A court official told AFP Bieber must pay a Can$750 (US$600) fine for careless driving. A more serious charge of dangerous driving, however, was withdrawn, while Bieber received an absolute discharge for the assault, meaning he was found guilty but no conviction will show up on his record. The crash occured in September near his hometown of Stratford, Ontario where Bieber was visiting family with his on-and-off-again girlfriend Selena Gomez.

Bieber, 21, was accused of ramming his All-Terrain Vehicle into a minivan driven by a photographer and then getting into a “physical altercation” with the driver, according to police. The inability to pay for such ceremonies is in fact closely tied to the hegemony of the wealthy who tend to hold very elaborate ceremonies.

However as Prof. Dr. Ida Bagus Raka Suardana says, ngerit or mass cremation ceremonies offer an alternative which could address the issue of cost, because each person pays much less if the hold an individual ceremony. “The cost of the ritual paraphernalia and other related costs can be shared. Suppose a single family carries out such a ceremony on their own, they would have to at least spend at least IDR 15 million for the offerings alone, not to mention the amount spent on providing food and beverage for those in attendance. Bamboo gamelan makers hard time finding bamboo

SINGARAJA - Lately craftsmen of bamboo gamelan instruments, known in Balinese as gerantang are having trouble finding the particular kind of bamboo that they need in part because tho sbaboo is being used to make ladders to pick clove. The most suitable type of bamboo for making this gamelan instrument aged tabah bamboo or Gigantochloa nigrociliata (Buese) . This kind of bamboo cannot be dried the way other kinds can be, but must dry where is stands. Another challenge in acquiring this type of bamboo is that it is far more expensive that most other kinds. Ketut Jingga is a bamboo gamelan crafters in Dajan Margi hamlet, Sari Mekar village, Buleleng. On Sunday (June 7), he said that these days he is having a lot of trouble finding this bamboo. Previously he could use the bamboo that grew in his village, but nowadays it is brought in from other villages in Buleleng. A seven meter stalk of tabah bamboo costs about IDR 50,000 and Jingga, who has been running his business since the 1960’s needs to have a large stock of bamboo. “These days, bamboo is widely used to make ladders for picking cloves. As a result, it is rather difficult to obtain this raw material. Thankfully, we still have a stock of bamboo poles, so our production is surviving,” he said. Jingga who won the Wijaya Kusuma art award for Buleleng at the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) in 2012 added that although the bamboo is hard to get a hold of, the

demand for his gamelan remains high. He has not only been meeting demands for this gamelan in Buleleng but also produces them for some regions in Bali. Ketut Jingga’s gamelan are also bought by foreign travellers passing through Buleleng. Currently these gamelan with painted pelawah are sold for between IDR 400,000 and IDR 500,000 per set. The gamelan set with carved pelawah is offered for up to IDR 1 million per set. Each week he can sell up to three sets. This venture can therefore support the life of his children and family members. “The prices vary. On average we make a sale every week, and the demand seems to be increasing,” he said. Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Local rhythms and tourist sites in Old Havana

HAVANA — In some destinations, tourist areas are located far from the rhythms of everyday life. But visitors who wander through Old Havana — Habana Vieja, as locals call it — can’t help but get a sense of how ordinary Cubans live. You’ll see uniformed school children, street vendors selling colorful fruits and peppers from carts, clotheslines hung from patios, and small dogs sunning themselves on sidewalks. There are lines at government-run offices for phone service and banking, and bicycle taxis ferrying passengers through the narrow streets. You might hear a rooster crow, a caged songbird, salsa music or the engine of an old car roaring as it trundles past. Watch out for pipes jutting from windows: Water may pour out from housework being done inside. Nearly every street seems to have a sign attesting to something of cultural or historic significance. O’Reilly Street, for example, named for an Irishman who became a leader in the

Spanish colonies and married into a prominent Cuban family, bears a plaque with a rather poetic allusion to the histories of Ireland and Cuba: “Two island peoples in the same sea of struggle and hope.” Many buildings are terribly rundown. It’s not unusual to see the sky through a roofless stone facade or piles of rubble in the street. But other sites have been beautifully restored, especially around the squares in the eastern half of the neighborhood bordering the water. Spend a few hours walking through Plaza Vieja, Plaza de Armas, Plaza San Francisco and Cathedral Square. Many museums and other attractions are located here, including the Museum of Rum, which offers visitors a swig at the end of the tour, and the

Ambos Mundos Hotel, which has an excellent short tour of a room where Ernest Hemingway lived and wrote. Another cluster of major attractions is located in the western half of the neighborhood, near the Prado or Paseo de Marti, a boulevard that divides Old Havana from Central Havana. The Prado itself is worth a stroll, especially on Sundays when it hosts an outdoor art market. Adjacent to the Prado is the Parque Central (Central Park), home to a statue of revolutionary hero Jose Marti. A block over, between Agramonte and Avenida de Las Misiones (Belgica), you’ll find the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, with extraordinary collections of Cuban art in one building and international art in another, and the Museo de la Revolucion, with a tank and the famous boat “Granma” used by Fidel Castro outdoors and a wall of cartoons inside called “Cretins’ Corner” mocking American presidents Ronald Reagan and both George Bushes.

Watch out for hustlers near the Parque Central. Resist all invitations from overly friendly strangers who invite you to a bar or to buy cigars. But if you need a drink, choices abound, including a trio of historic spots. Hemingway frequented El Floridita (located at Obispo No. 557) and La Boguedita del Medio (Empedrado No. 207), while Sloppy Joe’s, where the messy ground beef concoction supposedly was invented, was a setting for the film “Our Man in Havana,” based on the Graham Greene novel about a bumbling spy. But more enjoyable than the tourist crowds and watery mojitos at La Bodeguita are the relaxed outdoor cafes in the old squares on the other side of Habana Vieja. Nothing is lovelier than sipping a Cristal beer in Plaza San Francisco or Plaza Vieja in early evening, when the day’s heat dissipates and sweet sounds from a threepiece band playing “Guantanamera” drift across the square. Exports of Tuna up 10.17 percent

DENPASAR - Bali exported US$25.55 million worth of fresh and frozen tuna fish in the first four months of the year or an increase of 10.17 percent from US$23.19 million in the same period last year. Data at the provincial industry and trade office of Bali showed that the tuna export value contributed 15.71 percent to the province’s total export earning of US$162.7 million in the same period. Bali exported 4,552 tons of fresh and frozen tuna fish or 24 percent of Bali’s total export volume in the January-April period of this year. The export volume of tuna fish shrank 24 percent from 5,996 tons in the same period last year. Head of the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) of Bali Panasunan Siregar said fish and shrimp are among Bali’s main export commodities. Other export commodities of Bali are non knitted garments, gold ornament, timber products and furniture. The main export destination countries are Japan, the United States and Singapore. (ant)

This event will be held across four different divisions: Boys/Girls U/16 as well as Mens/Womens Open which will allow not only Asia’s best open surfers to compete for precious Asian Surf Champion (ASC) points but also allow the kids of the future to gain valuable competition experience. Quiksilver athlete; Dede Suryana, who was the 2014 ASC Champion and WSL’s QS Komune Bali Pro 2014 winner cannott hide his excitement about the upcoming series. “2014 was a highlight year of my life, now with the ASC/ISC trophy with me and Quiksilver making a contest at my favorite wave in Bali… I am ready for the challenge of defending my title.” In the junior division, Rio Waida, will represent Quiksilver in the U/16 Boys category, “The sandbar and river mouth are two of my favorite surf breaks. 5th person dies of MERS virus in South Korea

SEOUL — A fifth person in South Korea has died of the MERS virus, as the government announced Sunday that it was strengthening measures to stem the spread of the disease and public fear. Sixty-four people in South Korea have been infected by Middle East Respiratory Syndrome since last month in the largest outbreak outside the Middle East. Hundreds of schools have closed and more than 2,000 people are isolated at their homes or in facilities after having contact with patients infected with the virus, health officials said. Acting Prime Minister Choi Kyung-hwan said Sunday that there was no reason to believe that the virus would significantly spread further in the country. “So far, all the MERS cases have been hospital-associated, and there has been no case of an infection in other social settings. We think we have a chance at putting the outbreak under total control,” Choi told a news conference. While the virus has no vaccine, health experts say it spreads through close contact with infected people and not through the air. The U.N. health agency has reported that there’s no evidence yet in South Korea of “sustained transmission in the community.” Departing from its earlier policy, the government announced the names of the 24 hospitals where the MERS patients have been diagnosed or had been treated before their condition was confirmed. This will allow people who have visited those facilities in recent weeks to report themselves if they are showing symptoms similar to MERSrelated illnesses, Choi said. While the government had earlier identified one hospital in a city south of Seoul where the first MERS case was confirmed, and another in southern Seoul that has been a significant source of infections, it had been reluctant to release the full list of hospitals over concerns that it would cause a disruption in services if people started avoiding them. Choi said the government will also strengthen its monitoring of the hundreds of undiagnosed patients who are quarantined at their homes because officials believe they might have contracted the virus. It includes tracking their whereabouts through cellphone signals. US economy looks stronger as hiring, wages pick up WASHINGTON - US businesses accelerated hiring and raised wages at a faster pace last month in a fresh sign the country’s economy is rebounding from the winter stall. In a report that gives the Federal Reserve more reason to move toward an interest rate hike in the coming months, the Labor Department said Friday that the economy pumped out 280,000 jobs in May, far more than expected and well above the past year’s pace of 251,000 a month. Wages, which have been frustratingly flat since the country’s emergence from the 2008-09 recession, also picked up in an indication that the labor market is tightening. While the unemployment rate ticked up slightly to 5.5 percent, analysts said that represented not

more job losses but a surge in the number of new entrants and returnees to the labor market, with most but not all of them finding jobs. That was backed by rise in the rate of workforce participation to 62.9 percent, still low by historical standards but up 0.1 percentage point in each of the last two months. “The US labor market finally came out of its winter doldrums,” said Harm Bandholz, chief US economist at UniCredit. The May report showed that service industries are easily offsetting the heavy layoffs in the oil industry,

due to the crash in the price of crude oil, and weak hiring in manufacturing, which has been hurt by the strong dollar. Ian Shepherdson of Pantheon Macroeconomics noted that, on top of the May numbers, the job creation figures for the previous two months were revised upwards by a net 32,000. “If payrolls continue to rise at anything like this pace -- and every indicator we follow says they will... the unemployment rate will continue to trend downwards rapidly,” he said. Shepherdson and others said the May report raises the likelihood that the Federal Reserve will soon launch into a series

Hollande, Merkel, Tsipras in new Greek debt crisis talks

PARIS - German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande and Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras spoke by phone Saturday to discuss Greece’s debt crisis as time runs out to reach a deal, a French diplomatic source said. “They took stock of the situation to help move forward the negotiations between Greece and the three (creditor) institutions,” the source said. The three-way talks came on the eve of a G7 summit in Germany that looks set to be overshadowed by the Greek drama, even though Tsipras himself is not attending the highlevel gathering. With no deal on the table yet and billions of euros in loan repayments due, fears are rising of a possible Greek debt default that could see the country crashing out of the eurozone. Tsipras on Friday urged the country’s international creditors -- the International Monetary Fund, the European Union and the European Central Bank -- to withdraw “absurd” demands for further austerity cuts in return for unlocking the final 7.2 billion euros ($8 billion) in bailout funds. Athens also ramped up pressure in the make-or-break negotiations after postponing a key loan repayment to the IMF due Friday, opting instead to bundle four IMF loan payments totalling 1.6 billion euros into a single one due by the end of June. Israeli leader says world silent on Gaza rocket attacks

JERUSALEM — Israel’s prime minister on Sunday slammed the international community’s silence over recent rocket attacks from Gaza and warned that a strong reprisal could be forthcoming. Benjamin Netanyahu said he hasn’t heard a word of condemnation from the world about three rocket attacks from Gaza over the past two weeks. The rockets did not cause any injury or harm but disrupted the quiet in southern Israel that has mostly prevailed since last summer’s war between Hamas and Israel. “It will be interesting to see if this silence continues when we use all our strength in exercising our right to defend ourselves,” Netanyahu said at his weekly Cabinet meeting. “It should be clear: the hypocrisy that is sweeping the world will not chain our hands from defending the citizens of Israel.” The Israeli military carried out an airstrike in the Gaza Strip early Sunday in response to the latest rocket attack from the Hamas-ruled territory. The projectile landed in an open area and there were no injuries or damage reported from the rocket attack or the airstrike. A local jihadi organization that supports the Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the rocket attacks. The group is mired in a struggle with Hamas and has said its recent attacks are in retaliation for a Hamas crackdown. Israel considers Hamas responsible for any attacks that originate from Gaza, and announced Sunday that its crossings into Gaza will be shut down in response to the latest incident. (ap)

Baumstein’s rowboat, the “Icha,” short for an Okinawan phrase meaning “once we meet we’re family,” is a lime-green, 23-foot (7-meter) -long vessel that weighs less than 660 pounds (300 kilograms). It has no motor or sail. When the weather allows, she plans to row 14-16 hours a day, breaking her sleep to check her location — she hopes to stay within the 100-kilometer (62-mile) -wide Kuroshio current that arcs across the Pacific, at least for the first part of the journey. Baumstein rowed competitively in high school and at the University of Wisconsin, but was sidelined by a bad car accident. After recovering, she joined three men in rowing the mid-Atlantic from the Canary Islands to Barbados in January 2012. She has kayaked from Washington state to Alaska, stand-up paddle-boarded across the Bering Strait and bicycled 1,800 miles (2,900 kilometers) from the Mexican border to Seattle. She likens the Pacific challenge to “climbing K-12 without oxygen.” But she’s determined. “I worked three years of my life for this,” she said Sunday. “It’s 6,000 miles. SENGIGI - Dozens of tourists were injured when small explosions hit a ferry crossing between the popular Indonesian islands of Bali and Lombok, officials said Saturday. The explosions were likely to have come from the fuel tank of the ferry, which was carrying 129 passengers on board, most of them tourists. The boat had completed about onethird of its journey to the resort island of Bali from Senggigi in Lombok when the explosion took place on Friday afternoon. Among those injured were passengers from Australia, France, Italy, US, UK and New Zealand. “No one has serious injuries. Most of the 25 patients suffered minor injuries from the impact,” an official at West Nusa Tenggara hospital, Oxy Cahyo Wahyuni, said. Two explosions hit the vessel 30 minutes after it set off from Senggigi with the second explosion breaking the

Dozens injured in ferry explosion Conservationists press Jakarta to follow industry lead on forests off Indonesia’s Lombok have been accused of destroying vast tranches of the forests that are home to endangered species such as Sumatran orangutans and tigers. APRIL had only last year committed to phasing out deforestation in its supply chain by 2020, following APP’s promise in 2013 to stop using any logs from Indonesia’s natural forests in its mills. But in what APRIL’s group president Praveen Singhavi called a major step in their “sustainability journey”, the company ceased forest clearing in May and promised no new developments on Indonesian forest or peat land. Conservation groups, which stood side by side with APRIL executives in Jakarta as they made the announcement this week, said they would be keeping a close eye on the company’s operations to ensure their promises were kept. “I think that’s where the challenge is,” WWF’s Aditya Bayunanda told AFP on Friday.

“I wouldn’t say I am completely pessimistic, because I think APRIL has taken some serious steps that were not done before.” But far from going it alone, APRIL and APP are part of a growing trend of companies distancing themselves from deforestation. Wilmar International, the world’s largest palm oil company, announced in December it would adopt a “zero deforestation” policy, with rival Golden Agri Resources following a few months later. JAKARTA - Four-times Indonesian champions Persipura Jayapura, one of the country’s most famed clubs, has disbanded with owners blaming the government for the FIFA ban that has halted the sport in one of Asia’s biggest markets. “It is with great sadness that we dissolve the team,” Persipura chairman Tommy Mano was quoted as saying by local media. “The government must be held responsible.” World governing body FIFA banned Indonesia last month for government interference after the ministry demanded the local football association (PSSI) ban two clubs over questionable ownership. The PSSI cancelled the Indonesian Super League season last month after the ministry banned the football body, who retained the backing of the clubs. The PSSI’s attempts to start a

different competition were blocked by the government, who threatened teams with sanctions if they signed up. “It was the government that froze the PSSI, and it’s not us making trouble now,” Mano said. “The minister should know better than to threaten us with sanctions. If anything, we’ve respected the government this whole time.” Persipura won both of their league matches before the campaign was halted.
