LOS ANGELES - As “Star Wars” fans gear up for “The Last Jedi,” the anticipated next installment in the Skywalker series, its star and writer-director shed some light on how the franchise was mapping a future beyond the beloved characters. Rian Johnson, writer-director of “The Last Jedi,” will be overseeing a new trilogy of “Star Wars” films that will explore far-away corners of the galaxy, Walt Disney Co said in November. “I’m just in the very beginning phases of coming up with it so right now the sky is kind of the limit,” Johnson said while promoting “The Last Jedi” last week. “The appeal of it to me is to do a new story told over three movies, to have that kind of canvas, to be in the Star Wars world and to have the feel of a Star Wars film,” he said. The new stories will not follow the Skywalker saga, which George Lucas kicked off with 1977’s “Episode IV: A New Hope.” Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2012 for $4 billion, and rebooted the “Star Wars” franchise with the Skywalker trilogy and standalone films like “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” Johnson’s “The Last Jedi” picks up the Skywalker story after 2015’s blockbuster “The Force Awakens,” in which a new generation of characters was introduced with returning favorites Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) and Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). Sean Combs leads four black artists as world’s highest paid musicians
LOS ANGELES - Rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs was ranked the world’s highest-paid musician on Wednesday in an annual list that saw black artists take the top four spots. Combs, who is also a hip hop producer and entrepreneur, earned an estimated $130 million for the year, according to Forbes, mostly from his Bad Boy Family Reunion tour and the sale of his Sean Jean clothing line. Fellow American Beyonce ranked
second, with earnings estimated at $105 million from her Formation world tour and hit album “Lemonade,” while Canadian artists Drake ($94 million) and The Weeknd ($92 million) rounded out the top four. British band Coldplay pulled in an estimated $88 million to take the No. 5 spot. Forbes compiled the list after estimating pre-tax income for the 12 months from June 2016 to 2017 based
on interviews with managers, agents, lawyers, interviews and data from Pollstar, the Recording Industry Association of America and tracking firm Nielsen. Last year’s top two artists - Taylor Swift, and British boy band One Direction - both slipped out of the top 10 this year. Indonesia fights “extraordinary” diphtheria outbreak
JAKARTA - Indonesian health authorities will launch an immunisation drive next week to contain a sharp rise in cases of diphtheria, which has killed at least 32 people, including many children, in the world’s fourth most populous country this year. The health ministry said at least 591 cases had been reported since January, a 42 percent increase from last year, and called the outbreak an “extraordinary event”. “We have seen an acceleration in cases compared to last year ... We are implementing an immunisation programme to prevent a pandemic,” said Dr Mohamad Subuh, director general of disease prevention and control, at the ministry. The ministry recorded 415 cases and 24 deaths last year. Indonesia has among the world’s highest rates of diphtheria - along with India and sub-Saharan African countries - even though vaccinations have helped minimise global
cases over the past 30 years. The World Health Organisation recorded about 7,000 cases around the world last year. In 1980, the figure was 100,000. Diphtheria is a bacterial infection that spreads through close physical contact or through the air and can be fatal. Symptoms include fever and a sore throat, and the airway can sometimes become blocked. None of those affected in Indonesia had been vaccinated against the disease. The rise in cases
was attributed to several reasons, including some people rejecting vaccinations and a lack of access to healthcare, Subuh said. GIANYAR —The Ngerebeg traditional ritual took place in Tegallalang village on Sunday (Dec 6) as part of the piodalan (temple anniversary) of Duur Bingin Temple. Hundreds of children got dressed up in array of styles as part of an activity that aims to ask for the protection of God. Starting at around 11:00 on Wednesday morning, young boys filled Duur Bingin Temple in preparation for the ngerebeg ritual by praying, asking for sacerd food (rice and lawar) and eating together (megibung). Children dressed in ornaments made of young coconut leaves and sugar palm leaf, carried lelontek, kober (sacred flags) and penjor (bamboo poles) and special penjor made of snake-fruit tree trunks, walked around Tegallalang village, covering some 10 km. “This ritual is meant to neutralize all the negative influences existing in the customary village of Tegallalang. Adults and children dress up to look scary” explained chief of Tegallalang customary village, I Made Jaya Kusuma, amid the ritual preparations on Wednesday. Chief Kusuma explained that this ritual is held one day before the temple festival at Duur Bingin Temple that is held evey 210 days on Pegat Uwakan or Buda Kliwon Pahang. (Balinese calendar). All seven hamlets of Tegallalang village Gagah, Pejeng Aji, Tegallalang, Tegal, Tengah, Penusuan and Tri Wangsa, take part in this ceremony. He went on to explained that the ngerebeg ritual is preceded with a pacaruan (exorcism rite) at Duur Bingin Temple. After the pacaruan, the villagers present paica alit offerings and then the villagers ritually request special food consisting of rice served with lawar that is enjoyed by everyone in the temple courtyard. “Afterwards, Durr Bingin Tmeple’s sanctified effigies are paraded around the village by people (mostly children and young men) wearing scary costumes”, said Chief Kusuma. During the ngerebeg procession, the adults present offerings at all the temples and at the cemetery before returning to Duur Bingin Temple. Many people including tourists and shop keepers enjoyed watching the ritual procession. Whether they intended to or not the onlookers enjoyed witnessing this unique procession that takes place every six months. (kmb35)

Former headman of Sanur Kaja, I.B. Ketut Kiana, said on Wednesday (Dec. 6) that as a tourist destination, Sanur is different than other pasts of Bali. Sanur pioneered tourism on the island, and still remains free of excessive development including things like discotheques and the like that hare such a bog part of tourism elsewhere. “ Sanur emphasizes comfort and tranquility and thus attracts older tourists, especially form Europe”, said Kiana. Sanur is known more for quality than quantity and the white sandy beach with soft waves exemplifies this. It is difficult however for Sanur to maintain its image with the emergence of so many foreign owned villas. The city hotel with
cheap room rates that have been cropping up are also a problem. “City hotels are not suitable for the Sanur tourist destination. This is our challenge ahead”, he said. Member of the Bali House of Representatives, I.B. Gede Udiyana from Sanur said that his village is facing many challenges in maintaining itself as a leading tourist destination. One of thees challenges is of course the recent volcanic activity of Mount Agung. The tourism sector relies on safety and comfort. Despite being temporary this event has destabilized the tourism sector. The government along with other stakeholders, he said need to sit together and formulate a grand design for the
sustainability of Sanur tourism. “If this problem is not taken seriously, a greater threat will be inevitable. Many tourism sector employees could be laid in the near future. The government needs to take strategic steps immediately”, explained this former Chairman of the Sanur Development Foundation and former Chairman of Commission B of the Denpasar Parliament. The government, said Udiyana can for example, do more vigorous promotion of the area and pack their calendar of event with more competitive activities. Trendsetters: South African mothers do business with fashion cast-offs
JOHANNESBURG - Juggling paperwork, car keys and an always-beeping cellphone, Inet Situole, a 33-year-old in a crisp white blouse, runs a fashion boutique with more than 100 customers a month – a far cry from a decade ago, when she worked as a maid while trapped in an abusive marriage. Despite working seven days a week cleaning and cooking in an attempt to save some money, at the end of the month Situole would invariably find herself with nothing. “My husband would take all the money and spend it,” she told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. He also beat her and was unfaithful, she said. When she left him, Situole - an orphan since birth - was terrified of what lay ahead for her and her toddler. “I felt like dying,” she said. “I didn’t have anyone to run to.” But in 2015, her prospects were transformed after she joined a scheme to help unemployed mothers set up their own businesses. The Clothing Bank (TCB) was launched in 2010 in Cape Town by two businesswomen, Tracey Chambers and Tracey Gilmore. Gilmore started out by giving unemployed friends smart outfits to wear to job interviews - but it wasn’t working. “While sourcing the clothing was quite easy, finding opportunities for the women to get employment was really non-existent,” she said. At about 28 percent, South Africa’s unemployment rate is among the highest in the world. Lack of education is a key barrier to finding work, with less than a third of South Africans completing secondary school, according to a 2011 census. Chambers and Gilmore decided to combine business and entrepreneurship training with clothing to create a venture that could help tackle joblessness among mothers. More than a third of South Africa’s households are run by single mothers, a 2015 study by Statistics South Africa showed. “We’ve always believed that if you influence and change a mother’s life, you change an entire family,” said Tracy-Leigh Kinsey who runs TCB’s Johannesburg branch. “You change generations - and that’s why we focus specifically on mothers with dependent children.” BUSINESS IDEAS Once selected, the women follow a two-year programme that allows them to study and earn a living at the same time. “There was a huge amount of excess clothing stock in the retail supply chain,” Gilmore said. “That’s how we came up with the idea of using (it) as a tool to teach unemployed women to run businesses.” The women buy the surplus clothing - customer returns or endof-season merchandise - at discounted prices from TCB, setting up small fashion businesses and growing them as they make a profit. After the training, women are free to apply their new skills in any sector, Kinsey said. (rtr)

LONDON - The fashion industry urgently needs to reform its wasteful, polluting ways, British designer Stella McCartney and record-breaking sailor Ellen MacArthur said on Tuesday. With global clothing sales doubling since 2000, people now wear each item far fewer times, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation said, calling for items ranging from T-shirts to jeans to be designed differently and reused more. The charity, established in 2010, has pioneered a shift toward a “circular economy” in which raw materials and products are repeatedly reused to reduce waste and pollution. “Fashion is allowed to be fun, and it’s allowed to be sexy,” said McCartney, daughter of the Beatles’ Paul McCartney. “The reality is we just need to be a bit more mindful and curious about the way we’re consuming and have a level of responsibility,” she said. The fashion industry is worth about $2.4 trillion a year, according to the global consultancy McKinsey.
The equivalent of one garbage truck of textiles is wasted every second, and less than 1 percent of clothing is recycled into new clothes, MacArthur’s foundation said in a report. “The trajectory for the textiles industry is catastrophic if it continues in this way,” MacArthur told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. “We need to radically change the way that clothing is designed, used, made and recovered so that we end up with a system that is restorative and regenerative,” she said. If nothing changes, the fashion industry will consume a quarter of the world’s annual carbon budget by 2050, it said, referring to the emissions the world can make while keeping the global temperature rise at no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius. Fashion must abandon its “takemake-dispose” model, where unwanted clothes are sent to landfill
sites or incinerated, and start using non-polluting materials that are designed to last and could save the industry $500 billion, it said. The report presents a roadmap for creating better businesses and more innovative solutions, said McCartney, a long-time vegetarian who does not use leather, PVC or fur in her clothing. Textile production emits 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases annually, more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined, the report said. Clothes also release half a million tonnes of plastic microfibres into the ocean every year, equivalent to more than 50 billion plastic bottles, it said. Several major brands said they support the initiative, including Swedish fashion retailer H&M and sports giant Nike. “(It) is aligned with our efforts in making sure that economic and social development can happen in a way that the planet can afford,” H&M’s chief executive Karl-Johan Persson said in a statement. DENPASAR — Since the eruption of Mount Agung, Bali’s oldest tourist destination – Sanur, has seen occupancy rates plummet to an average of 10-12 percent. Chairman of the Regional Tourism Promotion Board (BPPD) Denpasar, I.B. Gede Sidharta Putra, when contacted on Tuesday (Dec. 5) said that the impact of Mount Agung’S eruption is even worse than the impact of the second Bali bomb when occupancy rates
remained around 30 percent and above. “Many hotel owners are worried as occupancy rates need to be in the range of 40-45 percent in order to cover operating costs”, said Sidharta Putra who is also Chairman of PHRI Denpasar and the Sanur Development Foundation.
In order to mitigate losses, tourism businesses in Sanur having started to implement measures such as scheduling holidays for their staff, so that they do not have to lay them off. Electricity and water are also being used more efficiently. “ We have started cutting water off and turned off all light for rooms that are not being used”, he said. Many are concerned that if con-
ditions persists for long that there will be layoffs which would then impact several sectors including farmers. “ We do not know how long this situation will last as it depends on nature”, said Sidharta. Previously, the Head of the Denpasar Tourism Office, Maria Antonia Dezire Mulyani, when met in the mayoral office said the eruption of Mount Agung certain affected tourism in Denpasar –
especially when the airport was closed. “ Inevitably this had an impact”, he said. “We continuously collect data in the number of visitors to Denpasar and there was a marled decrease after Mount Agung erupted. We have been in contact with both the Bali Toiursim Board and the Minsitry of tourism about mitigating the impact of the eruption”, explained Dezire. (kmb12)
Monkey Forest Ubud takes advantage of lack of visitors GIANYAR — Many tourism operators are complaining about the ongoing uncertainty of Mount Agung. However such complaints will not change the reality that there are fewer tourists visiting Bali now. Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary Ubud however is taking a different approach. “ With such few visitors it is easier for us to make improvements to this tourist attractions. When there are a lot of visitors it is hard to do renovations”, said GM of Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary Ubud, Nyoman Buana, on Tuesday (Dec. 5). Although renovations had been scheduled since 2016, they were delayed several times due to the large number of visitors. Repairs to be made include reforesting the former parking area and creating new trails for people with disabilities. “Given current conditions, we have an opportunity to work maximally. So, once Mount Agung returns to normal, we will be ready to welcome tourists”, he said. Buana revealed that normally Monkey Forest Ubud receives 4,000-5,000 visitors per day. “ Last December we had even more than that – the place was packed”, he
said. However, since the eruption of Mount Agung and the subsequent closure Ngurah Rai International Airport, there are far fewer visitors. “Currently, we are still receiving visitors but on our quietness day last week there were only 1,008 visitors”, added Buana. Most of the tourists who have cancelled their visits, are those who arranged their trips through travel agencies. Independent travellers have mostly kept ot their original travel schedule. “ SO, people who come to Bali on their own are still enjoying visiting Bali”, he said. Nyoman Buana added that many tourists are well versed in the fact that Mount Agung is located some 51 km from Ubud and 67 km frm Ngurah Rai Airport. “ The disaster –prone area is only a 12km radius from the crater of Mount Agung, this is far away”, he said. Buana is therefore confident that there will continue to be tourists visiting Bali at this end of year period. “ We estimate that are still 4,000 visitors arriving throughout airport everyday, and about 25 percent of them will visit Ubud – especially Monkey Forest”, he added. TABANAN — Since Mount Agung began to erupt, there has been a decline in tourist arrivals, especially foreign tourists at some tourist destinations like Tanah Lot. This can be seen from the data where the visit of foreign tourists almost decreased by 50 percent. Operations Manager of Tanah Lot attraction, Ketut Toya Adnyana, said on Wednesday (Dec. 6) the decrease of foreign tourists visit is also accompanied with the decrease of the visit in the whole. Data of the past week indicated the decrease in foreign tourists at least reaches 50 percent. By and large, the tourist visit to Tanah Lot is dominated by foreign tourists, while the current visit is dominated by domestic tourists. Data on the tourist visit for one week are as follows: on Monday (Nov. 27) total visit reached 5,070
people consisting of 3,598 foreign tourists and 1,472 domestic tourists. On Tuesday (Nov. 28) total visit amounted to 4,792 people consisting of 3,195 foreign tourists and 1,597 domestic tourists. On Wednesday (Nov. 29) the visit downed to 3,172 people consisting of 2,131 foreign tourists and 1,041 domestic tourists and on Thursday (Nov. 30) the visit amounted to 2,365 people consisting of 1,306 foreign tourists 1,059 domestic tourists. Entering the long holiday on Friday (Dec. 1) the visit rose again to 5,720 dominated by domestic
tourist reaching 4,749 people and 971 foreign tourists. Similarly, on Saturday (Dec. 2) the visit went up again to 6,313 people consisting of 5505 domestic tourists and 943 foreign tourists. While on Sunday (Dec. 3) the visit reached 6,033 people consisting of 5,090 domestic tourists and 943 foreign tourists. Then, the visit dropped dramatically on Monday (Dec. 4) to 2319 people consisting of 1,412 domestic tourists and 907 foreign tourists. Toya explained that overall, tourist visit during December 2017
indeed much decreases when compared to the same month in previous years. He added when entering December, the average visit usually reaches 8,000 people. Until now, the average visit only reached 5,000 to 6,000 people. In addition to decline, there is a change in the dominance of visit where foreign tourist usually dominated the visit but currently domestic tourists are recorded the most in the past week. Toya explained the decline is caused by the warning of several countries advising not to visit Bali first due to the eruption of Mount Agung. However, since it is a natural disaster and experienced throughout Bali, his management will certainly
take steps to attract tourists, especially domestic tourists. “Currently the most potential is domestic tourists. So, we are preparing a program to attract domestic tourists to visit Tanah Lot,” said Toya. However, the target of tourist visit in 2017 alone, he said, has been exceeded. In 2017, the management targeted to reach 2,800,000 visitors. So far, it has reached 3,250,000 visitors. Nevertheless, this figure still does not exceed the achievement in 2016 reaching approximately 3,500,000 visitors. “In general, the target of tourist visit has been achieved but this year has not exceeded the number of tourist visit in 2016,” added Toya. In addition to introducing the potential of bicycle tours and sports in Bangli districts, this event aims to promote to tourists that Bangli and Bali in general remains very safe to be visited even though Mount Agung currently shows increasing activities. yani, said on Wednesday (Dec. 6) that Batur Enduro Challenge features the theme of Kintamani Enduro Bike to Nature. This cycling event will take the route along approximately 6 km. After starting at the Batur Geopark Museum, the cyclists will pass the Jalan Raya Suter-Besakih route, then going down to the Batur caldera through the forest at Buahan village area. After taking rest for a while Resto Apung, the journey continues to Toya Bungkah.
She explained that Batur Enduro Challenge is also filled with soft launching of Kintamani Bike Park and Toya Bungkah Cultural Stage in Batur UNESCO Global Geopark. “This activity is a joint initiative, financed by district government of Bangli, organized in collaboration with Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) Bali, Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources,” he explained.
Desak Andariyani added that according to schedule, the Batur Enduro Challenge on Sunday (Dec. 10) will start around 07:00. This activity is expected to have a positive impact on tourism in Bangli and Bali in general, especially amid the condition of Mount Agung experiencing increased activity. “In terms of radius, Bangli and other areas are outside the radius of disaster-prone area (KRB) III and II and remain very safe for tourists to make a visit,” he explained. Australia celebrates “day for love” as it allows same-sex marriage
SYDNEY - Australia became the 26th nation to legalise same-sex marriage on Thursday, prompting cheers and singing from a packed parliament public gallery in a country where some states ruled homosexual acts to be illegal until just 20 years ago. Lawmakers, who had cast aside a conservative push to allow religious objectors to refuse service to same-sex couples, waved rainbow flags and embraced on the floor of the chamber, after the overwhelming vote in favour of the bill. JEJU - The art of Neapolitan pizza making won world heritage status on Thursday, joining a horse-riding game from Iran and Dutch wind mills on UNESCO’s culture list. UNESCO accepted the art of Neapolitan “pizzaiuoli,” or pizza makers, on the world body’s list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. “Congratulations #Italy!” it said in a tweet after a meeting in Jeju, South Korea where the decision was made. Italy argued the practice of the “pizzaiuoli” - preparing and flipping the dough, topping it and baking it in a wood-fired oven - was part of the country’s cultural and gastronomic tradition. In Rome, pizzeria owner Romano Fiore celebrated the decision. “I am honoured, like all Italians and Neapolitans are... pizza has centuries of history,” he said. Archetypal Neapolitan pizza has a relatively thin crust with the exception of the rim, which, when baked, bloats like a tiny bicycle tyre. It is made in a wood-burning brick oven and has two classic versions: Marinara (tomato, garlic, oregano and oil) and, the most famous, Margherita (tomato, mozzarella, oil and basil), giving it the red, white and green colours of the Italian flag. Tradition holds that the Margherita pizza was created in 1889 by a local chef in honour of Queen Margherita, who was visiting Naples, south of Rome on Italy’s Tyrrhenian coast. As pizza has become a favourite dish around the world, foreign innovations in toppings have often left Italians perplexed and aghast. To defuse opposition, President Pablo Kuczynski has vowed to boost social services in rural highland areas, where nearly half of residents live in poverty. But moving from conflict to cooperation is not easy after centuries of mistrust. Relocations are particularly fraught, according to Camilo Leon, a mining resettlement specialist at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. Subsistence farmers have struggled to adapt to the loss of their traditions and the “very urban, very organized” layout of planned towns, Leon said. “It is generally a shock for rural communities,” Leon said. At least six proposed mines have required relocations in Peru in the past decade, Leon said. Later this month, Peru will tender a $2-billion copper project, Michiquillay, which would require moving yet another village. ‘EVERYTHING IS MONEY’ MMG inherited the Nueva Fuerabamba project when it bought Las Bambas from Switzerland’s Glencore Plc in 2014 for $7 billion. Under terms of a deal struck in 2009 and reviewed by Reuters, villagers voted to trade their existing homes and farmland for houses in a new community. Heads of each household, about 500 in all, were promised mining jobs. University scholarships would be given to their children. Residents were to receive new land for farming and
grazing, albeit in a parcel four hours away by car. Cash was an added sweetener. Villagers say each household got 400,000 soles ($120,000), which amounts to a lifetime’s earnings for a minimum-wage worker in Peru. MMG declined to confirm the payments, saying its agreements are confidential. Built into a hillside 15 miles from the Las Bambas mine, Nueva Fuerabamba was the product of extensive community input, MMG said. Amenities include a hospital, soccer fields and a cement bull ring for festivals. But some residents say the deal has not been the windfall they hoped. Their new two-and-three story houses, made of drywall, are drafty and appear flimsy compared to their old thatched-roof adobe cottages heated by wood-fired stoves, some said. Many no longer plant crops or tend livestock because their replacement plots are too far away. Jobs provided by MMG mostly involve maintaining the town because most residents lack the skills to work in a modern mine. Many villagers spent their settlements unwisely, said community president Alfonso Vargas. “Some invested in businesses but others did not. They went drinking,” he said. Now basics like water, food and fuel
- once wrested from the land - must be paid for. “Everything is money,” Margot Portilla, 20, said as she cooked rice on a gas stove in her sister-in-law’s bright-yellow home. “Before we could make a fire for cooking with cow dung. Now we have to buy gas.” GHOST TOWN Some residents said they have benefited from the move. The new town is cleaner than the old village, said Betsabe Mendoza, 25. She invested her settlement in a metalworking business in a bigger town. Portilla, the young mom, says her younger sisters are getting a better education than she did. Still, the streets of Nueva Fuerabamba were virtually deserted on a recent weekday. Vargas, the community leader, said many residents have returned to the countryside or sought work elsewhere. Alcoholism, fueled by idle time and settlement money, is on the rise, he said. Some villagers have committed suicide. Over the 12 months through July, four residents killed themselves by taking farming chemicals, according to the provincial district attorney’s office. It could not provide data on suicides in the old village of Fuerabamba. MMG, citing an “independent”
study done prior to the relocation, said the community previously suffered from high rates of domestic violence, alcoholism, illiteracy and poverty. While the company considers the new town a success, it acknowledged the transition has not been easy for all. “Connection to land, livelihood restoration and simple adaptation to new living conditions remain a challenge,” MMG said. Nueva Fuerabamba residents continue pressuring the company for additional assistance. Demands include more jobs and deeds to their houses, which have yet to be delivered because of bureaucratic delays, said Godofredo Huamani, the community’s lawyer. MMG said it stays apace of community needs through town hall meetings and has representatives on hand to field complaints. While villagers fret about the future, many cling to the past. Flora Huamani, 39, a mother of four girls, recalled how women used to get together to weave wool from their own sheep into the embroidered black dresses they wear. “Those were our traditions,” said Huamani from a bench in her walled front yard. “Now our tradition is meeting after meeting after meeting” to discuss the community’s problems.(rtr)

NUEVA FUERABAMBA - This remote town in Peru’s southern Andes was supposed to serve as a model for how companies can help communities uprooted by mining. Named Nueva Fuerabamba, it was built to house around 1,600 people who gave up their village and farmland to make room for a massive, open-pit copper mine. The new hamlet boasts paved streets and tidy houses with electricity and indoor plumbing, once luxuries to the indigenous Quechua-speaking people who now call this place home. The mine’s operator, MMG Ltd, the Melbourne-based unit of stateowned China Minmetals Corp, threw in jobs and enough cash so that some villagers no longer work. But the high-profile deal has not brought the harmony sought by villagers or MMG, a testament to the difficulty in averting mining disputes in this mineral-rich nation. Resource battles are common in Latin America, but tensions are particularly high in Peru, the world’s No. 2 producer of copper, zinc and silver. Peasant farmers have revolted against an industry that many see as damaging their land and livelihoods while denying them a fair share of the wealth. Peru is home to 167 social conflicts, most related to mining, according to the national ombudsman’s office, whose mission includes defusing hostilities. Nueva Fuerabamba was the centerpiece of one of the most generous mining settlements ever negotiated in Peru. But three years after moving in, many transplants are struggling amid their suburban-style conveniences, Reuters interviews with two dozen residents showed. Many miss their old lives growing potatoes and raising livestock. Some have squandered their cash settlements. Idleness and isolation have dulled the spirits of a people whose ancestors were feared cattle rustlers. “It is like we are trapped in a jail, in a cage where little animals are kept,” said Cipriano Lima, 43, a former farmer. Meanwhile, the mine, known as Las Bambas, has remained a magnet for discontent. Clashes between demonstrators and authorities in 2015 and 2016 left four area men dead. Nueva Fuerabamba residents have blocked copper transport roads to press for more financial help from MMG. As Jro Mangku Nurata explained, while officiating over a tutug kambuhan ritual recently, Nyambutin or nelubulanin (meaning 3 months) ceremonies are held for babies 105 days after they are born which is 3 months according to the Balinese calendar. God is asked to provide protection for the young human. Part of this ceremony includes giving the baby a name and clarifying the meaning of this name. Most notably this is the first time that the baby’s feet are allowed to touch the earth. “According to Hindu tradition, babies are only allowed to have their feet touch the ground once they are three months old as this is when they start being able to sit up by themselves”, explained Jro Mangku. The Nyambutin, ceremony said Jro Mangku is a way to welcome the baby into the world and show gratitude in a ritual called pangenteg bayu in which water is given to Mother Earth in the hopes that the baby is given a long life. The Nyambutin ceremony is classified as a Manusa Yadnya (rite of passage) ceremony and is carried out with the hope the baby and their family will be prosperous and have a good life. The baby’s placenta will usually have been buried in the family yard and it is in this same area that the nyambutin ceremony is held with the baby’s parents actively taking part in all the rituals involved. This ceremony is dedicated to Bhatara Surya (Lord of the Sun), Ibu Pertiwi (Mother Earth) and Bhatara-Bhatari (deities of the household), explained Jero Mangku Nurata. “The aim is to ask that the baby be guided and safeguarded”, he said. After East Ijogading block came to the overall champion last year, this year (2017) is the turn of the West Ijogading block to win the Jembrana Buffalo Race Cup 2017. The race was held at Sanghyang Cerik Circuit, Tuwed village, Melaya, Jembrana, on Sunday (Nov. 19) watched thousands of residents. Since early morning of the race day, thousands of buffalo racing enthusiasts have crowded the circuit. The jockeys were enthusiastic and eager to boost their buffaloes. After several hours of fighting, the West Ijogading became the champion of all three race categories as well as ahead of the East Ijogading block. West Ijogading managed to get totally 42 points and ahead of Ijogading Timur that only got totally 14 points. Automatically, the host won the overall champion and was entitled to get a trophy and cash prizes. Meanwhile, East Ijogading block as the second overall champion got cash prizes. The prize was given directly by Regent of Jembrana, I Putu Artha. Coordinator of Jembrana Buffalo Race (Makepung), I Made Mara, said that the Jembrana Buffalo Race Cup this time is followed by 157 pairs of buffalo from western block and 115 pairs from eastern block. Trump faces off with Democrats over potential U.S. government shutdown
WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump will face off with Democratic leaders of Congress on Thursday in a high-stakes White House meeting intended to bridge differences over a spending bill and prevent a government shutdown. U.S. House of Representatives Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer will join Trump and Republican congressional leaders for talks after canceling a similarly planned meeting last week when the president posted a disparaging note about them on Twitter. Trump and Congress are facing a deadline of midnight Friday to pass new spending legislation. If they cannot agree on the terms, parts of the federal government could shut down. Talks with Schumer and Pelosi, whom Trump has referred to as “Chuck and Nancy,” could be the start of a protracted blame game. The Republican president said on Wednesday that Democrats were looking at something “very dangerous” for the United States: “They are looking at shutting down.” Pelosi responded in a tweet that Trump was the only person talking about such a scenario. “Democrats are hopeful the president will be open to an agreement to address the urgent needs of the American people and keep government open,” she wrote. The meeting is scheduled for 3 p.m. (2000 GMT). The Republican-controlled House is expected to vote on Thursday on a bill that would keep the government open at current spending levels through Dec. 22 while lawmakers negotiate a longer-term solution. The legislation will include some short-term help for states running out of money to finance a health insurance program for lower-income children. Some conservative Republicans may oppose the spending bill on the grounds that the time period is too short and forces more crucial decisionmaking right before the holidays. But the measure is expected to pass the House and move to the Senate. The White House said Trump would sign the stopgap spending measure. Conservative House Republicans said their real focus was on what would happen next. Going forward, they favor legislation that would hold down spending levels for everything but defense, and they also want work requirements for able-bodied Medicaid recipients. Trump announced his administration would begin a process of moving the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, a step expected to take years and one that his predecessors opted not to take to avoid inflaming tensions. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who hailed Trump’s an-
nouncement as a “historic landmark”, said on Thursday many countries would follow the U.S. move and that contacts were underway. He did not name the countries he was referring to. “President Trump has immortalized himself in the chronicles of our capital. His name will now be held aloft, alongside other names connected to the glorious history of Jerusalem and of our people,” he said in a speech at Israel’s Foreign Ministry. Other close Western allies of Washington, including France and Britain, have been critical of Trump’s move. Pope Francis has called for Jerusalem’s status quo to be respected, while China and Russia have also expressed concern. Trump’s decision has raised doubts about his administration’s ability to follow through on a peace effort that Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, has led for months aimed at reviving long-stalled negotiations. The United Nations Security Council is likely to meet on Friday to discuss the U.S. decision, diplomats said. (rtr)
Major U.S. allies came out against Trump’s reversal of decades of U.S. and broad international policy on Jerusalem. France rejected the “unilateral” decision while appealing for calm in the region. Britain said the move would not help peace efforts and Jerusalem should ultimately be shared by Israel and a future Palestinian state. Germany said Jerusalem’s status could only be resolved on the basis of a two-state solution. Israel, by contrast, applauded Trump’s move. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a pre-recorded video message that it was “an important step towards peace” and it was “our goal from Israel’s first day”. He added that any peace accord with the Palestinians would have to include Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and he urged other countries to follow Trump’s example. Trump upended decades of U.S. policy in defiance of warnings from around the world that the gesture risks aggravating conflict in the tinderbox Middle East.
The status of Jerusalem is home to sites holy to the Muslim, Jewish and Christian faiths. Its eastern sector was captured by Israel in a 1967 war and annexed in a move not recognized internationally. Palestinians claim East Jerusalem for the capital of an independent state they seek. Israel deems Jerusalem its eternal and indivisible capital dating to antiquity, and its status is one of the thorniest barriers to a lasting Israeli-Palestinian peace. All Palestinian factions called for a general strike and protest rallies at midday on Thursday. “LEGALLY NULL” DECISION The Saudi Royal Court issued a statement saying that the kingdom followed “with deep sorrow” Trump’s decision and warned of “dangerous consequences of moving the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem”. The statement described the move as “a big step back in efforts to advance the peace process”, and urged the U.S. administration to reverse its decision and adhere to international will. Egypt, which forged the first Arab peace deal with Israel in 1979, brushed off Trump’s decision and said it did not change Jerusalem’s disputed legal status. Jordan said Trump’s action was “legally null” because it consolidated Israel’s occupation of East Jerusalem. Lebanese President Michel Aoun said Trump’s Jerusalem decision was dangerous and threatened the credibility of the United States as a broker of Middle East peace. He said the move would put back the peace process by decades and
threatened regional stability and perhaps global stability. Qatar’s foreign minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, said Trump’s undertaking was a “death sentence for all who seek peace” and called it “a dangerous escalation”. Turkey said Trump’s move was “irresponsible”.
“We call upon the U.S. Administration to reconsider this faulty decision which may result in highly negative outcomes and to avoid uncalculated steps that will harm the multicultural identity and historical status of Jerusalem,” the Turkish foreign ministry said in a statement.(rtr)

Putin says Russia won’t prevent athletes from competing in Pyeongchang
MOSCOW - Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Russia would not prevent its athletes from competing at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics if they wanted to, damping down calls from some Russians for a boycott of the Games. The IOC on Tuesday banned the Russian team from the Olympics after evidence emerged of an “unprecedented systematic manipulation” of the anti-doping system but left the door open for some Russians to compete as neutrals if they demonstrate they have a doping-free background. “Without any doubt, we will not declare a blockade, we will not prevent our Olympians from taking part (in the Games), if one of them wants to participate in a personal capacity,” Putin said on state television. In his first comments since the
ban, Putin took aim at Grigory Rodchenkov, the former head of Moscow’s anti-doping laboratory whose allegations of state-sponsored doping and a cover-up at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics triggered investigations that ultimately led to the IOC decision. Inter face test of title hopes at champions Juve
MILAN - Having ended Napoli’s unbeaten start to the league season last week, champions Juventus will try to do the same to Inter Milan when they host the Serie A leaders in a mouthwatering “Derby d’Italia” on Saturday. Inter were left as the only unbeaten team in the league after Juve won 1-0 last Friday away to a Napoli side which had not lost in the opening 14 games. The result last weekend also allowed Inter to go top with 39 points thanks to a 5-0 win over Chievo. Juventus, third with 37 points, will top the standings if they win on Saturday although Napoli (38 points) would overhaul them if they can beat an improving Fiorentina at home on Sunday. Whatever the outcome, it is already clear that Juventus, chasing a seventh successive title, have far more of a fight on their hands than in previous seasons where they often left the rest of the field trailing in their wake. It is also evident that reports of Juve’s demise have been premature. The cracks which appeared during a 2-1 loss to Lazio - Juve’s first home defeat in more than two years -- and a 3-2 defeat at Sampdoria have quickly been filled by their pragmatic coach Massimiliano Allegri. They have been especially resolute in defence and their 2-0 win away to Olympiakos on Tuesday,

Arsenal will not sell striker Olivier Giroud, midfielder Jack Wilshere and winger Theo Walcott in the January transfer window despite their lack of playing time at the Premier League club, manager Arsene Wenger has said. The trio have started a majority of the club’s Europa League and League Cup games this season but are yet to start a league match, with Giroud making 12 substitute appearances while Wilshere has been limited to four and Walcott to three. Their lack of top-flight action could cost them a spot in their respective nations’ 2018 World Cup squads but Wenger said the trio will not move away from the Emirates. “They have to make their decisions; I have to make mine,” Wenger told reporters on Wednesday. “I cannot consider too much the interest of the national team. I want to keep the squad. We do not want to become weaker. “I have to consider the interest of the player but dominant of that will be the interests of the club. If you can combine the two it is even better but, first, what is important is for the club.” England international Walcott has been at Arsenal for 11 years but is no longer a regular starter but Wenger has backed the 28-year-old to reclaim his spot. “He has it in him (to become a first-team regular),” Wenger added. “Of course he is frustrated

Independiente beat Flamengo 2-1 in Sudamericana first leg BUENOS AIRES - Independiente fell behind to an early goal but bounced back to beat Flamengo 2-1 at home in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final on Wednesday. The Argentine side will now go to Rio de Janeiro to defend a slim lead in next week’s return leg. Flamengo got off to an excellent start at the Libertadores de America stadium when captain Rever rose above the Independiente defence to head home a free kick from left back Miguel Trauco after just eight minutes. But the home side came more into the game as the first half progressed and after missing a couple of half chances they got the equaliser in 28 minutes when Emmanuel Gigliotti finished a sweeping counter attack by firing home from 12 yards. The Argentines, who had lost only two of their previous 22 Sudamericana ties at home, were the better side immediately after the break and they got the winner eight minutes into the second period thanks to a superb volley from Maximiliano Meza. The attacking midfielder met a cross from Ezequiel Barco with poise and power, and although Flamengo went all out for an equaliser, their final pass was either too slack or a home defender was on hand with a

MILAN - Having ended Napoli’s unbeaten start to the league season last week, champions Juventus will try to do the same to Inter Milan when they host the Serie A leaders in a mouthwatering “Derby d’Italia” on Saturday. Inter were left as the only unbeaten team in the league after Juve won 1-0 last Friday away to a Napoli side which had not lost in the opening 14 games. The result last weekend also allowed Inter to go top with 39 points thanks to a 5-0 win over Chievo. Juventus, third with 37 points, will top the standings if they win on Saturday although Napoli (38 points) would overhaul them if they can beat an improving Fiorentina at home on Sunday. If only seen from the highway, it will look like a palace because people will only see a magnificent palace filled with traditional ornaments. This gallery displays Cok Anom’s paintings and the works of other artists in Bali. Although the gallery is prepared for foreign tourists, local people are also allowed to see it. “We prepare a tourist attraction, so that all permits should have been met properly,” he said. Putin says Russia won’t prevent athletes from competing in Pyeongchang
MOSCOW - Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Russia would not prevent its athletes from competing at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics if they wanted to, damping down calls from some Russians for a boycott of the Games. The IOC on Tuesday banned the Russian team from the Olympics after evidence emerged of an “unprecedented systematic manipulation” of the anti-doping system but left the door open for some Russians to compete as neutrals if they demonstrate they have a doping-free background. “Without any doubt, we will not declare a blockade, we will not prevent our Olympians from taking part (in the Games), if one of them wants to participate in a personal capacity,” Putin said on state television. In his first comments since the
ban, Putin took aim at Grigory Rodchenkov, the former head of Moscow’s anti-doping laboratory whose allegations of state-sponsored doping and a cover-up at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics triggered investigations that ultimately led to the IOC decision. Trump faces off with Democrats over potential U.S. government shutdown
WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump will face off with Democratic leaders of Congress on Thursday in a high-stakes White House meeting intended to bridge differences over a spending bill and prevent a government shutdown. U.S. House of Representatives Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer will join Trump and Republican congressional leaders for talks after canceling a similarly planned meeting last week when the president posted a disparaging note about them on Twitter. Trump and Congress are facing a deadline of midnight Friday to pass new spending legislation. If they cannot agree on the terms, parts of the federal government could shut down. Talks with Schumer and Pelosi, whom Trump has referred to as “Chuck and Nancy,” could be the start of a protracted blame game. The Republican president said on Wednesday that Democrats were looking at something “very dangerous” for the United States: “They are looking at shutting down.” Pelosi responded in a tweet that Trump was the only person talking about such a scenario. “Democrats are hopeful the president will be open to an agreement to address the urgent needs of the American people and keep government open,” she wrote. The meeting is scheduled for 3 p.m. (2000 GMT). The Republican-controlled House is expected to vote on Thursday on a bill that would keep the government open at current spending levels through Dec. 22 while lawmakers negotiate a longer-term solution. The legislation will include some short-term help for states running out of money to finance a health insurance program for lower-income children. Some conservative Republicans may oppose the spending bill on the grounds that the time period is too short and forces more crucial decisionmaking right before the holidays. But the measure is expected to pass the House and move to the Senate. The White House said Trump would sign the stopgap spending measure. Conservative House Republicans said their real focus was on what would happen next. Going forward, they favor legislation that would hold down spending levels for everything but defense, and they also want work requirements for able-bodied Medicaid recipients. At least six proposed mines have required relocations in Peru in the past decade, Leon said. Later this month, Peru will tender a $2-billion copper project, Michiquillay, which would require moving yet another village. ‘EVERYTHING IS MONEY’ MMG inherited the Nueva Fuerabamba project when it bought Las Bambas from Switzerland’s Glencore Plc in 2014 for $7 billion. Under terms of a deal struck in 2009 and reviewed by Reuters, villagers voted to trade their existing homes and farmland for houses in a new community. Heads of each household, about 500 in all, were promised mining jobs. University scholarships would be given to their children. Residents were to receive new land for farming and
grazing, albeit in a parcel four hours away by car. Cash was an added sweetener. Villagers say each household got 400,000 soles ($120,000), which amounts to a lifetime’s earnings for a minimum-wage worker in Peru. MMG declined to confirm the payments, saying its agreements are confidential. Built into a hillside 15 miles from the Las Bambas mine, Nueva Fuerabamba was the product of extensive community input, MMG said. Amenities include a hospital, soccer fields and a cement bull ring for festivals. But some residents say the deal has not been the windfall they hoped. Their new two-and-three story houses, made of drywall, are drafty and appear flimsy compared to their old thatched-roof adobe cottages heated by wood-fired stoves, some said. Many no longer plant crops or tend livestock because their replacement plots are too far away. Jobs provided by MMG mostly involve maintaining the town because most residents lack the skills to work in a modern mine. Many villagers spent their settlements unwisely, said community president Alfonso Vargas. “Some invested in businesses but others did not. They went drinking,” he said. Now basics like water, food and fuel
- once wrested from the land - must be paid for. “Everything is money,” Margot Portilla, 20, said as she cooked rice on a gas stove in her sister-in-law’s bright-yellow home. “Before we could make a fire for cooking with cow dung. Now we have to buy gas.” GHOST TOWN Some residents said they have benefited from the move. The new town is cleaner than the old village, said Betsabe Mendoza, 25. She invested her settlement in a metalworking business in a bigger town. Portilla, the young mom, says her younger sisters are getting a better education than she did. Still, the streets of Nueva Fuerabamba were virtually deserted on a recent weekday. Vargas, the community leader, said many residents have returned to the countryside or sought work elsewhere. Alcoholism, fueled by idle time and settlement money, is on the rise, he said. Some villagers have committed suicide. Over the 12 months through July, four residents killed themselves by taking farming chemicals, according to the provincial district attorney’s office. It could not provide data on suicides in the old village of Fuerabamba. MMG, citing an “independent”
study done prior to the relocation, said the community previously suffered from high rates of domestic violence, alcoholism, illiteracy and poverty. While the company considers the new town a success, it acknowledged the transition has not been easy for all. “Connection to land, livelihood restoration and simple adaptation to new living conditions remain a challenge,” MMG said. Nueva Fuerabamba residents continue pressuring the company for additional assistance. Demands include more jobs and deeds to their houses, which have yet to be delivered because of bureaucratic delays, said Godofredo Huamani, the community’s lawyer. MMG said it stays apace of community needs through town hall meetings and has representatives on hand to field complaints. While villagers fret about the future, many cling to the past. Flora Huamani, 39, a mother of four girls, recalled how women used to get together to weave wool from their own sheep into the embroidered black dresses they wear. “Those were our traditions,” said Huamani from a bench in her walled front yard. “Now our tradition is meeting after meeting after meeting” to discuss the community’s problems.(rtr)

NUEVA FUERABAMBA - This remote town in Peru’s southern Andes was supposed to serve as a model for how companies can help communities uprooted by mining. Named Nueva Fuerabamba, it was built to house around 1,600 people who gave up their village and farmland to make room for a massive, open-pit copper mine. The new hamlet boasts paved streets and tidy houses with electricity and indoor plumbing, once luxuries to the indigenous Quechua-speaking people who now call this place home. The mine’s operator, MMG Ltd, the Melbourne-based unit of stateowned China Minmetals Corp, threw in jobs and enough cash so that some villagers no longer work. But the high-profile deal has not brought the harmony sought by villagers or MMG, a testament to the difficulty in averting mining disputes in this mineral-rich nation. Resource battles are common in Latin America, but tensions are particularly high in Peru, the world’s No. 2 producer of copper, zinc and silver. Peasant farmers have revolted against an industry that many see as damaging their land and livelihoods while denying them a fair share of the wealth. Peru is home to 167 social conflicts, most related to mining, according to the national ombudsman’s office, whose mission includes defusing hostilities. Nueva Fuerabamba was the centerpiece of one of the most generous mining settlements ever negotiated in Peru. But three years after moving in, many transplants are struggling amid their suburban-style conveniences, Reuters interviews with two dozen residents showed. Many miss their old lives growing potatoes and raising livestock. Some have squandered their cash settlements. Idleness and isolation have dulled the spirits of a people whose ancestors were feared cattle rustlers. “It is like we are trapped in a jail, in a cage where little animals are kept,” said Cipriano Lima, 43, a former farmer. Meanwhile, the mine, known as Las Bambas, has remained a magnet for discontent. Clashes between demonstrators and authorities in 2015 and 2016 left four area men dead. Nueva Fuerabamba residents have blocked copper transport roads to press for more financial help from MMG. As Jro Mangku Nurata explained, while officiating over a tutug kambuhan ritual recently, Nyambutin or nelubulanin (meaning 3 months) ceremonies are held for babies 105 days after they are born which is 3 months according to the Balinese calendar. God is asked to provide protection for the young human. Part of this ceremony includes giving the baby a name and clarifying the meaning of this name. Most notably this is the first time that the baby’s feet are allowed to touch the earth. “According to Hindu tradition, babies are only allowed to have their feet touch the ground once they are three months old as this is when they start being able to sit up by themselves”, explained Jro Mangku. The Nyambutin, ceremony said Jro Mangku is a way to welcome the baby into the world and show gratitude in a ritual called pangenteg bayu in which water is given to Mother Earth in the hopes that the baby is given a long life. The Nyambutin ceremony is classified as a Manusa Yadnya (rite of passage) ceremony and is carried out with the hope the baby and their family will be prosperous and have a good life. The baby’s placenta will usually have been buried in the family yard and it is in this same area that the nyambutin ceremony is held with the baby’s parents actively taking part in all the rituals involved. This ceremony is dedicated to Bhatara Surya (Lord of the Sun), Ibu Pertiwi (Mother Earth) and Bhatara-Bhatari (deities of the household), explained Jero Mangku Nurata. “The aim is to ask that the baby be guided and safeguarded”, he said. After East Ijogading block came to the overall champion last year, this year (2017) is the turn of the West Ijogading block to win the Jembrana Buffalo Race Cup 2017. The race was held at Sanghyang Cerik Circuit, Tuwed village, Melaya, Jembrana, on Sunday (Nov. 19) watched thousands of residents. Since early morning of the race day, thousands of buffalo racing enthusiasts have crowded the circuit. The jockeys were enthusiastic and eager to boost their buffaloes. After several hours of fighting, the West Ijogading became the champion of all three race categories as well as ahead of the East Ijogading block. West Ijogading managed to get totally 42 points and ahead of Ijogading Timur that only got totally 14 points. Automatically, the host won the overall champion and was entitled to get a trophy and cash prizes. Meanwhile, East Ijogading block as the second overall champion got cash prizes. The prize was given directly by Regent of Jembrana, I Putu Artha. Coordinator of Jembrana Buffalo Race (Makepung), I Made Mara, said that the Jembrana Buffalo Race Cup this time is followed by 157 pairs of buffalo from western block and 115 pairs from eastern block. TABANAN — Since Mount Agung began to erupt, there has been a decline in tourist arrivals, especially foreign tourists at some tourist destinations like Tanah Lot. This can be seen from the data where the visit of foreign tourists almost decreased by 50 percent. Operations Manager of Tanah Lot attraction, Ketut Toya Adnyana, said on Wednesday (Dec. 6) the decrease of foreign tourists visit is also accompanied with the decrease of the visit in the whole. Data of the past week indicated the decrease in foreign tourists at least reaches 50 percent. By and large, the tourist visit to Tanah Lot is dominated by foreign tourists, while the current visit is dominated by domestic tourists. Data on the tourist visit for one week are as follows: on Monday (Nov. 27) total visit reached 5,070
people consisting of 3,598 foreign tourists and 1,472 domestic tourists. On Tuesday (Nov. 28) total visit amounted to 4,792 people consisting of 3,195 foreign tourists and 1,597 domestic tourists. On Wednesday (Nov. 29) the visit downed to 3,172 people consisting of 2,131 foreign tourists and 1,041 domestic tourists and on Thursday (Nov. 30) the visit amounted to 2,365 people consisting of 1,306 foreign tourists 1,059 domestic tourists. Entering the long holiday on Friday (Dec. 1) the visit rose again to 5,720 dominated by domestic
tourist reaching 4,749 people and 971 foreign tourists. Similarly, on Saturday (Dec. 2) the visit went up again to 6,313 people consisting of 5505 domestic tourists and 943 foreign tourists. While on Sunday (Dec. 3) the visit reached 6,033 people consisting of 5,090 domestic tourists and 943 foreign tourists. Then, the visit dropped dramatically on Monday (Dec. 4) to 2319 people consisting of 1,412 domestic tourists and 907 foreign tourists. Toya explained that overall, tourist visit during December 2017
indeed much decreases when compared to the same month in previous years. He added when entering December, the average visit usually reaches 8,000 people. Until now, the average visit only reached 5,000 to 6,000 people. In addition to decline, there is a change in the dominance of visit where foreign tourist usually dominated the visit but currently domestic tourists are recorded the most in the past week. Toya explained the decline is caused by the warning of several countries advising not to visit Bali first due to the eruption of Mount Agung. However, since it is a natural disaster and experienced throughout Bali, his management will certainly
take steps to attract tourists, especially domestic tourists. “Currently the most potential is domestic tourists. So, we are preparing a program to attract domestic tourists to visit Tanah Lot,” said Toya. However, the target of tourist visit in 2017 alone, he said, has been exceeded. In 2017, the management targeted to reach 2,800,000 visitors. So far, it has reached 3,250,000 visitors. Nevertheless, this figure still does not exceed the achievement in 2016 reaching approximately 3,500,000 visitors. “In general, the target of tourist visit has been achieved but this year has not exceeded the number of tourist visit in 2016,” added Toya. In addition to introducing the potential of bicycle tours and sports in Bangli districts, this event aims to promote to tourists that Bangli and Bali in general remains very safe to be visited even though Mount Agung currently shows increasing activities. yani, said on Wednesday (Dec. 6) that Batur Enduro Challenge features the theme of Kintamani Enduro Bike to Nature. This cycling event will take the route along approximately 6 km. After starting at the Batur Geopark Museum, the cyclists will pass the Jalan Raya Suter-Besakih route, then going down to the Batur caldera through the forest at Buahan village area. After taking rest for a while Resto Apung, the journey continues to Toya Bungkah.
She explained that Batur Enduro Challenge is also filled with soft launching of Kintamani Bike Park and Toya Bungkah Cultural Stage in Batur UNESCO Global Geopark. “This activity is a joint initiative, financed by district government of Bangli, organized in collaboration with Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) Bali, Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources,” he explained.
Desak Andariyani added that according to schedule, the Batur Enduro Challenge on Sunday (Dec. 10) will start around 07:00. This activity is expected to have a positive impact on tourism in Bangli and Bali in general, especially amid the condition of Mount Agung experiencing increased activity. “In terms of radius, Bangli and other areas are outside the radius of disaster-prone area (KRB) III and II and remain very safe for tourists to make a visit,” he explained. SYDNEY - Australia became the 26th nation to legalise same-sex marriage on Thursday, prompting cheers and singing from a packed parliament public gallery in a country where some states ruled homosexual acts to be illegal until just 20 years ago. Lawmakers, who had cast aside a conservative push to allow religious objectors to refuse service to same-sex couples, waved rainbow flags and embraced on the floor of the chamber, after the overwhelming vote in favour of the bill. Fewer than five of 150 MPs voted against it. “What a day. What a day for love, for equality, for respect,” said Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. “It is time for more marriages.” The law, which will also recognise same-sex marriages solemnised in foreign countries, takes effect from Saturday. Because a month’s notice is required for the state to recognise a marriage, the first legal same-sex unions will be in January. Five-time Olympic gold-medal winner, the swimmer Ian Thorpe, who came out in 2014, said the law reflected contemporary Australia and would support people identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual,

JEJU - The art of Neapolitan pizza making won world heritage status on Thursday, joining a horse-riding game from Iran and Dutch wind mills on UNESCO’s culture list. UNESCO accepted the art of Neapolitan “pizzaiuoli,” or pizza makers, on the world body’s list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. “Congratulations #Italy!” it said in a tweet after a meeting in Jeju, South Korea where the decision was made. Italy argued the practice of the “pizzaiuoli” - preparing and flipping the dough, topping it and baking it in a wood-fired oven - was part of the country’s cultural and gastronomic tradition. In Rome, pizzeria owner Romano Fiore celebrated the decision. “I am honoured, like all Italians and Neapolitans are... pizza has centuries of history,” he said. Archetypal Neapolitan pizza has a relatively thin crust with the exception of the rim, which, when baked, bloats like a tiny bicycle tyre. It is made in a wood-burning brick oven and has two classic versions: Marinara (tomato, garlic, oregano and oil) and, the most famous, Margherita (tomato, mozzarella, oil and basil), giving it the red, white and green colours of the Italian flag. Tradition holds that the Margherita pizza was created in 1889 by a local chef in honour of Queen Margherita, who was visiting Naples, south of Rome on Italy’s Tyrrhenian coast. As pizza has become a favourite dish around the world, foreign innovations in toppings have often left Italians perplexed and aghast. Matteo Martino, a customer at Fiore’s pizzeria, said before the expected announcement, “I think, and I hope, that this could be the chance to make foreigners understand how pizza is made, without Nutella or pineapple.” UNESCO also accepted Chogan, an Iranian horse-riding game accompanied by music and storytelling, and the craft of millers operating windmills and watermills in the Netherlands. Traditional boat making on the Indonesian island of South Sulawesi, and Nsima, a maize-based culinary tradition from the African country of Malawi, also joined the list. Food culture already on the UNESCO list includes Turkish coffee culture and tradition, the gingerbread craft of northern Croatia and the traditional ancient Georgian method of Qvevri wine-making. Trendsetters: South African mothers do business with fashion cast-offs
JOHANNESBURG - Juggling paperwork, car keys and an always-beeping cellphone, Inet Situole, a 33-year-old in a crisp white blouse, runs a fashion boutique with more than 100 customers a month – a far cry from a decade ago, when she worked as a maid while trapped in an abusive marriage. Despite working seven days a week cleaning and cooking in an attempt to save some money, at the end of the month Situole would invariably find herself with nothing. “My husband would take all the money and spend it,” she told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. He also beat her and was unfaithful, she said. When she left him, Situole - an orphan since birth - was terrified of what lay ahead for her and her toddler. “I felt like dying,” she said. “I didn’t have anyone to run to.” But in 2015, her prospects were transformed after she joined a scheme to help unemployed mothers set up their own businesses. The Clothing Bank (TCB) was launched in 2010 in Cape Town by two businesswomen, Tracey Chambers and Tracey Gilmore. Gilmore started out by giving unemployed friends smart outfits to wear to job interviews - but it wasn’t working. “While sourcing the clothing was quite easy, finding opportunities for the women to get employment was really non-existent,” she said. At about 28 percent, South Africa’s unemployment rate is among the highest in the world. Lack of education is a key barrier to finding work, with less than a third of South Africans completing secondary school, according to a 2011 census. Chambers and Gilmore decided to combine business and entrepreneurship training with clothing to create a venture that could help tackle joblessness among mothers. More than a third of South Africa’s households are run by single mothers, a 2015 study by Statistics South Africa showed. “We’ve always believed that if you influence and change a mother’s life, you change an entire family,” said Tracy-Leigh Kinsey who runs TCB’s Johannesburg branch. “You change generations - and that’s why we focus specifically on mothers with dependent children.” BUSINESS IDEAS Once selected, the women follow a two-year programme that allows them to study and earn a living at the same time. “There was a huge amount of excess clothing stock in the retail supply chain,” Gilmore said. “That’s how we came up with the idea of using (it) as a tool to teach unemployed women to run businesses.” The women buy the surplus clothing - customer returns or endof-season merchandise - at discounted prices from TCB, setting up small fashion businesses and growing them as they make a profit. The equivalent of one garbage truck of textiles is wasted every second, and less than 1 percent of clothing is recycled into new clothes, MacArthur’s foundation said in a report. “The trajectory for the textiles industry is catastrophic if it continues in this way,” MacArthur told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. “We need to radically change the way that clothing is designed, used, made and recovered so that we end up with a system that is restorative and regenerative,” she said. If nothing changes, the fashion industry will consume a quarter of the world’s annual carbon budget by 2050, it said, referring to the emissions the world can make while keeping the global temperature rise at no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius. Fashion must abandon its “takemake-dispose” model, where unwanted clothes are sent to landfill
sites or incinerated, and start using non-polluting materials that are designed to last and could save the industry $500 billion, it said. The report presents a roadmap for creating better businesses and more innovative solutions, said McCartney, a long-time vegetarian who does not use leather, PVC or fur in her clothing. Textile production emits 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases annually, more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined, the report said. Clothes also release half a million tonnes of plastic microfibres into the ocean every year, equivalent to more than 50 billion plastic bottles, it said. Several major brands said they support the initiative, including Swedish fashion retailer H&M and sports giant Nike. “(It) is aligned with our efforts in making sure that economic and social development can happen in a way that the planet can afford,” H&M’s chief executive Karl-Johan Persson said in a statement. DENPASAR — Since the eruption of Mount Agung, Bali’s oldest tourist destination – Sanur, has seen occupancy rates plummet to an average of 10-12 percent. Chairman of the Regional Tourism Promotion Board (BPPD) Denpasar, I.B. Gede Sidharta Putra, when contacted on Tuesday (Dec. 5) said that the impact of Mount Agung’S eruption is even worse than the impact of the second Bali bomb when occupancy rates
remained around 30 percent and above. “Many hotel owners are worried as occupancy rates need to be in the range of 40-45 percent in order to cover operating costs”, said Sidharta Putra who is also Chairman of PHRI Denpasar and the Sanur Development Foundation.
In order to mitigate losses, tourism businesses in Sanur having started to implement measures such as scheduling holidays for their staff, so that they do not have to lay them off. Electricity and water are also being used more efficiently. “ We have started cutting water off and turned off all light for rooms that are not being used”, he said. Many are concerned that if con-
ditions persists for long that there will be layoffs which would then impact several sectors including farmers. “ We do not know how long this situation will last as it depends on nature”, said Sidharta. Previously, the Head of the Denpasar Tourism Office, Maria Antonia Dezire Mulyani, when met in the mayoral office said the eruption of Mount Agung certain affected tourism in Denpasar –
especially when the airport was closed. “ Inevitably this had an impact”, he said. “We continuously collect data in the number of visitors to Denpasar and there was a marled decrease after Mount Agung erupted. Monkey Forest Ubud takes advantage of lack of visitors GIANYAR — Many tourism operators are complaining about the ongoing uncertainty of Mount Agung. However such complaints will not change the reality that there are fewer tourists visiting Bali now. Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary Ubud however is taking a different approach. “ With such few visitors it is easier for us to make improvements to this tourist attractions. When there are a lot of visitors it is hard to do renovations”, said GM of Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary Ubud, Nyoman Buana, on Tuesday (Dec. 5). Although renovations had been scheduled since 2016, they were delayed several times due to the large number of visitors. Repairs to be made include reforesting the former parking area and creating new trails for people with disabilities. “Given current conditions, we have an opportunity to work maximally. So, once Mount Agung returns to normal, we will be ready to welcome tourists”, he said. Buana revealed that normally Monkey Forest Ubud receives 4,000-5,000 visitors per day. “ Last December we had even more than that – the place was packed”, he
said. However, since the eruption of Mount Agung and the subsequent closure Ngurah Rai International Airport, there are far fewer visitors. “Currently, we are still receiving visitors but on our quietness day last week there were only 1,008 visitors”, added Buana. Most of the tourists who have cancelled their visits, are those who arranged their trips through travel agencies. Independent travellers have mostly kept ot their original travel schedule. “ SO, people who come to Bali on their own are still enjoying visiting Bali”, he said. Nyoman Buana added that many tourists are well versed in the fact that Mount Agung is located some 51 km from Ubud and 67 km frm Ngurah Rai Airport. “ The disaster –prone area is only a 12km radius from the crater of Mount Agung, this is far away”, he said. Buana is therefore confident that there will continue to be tourists visiting Bali at this end of year period. “ We estimate that are still 4,000 visitors arriving throughout airport everyday, and about 25 percent of them will visit Ubud – especially Monkey Forest”, he added. Ngerebeg ritual in Tegallalang village
GIANYAR —The Ngerebeg traditional ritual took place in Tegallalang village on Sunday (Dec 6) as part of the piodalan (temple anniversary) of Duur Bingin Temple. Hundreds of children got dressed up in array of styles as part of an activity that aims to ask for the protection of God. Starting at around 11:00 on Wednesday morning, young boys filled Duur Bingin Temple in preparation for the ngerebeg ritual by praying, asking for sacerd food (rice and lawar) and eating together (megibung). Children dressed in ornaments made of young coconut leaves and sugar palm leaf, carried lelontek, kober (sacred flags) and penjor (bamboo poles) and special penjor made of snake-fruit tree trunks, walked around Tegallalang village, covering some 10 km. “This ritual is meant to neutralize all the negative influences existing in the customary village of Tegallalang. Adults and children dress up to look scary” explained chief of Tegallalang customary village, I Made Jaya Kusuma, amid the ritual preparations on Wednesday. Chief Kusuma explained that this ritual is held one day before the temple festival at Duur Bingin Temple that is held evey 210 days on Pegat Uwakan or Buda Kliwon Pahang. (Balinese calendar). All seven hamlets of Tegallalang village Gagah, Pejeng Aji, Tegallalang, Tegal, Tengah, Penusuan and Tri Wangsa, take part in this ceremony. He went on to explained that the ngerebeg ritual is preceded with a pacaruan (exorcism rite) at Duur Bingin Temple. After the pacaruan, the villagers present paica alit offerings and then the villagers ritually request special food consisting of rice served with lawar that is enjoyed by everyone in the temple courtyard. “Afterwards, Durr Bingin Tmeple’s sanctified effigies are paraded around the village by people (mostly children and young men) wearing scary costumes”, said Chief Kusuma. During the ngerebeg procession, the adults present offerings at all the temples and at the cemetery before returning to Duur Bingin Temple. Many people including tourists and shop keepers enjoyed watching the ritual procession. Whether they intended to or not the onlookers enjoyed witnessing this unique procession that takes place every six months. (kmb35)

Former headman of Sanur Kaja, I.B. Ketut Kiana, said on Wednesday (Dec. 6) that as a tourist destination, Sanur is different than other pasts of Bali. Sanur pioneered tourism on the island, and still remains free of excessive development including things like discotheques and the like that hare such a bog part of tourism elsewhere. “ Sanur emphasizes comfort and tranquility and thus attracts older tourists, especially form Europe”, said Kiana. Sanur is known more for quality than quantity and the white sandy beach with soft waves exemplifies this. It is difficult however for Sanur to maintain its image with the emergence of so many foreign owned villas. The city hotel with
cheap room rates that have been cropping up are also a problem. “City hotels are not suitable for the Sanur tourist destination. This is our challenge ahead”, he said. Member of the Bali House of Representatives, I.B. Gede Udiyana from Sanur said that his village is facing many challenges in maintaining itself as a leading tourist destination. One of thees challenges is of course the recent volcanic activity of Mount Agung. The tourism sector relies on safety and comfort. Despite being temporary this event has destabilized the tourism sector. The government along with other stakeholders, he said need to sit together and formulate a grand design for the
sustainability of Sanur tourism. “If this problem is not taken seriously, a greater threat will be inevitable. Many tourism sector employees could be laid in the near future. The government needs to take strategic steps immediately”, explained this former Chairman of the Sanur Development Foundation and former Chairman of Commission B of the Denpasar Parliament. The government, said Udiyana can for example, do more vigorous promotion of the area and pack their calendar of event with more competitive activities. LOS ANGELES - As “Star Wars” fans gear up for “The Last Jedi,” the anticipated next installment in the Skywalker series, its star and writer-director shed some light on how the franchise was mapping a future beyond the beloved characters. Rian Johnson, writer-director of “The Last Jedi,” will be overseeing a new trilogy of “Star Wars” films that will explore far-away corners of the galaxy, Walt Disney Co said in November. “I’m just in the very beginning phases of coming up with it so right now the sky is kind of the limit,” Johnson said while promoting “The Last Jedi” last week. “The appeal of it to me is to do a new story told over three movies, to have that kind of canvas, to be in the Star Wars world and to have the feel of a Star Wars film,” he said. The new stories will not follow the Skywalker saga, which George Lucas kicked off with 1977’s “Episode IV: A New Hope.” Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2012 for $4 billion, and rebooted the “Star Wars” franchise with the Skywalker trilogy and standalone films like “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” Johnson’s “The Last Jedi” picks up the Skywalker story after 2015’s blockbuster “The Force Awakens,” in which a new generation of characters was introduced with returning favorites Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) and Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). Sean Combs leads four black artists as world’s highest paid musicians
LOS ANGELES - Rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs was ranked the world’s highest-paid musician on Wednesday in an annual list that saw black artists take the top four spots. Combs, who is also a hip hop producer and entrepreneur, earned an estimated $130 million for the year, according to Forbes, mostly from his Bad Boy Family Reunion tour and the sale of his Sean Jean clothing line. Fellow American Beyonce ranked
second, with earnings estimated at $105 million from her Formation world tour and hit album “Lemonade,” while Canadian artists Drake ($94 million) and The Weeknd ($92 million) rounded out the top four. British band Coldplay pulled in an estimated $88 million to take the No. 5 spot. Forbes compiled the list after estimating pre-tax income for the 12 months from June 2016 to 2017 based
on interviews with managers, agents, lawyers, interviews and data from Pollstar, the Recording Industry Association of America and tracking firm Nielsen. Last year’s top two artists - Taylor Swift, and British boy band One Direction - both slipped out of the top 10 this year. Indonesia fights “extraordinary” diphtheria outbreak
JAKARTA - Indonesian health authorities will launch an immunisation drive next week to contain a sharp rise in cases of diphtheria, which has killed at least 32 people, including many children, in the world’s fourth most populous country this year. The health ministry said at least 591 cases had been reported since January, a 42 percent increase from last year, and called the outbreak an “extraordinary event”. “We have seen an acceleration in cases compared to last year ... We are implementing an immunisation programme to prevent a pandemic,” said Dr Mohamad Subuh, director general of disease prevention and control, at the ministry. The ministry recorded 415 cases and 24 deaths last year. Indonesia has among the world’s highest rates of diphtheria - along with India and sub-Saharan African countries - even though vaccinations have helped minimise global
cases over the past 30 years. The World Health Organisation recorded about 7,000 cases around the world last year. In 1980, the figure was 100,000. Diphtheria is a bacterial infection that spreads through close physical contact or through the air and can be fatal. Symptoms include fever and a sore throat, and the airway can sometimes become blocked. None of those affected in Indonesia had been vaccinated against the disease. The rise in cases
was attributed to several reasons, including some people rejecting vaccinations and a lack of access to healthcare, Subuh said.
