Woman killed as Bruce Jenner crashes car in US paparazzi chase
LOS ANGELES - Olympic decathlon star and former stepfather to the Kardashian clan Bruce Jenner was involved in a car crash Saturday that killed one and injured several others, though he was unharmed, TMZ reported. The deadly accident took place on the Pacific Coast Highway in the Los Angeles metro area while Jenner was being chased by paparazzi, according to the gossip news website. The 65-year-old has Americans’ rapt attention amid talk that he is soon to come out as transgender. Jenner was driving a large SUV and was being trailed by at least five paparazzi when he collided with a white car that then swerved into oncoming traffic, TMZ reported. The
driver of the white car died. Citing unnamed law enforcement sources, TMZ said four vehicles were involved in the crash and that eight people were injured. Jenner was pictured at the scene standing upright with no obvious injuries and was driven away in a police cruiser following the accident. NEW YORK — Brad Pitt will star in a romantic thriller to be directed by Robert Zemeckis for Paramount Pictures. The studio announced the untitled film on Friday, revealing scant details of the plot but calling it a “sweeping” epic. The screenplay is by Steven Knight, who
penned “Eastern Promises” and recently directed the acclaimed indie “Locke.” The film marks a continued run of live-action dramas for Zemeckis, the director of “Forrest Gump,” the “Back to the Future” films and “Cast Away.” After a series of animated movies last
decade, Zemeckis made 2012’s “Flight” with Denzel Washington and is currently in post-production on “The Walk,” about high-wire artist Philippe Petit. Pitt recently finished shooting “By the Sea” with his wife Angelina Jolie, who also directed the marital drama. (ap)
‘Birdman’ filmmaker wins top prize at Directors Guild Awards
LOS ANGELES - After taking top honors from the acting and producing guilds, the film about a washed-up Hollywood actor played by Michael Keaton won the top prize at the Directors Guild Awards. “Birdman” writer-director Alejandro Inarritu was honored at Saturday’s ceremony with the prize for outstanding directional achievement for a feature film, giving Inarritu and possibly “Birdman” an edge ahead of the Academy Awards. “If this is considered a great film, it has nothing to do with me,” said Inarritu speaking about the difficulties of making movies as he accepted his award. “It is a miracle.” The guild dispenses awards to directors in TV and movie categories in what’s customarily a final calling for the film that goes on to win the best director trophy and possibly best picture at the Oscars. Inarritu flew past Richard Linklater (“Boyhood”), Wes Anderson (“The Grand Budapest Hotel”), Morten Tyldum (“The Imitation Game”) and Clint Eastwood (“American Sniper”) to win the film directing trophy. They’ll face off again Feb. 22 for the best director Oscar, except for Eastwood who was not nominated. Instead, “Foxcatcher” filmmaker Bennett Miller is up for that honor at the Academy Awards. DENPASAR – The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali noted that Bali’s economy grew 6.72 percent in 2014. This figure is a slight increase from the figures of 2013 that showed a 6.69 percent economic growth. The inflation rate reached 8.43 percent at the end of last year, and the delayed absorption of the local government budget was alleged to have contributed to the slowdown in the economic growth of the Island of the Gods. “In the fields of business, the service sector and social activities there was a 12.43 percent increase. While administration increased 10.75 percent and education service, 10.58 percent. Public expenditure for official travel in November caused a decrease in the absorption of both the national and regional budgets from IDR 5.2 trillion in 2013 to IDR 4.53 trillion in 2014.

of 2014 reached 6.72 percent but did not occur in all sectors. Government expenditure and changes in inventory were reflected in this decline. The 7.36 contraction of government consumption expenditure has been a hallmark over the past five years, and is likely a result of the new policy issued by the government that prohibits meetings from taking place in hotels. “At the same time this contraction also caused a decline in the National and Provincial budgetary absorption from IDR 5.20 trillion in 2013 to IDR 4.53 trillion in 2014”, he concluded. Australian religious leaders’ plea for death row pair
SYDNEY/DENPASAR - Senior religious leaders in Australia Sunday called on Indonesia to show mercy to two men on death row in Bali, as Indonesia’s top diplomat in the country said their executions would go ahead. Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran were arrested in 2005 on the holiday island of Bali and sentenced to death the following year for attempting to smuggle heroin out of Indonesia. The pair, members of an Australian drug-smuggling gang dubbed the “Bali Nine”, recently lost their final appeals for clemency despite arguing that they had rehabilitated themselves in prison. Indonesian authorities are pushing ahead with the planned executions, which are expected to be carried out this month. Sydney’s Catholic Archbishop Anthony Fisher and Grand Mufti Ibrahim Abu Mohammad called on Indonesian President Joko Widodo to save the men, who are both in their early 30s. “Our request today is for clemency or a commuted sentence for Andrew and Myuran so as to allow them to be further rehabilitated,” the religious leaders said in a joint statement. “To execute would prematurely end these lives, robbing both of
them and our communities of the opportunity for ongoing repentance and rehabilitation.” But Indonesia’s ambassador to Australia Nadjib Riphat Kesoema told reporters in Canberra the duo’s legal appeals had already reached the “highest level”. “I think all the efforts, all the legal efforts have reached the highest level now and Indonesia has notified the government of Australia that we will execute,” The Australian reported him as saying Sunday. “The relations of Indonesia and Australia are very strong and we believe this kind of happening will not bother the strong relations between the two countries.” Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said Friday her government would continue to plead for the lives of the two men and vowed not to give up hope that their executions could be stayed. Jakarta last month executed six drug offenders, including five foreigners, with Widodo a vocal supporter of capital punishment for drug offenders.

The mother and sister of Myuran Sukumaran, an Australian drug convict on death row, left in tears after visiting him at Krobokan Prison in Denpasar. “Please don’t kill my son,” Raji Sukumaran, the mother, told a group of journalists before getting into a car. She visited the prison with her daughter Brintha Sukumaran two days after the Bali District Court rejected Myuran’s request for a review of his case. According to the Denpasar District Court’s spokesman, Hasoloan Sian-
turi, the requests of Myuran (33) and Andrew Chan (31), another Australian convict on death row, could not be sent to the Supreme Court as they did not meet all formal requirements. The two were arrested along with seven other Australians in 2005, when they were attempting to smuggle 8.3 kilograms of heroin from Bali to Sydney, Australia. Earlier, Sukumaran’s clemency petition was rejected by President Joko Widodo. Indonesia had recently executed five drug convicts as part of its serious efforts to combat drug trafficking in
the country. The five convicts were Namaona Denis of Malawi, Marco Archer Cardoso Moreira of Brazil, Daniel Enemuo alias Diarrassouba Mamadou of Nigeria, Ang Kiem Soei, alias Kim Ho, alias Ance Tahir, of the Netherlands, Rani Andriani, alias Melisa Aprilia, of Indonesia, and Tran Thi Bich Hanh of Vietnam. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Spotlight on historic New York theater in Pacino film
NEW YORK — A new movie starring Al Pacino as an aging actor was partly shot at a grand old theater on New York City’s Staten Island with an interesting history.
Pacino performs several scenes in “The Humbling” on the stage of the St. George Theatre, which is located about a half-mile (about 800 meters) from where Staten Island’s famous ferries cruise past the Statue of Liberty to Lower Manhattan. In one scene shot at the St. George, Pacino throws himself off the stage into the audience; in another, he has a confrontation with an old friend, Dianne Wiest, in the orchestra. The theater has been used as a film set in other movies such as “The School of Rock” and for TV shows including “Gossip Girl,” ‘’Gotham” and “Smash.” “Film crews like our location since it is under the radar but yet still in New York City,” said Wayne Miller, the theater’s executive director. “Certainly, an actor of Al Pacino’s renown could not film an outdoor scene near a public street without a mob, and yet he filmed a scene in our stage door alley with no gathering of paparazzi.” Chellsey Cruz, a spokeswoman for the movie, said the St. George was chosen because “it’s grand enough to feel like Broadway” without the difficulty and expense of shooting on Broadway. Indonesia seeking self-sufficiency in beef production
MANGUPURA - Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman is working to make Indonesia self-sufficient in beef production by intensifying the development of cow breeding centers in three eastern Indonesian provinces. “I have a dream of making the provinces of Bali, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) and West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) beef suppliers for the Asian region,” the minister said when conducting a working visit to Cemagi village, Mengwi subdistrict, Badung District, Bali, on Friday.

He also lauded Badung district head Anak Agung Gde Agung for his breakthroughs in the agriculture sector despite increasing changes in land uses. Now Spanish companies are working to strengthen Spain’s image as a shopping hub, not just a seaside destination where most visitors come in summer. The UNWTO ranks Spain as the world’s third most popular tourist destination after France and the United States, and the second-biggest in terms of revenues. But it struggles to compete with them for shopping. “A tourist here spends 400 euros ($452) on average” in the shops, said Luciano Ochoa, head of Innov Taxfree, a company that offers duty-free shopping to non-EU residents visiting Spain. Of these visitors, Chinese visitors spend as much as 900 euros each in Spain, he said. But in Paris, the average Chinese tourist spends 1,500 euros on a visit. It is in no way certain that foreign educational institutions would uphold and accommodate the values of local wisdom and Balinese culture. Likely they would emphasise the culture of their own country. “So far, we have easily accept foreign culture without prior selection due to the lack of education regarding our local wisdom teachings. Nonetheless, our own schools can more strongly highlight local wisdom which could actually be a selling point for attracting foreign students to come study in Bali, in order to learn about Balinese culture and values such as the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana”, he concluded. We are still waiting for proposals from district administrations so that we can start developing villages for the program,” Chief of the Tourism Service of Bali Province Anak Agung Gde Yuniartha Putra said. The Bali administration will develop human resources and infrastructure facilities in tourism villages and will ensure the security and comfort of tourists. Yuniartha noted that village administrations must be able to offer tourists several attractions. “Every tourism village should offer attractions that are unique to it. For example, if a village has hills, then they can offer hiking activity. Likewise, if a village has plantation fields, the administration can offer paddy or coffee planting activities,” the Chief explained. He expressed hope that tourists will help local economies by spending their mooney on these activities that will be offered at affordable prices. The Chief observed that the tourism village concept has great potential and is suitable for Bali that has several cultural tourism sites with specific characteristics. “There are several places in Gianyar district that can be developed into tourism villages; for instance, Batubulan village that specializes in stone carving or Mas village, which does wood carving, and Ubud village that is popular for its paintings,” Yuniartha pointed out. DOUGLASVILLE, Georgia — Neighbors along a quiet, suburban street outside Atlanta were left horrified after police say a man shot six people, killing four of them, including his ex-wife and several children before ending the rampage by turning the gun on himself. The shooting happened Saturday around 3 p.m. in a housing development west of Atlanta, Douglas County Sheriff’s Lt. Glenn Daniel said. Horrified neighbors called police and then tried to help the severely injured victims as best they could before rescuers arrived. The shooter, whose name was not immediately released, appeared to have targeted his ex-wife and her household, shooting victims inside and outside the house, Daniel said.
Several children were gunned down as they fled on a street, neighbors said. Authorities did not release the names of the victims because they were still trying Saturday to contact the next of kin. Investigators believe the gunman killed himself at the end of the shooting spree. Police were still trying to determine the shooter’s motive and piece together what happened. “I’ve been in law enforcement out here 20 years and this is the
worst I’ve ever seen,” Daniel said. He did not know when the couple divorced or if they had prior contact with police. Teresa Carter, 59, said she heard the gunfire from inside her home but did not see what happened. Carter said she often saw the children playing in the driveway and around the neighborhood. BANGKOK - Thailand’s military government has denied former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra permission to travel overseas to ensure she is in the country to face criminal charges later this month, a government spokesman said on Sunday. The military toppled the remnants of Yingluck’s government in a coup last May, ending months of demonstrations on the streets of Bangkok that had paralysed her administration. Yingluck was last week banned from politics for five years and indicted on criminal charges over her involvement in a state rice buying scheme that cost Thailand billions of dollars. The attorney general will submit a subpoena to the Supreme Court on Feb. 19, and wants Yingluck to be present for that, government spokesman Sunsern Kaewkumnerd said on Sunday. Yingluck had asked for permission to leave from Sunday until Feb. 22, he said. “The suspect must be present for the first process of the case otherwise the case cannot proceed,” Sunsern said. Yingluck’s lawyer, Norawit Laleng, said it was not necessary for her to appear in court for at least two months while prosecutors consider the case and chose judges to oversee it. “If the NCPO (junta) denies her permission to travel using her court case as an excuse, then it is a violation of her basic rights,” Norawit told Reuters. Ahead of next week’s G20 finance chiefs meeting in Istanbul, the IMF managing director said they needed to implement the G20 leaders’ commitments made at the November summit in Brisbane to boost growth, adding more than $2 trillion to the global economy and millions of jobs over the next four years. “Without action, we could see the global economic supertanker continuing to be stuck in the shallow waters of sub-par growth and meager job creation,” Lagarde said in a blog on the IMF website. The G20 industrialized countries, which account for more than 80 percent of the global economy, tasked the IMF to monitor the implementation of its growth strategy. Turkey took over the rotating G20 presidency in December. According to Lagarde, the G20 finance chiefs meeting on Monday and Tuesday should work urgently on structural reforms in the midst of global risks ranging from divergent central bank policies, with the US Federal Reserve on a tightening path while others are increasing stimulus; a stronger dollar; and weak growth and inflation in the eurozone and Japan. “We need a decisive push for structural reforms in areas such as trade, education, health, social safety nets, and labor and product markets, as well as efficient infrastructure,” she said. Though the global economy may get a further lift from falling oil prices and relatively stronger US growth, Lagarde said, the Fed’s ongoing exit of exceptional support for the US recovery, even if well-managed, could result in “excessive volatility” in financial markets. Lagarde said the strengthening dollar poses a special risk for emerging-market economies where banks and companies have increased their borrowing in the greenback over the past five years. And a further risk to the global economy was the possibility that the eurozone and Japan “could remain trapped in a twilight zone of low growth and low inflation for a prolonged period. “These ‘low-low conditions’ would raise the risk of recession and deflation, because they would make it even harder for many countries to reduce high unemployment and high debt,” Lagarde said. Owner given a 1 week-deadline to dismantle
SINGARAJA – The concrete construction, surrounding a villa, jutting out to sea, built by a foreign citizen from Germany at Munduk hamlet, Anturan village, Buleleng subdistrict, has made local fishermen furious. A number of fishermen came to the location of the concrete construction, on Thursday (Feb 5), requesting that the concrete, that is hampering their fishing activities be immediately dismantled. The insistence of the fishermen was made clear when Commission II of the Buleleng House made a site inspection to the concrete construction. As observed, dozens of fishermen visited the villa owned by Erents Edwin Baur knowing that Chairman of Commission II of the Buleleng House, Putu Mangku Budiasa, along with other memebers of the house, were conducting a site inspection. Among the Chairman’s entourage were Head of the Economic and Development Affairs of the Buleleng Regional Secretary, Ketut Suparto, a representative of the Buleleng Municipal Police and Anturan village officials. Inevitably, the situation was quite tense. The fishermen and the legislator’s entourage, met with villa owner, Erents Edwin Baur, and his wife Komang Sukrani. In the presence of the legislators and village officials, the fishermen immediately urged for the concrete construction that hampers their fishing, be dismantled immediately. Chairman of Commission II, Putu Mangku Budiasa, said that the land that is protected by the concrete that juts into the sea does in fact violate the rules. So he asked the villa owner to dismantle the concrete structure within a week. Otherwise, the House would order the Buleleng Municipal Police to dismantle it by force. “Please dismantle the concrete this week. Otherwise, our Municipal Police will do it”, he said. Other than the concrete jutting out to sea, the legislator also encountered a building on state land. The boat shaped permanent building stood firmly on the sand not far from the villa owned
by Erents Edwin Baur. Interestingly, the building, which functions as a bar, has a business license. A permission slip stapled to the building, showed that the business is owned by the Shooters Association of Indonesia (Perbakin), Buleleng. According to the permit sheet, the business is named “Kedai Perbakin”. It was said that many guests and shooter members hold a parties at the bar. “We asked for a photocopy of the certificate and told them that based on the location of the property, the building is in violation. We’ve asked the owner to dismantle the boat shaped building. Otherwise the Municipal Police would dismantle it”, he added. After being scolded by the legislators, villa owner, Erents Edwin Baur’s wife, Sukrani, said that after buying the hectare or so of land, her husband left for Germany. At that time, one of the laborers requested that preparations be made for the building materials. Her husband did not know that the building materials would be used to build a concrete structure. Her husband had then proceeded to ask if such a construction was allowed on the sea shore. The workers claimed that no one prohibited them because the construction was meant to prevent prevent coastal damage (from abrasion—Ed). Convinced by such an explanation, her husband bought building materials and started building the villa and constructed the seafront concrete barrier. “My husband did not know that the concrete violated any rules. The barrier was entirely worked on by laborers and my husband was still in Germany. Once it was built, I was asked to pay a donation to the local village and was not told to dismantle the concrete but just asked to make a ladder. My husband did so and was unaware that there was any problem”, she said. Meanwhile, related to the deadline of 1 week to dismantle the concrete, Sukrani was unable to do much and left it completely to her husband. The Head of the Bangli Transportation, Communication and Informatics Agency, Gede Arta, when asked for his confirmation, deplored the existence of such conditions. He claims that his agency has repeatedly instructed all boat operators to provide buoys for passengers and require passengers to wear lifejackets when crossing so as to ensure the safety of everyone onboard.
But so far there are still many boats that do not have buoys onboard. Gede Arta also appealed to travelers not to cross if they were not given a buoy. “We appeal to travelers not to cross the water without adequate safety requirements being met. Cambodia deports US sisters in Angkor nude photo scandal PHNOM PENH - Two American sisters have been deported from Cambodia after they were convicted of taking naked photos inside the country’s famed Angkor temple complex, officials said on Sunday. Lindsey Adams, 22, and her 20year-old sister Leslie were discovered taking nude shots of each other inside the Preah Khan temple at the world heritage site on Friday. The sisters were both given a suspended six-month prison sentence on Saturday evening on public exposure and making pornography charges and will be banned from re-entering Cambodia for four years, Koeut Sovannareth, prosecutor at northwestern Siem Reap provincial court told AFP. “The court decided to expel them from Cambodia,” he said, adding that the women had confessed to making a mistake and were fined $250. Sam Reaksmey, a senior tourism police official in Siem Reap, said the sisters were deported late Saturday night. It is the second time in the last fortnight that tourists visiting the sprawling temple complex have been
caught without their clothes. Three French tourists were deported last weekend after they pleaded guilty to taking nude pictures of each other inside another temple within the complex. Cambodian officials say the women’s actions are offensive because Angkor is considered sacred ground. “They lowered their pants to their knees and took pictures of their buttocks,” Keat Bunthan, a senior heritage police official in Siem Reap, told AFP on Saturday. The three deported French men received the same suspended sentence as the American women. The trio were caught just days after a series of photos of Asian women posing nude at ancient Cambodian temples went viral online and outraged officials who vowed to step up efforts to prevent similar stunts. The Angkor Archaeological Park, a world heritage site, contains the remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, dating from the 9th to the 15th centuries, and is Cambodia’s most popular tourist destination. LAGOS - Nobel peace laureate Malala Yousafzai on Sunday called for global support to help release more than 200 Nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram, as they marked 300 days as hostages. “As we mark this tragic 300th day of captivity for hundreds of kidnapped Nigerian schoolgirls, I call on people everywhere to join me in demanding urgent action to free these heroic girls,” she said. Boko Haram fighters seized 276 teenagers from the Government Girls’ Secondary School in the remote town of Chibok, in Borno state, northeast Nigeria, on the evening of April 14 last year. Fifty-seven managed to escaped but 219 are still being held, despite military claims that they had been located but that a rescue operation was too fraught with danger to be conducted. The girls’ abduction and subsequent claims from Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau that they have been forcibly converted to Islam or married off sparked global outrage. The hashtag #BringBackOurGirls trended on social media and saw prominent figures, including US First Lady Michelle Obama, tweet their support, as well as global street protests. Malala, 17, who was shot by the
Pakistani Taliban for defying threats about her attending school, visited Nigeria in July last year to urge President Goodluck Jonathan to take action. Jonathan has been widely criticised for what has been seen as a lacklustre response to the crisis and for failing to end the deadly, six-year insurgency. On Sunday, Malala said the government in Abuja and the international community “can and must do much more to resolve this crisis and change their weak response to date”. “If these girls were the children of politically or financially powerful parents, much more would be done to free them,” the children’s rights campaigner added in a statement. “But they come from an impoverished area of northeast Nigeria and sadly, little has changed since they were kidnapped.” Nigeria is preparing to go to the polls to elect a new president and parliament. Malala said politicians who secure a win should commit to making the Chibok girls’ release -- and the education of all Nigerian children -- a priority in their first 100 days in office. “Let’s end this horrible saga now. INDONESIA Police chief row sparks crisis for Widodo
JAKARTA - A feud between Indonesia’s law enforcement and its corruption watchdog over the nomination of a police chief has escalated into a full-blown crisis for Joko Widodo, testing the new president’s pledge to usher in cleaner governance. Barely 100 days into his term, Widodo sparked an outcry last month when he nominated Budi Gunawan, a politically-connected figure with a murky financial record, to be head of the national police. The situation snowballed several days later when the anti-corruption agency, known as the KPK, named Gunawan as the subject of a bribery investigation, prompting Widodo to postpone -- but not cancel -- his appointment as police chief. The notoriously corrupt police -- who have in the past clashed with the hugely popular KPK -retaliated by arresting the agency’s deputy chairman on years-old perjury allegations, triggering angry protests. The deputy chairman has resigned, and police are now threatening to bring charges against the KPK’s entire leadership, a move that the agency warns could paralyse it. Activists rallying day after day outside KPK headquarters are urging Widodo, who comes from a humble background and is Indonesia’s first leader from outside
the political and military elites, to intervene. But so far the president has taken a cautious approach to a scandal that is proving the first real test of his leadership. “If he blunders in this KPK case, his image of running a clean government, he can kiss it goodbye,” Yohanes Sulaiman, a political expert at the Indonesian Defense University, told AFP. Widodo, popularly known as Jokowi, is under immense pressure to make a decision about Gunawan’s future, but is backed into a corner. Pressing ahead and installing a known criminal suspect as police chief would shatter his clean credentials, but Widodo risks revolt from political allies if he dumps Gunawan. Parliament, which must endorse new police chiefs, has already
backed Gunawan, and many parties -- including from Widodo’s own coalition -- want to see him inaugurated. Gunawan used to be a close aide of Megawati Sukarnoputri, the head of Widodo’s political party who backed him for the presidency, and many suspect she is the one who is continuing to push the officer’s nomination. Widodo is seeking to buy time as he mulls a way out of the crisis. He asked a team of hand-picked advisers to recommend a course of action, and they said he should not press ahead with the nomination. While he now seems likely to reject the nomination in the coming days, Widodo is facing accusations of dithering like his predecessor Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who was frequently criticised for his indecision. Erry Riyana Hardjapamekas, one of the special advisers assisting the president, said Widodo wanted to please but was more firm than his predecessor. “I think there is a strong will to solve this problem as soon as possible,” he said, adding he did not think Widodo would go ahead with Gunawan’s inauguration. But activists fear every day that passes puts the KPK in greater jeopardy. If police level accusations against the remaining commissioners they will be forced by law to stand aside, hollowing out the agency’s leadership. While the current showdown has triggered an immediate crisis for Widodo, it has also prompted broader questions about how to stop the cycle of conflict that has seen the police and KPK lock horns over the years. The KPK has made many enemies since it was established in 2002 to improve Indonesia’s poor record on fighting graft. Bribery is pervasive in Southeast Asia’s largest economy, which was ranked 107th out of 175 nations and territo-
ries in Transparency International’s latest corruption index. A number one ranking means the least corrupt. The KPK has exposed graft at the highest levels, leading to convictions for high-profile figures such as the former top judge of the constitutional court, who was jailed for life for bribery last year. But the agency’s near perfect conviction rate has attracted many enemies, none more than the police, who loath its extensive powers to pursue cases and seek prosecutions in a special corruption court. The force has baulked at KPK attempts to tackle police corruption, with Indonesia’s chief detective in 2009 famously mocking it as a “gecko versus a crocodile”. Some are calling on Widodo to grant KPK commissioners immunity from prosecution during their tenures. However, others see tensions as inevitable until the graft-ridden police undertake drastic reform. “I think it will be a long battle, a long war,” said Hardjapamekas. (afp)

JAKARTA — Indonesian divers have recovered several more bodies from December’s AirAsia crash, including one from the jet’s cockpit, bringing the total number of victims retrieved to 100, an official said Saturday. The Airbus A320-200 crashed into the Java Sea on Dec. 28 while flying from Surabaya, Indonesia’s second-largest city, to Singapore. All 162 people on board were killed. Divers on Friday retrieved four bodies, including one from the cockpit, said Henry Bambang Soelistyo, chief of Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency. He said the decomposed body — in uniform and still strapped by a seat belt — was believed to be either the pilot, Iriyanto, who like many Indonesians used one name, or French co-pilot Remi Emmanuel Plesel. Soelistyo said a strong underwater current hampered attempts by divers Saturday to retrieve the other body from the cockpit. Three more bodies were recovered Saturday, bringing to 100 the number of victims retrieved, Soelistyo told MetroTV. Some of the bodies were found off Sulawesi island, about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) east of the crash site. More than 60 divers are taking part in the search, which resumed Jan. 31 following several failed attempts to lift the fuselage from the seabed. (ap)

Mavericks surge late to overrun Trail Blazers
DALLAS — Dallas’ Dirk Nowitzki capped a late rally with a 3-pointer that forced overtime and the Mavericks went on to beat Portland 111-101 on Saturday, moving onto the Trail Blazers’ tail in the tight fight for playoff positions in the NBA Western Conference. The Mavericks now have one more win than the Blazers, but Portland has a greater winning percentage and the comfort of leading the Northwest Division by 8-1/2 games. Elsewhere, Chicago routed New Orleans to regain leadership of the Central Division, but remained half a game behind Washington in the Eastern Conference after the Wizards crushed Brooklyn. Mavericks surge late to overrun Trail Blazers
DALLAS — Dallas’ Dirk Nowitzki capped a late rally with a 3-pointer that forced overtime and the Mavericks went on to beat Portland 111-101 on Saturday, moving onto the Trail Blazers’ tail in the tight fight for playoff positions in the NBA Western Conference. The Mavericks now have one more win than the Blazers, but Portland has a greater winning percentage and the comfort of leading the Northwest Division by 8-1/2 games. Elsewhere, Chicago routed New Orleans to regain leadership of the Central Division, but remained half a game behind Washington in the Eastern Conference after the Wizards crushed Brooklyn. The heir to the throne also voiced concern about Christians fleeing the Middle East in droves, saying the situation might end with very few left in the cradle of the religion. In a BBC radio interview, Charles said radicalisation was “one of the greatest worries” and the issue could not be simply “swept under the carpet. “It’s the extent which this is happening is the alarming part,” the 66-year-old said. Speaking of “the values we hold dear”, Charles said: “You’d think that the people who have come here, born here, go to school here would abide by those values and outlooks. “But, the frightening part is that people can be so radicalised either through contact with somebody else or through the Internet and the extraordinary amount of crazy stuff
which is on the Internet.” He added: “Some aspect of this radicalisation is a search for adventure and excitement at a particular age.” The Prince of Wales said much of his own work with young people in deprived areas had been aimed at finding “constructive paths” for people to channel their energies. As first in line to become the British monarch, Charles is thus next in the line of succession to become the supreme governor of the Church of England under the title Defender of the Faith. He explained that he, as does his mother Queen Elizabeth II, interprets the role not as being “to defend Anglicism to the exclusion of other religions” but instead to protect all religions because “the Church has a duty to protect the free practice of all faiths in this country”. Cambodia deports US sisters in Angkor nude photo scandal PHNOM PENH - Two American sisters have been deported from Cambodia after they were convicted of taking naked photos inside the country’s famed Angkor temple complex, officials said on Sunday. Lindsey Adams, 22, and her 20year-old sister Leslie were discovered taking nude shots of each other inside the Preah Khan temple at the world heritage site on Friday. The sisters were both given a suspended six-month prison sentence on Saturday evening on public exposure and making pornography charges and will be banned from re-entering Cambodia for four years, Koeut Sovannareth, prosecutor at northwestern Siem Reap provincial court told AFP. “The court decided to expel them from Cambodia,” he said, adding that the women had confessed to making a mistake and were fined $250. Sam Reaksmey, a senior tourism police official in Siem Reap, said the sisters were deported late Saturday night. It is the second time in the last fortnight that tourists visiting the sprawling temple complex have been
caught without their clothes. Three French tourists were deported last weekend after they pleaded guilty to taking nude pictures of each other inside another temple within the complex. Cambodian officials say the women’s actions are offensive because Angkor is considered sacred ground. “They lowered their pants to their knees and took pictures of their buttocks,” Keat Bunthan, a senior heritage police official in Siem Reap, told AFP on Saturday. The three deported French men received the same suspended sentence as the American women. The trio were caught just days after a series of photos of Asian women posing nude at ancient Cambodian temples went viral online and outraged officials who vowed to step up efforts to prevent similar stunts. The Angkor Archaeological Park, a world heritage site, contains the remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, dating from the 9th to the 15th centuries, and is Cambodia’s most popular tourist destination. LAGOS - Nobel peace laureate Malala Yousafzai on Sunday called for global support to help release more than 200 Nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram, as they marked 300 days as hostages. “As we mark this tragic 300th day of captivity for hundreds of kidnapped Nigerian schoolgirls, I call on people everywhere to join me in demanding urgent action to free these heroic girls,” she said. Boko Haram fighters seized 276 teenagers from the Government Girls’ Secondary School in the remote town of Chibok, in Borno state, northeast Nigeria, on the evening of April 14 last year. Fifty-seven managed to escaped but 219 are still being held, despite military claims that they had been located but that a rescue operation was too fraught with danger to be conducted. The girls’ abduction and subsequent claims from Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau that they have been forcibly converted to Islam or married off sparked global outrage. The hashtag #BringBackOurGirls trended on social media and saw prominent figures, including US First Lady Michelle Obama, tweet their support, as well as global street protests. Malala, 17, who was shot by the
Pakistani Taliban for defying threats about her attending school, visited Nigeria in July last year to urge President Goodluck Jonathan to take action. Jonathan has been widely criticised for what has been seen as a lacklustre response to the crisis and for failing to end the deadly, six-year insurgency. On Sunday, Malala said the government in Abuja and the international community “can and must do much more to resolve this crisis and change their weak response to date”. “If these girls were the children of politically or financially powerful parents, much more would be done to free them,” the children’s rights campaigner added in a statement. “But they come from an impoverished area of northeast Nigeria and sadly, little has changed since they were kidnapped.” Nigeria is preparing to go to the polls to elect a new president and parliament. Malala said politicians who secure a win should commit to making the Chibok girls’ release -- and the education of all Nigerian children -- a priority in their first 100 days in office. “Let’s end this horrible saga now. INDONESIA Police chief row sparks crisis for Widodo
JAKARTA - A feud between Indonesia’s law enforcement and its corruption watchdog over the nomination of a police chief has escalated into a full-blown crisis for Joko Widodo, testing the new president’s pledge to usher in cleaner governance. Barely 100 days into his term, Widodo sparked an outcry last month when he nominated Budi Gunawan, a politically-connected figure with a murky financial record, to be head of the national police. The situation snowballed several days later when the anti-corruption agency, known as the KPK, named Gunawan as the subject of a bribery investigation, prompting Widodo to postpone -- but not cancel -- his appointment as police chief. The notoriously corrupt police -- who have in the past clashed with the hugely popular KPK -retaliated by arresting the agency’s deputy chairman on years-old perjury allegations, triggering angry protests. The deputy chairman has resigned, and police are now threatening to bring charges against the KPK’s entire leadership, a move that the agency warns could paralyse it. Activists rallying day after day outside KPK headquarters are urging Widodo, who comes from a humble background and is Indonesia’s first leader from outside
the political and military elites, to intervene. But so far the president has taken a cautious approach to a scandal that is proving the first real test of his leadership. “If he blunders in this KPK case, his image of running a clean government, he can kiss it goodbye,” Yohanes Sulaiman, a political expert at the Indonesian Defense University, told AFP. Widodo, popularly known as Jokowi, is under immense pressure to make a decision about Gunawan’s future, but is backed into a corner. Pressing ahead and installing a known criminal suspect as police chief would shatter his clean credentials, but Widodo risks revolt from political allies if he dumps Gunawan. Parliament, which must endorse new police chiefs, has already
backed Gunawan, and many parties -- including from Widodo’s own coalition -- want to see him inaugurated. Gunawan used to be a close aide of Megawati Sukarnoputri, the head of Widodo’s political party who backed him for the presidency, and many suspect she is the one who is continuing to push the officer’s nomination. Widodo is seeking to buy time as he mulls a way out of the crisis. He asked a team of hand-picked advisers to recommend a course of action, and they said he should not press ahead with the nomination. While he now seems likely to reject the nomination in the coming days, Widodo is facing accusations of dithering like his predecessor Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who was frequently criticised for his indecision. Erry Riyana Hardjapamekas, one of the special advisers assisting the president, said Widodo wanted to please but was more firm than his predecessor. “I think there is a strong will to solve this problem as soon as possible,” he said, adding he did not think Widodo would go ahead with Gunawan’s inauguration. But activists fear every day that passes puts the KPK in greater jeopardy. If police level accusations against the remaining commissioners they will be forced by law to stand aside, hollowing out the agency’s leadership. While the current showdown has triggered an immediate crisis for Widodo, it has also prompted broader questions about how to stop the cycle of conflict that has seen the police and KPK lock horns over the years. The KPK has made many enemies since it was established in 2002 to improve Indonesia’s poor record on fighting graft. Bribery is pervasive in Southeast Asia’s largest economy, which was ranked 107th out of 175 nations and territo-
ries in Transparency International’s latest corruption index. A number one ranking means the least corrupt. The KPK has exposed graft at the highest levels, leading to convictions for high-profile figures such as the former top judge of the constitutional court, who was jailed for life for bribery last year. But the agency’s near perfect conviction rate has attracted many enemies, none more than the police, who loath its extensive powers to pursue cases and seek prosecutions in a special corruption court. The force has baulked at KPK attempts to tackle police corruption, with Indonesia’s chief detective in 2009 famously mocking it as a “gecko versus a crocodile”. Some are calling on Widodo to grant KPK commissioners immunity from prosecution during their tenures. However, others see tensions as inevitable until the graft-ridden police undertake drastic reform. “I think it will be a long battle, a long war,” said Hardjapamekas. (afp)

JAKARTA — Indonesian divers have recovered several more bodies from December’s AirAsia crash, including one from the jet’s cockpit, bringing the total number of victims retrieved to 100, an official said Saturday. The Airbus A320-200 crashed into the Java Sea on Dec. 28 while flying from Surabaya, Indonesia’s second-largest city, to Singapore. All 162 people on board were killed. Divers on Friday retrieved four bodies, including one from the cockpit, said Henry Bambang Soelistyo, chief of Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency. He said the decomposed body — in uniform and still strapped by a seat belt — was believed to be either the pilot, Iriyanto, who like many Indonesians used one name, or French co-pilot Remi Emmanuel Plesel. Soelistyo said a strong underwater current hampered attempts by divers Saturday to retrieve the other body from the cockpit. Three more bodies were recovered Saturday, bringing to 100 the number of victims retrieved, Soelistyo told MetroTV. Some of the bodies were found off Sulawesi island, about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) east of the crash site. More than 60 divers are taking part in the search, which resumed Jan. 31 following several failed attempts to lift the fuselage from the seabed. (ap)

Ahead of next week’s G20 finance chiefs meeting in Istanbul, the IMF managing director said they needed to implement the G20 leaders’ commitments made at the November summit in Brisbane to boost growth, adding more than $2 trillion to the global economy and millions of jobs over the next four years. “Without action, we could see the global economic supertanker continuing to be stuck in the shallow waters of sub-par growth and meager job creation,” Lagarde said in a blog on the IMF website. The G20 industrialized countries, which account for more than 80 percent of the global economy, tasked the IMF to monitor the implementation of its growth strategy. Turkey took over the rotating G20 presidency in December. According to Lagarde, the G20 finance chiefs meeting on Monday and Tuesday should work urgently on structural reforms in the midst of global risks ranging from divergent central bank policies, with the US Federal Reserve on a tightening path while others are increasing stimulus; a stronger dollar; and weak growth and inflation in the eurozone and Japan. “We need a decisive push for structural reforms in areas such as trade, education, health, social safety nets, and labor and product markets, as well as efficient infrastructure,” she said. Though the global economy may get a further lift from falling oil prices and relatively stronger US growth, Lagarde said, the Fed’s ongoing exit of exceptional support for the US recovery, even if well-managed, could result in “excessive volatility” in financial markets. Lagarde said the strengthening dollar poses a special risk for emerging-market economies where banks and companies have increased their borrowing in the greenback over the past five years. And a further risk to the global economy was the possibility that the eurozone and Japan “could remain trapped in a twilight zone of low growth and low inflation for a prolonged period. “These ‘low-low conditions’ would raise the risk of recession and deflation, because they would make it even harder for many countries to reduce high unemployment and high debt,” Lagarde said. SINGARAJA – The concrete construction, surrounding a villa, jutting out to sea, built by a foreign citizen from Germany at Munduk hamlet, Anturan village, Buleleng subdistrict, has made local fishermen furious. A number of fishermen came to the location of the concrete construction, on Thursday (Feb 5), requesting that the concrete, that is hampering their fishing activities be immediately dismantled. The insistence of the fishermen was made clear when Commission II of the Buleleng House made a site inspection to the concrete construction. As observed, dozens of fishermen visited the villa owned by Erents Edwin Baur knowing that Chairman of Commission II of the Buleleng House, Putu Mangku Budiasa, along with other memebers of the house, were conducting a site inspection. Among the Chairman’s entourage were Head of the Economic and Development Affairs of the Buleleng Regional Secretary, Ketut Suparto, a representative of the Buleleng Municipal Police and Anturan village officials. Inevitably, the situation was quite tense. The fishermen and the legislator’s entourage, met with villa owner, Erents Edwin Baur, and his wife Komang Sukrani. In the presence of the legislators and village officials, the fishermen immediately urged for the concrete construction that hampers their fishing, be dismantled immediately. Chairman of Commission II, Putu Mangku Budiasa, said that the land that is protected by the concrete that juts into the sea does in fact violate the rules. So he asked the villa owner to dismantle the concrete structure within a week. Otherwise, the House would order the Buleleng Municipal Police to dismantle it by force. “Please dismantle the concrete this week. Otherwise, our Municipal Police will do it”, he said. Other than the concrete jutting out to sea, the legislator also encountered a building on state land. The boat shaped permanent building stood firmly on the sand not far from the villa owned
by Erents Edwin Baur. Interestingly, the building, which functions as a bar, has a business license. A permission slip stapled to the building, showed that the business is owned by the Shooters Association of Indonesia (Perbakin), Buleleng. According to the permit sheet, the business is named “Kedai Perbakin”. It was said that many guests and shooter members hold a parties at the bar. “We asked for a photocopy of the certificate and told them that based on the location of the property, the building is in violation. We’ve asked the owner to dismantle the boat shaped building. Otherwise the Municipal Police would dismantle it”, he added. After being scolded by the legislators, villa owner, Erents Edwin Baur’s wife, Sukrani, said that after buying the hectare or so of land, her husband left for Germany. At that time, one of the laborers requested that preparations be made for the building materials. Her husband did not know that the building materials would be used to build a concrete structure. Her husband had then proceeded to ask if such a construction was allowed on the sea shore. The workers claimed that no one prohibited them because the construction was meant to prevent prevent coastal damage (from abrasion—Ed). Convinced by such an explanation, her husband bought building materials and started building the villa and constructed the seafront concrete barrier. “My husband did not know that the concrete violated any rules. The barrier was entirely worked on by laborers and my husband was still in Germany. Once it was built, I was asked to pay a donation to the local village and was not told to dismantle the concrete but just asked to make a ladder. My husband did so and was unaware that there was any problem”, she said. Meanwhile, related to the deadline of 1 week to dismantle the concrete, Sukrani was unable to do much and left it completely to her husband. The Head of the Bangli Transportation, Communication and Informatics Agency, Gede Arta, when asked for his confirmation, deplored the existence of such conditions. He claims that his agency has repeatedly instructed all boat operators to provide buoys for passengers and require passengers to wear lifejackets when crossing so as to ensure the safety of everyone onboard.
But so far there are still many boats that do not have buoys onboard. Gede Arta also appealed to travelers not to cross if they were not given a buoy. “We appeal to travelers not to cross the water without adequate safety requirements being met. We ask that people please report to us if they encounter boats that do not provide buoys, or if there are still individuals disturb-
ing the comfort of passengers by committing blackmail on the boat” he explained. With the opening of the AEC, foreign educational institutions are free to open a branch in Bali. Bali is indeed considered a potentially growing market in terms of education because of the rapidly increasing economic standards of the local population. Evidently, many foreign educational institutions have their eyes on Bali as witnessed by the many exibitions that they have held in Bali in recent years. These foreign educational institutions were facilitated by educational consulting agencies in Bali, which are increasingly active in trying to lure prospective students in Bali. “This AEC brings with it the implication that many foreign educational institutions will be opening up shop in Bali. However, we must not let them simply run education
businesses in Bali”, said education practitioner Prof. Gede Sri Darma, D.B.A. According to Darma, Bali is a very strong magnet not only for travelers but also for investors and entrepreneurs including those engaged in the field of education. “Many investors want to do business in Bali. are overly business-oriented with their intention to produce quality human resources simply being a disguise to reap maximal profits in Bali. “If their hidden agenda is business rather than education, our educational sector will find itself in a very bad situation. Indeed there are some institutions that genuinely do intend to produce quality human resources in Bali, while others are simply providing a diploma that does not guarantee that our young generation will be able compete in the AEC”, he warned. And this nation should manage its own education and continue to improve the quality of existing educational facilities”, he emphasised. Another implication of foreign
educational institutions operating in Bali is that shifts in the mindset and cultural orientation of the younger generation are likely to occur, which has some people worried. It is in no way certain that foreign educational institutions would uphold and accommodate the values of local wisdom and Balinese culture. Likely they would emphasise the culture of their own country. “So far, we have easily accept foreign culture without prior selection due to the lack of education regarding our local wisdom teachings. Nonetheless, our own schools can more strongly highlight local wisdom which could actually be a selling point for attracting foreign students to come study in Bali, in order to learn about Balinese culture and values such as the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana”, he concluded. DENPASAR - The Bali Province administration will establish 12 tourism villages in 2015 to attract more international tourists to the Island. “We are targeting to build 12 tourism villages. We are still waiting for proposals from district administrations so that we can start developing villages for the program,” Chief of the Tourism Service of Bali Province Anak Agung Gde Yuniartha Putra said. The Bali administration will develop human resources and infrastructure facilities in tourism villages and will ensure the security and comfort of tourists. Yuniartha noted that village administrations must be able to offer tourists several attractions. “Every tourism village should offer attractions that are unique to it. For example, if a village has hills, then they can offer hiking activity. Likewise, if a village has plantation fields, the administration can offer paddy or coffee planting activities,” the Chief explained. He expressed hope that tourists will help local economies by spending their mooney on these activities that will be offered at affordable prices. The Chief observed that the tourism village concept has great potential and is suitable for Bali that has several cultural tourism sites with specific characteristics. “There are several places in Gianyar district that can be developed into tourism villages; for instance, Batubulan village that specializes in stone carving or Mas village, which does wood carving, and Ubud village that is popular for its paintings,” Yuniartha pointed out. The Chief added that tourism villages can improve local economies and will subsequently help other villages too. “In 2014, we developed a similar tourism village program involving 11 villages. DOUGLASVILLE, Georgia — Neighbors along a quiet, suburban street outside Atlanta were left horrified after police say a man shot six people, killing four of them, including his ex-wife and several children before ending the rampage by turning the gun on himself. The shooting happened Saturday around 3 p.m. in a housing development west of Atlanta, Douglas County Sheriff’s Lt. Glenn Daniel said. Horrified neighbors called police and then tried to help the severely injured victims as best they could before rescuers arrived. The shooter, whose name was not immediately released, appeared to have targeted his ex-wife and her household, shooting victims inside and outside the house, Daniel said.
Several children were gunned down as they fled on a street, neighbors said. Authorities did not release the names of the victims because they were still trying Saturday to contact the next of kin. Investigators believe the gunman killed himself at the end of the shooting spree. Police were still trying to determine the shooter’s motive and piece together what happened. “I’ve been in law enforcement out here 20 years and this is the
worst I’ve ever seen,” Daniel said. He did not know when the couple divorced or if they had prior contact with police. Teresa Carter, 59, said she heard the gunfire from inside her home but did not see what happened. Carter said she often saw the children playing in the driveway and around the neighborhood. The military toppled the remnants of Yingluck’s government in a coup last May, ending months of demonstrations on the streets of Bangkok that had paralysed her administration. Yingluck was last week banned from politics for five years and indicted on criminal charges over her involvement in a state rice buying scheme that cost Thailand billions of dollars. The attorney general will submit a subpoena to the Supreme Court on Feb. 19, and wants Yingluck to be present for that, government spokesman Sunsern Kaewkumnerd said on Sunday. Yingluck had asked for permission to leave from Sunday until Feb. 22, he said. “The suspect must be present for the first process of the case otherwise the case cannot proceed,” Sunsern said. NEW YORK — A new movie starring Al Pacino as an aging actor was partly shot at a grand old theater on New York City’s Staten Island with an interesting history.
Pacino performs several scenes in “The Humbling” on the stage of the St. George Theatre, which is located about a half-mile (about 800 meters) from where Staten Island’s famous ferries cruise past the Statue of Liberty to Lower Manhattan. In one scene shot at the St. George, Pacino throws himself off the stage into the audience; in another, he has a confrontation with an old friend, Dianne Wiest, in the orchestra. The theater has been used as a film set in other movies such as “The School of Rock” and for TV shows including “Gossip Girl,” ‘’Gotham” and “Smash.” “Film crews like our location since it is under the radar but yet still in New York City,” said Wayne Miller, the theater’s executive director. “Certainly, an actor of Al Pacino’s renown could not film an outdoor scene near a public street without a mob, and yet he filmed a scene in our stage door alley with no gathering of paparazzi.” Chellsey Cruz, a spokeswoman for the movie, said the St. George was chosen because “it’s grand enough to feel like Broadway” without the difficulty and expense of shooting on Broadway. Australian religious leaders’ plea for death row pair
SYDNEY/DENPASAR - Senior religious leaders in Australia Sunday called on Indonesia to show mercy to two men on death row in Bali, as Indonesia’s top diplomat in the country said their executions would go ahead. Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran were arrested in 2005 on the holiday island of Bali and sentenced to death the following year for attempting to smuggle heroin out of Indonesia. The pair, members of an Australian drug-smuggling gang dubbed the “Bali Nine”, recently lost their final appeals for clemency despite arguing that they had rehabilitated themselves in prison. Indonesian authorities are pushing ahead with the planned executions, which are expected to be carried out this month. The mother and sister of Myuran Sukumaran, an Australian drug convict on death row, left in tears after visiting him at Krobokan Prison in Denpasar. “Please don’t kill my son,” Raji Sukumaran, the mother, told a group of journalists before getting into a car. She visited the prison with her daughter Brintha Sukumaran two days after the Bali District Court rejected Myuran’s request for a review of his case. According to the Denpasar District Court’s spokesman, Hasoloan Sian-
turi, the requests of Myuran (33) and Andrew Chan (31), another Australian convict on death row, could not be sent to the Supreme Court as they did not meet all formal requirements. The two were arrested along with seven other Australians in 2005, when they were attempting to smuggle 8.3 kilograms of heroin from Bali to Sydney, Australia. Earlier, Sukumaran’s clemency petition was rejected by President Joko Widodo. Indonesia had recently executed five drug convicts as part of its serious efforts to combat drug trafficking in
the country. The five convicts were Namaona Denis of Malawi, Marco Archer Cardoso Moreira of Brazil, Daniel Enemuo alias Diarrassouba Mamadou of Nigeria, Ang Kiem Soei, alias Kim Ho, alias Ance Tahir, of the Netherlands, Rani Andriani, alias Melisa Aprilia, of Indonesia, and Tran Thi Bich Hanh of Vietnam. A number of investor’s have already approached the temple priests to ask for their support. But we absolutely reject them every time. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Woman killed as Bruce Jenner crashes car in US paparazzi chase
LOS ANGELES - Olympic decathlon star and former stepfather to the Kardashian clan Bruce Jenner was involved in a car crash Saturday that killed one and injured several others, though he was unharmed, TMZ reported. The deadly accident took place on the Pacific Coast Highway in the Los Angeles metro area while Jenner was being chased by paparazzi, according to the gossip news website. The 65-year-old has Americans’ rapt attention amid talk that he is soon to come out as transgender. Jenner was driving a large SUV and was being trailed by at least five paparazzi when he collided with a white car that then swerved into oncoming traffic, TMZ reported. The
driver of the white car died. Citing unnamed law enforcement sources, TMZ said four vehicles were involved in the crash and that eight people were injured. Jenner was pictured at the scene standing upright with no obvious injuries and was driven away in a police cruiser following the accident. penned “Eastern Promises” and recently directed the acclaimed indie “Locke.” The film marks a continued run of live-action dramas for Zemeckis, the director of “Forrest Gump,” the “Back to the Future” films and “Cast Away.” After a series of animated movies last

‘Birdman’ filmmaker wins top prize at Directors Guild Awards
LOS ANGELES - After taking top honors from the acting and producing guilds, the film about a washed-up Hollywood actor played by Michael Keaton won the top prize at the Directors Guild Awards. “Birdman” writer-director Alejandro Inarritu was honored at Saturday’s ceremony with the prize for outstanding directional achievement for a feature film, giving Inarritu and possibly “Birdman” an edge ahead of the Academy Awards. “If this is considered a great film, it has nothing to do with me,” said Inarritu speaking about the difficulties of making movies as he accepted his award. “It is a miracle.” The guild dispenses awards to directors in TV and movie categories in what’s customarily a final calling for the film that goes on to win the best director trophy and possibly best picture at the Oscars. Inarritu flew past Richard Linklater (“Boyhood”), Wes Anderson (“The Grand Budapest Hotel”), Morten Tyldum (“The Imitation Game”) and Clint Eastwood (“American Sniper”) to win the film directing trophy. They’ll face off again Feb. 22 for the best director Oscar, except for Eastwood who was not nominated. Instead, “Foxcatcher” filmmaker Bennett Miller is up for that honor at the Academy Awards. This figure is a slight increase from the figures of 2013 that showed a 6.69 percent economic growth. The inflation rate reached 8.43 percent at the end of last year, and the delayed absorption of the local government budget was alleged to have contributed to the slowdown in the economic growth of the Island of the Gods. “In the fields of business, the service sector and social activities there was a 12.43 percent increase. While administration increased 10.75 percent and education service, 10.58 percent. Public expenditure for official travel in November caused a decrease in the absorption of both the national and regional budgets from IDR 5.2 trillion in 2013 to IDR 4.53 trillion in 2014.

of 2014 reached 6.72 percent but did not occur in all sectors. Government expenditure and changes in inventory were reflected in this decline. The 7.36 contraction of government consumption expenditure has been a hallmark over the past five years, and is likely a result of the new policy issued by the government that prohibits meetings from taking place in hotels. “At the same time this contraction also caused a decline in the National and Provincial budgetary absorption from IDR 5.20 trillion in 2013 to IDR 4.53 trillion in 2014”, he concluded.
