Vladimir Putin was sworn in as Russia’s president for a fourth term on Monday, extending his almost two-decade rule by another six years at a time of high tension with his Western rivals. The 65-year-old, in power since 1999, is on course to become the longest-serving Russian leader since Joseph Stalin after his victory in March’s elections.

JODHPUR - Indian movie star Salman Khan managed to avoid the spotlight when he returned to court on Monday over his five-year jail sentence for killing endangered wildlife. Khan, one of the world’s highestpaid actors, was convicted last month of shooting dead two rare antelopes known as black bucks on a 1998 hunting trip. He spent two days behind bars before being granted bail. The Bollywood icon was ordered to appear in court on Monday and an early-morning hearing was held in Jodhpur, in the western state of Rajasthan. Khan arrived in a white SUV and slipped into court around 8:00 am (0230 GMT) surrounded by minders, catching Indian media and his army of fans off guard. Court sessions generally start much later in India. The judge, Chandra Kumar Songara, quickly adjourned proceedings

after Khan’s defence team requested more time to prepare their appeal. Khan, who is not allowed to leave the country without permission but has been filming a new movie in India, returned directly to Jodhpur airport after the hearing. “We will begin arguments on the appeal against the five-year sentence from July 17,” said defence counsel Mahesh Bora. Prosecutors said they would oppose the appeal bid and were ready to present their case. Four other actors were acquitted in last month’s verdict and Khan has repeatedly denied killing the creatures -- accusing Rajasthan’s forest department of trying to frame him. His lawyers claim the black

bucks died of natural causes such as overeating, insisting there was no evidence they were shot. Throughout the multiple cases, eyewitnesses have stated they saw Khan firing a gun. The 52-year-old enjoys a cult-like status in star-obsessed India and is one of Bollywood’s biggest draws, despite a host of controversies. Khan was in a vehicle in Mumbai in 2002 when it mounted the curb and killed a homeless man sleeping on the pavement. He was found guilty of culpable homicide and sentenced to five years in prison, but the verdict was overturned by a higher court in 2015. His acquittal is being challenged in the Supreme Court. Environment Agency invites people to deal with garbage issues

GIANYAR —The Gianyar Environment Agency (DLH) appears to be unsatisfied with the public response to the garbage clogging up the river in Blahbatuh village, so a Sunday (May 6), Head of thDLH Gianyar, I Wayan Jukus Pawitra led the agency in trying to bring awareness ot the public through a community river clean-up event. DLH Gianyar deployed dozens of sanitation task force agents and provided two garbage trucks and two Viar three wheeled garbage transport vehicles. Pawitra, said the clean-up wa organised for the environemnt but also as part of community work month as a way to promote community spirit which seesm to be fading. “We will continue to invite the community to take part in clean-ups in different locations”, he said. DLH Gianyar coordinated with a number of village headmen to increase awareness

about maintaining a clean environment by amongst other things – not littering. “Wherever we notice an area that is not being well maintained we will contact the village chief and ask him to organize a community clean-up”, added Pawitra. This official from Kesian hamlet, explained that Gianyar’s district government has issued Local Regulation No.11/2013 on household waste management and household garbage. The regulation declares that it is prohibited to dispose of garbage – including refuse from ritual activities, haphazardly and that garbage can only be disposed of in designated areas. Violation of the regulation will result in prison sentences of up to 6 months or maximum fines of IDR 50 million “The community clean-up events will also serve to disseminate information to the public about Local Regulation No.11/2013”, he

explained. Headman of Blahbatuh, I Gusti Ngurah Kapidada, said that they have also frequently given out information about environmental sanitation as well as waste management in the area of Blahbatuh village. “In the future, we also plan to build a waste bank that will be able to accommodate nonorganic rubbish,” he said. These waste banks will not only reduce the amount of garbage going to landfill but will also become a source of income for the local community. “We regularly provide information and imposable sanctions are not restricted to administrative actions”, he said. It should be noted that on May 3rd the Environment Office of Gianyar cleaned some garbage out of the river in Laud hamlet, Balahbatuh village after the river overflowed into the yard of the Balthbatuh public health enter. Bali to strengthen cooperation in tourism, health sectors with darwin

DENPASAR - Consul of Indonesia in Darwin, Australia, Dicky D. Soerjanatamihardja expressed keenness to strengthen cooperation in the tourism and health sectors with the Bali provincial government. “We will initiate to strengthen cooperation in the tourism sector, as Bali is a favorite tourist destination among foreign visitors, especially Australians,” he noted during a meeting with Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika in Denpasar on Friday. He remarked that Bali and the Northern Territory in Australia, especially Darwin, had already established cooperation in various fields, but the spirit of residing Indonesians to strengthen cooperation has never faded. According to Soerjanatamihardja, the community of Indonesians, especially from Bali, who reside in the Northern Territory, is active in introducing

the Indonesian culture to local people in Australia. “Indonesian communities living there are active in encouraging investors from Darwin to invest in Bali. Although several private investments have entered Bali, but they still encourage them,” he pointed out. Some stalls built on road, Kidul Market getting chaotic

BANGLI —Kidul Market of Bangli is getting more chaotic. It follows the establishment of a number of stalls annexing some parts of the roads on the southern side of the market area. The existence of the stall causes the usual path through which the vehicle becomes more crowded. As seen on Sunday (May 6), a number of new stalls looked to have been just established in the south of the market. According to information, the stalls with zinc roof and takes a part of the road body are established by merchants previously sold on upper floor of the market. The stalls were established few weeks ago. Previously, the location where the stalls established was used as parking lot by the management for market visitors. Hamlet chief of Pule, Made Sukadana, judged the regulation of Kidul Market has never been clear. Expansion of the merchants to the road is admitted to adequately disrupt the traffic of residents living around the market. Not only that,

in the south of the market, he admitted the condition is chaotic. Regarding this matter, Sukadana claimed to have often conveyed to the Bangli Industry and Trade Agency. Unfortunately, there is no a clear action so far. “Hopefully, the market can be properly arranged and well managed. If possible, the management should be handled by local government-owned enterprise (Perusda). If the construction is completed in Loka Crana, we hope later on the merchants expanding to the road can be cracked down on,” he hoped. Head of the Bangli Industry and Trade Agency, Nengah Sudibya, when asked for his confirmation said the stall building is

According to the merchants occupying the stalls are victims of the fire accident. They used to sell at the Loka Crana terminal. “It is temporary. PARIS - With a science paper published after his death, Stephen Hawking has revived debate on a deeply divisive question for cosmologists: Is our Universe just one of many in an infinite, ever-expanding “multiverse”? According to one school of thought, the cosmos started expanding exponentially after the Big Bang. In most parts, this expansion or “inflation” continues eternally, except for a few pockets where it stops.

These pockets are where universes like ours are formed -- multitudes of them that are often likened to “bubbles” in an ever-expanding ocean dubbed the multiverse. Many scientists don’t like the idea, including Hawking, who said in an interview last year: “I have

never been a fan of the multiverse.” If we do live in an ever-inflating multiverse, it would mean the laws of physics and chemistry can differ from one universe to another, a concept that scientists struggle to accept. In his last contribution to cos-

mology, Hawking -- with co-author Thomas Hertog from the KU Leuven university in Belgium -- does not dismiss the multiverse concept, but proposes dramatically scaling it down. “We are not down to a single, unique universe,” the University of Cambridge quoted Hawking as saying of the paper submitted before his death on March 14 and published this week in the Journal

of High Energy Physics. However, “our findings imply a significant reduction of the multiverse, to a much smaller range of possible universes.” The new hypothesis relies on a branch of theoretical physics known as string theory, and concludes that the cosmos is “clearly finite”, Hertog told AFP, though still composed of numerous universes. SEAWEED farming at Semaya hamlet, Suana, Nusa Penida subdistrict, Klungkung, that had ‘died’ began to revive. Since a few months ago, local farmers have returned to cultivate. However, the number remains a little. When visiting this village offering a beautiful panorama, our eyes do not only see tourists enjoying marine tourism nor limestone-filled hills with grasses starting to dry out due to dry season. At some points, some residents were also busy lifting seaweeds. Some others brought it to the mainland and did not care about the heat of the sun whereas it was around 08:30 Local Time. The seaweed is green and has many branches. It was tied with a rope along about ten meters. They were not directly harvested but returned to be sowed with smaller size. This activity is pursued by some farmers such as Ni Nengah Sukarti. This aged woman was wearing long sleeves with bamboo conical hat. While sitting under a semi-permanent hut, she was willing to tell some stories. Seaweed farming having become a favorite among the local communities had been zero. People did not deliberately abandon, but it happened due to bad weather. Quality of the harvest is not maximal as many perished. However, since three months ago, the weather was getting finer so the condition was not wasted. Immediately, it was taken advantage for cultivation. “Due to supportive weather, we try again,” she said. However, she said the volume of harvest is not as much as it used to be, they are just a few plots. It happened not due to worries about harvest failure, but also due to limitations of seed availability. “In the past, many farmers cultivated seaweeds, but now they have decreased. It is just to increase the yield in the garden,” she said. Furthermore, he said that farmers have already harvested. The quality is quite good. Similarly, the selling price is in the range of IDR 8,000 per kilogram of dried seaweeds. “The price is quite good and wanted by collectors,” she added. Headman of Suana, I Putu Rai Sudarta, said the seeds cultivated by farmers are still the remaining seeds of the previous seaweeds. Of course, in terms of quality it is less good. “Now, farmers are still constrained by seeds,” he said. Tourism sector at this village is growing. Seaweed farming is considered to be a part to sweeten. To avoid from ‘sluggishness’ as ever before, it is required a touch of creative economy. “Seaweed can be processed into other products whose selling price is more promising, such as toffee which is very good if applied,” he concluded. In addition to Suana, seaweed has also been cultivated at Ped, Batununggul and Lembongan village. Within the past year it has run out. It did not only happen due to weather factor, but also tourism. MANGUPURA — Though once undergoing a decline, tourist visit to Tanjung Benoa has gradually recovered. DENPASAR - Inflation in April 2018 in Denpasar reached 0.07 percent and Singaraja underwent deflation of 0.27 percent. Consequently, when bank interest rates are high, employers will wait and see in terms of lending distribution. Then, the production growth of business sector turns sluggish. With high interest rates, the absorption of labor is a little or zero. This has an impact if inflation rises sharply. However, if the inflation rate is still within a reasonable rate, he considered it does not have a significant impact on the economy. District government asked central government to realize the normalization and arrangement. The regent said the environmental damage to Lake Buyan recently requires a comprehensive treatment program. This additional equipment can optimize cleanup of water hyacinth and weeds. Another program of BWS is to build a pond to hold sedimentation in case of flooding or erosion from upstream areas. After the siltation, the water will just be flowed into the lake. To realize the program, BWS estimated to need a fund worth IDR 150 billion. animals. Studies show a 26 percent decline in the koala population in New South Wales over the last 15-20 years. The state lists the species as “vulnerable”, while in other parts of the country they are effectively extinct. Under the Aus$45 million plan, thousands of hectares will be set aside to preserve the marsupial’s natural habitat. Funds will be used to tackle diseases ravaging koala populations, including chlamydia -- which causes blindness, infertility and death in the species. Cash has also been earmarked for research, roadkill hotspot upgrades and a new hospital to care for sick and injured koalas. A hotline will also be set up to report koalas in trouble. BUSINESS Nestle pays $7.15 billion to sell Starbucks products

Swiss food giant Nestle announced Monday it will pay $7.15 billion in cash for the rights to market Starbucks products around the world, outside of the company’s coffee shops. The agreement gives Nestle, which owns the Nescafe and Nespresso brands, a strong platform for continued growth in North America, the company said in a statement. Nestle is focusing on coffee as a main growth area and has already made some acquisitions in the sector. The Starbucks business covered by the deal currently generates around $2 billion sales annually and includes coffee beans and ground coffee that Nestle will be selling in supermarkets around the world. “This transaction is a significant step for our coffee business, Nestle’s largest high-growth category,” said Nestle CEO Mark Schneider in a statement. “Both companies have true passion for outstanding coffee and are proud to be recognised as global leaders for their responsible and sustainable coffee sourcing,” he said. The deal does not include any of Starbucks’ coffee shops and cafes. Around 500 Starbucks staff will join Nestle, the company said, but the operations would continue to be located in Seattle. Both companies would collaborate on “innovation and go-to-market strategies”, it said. Starbucks president and CEO Kevin Johnson hailed the deal as “historic” and said it would create a “global coffee alliance”. Nestle, which has been under intense shareholder pressure to improve its profitability, has begun to reposition itself since Schneider took over at the start of last year. The former head of German

Barong bangkal or barong bangkung is a large enough and old pig considered a mythical animal having a mystical power. Attires of

the barong are made of black and white velvet. However, in general, the attires are not pretentious like that of other types of barong. In every show, the barong bangkung is also equipped with trinkets of ate leaves and the dancers are wearing checkered trousers and rattles tied on legs, so that when moving they will generate rattling sound. Barong bangkal is carried by two dancers and the performances are held in the streets and around the village. With the presence of barong

show, villagers will feel they have been protected by deities marked by the arrival of barong bangkal or barong bangkung. The show is accompanied with batel bebarongan gamelan music consisting of drums, tawa-tawa, kelenang, kelenong, cymbals and kempur. The word ngelawang is derived from the word lawang meaning ‘door,’ a term in the Balinese language that means a gallivanting show from one house to another or from one village to another. This gallivanting show with diverse Balinese artistic traditions is performed by art troupe. Allegedly this traditional show sources from a Hindu mythology, namely Shiva Tattva. Once upon a time Lord Shiva and Goddess Uma are making love in improper place and time, so that harmony shakes. As a result, it brings in misery for mankind and other living beings. After realizing his fault, Lord Shiva sent gods to calm down the situation and reassure the whole universe. When arriving on earth, the gods created and performed a variety of art forms. WELLINGTON - A new sinkhole on a North Island farm as deep as four double-decker buses and almost the length of two football fields has grabbed the attention of New Zealand volcanologists. The chasm appeared after heavy rainfall near the town of Rotorua and left a jagged scar on the landscape, exposing rock deposits from 60,000 years ago. Experts believe rain dissolved underground limestone over thousands of years, eventually causing the ground to collapse and create the canyon. “This is pretty spectacular, it’s a lot bigger than the ones I’d normally see,” volcanologist Brad Scott said of the chasm measuring 20 metres (66 foot) deep and 200 metres (660 feet) long. Scott said the dairy farm where the fissure appeared lay on the crater of a long-dormant volcano. “What I see in the bottom of the hole is the original 60,000-year-old volcanic deposit that came out of this crater,” he told TVNZ. Farmer Colin Tremain said the sinkhole appeared overnight last week and was spotted by one of his workers during an early morning round to attend the cows. Pakistan interior minister recovering after gun attack

LAHORE - Pakistan’s interior minister was recovering in hospital Monday after being shot in a suspected assassination attempt possibly linked to blasphemy, with the attack seen as an ominous sign for security ahead of nationwide elections. Ahsan Iqbal, 59, was shot in the right arm as he prepared to leave a public meeting in his constituency in Punjab province late Sunday. Police are still investigating the attack, but local deputy commissioner Ali Anan Qamar told AFP that the shooter said he was inspired by a controversy last year in which a small amendment to the oath that election candidates must swear had to be hastily reversed after it was linked to blasphemy. The row sparked a three-week sit-in last November by a previously little-known Islamist group,

which paralysed the capital. That demonstration ended when the government capitulated to the protesters’ demands -- including the ousting of the federal law minister -- in a deal brokered by the military. At the time many Pakistanis and analysts warned that a dangerous precedent had been set in which fringe groups could bend the state to their will by citing blasphemy, a highly inflammatory charge in the conservative Muslim country. Iqbal, a champion of Pakistan’s much-persecuted religious minorities, pushed for a negotiated settlement to the controversy. He has previously condemned hate speech against groups such as the Ahmadis, an Islamic minority sect who were at the centre of the dispute.

After the shooting he was rushed first to a local hospital and then airlifted to Lahore, where video footage released by his ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz party (PML-N) showed him being lowered from a helicopter on a stretcher, his eyes open as he responded to questions. Doctors performed surgery on him until the early hours, Shafqat Waseem Chaudhry, one of the five-member medical team responsible for him, told AFP. “He is stable now. But he will remain in the (intensive care unit) for two days,” he said. The attack was swiftly condemned by the international community as Pakistanis voiced fears it represented an attempt to weaken democracy ahead of the federal elections, widely expected to be held late this summer. Indonesia’s first-quarter GDP growth slowed on the back of a contraction in exports and public spending, the government said Monday, despite efforts to rev up Southeast Asia’s biggest economy. The latest figures present another challenge to Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo who came to office in 2014 on a pledge to boost annual growth to seven percent. But Indonesia’s commodity-driven economy has been stuck in the 5.0 percent growth range despite repeated interest rate cuts by the central bank over the past couple of years. On Monday, Indonesia said its economy grew 5.06 percent in the January-March period, slightly off a 5.2 percent growth rate it saw in the previous three months, as lacklustre consumer spending also weighed on activity. “We see little prospect of a rebound,” Gareth Leather, a senior Asia economist at London-based consultancy Capital Economics said in a report after the data were published. “Although the decent prospects for the global economy should help to support export volumes, subdued prices for Indonesia’s main commodity exports (especially palm oil) mean revenues are likely to remain low by past standards.” The country is the world’s biggest producer of palm oil -- used in everything from food to cosmetics. But the commodity has been facing a backlash over the environmental impact of massive land clearing to grow the crop. Despite the lack of pick-up in growth, Indonesia last month won a credit rating upgrade from Moody’s which pointed to efforts at keeping budget deficits and inflation under control. Widodo has launched an ambitious bid to upgrade Indonesia’s creaking infrastructure and boost tax revenue, but the sprawling nation still struggles with endemic corruption, poverty and lacklustre education standards. “Further ahead, growth will depend on the government’s progress in addressing Indonesia’s long-standing structural issues,” Leather said.(afp)

BOGOR - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) along with Prime Minister (PM) Li Keqiang planted a sapling of camphor, or “Dryobalanops lanceolata,” in the backyard of the Bogor Presidential Palace. The Indonesian head of state and head of the government of China planted a camphor sapling on Monday as a sign of growing friendship between the two countries. After a state welcome ceremony, Jokowi and Li then headed to the backyard of the Bogor Presidential Palace through the verandah of the palace. They then walked to the park in the palace and planted a camphor sapling. The leaders then watered the sapling with a green bucket. After planting the sapling with a few ground hoes and watering it using a water scoop, Jokowi invited Li to wash his hands. However, as the bucket was half-filled with water, PM Li invited President Jokowi to pour it

on the plant. PM Li held up the green bucket, assisted by President Jokowi, and then poured the water together while laughing. After watering the sapling, they shook hands and smiled for the media. Furthermore, President Jokowi and PM Li held a bilateral meeting with the delegation and representatives of the Indonesian government in a room. According to the Center of Plant Conservation Bogor Botanical Garden data, camphor is a type of plant belonging to the Dipterocarpaceae family.

The wood, having a strong class II-(I) and durable class III, can be utilized to make boats and roof construction poles of houses. Camphor wood also has other economic value, as the camphor and its sap can be used for medical and cosmetic purposes. This rare plant is usually found on the Sumatra and Borneo islands. The planting of the sapling symbolizes the hope of both governments to make their relationship stronger and more mutually beneficial in various sectors of cooperation.(ant)

ISTANBUL - Taro Daniel claimed “surprise” at securing his first career ATP title with a 7-6 (7/4), 6-4 defeat of Tunisia’s Malek Jaziri in Istanbul on Sunday. The 25-year-old Daniel hit the tennis headlines when toppling 12-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic at Indian Wells in March. The thrill of taking that heavyweight scalp - his first win over a top 20 player in the ATP rankings - soon dissipated as he lost four of his next five matches. But the world number 114 regained his form in Turkey this week, advancing for the first time to the semifinals and maintaining his composure to take the title. “I was feeling pretty nervous before the match,” Daniel, who was born in New York and trained in Spain said. “I was nervous, but I told myself, ‘I’m sure he’s more nervous than me.’ So that helped. When I started not badly... I started to calm down a bit more.” “I’m obviously pretty surprised that I suddenly won an ATP (title). Kevin Durant scored 38 points to power the reigning NBA champion Warriors over the New Orleans Pelicans 118-92 and Chris Paul finished with 27 points and 12 rebounds as the Rockets defeated the Utah Jazz 100-87. Ronaldo was forced off at half-time after appearing to hurt his ankle and Real will be hoping their star striker can now recover in time for the Champions League final against Liverpool on May 26. “It’s a small thing,” Real coach Zinedine Zidane said afterwards. “He is a bit worried, right now the ankle is a bit swollen, but he said it is not so bad.” Gerard Pique’s challenge had come as Ronaldo cancelled out Luis Suarez’s opener before Sergi Roberto was sent off on the stroke of half-time for an altercation with Real defender Marcelo. Barca, however, took the lead in the second half as Messi scored a brilliant individual goal only for Gareth Bale, who could earlier have been sent off, to have the last word in a thrilling Clasico, his emphatic strike earning Real a deserved draw. After initially taking treatment, Ronaldo played on for 31 minutes

here before Zidane decided to substitute him at half-time, which may at least offer Real encouragement. “It’s just the movement, tomorrow we’ll see,” Zidane told Movistar. “The Champions League final? Florentin Pogba, the older brother of Manchester United star Paul, was attacked by angry Genclerbirligi team-mates after abruptly walking off the pitch on Sunday and leaving his side a man down, Turkish media reported. Pogba was confronted in the changing room by several team-mates after the 1-0 league defeat at home to Antalyaspor, according to the Dogan news agency and Fanatik sports daily. Security officers and club officials reportedly had to intervene to usher Pogba to safety. The defender removed his shirt and stormed off the pitch in the 88th minute with his team down a goal after an argument with a team-mate. Genclerbirligi had already made their three substitutions, forcing the home side to finish the match with just 10 men. The loss means Genclerbirligi are almost certain to be relegated from the Turkish top flight with five points between them and safety and just two matches of the season remaining.
