‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ Rockets to No. 1 With $145 Million

LOS ANGELES - And just like that, Star-Lord and his band of super buddies are back on top of the box office.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” blasted into domestic theaters this weekend to kick off the summer box office to the tune of $145 million at 4,347 locations. The latest from Disney and Marvel was expected to make $140 million, but possibly more by some analysts considering the studio’s track record and enthusiasm that the first go-around generated. “We feel great. It is a spectacular number, period,” said Disney’s distribution chief Dave Hollis. “This is such a fresh and exciting film ... it’s the kind of event that gets people excited about going to theaters.” Returning to deliver more bright colors, wise-cracks and another groovy soundtrack, James Gunn directed and scripted the movie starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper as the titular guardians. To avoid outdone by South Bali, Buleleng boost tourism investment POSSIBLY Buleleng district does not want be outdone by South Bali, so that it optimizes the development of tourism investment in recent years. This effort is taken because many tourism potentials in this region have not been managed optimally. The development itself is not only carried out by the government, but also by local community and the role of third party (investor—Ed) that have intensively worked on marine tourism, natural scenery, agro-tourism and cultural attractions. In line with the policy of central government, tourism development in Buleleng still refers to the national tourism strategic area (KSPN). In Bali alone, there are nine KSPNs where four of them are in Buleleng. They consist of the KSPN Bedugul covering the district of Tabanan and Buleleng; and the KSPN North Bali includes Lovina area currently becoming a tourist mascot of Buleleng up to Air Sanih in Kubutambahan and surrounding areas. In addition, two

other KSPNs are located in West Bali National Park covering Buleleng and Jembrana, and the KSPN Pemuteran and Menjangan Island. Of the four established KSPNs, the Buleleng tourism office recently continued to make efforts to develop and change the regulation. Each of the KSPN Buleleng has set up a tourist destination. Destination development has been conducted. Originally, it was only recorded to reach 19 destinations but now has increased to 86 destinations.

This development is based on the concept of 3A, namely Attraction, Amenity and Accessibility. Head of the Buleleng Tourism Office, Nyoman Sutrisna, said on Friday (May 5) that the development of tourism sector in the region remains to be dominated by third parties (investors). rants, the investors are also intent on managing villa business to the development of marine tourism or nature tourism. “In details, the percentage of tourism investment in our region is still mostly carried out by investors. Although investors still dominate the tourism development, lately local communities through community groups have begun to be inspired to develop the tourism sector. In terms of percentage, the development by local residents only reaches 10 percent. The vigorous development undertaken is tourism village or managing local tourist attraction such as waterfall, selfie location and the development of cultural tourism village of Bali Aga. “The ones managed by local community have small percentage, but this measure has been very good because the community or village youth begins to be moved not to become a spectator in their own country, but even competing to manage the potential at hand. One of them is the Bali Aga tourism village development continuing to move forward and able to lure foreign travelers to visit Buleleng,” he explained. What about the role of government? Sutrisna said the government itself has also helped develop tourism sector. Based on the record, the

tourism sector worked on by the government reaches 20 percent. The involvement of government itself is not competing against the development by local people. However, when more and more parties are participating in managing tourism potential in the region, it is believed the tourism industry will grow rapidly or even be able to defeat the development of famous tourism in South Bali. “Why the government is also managing it because according to the policy and regulation, the development of this industry also empowers the five pillars, namely the society, government, private sector, college and the mass media, so that the potential can be managed optimally,” he explained. In addition to also managing, the government also has a responsibility to equip supporting facilities or access to the tourist areas. One of the commitments to support the improvement of tourism facilities and infrastructure is disbursement of fund worth IDR 2.5 billion in 2017 allocated for the arrangement, maintenance and addition of facilities at tourist destinations. With this effort, the issues of infrastructure at tourist destination can be handled though carried out slowly. “People also improve or do repair to infrastructure of the community-managed objects, while the government itself also allocates a budget this year valued at IDR 2.5 billion to tourism development and infrastructure,” explained Sutrisna. Nevertheless, it should still be promoted. “Certainly, not everyone hears it. Do not let any governor that does not want to provide promotional funds due to this reason. Although it is important, subordinating tourism is not good,” he concluded.

Do not let the Bali’s leader consider that tourism affairs have become the affairs of others and then are promoted by others so as not to make further improvements. “Do not let the governor say that Bali has advanced, we do not have to work hard any longer,” he joked. So far, cooperation between the central and regional government in terms of tourism development in Bali has been running dynamically. He hoped it will continue to be maintained by the next leader. “If central government is traveling for promotion, the elements of the

region must be invited and helped financially or facilitated to make overseas promotions,” he said. Like in the development program, central government intensively provides guidance and budget for the development of tourist destinations in order to create branding. Regional promotions such as Bali are always involved. Researchers seek better ways to farm popular Pacific fish PORT ORCHARD — The dark gray fish prized for its buttery flavor live deep in the ocean, so researchers keep their lab cold and dark to simulate ideal conditions for sablefish larvae. A biologist shines his dim red headlamp and uses an ultrasound to scan the belly of an anesthetized sablefish about the length of his forearm to tell if it’s female and has eggs to collect. He gently squeezes out hundreds of tiny, translucent eggs into a glass beaker. After the eggs are fertilized externally, they’ll grow in large indoor tanks and some in floating net pens in Washington state’s Puget Sound to be used for research. At this federal marine research station near Seattle, scientists are studying sablefish genetics and investigating ways to make it easier and more efficient to commercially grow the fish. It is part of a larger effort by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to support marine aquaculture as a solution to feed a growing demand worldwide for seafood. People are consuming more fish than in previous decades, with average worldwide per capita consumption hitting 43 pounds (20 kilograms) a year, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Fish consumption is expected to grow even more in coming years. NOAA says aquaculture can relieve pressure on fishing populations and promote economic growth. Fishermen along the U.S. West Coast, mostly in Alaska, catch millions of pounds of wild sablefish each year but no commercial sablefish net-pen farming exists in the U.S. Sablefish, also known as black cod or butterfish, are long-lived species that is native to the northeast Pacific Ocean and highly valued in Asia for its beneficial nutrients and delicate flavor. The fish are grilled, smoked, poached, roasted or served as sushi. Michael Rubino, who directs the NOAA aquaculture program, noted that practices for farming fish in the U.S. meet very strict environmental regulations. But some critics worry large-scale farms could harm wild fish stocks and ocean health, and some commercial fishermen worry about potential competition. “This would be a big threat for us,” said Robert Alverson, executive director of the Fishing Vessel Owners’ Association, a Seattle-based group that represents about 95 commercial fishermen in Alaska, Oregon, Washington and California. In 2015, fisherman harvested about 35 million pounds (16 million kilograms) of sablefish worth $113 million in the United States, all along the U.S. West Coast. Of that, nearly two-thirds, or about 23 million pounds (10 million kilograms), were caught in Alaska, with smaller amounts in Oregon, Washington and California. Nearly half of the sablefish caught in the United States is exported, with a majority going to Japan. (ap)

In terms of emissions, the order of generator ranked from the cleanest to dirtiest is gas-fueled power plant, diesel-fueled power plant and steam-fueled power plant. The cleanest here refers

to a little exhaust gas emissions while the dirtiest is the generation of most exhaust gas emissions. All of these plants belong to the non-renewable generators. If sorted by the price side, the power generation by using coal is the cheapest. The second cheapest is gas and then followed by diesel and oil. Thus, oil fuel is the most expensive. (kmb42)

The unmanned X-37B, which resembles a miniature space shuttle, touched down at 7:47 a.m. EDT (1147 GMT) on a runway formerly used for landings of the now-mothballed space shuttles, the Air Force said in an email. The Boeing-built space plane blasted off in May 2015 from nearby Cape Canaveral Air Force Station aboard an Atlas 5 rocket built by United Launch Alliance, a partnership between Lockheed Martin Corp and Boeing Co. The X-37B, one of two in the Air Force fleet, conducted unspecified experiments for more than 700 days while in orbit. It was the fourth and lengthiest mission so far for the secretive

program, managed by the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office. The orbiters “perform risk reduction, experimentation and concept-of-operations development for reusable space vehicle technologies,” the Air Force has said without providing details. The cost of the program is also classified. The Secure World Foundation, a nonprofit group promoting the peaceful exploration of space, says the secrecy surrounding the X-37B suggests the presence of intelligence-related hardware being tested or evaluated aboard the craft. The vehicles are 29 feet (9 meters) long and have a wingspan

of 15 feet, making them about one quarter of the size of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s now-retired space shuttles. The X-37B, also known as Orbital Test Vehicle, or OTV, first flew in April 2010 and returned after eight months. A second mission launched in March 2011 and lasted 15 months, while a third took flight in December 2012 and returned after 22 months. Sunday’s landing was the X37B’s first in Florida. This 22year-old juvenile who daily works as a chef is also known to have experienced dengue symptoms since a month ago. I Nyoman Lama, hamlet chief of Pabean, when asked for his confirmation justified if the resident who died on Friday morning was caused by dengue. He said that Ni Wayan Mirah Adi Arini has been ill since April 19. “Mirah has received medical treatment at Primagana Hospital, but is reported to have died this Friday morning,”

he said. He disclosed that since February 2017 there have been about 25 cases of dengue fever at Pabean hamlet. One by one of local residents suffered the dengue, but only this time it claimed casualty. “Of the 25 cases, some have recovered and only Mirah experienced the condition like this,” he said. He recognized that all this time the effort to handle dengue is quite lacking. Moreover, since February of this year, the fogging has been held for two times only, whereas his authority has repeatedly filed the fogging but was never realized. “The officer just came down after there is resident reported to have died of dengue. We are then directed to eradicate mosquito nests,” he said.

BEIJING - Up to 5,000 ethnic Uighurs from China’s violence-prone far western region of Xinjiang are fighting in various militant groups in Syria, the Syrian ambassador to China said on Monday, adding that Beijing should be extremely concerned about it. China is worried that Uighurs, a mostly Muslim people who speak a Turkic language, have gone to Syria and Iraq to fight for militants there, having travelled illegally via Southeast Asia and Turkey. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the killing of a Chinese hostage in 2015, highlighting China’s concern about Uighurs it says are fighting in the Middle East. Hundreds of people have been killed in Xinjiang in the past few years, most in unrest between Uighurs and ethnic majority Han Chinese. The government blames the unrest on Islamist militants who want a separate state called East Turkestan. Syria’s ambassador in Beijing, Imad Moustapha, told Reuters on the sidelines of a business forum that while some of the Uighurs were fighting with Islamic State, most were fighting “under their own banner” to promote their separatist cause.

“Our estimated numbers, because of the numbers we fight against, we kill, we capture, we wound, would be around 4-5,000 Xinjiang jihadists,” he said. “China as well as every other country should be extremely concerned.” Beijing has never given a number for how many Uighurs it believes are fighting in the Middle East, but has repeatedly warned they pose a serious threat to China. It is not possible to independently verify the number of Uighurs in Syria. Rights groups and Uighur exiles say many Uighurs have fled to Turkey simply to escape Chinese repression at home, accusations Beijing denies. Moustapha said China did not pick favourites with rebel groups, like Western countries, and China and Syria were cooperating to fight the threat. “They don’t have a mixed message,” he said, referring to China. “They understand the true nature of the ultra-Islamic jihadi doctrine of these groups. Banks planning to move 9,000 jobs from Britain because of Brexit

LONDON - The largest global banks in London plan to move about 9,000 jobs to the continent in the next two years, public statements and information from sources shows, as the exodus of finance jobs starts to take shape. Last week Standard Chartered and JPMorgan were the latest global banks to outline plans for their European operations after Brexit. They are among a growing number of lenders pushing ahead with plans to move operations from London. Goldman Sachs chief executive Lloyd Blankfein said in an interview on Friday that London’s growth as a financial centre could “stall” as a result of the upheaval caused by Brexit. Thirteen major banks including Goldman Sachs, UBS, and Citigroup have given an indication of how they would bulk up their operations in Europe to secure market access to the European Union’s single market when Britain leaves the bloc. Talks with financial authorities in Europe have been underway for several months, but banks are increasingly firming up plans to move staff and operations. “It’s full speed ahead. We are in full motion with our contingency planning,” said the head of investment banking at one global bank in London. “There’s no waiting.” Although the moves would represent about 2 percent of London’s finance jobs, Britain’s tax revenues could be hit if it loses rich taxpayers working in financial services. The Institute for Fiscal Studies - a think tank focused on budget issues - said in a report on Thursday the rest of the population will have to pay more if top earners move. The exact number of jobs to leave will depend on the deal the British government strikes with the EU. Some politicians say bankers have exaggerated the threat to the economy from Brexit. The plans of large banks such as Credit Suisse and Bank of America and many smaller banks are still unknown. Frankfurt and Dublin are emerging as the biggest winners from the relocation plans. Six of the 13 banks favour opening a new office or moving the bulk their operations to Frankfurt. Three of the banks will look to expand in Dublin. Deutsche Bank said on Apr. 26 up to 4,000 UK jobs could be moved to Frankfurt and other locations in the EU as a result of Brexit - the largest potential move of any bank. JPMorgan last week announced plans to move hundreds of roles to three European cities in the next two years. This is still significantly lower than the 4,000 figure JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon first estimated before the vote. Estimates for possible finance-related job losses from Brexit are on a broad range from 4,000 to 232,000, according to separate reports by Oliver Wyman and Ernst & Young.(rtr)

China’s April trade growth slows as commodities, electronics demand cools

Beijing - China’s import growth slowed faster than expected in April, as inbound shipments of commodities such as iron ore and copper weakened, while export growth more than halved, in line with a general cooling in demand for electronic gadgets. China’s April imports rose 11.9 percent, cooling from March’s 20.3 percent rise, official data showed on Monday, and missing analysts’ expectations for an 18 percent rise. Exports rose 8.0 percent from a year earlier, slowing from a 16.4 percent rise in the previous month and short of expectations of 10.4 percent. While the data shows trade remained robust at the beginning of the second quarter, analysts say the spurt in China’s economic growth seen in the first three months of the year may be as good as it gets as policymakers seek to tighten speculative investment, especially in the property sector. “Looking ahead, we expect export growth to hold up well given the relatively bright outlook for the global economy this year,” Capital Economics China economist Julian Evans-Pritchard said in a note. “Growth in inbound shipments will continue to face headwinds, however. In particular, policy tightening will further weigh on domestic demand in coming quarters.” April’s numbers left the country with a trade surplus of $38.05 billion,

which compared with forecasts for $35.50 billion, and above $23.93 billion in March. The April trade figures are preliminary, with revised data due on May 23. China’s imports of crude oil, iron ore and copper all fell by volume compared with March, with the data in line with a recent survey of purchasing managers in the manufacturing sector showing April expansion was the slowest in six months. Despite the slowdown, imports year-to-date are still up 20.8 percent by value, compared with 8.1 percent growth for exports over the first four months, though analysts say imports could slow further this year. While China’s economy grew faster than expected in the first quarter, policymakers have moved to reduce financial risks in the economy and stamp out speculative activity in the property market. Commodity imports have also been hit by falling prices, with iron ore and steel hitting multi-month lows on China’s future markets in April

amid concern over rising inventories. China’s producer price inflation slowed in March for the first time in seven months, with price gains expected to continue to cool. Exports of electronics and machinery products increased 2 percent year-on-year in April, customs data showed, slowing from 12.3 percent growth in March. FRICTION China’s surplus with the United States widened in April, meaning pressure from the U.S. for action on the trade imbalance is not likely to go away anytime soon. The surplus with the U.S. was $21.34 billion in April, up from $17.74 billion in March and higher than the year-ago period, according to data from China’s customs bureau. The people of Tanganan follow a pattern of life determined by customary rules or bylawas, known as awig-awig. The design and spatial layout of the buildings of Teganan are still original and thus comply with customary rules regarding architecture giving this village a unique appearance. Tenganan also has a distinctive traditional attire made from geringsing woven fabric. The people of Tenganan and other Bali Aga villages have different beliefs than the rest of the Balinese. For example the people of Tenganan do not recognize caste. Tenganan village also has a unique tradition known as the pandanus war named for the thorny pandanus leaves with which the participants are armed as this ceremonial yet visceral ‘war’ every June. Macron plans to tackle a decade of slow growth and rising unemployment by overhauling France’s labour market, simplifying the tax and pension systems, paring back regulations and spending more on education, not least in deprived areas. Le Pen offered a radically different vision, proposing to pull France out of the euro, hold a referendum on European Union membership, and impose protectionist trade policies to shield French workers from what she called “savage globalisation”. Benjamin Boss, a 26-year-old bank worker, on Monday contrasted Macron’s win with Britain’s vote last year to leave the European Union and the election of Donald Trump as U.S. president. He said France had rejected those who wanted to “build borders and walls, and reject immigrants”. “Now we have a person who really wants progress, so it’s absolutely exceptional,” he said. Macron wins French presidency, to European allies’ relief

PARIS - Emmanuel Macron was elected French president on Sunday with a business-friendly vision of European integration, defeating Marine Le Pen, a far-right nationalist who threatened to take France out of the European Union. The centrist’s emphatic victory, which also smashed the dominance of France’s mainstream parties, will bring huge relief to European allies who had feared another populist upheaval to follow Britain’s vote to quit the EU and Donald Trump’s election as U.S. president. The euro currency, hit a sixmonth high agaisnt the dollar whiel Asian shares gained and U.S. stocks brfiefly touched a record high. With virtually all votes counted, Macron had topped 66 percent against just under 34 percent for Le Pen - a gap wider than the 20 or so percentage points that pre-election surveys had suggested. Even so, it was a record performance for the National Front, a party whose anti-immigrant policies once made it a pariah, and underlined the scale of the divisions that Macron must now try to heal. JAKARTA - Indonesia has launched an investigation into accusations of mistreatment by prison guards, after around 350 inmates broke out of an overcrowded jail on Sumatra island in Riau Province last week, an official said on Monday. Three days after the mass escape, 151 prisoners were still on the run and 197 have been recaptured, Ferdinand Siagian, the head of Riau Province’s Law Ministry office, which oversees Pekanbaru prison, told Reuters. “We are carrying out a deep investigation into the serving officers,” said Siagian, adding that the warden of the prison had been transferred to a different post. Before the prison break, prisoners had complained about mistreatment, accusing some

guards of violence, Siagian told Metro TV on Friday. Family members of Pekanbaru inmates also said guards had extorted money from prisoners and their families to ensure they had sleeping space or to speed up visits, according to media. The Pekanbaru prison housed about 1,800 prisoners, but was only meant to hold up to 700 inmates, a Riau police spokesman said. To address overcrowding, Siagian said Riau’s Law Ministry office was building a new prison to house drug-related inmates. PALU - The Palu city branch of the Indonesian Council of Islamic Scholars (MUI), Central Sulawesi, told religious leaders in the region to be united in defending the state ideology Pancasila and the integrity of the Unitary State of Indonesia. Chairman of the Palu MUI Prof. Dr. H. Zainal Abidin said Pancasila as a state ideology has to be defended and may not be replaced with other ideology. “Pancasila has become a principle that units us as a nation under the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia,” the professor said. The expert in modern Islam noted there were lately certain groups organizing move against the state ideology and the motto of Unity in Diversity. The motto of Unity in Diversity in the Unitary State needs to be strengthened and improved in quality by involving religious leaders of all faiths, he said.

He said the threat has to be seriously addressed before it is out of control, adding participation and involvement of religious leaders is determinant to defend the state and the state philosophy. “Religious leaders - Islam, Christian, Hindu and Buddha, etc.- should need to take active participation in maintaining the national integrity,” he said. The rector of the State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Palu described the threat to national integrity as serious that has to be dealt with seriously in addition to intolerance, radicalism and group that seeks to replace Pancasila. “MUI as a religious proselytizing agency would come to the people to ask them to maintain and promote religious harmony,” he said. Earlier in Jakarta, MUI Chairman KH Maruf Amin said Indonesia has Indonesia adopted and agrees with system of republic as a national pillar.

We no longer need to talk about khilafah,” Maruf Amin said after the opening of a Muslim Economic Congress 2017 in the capital city last month. WASHINGTON — Isaiah Thomas feels as though he was shut down by the Washington Wizards and the referees in Game 4. Thomas said after the Boston Celtics’ 121-102 loss Sunday that the officiating needs to change as the NBA second-round series continues after the Wizards played him hard in holding him to two points after the first 15 minutes. “They were very physical. The refs were allowing them to hold and grab and do all those things,” Thomas said. “It’s got to be called differently. ... I can’t be allowed to be held and grabbed every pin-down, every screen and I don’t even shoot one free throw. I play the same way each and every night. That has to change.” Thomas acknowledged that the Wizards’ 26-0 third-quarter run was the reason for the result, not the officiating. But with the series returning to Boston for Game 5 on Wednesday, he began to lobby for more calls after not going to the free throw line once. Critics question Mourinho’s negative approach

LONDON - For all his mitigating talk of injuries and Europa League commitments, Manchester United’s Jose Mourinho is struggling to throw off his reputation as a risk-averse manager whose teams no longer match their main rivals. A blizzard of statistics accompanies each Premier League games these days and Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at Arsenal threw up a particularly damning one - no Mourinho team has scored away against a big six team since January 2015 when Chelsea lost 5-3 to Spurs. This season United have appeared particularly negative in drawing blanks at every major rival, with the same expected at Tottenham Hotspur next Sunday when Mourinho predicted it will be impossible to compete properly three days after the Europa League semi-final second leg against Celta Vigo. Not everyone buys into his logic, however, with former Ireland striker Tony Cascarino among several accusing him of negativity. “Jose Mourinho isn’t doing enough with this Manchester United team,” wrote Cascarino in the Times. “We know he can be conservative away from home but he’s showing the opposition too much respect by sitting deep and not attacking away from Old Trafford. There’s

almost a sense of fear about the players and that isn’t what United fans expect. “At the minute there is little for their rivals to worry about.” Anyone who witnessed the bank of United midfielders camping in front of the defence on Sunday would struggle to disagree. Mourinho believes it will be “impossible” to finish in the top four but that might be down to his own negativity in a season when other teams, most notably Spurs, have reaped rewards for adventure. Against Arsenal, Mourinho was probably alone in quibbling with the result. “We didn’t deserve to lose,” he said. “The game was under control. Our chances were the big chances of the match. I was happy with the players.” Among the standouts was Italian full back Matteo Darmian who man-marked Mesut Ozil whenever the German ghosted into United’s half, but critics might argue with the negative brief. So far this season, United have also scrambled goalless draws at Liverpool and Manchester City, appearing second best in both games, and lost

4-0 at Chelsea. Defeat at Spurs could see them slip to sixth, having already drawn 14 games this season. “I don’t ever see United playing the way certain supporters want (with wingers providing width),” former Arsenal and England defender Nigel Winterburn told Sky Sports. “But Jose Mourinho will say ‘yes but I will win you trophies’.” The manager’s credit column this season already contains the League Cup, with the Europa League possibly to come. While most clubs would equate that with success, United are different. How they play matters and qualification for next season’s Champions League, which will be secured if they triumph in the May 24 Europa League final in Sweden, might further expose the deficiencies of the Mourinho brand. If they cannot travel to their major English rivals and win, what chance do they have at the Nou Camp or the Bernabeu where Real Madrid and Barcelona usually score for fun? So next season could define Mourinho. The very least expected after another summer of heavy spending is that United unleash their creative talent, not ask those players to track back and scramble more draws.(rtr)

MANAMA — Mahfuza Akhter of Bangladesh has beaten Australian rival Moya Dodd for a seat on the FIFA Council reserved for an Asian woman. Just before the Asian Football Confederation vote Monday, Palestinian and North Korean candidates withdrew. Akhter, a member of the AFC executive committee, has a term through 2019 on the FIFA Council after beating Dodd 27-17. Dodd served on FIFA’s ruling body from 2013-16. Three men who were seeking three other Asian seats on the FIFA Council were confirmed by acclamation: Zhang Jian of China, Mariano Varaneta of Philippines and Chung Mong-gyu of South Korea.
