Ay Caramba! ‘The Simpsons’ to break record as longest-running U.S. show
LOS ANGELES - The Simpsons have traveled the world, saved Springfield from annihilation and even stepped into virtual reality, but the beloved animated family is entering new ground as it heads toward a record-breaking 30th season. “The Simpsons” has been renewed for two more seasons running until 2019, Twenty-First Century Fox Inc’s Fox Broadcasting said on Friday, meaning it will break the record for most episodes of any scripted television show in U.S. history. “The Simpsons” is currently in its 28th season, with just over 600 episodes aired. By 2019, it will have outpaced western TV drama “Gun-
smoke,” which concluded after 635 episodes in 1975. “Take that ‘Gunsmoke!’You lost a race you didn’t even know you were running!,” Homer Simpson said in a statement from Fox. Since its 1989 premiere, “The Simpsons” - bumbling patriarch Homer, long-suffering wife Marge, prankster Bart, prodigy Lisa and baby Maggie - have become globally
recognized figures. The show, which has won 32 Emmy awards and was nominated for an Oscar in the animated short category in 2012, often playfully and poignantly satirizes American culture. Homer’s catchphrase “D’oh” and Bart’s “Ay Caramba” are part of the zeitgeist and the fictional family from Springfield even have a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. The show is syndicated in more than 100 countries and is already the longest-running sitcom and primetime scripted series in U.S. history. (rtr)

The first ethnic Chinese politician to lead this sprawling city of 10 million, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama is standing for re-election in February, competing with two Muslims for the job. The governorship of the capital is a powerful position and it was a stepping stone for Joko Widodo to the presidency of the country two years ago. At a news conference held in the early hours of Saturday, Widodo called for calm and took a swipe at politicians - whom he didn’t name - for whipping up die-hard demonstrators after most had already gone home. “ ... we deplore the incident after the Isha prayers, when should have already disbanded but became violent. And, we see this was steered by political actors who were exploiting the situation,” Widodo said. Police fired tear gas and water cannon to subdue a restive crowd that police said swelled to about 150,000 after Friday prayers as they congregated around the presidential palace. Some protesters threw rocks at the police, two vehicles were torched and a fire broke out near the city’s National Monument, but by the evening the demonstration was fizzling out. However, in a northern neighbourhood of the city there was a late-night clash between police and a few dozen protesters, and social media reports showed a convenience store being looted. And hundreds camped out until around 4 a.m. beside the parliament building to demand Purnama be charged for
blasphemy. A police spokesman said one person died and 12 were hurt. Local media said about 23 people were arrested, most of them in the north, where overnight police guarded shopping and residential areas that are home to predominantly nonMuslims. About a dozen Muslim groups have accused Purnama of insulting Islam after he jokingly said his opponents had used a verse from the Koran to deceive voters. The verse implies that Muslims should not choose non-Muslims as leaders. Chanting “God is greatest”, many in Friday’s protest waved placards calling for Purnama, popularly known as Ahok, to be jailed for blasphemy. A white banner hung at an overpass was painted with red letters that read “Hang Ahok here”. Police are investigating the case against Purnama, who has apologised for his remarks, insisting he was not criticising the Koranic verse but those who used it to attack him. Purnama has a reputation as a no-nonsense reformer with little patience for the corruption widely blamed for the chaos and dilapidated infrastructure of an overcrowded city. Continued to page 6

Balinese-speaking day and fate of Balinese language teachers
C U R R E N T LY the Balinesespeaking day is intensified in Denpasar and Badung. Probably this will be followed by other districts in Bali. In the city of Denpasar, it is done every Wednesday, full moon and new moon. This program is positive
to support smart city as long as it is followed by commitment of the municipal government to recruit Balinese language teachers. Balinese-speaking day program has actually been done earlier in the environment of the PGRI schools in Denpasar on Fridays while English on Saturdays. Chairman of the YPLP PGRI Denpasar, I Nengah Madiadnyana, said the program has been running since the
past 6-8 years. Now, it just needs to be strengthened and adjusted to the program of the Denpasar municipality. In the meantime, Principal of the SMAN 3 Denpasar high school, I Ketut Suyastra, reminded that the Balinese-speaking day program on Wednesday, full moon and new moon should not be imposed on all fronts, including at schools must be done in stages. He worried, when
required, it may cause the students hating Balinese language not to go to school. At schools, this is adequately applied to programs outside school hours, but if it is required to be applied in classroom learning, he is sure that it can cause problems. Classroom learning activities for English and Indonesian language are still being done by Indonesian and English, may not be replaced

Some observers said that Balinese-speaking day should be preceded by paying attention to the suffering fate of Balinese language teachers. In addition to competing against other teachers in obtaining Balinese language teaching hours, they have not been recruited as civil servant. Every promotion of civil servant prospect for teachers, for instance, it does not touch the Balinese language teachers. In fact, they are spearheading for the preservation and transfer of science on Balinese literature. A Balinese cultural observer, Dr. Nengah Arnawa, keeps on inflam-
ing so that the government of Bali, district government and municipal government take a breakthrough to recruit Balinese language teachers in their respective region. It is necessary because in the recruitment of civil servant, Balinese language teacher Bali is virtually never included. Since Balinese language is very specific, Nengah Arnawa also belonging to the drafting team of Indonesian language book for Curriculum 2013 said that it should become the obligation for governments in the region either in the form of contract teachers or local employees financed through regional budget. He said that all this time the teaching of Balinese language, especially at elementary school, is no man’s land. It is taught by teachers of Hinduism. In the meantime, in the rule of certification the excess of teaching hours for Hinduism teachers should not be filled with Balinese language. Thus, as long as there is no recruitment he believed that Balinese language at elementary school will be unfilled.
If handed over to the classroom teachers, he said, it is impossible as it has different method. Rector of the PGRI Bali Teachers’ Training College, Dr. I Made Suarta, also defended desperately the fate of Balinese language teachers that is seemingly required by the government. Even though currently there is recruitment of Balinese language companion distributed to every village, it does not answer the real challenge. He also revealed that the key to learn Balinese culture lies in the mastery of Balinese literature. All kinds of knowledge on Balinese aspects can be expressed through Balinese literature. So, he would like to create the professionalism of Balinese language teacher that should be taught by teachers in the study. In reality, the subject of Balinese language and ballet is taught by a teacher having expertise in it. He wanted that every district recruits Balinese language teacher. There is a good opportunity in Badung that will recruit 300 Balinese language teachers through contract teachers. He

Balinese-speaking day in Badung looks awkward and hesitant
ASIDE from the municipal government of Denpasar, the use of Balinese language in certain occasion is also carried out in Badung. Balinese-speaking day (dina mabasa Bali) is applied every Friday and every full moon. Moreover, Balinese language is also used in the plenary session at the Badung House of Representatives. Various dialects of Balinese emerge in the plenary session of the ranks of the people’s representatives of Badung. Understandably the session previously using the national language (Indonesian) is now actually using Balinese language.
Thus, it sounds like a meeting in village hall looking awkward and hesitant. Chairman of the commissions presented their work with members by using Balinese language. Their speech looked still a slightly awk-
ward. A number of legislators and staff often smiled while attending the Balinese-speaking session. Chairman of the Badung House of Representatives, I Putu Parwata, said that the use of Balinese language in the session of the Badung parliament is in line with the Balinese-speaking day proclaimed by the regent and deputy regent of Badung. “Speaking Balinese is scheduled on Fridays and every full moon. So, we in the parliament start the Balinese-speaking day,”
he said. Although the atmosphere at the meeting using Balinese language is slightly different and less flexible, without hesitancy this PDI-P politician of Badung has appealed to use Balinese language every meeting on Friday and full moon. “Once or twice may be somewhat different, later it will become accustomed. Moreover, the purpose is very positive, lest we all cannot speak Balinese. Balinese language is our mother tongue. So, everyone shall know the native language,” he said. The use of Balinese language in Badung has been confirmed by the issuance of the Badung Regent Regulation No. 24/2016 concerning the use of Balinese language in the environment of the government of Badung. This regulation was established in Mangupura on March 4 and entered into force on March 9, 2016 coinciding with the celebration of the Caka New Year 1938. Deputy Regent of Badung, I Ketut Suiasa, said that in the effort to establish the identity and respect for the values of local wisdom, the government of Badung is commit-
ted to cultivating Balinese language at schools and entire ranks of the government of Badung. The regulation mentions that the use of Balinese language is to keep and preserve Balinese language as local language belongs to the cultural wealth of the nation. Thus, it becomes an important factor for the affirmation of regional identity. The use of Balinese language in the government of Badung environment every Friday and full moon related to official meetings / gatherings, oral conversations and direct conversation, organization of government and social events. The use of the Balinese language is excluded in terms of the implementation of assembly at district, provincial and national level involving the elements of inter-provincial and institutions / agencies of central government level and the reading of the letters of public administration and product of legislation. Bali Safari & Marine Park remains tireless in its continuing efforts to encourage children to love and preserve the earth’s natural environment. Most recently, this commitment by the Park was expressed by inviting orphans from the Benih Kasih Orphanage in Bali’s far north to join a daylong celebration dedicated to the love of flora and fauna. “Love our Flora and Fauna Day” was held on Saturday, November 5, 2016, with the Park’s Educational Team preparing a day filled with encounters with the natural environment including some of the wildlife that share this planet with mankind. Among the activities hosted for the visiting children from the Benih Kasih Orphanage was the chance to join a motorized Safari Journey that carried them on slow moving, secure vehicles traveling through three large open compounds that are
the homes to the animals of Africa, India and Indonesia. Later, the kids joined the audiences at a number of animal encounter programs, including the “Predator to Prey” tiger show and the Elephant Educational Show. The Park then shared the concept of recycling via a tour of the jungle “Safari Pool Paper” factory where elephant droppings are turned into useable paper products. The was followed with a lesson that animals need not necessarily be feared as the children shouted in glee when they were set loose in the Park’s Petting Zoo and given the chance to assist in the grooming of a pony. The day of childhood fantasy continued with the children given free access to the wide range of amusement park rides found in the Park’s FunZone. William Santoso, general manager of the Bali Safari & Marine Park, commented on the visit
saying: “’Love of Fauna and Flora Day’ is a day that we are obliged to celebrate each year in order to remind us all of the need to conserve and protect Indonesia’s plant and animal kingdoms. This year, we have taken the opportunity to invite children from a Bali orphanage, embracing them as members of our Park family in the hope they will grow into adults concerned with the natural environment.” National Love of Fauna and Flora Day (Hari Cinta Puspa dan Satwa Nasional) has been celebrated every November 5th since 1992. BANGLI - Farmers at Kayupadi B hamlet, Songan, Kintamani, are forced to sell their crops at low price. This happens because the condition of road infrastructure at their local hamlet has experienced severe damage since recent years. Hamlet Chief of Kayupadi B, Komang Berata, revealed that road damage at local hamlet occurred approximately along five kilometers. Severe damage starts from the border of Pinggan village. He also said that so far there are some roads already hardened with crushed river stone in 2011 but never paved. “Some paved roads cannot be passed well now due to breakage and never gets maintenance,” he explained. Berata said that the damaged road at his village all this time has caused farmers to sell their crops at low price. For example, chili normally sold for IDR 10,000 is now forced to be sold for IDR 9,000-IDR 9,500 per kilogram. Likewise, if local residents behind the hill in need of something, they must be willing to buy at higher price when compared to other places. “For example, fertilizer usually sold in the market for IDR 9,000 per kilogram, at Kayupadi is sold to farmers at IDR 10,000,” he explained. Seeing such condition and on behalf of his residents, he very much hoped that the damaged road at local hamlet could be fixed by the government. By doing so, the road will no longer make farmers lose money. “We hope the road at our village can be repaired,” he added. In the meantime, a legislator of the Bangli House of Representatives from Songan village, Gelgel Wisnawa, also hoped the government to prioritize repair for the road. MANGUPURA - Waste management in the region of Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar and Tabanan (Sarbagita) lately constrained by management problem drew the interest of investor. The investor known as PT Bali Waste Energy has made an approach to the Sarbagita authorities and made a presentation.

To establish this waste plant, his company requires some agreements with the related local government.
He has made communication with Sarbagita government for a site inspection to waste plants in Germany and the Netherlands. “The waste plant will be capable of producing a wide range of energies ranging from electric energy, bio coal, steam, CO2 certification and compost,” he said. In the area of the waste plant will also be established a housing for scavengers where the raw materials are obtained from the waste plant. As is known, the non-optimal management of the regional landfill of Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar, Tabanan (Sarbagita) at Suwung Denpasar happened due to negligence by PT Noei as the operator designated by the Sarbagita government seriously affecting the amount of waste. On that account, the government of Badung seeks to build a medium-sized independent landfill for subdistrict and the smaller scale for village in the amended regional budget 2016 and main regional budget 2017. Cangi Gates, a Unique Heritage of Gianyar Gianyar district has a historic locus in the form of Cangi gates. It is located at Cangi hamlet, Batuan Kaler, Sukawati, Gianyar. From Denpasar, it is about 20 kilometers that can be reached through the Denpasar – Gianyar road section. Having arrived at the baby statue of Sakah village (three-way intersection of Blahbatuh- Sukawati-Mas) passing a small bridge, visitor will find a T-junction where there is a signpost carrying Dusun Cangi (Cangi hamlet) on the right side. After stepping around 300 meters from the main road, visitor will meet a banyan tree with dense leaves in front of a large temple. Cangi Gates, a Unique Heritage of Gianyar_1 Well, it is the Desa Ganggangan Cangi Temple denoting an archaeological site of Cangi Gates. Now, the Desa and Puseh Temple of Cangi becomes a cultural heritage spreading across the area of ??one hectare. This temple is also equipped with a chamber used to store sand stone statues as well as bale agung and bale pegat pavilion. To get to the Cangi Gates, visitors can enter through the west side of the bale agung pavilion. These gates have something to do with the development of Buddhism in Bali as found at Gunung Kawi Temple, Tampaksiring. In front of the gates, there are two old statues of animals estimated to have a very old age. After that, go to the north side in the form of statue shrine. In this building, there are hundreds of archaeological objects in the form of Kacogatan Dangupadhyaya Sudar and dozens of sandstone statues. They are in form of Lord Shiva, Ganesha, the elephant and other animals. Similarly, the building extending to the east is a place to store archaeological objects. Cangi hamlet actually belongs to an old village. In the past, the
village area was a jungle as well as mountainous area in the north end of Sukawati. Majority of local villagers are working in the agricultural and trading sector. It is said that this location was a sanctuary of clergy. As evidence, a number of relics are found in the Cangi area in the form of ancient objects. This temple is supported by residents of four hamlets namely the Cangi, Sakah, Blahtanah, and Dauma. These residents are fully responsible for various development activities and rituals performed once every six months, falling on Buda Cemeng Langkir or four days after Kuningan. Cangi Temple has three levels of ceremony. The smallest scale is called pakoleman, and next six months is held the babangkit offerings. Six months later is held the nyatur ritual. In order to facilitate the organization of ceremony, the customary village is divided into two sub-groups (tempek) adjusted to the number of inhabitants. Chief of Cangi customary village, I Ketut Supat, said that around the 2000s the ancient site was often visited by foreign travelers but today is very rarely visited. Other than historical heritage, Cangi village is also famous for its handicraft, painting and other art products. “Activities of the craftsmen also become a tourist attraction, other than ancient heritages,” said Supat. On that account, added Supat, in the future his apparatus with local leaders will arrange the village into a tourism village. Other than supported by tourist attractions, there has been accommodation like villas at the village. “In the future, we will make a trekking path and biking trails, so that travelers can enjoy cool atmosphere of the countryside and the existing tourist attractions,” concluded Supat. Tens of thousands of South Koreans demonstrated at a rally on Saturday evening in central Seoul demanding that Park resign over the scandal involving an old frend, Choi Soon-sil, who is alleged to have used her closeness to the president to meddle in state affairs. Park’s approval rating has fallen to just 5 percent, the lowest since such polling began in 1988, according to a Gallup Korea survey released on Friday. The Seoul Central District Court said in a statement that it granted a warrant to prosecutors to arrest An Chong-bum, a former senior advisor for Park, who faces charges of abuse of power and attempted extortion. An was already in custody under an emergency detention order. Prosecutors are looking into allegations that An and Choi forced South Korean conglomerates to donate funds to nonprofit foundations. The court said it also issued an arrest warrant for a second former presidential aide, Jeong Ho-seong, who also had already been held in temporary custody. since last month. So far, there are enough people visiting to enjoy the beauty of natural scenery at the Arca valley from the platform. Most of those visitors come to simply take pictures with the background of the valley. A student from Metra Yangapi hamlet recognized that the landscape seen from the bamboo platform is quite beautiful. He also admitted to intentionally come just for taking photographs.
“The scenery is quite exotic,” he said. All this time, the platform is managed by local customary youth club. One of the members, Edi Saputra, said the bamboo platform has the height of approximately five meters. There have been many visitors since it was first introduced a month ago. LAGOS - One of more than 200 schoolgirls abducted by jihadist group Boko Haram from their school in northeast Nigeria’s Chibok in 2014 has been found by soldiers, a Nigerian army spokesman said on Saturday, weeks after the militants released 21 of the girls. Around 270 girls were kidnapped in April 2014 by the Islamist militant group, which has killed 15,000 people and displaced more than two million during a seven-year insurgency aimed at creating an Islamic caliphate in north-east Nigeria. Dozens escaped in the initial melee, but more than 200 remained missing for more than two years. Sani Usman said the girl, Maryam Ali Maiyanga, was discovered by troops who were screening escapees from Boko Haram’s base in the Sambisa forest on Saturday morning in Pulka, Gwoza Local Government Area, in Borno State. “She was discovered to be carrying a
10-month-old son, named Ali. She has been taken to the unit’s medical facility for (a) proper medical check up,” said Usman. Bring Back Our Girls, a group of campaigners with close ties to relatives of those abducted, said “preliminary investigations” showed the girl was number 198 on its register of the kidnapped girls. In a statement, the campaign group said she was from Askira Uba, a district of Borno state, and was abducted along with her twin who is yet to return. Last month, 21 of the girls were released by Boko Haram following talks with the government brokered by the International Red Cross and the Swiss government. The government has vowed to rescue the girls still being held. The first of the schoolgirls to be found was discovered by soldiers on the edge of the Sambisa forest, a former colonial game reserve in Borno state about 100 km (60 miles) from the village of Chibok, in May. KUPANG - Head of the East Nusa Tenggara provincial Agriculture and Plantation Service Yohanes Tay Ruba said the province would continue the program of opening of new rice fields in 2017. “Currently we are conducting rationalization and preparation of the program for the opening of new rice fields to be implemented in 2017,” Yohanes said here on Saturday. He said implementation of the program this year could not be carried out as expected over delay in the disbursement of General Allocation Fund (DAU) from the central government. Until now 1,960 hectares of new rice field had been opened or falling short of the target of 2,709 hectares for this year, he said. Around 224.22 hectares of the new rice fields have been ready for cultivation, he added. “We hope the rest could be carried out with work starting early next year, that farmers could increase their rice production,” he said. Yohanes delay in the implementation of the program was recorded in a number of areas including in the regencies of Kupang, Sumba Timur, and Flores such as regencies of Ende and Manggarai Barat. The regency of Ende was to have Rp11,538,089,786 in the delayed DAU each month from September to December. Kupangs delayed share of the DAU in the same periods was Rp25,466,413,828; and the regency of Sumba Timur was to have Rp11,532,251,253 and the regency of Manggarai Barat was to receive a disbursement of Rp18,071,885,782 each month during the four months period. RENO - Republican Donald Trump was rushed off stage by security agents at a rally in Reno, Nevada, on Saturday night after a false alarm as someone in the crowd shouted “gun” during scuffles with a man who held up a ‘Republicans against Trump’ sign. The incident occurred as Trump and Democratic rival Hillary Clinton crisscrossed the United States a late push to win over undecided voters and make sure supporters turn out enthusiastically on Election Day. Two security agents seized Trump by the shoulders and hustled him backstage as police officers swarmed over a man in the front of the crowd and held him down and searched him before escorting him away with his hands behind his back. Trump, seemingly unruffled, returned to the stage and continued his speech after a short time, saying “Nobody said it was going to be easy for us” and adding “We will never be stopped.” After being released, the man

LONDON - Parliament must accept that Britain’s vote to leave the European Union was legitimate and let the government get on with delivering Brexit, Prime Minister Theresa May said on Sunday. May has said she is confident of overturning a British court ruling that the government needs parliamentary approval to start the process of leaving the EU. The government, which has given little away about its plans for Britain’s future relationship with the EU, has said that having to set out a detailed negotiating strategy to parliament would put it at a disadvantage in talks with the bloc. “While others seek to tie our negotiating hands, the government will get on with the job of delivering the decision of the British people,” May said in a statement ahead of her first trade trip to India on Sunday. “It was MPs (members of parliament) who overwhelmingly decided to put the decision in their hands. The result was clear. It was legitimate. MPs and peers who regret the referendum result need to accept what the people decided.” May will use her first bilateral trade
trip since taking office to try to boost ties with India before Britain leaves the EU and to pave the way for a free trade deal as soon as possible once Brexit is completed. Parliament could in theory block Brexit as most members supported staying in the EU in June’s referendum, although it is unlikely to do so. Despite giving away 10 years to his opponent, the 37-year-old Pacquiao fought with more intensity and energy, and dominated the American in the final rounds to close out an emphatic victory. The judges scored the bout 114113, 118-109 and 118-109 in favour of Pacquiao, the only fighter to hold titles in eight divisions, with the Filipino improving to 59-6-2, while Vargas fell to 27-2. It was a master class taught by the first sitting Senator to win a world boxing championship as Pacquiao temporarily left the ring to win election in the Philippines and serve in office before making a return to what he called his “passion”. However, his goal on Saturday didn’t help Napoli move up the Serie A table in a 1-1 draw at home with Lazio. Napoli has won just two of its past eight matches. But Hamsik, who broke Maradona’s Napoli record of 81 Serie A goals in September, moved a step closer to matching the Argentine’s club record of 115 in all competitions. RENO - Republican Donald Trump was rushed off stage by security agents at a rally in Reno, Nevada, on Saturday night after a false alarm as someone in the crowd shouted “gun” during scuffles with a man who held up a ‘Republicans against Trump’ sign. The incident occurred as Trump and Democratic rival Hillary Clinton crisscrossed the United States a late push to win over undecided voters and make sure supporters turn out enthusiastically on Election Day. Two security agents seized Trump by the shoulders and hustled him backstage as police officers swarmed over a man in the front of the crowd and held him down and searched him before escorting him away with his hands behind his back. Trump, seemingly unruffled, returned to the stage and continued his speech after a short time, saying “Nobody said it was going to be easy for us” and adding “We will never be stopped.” After being released, the man

LONDON - Parliament must accept that Britain’s vote to leave the European Union was legitimate and let the government get on with delivering Brexit, Prime Minister Theresa May said on Sunday. May has said she is confident of overturning a British court ruling that the government needs parliamentary approval to start the process of leaving the EU. The government, which has given little away about its plans for Britain’s future relationship with the EU, has said that having to set out a detailed negotiating strategy to parliament would put it at a disadvantage in talks with the bloc. “While others seek to tie our negotiating hands, the government will get on with the job of delivering the decision of the British people,” May said in a statement ahead of her first trade trip to India on Sunday. “It was MPs (members of parliament) who overwhelmingly decided to put the decision in their hands. The result was clear. It was legitimate. MPs and peers who regret the referendum result need to accept what the people decided.” May will use her first bilateral trade

KUPANG - Head of the East Nusa Tenggara provincial Agriculture and Plantation Service Yohanes Tay Ruba said the province would continue the program of opening of new rice fields in 2017. “Currently we are conducting rationalization and preparation of the program for the opening of new rice fields to be implemented in 2017,” Yohanes said here on Saturday. He said implementation of the program this year could not be carried out as expected over delay in the disbursement of General Allocation Fund (DAU) from the central government. Until now 1,960 hectares of new rice field had been opened or falling short of the target of 2,709 hectares for this year, he said. Around 224.22 hectares of the new rice fields have been ready for cultivation, he added. “We hope the rest could be carried out with work starting early next year, that farmers could increase their rice production,” he said. Yohanes delay in the implementation of the program was recorded in a number of areas including in the regencies of Kupang, Sumba Timur, and Flores such as regencies of Ende and Manggarai Barat. The regency of Ende was to have Rp11,538,089,786 in the delayed DAU each month from September to December. Kupangs delayed share of the DAU in the same periods was Rp25,466,413,828; and the regency of Sumba Timur was to have Rp11,532,251,253 and the regency of Manggarai Barat was to receive a disbursement of Rp18,071,885,782 each month during the four months period. After stepping around 300 meters from the main road, visitor will meet a banyan tree with dense leaves in front of a large temple. Cangi Gates, a Unique Heritage of Gianyar_1 Well, it is the Desa Ganggangan Cangi Temple denoting an archaeological site of Cangi Gates. Now, the Desa and Puseh Temple of Cangi becomes a cultural heritage spreading across the area of ??one hectare. This temple is also equipped with a chamber used to store sand stone statues as well as bale agung and bale pegat pavilion. To get to the Cangi Gates, visitors can enter through the west side of the bale agung pavilion. These gates have something to do with the development of Buddhism in Bali as found at Gunung Kawi Temple, Tampaksiring. In front of the gates, there are two old statues of animals estimated to have a very old age. After that, go to the north side in the form of statue shrine. In this building, there are hundreds of archaeological objects in the form of Kacogatan Dangupadhyaya Sudar and dozens of sandstone statues. They are in form of Lord Shiva, Ganesha, the elephant and other animals. Similarly, the building extending to the east is a place to store archaeological objects. Cangi hamlet actually belongs to an old village. In the past, the
village area was a jungle as well as mountainous area in the north end of Sukawati. Majority of local villagers are working in the agricultural and trading sector. It is said that this location was a sanctuary of clergy. As evidence, a number of relics are found in the Cangi area in the form of ancient objects. This temple is supported by residents of four hamlets namely the Cangi, Sakah, Blahtanah, and Dauma. These residents are fully responsible for various development activities and rituals performed once every six months, falling on Buda Cemeng Langkir or four days after Kuningan. Cangi Temple has three levels of ceremony. The smallest scale is called pakoleman, and next six months is held the babangkit offerings. Six months later is held the nyatur ritual. In order to facilitate the organization of ceremony, the customary village is divided into two sub-groups (tempek) adjusted to the number of inhabitants. Chief of Cangi customary village, I Ketut Supat, said that around the 2000s the ancient site was often visited by foreign travelers but today is very rarely visited. Other than historical heritage, Cangi village is also famous for its handicraft, painting and other art products. “Activities of the craftsmen also become a tourist attraction, other than ancient heritages,” said Supat. On that account, added Supat, in the future his apparatus with local leaders will arrange the village into a tourism village. Other than supported by tourist attractions, there has been accommodation like villas at the village. “In the future, we will make a trekking path and biking trails, so that travelers can enjoy cool atmosphere of the countryside and the existing tourist attractions,” concluded Supat. LAGOS - One of more than 200 schoolgirls abducted by jihadist group Boko Haram from their school in northeast Nigeria’s Chibok in 2014 has been found by soldiers, a Nigerian army spokesman said on Saturday, weeks after the militants released 21 of the girls. Around 270 girls were kidnapped in April 2014 by the Islamist militant group, which has killed 15,000 people and displaced more than two million during a seven-year insurgency aimed at creating an Islamic caliphate in north-east Nigeria. Dozens escaped in the initial melee, but more than 200 remained missing for more than two years. Sani Usman said the girl, Maryam Ali Maiyanga, was discovered by troops who were screening escapees from Boko Haram’s base in the Sambisa forest on Saturday morning in Pulka, Gwoza Local Government Area, in Borno State. “She was discovered to be carrying a

BANGLI - Farmers at Kayupadi B hamlet, Songan, Kintamani, are forced to sell their crops at low price. This happens because the condition of road infrastructure at their local hamlet has experienced severe damage since recent years. Hamlet Chief of Kayupadi B, Komang Berata, revealed that road damage at local hamlet occurred approximately along five kilometers. Severe damage starts from the border of Pinggan village. He also said that so far there are some roads already hardened with crushed river stone in 2011 but never paved. “Some paved roads cannot be passed well now due to breakage and never gets maintenance,” he explained. Berata said that the damaged road at his village all this time has caused farmers to sell their crops at low price. For example, chili normally sold for IDR 10,000 is now forced to be sold for IDR 9,000-IDR 9,500 per kilogram. Likewise, if local residents behind the hill in need of something, they must be willing to buy at higher price when compared to other places. “For example, fertilizer usually sold in the market for IDR 9,000 per kilogram, at Kayupadi is sold to farmers at IDR 10,000,” he explained. Seeing such condition and on behalf of his residents, he very much hoped that the damaged road at local hamlet could be fixed by the government. By doing so, the road will no longer make farmers lose money. “We hope the road at our village can be repaired,” he added. In the meantime, a legislator of the Bangli House of Representatives from Songan village, Gelgel Wisnawa, also hoped the government to prioritize repair for the road. In the area of the waste plant will also be established a housing for scavengers where the raw materials are obtained from the waste plant. As is known, the non-optimal management of the regional landfill of Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar, Tabanan (Sarbagita) at Suwung Denpasar happened due to negligence by PT Noei as the operator designated by the Sarbagita government seriously affecting the amount of waste. Some observers said that Balinese-speaking day should be preceded by paying attention to the suffering fate of Balinese language teachers. In addition to competing against other teachers in obtaining Balinese language teaching hours, they have not been recruited as civil servant. Every promotion of civil servant prospect for teachers, for instance, it does not touch the Balinese language teachers. In fact, they are spearheading for the preservation and transfer of science on Balinese literature. A Balinese cultural observer, Dr. Nengah Arnawa, keeps on inflam-
ing so that the government of Bali, district government and municipal government take a breakthrough to recruit Balinese language teachers in their respective region. It is necessary because in the recruitment of civil servant, Balinese language teacher Bali is virtually never included. Since Balinese language is very specific, Nengah Arnawa also belonging to the drafting team of Indonesian language book for Curriculum 2013 said that it should become the obligation for governments in the region either in the form of contract teachers or local employees financed through regional budget. He said that all this time the teaching of Balinese language, especially at elementary school, is no man’s land. It is taught by teachers of Hinduism. In the meantime, in the rule of certification the excess of teaching hours for Hinduism teachers should not be filled with Balinese language. Thus, as long as there is no recruitment he believed that Balinese language at elementary school will be unfilled.

Balinese-speaking day in Badung looks awkward and hesitant
ASIDE from the municipal government of Denpasar, the use of Balinese language in certain occasion is also carried out in Badung. Balinese-speaking day (dina mabasa Bali) is applied every Friday and every full moon. Moreover, Balinese language is also used in the plenary session at the Badung House of Representatives. Various dialects of Balinese emerge in the plenary session of the ranks of the people’s representatives of Badung. Understandably the session previously using the national language (Indonesian) is now actually using Balinese language.
Thus, it sounds like a meeting in village hall looking awkward and hesitant. Chairman of the commissions presented their work with members by using Balinese language. Their speech looked still a slightly awk-
ward. A number of legislators and staff often smiled while attending the Balinese-speaking session. Chairman of the Badung House of Representatives, I Putu Parwata, said that the use of Balinese language in the session of the Badung parliament is in line with the Balinese-speaking day proclaimed by the regent and deputy regent of Badung. “Speaking Balinese is scheduled on Fridays and every full moon. So, we in the parliament start the Balinese-speaking day,”
he said. Although the atmosphere at the meeting using Balinese language is slightly different and less flexible, without hesitancy this PDI-P politician of Badung has appealed to use Balinese language every meeting on Friday and full moon. “Once or twice may be somewhat different, later it will become accustomed. Moreover, the purpose is very positive, lest we all cannot speak Balinese. Balinese language is our mother tongue. So, everyone shall know the native language,” he said. The use of Balinese language in Badung has been confirmed by the issuance of the Badung Regent Regulation No. 24/2016 concerning the use of Balinese language in the environment of the government of Badung. This regulation was established in Mangupura on March 4 and entered into force on March 9, 2016 coinciding with the celebration of the Caka New Year 1938. Deputy Regent of Badung, I Ketut Suiasa, said that in the effort to establish the identity and respect for the values of local wisdom, the government of Badung is commit-
ted to cultivating Balinese language at schools and entire ranks of the government of Badung. The regulation mentions that the use of Balinese language is to keep and preserve Balinese language as local language belongs to the cultural wealth of the nation. Thus, it becomes an important factor for the affirmation of regional identity. The use of Balinese language in the government of Badung environment every Friday and full moon related to official meetings / gatherings, oral conversations and direct conversation, organization of government and social events. The use of the Balinese language is excluded in terms of the implementation of assembly at district, provincial and national level involving the elements of inter-provincial and institutions / agencies of central government level and the reading of the letters of public administration and product of legislation. Bali Safari & Marine Park remains tireless in its continuing efforts to encourage children to love and preserve the earth’s natural environment. Most recently, this commitment by the Park was expressed by inviting orphans from the Benih Kasih Orphanage in Bali’s far north to join a daylong celebration dedicated to the love of flora and fauna. “Love our Flora and Fauna Day” was held on Saturday, November 5, 2016, with the Park’s Educational Team preparing a day filled with encounters with the natural environment including some of the wildlife that share this planet with mankind. Among the activities hosted for the visiting children from the Benih Kasih Orphanage was the chance to join a motorized Safari Journey that carried them on slow moving, secure vehicles traveling through three large open compounds that are
the homes to the animals of Africa, India and Indonesia. Later, the kids joined the audiences at a number of animal encounter programs, including the “Predator to Prey” tiger show and the Elephant Educational Show. The Park then shared the concept of recycling via a tour of the jungle “Safari Pool Paper” factory where elephant droppings are turned into useable paper products. The was followed with a lesson that animals need not necessarily be feared as the children shouted in glee when they were set loose in the Park’s Petting Zoo and given the chance to assist in the grooming of a pony. The day of childhood fantasy continued with the children given free access to the wide range of amusement park rides found in the Park’s FunZone. William Santoso, general manager of the Bali Safari & Marine Park, commented on the visit
saying: “’Love of Fauna and Flora Day’ is a day that we are obliged to celebrate each year in order to remind us all of the need to conserve and protect Indonesia’s plant and animal kingdoms. This year, we have taken the opportunity to invite children from a Bali orphanage, embracing them as members of our Park family in the hope they will grow into adults concerned with the natural environment.” National Love of Fauna and Flora Day (Hari Cinta Puspa dan Satwa Nasional) has been celebrated every November 5th since 1992. By 2019, it will have outpaced western TV drama “Gun-

The first ethnic Chinese politician to lead this sprawling city of 10 million, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama is standing for re-election in February, competing with two Muslims for the job. The governorship of the capital is a powerful position and it was a stepping stone for Joko Widodo to the presidency of the country two years ago. At a news conference held in the early hours of Saturday, Widodo called for calm and took a swipe at politicians - whom he didn’t name - for whipping up die-hard demonstrators after most had already gone home. “ ... we deplore the incident after the Isha prayers, when should have already disbanded but became violent. And, we see this was steered by political actors who were exploiting the situation,” Widodo said. Police fired tear gas and water cannon to subdue a restive crowd that police said swelled to about 150,000 after Friday prayers as they congregated around the presidential palace. Some protesters threw rocks at the police, two vehicles were torched and a fire broke out near the city’s National Monument, but by the evening the demonstration was fizzling out. However, in a northern neighbourhood of the city there was a late-night clash between police and a few dozen protesters, and social media reports showed a convenience store being looted. And hundreds camped out until around 4 a.m. beside the parliament building to demand Purnama be charged for
blasphemy. A police spokesman said one person died and 12 were hurt. Local media said about 23 people were arrested, most of them in the north, where overnight police guarded shopping and residential areas that are home to predominantly nonMuslims. About a dozen Muslim groups have accused Purnama of insulting Islam after he jokingly said his opponents had used a verse from the Koran to deceive voters. The verse implies that Muslims should not choose non-Muslims as leaders. Chanting “God is greatest”, many in Friday’s protest waved placards calling for Purnama, popularly known as Ahok, to be jailed for blasphemy. A white banner hung at an overpass was painted with red letters that read “Hang Ahok here”. Police are investigating the case against Purnama, who has apologised for his remarks, insisting he was not criticising the Koranic verse but those who used it to attack him.
