LONDON - The heartwarming true story of a stray cat that helped change the life of a London busker musician gets a big screen adaptation in “A Street Cat Named Bob” that premiered in the British capital on Thursday. Based on the book of the same name, the film stars “Clash of the Titans” actor Luke Treadaway as James Bowen, a recovering drug addict who upon returning from busking one evening in 2007 found an injured ginger cat at his sheltered accommodation. Bowen nursed the animal, which he named Bob, back to health and soon realised the cat was inseparable from him, following him as he went busking in London’s central Covent Garden area.
The sight of Bob on Bowen’s shoulders or sitting by his feet as he performed on the streets caught the attention of increasing numbers of passersby and led to a life turnaround and bestselling book for the busker. “He gave me a reason to get up in the morning ... and now I’m standing here,” Bowen told Reuters on the red carpet with Bob perched on his shoulders. “A movie about a part of our lives is just mind blowing.”
While producers had several cats on hand for the shoot, Bob also starred as himself, with co-stars Treadaway and “Downton Abbey” actress Joanne Froggatt describing him as “a professional” on set. “It was kind of an unusual experience filming in Covent Garden with real Bob on your shoulders but it was amazing,” Treadaway said. “He would just know what he had to do.” Bob lay on Bowen’s shoulders throughout media interviews on the red carpet ahead of the film’s screening, for which the two were joined by Prince William’s wife Kate, who attended as patron of the Action on Addiction charity. Search continues on property of man accused of grisly crimes
WOODRUFF, S.C. — Investigators will continue Monday combing for human remains and other clues on the South Carolina property of a man accused of a grisly crime spree stretching more than a decade. Todd Kohlhepp became a suspect in at least seven deaths after a woman was found Thursday chained by her neck and ankle in a metal storage container on his 95-acre property near rural Woodruff. His arrest in that case led to his confession in a notorious quadruple slaying at a motorcycle shop from 2003 in the small town of Chesnee, investigators said. He was denied bond Sunday during a brief court appearance on four murder charges for those slayings. He’s also charged with kidnapping the woman, and more criminal
counts are expected. Authorities suspect he killed at least three people other than the motorcycle shop victims. A Spartanburg County Sheriff’s investigative report says Kohlhepp “confessed to investigators that he shot and killed” the motorcycle shop’s owner, service manager, mechanic and bookkeeper, giving details only the killer
would know. Now, Sheriff Chuck Wright, who was first elected about a year after the Superbike Motorsports killings, has a wide-ranging investigation of a crime spree over more than a decade. The investigation has expanded to other properties Kohlhepp, a real estate agent, either currently or used to own. Those properties are not limited to South Carolina, Wright said Sunday, declining to be more specific. Both the FBI and Homeland Security are involved, he said. Kohlhepp showed investigators Saturday where he says he buried two other victims on the property
he bought two years ago. Human remains were uncovered Sunday at one of those sites, Wright said. “We’re not even close” on identifying the remains or cause of death, he said. “We can’t tell anything.” Kohlhepp did not tell investigators who was buried there. Removing the remains to “preserve every bit of evidence” is a meticulous, time-consuming process, said Coroner Rusty Clevenger. The gravesites Kohlhepp pointed to are in addition to the body found Friday in a shallow grave at the site. Authorities identified that victim as the boyfriend of the woman found Thursday. Clevenger said he died of multiple gunshot wounds.
The Associated Press is not naming the woman because the suspect is a sex offender, though authorities have not said whether she was sexually assaulted. On Sunday, Kohlhepp appeared in an orange jumpsuit for the brief bond hearing and declined to make a statement. He didn’t have an attorney. The Head of the Bangli Agriculture and Forestry Agency, I Wayan Tagel Sujana, explained that subak groups mostly prone to water crisis are in Tembuku such as the Subak Bangkiang Sidem at Bangbang (46 hectares), Subak Yangapi (36 hectares), Subak Tampuagan at Peninjoan (176 hectares), Subak Penida Kaja (30 hectares), Subak Penida Kelod (20 hectares), Subak Tibubolong (28 hectares), Subak Tingkadbatu (30 hectares) and Subak Pembungan at Jehem (33 hectares). In addition, the water crisis also occurred at paddy fields in Bangli subdistrict including the Subak Umanyar (20 hectares), Subak Umatai (27 hectares) and Subak Sidawa (14 hectares). “In the meantime, the subak groups in the Kintamani and Susut subdistrict do not face water crisis,” he explained. Water crisis in a number of subak area has happened since two years ago coinciding with a
prolonged dry season. This condition can cause farmers to plant rice only once a year. “One time has been maximal. Water is getting difficult to get, especially it occurs when drought begins. Plant rotation is also more difficult, while farmers can no longer rely on rain completely,” he said. He suggested not neglecting their land so as keeps earning revenue amid the increasingly difficult conditions. Farmers can grow other commodities having good selling price in the market such as corn and soybeans. “These two commodities also belong to food selfsufficiency program. Thus, they can be developed when the water crisis lasts,””he said. In order to tackle inflation, he said the land could also be planted with onions and peppers. Especially in Bangli subdistrict, the commodities cultivated at Subak Prayu, Bunutin
and Subak Babahan at Tamanbali are prone to price fluctuation. Then, in Tembuku subdistrict they are cultivated at Subak Penida Kaja on 3 hectares of land. “This commodity has significant affect on inflation. Thus, the production needs to be encouraged. Chili is cultivated at Subak Teba by Karyanadi farmer group, Bunutin and Subak Munduk Teki, Landih. In Tembuku, it is cultivated by Merta Bhuana farmer group at Peninjoan and Budimulia farmer group at Bangbang. They spread across the area of1.5 hectare,” he said. So far, said Sujana, the development of the two commodities are mostly carried out by farmers in Kintamani, exactly around the Lake Batur and the area behind the hill. “By developing in other areas, our production could be further increased,” he concluded. According to Spokesperson for the Indonesian Police Headquarters, Boy Rafli Amar, the meeting discussed three subjects namely; terrorism, people smuggling and narcotics. “The Indonesian Police have a very good relationship with the AFP and will be discussing terrorism, narcotics and people smuggling as these are the main issues”, he said. Particularly with regards to issues around people smuggling, both Indonesia and Australia are eager to reduce the numbers. Citizens of other countries who want to migrate to Australia often pass through Indonesia therefore, both Indonesia and Australia have similar concerns. Other Indian cities join Delhi in air pollution emergency
LUCKNOW — The sickening air pollution that led the Indian capital to shut schools and construction sites this week has prompted similar measures in nearby cities. Officials in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh said Monday that they expect the acrid smog to blanket the state within days. For more than a week, New Delhi’s skies have been filled with a thick haze that has made people’s eyes sting and their throats sore. Air pollution experts blame myriad pollution sources, from diesel-burning cars and seasonal crop burning to garbage fires and stoves fueled with kerosene and cow dung. Winter weather patterns also mean there is less wind to circulate the air. The smog “remains in the lower atmospheric layer,” said Dr. Surya Kant Tripathi, who heads the pulmo-
nary medicine department at King George’s Medical University in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh. He urged people to avoid going outdoors, unless wearing face masks. “Higher air pollution levels may take days to settle,” he said. Lucknow city director J.P. Gupta said the same smog covering New Delhi was wafting over western parts of Uttar Pradesh and would soon cover the entire state, India’s most populous, with around 210 million people. In the Uttar Pradesh district of Ghaziabad, considered an eastern suburb of New Delhi, schools were ordered closed along with those in the capital on Monday and Tuesday, after which Uttar Pradesh officials said they would reassess the situation. There are no official air pollution monitors set up in the Delhi
suburban areas, but in both New Delhi and Lucknow, the levels of PM2.5 — the tiny particulate matter that can clog lungs — were at least above 400 micrograms per cubic meter on Monday. That’s more than 40 times what’s considered safe by the World Health Organization, and more than six times the limit set by Indian law. Some monitoring points were registering levels much higher. New Delhi has also ordered the temporary closure of a nearby coal-burning power plant, as well as construction and demolition sites blamed for sending huge plumes of fine dust particles into the air. It also ordered that roads be doused with water to settle dust, and banned diesel-powered electricity generators for 10 days except at hospitals and cellphone towers. (ap)

BANGLI - Some farmers at Subak Lagaan, Tegal, Bebalang, complain about the wild monkeys living in the area of Melangit River. The herd of wild monkeys often comes to the paddy field area of farmers and harms the crop in the surrounding areas. As a result, farmers experience crop failure and some lands can no longer be functioned. A farmer of Subak Lagaan, Ketut Tanggal, when met on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 6) revealed that wild monkey attack into agricultural land has been experienced by farmers since long time ago. However, lately their attack increasingly worsens. Wild monkeys estimated to reach five hundred heads are admitted to often destroy crops of farmers. Other than fruit-bearing plants like coconuts and bananas, the mischievous monkeys also attacked paddy plants, water spinach to elephant grass. “Everything is destroyed, like coconut and water spinach leaves and so are small timber plants. Ultimately, many farmers face crop failure because of their act,” he explained. Pursuant to his observations all this time, the wild monkeys often attacking the paddy field of Subak Lagaan are living in three groups. They consist of Geni Laba living in the eastern part of Tegalalang, Pesiraman and Lagan group. Even though their existence is quite detrimental, farmers at Subak Lagaan cannot do much all this time to overcome their attacks. They will only leave when the land is attended and expelled by the land owner. “When they see people carrying a gun, the monkeys will hide,” he said. Due to the violent act of the monkeys, he added, some farmers whose land located close to the river are reluctant to farm. They let their land be dormant. Some farmers change their plants from rice to water lily. “Since the monkeys do not want to savor water lily, farmers then choose to plant it,” he added. (kmb40)
Japanese man killed in accident off Indonesia’s Bali island
DENPASAR — Indonesian police say large waves hit a glass-bottomed boat off the resort island of Bali, causing it to capsize and killing three people including a Japanese tourist. Local maritime police chief Ketut Suparta said the 71-year-old Japanese victim, Noburu Nakazawa, was one of four Japanese tourists in the boat that sank Monday in waters off Serangan, a small island in Benoa Bay. Suparta said the two other fatalities were the boat’s Indonesian captain and his wife. One of the Japanese tourists, Hirokazu Ito, was hospitalized due to shock. The two others were in good condition. The group was looking at underwater scenery when their boat was hit by a big wave that threw Nakazawa overboard. It was followed by a second wave that capsized the boat. (ap)

Other than the concept of home architecture still reflecting the nuances of local knowledge, it also has a unique burial tradition. At the village earning the nickname as the cleanest village in the world, there are differences in the position between the burial of women’s and men’s bodies. Operations Manager of Penglipuran village attraction, Nengah Moneng, revealed that the local tradition handed down by his ancestors has differences in the burial position for the bodies of men and women. Women’s body is buried in the gazing upward position as the common position of other villages, while position of men’s body is facedown.
According to Moneng, such different burial position has its own philosophy. Such women’s position symbolizes the earth (prathivi), while men’s position symbolizes sky (akhasa). “That’s the philosophy I’ve got from our predecessors,” he said, Saturday (Nov. 5). Not only that, when buried, the head of both women’s and men’s body is equally posi-
tioned westwards or the direction of sunset. “It is made in such position because the location of Dalem Pingit Temple is in the southwest. Thus, the bodies are buried oriented to the west or towards the sunset,” he explained. Apart from the burial position, Moneng also revealed that cemetery at Penglipuran is divided into three areas. The easternmost is specifically intended to bury people that died due to unnatural causes (suicide and accident), the middle one is intended to bury babies and adults who have never married. “In the meantime, the westernmost one is intended to bury people who died of natural causes,” said Moneng. China adopts cyber security law in face of overseas opposition

Saudi oil shipments to Egypt halted indefinitely, Egyptian officials say CAIRO/ABU DHABI - Saudi Arabia has informed Egypt that shipments of oil products expected under a $23 billion aid deal would be halted indefinitely, suggesting a deepening rift between the Arab world’s richest country and its most populous. Saudi Arabia agreed to provide Egypt with 700,000 tonnes of refined oil products per month for five years in April, during a visit by King Salman. The cargoes stopped arriving at the start of October, as festering political tensions burst into the open, but Egyptian officials said the contract remained valid and had appeared to hold out hope that oil would start flowing again soon. Saudi Arabia’s state oil firm Aramco has not commented on the halt. But on Monday, Egyptian Oil Minister Tarek El Molla confirmed it had halted the shipments indefinitely. An oil ministry official told Reuters: “They did not give us a reason. They only informed the authority about halting shipments of petroleum products until further notice.” The move comes as a source in Molla’s delegation said late on Sunday evening that he would visit Iran, Saudi Arabia’s main political rival, to try to strike new oil deals. BEIJING - China’s foreign exchange reserves fell the most in nine months in October and by far more than expected to the lowest since March 2011, indicating further capital outflows despite recent signs the world’s second-largest economy is stabilising. Reserves fell $45.7 billion last month to $3.121 trillion, the biggest monthly decline since January, compared with a near $19 billion fall in September, central bank data showed on Monday. The October drop was the fourth in a row, and exceeded the previous three months combined, though analysts said a surging U.S. dollar may have accounted for much of the move. Economists polled by Reuters had predicted a decline of around $26 billion to $3.14 trillion from $3.166 trillion at end-September, a five-year low. The central bank is widely believed to have sold U.S. dollars to cushion the yuan currency’s descent in October as it fell to sixyear lows. “The biggest decline in China’s FX reserves since the start of the year has more to do with valuation effects than increased intervention,” Capital Economics said in a note. “Capital outflows remain substantial but probably eased last month.” Growing expectations that the U.S. Federal Reserve will raise interest rates in December boosted the dollar by about 3 percent versus major currencies in October, reducing their value in China’s reserves. Coupled with worries about China’s economy and its rapidly rising debt, that has stoked capital outflows and weighed on the yuan, analysts say. China also may have suffered losses on its investments in U.S. Treasuries and debt in other developed countries, some analysts said. “The pressure on the yuan remains big as we approach the U.S. rate-hike window in December,”

Ahok questioned at police HQ for security reasons
JAKARTA - Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) was questioned as a witness in an alleged case of religious blasphemy at the National Police Headquarters instead of the National Polices Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim) for security reasons. If the questioning was held at the Bareskrim office at the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry it would fearfully cause inconvenience as there were many offices there, Chief of Bareskrim Commissioner General Ari Dono Sukmanto said on Monday. “It was held at the National Police Headquarters for security reasons,” he said. Sukmanto said the police still needed comments from several expert witnesses to handle the alleged case of
religious blasphemy. “As originally planned, the questioning would start at 09.00 a.m. on Monday. (The Jakarta governor) was summoned as a witness,” he said. It is the first time for the police to question Ahok as a witness in the case. On October 24, Ahok visited the Bareskrim office at his own initiative to coordinate with investigators in connection with the case. The police has questioned 22 wit-
nesses, including seven expert witnesses. The expert witnesses included ulemas from the Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI), Quran interpreters, criminal law experts and linguists. On November 4, hundreds of thousands of Muslims staged a peaceful rally in a show of support for the edict issued by the MUI against Ahok. The edict was issued following an alleged case of blasphemy involving certain remarks made by the governor. At the rally, the demonstrators urged law enforcement agencies to take legal action against Ahok for alleged blasphemous statement concerning the Holy Quran.(ant)

Police resorted to using tear gas and water cannon after clashes with Muslim hardliners calling for the resignation of Jakarta’s Christian governor. An executive at an Indonesian company that owns the franchise rights for Zara in the country said the jacket in question was made by the Spanish clothing retailer and it was already sold out in almost all of its stores. “The demand for these jackets keeps coming and we have placed a repeat order for them,” Fetty Kwartati, corporate secretary of PT Mitra Adiperkasa Tbk, told Reuters by telephone. A presidential spokesman declined to comment. WASHINGTON - Democrat Hillary Clinton heads into the final day of a tight White House race against Republican Donald Trump on Monday with new momentum after the FBI’s announcement that no criminal charges were forthcoming in the probe of her email practices. Both Clinton and Trump will spend the day racing across a handful of key battleground states that could swing Tuesday’s election, which polls show is extremely close but tilting toward Clinton. FBI Director James Comey sent shockwaves through the race by telling Congress on Sunday that investigators had worked “around the clock” to complete a review of newly discovered emails and found no reason to change their July finding that Clinton was not guilty of criminal wrongdoing in her use of a private email server while secretary of state. NEW YORK - Eritrean world champion Ghirmay Ghebreslassie and Kenyan Mary Keitany powered to dominant victories in the New York City Marathon on Sunday. The 20-year-old Ghebreslassie won the men’s race in two hours, seven minutes and 51 seconds, more than a minute ahead of Kenyan Lucas Rotich. Keitany became the first woman in three decades to win three consecutive New York marathons with a runaway performance. The 34-year-old took the lead by the ninth mile, made a major move by the 15th mile and won by more than three minutes in 2:24:26. Ghebreslassie’s victory ended a string of four victories in a row by
Kenyan men in the race and denied the African nation a fourth consecutive sweep of New York men’s and women’s titles. “I am really proud with my victory today to be the first one from my country,” said Ghebreslassie. “Nobody before from Eritrea won in the major marathons.” Fourth in both this year’s London Marathon and the Rio Olympics, New York’s youngest ever winner joined Rotich and Ethiopian Lelisa Desisa in breaking away from a crowded pack at about the 22km mark. By 35km Ghebreslassie held a 20 second lead over Rotich and was never threatened. Third went to 39-year-old American Abdi Abdirahman (2:11:23).
Defending champion Stanley Biwott, suffering from calf problems, was never a factor and dropped out before 15km. American Dathan Ritzenhein, among the early leaders, also failed to finish, pulling out at mile 19. Keitany became the first woman to win the race three consecutive times since eight-time winner Grete Waitz’s streak of five in a row ended in 1986. “Winning three times means a lot to me,” said Keitany. “It’s not easy but I got it.” She joined Waitz and Britain’s Paul Radcliffe as the only women to win the race at least three times. SWANSEA — Even after Manchester United’s four-match winless run in the Premier League ended, Jose Mourinho wasn’t happy — turning on players who missed Sunday’s 3-1 victory at Swansea. “There is a difference between the brave, who want to be there at any cost, and the ones for whom a little pain can make a difference,” Mourinho said. “We have players with problems,” he added. “I have friends in other sports and they play at the highest level at other sports, and how many times do they play when not 100 percent? I have a friend that is a big tennis player. He tells me he remembers more the time he plays with pain than the time he plays without any pain and that’s what I mean. To compete you have to go to the limit.” Asked about players not being prepared to play through pain, Mourinho replied: “It’s a cultural thing for some. NEW YORK - Eritrean world champion Ghirmay Ghebreslassie and Kenyan Mary Keitany powered to dominant victories in the New York City Marathon on Sunday. The 20-year-old Ghebreslassie won the men’s race in two hours, seven minutes and 51 seconds, more than a minute ahead of Kenyan Lucas Rotich. Keitany became the first woman in three decades to win three consecutive New York marathons with a runaway performance. The 34-year-old took the lead by the ninth mile, made a major move by the 15th mile and won by more than three minutes in 2:24:26. Ghebreslassie’s victory ended a string of four victories in a row by

Clinton gets boost from FBI as tight White House race hits final day
WASHINGTON - Democrat Hillary Clinton heads into the final day of a tight White House race against Republican Donald Trump on Monday with new momentum after the FBI’s announcement that no criminal charges were forthcoming in the probe of her email practices. Both Clinton and Trump will spend the day racing across a handful of key battleground states that could swing Tuesday’s election, which polls show is extremely close but tilting toward Clinton. FBI Director James Comey sent shockwaves through the race by telling Congress on Sunday that investigators had worked “around the clock” to complete a review of newly discovered emails and found no reason to change their July finding that Clinton was not guilty of criminal wrongdoing in her use of a private email server while secretary of state. Whether the announcement came in time to change minds or
undo any damage from days of Republican attacks on Clinton as corrupt was uncertain. Tens of millions of Americans had cast early votes in the 10 days since Comey first told Congress of the newly discovered emails. Clinton’s Democratic allies hoped the FBI finding would be enough to push her over the finish line and end the uncertainty and Republican attacks on her character that dogged her campaign for the last 10 days. “The FBI’s swift and thorough review should finally close the door on this Republican sideshow,” House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said, adding the election

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, once seen as the front-runner to become the next president of South Korea if he decides to run, has slipped to second place in public support amid a political crisis engulfing the current leader, a poll suggests. Ban has been expected to join the conservative Saenuri Party of President Park Geun-hye if he runs for the top post in the election scheduled in December 2017, although the U.N. chief has yet to declare he is considering a run. Support for Ban slipped to 17.1 percent in an opinion poll conducted last week according to Realmeter on Monday, the first time he has dropped from first place since June when South Korean pollsters began including him among potential candidates. Saudi oil shipments to Egypt halted indefinitely, Egyptian officials say CAIRO/ABU DHABI - Saudi Arabia has informed Egypt that shipments of oil products expected under a $23 billion aid deal would be halted indefinitely, suggesting a deepening rift between the Arab world’s richest country and its most populous. Saudi Arabia agreed to provide Egypt with 700,000 tonnes of refined oil products per month for five years in April, during a visit by King Salman. The cargoes stopped arriving at the start of October, as festering political tensions burst into the open, but Egyptian officials said the contract remained valid and had appeared to hold out hope that oil would start flowing again soon. Saudi Arabia’s state oil firm Aramco has not commented on the halt. But on Monday, Egyptian Oil Minister Tarek El Molla confirmed it had halted the shipments indefinitely. An oil ministry official told Reuters: “They did not give us a reason. They only informed the authority about halting shipments of petroleum products until further notice.” The move comes as a source in Molla’s delegation said late on Sunday evening that he would visit Iran, Saudi Arabia’s main political rival, to try to strike new oil deals. Egypt and Iran’s diplomatic relations have been strained since the 1970s. An Egyptian official visiting Iran would cement a break in its alliance with Saudi Arabia and mark a seismic shift in the regional political order. BEIJING - China’s foreign exchange reserves fell the most in nine months in October and by far more than expected to the lowest since March 2011, indicating further capital outflows despite recent signs the world’s second-largest economy is stabilising. Reserves fell $45.7 billion last month to $3.121 trillion, the biggest monthly decline since January, compared with a near $19 billion fall in September, central bank data showed on Monday. The October drop was the fourth in a row, and exceeded the previous three months combined, though analysts said a surging U.S. dollar may have accounted for much of the move. Economists polled by Reuters had predicted a decline of around $26 billion to $3.14 trillion from $3.166 trillion at end-September, a five-year low. The central bank is widely believed to have sold U.S. dollars to cushion the yuan currency’s descent in October as it fell to sixyear lows. “The biggest decline in China’s FX reserves since the start of the year has more to do with valuation effects than increased intervention,” Capital Economics said in a note. “Capital outflows remain substantial but probably eased last month.” Growing expectations that the U.S. Federal Reserve will raise interest rates in December boosted the dollar by about 3 percent versus major currencies in October, reducing their value in China’s reserves. Coupled with worries about China’s economy and its rapidly rising debt, that has stoked capital outflows and weighed on the yuan, analysts say. Ahok questioned at police HQ for security reasons
JAKARTA - Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) was questioned as a witness in an alleged case of religious blasphemy at the National Police Headquarters instead of the National Polices Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim) for security reasons. If the questioning was held at the Bareskrim office at the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry it would fearfully cause inconvenience as there were many offices there, Chief of Bareskrim Commissioner General Ari Dono Sukmanto said on Monday. “It was held at the National Police Headquarters for security reasons,” he said. Sukmanto said the police still needed comments from several expert witnesses to handle the alleged case of
religious blasphemy. “As originally planned, the questioning would start at 09.00 a.m. on Monday. (The Jakarta governor) was summoned as a witness,” he said. It is the first time for the police to question Ahok as a witness in the case. On October 24, Ahok visited the Bareskrim office at his own initiative to coordinate with investigators in connection with the case. The police has questioned 22 wit-
nesses, including seven expert witnesses. The expert witnesses included ulemas from the Indonesian Ulemas Council (MUI), Quran interpreters, criminal law experts and linguists. On November 4, hundreds of thousands of Muslims staged a peaceful rally in a show of support for the edict issued by the MUI against Ahok. The edict was issued following an alleged case of blasphemy involving certain remarks made by the governor. BEIJING - China adopted a controversial cyber security law on Monday to counter what Beijing says are growing threats such as hacking and terrorism, but the law triggered concerns among foreign business and rights groups. Other Indian cities join Delhi in air pollution emergency
LUCKNOW — The sickening air pollution that led the Indian capital to shut schools and construction sites this week has prompted similar measures in nearby cities. Officials in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh said Monday that they expect the acrid smog to blanket the state within days. For more than a week, New Delhi’s skies have been filled with a thick haze that has made people’s eyes sting and their throats sore. Air pollution experts blame myriad pollution sources, from diesel-burning cars and seasonal crop burning to garbage fires and stoves fueled with kerosene and cow dung. Winter weather patterns also mean there is less wind to circulate the air. The smog “remains in the lower atmospheric layer,” said Dr. Surya Kant Tripathi, who heads the pulmo-
nary medicine department at King George’s Medical University in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh. He urged people to avoid going outdoors, unless wearing face masks. “Higher air pollution levels may take days to settle,” he said. Lucknow city director J.P. Gupta said the same smog covering New Delhi was wafting over western parts of Uttar Pradesh and would soon cover the entire state, India’s most populous, with around 210 million people. In the Uttar Pradesh district of Ghaziabad, considered an eastern suburb of New Delhi, schools were ordered closed along with those in the capital on Monday and Tuesday, after which Uttar Pradesh officials said they would reassess the situation. There are no official air pollution monitors set up in the Delhi
suburban areas, but in both New Delhi and Lucknow, the levels of PM2.5 — the tiny particulate matter that can clog lungs — were at least above 400 micrograms per cubic meter on Monday. That’s more than 40 times what’s considered safe by the World Health Organization, and more than six times the limit set by Indian law. Some monitoring points were registering levels much higher. New Delhi has also ordered the temporary closure of a nearby coal-burning power plant, as well as construction and demolition sites blamed for sending huge plumes of fine dust particles into the air. BANGLI - Some farmers at Subak Lagaan, Tegal, Bebalang, complain about the wild monkeys living in the area of Melangit River. The herd of wild monkeys often comes to the paddy field area of farmers and harms the crop in the surrounding areas. As a result, farmers experience crop failure and some lands can no longer be functioned. A farmer of Subak Lagaan, Ketut Tanggal, when met on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 6) revealed that wild monkey attack into agricultural land has been experienced by farmers since long time ago. However, lately their attack increasingly worsens. Wild monkeys estimated to reach five hundred heads are admitted to often destroy crops of farmers. Other than fruit-bearing plants like coconuts and bananas, the mischievous monkeys also attacked paddy plants, water spinach to elephant grass. “Everything is destroyed, like coconut and water spinach leaves and so are small timber plants. Ultimately, many farmers face crop failure because of their act,” he explained. Pursuant to his observations all this time, the wild monkeys often attacking the paddy field of Subak Lagaan are living in three groups. They consist of Geni Laba living in the eastern part of Tegalalang, Pesiraman and Lagan group. Even though their existence is quite detrimental, farmers at Subak Lagaan cannot do much all this time to overcome their attacks. They will only leave when the land is attended and expelled by the land owner. “When they see people carrying a gun, the monkeys will hide,” he said. Due to the violent act of the monkeys, he added, some farmers whose land located close to the river are reluctant to farm. They let their land be dormant. Some farmers change their plants from rice to water lily. “Since the monkeys do not want to savor water lily, farmers then choose to plant it,” he added. (kmb40)
Japanese man killed in accident off Indonesia’s Bali island
DENPASAR — Indonesian police say large waves hit a glass-bottomed boat off the resort island of Bali, causing it to capsize and killing three people including a Japanese tourist. Local maritime police chief Ketut Suparta said the 71-year-old Japanese victim, Noburu Nakazawa, was one of four Japanese tourists in the boat that sank Monday in waters off Serangan, a small island in Benoa Bay. Suparta said the two other fatalities were the boat’s Indonesian captain and his wife. One of the Japanese tourists, Hirokazu Ito, was hospitalized due to shock. The two others were in good condition. The group was looking at underwater scenery when their boat was hit by a big wave that threw Nakazawa overboard. At the village earning the nickname as the cleanest village in the world, there are differences in the position between the burial of women’s and men’s bodies. Operations Manager of Penglipuran village attraction, Nengah Moneng, revealed that the local tradition handed down by his ancestors has differences in the burial position for the bodies of men and women. Women’s body is buried in the gazing upward position as the common position of other villages, while position of men’s body is facedown.
According to Moneng, such different burial position has its own philosophy. Such women’s position symbolizes the earth (prathivi), while men’s position symbolizes sky (akhasa). “That’s the philosophy I’ve got from our predecessors,” he said, Saturday (Nov. 5). Not only that, when buried, the head of both women’s and men’s body is equally posi-
tioned westwards or the direction of sunset. “It is made in such position because the location of Dalem Pingit Temple is in the southwest. Thus, the bodies are buried oriented to the west or towards the sunset,” he explained. Apart from the burial position, Moneng also revealed that cemetery at Penglipuran is divided into three areas. The easternmost is specifically intended to bury people that died due to unnatural causes (suicide and accident), the middle one is intended to bury babies and adults who have never married. “In the meantime, the westernmost one is intended to bury people who died of natural causes,” said Moneng. The Head of the Bangli Agriculture and Forestry Agency, I Wayan Tagel Sujana, explained that subak groups mostly prone to water crisis are in Tembuku such as the Subak Bangkiang Sidem at Bangbang (46 hectares), Subak Yangapi (36 hectares), Subak Tampuagan at Peninjoan (176 hectares), Subak Penida Kaja (30 hectares), Subak Penida Kelod (20 hectares), Subak Tibubolong (28 hectares), Subak Tingkadbatu (30 hectares) and Subak Pembungan at Jehem (33 hectares). In addition, the water crisis also occurred at paddy fields in Bangli subdistrict including the Subak Umanyar (20 hectares), Subak Umatai (27 hectares) and Subak Sidawa (14 hectares). “In the meantime, the subak groups in the Kintamani and Susut subdistrict do not face water crisis,” he explained. Water crisis in a number of subak area has happened since two years ago coinciding with a
prolonged dry season. This condition can cause farmers to plant rice only once a year. “One time has been maximal. Water is getting difficult to get, especially it occurs when drought begins. Plant rotation is also more difficult, while farmers can no longer rely on rain completely,” he said. He suggested not neglecting their land so as keeps earning revenue amid the increasingly difficult conditions. Farmers can grow other commodities having good selling price in the market such as corn and soybeans. “These two commodities also belong to food selfsufficiency program. Thus, they can be developed when the water crisis lasts,””he said. In order to tackle inflation, he said the land could also be planted with onions and peppers. Especially in Bangli subdistrict, the commodities cultivated at Subak Prayu, Bunutin
and Subak Babahan at Tamanbali are prone to price fluctuation. Then, in Tembuku subdistrict they are cultivated at Subak Penida Kaja on 3 hectares of land. “This commodity has significant affect on inflation. Thus, the production needs to be encouraged. Chili is cultivated at Subak Teba by Karyanadi farmer group, Bunutin and Subak Munduk Teki, Landih. In Tembuku, it is cultivated by Merta Bhuana farmer group at Peninjoan and Budimulia farmer group at Bangbang. They spread across the area of1.5 hectare,” he said. So far, said Sujana, the development of the two commodities are mostly carried out by farmers in Kintamani, exactly around the Lake Batur and the area behind the hill. “By developing in other areas, our production could be further increased,” he concluded. LONDON - The heartwarming true story of a stray cat that helped change the life of a London busker musician gets a big screen adaptation in “A Street Cat Named Bob” that premiered in the British capital on Thursday. Based on the book of the same name, the film stars “Clash of the Titans” actor Luke Treadaway as James Bowen, a recovering drug addict who upon returning from busking one evening in 2007 found an injured ginger cat at his sheltered accommodation. Bowen nursed the animal, which he named Bob, back to health and soon realised the cat was inseparable from him, following him as he went busking in London’s central Covent Garden area.
The sight of Bob on Bowen’s shoulders or sitting by his feet as he performed on the streets caught the attention of increasing numbers of passersby and led to a life turnaround and bestselling book for the busker. “He gave me a reason to get up in the morning ... and now I’m standing here,” Bowen told Reuters on the red carpet with Bob perched on his shoulders. “A movie about a part of our lives is just mind blowing.”
While producers had several cats on hand for the shoot, Bob also starred as himself, with co-stars Treadaway and “Downton Abbey” actress Joanne Froggatt describing him as “a professional” on set. “It was kind of an unusual experience filming in Covent Garden with real Bob on your shoulders but it was amazing,” Treadaway said. “He would just know what he had to do.” Bob lay on Bowen’s shoulders throughout media interviews on the red carpet ahead of the film’s screening, for which the two were joined by Prince William’s wife Kate, who attended as patron of the Action on Addiction charity. Search continues on property of man accused of grisly crimes
WOODRUFF, S.C. — Investigators will continue Monday combing for human remains and other clues on the South Carolina property of a man accused of a grisly crime spree stretching more than a decade. Todd Kohlhepp became a suspect in at least seven deaths after a woman was found Thursday chained by her neck and ankle in a metal storage container on his 95-acre property near rural Woodruff. His arrest in that case led to his confession in a notorious quadruple slaying at a motorcycle shop from 2003 in the small town of Chesnee, investigators said. He was denied bond Sunday during a brief court appearance on four murder charges for those slayings. He’s also charged with kidnapping the woman, and more criminal
counts are expected. Authorities suspect he killed at least three people other than the motorcycle shop victims. A Spartanburg County Sheriff’s investigative report says Kohlhepp “confessed to investigators that he shot and killed” the motorcycle shop’s owner, service manager, mechanic and bookkeeper, giving details only the killer
would know. Now, Sheriff Chuck Wright, who was first elected about a year after the Superbike Motorsports killings, has a wide-ranging investigation of a crime spree over more than a decade. The investigation has expanded to other properties Kohlhepp, a real estate agent, either currently or used to own. Those properties are not limited to South Carolina, Wright said Sunday, declining to be more specific. Both the FBI and Homeland Security are involved, he said. Kohlhepp showed investigators Saturday where he says he buried two other victims on the property
he bought two years ago. Human remains were uncovered Sunday at one of those sites, Wright said. “We’re not even close” on identifying the remains or cause of death, he said. “We can’t tell anything.” Kohlhepp did not tell investigators who was buried there. Removing the remains to “preserve every bit of evidence” is a meticulous, time-consuming process, said Coroner Rusty Clevenger. The gravesites Kohlhepp pointed to are in addition to the body found Friday in a shallow grave at the site. Authorities identified that victim as the boyfriend of the woman found Thursday. Clevenger said he died of multiple gunshot wounds.
The Associated Press is not naming the woman because the suspect is a sex offender, though authorities have not said whether she was sexually assaulted. On Sunday, Kohlhepp appeared in an orange jumpsuit for the brief bond hearing and declined to make a statement. He didn’t have an attorney.
