LOS ANGELES - Hinting at a possible pregnancy, Janet Jackson announced on Wednesday that she was halting her “Unbreakable” world tour because of a “sudden change” in her plans for a family. “We’re in the second leg of the tour, and there actually has been a sudden change,” Jackson, 49, said in a video selfie posted on her Twitter account. “My husband and I are planning our family, so I’m going to have to delay the tour. Please if you could try and understand that it’s important that I do this now. I have to rest up, doctor’s orders,” Jackson said. Jackson, who has no children,
did not clarify whether she was pregnant, hoped to become pregnant, or was planning to adopt. Her representatives did not respond to requests for comment. Wednesday’s cryptic announcement followed a delay in December in Jackson’s “Unbreakable” world tour when she announced she had to undergo unspecified surgery. A month later, she denied rumors that she had cancer. Jackson, the fiercely private
youngest child of the famed Jackson singing family, married her third husband, Qatari businessman Wissam al Mana, in 2012. The tour, Jackson’s first in four years, was launched in August 2015. The second leg was due to begin in Las Vegas in May and play multiple dates in the United States and Canada through August. Jackson, who looked happy and wore a white collared shirt in the video, said she has not forgotten her fans and will continue the “Unbreakable” tour as soon as she can. LONDON - With leading ladies Charlize Theron, Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain, female characters dominate fantasy film “The Huntsman: Winter’s War”, unleashing dark forces, freezing enemies and fighting evil. The movie is a prequel to the 2012 “Snow White and the Huntsman”, which was inspired by the Brothers Grimm fairytale, and sees Oscar winner Theron and “Thor” actor Chris Hemsworth reprise their roles as evil Queen Ravenna and The Huntsman. The story follows Ravenna and her sister Freya (Blunt) as they seek kingdom domination with The Huntsman and his bow and arrow wielding love interest Sara (Chastain) battling to defeat them in their quest. “With this specific genre, it’s usually that the girl is tied to a tree and the guy has to save her and there’s a lot of damsels in distress,” Blunt told Reuters. “I think this fairytale just adopts a different dynamic between men and women ... I remember it really struck me when I read the script that they were so layered and nuanced and different from each other as well.” While Ravenna will stop at nothing to remain the fairest in the land, Freya turns into an icy-hearted villainess after losing her child. The story looks at the origins of The Huntsman from the 2012 movie, which starred Kristen Stewart as Snow White. “It was great because there’s such an expansive world and fantasy there to visit,” Hemsworth said. “The Huntsman: Winter’s War”, already out in Britain and Ireland, continues its cinema roll out worldwide from Thursday. DENPASAR - In turns out that Bali has become the target of a syndicat of international bank hackers. Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Depasar Police, Commander Reinhard Habonaran Nainggolan, explained that a group of European police have ranked Bali no3 and Indonesia no7 in terms of bank customer data theft. Bali is apparently not only vulnerable to narcotics but also to bank hackers. “One of the syndicates operating in Bali is from Bularia, and a Criminial Investigation Team from the Indonesian Police Headquarters tracked some members of the syndicate and finally arrested them in Serbia. They were operating in Bali” said Reinhard, on Wednesday (Arp 4). UEFA Offices Raided Over Panama Papers Scandal
GENEVA - Swiss police have raided UEFA’s offices after its former secretary general and now FIFA president Gianni Infantino became embroiled in the Panama Papers scandal. Documents leaked from Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca reportedly show he signed a contract on behalf of UEFA to sell TV rights for the Champions League and other club competitions. Mr Infantino, in his former role as UEFA director of legal services, co-signed the contract in 2006 with two businessmen who have since been caught up in football’s corruption case, according to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) analysing the 11
million leaked files. Both UEFA and the 46-year-old Swiss-Italian deny any wrongdoing. UEFA said in a statement: “UEFA can confirm that today we received a visit from the office of the Swiss Federal Police acting under a warrant and requesting sight of the contracts between UEFA and Cross Trading/Teleamazonas. “Naturally, UEFA is providing the Federal Police with all relevant documents in our possession and will co-operate fully.” Mr Infan-
tino’s alleged deal was with Hugo Jinkis and his son Mariano Jinkis, who have since been accused of bribery as part of the US investigation into corruption at FIFA. Both are currently under house arrest in Argentina. Their Argentinian company Cross Trading was registered in the South Pacific tax haven of Niue, and bought the TV rights for $111,000 (£78,780), according to ICIJ. The rights were immediately sold to Ecuadorian broadcaster Teleamazonas for $311,170 (£220,800). UEFA had initially denied doing business with any of the 14 individuals indicted by the FBI,
but now admits its response was incomplete. After a review of thousands of commercial contracts, it accepts the deal was done as part of an “open tender” - a process conducted by Team Marketing on behalf of UEFA - and the rights were sold to the highest bidder. Mr Infantino said in a statement: “If my determination to restore football’s reputation was already very strong, it is now even stronger. I welcome any investigation conducted into this matter. “For the sake of transparency and clarity, it is essential that all elements of this dossier are disclosed,

They also use USB terminals to collect data about bank customers. Reinhard explained that routers can access online ATMs. The data that they receive is divided into two groups: international bank customers and local bank customers. This syndicate targets international bank customer. “Hopefully we can bust this syndicate. We believe there are still members operating in Bali. So far the suspect has remained uncooperative”, he said.. As previously reported, a suspected member of an ATM hacking syndicate from Bulgaria, 39 year old Yanko Ivanov was arrested while committing his crimes at the BNI ATM in Nusa Dua last Sunday (Apr 3). Yanko Tersangka was caught putting up a data-collecting device in this ATM. Police suspect that the suspect -who is officially a construction worker, is not working alone. It would appear that the suspect that is now being held in custody

Hundreds of party cadres at the branch and sub-branch level of the PDI-P Jembrana were seen gathering around and fogging at people’s settlement, Tuesday morning (Apr. 5). Other than fogging, a number of party members also distributed abate powder to kill mosquito larvae. Residents were encouraged to regularly do mosquito nest eradication. “We do this effort spontaneously and there is no connection whatsoever. We are touched personally and organizationally to help fight against the dengue,” said the Chairman of the PDI-P Jembrana, I Made Kembang Hartawan. Kembang participating directly in the fogging realized that it does not resolve the problem. However, an important thing is to grow collective awareness, at least it can lessen dengue through clean and healthy lifestyle. This effort will be continuously carried out at a number of villages in the Negara town known to have rampant dengue cases. Based on the data of the Jembrana Health Agency, a total of 215 residents have been recorded to be affected by dengue since last January. The cases are scattered across the subdistricts in Jembrana. Prior to the actions of fighting against dengue, a number of agencies such as the Indonesia Military (TNI), health centers and local community in Jembrana already did environmental cleanup and eradication against the mosquito nests. The three healthy, newborn wild babies being lovingly cared for by the team of professional animal keepers at the Park are a white African rhinoceros, a giraffe and a hippopotamus. Singo, the baby giraffe, is the offspring of Sophie (7 years) and Matadi (6 years) who roam the wide spaces of the African Section of the Park’s Safari Journey. Pembe, the rare white rhino is the baby daughter of Hima (24 years) and Nelson (21) – more popularly known to animal keepers and visitors as Mr. and Mrs. Nelson, and was born on November 4, 2015. Rounding out the trio of newborn animals is Maji, the male hippopotamus born to proud hippo mom Dita, on March 24, 2016. All three babies were the re-
sult of a natural birthing process without any human intervention, with a team of expert veterinarians monitoring the entire process on close-circuit TV and ready to intervene if required. Dr. Nimal Fernando, Manager Life and Science, at the Bali Safari and Marine Park explained the kind of difficulties encountered by his team in trying to propagate captive rare animal species: “Frankly, it’s not easy to get two African rhinos to mate. ‘Pembe’ is the first baby rhino born at the Park since ‘Hima’s’ arrival in Bali six years ago. For mating to occur, the male rhino must physically conquer his partner, a ritual that proved difficult for ‘Nelson’ who is several years younger than his mate. To consummate the relationship between the two rhinos and cause ‘Hima’ to become pregnant the Bali Safari Team undertook a number of supporting strategies, including providing special nutritional enrichment to improve
the fecundity of ‘Hima’ and ‘Nelson’.” African white rhinos represent an endangered species, with the Bali Safari and Marine Park the only home to this rare animal on the entire Island. And, because such births are rare, news of the Park’s successful breeding of a baby rhino was welcomed as exciting news in conservation circles worldwide. The birth of baby animals of every variety represents joyful news at the Park, with both the animal parents and the Park’s human family eager to introduce the “new kids on the Park” to a wider world. California bill to fight fashion models’ eating disorders advances
SACRAMENTO - A California bill aimed at reducing eating disorders among models cleared its first legislative hurdle on Wednesday, following efforts in several countries to fight extreme thinness in an industry that pressures models to lose weight. The measure would require the state to develop health standards for models and regard them as employees of the brands they represent. “The goal of the bill is not only to protect the health of the workers themselves, but also to help young people who emulate models,” said the bill’s author, state Assemblyman Marc Levine, a Democrat who represents the Marin County suburbs of San Francisco. Last year, France banned excessive thinness in models, partly in response to the death in 2010 of Isabelle Caro, a 28-year-old former French fashion model.
She died from anorexia after posing for a photographic campaign to raise awareness about the illness. Israel enacted a similar measure in 2013, while Italy and Spain rely on voluntary codes of conduct to protect models. The California bill passed the Assembly Labor and Employment Committee on Wednesday. It must be approved by additional committees and the full legislature before it can go to Democratic Governor Jerry Brown, who has not said if he would sign it. At Wednesday’s committee hearing activist Sara Ziff, a for-
mer fashion model, wept as she recounted abuses she endured as a teenage model, including pressure to strip for photographers. “I felt like I was being treated more like an escort than a model,” said Ziff, 32, who founded the group Model Alliance. By requiring that models be considered employees, she said, the state would protect them from sexual abuse and exploitation, and the risks of developing an eating disorder. The Association of Talent Agents has called the bill unworkable. A licensing requirement for modeling agencies is redundant because California talent agencies are already licensed, association President Karen Stuart said. “This does nothing to reduce the problems that you heard about today,” Stuart said. Of course the presence of the buildings in the coastal borderline does not have permission. When visiting Nusa Penida, the Regent of Klungkung, I Nyoman Suwirta, asserted the buildings on the shoreside do not have permission. In accordance with the rules of coastal borderline, there should be no buildings within 100 meters from the shoreline. Other than violating the rules, the buildings in front of the beach denoting public area even becomes private area. Regent Suwirta revealed that the
government does not prohibit investors to participate in the tourism development in Nusa Penida. Moreover, not a few local entrepreneurs from Nusa Penida also participate in building tourist accommodations on the island. However, he requested the construction may not sacrifice public area. “Do not let them all build on the shoreside so that the beach access is hindered and the people of Nusa
Penida are difficult when going to the beach,” he explained amid the visit to Nusa Penida, Wednesday (Apr. 6). According to this official from Nusa Ceningan, aside from the wealth of the waters region, Nusa Penida is also enthused due to the beauty of its beaches. If every beach is built with accommodation, it will narrow down the coastal area. On the other hand, Nusa Penida also experiences abrasion due to tidal water. “This beach becomes a tourist attraction. Do not let the beaches be controlled by investors so that the public will become a spectator,” he added. To that end, his government also has a solution to make a rule on the
buildings allowed near shoreside. In addition, the government of Klungkung has also pleaded that the specified coastal borderline of100 meters from the beach can be reduced to 25 meters. “With proper regulation, the building on Nusa Penida Beach can be arranged properly to support tourism and not to sacrifice local communities,” he said. TABANAN - The significant decrease in the price of premium and ‘solar’ fuel as dictated by the central government, should affect the price of public transport tariffs. The Ministry of Transportation has also issued edict No15 , year 2016 on the adjustment of tariffs for public transportation of 3.5 percent. However this edict has not been applied in all regions. In Tabanan for example, tariffs for public transport in urban areas (Angkot) and in villages (Angdes) are still charging the same IDR 5,000 per ride as before the edict was issued. When contacted on Wednesday, Head of Tabanan’ Bureau of Tranpsortation and Com munications, (Dishub), I Made Agus Harta Wiguna responded by saying that they only receive the Ministerial edict last Tuesday (Apr.4). Wiguna added that they will be coordinating with the Regency of Tabanan’s Transport Association (Organda) as soon
as possible regarding the tariff adjustment. He added however, that according to the regulation that demands a 3.5 percent decrease in the cost of transport, Angkot and Angdes tariffs would only go down by IDR 150 per ride. This amount is very small he said and hard to be applied, he said.. Possible alternatives still need to be discussed regarding the adjustment of public transport tariffs. ”We will discuss the matter with the transport association and bus drivers as soon as possible” said Wiguna. AMLAPURA - The joint team of police and Fish Quarantine officers from Padangbai harbor recently discovered that ocean biota were being smuggled through Padangbai Harbor, Karangasem. After having stopped lobster smugglers last week, the team went on to stop a coral smuggling operation on Wednesday afternoon (Apr. 4 ). They managed to stop 1.750 pieces of coral stored in styrofoam boxes, from leaving the harbor. Head of the Fish Quarantine Office for Padangbai Harbor, Suroso said his officers were suspicious of the Titian bus that had arrived from Lombok’s Lembar Harbor with license plate number EA 7777 BG, as it was carrying dozens of styrophoam boxes in its baggage compartment. Before the bus could leave the harbor, the Padangabai Marine Police and the Fish Quaratine officers intercepted the bus and performed a search in which they found pieces of coral reef wrapped in plastic bags. “The coral was headed for Banyuwangi but because coral is contraband, we stopped them from going any further” said Suroso. The 1.750 pieces of coral found in the strofoam boxes have an estimated market value of Rp 43.750.000. According to Suroso this type of coral is from Perairan Sumawa, West Nusa Tenggara(NTB). The joint team immediately questioned the driver of the bus who finally told the officers that from Padangbai he was planning to drive to Ubung Terminal where he was to leave 6 boxes of the coral and then continue on to Gilimanuk Hrabor where 15 boxes would be left while the rest were destined for Ketapang Harbor, Banyuwangi. Suroso explained that the confiscation of the evidence was conducted according to Law No.5 , year 1990 on Biological and Ecosystem Natural Resource Conservation. This smuggling of coral also violates Law No.16, year 1992 on the Qaurantine of Flora and Fauna. The confiscated evidence will be handed over to the Class I Fish Quarantine, Quality Control and Fisheries Safety Bureau, for further processing. Last week (Sun Apr.3), the joint team also managed to intercept the smuggling of lobster through Padangbai Harbor. They suspected a certain vehicle arriving from Lembar Harbor, Lombok and after searching said vehicle they found a large box containing 1.086 lobsters wrapped in 12 plastic bags with an estimated market value of IDR 27.150.000. The officers were forced to take action as the vehicle arrived in Padangbai, because the driver was in violation of Article 3 of the Ministry of Fisheries Regulation No. 1 year 2015 on the Capturing of Lobster, Crab and Small. Crab. This rule made by Minister Susi Pudjiastuti, in article 3, stipulates that the catching of lobster (Panulirus spp), crab (Scylla spp) and small crab (Portunus pelagicus spp) must be done according to their size: lobster must be more that 8cm , crab must be more than 5cm and small crab must be over 10cm. The regulation also stipulated the method for measuring these sea creatures and any creature smaller than that described in the regulation have the right to be protected. (kmb31)

Moreover, when the rice is nurtured with organic fertilizer, this variety is healthier to be consumed. Rice of this variety has a higher economic value, reaching IDR 20,000 in the market. Subak Belong at Tarukan village, Tampaksiring, for instance, has successfully harvested this Bali rice variety for the second time with abundant yields within 135 days. Harvesting process of the Bali rice variety on an area of 0.54 hectare at Subak Belong could produce 5.28 tons of rice. The result was certainly more than the first harvest with the yields of 3.85 tons on an area of 0.27 hectare. “After the success of the first harvest, the other farmers also started planting the Bali rice variety because of the quality and result are far more abundant than the usual rice varieties,” said chief of Subak Belong, I Wayan Budiana, amid the harvest of Bali rice variety at local subak (Balinese irrigation cooperative) together with dozens of farmers and the ranks of the 1616/Gianyar Military District, Wednesday (Apr. 6). He explained that during the process of planting seedlings of the Bali rice variety obtained from the Tarukan Ashram, he applied the jajar legowo system pursuant to direction of the Gianyar Agriculture Agency and the 1616/Gianyar District
Military Command. “Before planting rice, we made appropriate distance pursuant to jajar legowo-21 system. This system makes maximum light absorption, so that the rice can grow well. In addition, this Bali rice variety does not require a lot of water,” he said accompanied by the Gianyar Military District chief of staff, Wayan Suwitantra. Furthermore, on the pilot project land located 10 km from Tampaksiring Presidential Palace, the farmers only use organic fertilizers. Besides, for pest management they use vegetal pesticide made from organic ingredients. “Organic fertilizer is used only once. If more than once, the rice plants can be obese and this will provoke leafhoppers, grasshoppers and other insects,” he said. Chief of the subak admitted that maintaining the quality of Bali rice, by reducing the use of fertilizers and chemicals, is required extra supervision and foresight
of farmers for four months and 15 days. “When seeing any white spot in the rice plant, it should be immediately cleaned. Otherwise it will become a source of leafhoppers. In short, it is required a foresight and perseverance of farmer until the harvest yield is abundant as it is today,” he said. In the meantime, the Unit Head of Tampaksiring Agricultural Integrated Services, I Ketut Warta, revealed the price of Bali rice variety reaches IDR 20,000 per kg, much more expensive than hybrid rice at IDR 11,000 per kg. Unfortunately, farmers are currently experiencing difficulties to market the Bali rice. “Rice of this local variety has very good quality and the price surely soars to more than IDR 20,000. If sold to hotel, the price can even penetrate IDR 30,000,” he said. The Head of the Gianyar Agriculture Agency, Made Raka, expressed his support for the preservation of Bali rice variety. Moreover, this variety has clearly better quality than other rice as well as has a high economic value. “Currently, the rice variety is cultivated at Subak Pulagan and Subak Belong. Security forces have arrested thousands of Islamists and killed hundreds as they crushed protests. In the past year, the campaign has also increasingly targeted secular activists who criticize the former general’s rule. Authorities have argued that they are acting to bring stability after five years of turmoil following the 2011 pro-democracy uprising that toppled longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak. Many of the top activists involved in the 2011 uprising are now in prison, most under a draconian law passed in 2013 effectively banning all street protests. In response to international criticism of the foreign funding investigation, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said there are tens of thousands of NGOs operating in Egypt, and the government is committed to enabling their work. But he said the activities of civil society groups

Egypt denied its security services were behind the killing. Last month, the Interior Ministry said it had killed members of a gang suspected of being responsible for Regeni’s death. WASHINGTON — Federal Reserve policymakers were split at their last meeting over how to respond to a slowing global economy, with two officials supporting a rate hike in March even as an opposing group felt that even raising rates in April would be too soon. At a conference in Frankfurt, Germany, Coeure stressed the central bank’s independence from government pressures and said that “this is a country where our independence should be upheld.” The ECB recently stepped up its injections of newly created money into the economy through bond purchases in an effort to raise inflation. A group of German federal and regional legislators from Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives have reportedly criticized the bank’s efforts as exceeding its powers and lowering interest returns for savers and pension programs. On Tuesday, Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaueble was quoted as saying that ECB policy was “less favorable” for Germany. The ECB must come up with one set of policies for the entire 19-country eurozone; growth is sluggish for the eurozone as a whole but Germany enjoys low unemployment of 4.3 percent and on its own would need less stimulus-oriented policies. The efforts of Pinge village into tourism village originally got full support from the regent of Tabanan. Previously, the regent said that in the future the government will focus on developing tourism village. It also has an impact on the reduction of productive land conversion. With this breakthrough, residents are expected to preserve the environment and culture of the village. “When tourist visit increases, we’re optimistic if the people’s economy will be better because the products created can be sold to visitors for souvenirs. Flocks of children do devotional work in the implementation of Ngambeng tradition. After entering people’s house, they will say greeting ‘Om Swastyastu.’ Furthermore, the host will give a variety of crops which becomes a means of ritual ingredients such as coconuts or a pack of incense. “The residents, particularly merchants, visited by these children are unable to reject because they are confident that delivering something

Xi seen as easily surviving revelations in Panama Papers
BEIJING — For graft-busting Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping, the Panama Papers revelations that show his brother-in-law and relatives of two other members of the party’s elite inner circle owned offshore companies, often referred to as tax havens, might have been highly damaging. Instead, Xi will likely emerge unscathed as a result of his personal hold on political power, controls over free speech and the media, and a sense both among the public and potential rivals that all leading families are tainted to some degree, analysts say. With the latest reports still just days old, however, lingering impacts can’t be ruled out entirely. Damage to Xi’s reputation might show up in unexpected difficulties in putting in place a new team for when he assumes a second five-year term as leader of the ruling Communist Party next year and for setting in place a succession plan for 2022. Challenges to his leadership of a bevy of offices and committees, or to his sweeping anti-corruption campaign, might also be signs of weakness. The latest report by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, known as the ICIJ, says Xi’s brother-in-law Deng Jiagui purchased one offshore company through Panama-based law firm Mossack Fonseca in 2004 and two more in 2009. All three had been dissolved or become dormant by the time Xi became party leader in 2012, the ICIJ says citing a stash of 11.5 million leaked Mossack Fonseca documents — dubbed
the Panama Papers — that discuss cases involving politicians, celebrities and business people from around the world. Analysts say the revelations shed little new light on the Xi family’s financial doings, further limiting their impact. Xi’s case is also helped by the fact that he has shown no fear in taking on high-profile targets in his anti-corruption campaign and has been seen in past as reining in his family’s illicit activities by having them sell off their interests and by telling provincial leaders personally that they did not act in his name, they say. “I would have suspected that many of those who follow elite politics already believe that Xi’s extended family is like many — if not most — elite families in that some of them have managed to cash in on China’s economic boom. I think, however, he still gets credit for cracking down on high-level corruption,” said Georgia State University political scientist Andrew Wedeman, who has extensively researched corruption in China. The investigation does however provide new information about how members of the Chinese elite use international law firms and shell companies registered overseas
in ways that could facilitate the concealment and protection of fortunes whose provenance may be unknown. The other two current Politburo Standing Committee members named in the ICIJ report are Zhang Gaoli, whose son-in-law was named as a shareholder of three companies incorporated in the British Virgin Islands, and Liu Yunshan, whose daughter-in-law was the director and shareholder of a company incorporated in the British Virgin Islands in 2009. Having such accounts is not illegal, and no specific functions, asset amounts or allegations of wrongdoing were made in any of the cases. Like Xi, none have responded directly to the reports. While the leaked documents also revealed hidden dealings by politicians in Western-style democracies, Xi is shielded from the kinds of scrutiny his Western counterparts must contend with. Along with its muzzled press, China permits its national legislature to meet in full session just once a year and then only to debate and approve proposals sent them by the government. Nor does China permit public protests of the type that confronted Iceland’s leader Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson before he stepped aside Tuesday amid outrage over revelations he had used a shell company to shelter large sums while Iceland’s economy was in crisis. Kerry breaks record for miles traveled by secretary of state
MANAMA — John Kerry is now the most traveled secretary of state in U.S. history, breaking the record as he arrived in the Middle East kingdom of Bahrain on Wednesday. The trip pushed Kerry past 1.06 million miles as America’s top diplomat, narrowly beating Condoleezza Rice by about 1,000 miles. Rice, who was secretary of state under President George W. Bush, held the previous mark with 1.059 million miles. Kerry eclipsed Hillary Clinton’s mileage tally in December. With 10 months left before a new president takes office, Kerry is showing no signs of tempering his hectic travel schedule. He flew to the Mideast on Tuesday from New York after attending an energy conference, stopping in Ireland to refuel. He plans to visit Japan later in the week. Wi t h n o i m m e d i a t e p l a n s to leave the State Department, Kerry could easily pad his new record by hundreds of thousands of miles before departing government. The former Massachusetts senator and former Democratic presidential nominee has spent
more than 2,300 hours — or 96 days — in the air since becoming secretary of state in February 2013. He has spent parts of 467 different days on his well-worn government plane. One record eludes Kerry still: Clinton’s 112 countries visited on the job. Having shuttled regularly between several favorite destinations — including Paris, London and Jerusalem — Kerry had only been to 80 countries. Bahrain makes 81. Kerry’s visit to the capital of Manama is the first by an American secretary of state since demonstrations by the kingdom’s Shiite majority in 2011. Saudi and Emirati troops helped put down the protests, though discontent continues. Human rights groups chastise Bahrain’s Sunni rulers for repression and discrimination. Kerry will raise human rights concerns when he meets top officials from Bahrain and the Persian Gulf region’s other Sunni monarchies countries Thursday. But the focus will be on battling the Islamic State and shared concerns over Iran. (ap)
“We are just waiting for a hint from the Philippine government whether (we will) be involved,” the commander noted in a statement, here, Thursday. The Indonesian government is currently coordinating and negotiating with the Philippine government over the efforts to release the hostages held since March. As there is no confirmation that Indonesia would be involved in the release efforts, Rahmayadi assumed that the Philippine government was still capable of dealing with the problem and was ready to take responsibility. The commander affirmed that
the Armys Strategic Command was ready to carry out any task for the country. A joint exercise of swift reaction strike unit involving the Indonesian Army, Navy and Air Force, was held in Tarakan on Sunday. The strike unit has the capability to secure the release of hostages in any condition, he noted. He pointed out that the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) has had a good track record in hostage-release operations. The TNI had succeeded in releasing Indonesian crew members aboard MV Sinar Kudus who were held hostage in Somali in May
2011. The military operation had been launched after the Somalian government had hinted their inability to tackle the hostage situation and had finally urged the Indonesian government to handle it through a military operation. In the meantime, President Joko Widodo stated that communication was ongoing, and he was personally monitoring the developments in the hostage case in the Philippines. “Communications are on, and I have been following the case,” he stated after inaugurating the port of Tobelo in North Halmahera in the Indonesian eastern province of North Maluku. The Abu Sayyaf group had given eight days to the Indonesian government to pay the ransom. As of now, the deadline is just a day away. (ant)
CIREBON - An international drug syndicate involving two Indonesian prisoners had smuggled some 800 kilograms (kg) of crystal methamphetamine from Malaysia into Indonesia since 2012, an official stated. “The network had smuggled methamphetamine and ecstasy from Malaysia into Indonesia from 2012 to 2016 through the MalaysiaPanjang Straits-Cirebon maritime route,” Adjunct Senior Commissioner Dony Setiawan, chairman of the Narcotics Investigation Center team of the Crime Investigation Directorate of the Indonesian Police, said here, Wednesday. The prisoners are Ricky Gunawan alias Ricky Bom-bom of the Cipinang Penitentiary in East Jakarta and Anciong alias Karun of the Tanjung Gusta Penitentiary in Medan, North Sumatra Police. Ricky Gunawan ran the operations to distribute the smuggled
drugs to clients. “He had instructed Rizki and Fajar to deliver the drugs to the clients,” Setiawan revealed. Anciong had ordered the drugs from Malaysia and at the same time had supervised the delivery of the shipment. The police have conducted serious investigations into this case since the last two months. “During the last two months, we did not immediately arrest the suspects, but we allowed the drugs to be unloaded and stored at a warehouse in Cirebon,” the police official remarked. On March 16, the police detained M. Rizki and Fajar Priyo Susilo for carrying 15 kg of meth and 20 thousand ecstasy pills from Cirebon to Jakarta. During a raid conducted at the Cirebon warehouse, the police also found 25 kg of meth and 160 thousand ecstasy pills. On March 17, the police also arrested Jusman and Khoirul for
facilitating the smuggling from Malaysia to Cirebon aboard MV Bahari I, which is owned by Jusmans older brother. In total, the police have arrested 10 suspects for their alleged involvement in the smuggling and trafficking of drugs. Other suspects included Sugianto alias Achai of West Dumai who was in charge of transporting the drugs from Malaysia to Panjang Straits; Hendri Unan and Gunawan Aminah who paid for the transportation and operational costs; and Yanto alias Abeng, also a prisoner at the Tanjung Gusta Penitentiary in Medan, who had helped Anciong to establish contact in Malaysia to order the drugs. Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan recently stated that some 70 percent of drug trafficking was managed by drug convicts from prison.(ant)
JAKARTA — Two Indonesian military skydivers have plunged to their deaths during an airshow rehearsal in the country’s capital. Indonesian air force spokesman Air Marshal Dwi Badarmanto said one of the victims fell from about
12,500 feet (3,800 meters) over a residential area close to an air force base on Thursday after his parachute failed to open. The second skydiver lost control when strong winds disrupted his descent. Badarmanto said the deaths
would be investigated. Both men were members of the air force’s elite troops. They were rehearsing jumps with hundreds of other skydivers for a celebration of the air force’s 70th anniversary on Saturday. (ap)

DALLAS - J.J. Barea added another clutch performance to the best stretch of his career Wednesday night and the Dallas Mavericks secured a crucial 88-86 win over the Houston Rockets at American Airlines Center. Dallas (40-38) has won five in a row and took a two-game lead over Southwest Division rival Houston (38-40) going into the last four games of the regular season. The Mavs and Rockets are locked in a three-team race with Utah (39-39) for the final two Western Conference playoff spots. The victory also allowed Dallas to split the four-game season series with Houston. The Rockets would have taken the series and, more importantly, a playoff tiebreaker with a win. Houston has lost six of its last nine games to fall into ninth in the West. Barea scored a game-high 27
points on 10-of-16 shooting, including 4-for-7 on 3-pointers, two days after being named Western Conference Player of the Week for the first time in his career. As big as the diminutive Barea was on the offensive end, a defensive play by Dallas’ longtime top gun helped preserve the Mavericks’ hold on the game. Dirk Nowitzki, immersed in one of the worst shooting slumps of his career, stripped James Harden driving to the basket with Dallas holding a one-point lead in the final seconds. Harden scored 26 to lead the Rockets, but shot only 8-of-22 and had six turnovers. Rockets center Dwight Howard had 14 points and 16 rebounds. Dallas has held each of its last five opponents to less than 90 points. Howard came to life in the third quarter by hitting the offensive boards and finishing strong. He gave Houston a 71-70 lead going into the fourth by tipping in an inbounds pass at the buzzer. Barea scored 17 points in the first half, as the Mavericks took a 52-44 lead into the locker room. Matthews scored nine on three 3-pointers. The Rockets were down 12 late in the second quarter before two contested jumpers by Harden pulled the visitors within eight points at the break. Harden had 10 points in the half and Michael Beasley scored nine on 4-5 shooting. The Rockets return to Houston to complete a back-to-back Thursday night against Phoenix. FIFA ethics judge Damiani resigns while under suspicion
GENEVA — Under suspicion in the fallout from the global offshore accounts investigation, Uruguayan lawyer Juan Pedro Damiani resigned as a FIFA ethics judge on Wednesday. Damiani was already under investigation by FIFA ethics prosecutors after being identified on Sunday in a vast leak of data from a Panama law firm specializing in tax avoidance schemes which can be exploited for money laundering. His exit, after helping to ban former FIFA president Sepp Blatter from soccer last December, damages the scandal-hit world soccer body’s efforts to rebuild its image and reputation under new leadership. Damiani’s formal resignation from the FIFA court was confirmed in a statement from the judging chamber without giving details. The Penarol club president’s links to disgraced former FIFA vice president Eugenio Figueredo were the center of the case against him. Damiani did not tell the FIFA ethics committee until March that he and his family’s law firm had a “business relationship” with Figueredo, a fellow Uruguayan who had been arrested in Zurich almost 10 months earlier. Figueredo was indicted by American federal prosecutors investigating corruption in world soccer and later extradited to Uruguay. He has pleaded guilty to fraud and money laundering charges and acknowledged taking bribes. On Sunday, Damiani was named in international media reports for his law firm’s links to Panama law firm Mos-
sack Fonseca. He is alleged to have helped create offshore accounts and companies for three clients who have been indicted in the sprawling FIFA bribery investigation led by federal prosecutors in Brooklyn. As well as Figueredo, marketing executives Hugo and Mariano Jinkis — a father and son from Argentina — are suspected of paying millions of dollars in bribes linked to acquiring broadcast rights for continental competitions, including the Copa America. The Jinkis connection has also drawn new FIFA President Gianni Infantino into the reports, though he is not suspected of wrongdoing. As UEFA legal director in 2006, Infantino co-signed a contract selling Champions League TV rights for Ecuador to a subsidiary of the Jinkis-owned Full Play company. On Wednesday, UEFA offices in Switzerland were raided by federal police to seize documents relating to the rights deal. Switzerland’s attorney general is leading a widening investigation of FIFA, and now UEFA, business which includes suspected undervalued sales of TV rights. Criminal proceedings against Blatter were opened last September. In 2006, Blatter helped appoint Damiani as a member of a revamped FIFA ethics committee. Damiani also followed his father into football, succeeding him as president of Uruguay’s 49-time champion Penarol. MANCHESTER — There’s growing competition for discovery of the season in the English Premier League. Leading the way are N’Golo Kante, the box-to-box French midfielder propelling Leicester to an unlikely title triumph; Dele Alli, the Tottenham playmaker plucked from England’s third tier; and Marcus Rashford, Manchester United’s 18-year-old striker who seems born for the big time. Time to add Arsenal winger Alex Iwobi to the list. Iwobi, like Rashford, is a shy yet fearless teenager who has burst onto center stage in the world’s most popular league in recent weeks. Arsenal’s all-star midfield is a tough department to break into, yet Iwobi has achieved it seemingly out of nowhere. He has started four of Arsenal’s last five matches, including a Champions League game away to the mighty Barcelona. He has scored and been named man of the match in the last two appearances, against Everton and Watford in the Premier League.
Theo Walcott is in desperate need of game time to retain his place in England’s squad for the European Championship, but is currently playing second fiddle to Iwobi on the right wing. He may have to get used to it. Iwobi, 19, is the nephew of Nigeria great Jay-Jay Okocha and has been at Arsenal since the age of 8, having grown up in London. He is a powerful, hard-working, technically gifted attacker with an eye for goal — just as Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger likes it. Iwobi, Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez as the three floating forwards behind the main striker? It’s some prospect and already proving a big hit. “He is an intelligent boy who loves football, very passionate about the game, keen to learn, very humble as well,” Wenger has said of Iwobi. “It’s surprising how quickly he’s integrated into our game.” Iwobi’s accomplished display at the Camp Nou really made people sit up and take note of a player who
didn’t start a game in the first half of the season. During the recent international break, Iwobi made his debut for Nigeria in a loss to Egypt — stamping his allegiance to the African country having played for England’s youth teams up to under-18 level. A call-up to Nigeria’s squad for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in August is in the offing — but first he might just be Arsenal’s secret weapon as the team looks to secure a 19th straight season of Champions League football. Impressive wins over Everton and Watford have consolidated third place with seven games left, and even kept Arsenal with an outside shot at the title. That, however, would require an implosion by surprise leader Leicester, which is seven clear of secondplace Tottenham and 11 ahead of Arsenal, which has a game in hand. Arsenal visits West Ham on Saturday, while Leicester travels to relegation-threatened Sunderland and Tottenham hosts Manchester United.(ap)

FIFA ethics judge Damiani resigns while under suspicion
GENEVA — Under suspicion in the fallout from the global offshore accounts investigation, Uruguayan lawyer Juan Pedro Damiani resigned as a FIFA ethics judge on Wednesday. Damiani was already under investigation by FIFA ethics prosecutors after being identified on Sunday in a vast leak of data from a Panama law firm specializing in tax avoidance schemes which can be exploited for money laundering. His exit, after helping to ban former FIFA president Sepp Blatter from soccer last December, damages the scandal-hit world soccer body’s efforts to rebuild its image and reputation under new leadership. Damiani’s formal resignation from the FIFA court was confirmed in a statement from the judging chamber without giving details. The Penarol club president’s links to disgraced former FIFA vice president Eugenio Figueredo were the center of the case against him. Damiani did not tell the FIFA ethics committee until March that he and his family’s law firm had a “business relationship” with Figueredo, a fellow Uruguayan who had been arrested in Zurich almost 10 months earlier. Figueredo was indicted by American federal prosecutors investigating corruption in world soccer and later extradited to Uruguay. He has pleaded guilty to fraud and money laundering charges and acknowledged taking bribes. On Sunday, Damiani was named in international media reports for his law firm’s links to Panama law firm Mos-
sack Fonseca. He is alleged to have helped create offshore accounts and companies for three clients who have been indicted in the sprawling FIFA bribery investigation led by federal prosecutors in Brooklyn. As well as Figueredo, marketing executives Hugo and Mariano Jinkis — a father and son from Argentina — are suspected of paying millions of dollars in bribes linked to acquiring broadcast rights for continental competitions, including the Copa America. The Jinkis connection has also drawn new FIFA President Gianni Infantino into the reports, though he is not suspected of wrongdoing. As UEFA legal director in 2006, Infantino co-signed a contract selling Champions League TV rights for Ecuador to a subsidiary of the Jinkis-owned Full Play company. On Wednesday, UEFA offices in Switzerland were raided by federal police to seize documents relating to the rights deal. Switzerland’s attorney general is leading a widening investigation of FIFA, and now UEFA, business which includes suspected undervalued sales of TV rights. Criminal proceedings against Blatter were opened last September. In 2006, Blatter helped appoint Damiani as a member of a revamped FIFA ethics committee. Damiani also followed his father into football, succeeding him as president of Uruguay’s 49-time champion Penarol. He is a powerful, hard-working, technically gifted attacker with an eye for goal — just as Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger likes it. It’s some prospect and already proving a big hit. “He is an intelligent boy who loves football, very passionate about the game, keen to learn, very humble as well,” Wenger has said of Iwobi. “It’s surprising how quickly he’s integrated into our game.” Iwobi’s accomplished display at the Camp Nou really made people sit up and take note of a player who

During the recent international break, Iwobi made his debut for Nigeria in a loss to Egypt — stamping his allegiance to the African country having played for England’s youth teams up to under-18 level. A call-up to Nigeria’s squad for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in August is in the offing — but first he might just be Arsenal’s secret weapon as the team looks to secure a 19th straight season of Champions League football. Impressive wins over Everton and Watford have consolidated third place with seven games left, and even kept Arsenal with an outside shot at the title. That, however, would require an implosion by surprise leader Leicester, which is seven clear of secondplace Tottenham and 11 ahead of Arsenal, which has a game in hand. DALLAS - J.J. Barea added another clutch performance to the best stretch of his career Wednesday night and the Dallas Mavericks secured a crucial 88-86 win over the Houston Rockets at American Airlines Center. Dallas (40-38) has won five in a row and took a two-game lead over Southwest Division rival Houston (38-40) going into the last four games of the regular season. The Mavs and Rockets are locked in a three-team race with Utah (39-39) for the final two Western Conference playoff spots. The victory also allowed Dallas to split the four-game season series with Houston. The Rockets would have taken the series and, more importantly, a playoff tiebreaker with a win. Houston has lost six of its last nine games to fall into ninth in the West. Barea scored a game-high 27
points on 10-of-16 shooting, including 4-for-7 on 3-pointers, two days after being named Western Conference Player of the Week for the first time in his career. As big as the diminutive Barea was on the offensive end, a defensive play by Dallas’ longtime top gun helped preserve the Mavericks’ hold on the game. Xi seen as easily surviving revelations in Panama Papers
BEIJING — For graft-busting Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping, the Panama Papers revelations that show his brother-in-law and relatives of two other members of the party’s elite inner circle owned offshore companies, often referred to as tax havens, might have been highly damaging. Instead, Xi will likely emerge unscathed as a result of his personal hold on political power, controls over free speech and the media, and a sense both among the public and potential rivals that all leading families are tainted to some degree, analysts say. With the latest reports still just days old, however, lingering impacts can’t be ruled out entirely. Damage to Xi’s reputation might show up in unexpected difficulties in putting in place a new team for when he assumes a second five-year term as leader of the ruling Communist Party next year and for setting in place a succession plan for 2022. Challenges to his leadership of a bevy of offices and committees, or to his sweeping anti-corruption campaign, might also be signs of weakness. The latest report by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, known as the ICIJ, says Xi’s brother-in-law Deng Jiagui purchased one offshore company through Panama-based law firm Mossack Fonseca in 2004 and two more in 2009. All three had been dissolved or become dormant by the time Xi became party leader in 2012, the ICIJ says citing a stash of 11.5 million leaked Mossack Fonseca documents — dubbed
the Panama Papers — that discuss cases involving politicians, celebrities and business people from around the world. Analysts say the revelations shed little new light on the Xi family’s financial doings, further limiting their impact. Xi’s case is also helped by the fact that he has shown no fear in taking on high-profile targets in his anti-corruption campaign and has been seen in past as reining in his family’s illicit activities by having them sell off their interests and by telling provincial leaders personally that they did not act in his name, they say. “I would have suspected that many of those who follow elite politics already believe that Xi’s extended family is like many — if not most — elite families in that some of them have managed to cash in on China’s economic boom. I think, however, he still gets credit for cracking down on high-level corruption,” said Georgia State University political scientist Andrew Wedeman, who has extensively researched corruption in China. The investigation does however provide new information about how members of the Chinese elite use international law firms and shell companies registered overseas
in ways that could facilitate the concealment and protection of fortunes whose provenance may be unknown. The other two current Politburo Standing Committee members named in the ICIJ report are Zhang Gaoli, whose son-in-law was named as a shareholder of three companies incorporated in the British Virgin Islands, and Liu Yunshan, whose daughter-in-law was the director and shareholder of a company incorporated in the British Virgin Islands in 2009. Having such accounts is not illegal, and no specific functions, asset amounts or allegations of wrongdoing were made in any of the cases. Like Xi, none have responded directly to the reports. While the leaked documents also revealed hidden dealings by politicians in Western-style democracies, Xi is shielded from the kinds of scrutiny his Western counterparts must contend with. Along with its muzzled press, China permits its national legislature to meet in full session just once a year and then only to debate and approve proposals sent them by the government. Nor does China permit public protests of the type that confronted Iceland’s leader Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson before he stepped aside Tuesday amid outrage over revelations he had used a shell company to shelter large sums while Iceland’s economy was in crisis. Kerry breaks record for miles traveled by secretary of state
MANAMA — John Kerry is now the most traveled secretary of state in U.S. history, breaking the record as he arrived in the Middle East kingdom of Bahrain on Wednesday. The trip pushed Kerry past 1.06 million miles as America’s top diplomat, narrowly beating Condoleezza Rice by about 1,000 miles. Rice, who was secretary of state under President George W. Bush, held the previous mark with 1.059 million miles. Kerry eclipsed Hillary Clinton’s mileage tally in December. With 10 months left before a new president takes office, Kerry is showing no signs of tempering his hectic travel schedule. He flew to the Mideast on Tuesday from New York after attending an energy conference, stopping in Ireland to refuel. He plans to visit Japan later in the week. Wi t h n o i m m e d i a t e p l a n s to leave the State Department, Kerry could easily pad his new record by hundreds of thousands of miles before departing government. The former Massachusetts senator and former Democratic presidential nominee has spent

One record eludes Kerry still: Clinton’s 112 countries visited on the job. Having shuttled regularly between several favorite destinations — including Paris, London and Jerusalem — Kerry had only been to 80 countries. Bahrain makes 81. Kerry’s visit to the capital of Manama is the first by an American secretary of state since demonstrations by the kingdom’s Shiite majority in 2011. Saudi and Emirati troops helped put down the protests, though discontent continues. Human rights groups chastise Bahrain’s Sunni rulers for repression and discrimination. Kerry will raise human rights concerns when he meets top officials from Bahrain and the Persian Gulf region’s other Sunni monarchies countries Thursday. As there is no confirmation that Indonesia would be involved in the release efforts, Rahmayadi assumed that the Philippine government was still capable of dealing with the problem and was ready to take responsibility. The commander affirmed that
the Armys Strategic Command was ready to carry out any task for the country. A joint exercise of swift reaction strike unit involving the Indonesian Army, Navy and Air Force, was held in Tarakan on Sunday. The strike unit has the capability to secure the release of hostages in any condition, he noted. He pointed out that the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) has had a good track record in hostage-release operations. The TNI had succeeded in releasing Indonesian crew members aboard MV Sinar Kudus who were held hostage in Somali in May
2011. The military operation had been launched after the Somalian government had hinted their inability to tackle the hostage situation and had finally urged the Indonesian government to handle it through a military operation. In the meantime, President Joko Widodo stated that communication was ongoing, and he was personally monitoring the developments in the hostage case in the Philippines. “Communications are on, and I have been following the case,” he stated after inaugurating the port of Tobelo in North Halmahera in the Indonesian eastern province of North Maluku. CIREBON - An international drug syndicate involving two Indonesian prisoners had smuggled some 800 kilograms (kg) of crystal methamphetamine from Malaysia into Indonesia since 2012, an official stated. “The network had smuggled methamphetamine and ecstasy from Malaysia into Indonesia from 2012 to 2016 through the MalaysiaPanjang Straits-Cirebon maritime route,” Adjunct Senior Commissioner Dony Setiawan, chairman of the Narcotics Investigation Center team of the Crime Investigation Directorate of the Indonesian Police, said here, Wednesday. On March 16, the police detained M. Rizki and Fajar Priyo Susilo for carrying 15 kg of meth and 20 thousand ecstasy pills from Cirebon to Jakarta. During a raid conducted at the Cirebon warehouse, the police also found 25 kg of meth and 160 thousand ecstasy pills. On March 17, the police also arrested Jusman and Khoirul for
facilitating the smuggling from Malaysia to Cirebon aboard MV Bahari I, which is owned by Jusmans older brother. In total, the police have arrested 10 suspects for their alleged involvement in the smuggling and trafficking of drugs. Other suspects included Sugianto alias Achai of West Dumai who was in charge of transporting the drugs from Malaysia to Panjang Straits; Hendri Unan and Gunawan Aminah who paid for the transportation and operational costs; and Yanto alias Abeng, also a prisoner at the Tanjung Gusta Penitentiary in Medan, who had helped Anciong to establish contact in Malaysia to order the drugs. WASHINGTON — Federal Reserve policymakers were split at their last meeting over how to respond to a slowing global economy, with two officials supporting a rate hike in March even as an opposing group felt that even raising rates in April would be too soon. Minutes of the Fed’s March 1516 meeting released Wednesday showed that several participants argued for “proceeding cautiously” with future rate hikes because of global risks such as weaker growth in China. Top ECB officials push back against stimulus critics ECB executive council member Benoit Coeure said Thursday that “we have to act” to raise annual consumer price inflation toward the bank’s goal of just under 2 percent. At a conference in Frankfurt, Germany, Coeure stressed the central bank’s independence from government pressures and said that “this is a country where our independence should be upheld.” The ECB recently stepped up its injections of newly created money into the economy through bond purchases in an effort to raise inflation. A group of German federal and regional legislators from Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives have reportedly criticized the bank’s efforts as exceeding its powers and lowering interest returns for savers and pension programs. On Tuesday, Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaueble was quoted as saying that ECB policy was “less favorable” for Germany. The ECB must come up with one set of policies for the entire 19-country eurozone; growth is sluggish for the eurozone as a whole but Germany enjoys low unemployment of 4.3 percent and on its own would need less stimulus-oriented policies. The efforts of Pinge village into tourism village originally got full support from the regent of Tabanan. Previously, the regent said that in the future the government will focus on developing tourism village. It also has an impact on the reduction of productive land conversion. With this breakthrough, residents are expected to preserve the environment and culture of the village. “When tourist visit increases, we’re optimistic if the people’s economy will be better because the products created can be sold to visitors for souvenirs. AMLAPURA - The joint team of police and Fish Quarantine officers from Padangbai harbor recently discovered that ocean biota were being smuggled through Padangbai Harbor, Karangasem. After having stopped lobster smugglers last week, the team went on to stop a coral smuggling operation on Wednesday afternoon (Apr. 4 ). They managed to stop 1.750 pieces of coral stored in styrofoam boxes, from leaving the harbor. Head of the Fish Quarantine Office for Padangbai Harbor, Suroso said his officers were suspicious of the Titian bus that had arrived from Lombok’s Lembar Harbor with license plate number EA 7777 BG, as it was carrying dozens of styrophoam boxes in its baggage compartment. Before the bus could leave the harbor, the Padangabai Marine Police and the Fish Quaratine officers intercepted the bus and performed a search in which they found pieces of coral reef wrapped in plastic bags. “The coral was headed for Banyuwangi but because coral is contraband, we stopped them from going any further” said Suroso. The 1.750 pieces of coral found in the strofoam boxes have an estimated market value of Rp 43.750.000. According to Suroso this type of coral is from Perairan Sumawa, West Nusa Tenggara(NTB). The joint team immediately questioned the driver of the bus who finally told the officers that from Padangbai he was planning to drive to Ubung Terminal where he was to leave 6 boxes of the coral and then continue on to Gilimanuk Hrabor where 15 boxes would be left while the rest were destined for Ketapang Harbor, Banyuwangi. Suroso explained that the confiscation of the evidence was conducted according to Law No.5 , year 1990 on Biological and Ecosystem Natural Resource Conservation. This smuggling of coral also violates Law No.16, year 1992 on the Qaurantine of Flora and Fauna. The confiscated evidence will be handed over to the Class I Fish Quarantine, Quality Control and Fisheries Safety Bureau, for further processing. Last week (Sun Apr.3), the joint team also managed to intercept the smuggling of lobster through Padangbai Harbor. They suspected a certain vehicle arriving from Lembar Harbor, Lombok and after searching said vehicle they found a large box containing 1.086 lobsters wrapped in 12 plastic bags with an estimated market value of IDR 27.150.000. The officers were forced to take action as the vehicle arrived in Padangbai, because the driver was in violation of Article 3 of the Ministry of Fisheries Regulation No. 1 year 2015 on the Capturing of Lobster, Crab and Small. Crab. This rule made by Minister Susi Pudjiastuti, in article 3, stipulates that the catching of lobster (Panulirus spp), crab (Scylla spp) and small crab (Portunus pelagicus spp) must be done according to their size: lobster must be more that 8cm , crab must be more than 5cm and small crab must be over 10cm. The regulation also stipulated the method for measuring these sea creatures and any creature smaller than that described in the regulation have the right to be protected. (kmb31)

GIANYAR - Bali rice variety indeed should be conserved by farmers because it clearly has better quality than hybrid rice. Moreover, when the rice is nurtured with organic fertilizer, this variety is healthier to be consumed. Rice of this variety has a higher economic value, reaching IDR 20,000 in the market. Subak Belong at Tarukan village, Tampaksiring, for instance, has successfully harvested this Bali rice variety for the second time with abundant yields within 135 days. Harvesting process of the Bali rice variety on an area of 0.54 hectare at Subak Belong could produce 5.28 tons of rice. The result was certainly more than the first harvest with the yields of 3.85 tons on an area of 0.27 hectare. “After the success of the first harvest, the other farmers also started planting the Bali rice variety because of the quality and result are far more abundant than the usual rice varieties,” said chief of Subak Belong, I Wayan Budiana, amid the harvest of Bali rice variety at local subak (Balinese irrigation cooperative) together with dozens of farmers and the ranks of the 1616/Gianyar Military District, Wednesday (Apr. 6). He explained that during the process of planting seedlings of the Bali rice variety obtained from the Tarukan Ashram, he applied the jajar legowo system pursuant to direction of the Gianyar Agriculture Agency and the 1616/Gianyar District
Military Command. “Before planting rice, we made appropriate distance pursuant to jajar legowo-21 system. This system makes maximum light absorption, so that the rice can grow well. In addition, this Bali rice variety does not require a lot of water,” he said accompanied by the Gianyar Military District chief of staff, Wayan Suwitantra. Furthermore, on the pilot project land located 10 km from Tampaksiring Presidential Palace, the farmers only use organic fertilizers. Besides, for pest management they use vegetal pesticide made from organic ingredients. “Organic fertilizer is used only once. If more than once, the rice plants can be obese and this will provoke leafhoppers, grasshoppers and other insects,” he said. Chief of the subak admitted that maintaining the quality of Bali rice, by reducing the use of fertilizers and chemicals, is required extra supervision and foresight
of farmers for four months and 15 days. “When seeing any white spot in the rice plant, it should be immediately cleaned. Otherwise it will become a source of leafhoppers. In short, it is required a foresight and perseverance of farmer until the harvest yield is abundant as it is today,” he said. In the meantime, the Unit Head of Tampaksiring Agricultural Integrated Services, I Ketut Warta, revealed the price of Bali rice variety reaches IDR 20,000 per kg, much more expensive than hybrid rice at IDR 11,000 per kg. Unfortunately, farmers are currently experiencing difficulties to market the Bali rice. “Rice of this local variety has very good quality and the price surely soars to more than IDR 20,000. If sold to hotel, the price can even penetrate IDR 30,000,” he said. The Head of the Gianyar Agriculture Agency, Made Raka, expressed his support for the preservation of Bali rice variety. Moreover, this variety has clearly better quality than other rice as well as has a high economic value. “Currently, the rice variety is cultivated at Subak Pulagan and Subak Belong. California bill to fight fashion models’ eating disorders advances
SACRAMENTO - A California bill aimed at reducing eating disorders among models cleared its first legislative hurdle on Wednesday, following efforts in several countries to fight extreme thinness in an industry that pressures models to lose weight. The measure would require the state to develop health standards for models and regard them as employees of the brands they represent. “The goal of the bill is not only to protect the health of the workers themselves, but also to help young people who emulate models,” said the bill’s author, state Assemblyman Marc Levine, a Democrat who represents the Marin County suburbs of San Francisco. Last year, France banned excessive thinness in models, partly in response to the death in 2010 of Isabelle Caro, a 28-year-old former French fashion model.
She died from anorexia after posing for a photographic campaign to raise awareness about the illness. Israel enacted a similar measure in 2013, while Italy and Spain rely on voluntary codes of conduct to protect models. The California bill passed the Assembly Labor and Employment Committee on Wednesday. When visiting Nusa Penida, the Regent of Klungkung, I Nyoman Suwirta, asserted the buildings on the shoreside do not have permission. In accordance with the rules of coastal borderline, there should be no buildings within 100 meters from the shoreline. Other than violating the rules, the buildings in front of the beach denoting public area even becomes private area. Regent Suwirta revealed that the
government does not prohibit investors to participate in the tourism development in Nusa Penida. Moreover, not a few local entrepreneurs from Nusa Penida also participate in building tourist accommodations on the island. The Ministry of Transportation has also issued edict No15 , year 2016 on the adjustment of tariffs for public transportation of 3.5 percent. However this edict has not been applied in all regions. In Tabanan for example, tariffs for public transport in urban areas (Angkot) and in villages (Angdes) are still charging the same IDR 5,000 per ride as before the edict was issued. When contacted on Wednesday, Head of Tabanan’ Bureau of Tranpsortation and Com munications, (Dishub), I Made Agus Harta Wiguna responded by saying that they only receive the Ministerial edict last Tuesday (Apr.4). Wiguna added that they will be coordinating with the Regency of Tabanan’s Transport Association (Organda) as soon
as possible regarding the tariff adjustment. He added however, that according to the regulation that demands a 3.5 percent decrease in the cost of transport, Angkot and Angdes tariffs would only go down by IDR 150 per ride. This amount is very small he said and hard to be applied, he said.. Possible alternatives still need to be discussed regarding the adjustment of public transport tariffs. ”We will discuss the matter with the transport association and bus drivers as soon as possible” said Wiguna. Meanwhile tariffs for student bus service Trans Serasi, said this former Head of West Selemadeg Sementara will not change. Hundreds of party cadres at the branch and sub-branch level of the PDI-P Jembrana were seen gathering around and fogging at people’s settlement, Tuesday morning (Apr. 5). Other than fogging, a number of party members also distributed abate powder to kill mosquito larvae. Residents were encouraged to regularly do mosquito nest eradication. “We do this effort spontaneously and there is no connection whatsoever. We are touched personally and organizationally to help fight against the dengue,” said the Chairman of the PDI-P Jembrana, I Made Kembang Hartawan. Kembang participating directly in the fogging realized that it does not resolve the problem. However, an important thing is to grow collective awareness, at least it can lessen dengue through clean and healthy lifestyle. This effort will be continuously carried out at a number of villages in the Negara town known to have rampant dengue cases. Based on the data of the Jembrana Health Agency, a total of 215 residents have been recorded to be affected by dengue since last January. The cases are scattered across the subdistricts in Jembrana. Prior to the actions of fighting against dengue, a number of agencies such as the Indonesia Military (TNI), health centers and local community in Jembrana already did environmental cleanup and eradication against the mosquito nests. The three healthy, newborn wild babies being lovingly cared for by the team of professional animal keepers at the Park are a white African rhinoceros, a giraffe and a hippopotamus. Singo, the baby giraffe, is the offspring of Sophie (7 years) and Matadi (6 years) who roam the wide spaces of the African Section of the Park’s Safari Journey. Pembe, the rare white rhino is the baby daughter of Hima (24 years) and Nelson (21) – more popularly known to animal keepers and visitors as Mr. and Mrs. Nelson, and was born on November 4, 2015. Rounding out the trio of newborn animals is Maji, the male hippopotamus born to proud hippo mom Dita, on March 24, 2016. All three babies were the re-
sult of a natural birthing process without any human intervention, with a team of expert veterinarians monitoring the entire process on close-circuit TV and ready to intervene if required. Dr. Nimal Fernando, Manager Life and Science, at the Bali Safari and Marine Park explained the kind of difficulties encountered by his team in trying to propagate captive rare animal species: “Frankly, it’s not easy to get two African rhinos to mate. ‘Pembe’ is the first baby rhino born at the Park since ‘Hima’s’ arrival in Bali six years ago. For mating to occur, the male rhino must physically conquer his partner, a ritual that proved difficult for ‘Nelson’ who is several years younger than his mate. To consummate the relationship between the two rhinos and cause ‘Hima’ to become pregnant the Bali Safari Team undertook a number of supporting strategies, including providing special nutritional enrichment to improve
the fecundity of ‘Hima’ and ‘Nelson’.” African white rhinos represent an endangered species, with the Bali Safari and Marine Park the only home to this rare animal on the entire Island. And, because such births are rare, news of the Park’s successful breeding of a baby rhino was welcomed as exciting news in conservation circles worldwide. The birth of baby animals of every variety represents joyful news at the Park, with both the animal parents and the Park’s human family eager to introduce the “new kids on the Park” to a wider world. Please if you could try and understand that it’s important that I do this now. I have to rest up, doctor’s orders,” Jackson said. Jackson, who has no children,
did not clarify whether she was pregnant, hoped to become pregnant, or was planning to adopt. Her representatives did not respond to requests for comment. The story follows Ravenna and her sister Freya (Blunt) as they seek kingdom domination with The Huntsman and his bow and arrow wielding love interest Sara (Chastain) battling to defeat them in their quest. “With this specific genre, it’s usually that the girl is tied to a tree and the guy has to save her and there’s a lot of damsels in distress,” Blunt told Reuters. “I think this fairytale just adopts a different dynamic between men and women ... I remember it really struck me when I read the script that they were so layered and nuanced and different from each other as well.” While Ravenna will stop at nothing to remain the fairest in the land, Freya turns into an icy-hearted villainess after losing her child. Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Depasar Police, Commander Reinhard Habonaran Nainggolan, explained that a group of European police have ranked Bali no3 and Indonesia no7 in terms of bank customer data theft. Bali is apparently not only vulnerable to narcotics but also to bank hackers. “One of the syndicates operating in Bali is from Bularia, and a Criminial Investigation Team from the Indonesian Police Headquarters tracked some members of the syndicate and finally arrested them in Serbia. They were operating in Bali” said Reinhard, on Wednesday (Arp 4). According to Reinhard, based on information from the hackers that have already been caught, they can siphon up to IDR 2 billion per day from bank customers. “But the recently captures suspect Yanko Ivanov has yet to confess, even though he was caught taking action at BNI at Hardy’s Nusa Dua and the BNI ATM in Seminyal, Kuta”, he said. UEFA Offices Raided Over Panama Papers Scandal
GENEVA - Swiss police have raided UEFA’s offices after its former secretary general and now FIFA president Gianni Infantino became embroiled in the Panama Papers scandal. Documents leaked from Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca reportedly show he signed a contract on behalf of UEFA to sell TV rights for the Champions League and other club competitions. Mr Infantino, in his former role as UEFA director of legal services, co-signed the contract in 2006 with two businessmen who have since been caught up in football’s corruption case, according to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) analysing the 11
million leaked files. Both UEFA and the 46-year-old Swiss-Italian deny any wrongdoing. UEFA said in a statement: “UEFA can confirm that today we received a visit from the office of the Swiss Federal Police acting under a warrant and requesting sight of the contracts between UEFA and Cross Trading/Teleamazonas. “Naturally, UEFA is providing the Federal Police with all relevant documents in our possession and will co-operate fully.” Mr Infan-
tino’s alleged deal was with Hugo Jinkis and his son Mariano Jinkis, who have since been accused of bribery as part of the US investigation into corruption at FIFA. Both are currently under house arrest in Argentina. Their Argentinian company Cross Trading was registered in the South Pacific tax haven of Niue, and bought the TV rights for $111,000 (£78,780), according to ICIJ. The rights were immediately sold to Ecuadorian broadcaster Teleamazonas for $311,170 (£220,800). UEFA had initially denied doing business with any of the 14 individuals indicted by the FBI,
but now admits its response was incomplete. After a review of thousands of commercial contracts, it accepts the deal was done as part of an “open tender” - a process conducted by Team Marketing on behalf of UEFA - and the rights were sold to the highest bidder. Mr Infantino said in a statement: “If my determination to restore football’s reputation was already very strong, it is now even stronger. I welcome any investigation conducted into this matter. “For the sake of transparency and clarity, it is essential that all elements of this dossier are disclosed,
