Cate Blanchett’s feminist wake-up call to Cannes
Cate Blanchett knew there was something seriously awry with the Cannes film festival when the winners of its top prize, the Palme d’Or, were gathered together to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2014. Among the sea of grey heads on the stage there was only one woman, Jane Campion, who had won for “The Piano” two decades earlier. “Sometimes things have to get that bad and that stark for us to say, ‘Hang on a minute. There’s something wrong -- literally -- with this picture’,” the actress said this week, days before heading the jury that will chose this year’s winner. With Cannes and the film industry still reeling from the Harvey Weinstein scandal, some saw her appointment as a quick-fix PR coup to head off critics. The world’s top film festival, which likes to think of itself as “the movie Olympics”, has long faced criticism for its “dismal” attitude to female directors. Only three of the 21 films in competition for the Palme d’Or are directed by women, the same number as last year. And the festival’s decision to lift its ban on controversial Danish director Lars Von Trier, who has faced sexual harassment claims from the singer Bjork and whose company has been hit by multiple accusations, further raised eyebrows. - ‘We are not going back’ But Blanchett, one of the few women in Hollywood with the clout to carry a movie single-handed, insists the film industry must change. The double Oscar winner supports the call for “inclusion riders” or “equality clauses”, which demand diversity in casting and were championed by actress Frances McDormand at the Oscars. She called McDormand’s speech “one of the highlights of my year” and has been been active in the Time’s Up movement set up by Hollywood stars to combat sexual harassment. Blanchett said the riders are “a litmus test. We have nothing to lose but progress”. If the producers do not match up to their commitments, they would have to pay a penalty that would help support female directors or other underrepresented groups. “We are not going back to ground zero,” Blanchett told the film industry bible Variety. “We are moving onward and forward from here. “Change is happening within the industry in a kind of positive, unstoppable way that will benefit not just women but everybody in the industry,” she added. ‘Avengers’ muscles rivals aside to continue box office dominance
“Avengers: Infinity War” flexed its considerable muscle anew this weekend in North American theaters, pulling in a robust $112.5 million and leaving other top films in its dust, according to industry estimates. The three-day take by the Disney/Marvel superhero epic gave it the secondhighest second weekend of all time, behind only “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Only five movies have hit the $100 million mark in their second weekends, according to Variety.com. “Avengers” sees a veritable army of superheroes -- including Dr. Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Ironman (Robert Downey Jr.) and Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) -- joining forces to save the universe from powerful purple alien Thanos (Josh Brolin). Globally, “Avengers” has hit the $1 billion mark in just 11 days -- the fastest ever -- and it has yet to open in China. But with its enormous success, “Avengers” has left little oxygen for its competitors. The second-highest

SEKINCHAN - From rural hamlets to the jungles of Borneo and bustling, modern Kuala Lumpur, Malaysians will vote Wednesday in one of the country’s closest ever polls. The country of 32 million people is a melting pot, home to a Muslim Malay majority, ethnic Chinese and Indian minorities, as well as a kaleidoscope of tribal groups. Malays provide the government with the bedrock of its support and enjoy a privileged position in society. The large Chinese community has dominated business, while traditionally working class Indians have made inroads into professions such as law and medicine. AFP talked to three voters from across Malaysia’s multi-ethnic spectrum:
- Malay villager Between a busy coastal road and expansive green paddy fields in the small town of Sekinchan, Noorfazilah Azis peels mangoes that she sells to passers-by from a make-shift stall. The widowed mother of two is from the Malay majority, which comprises about 60 percent of the population, and has traditionally been a strong supporter of the long-ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition. Malays are supported by a decades-old system of affirmative ac-
tion that gives them advantages such as priority for government jobs. Nevertheless many, like 27year-old Noorfazilah, still struggle to get by. Her main concern is the soaring cost of everyday goods, particularly of food. The massive 1MDB financial scandal that has ensnared Prime Minister Najib Razak is of little concern to her, just something for faraway politicians to bicker about. “For those of us who stay in the villages, that is not important. What is important is the cost of living,” she told AFP from her stall, where she sells fruit and corn as cars rumble noisily past. She said a basket of corn that might have cost 50 ringgit ($12)

TABANAN - Next October 2018 will surely become a long-awaited moment for tourism players in increasing their tourist visit. After the eruption of Mount Agung, a number of tourist attractions have decreased in tourist visits. The annual meeting of International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank to be held in Nusa Dua next October is expected to be a promotional event. Moreover, the delegates and their extended family are also scheduled to visit a number of tourist attractions. In Tabanan, two attractions are prepared for the visit of the delegates namely the Tanah Lot and Ulundanu Beratan. However, the Tabanan Tourism Office also keeps anticipating by preparing other tourist objects such as Jatiluwih and tourism villages. Based on the data of the tourism office, there are at least a number of tourism villages that have been prepared if there is a possibility for the delegates wishing to make a visit. In addition to tourist objects, Promotion Division Head at the Tabanan Tourism Office, I Wayan Budi Artana, said that tourism village is also prepared to comply with the provisions of Sapta Pesona (seven charms), especially in the field of sanitation, parking

His division together with the head of the Tourism Office will even continuously monitor the matter of sanitation to always give a concern and there is no garbage scattered when the delegates making a visit. Meanwhile, one of the tourist objects becoming the destination of the IMF delegate visit is the Jatiluwih. He claimed to have been ready to become one of the destinations to be visited. For Jatiluwih itself as conveyed by the manager, I Nengah Sutirtayasa, all this time, the visit is dominated by foreign tourists. The tourist visits to Jatiluwih from January to April 2018 reached 57,606 people. Meanwhile, in 2017 the number of tourist visit to Jatiluwih reached 250,953 people. Based on the data, according to I Nengah Sutirtayasa, the visit from January to April 2018 reached 46,345 foreign tourists, while domestic tourists reached 11,261 people. In the meantime, in 2017 the visit amounted to 211,288 foreign tourists and 39,665 domestic tourists. “Overall, the visit is dominated by foreign tourists,” he said. Foreign tourists making a visit to Jatiluwih include those from France, Italy and other European countries. “We hope that tourist visits to Jatiluwih tourist object continues to increase,” said Sutirtayasa. DENPASAR - The Association of Indonesia Tour and Travel Agency (ASITA) of Bali Chapter will work together with the Indonesia Tourist Attraction Association (PUTRI) of Bali Chapter in order to improve the quality of tourist object and attraction. Therefore, the constraints having been experienced are expected to be resolved. Chairman of ASITA Bali, Ketut Ardana, said the tourist object and tourist attraction managed by the government so far are difficult to be regulated in terms of sanitation, admission ticket, and services. As happened to Besakih tourist object, it increased ticket prices differently and quickly changed. This was revealed in the coordination meeting between ASITA Bali and PUTRI Bali on Monday (May 7). Therefore, ASITA asked PUTRI to embrace all the tourist objects in Bali to jointly promote tourism whether the tourist objects managed by the community, government or private sector, mainly the government-run tourist object. One of the factors, namely sanitation, is very important and has become a concern of the ASITA to bring its guests to the members of PUTRI. PUTRI is expected to make a commitment regarding the sanitation of tourist object, the price of admission ticket and services at the tourist objects. “Quality of the tourist object managed by the government is not as good as the ones managed by private sector. With the presence of PUTRI, it should be able to arrange this and can play its role so that we feel comfortable when bringing guests there,” he said. tract rate and published rate. “This is what we want from the government-run tourist objects,” he added. Points of the cooperation between the two parties are equally maintaining sanitation, comfort, security and mutually giving information as well as agreeing on the enactment of one-year admission ticket price. “Hopefully, this idea can be applied to all tourist objects, especially those managed by the government so that we can get ease,” he said. Meanwhile, Chairperson of the PUTRI Bali, Inda Trimafo Yudha, said the newly established PUTRI Bali which is less than a year needs the support of all parties so that all managers of tourist attractions can coalesce into the member of PUTRI. By that way, they can be easily supervised. In addition, the PUTRI will also coordinate with the head of tourism office in each district and municipality to help PUTRI in the data collection of tourist objects. “Maybe at the time of extending the permit, the tourist object and attraction is encouraged to join the PUTRI,” she said. By becoming a member of PUTRI, we can together keep the commitment to maintain the image of Bali tourism. PUTRI also hoped from the cooperation that ASITA can prioritize its guests to visit tourist object and attraction of the PUTRI members. It will also give a list of the tourist object and attraction belonging to PUTRI having good integrity to ASITA. Similarly, when PUTRI receives a new member, it will be submitted to ASITA. Wooden Philippine boats to retrace historic China voyage
Crafted from a centuries-old design, three identical wooden boats set off from the Philippine capital for China on Saturday to retrace a historic trip by a Filipino sultan and showcase longstanding maritime ties. The 29 crew members on the three vessels -- two propelled by engines and the third by sail -- hope to make it across the South China Sea, a near-1,000-kilometre (620-mile) voyage, to the eastern city of Xiamen by May 2. The 18-metre (60-foot) boats are replicas of a “balangay”, a type of vessel used in the region as far back as 320 AD. Sultan Paduka Batara -- who ruled part of what is the Philippines today -- sailed to China on a balangay in 1417 to pay tribute and to trade, Valdez said, but fell ill and died there. Spain later colonised the Philippine islands in the 16th century. Expedition leader Arturo Valdez hopes it is a case of fourth-time lucky: winds and rough seas forced his team back on three previous attempts using similar vessels. “This boat is a replica of an ancient boat. It is not an all-weather boat. You have to fix it up. It is very vulnerable to weather and sea,” he told reporters. Rough seas are forecast late next week. The state weather bureau in Manila expects a period of good weather from Saturday to the morning of May 2 but after that, conditions could get rough, he added. The crew, which includes three women, are hoping they can slip through before the bad weather hits their route, Valdez said. Engines were installed on two of the boats to comply with Chinese maritime regulations that prohibit wind-powered vessels from docking alone, Valdez said. Valdez, who previously led a Filipino expedition that climbed Mount Everest, said he is aware of the implications of the trip at a time when the Philippines and China still have a territorial conflict over parts of the South China Sea. But he said his voyage will demonstrate how the people of Southeast Asia crossed the high seas in the past to maintain contact. “These waters never divided us. These waters unified us,” he said. “And this boat, as a replica of an ancient boat, is a symbol of that relationship.” (afp)

Based on the data at the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Jembrana, in 2015 the unemployment rate remained in the range of 1.59 percent of the total number of labor force. However, in 2017 pursuant to the data of the Regional Development Planning Board (Bappeda) of Jembrana, it decreased 0.67 percent or about 1,000 labor forces. The head of the Jembrana Integrated Licensing and Investment Office (PMPTSPTK), Ni Nengah Wartini, said on Monday (May 7) that of the total labor force in Jembrana, there are still thousands of unemployed people. However, in general during these three years the number of unemployed people tends to decline. The emergence of new entrepreneurs both the small- to medium-sized businesses is able to recruit workers. “Based on our records (investment), there are 180 new entrepreneurs and have recruited nearly 750 people. Now,
it just needs to improve the competence. When the investment grows, it will increasingly absorb labor,” she explained. Labor Agency regularly organizes job fair program to bring together employers with prospective workers. This year, there are rural labor-intensive programs expected to further reduce the number of unemployed people in the areas. Starting this May, the village budget plan (APBDesa) is changed in accordance with the provisions of Regent Instruction where at least 30 percent of the village fund should be allocated for wages. This labor-intensive program must be executed to create job opportunities. Headman of Paksebali, I Putu Aryadi, said on Monday (May 7) that when it was first managed the tourist visit to Unda River reached 100 people per day. They usually come to spend time by taking selfie and some others take pre-wedding photos. When Mount Agung erupted, the tourist visit to Unda River dropped dramatically up to 60 percent. The management was also forced to close the object for about five months because the flowing water was turbid due to cold lava impact. “Since the water began to be clear, and the alert status of Mount Agung was lowered, we start to re-open for tourists,” he explained.
Aryadi explained that currently the level of tourist visits to Unda River object is pretty good. Each day the number of visit reaches 150 to 200 people. Moreover, when an event is held in Unda River the visit can reach over 200 people. The increase in the number of visits to the tourist object, he said, is influenced by the cooperation with rafting entrepreneurs. Within the cooperation, Unda River serves as the finish point of the rafting adventure activities. Since the number of visits has increased recently, Aryadi said his side has made a plan to re-arrange the area of the tourist object including the addition of facilities and rides such as swimming pool, flying fox, cycling and others. Through the village-owned enterprises (BUMDes), the other tourist objects at Paksebali village will also be developed such as trekking in the hills of Paksebali and spiritual sites of Taman Seganing. Local handicrafts will also be developed as attractions including cultural attraction such as Dewa Masraman and Melukat di Geni. (kmb40)

He also assured that this case becomes a lesson for his future performance so as to be more assertive in response to the existence of foreign workers that are working illegally in the realm of law. Addressing this, his office has established four teams to make the movement in dealing with the existence of illegal tour guide. “In one week, the four teams established have started to take action. Give us the opportunity to carry out this task. We also want to crack down on the presence of illegal foreign tour guides,” he said. Man accused of shooting interior minister appears in Pakistan court
MANILA - The US and Philippine militaries launched major exercises Monday aimed at fighting global terrorism, while staying mostly quiet on Beijing’s reported installation of missiles in the disputed South China Sea. The annual manoeuvres are the second to be held under Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who has set aside long-simmering friction over competing claims to the waters in order to court Chinese trade and investment. The 12-day exercises began less than a week after US network CNBC reported that the Chinese military had over the past month installed anti-ship and air-to-air defences on islands also claimed by the Philippines. “This exercise was scheduled whether those missiles were there or not,” US Lieutenant General Lawrence Nicholson told reporters in Manila. “The exercises really have very little to do with recent developments in the area,” said Nicholson, the US director of the “Balikatan” (“shoulder-to-shoulder”) manoeuvres. The South China Sea issue has been brewing for years, with Vietnam, Malaysia and others also staking claims to waters with vital global shipping routes and what are believed to be significant oil and natural gas deposits. Nicholson’s Filipino counterpart, Lieutenant-General Emmanuel Salamat, sidestepped the issue while highlighting the need to improve the capabilities of Filipino forces to fight terrorism.
Duterte’s predecessor, Benigno Aquino, had used the exercises to boost the Philippine military’s capability to deter China, which claims most of the South China Sea. However, Duterte refocused the joint exercises after he was elected in 2016, steering them towards addressing domestic problems. Last year Balikatan focused mainly on honing humanitarian responses to the Philippines’ frequent natural disasters. This year’s terror focus comes after Islamic State group supporters seized the southern Philippine city of Marawi in May last year, triggering a five-month battle with US-backed Filipino troops that killed some 1,200 people. “This is focusing mostly on countering terrorism... that will allow us to respond to a similar scenario in the future,” Salamat said. The US and Australia have pledged to provide more training and assistance to Filipino troops, who struggled in Marawi’s urban battleground after decades fighting low-intensity rural-based communist and Muslim insurgencies. Most of the 5,000 Filipino troops and 3,000 US counterparts taking part in the manoeuvres are from special operations units who will train in mock urban terrain to respond to “crises and calamities, either natural or man-made”, Salamat said. LAHORE - A man accused of shooting Pakistan’s interior minister in a suspected assassination attempt possibly linked to blasphemy appeared in court Monday, with the attack seen as an ominous sign for security ahead of nationwide elections. Abid Hussain appeared before the anti-terror court in Gujranwala city in Punjab province, where he was remanded into custody for ten days, police official Chaudhry Tariq told AFP. His appearance came one day after Ahsan Iqbal, 59, was shot in the right arm as he prepared to leave a public meeting in his constituency in Punjab late Sunday. A man identified by police as Hussain, said to be in his early 20s, was wrestled to the ground by officers and bystanders as he was preparing to fire a second shot. Police are investigating whether the attack could have had any religious motive. A local official told AFP that the shooter said he was inspired by a controversy last year in which a small amendment to the oath

German industrial orders slip further in March

Usaba Muhu-Muhu at Timbrah Customary Village
There is no day without a religious ceremony. It is the characteristic life on the Island of Bali or the Island of the Gods. One of them is the Usaba Muhu-Muhu at Timbrah customary village, Pertima, Karangasem. People at this village have a philosophy of high significance to maintain the integrity and harmony of their residents. It is reflected in the Usaba Muhu–Muhu ritual. This ceremony was held on Saturday (Jan. 9). It is implemented in the form of caru desa or animal sacrifice aiming to neutralize bhuta kala into bhuta hita. Thus, residents continue to live in harmony as well as the universe. Implementation of this tradition is starting from nyaga ritual. Three days before the Usaba MuhuMuhu, residents carry out this ritual to neutralize bhuta kala in smaller scale, so as not to disturb other’s courtyard. This ritual is also called metuun buah. At the time of Usaba Muhu-Muhu, balancing ritual is performed in a higher level by the customary village with the caru sacrificing a cow. Undagi procession when slaughtering cow for the caru oblation always draws the attention of surrounding residents. The cow tied to a concrete pole is slaughtered by the undagi and this lasts tensely. It is thrashing about when slaughtered so that makes people tense. However, this procession is more secure than a similar ritual at Asak village, where the cow is released
and then bombarded with swords, machetes and other sharp weapons, when the Usaba Kaulu held at the village. Nengah Sukada, the local community leader, conveyed that the tradition is held once a year, precisely every new moon of the seventh month in Balinese calendar or around January. Residents of the supporting villages and two sesabu hamlets come down to carry out the task of devotional works at their respective hamlet to prepare ritual means. After the procession is over, people carry out prayers at the Dalem Tengah Temple. Ritual at this temple is officiated over by great-grandfather and dahyang. Great-grandparent officiates over the offerings in the kemulan shrine on the pedestal, while the
dahyang officiates over the kemulan offerings under the pedestal. Interestingly, after saying prayers together, local residents ranging from parents to children join a shared meal or megibung, enjoying the beef as the remainder of the ritual means. Residents sit together in place that have been provided by customary village, such as meeting pavilion, long pavilion and gamelan troupe pavilion. Some other sources at the local village mention that the tradition of Usaba Muhu-Muhu is also considered as the implementation of the Shiva Purana, namely when Durgha goes up against the Mahisasura giant cow or buffalo. Today, it is celebrated as a form of human self-control in order to avoid animal nature. (kmb)

Nampin or chewing betel leaves is one of the traditions that remains strong amongst Balinese elders. According to one respected elder named Ni Ketut Darma, who still chews betel leaves everyday, tradtionally the ingredients for betwel chewing are kept in a special betel nut box called pabuan or pecanangan. “When we use this box at home we call it pabuan, but when we serve guests we call this penginangan, using more refined language” she explained. According to Grandma Darma, the betel nut box is made of wood in the long side shape where it generally consists of some compartments containing lime, betel leaves, gambier, betel nut, betel nut mortar and pestle or panyawisan, small knife, and caket (used to halve areca nut). She said that in the past the betel nut box was the first thing to be served to guests who came or when visiting other people’s homes. “Presenting betel nut box and nampin has become a tradition in
the life of Balinese people, until now this tradition remains to be implemented especially by parents like me,” she said. She added the betel nut box is not only served at home, but also at temple with a different designation. At temple, it is called pacanangan, functioned as the offerings presented to deities. Pabuan and pacanangan is basically not the same. Pabuan served at home usually contains lime, gambier, betel leaf, betel nut, betel nut mortar and pestle, small knife, and caket, while the pecanangan at temple has the same contents with additional ingredients like thread, money and fruits. When asked about how she feels when doing nampin, she just claimed to be accustomed to doing it. Men and women of her age usually do it. It is tasteless but the lips feel abrasive. It feels nothing due to the mixture with lime. “Our lips are abrasive, but I have been accustomed to the taste,” she said. (kmb)

Putin sworn in for fourth term as Russian president MOSCOW - Vladimir Putin was sworn in as Russia’s president for a fourth term on Monday, extending his almost two-decade rule by another six years at a time of high tension with his Western rivals. The 65-year-old, in power since 1999, is on course to become the longest-serving Russian leader since Joseph Stalin after his victory in March elections. Putin won nearly 77 percent of the vote in polls in which his most vocal opponent, Alexei Navalny, was banned from running. He has promised to use his fourth term to revitalise the economy. But he also faces a host of thorny international disputes. “I consider it my duty and my life’s aim to do everything possible for Russia, for its present and for its future,” Putin said at Monday’s swearing-in ceremony, with his hand on the Russian constitution. US President Donald Trump congratulated the Kremlin strongman, with White House press secretary Sarah Sanders telling reporters in Washington that Trump “looks forward to a time when we can hopefully have a good relationship with Russia. “However, the United States believes that everyone has a right to be heard and assemble peacefully,” she said. The currencies of countries recording surplus in international trade would be more resilient even could record appreciation in exchange rate, Mirza said in a national seminar on expansion and financing export oriented labor intensive industry” here on Monday. Deficit in current account is a condition when imports of goods and service exceed exports. Based on data at the Central Bureau of Statistic (BPS), in 2006, the country had a 3-percent surplus in its current account, but in 2011, the country began to record current account deficit of 0.2 percent that widened to 1.7 percent in 2017. Meanwhile, Thailand has continued to chalk up an increase in surplus of its current account from 1 percent in 2006, to 2.6 percent in 2011 and to 11.7 percent in 2017. Malaysia also has continued to post current account surplus although shrinking from 16.1 percent in 2006, to 11.2 percent in 2011, and to 3 percent in 2017. With the surpluses recorded by Thailand and Malaysia, the exchange rates of the currencies of the two countries against the U.S. dollar have appreciated year to date (29 December 2017 until 5 April 2018) by 2.66 percent and 2.77 percent respectively, when rupiah lost 2.67 percent of its value and Philippine peso depreciated 3.39 percent and India`s Rupee down 4.48 percent . In addition, the currencies of Thailand and Malaysia are more resilient in exchange rate because of substantial contribution from their tourism sector to their foreign exchange reserves. Based on data at the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), in 2016 the contribution of the tourism sectors to Thai foreign exchange reached US$49.9 billion. The contribution of tourism sector of Malaysian foreign exchange reserves was US$18.1 billion as against a contribution of the sector to Indonesia`s foreign exchange reserves of only US$11.3 billion. “Therefore , our policy is to push development of tourism and boost exports. Our foreign exchange reserves are not more than enough, but certainly we may not continue to use our foreign exchange reserve. We have to boost development of the real sector,” Mirza said. Rupiah has continued to weaken lately against the U.S. dollar. Based on the middle exchange rate of Bank Indonesia rupiah lost more value closing at the level of 13,956 per dollar from the level of 13,943 on Friday. (ant)

PM Li urges Chinese firms to prioritize Indonesian workers
BOGOR - China`s Prime Minister Li Keqiang has called on Chinese firms investing in Indonesia to give priority to recruiting local workers in their respective companies. “We have called on Chinese companies investing in Indonesia to employ mostly Indonesian workers,” Li stated at a joint press conference with Indonesian President Joko Widodo at the Bogor Presidential Palace on Monday. Li noted that with more job opportunities in Indonesia, both countries could benefit from the investment. On the other hand, the premier has called on the Indonesian government to simplify the administrative process for Chinese firms to invest in the country. The bilateral meeting between President Widodo and Premier Li also discussed issues on cooperation in Halal food and Muslim fashion. “We are pleased to invest in Indonesia in Halal food
and Muslim fashion. Thus, together we can develop third markets,” Li remarked. He believed that the cooperation can be improved further, as the Muslim population in China has reached 20 million. PM Li has expressed hope that China`s cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) would bring significant and strategic results. China has stressed its commitment to maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea. “Despite any dispute or disagreement, we will surely cooperate to maintain stability in the region,” he emphasized. Meanwhile, President Widodo noted that the ASEAN, which contributed significantly to peace and stability in the region, must improve its performance. The president has also called on China to support Palestine in its fight for freedom. PM Li is on a state visit to Indonesia on May 6-8. BERLIN - Veteran winger Franck Ribery, 35, has signed a one-year extension to stay at Bayern Munich until 2019, the German giants announced on Monday. “I am very happy to be able to play for another year at this great club,” said Ribery in a statement. “Munich has long since become a home for my family and I, therefore, am proud to be able to play in the FC Bayern shirt next season.” Ribery joined Bayern in 2007, scoring 80 goals in 247 Bundesliga appearances, and won the German league title for a joint record eighth time this season. “We are very pleased that Franck has been retained,” said Bayern’s sports director Hasan Salihamidzic. “This season, Franck has proved once again in the Bundesliga, as well as in the Champions League and German Cup, what he is capable of and what great quality he has. “He is also one of our crowd pleasers.” Despite a knee injury in October which kept him out for 10 games, Ribery, who will be 36 when his contract expires, has managed five goals in 19 league games this season. BERLIN - Veteran winger Franck Ribery, 35, has signed a one-year extension to stay at Bayern Munich until 2019, the German giants announced on Monday. “I am very happy to be able to play for another year at this great club,” said Ribery in a statement. “Munich has long since become a home for my family and I, therefore, am proud to be able to play in the FC Bayern shirt next season.” Ribery joined Bayern in 2007, scoring 80 goals in 247 Bundesliga appearances, and won the German league title for a joint record eighth time this season. “We are very pleased that Franck has been retained,” said Bayern’s sports director Hasan Salihamidzic. “This season, Franck has proved once again in the Bundesliga, as well as in the Champions League and German Cup, what he is capable of and what great quality he has. “He is also one of our crowd pleasers.” Despite a knee injury in October which kept him out for 10 games, Ribery, who will be 36 when his contract expires, has managed five goals in 19 league games this season. He was a key figure when Bayern won the treble in 2013 of Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League titles, providing 11 goals and 23 assists in a total of 43 matches. It was Ribery’s final pass which Arjen Robben converted for the winning goal at Wembley when Bayern beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in that year’s Champions League final. “When I came to Munich in 2007, I was looking to push my career to the next level,” Ribery wrote on Instagram. “But I never imagined winning eight German championships, the German Cup five times and the Champions League trophy with this club. “But what I found above all that success is a place called home. “Thanks to everyone who is supporting me, to my beloved family and friends, the best fans, team mates and staff. “Let’s work hard to make this time another glorious chapter in the story of the best club in the world.” However, according to reports, Ribery can expect to
fight for his place next season. Bayern are said to want to give priority to rising stars Serge Gnabry, 22, who will return from a loan spell at Hoffenheim, and Kingsley Coman, 21, who is currently sidelined by injury. Fellow veteran Robben, 34, has also been offered a year’s extension to his deal which expires in June, but the Dutch winger has yet to put pen to paper. German magazine Kicker report that Robben, who joined Bayern in 2009, will not announce his decision until the German Cup final, against Eintracht Frankfurt on May 19 in Berlin, as he considered other offers. LOS ANGELES - Dario Saric scored 25 points as the Philadelphia 76ers kept alive their NBA Eastern Conference playoff series with the Boston Celtics on Monday, powering to a 103-92 win to avoid a clean sweep. Putin sworn in for fourth term as Russian president MOSCOW - Vladimir Putin was sworn in as Russia’s president for a fourth term on Monday, extending his almost two-decade rule by another six years at a time of high tension with his Western rivals. The 65-year-old, in power since 1999, is on course to become the longest-serving Russian leader since Joseph Stalin after his victory in March elections. Putin won nearly 77 percent of the vote in polls in which his most vocal opponent, Alexei Navalny, was banned from running. He has promised to use his fourth term to revitalise the economy. But he also faces a host of thorny international disputes. “I consider it my duty and my life’s aim to do everything possible for Russia, for its present and for its future,” Putin said at Monday’s swearing-in ceremony, with his hand on the Russian constitution. US President Donald Trump congratulated the Kremlin strongman, with White House press secretary Sarah Sanders telling reporters in Washington that Trump “looks forward to a time when we can hopefully have a good relationship with Russia. “However, the United States believes that everyone has a right to be heard and assemble peacefully,” she said. YOGYAKARTA - Senior Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia Mirza Adityaswara said good export performance and tourism development could strengthen rupiah now falling in value against the U.S. dollar. The currencies of countries recording surplus in international trade would be more resilient even could record appreciation in exchange rate, Mirza said in a national seminar on expansion and financing export oriented labor intensive industry” here on Monday. Deficit in current account is a condition when imports of goods and service exceed exports. Based on data at the Central Bureau of Statistic (BPS), in 2006, the country had a 3-percent surplus in its current account, but in 2011, the country began to record current account deficit of 0.2 percent that widened to 1.7 percent in 2017. Meanwhile, Thailand has continued to chalk up an increase in surplus of its current account from 1 percent in 2006, to 2.6 percent in 2011 and to 11.7 percent in 2017. Malaysia also has continued to post current account surplus although shrinking from 16.1 percent in 2006, to 11.2 percent in 2011, and to 3 percent in 2017. With the surpluses recorded by Thailand and Malaysia, the exchange rates of the currencies of the two countries against the U.S. dollar have appreciated year to date (29 December 2017 until 5 April 2018) by 2.66 percent and 2.77 percent respectively, when rupiah lost 2.67 percent of its value and Philippine peso depreciated 3.39 percent and India`s Rupee down 4.48 percent . In addition, the currencies of Thailand and Malaysia are more resilient in exchange rate because of substantial contribution from their tourism sector to their foreign exchange reserves. Based on data at the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), in 2016 the contribution of the tourism sectors to Thai foreign exchange reached US$49.9 billion. The contribution of tourism sector of Malaysian foreign exchange reserves was US$18.1 billion as against a contribution of the sector to Indonesia`s foreign exchange reserves of only US$11.3 billion. “Therefore , our policy is to push development of tourism and boost exports. Our foreign exchange reserves are not more than enough, but certainly we may not continue to use our foreign exchange reserve. We have to boost development of the real sector,” Mirza said. Rupiah has continued to weaken lately against the U.S. dollar. Based on the middle exchange rate of Bank Indonesia rupiah lost more value closing at the level of 13,956 per dollar from the level of 13,943 on Friday. (ant)

PM Li urges Chinese firms to prioritize Indonesian workers
BOGOR - China`s Prime Minister Li Keqiang has called on Chinese firms investing in Indonesia to give priority to recruiting local workers in their respective companies. “We have called on Chinese companies investing in Indonesia to employ mostly Indonesian workers,” Li stated at a joint press conference with Indonesian President Joko Widodo at the Bogor Presidential Palace on Monday. Li noted that with more job opportunities in Indonesia, both countries could benefit from the investment. On the other hand, the premier has called on the Indonesian government to simplify the administrative process for Chinese firms to invest in the country. The bilateral meeting between President Widodo and Premier Li also discussed issues on cooperation in Halal food and Muslim fashion. “We are pleased to invest in Indonesia in Halal food
and Muslim fashion. Thus, together we can develop third markets,” Li remarked. He believed that the cooperation can be improved further, as the Muslim population in China has reached 20 million. PM Li has expressed hope that China`s cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) would bring significant and strategic results. China has stressed its commitment to maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea. “Despite any dispute or disagreement, we will surely cooperate to maintain stability in the region,” he emphasized. Meanwhile, President Widodo noted that the ASEAN, which contributed significantly to peace and stability in the region, must improve its performance. The president has also called on China to support Palestine in its fight for freedom. PM Li is on a state visit to Indonesia on May 6-8. Li was scheduled to visit the ASEAN Secretariat and attend the Indonesia-China Business Summit. (ant)

German industrial orders slip further in March
German industrial orders fell for the third month in a row in March, official data showed Monday, disappointing the expectations of analysts who had hoped for a rebound. New contracts for industrial firms fell back 0.9 percent, federal statistics authority Destatis said, far short of analysts’ predictions for growth of 0.6 percent. The figure dashes hopes for a rebound in the vital sector for Europe’s powerhouse, completing a first quarter when indicators showed ebbing momentum after hectic growth last year. One of them is the Usaba Muhu-Muhu at Timbrah customary village, Pertima, Karangasem. People at this village have a philosophy of high significance to maintain the integrity and harmony of their residents. It is reflected in the Usaba Muhu–Muhu ritual. This ceremony was held on Saturday (Jan. 9). It is implemented in the form of caru desa or animal sacrifice aiming to neutralize bhuta kala into bhuta hita. Thus, residents continue to live in harmony as well as the universe. Implementation of this tradition is starting from nyaga ritual. Three days before the Usaba MuhuMuhu, residents carry out this ritual to neutralize bhuta kala in smaller scale, so as not to disturb other’s courtyard. This ritual is also called metuun buah. Undagi procession when slaughtering cow for the caru oblation always draws the attention of surrounding residents. The cow tied to a concrete pole is slaughtered by the undagi and this lasts tensely. It is thrashing about when slaughtered so that makes people tense. However, this procession is more secure than a similar ritual at Asak village, where the cow is released
and then bombarded with swords, machetes and other sharp weapons, when the Usaba Kaulu held at the village. Nengah Sukada, the local community leader, conveyed that the tradition is held once a year, precisely every new moon of the seventh month in Balinese calendar or around January. Residents of the supporting villages and two sesabu hamlets come down to carry out the task of devotional works at their respective hamlet to prepare ritual means. After the procession is over, people carry out prayers at the Dalem Tengah Temple. Ritual at this temple is officiated over by great-grandfather and dahyang. Great-grandparent officiates over the offerings in the kemulan shrine on the pedestal, while the
dahyang officiates over the kemulan offerings under the pedestal. Interestingly, after saying prayers together, local residents ranging from parents to children join a shared meal or megibung, enjoying the beef as the remainder of the ritual means. Residents sit together in place that have been provided by customary village, such as meeting pavilion, long pavilion and gamelan troupe pavilion. Some other sources at the local village mention that the tradition of Usaba Muhu-Muhu is also considered as the implementation of the Shiva Purana, namely when Durgha goes up against the Mahisasura giant cow or buffalo. Nampin or chewing betel leaves is one of the traditions that remains strong amongst Balinese elders. According to one respected elder named Ni Ketut Darma, who still chews betel leaves everyday, tradtionally the ingredients for betwel chewing are kept in a special betel nut box called pabuan or pecanangan. “When we use this box at home we call it pabuan, but when we serve guests we call this penginangan, using more refined language” she explained. According to Grandma Darma, the betel nut box is made of wood in the long side shape where it generally consists of some compartments containing lime, betel leaves, gambier, betel nut, betel nut mortar and pestle or panyawisan, small knife, and caket (used to halve areca nut). She said that in the past the betel nut box was the first thing to be served to guests who came or when visiting other people’s homes. “Presenting betel nut box and nampin has become a tradition in
the life of Balinese people, until now this tradition remains to be implemented especially by parents like me,” she said. She added the betel nut box is not only served at home, but also at temple with a different designation. At temple, it is called pacanangan, functioned as the offerings presented to deities. Pabuan and pacanangan is basically not the same. Pabuan served at home usually contains lime, gambier, betel leaf, betel nut, betel nut mortar and pestle, small knife, and caket, while the pecanangan at temple has the same contents with additional ingredients like thread, money and fruits. When asked about how she feels when doing nampin, she just claimed to be accustomed to doing it. Men and women of her age usually do it. It is tasteless but the lips feel abrasive. It feels nothing due to the mixture with lime. “Our lips are abrasive, but I have been accustomed to the taste,” she said. (kmb)

mands submitted is to ask for the follow-up related to foreign guide from China namely Ahui who is suspected of masterminding the beating against local guide in Bali. Currently, his detention period for 3 months in the Immigration Office has ended. “We do not want the culprit named Li Huahui alias Ahui to be sentenced to deportation, because if deported, surely there is a time limit and he can return to take action in Bali,” he said. Meanwhile, the Head of the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, Amran Aris, confirmed that in this case his office is still working according to the authority and execution of the duties of immigration. Against Ahui’s case, his office decided to deport and within 6 months could not enter Indonesia. “That’s all we can affirm as immigration authority in this case,”
he concluded. He also assured that this case becomes a lesson for his future performance so as to be more assertive in response to the existence of foreign workers that are working illegally in the realm of law. Addressing this, his office has established four teams to make the movement in dealing with the existence of illegal tour guide. “In one week, the four teams established have started to take action. Give us the opportunity to carry out this task. We also want to crack down on the presence of illegal foreign tour guides,” he said. Regarding whether Ahui could be included in criminal matters, Amran asked one week for the masses so as to be able to show off evidence related to the beating case alleged that Ahui was involved in a criminal element. MANILA - The US and Philippine militaries launched major exercises Monday aimed at fighting global terrorism, while staying mostly quiet on Beijing’s reported installation of missiles in the disputed South China Sea. The annual manoeuvres are the second to be held under Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who has set aside long-simmering friction over competing claims to the waters in order to court Chinese trade and investment. The 12-day exercises began less than a week after US network CNBC reported that the Chinese military had over the past month installed anti-ship and air-to-air defences on islands also claimed by the Philippines. “This exercise was scheduled whether those missiles were there or not,” US Lieutenant General Lawrence Nicholson told reporters in Manila. “The exercises really have very little to do with recent developments in the area,” said Nicholson, the US director of the “Balikatan” (“shoulder-to-shoulder”) manoeuvres. The South China Sea issue has been brewing for years, with Vietnam, Malaysia and others also staking claims to waters with vital global shipping routes and what are believed to be significant oil and natural gas deposits. Nicholson’s Filipino counterpart, Lieutenant-General Emmanuel Salamat, sidestepped the issue while highlighting the need to improve the capabilities of Filipino forces to fight terrorism.
Duterte’s predecessor, Benigno Aquino, had used the exercises to boost the Philippine military’s capability to deter China, which claims most of the South China Sea. However, Duterte refocused the joint exercises after he was elected in 2016, steering them towards addressing domestic problems. Last year Balikatan focused mainly on honing humanitarian responses to the Philippines’ frequent natural disasters. This year’s terror focus comes after Islamic State group supporters seized the southern Philippine city of Marawi in May last year, triggering a five-month battle with US-backed Filipino troops that killed some 1,200 people. “This is focusing mostly on countering terrorism... that will allow us to respond to a similar scenario in the future,” Salamat said. The US and Australia have pledged to provide more training and assistance to Filipino troops, who struggled in Marawi’s urban battleground after decades fighting low-intensity rural-based communist and Muslim insurgencies. Most of the 5,000 Filipino troops and 3,000 US counterparts taking part in the manoeuvres are from special operations units who will train in mock urban terrain to respond to “crises and calamities, either natural or man-made”, Salamat said. LAHORE - A man accused of shooting Pakistan’s interior minister in a suspected assassination attempt possibly linked to blasphemy appeared in court Monday, with the attack seen as an ominous sign for security ahead of nationwide elections. Abid Hussain appeared before the anti-terror court in Gujranwala city in Punjab province, where he was remanded into custody for ten days, police official Chaudhry Tariq told AFP. His appearance came one day after Ahsan Iqbal, 59, was shot in the right arm as he prepared to leave a public meeting in his constituency in Punjab late Sunday. A man identified by police as Hussain, said to be in his early 20s, was wrestled to the ground by officers and bystanders as he was preparing to fire a second shot. Police are investigating whether the attack could have had any religious motive. A local official told AFP that the shooter said he was inspired by a controversy last year in which a small amendment to the oath

Wooden Philippine boats to retrace historic China voyage
Crafted from a centuries-old design, three identical wooden boats set off from the Philippine capital for China on Saturday to retrace a historic trip by a Filipino sultan and showcase longstanding maritime ties. The 29 crew members on the three vessels -- two propelled by engines and the third by sail -- hope to make it across the South China Sea, a near-1,000-kilometre (620-mile) voyage, to the eastern city of Xiamen by May 2. The 18-metre (60-foot) boats are replicas of a “balangay”, a type of vessel used in the region as far back as 320 AD. Sultan Paduka Batara -- who ruled part of what is the Philippines today -- sailed to China on a balangay in 1417 to pay tribute and to trade, Valdez said, but fell ill and died there. Spain later colonised the Philippine islands in the 16th century. Expedition leader Arturo Valdez hopes it is a case of fourth-time lucky: winds and rough seas forced his team back on three previous attempts using similar vessels. “This boat is a replica of an ancient boat. It is not an all-weather boat. You have to fix it up. It is very vulnerable to weather and sea,” he told reporters. Rough seas are forecast late next week. The state weather bureau in Manila expects a period of good weather from Saturday to the morning of May 2 but after that, conditions could get rough, he added. The crew, which includes three women, are hoping they can slip through before the bad weather hits their route, Valdez said. Engines were installed on two of the boats to comply with Chinese maritime regulations that prohibit wind-powered vessels from docking alone, Valdez said. Valdez, who previously led a Filipino expedition that climbed Mount Everest, said he is aware of the implications of the trip at a time when the Philippines and China still have a territorial conflict over parts of the South China Sea. But he said his voyage will demonstrate how the people of Southeast Asia crossed the high seas in the past to maintain contact. “These waters never divided us. Headman of Paksebali, I Putu Aryadi, said on Monday (May 7) that when it was first managed the tourist visit to Unda River reached 100 people per day. They usually come to spend time by taking selfie and some others take pre-wedding photos. When Mount Agung erupted, the tourist visit to Unda River dropped dramatically up to 60 percent. The management was also forced to close the object for about five months because the flowing water was turbid due to cold lava impact. “Since the water began to be clear, and the alert status of Mount Agung was lowered, we start to re-open for tourists,” he explained.
Aryadi explained that currently the level of tourist visits to Unda River object is pretty good. Each day the number of visit reaches 150 to 200 people. Moreover, when an event is held in Unda River the visit can reach over 200 people. The increase in the number of visits to the tourist object, he said, is influenced by the cooperation with rafting entrepreneurs. Within the cooperation, Unda River serves as the finish point of the rafting adventure activities. Since the number of visits has increased recently, Aryadi said his side has made a plan to re-arrange the area of the tourist object including the addition of facilities and rides such as swimming pool, flying fox, cycling and others. Through the village-owned enterprises (BUMDes), the other tourist objects at Paksebali village will also be developed such as trekking in the hills of Paksebali and spiritual sites of Taman Seganing. One of the factors, namely sanitation, is very important and has become a concern of the ASITA to bring its guests to the members of PUTRI. PUTRI is expected to make a commitment regarding the sanitation of tourist object, the price of admission ticket and services at the tourist objects. “Quality of the tourist object managed by the government is not as good as the ones managed by private sector. With the presence of PUTRI, it should be able to arrange this and can play its role so that we feel comfortable when bringing guests there,” he said. Cate Blanchett’s feminist wake-up call to Cannes
Cate Blanchett knew there was something seriously awry with the Cannes film festival when the winners of its top prize, the Palme d’Or, were gathered together to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2014. Among the sea of grey heads on the stage there was only one woman, Jane Campion, who had won for “The Piano” two decades earlier. “Sometimes things have to get that bad and that stark for us to say, ‘Hang on a minute. There’s something wrong -- literally -- with this picture’,” the actress said this week, days before heading the jury that will chose this year’s winner. With Cannes and the film industry still reeling from the Harvey Weinstein scandal, some saw her appointment as a quick-fix PR coup to head off critics. The world’s top film festival, which likes to think of itself as “the movie Olympics”, has long faced criticism for its “dismal” attitude to female directors. Only three of the 21 films in competition for the Palme d’Or are directed by women, the same number as last year. And the festival’s decision to lift its ban on controversial Danish director Lars Von Trier, who has faced sexual harassment claims from the singer Bjork and whose company has been hit by multiple accusations, further raised eyebrows. - ‘We are not going back’ But Blanchett, one of the few women in Hollywood with the clout to carry a movie single-handed, insists the film industry must change. The double Oscar winner supports the call for “inclusion riders” or “equality clauses”, which demand diversity in casting and were championed by actress Frances McDormand at the Oscars. She called McDormand’s speech “one of the highlights of my year” and has been been active in the Time’s Up movement set up by Hollywood stars to combat sexual harassment. Blanchett said the riders are “a litmus test. We have nothing to lose but progress”. If the producers do not match up to their commitments, they would have to pay a penalty that would help support female directors or other underrepresented groups. “We are not going back to ground zero,” Blanchett told the film industry bible Variety. “We are moving onward and forward from here. “Change is happening within the industry in a kind of positive, unstoppable way that will benefit not just women but everybody in the industry,” she added. ‘Avengers’ muscles rivals aside to continue box office dominance
“Avengers: Infinity War” flexed its considerable muscle anew this weekend in North American theaters, pulling in a robust $112.5 million and leaving other top films in its dust, according to industry estimates. The three-day take by the Disney/Marvel superhero epic gave it the secondhighest second weekend of all time, behind only “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Only five movies have hit the $100 million mark in their second weekends, according to Variety.com. “Avengers” sees a veritable army of superheroes -- including Dr. Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Ironman (Robert Downey Jr.) and Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) -- joining forces to save the universe from powerful purple alien Thanos (Josh Brolin). Globally, “Avengers” has hit the $1 billion mark in just 11 days -- the fastest ever -- and it has yet to open in China. But with its enormous success, “Avengers” has left little oxygen for its competitors. The second-highest

As Malaysian polls loom, hopes and fears for future

SEKINCHAN - From rural hamlets to the jungles of Borneo and bustling, modern Kuala Lumpur, Malaysians will vote Wednesday in one of the country’s closest ever polls. The country of 32 million people is a melting pot, home to a Muslim Malay majority, ethnic Chinese and Indian minorities, as well as a kaleidoscope of tribal groups. Malays provide the government with the bedrock of its support and enjoy a privileged position in society. The large Chinese community has dominated business, while traditionally working class Indians have made inroads into professions such as law and medicine. AFP talked to three voters from across Malaysia’s multi-ethnic spectrum:
- Malay villager Between a busy coastal road and expansive green paddy fields in the small town of Sekinchan, Noorfazilah Azis peels mangoes that she sells to passers-by from a make-shift stall. The widowed mother of two is from the Malay majority, which comprises about 60 percent of the population, and has traditionally been a strong supporter of the long-ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition. Malays are supported by a decades-old system of affirmative ac-
tion that gives them advantages such as priority for government jobs. Nevertheless many, like 27year-old Noorfazilah, still struggle to get by. Her main concern is the soaring cost of everyday goods, particularly of food. The massive 1MDB financial scandal that has ensnared Prime Minister Najib Razak is of little concern to her, just something for faraway politicians to bicker about. “For those of us who stay in the villages, that is not important. What is important is the cost of living,” she told AFP from her stall, where she sells fruit and corn as cars rumble noisily past. She said a basket of corn that might have cost 50 ringgit ($12)
