‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’ Roars Past ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi,’ ‘Insidious 4’ LOS ANGELES - Sony’s “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” handily won the first box office weekend of 2018 over the launch of “Insidious: The Last Key” and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” with $36 million at 3,801 North American locations. The fourth installment of the “Insidious” horror franchise scared up a surprisingly strong $29.3 million at 3,116 sites for Universal. Disney-Lucasfilm’s “The Last Jedi” followed in third with a 55% decline to $23.6 million at 4,232 venues for a 24-day total of $572.5 million -the sixth-largest of all-time. Fox’s third weekend of “The Greatest Showman” held nicely in fourth, declining only 12% to $13.6 million at 3,342 theaters for a 19day total of about $77 million. It was followed in fifth by Universal’s third session of “Pitch Perfect 3” with $10.2 million at 3,458 sites, lifting its 17-day take to a solid $86 million.

Fox’s fourth weekend of animated comedy “Ferdinand” finished sixth with $7.7 million at 3,156 venues, followed by Jessica Chastain’s “Molly’s Game” from STXfilms, which brought in $7 million after expanding to 1,608 sites from 271. Chastain received a Golden Globe nomination for best actress in a drama for her work in the film -- whether or not she wins will be determined Sunday. The film also received a Producers Guild Award nomination on Friday for best film, a day after Aaron Sorkin’s script received a Writers Guild nom for adapted screenplay. The “Jumanji” sequel has taken in $244.4 million in its first 19 days domestically. It’s the first weekend box office win for “Jumanji” -- which has gone past “Justice League” as the ninth-largest domestic grosser among 2017 titles. “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” is also topping the $500 million mark worldwide. LOS ANGELES - Dark drama “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” was the big winner with four Golden Globes awards on Sunday on a night marked by scathing jokes about sexual harassment and passionate odes to those breaking their silence.

Mother-daughter comedy “Lady Bird” was named best comedy film and the indie A24 movie’s star Saoirse Ronan won for comedy actress. Gary Oldman was named best drama movie actor for his role as British wartime leader Winston Churchill in Focus Features’ “Darkest Hour” and Frances McDormand took home the award for drama actress for her role as an angry mother seeking vengeance in Fox Searchlight’s “Three Billboards.” James Franco won the comedy actor award for his cult movie homage “The Disaster Artist,” also from A24. Mexican director Guillermo del Toro won best director for magical fantasy “The Shape of Water.”

However, the night was dominated not by who took home prizes but by jokes and speeches about the sexual misconduct scandal that has rocked Hollywood. “Happy New Year Hollywood! It’s 2018. Vietnam starts high-profile trial over oil firm losses

HANOI - Vietnam began the trial on Monday of 22 executives charged over losses totalling hundreds of millions of dollars at the state oil firm, PetroVietnam, with the most serious offences potentially carrying the death penalty. The defendants included the communist state’s first politburo member to face trial in decades and a businessman who Germany says was kidnapped by Vietnamese agents from a Berlin park. The trial is part of a widespread crackdown on fraud and mismanagement in the energy and banking sectors that intensified after the security establishment gained greater influence in the ruling party last year. The PetroVietnam trial in Hanoi was taking place simultaneously with a separate trial in the commercial capital Ho Chi Minh City, where a fraud case involving Vietnam’s Construction Bank was being heard. The 46 defendants include the bank’s ex-chairman Pham Cong Danh, who is accused of causing losses of 6.1 trillion dong

($268.62 million), according to the government’s news website. Total losses caused by fraud at the bank amounted to 15.5 trillion Vietnam dong ($682.55 million), a previous report said. The PetroVietnam case at the Hanoi People’s Court was not open to the public and security was tight. Photographs released by the Vietnam News Agency, the official state news provider, showed defendants handcuffed as they were led to the courtroom. Of the 22 executives on trial, 12 are accused of “violation of state regulations on economic management causing serious con-

sequences”. Eight are accused of embezzlement, according to the government’s official news website. Two are accused of both. The most senior former executive on trial is Dinh La Thang, who was arrested last month. He is a former politburo member who was dismissed from his post over the losses at PetroVietnam and then stripped of his role as party head of Ho Chi Minh City. Also on trial is Trinh Xuan Thanh, who Germany says was kidnapped last year and taken home against his will to face accusations over losses of more than $150 million at a subsidiary of PetroVi-

etnam. Thanh is accused of both corruption and breaking state rules on economic management. A Reuters reporter saw the bespectacled Thanh arrive under police escort at the court on Monday. Thanh appeared on state television in August and said he had decided to return home to turn himself in. Neither Thang nor Thanh made any comment at the court and Reuters was unable to contact the lawyers representing them. The maximum jail term for deliberate violation of state regulations is 20 years in prison, state television VTV1 reported in a news bulletin on Monday. Government critics have voiced suspicions that the corruption crackdown is politically motivated, at least in part, and aimed against those close to former prime minister Nguyen Tan Dung, who lost out in an internal power struggle in 2016.

The trial is due to last until Jan. 21. In a separate case linked to the corruption crackdown, a fugitive Vietnamese tycoon was arrested in Hanoi on Thursday after being sent home from Singapore, where he was accused of immigration offences. Phan Van Anh Vu, 42, told his lawyers he was also a senior officer in Vietnam’s secret police and was trying to get to Germany and could have details of the operation in which Thanh was spirited home from Berlin last year. Equitable development to overcome spatial issues DENPASAR —Equity of economic growth and development are key in addressing spatial planning issues. Once there is equity, population density can be spread out more evenly. Currently almost 70 percent of traffic circulation occurs in Denasar and Badung. For example, rice can be grown in regions other than Tabanan like in Buleleng or Karangasem even though they may have another focus. For Example snakefruit in Karangasem and mango in

Buleleng. Then, hotels can also be strongly encouraged to buy these products”, he explained. According to Kusuma Putra, there is no need to constantly question how continuously a product can be supplied. Natural local agricultural products are available seasonally. Hotel guests can be served the

fruits that are available that season instead of having one type of fruit available all year long, he said. “Our biodiversity is no less competitive than others and I think that all parties could be excited about taking advantage of this if hotels get onboard. Farmers are excited about this idea”, he explained. A Balinese spatial planning expert, Putu Rumawan Salain, said there is a need to apply a spatial layout ‘fatwa’ consisting of three aspects; planning, utilisation and control. “Crowded areas need to be controlled and we need to use holistic and integrated planning to develop less densely populated areas”, he said.

In other words, continued Rumawan, construction facilities need to be made available in all parts of Bali. If we want ot develop tourism then the government needs to prepare adequate infrastructure, only then can the public or private sector fill in the rest. For example, the development of hospitality facilities in recreational spots in North Bali from Lovina to West Bali has begun, he explained.. “Negara is an area with a lot of potential that needs to be developed. The distance between potential attractions is quite close. But is we want equity we need to have longer lengths of stay for tourists”, he added. (kmb32)

Bangli. There are 319 evacuees at the SKB Kayuamba evacuation post, and 434 in Kubu Many evacuees are feeling safe to go home, though Sutapa added that his agency never recommends that people from villages inside the 6 kilometer radius to go home and anyone wanting to return home has to sign a statement of volition. Sutapa added that there are still

many people who were evacuated form areas outside of the 6 kilometer radius danger zone in Karangasem who are choosing to remain in the evacuation posts. “Indeed many people do not feel safe to go home, so they are allowed to stay in the evacuation post. How alcohol damages stem cell DNA and increases cancer risk

LONDON - Drinking alcohol produces a harmful chemical in the body which can lead to permanent genetic damage in the DNA of stem cells, increasing the risk of cancer developing, according to research published on Wednesday. Working with mice in a laboratory, British scientists used chromosome analysis and DNA sequencing to examine the genetic damage caused by acetaldehyde, a harmful chemical produced when the body processes alcohol. Their findings offered more detail about how alcohol increases the risk of developing 7 types of cancer, including common forms such as breast and bowel cancer. It also showed how the body seeks to defend against the damage alcohol can do. “Some cancers develop due to DNA damage in stem cells. While some damage occurs by chance, our findings suggest that drinking alcohol can increase the risk of this damage,” said Ketan Patel, a professor at the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology, who co-led the study. The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies alcohol as a Group 1 carcinogen, citing “convincing evidence” it causes cancer in humans. A study published in 2011 found that alcohol is responsible for around 4 percent of all cancer in Britain - equating to around 12,800 cases a year. In Wednesday’s study, published in the journal Nature, Patel’s team gave diluted alcohol to mice and then analyzed the effect on the animals’ DNA. They found that acetaldehyde can break and damage DNA within blood stem cells, permanently altering the DNA sequences within these cells. This is important, Patel said, because when healthy stem cells become faulty, they can give rise to cancerous cells. The researchers also looked at how the body tries to protect itself against damage caused by alcohol. The first line of defense is a group of enzymes called aldehyde dehydrogenases or ALDHs, Patel explained. These break down the acetaldehyde into acetate, which cells can then use as a source of energy. In the study, when mice lacking a critical ALDH enzyme were given alcohol, their DNA suffered four times as damage compared with mice with a properly functioning version of the enzyme. (rtr)

China’s Tiangong-1 space lab is not out of control - top Chinese engineer

BEIJING - China’s Tiangong-1 space station is not out of control and does not pose a safety threat, a top Chinese spaceflight engineer said on Monday, after reports that the station was falling towards earth.

The Tiangong-1, or “Heavenly Palace 1”, China’s first space lab, was launched into orbit in 2011 to carry out docking and orbit experiments as part of China’s ambitious space programme, which aims to place a permanent station in orbit by 2023. Tiangong-1 was originally planned to be decommissioned in 2013 but China has repeatedly extended the length of its mission. The delay of re-entry into the earth’s atmosphere, which China said would happen in late 2017, had led some experts to suggest the space laboratory may be out of control. Zhu Congpeng, a top engineer at the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, told the state-backed Science and Technology Daily newspaper that the space station was not crashing and did not pose a safety

or environmental threat. “We have been continuously monitoring Tiangong-1 and expect to allow it to fall within the first half of this year,” Zhu told the newspaper. “It will burn up on entering the atmosphere and the remaining wreckage will fall into a designated area of the sea, without endangering the surface,” he said. Re-entry was delayed in September 2017 in order to ensure that the wreckage would fall into an area of the South Pacific ocean where debris from Russian and U.S. space stations had previously landed, the paper said. The California-based Aerospace Corporation, a non-profit group that works the U.S. government, said the Tiangong-1’s re-entry was unlikely to be controlled but was highly unlikely to hit people or damage property,

according to a post on its website last updated on Jan 3. “Although not declared officially, it is suspected that control of Tiangong-1 was lost and will not be regained before re-entry,” it said. There may be hazardous material on board that could survive re-entry, it said. Advancing China’s space programme is a priority for President Xi Jinping, who has called for China to become a global space power with both advanced civilian space flight and capabilities that strengthen national security. Beijing insists that its space programme is for peaceful purposes, but the U.S. Defense Department has said China’s programme could be aimed at blocking adversaries from using space-based assets during a crisis. Tourist boats forced to anchor at revetment of Terunyan Cemetery

BANGLI -Tourist boats have been forced to dock at the Terunyan Cemetery revetment in Kintamani because the pier at the tourist attraction of Terunyan village has become severely damaged. Despite the fact that the pier has been damaged for some time, the local government has yet to take any steps to fix the pier. Headman of Terunyan village, Wayan Arjana, admitted on Sunday (Jan 7) that the pier in Terunyan village has been damaged for some time. He explained that the damaged

has been caused by the rising water of Lake Batur and the porous old wood that the pier is made of. “The wood is so old that it has become porous and sunk into the lake”, he explained.

Tourists visiting Terunyan Village therefor have to be picked up and dropped off using the revetment in front of the cemetery. Arjuna however said that so far there have not

been any complaints from tourists. “So far I have not heard any complaints from guests from boat owners or and rowing groups”, he said. When asked about efforts to repair the damaged pier, Arjana said that so far he has not received any information about the government’s repair plan. As previously reported, The gov-

ernment of the district of Bangli has suspended their plans to make repairs to a number of piers on Lake Batur due to budgetary constraints. This evidence is worth IDR 1,317,780,000 (each gram is estimated to be worth IDR 1.8 million). There were also four suspects related to this case who were arrester on Thursday (Jan 4.). Ni Luh Putu Mega Karisma, 25, and Riantoni Akbar, 27 were arrested on Jalan Majapahit, Kuta, and Dedik Supramono, 32, and Edwin Ardiansah, 26, were arrested on Jalan Kebo Iwa Selatan Gang Nangka, West Denpasar. Allegedaly the illicit goods hasd been sent by an inmate from Madiun Prison, East Java. Spokesperson of Bali Police, Hengky Widjaja, accompanied

by Deputy Directorate of Drug Investigation, Sudjarwoko, said on Friday (Jan. 5) that one of the suspects who was arrested was a housewife. The disclosure of this case began with an investigation by Directorate of Narcotic Investigation Unit and CTOC through which they obtained information that there would be a large delivery of illicit drugs form outside Bali. On Thursday (Jan. 4) at 20:30 Local Time, police arrested the suspect Mega in front of her boarding room on Jalan Majapahit, Kuta that was then searched. Inside a stuffed toy monkey, the police found 6 packages of crystal meth weighing 605.4 grams gross. “The suspect admitted to having obtained the illicit goods from a courier who had received the goods from an

inmate of Madiun Prison”, said Sudjarwoko. The police officers continued their investigation. Suspect Marga claimed to be handing the illicit goods over to Akbar whose boarding house is on Jalan Darmawangsa, South Kuta, Badung. A hour later , the police arrived at Akbar’s place where they arrested Akbar and confiscated evidence including a bong, four bundles of plastic clipsa, scales, ATM cards and a handphone. Based on this evidence it appeared that the crystal meth from Marga was to be divided into several packages. “Both suspects have their respective roles. Mg (Mega) was in charge of picking up and carrying the packages of illicit goods, while Akbar was in charge of keeping watch”, said Sudjarwoko. (kmb36)

GIANYAR — Rabies in Gianyar district cannot be totally resolved. This is influenced by people paying less attention to this matter. He said the handling is influenced by the community. “For example, the dog case at Buruan (the first case in 2018—Ed) has asked for vaccination, but when the officers came, the house was closed,” he said. According to Raka, if the dog owner has an initiative, he can bring the dog directly to the office of agriculture to ask for vaccination. He also regretted the behavior of people who have not implemented a government appeal. “In accordance with the SOP we often talk about, firstly, if there is a bite, rush to look for Anti Rabies Vaccine (VAR). The dog must be tied. But in this case, many dogs are still left to roam around,” he explained. Not only that, the movement of dogs from one area to another is also prohibited in accordance with the circular of the Bali provincial government. “If people are not aware of it, it’s difficult. Our officers have disseminated, and even yesterday (Saturday—Ed) they stayed up until one o’clock in the morning to take care of the dog movement at Candi Baru,” he said. Raka said the rabies dog bite case has occurred for two times in early January 2018. His agency will still monitor the development. “The bite victim is the dog owner. Raka also urged people of Gianyar to be aware of the dangers of rabies and discipline about dog handling. “To be honest, Gianyar is ranked seventh. It’s quite good compared to other districts. However, we should not be complacent. If possible, we try to equally achieve zero case (like Denpasar and Klungkung—Ed),” he added. As reported earlier, at the beginning of this year, a positive rabies dog case was found at Buruan village, Blahbatuh. Moreover, the dog owner, Ketut Catur Udaya, 54, and his wife Sang Ayu Sumargi, 53, were bitten before the dog died on Tuesday afternoon (Jan. 2). The livestock officer under the Gianyar Agriculture Agency moved quickly to handle it, including doing selective elimination to dogs around Buruan village. (kmb)

With her husband and three of her five children, Karya has been at the Manggis Art Market refugee post since the eruption was first announced on November 26. This mother of two children from Subagan, Karangasem, came on Sunday (Jan. 7)

Rescue crews struggle to tame China oil tanker fire; crew still missing

BEIJING - Rescue crews scrambled to bring a blaze on an Iranian oil tanker off China’s east coast under control on Monday as fire raged for a second day following a collision with a grain ship, while the U.S. Navy joined the search for 32 missing crew. Concerns were growing that the tanker, which hit a freight ship on Saturday night in the East China Sea, may explode and sink as the inferno grew, the official China Central Television (CCTV) said on Monday, citing experts on the rescue team. The extent of the environmental harm and size of the oil spill from the ship were not known, but the disaster has the potential to be the worst since 1991 when 260,000 tonnes of oil leaked off the Angolan coast. The U.S. Navy sent a military aircraft to assist with the search, which spanned an area of about 3,600 square nautical miles (12,350 sq kms), but said in a statement it did not locate any of the tanker’s missing crew members. As of 8 a.m. (0000 GMT), the

search team had not found any of the missing mariners, CCTV said at midday on Monday. KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia’s opposition coalition on Sunday named 92-year old former premier Mahathir Mohamad as its prime ministerial candidate for a general election that must be called by August. With the country’s most popular opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim in jail, Mahathir is seen as the biggest threat for Prime Minister Najib Razak, who is engulfed in a corruption scandal. Mahathir, who earned a reputation during his 22-year tenure as prime minister of being a nononsense authoritarian with little time for dissenters promoting liberal values, stands to become the world’s oldest leader if the opposition wins. A victory could also potentially pave the way for former Mahathir foe Anwar to become the prime minister. Mahathir and Anwar’s wife Wan Azizah Wan Ismail will be the Pakatan Harapan coalition’s candidates for the premier and deputy prime ministerial posts respectively, secretary general Saifuddin Abdullah said at the alliance’s convention. If the opposition wins, the component parties have agreed to immediately commence the legal processes to obtain a royal pardon for Anwar, Saifuddin said. “...So that Anwar could immediately play a role in the federal government and subsequently be proposed as a candidate for the eighth prime minister,” he said. Najib’s Barisan Nasional coalition lost the popular vote in that election, but managed to stay in power after winning a majority of the seats in parliament. Anwar was again convicted in 2014 for sodomy, a charge he says was an attempt to end his career, and jailed a year later after failing to overturn the verdict. The sodomy conviction disqualifies Anwar from political office and from contesting the next election. A royal pardon, however, would let him contest. COLOMBO - Sri Lanka aims to raise $500 million this month via development bonds and is in the process of divesting two stateowned hotels, the central bank and a ministry said on Monday, as the government faces unprecedented debt repayment this year. Sudan bread protests spread, opposition leader detained

KHARTOUM - Protests over rising bread prices broke out in Sudan’s capital and spread across cities to the south on Sunday, witnesses said, as authorities arrested a prominent opposition leader and confiscated newspapers in a drive to curb growing unrest. The demonstrations followed a similar protest in the southeastern city of Sennar on Saturday, after bread prices doubled in recent days following a government announcement late last month that it was eliminating subsidies in its 2018 budget. In the southeastern city of al-Damazin, police fired tear gas on Sunday as about 400 demonstrators chanted “No, no to price rises!” and some burned tyres, a local resident told Reuters. The removal of subsidies is part of austerity measures as the country struggles in the face of inflation running at about 25 percent and an acute shortage of hard currency that has sapped import activity. Sudan has seen sporadic public protests in the past few years against austerity measures. In 2013, up to 185 people may have been killed, according to Amnesty International, during demonstrations against fuel price increases when thousands took to the streets. Protests since then have been much smaller and the main opposition parties have called for peaceful demonstrations against the bread price hikes. Protests spread to downtown Khartoum on Sunday as well as three cities to the south; the southwestern cities of Nyala and Geneina; as well as al-Damazin, residents in these areas told Reuters. Authorities arrested Omar Al-Dageir, the president of one of the country’s largest opposition groups, the Sudanese Congress Party, party members said. Authorities also blocked the sale of six daily newspapers carrying critical coverage of the subsidy cut and price rises, editors of the papers told Reuters. The ministry of interior could not be reached for comment. Sudan has begun a series of economic reforms in line with International Monetary Fund recommendations to try and get the economy back on track, months after a U.S. decision to lift sanctions raised hopes that badly needed investment may return. This month Sudan devalued its pound currency to 18 per U.S. dollar, more than double its previous peg of 6.7 pounds to the dollar. BENGKULU - Two Chinese men were detained by the Bengkulu Immigration Office on grounds of working illegally at the Teluk Sepang Steam Power Plant. “Two workers from China have been questioned in connection with valid documents,” Bengkulu Immigration Office`s spokesperson Markus Lenggo noted here on Monday. The two Chinese nationals were arrested during an impromptu inspection conducted by the Manpower Department of Bengkulu City on Friday (Jan 5) to check the foreign workers` status at the steam power plant`s site. The status of the two Chinese men had yet to confirmed, as apparently some Chinese

citizens working at the power plant were officially listed, Lenggo noted. Earlier, Head of the Bengkulu City Manpower Department Munarwan Syaiful noted that the two Chinese men were caught while cutting iron at the project`s site and had failed to present the necessary documents. “They were hired by PT Sinohydro that is involved in the construction of the steam power plant,” he noted. JAKARTA - An Indonesian woman, detained after the discovery of a newborn infant in an aircraft toilet at Jakarta`s international airport, was not identified as a documented migrant worker, an official stated on Monday. Director of Indonesian Citizens Protection of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Lalu Muhammad Iqbal remarked here on Monday that the woman believed to be the mother of the ill-fated baby was not on the list of legal Indonesian migrant workers. “Her name was not found in the database of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Agency of the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers,” Iqbal noted, confirming that the woman was a non-procedural worker. cal police suspected that the 37-year-old woman secretly gave birth during a flight from Abu Dhabi to Jakarta on Saturday. The woman was reportedly ill during the Etihad flight and forced the pilot to divert the flight to Bangkok. The flight departed for Jakarta around an hour later without the sick woman, who flew home on a later flight. The dead newborn was not found until the flight arrived at Jakarta`s International Airport Soekarno-Hatta on Saturday. The airport`s ground cleaners found the baby wrapped in a plastic bag in a drawer in one of the aircraft`s toilets. The cause of death had yet to be determined. Misfiring Real Madrid at a loss to explain their slump

BARCELONA - Real Madrid are consistently misfiring and they don’t know what to do about it. The reigning Spanish and European champions, 16 points behind La Liga leaders Barcelona after a 2-2 draw at Celta Vigo on Sunday, are on the brink of crisis. Fourth in the table and thrashed 3-0 by arch-rivals Barca before Christmas, Real have virtually no chance of retaining the league title and more trouble lies ahead. Madrid’s bid to win the Champions League for a third season running depends on overcoming big-spending Paris St Germain in the last 16, a tall order for a side playing as poorly as Zinedine Zidane’s men. Barcelona, meanwhile, have strengthened by signing Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool while Atletico have added Chelsea striker Diego Costa and Sevilla’s Vitolo to their ranks. Defender Marcelo believes Madrid are doing everything they can to turn their season around. “We started the (Celta Vigo) match running and fighting, but that’s football. We can’t do any more than that,” he told reporters. “We’re doing what we can, trying to play good football, score goals, but it is not working out. We have to face this, go out there and run. There’s no other way.” Zidane acknowledged that his team are in trouble but cannot put his finger on why. “I have to detect the problem because I am responsible,” the French coach said. “And I’ll try and we will try.” Unusually for a club with such attacking riches, goals have been a major problem this season and no player has scored more than four in La Liga. Cristiano Ronaldo has 15 netted goals in all competitions but has been a shadow of his former self. Madrid’s team is set up around providing the Portuguese forward with chances but in La Liga he has scored a modest four times in 13 appearances. Gareth Bale has the same tally in seven games and the Welshman netted both Madrid goals against Celta Vigo on a sour night for the champions from which they were lucky to emerge with a point. Based on performances there is an argument for Madrid’s tactical approach to be structured around Bale, but Zidane cannot rely on the injury-prone winger to stay fit. Real’s squad was weakened in the summer by the departures of striker Alvaro Morata to Chelsea and midfielder James Rodriguez to Bayern Munich while the players brought in have not convinced. Theo Hernandez and Dani Ceballos are two of the most promising young players in La Liga but Zidane appears unwilling to rely on them, preferring to stick with the tried and trusted. Cagliari apologise to Matuidi over alleged racist abuse

Juventus midfielder Blaise Matuidi said he was the subject of racial abuse during their 1-0 win at Cagliari on Saturday and the Sardinian club later apologised to the Frenchman. The alleged incident happened days after fellow Serie A side Verona were sanctioned after their supporters directed similar abuse towards the same player. “Today I experienced racism during the match. Weak people try to intimidate with hate. I am not a hater and can only be sorry for those who set bad examples,” Matuidi wrote on his official Facebook account. “Football is a way to spread equality, passion and inspiration and this is what I am here for. Peace.” Italian media said that Matuidi complained to match officials during the game but no action was taken.

“You are a great player. An example to the youth,” Cagliari said in a reply to Matuidi on Twitter. “We want to apologise to you if you were insulted at the Sardegna Arena because of the colour of your skin. Racism has nothing to do with the Sardinian people. Only ignorance can explain certain behaviour.
