DAYTON — Actor Robert Downey Jr. made a surprise appearance at an Ohio Air Force base for a screening of his new movie. Approximately 900 military personnel and friends cheered when Downey walked into the packed theater Sunday at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton. He was there to screen his new movie, “The Judge,” which doesn’t open until Friday. The Dayton Daily News reports that Downey said he wanted to stop at the base because he’s always been drawn to all things military. He said “it’s just a way of reminding myself that there are people out there who put their lives on the line so I can go out and make movies.” In “The Judge,” Downey portrays a Chicago lawyer who confronts his past in his rural Indiana hometown.

GIANYAR - Southern Gianyar seems to have increasingly been filled with concrete. It indicates the invasion of investors wishing to build various kinds of tourism facilities, ranging from hotels, villas to restaurants. access facilitated the investors to expand their business in the coastal area of Gianyar. “As consequence, the development of tourism facilities within the past three years has grown rapidly, especially the construction of villas owned by domestic travelers. They target at coastal areas such as the Lebih, Rangkan, Saba and Cucukan,” he said. To that end, he was very confident that investment in tourism facilities in the south of Jalan Bypass IB Mantra had a huge prospect. According to him, other than investment in tourist accommodation, the investment in the tourism supporting facilities such as restaurants also showed a rapid growth. With the road access connecting to the southern region of Bali, the investment in restaurants for travelers

was quite promising. “The consideration is accessibility, in addition to the strategic location. Suppose we want to go to Sanur, it is close enough, and certainly the traffic is without congestion. That’s why I have confidence it will grow more rapidly in the future,” he added. Moreover, some coastal areas in Gianyar had been arranged, including with the establishment of jogging track along the coast and a spacious parking area. This condition was also supported by cultural and customary activities of local communities on some beaches remaining to be performed intensely and regularly. “Customary and religious activities such as melasti or other activities also affect the tourist visits,” he explained. SEMARAPURA - Land plotting project seems increasingly crazier in the region of Klungkung. As evidence, it can be seen at the frontier of Selat and Tegak village, Klungkung. Productive land in the form of paddy fields is transformed into a land plotting project. Heavy equipment was seen to start doing the activities by dredging fertile wetland.

Even, unmitigatedly around 6,000 square meters of wetland were dredged and transformed into plotting lands. Actually the Regent of Klungkung, I Nyoman Suwirta, already took a step-by-step measure by issuing a circular. Unfortunately, the circular was ignored because such an action remained to occur at some locations. As field observation on Monday (Oct 6), a unit of heavy equipment was working to dredge the land. As planned, the paddy field located on the west side of Klungkung-Besakih road section would be transformed into 30 units of land plot. More hazardously, the land around the power pole amid the paddy field was seen to have been dredged.

After the dredging of some three meters deep, the power pole might collapse. One of the workers argued if the project had made coordination with the PLN in order to remove the pole. But so far, it was not removed yet while the project was still going on. Meanwhile, the land plotting project in productive land had also been highlighted by one of the Tegak community leaders, Putu Tika Winawan. He very much deplored the dredging of the productive paddy fields into plots whereas a circular of the regent had been issued related to the matter. “If this happens, it means that the regent takes action half-heartedly or just wants to make an imaging,” he said.

With this issue, the former Deputy Chairman of the Klungkung House hoped that the Klungkung government could take decisive action against the violation. According to the rules all this time, any land conversion should go through the approval or recommendation of the Agriculture Agency. Even, Tika said that the project violating the circular of the regent should be stopped immediately. Otherwise, the circular seemed ineffective. “The regent should not take any discriminative action. Moreover, there are indications if the winning teams of the regent are also developers,” said Tika while rejecting to name the winning team of the regent doubling as a developer. (119)

Ujung Park area turned into sordid area

AMLAPURA - The rhinoceros sculpture pavilion at the Sukasada Ujung Park currently grows into a place to commit sordid act. Used condoms were found scattered around the location becoming a favorite hangout for young couples. Location in the paddy fields away from the crowds makes the place frequently visited during the day and night. In the pavilion around the rhinoceros sculpture were found used condoms alleged to have been used for making intercourse. It was very much deplored since it was a historical place and has hosted a large maligia ceremony at the Ujung Park. A trader selling around the rhinoceros sculpture, Anak Agung Kartini, 45, revealed that there were always visitors coming during the day and night to this place. “I sell here

from 07:00 in the morning to 10:00 at night. Sometimes the visitors are quire crowded,” she said, Monday (Oct 6). Spokesperson of the Karangasem Regional Secretariat, I Putu Arnawa, deplored the actions of particular individuals using the park area as a sordid place. He revealed that such a place should be appreciated as a sacred and historical place. He very much regretted the actions of some individuals committing the improper actions at the location. “The government also deplored as the place was misused. Please respect the sacredness,” he hoped. To get to the rhinoceros sculpture, visitors should pass through a damaged road surrounded by paddy fields. This location is frequented by young couples for making love (dating) both during the day and night. Aston Denpasar visited orphanage for Ied Al-Adha

DENPASAR - Aston Denpasar believe sharing and giving are the most important things in life. After all, as the old saying goes, man (or woman) is not an island. The time dedicated to Eid al-Adha is the perfect opportunity to spread the joy to the people around us. On 2nd October, Aston Denpasar Hotel & Convention Center held a Corporate Social Responsibility event with K.H. Mas Mansyur Orphanage House on the street Jl. Tukad Pule 7A in the district of Sesetan. The hotel staff and management brought presents and donations in the form of staple foods, cleaning equipment and cheering up the children at the orphanage. The event, which opened at 4:30 pm, was attended by 20 members of staff representing each department and 22 children from the orphanage. The event started with praying together, Rebana performance, and games. Children presented Rebana performance with three songs, the last of which was Insya Allah which was made popular by Maher Zain. The games that entertained the children were times and times, remember your friend’s name, and singing the Qur’an Surah. They enjoyed the games and prizes.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

SAN FRANCISCO — Smartphones, tablets and other gadgets aren’t just changing the way we live and work. They are shaking up Silicon Valley’s balance of power and splitting up businesses. Long-established companies such as Hewlett-Packard Co. and eBay Inc. are scrambling to regain their footing to better compete against mobile-savvy trendsetters like Apple and Google, as well as rising technology stars that have built businesses around “cloud computing.” That term covers a swath of Internet-driven services that shifted technology from the days software users paid a one-time fee to buy and install programs on individual machines where they also stored all their data on hard drives. But with the advent of the “cloud,” people can now rent software to use over the Internet. This enables customers to access documents, pictures and other vital information from any kind of Internet-connected device, a convenience that’s become a necessity during the past few years as people increasingly rely on smartphones and tablets instead of laptop and desktop computers. Business software makers such as Salesforce.com Inc., VMware Inc. and Workday Inc. built their entire business models around the cloud. All have delivered impressive revenue growth that turned their stocks into hot commodities. Online storage services Dropbox and Box have yet to go public. But they have been minted with big valuations from venture capital-

ists who believe they will thrive amid the increased usage of mobile devices and cloud-computing services. Meanwhile, Apple Inc. and Google Inc. are prospering from the rise of mobile devices now that their competing software systems — iOS and Android — run most of the smartphones and tablets in the world. Apple now reigns as the world’s most valuable company at roughly $600 billion while Google ranks third at about $400 billion. Google is developing another way to make money off the cloudcomputing movement: leasing some of the servers in its data centers to mobile application and Web service providers. Amazon. com Inc. has been doing the same thing for an even longer period of time, enabling providers to develop and introduce new cloud computing services without having to spend a lot of money on servers sold by the likes of HP, IBM Corp. and Oracle Corp. The rise in mobile popularity has taken a big bite out of personal

computer sales. That’s slammed Silicon Valley pioneer HP, once the world’s biggest seller of PCs. Since Apple ignited the tablet market with the 2010 release of the iPad, the annual revenue in HP’s personal computer division has plunged by more than 20 percent. That downturn is a key reason why HP’s market value has fallen by about $55 billion, or 40 percent, since the iPad’s release. In an effort to adapt, HP said Monday that it will split off its PC and printer operations and form a separate company tailored to business software and services for the cloud-computing age. The spin-off is something HP originally explored three years ago only to back off after CEO Meg Whitman concluded the company would be stronger if it held on to the PC division. That conclusion reflected a long-standing belief that companies are generally better off when they have an array of products to appeal to the various needs of different customers.

SAN FRANCISCO — Personal computer sales have been in a slump for years, as customers flock to increasingly powerful smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices. Now HewlettPackard, the Silicon Valley stalwart that was once the world’s biggest seller of personal computers, is splitting off its PC and printing businesses. It’s the latest shakeup in a tech industry that’s being reshaped by the mobile revolution. IBM sold its PC business years ago. Dell took its struggles private. Can an HP spinoff focused on personal computing thrive? “There’s a significant transformation going on in that industry, and maybe now HP can make its move,” said Forrester tech analyst Peter Burris, one of several analysts who say the iconic tech giant will need to get better at building and selling mobile gadgets if it wants the new spinoff to succeed. HP has stumbled in previous efforts to sell those devices. HP’s split is a sign that CEO Meg Whitman sees more growth and profit opportunity in selling commercial tech products, including data-center hardware, business software and cloud services, some analysts say. That’s the business she plans to lead, as chief executive of a new company dubbed Hewlett-Packard Enterprise. That puts more pressure on the HP Inc. spinoff, which will be led by current PC and printing executive Dion Weisler as CEO. Though it was once the world leader in both segments, HP is now No. 2 to China’s Lenovo in PC sales. Tablets now out-sell laptop computers. And no other major U.S. tech company is focused on selling only PCs. Apple Inc.’s growth in recent years has been fueled by the phenomenal success of its iPhone and iPad devices. Dell also sells commercial computer hardware and software. Even Lenovo is purchasing IBM’s server business and taking over the Motorola smartphone division from Google Inc. PC sales aren’t going away entirely, to be sure. There are still some cases where PCs are more useful than smaller-screen devices, especially in the workplace, said Bob O’Donnell of TECHnalysis Research. The industry sold more than 310 million desktop and laptop computers last year, and one out of six were sold by Palo Alto, California-based HP. But global sales fell 10 percent in 2013 and are likely to fall another 4 percent this year, according to the IDC research firm. PC sales should level off in 2015, forecasts O’Donnell. “They can be profitable,” he said, “but it’s a stable, flat kind of market.” Printer ink has been a major source of profit for HP in years past. But printing also is a stagnating business, as more people store photos and files online and view them primarily on their phones and tablets. Even so, tying the printing business to PCs should provide a stable source of revenue for HP Inc. for some years to come, said tech analyst Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights and Strategy. HP also could expand that business to include 3D printing systems and home networks for Internet-enabled thermostats and other gadgets, since many printers today are part of a home network, he added. Jettisoning PCs doesn’t necessarily make Hewlett-Packard Enterprise is a slam dunk. Analysts say HP has some good datacenter products, but Whitman faces challenges in upgrading its commercial software and technology services businesses. “Does this mean a new dawn is here for Palo Alto?” asked Burris. “No, it doesn’t. It means that HP is going to have to do a lot of hard work to prove itself.” Hewlett-Packard has posted revenue declines in 11 of the past 12 quarters and laid off tens of thousands of people in recent years as it attempts to cut costs. During its most recent quarter HP reported revenue of $27.6 billion, a 1 percent annual gain. It marked HP’s first year-over-year increase in quarterly revenue since late 2011. Printers and PCs contributed roughly half the company’s annual revenue, with the rest coming from commercial computer systems, software and technology services. HP first considered breaking off the PC unit three years ago, when Leo Apotheker was CEO. But the idea was controversial and Whitman rejected it after she took his place in 2011 and launched a lengthy turnaround. She said Monday that HP has now shored up its business enough to support the split. The company believes the two new units will be worth more separately and be able to grow more quickly apart than they can together.

The potential as ceramic producer does not only lie in the production of ceramics for household needs, but also in the art of ceramics making as it can also become an attraction of its own. To display the ceramic products by the artists of Pejaten village and the entire archipelago, the village located in Kediri subdistrict has established a ceramics museum. It will become the first ceramics museum and the only one in Indonesia. The museum operator, Putu Oka Mahendra, explained the museum building had currently been established and his party just needed to organize the items. In the near future, he said the museum was ready to be operated. Establishment of the ceramics museum was expected to attract travelers to come to Pejaten village. In the operation, other than displaying the ceramic works of art, the museum would also provide the opportunity for ceramic artists at Pejaten village to sell their products. Thus, in addition to enjoying

the ceramic artworks of the masters of the homeland and the ancient ceramics, travelers could also buy typical ceramics of Pejaten. NEGARA - Exasperation of the Cita Nirmala Sari hamlet residents, Yehembang village, against the sea sand theft action seemed to culminate following the demolition of the portal on the road to the beach by an unknown person. On Sunday night (Oct 5), two people coming down to the beach by a pick-up and small truck alleged to take sea sand were raided by surrounding residents. The men known to local residents with initial W and M were secured and interrogated by residents. As information gathered on Monday (Oct 6), the residents originally knew two trucks crossed on the beach without turning on their lamp. Dozens of residents having gathered around the beach then raided and intercepted the two trucks. Being angry with the sea sand dredging, the residents surrounded the two men. Actually the residents wanted to prosecute them in appropriate with the agreed bylaw. However, since there was no sea sand in the two trucks as the evidence, a tension once came up with the two men under siege. The two arrested men denied if they were accused of looking for sea sand. They claimed to only net fish. Local residents did not believe

and got tempered because they did not find any net or other fishing gear. To prevent the case from escalating, the official of local hamlet finally contacted to Mendoyo Police. Few moments later, some police officers came to mediate. Since there was no sea sand transported, both men were finally released, while other residents dismissed themselves. Headman of Yehembang, I Made Semadi, confirmed the incident. His residents intercepted to check whether the truck coming down to the beach conveyed sea sand or not. Since they did not convey any sea sand, they were finally released. He suggested his residents if there were any violations against the law it should be reported to police station. Meanwhile, Chief of Mendoyo Police, Wayan Sinaryasa, told reporters that his party had received the report of Pasar hamlet chief regarding the allegation of sea sand theft on Yehembang Beach and the suspects were secured by residents. Subdistrict police had deployed its village police personnel to mediate the problem. According to him, the problem was already mediated and the two men were not proved to have taken sea sand. However, the defendant put the repayment of the installment and the interest of the revolving fund for the period of 2005-2010 into single account of the saving and loan account owned by the Jagadhita Cooperatives in the BPD. With his authority, the defendant also used some of the funds without re-distributing it and did not report the received installment fund or the interests. “Even, some amount

was lent personally and received by Kencana Cooperative without going through the procedures,” affirmed the prosecutor. In terms of financial management, the borrowing of some amount of the money, repayment of principal installment and loan interest were not returned by the defendant. TOKYO - The Bank of Japan on Tuesday struck a less optimistic tone on its view of the world’s number three economy, but held off launching fresh monetary easing measures after a two-day meeting. The central bank, which has been upbeat on Japan’s prospects, flagged housing and industrial production as weak spots in a statement outlining its unanimous decision. It added that an uptick in business sentiment has “paused” on the back of an April sales tax hike that led to a sharp contraction in second-quarter gross domestic product. “Japan’s economy has continued to recover moderately as a trend,” the BoJ statement said, but it noted “some weakness, particularly on the production side” as demand dived after the introduction of April’s sales tax hike. The BoJ said it was still on track to hit a 2.0 percent inflation target, seen as key to reversing years of falling prices and tepid growth. Investors will now turn their focus to governor Haruhiko Kuroda’s post-meeting comments as speculation increases that the BoJ will be forced to act as the

economy continues to struggle. “Policymakers are slowly but surely acknowledging the recent sluggishness of the economy,” said Marcel Thieliant from Capital Economics. “The Bank’s more cautious stance will certainly trigger speculation that additional easing may already be announced at the upcoming meeting at the end of this month.” The dollar-yen rate slid to 108.61 after the announcement, from above the 109 level earlier Tuesday, while the euro fell to 137.14 yen against 137.64 yen earlier in the day. Kuroda’s upbeat take on Japan’s economy has appeared increasingly at odds with the official data, as Japan’s economy suffered in the April-June quarter its deepest contraction since the 2011 quake-tsunami disaster. Japan’s top central banker has given little indication he will soon increase the BoJ’s assetpurchasing stimulus -- similar to

the Federal Reserve’s quantitative easing -- saying the impact of the sales tax hike has not been as bad as expected. The tax rise was seen as crucial to addressing a mammoth public debt but economists warned it could derail a budding recovery in an economy beset by years of deflation. The 1.8 percent dip in gross domestic product -- or a 7.1 percent contraction at an annualised rate -- gave the clearest picture yet of the tax hike’s impact, and threw into question Tokyo’s plans for another rise next year. Millions of shoppers made a last-minute dash to stores before prices went up on April 1, which was followed by a slump in spending. Despite its generally positive take on the economy, the BoJ has lowered its growth forecast for the current fiscal year to March to 1.0 percent, well down from a 1.5 percent prediction in late 2013.

SEOUL - Samsung Electronics on Tuesday flagged a near 60 percent onyear plunge in its third quarter operating profit, as its key smartphone sector continued to struggle in the face of increased competition. Operating profit for the July-September period was estimated at 4.1 trillion won ($3.8 billion), down 59.6 percent from the third quarter last year, the company said. Sales were estimated at 47 trillion won, down 20.4 percent from 2013. While smartphone shipments increased slightly, “operating margin declined due to increased marketing expenditures and a lowered average selling price, driven by reduced proportional shipments of high-end models coupled with price decreases for older smartphone models”, the South Korean electronics giant said in an explanatory note. The company warned that uncertainty in the mobile sector would carry through into the fourth quarter, although it promised a new line-up of top-end smartphones featuring “new materials and innovative designs”. In July, Samsung had reported a 20 percent drop in net profit for the second quarter, and its shares are sitting at a two-year low. The mobile market, which has been the key driver of Samsung profits in recent years, has become increasingly saturated, while competition has intensified from cheaper Chinese handset makers such as Huawei and Lenovo. The world’s largest smartphone maker has a diverse product line ranging from memory chips to home appliances, but more than half of its profits are generated by mobile devices.

The explanatory note said shipments and profits in the company’s display panel business had also fallen in the third quarter due to weaker demand in the mobile sector. It did not provide a breakdown of profit estimates by businesses. Samsung’s smartphone profits have been hit at both ends of the spectrum. Its previously all-conquering flagship Galaxy S series has come under renewed pressure with the release of the popular iPhone 6 from arch-rival Apple, which has also challenged Samsung’s dominance of the oversized smartphone market with the introduction of the largerscreen iPhone 6 Plus. In the low- to mid-range smartphone segment, the challenge has come from Chinese handset makers who have begun to make substantial inroads into Samsung’s market share. According to International Data Corp., a record-high 295.3 million smartphones were shipped worldwide in the second quarter. Samsung remained the world’s top vendor, moving 74 million handsets, but saw its overall market share slip seven percentage points to 25.2 percent, while China’s Huawei nearly doubled its shipments from the same quarter a year ago. Samsung said Tuesday it would bring out a new series of mid- to low-end smartphones in the fourth quarter “with strong competitive positioning on both hardware specifications and price”. Last month, Samsung brought forward the launch of its oversized Galaxy Note 4 smartphone and got it into Chinese and South Korean stores ahead of its sale in 140 other countries. It was the first time a flagship Samsung product had gone on sale in China ahead of other markets.

KPK interrogates companies’ directors over Hambalang case

JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigators questioned the directors of several companies here on Tuesday for their alleged involvement in the corruption case related to the Hambalang sports complex project. “They are questioned as witnesses for the suspect, Machfud Suroso,” the anti-graft body’s spokesman, Priharsa Nugraha stated. The directors who were grilled by the KPK included Eko Novianto of PT Multi Dwikarya Cipta, Suhandoyo of PT Rembang Jaya Utama, Endang Sudaryanti of PT Sentosa Jaya Makmur, Erwin Soentoro of PT Trisindo Pama, Heru Santoso of PT Prima Karya Gumilang, Sofian Tahar of PT Harapan Sumber Rejeki, Susiliya Supana of PT Indo Prima Bajaraksa, and Zulkifli of PT Global Pasific Pratama. tioned in connection with the role played by fictitious companies in the bidding of the Hambalang sports complex project, he revealed. Machfud Suroso, the director of PT Dutasari Citra Laras, had been named suspect in November 2013. He has been accused of embezzling funds worth Rp28.8 billion while his company received a payment of Rp170.39 billion for the Hambalang sports complex project. The KPK has also dragged the former chairman of the Democratic Party Anas Urbaningrum to court for his involvement in this case.

The person with the initials “Sr” hailed from Sunju Village located

in the border of Palu City and Sigi District, while Fr belonged to Jalan Suprapto of Palu City. Moreover, the terror suspect “An” worked as a technician in a vehicle service center in Jalan Kelor of Palu City. He allegedly disassembled and sold stolen motorcycles to raise funds for their activities. The police revealed that Pd, who lived in Tinggede Village of Sigi District, is a student of one of the private colleges in Palu City. Utoro stated that all the four were stalked by police officers as they were conducting suspicious activities.

He remarked that the four alleged terrorists are being detained in the Central Sulawesi Regional Police Headquarter for interrogation. Utoro noted that the four suspects have played a role in fund-raising activities and have helped alleged terrorists in Poso District. The police arrested the persons after investigating seven alleged terrorist members in Palu City who were arrested several weeks ago while travelling to Poso District. Nurse in Spain gets Ebola, raising global concern

MADRID — In a case underscoring the perils of caring for Ebola patients, a nurse in Spain who cared for an Ebola patient has come down with the disease — the first known transmission outside West Africa during the current epidemic. Her husband and a second nurse who treated the patient are now in quarantine, Spanish officials said Tuesday. A man who arrived on a flight from Nigeria has also been quarantined, they said. Public Health Director Mercedes Vinuesa told Parliament that authorities were making a list of other people who may have had contact with the nurse, who has not been publicly identified. The couple has no children. The Health Ministry’s chief coordinator for health alerts and emergencies, Fernando Simon, told Cadena SER radio that the nurse was in stable condition and her life not in any immediate danger. Health officials said she had no symptoms besides the fever. News reports said she was 44. Simon said her husband was “OK and relatively calm.” There was a low risk that some people in contact with the nurse could develop Ebola,

Simon said, but he insisted this did not represent a public health threat. He disputed critics who said authorities were slow to react to the case. The nurse, was hospitalized on Sunday, had helped treat Manuel Garcia Viejo, a Spanish priest returned from Sierra Leone who died Sept. 25 in another Madrid hospital designated for treating Ebola patients. She had changed a diaper for the patient and collected material from his room following his death. She then went on vacation. Vinuesa said Spain had several therapies available and began applying them Monday, but gave no further details. She had also assisted treating 75-year-old Spanish priest Miguel Pajares, also flown back to Spain from Liberia. He died after being treated with the experimental Ebola medicine ZMapp. Garcia Viejo, who was in charge of the San Juan del Dios hospital in Lunsar, Sierra Leone, was not given the treatment because worldwide supplies ran out. The virus that causes Ebola spreads only through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person showing symptoms. WHO estimates the latest Ebola outbreak has killed more than 3,400 people.

HONG KONG — Crowds of protesters who filled Hong Kong’s streets with demands for a greater say in choosing the territory’s leader thinned dramatically Tuesday after student leaders and the government agreed to hold talks in the increasingly frustrated city. Just a couple days after tens of thousands of demonstrators thronged the city’s streets, only a few hundred protesters were scattered across the city’s three main protest areas. On some stretches of the blockaded six-lane highway that cuts through the heart of Hong Kong’s business district, just a few dozen students remained, once again snarling traffic and slowing commuters. One young protester sleepily brushed his teeth as rush hour began, and nearby a sleeping demonstrator leaned back in a nylon chair, his mouth open and his eyeglasses askew. Despite the dwindling numbers of activists on the streets, protest leaders insisted the movement was far from defeated, and vowed to walk away from negotiations if the police used force to clear away the remaining demonstrators. Michael Leung, 14, who was in his school uniform and doing his homework on the concrete, said it was important to have people at the sites at all times. It was the third night he had come to the protest zone after

school. “You see now the number of people is decreasing because there has been no big action from the government and the police,” he said. “But I think if the government or police want to clear this area, then the people will come out again.” At the government headquarters, which had its entrance blocked by protesters for a week, about half a dozen students still manned barricades. Eight policemen stood nearby, chatting among themselves. Late Monday, Lau Kong-wah, the territory’s undersecretary of constitutional affairs, said the government and students had agreed on terms for talks, saying the two sides would enter discussions on an equal footing. Lester Shum, a leader of the Hong Kong Federation of Students, confirmed the agreement, but said they had not discussed or reached a consensus on the agenda.

A date for the meeting had not been set. The questions now are how long the demonstrators are willing to continue their protests — and how long until the government removes them. “We are safe (from a crackdown) for the moment,” said Joseph Cheng, a specialist in Chinese politics at the City University of Hong Kong who has deep ties to Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement. “Now that there are negotiations going on — or at least negotiations to discuss negotiations — we expect that the police will not clear the protesters for a few days.” But with the authorities unlikely to agree to the protesters’ immediate demands, including the resignation of Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying, any talks could quickly collapse. “The real test is what happens when the negotiations break down,” said Cheng.

Andy Murray does not want to become too fixated with his chances of securing a place in next month’s ATP World Tour Finals in London despite ending his 15-month title drought recently. The Briton was in danger of missing out on playing in front of his home fans as he slipped out of the top 10 in the Race to London after failing to reach a final for more than a year following his triumph at Wimbledon in July 2013. But after winning the Shenzhen Open and reaching the semi-finals of the China Open over the last few weeks, the 27-year-old Scot is once again in contention for London after climbing to ninth in the Race. Only the top eight players in the Race will play in London but Murray said continuing his return to form remains a priority rather than securing a place at the seasonending event. “My schedule was going to be dictated more how I felt and what I wanted from the end of the year rather than just trying to play to get into the Tour Finals, because I don’t think that’s necessarily the right way to go about it,” Murray said as he prepared to face Georgia’s Teymuraz Gabashvili at the Shanghai Masters on Tuesday. “But the reason I came here to China was to try to get some momentum, try to win some more

matches, get into the latter stages, play against the best players, and get used to playing at that level consistently again between now and the end of the year. “But if I play well, I’ll give myself a chance at getting to the O2 (the World Tour Finals venue). When I step on the court, that really shouldn’t be something I’m thinking about.” Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have already secured their place in London. With five spots still up for grabs, Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka is well placed to join them. TOKYO — A new round of bidding for construction of the main stadium for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics will delay the start of the problematic project. Some of the bids were reviewed by someone in the decision committee before all bids were in, a violation of the rules, Japan Sport Council official Takayuki Ito said on Tuesday. Another round of bidding is due this month. But he said construction will be fast-tracked, and the stadium will meet its March 2019 deadline. “We need to revamp the whole system of planning for the Olympic stadium,” he said, acknowledging there were too many problems. Ito declined to say who broke the rules, but suggested it was an error and not a malicious act. Plans for the stadium, designed by award-winning British-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid, have been plagued by problems, including complaints from some prominent architects, who say the design is

too big and expensive. The 80,000-seat, futuristic design to replace the National Stadium was initially projected to cost 130 billion yen ($1.3 billion), but the estimate quickly ballooned to more than double that. It is expected to be scaled down. There have been other problems in the bidding as well. In the first round of bidding, announced in March, all the bids surpassed the estimated costs and were rejected in May. In June, it was found

that some bids were lower than the level set as the standard. A month later, complaints of bid-rigging surfaced. But an internal investigation in July and August found no evidence of bidrigging, the council said in a statement last month. Ito denied any scandal in the lowest bid getting rejected, and said it did not meet the required standard. Demolition of the old stadium will start in the middle of December, delayed by more than two months from the initial schedule.

Marussia asks for patience over Bianchi condition updates The Marussia Formula 1 team has asked for patience over updates about Jules Bianchi’s condition after his Japanese Grand Prix crash. Bianchi underwent surgery in Mie General Medical Centre in Yokkaichi on Sunday, having sustained a severe head injury when he went off and hit a tractor that was recovering Adrian Sutil’s crashed Sauber. No further information regarding Bianchi’s condition has been issued, but he was due to be moved to intensive care after the operation. A statement from Marussia said “with regard to the communication of information regarding Jules’ medical condition, we will respect, and be guided by, the wishes of the Bianchi family. “Together with Jules’ care, they will remain our highest priority. “Therefore, we would ask for patience and understanding with regard to further medical updates, which will be communicated in conjunction with the Mie General Medical Centre in Yokkaichi, where Jules is being treated, when they feel it is appropriate.” Members of both the Marussia team and Ferrari - which has supported Bianchi’s career through its driver academy programme - remain at the hospital.

SAO PAULO — Aecio Neves turned Brazil’s politics on its head with his surprise showing in the first round of presidential voting but his toughest task lies ahead — defeating incumbent Dilma Rousseff and her juggernaut Workers’ Party which has governed for 12 years. The business-friendly candidate who only surged in the final week of the campaign came within 8 percentage points of Rousseff in Sunday’s election and has momentum and a strong center-right party on his side. The challenge for Neves, who was born into affluence and political power, will be to connect with the millions of poor Brazilians who have directly benefited from Rousseff’s policies. “He needs a more popular dialogue to build a bridge to those voters,” said Mauricio Moura, a Brazilian pollster and professor of political strategy at George Washington University. The 54year-old economist has three weeks to do it. Neves defied expectations in Sunday’s first-round vote, finishing second with 34 percent to Rousseff’s 42 percent. Socialist Party candidate Marina Silva, who at one point led Rousseff in polling, finished third at 21 percent
