BEVERLY HILLS — Sean Penn opened up about the immigration joke heard ‘round the world on Saturday in Beverly Hills during a promotional tour for his new film “The Gunman,” saying that he has “absolutely no apologies” for his comment. The actor-director also offered up choice words for those who didn’t recognize the irony in his remarks. On Feb. 22 at the 87th Academy Awards, Penn, tasked with presenting the best picture award, made waves when he opened the envelope and first asked “Who gave this son of a bitch his green card?” before announcing the winner as “Birdman.” Directed by the Mexican-born Alejandro Iñárritu, many wondered whether the joke was distasteful. The term “green card” refers to a document that confers permanent residency on immigrants in the United States. “I found it hilarious,” Iñárritu said after the ceremony. “Sean and I have that kind of brutal (relationship) where only true friendship can survive.” Iñárritu directed Penn in the 2003 film “21 Grams,” and the two remain close to this date. “I make on him a lot of very tough jokes that I will not tell you,” Iñárritu added. Cate Blanchett and husband adopt daughter

SYDNEY - Oscar-winning Australian actress Cate Blanchett and her husband have adopted a daughter, their fourth child, the couple’s management said Saturday. “The Upton family have adopted a baby girl,” a statement issued on behalf of the pair said. “Her name is Edith Vivian Patricia Upton.” The 45-year-old and her screenwriter husband Andrew Upton -- who recently announced they are moving to the United States -already have three sons: Ignatius, 6, Roman, 10, and Dashiell, 13. As photos emerged of Blanchett holding a baby on a Qantas flight to Sydney earlier this week, reports had circulated of a new addition to the family. The Australian Women’s Weekly magazine had said that Blanchett had been seen with a baby girl during the week at the school attended by her sons. “Cate has told friends at the local school that she and her husband, theatre producer Andrew Upton, are deliriously happy with the new addition to their family,” it reported. Blanchett started out as a theatre

To minimize HIV/AIDS in Buleleng, information given through bondres

SINGARAJA - The transmission of HIV/AIDS in Buleleng continues to increase every year, reaching alarming rates. The government of Buleleng government has turned to educating society through comedic performances of Bondres as well as con selling in elementary schools, in order to help suppress the transmission of HIV/AIDS in the area. Deputy Regent of Buleleng, Nyoman Sutjidra, revealed that the number of people living with HIV/AIDS in Buleleng is now estimated to be around 2,250 people with a majority of cases being new ones. Educational efforts are now targeting elementary school

children in order to help curb this tendency in the future. “We continue to raise public awareness, including through the dissemination of drug prevention information. If possible, no more people from Buleleng will become infected with HIV/AIDS. Thanks in part to the

overwhelmed by ogoh-ogoh orders

AMLAPURA - Artists and makers of ogoh-ogoh (papier mâché demons) in Karangasem are overwhelmed by orders for ogoh-ogoh or their masks. One of the ogoh-ogoh makers in Bebandem, Karangasem, Ida Ketut Santosa, said on Friday (Mar. 6), confirmed that he was inundated with orders. For the last few days, he has had to decline any new orders for ogoh-ogoh or its masks. “Pengerupukan Nyepi is around the corner with just 13 days to go until Friday March 20. If anyone comes and places an order, we have to reject it. We worry that we will not be able to complete it in time” he said at his workplace in Bebandem. This mustached-man said that he and his colleagues currently have orders for 12 ogoh-ogoh and 40 masks. To help complete these orders he has employed dozens of workers. Orders, received last month, have come from every sub-district of Karangasem, for either ogoh-ogoh or masks. Santosa said that before the Nyepi of Caka New Year 1937, he was struck with good luck, with orders flooding in to such a point that he has had to reject new orders, lest he be completely overwhelmed and disappoint his customers. “We do not accept the orders of ogoh-ogoh or mask from outside Karangasem because local orders are already overwhelming us” he said. Despite earning a reasonable income, the works are nonetheless quite difficult to produce and take a long time. Since these are after all works of

art, they also require the right mood or inspiration. “We are only able to create three masks a day, while also working on the design of the ogoh-ogoh” he said. A single ogoh-ogoh takes three to four days to make. The price of the ogoh-ogoh or mask highly depends on its size. A 3 meter high ogoh-ogoh is usually sold for IDR 4 million. “The larger the piece, the more expensive it is”

he said. Meanwhile, the mask for a 3 meter high ogoh-ogoh is sold for about IDR 300,000 while that of 4 meters costs about IDR 400,000. Ida Ketut Santosa appears to be the only artist or ogoh-ogoh and mask maker in Karangasem. Many young children at a number of hamlets in Karangasem who are making ogohogoh to be paraded on Pengrupukan or

Tawur Kesanga, Friday evening March 20, are still working on the woven wire or bamboo body structures, or are only about 60 to 70 percent completed. The face or mask is usually ordered from a mask maker. Masks are often made from Styrofoam or cork. Children cover the cost of making ogoh-ogoh by collecting donations from house to house or by asking community leaders or entrepreneurs.

Political figures are also commonly targeted for donations to finance the ogoh-ogoh making. A legislator of Karangasem, requesting anonymity admitted to have been repeatedly visited by youth asking for donations saying that it was for the creation of ogoh-ogoh. Chef Sonny, as he is familiarly called, has roamed around countries such as America, Singapore and Australia. In his voyages he gained a lot of knowledge and cooking secrets. He is now working in Bali, at the Ibis Style Legian Kuta. Not satisfied with his myriad experiences traveling, this graduate of the PPLP Dyana Pura is still challenging himself to constantly learn and be creative in his work. “Being a chef I was not my intention. However, due to curiosity, I felt the need to challenge myself so eventually I attended tourism school. There I finally fell in love with the culinary world,” he recalled. When working overseas, this chef who likes playing music had a memorable experience. At that time, Chef Sonny worked at the Country Club, Florida. Every month, the restaurant held an ‘Indonesian Night’. On one such occasion, Chef Sonny prepared Indonesian Soto (clear soup). The customers who came to the event really enjoyed the Indonesian dish. “At that moment, I realized that Indonesian cuisine is not inferior to foreign cuisine. In fact, many people outside of Indonesia really like it,” he said.

After that, when Chef Sonny returned to Indonesia and built up his career in Bali, he began to develop his capacity to mix local cuisines with foreign cuisines. According to him, Bali has unique spices and traditional recipes. “I have to learn more because Bali has many traditional dishes, especially in the villages,” he said enthusiastically. This year, Chef Sonny presented the Best Seller Dish known as Bali Tuna Pizza, which is included in the a la carte menu .This kind of pizza is one of the results of the combination of Balinese and European dishes. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Sure, Los Angeles is known for classic Hollywood, but these days the city is getting attention for other attractions too. Later this year, the Italian American Museum of Los Angeles is expected to open. Pockets of LA like downtown and Chinatown have undergone a resurgence. Yudhoyono urges support for government to fight drugs, corruption

DENPASAR - Former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) has called on the public to support the Joko Widodo administration in its fight against illicit drugs, corruption and terrorism.

“Lets support the eradication of illicit drugs, corruption and terrorism in this country under the leadership of President Joko Widodo,” he said on Sunday. The government needs the people’s support in its efforts to create good governance, SBY, currently the chairman of the Democratic Party (PD), stated. The public, however, also must participate in overseeing the governance, he added. SBY accompanied by his wife, Ani Yudhoyono, his son, Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono, and his brother in-law, Pramono Edhie Wibowo, joined the public during a car-free day event which allows the public to do sport activities such as exercise, jogging, bicycling, and skateboarding in certain main streets in Denpasar. GIANYAR - Hundreds of animal collections at the Bali Zoo in Singapadu, Gianyar District, Bali, were purified during a Hindunese ritual called “Tumpek Kandang”. “This ritual is held to honor god, the creator and preserver of the animals, and is aimed at praying for the safety of all animals, that they will be given good health and will be rendered free from disease,” Public Relation Executive of Bali Zoo Emma Kristiana Chandra said on Saturday. Symbolically, several animals are taken out from their cages, such as elephant, siamang (blackfurred gibbon), the javanese owa (silvery gibbon), sun bear, and binturong or bearcat to undergo the ritual. The ritual is held every six months at the nearby pura or shrine headed by a Hindu religious leader. With some offerings, the priest prays to god asking for the safety of all animals. All staff members of the Bali Zoo also participate in the ritual. “This sacred day’s celebration is related to the Tri Hita Karana concept,” Chandra said. Tri Hita Karana is based the Balinese people’s philosophy, which

BANGLI - Bangli County is not only famous for its bamboo handicrafts. Recently, the potential of pandanus craft has also been growing. One such example is found at Tanggahan Talangjiwa hamlet, Demulih village, Susut subdistrict. The high rate of poor households has meant that hundreds of people have turned to the making of pandanus mats to earn some money. Local hamlet chief, I Nengah Berana, explained on Friday (Mar. 6) that of there are 227 families pursuing the making of pandanus mats on a small scale by poor households. He added that the high potential of pandanus to be transformed into economically valuable goods, has made many people turn to this finer as a means to alleviate poverty. “This business is provides an important contribution to residents of Demulih, especially those

who are economically disadvantaged” he said. Berana added that the marketing of these mats was quite good. Aside from residents of Bangli, pandanus mats are also sought after by people from outside the county, including Gianyar. On the other hand, apart from a high public interest in this craft, said Berana, so far the crafters have not received protection, so that there is still great disparity be-

tween the prices of different mat makers. “The price offered by each different producers is quite different” he said. Meanwhile, one pandanus mat maker, Ni Nengah Genah, said the she has been working this craft since childhood, and it has helped her to meet her daily needs. SINGARAJA - The tourism sector of Buleleng County continues to grow, with discussions about how to develop Pemuteran village area in Gerokgak subdistrict as a tourism icon, being put on the table by tropism stakeholders. Domestic and foreign tourist visit to Pemuteran village are still limited to the enjoyment of the the fascination of underwater activities such as snorkeling and diving. Pemuteran village itself however still faces some obstacles in becoming a destination in and of itself, as it requires some rejuvenation. “It is a moment of opportunity for Buleleng to prepare itself by making a grand design for a holistic and culture-based tourism sector based on Tri Hita Karana” said Assistant to Dean III of the School of Economics of Undiksha Singaraja, I Putu Gede Parma. Communication and co-operation have been carried out by the Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency together with academics, the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Buleleng Chapter, hospitality practitioners as well as community leaders. Parma explained that the concept of tourism development in the area of the BTDC Nusa Dua would mimicked for the the tourist area of Pemuteran village. This includes the installation of proper drainage channels, pedestrian areas, a reliable water supply, and the well thought out layout of hotels and transportation. “We’re drafting a proposal of a grand design for the Pemuteran area to be developed into a well-prepared tourist destination as applied at the BTDC Nusa Dua tourist resort with a wellplanned development” he explained. Other important aspects being considered include, the four basic requirements for tourist destination development, namely performances, accessibility of transport infrastructure, representative accommodation services and the back up of government policy. Communication with relevant ministries is being initiated. Physical aspects included the construction of sidewalks on national roads as well as large-sized capital letters that read Pemuteran Village such as those found in Hollywood in the United States that will be embellished with ornamental plants. There are also plans to create proper signage indicating where things are located such as hotels and restaurants in Pemuteran village. “Indeed it has become the tourism development strategy in Buleleng. However, the arrangement will be done per area from the west” said Parma. Meanwhile, the Head of Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency, Gede Suyasa, asserted that the tourism development of Pemuteran village aims at pedestrian tourism with plans for walkways along the public roads being included in the plan. “Following up on the preparation of the master plan for the Pemuteran tourism area, we expect to submit a proposal to the Ministry of Tourism this month. The proposal will also include the culinary area, open stage and preparations for special transportation lines including pedestrian and tourism roads, public roads and also the arrangement of the entrance gates to Pemuteran village” he said. traction, said the that irregular installation of the power cable has greatly reduced the beauty of tourist attraction which had previously often been used as an object of photography. “Now, there are few photo shoots here, because the cables disturb the scenery” he explained.

Furthermore, he said that people had high interest in making the attraction as an object of photography so that it was deemed necessary to arrange the power cable. He said that although there a lot of interest by people to use the area as a backdrop for photography, the cable lines make them shy away.

He added that the cables could be buried behind the residential area, but this would require the attention of the government. Similar opinions were also expressed by chief of Pengelipuran customary village, I Wayan Supat. He said that as a traditional village and tourist attraction, the existence

of irregular power cables was indeed problematic. He agreed with Moneng, that the existence of power cable was very disturbing the atmosphere of the tourist attraction. Supat hopes that the cable issue could be addressed by burying them underground (to the west). (sos)

Four bombs in Nigeria’s Maiduguri city kill at least 50

MAIDUGURI - Four bomb blasts killed at least 50 people in Maiduguri in Nigeria’s northeast on Saturday in the worst attacks there since Islamist militants tried to seize the city in two major assaults earlier this year. There was no immediate claim for the bombings but they bore the hallmarks of the Islamist group Boko Haram, which has been waging a six-year insurgency to carve out an Islamic state in Africa’s biggest economy. President Goodluck Jonathan, who is seeking re-election on March 28, has been heavily criticised for failing to crush the group. The vote was postponed for six weeks from Feb. 14 for security reasons. Around noon on Saturday, the driver of a motorised tricycle detonated a bomb when the vehicle was prevented from entering a fish market on the Baga road in the west of Maiduguri, market trader Mohammad Ajia said after fleeing the scene. Another blast hit the busy Monday market shortly afterwards. A car bomb exploded later by a bus station near a Department of State Security (DSS) office, according to a civilian member of a joint task force. State police commissioner Clement Adoda said via text message there had been four blasts in the city, without elaborating on the location or nature of the fourth explosion. “We’ve received 50 dead bodies from the blast scenes and 36 injured people,” Salisu Kwaya Bura, Chief Medical Officer of

Borno Specialists Hospital, told reporters. The number of wounded was well above 36 as more had been taken to two other hospitals, a hospital source said. “Men from the anti-bomb squad came a few minutes after the blast to comb the scene ... I saw five mangled bodies being put in vehicles,” Aliyu Musa, a resident near the DSS office, said. Maiduguri is the capital of Borno state and birthplace of Boko Haram, which has long coveted the city as a capital for the state it wants to create. The militants tried to seize Maiduguri at the end of January and again in early February. Boko Haram overran a territory the size of Belgium last year, which Nigeria’s ill-equipped army has struggled to take back, and the group gained worldwide notoriety in April when its members kidnapped more than 200 schoolgirls. Since the election delay, Chadian troops cooperating with the Nigerians have reclaimed some important towns in Borno. The army has also been able to push the militants out of some territories in neighbouring Adamawa and Yobe states. On Saturday, Nigeria’s army said it had retaken two more constituencies in Borno state. “With the capture of Mafa, Marte LGAs (local government areas), and the Chadian troops holding fort in Dikwa, the international route from Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Central African Republic is now fully secured,” Colonel Sani Usman said in a statement. SELMA, Alabama — America’s racial history “still casts its long shadow upon us,” President Barack Obama said as he stood near the Edmund Pettus Bridge in solidarity and remembrance with civil rights activists whose beatings by police a half-century ago galvanized much of the nation against racial oppression and hastened passage of historic legislation guaranteeing voting rights for minorities. Tens of thousands of people on Saturday joined to commemorate the “Bloody Sunday” march of 1965 and take stock of the struggle for equality. Under a bright sun, the first black U.S. president praised the figures of a civil rights era that he was too young to know but that helped him break the ultimate racial barrier in political history with his ascension to the nation’s highest office. He called them “warriors of justice” who pushed America closer to a more perfect union. “So much of our turbulent history — the stain of slavery and anguish of civil war, the yoke of segregation and tyranny of Jim Crow, the death of four little girls in Birmingham, and the dream of a Baptist preacher — met on this bridge,” Obama told the crowd before taking a symbolic walk across part of the Edmund Pettus Bridge, where the 1965 marchers were attacked by police. “It was not a clash of armies, but a clash of wills, a contest to determine the meaning of America,”

Obama said. He was 3 years old at the time of the march. A veteran of that clash, U.S. Rep. John Lewis, who was severely beaten by police that day in 1965 and suffered a skull fracture, exhorted the crowd to press on with the work of racial justice. “Get out there and push and pull until we redeem the soul of America,” Lewis said. China’s February imports sink in news sign of weakness

BEIJING — China’s imports shrank in February for a second month in a new sign of weakness in the world’s second-largest economy. Imports contracted by 20.5 percent to $108.6 billion compared with a year earlier, customs data showed Sunday. China’s trade data early in the year often can be distorted by the Lunar New Year holiday, which occurs at a different time each year in January or February. However, with the two months combined, the contraction in imports so far this year is 20.2 percent. Exports surged 48.3 percent to $169.2 billion, rebounding from

January’s 3.3 percent contraction, according to the General Administration of Customs of China. China’s appetite for imported raw materials and consumer goods has ebbed as economic growth declined to a two-decade low of 7.4 percent last year. The International Monetary Fund and other forecasters expect growth to decline this year to 7 percent and further in 2015. The ruling Communist Party is trying to steer the economy away from heavy reliance on trade and investment by nurturing more selfsustaining growth driven by domes-

tic consumption. Still, its plans call for maintaining steady trade growth to protect the millions of jobs supported by export industries. On Saturday, Trade Minister Gao Hucheng said February exports would be weak but he expressed confidence the country can meet the government’s goal of 6 percent growth this year in total imports and exports. The country’s global trade surplus widened to $60.6 billion. The surplus with the United States was $19.9 billion and that with the 27nation European Union was $15 billion. (ap)

BERLIN - Whether it’s the soaring Swiss franc, the plummeting ruble or the sliding euro, recent currency chaos has thrown the travel sector into turmoil as holiday-makers dodge costly tourist traps and hunt for bargains. “In principle currencies always have an impact on travel and tourism,” said Taleb Rifai, head of the UN World Tourism Organization, at the Berlin tourism fair (ITB) this past week. The rule is simple, he said: “A weaker currency attracts people to your country and prevents you from travelling. “A stronger currency encourages you to travel,” Rafai added, and makes vacationing at home costlier in relative terms. When the Swiss franc suddenly soared against the euro after the Swiss National Bank abandoned attempts to hold down the currency in January, leisure and travel provider Pierre & Vacances-Center Parcs Group soon found that Swiss customers hunted euro-priced holidays in France and Germany. “Naturally we had to react,” said Joachim Quadt, sales director for Germany and Switzerland. In February the company offered discounts to tour operators for Swiss sites, in Swiss francs. Switzerland Tourism is also seeking to convince the Swiss to spend their holidays in their own country. Russia’s recent standoff with the West over Ukraine, and the punishing impact of sanctions and falling oil prices, have also made for some cheap holidays for those undeterred by the geopolitical tensions. For only about 90 euros or $100, visitors can buy a three-night package in a four-star Moscow hotel, with breakfast, a city bus tour and museum admissions thrown in. Kalibukbuk Ciwa Buddha Temple

SINGARAJA - Nowadays Kalibukbuk is recognized as the centre of Lovina tourist resort in the North of Bali. Lovina as a tourist resort officially is named Kalibukbuk Tourist Resort (Kawasan Wisata Kalibukbuk) despite infact it encompasses the villages of Pemaron, Tukadmungga, Anturan, Kalibukbuk, Kaliasem and Temukus. The village of Kalibukbuk was a small fishing village but due to the development of tourism in the Northern Bali, it has been transformed into a small town and then recognized as the centre of Lovina tourist resort. Kalibukbuk as part of Lovina is famous for its beach, calm sea which is very suitable for snorkeling and the existent of dolphins in their natural habitat. A Dolphin Statue stands close to the beach. On top of a column which sustains the statue of a crowned dolphin symbolizing the

attraction of dolphin and the crown is as honor of Anak Agung Panji Tisna officially recognized by the Governor of Bali as a pioneer of tourism development in Northern Bali. What may be interesting to note regarding the development of tourism in the North of Bali is that after the first accommodation built by late Anak Agung Panji Tisna, then it was followed by his kin such as late Anak Agung Ngurah Ganteng, late Anak Agung Jelantik, Anak Agung Ngurah Sentanu, just to name a few. At the moment only Anak Agung Ngurah Sentanu is known still active on tourism business with his son and daughter by running a hotel named “Permata Hotel” which later changed its name into “The Lovina Beach Hotel”. In addition to the centre of Lovina, Kalibukbuk is also known as the gate of Ciwa Buddha tenets spreading into Bali, which has been

proven by the discovery of several Buddhist relics in the form of stupika (Buddhist paraphernalia made of clay) in the Village of Kalibukbuk and its surrounding. In 1991 during the construction of a swimming pool in the premises of Hotel Angsoka, in the village of Kalibukbuk, there were discovered many relics of stupika and a skeleton of complete human body along with a sword which believed of having a great value of Indonesia archeology and history. In 1994, in the palm grove of Anak Agung Ngurah Sentanu located also in the village of Kalibukbuk, piles of broken large sized bricks known as Majapahit bricks were discovered during the digging of a well in the depth of 2 meters. This discovery then was reported to the government archeology board in Denpasar. The board then excavated the items discovered to be analyzed and investigated and it took several years to complete.

Later on the restoration was conducted and on 16 January 2019 after 15 years of restoration was completed. On 17 January 2009, one day after the completion of the restoration, an auspices day in Balinese belief, called “Tumpek Landep”, a ritual was conducted to inaugurate the restored structure in the form of eight angles foundation. On 24 May 2009, it was officially inaugurated by the Director General of History and Archeology of the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia. Then it is named the Kalibukbuk Ciwa Buddha Temple. 2 teens stopped at Sydney Airport from joining Islamic State CANBERRA — Two Australian brothers aged 16 and 17 were stopped at Sydney Airport on suspicion that they were young jihadis headed to join the Islamic State group, officials said Sunday. Nepal airport reopens after runway cleared KATHMANDU, Nepal — Nepal’s only international airport reopened four days after a Turkish Airlines jet skidded and blocked the single runway, the aviation authority said Sunday. The first planes took off just before midnight as thousands of stranded passengers crowded the airport in hopes of getting on a flight. The Turkish Airbus 330, whose front landing gear was broken, was removed from the grass with a flat-bed truck and towed to a

parking area. No one was injured when the plane skidded off the wet surface on Wednesday. Airlines have said they would bring in extra flights and the airport would be open 24 hours to accommodate the departures. Nepal’s government said it will wave visa fees for the stranded passengers. President stands firm on looming executions

JAKARTA - Indonesian President Joko Widodo has defended his decision to reject clemency for foreigners on death row for drug smuggling, but said he does not rule out abolishing capital punishment in the future. Indonesian authorities this week moved the two Australian ringleaders of the so-called “Bali Nine” drug trafficking gang from Bali to the prison island of Nusakambangan, indicating they would soon be executed. They are among a group of drug convicts, including foreigners from France, Brazil, the Philippines, Nigeria and Ghana, who are expected to be executed at the same time on the island. In an interview to Al Jazeera, Widodo defended his decision to not halt the planned executions, which have sparked diplomatic tensions with Canberra. “About 4.5 million people need to

be rehabilitated because of the drugs. Please do not only see the traffickers but also the impact of the drugs trafficking,” he said. “Please do visit the (drugs) rehabilitation centre when they are screaming due to the drugs addiction. People must see this from both side, not only from one side,” he added. But Widodo said that the government would be open to abolishing the death penalty if the Indonesian people wanted change. “The Constitution and existing laws still allow (the death penalty) but in the future if it is necessary to change it and the people really want it, why

BANDUNG - Agrarian and Spatial Planning Minister Ferry Musyidan Baldan said he would carry out examinations and collect data on spaces of land owned by foreigners in Indonesia. “Foreigners may not own any single space of land in Indonesia based on the Constitution,” Ferry Mursyidan Baldan said after attending the relaunch of a magazine on the spatial planning in Indonesia on Sunday. He said the examinations would be conducted to assure that there would be no pieces of land under the control of foreign-

ers in the country. “Based on the international law, only land for residences and offices of foreign ambassadors could be controlled by foreigners,” he remarked. He said that so far many pieces of land, particularly in the tourist destination areas such as in Bali and Lombok, were owned by foreign nationals. Asked on sanctions that might be given to foreigners owning land in Indonesia, the minister said that there were no sanctions but his ministry would impose a firm regulation. “We do not need to take sanctions

against them but the ownership would be diverted. We shall ask them if they have wives (Indonesian wives), the ownership will be diverted to their wives, if not, it will be taken over by the state,” he said. Wife of Frenchman on Indonesia death row clings to hope CILACAP - The wife of a Frenchman on death row in Indonesia says she refuses to believe she has seen him for the last time, as fears grow he will soon be executed with a group of foreigners. Serge Atlaoui has been detained on Indonesia’s notorious Nusakambangan prison island in Central Java since he was sentenced to death in 2007 on drugs charges. The Frenchman, 51, had his appeal for clemency rejected in January by Indonesian President Joko Widodo, a vocal supporter of capital punishment for drug offenders. Atlaoui was joined this week on the island by two Australian drug traffickers Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, whose transfer from Bali signals their execution date, and that of several other foreigners, is drawing near. The other foreigners are drug convicts from Brazil, the Philippines, Ghana and Nigeria. They all recently lost their requests for presidential clemency and are expected to be put to death at the same time soon. Atlaoui’s wife Sabine visited him in prison this week and refused to believe it will be her last, as she pins all her hope on a legal challenge for a stay of execution. “Yes, of course we are worried,” she told AFP in Cilacap, the port town where family must wait before visiting Nusakambangan. “But we’ve got this judicial review that has been lodged, and we do hope that through this process, the truth can be revealed.” Atlaoui, a father of four, was arrested near Jakarta in 2005 in a secret laboratory producing ecstasy. Imprisoned in Indonesia for ten years, he has always denied the charges saying he was installing industrial machinery in what he thought was an acrylics factory. Atlaoui had never lodged a judicial review of his sentence until this year, when the sudden execution in January of six prisoners -- including five foreigners -- prompted the family to begin urgent legal action. Sabine Atlaoui said her husband’s case was different from Chan and Sukumaran, as he was applying for his first judicial review. The Australians’ application for a review last month, a second attempt by the pair, was rejected. They also lost a subsequent challenge to the president’s rejection of their appeals for clemency, a decision they are now appealing in court. But Indonesia’s attorney-general has stressed that the failed attempts at presidential pardons were the last chance to avoid execution. Unlike the families of the Australian prisoners, Sabine Atlaoui has made the journey countless times and understands their anxiety as speculation mounts about the fate of their loved ones. “As families, we are all enduring a very traumatic situation. Here we are, with our emotions, our pain and our fear,” she said. Her husband is detained at a separate maximum security prison to the Australians, who are being held in solitary confinement elsewhere on “Indonesia’s Alcatraz”. The execution of a Dutch and a Brazilian prisoner in January prompted those governments to recall their ambassadors in fury, but Widodo has vowed to maintain a tough line on drug smugglers. Sabine Atlaoui said her husband was fully aware of the political situation, adding the executions this year had stoked fears inside the prison as inmates were led away to be shot. But when the family was reunited this week -- including three of Atlaoui’s four children and two siblings who had never before visited him in prison -- she said everyone put those thoughts aside momentarily. “The atmosphere was really intense, there was laughter, feelings were so strong we could forget everything that was around us,” she said. “Suddenly when we went through the exit... we came back to the reality of the prison world.
