Magistrate orders French expresident Sarkozy to stand trial
PARIS - A magistrate has ordered former French president Nicolas Sarkozy to stand trial over irregularities in the funding of his failed 2012 re-election bid, a judicial source said on Tuesday.The charge against Sarkozy, who led France for five years from 2007, exposes the 62-year old conservative politician to a one-year prison sentence if convicted. Sarkozy’s lawyer Thierry Herzog described the trial order as “inane” and said he would lodge an appeal against it. One of two magistrates handling the case ordered the trial on the charge that Sarkozy spent way more than he was entitled to, despite warnings
from his accountants. The source, who was speaking on condition of anonymity as is often the case in France when initial announcements of trials are made, said 13 others would also face trial over the affair. Lawyer Herzog highlighted the fact that
only one of the two magistrates in charge of the case signed the trial order. “The clear disagreement between the two magistrates in charge of the matter is such a rare event that it is worth underlining, as it illustrates the inanity of the decision,” he said in a statement. The trial order comes at a time when French politicians face growing scrutiny over their personal and political finances in the build-up to this year’s presidential election in April
and May. Sarkozy’s conservative predecessor Jacques Chirac was convicted in 2011, after his retirement, of misusing public funds to keep political allies in phantom jobs. That was the first conviction of a French head of state since Nazi collaborator Marshal Philippe Petain in 1945. Conservative Francois Fillon, who beat rivals including Sarkozy to become the centreright’s candidate in this year’s race, has been engulfed by a scandal over payments of public
funds to his wife and children. Abrasion starts to threaten southern coastal areas
ASIDE from being invaded by marine debris, the southern coastal region is now haunted by the abrasion issue. During this monsoon, a number of beaches start to have the impacts such as in the area of Kedonganan, Kuta and a number of beaches in the southern areas.
Head of the Badung Fisheries Agency, Made Badra, said that currently a number of beaches experience abrasion, while the handling will certainly be done as soon as possible. Such handling must still have to pay attention to weather conditions. “We are still waiting for fine weather. As for the pattern, it seems to be similar to what we’ve done with the Public Works and Spatial Planning (PUPR) on Kuta Beach,” he concluded. Head of the Kedonganan beach tourism area management (BPKP2K), Wayan Mertha, added that such
beach condition is recognized to indeed become an annual cycle. Moreover, it is believed to return to normal condition in March or April. With this condition, Mertha hoped that local government can take short-term measure. The expectation is related to the status of Kedonganan Beach is an international tourist destination. “We are in the BPKP2K certainly not able to do that. Thus, we do hope for help from local government so that people, especially the management of cafés, can still sell maximally,” he hoped. Mertha added that such condition almost occurred across the coastal landscapes around the cafés at Kedonganan. The coastline at Kedonganan totally extends along 1,000 meters. Approximately 600 meters of them sits around the cafés of Kedonganan. “So, the coastal abrasion happens to approximately 500 to 600 meters,” he said. (kmb23)

Traffic diversion makes Kuta art market deserted
TRAFFIC diversion in Kuta begins to have an impact on the people’s economy. As seen at the Kuta art market, it has started to lack visitors since the trial carried out until Monday (Feb. 6). Actually, before the implementation of traffic diversion, travelers always come to shop. “Actually, location of my shop is slightly in the front row, we usually can sell some merchandises. From 10:00 to 15:00, absolutely there are no travelers dropping by,” said a merchant at Kuta Art Market, I Luh Rusmayanti. Chief of Kuta customary village, Wayan Suwarsa, who continuously does monitoring, said that traffic diversion has caused accumulation at some points and has an impact on people’s economy. One of the impacts is the Kuta art market began to empty. Automatically it affects 204 customary villagers who sell on the land belonging to custom-
ary villages. Previously, visitors had three options of road access to the traditional market. They were from Jalan Bakung Sari and directly leading to the market, Jalan Kartika Plaza and from Kuta Beach through Kuta Square. With the current restriction, the direct access to the art market is from Jalan Bakungsari westward. When people would like to go the art market, they must pass Tuban first toward Kartika Plaza. If visitors are from Kuta Beach, they must return to Jalan Ciung Wanara. Thus, now visitors only have one access. “Nowadays, there have been many complaints received from the community, not only related to the art market. His village administration will make an evaluation. Later on, the results of evaluation based on community’s inputs will be submitted to relevant agencies,” he added. (kmb)

Fighting fake news isn’t just up to Facebook and Google
NEW YORK — The fight against fake news is not just being waged by Google, Facebook and big media companies.
They are joined in the battle by academics and data scientists who started work on the subject years before bogus news stories were suspected of helping sway the 2016 presidential election. Their work has yielded tools that help track how “alternative facts” spread, and others that let you identify fake stories or block them altogether. Some of these are still baby steps, but they’re a key, if largely unsung, part of the effort to tamp down the spread of fake stories. And the researchers were there first. For Giovanni Luca Ciampaglia, a research scientist at Indiana University, the phenomenon first caught his eye during the Ebola crisis in 2014. “We started seeing a lot of content that was spreading, completely fabricated claims about importations of Ebola, (such as) entire towns in Texas being under quarantine,” he says. “What caught our attention was that these claims were created using names of publications that sounded like newspapers. And they were getting a lot of traction on social media.” So he helped create a tool tracking how unsubstantiated claims spread online. DECIPHERING TWITTER RUMORS
Tanushree Mitra, a doctoral student at the Georgia Institute of Technology, began a project three years ago to see how misinformation and fake news spread through Twitter. At the time, she says, “companies like Facebook and Twitter were not paying much attention.” What attracted her to the project was the prevalence of fake news that spread online following natural disasters such as Superstorm Sandy in 2012. When she saw that people were sharing a lot of incorrect or misleading information about the events, Mitra decided to track both big stories and smaller rumors with the goal of creating an app that could help ordinary people sort fact from fiction so they can make decisions that could be crucial to their wellbeing. Mitra and her fellow researchers scanned 66 million tweets linked to nearly 1,400 real-world events to identify words and phrases linked to perceived levels of credibility. Looking at tweets surrounding news events in 2014 and 2015 — including the Ebola crisis, the Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris and the death of Eric Garner in a confrontation of police officers in New York City — they asked people to judge tweets based on how credible they thought the posts were. Words such as “eager,” ‘’terrific” and “undeniable” were linked to more credible posts, while words such as “ha,” ‘’grins” and “suspects” were the opposite. A computer matched the humans’ opinions 68 percent of the time. The next step, an app, could help people rate the credibility of tweets and other social media posts.
TRACKING HOAXES
A group of researchers at Indiana University have created an online tool called Hoaxy that seeks to visualize “the spread of claims and related fact checking online.” Although it’s still a work in progress, Hoaxy can trace the origin of, for instance, the false claim that millions of votes in the 2016 presidential election were cast by “illegal aliens.” Type in your search terms and Hoaxy will report back with stories that spread the claims, as well as fact-checking articles that debunked it. In this instance, the claim goes back to a November article from Infowars.com that was shared 17,961 times on Twitter and 52,200 times on Facebook, according to Hoaxy. The site only tracks actual links people shared, so it misses anything that’s paraphrased or posted without a link. A data visualization tool shows the intertwined web of Twitter users who spread both the claims and the fact checks, and how they are connected to one another. The researchers focused on Twitter because the service makes more data available to the public, which makes it easier to use in datatracking tools than Facebook. LEAD A HORSE TO WATER
Tools like Hoaxy or rumor-identification apps are only helpful if people use them. The same goes for another approach — using a web browser plug-in to identify or block fake-news stories. For instance, the Chrome extension “Fake News Alert,” created last year, says it will tell you when you are visiting a site “known for spreading fake news.” But there are a few drawbacks. Many people aren’t willing to go to the trouble of adding new extensions to their browser. And such extensions only work on the desktop version of Chrome, not its mobile counterpart. “Fake News Alert” also uses a widely circulated but oftcriticized list of fake and misleading news sites assembled by a Merrimack College professor. The list casts a very broad net and includes some established, but highly partisan sites such as the right-wing Breitbart News and the left-wing Occupy Democrats. A final obstacle: While fake news has been in the real news a lot, many people simply aren’t that aware of it. “A lot of consumers are not savvy about it,” says Larry Chiagouris, a marketing professor at Pace University who follows the fake news phenomenon. “And of those that are — and it’s a small number— not a lot of them add plug-ins to browsers.” EDUCATE THE PEOPLE

Chiagouris believes we are at the “beginning of the beginning” when it comes to defining just what fake news is and how to combat it. But he and other experts say technological solutions like apps and plug-ins are unlikely to get to the root of the problem. The real solution, he says, will start in school: “not college, grammar school.” The better educated and informed the public is, the more likely they are going to be “asking questions and exploring alternative sources of information,” says Mike Posner, cofounder and co-director of the NYU Stern Center for Business and Human Rights. “What you really want is people saying they want to see different sides of an issue, looking at things by people who don’t agree with me, so one (part of the solution) is public education.” (ap)
Honda, Hitachi Automotive to develop, make electric vehicles
TOKYO — Japanese automaker Honda Motor Co. has signed a deal with Hitachi Automotive Systems to jointly develop, make and sell motors for electric vehicles, as the industry adapts to concerns over global warming and the environment.
The companies announced the agreement Tuesday. Honda, which also makes its own electric motors, has a fuel-cell vehicle and hybrids in its lineup. It’s planning an electric vehicle for sale later this year, mostly abroad.
The wholly owned subsidiary of Tokyo-based Hitachi has supplied electric motors to other automakers in the past, including General Motors Co. of the U.S. and Nissan Motor Co., which makes the Leaf electric car. The deal, signed last week, is
part of a big push by Honda into electric cars. The joint venture, which has yet to be named, will be 51 percent owned by Hitachi and will have manufacturing and sales operations in the U.S. and China, the companies said.
Global environmental regulations are expected to grow stricter, pushing up demand for electric vehicles, they said. The joint venture, capitalized at 5 billion yen ($45 million), will be based in Hitachinaka city, north of Tokyo. (ap)

Complained by people, traffic changes in Kuta evaluated
MANGUPURA - Complaints of community related to traffic changes in Kuta area resulting in congestion will be immediately followed up. The government of Badung through the Transportation Agency will evaluate related to the traffic changes. Acting Head of the Badung Transportation Agency, Wayan Weda Dharmaja, when making site inspection on Sunday (Feb. 5) said the traffic changes at the tourist village is in principle to overcome the bottlenecks frequently occurred in the region. “This change is just begun a few days ago, so it takes time to conduct a study and evaluation,” he said. Assessment and evaluation, said Weda Dharmaja, are meant to parse the intersections that may hamper the traffic as a result of the changes in the direction of traffic. “Studies and evaluation need to be made for the four-way intersection at Temacun hamlet,” he said. He revealed that the change in direction of traffic in Kuta area aims to reduce and overcome the congestion complained all this time by Kuta
residents and travelers. “So, it is not intended to move congestion to other road sections,” he said. He said the site inspection on the changes in the direction of traffic in Kuta area is meant to determine the points of intersection that cause traffic congestions after the direction has been changed. “To change back to the previous direction of traffic cannot be implemented this time considering that the incoming vehicle traffic to Kuta is not balanced with the vehicles coming out of Kuta area,” he explained. Besides, the volume of vehicle traffic entering Kuta was recognized by Weda Dharmaja to have exceeded the capacity when compared to the existing roads. “Indeed, every change will reap pros and cons,” he said. On that account, the Transportation Agency asks for help and participation of Kuta community and facilitates the road users to follow the traffic in Kuta. DENPASAR - Circulation of hoax news related to terrorist act that will take action in Bali makes security forces furious, including Commander of the 163/Wira Satya Military Resort, Nyoman Cantiasa. He mentioned the US embassy warning regarding the potential terror in Bali that will target nightclubs and shopping centers is not true. “Results of coordination and report from the ranks of intelligence indicate that hoax news was circulating in social media in February 2016. However, there is individual uploading it again through social media in 2017. It aims to create public unrest, and the news like this is a threat of tourism in Bali,” affirmed Cantiasa on Sunday (Feb. 5). His institution has contacted colleagues at the US Embassy in Jakarta and it already denied the news. “I have contacted (phoned) my counterparts at the US Embassy in Jakarta, they are even confused because when there is news related to the security of its citizens, it will be usually informed to the staff at the embassy,” he said. He hoped the people of Bali must be smart in receiving and reading the news in social media as it tends to be negative. He regretted the news in social media cannot serve as education because the source is not clear and not responsible. Moreover, the political issues related to gubernatorial
election are getting hotter. In response to the condition, Cantiasa ordered the ranks of intelligence to remain vigilant, monitor and map the possible threat of terrorism within his territory. Detection and early prevention must be persistently improved by urging all the Balinese people to remain vigilant. In addition, to anticipate the threat of terror, especially Bali having black experiences like the first Bali bombing in 2002 and second Bali bombing in 2005. Patrols and raid against migrants having been running all this time should be increased by involving military, national police, municipal police and pecalang (customary security guard). The ranks of military resort also continuously promote the efforts of defending the country to all young people and other components of society in their respective roles so as to have the nationalism. “Do not let be affected by non-conventional threats such as terrorism and proxy war,” he said while adding that his institution continues to improve coordination with intelligence ranks in Bali, whether BIN, BAIS, national police or other intelligence ranks in Bali. “Essentially all the threats will not happen if we can take preventive measures and early detection. MANGUPURA - Plastic waste does not only adorn the edge of Kuta Beach. Similar condition is also seen on almost all tourist beaches in Badung. As a result, some travelers complained about the beach condition that looks dirty filled with plastic waste.
“The waste is quite a lot. Unfortunately, this wonderful beach becomes dirty and nasty,” complained a domestic traveler named Ruditya from Jakarta when walking down the Kedonganan Beach on Sunday (Feb. 5). Plastic waste is not only strewn along the coastline due to the waves crashing ashore. Assorted plastic waste, bottles of liquor to organic waste can also be seen to the middle of the beach. “Probably, the rain over the past few days has caused flooding in rivers so that they bring in these various waste into the sea through the mouth of the river,” he said. This middle-aged man who claimed to regularly travel to Bali for business affairs also revealed that the waste going to the sea due to bad behavior of people who used to throw garbage into the river. Invasion of marine debris at a number of beach tourist attractions in Badung district was justified by the Head of the Badung Environment and Sanitation Agency (DLHK), Putu Eka Merthawan. He said that February 2017 will become the peak of
extreme weather as predicted by the national weather service (BMKG), so the surge in the volume of waste is inevitable. “It (plastic waste—Ed) had disappeared, but now appears again. Moreover, it stretches to Kedonganan Beach,” he said. According to him, the volume of waste increases so that the DLHK Badung becomes overwhelmed to face the piles of waste that is getting worse, especially on Kedonganan Beach. “It mostly consists of plastic waste whose volume reaches two tons per day. It is like a test case for us because the plastic waste almost appears on all the beaches,” he explained. To overcome the problems, the DLHK fielded about 500 janitors to handle waste on the beaches in Badung. In addition to optimizing the janitors, his agency also equips them with three loaders and 15 trucks. “With the support of heavy equipment, we remain overwhelmed,” he said. In addition, the regular waste also increases by 25 tons per day comprising organic and plastic waste. Normally, total daily waste volume in Badung reaches 248 tons. This also happens due to higher rainfall. So, the total volume of waste in Badung both on the beaches and regular waste reaches 275 tons per day. “Just imagine how tired we are struggling for handling the waste. To utilize Japanese cave for tourist attraction
Canada reintroduces bison to Banff National Park
SEMARAPURA - Condition of Japanese cave in Banjarangkan subdistrict gets attention from the Regent of Klungkung, I Nyoman Suwirta. On Monday (Feb. 6), accompanied by Deputy Regent Made Kasta, Regent Suwirta came down along the Japanese cave to explore the existing potential and prepare the arrangement plan of Japanese cave as a tourist attraction in Banjarangkan subdistrict. Regent Suwirta and the entourage of district government made a visit to the Japanese cave. They were received by local community leaders consisting of temple priests, headman, chief of customary village and chief of subak organization. In the meantime, the Bali Institute for Preservation of Cultural Heritage represented by Wayan Muliarsa was meant to check the condition of the Japanese cave heritage. To note, the cave was made by Japanese soldiers in 1941 to 1942. The cave was created for the protection of Japanese army in an attempt to defend themselves from the attack of allied forces during the World War II. The cave has totally 16 holes with the depth of reaching 14 meters linked by a corridor extending from the north to the south. Interestingly, all this time the government of Klungkung has not dared to make arrangement to the Japanese Cave because it has been included into cultural heritage by the Heritage Preser-
vation Agency for Bali, NTB and NTT region. However, Wayan Muliarsa, as the representative of the Bali Institute for Preservation and Cultural Heritage said that based on Law No.11/2010 the management of cultural heritage is participatory. In other words, the management of cultural heritage involves the participation of stakeholders consisting of society, academicians, NGOs, private sector and local government. “I really appreciate to the measure of district government in managing the Japanese cave. Local government both provincial and district level play an important role, not only in the protection and development but also in the utilization of the cultural heritage for the benefit of society,” said Wayan Muliarsa. He also added that local government will involve geological agency in developing and utilizing the Japanese cave heritage. The price is possible when getting a quota from PLN or the state for renewable energy. “Meanwhile, PLN sells to community for only USD 0.09, so that it will need much subsidy when sold for USD 0.15. Now, let’s talk about condition overseas. In Malaysia, the state pays as much as USD 0.30 for renewable energy, while the tapping fee is USD 30. So, companies are interested in such condition. They get from tapping fee and from the sale of electricity though the electricity is cheap,” he said. According to Pastika, the waste accumulated is planned to be used to produce fertilizer and paving block. In the meantime, the calculation of levy rates of waste management or sanitation has been made based on comprehensive

formulation. “Nevertheless, in the future the waste or sanitation management matters must be resolved in a comprehensive manner,” he added. Related to suggestions for serious enforcement of sanctions, Pastika admitted that the sanctions have already been set forth in the previous regulation. It has also been put back in the draft of this regulation. “This sanction has been implemented, but remains to have many shortcomings. Hopefully, the parliament could give the support to supervise the implementation,” he said. Before set into regional bylaw, said Pastika, the regional bylaw draft on public service levies must be disseminated to the public beforehand. Israel legalizes settler homes on private Palestinian land
JERUSALEM - Israel passed a law on Monday retroactively legalizing about 4,000 settler homes built on privately owned Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank, a measure that has drawn international concern. The legislation has been condemned by Palestinians as a blow to their hopes of statehood. But its passage may only be largely symbolic as it contravenes Israeli Supreme Court rulings on property rights. Israel’s attorney-general has said it is unconstitutional and that he will not defend it at the Supreme Court. Though the legislation, passed by a vote of 60 to 52, was backed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition, it has raised tensions in the government. A White House official said that, given the new law is expected to face challenges in Israeli courts, the
Trump administration “will withhold comment on the legislation until the relevant court ruling.” Political sources have said Netanyahu privately opposes the bill over concerns it could provide grounds for prosecution by the International Criminal Court in The Hague. CALGARY - Parks Canada has reintroduced a herd of plains bison to the country’s oldest national park in Banff, Alberta, officials said on Monday, more than 130 years after the iconic North American animal last grazed the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rockies. The conservation team moved 16 bison from a protected herd in central Alberta into an enclosed pasture in Banff National Park in the west of the province last week. The herd will stay under observation in the remote Panther Valley until summer 2018, when the animals will be released into the full 1,189-square-km (460-squaremile) reintroduction zone in the park’s eastern valleys. Parks Canada said bison were once dominant grazers and that bringing them back would restore their missing role in Banff’s ecosystem. “This would be one of only four plains bison herds in North America that would be fully interacting with their predators and shaping the ecosystem as they did over a hundred years ago,” said Kasper Heuer, the bison reintroduction project manager. Those predators will include wolves and bears native to the park. Ten pregnant female bison and six young bulls were disease tested
and radio collared before being herded into five shipping containers and driven 400 km (250 miles) cross Alberta by truck. The conservation team taped rubber hoses to their horns to prevent the animals injuring each other while in transit. Since the Panther Valley is not accessible by road, officials attached the shipping containers by long line to a helicopter and flew them in one at a time for the last 25 km (16 miles). Vast bison herds of up to 30 million animals once migrated freely across North America. The animal was nearly hunted to extinction, and rangers estimate bison have not grazed in Banff National Park since before it was established in 1885. Bison have great spiritual meaning for North America’s aboriginal groups, having once provided an important source of food, clothing and shelter. The reintroduction also coincides with the 150th anniversary of Canada’s 1867 confederation into a federal union. “This is a historic moment and a perfect way to mark Canada’s 150,” Environment and Climate Change Minister Catherine McKenna said in a statement. “Not only are bison a keystone species and an icon of Canada’s history, they are an integral part of the lives of indigenous peoples.” (rtr)

U.S. Chamber of Commerce warns against tearing up NAFTA trade deal
OTTAWA - Any move to tear up the North American Free Trade Agreement would devastate the economies of members Canada, Mexico and the United States, the head of an influential U.S. business group said on Monday. U.S. President Donald Trump, who says NAFTA has been a disaster for American workers, wants to renegotiate the deal and says he is prepared to walk away if he does not get the changes he wants. Thomas Donohue, president and chief executive officer of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, said Canada and Mexico were America’s two top export markets. “Withdrawing from NAFTA would be devastating for the workers, businesses, and economies of our countries,” he told a business audience in the Canadian capital Ottawa. “Beneath all the debates, arguments, and attention-grabbing headlines, I think our leaders across the board understand this,” said Donohue, who was due to meet Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau later in the day. Canada and Mexico both send the bulk of their exports to the United States and would suffer badly if NAFTA were ripped up. Since Trump won the election, senior Canadian officials have stressed to their U.S. counterparts how closely linked the two economies are. Trudeau also is fond of noting that 9 million U.S. jobs rely on exports to Canada, a point that Donohue repeated. “First, let’s do no harm. Let’s preserve, protect, and advance the robust trade that supports both of our economies and millions of our workers,” he said. Donohue, who did not criticize Trump, said it was crucial for the United States to keep NAFTA as a single agreement rather than negotiating bilateral deals with Canada and Mexico. “To address areas open for modernization or improvement, we would insist on doing it in a way that doesn’t disrupt the $1.3 trillion worth of trade that depends on NAFTA,” he said. Perrin Beatty, who heads the Canadian chamber of commerce, noted that Trump had promised to boost employment. “You don’t create jobs by dismantling a relationship that works well,” he told reporters after the speech.(rtr)

German industry output posts steepest monthly fall since Jan 2009
BERLIN - Weaker output in manufacturing and construction drove the biggest monthly drop in German industrial production in nearly eight years in December, dashing prospects for robust growth in the final quarter of 2016. The surprisingly feeble figures, published by the Economy Ministry in Berlin on Tuesday, were put down to special factors. They also came after industrial orders posted their strongest rise in around 2-1/2 years in December, pointing to a rebound in manufacturing at the start of the year. Industrial output fell by 3.0 percent on the month, Tuesday’s data showed. This was weaker than any prediction in a Reuters poll and far below the consensus forecast for a rise of 0.3 percent. It was the steepest drop since January 2009. “Even though it looks dramatic, today’s December drop should be taken with a pinch of salt,” ING economist Carsten Brzeski said, adding that special factors such as the unusually cold winter temperatures and an extraordinary Christmas effect were probably the
main reasons for the sharp drop in December. The fall was mainly caused by a 3.4 percent drop in manufacturing output, with production of capital goods especially weak, and a 1.7 percent decrease in construction, the data showed. The November reading was revised up to a rise of 0.5 percent from a previously reported rise of 0.4 percent, helping quarterly output to decline by just -0.1 percent. The Economy Ministry said the outlook was looking better. “Orders in manufacturing and construction and also sentiment indicators in these sectors are signalling a revival of output growth in coming months,” the ministry said. Commerzbank economist Ralph Solveen agreed, saying he expected industrial production to rebound strongly in January.
But ING’s Brzeski gave a more cautious outlook, hinting to political risks such as the unknown outcome of negotiations following Britain’s decision to leave the European Union and a possibly protectionist U.S. trade agenda under Donald Trump. “Uncertainty in and about two of Germany’s most important trading partners, the U.S. and the UK, should put a cap on any upward potential,” he said. Higher demand at home and abroad for goods needed in production drove the biggest monthly increase in German industrial orders since July 2014, pointing to a strong first quarter of 2017. The German economy grew by 1.9 percent in 2016, the strongest rate in half a decade, helped by soaring private consumption, increased state spending on refugees and higher construction investment. For this year, the government expects weaker growth of 1.4 percent due to fewer work days and weaker exports.(rtr)

This kind of cake is not ‘painted’ or ‘drawn’ as the name suggests (lukis in Indonesian means ‘painting or drawing’). However, it is a Balinese cake that tastes sticky, sweet and slightly chewy. It has the shape of small triangle and greenish white color. This cake is classified into consumer-friendly because the ingredients and coloring substance used are from organic herbs. It is made without dyes, sweeteners or preservatives. Similarly, the serving is topped with grated coconut and palm sugar. It will taste better when enjoyed while drinking coffee or tea. Indeed, it is not easy to get this kind of cake. Other than difficult to
get the ingredients, the preparation is also quite complicated. However, stalls at villages, traditional market, pastry shops and some supermarkets have sold it. However, at bakeries and supermarkets this cake has been packed neatly using plastic container. On the contrary, food stalls still serve it manually so that it remains really fresh. Jaja lukis is made from ingredient like sticky rice. Other ingredients include shredded coconut, salt and palm sugar. The preparation takes a long time. Appeals court to hear arguments on Trump’s travel ban
SAN FRANCISCO - The U.S. Justice Department will face off with opponents in a federal appeals court on Tuesday over the fate of President Donald Trump’s temporary travel ban on people from seven Muslim-majority countries, his most controversial act since taking office last month.
Last Friday, U.S. District Judge James Robart suspended Trump’s ban, opening a window for people from the seven affected countries to enter the country. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco will hear arguments over whether to restore the ban from Justice Department lawyers and opposing attorneys for the states of Minnesota and Washington at 3 p.m. PST (2300 GMT). In a tweet on Monday night, Trump said: “The threat from radical Islamic terrorism is very real, just look at what is happening in Europe and the Middle-East. Courts must act fast!” Trump has said the travel measures are designed to protect the country against the threat of terrorism. He has derided Robart, appointed by Republican President
George W. Bush, as a “so-called judge.” In a brief filed on Monday, the Justice Department said the suspension of Trump’s order was too broad and “at most” should be limited to people who were already granted entry to the country and were temporarily abroad, or to those who want to leave and return to the United States. Opponents say the 90-day ban barring entry for citizens from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen and imposing a 120-day halt to all refugees, is illegal. The state of Washington argues it has suffered harm, saying some students and faculty at state universities had been stranded overseas because of the ban. The Republican president’s Jan. 27 executive order sparked protests and chaos at U.S. and overseas airports in the weekend that followed. All the people who had carried out fatal attacks inspired by Islamist militancy in the United States since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks had been U.S. citizens or legal residents, the New America think tank said. LONDON - British lawmakers on Monday rejected the first set of proposed amendments to legislation that would give Prime Minister Theresa May the right to notify the European Union of Britain’s intention to leave the bloc. During seven hours of debate, lawmakers voted against a series of attempts by pro-EU lawmakers to attach extra conditions to May’s plan to begin divorce talks by March 31. Monday’s votes were on the issues of parliamentary scrutiny of the withdrawal process and the involvement of Britain’s devolved administrations. Further votes, on which the government could face greater opposition, are due to take place on Tuesday and Wednesday. Earlier on Monday, May warned lawmakers not to obstruct the will of the British people with amendments to her Brexit legislation, saying she wanted to get on with divorce talks with the EU.
“Our European partners now want to get on with the negotiations, so do I, and so does this house,” May told parliament before the debate began. “The message is clear to all, this house has spoken and now is not the time to obstruct the democratically expressed wishes of the British people. It is time to get on with leaving the European Union.” May has said she expects to win approval from lawmakers in time to stick to her end of the March deadline for triggering Britain’s exit from the EU. On Tuesday lawmakers will continue their scrutiny of the legislation, debating amendments on the final terms of Britain’s withdrawal from the EU as well as those calling for the publication of assessments on the impact of Brexit. AMBON - The Indonesian province of Maluku is ready to become the nations fish production center, as the province constitutes 30 percent of the national fishery output, according to Deputy Governor Zeth Sahuburua. While opening National Press Day and Maluku Expo 2017 here on Monday, Sahuburua declared that the province was ready to become the center for fish production in the country. He stated that the national fish production is nine million tons per year, and 30 percent, or around three million tons, come from Maluku from the waters of Banda, Seram, and Arafura seas.
Malukus waters serve as a habitat for more than three thousand fish species and several hundred identified coral species, with the numbers still rising, and even the healthiest of Caribbean reefs only have 10 to 20 percent of the species in terms of diversity compared to the reefs in Ambon, in particular, and Maluku, in general. The waters of Ambon and Maluku are blessed with various kinds of fish, such as devil scorpionfish, strange octopus, boxer crabs, leaf scorpionfish, nudibranchs galore, weird frogfish, shrimps, stargazers, Flamboyant Cuttlefish, Rhinopious, loads of frogfish, Cockatoo
Waspfish, and ghost pipefish. “It means that the marine potential of Maluku Province is huge,” the deputy governor remarked. Pasir Putih Beach
AMLAPURA - Pasir Putih Beach in East Bali is one of the island’s ‘hidden’ beaches. Despite its remote location, this beach gained popularity being referred to by various nicknames, such as Perasi Beach referring to its village where it is located, including ‘White Sand Beach’, ‘Virgin Beach’ and simply, ‘Hidden Beach’. The secluded coast of Pasir Putih Beach stretches between two hills between the villages of Bugbug and Perasi, both
located in the Karangasem regency and approximately 4.5km east of the main hub of Candidasa. Getting to Pasir Putih Beach is quite an adventurous ride. From the main area of Candidasa, continue onto the Jalan Raya CandidasaBugbug main road until you arrive at the neighbourhood of Perasi village. The best landmark to look out for is the village’s large Pura Bale Agung temple on the northern side of the street (on the left if you come
from Candidasa). You’ll also come across various signs with pointers bearing the various nicknames. From here, a kilometre of rocky trails and dirt tracks lead you down to the shore. Upon arrival, a large parking lot welcomes visitors to Pasir Putih Beach, with ample space for cars and motorbikes under the shade of coconut trees. The waves and sand are visible from here. The name ‘Virgin Beach’ perhaps was what came into the minds of the first foreign visitors who ‘discovered’ the beach and found a pristine stretch of sand with fantastic views of the small rocky islet of Gili Biaha on the horizon. The allure of Pasir Putih lies in its serene setting and calmer waves compared to the popular shores to its west. A unique combination of boulders in the sand near the cliffs, and white sand streaked with black – despite one of its given names, ‘White Sand Beach’ - add to its appeal. Following its growing popularity, several locally-run restaurants and cafes (better referred to as
traditional ‘warung’) can be seen lining the eastern side of Pasir Putih Beach near the parking area. Among the dozen are Warung Maria, Warung Sederhana, Warung Kokak, Virgin Cafe, Warung Sunrise, Warung Gusti & Leo, Warung Budi Ayu, and Relax Cafe. Several others also provide booking services for fishing, snorkelling
and sailing tours. In front of these warung and cafes are colourful parasols and cushioned day beds. At the far western end, traditional jukung outriggers of the fishermen from Perasi and Bugbug can be seen parked in rows, against a backdrop of the rock face known as Bukit Penggiang (the opposite is Bukit Apem). THE Candi Kuning Market, which locals refer to as Pasar Merta Sari Candi Kuning, or simply ‘Pasar Bedugul’, is one of two main markets in the Bedugul area. Candi Kuning Market mostly boasts local farm produce, such as flowers and a wide range of tropical fruits (mangosteen, bananas, tamarillos, tangerines and, most importantly, strawberries – the prize produce of Bedugul. Being a market targeted at travellers, you’ll find souvenirs in the form of generic and kitsch arts and crafts at stalls further inside. Nevertheless, it’s a great place to find a local market scene, with the rule of thumb being (as always): bargain hard! Even the locals do it. A large packet of strawberries - around half a kilo - starts from IDR 25,000 (around USD 1.80). For a simple and very local snack, try some crackers, boiled peanuts or steamed sweetcorn (around IDR 5,000 a cob) sold by peddlers at the roadside. Locals find it an obligatory stop for stocking up on snacks for their ride. This central farmer’s is conveniently located halfway along the western side of the Baturiti-Singaraja route, and between two of Bedugul’s landmark attractions, namely the Beratan Lake with its iconic Ulun Danu Beratan lakeside temple, and the Eka Karya Botanic Gardens. Candi Kuning serves as a great stopover for refreshments in between your tours of Bali’s central region, or en route to the main destinations in North Bali, such as Lovina Beach, via the central highlands. LONDON - A resurgent Rafael Nadal will warm up for Wimbledon by returning to The Queen’s Club for the Aegon Championships in June. The 14-times grand slam champion missed the entire grasscourt season last year with a wrist injury but after finishing runner-up to Roger Federer at the Australian Open, he hopes a good run in west London will bode well in his pursuit of a third Wimbledon title. “I am very happy to be coming back to Queen’s.... It is the best way for me to be ready for Wimbledon,” the Spanish left-hander said in a statement. He lifted the Wimbledon trophy for the first time in 2008 just three weeks after his maiden triumph at Queen’s Club. Nadal’s second Wimbledon title in 2010 also followed a good run at Queen’s and he reached the Wimbledon final five times between 2006 and 2011, making the quarters or better at the London warm-up event prior to each one. Ex-NBA star Rodman gets three years probation on driving charges
LOS ANGELES - Former pro basketball star Dennis Rodman pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years’ informal probation on Monday on charges that he drove the wrong way on a California highway, forcing another car to swerve into a concrete dividing wall. Rodman was also sentenced to 30 hours of community service and ordered to donate $500 to a victim witness emergency fund, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office said. Rodman’s attorney, Paul Meyer, said in an emailed statement: “We appreciate the careful review of the district attorney to make the right call.” Meyer said the incident was caused by “poor sign placement” on the roadway. Prosecutors initially charged Rodman, 55, with hit-and-run that causes property damage, driving a motor vehicle across a dividing section, giving false information to a police officer and driving without a valid license. Rodman, a National Basketball Association forward with teams including the Detroit Pistons and Chicago Bulls, drove his sport utility vehicle the wrong way on
Interstate 5 in Santa Ana early on July 20, prosecutors said. The driver of a sedan going the correct way swerved to avoid a head-on collision with Rodman’s SUV and slammed into a concrete wall along the carpool lane, prosecutors said. Meyer said the crash was documented as a non-injury collision. The driver of the sedan called 911 and California Highway Patrol officers responded. When they arrived, Rodman had driven away, prosecutors said. Investigators determined Rodman was the SUV driver but when they eventually spoke to him, he gave false information about the incident, prosecutors said. The hit-and-run charge was later discharged after the court accepted a civil compromise between Rodman and the victim, prosecutors
said. Rodman pleaded guilty to the remaining three misdemeanors on Monday afternoon in an Orange County Court. The district attorney’s office said Rodman was ordered to pay restitution as part of his sentence, but Meyer said the restitution had already been deemed completed. Rodman, nicknamed “The Worm” during his playing career, is considered one of the best defensive players and rebounders in NBA history. He won five league championships with Detroit and Chicago and is a member of basketball’s Hall of Fame. He was convicted at least twice of driving under the influence, in 2000 and 2004, according to media reports at the time. (rtr)

LONDON — On the training pitches at Arsenal is where Jason Brown feels at peace. Coaching academy players, the retired goalkeeper feels unburdened of the mental anguish. “This is my distraction,” Brown, who played internationally for Wales and in the Premier League for Blackburn, told The Associated Press. “I honestly feel if I didn’t have this distraction (at Arsenal) I might not be having this conversation with you right now.” Instead, Brown is hoping to combat any stigma still attached to those in soccer with mental health issues by speaking out about the depression that struck as his playing career came to an end in 2015. Like many professional athletes, Brown reveled in the adulation of fans in packed stadiums and the elevated status he held in the local community. He also craved the structure in his life: Training, rest, matches. “As silly and naive as it might sound you never think there is going to be an end,” the 34-year-old Brown recalled. “You never think when you retire what it is going to be like.” Then the limelight did fade. No longer was there a routine to follow. And the psychological issues mounted for a player who said he previously never encountered symptoms during his professional career. “I suffer from depression and it’s nothing to be embarrassed about,” Brown states frankly. “I’ll never be cured.” Now it is about trying to cope. A few months ago Brown felt he could not while in his car on a motorway near London. “That probably the lowest I was ... the first real time that I made an attempt to actually, where I considered just killing myself,” Brown said. “I was so down. I was driving along the M1 and I put my foot down and I didn’t take my foot off. And I then I realized that it’s not only me I that I am going to be hurting but possibly others. That was a real low, low day my life.” It was also part of an acceptance that he needed
professional help . Then sitting with his counsellor in October, came a profound and important moment in his post-playing life. “It sounds crazy. I still had the mentality, ‘I am a footballer,’” Brown said. “It didn’t sink and one day it did sink in, sitting with my counsellor ... and I realized I am no longer a football player anymore. It was quite surreal because all I have known and seen myself as is a football player.” Brown isn’t alone. It’s just that few footballers feel comfortable publicly discussing depression or even seeking help in private. England’s Professional Footballers’ Association is trying to break that taboo, hoping to convince their members that talking about mental health problems is not a sign of weakness but strength. “We want to change that mindset,” said Michael Bennett, the PFA’s head of welfare. “It’s important for players to talk about the emotional side of things.” Welsh players including Brown had to deal with the distress of national team manager Gary Speed dying of hanging in 2011. A coroner later ruled there was insufficient evidence to prove that Speed had committed suicide. In 2009, Germany goalkeeper Robert Enke ended his life by stepping in front of a train. “We as football have a duty of care,” said Bennett, whose union backed the #TimetoTalk Day in Britain last week. “We spend a lot of time on the physical aspects of things for the players. I think we need to spend more time on the emotional side. If a player has emotional issues it doesn’t matter how fit they are mentally, if they are not in the right place they can’t perform.” And times are changing. Bennett points to the outpouring of support and sympathy last year for the survivors of sexual abuse he helped. They received private counselling through the PFA, and support in their decision to waive their anonymity to raise awareness of the crimes going on football and the suffering of victims. (ap)

Pasir Putih Beach
AMLAPURA - Pasir Putih Beach in East Bali is one of the island’s ‘hidden’ beaches. Despite its remote location, this beach gained popularity being referred to by various nicknames, such as Perasi Beach referring to its village where it is located, including ‘White Sand Beach’, ‘Virgin Beach’ and simply, ‘Hidden Beach’. The secluded coast of Pasir Putih Beach stretches between two hills between the villages of Bugbug and Perasi, both
located in the Karangasem regency and approximately 4.5km east of the main hub of Candidasa. Getting to Pasir Putih Beach is quite an adventurous ride. From the main area of Candidasa, continue onto the Jalan Raya CandidasaBugbug main road until you arrive at the neighbourhood of Perasi village. The best landmark to look out for is the village’s large Pura Bale Agung temple on the northern side of the street (on the left if you come
from Candidasa). You’ll also come across various signs with pointers bearing the various nicknames. From here, a kilometre of rocky trails and dirt tracks lead you down to the shore. Upon arrival, a large parking lot welcomes visitors to Pasir Putih Beach, with ample space for cars and motorbikes under the shade of coconut trees. The waves and sand are visible from here. The name ‘Virgin Beach’ perhaps was what came into the minds of the first foreign visitors who ‘discovered’ the beach and found a pristine stretch of sand with fantastic views of the small rocky islet of Gili Biaha on the horizon. The allure of Pasir Putih lies in its serene setting and calmer waves compared to the popular shores to its west. A unique combination of boulders in the sand near the cliffs, and white sand streaked with black – despite one of its given names, ‘White Sand Beach’ - add to its appeal. Following its growing popularity, several locally-run restaurants and cafes (better referred to as
traditional ‘warung’) can be seen lining the eastern side of Pasir Putih Beach near the parking area. Among the dozen are Warung Maria, Warung Sederhana, Warung Kokak, Virgin Cafe, Warung Sunrise, Warung Gusti & Leo, Warung Budi Ayu, and Relax Cafe. Several others also provide booking services for fishing, snorkelling
and sailing tours. In front of these warung and cafes are colourful parasols and cushioned day beds. At the far western end, traditional jukung outriggers of the fishermen from Perasi and Bugbug can be seen parked in rows, against a backdrop of the rock face known as Bukit Penggiang (the opposite is Bukit Apem). THE Candi Kuning Market, which locals refer to as Pasar Merta Sari Candi Kuning, or simply ‘Pasar Bedugul’, is one of two main markets in the Bedugul area. Candi Kuning Market mostly boasts local farm produce, such as flowers and a wide range of tropical fruits (mangosteen, bananas, tamarillos, tangerines and, most importantly, strawberries – the prize produce of Bedugul. Being a market targeted at travellers, you’ll find souvenirs in the form of generic and kitsch arts and crafts at stalls further inside. Nevertheless, it’s a great place to find a local market scene, with the rule of thumb being (as always): bargain hard! Even the locals do it. A large packet of strawberries - around half a kilo - starts from IDR 25,000 (around USD 1.80). For a simple and very local snack, try some crackers, boiled peanuts or steamed sweetcorn (around IDR 5,000 a cob) sold by peddlers at the roadside. Locals find it an obligatory stop for stocking up on snacks for their ride. This central farmer’s is conveniently located halfway along the western side of the Baturiti-Singaraja route, and between two of Bedugul’s landmark attractions, namely the Beratan Lake with its iconic Ulun Danu Beratan lakeside temple, and the Eka Karya Botanic Gardens. Candi Kuning serves as a great stopover for refreshments in between your tours of Bali’s central region, or en route to the main destinations in North Bali, such as Lovina Beach, via the central highlands. LONDON - A resurgent Rafael Nadal will warm up for Wimbledon by returning to The Queen’s Club for the Aegon Championships in June. The 14-times grand slam champion missed the entire grasscourt season last year with a wrist injury but after finishing runner-up to Roger Federer at the Australian Open, he hopes a good run in west London will bode well in his pursuit of a third Wimbledon title. “I am very happy to be coming back to Queen’s.... It is the best way for me to be ready for Wimbledon,” the Spanish left-hander said in a statement. He lifted the Wimbledon trophy for the first time in 2008 just three weeks after his maiden triumph at Queen’s Club. Nadal’s second Wimbledon title in 2010 also followed a good run at Queen’s and he reached the Wimbledon final five times between 2006 and 2011, making the quarters or better at the London warm-up event prior to each one. Ex-NBA star Rodman gets three years probation on driving charges
LOS ANGELES - Former pro basketball star Dennis Rodman pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years’ informal probation on Monday on charges that he drove the wrong way on a California highway, forcing another car to swerve into a concrete dividing wall. Rodman was also sentenced to 30 hours of community service and ordered to donate $500 to a victim witness emergency fund, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office said. Rodman’s attorney, Paul Meyer, said in an emailed statement: “We appreciate the careful review of the district attorney to make the right call.” Meyer said the incident was caused by “poor sign placement” on the roadway. Prosecutors initially charged Rodman, 55, with hit-and-run that causes property damage, driving a motor vehicle across a dividing section, giving false information to a police officer and driving without a valid license. Rodman, a National Basketball Association forward with teams including the Detroit Pistons and Chicago Bulls, drove his sport utility vehicle the wrong way on
Interstate 5 in Santa Ana early on July 20, prosecutors said. The driver of a sedan going the correct way swerved to avoid a head-on collision with Rodman’s SUV and slammed into a concrete wall along the carpool lane, prosecutors said. Meyer said the crash was documented as a non-injury collision. The driver of the sedan called 911 and California Highway Patrol officers responded. When they arrived, Rodman had driven away, prosecutors said. Investigators determined Rodman was the SUV driver but when they eventually spoke to him, he gave false information about the incident, prosecutors said. The hit-and-run charge was later discharged after the court accepted a civil compromise between Rodman and the victim, prosecutors
said. Rodman pleaded guilty to the remaining three misdemeanors on Monday afternoon in an Orange County Court. The district attorney’s office said Rodman was ordered to pay restitution as part of his sentence, but Meyer said the restitution had already been deemed completed. Rodman, nicknamed “The Worm” during his playing career, is considered one of the best defensive players and rebounders in NBA history. He won five league championships with Detroit and Chicago and is a member of basketball’s Hall of Fame. He was convicted at least twice of driving under the influence, in 2000 and 2004, according to media reports at the time. (rtr)

Appeals court to hear arguments on Trump’s travel ban
SAN FRANCISCO - The U.S. Justice Department will face off with opponents in a federal appeals court on Tuesday over the fate of President Donald Trump’s temporary travel ban on people from seven Muslim-majority countries, his most controversial act since taking office last month.
Last Friday, U.S. District Judge James Robart suspended Trump’s ban, opening a window for people from the seven affected countries to enter the country. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco will hear arguments over whether to restore the ban from Justice Department lawyers and opposing attorneys for the states of Minnesota and Washington at 3 p.m. PST (2300 GMT). In a tweet on Monday night, Trump said: “The threat from radical Islamic terrorism is very real, just look at what is happening in Europe and the Middle-East. Courts must act fast!” Trump has said the travel measures are designed to protect the country against the threat of terrorism. He has derided Robart, appointed by Republican President
George W. Bush, as a “so-called judge.” In a brief filed on Monday, the Justice Department said the suspension of Trump’s order was too broad and “at most” should be limited to people who were already granted entry to the country and were temporarily abroad, or to those who want to leave and return to the United States. Opponents say the 90-day ban barring entry for citizens from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen and imposing a 120-day halt to all refugees, is illegal. The state of Washington argues it has suffered harm, saying some students and faculty at state universities had been stranded overseas because of the ban. The Republican president’s Jan. 27 executive order sparked protests and chaos at U.S. and overseas airports in the weekend that followed. All the people who had carried out fatal attacks inspired by Islamist militancy in the United States since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks had been U.S. citizens or legal residents, the New America think tank said. LONDON - British lawmakers on Monday rejected the first set of proposed amendments to legislation that would give Prime Minister Theresa May the right to notify the European Union of Britain’s intention to leave the bloc. During seven hours of debate, lawmakers voted against a series of attempts by pro-EU lawmakers to attach extra conditions to May’s plan to begin divorce talks by March 31. Monday’s votes were on the issues of parliamentary scrutiny of the withdrawal process and the involvement of Britain’s devolved administrations. Further votes, on which the government could face greater opposition, are due to take place on Tuesday and Wednesday. Earlier on Monday, May warned lawmakers not to obstruct the will of the British people with amendments to her Brexit legislation, saying she wanted to get on with divorce talks with the EU.
“Our European partners now want to get on with the negotiations, so do I, and so does this house,” May told parliament before the debate began. “The message is clear to all, this house has spoken and now is not the time to obstruct the democratically expressed wishes of the British people. It is time to get on with leaving the European Union.” May has said she expects to win approval from lawmakers in time to stick to her end of the March deadline for triggering Britain’s exit from the EU. On Tuesday lawmakers will continue their scrutiny of the legislation, debating amendments on the final terms of Britain’s withdrawal from the EU as well as those calling for the publication of assessments on the impact of Brexit. AMBON - The Indonesian province of Maluku is ready to become the nations fish production center, as the province constitutes 30 percent of the national fishery output, according to Deputy Governor Zeth Sahuburua. While opening National Press Day and Maluku Expo 2017 here on Monday, Sahuburua declared that the province was ready to become the center for fish production in the country. He stated that the national fish production is nine million tons per year, and 30 percent, or around three million tons, come from Maluku from the waters of Banda, Seram, and Arafura seas.

U.S. Chamber of Commerce warns against tearing up NAFTA trade deal
OTTAWA - Any move to tear up the North American Free Trade Agreement would devastate the economies of members Canada, Mexico and the United States, the head of an influential U.S. business group said on Monday. U.S. President Donald Trump, who says NAFTA has been a disaster for American workers, wants to renegotiate the deal and says he is prepared to walk away if he does not get the changes he wants. Thomas Donohue, president and chief executive officer of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, said Canada and Mexico were America’s two top export markets. “Withdrawing from NAFTA would be devastating for the workers, businesses, and economies of our countries,” he told a business audience in the Canadian capital Ottawa. “Beneath all the debates, arguments, and attention-grabbing headlines, I think our leaders across the board understand this,” said Donohue, who was due to meet Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau later in the day. Canada and Mexico both send the bulk of their exports to the United States and would suffer badly if NAFTA were ripped up. Since Trump won the election, senior Canadian officials have stressed to their U.S. counterparts how closely linked the two economies are. Trudeau also is fond of noting that 9 million U.S. jobs rely on exports to Canada, a point that Donohue repeated. “First, let’s do no harm. Let’s preserve, protect, and advance the robust trade that supports both of our economies and millions of our workers,” he said. Donohue, who did not criticize Trump, said it was crucial for the United States to keep NAFTA as a single agreement rather than negotiating bilateral deals with Canada and Mexico. “To address areas open for modernization or improvement, we would insist on doing it in a way that doesn’t disrupt the $1.3 trillion worth of trade that depends on NAFTA,” he said. Perrin Beatty, who heads the Canadian chamber of commerce, noted that Trump had promised to boost employment. “You don’t create jobs by dismantling a relationship that works well,” he told reporters after the speech.(rtr)

German industry output posts steepest monthly fall since Jan 2009
BERLIN - Weaker output in manufacturing and construction drove the biggest monthly drop in German industrial production in nearly eight years in December, dashing prospects for robust growth in the final quarter of 2016. The surprisingly feeble figures, published by the Economy Ministry in Berlin on Tuesday, were put down to special factors. They also came after industrial orders posted their strongest rise in around 2-1/2 years in December, pointing to a rebound in manufacturing at the start of the year. Industrial output fell by 3.0 percent on the month, Tuesday’s data showed. This was weaker than any prediction in a Reuters poll and far below the consensus forecast for a rise of 0.3 percent. It was the steepest drop since January 2009. “Even though it looks dramatic, today’s December drop should be taken with a pinch of salt,” ING economist Carsten Brzeski said, adding that special factors such as the unusually cold winter temperatures and an extraordinary Christmas effect were probably the
main reasons for the sharp drop in December. The fall was mainly caused by a 3.4 percent drop in manufacturing output, with production of capital goods especially weak, and a 1.7 percent decrease in construction, the data showed. The November reading was revised up to a rise of 0.5 percent from a previously reported rise of 0.4 percent, helping quarterly output to decline by just -0.1 percent. The Economy Ministry said the outlook was looking better. “Orders in manufacturing and construction and also sentiment indicators in these sectors are signalling a revival of output growth in coming months,” the ministry said. Commerzbank economist Ralph Solveen agreed, saying he expected industrial production to rebound strongly in January.
But ING’s Brzeski gave a more cautious outlook, hinting to political risks such as the unknown outcome of negotiations following Britain’s decision to leave the European Union and a possibly protectionist U.S. trade agenda under Donald Trump. “Uncertainty in and about two of Germany’s most important trading partners, the U.S. and the UK, should put a cap on any upward potential,” he said. Higher demand at home and abroad for goods needed in production drove the biggest monthly increase in German industrial orders since July 2014, pointing to a strong first quarter of 2017. The German economy grew by 1.9 percent in 2016, the strongest rate in half a decade, helped by soaring private consumption, increased state spending on refugees and higher construction investment. For this year, the government expects weaker growth of 1.4 percent due to fewer work days and weaker exports.(rtr)

While spending your holidays in Bali, have you ever taste the sticky jaja lukis cake? This kind of cake is not ‘painted’ or ‘drawn’ as the name suggests (lukis in Indonesian means ‘painting or drawing’). However, it is a Balinese cake that tastes sticky, sweet and slightly chewy. It has the shape of small triangle and greenish white color. This cake is classified into consumer-friendly because the ingredients and coloring substance used are from organic herbs. It is made without dyes, sweeteners or preservatives. Similarly, the serving is topped with grated coconut and palm sugar. It will taste better when enjoyed while drinking coffee or tea. Indeed, it is not easy to get this kind of cake. Other than difficult to
get the ingredients, the preparation is also quite complicated. However, stalls at villages, traditional market, pastry shops and some supermarkets have sold it. However, at bakeries and supermarkets this cake has been packed neatly using plastic container. On the contrary, food stalls still serve it manually so that it remains really fresh. Jaja lukis is made from ingredient like sticky rice. Other ingredients include shredded coconut, salt and palm sugar. The preparation takes a long time. At first, the sticky rice is soaked for about 15 minutes. Prepare the extract water of dracaena leaves. This leaf is used to make the cake taste savory as well as to get natural green color. Furthermore, it is drained and
then filled with salt. After that, it is wrapped in green and clean banana leaf with tablespoon batter for each wrapper. Do not forget to wrap it tightly to get sticky result. Then, boil it for two hours (as boiling rice bag). Take out and drain. To ensure whether the sticky rice has been cooked or not, check by piercing using a pin. To utilize Japanese cave for tourist attraction

SEMARAPURA - Condition of Japanese cave in Banjarangkan subdistrict gets attention from the Regent of Klungkung, I Nyoman Suwirta. On Monday (Feb. 6), accompanied by Deputy Regent Made Kasta, Regent Suwirta came down along the Japanese cave to explore the existing potential and prepare the arrangement plan of Japanese cave as a tourist attraction in Banjarangkan subdistrict. Regent Suwirta and the entourage of district government made a visit to the Japanese cave. They were received by local community leaders consisting of temple priests, headman, chief of customary village and chief of subak organization. In the meantime, the Bali Institute for Preservation of Cultural Heritage represented by Wayan Muliarsa was meant to check the condition of the Japanese cave heritage. To note, the cave was made by Japanese soldiers in 1941 to 1942. The cave was created for the protection of Japanese army in an attempt to defend themselves from the attack of allied forces during the World War II. The cave has totally 16 holes with the depth of reaching 14 meters linked by a corridor extending from the north to the south. Interestingly, all this time the government of Klungkung has not dared to make arrangement to the Japanese Cave because it has been included into cultural heritage by the Heritage Preser-
vation Agency for Bali, NTB and NTT region. However, Wayan Muliarsa, as the representative of the Bali Institute for Preservation and Cultural Heritage said that based on Law No.11/2010 the management of cultural heritage is participatory. In other words, the management of cultural heritage involves the participation of stakeholders consisting of society, academicians, NGOs, private sector and local government. “I really appreciate to the measure of district government in managing the Japanese cave. Local government both provincial and district level play an important role, not only in the protection and development but also in the utilization of the cultural heritage for the benefit of society,” said Wayan Muliarsa. He also added that local government will involve geological agency in developing and utilizing the Japanese cave heritage. The price is possible when getting a quota from PLN or the state for renewable energy. “Meanwhile, PLN sells to community for only USD 0.09, so that it will need much subsidy when sold for USD 0.15. Now, let’s talk about condition overseas. In Malaysia, the state pays as much as USD 0.30 for renewable energy, while the tapping fee is USD 30. So, companies are interested in such condition. They get from tapping fee and from the sale of electricity though the electricity is cheap,” he said. According to Pastika, the waste accumulated is planned to be used to produce fertilizer and paving block. In the meantime, the calculation of levy rates of waste management or sanitation has been made based on comprehensive

formulation. “Nevertheless, in the future the waste or sanitation management matters must be resolved in a comprehensive manner,” he added. Related to suggestions for serious enforcement of sanctions, Pastika admitted that the sanctions have already been set forth in the previous regulation. It has also been put back in the draft of this regulation. “This sanction has been implemented, but remains to have many shortcomings. Hopefully, the parliament could give the support to supervise the implementation,” he said. Before set into regional bylaw, said Pastika, the regional bylaw draft on public service levies must be disseminated to the public beforehand. Israel legalizes settler homes on private Palestinian land
JERUSALEM - Israel passed a law on Monday retroactively legalizing about 4,000 settler homes built on privately owned Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank, a measure that has drawn international concern. The legislation has been condemned by Palestinians as a blow to their hopes of statehood. But its passage may only be largely symbolic as it contravenes Israeli Supreme Court rulings on property rights. Israel’s attorney-general has said it is unconstitutional and that he will not defend it at the Supreme Court. Though the legislation, passed by a vote of 60 to 52, was backed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition, it has raised tensions in the government. A White House official said that, given the new law is expected to face challenges in Israeli courts, the

CALGARY - Parks Canada has reintroduced a herd of plains bison to the country’s oldest national park in Banff, Alberta, officials said on Monday, more than 130 years after the iconic North American animal last grazed the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rockies. The conservation team moved 16 bison from a protected herd in central Alberta into an enclosed pasture in Banff National Park in the west of the province last week. The herd will stay under observation in the remote Panther Valley until summer 2018, when the animals will be released into the full 1,189-square-km (460-squaremile) reintroduction zone in the park’s eastern valleys. Parks Canada said bison were once dominant grazers and that bringing them back would restore their missing role in Banff’s ecosystem. “This would be one of only four plains bison herds in North America that would be fully interacting with their predators and shaping the ecosystem as they did over a hundred years ago,” said Kasper Heuer, the bison reintroduction project manager. Those predators will include wolves and bears native to the park. Ten pregnant female bison and six young bulls were disease tested
and radio collared before being herded into five shipping containers and driven 400 km (250 miles) cross Alberta by truck. The conservation team taped rubber hoses to their horns to prevent the animals injuring each other while in transit. Since the Panther Valley is not accessible by road, officials attached the shipping containers by long line to a helicopter and flew them in one at a time for the last 25 km (16 miles). Vast bison herds of up to 30 million animals once migrated freely across North America. The animal was nearly hunted to extinction, and rangers estimate bison have not grazed in Banff National Park since before it was established in 1885. Bison have great spiritual meaning for North America’s aboriginal groups, having once provided an important source of food, clothing and shelter. The reintroduction also coincides with the 150th anniversary of Canada’s 1867 confederation into a federal union. “This is a historic moment and a perfect way to mark Canada’s 150,” Environment and Climate Change Minister Catherine McKenna said in a statement. “Not only are bison a keystone species and an icon of Canada’s history, they are an integral part of the lives of indigenous peoples.” (rtr)

Fighting fake news isn’t just up to Facebook and Google
NEW YORK — The fight against fake news is not just being waged by Google, Facebook and big media companies.
They are joined in the battle by academics and data scientists who started work on the subject years before bogus news stories were suspected of helping sway the 2016 presidential election. Their work has yielded tools that help track how “alternative facts” spread, and others that let you identify fake stories or block them altogether. Some of these are still baby steps, but they’re a key, if largely unsung, part of the effort to tamp down the spread of fake stories. And the researchers were there first. For Giovanni Luca Ciampaglia, a research scientist at Indiana University, the phenomenon first caught his eye during the Ebola crisis in 2014. “We started seeing a lot of content that was spreading, completely fabricated claims about importations of Ebola, (such as) entire towns in Texas being under quarantine,” he says. “What caught our attention was that these claims were created using names of publications that sounded like newspapers. And they were getting a lot of traction on social media.” So he helped create a tool tracking how unsubstantiated claims spread online. DECIPHERING TWITTER RUMORS
Tanushree Mitra, a doctoral student at the Georgia Institute of Technology, began a project three years ago to see how misinformation and fake news spread through Twitter. At the time, she says, “companies like Facebook and Twitter were not paying much attention.” What attracted her to the project was the prevalence of fake news that spread online following natural disasters such as Superstorm Sandy in 2012. When she saw that people were sharing a lot of incorrect or misleading information about the events, Mitra decided to track both big stories and smaller rumors with the goal of creating an app that could help ordinary people sort fact from fiction so they can make decisions that could be crucial to their wellbeing. Mitra and her fellow researchers scanned 66 million tweets linked to nearly 1,400 real-world events to identify words and phrases linked to perceived levels of credibility. Looking at tweets surrounding news events in 2014 and 2015 — including the Ebola crisis, the Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris and the death of Eric Garner in a confrontation of police officers in New York City — they asked people to judge tweets based on how credible they thought the posts were. Words such as “eager,” ‘’terrific” and “undeniable” were linked to more credible posts, while words such as “ha,” ‘’grins” and “suspects” were the opposite. A computer matched the humans’ opinions 68 percent of the time. The next step, an app, could help people rate the credibility of tweets and other social media posts.
TRACKING HOAXES
A group of researchers at Indiana University have created an online tool called Hoaxy that seeks to visualize “the spread of claims and related fact checking online.” Although it’s still a work in progress, Hoaxy can trace the origin of, for instance, the false claim that millions of votes in the 2016 presidential election were cast by “illegal aliens.” Type in your search terms and Hoaxy will report back with stories that spread the claims, as well as fact-checking articles that debunked it. In this instance, the claim goes back to a November article from Infowars.com that was shared 17,961 times on Twitter and 52,200 times on Facebook, according to Hoaxy. The site only tracks actual links people shared, so it misses anything that’s paraphrased or posted without a link. A data visualization tool shows the intertwined web of Twitter users who spread both the claims and the fact checks, and how they are connected to one another. The researchers focused on Twitter because the service makes more data available to the public, which makes it easier to use in datatracking tools than Facebook. LEAD A HORSE TO WATER
Tools like Hoaxy or rumor-identification apps are only helpful if people use them. The same goes for another approach — using a web browser plug-in to identify or block fake-news stories. For instance, the Chrome extension “Fake News Alert,” created last year, says it will tell you when you are visiting a site “known for spreading fake news.” But there are a few drawbacks. Many people aren’t willing to go to the trouble of adding new extensions to their browser. And such extensions only work on the desktop version of Chrome, not its mobile counterpart. “Fake News Alert” also uses a widely circulated but oftcriticized list of fake and misleading news sites assembled by a Merrimack College professor. The list casts a very broad net and includes some established, but highly partisan sites such as the right-wing Breitbart News and the left-wing Occupy Democrats. A final obstacle: While fake news has been in the real news a lot, many people simply aren’t that aware of it. “A lot of consumers are not savvy about it,” says Larry Chiagouris, a marketing professor at Pace University who follows the fake news phenomenon. “And of those that are — and it’s a small number— not a lot of them add plug-ins to browsers.” EDUCATE THE PEOPLE

Honda, Hitachi Automotive to develop, make electric vehicles
TOKYO — Japanese automaker Honda Motor Co. has signed a deal with Hitachi Automotive Systems to jointly develop, make and sell motors for electric vehicles, as the industry adapts to concerns over global warming and the environment.
The companies announced the agreement Tuesday. Honda, which also makes its own electric motors, has a fuel-cell vehicle and hybrids in its lineup. It’s planning an electric vehicle for sale later this year, mostly abroad.
The wholly owned subsidiary of Tokyo-based Hitachi has supplied electric motors to other automakers in the past, including General Motors Co. of the U.S. and Nissan Motor Co., which makes the Leaf electric car. The deal, signed last week, is
part of a big push by Honda into electric cars. The joint venture, which has yet to be named, will be 51 percent owned by Hitachi and will have manufacturing and sales operations in the U.S. and China, the companies said.
Global environmental regulations are expected to grow stricter, pushing up demand for electric vehicles, they said. The joint venture, capitalized at 5 billion yen ($45 million), will be based in Hitachinaka city, north of Tokyo. (ap)

MANGUPURA - Complaints of community related to traffic changes in Kuta area resulting in congestion will be immediately followed up. The government of Badung through the Transportation Agency will evaluate related to the traffic changes. Acting Head of the Badung Transportation Agency, Wayan Weda Dharmaja, when making site inspection on Sunday (Feb. 5) said the traffic changes at the tourist village is in principle to overcome the bottlenecks frequently occurred in the region. “This change is just begun a few days ago, so it takes time to conduct a study and evaluation,” he said. Assessment and evaluation, said Weda Dharmaja, are meant to parse the intersections that may hamper the traffic as a result of the changes in the direction of traffic. “Studies and evaluation need to be made for the four-way intersection at Temacun hamlet,” he said. He revealed that the change in direction of traffic in Kuta area aims to reduce and overcome the congestion complained all this time by Kuta
residents and travelers. “So, it is not intended to move congestion to other road sections,” he said. He said the site inspection on the changes in the direction of traffic in Kuta area is meant to determine the points of intersection that cause traffic congestions after the direction has been changed. “To change back to the previous direction of traffic cannot be implemented this time considering that the incoming vehicle traffic to Kuta is not balanced with the vehicles coming out of Kuta area,” he explained. “The waste is quite a lot. Unfortunately, this wonderful beach becomes dirty and nasty,” complained a domestic traveler named Ruditya from Jakarta when walking down the Kedonganan Beach on Sunday (Feb. 5). Plastic waste is not only strewn along the coastline due to the waves crashing ashore. Assorted plastic waste, bottles of liquor to organic waste can also be seen to the middle of the beach. “Probably, the rain over the past few days has caused flooding in rivers so that they bring in these various waste into the sea through the mouth of the river,” he said. This middle-aged man who claimed to regularly travel to Bali for business affairs also revealed that the waste going to the sea due to bad behavior of people who used to throw garbage into the river. Invasion of marine debris at a number of beach tourist attractions in Badung district was justified by the Head of the Badung Environment and Sanitation Agency (DLHK), Putu Eka Merthawan. He said that February 2017 will become the peak of
extreme weather as predicted by the national weather service (BMKG), so the surge in the volume of waste is inevitable. “It (plastic waste—Ed) had disappeared, but now appears again. Moreover, it stretches to Kedonganan Beach,” he said. According to him, the volume of waste increases so that the DLHK Badung becomes overwhelmed to face the piles of waste that is getting worse, especially on Kedonganan Beach. “It mostly consists of plastic waste whose volume reaches two tons per day. It is like a test case for us because the plastic waste almost appears on all the beaches,” he explained. To overcome the problems, the DLHK fielded about 500 janitors to handle waste on the beaches in Badung. In addition to optimizing the janitors, his agency also equips them with three loaders and 15 trucks. “With the support of heavy equipment, we remain overwhelmed,” he said. In addition, the regular waste also increases by 25 tons per day comprising organic and plastic waste. Normally, total daily waste volume in Badung reaches 248 tons. This also happens due to higher rainfall. So, the total volume of waste in Badung both on the beaches and regular waste reaches 275 tons per day. “Just imagine how tired we are struggling for handling the waste. Thus, we do hope for help from local government so that people, especially the management of cafés, can still sell maximally,” he hoped. Mertha added that such condition almost occurred across the coastal landscapes around the cafés at Kedonganan. The coastline at Kedonganan totally extends along 1,000 meters. If visitors are from Kuta Beach, they must return to Jalan Ciung Wanara. Thus, now visitors only have one access. “Nowadays, there have been many complaints received from the community, not only related to the art market. Magistrate orders French expresident Sarkozy to stand trial
PARIS - A magistrate has ordered former French president Nicolas Sarkozy to stand trial over irregularities in the funding of his failed 2012 re-election bid, a judicial source said on Tuesday.The charge against Sarkozy, who led France for five years from 2007, exposes the 62-year old conservative politician to a one-year prison sentence if convicted. Sarkozy’s lawyer Thierry Herzog described the trial order as “inane” and said he would lodge an appeal against it. One of two magistrates handling the case ordered the trial on the charge that Sarkozy spent way more than he was entitled to, despite warnings
from his accountants. The source, who was speaking on condition of anonymity as is often the case in France when initial announcements of trials are made, said 13 others would also face trial over the affair. Lawyer Herzog highlighted the fact that
only one of the two magistrates in charge of the case signed the trial order. “The clear disagreement between the two magistrates in charge of the matter is such a rare event that it is worth underlining, as it illustrates the inanity of the decision,” he said in a statement. The trial order comes at a time when French politicians face growing scrutiny over their personal and political finances in the build-up to this year’s presidential election in April
and May. Sarkozy’s conservative predecessor Jacques Chirac was convicted in 2011, after his retirement, of misusing public funds to keep political allies in phantom jobs. That was the first conviction of a French head of state since Nazi collaborator Marshal Philippe Petain in 1945. Conservative Francois Fillon, who beat rivals including Sarkozy to become the centreright’s candidate in this year’s race, has been engulfed by a scandal over payments of public
funds to his wife and children.
