and interests were tied up in the future of the company. Exports contracted 4.4 percent to $184.7 billion, a slight improvement over June’s 4.8 percent contraction, customs data showed Monday. Imports fell 12.5 percent to $132.4 billion, accelerating from a decline of 8.4 percent. Weak global demand has hampered efforts to shore up Chinese trade and stave off job losses in export industries. The contraction in imports reflects possible weakness in the domestic economy, but the figures also are depressed by a decline in prices of oil and other commodities. Chinese economic growth held

Govt confirms one more Indonesian abducted in Malaysian water

SOLO - Director of Citizen and Legal Entities Protection of the Foreign Affairs Ministry Lalu Muhammad Iqbal has confirmed that several gunmen have abducted an Indonesian captain of a fishing trawler in the Malaysian water. “We have been notified since August 5, that the abducted person is an Indonesian captain of a Malaysian flagged-fishing trawler, and it happened in the Malaysian water,” Iqbal said here on Sunday. Iqbal explained that the fishing trawler was attacked by the gunmen on August 3, at around 4 p.m. local time. There were two other crew members on board when the incident occurred, but the gunmen released them, and they reported the incident to police in Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia, on August 5. Following the report to the police, Iqbal said the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and consulate general in Kota Kinabalu worked closely with the local authorities, the freed crewmen, ship company, and the Philippine authority, to seek more detailed information. “Some information related to the incident and the abductions actors are still different one to another, so we still need to verify it,” Iqbal noted. According to a local newspaper, The Star, Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSC) director Datuk Wan Abdul Bari Wan Khalid confirmed a report had been filed by the owner of the fishing trawler on Saturday, two days after the abduction was said to happen. Khalid also told the newspaper that the incident did not look like the usual kidnapping and a police investigation is on progress. At the present, the two crewmen and the trawler are being held for investigations. Suicide bomber kills at least 50 at Pakistan hospital QUETTA - A suicide bomber in Pakistan killed at least 50 people and wounded dozens more in an attack on mourners gathered at a hospital in Quetta, according to officials in the violence-plagued southwestern province of Baluchistan. The bomber struck as more than 100 mourners, mostly lawyers and journalists, crowded into the emergency department to accompany the body of a prominent lawyer, who had been shot and killed in the city earlier in the day, Faridullah, a journalist who was among the wounded, told Reuters. Sarfaraz Bugti, the provincial home minister, said at least 50 people were killed, and more than that number were wounded, as the casualty toll spiked from initial estimates. “There are many wounded, so the death toll could rise,” said Rehmat Saleh Baloch, the provincial health minister. Television footage showed scenes of chaos, with panicked people fleeing through debris as smoke filled the hospital corridors. The motive behind the attack was unclear and no group had yet claimed responsibility, but several lawyers have been targeted during a recent spate of killings in Quetta.

The latest victim, Bilal Anwar Kasi, was shot and killed while on his way to the city’s main court complex, senior police official Nadeem Shah told Reuters. He was the president of Baluchistan Bar Association. The subsequent suicide attack appeared to target his mourners, Anwar ul Haq Kakar, a spokesman for the Baluchistan government, said. “It seems it was a pre-planned attack,” he said. Police cordoned off the hospital following the blast. Aside from a long-running separatist insurgency, and sectarian tensions, Baluchistan also suffers from rising crime. Quetta has also long been regarded as a base for the Afghan Taliban, whose leadership has regularly held meetings there in the past. LONDON - Delta Air Lines Inc said a “major system-wide network outage” on Monday had delayed flights worldwide and technicians were working to resolve the computer problem as soon as possible. Flights scheduled for departure were not taking off, but those already in the air were operating normally, Delta said in a statement. Delta operates 5,000 departures a day and is a member of the SkyTeam alliance alongside airlines including Air France-KLM . It also partners for transatlantic flights with Virgin Atlantic, which said its flights were operating normally but cautioned that passengers should check tickets in case their flight was due to be operated by Delta as part of a code share agreement. “Delta experienced a computer outage that has impacted flights scheduled for this morning,” said Delta, the world’s second largest airline measured by revenue passenger kilometres flown. “Our systems are down everywhere. Hopefully it won’t be much longer,” the airline said on Twitter. The outage was affecting flights globally, a London-based spokeswoman for the airline said. Passengers stuck in check-in queues in airports across the world, or on board planes waiting to depart took to Twitter to share photos and frustration at the delays. “1 hr.+ lines @HeathrowAirport for @Delta due to system outage,” tweeted user @MITJAKE with a picture of passengers waiting to check in. RIO DE JANEIRO - World number one Novak Djokovic was reduced to tears after suffering a shock first round 7-6(4) 7-6(2) loss to Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro in the men’s Olympic tennis tournament on Sunday. Djokovic has dominated the men’s game in recent years and had made it a priority to win an Olympic gold medal, the only major prize that still eludes him. “No doubt this is one of the toughest losses in my life and in my career,” a distraught Djokovic told reporters. “It’s not easy to handle, especially now, just after the wounds are still fresh.” After winning this year’s Australian and French Open titles, Djokovic was the favourite to add Olympic gold to his 12 grand slam titles and Del Potro was as surprised as anyone to see the Serb go out.

“I didn’t expect to beat Novak tonight,” said the 2009 U.S. Open champion, who has been battling a wrist injury for much of the season and is ranked 141st in the world. “But I played an amazing match, my forehand worked great.” The 27-year-old Argentine crunched 29 forehand winners in comparison to just seven by Djokovic, who lost a bronze medal match to Del Porto at the London Olympics four years ago. Del Potro, who was once ranked fourth highest in the world, said the performance against Djokovic gave him hope of fully overcoming his injury nightmare. “I felt once again I had the capability to play against the best in the world,” he said. The two men, who are also friends, were both visibly emotional and shared a warm embrace over the net at the end of the game in which a raucous Brazilian crowd produced

an electric atmosphere. “This kind of atmosphere I experience a few times in my life, mostly when I’m in my country. This felt like I was in my country. This felt like I was Brazilian,” said Djokovic. The Serb will get another chance to experience the Rio atmosphere when he teams up with Nenad Zimonjic to play Brazilian duo Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares in a second round men’s doubles match on Monday. Djokovic will be 33 by the time of the Tokyo 2020 Games meaning the Rio men’s doubles could be his best hope of achieving Olympic success.
