Media mogul Oprah Winfrey sold a portion of her holdings in Weight Watchers International Inc, the former talk show host’s production company Harpo Inc said on Tuesday. A portion of the shares were donated to Winfrey’s foundation and she will retain over 75 percent of her holdings in the weight management company, Harpo said in a statement. Winfrey will not sell additional shares this year, it added. “I am deeply committed to Weight Watchers and continue to see a bright future for the company,” said Winfrey, who is continuing in her role as board member, adviser and spokesperson. In 2015, Winfrey joined Weight Watchers’ board and took a 10-percent stake in the company, with options to buy more. Weight Watchers’ stock have gained more than eight times in value since she bought into the company. Actress Cynthia Nixon may challenge Cuomo for New York governor: report NEW YORK - Cynthia Nixon, a liberal activist and a star of the hit television series “Sex and the City,” is considering a run for governor of New York, challenging incumbent Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary, NY1 television said on Tuesday, citing unidentified sources. The actress has begun assembling staff, including two veterans of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s election team, NY1 said. Cuomo and de Blasio, both Democrats, have been politically estranged for years. “Many concerned New Yorkers

have been encouraging Cynthia to run for office, and as she has said previously, she will continue to explore it,” Nixon’s publicist, Rebecca Capellan, said in a statement. “If and when such a decision is made, Cynthia will be sure to make her plans public.” The primary is Sept. 13 and the general election Nov. 6. Cuomo, 60, the son of late New York Governor Mario Cuomo, is seeking his third term this year. In his 2014 reelection, a primary challenger with little name recognition, Zephyr Teachout, won roughly 34 percent of the vote to Cuomo’s 62 percent, leading to speculation that Cuomo,

BTB optimistic to reach its 6.5 million target for foreign tourists

DENPASAR - The Bali Tourism Board (BTB) said it is optimistic it would reach the target to attract 6.5 million foreign tourist to visit Bali this year. With Mount Agung looking peaceful there would be no cause discouraging or canceling visits to Bali by tourists this year. Many foreign tourist cancelled visits to Bali last year because of repeated eruptions of the volcano disrupting flight schedules to and from Denpasar. However, despite continued reports of Mount Agung`s rumblings, Bali recorded a healthy growth of 15.62 percent to 5.69 million visits by foreign tourists or 769,802 visits higher than 4.92 million in the previous year. Stronger growth of 21.8 percent year-on-year was recorded in the number of foreign tourist arrivals in the whole country to 14.04 million that year. “The number of foreign tourist arrivals in Bali even exceeded the target of 5.5 million ,” head of the provincial Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) Adi Nugroho said earlier. The rise has bolstered the confidence of the government, and tourism industrialists over the future of tourism in the country, which lies in the ring of fire. “The Bali`s target is around 40 percent of the country`s target for foreign tourist arrivals of 17 million set for this year,” chairman of BTB Ida Bagus Agung Partha Adnyana said here on Monday. BTB will organize visit abroad to promote Bali tourism in cooperation with the tourism industrialists. The business players in the tourism sector from the regency of Badung plan to visit Berlin to take part in tourism promotion at an international tourism exhibition in that German city from March 7-11 this year. More potentials market for Indonesian tourism include China, Australia and India. DENPASAR - State-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura I has started work to expand the International Airport of I Gusti Ngurah Rai, Bali, to be completed ahead of the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank to take place in Bali in October this year. Thousands of delegates from all over the world are to take part in the big meeting. According to General Manager of the branch of PT Angkasa Pura I at the Ngurah Rai airport Yanus Suprayogi, around 17,000 delegates including 34 heads of state from 189 countries will attend the meeting. Yanus said on the sidelines of the 54th anniversary commemo-

ration of the company here on Saturday, the expansion project, which is estimated to cost around Rp2.2 trillion is expected to be fully completed before October, 2018. He said the fund is used for the expansion of a number of facilities such as the aprons in the western and eastern sides of the airport. The VIP I and VIP II terminals in the western side of the airport would be moved to the eastern side near the international cargo terminal. The headquarter of Base Operation of the Ngurah Rai military air base will also be relocated to be close to the new VIP terminals for security reason. Currently work is in the phase of building new apron in the eastern side of the airport now 1.76 percent completed. The eastern apron will

be expanded to accommodate four more wide bodied aircraft and in the western side of the airport, the parking area would expanded to be able to accommodate six more units of wide bodied aircraft. Yanus said additional parking lots are urgent as the airport could not yet meet the demand from around 70 domestic and international airlines serving flights to Bali. The capacity of the domestic and international terminals and the runway in one of busiest airport in the country is adequate at present. With limited land space, expansion of the airport would be through reclamation of the beach land in the western side of the airport covering around 48 hectares. (ant)

There is no Nyepi Package, except for added value

MANGUPURA — The Bali Hotel Association (BHA) confirmed that there is no Nyepi Package. However, there is an added value. Chairman of the BHA, Ricky Putra, said there is indeed no Nyepi Package. The packages made by BHA look like Nyepi Package because it coincides with Nyepi Day. It is made on the grounds that guests may not check in or check out March 17 coinciding with the Nyepi. So, they should stay at hotel for two or three days. “We are trying to educate our guests because there is no flight on March 17. There are guests asking for checking in on March 16 and checking out on March 17. Obviously it cannot be done. Besides, there are also guests requesting to check in on March 17 and check out on March 18, surely this cannot be done. On that account, it is then made the package of 2 or 3 nights. Currently, we even have a lot of packages,” he explained not long ago. Before and after Nyepi, there is no change of room rates, but there is an added value. Room rates remain as on usual days. But on Nyepi guests get additional benefits. “For example, guests are usually given breakfast only, but on Nyepi they are given additional lunch and dinner as it is not possible for them to leave hotel for lunch or dinner. Probably, it is misinterpreted as Nyepi Package, actually it is an added value,” he said. There are two types of guest namely business and leisure guests. Business guests with Nyepi will lose two days. However, for lei-

sure guests, Nyepi is a moment to provide an education and an opportunity to see Balinese culture. On Nyepi, BHA members must comply with the rules and regulations where the hotel is located. They must reduce noises and activities outside the hotel. “Guests are not allowed to go to the beach,” he said. On that account, there is no special attraction to be performed on Nyepi. The moment of Nyepi affects the hotel occupancy rate. He admitted that hotel occupancy rate before and during Nyepi is the same, there is no an increase. The occupancy averagely reaches 45-60 percent. “We do not hope there is an increase with the Nyepi package et cetera,” he said. According to him, the domestic market is even more attractive on Nyepi. Many guests are interested to see the traditions and customs in Bali like the tradition of parading ogoh-ogoh (papiér mâché demon). If guests want to get such an experience, they should stay for 2-3 nights since it is not possible for guests to check in on March 16 and check out on March 17. Aside from domestic guests, the composition of tourists staying in Bali on Nyepi Day is dominated by Asian, European, and Australian tourists. Asian tourists reach 30-40 percent, domestic (5-8 percent), Australian (3-4 percent) and European (5 percent). DENPASAR — World Bank’s study related to the airport development plan in Buleleng is questioned by Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika. He claimed to have never been involved in the talk about the research conducted by the World Bank. BEIJING - China will respond as necessary in the event of a trade war with the United States, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Thursday, while warning that such a war would only harm all sides. U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to establish tariffs of 25 percent on imported steel and 10 percent on imported aluminium this week, but the White House has said there could be a 30-day exemption for Mexico and Canada and some other countries based on national security. TOKYO - Japan is seeking proposals for a new advanced jet fighter based on an existing Western aircraft and wants American and British cooperation to help kick-start development of the project, which is estimated to cost around $40 billion, three sources said. Japan this month issued a third request for information (RFI) to defence companies, seeking proposals for the new aircraft, dubbed the F-3. Unlike the first two requests, this one went only to foreign companies in the United States and Europe, with a separate, more detailed document delivered to London and Washington, according to the sources, who have direct knowledge of the requests. “Japan expects specific proposals for designs based on existing aircraft,” said one of the sources. The two previous RFIs did not attract any detailed proposals, he added. The requests for a design based on existing aircraft and the separate documents sent to the British and U.S. governments have not been previously reported. The sources declined to be identified because they are not authorised to speak to the media. Existing airframes Japan could use include the F-35 Lightning II stealth jet built by Lockheed Martin Corp or Boeing Co’s F/A-18E/F Super Hornet; and the Eurofighter Typhoon, manufactured by a European consortium including BAE Systems Plc. Japan’s last domestically produced jet fighter, the F-2, which entered service in 2000, was built jointly by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Lockheed Martin based on the U.S. F-16 multi-role fighter. Yeh Mekoos, Spiritual Attraction at Soka Village

Once upon a time, try visiting Yeh Mekoos (springs with a loud voice) located at Soka customary village, Penebel, Tabanan. It is very close to Jatiluwih tourist attraction or about 50 km and about 1.5 hours’ drive from Denpasar. This tourist attraction exudes a positive aura, so it is often chosen as a spiritual destination. The object is located on the southern side, the edge of paddy field of the village. The landscape is very beautiful, consisting of stretches of rice terraces like Jatiluwih. The air is cool because it is rich with plants, so that exuding a lot of oxygen. This spiritual venue is right under the Soka’s parking lot approximately 50 meters from the village road. Unfortunately, the road to the object has not got any attention, so the terrain is quite difficult and steep.

It is called Yeh Mekoos because it has a very loud voice over the sound of another river. Sometimes, the sounds are heard from long distance due to being swift and fast. So, the surrounding people call it Yeh Mekoos. Its large and clear water is not only used to irrigate paddy fields, but is also used to meet the clean water need of the community through the Municipality Waterworks (PDAM) in Tabanan. Yeh Mekoos is taken advantage as a place to melukat (physical and spiritual purificatory rite) by the Hindu community. Apart from the people of Tabanan, they are also often used by people from Badung, Denpasar and Buleleng. Yeh Mekoos is believed to have the quality of curing all kinds of diseases, mainly broken bones. Therefore, when bathing, people will always

put offerings. “Yeh Mekoos is also a beji (place to purify sanctified effigies) for the people of Soka village,” said Ni Nyoman Surini, the owner and operator. California governor says Trump administration waging war against state

SACRAMENTO - California Governor Jerry Brown on Wednesday accused President Donald Trump’s administration of declaring war on the most populous U.S. state, after the Justice Department sued to stop policies that protect illegal immigrants against deportation.

The Democratic governor made the charge shortly after Attorney General Jeff Sessions intensified the Republican administration’s confrontation with California. In a speech in the state capital, Sessions accused California of obstructing federal immigration enforcement efforts and vowed to stop the state’s defiance. Sessions addressed a law enforcement group in Sacramento, a day after the Justice Department filed suit against California, Brown and the state’s Democratic attorney general over so-called sanctuary policies that shield illegal immigrants. “California absolutely, it appears to me, is using every power it has - powers it doesn’t have - to frustrate federal law enforcement. So you can be sure I’m going to use every power I have to stop them,” Sessions, the top U.S law enforcement officer, said in his speech. Britain says former Russian spy poisoned with nerve agent SALISBURY - A nerve agent was used to deliberately poison a former Russian double agent and his daughter, Britain’s top counter-terrorism officer said on Wednesday, in a case that threatens to further damage London’s ties with Moscow. Sergei Skripal, once a colonel in Russia’s GRU military intelligence service, and his 33-year-old daughter, Yulia, were found slumped unconscious on a bench outside a shopping centre in the southern English city of Salisbury on Sunday afternoon. Both remain critically ill and a police officer who attended the scene is also in a serious condition in hospital. “This is being treated as a major incident involving attempted murder by administration of a nerve agent,” London Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley told reporters. “I can also confirm that we believe the two people originally who became unwell were targeted specifically.” Rowley said government scientists had identified the specific nerve agent but he would not say what it was because it was part of the investigation. He also declined to give any details about how it was administered to Skripal, 66, and his daughter. England’s chief medical officer said the incident posed a low risk to the wider public but anyone feeling unwell was advised to seek medical advice. While Rowley would not say any more about the investigation, a U.S. security source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the main line of police inquiry was that Russians may have used the substance against Skripal in revenge for his treachery. Skripal betrayed dozens of Russian agents to British intelligence before his arrest by Russian authorities in 2004. He was sentenced to 13 years in prison in 2006 after a secret trial and in 2010 was given refuge in Britain after being exchanged for Russian spies caught in the West as part of a Cold War-style spy swap at Vienna airport. On Tuesday, British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said if Moscow were behind the incident then Britain could look again at sanctions and take other measures to punish Russia, which he cast as a “malign and disruptive” state. Sinking shoreline threatens coastal communities in Indonesia

Almost every day, the sea, which used to lap the shore a few kilometres away, floods her schoolyard and classrooms – clear evidence of the threat that Java’s sinking coastline poses to millions of people. Experts say Pantai Bahagia, or “Happy Beach”, and scores of other villages and towns along the shoreline are being inundated because of a grim combination of man-made environmental destruction and climate change. “On the one hand, we face climate change that causes sea levels to rise,” said I Nyoman Suryadiputra, director of the Wetlands International Indonesia conservation group. At the same time, he said, the extraction of groundwater for use in big cities like the capital, Jakarta, is causing the subsidence of land along the coast. Roughly 40 percent of Jakarta is below sea level and a new sea wall has had to be built in a bid to hold back the waves. Still, large areas in the north of the city are regularly inundated, forcing businesses to pile up sandbags for protection while food stalls feed the hungry with water sloshing around their feet. Hundreds of kilometres to the east, in the seaside town of Demak, residents prop up their fridges and televisions on concrete blocks to keep them out of the murky water that flows into their homes during high tides. JAKARTA - Indonesia`s Communication and Informatics Ministry has found more than 360 accounts in microblogging platform Tumblr that contained pornography. “We found more than 360 accounts following reports from the public on pornography contents

in Tumblr,” the ministry`s Director General for Informatics Application Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan said here on Wednesday. Based on the finding, the ministry has sent an e-mail on February 28 to notify Tumblr about it. A team has given the social networking

website a two-day deadline to clean its platform from pornographic contents. However, the microblogging platform has failed to respond to the demand, and so the ministry has blocked eight Tumblr Domain Name Systems (DNS) on March

LONDON - Former Ferrari chief designer Nikolas Tombazis has joined Formula One’s governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), to work with teams on future technical regulations. An FIA spokesman said Tombazis, whose Formula One career includes stints with former champions Benetton and McLaren, had been appointed head of technical matters for single-seater racing.

“He will also contribute to the strategic vision of the F1/F2/F3/F4 technical and sporting regulations and be the contact point for Formula One teams...regarding current and future technical regulations.” He takes the place vacated by Marcin Budkowski, a Polish-born aerodynamicist who also previously worked for Ferrari and McLaren, who resigned in September and subsequently joined Renault.

Tombazis started out with Benetton in 1992, where he became chief aerodynamicist at a time when Michael Schumacher was driving for the team. After moving to Ferrari in 1997, he became McLaren’s Project Chief Director in 2005 and then returned to Maranello as chief designer in 2006. Most recently he worked with the now-defunct Manor team. LONDON - Former Ferrari chief designer Nikolas Tombazis has joined Formula One’s governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), to work with teams on future technical regulations. An FIA spokesman said Tombazis, whose Formula One career includes stints with former champions Benetton and McLaren, had been appointed head of technical matters for single-seater racing.

“He will also contribute to the strategic vision of the F1/F2/F3/F4 technical and sporting regulations and be the contact point for Formula One teams...regarding current and future technical regulations.” He takes the place vacated by Marcin Budkowski, a Polish-born aerodynamicist who also previously worked for Ferrari and McLaren, who resigned in September and subsequently joined Renault.

Tombazis started out with Benetton in 1992, where he became chief aerodynamicist at a time when Michael Schumacher was driving for the team. After moving to Ferrari in 1997, he became McLaren’s Project Chief Director in 2005 and then returned to Maranello as chief designer in 2006. Most recently he worked with the now-defunct Manor team. California governor says Trump administration waging war against state

SACRAMENTO - California Governor Jerry Brown on Wednesday accused President Donald Trump’s administration of declaring war on the most populous U.S. state, after the Justice Department sued to stop policies that protect illegal immigrants against deportation.

The Democratic governor made the charge shortly after Attorney General Jeff Sessions intensified the Republican administration’s confrontation with California. In a speech in the state capital, Sessions accused California of obstructing federal immigration enforcement efforts and vowed to stop the state’s defiance. Sessions addressed a law enforcement group in Sacramento, a day after the Justice Department filed suit against California, Brown and the state’s Democratic attorney general over so-called sanctuary policies that shield illegal immigrants. “California absolutely, it appears to me, is using every power it has - powers it doesn’t have - to frustrate federal law enforcement. So you can be sure I’m going to use every power I have to stop them,” Sessions, the top U.S law enforcement officer, said in his speech. Brown called the attorney general’s trip to California a political stunt and his description of California’s laws a lie. “Like so many in the Trump administration, this attorney general has no regard for the truth,” Brown told

The lawsuit, filed late on Tuesday in federal court in Sacramento, takes aim at three state laws passed last year that the Justice Department contends violates the U.S. Constitution and the supremacy of federal law over state law. Trump has made fighting illegal immigration a signature issue, first as a candidate and now as president. Part of that effort involves a Justice Department crackdown on primarily Democratic-governed cities and states that Sessions calls “sanctuaries” that protect illegal immigrants from deportation. Britain says former Russian spy poisoned with nerve agent SALISBURY - A nerve agent was used to deliberately poison a former Russian double agent and his daughter, Britain’s top counter-terrorism officer said on Wednesday, in a case that threatens to further damage London’s ties with Moscow. Sergei Skripal, once a colonel in Russia’s GRU military intelligence service, and his 33-year-old daughter, Yulia, were found slumped unconscious on a bench outside a shopping centre in the southern English city of Salisbury on Sunday afternoon. Both remain critically ill and a police officer who attended the scene is also in a serious condition in hospital. “This is being treated as a major incident involving attempted murder by administration of a nerve agent,” London Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley told reporters. “I can also confirm that we believe the two people originally who became unwell were targeted specifically.” Rowley said government scientists had identified the specific nerve agent but he would not say what it was because it was part of the investigation. He also declined to give any details about how it was administered to Skripal, 66, and his daughter. England’s chief medical officer said the incident posed a low risk to the wider public but anyone feeling unwell was advised to seek medical advice. While Rowley would not say any more about the investigation, a U.S. security source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the main line of police inquiry was that Russians may have used the substance against Skripal in revenge for his treachery. Skripal betrayed dozens of Russian agents to British intelligence before his arrest by Russian authorities in 2004. He was sentenced to 13 years in prison in 2006 after a secret trial and in 2010 was given refuge in Britain after being exchanged for Russian spies caught in the West as part of a Cold War-style spy swap at Vienna airport. On Tuesday, British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said if Moscow were behind the incident then Britain could look again at sanctions and take other measures to punish Russia, which he cast as a “malign and disruptive” state. Russia denied any involvement, scolded Johnson for “wild” comments and said anti-Russian hysteria was being whipped up intentionally to damage relations with London. “It’s very hard not to assess this (speculation) as provocative black PR designed to complicate relations between our two countries,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters in Moscow on Wednesday.

Sinking shoreline threatens coastal communities in Indonesia

Almost every day, the sea, which used to lap the shore a few kilometres away, floods her schoolyard and classrooms – clear evidence of the threat that Java’s sinking coastline poses to millions of people. Experts say Pantai Bahagia, or “Happy Beach”, and scores of other villages and towns along the shoreline are being inundated because of a grim combination of man-made environmental destruction and climate change. “On the one hand, we face climate change that causes sea levels to rise,” said I Nyoman Suryadiputra, director of the Wetlands International Indonesia conservation group. At the same time, he said, the extraction of groundwater for use in big cities like the capital, Jakarta, is causing the subsidence of land along the coast. Roughly 40 percent of Jakarta is below sea level and a new sea wall has had to be built in a bid to hold back the waves. Still, large areas in the north of the city are regularly inundated, forcing businesses to pile up sandbags for protection while food stalls feed the hungry with water sloshing around their feet. Hundreds of kilometres to the east, in the seaside town of Demak, residents prop up their fridges and televisions on concrete blocks to keep them out of the murky water that flows into their homes during high tides. Some have simply abandoned their homes as the sea creeps closer. BENEFITS OF MANGROVES

Indonesia, an archipelago of thousands of islands, has about 81,000 km (50,000 miles) of coastline, making it particularly vulnerable to climate change. It is also home to more than a fifth of the world’s mangrove forests, which naturally help keep the tides out. But only 3 million hectares of mangroves remain, down from nearly double that three decades ago, according to Wetlands International. For years, coastal communities have chopped down the mangrove forests to clear the way for fish and shrimp farms, and for rice fields. In some places, hundreds of metres of coast that used to be lined with mangroves have now been swallowed up by the sea. The government has scrambled to work with environmental groups to replant mangroves, build dykes and relocate some people. But many residents, mostly poor fishermen and vendors, are either reluctant to leave their old family homes or simply have nowhere to go further inland on crowded Java. “I hope to be able to move, but my family has lived here for decades. Where can I go?” said Udin, a 30-year old fisherman in Pantai Bahagia, 90 km (56 miles) east of Jakarta. Udin said he has had to raise his wooden house higher on its stilts twice in recent years. Nearby, the tides are slowly claiming the village mosque and cemetery. “Only some of us are aware of the benefits of mangroves. There needs to be more collective responsibility,” Udin said. Despite the nearly daily flood at her school, 10-year old Rahmadani and her classmates are undeterred. “I stay in school and keep up my spirits up because I want to pursue my ambition of being a lecturer,” she said. Yeh Mekoos, Spiritual Attraction at Soka Village

Once upon a time, try visiting Yeh Mekoos (springs with a loud voice) located at Soka customary village, Penebel, Tabanan. It is very close to Jatiluwih tourist attraction or about 50 km and about 1.5 hours’ drive from Denpasar. This tourist attraction exudes a positive aura, so it is often chosen as a spiritual destination. The object is located on the southern side, the edge of paddy field of the village. The landscape is very beautiful, consisting of stretches of rice terraces like Jatiluwih. The air is cool because it is rich with plants, so that exuding a lot of oxygen. This spiritual venue is right under the Soka’s parking lot approximately 50 meters from the village road. Unfortunately, the road to the object has not got any attention, so the terrain is quite difficult and steep.

It is called Yeh Mekoos because it has a very loud voice over the sound of another river. Sometimes, the sounds are heard from long distance due to being swift and fast. So, the surrounding people call it Yeh Mekoos. Its large and clear water is not only used to irrigate paddy fields, but is also used to meet the clean water need of the community through the Municipality Waterworks (PDAM) in Tabanan. Yeh Mekoos is taken advantage as a place to melukat (physical and spiritual purificatory rite) by the Hindu community. Apart from the people of Tabanan, they are also often used by people from Badung, Denpasar and Buleleng. Yeh Mekoos is believed to have the quality of curing all kinds of diseases, mainly broken bones. Therefore, when bathing, people will always

put offerings. “Yeh Mekoos is also a beji (place to purify sanctified effigies) for the people of Soka village,” said Ni Nyoman Surini, the owner and operator. Surini admitted that Yeh Mekoos has not become a tourist attraction visited by many guests. So far, visitors are only people wishing to invoke healing that often take a bath or pray at this spring. In other words, the Buleleng airport plan cannot be declared to have been entirely canceled. “Survey by the World Bank is made in cooperation with Udayana University. So far, it has not yet been presented. Next week, I will be invited with the House of Representatives to Jakarta to listen to their presentations and our arguments. So,

According to Pastika, the results of the interim study do not only declare if the Buleleng airport is not feasible but the provincial plan to make railroads around Bali is not feasible because it will disturb the beauty of Bali. Both companies have submitted to the central government to obtain the location determination permit (Penlok). But until now, there is no certainty about it because no beauty contest is held. Actually, the location determination license is required to prepare the environmental impact analysis (AMDAL) and con-

duct a feasibility study before finally the selected company gets license of implementation. When confirmed separately, Chairman of Commission III of the Bali House of Representatives, I Nengah Tamba, said the airport development was to create an equal economy and balance between South Bali and North Bali. It can be realized with the development of infrastructure, where one of which is the airport in Buleleng. TOKYO - Japan is seeking proposals for a new advanced jet fighter based on an existing Western aircraft and wants American and British cooperation to help kick-start development of the project, which is estimated to cost around $40 billion, three sources said. Japan this month issued a third request for information (RFI) to defence companies, seeking proposals for the new aircraft, dubbed the F-3. Unlike the first two requests, this one went only to foreign companies in the United States and Europe, with a separate, more detailed document delivered to London and Washington, according to the sources, who have direct knowledge of the requests. “Japan expects specific proposals for designs based on existing aircraft,” said one of the sources. The two previous RFIs did not attract any detailed proposals, he added. The requests for a design based on existing aircraft and the separate documents sent to the British and U.S. governments have not been previously reported. The sources declined to be identified because they are not authorised to speak to the media. Existing airframes Japan could use include the F-35 Lightning II stealth jet built by Lockheed Martin Corp or Boeing Co’s F/A-18E/F Super Hornet; and the Eurofighter Typhoon, manufactured by a European consortium including BAE Systems Plc. Japan’s last domestically produced jet fighter, the F-2, which entered service in 2000, was built jointly by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Lockheed Martin based on the U.S. F-16 multi-role fighter. As Japan’s leading fighter maker, MHI, which built the World War Two-era A6M Zero, would anchor the Japanese share of the F-3 project. “We are considering domestic development, joint development and the possibility of improving existing aircraft performance, but we have not yet come to any decision,” a Ministry of Defense representative said.

Building Japan’s next-generation fighter based on a foreign aircraft already in service could save money, but come at the expense of advanced features like stealthy shaping. Neither the Typhoon nor Super Hornet are designed to be near-invisible to radar. MANGUPURA — The Bali Hotel Association (BHA) confirmed that there is no Nyepi Package. However, there is an added value. Chairman of the BHA, Ricky Putra, said there is indeed no Nyepi Package. The packages made by BHA look like Nyepi Package because it coincides with Nyepi Day. It is made on the grounds that guests may not check in or check out March 17 coinciding with the Nyepi. So, they should stay at hotel for two or three days. “We are trying to educate our guests because there is no flight on March 17. There are guests asking for checking in on March 16 and checking out on March 17. Obviously it cannot be done. Besides, there are also guests requesting to check in on March 17 and check out on March 18, surely this cannot be done. On that account, it is then made the package of 2 or 3 nights. Currently, we even have a lot of packages,” he explained not long ago. Before and after Nyepi, there is no change of room rates, but there is an added value. Room rates remain as on usual days. But on Nyepi guests get additional benefits. “For example, guests are usually given breakfast only, but on Nyepi they are given additional lunch and dinner as it is not possible for them to leave hotel for lunch or dinner. BTB optimistic to reach its 6.5 million target for foreign tourists

DENPASAR - The Bali Tourism Board (BTB) said it is optimistic it would reach the target to attract 6.5 million foreign tourist to visit Bali this year. With Mount Agung looking peaceful there would be no cause discouraging or canceling visits to Bali by tourists this year. Many foreign tourist cancelled visits to Bali last year because of repeated eruptions of the volcano disrupting flight schedules to and from Denpasar. However, despite continued reports of Mount Agung`s rumblings, Bali recorded a healthy growth of 15.62 percent to 5.69 million visits by foreign tourists or 769,802 visits higher than 4.92 million in the previous year. Stronger growth of 21.8 percent year-on-year was recorded in the number of foreign tourist arrivals in the whole country to 14.04 million that year. “The number of foreign tourist arrivals in Bali even exceeded the target of 5.5 million ,” head of the provincial Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) Adi Nugroho said earlier. The rise has bolstered the confidence of the government, and tourism industrialists over the future of tourism in the country, which lies in the ring of fire. “The Bali`s target is around 40 percent of the country`s target for foreign tourist arrivals of 17 million set for this year,” chairman of BTB Ida Bagus Agung Partha Adnyana said here on Monday. BTB will organize visit abroad to promote Bali tourism in cooperation with the tourism industrialists. DENPASAR - State-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura I has started work to expand the International Airport of I Gusti Ngurah Rai, Bali, to be completed ahead of the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank to take place in Bali in October this year. Thousands of delegates from all over the world are to take part in the big meeting. According to General Manager of the branch of PT Angkasa Pura I at the Ngurah Rai airport Yanus Suprayogi, around 17,000 delegates including 34 heads of state from 189 countries will attend the meeting. Yanus said on the sidelines of the 54th anniversary commemo-

ration of the company here on Saturday, the expansion project, which is estimated to cost around Rp2.2 trillion is expected to be fully completed before October, 2018. He said the fund is used for the expansion of a number of facilities such as the aprons in the western and eastern sides of the airport. The VIP I and VIP II terminals in the western side of the airport would be moved to the eastern side near the international cargo terminal. The headquarter of Base Operation of the Ngurah Rai military air base will also be relocated to be close to the new VIP terminals for security reason. Currently work is in the phase of building new apron in the eastern side of the airport now 1.76 percent completed. The eastern apron will

be expanded to accommodate four more wide bodied aircraft and in the western side of the airport, the parking area would expanded to be able to accommodate six more units of wide bodied aircraft. Yanus said additional parking lots are urgent as the airport could not yet meet the demand from around 70 domestic and international airlines serving flights to Bali. The capacity of the domestic and international terminals and the runway in one of busiest airport in the country is adequate at present. With limited land space, expansion of the airport would be through reclamation of the beach land in the western side of the airport covering around 48 hectares. (ant)

Media mogul Oprah Winfrey sold a portion of her holdings in Weight Watchers International Inc, the former talk show host’s production company Harpo Inc said on Tuesday. A portion of the shares were donated to Winfrey’s foundation and she will retain over 75 percent of her holdings in the weight management company, Harpo said in a statement. Winfrey will not sell additional shares this year, it added. “I am deeply committed to Weight Watchers and continue to see a bright future for the company,” said Winfrey, who is continuing in her role as board member, adviser and spokesperson. In 2015, Winfrey joined Weight Watchers’ board and took a 10-percent stake in the company, with options to buy more. Weight Watchers’ stock have gained more than eight times in value since she bought into the company. Actress Cynthia Nixon may challenge Cuomo for New York governor: report NEW YORK - Cynthia Nixon, a liberal activist and a star of the hit television series “Sex and the City,” is considering a run for governor of New York, challenging incumbent Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary, NY1 television said on Tuesday, citing unidentified sources. The actress has begun assembling staff, including two veterans of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s election team, NY1 said. Cuomo and de Blasio, both Democrats, have been politically estranged for years. “Many concerned New Yorkers

have been encouraging Cynthia to run for office, and as she has said previously, she will continue to explore it,” Nixon’s publicist, Rebecca Capellan, said in a statement. “If and when such a decision is made, Cynthia will be sure to make her plans public.” The primary is Sept. 13 and the general election Nov. 6. Cuomo, 60, the son of late New York Governor Mario Cuomo, is seeking his third term this year. In his 2014 reelection, a primary challenger with little name recognition, Zephyr Teachout, won roughly 34 percent of the vote to Cuomo’s 62 percent, leading to speculation that Cuomo,

a moderate, might be vulnerable to a challenge from a well-funded progressive. Nixon, 51, starred in the HBO television series from 1998 to 2004 about four women in New York City, playing the part of attorney Miranda Hobbes. The show later led to two feature films. Men often evict women from shared property, taking advantage of their ignorance and the inaccessibility of the courts, experts say. “Despite the fact that the constitution stipulates that women can own land, our people have not yet accepted that,” said 27-yearold Nancy Chemutai, one of six women elected to Nandi’s county assembly. “They feel that women are still weak and cannot get title deeds to own land ...
