Alec Baldwin says Trump impersonation revived his comedy career LOS ANGELES - Actor Alec Baldwin said that his impersonation of U.S. President Donald Trump on NBC’s sketch show “Saturday Night Live” has revived his “dead” comedy career after he wrapped up sitcom “30 Rock” in 2012. “I didn’t realize in the comedy terms that I was dead,” Baldwin told Reuters on Monday when asked if he felt he was entering a new era with his comedy. “Maybe I was in a coma ... now I’m waking up from a coma and now I’m ready to do some comedy.” The actor was promoting his latest film, DreamWorks’ animated comedy “The Boss Baby,” out in theaters on March 31, in which he voices a suit-wearing baby manager of a corporation for babies who is adopted by a family to undertake a covert mission. It has been nearly five years since Baldwin, 58, concluded his six-year tenure as the charming corporate boss Jack Donaghy in NBC’s quirky comedy series “30 Rock.” Since then, he has appeared in a handful of movies in supporting roles, but the actor saw a new surge in popularity when he took over as Trump on “Saturday Night Live” (SNL) last October, ahead of November’s U.S. presidential elections. Baldwin quipped that his comedy career “did die” but that “I’m being reincarnated. As Trump! Oh God!” Viewer ratings have soared for “Saturday Night Live” since Baldwin started portraying Trump in a series of skits mocking the billionaire reality TV star-turned-politician as a dim-witted commander-in-chief with a short attention span, an oversized-ego and a Twitter addiction. Trump criticized the NBC show in December, calling it “totally unwatchable” and a “hit-job.” Asked whether he felt playing the president took a toll on him, Baldwin said the challenge of the role was that it would “delight some people and offend other people.” “A large plurality of the country voted for Trump as president, and I think many of them are people that are not fond of the way Trump is treated, not just by ‘Saturday Night Live’ but the comedy cosmos in general,” he said. “I think for me playing Trump has been, it’s been a fun experience because it’s like going home when I do SNL.” (rtr)

MOGADISHU - Rich countries must do more to stop drought-stricken Somalia from sinking into famine, the head of the United Nations said on Tuesday, warning terrorism would increase without aid.
“If you want to fight terrorism, we need to address the root causes of terrorism. We need to bring peace and stability to a country like Somalia ... It’s the best way for rich countries to protect themselves,” U.N. chief Antonio Guterres told a news conference in Mogadishu. The United Nations is asking for
$825 million to provide aid to 6.2 million Somalis, about half the country’s population. “I am not appealing for the generosity of the rich, I am appealing for the enlightened selfinterest of the rich,” said Guterres. His appeal comes a day after U.S. President Donald Trump signed a revised executive order suspending travel to the United States from six mainly Muslim nations, including Somalia. Trump, who has justified that measure on national security grounds, has also said he will slash budgets for U.S. aid and diplomacy. Those policies will hit Somalia hard, after more than 25 years of civil
war and an ongoing battle between its U.N.-backed government and an Islamist insurgency. The current drought is threatening to turn into famine, with at least 360,000 Somali children severely malnourished, meaning they need extra food to survive. Continued to page 6

The donations were handed over by Chief Editor of Bali Post, Nyoman Wirata. Present at the occasion were Regent of Bangli, I Made Gianyar, Subdistrict Head of Kintamani, Wayan Dirgayusa, and Kintamani Military Commander, Wayan Legawa. At Songan village, the donationsm fro Bali Post readers were distributed to 26 families that had suffered form the recent landslide. Five families has sufferd severe damage to their houses and several members of their families were injured and a few were killed. Each family was given IDR 10 million. The other 21 families were relocated, because even though their homes were not entirely destroyed, they are located in the red zone. Theese families were each given IDR 5 million as well as food provisions. Apart form Bali Post reader donations for those who directly suffered from the landslide ,donatinos were also distributed in order to help repair the compund wall of Hulundanu Batur Temple in Songan Village that was severly damaged by the recent natural disaster. The donation allocated for the repair of the temple coumpund wall is valued at IDR 10 million. Another IDR 250 million worth of donations form
Bali Post readers was delivered to South Batur Village for 50 families affected by the mudslide in Toya mampeh and Culali. The donations were received directly by local reidents, witnessed by headman of South Batur, Gede Sarjana. Apart from monetary assistance, Bali Post also handed out food provisions to local residents. During the same occasion, Bali Post also distributed reader donations to Ulun Dana Batur Temple On the occasion, Bali Post also distributed IDR 1 million worth of to Ulun Danu Batur Temple. Nyoman Wirata said that the distribution of donations from Bali Post readers to the victims of disaster in Kintamani was occuring for the second time. A few weeks ago, readers’ donations in the form of groceries were handed over to the evacuation post at Yeh Mampeh, Batur village. Hopefully, the donations from readers of Bali Post will be useful in easing the burden of local residents affected by the disaster, said Wirata. Regent of Bangli, I Made Gianyar, on behalf of the people and the government of Bangli expressed his gratitude for the concern that Bali Post readers have shown through their generous donations that Bali Post distributed to resiendts of Kintamani that suffered form the landslides. that have given the donations via Bali Post to Kintamani residents affected by the disaster. “In this life, we help one another. Unresolved merchant relocation in Besakih
AMLAPURA - The area of Besakih Temple in Karangasem is now beeing managed by a management board. Spearheading this management, is Operations Management (OM) that has made some improvements including dealing with the issue of the merchant relocation. The merchants need to arrange themselves in a more orderly fashion so as not to disturb pilgrims. Headman of Besakih, Jero Mangku Widiartha, when met at Besakih not long ago said that the management board has been welcomed by the local community. One of the impacts that has been felt since the presence of the OM is the impression of extortion that has beena resolved with a single official levy. Each traveler is now charged at IDR 60,000 including guide service and other fees during their visit to Besakih. In addition, the environemnt around the temple has been organized and looks much cleaner. However, the merchant relocation issue remains unresolved. Jero Mangku Widiartha said the relocation plan has become a serious discussion between the apparatus of customary village and the operations management. According to him, the merchants need to be found a special location whose number can reach hundreds of people at the time of piodalan or grandiose ritual at Besakih. As planned, the location is centralized in the west of ??settlement. With such arrangement, the merchants will not line up at the roadside. Other than location to sell, the area is also equipped with parking lot. There are several fields that can be used to localize the merchants. “This is the first step, so that with this arrangement, the merchants will be no longer selling on the street,” said Widiartha. Moreover, if the government is willing to help acquire the private
land at the roadside, the issue on chaotic merchants at roadside can be resolved. However, he admitted the step is quite difficult because the land belongs to private property. Nevertheless, the merchant relocation is still trying to provide comfort for pilgrims and travelers that would like to have a closer look at the beauty and grandeur of Besakih Temple. In addition to arranging the merchant, the coaching for tour guide also becomes one of the focuses. Local tour guide should work professionally, so that it can provide correct explanation about Besakih and keep away from the character of extortion. Tour guide continues to receive coaching. With the presence of the OM, there is also a profit sharing as established through the MOU. As much as 25 percent will go to customary village, 50 percent goes to temple and another 25 percent go to local government. Widiartha said the profit sharing has been arranged in the MoU with the government of Karangasem. Operations Manager of Besakih Management Board, I Ketut Sumendra, said that since the management works, the arrangement has become a major focus. As a part of the arrangement, tour guides continue to get training in collaboration with relevant agencies in Bali. He emphasized that the management board of Besakih will continue to make improvement at Besakih and attempt to provide comfort and serenity for pilgrims and travelers. He agreed that merchant relocation issue should be resolved. However, it cannot be done spontaneously, but must be planned carefully. Such an effort will face many challenges and obstacles in the field, but if it can give clean and comfort impression, it will become one the options that has to be resolved. (kmb31)

South Korea culls 50,000 farm birds as 2 new bird flu cases confirmed
SEOUL - South Korea has culled some 50,000 farm birds as two cases of bird flu were confirmed on Wednesday, bringing the country’s cull this winter to nearly 35 million - more than a fifth of all South Korean poultry - since a first bird flu case was found late last year. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said in a statement that a case of H5N6 avian influenza was discovered at a chicken farm north of Seoul, while another case of the H5N8 strain was found at a duck farm in the southwestern part of the country. The new cases represent a setback for Korea, fighting its worst-ever bird flu epidemic since mid-November last year. The spread of the virus had appeared to be waning since late January. Bird flu fears are spreading across the world. Most recently, the United States reported an outbreak, prompting Asian nations including South Korea to halt imports of U.S. poultry. Korea had not seen any new cases of bird flu for 15 days up to Feb. 22, when an outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N8
bird flu virus was confirmed at a duck farm. Since then a total of 13 cases have been reported, the ministry said. LIMITED IMPORTS
South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong have limited imports of U.S. poultry after the United States detected its first case this year of avian flu on a commercial chicken farm, South Korea’s government and a U.S. trade group said on Monday. South Korea will ban imports of U.S. poultry and eggs after a strain of H7 bird flu virus was confirmed on Sunday at a chicken farm in Tennessee, South Korea’s agriculture ministry said. Japan and Taiwan will block poultry from the state, while Hong Kong will restrict imports from the Tennessee county where the infected flock was located,
said James Sumner, president of the USA Poultry & Egg Export Council, a trade group. The limits will reduce the potential for major U.S. chicken companies, such as Tyson Foods Inc and Pilgrim’s Pride , to sell poultry overseas. The Tennessee farm infected with avian flu was contracted to sell birds to Tyson. South Korea’s import ban took effect on Monday, the agriculture ministry said in a statement. Live poultry and eggs are subject to the ban, while heat-treated chicken meat and egg products can still be imported, the statement noted. South Korea, Asia’s fourthlargest economy, has been importing eggs from the United States as its worst-ever bird flu, or avian influenza (AI), outbreak has tightened the country’s egg supplies. Gene activity in the nose may signal lung cancer
BOSTON - Genetic changes in the cells lining the inside of the nose might someday help doctors diagnose lung cancer, a recent study suggests. “The idea that you don’t have to sample the disease tissue but can diagnose presence of disease using relatively accessible cells that are far from the tumor . . . is a paradigm that can impact many cancers,” Dr. Avrum Spira from Boston University School of Medicine, a member of the study team, told Reuters Health by email. The layer of cells that covers the surfaces of the body and lines the cavities is known as the epithelium. Researchers found that distinctive changes in gene activity in the nasal epithelium of lung cancer patients closely parallel the changes seen in lung epithelium and can distinguish between benign lung disease and cancer. “I think the most interesting finding was the genomic changes in the nasal epithelium of lung cancer patients mirror so closely those found in the lower airway,” Spira said. The researchers thought the nose would be “a reasonable surrogate for the ‘field of injury’ in the bronchial airway,” he added, but the
surprisingly strong concordance between the nose and lower airway gave them the encouragement to develop a nasal biomarker for lung cancer detection. “Pulmonary nodules represent a growing diagnostic dilemma in the U.S. as we have started to screen for lung cancer,” Spira said. “A nasal swab that is highly sensitive for lung cancer in this setting would enable physicians to avoid unnecessary invasive biopsies in nodule patients who are unlikely to have lung cancer.” Past research has found that gene expression profiles from normal bronchial epithelial cells can distinguish smokers and former smokers with lung cancer from individuals with benign lung disease, and that nasal and bronchial epithelium respond similarly to tobacco smoke. Spira’s team sought to determine whether cancer-associated gene expression in the nasal epithelium might be useful for detecting lung cancer in current and former smokers. They identified 535 genes that had different activity patterns in the nasal epithelium of patients with lung cancer versus those with
benign disease. Cancer-associated gene changes correlated significantly between nasal epithelium and bronchial epithelium samples, and the genes that were more active in nasal epithelium of patients with lung cancer were among the genes whose activity was most increased in bronchial epithelium of patients with cancer. When researchers compared models doctors might use to determine the likelihood of lung cancer, nasal gene activity was more accurate than clinical risk factors alone for diagnosing lung cancer, according to the Journal of the National Cancer Institute report. The combination of clinical factors and gene activity score accurately predicted cancer 91 percent of the time, compared to 79 percent for the model based on risk factors. The combined model also had 85 percent accuracy differentiating lung cancer from benign disease, compared to 73 percent. “One of the big-picture messages for physicians is that molecular tests like this one are emerging as part of precision medicine approaches for early cancer detection,” Spira said. SEMARAPURA — Besan village in Dawan is known as the best producer of palm sugar and is sold for more thatn other places with an average price of IDR 25,000 per kilogram. However, due to reducing number of the tappers, the production of palm sugar is now limited as many people have turned to the production of jackfruit toffee as the raw ingredients for this product can be easily obtained from people’s gardens. Nyoman Suela is a 50 year old palm sugar producer from Kawan hamlet, Besan said that he has been engaged in the jackfruit toffee making business for some time as the palm sugar has been getting harder to come by. Many residents of Besan village have stopped tapping sugar because it is considered to be quite a risky job. Nyoman Suela explained that formely nearly everyone in Besan produced plam sugar. Every family had at least one or two people who served as sugar tappers. However the profits gained from this activity are not always certain, so many people finally switched professions. “Many residents have found work outside the village. Now, there are only 50 palm sugar makers that are operating here”, he said when met on Monday (Mar. 6). Suela admitted that he makes more jackfruit toffee than palm sugar because of the lack of tappers. “Palm sugar can only be produced if we have the raw material. We can only produce about 5 kilograms of palm sugar now”
he said. His palm sugar is sold for IDR 25,000 per kilogram however this can go up to IDR 40,00 per kilo if it is made into rown sugar. However it is hard to market this product as most of the customers are hotels, whiel he mostly sells in traditinoal markets. Whereas Suela can only produce 400 pieces of jackfruit toffee a day right now. Production is down due to the limited availability of jackfruit. “Formerly, I could produce 1,200 pieces every day, but now this number has droped to only 400 pieces every day”, he said. A price hike in the cost of raw material has doubled, from IDR 12,000 to IDR 25,000. Nengah Yuliati should pay higher for the production cost, she would not increase the selling price of her toffee. She sells her jackfruit toffee product for IDR 1,000 per piece. According to the entrepreneur who has been involved in the business for four years, the jackfruit toffee production is meant to meet market demand of Balinese typical souvenir shops in Denpasar. Jackfruit toffee is processed traditionally by using firewood. In addition, the ingredient only consists of sugar and jackfruit without the addition of preservatives. Although created naturally, Nyoman Suela guaranteed that his jackfruit toffee can last longer up to three months. It is enabled by production process of drying until the moisture content is reduced drastically. (dwa)

MANGUPURA - Currently in Indonesia, most live on board (LOB) cruises are still owned by foreign business -people. Local entrepreneurs are now being encouraged to develop this type of business.
Marine tourism businessman, I Gede Wiratha, said that import taxes on large ships still pose a problem for local enrepreneurs. He therefor hopes that the current 80% import taxes on such vessels can be alieviated. Wiratha explained that there are three kinds of maritime activities that involve cruise ships. Firstly there are day cruises on which passengers do not live on board but are provided with faciltities and food. The second type is known as live on board (LOB) cruises that usually involves diving and fishing and are equiped with about 20 cabins, but do not have boutiques, spas bars and other such facitlities. The third type of cruise ships are known as cruise liners whose voyages cross boundaries of provinces, nations or continents. “In Indonesia, cruise lines can only be develped in Bali. I think only two types of cruise ships can operate in Bali. Right now, there are about 5 companies that offer day crusies and not more than 10 companies in Indonesia operate live on board vessesls, and all of them are owned by foreigners”, said Wiratha. The biggest obsttacle he said is the procurement of ships. One cannot simply procure a boat and start running a business. Speed, safety and licensing issues must be dealth with specifically in terms of insurrance. “Without insurrance at sea, no visitor will want to use cruise ship services”, he said. Other than the matter of ship procurement, human ressources is another obstacle as most Balinese people preffer to work overseas making it hard to entertain travellers and make sure that they feel satisfied with their onboard experience in Bali. When asked about the number of shipyards in Indonesia, Wiratha stated that cruise ship lines cannot be made in Indoneisa, pointing out that Japan, South Korea, Australia

This number includes maritime tourists. Indonesia does not however have marine tourist destinations to accommodate large numbers of people. Currently the central government is deciding between Lake Toba, Playang Peninsula, Cape Lesung, Borobudur, Mandalika, Labuan Bajo, Wakatobi or Raja Ampat to see which destinations will be prioritised for drawing arger numbers of visitors. “We know that marine tourism involves several aspects such as cruising, diving and surfing while enjoying beautiful locations
in other destinations”, he said. This trend has been growing ove rth past five years, he said. Therefore, through this FGD he would like to discuss how much of an impact LOB cruises on drawing tourists. Of course, these are relatively new activities, so more profound studies are needed. “We will be mapping out available facilities in order to facilitate the increasing numbers of tourist sseeking marine activities”, he said. As many people know, there are many locations for marine tourism in Indoneisa. From Papua to Aceh. Within the past 3-5 years, more marine tourisms have started operating in eastern Indonesia particularly in Raja Ampat and Labuan Bajo. The type of vessels used for LOB cruises vary, ranging from traditional to high-end imported vessels that charge a high rate. “Rates per day can reach USD 380 and there are also some for EUR 300-500. ated for diving, or combinations diving, surfing, snorkeling and leisure. Vessels used especially for leisure include motorised yachts, super yachts and sailing yachts. In Indonesia, there are 70 licensed LOB vessels specifically used for diving, while there are 50 cruise ships that offer a combination of activities for commercial purposes. Non-commercial private yacht amounts to 250 vessels that are predominantly owned by Indonesian citizens but most of them fly foreign flags. “There are many simple traditional LOBs but we have not collected data about them”, he added. Currently, he said, most cruise businesses are still run out by foreign business people. Clear rules will therefor be made to explain why local investors do not develop such businesses. This FGD is expected to accommodate some of the imput provided related to LOBS. “This is just the initial stage and the results of these discussions will be taken to higher coordination meetings in the Ministry for Maritime Affairs”, he concluded. a significant impact on inflationary pressure. “But, it should be noted that inflation went up over January and Febuary, but surely there is another cause for this” he said. Inflation is mainly caused by volatile food prices resulting from the effect that bad weather has on production. In terms of demand as a factor, there were many international events throughout the month, which automatically has an impact
on inflation. “In terms of administered price, obviously the tariff of electricity, LPG, and the increase in vehicle registration fees also trigger inflation”, he added. Nevertheless, Karana hoped that inflation will subside in the coming months. According to information from the national weather service (BMKG), weather at the end of March could be unsettling. EL Nino remains a threat for potential
drought. “However, information from the regional food operation (OPD) indicates that in March there will be an increase in harvest yields of rice, peppers, onions and so on”, said Karana, adding that this will help inflation recover. KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak struck a softer tone with North Korea on Wednesday, a day after accusing it of treating Malaysians as “hostages” amid a diplomatic meltdown over the murder of the estranged halfbrother of the North’s leader. Malaysian police have identified eight North Koreans wanted for questioning in connection with the killing of Kim Jong Nam who was killed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Feb. 13 by assassins who Malaysian police say used a super-toxic nerve agent that killed him within 20 minutes. Police say three of them are hiding at the North Korean embassy. In a bid to “ensure the safety” of its diplomats and citizens in Malaysia, North Korea retaliated on Tuesday by banning Malaysians from leaving the country until the case was “properly solved.” Najib initially denounced that move as an “abhorrent act” while ordering a reciprocal ban. In Malaysia’s Borneo state of Sarawak, 37 North Koreans were detained on Tuesday at a construc-
tion site for overstaying their visas, a state government source said. They were among 176 North Koreans working in Sarawak. Those who overstayed, would be given 30-day extensions, however, an immigration source said. But faced with the priority of securing the release of the 11 Malaysians stuck in North Korea, Najib sounded more conciliatory in parliament on Wednesday, saying there were no plans to cut diplomatic ties. NO THREAT TO SAFETY “We are a country that’s friendly to them,” Najib said, after reassuring MPs that there was no threat to the safety of the three embassy staff, six family members, and two other Malaysians in North Korea. “We didn’t pick a quarrel with

SEOUL - North Korea’s latest weapons test showed it can accurately fire multiple medium-range ballistic missiles, an attack strategy that experts said could test the advanced U.S. THAAD anti-missile system which began to arrive in South Korea on Tuesday. Advances in North Korea’s banned missile programme have also caused concern in Tokyo, where sources with knowledge of the government’s thinking said a “swarm-like” attack using multiple missiles could overwhelm Japan’s already stretched defences. Images released by North Korean state media showed leader Kim Jong Un presiding over Monday’s simultaneous launch of four ballistic missiles, which landed in seas off Japan’s northwest. In response, the United States started the early deployment of its advanced Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile system in South Korea on Tuesday, despite angry opposition from China. THAAD’s job is to intercept and destroy a ballistic missile in its final phase of flight, either inside or just outside the earth’s atmosphere. But with its specifications secret and having never been used in wartime, THAAD’s ability to deal with a barrage of missiles at the same time is uncertain. “The use of multiple shots, timed ever-more-closely together, appears destined to rehearse saturating a defensive system by presenting it with an overwhelmingly complex radar picture,” Joshua Pollack, editor of the U.S.-based Nonproliferation Review, said of Monday’s launch. South Korean military and intelligence officials said the four North Korean missiles appeared to be an upgraded version of the Scud type - the
“ER” or “Extended Range” Scud. “An advantage of the ER Scud over the Rodong is that the ER Scud is much cheaper,” said Jeffrey Lewis of the California-based Middlebury Institute of International Studies. “So North Korea can presumably build more ER Scuds to overwhelm THAAD,” Lewis said. STRIKE CAPABILITY Most experts believe North Korea would likely need to fire off more than four ballistic missiles at one time to inundate a THAAD battery - perhaps 10, according to Michael Elleman, a U.S.-based rocket expert with the International Institute for Strategic Studies. “I would be disappointed to learn that four attacking missiles would overwhelm THAAD,” he said. Manufacturer Lockheed Martin declined to comment. “The specific number of threats (THAAD) can engage at once is classified, but we have successfully demonstrated the ability to engage multiple targets,” Pentagon spokesman Gary Ross said. A greater concern than multiple Scud-type missiles would be if North Korea proved the ability to fire simultaneous salvos of other types of missiles that could carry heavier payload, said one U.S. official, speaking on the condition of anonymity. North Korea theoretically had enough launchers to send at least 36 ballistic missiles of various types at the same time, said Joseph S. Bermudez, a strategic advisor at Allsource Analysis Inc and contributor to the 38 North Korea monitoring project. China’s exports rise in first 2 months of the year
BEIJING — CHINA’S IMPORTS and exports grew in the first two months of this year after weakening toward the end of 2016. Exports rose 4 percent from a year earlier in January and February to $302.8 billion, rebounding from a 6.1 percent contraction in December, customs data showed Wednesday. Imports rose 26.4 percent to $260.6 billion, accelerating from December’s 3.1 percent growth. Analysts often look at January and February together to screen out the impact of the two-week Lunar New Year holiday, which begins on a different date each year. “The latest trade data suggest that, seasonal distortions aside, both exports and imports strengthened at the start of 2017,” Julian Evans-Pritchard of Capital Economics said in a report. Last year, exports shrank by 7.7 percent. Weak global demand is a drag on Beijing’s efforts to nurture self-sustaining economic growth based on consumer spending instead of TRADE AND INVESTMENT. Those plans call for keeping exports steady to avoid job losses in industries that employ millions of people. “We expect external demand to remain fairly strong during the coming quarters,” said Evans-Pritchard. “However, we doubt that the current pace of import growth can be sustained,” he said. “With growth in China currently running above trend and both monetary and fiscal policy being tightened, it is only a matter of time before we see a slowdown in domestic demand.”
The country’s top economic official, Premier Li Keqiang, on Sunday trimmed this year’s official growth target to “around 6.5 percent,” down from last year’s expansion of 6.7 percent. If achieved, that would be China’s weakest rate since 1990 but among the world’s strongest this year. The premier warned China faces growing uncertainty due to rising global pressure for trade controls. Chinese leaders have defended free trade in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s promises to raise duties on Chinese goods, though Beijing’s trading partners complain China is the most closed major economy. China’s global trade surplus for January and February contracted by 56 percent to $42.1 billion. Its surplus with the United States declined 12.1 percent to $31.8 billion, while that with the 28-nation European Union, its biggest trading partner, shrank 23.3 percent to $18.7 billion. CHINA’S IMPORTbill has been boosted by higher prices for metals and other commodities for which its factories are among the biggest buyers. That has helped to shrink its trade surpluses. For the month of February, exports shrank 1.3 percent to $120.1 billion. Imports jumped 38.1 percent to $129.2 billion. China ran a trade deficit of $9.1 billion in February, as it usually does early in the year as factories replenish raw materials and components following their holiday shutdown.(ap)

Philip Hammond said he will outline his plan for the 2017-18 fiscal year laying out what the government believes will be the foundations for a “stronger, fairer, better Britain” outside the EU. The caution over spending in the long term comes despite an improvement in the government’s finances. Hammond said Britain is still 1.7 trillion pounds in debt, although the latest figures show government borrowing during the 2016-17 year will probably be
about 12 billion pounds less than previously forecast. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development predicted U.K. growth of 1.6 percent this year, up from the 1.2 percent predicted in November. One of the more closely watched aspects of the budget will be what sort of measures will be offered to help small firms facing higher taxes from so-called business rates. Many small businesses are in revolt over the first rise in rates for seven
years. Most of the increases will be evident in London as much of the change is due to the revaluation of property. More than a third of small firms expect their business rates to rise. One in five expected their annual bill to rise by more than 40 percent, a survey from the Federation of Small Businesses said. Former chancellor George Osborne offered a tweet of support to Hammond on the big day. “Good luck Philip with the first of what I hope will be many successful budgets,” Osborne wrote. “Standing there with that red box is quite a moment. The means used is called agni hotra”, he said. The Pendet Pasepan Dance is a calssical Balinese ritual that is particular to Nusa Penida and is filled with spiritual nuances. The number of dancers involved is not determined, but depends on how many people are able to carry it out. It is categorized as a sacred dance because it is closely related to spiritual arts and ritual traditions . “It is danced with sincerity by young women who want to devote themselves sincerely and flexibly”, said Rai Sudiarta. This pendet dance is accompanied by terompongan gamelan instruments that carry classical spiritual meaning. The discussion transcripts showed that CIA hackers could get into Apple Inc iPhones, Google Inc Android devices and other gadgets in order to capture text and voice messages before they were encrypted with sophisticated software. Cyber security experts disagreed about the extent of the fallout from the data dump, but said a lot would depend on whether WikiLeaks followed through on a threat to publish the actual hacking tools that could do damage. Reuters could not immediately verify the contents of the published documents, but several contractors and private cyber security experts said the materials, dated between 2013 and 2016, appeared to be legitimate. A longtime intelligence contractor with expertise in U.S. hacking tools told Reuters the documents included correct “cover” terms describing active cyber programs. Among the most noteworthy WikiLeaks claims is that the Central Intelligence Agency, in partnership with other U.S. and foreign agencies, has been able to bypass the encryption on popular messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal. The files did not indicate the actual encryption of Signal or other secure messaging apps had been compromised. The information in what WikiLeaks said were 7,818 web pages with 943 attachments appears to represent the latest breach in recent years of classified material from U.S. intelligence agencies. Security experts differed over how much the disclosures could damage U.S. cyber espionage. Many said that, while harmful, they do not compare to former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden’s revelations in 2013 of mass NSA data collection.

“This is a big dump about extremely sophisticated tools that can be used to target individual user devices ... I haven’t yet come across the mass exploiting of mobile devices,” said Tarah Wheeler, senior director of engineering and principal security advocate for Symantec. Stuart McClure, CEO of Cylance, an Irvine, California, cyber security firm, said that one of the most significant disclosures shows how CIA hackers cover their tracks by leaving electronic trails suggesting they are from Russia, China and Iran rather than the United States. Other revelations show how the CIA took advantage of vulnerabilities that are known, if not widely publicized. In one case, the documents say, U.S. and British personnel, under a program known as Weeping Angel, developed ways to take over a Samsung smart television, making it appear it was off when in fact it was recording conversations in the room. The CIA and White House declined comment. “We do not comment on the authenticity or content of purported intelligence documents,” CIA spokesman Jonathan Liu said in a statement. Google declined to comment on the purported hacking of its Android platform, but said it was investigating the matter. Snowden on Twitter said the files amount to the first public evidence that the U.S. government secretly buys software to exploit technology, referring to a table published by WikiLeaks that appeared to list various Apple iOS flaws purchased by the CIA and other intelligence agencies. Apple Inc did not respond to a request for comment. The documents refer to means for accessing phones directly in order to catch messages before they are protected by end-to-end encryption tools like Signal. Signal inventor Moxie Marlinspike said he took that as “confirmation that what we’re doing is working.” Signal and the like are “pushing intelligence agencies from a world of undetectable mass surveillance to a world where they have to use expensive, high-risk, extremely targeted attacks.” (rtr)

Hawaii to file first court challenge to new Trump travel order
SAN FRANCISCO - The state of Hawaii said it will ask a federal court on Wednesday for an emergency halt to President Donald Trump’s new executive order restricting travel from six Muslim-majority countries, becoming the first state to challenge the ban in court. In a court filing on Tuesday, Hawaii said it would seek a temporary restraining order against the new travel ban. Hawaii’s suit against the original executive order was put on hold. The Trump administration this week issued the new executive order that supplanted an earlier, more sweeping one which had been challenged in court by several states in addition to Hawaii. The new order is much more narrowly tailored than the first one issued in January. It keeps a 90-day ban on travel to the United States by citizens of Iran, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen but excludes Iraq, and applies the restriction only to new visa applicants. “To be sure, the new executive order covers fewer people than the old one,” Neal Katyal, one of the lead attorneys for Hawaii, said in an interview with CNN. He said the new travel ban still “suffers from the same constitutional and statutory defects.” “We are confident that the president’s actions are lawful to protect the national security of our country,” the Justice Department said in a statement. In a joint filing, Hawaii and the
U.S. government asked for oral arguments in the case to be held March 15, a day before the new travel order is set to take effect. Separately, in a case brought by Washington state against the first Trump travel order, the Justice Department on Tuesday said it would voluntarily dismiss its own appeal of a Seattle federal court ruling that had suspended the order. Washington state did not oppose the administration’s request to end its appeal, the filing said. Immigration advocates said the new ban still discriminates against Muslims and fails to address some of their concerns with the previous directive. Legal experts said the new ban would be harder to challenge because it affects fewer people living in the United States and allows more exemptions to protect them. Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson on Monday said his office was evaluating whether it would challenge the new order and would likely decide this week. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals last month had blocked Trump’s first order, saying Washington state would likely be able to prove that it violated constitutional protections. Indonesia has bilateral meetings with five states
JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo has had bilateral meetings with Bangladesh, Mozambique, Yemen, Iran and India on the sidelines of IORA (Indian Ocean Rim Association) Summit 2017 held in Jakarta on March 7. During the meeting, President Joko Widodo was accompanied among others by the Coordinating Minister for Economy, Darmin Nasution, Minister of the State Secretariat Pratikno, Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita and Deputy Foreign Minister A.M. Fachir. “At the first bilateral meeting with Bangladesh, we discussed on trade, which we have obtained large surplus. Bangladesh wants to order another 200 railway carriages,” Nasution said. Bangladesh delegation led by Prime Minister Hasina Wajed. “They said they have cheap and good pharmaceutical industries, and want to cooperate. The President said that the cooperation can be done between private sectors or state-owned enterprises within the framework of business to business,” Nasution explained. President Joko Widodo also met with Mozambique delegation led by President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi. “Mozambique is a maritime country with strong fisheries and agriculture sectors, particularly cotton. We also discussed on illegal fishing, as well as how Indonesia handle such issue,” Nasution added. IORA Summit ends with Jakarta Concord
JAKARTA - Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) member countries have produced Jakarta Accord to reaffirm their commitment to continue to increase their cooperation, Indonesian President Joko Widodo said here on Tuesday.
In a joint press statement with South Africas President Jacob Zuma and Australias Prime minister Malcolm Turnbull after the IORA summit President Joko Widodo said this first IORA summit was a strategic and progressive step of leaders of IORA member countries to encourage IORA to be able to move quicker and face current situation as well as future challenges. All leaders at the summit had been committed to continue to increase cooperation among member countries. “This summit is a milestone to reform commitment of IORA member countries to intensify their cooperation. All the leaders are aware of the challenges being faced. All the leaders are also aware of their potentials and also the importance of safeguarding the Indian Ocean, an ocean that unites IORA members,” he said. In view of that to reaffirm their cooperation commitment they agreed to produce Jakarta Accord containing six commitments of IORA member countries. The six commitments that have been reached includes advancing maritime security and safety, increasing trade and investment cooperation, advancing development and exploitation fisheries a responsible and sustainable way. Others include strengthening disaster risk management, academic and scientific cooperation and advancing cooperation in the fields of tourism and culture. “Besides the six cooperation commitments IORA leaders also encouraged IORA to strengthen cooperation in the three issues namely blue economy, women empowerment and democracy, good governance, cor-
ruption eradication and human rights,” the president said. IORA Member countries also agreed to create a secure and peaceful Indian Ocean including honoring UNCLOS 1982 (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea) that has been the constitution to regulate the sea. “A peaceful and secure Indian Ocean is the main prerequisite for the implementation of cooperation in other fields. One thing that has been warmly welcomed by IORA leaders is the implementation of IORA Business Summit. The network and cooperation between businesses must continue to be strengthened in the future,” he remarked. In response to Jakarta Concord President Jacob Zuma said the commitments would be able to increase cooperation and existence of IORA. BARCELONA - Brazilian Felipe Massa completed two and a half race distances and put his Williams team on top of the timesheets as Formula One’s final preseason test got underway in Barcelona on Tuesday. Massa, brought back in January after his former team mate Valtteri Bottas moved to Mercedes as replacement for retired world champion Nico Rosberg, completed 168 laps of the Circuit de Catalunya. His eye-catching tally was matched only by Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, who ended up third fastest (1:19.906) behind Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo (1:19.900).
“I don’t remember before doing a day with 168 laps in my career,” said the 35year-old Massa, whose fastest was one minute 19.726 seconds. “It was a lot of laps and I can feel it a bit on my body, but I am good. I feel in good shape for the new season,” he added. Triple world champion Lewis Hamilton, the bookmakers’ favourite for a fourth title this year, was fourth fastest with a total of 49 laps. BARCELONA - Brazilian Felipe Massa completed two and a half race distances and put his Williams team on top of the timesheets as Formula One’s final preseason test got underway in Barcelona on Tuesday. Massa, brought back in January after his former team mate Valtteri Bottas moved to Mercedes as replacement for retired world champion Nico Rosberg, completed 168 laps of the Circuit de Catalunya. His eye-catching tally was matched only by Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, who ended up third fastest (1:19.906) behind Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo (1:19.900).
“I don’t remember before doing a day with 168 laps in my career,” said the 35year-old Massa, whose fastest was one minute 19.726 seconds. “It was a lot of laps and I can feel it a bit on my body, but I am good. WikiLeaks says it releases files on CIA cyber spying tools
WASHINGTON - Anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks on Tuesday published what it said were thousands of pages of internal CIA discussions about hacking techniques used over several years, renewing concerns about the security of consumer electronics and embarrassing yet another U.S. intelligence agency.
The discussion transcripts showed that CIA hackers could get into Apple Inc iPhones, Google Inc Android devices and other gadgets in order to capture text and voice messages before they were encrypted with sophisticated software. Cyber security experts disagreed about the extent of the fallout from the data dump, but said a lot would depend on whether WikiLeaks followed through on a threat to publish the actual hacking tools that could do damage. Reuters could not immediately verify the contents of the published documents, but several contractors and private cyber security experts said the materials, dated between 2013 and 2016, appeared to be legitimate. A longtime intelligence contractor with expertise in U.S. hacking tools told Reuters the documents included correct “cover” terms describing active cyber programs. Among the most noteworthy WikiLeaks claims is that the Central Intelligence Agency, in partnership with other U.S. and foreign agencies, has been able to bypass the encryption on popular messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal. The files did not indicate the actual encryption of Signal or other secure messaging apps had been compromised. The information in what WikiLeaks said were 7,818 web pages with 943 attachments appears to represent the latest breach in recent years of classified material from U.S. intelligence agencies. Security experts differed over how much the disclosures could damage U.S. cyber espionage. Many said that, while harmful, they do not compare to former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden’s revelations in 2013 of mass NSA data collection.

“This is a big dump about extremely sophisticated tools that can be used to target individual user devices ... I haven’t yet come across the mass exploiting of mobile devices,” said Tarah Wheeler, senior director of engineering and principal security advocate for Symantec. Stuart McClure, CEO of Cylance, an Irvine, California, cyber security firm, said that one of the most significant disclosures shows how CIA hackers cover their tracks by leaving electronic trails suggesting they are from Russia, China and Iran rather than the United States. Other revelations show how the CIA took advantage of vulnerabilities that are known, if not widely publicized. In one case, the documents say, U.S. and British personnel, under a program known as Weeping Angel, developed ways to take over a Samsung smart television, making it appear it was off when in fact it was recording conversations in the room. The CIA and White House declined comment. “We do not comment on the authenticity or content of purported intelligence documents,” CIA spokesman Jonathan Liu said in a statement. Google declined to comment on the purported hacking of its Android platform, but said it was investigating the matter. Snowden on Twitter said the files amount to the first public evidence that the U.S. government secretly buys software to exploit technology, referring to a table published by WikiLeaks that appeared to list various Apple iOS flaws purchased by the CIA and other intelligence agencies. Apple Inc did not respond to a request for comment. The documents refer to means for accessing phones directly in order to catch messages before they are protected by end-to-end encryption tools like Signal. Signal inventor Moxie Marlinspike said he took that as “confirmation that what we’re doing is working.” Signal and the like are “pushing intelligence agencies from a world of undetectable mass surveillance to a world where they have to use expensive, high-risk, extremely targeted attacks.” (rtr)

Hawaii to file first court challenge to new Trump travel order
SAN FRANCISCO - The state of Hawaii said it will ask a federal court on Wednesday for an emergency halt to President Donald Trump’s new executive order restricting travel from six Muslim-majority countries, becoming the first state to challenge the ban in court. In a court filing on Tuesday, Hawaii said it would seek a temporary restraining order against the new travel ban. Hawaii’s suit against the original executive order was put on hold. The Trump administration this week issued the new executive order that supplanted an earlier, more sweeping one which had been challenged in court by several states in addition to Hawaii. The new order is much more narrowly tailored than the first one issued in January. It keeps a 90-day ban on travel to the United States by citizens of Iran, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen but excludes Iraq, and applies the restriction only to new visa applicants. “To be sure, the new executive order covers fewer people than the old one,” Neal Katyal, one of the lead attorneys for Hawaii, said in an interview with CNN. Indonesia has bilateral meetings with five states
JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo has had bilateral meetings with Bangladesh, Mozambique, Yemen, Iran and India on the sidelines of IORA (Indian Ocean Rim Association) Summit 2017 held in Jakarta on March 7. During the meeting, President Joko Widodo was accompanied among others by the Coordinating Minister for Economy, Darmin Nasution, Minister of the State Secretariat Pratikno, Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita and Deputy Foreign Minister A.M. Fachir. “At the first bilateral meeting with Bangladesh, we discussed on trade, which we have obtained large surplus. Bangladesh wants to order another 200 railway carriages,” Nasution said. Bangladesh delegation led by Prime Minister Hasina Wajed. “They said they have cheap and good pharmaceutical industries, and want to cooperate. The President said that the cooperation can be done between private sectors or state-owned enterprises within the framework of business to business,” Nasution explained. President Joko Widodo also met with Mozambique delegation led by President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi. “Mozambique is a maritime country with strong fisheries and agriculture sectors, particularly cotton. We also discussed on illegal fishing, as well as how Indonesia handle such issue,” Nasution added. IORA Summit ends with Jakarta Concord
JAKARTA - Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) member countries have produced Jakarta Accord to reaffirm their commitment to continue to increase their cooperation, Indonesian President Joko Widodo said here on Tuesday.
In a joint press statement with South Africas President Jacob Zuma and Australias Prime minister Malcolm Turnbull after the IORA summit President Joko Widodo said this first IORA summit was a strategic and progressive step of leaders of IORA member countries to encourage IORA to be able to move quicker and face current situation as well as future challenges. All leaders at the summit had been committed to continue to increase cooperation among member countries. “This summit is a milestone to reform commitment of IORA member countries to intensify their cooperation. All the leaders are aware of the challenges being faced. All the leaders are also aware of their potentials and also the importance of safeguarding the Indian Ocean, an ocean that unites IORA members,” he said. In view of that to reaffirm their cooperation commitment they agreed to produce Jakarta Accord containing six commitments of IORA member countries. The six commitments that have been reached includes advancing maritime security and safety, increasing trade and investment cooperation, advancing development and exploitation fisheries a responsible and sustainable way. Others include strengthening disaster risk management, academic and scientific cooperation and advancing cooperation in the fields of tourism and culture. “Besides the six cooperation commitments IORA leaders also encouraged IORA to strengthen cooperation in the three issues namely blue economy, women empowerment and democracy, good governance, cor-
ruption eradication and human rights,” the president said. IORA Member countries also agreed to create a secure and peaceful Indian Ocean including honoring UNCLOS 1982 (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea) that has been the constitution to regulate the sea. “A peaceful and secure Indian Ocean is the main prerequisite for the implementation of cooperation in other fields. One thing that has been warmly welcomed by IORA leaders is the implementation of IORA Business Summit. The network and cooperation between businesses must continue to be strengthened in the future,” he remarked. In response to Jakarta Concord President Jacob Zuma said the commitments would be able to increase cooperation and existence of IORA. Bali to become promising destination for Middle East tourists
SANUR - Bali, which has various attractive aspects ranging from natural beauty, culture, culinary, and religious diversity, is already known as one of the worlds best tourist destination. Despite being the most prominent tourist attraction in Indonesia, the Land of Gods is still overshadowed by other destinations, according to some foreign tourists. Tourists from the Middle East, for instance, prefer to visit Puncak, a mountain pass in West Java. The popular weekend destination for residents in greater Jakarta is even nicknamed “Arab Village,” considering the large number of Middle East tourists visiting the location,
which is famous for its tea plantation and fresh air. She noted that the promotion of Indonesian tourism in the Middle East countries still relied on the word-of-mouth method.
Tourists from Saudi Arabia, for example, visit Indonesia after being inspired by their families or colleagues who have visited the place earlier. Given such reality, the Ministry of Tourism is looking for a more intensive approach to attract Middle East tourists, by using leaders or famous people as endorsers. The visit of Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud for a six-day vacation in Bali, along with his entourage of 1.5 thousand delegates, is regarded as a fresh wind to expand Indonesias tourism industry. China’s exports rise in first 2 months of the year
BEIJING — CHINA’S IMPORTS and exports grew in the first two months of this year after weakening toward the end of 2016. Exports rose 4 percent from a year earlier in January and February to $302.8 billion, rebounding from a 6.1 percent contraction in December, customs data showed Wednesday. Imports rose 26.4 percent to $260.6 billion, accelerating from December’s 3.1 percent growth. Analysts often look at January and February together to screen out the impact of the two-week Lunar New Year holiday, which begins on a different date each year. “The latest trade data suggest that, seasonal distortions aside, both exports and imports strengthened at the start of 2017,” Julian Evans-Pritchard of Capital Economics said in a report. Last year, exports shrank by 7.7 percent. Weak global demand is a drag on Beijing’s efforts to nurture self-sustaining economic growth based on consumer spending instead of TRADE AND INVESTMENT. Those plans call for keeping exports steady to avoid job losses in industries that employ millions of people. “We expect external demand to remain fairly strong during the coming quarters,” said Evans-Pritchard. “However, we doubt that the current pace of import growth can be sustained,” he said. “With growth in China currently running above trend and both monetary and fiscal policy being tightened, it is only a matter of time before we see a slowdown in domestic demand.”
The country’s top economic official, Premier Li Keqiang, on Sunday trimmed this year’s official growth target to “around 6.5 percent,” down from last year’s expansion of 6.7 percent. If achieved, that would be China’s weakest rate since 1990 but among the world’s strongest this year. The premier warned China faces growing uncertainty due to rising global pressure for trade controls. Chinese leaders have defended free trade in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s promises to raise duties on Chinese goods, though Beijing’s trading partners complain China is the most closed major economy. China’s global trade surplus for January and February contracted by 56 percent to $42.1 billion. Its surplus with the United States declined 12.1 percent to $31.8 billion, while that with the 28-nation European Union, its biggest trading partner, shrank 23.3 percent to $18.7 billion. CHINA’S IMPORTbill has been boosted by higher prices for metals and other commodities for which its factories are among the biggest buyers. That has helped to shrink its trade surpluses. For the month of February, exports shrank 1.3 percent to $120.1 billion. Imports jumped 38.1 percent to $129.2 billion. China ran a trade deficit of $9.1 billion in February, as it usually does early in the year as factories replenish raw materials and components following their holiday shutdown.(ap)

Philip Hammond said he will outline his plan for the 2017-18 fiscal year laying out what the government believes will be the foundations for a “stronger, fairer, better Britain” outside the EU. The caution over spending in the long term comes despite an improvement in the government’s finances. Hammond said Britain is still 1.7 trillion pounds in debt, although the latest figures show government borrowing during the 2016-17 year will probably be
about 12 billion pounds less than previously forecast. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development predicted U.K. growth of 1.6 percent this year, up from the 1.2 percent predicted in November. One of the more closely watched aspects of the budget will be what sort of measures will be offered to help small firms facing higher taxes from so-called business rates. Many small businesses are in revolt over the first rise in rates for seven
years. Most of the increases will be evident in London as much of the change is due to the revaluation of property. More than a third of small firms expect their business rates to rise. One in five expected their annual bill to rise by more than 40 percent, a survey from the Federation of Small Businesses said. Former chancellor George Osborne offered a tweet of support to Hammond on the big day. “Good luck Philip with the first of what I hope will be many successful budgets,” Osborne wrote. “Standing there with that red box is quite a moment. Dance coordinator I Dewa Gede Rai Sudiarta explained that the form of this pendet is the same as other pendet dances exept that instead of holding flower offerings, the dancers carry the pasepan. “The concept of this sacred dance has to do with generating an aura of spiritual purity. The means used is called agni hotra”, he said. The Pendet Pasepan Dance is a calssical Balinese ritual that is particular to Nusa Penida and is filled with spiritual nuances. The number of dancers involved is not determined, but depends on how many people are able to carry it out. It is categorized as a sacred dance because it is closely related to spiritual arts and ritual traditions . “It is danced with sincerity by young women who want to devote themselves sincerely and flexibly”, said Rai Sudiarta. This pendet dance is accompanied by terompongan gamelan instruments that carry classical spiritual meaning. MANGUPURA - Currently in Indonesia, most live on board (LOB) cruises are still owned by foreign business -people. Local entrepreneurs are now being encouraged to develop this type of business.
Marine tourism businessman, I Gede Wiratha, said that import taxes on large ships still pose a problem for local enrepreneurs. He therefor hopes that the current 80% import taxes on such vessels can be alieviated. Wiratha explained that there are three kinds of maritime activities that involve cruise ships. Firstly there are day cruises on which passengers do not live on board but are provided with faciltities and food. The second type is known as live on board (LOB) cruises that usually involves diving and fishing and are equiped with about 20 cabins, but do not have boutiques, spas bars and other such facitlities. The third type of cruise ships are known as cruise liners whose voyages cross boundaries of provinces, nations or continents. “In Indonesia, cruise lines can only be develped in Bali. I think only two types of cruise ships can operate in Bali. Right now, there are about 5 companies that offer day crusies and not more than 10 companies in Indonesia operate live on board vessesls, and all of them are owned by foreigners”, said Wiratha. The biggest obsttacle he said is the procurement of ships. One cannot simply procure a boat and start running a business. Speed, safety and licensing issues must be dealth with specifically in terms of insurrance. “Without insurrance at sea, no visitor will want to use cruise ship services”, he said. Other than the matter of ship procurement, human ressources is another obstacle as most Balinese people preffer to work overseas making it hard to entertain travellers and make sure that they feel satisfied with their onboard experience in Bali. This number includes maritime tourists. Indonesia does not however have marine tourist destinations to accommodate large numbers of people. Currently the central government is deciding between Lake Toba, Playang Peninsula, Cape Lesung, Borobudur, Mandalika, Labuan Bajo, Wakatobi or Raja Ampat to see which destinations will be prioritised for drawing arger numbers of visitors. “We know that marine tourism involves several aspects such as cruising, diving and surfing while enjoying beautiful locations
in other destinations”, he said. This trend has been growing ove rth past five years, he said. Therefore, through this FGD he would like to discuss how much of an impact LOB cruises on drawing tourists. Of course, these are relatively new activities, so more profound studies are needed. “We will be mapping out available facilities in order to facilitate the increasing numbers of tourist sseeking marine activities”, he said. As many people know, there are many locations for marine tourism in Indoneisa. From Papua to Aceh. Within the past 3-5 years, more marine tourisms have started operating in eastern Indonesia particularly in Raja Ampat and Labuan Bajo. The type of vessels used for LOB cruises vary, ranging from traditional to high-end imported vessels that charge a high rate. “Rates per day can reach USD 380 and there are also some for EUR 300-500. ated for diving, or combinations diving, surfing, snorkeling and leisure. Vessels used especially for leisure include motorised yachts, super yachts and sailing yachts. In Indonesia, there are 70 licensed LOB vessels specifically used for diving, while there are 50 cruise ships that offer a combination of activities for commercial purposes. Non-commercial private yacht amounts to 250 vessels that are predominantly owned by Indonesian citizens but most of them fly foreign flags. “There are many simple traditional LOBs but we have not collected data about them”, he added. Currently, he said, most cruise businesses are still run out by foreign business people. Clear rules will therefor be made to explain why local investors do not develop such businesses. This FGD is expected to accommodate some of the imput provided related to LOBS. “This is just the initial stage and the results of these discussions will be taken to higher coordination meetings in the Ministry for Maritime Affairs”, he concluded. Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), shows that historically, religious celebrations in Bali, especially Nyepi, do not tend to have
a significant impact on inflationary pressure. “But, it should be noted that inflation went up over January and Febuary, but surely there is another cause for this” he said. Inflation is mainly caused by volatile food prices resulting from the effect that bad weather has on production. In terms of demand as a factor, there were many international events throughout the month, which automatically has an impact
on inflation. “In terms of administered price, obviously the tariff of electricity, LPG, and the increase in vehicle registration fees also trigger inflation”, he added. Nevertheless, Karana hoped that inflation will subside in the coming months. According to information from the national weather service (BMKG), weather at the end of March could be unsettling. EL Nino remains a threat for potential
drought. “However, information from the regional food operation (OPD) indicates that in March there will be an increase in harvest yields of rice, peppers, onions and so on”, said Karana, adding that this will help inflation recover. KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak struck a softer tone with North Korea on Wednesday, a day after accusing it of treating Malaysians as “hostages” amid a diplomatic meltdown over the murder of the estranged halfbrother of the North’s leader. Malaysian police have identified eight North Koreans wanted for questioning in connection with the killing of Kim Jong Nam who was killed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Feb. 13 by assassins who Malaysian police say used a super-toxic nerve agent that killed him within 20 minutes. Police say three of them are hiding at the North Korean embassy. In a bid to “ensure the safety” of its diplomats and citizens in Malaysia, North Korea retaliated on Tuesday by banning Malaysians from leaving the country until the case was “properly solved.” Najib initially denounced that move as an “abhorrent act” while ordering a reciprocal ban. In Malaysia’s Borneo state of Sarawak, 37 North Koreans were detained on Tuesday at a construc-
tion site for overstaying their visas, a state government source said. They were among 176 North Koreans working in Sarawak. Those who overstayed, would be given 30-day extensions, however, an immigration source said. But faced with the priority of securing the release of the 11 Malaysians stuck in North Korea, Najib sounded more conciliatory in parliament on Wednesday, saying there were no plans to cut diplomatic ties. SEOUL - North Korea’s latest weapons test showed it can accurately fire multiple medium-range ballistic missiles, an attack strategy that experts said could test the advanced U.S. THAAD anti-missile system which began to arrive in South Korea on Tuesday. Advances in North Korea’s banned missile programme have also caused concern in Tokyo, where sources with knowledge of the government’s thinking said a “swarm-like” attack using multiple missiles could overwhelm Japan’s already stretched defences. Images released by North Korean state media showed leader Kim Jong Un presiding over Monday’s simultaneous launch of four ballistic missiles, which landed in seas off Japan’s northwest. In response, the United States started the early deployment of its advanced Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile system in South Korea on Tuesday, despite angry opposition from China. THAAD’s job is to intercept and destroy a ballistic missile in its final phase of flight, either inside or just outside the earth’s atmosphere. But with its specifications secret and having never been used in wartime, THAAD’s ability to deal with a barrage of missiles at the same time is uncertain. “The use of multiple shots, timed ever-more-closely together, appears destined to rehearse saturating a defensive system by presenting it with an overwhelmingly complex radar picture,” Joshua Pollack, editor of the U.S.-based Nonproliferation Review, said of Monday’s launch. South Korean military and intelligence officials said the four North Korean missiles appeared to be an upgraded version of the Scud type - the
“ER” or “Extended Range” Scud. “An advantage of the ER Scud over the Rodong is that the ER Scud is much cheaper,” said Jeffrey Lewis of the California-based Middlebury Institute of International Studies. “So North Korea can presumably build more ER Scuds to overwhelm THAAD,” Lewis said. STRIKE CAPABILITY Most experts believe North Korea would likely need to fire off more than four ballistic missiles at one time to inundate a THAAD battery - perhaps 10, according to Michael Elleman, a U.S.-based rocket expert with the International Institute for Strategic Studies. “I would be disappointed to learn that four attacking missiles would overwhelm THAAD,” he said. Manufacturer Lockheed Martin declined to comment. “The specific number of threats (THAAD) can engage at once is classified, but we have successfully demonstrated the ability to engage multiple targets,” Pentagon spokesman Gary Ross said. A greater concern than multiple Scud-type missiles would be if North Korea proved the ability to fire simultaneous salvos of other types of missiles that could carry heavier payload, said one U.S. official, speaking on the condition of anonymity. North Korea theoretically had enough launchers to send at least 36 ballistic missiles of various types at the same time, said Joseph S. Bermudez, a strategic advisor at Allsource Analysis Inc and contributor to the 38 North Korea monitoring project. South Korea culls 50,000 farm birds as 2 new bird flu cases confirmed
SEOUL - South Korea has culled some 50,000 farm birds as two cases of bird flu were confirmed on Wednesday, bringing the country’s cull this winter to nearly 35 million - more than a fifth of all South Korean poultry - since a first bird flu case was found late last year. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said in a statement that a case of H5N6 avian influenza was discovered at a chicken farm north of Seoul, while another case of the H5N8 strain was found at a duck farm in the southwestern part of the country. The new cases represent a setback for Korea, fighting its worst-ever bird flu epidemic since mid-November last year. The spread of the virus had appeared to be waning since late January. Bird flu fears are spreading across the world. Most recently, the United States reported an outbreak, prompting Asian nations including South Korea to halt imports of U.S. poultry. Korea had not seen any new cases of bird flu for 15 days up to Feb. 22, when an outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N8
bird flu virus was confirmed at a duck farm. Since then a total of 13 cases have been reported, the ministry said. LIMITED IMPORTS

South Korea will ban imports of U.S. poultry and eggs after a strain of H7 bird flu virus was confirmed on Sunday at a chicken farm in Tennessee, South Korea’s agriculture ministry said. Japan and Taiwan will block poultry from the state, while Hong Kong will restrict imports from the Tennessee county where the infected flock was located,
said James Sumner, president of the USA Poultry & Egg Export Council, a trade group. The limits will reduce the potential for major U.S. chicken companies, such as Tyson Foods Inc and Pilgrim’s Pride , to sell poultry overseas. The Tennessee farm infected with avian flu was contracted to sell birds to Tyson. South Korea’s import ban took effect on Monday, the agriculture ministry said in a statement. Live poultry and eggs are subject to the ban, while heat-treated chicken meat and egg products can still be imported, the statement noted. South Korea, Asia’s fourthlargest economy, has been importing eggs from the United States as its worst-ever bird flu, or avian influenza (AI), outbreak has tightened the country’s egg supplies. BOSTON - Genetic changes in the cells lining the inside of the nose might someday help doctors diagnose lung cancer, a recent study suggests. “The idea that you don’t have to sample the disease tissue but can diagnose presence of disease using relatively accessible cells that are far from the tumor . . . is a paradigm that can impact many cancers,” Dr. Avrum Spira from Boston University School of Medicine, a member of the study team, told Reuters Health by email. The layer of cells that covers the surfaces of the body and lines the cavities is known as the epithelium. Researchers found that distinctive changes in gene activity in the nasal epithelium of lung cancer patients closely parallel the changes seen in lung epithelium and can distinguish between benign lung disease and cancer. “I think the most interesting finding was the genomic changes in the nasal epithelium of lung cancer patients mirror so closely those found in the lower airway,” Spira said. The researchers thought the nose would be “a reasonable surrogate for the ‘field of injury’ in the bronchial airway,” he added, but the
surprisingly strong concordance between the nose and lower airway gave them the encouragement to develop a nasal biomarker for lung cancer detection. “Pulmonary nodules represent a growing diagnostic dilemma in the U.S. as we have started to screen for lung cancer,” Spira said. “A nasal swab that is highly sensitive for lung cancer in this setting would enable physicians to avoid unnecessary invasive biopsies in nodule patients who are unlikely to have lung cancer.” Past research has found that gene expression profiles from normal bronchial epithelial cells can distinguish smokers and former smokers with lung cancer from individuals with benign lung disease, and that nasal and bronchial epithelium respond similarly to tobacco smoke. Spira’s team sought to determine whether cancer-associated gene expression in the nasal epithelium might be useful for detecting lung cancer in current and former smokers. They identified 535 genes that had different activity patterns in the nasal epithelium of patients with lung cancer versus those with
benign disease. Cancer-associated gene changes correlated significantly between nasal epithelium and bronchial epithelium samples, and the genes that were more active in nasal epithelium of patients with lung cancer were among the genes whose activity was most increased in bronchial epithelium of patients with cancer. When researchers compared models doctors might use to determine the likelihood of lung cancer, nasal gene activity was more accurate than clinical risk factors alone for diagnosing lung cancer, according to the Journal of the National Cancer Institute report. The combination of clinical factors and gene activity score accurately predicted cancer 91 percent of the time, compared to 79 percent for the model based on risk factors. The combined model also had 85 percent accuracy differentiating lung cancer from benign disease, compared to 73 percent. “One of the big-picture messages for physicians is that molecular tests like this one are emerging as part of precision medicine approaches for early cancer detection,” Spira said. SEMARAPURA — Besan village in Dawan is known as the best producer of palm sugar and is sold for more thatn other places with an average price of IDR 25,000 per kilogram. However, due to reducing number of the tappers, the production of palm sugar is now limited as many people have turned to the production of jackfruit toffee as the raw ingredients for this product can be easily obtained from people’s gardens. Nyoman Suela is a 50 year old palm sugar producer from Kawan hamlet, Besan said that he has been engaged in the jackfruit toffee making business for some time as the palm sugar has been getting harder to come by. Many residents of Besan village have stopped tapping sugar because it is considered to be quite a risky job. Nyoman Suela explained that formely nearly everyone in Besan produced plam sugar. Every family had at least one or two people who served as sugar tappers. However the profits gained from this activity are not always certain, so many people finally switched professions. “Many residents have found work outside the village. Now, there are only 50 palm sugar makers that are operating here”, he said when met on Monday (Mar. 6). Suela admitted that he makes more jackfruit toffee than palm sugar because of the lack of tappers. “Palm sugar can only be produced if we have the raw material. We can only produce about 5 kilograms of palm sugar now”
he said. His palm sugar is sold for IDR 25,000 per kilogram however this can go up to IDR 40,00 per kilo if it is made into rown sugar. However it is hard to market this product as most of the customers are hotels, whiel he mostly sells in traditinoal markets. Whereas Suela can only produce 400 pieces of jackfruit toffee a day right now. Production is down due to the limited availability of jackfruit. “Formerly, I could produce 1,200 pieces every day, but now this number has droped to only 400 pieces every day”, he said. A price hike in the cost of raw material has doubled, from IDR 12,000 to IDR 25,000. Nengah Yuliati should pay higher for the production cost, she would not increase the selling price of her toffee. She sells her jackfruit toffee product for IDR 1,000 per piece. According to the entrepreneur who has been involved in the business for four years, the jackfruit toffee production is meant to meet market demand of Balinese typical souvenir shops in Denpasar. Jackfruit toffee is processed traditionally by using firewood. In addition, the ingredient only consists of sugar and jackfruit without the addition of preservatives. Although created naturally, Nyoman Suela guaranteed that his jackfruit toffee can last longer up to three months. It is enabled by production process of drying until the moisture content is reduced drastically. (dwa)

Theese families were each given IDR 5 million as well as food provisions. Apart form Bali Post reader donations for those who directly suffered from the landslide ,donatinos were also distributed in order to help repair the compund wall of Hulundanu Batur Temple in Songan Village that was severly damaged by the recent natural disaster. Unresolved merchant relocation in Besakih
AMLAPURA - The area of Besakih Temple in Karangasem is now beeing managed by a management board. Spearheading this management, is Operations Management (OM) that has made some improvements including dealing with the issue of the merchant relocation. The merchants need to arrange themselves in a more orderly fashion so as not to disturb pilgrims. Headman of Besakih, Jero Mangku Widiartha, when met at Besakih not long ago said that the management board has been welcomed by the local community. One of the impacts that has been felt since the presence of the OM is the impression of extortion that has beena resolved with a single official levy. Each traveler is now charged at IDR 60,000 including guide service and other fees during their visit to Besakih. In addition, the environemnt around the temple has been organized and looks much cleaner. However, the merchant relocation issue remains unresolved. Jero Mangku Widiartha said the relocation plan has become a serious discussion between the apparatus of customary village and the operations management. According to him, the merchants need to be found a special location whose number can reach hundreds of people at the time of piodalan or grandiose ritual at Besakih. As planned, the location is centralized in the west of ??settlement. With such arrangement, the merchants will not line up at the roadside. Other than location to sell, the area is also equipped with parking lot. There are several fields that can be used to localize the merchants. “This is the first step, so that with this arrangement, the merchants will be no longer selling on the street,” said Widiartha. Moreover, if the government is willing to help acquire the private
land at the roadside, the issue on chaotic merchants at roadside can be resolved. However, he admitted the step is quite difficult because the land belongs to private property. Nevertheless, the merchant relocation is still trying to provide comfort for pilgrims and travelers that would like to have a closer look at the beauty and grandeur of Besakih Temple. In addition to arranging the merchant, the coaching for tour guide also becomes one of the focuses. Local tour guide should work professionally, so that it can provide correct explanation about Besakih and keep away from the character of extortion. Tour guide continues to receive coaching. With the presence of the OM, there is also a profit sharing as established through the MOU. As much as 25 percent will go to customary village, 50 percent goes to temple and another 25 percent go to local government. Widiartha said the profit sharing has been arranged in the MoU with the government of Karangasem. Operations Manager of Besakih Management Board, I Ketut Sumendra, said that since the management works, the arrangement has become a major focus. As a part of the arrangement, tour guides continue to get training in collaboration with relevant agencies in Bali. He emphasized that the management board of Besakih will continue to make improvement at Besakih and attempt to provide comfort and serenity for pilgrims and travelers. He agreed that merchant relocation issue should be resolved. However, it cannot be done spontaneously, but must be planned carefully. Such an effort will face many challenges and obstacles in the field, but if it can give clean and comfort impression, it will become one the options that has to be resolved. (kmb31)

Alec Baldwin says Trump impersonation revived his comedy career LOS ANGELES - Actor Alec Baldwin said that his impersonation of U.S. President Donald Trump on NBC’s sketch show “Saturday Night Live” has revived his “dead” comedy career after he wrapped up sitcom “30 Rock” in 2012. “I didn’t realize in the comedy terms that I was dead,” Baldwin told Reuters on Monday when asked if he felt he was entering a new era with his comedy. “Maybe I was in a coma ... now I’m waking up from a coma and now I’m ready to do some comedy.” The actor was promoting his latest film, DreamWorks’ animated comedy “The Boss Baby,” out in theaters on March 31, in which he voices a suit-wearing baby manager of a corporation for babies who is adopted by a family to undertake a covert mission. It has been nearly five years since Baldwin, 58, concluded his six-year tenure as the charming corporate boss Jack Donaghy in NBC’s quirky comedy series “30 Rock.” Since then, he has appeared in a handful of movies in supporting roles, but the actor saw a new surge in popularity when he took over as Trump on “Saturday Night Live” (SNL) last October, ahead of November’s U.S. presidential elections. Baldwin quipped that his comedy career “did die” but that “I’m being reincarnated. As Trump! Oh God!” Viewer ratings have soared for “Saturday Night Live” since Baldwin started portraying Trump in a series of skits mocking the billionaire reality TV star-turned-politician as a dim-witted commander-in-chief with a short attention span, an oversized-ego and a Twitter addiction. Trump criticized the NBC show in December, calling it “totally unwatchable” and a “hit-job.” Asked whether he felt playing the president took a toll on him, Baldwin said the challenge of the role was that it would “delight some people and offend other people.” “A large plurality of the country voted for Trump as president, and I think many of them are people that are not fond of the way Trump is treated, not just by ‘Saturday Night Live’ but the comedy cosmos in general,” he said. “I think for me playing Trump has been, it’s been a fun experience because it’s like going home when I do SNL.” (rtr)

their lives through business training and support groups, was an “eyeopening experience”. “It’s important that we draw some attention to the people who aren’t able to publicise the horrors that are occurring or have occurred in their own countries,” she wrote. “The women I met in Rwanda have inspired me in so many ways. MOGADISHU - Rich countries must do more to stop drought-stricken Somalia from sinking into famine, the head of the United Nations said on Tuesday, warning terrorism would increase without aid.
“If you want to fight terrorism, we need to address the root causes of terrorism. We need to bring peace and stability to a country like Somalia ... It’s the best way for rich countries to protect themselves,” U.N. chief Antonio Guterres told a news conference in Mogadishu. The United Nations is asking for
$825 million to provide aid to 6.2 million Somalis, about half the country’s population. “I am not appealing for the generosity of the rich, I am appealing for the enlightened selfinterest of the rich,” said Guterres. His appeal comes a day after U.S. President Donald Trump signed a revised executive order suspending travel to the United States from six mainly Muslim nations, including Somalia. Trump, who has justified that measure on national security grounds, has also said he will slash budgets for U.S. aid and diplomacy. Those policies will hit Somalia hard, after more than 25 years of civil
war and an ongoing battle between its U.N.-backed government and an Islamist insurgency. The current drought is threatening to turn into famine, with at least 360,000 Somali children severely malnourished, meaning they need extra food to survive. Continued to page 6
