At around 3:50 p.m. Local time on Sunday (Nov 6), a tornado surprised a number of Denpasar residents, especially those living in the area of Jalan Wibisana (north and west), Balun Hamlet and Mertayasa Hamlet at Pemecutan Kaja Village, North Denpasar. As a result, the roof of approximately 19 houses of local resident was damaged. Even, the roof of some houses in dense residential areas peeled off or spattered to fly. Thankfully, there were no fatalities or injuries caused by the natural disaster
According to the Acting Head of the North Denpasar Subdistrict, I Nyoman Lodra, accompanied by Division Head of Rehabilitation and Reconstruction, I Made Prapta, his party did not know for sure the number of material losses borne by the residents due to such tornado. It was said the worst damage occurred in the area of Jalan Wibisana Utara. Recorded, a dozen of house roofs were totally damaged as devastated by high winds where the most serious damage happened to the house of Agus Ariyanto, 35. Almost all of his asbestos roofs were blown off by the wind. “Just now, the victim already took about 100 sheets of asbestos. His house is the most severely damaged,” said Prapta when encountered at location.
Meanwhile, 18 homes of other residents were not too damaged or only a few sheets of the asbestos and zinc roof were damaged. The eighteen houses were respectively owned by Edi Saputro, Wardani, Made Ardika, A.A. Ketut Sudana, Dewa Putu Harun, Dewa Ketut Suardana, Sunarto, Pasek Wiranta, Lambertus, Nyoman Raka, Ketut Wati, Nyoman Misi, Mangku Subawa/Mangku Kaca, Abdul Mukid, Nyoman Subrata, Nyoman Budiarta, Wardoyo and Ketut Wiwik. According to local resident, the tornado disaster came suddenly after the rain. “Initially, it was raining but not so heavy. ,QWURGXFH JRQJ SDFHN WR RXWVLGH ZRUOG INITIALLY gong kebyar gamelan orchestra in Buleleng was played by using the gong pacek instruments. But after gong kebyar developed and went places, the instrument changed into gong gantung. As a matter of fact, to make kekebyaran gamelan music sound dynamic and fast, the instrument in use should be gamelan of gong pacek. A number of gamelan troupes in Buleleng are now encouraged to preserve the gong pacek. They begin to change the gong gantung instrument and return it to gong pacek. It is undertaken so the gong pacek becoming the characteristic of Buleleng Regency will not vanish. One of the troupes faithfully preserving the gong pacek is Tri Pitaka Gamelan Troupe from Munduk Village, Banjar Subdistrict. Even, when invited to make a performance abroad, the troupe consistently brought the set of gong pacek and not gong gantung as the other troupes. What is the difference of gong pacek from gong gantung? Actually they are distinguished by the set of gangsa, a kind of metallophone gamelan music. Blades of the gangsa instrument in the gong pacek are stuck by using nails or iron. Under the EODGHV ZHUH ÂżOOHG ZLWK SDGV VR WKH EODGHV are still able to generate a tone when they are struck. Meanwhile, the gangsa blades in the gong gantung are set up by suspending. By and large, the gangsa blades are
suspended with a plastic strap or rope made of cowhide. The tone of gangsa blades in the gong pacek will immediately vanish after being hit, while in the gong gantung will sound longer after being hit. On that account, gong pacek is judged suitable to play gamelan composition in kekebyaran genre requiring speed and dynamic rhythm. The Tri Pitaka Gamelan Troupe, Munduk Village, when invited to Hong Kong in the framework of cultural mission consistently brought along the gong pacek instrument, last Saturday. The gamelan composition they played got glorious applause in the Hon Kong Cultural Hall. Ida Rsi Agung Wayabya Suprabu Sogata Karang or Sudhyatmaka Sugriwa who led the entourage said the gamelan troupe from Munduk introduced the gong pacek and some distinctive dances of Northern Bali such as the Tarunajaya, Palawakya, Mulat Sarira Dance and gamelan compoVLWLRQV OLNH /HORQJRUDQ -D\HQJUDQD DQG Gonjang-Ganjing creation composed by Putu Putrawan. In addition, the troupe also
presented a collaboration entitled Gocek (combination of traditional games and cakgenjek a cappella). According to him, the special performance was held for school children for two days, while the Gocek Workshop was organized in a university attended by some 50 students. “Consul General Teguh Wardoyo in his speech said that he was very proud of the art performance of gong pacek from Buleleng that could jazz up the Hong Kong society,â€? said Ida Rsi. Loeana Kanginnadhi was reported to be captured by the Directorate of Criminal Detective Unit of Bali Police, Tuesday (Nov 1). This woman entrepreneur was arrested based on the allegation of money fraud worth USD 1 million reported by Putra Masagung. Even, Loeana had been named as a suspect. Ex-Pakistan leader Pervez Musharraf hit out Sunday at Afghan President Hamid Karzai for forging a training alliance with India, saying Islamabad had offered him similar help but been rebuffed. “We’ve opened up all our training institutions free of cost. Come to Pakistan and we’ll train you. Not one has come. What is his game?” Musharraf told CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS program. Musharraf, who ruled Pakistan as a military dictator and later as a civilian president between 2001 and 2008 said he had been “bending backwards” for Karzai to send people to Islamabad instead of New Delhi. He said that a phased pullout of US troops from Afghanistan, which is due to

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

health problems after their delay, the chief said. “Most of them were worried about expired visas, missing their scheduled flights and not making it back to their jobs on time but no other major problems,� Khadka said. More than 500 trekkers had already arrived in Katmandu by midmorning and the number was expected to exceed 1,000 by the end of the day, said Purna Prasad Chudal, manager at Katmandu’s domestic airport. The stranded trekkers are a variety of nationalities. Most of their porters, guides and support staff are hired in the Everest region. JAKARTA - The Indonesian population is estimated to have increased to more than 241 million this year, far exceeding the results of the 2010 census, the Population and Family Planning Board (BKKBN) said. The population exceeded the national projection of 237.6 million with an annual growth rate of 1.49 percent based on the results of the census, BKKBN Chief Secretary Sudibyo Alimoeso said here on Sunday. “The projection is based on last year’s population census so our population has increased this year,” he said. With an annual population growth of 1.49 percent, the Indonesian population increased by 3.5
million per year, he said. “So if our population stood at 237.6 million in 2010 it must grow by 3.5 million to more than 241 million this year,” he said. If the country did not keep down the population growth the population would increase to 450 million in 2045. This meant that one of every 20 people in the world would be Indonesian, he said. He said the government needed to revise the present projection of
the country’s population. “If we still rely on the previous projection we fear it will have an impact on national food supplies,” he said. He said the projection of the Indonesian population far exceeded the reality because of large deviation and therefore, it must be revised soon. The inaccurate projection of the population would have an impact on the fulfillment of basic needs such as health care, food, housing and job opportunities, he said. “Based on the calculation of food and nutrition needs, an excess of 4 million will have a farreaching effect on all population sectors,” he said.

JAKARTA - Indonesia is to host a three-day World Delta Summit in Jakarta on November 21-24, 2011 as agreed at a delta conference in Rotterdam in 2010, a spokesman for the event`s organizers said. Prof Jan Sopaheluwakan, chairman of the National Delta Summit 2011 Committee, told the press here on Thursday, the World Delta Summit 2011 was very important because it would discuss various issues and challenges to be faced by river deltas. He said Indonesia was elected to host the summit because of its rich biodiversity and, more specifically, because it had a number of fertile deltas in rivers like the Ciliwung, the Batanghari, the Mahakam, the Makassar, the Brantas and Memberamo. Indonesia was also considered able to play an important role as initiator of delta preservation efforts on a global scale, he said, adding that the summit was expected to produce a joint commitment and concrete solu-
tion to protect river deltas. Preservation of river deltas would also contribute to the conservation of human civilization in the interest of the world`s children and future generations. The summit would discuss issues related to river deltas, environmental problems, climate change and the role of river delta preservation practitioners as well as international institutions like the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, UN bodies and connecting Delta Cities. Jan said the aim of the summit was to increase the people`s awareness of the future of river deltas about which there was now increasing concern. Therefore, there was a need for greater participation of the people, governments, scientists, academics and businesspeople in river delta preservation efforts, he said. River deltas are now also among the vulnerable parts of the Earth as about 50 percent of the world`s urban population live on or around river deltas, he said.

JAKARTA - The government will give a Rp200 million bonus to every Indonesian athlete who wins a gold medal in the upcoming 26th Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in Palembang, South Sumatra, and Jakarta on November 11-22. Silver and bronze medalists meanwhile will each receive Rp50 million and Rp30 million respectively, Sports Minister Andi Mallarangeng said. “The bonus is to be given (to the athletes) individually and not on a shared basis,” he said. So, a badminton player in a singles event will get Rp200 million if he or she wins a gold medal and so will each of the players in the doubles event, he said. The minister hoped with the equal bonus for all gold medalists, Indonesian athletes would be motivated to contribute to Indonesia`s gold medal collection effort at the event. He said Indonesia was target-
ing the Sea Games overall champion title and 25 percent or more of the gold medals offered in all sport branches. The biennial event will be officially opened at Jakabaring, Palembang, South Sumatra, attended by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. In his speech he expressed hope that the athletes could show their best performance and thus contribute to the country`s glory. Strain and dry well. Combine duck stock and spice paste and bring to boil. Add salam leaves and lemongrass. Simmer for 5 minutes then add shredded banana stem and bring back to boil. Simmer for one hour until stems are soft, but still crunchy. If using cabbage, the cooking time will be much shorter. Season to taste with salt and pepper and garnish with fried shallots.

LOS ANGELES — Four decades after winning Academy Awards for its cinema lenses, Canon Inc. was back in Hollywood on Thursday, unveiling a new high-end digital video camera before an audience of some of the world’s most famous filmmakers. Fujio Mitarai, chief executive of the Japanese camera and office equipment giant, took the wraps of the movie camera, called Cinema EOS, in a packed theater on the Paramount Pictures movie studio lot. At $20,000 for the body alone, the Cinema EOS is not cheap by consumer standards but is on the low end of what professional digital film cameras cost, which can reach into the six figures. Two zoom lenses intended for movie making will go for $45,000 and $47,000. Making such costly cameras for professional users is somewhat of a departure for Canon, which makes up more than a third of its revenue from consumer electronics, and more than half from office equipment like allin-one printer-copier-fax machines. The devil was hidden in the details of clouds at the top of fresco number 20 in the cycle of the scenes in the life and death of St Francis painted by Giotto in the 13th century. The discovery was made by Italian art historian Chiara Frugone. It shows a profile of a figure with a hooked nose, a sly smile, and dark horns hidden among the clouds in the panel of the scene depicting the death of St Francis. The figure is difficult to see from the floor of the basilica but emerges clearly in close-up photography. Stoner admits he threw caution to the wind in Valencia World champion Casey Stoner said he took more risks in the last half-lap of the MotoGP season finale at Valencia than he had all year as he snatched victory from Ben Spies in a thrilling conclusion to the 2011 campaign. Stoner beat Spies over the line by just 0.015 seconds after getting a better run out of the last corner in slippery conditions. Spies had earlier escaped from a big battle for second to chase down Stoner as the rain fell - the Australian having pulled away in the earlier, less treacherous, stages. Honda rider Stoner said the weather had made it an extraordinarily tough race from the outset. “All weekend to be honest the conditions have been atrocious really,” he said. “The conditions weren’t wet, they weren’t dry, and then even when we had a dry track it wasn’t really dry, there were always some spots or some wet patches. The conditions have just been really difficult to deal with and the race was no different. “There was rain the whole race - just little bits and pieces, it would change
what corner it was and how hard it was lap by lap, so you didn’t really know how hard to go into each corner as you were approaching it.” He felt he was in complete control until the rain intensified late on. “We built up a really good lead, really comfortable, and every time I felt there was a bit too much rain I’d back off, wait for the rain to subside, they’d catch me a bit and then I’d be able to increase the lead again. And I felt pretty good out there. The bike was working well,” Stoner said. “Then it got to the point where it just started to rain heavier and heavier, and I went into a couple of corners and the rear came round on me and I just really wasn’t
too keen on pushing any harder than I was and I thought ‘at least when they catch up, if somebody does come past, I’ll keep going at what I’m comfortable with and when somebody comes past I’ll be able to see then where the limits are and if they’re getting a bit slippery or not.’ “Ben came past after I made a small mistake and hit neutral, and he was looking great - he was riding the corners really nicely, smoothly. I was able to catch him a little bit on the brakes and the acceleration points, but other than that I didn’t think I was going to get a chance to do anything and I wasn’t really willing to take any risks.” But he said he then realised that with nothing to lose, he may as well throw caution to the wind on the run to the flag. “I suppose on the last half of the last lap, I thought ‘this is it, this is the last lap of the year for us’ and I just decided to go for it and take some risks that I haven’t taken all season,” Stoner explained.

Bradl joins LCR for MotoGP Valencia test MOTO2 champion Stefan Bradl will make his MotoGP debut this week when he joins the LCR team for the post-season test at Valencia. The German will ride the Honda RC212V from the team, which said it will announce its riders for the 2012 season in the upcoming days.
