DENPASAR - The Balinese economy in the third quarter of 2014 grew at a slower pace than in the previous quarter, contracting 0.03 point to 2.78 percent. The third-quarter growth was fueled by all sectors, with the service sector recording the highest growth of 8.05 percent, chief of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) office in Bali

and the agricultural sector posted the lowest growth of 1.86 percent. Cumulatively, the Balinese economy grew by 6.08 percent till the third quarter of 2014. Panasunan said the nominal value of Bali’s regional gross domestic product (PDRB) reached Rp27.10 trillion based on the current prices in the third quarter of

2014, and Rp9.40 trillion based on the constant prices of 2000. On the component use side, household consumption and exports still contributed the greatest chunk of the PDRB in the third quarter of 2014. He said the economic slowdown in the third quarter was caused by low household and government consumption.

SEMARAPURA - After the fire hitting the SMPN 3 Banjarangkan junior high school, the equipment of the Klungkung Fire Brigade and safety equipment of the personnel reaped a public criticism. Many people judged the equipment and personnel protection while on duty were very minimal whereas the risk of working in the field was very high. More seriously, the risk assurance of fire brigade personnel was not available. Even, local community should help clog the leaks from the base to another tip of the hose. Not only that, while on duty, the protective equipment such as helmet, heat-resistant jacket and special fire-fighting boot shoes was still lacking. “We only have five sets of safety equipment, while our personnel amount to 30 people. Besides, our personnel do not have employment risk assurance,” he said. The budget allocation for the Klungkung Fire Brigade was very minimal for years. Thankfully, the budget had been increased starting this year, where the allocation reached IDR 291 million. Cherry trees withered due to drought Bali Post

Section Head of the Fire Brigade, Wayan Toya, admitted the matter, Wednesday (Nov 5). When being on duty to extinguish fire at the SMPN 3 Banjarangkan, many people had a pity on the firefighters of Klungkung. Amidst the spirit of the personnel, the existing fire truck was very limited. Even, a local resident claimed that it was in agony. The Klungkung Fire Brigade only had three fire trucks. Even, one of them was still out of order and being repaired. “For the time being, only two trucks can be operated,” he said. As a result, when a fire occurred they could not do much. Sometimes it was forced to ask for a help from the fire brigade of Gianyar, Bangli and Karangasem. When extinguishing fire, the hose used to spray water got a lot of leaks. Thus, the spray of water from the hose to the hotspots was not optimal.

AMLAPURA - Evidently the endeavor of Karangasem County to plant cherry trees is in vain. Dozens of cherry trees planted in line 11 or Jalan Veteran have been withered due to drought. Even, some of them dried up and died without any leaves. Allegedly the different climatic condition of Karangasem from Japan has caused the death of the cherry trees. When asking for confirmation about the cherry tree, the Head of Karangasem Sanitation and Landscaping Agency, I Made Suama, admitted that some cherry trees planted in the Jalur Sebelas had been withered or dead. He reasoned the poor condition of the cherry trees planted by the government occurred due to different weather condition from its natural habitat. “Probably it is not appropriate with the weather in Indonesia. So, most of the cherry trees died,” said I Made Suama.

Due to many cherry trees died, Suama admitted that his party had withdrawn some of them. On that account, his party asserted that some pots indeed contained no cherry trees. However, it did not necessarily disappear, but had been withdrawn. “Some cherry trees were indeed withdrawn because they died,” said I Made Suama. As condition in the field, a number of cherry trees fenced in by bamboo pieces looked dry, like unkempt. “It has always been like that. I often passed here, but the flowers remained like that. They did not want to grow, and the leaf is rare. Probably they lack for water so that they indicated such a growth,” said a resident of Jalan Untung Suropati, I Ketut Sulendra, Thursday. Buleleng Police arrest subsidized fuel trafficker Bali Post

SINGARAJA - Within the past few days, the fuel scarcity in Buleleng was taken advantage of by individuals to get profits by breaking the law related to subsidized fuel. The Criminal Investigation Unit of Buleleng Police detained a suspect of subsidized fuel trafficking. The suspect was prooven to be guilty of misusing the transportation of the subsidized fuel and fuel transport activities without being equipped a transportation business permit. The suspect is named Made Putu Artawan aka MPA, 60, from Kanginan hamlet, Menyali village, Sawan subdistrict. The suspect was arrested by police on Sunday (Nov 2) around 3:30 a.m. The arrest of the suspect was based on public information obtained by police which staed that the petrol station on Jalan Ahmad Yani Singaraja often sold subsidized diesel fuel and gasoline to someone using a pick-up truck which did not have the required paper work. The Chief of the Buleleng Police Criminal Investigation Unit, I Ketut Adnyana TJ, along with the consent of the Buleleng Police Chief Benny Arjanto said that based on field investigatios, police found the pickup truck with license plate DK 9609 UY coming from the East to the West. Thhe truck pulled into the petrol station to look for Pertamax and Premium fuel. The suspect MPA was known to have purchase 104 liters of subsidized diesel fuel worth

IDR 577,500. which were put into four jerrycans. Then, the suspect bribed the petrol station attendant for IDR 15,000 to allow this illegal trasaction to take place. The total amount of money spent by the suspect reached IDR 592,500. At the scene the suspect could not escape and was immediately escorted to the Buleleng Police station for further investigation. “The suspect was unable to present a permit for the fuel purchase, so we brought the suspect to the police station for further investigation. The suspect planned to first collect and then sell the fuel, taking advanttage of fuel price hike,” said Adnyana TJ. This middle-aged man was arrested by police and the evidence consisting of eight jerrycans with 240 liters of Premium fuel, four jerrycans with 105 liters of diesel fuel, a unit of Suzuki pickup truck with license plate DK 9609 UY, key, vehicle registration and two receipts of purchase we seized. “I bought fuel by using jerrycan to put in my car and often bought at the petrol station on Jalan Ahmad Yani and Jalan Gajah Mada. I bought every week and it was also allowed by the petrol station attendants,” said the suspect MPA. For his action, the suspect was charged with the Article 55 of the Law No.22/2001 about Oil and Gas, with the sanction of imprisonment for six years and a maximal fine of IDR 60 billion, or a maximal punishment of four years and a maximal fine of IDR 40 billion. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

SAO PAULO - Stella McCartney on Wednesday launched an exclusive range for Brazilian consumers at Sao Paulo Fashion Week, saying she was targeting a “cool and sexy” market. “For me, Brazilian women are cool and sexy I have to say, and they are definitely aware when it comes to fashion,” the 43-year-old designer said. “I think they’re very much at the forefront of fashion,” said McCartney, daughter of Beatles legend Paul, as she launched the apparel for C&A. She added she was driven by a desire to take a sustainable and responsible approach to her work -- values she said came from her parents. “I grew up in the countryside, on an organic farm, so I was very aware of the seasons of nature. “So for me, when I went into fashion, I wanted to be responsible, and have a different take on luxury fashion, where I would not work with fur or leather,” said McCartney, adding she wanted her collection to be affordable options for the buying public at large. “I try to approach what I do in fashion in a sustainable and a responsible way, so not only in the materials that I use, but the way that I source and manufacture my product,” she said of a range priced between $35 and $150 and made from fabrics including cotton, viscose, lame and lace. DENPASAR - The Institute of National Aviation and Space (Lapan) said Indonesia needs space technology of remote sensing that could draw the map of the country’s marine potentials altogether and systematically. “In order to back development of the maritime sector a technology is needed that could monitor the entire sea territory systematically,” Chief spokesman of Lapan Jasyanto said. Jasyanto said remote sensing technology using satellite service would be effective to monitor and detect marine natural resources. The technology could be used to spot ridges of rock and in planning development of the marine potentials for economy and tourism, he cited. He added, with the remote sensing technology, the physical and biological aspects of the sea such as surface temperature and chlorophyll content could be detected. Those elements are important to locate the potential fishing ground in the sea through the Indonesian fish catching potential zone (ZPPI). “With the ZPPI, fishermen would be easy to find a location where there are many fishes,” he said. Remote sensing is also important to get information about islands in outer areas for security purposes, he said. “Monitoring of natural resources and sea security would be more efficient and effective as satellite could give information with wide coverage,” he said. Development of remote sensing technology would be discussed in an international conference titled “Pan Ocean Remote Sensing Conference” (PORSEC) to be held by Lapan in cooperation with the state Udayana University in Denpasar from Nov. 4-7. CAIRO — A bomb blast aboard a train traveling in the Nile Delta north of Cairo killed four people and wounded nine, security officials said on Thursday. They said the blast took place shortly before midnight on Wednesday and that two policemen were among those killed. Also late Wednesday, three people were wounded when a homemade bomb went off aboard a commuter train in the Cairo suburb of al-Marg, said the officials. On Thursday morning in Cairo, a woman was slightly injured when a homemade explosive device went off near one of the city’s presidential facilities, the infrequently used alQuba palace, they said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media. No one immediately claimed responsibility for planting any of the three bombs, but the attacks bore the hallmarks of Islamic militants fighting the government of President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, a generalturned-politician who took office in June, nearly a year after he led the military ouster of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi. Authorities have for years battled Islamic militants in the Sinai Peninsula, but the unrest there has escalated into a full-fledged insurgency since Morsi’s ouster in July last year. The attacks, mainly targeting security forces, have spread to the Nile Delta and Cairo itself. The attacks in Cairo have mainly involved small, homemade bombs that cause few casualties. KABUL — The head of NATO paid an unannounced visit to Kabul on Thursday, where he vowed that the Western alliance would continue supporting the country after foreign combat troops withdraw at the end of the year. “We are ending the combat mission and are starting a new chapter in which the future of Afghanistan is in the hands if the Afghan people,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said. NATO has committed to continued funding for Afghan national forces of $4.1 billion annually and to an open-ended training and support mission to help the government combat a still-potent Taliban insurgency. Stoltenberg, who took over as the head of the alliance on Oct. 1, also visited a training center for Afghan special forces. President Ashraf Ghani, who assumed office earlier this year following a protracted election dispute, accepted an invitation to attend a NATO ministerial meeting on Dec. 2. He said cooperation with the international community would focus on a wide range of non-security issues, including women’s rights, governance and environmental protection. “Give us a break,” he said, referring to the challenges facing his one-month-old government. NATO and the United States are withdrawing combat forces from Afghanistan at the end of the year, after 13 years of fighting the Taliban. A residual force of up to 12,000 U.S. and NATO forces will remain to provide training and backup for Afghanistan’s 350,000 security forces. The Taliban remain an imposing force in much of the country and continue to carry out near-daily attacks mainly targeting security forces. The revitalization is in a bid to support the country’s ambition to become the world largest cocoa producer, Jokowi said during his visit to West Sulawesi, on Thursday. “The revitalization is expected to take three to four years starting 2015,” he told cocoa farmers in Saletto in the district of Mamuju, West Sulawesi. The president asked Minister of Agrarian affairs Ferry Mursidan to immediately prepare the certificate for the people’s plantations. He also asked banks to help with credits for cocoa plantations. He said he would encourage development of cocoa processing industry in cocoa production

centers. He said in three years Indonesia should be the world’s largest producer of cocoa. Currently the country is the third largest producer after the Ivory Coast and Ghana in Africa. “For that purpose the farmers need to work the harder,” he said. Earlier Jokowi inspected irrigation system in Beru-Beru, Mamuju and symbolically distributed the Healthy Indonesian cards, Smart Indonesian cards and Prosperous Family cards to a number of the villager. Sofyan Djalil became the fourth minister who submitted their wealth disclosure forms to the KPK after Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Minister Yuddy Chrisnandi, Health Minister Nila Djowita Moeloek and Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman. Djalil said that he had debt totaling Rp3.5 billion when recently buying a house located in Central Jakarta’s Menteng Dalam area but he refused to detail his wealth. “I do not want to announce this. The KPK will do that. This is a publicly-accessible document. Please wait until the KPK processes and announces it. For your information, I have reported my wealth disclosure forms for five times,” he said. JAKARTA - An Iranian oil and gas company said it is ready to supply crude oil to feed Indonesian oil refineries, an official said on Thursday. Care taker Oil and Gas Director General Naryanto Wagimin said the Indonesian government welcomes the offer. “We will discuss that matter further in a working group,” Naryanto said after accompanying representative of the Iranian Energy Ministry to a meeting with the Energy and Mineral Resource Minister Sudirman Said. He said the Iranian embassy said crude oil from Iran meets the specifications needed by the Cilacap oil refinery of the state oil and gas company PT Pertamina. He said Iran also wants to renew talks on cooperation to build an oil refinery, negotiations on which halted recently. Under the scheme the refinery would be built in cooperation with Indonesia company with crude oil to be supplied from Iran. “The minister is enthusiastic with the plan to build the refinery. Therefore a working group would be formed,” he said. As for the incentives asked by the

investor, discussion would be held further, he added. “I have heard about an Indonesia investor wanting to build an oil refinery, but there was no progress made so far,” he said. In 2007, Iran through its oil and gas state company National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company (NIORDC) indicated interest in building an oil refinery with a processing capacity of 300,000 barrels of crude oil per day to cost around US$6 billion. The plan dated back to a meeting between former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and former Iranian President Ahmadinejad. The project was to be built in Bojanegara, Banten, in cooperation with Pertamina with NIORDC to have a 40 percent stake, Pertamina 40 percent and Malaysian Petrofield 20 percent. The refinery would be operated by a joint venture company named PT Banten Bay Refinery. The project was already approved by the Oil and Gas Directorate General on 27 May, 2008 and the Capital Investment Coordinating Board on 27 November 2008.

Radical action from Formula 1’s small teams over Bernie Ecclestone’s failure to address cost issues would do more harm than good, insist leading team bosses. After a United States Grand Prix weekend where the smaller outfits whipped up talk of a strike - even though they never actually threatened it openly - there is pressure on Ecclestone to address the matter. Talks between Ecclestone and Sauber, Force India and Lotus were scheduled for this week, amid hopes that an agreement could be reached by the Brazilian GP. Red Bull boss Christian Horner and Mercedes chief Toto Wolff have urged Ecclestone to prevent the current problems dragging on, and ensure the wild idea of a boycott does not become real. Wolff said: “I’m not into strikes - it’s kept me stranded with Air France and Lufthansa before. “So I don’t think a strike is what you do these days, and threatening to strike even less. “I don’t think it would be good for Formula 1. That wouldn’t help

the smaller teams either. “It’s about sitting around the table, clearing the air, saying this is what we think should happen and then discussing it with the commercial rights holder.” Horner believes a protest by the three teams would achieve nothing, and suggested that even talking about the idea was hurting F1’s reputation. “They are here to compete,” he said. “Force India is trying to beat McLaren. If they are sitting in the garage, they are not going to be going anywhere. That doesn’t work. “And doing it publicly is the wrong way to do it. “What F1 has done during the last couple of weeks with the public slanging matches that have gone on are not good for the sport, because the sport should be focusing on what we have seen in America: good racing, wheel to wheel racing. “The politics and the fiscal issues should be dealt behind closed doors, with the commercial rights holder, and get sorted.”

Second Romanian player gets 16-match ban Reuters

BUCHAREST - FC Viitorul Constanta centre back Alin Seroni has been banned for 16 matches for a reckless foul in a domestic match, the Romanian football federation’s (FRF) said late on Wednesday. The punishment came a few hours after the FRF decided to ban FCM Targu Mures midfielder Gabriel Muresan for 16 matches following a violent tackle during his team’s 1-0 league win over champions Steaua Buchrast on Oct. 26. Targu Mures’s general director Daniel Stanciu reacted angrily to Muresan’s punishment, saying other players had committed bad fouls but escaped serious bans. Seroni was handed the heavy punishment following a poor challenge on Universi-

tatea Craiova’s Nicusor Bancu during a Romanian Cup match on Oct. 29. Bancu suffered an ankle fracture in the first period of extra-time with referee Florin Miron immediately showing Seroni a second yellow card. Universitatea won the round of 16 match 2-1 and will meet Steaua in the quarter-finals. The 28-year-old defender, who joined Viitorul from Poli Timisoara earlier this year, will not return on the field before April. MARIBOR, Slovenia — Eden Hazard had a late penalty saved as Chelsea missed a chance to advance from Group G in the Champions League on Wednesday, drawing 1-1 with Maribor. Unrecognizable from the side that was crushed 6-0 by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge two weeks ago, Maribor took a deserved lead in the 50th minute when Agim Ibraimi’s superb curling shot beat Petr Cech in the Chelsea goal. Chelsea, which leads the group with eight points, equalized in the 73rd minute through Nemanja Matic who latched onto a John Terry header to score from close range. Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho felt his side had become complacent in what many expected would be another straightforward victory over the Slovenians. “Many times surprises happen when people are not fully focused, when they believe the game can’t be a difficult one,” Mourinho said. “Only when Maribor scored did the players realize the game was in danger. After that, a fantastic reaction. We deserved to win, clearly.” Mourinho reacted to a poor first-half showing by his side at

the Stadion Ljudski vrt by making a double substitution at halftime, introducing striker Diego Costa and Oscar.
