McMurtry revisits American West in newest book Associated Press Writer

ARCHER CITY, Texas — Standing among the towering shelves in his bookstore in the small Texas town where he grew up, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Larry McMurtry says he has a need to be among books. “I’m very attached to the books. I need them. I need to be among them,” said McMurtry, 77, whose rare and used bookstore in Archer City contains about 200,000 volumes, while the library in his nearby home holds about 28,000. McMurtry is the author of almost 50 books including the novels “Lonesome Dove,” ‘’The Last Picture Show” and “Terms of Endearment,” and biographies and essay collections. He has had simultaneous careers as a screenwriter and bookseller. In his new novel, “The Last Kind Words Saloon,” he again takes readers to the American West — this time peeking into the lives of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday as they ramble through Texas, Colorado and Arizona. “I usually start a book with some notion about a character that I’m curious about or interested in,” McMurtry said in an interview. “And I think that’s what I did here. I kind of wanted to demythologize” Earp and Holliday. “’Lonesome Dove’ was an effort to kind of demythologize the

myth of the Old West, but it kind of came to people won’t let you. They’re going to twist it into something romantic no matter what you do.” McMurtry spoke Wednesday night — in what likely will be his only public appearance for the book — as part of the Dallas Museum of Art’s “Arts & Letters Live” speakers series. He divides his time between Tucson, Arizona, and Archer City, a wind-swept town with a population of about 1,800 located about 140 miles northwest of Dallas. “My gig in Dallas is my book tour for this one,” he said. Beth Wasson, who attended the museum event, said she couldn’t miss an opportunity to see one of her favorite authors in person. She said she enjoys his

books for his character development and is in awe of his ability to write about both modern day and the Old West. “Just the titles of his books tell a story,” she said. “The Last Kind Words Saloon” features historical figures including Earp, Holliday, Buffalo Bill Cody and Charles Goodnight, along with fictional characters such as journalist Nellie Courtright, who appeared in his novel “Telegraph Days.” McMurtry said he enjoys revisiting characters, including Earp and Holliday. “That’s fun, to go back and see your characters at different stages of their lives,” he said, noting that he followed the characters from “The Last Picture Show” through several books, marking their transformation from teenagers to old men. Andrew Graybill, director of the Clements Center for Southwest Studies at Southern Methodist University, said McMurtry cleverly brings together famous characters of the American West in his new book. “Putting them on the stage together at the same time — I think it’s a wonderful way to undercut and subvert these myths,” said Graybill, who introduced McMurtry at the Dallas event.

Picasso’s ‘The Rescue’ auctioned for $31.5M

NEW YORK — Pablo Picasso’s colorful 1932 oil painting “The Rescue” sold for $31.5 million at a New York auction Wednesday, far exceeding its $14 million to $18 million estimate. “The Rescue” led the bidding at a Sotheby’s sale of impressionist and modern art. The auction house sold 50 pieces, raising about $219 million. It was the second straight night a painting by the Cubist master changed hands for a big price. Picasso’s 1942 painting of his mistress in a purple dress titled “Portrait of Dora Maar” sold Tuesday for $22.5 million at Christie’s. Henri Matisse’s “Morning Session,” a 1924 oil of the artist’s assistant, Henriette Darricarrere, sold for $19.2 million on Wednesday. Claude Monet’s “Japanese Bridge” went for $15.8 million while his “On the Cliff at Pourville” netted $8.2 million. Wednesday’s sale featured four sculptures and an oil painting by Alberto Giacometti. Meanwhile, Kenny C., an owner of travel agency, revealed that to face the AEC, the people of Indonesia should have a breakthrough and innovation that could not be replicated by other countries. On that account, the domestic products, especially local products, would be favored by foreign consumers. To that end, the government should work harder to prepare the public to face the free market. “Hopefully, the AEC will have a positive impact on Indonesia, especially Bali. TABANAN - In welcoming the 3rd anniversary of Kuta Central Park to three, the management and staffs held outing activity to Bedugul Botanical Garden (May 3 and 4). The event which was followed by staffs of Kuta Central Park was colored by fun games such as playing ball, balloon and hula hoop. Besides outing activity, there was also a sport like badminton, chess and futsal.

GIANYAR - A total of 1,000 pine trees of Belitung and shrimp variety brought in from outside Bali, were planted along the coastal areas of Siyut, Tulikup village, Gianyar, Wednesday (May 7). The planting carried out by Gianyar government and Faculty of Forestry, Gadjah Mada University (UGM), was expected to prevent the current rampant abrasion at the location.

Human Resources Manager Leni Savitri delivered, the activity followed by 120 staffs in which they are divided into two, each of 60 staffs a day. “I hope, Kuta Central Park more and more solid. Absolutely, we would like to give our best services for our beloved guests forever,” she said. (ocha)

The hard work of Buleleng County to complete the road improvement project with the status of county road in 2014, in fact, has not yet been able to complete the entire road damagesd in Buleleng. Meanwhile, the road damage having been repaired in 2014 reaches along 130 kilometers with the total length of 878 kilometers of county roads. along 130 kilometers in 2014. The project undertaken this year is divided into dozens of work packages. Of those packages, most have only entered the phase of working contract arrangement with partners having been declared as the winning bidders. Five projects of the package had been running, while the rest was still in the preparation of tender administration through Government Auction Unit (ULP). Gadjah Mada University, Sri Danarto, said the pine tree planting program along the beach posed a program that had been developing by the UGM to overcome and prevent the abrasion. A similar program had also been implemented in the region of Kebumen and Jepara (Central Java) and Belitung (South Sumatra). A successful program had been carried out by the Madura County with the planting of pine trees along 26 km where the existence of pine trees even increased the width of the beach in the region. Other than being appropriate to coastal areas, the pine trees also produced natural nitrogen which can become nutrients for the plants because they were able to produce an excellent natural urea. Thus, in the future it could be used to grow other plants around the beach with intercropping systems such as pepper, dragon fruit, melon, pumpkin and rice that could be grown even on the beach. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Stunners and bummers from the Met Gala

Erykah Badu took Pharrell’s hat to new heights with a swath of added bling, Maggie Gyllenhaal wore dots — albeit Valentino dots — and Lupita Nyong’o went for it in “divisive Prada,” as one critic noted, dressed in parrot green flapper gear that included a jeweled cage overlay with large feathers on each side and a short brown sheath underneath. Kristen Stewart wasn’t far behind with an uh-oh moment of her own in busy, busy Chanel that was bejeweled, befeathered, nubby and metallic, cut in the middle by a wide waist band of some sort. Black and white ruled the evening Monday at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in honor of a new Costume Institute exhibit showing off the classic work of designer Charles James. Parker’s hair was high for her walk up the elegant staircase as she channeled James in black bodice, long white gloves and full gown by Oscar de la Renta. The designer even signed the look in red at the bottom of the back hem. Silverman wore a classic strapless silhouette in maroon by Zac Posen and Kurkova was in a soft blue, tiered gown with floral touches from Marchesa. The Jamesian black-and-white color combos — Badu’s badass trouser-and-trench outfit was from Givenchy — were joined by pops of yellow: Thank you, Olivia Munn, in low-cut Diane von Furstenberg, Jourdan Dunn in custom Topshop and a floral from Carolina Herrera on Emmy Rossum. Reese Witherspoon added some hot pink in a simple, strapless Stella McCartney. Some other moments, both grand as befitting the year’s big fashion night, and not so much: RIHANNA: Her below-thebreast tattoo peeked out from under a white midriff top with a high jeweled neck and pointy padded shoulders, worn with a matching long pleated skirt that had an unfortunate foldover at the rear. Ministry to seek shorcut to market decorative fishes

KUTA - The maritime and fisheries ministry said it would seek a short cut to the market for the country’s exports of decorative fishes.

“So far almost all exports of decorative fishes from Indonesia reach the countries of destination via Singapore,” Dwi Yulianto, an official of the Bali maritime and fishery office, said on Thursday. Intensive approaches have been made with a number of Chinese importers of decorative fishes, Yulianto said. He said China is the largest country of destination for Indonesian decorative fishes. “We have been active in taking part in decorative fish exhibitions in a number of countries to be able to negotiate directly with buyers,” he said, adding, “Soon we would take part in such exhibition in Germany.” Indonesia is the fifth largest supplier of decorative fishes in the world, he said on the sidelines of a visit to PT Dinar Darum Lestari, an exporter of decorative fishes in Kerobokan. Other largest suppliers are

Singapore, Spain, Japan, and Malaysia. “If we could by pass Singapore in exports would rise to a higher rank,” Yulianto. The United Nation Commodity Trade Statistics Database shows that Indonesia’s exports of decorative fishes in 2012, were valued at US$21.015 million or 8.12 percent of the world’s total export value. He said Indonesia has the potential to meet 80 percent of the world’s decorative fish requirement every year. SEMARAPURA - The issue of the construction of road access on the east cliff of Melangit River, Bakas village, Banjarangkan subdistrict, was eventually mediated by the leadership council of Banjarangkan subdistrict at the office of local subdistrict head, Tuesday (May 6). The meeting was attended by both parties. Unfortunatly, the meeting did not produce any agreement and ended with da deadlock. A followup meeting was scheduled for Friday (May 9). The Banjarangkan Police Chief, I Made Sudanta, stated last Tuesday that the meeting started around 09:30 a.m. The meeting attempted to mutually understand and resolve the issue amicably. “We held this meeting so that the local village could resolve the issue, and avoide protractedn negotiations,” said Sudanta. However since there was no agreement , the legal process, according to the report of the plaintiff Wayan Sumardika to the National Police Commission was still running and being investigated by Banjarangkan police officers. Subdistrict head of Banjarangkan, Komang Gede Wisnuadi, after the meeting said that the mediation was in accordance with the instructions of the regional leader. The council of Banjarangkan then attempted to mediate the matter, “Under the leadership instructions, we’re just wishing

to mediate, not looking for who is right or wrong. It will be much better if it can still be discussed,” he explained. Wisnuadi said both parties and community leaders in attendance wanted mutual understanding as well as workable consensus even though the report process was still running. It would be set forth in the points of consensus. The consensus itself needed to be set and agreed upon by the community. “The points of agreement will be set forth in the next meeting,” he said. Points of the agreement would be discussed in the hamlet, customary village and local administrative village in order for the problem to be resolved at the village level. In the discussion, the village was requested to communicate to residents associated with the protests and a common desire to find out the best solution for the local area. His party hoped the second meeting on Friday (May 9) could discuss the points of agreement determined and they would be further discussed by subdistrict leadership council. Meanwhile, I Wayan Sumardika said that dredging of a cliff with a bulldozer could not be done arbitrarily. Sumardika assessed that the facts in the field indicated that the environmental protection was very weak. Such phenomenon did not only occur in Klungkung, but almost in every other county/ municipality in Bali. Previously, his party reported the Bakas Levi Rafting to the National Police Commission. He mentioned that a lot of local people protested, but the protest always clogged. “The excuse for rearranging the environment cannot be used to arbitrarily bulldoze a cliff. It has been set forth in the regulation,” he said.

Meanwhile, manager of the Bakas Levi Rafting, Nyoman Levi Suweta, after the case emerged dismissed the allegation of having commited environmental destruction. Levi confirmed that his party only attempted to arrange the local environment in meeting safety requirements of rafting activities because he was required to provide road access within easy reach when any incident occurred during the rafting activities. For example, when a drowning or falling happened, the assistance could be provided quickly. Before building, his party claimed to have coordinated with customary village and local administrative village. Village authorities were said to have allowed. Levi claimed that illage authorities had given him the go ahead and also denied that local residents had protested. He emphasized that the road access was opened to the public, not just for his business activities. Bakas Levi Rafting has been known as one of the favorite rafting locations in Bali and has become a Bali tourist attraction in Klungkung. (kmb31)

SINGARAJA - To prevent the spread of rabies in the town of Singaraja, the Buleleng government through the Agriculture and Livestock Agency performed a mass dog vaccination program. The mass dog vaccination has been going on since April 15, 2014. A total of 18,000 dogs have been vaccinated over the past two weeks. The Head of Buleleng Agriculture and Livestock Agency, Nyoman Swatantra, said that his party had vaccinated 18,000 dogs of the total target of 70,000 dogs or rabies animal carrier (HPR). All the dogs should be vaccinated within three months. The vaccination program to 70,000 dogs would be undertaken in the field gradually and completed on time. “We record a total of 18,000 dogs having been vaccinated. Some other pets such as dogs and cats will also receive vaccination. Both animals contribute to the spread of rabies in Buleleng. We will vaccinate carefully and do it on time,” he said, Tuesday (May 6). The growing population of stray dogs happened because they had no owner. Such conditions caused the spread of rabies virus to get special attention from the government. According to Swatantra, the mass dog vaccination was much required by people and it was assured to prevent the rampant spread of rabies from dog bites to humans. In the period November 2013 to February 2014, quite a lot of dog bite cases claimed rabies victims. It was kindled by the dogs infected by rabies virus, where the age was four to six months. “We estimate the age of rabies transmission is from four to six months. Stray dogs classified into suffering from rabies were alleged to escape in the previous vaccination,” he said. He suggested people to be more alert and more introspective against the spread of rabies virus in dogs and cats. BANGKOK — Thailand’s anti-graft commission indicted ousted Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Thursday on charges of dereliction of duty in overseeing a widely criticized rice subsidy program, a day after a court forced her from office. Yingluck was accused of allowing the rice program, a flagship policy of her administration, to proceed despite advice that it was potentially wasteful and prone to corruption. The government has lost billions of dollars on the subsidy plan, which also cost Thailand its position as the world’s leading rice exporter as the government stockpiled the commodity. National AntiCorruption Commission chief Panthep Klanarongran said the agency voted unanimously that there were enough grounds to indict her. “The NACC had submitted letters to warn the defendant twice that the project would create problems and incur great losses, as well as allow corruption to take place throughout every step of the scheme,” Commissioner Vicha Mahakun told a news conference. “Yet the defendant did not consider suspending the project as soon as she learned about the country’s great losses from running the project.” Yingluck now faces an impeachment vote by the Senate. If impeached and found guilty, she would be barred from politics for five years. into possibly filing criminal charges against Yingluck. The ruling accomplished what anti-government demonstrators have sought to do for the past six months and further widened the country’s sharp political divide. The leader of the protesters, Suthep Thaugsuban, told his followers that they would stage a “final offensive” on Friday and would achieve their goal of fully ousting the government. Yingluck’s supporters, known as the Red Shirts, have called for a huge rally Saturday to show support for the government, which won a landslide victory in 2011 elections.

Merkel’s governing coalition and opposition lawmakers established a parliamentary committee in March to investigate the scope of the NSA spying. The committee decided Thursday to try to question Snowden directly, German news agency dpa reported. It’s not yet clear if they will invite Snowden to Germany or interview him via video conference. Opposition parties insist Snowden should be brought to Berlin as a key witness, while Merkel’s governing coalition has opposed that. Fear of economic blow as births drop

NEW YORK — The 2008 financial crisis did more than wipe out billions in wealth and millions of jobs. It also sent birth rates tumbling around the world as couples found themselves too short of money or too fearful about their finances to have children. Six years later, birth rates haven’t bounced back. For those who fear an overcrowded planet, this is good news. For the economy, not so good. We tend to think economic growth comes from working harder and smarter. But economists attribute up to a third of it to more people joining the workforce each year than leaving it. The result is more producing, earning and spending. Now this secret fuel of the economy, rarely missing and little noticed, is running out. “For the first time since World War II, we’re no longer getting a tailwind,” says Russ Koesterich, chief investment strategist at BlackRock, the world’s largest money manager. “You’re going to create fewer jobs. ... All else equal, wage growth will be slower.” Births are falling in China, Japan, the United States, Germany, Italy and nearly all other European countries. Studies have shown that births drop when unemployment rises, such as during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Birth rates have fallen the most in some regions that were hardest hit by the financial crisis. In the United States, three-quarters of people surveyed by Gallup last year said the main reason couples weren’t having more children was a lack of money or fear of the economy. The trend emerges as a gauge of future economic health — the growth in the pool of potential workers, ages 20-64 — is signaling trouble ahead. This labor pool had expanded for decades, thanks to the vast generation of baby boomers born in the first few decades after World War II in many countries. Now the boomers are retiring, and there are barely enough new workers to replace them, let alone add to their numbers. Growth in the working-age population has halted in developed countries overall. Even in France and the United Kingdom, with relatively healthy birth rates, growth in the labor pool has slowed dramatically. In Japan, Germany and Italy, the labor pool is shrinking. “It’s like health — you only realize it exists until you don’t have it,” says Alejandro Macarron Larumbe of Demographic Renaissance, a think tank in Madrid. The drop in birth rates is rooted in the 1960s, when many women entered the workforce for the first time and couples decided to have smaller families. Births did begin rising in many countries in the new millennium. But then the financial crisis struck. Stocks and home values plummeted, blowing a hole in household finances, and tens of millions of people lost jobs. Many couples delayed having children or decided to have none at all. Couples in the world’s five biggest developed economies — the United States, Japan, Germany, France and the United Kingdom — had 350,000 fewer babies in 2012 than in 2008, a drop of nearly 5 percent. The United Nations forecasts that women in those countries will have an average 1.7 children in their lifetimes. Demographers say the fertility rate needs to reach 2.1 just to replace people dying and keep populations constant.

MANILA, Philippines — Philippine authorities are investigating whether 11 detained Chinese fishermen entered the country’s waters illegally to catch endangered turtles, police said Thursday, despite a Chinese demand for their immediate release. Police detained the fishermen and their boat, which allegedly contained more than 350 green sea turtles, in a disputed area called Half Moon Shoal, sparking the latest spat between the Asian nations in the increasingly volatile South China Sea. China pressed the Philippine government to free the fishermen and the boat, warning Manila on Thursday not to take any more “provocative actions so as to avoid further damage to bilateral relations.” Asked if the Philippines would heed China’s demand, national police chief Alan Purisima said the fishermen will be investigated by an inter-agency committee to determine if they committed any crimes, including illegal entry and catching an endangered species. He said maritime police will increase security patrols at Half Moon Shoal, called Hasa Hasa in the Philippines. China claims the submerged coral outcrop, 110 kilometers (70 miles) from the western Philippine province of Palawan, belongs to it. “That is their assertion,” Purisima told a news conference. “Our assertion is, that it is ours, that it is Philippine territory.” Five Filipino fishermen were caught separately near the shoal with about 70 endangered turtles in their boat, and they will also be investigated, Purisima said. However, the debate fell apart as al-Jayousi accused alJohari of supporting the Syrian rebels. Al-Johari then accused al-Jayousi of taking money for supporting Assad. JAKARTA - Major political parties of Indonesia are still struggling to form a coalition for the upcoming presidential election, which is just two months away. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) has described the struggle so far as becoming more and more lively. “It is getting more and more lively, isn’t it? It is more lively but also orderly and peaceful. So, it is good, isn’t it?,” he exclaimed to the media at the Merdeka Palace on Monday. When asked about the direction of the coalition struggle, a newsperson said that the parties were still waiting for the ruling Democrat Party’s stance. In response, President SBY pointed out that the other parties were already strong, and so they will not require the support of his party. On the question of when his party will announce its presidential candidate, SBY replied that this will take place on May 11 once the winner of the convention is announced after the conclusion of surveys by three institutes. The Democrat Party has planned a convention to select a presidential candidate for the election on July 9. Although the party was later found to have only collected around 10 percent of the votes in the legislative elections held on April 9, it had decided to go ahead with the convention. None of the other parties meanwhile have been able to collect majority votes in the legislative elections, and so the parties will have to form a coalition to be able to meet the presidential threshold. Only the Indonesia Democratic Party Struggle (PDIP), which was the winner of the legislative elections according to quick counts so far has been relatively firm with its position as it has been able to meet the presidential threshold in cooperation with new National Democrat Party (Nasdem). Its major rival, the Golkar Party and the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra), meanwhile is still struggling to find the right coalition partner. A strategic position is still open for offer and to vie for, namely the vice-presidential position. It is interesting that although all the parties have named their presidential candidates, none have named their vice-presidential candidates. Jokowi, the presidential candidate of the PDIP, recently announced that the potential vice-presidential candidates have been shortlisted, but the PDIP is still weighing the most suitable candidate to become his running mate. Among the names that have come up so far are Mahfud, MD, the former constitutional court chief justice; Ryamizard Ryacudu, a former army general; and Jusuf Kalla, the former vice president. “It is very important for an immediate decision to be made over the issue,” he noted. In the latest move, Golkar Party general chairman Aburizal Bakrie (Ical), met with Gerindra’s chief patron, Prabowo Subianto, who is also the party’s presidential candidate, at the latter’s private residence in Hambalang, Bogor, on Monday. The second meeting between the two figures, however, did not yield an agreement for a coalition. “This meeting is a follow up of the first meeting held last week, when Prabowo visited Aburizal Bakrie,” Vice Chairman Gerindra Fadli Zon revealed after the closed meeting. An observer meanwhile remarked that a possible alliance between Prabowo Subianto and Aburizal Bakrie in the upcoming presidential election will have its advantages and disadvantages. “Politically, a Prabowo-Ical alliance will be advantageous to Prabowo because he will get a partner and the support of a large and strong political machine,” Victor Silaen of Pelita Harapan University noted on Tuesday.

A draw at home to West Ham on Sunday will be enough for City to settle a thrilling title race, with only Liverpool capable of stopping them. Chelsea, in third place, has been knocked out of contention. If City does go on to capture the championship, it will have done so in style under attack-minded coach Manuel Pellegrini — just as was desired by the club’s Abu Dhabi owners. “In the way we play, I am very happy to win the title this way,” said Pellegrini, speaking as if the Premier League trophy was already in City’s hands. “There are different ways to win titles — I choose this one with attractive football ... Maybe you can win titles other ways. For me, the aesthetic part is very important.” City has been most pundits’ favorite the whole season but the team is doing it the hard way — just like in 2012 when it won the title with two injury-time goals in its final match.
