“Deficit reduction by a creditor country such as Germany is in direct contradiction of the lessons learnt from the Great Depression of the 1930s. It is liable to push Europe into a period of prolonged stagnation or worse,” Soros said. Germany is unlikely to change its ways, however, because its economy is doing well and because the difficulties of other countries can be blamed on structural rigidities, Soros said. Graced by spread of jumbo red-white flag Celebration of the 65th anniversary of the TNI falling on Tuesday (Oct 5) was marked by holding a ceremony at the Puputan Badung Square by the ranks of Udayana Regional Military Command. The current anniversary looked so special because other than presentation of fragmentary staged by hundreds of dancers, it was also jazzed up by the spread of super jumbo redwhite flag sizing 120 meters x 80 meters. Even, due to the large size of the flag spread, the museum record of Indonesia (MURI) noted the achievement in its record book. How many clothes were spent for the jumbo flag? Not many people guessed if the anniversary of the TNI this time was felt quite special. After the official ceremony, it was presented a cultural attraction in the form of fragmentary with the title of”Red-white of Equatorial Emerald.” The fragmentary was performed by the Indonesia Institute of Arts (ISI) Denpasar in collaboration with Mahendradatta University, Denpasar, Ganesha Education University (Undiksa), Teacher’s Training College (IKIP PGRI Bali), National Education University (Undiknas), Bungkulan Health College (STIKES) Singaraja, STIE Triatma Mulya High School of Economics, and SMAN 1 Denpasar state senior high school. Additionally, the other participants backing up the event consisted of SMP Harapan Nusantara junior high school, alumni of Bali Pageant Contest, and School Boy-Girl Pageant, Hindu students association, association of tourism ambassador, and Purna
Bona Dance Studio, Gianyar. However, before the presentation of fragmentary, 12 painters showed off their capability through the scrape of airbrush on canvas on the side of the eastern edge of the ceremony. The paintings made were in accordance with military activities in performing their duties to maintain the integrity of the Unitary States of the RI (NKRI) and its commitment to unite with the people. In the sidelines of the painter taking their action, it was resumed with the performance of colossal fragmentary. The fragments of dance told about the triumph of Majapahit Kingdom composed nicely. As consequence, it could win the attention of participants attending the ceremony and invitees present at Puputan Badung Square. After the appearance of that colossal dance fragments, celebration of the TNI’s anniversary remarkably surprised the invitees. The reason, hundreds of children from several universities and TNI soldiers expanded a jumbo red-white flag. Size of the flag was 120 meters x 80 meters. Gus Marhaen as the organizer of the jumbo red-white flag spread said the preparation to make the flag was long time enough. Even, to sew the flag it took him about 14 days. ”We spent at least 150 rolls of red-white clothes. “We completed the tasks through mutual assistance,” said Gus Marhaen. In fact, the colossal action aroused the MURI to register the attraction in its book of record. That jumbo-size redwhite flag was put on the number 4498. “The large-size flag was officially registered on number 4498 in the record of MURI,” said Senior Manager of MURI, Paul Pangka. (ara)

Interfaith dialogue is important to implement continuously. Each religion should be able to accept and appreciate the existing differences. It is required honesty and positive outlook towards other religions. As consequence, it can give contribution to the realization of peace and multicultural and multi-religious societal harmony. Similarly, religion must become a fundamental moral message to humanity. Religion also turns more functional in overcoming the problems of life. Those were some points revealed in the seminar entitled ‘Samawi and Ardhi Dialogue in Hindu Dharma Land: Reflecting on Ardhi Religion organized in the Post Graduate Hall of Hindu Dharma University of Indonesia, Tuesday (Oct 5). The seminar featured the speakers Prof. Dr. Franz Magnis Suseno (STF Driyarkara), Prof. Dr. Nur Syam, (Rector of IAIN Sunan Ampel, Surabaya) and Director of Postgraduate Program of Unhi Dr. I.B. Gunadha. The seminar was attended by postgraduate and graduate students of Unhi and directed by Assistant to Director I of Postgraduate Program Prof. Dr. Putu Gelgel. Prof. I.B. Gunada said humans were religious creatures. On that account, religion became the most ideal requirement. Similarly, religion becomes the guarantor of the realization of well-being life of the world (jagadhita) and the highest happiness (moksha). To achieve such conditions, humans attempted to improve the quality of his faith; increase the frequency and quality of worship and deepen the scriptural learning. However, no less people established their faith by building subjective pride, namely by considering that their own religion was superior and finding the weaknesses of other religions. As a result, they were trapped in a narrow fanaticism. In addition, it also appeared dichotomous classification of religions, such as tribal religions, religious law, and liberation religions. Likewise, it raised some dichotomies of prophetic religion vs. spirituality religion, Abrahamic religion vs. Oriental religions and worldly religion vs. heavenly religion.
According to Prof. I.B. Gunada, religion had become a fundamental moral message to humanity. Religion would turn more functional in overcoming the problems of life. Religious fanaticism was also expected to narrow the gap heading for the multi-religion and multicultural societal harmony. Religion was also expected to take function and message as a provider of value system, motivator and inspirer in the work, became a way of life and establisher of conscience. In the meantime, Franz Magnis Suseno said that interfaith dialogue should be continued. As a matter of fact, religions could work together and be united by the values of humanity existing inside. Each religion should be able to accept and appreciate differences. We had to be honest and have positive thinking towards other religions. Of course, it would be able to give contribution to the realization of peace, unity and to get out of the conflict. Comparable idea was delivered by Prof. Nur Syam. The emergence of religious and interfaith conflicts because the parties involved assumed their religion was the most correct. In the context of maintaining the interfaith harmony, Nur Syam alluded to the opinion of one of the religious figures that different concept should not be equated and the same one should not be distinguished. The phrase was considered very simple but full of meaning. In other words, the difference had to be appreciated. The Prophet alone, asserted Nur Syam, really appreciated pluralism. Therefore, we had to appreciate the difference itself. To anticipate any conflict, according to Nur Syam, it was important to organize religious dialogue continuously, especially those regarding to the dimensions of humanity owned by each religion. Thus, the harmony and safety could be achieved. “Concordance will engender harmony, while harmony will then engender safety,” he said. In the meantime, in regard to the dichotomy of those religions, according to him, it tended to be caused by social commentary or a man-made construction. (08)

International Airport Project in Gerokgak ”Blurry Unsure” Singaraja (Bali Post) –
After it was all huge two months ago, now the international airport project in Gerokgak Subdistrict thought to be blurry unsure. Also the Turkish investor that’s supposed to come early August never came. A Gerokgak resident, last Tuesday (5/10), admitted worried about this huge project that probably now left behind just like any other huge projects there were. Meanwhile, those land proposers started to go around asking residents to sell their lands, “Things floating like this is dangerous because it is affecting the safeness and disciplinary at some areas in Gerokgak.” For that, the resident hoped that this project plan can be informed clearly if it’s cancelled or continuing. Especially the investor that was said will come in August yet it never appeared and caused residents to be more confused in the middle of the project by the unsure information priory on the project location, “The location is still unsure. There are some that said in Sumberklampok, some said Sumberkima, there’s also some that said it’s not in Gerokgak but in Kubutambahan.” Head of Regional Development Planning Board (Bappeda), Gede Dharmaja, confirmed that the project
is still ongoing. According to him the investor will still come with an official from the Indonesian Republic Secretary Cabinet, “The project is a join work between two countries, Indonesia and Turkey. And President agreed to have the location in Buleleng.” Dharmaja confirmed that the project plan is still in continuation. The Region Government is still doing some researches that were asked by the investors. For example, not long ago, investor asked the result to the research on the land and stones condition of Gerokgak. For that Buleleng Government sent the results, “Process is still going on, so need to be patient as this project has a huge scale.” In the other side, Dharmaja stated as it has been received by the investor it is possible that the project will be built around Letkol Wisnu Airport in Sumberkima. Yet this project will not erase Letkol Wisnu Airport, “The airport that has existed will be part of the international aiport.” As the story before, in Buleleng it will be built an international airport that will finish around 1.000 hectares of land. In connecting to this project, Regent Bagiada with some officials silently visited Turkey and said from Turkey there will be an investor coming early August, yet it never came until now. (kmb15)

Pakistan links drone strikes to Europe terror plot AFP
LONDON – Increased US drone strikes in Pakistan’s tribal areas are linked to a terror plot targeting Europe, Pakistan’s US envoy said Wednesday, amid mounting fears that Al-Qaeda is planning a wave of attacks. Ambassador Hussein Haqqani told the BBC that the increase in strikes in North Waziristan, a reputed militant hotbed, came after intelligence agencies uncovered a plot to “attack multiple targets in Europe.” He also said that a strike on Monday in the district which killed eight militants, including five Germans, was linked to the plot. “I think that the activity we see in North Waziristan in terms of strikes... is connected to the terrorist warnings that we have heard about potential strikes in Europe,” he told the British broadcaster. But he urged people to stay calm and vowed intelligence agencies would foil any plot. US drone strikes in Pakistan have increased in recent weeks, with authorities there reporting 24 attacks
since September 3 which have killed more than 140 people. An Al-Qaeda plot planned in Pakistan is targeting Britain, France and Germany but planning for the attacks was at an early stage when intelligence agencies learned of them, according to reports. Japan, Sweden, the United States and Britain have warned their citizens travelling in Europe of the possibility of a terrorist attack. LONDON – A Saudi prince killed his servant in their room at a luxury London hotel in a ferocious beating which had a sexual element, a British court was told Tuesday. Bandar Abdulaziz, was found dead in bed at the Landmark Hotel in central London on February 15 this year, having suffered extensive injuries, including bite marks to his cheeks, the Old Bailey jury was told. The 32-year-old had spent the previous three years traveling as an occasional companion of Saud Abdulaziz bin Nasser al Saud, whose father is a nephew of the Saudi king and whose mother is a daughter of the king, the court heard. The servant had suffered “a series of heavy punches or blows to his head and face,” leaving his left
eye closed and swollen, his lips split open and his teeth chipped and broken, prosecutor Jonathan Laidlaw said. There also were injuries to his ears and internal bruising and bleeding to the brain, as well as severe injuries to the neck consistent with manual compression, the court was told. The prosecution said the victim had deep bruising to the back, a rib fracture and trauma to the stomach caused by heavy punches or kicks, the Press Association reported. “The post-mortem examination was to reveal the ferocity of the attack to which he had been subjected before he died,” Laidlaw said. It was not the first time the victim had been subjected to beatings, including one incident after which his ear needed reconstruction, he said.

Thailand blames ‘Red Shirts’ for deadly bomb blast AFP
BANGKOK – Thailand on Wednesday blamed a deadly blast at an apartment complex near Bangkok on the anti-government “Red Shirt” movement as investigators probed whether a bombmaker caused the explosion accidentally. Authorities said the powerful blast, which killed at least three people and injured nine late Tuesday, was believed to be linked to political unrest. “It’s clear that the bombers are Red Shirt people,” Defence Minister General Prawit Wongsuwon told AFP. “As far as I know there were several bombs stored in that room, as you can see that it was very powerful. There are a lot of bombs kept in other places,” he said. Police found three bodies and one severed limb, suggesting the final death toll could be four, said Chatree Charoencheewakul, head of the Emergency Medical Institute of Thailand. The blast — believed to have occurred in a room on the second floor of the apartment building in Nonthaburi Province north of Bangkok — shattered windows and damaged nearby buildings. “It was about 10 kilos (22 pounds) of explosive material,” Lieutenant Colonel Kamthorn Ucharoen of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Identification Special Operation Division said. “We are checking what type of bomb it was but we found nitrate. The bombers were probably mak-

The explosion came hours after Thailand extended a state of emergency in Nonthaburi and three other provinces, including Bangkok, for three more months. Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

MORELIA, Mexico – Twenty men kidnapped last week in the Pacific resort city of Acapulco had no criminal records and may have been targeted by mistake, Mexican investigators said Tuesday. Police have found no trace of the men, whose kidnapping is one of the biggest blows yet to a resort city whose sparkling bay was a favorite playground of Hollywood’s elite decades ago. Acapulco has long since lost its former glory and is now mostly popular with Mexican tourists. Even that source of income has been jeopardized as the port city becomes a drug trafficking battleground. Shootouts have erupted near the main tourist strip and in August, soldiers killed a U.S. man on a highway outside the city. The soldiers said the American fired at them first, but the military says it is investigating that claim. Police have confirmed that 19 of the abducted men were mechanics from the western city of Morelia and apparently had been vacationing together in the Pacific resort city, said Jesus Montejano, the state attorney general of Michoacan state, were Morelia is located. But a search through criminal records in Michoacan and Guerrero states, and interviews with the families of the men, appeared to corroborate his story, officials have since said. Ambassador Hussein Haqqani told the BBC that the increase in strikes in North Waziristan came after intelligence agencies uncovered a plot to “attack multiple targets in Europe.” He also said that a drone strike on Monday in the district which killed eight militants, including five Germans, was linked to the plot. “I think that the activity we see in North Waziristan in terms of strikes... is connected to the terrorist warnings that we have heard about potential strikes in Europe,” he said.
The United States does not as a rule confirm drone attacks, but its military and the Central Intelligence Agency operating in Afghanistan are the only forces that deploy the pilotless aircraft in the region. The latest tanker attack came as the main land route for NATO supplies crossing from Pakistan to Afghanistan remained closed for a seventh consecutive day. WASIOR - The remote Indonesian town of Wasior was a scene of devastation Wednesday, with bodies lying unclaimed in the debris of flash floods that killed at least 86 people and left dozens missing. The seaside town’s Sanduay neighbourhood was all but flattened when a wall of mud, rocks and logs hit it on Monday. An AFP reporter who reached the area, 240 kilometres (150 miles) southeast of Manokwari, West Papua province, said hundreds of homes had been destroyed. Residents and rescue teams were searching the mud and debris for survivors but officials said the death toll is almost certain to rise. Several bodies could be seen wedged beneath rocks and logs that were washed into the town from surrounding hillsides. Some of the logs — felled by timber workers in nearby forests —
were two metres (seven feet) wide and left a trail of destruction as they swept through the town on the raging flood waters. “Earlier Monday morning there were sudden floods but on a small scale. But 30 minutes later I heard a kind of big thunder and I saw powerful waters coming from the mountain,” 50-year-old resident Wilem Imburi told AFP. “There was chaos and people panicked and tried to run to safety.” Father-of-two Mahmud, 36, said he managed to hold on to his son but lost his two-year-old daughter. “I was holding my two kids when the waters came, but I didn’t have enough strength and lost grip of my

BI has predicted that the Indonesian economy will expand by a range of 6.0-6.5 percent next year on the back of improving global and domestic economy. Domestic consumption would remain strong and export performance would increase along with the global economic recovery, Bank Indonesia Governor Darmin Nasution said here on Tuesday. The rising foreign investment inflows in line with strong domestic and global demand would also contribute to the economic growth next year, he said. The 2011 economic growth forecast is higher than the economic growth forecast of 6.0-6.3 percent for this year and is well above the assumed economic growth of 6.4 percent set in the draft 2011 state budget. Darmin said the economy grew 6.2 percent until the second quarter of 2010. In the third quarter alone, the economy expanded 6.3 percent, fueled by strong consumption, export performance and investment inflows.

Speaking to newsmen at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, East Jakarta, on Tuesday afternoon, he said his state visit to Holland had to be postponed until a yet to be determined time frame. The head of state and his entourage had been scheduled to leave Jakarta by the Indonesian Air Force One (Garuda Indonesia’s Airbus 330-200) on Tuesday at about 01:30 pm local time. As a result of the movement of certain elements in Holland that would file lawsuit on human rights issues in Indonesia, President Yudhoyono said he decided to cancel his state visit. “More than that, there has even been a demand for the arrest of Indonesia’s president,” he said. A spokesman of the Indonesian Embassy in The Hague, Firdaus Dahlan, said earlier that the Dutch

Political analyst of Hasanuddin University Prof.Dr.Aswanto urged President Yudhoyono to give an immediate clarification for cancelling his state visit to Holland. The clarification was needed to maintain the existing cordial relations with the Netherlands, he said. “It would be a matter of great regret if the two countries’ diplomatic relations that have so far been running well and harmoniously is now disturbed (by the sudden cancellation of the president’s state visit),” he said. The cancellation would only have minor impact on the two countries’ bilateral relations if President Yudhoyono could further clarify the real cause of the cancellation, he said. Prof.Dr.Aswanto said Dutch leaders might be disappointed with President Yudhoyono’s decision because his state visit was to be done at the official invitation of the Dutch queen. Denpasar – The number of tourists from Japan visited Bali during January through August 2010 period decreased 22.57% compare to the similar period last year. This year, the number of Japanese tourists was 168,806 people while last year, the total number of tourists from Japan during the eight months period was 218,298 tourists. Gede Suarsa, the head of Bali Statistics Department, said “the decrease is very worrying and it is because the economics recession which happened in Japan.” He also said that even tough there was a decrase in the number or tourists from Japan visited Bali but it is still on the second place of the top ten countries that citizen visited Bali. Most of the tourists were coming through Ngurah Rai Airport and only 9 of them used sea transportations. Suarsa said that the number of tourists from Japan was 10.06% from the total number of tourists visited Bali during January through August 2010 period which was
1,678,170 tourists. The number increased 9.11% compared to the same period last year which was 1,438,048 people. Rabies kills 150 people every year Antara
DENPASAR - Rabies is taking an average of 150 lives in Indonesia every year, Director General for Disease Control and Environment’s Sanitation Candra Yoga Aditama said. “Though the number is relatively smaller compared to other countries, effective and thorough treatment of the disease will allow us to reduce the number of casualties further,” Candra said here on Tuesday. According to official data, 300,000 people die every year in India due to rabies while in China there were 2,500 fatalities per year.
Apart from making an effort to distance people from dog bites, he said, vaccination and culling of infected animals were also important to prevent the spread of rabies in the community. Earlier, the Bali provincial administration kept on killing stray dog despite international protests, spokesman for the administration I Ketut Teneng said. Teneng added the decision to continue culling stray dogs was aimed at preventing the spread of rabies by the dogs. Apart from killing the dogs, he argued, Bali authorities had also vaccinated pet dogs. Up till now some 977,461
stray dogs have been killed, and 348,069 dogs vaccinated. Cases of dog bite in Bali since the rabies outbreak had reached 25,531 in 2008. The number of dog bite cases had raised demand for anti-rabies vaccines. Up till now, Bali province had spent 23,031 vials of the vaccines, and still has 15,582 more available ready for use. Teneng said the Bali administration‘s action in dealing with stray dogs may eliminate rabies there in 2012. LONDON - Bank of England policymakers will this week consider pumping more new money into Britain’s fragile economy, following fresh stimulus measures taken by the Bank of Japan to bolster a weak recovery. The Bank of England (BoE) is expected to hold its key lending rate at a record-low 0.50 percent after a two-day monetary policy meeting which concludes on Thursday. Policymaker Adam Posen last week said the central bank should consider injecting more money into the economy to bolster recovery and warned that inaction could undermine growth and push down inflation. On Tuesday, the Bank of Japan (BoJ) surprised markets by adopting a near zero rate policy and other measures to help safeguard a faltering recovery from the threats of deflation, or falling prices, and a strong yen. The BoJ lowered its key interest rate to a range of between zero and 0.1 percent, from the 0.1 percent set at the height of the financial crisis in December 2008. While the European Central Bank is expected to maintain eurozone borrowing costs at 1.0 per-
cent on Thursday, it may also indicate moves towards fresh stimulus measures. The US Federal Reserve has meanwhile hinted that it may adopt similar plans if recovery falters in the world’s biggest economy. The Bank of Japan on Tuesday announced an asset purchase scheme in an expansion of earlier efforts to generate demand, boost liquidity and tackle persistent deflation. It said it would examine establishing a temporary fund to buy about 5.0 trillion yen (60 billion dollars) in assets such as government bonds, commercial paper, corporate bonds and exchange traded funds. The BoE’s own asset purchase scheme, known as quantitative easing (QE), has seen it effectively create some 200 billion pounds (230 billion euros, 317 billion dollars) of new money by purchasing government bonds and high-quality private sector assets.
The scheme ended in February but analysts believe the BoE’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) will soon have to revisit the policy given the risks facing Britain. “While perhaps not a major risk this month, the chances of the MPC resuming its QE operations have increased recently amid fears that the UK recovery is losing momentum and that activity could be dealt a downward jolt from the proposed cuts in public spending,” said Investec economist Philip Shaw. Britain came out of a recordlength downturn in late 2009 but some economists fear another round of brutal austerity measures, due from the government in two weeks, could help tip the economy into a double-dip recession. The BoE slashed interest rates to the record low 0.50 percent in March 2009, when it also launched QE in an attempt to drag Britain out of a deep recession sparked by the global financial crisis.

The talks will comprise four main areas of negotiations — market access for goods and services, investment, trade facilitation issues and economic cooperation, according to the statement. “Stemming from this new bilateral development, Prime Minister Najib proposed that the first round of talks should be held this year to take advantage of the positive momentum,” the ministry said. The EU is a key trade and investment partner for Malaysia. In 2009, the EU accounted for 11.2 percent of Malaysia’s global trade and 10.8 percent of Malaysia’s total exports. As a regional grouping, the EU remains Malaysia’s largest source of foreign direct investment with a total investment inflow of 13.6 billion
dollars last year, mainly in manufacturing. The EU has held free trade talks with Singapore — the region’s most developed economy — and expects to conclude them by the end of next year. It has also agreed to open free trade talks with Vietnam. NEW YORK – There’s something wrong in “Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark” — and only Julie Taymor can hear it. “Stop a second,” she says inside the Foxwoods Theatre in Times Square during a recent rehearsal of the much-delayed show. “We need a sound effect.” The swelling music abruptly stops. The five actors on stage — including Reeve Carney as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Jennifer Damiano as Mary Jane — become still. The stage lights end their dance. Taymor’s right: The sound of an angry door slam wasn’t heard. “We’re on it,” says a sound engineer. There’s naturally much to get done before the costly and complicated show opens on Dec. 21, but a recent visit by The Associated Press revealed a methodical and remarkably calm production. Michael Cohl, the lead producer, is asked how it’s all going. “Very complicated, very quickly and very slowly — all at the same time,” he says with a weary smile. “We’re fine. We’ll be there.” The musical has been in the works for more than six years, starting with an announcement about the show in
2004. Since then, producers have come and gone, and so have some cast members — Evan Rachel Wood and Alan Cumming were once cast as Mary-Jane and the Green Goblin. Spider-Man may be the hero on the stage, but it is Cohl who might be considered the production’s savior after he came in and financially stabilized a musical that had been dogged by money problems. “The budget’s OK,” he says. “It’s a new budget every day.” When open, this reported $60 million show will have 41 cast members, 18 orchestra members and about 18 new songs by U2’s Bono and the Edge. It will have as its main lead a singer in a rock band whose biggest acting credit so far is in Taymor’s upcoming adaptation of “The Tempest.” Yet there seems no panic, no
screaming. The cast seems loose, the engineers unruffled, the pauses between resets without tension. Someone on the technical side even has her tiny dog on her lap, its head bathed in the light of a computer screen. Between scenes, the Cirque du Soleil-designed aerial technology is practiced. “OK, we’re going hot!” comes the warning. A moment later, a stuntman in a harness soars over the crowd at 40 mph, looping huge circles that make even the jaded gasp. “It turns you into a 7-year-old,” says Isabel Keating, the Tony nominated actress of “The Boy From Oz,” “Enchanted April” and “Hairspray” who will be playing Peter Parker’s Aunt May. The scale of it all hits you as soon as you enter the massive theater, which will seat 1,960 when ready. The orchestra section’s seats have been yanked up to make room for dozens of makeshift boards acting as desks, crammed with laptops, phones and monitors. The balcony is packed with hulking equipment blinking tiny LEDs. It resembles a NASA control room.

The Manila-based airline, known for holding party games and singing contests on its lowfare domestic and Asian flights, said Tuesday it resorted to dancing stewardesses to draw more passenger attention to its in-flight safety reminders. “People hardly pay attention to the safety demo on the ground,” Cebu Pacific Vice President for marketing Candice Iyog said. “The airline was very thrilled with the outcome.” Three stewardesses in pastel shirts and khaki skirts danced away to Lady Gaga’s hit “Just Dance” along a narrow A-320 pas-

FRANKFURT - The world’s biggest book fair in Frankfurt is used to seeing some big book launches, but none came larger than a six-by-nine-foot (two-by-three-metre) Atlas unveiled on Wednesday. Yours for a cool 100,000 dollars, Australian publisher Gordon Cheers said that the last book even close in size to his 128-page volume was the Klencke Atlas, produced in 1660 as a gift for Charles II of England. “But that was about one foot smaller than this,” Cheers proudly told AFP. “This is the first time a book this size has ever been seen.” Just to turn a page takes all his strength and the book took people three hours to get into position for visitors to the Frankfurt Book Fair, which runs until Sunday. This makes his Atlas the antithesis of this year’s book fair, which is devoted to smart, mobile content.
“It’s all about creating a legacy,” the Sydney-based publisher said. “Today, everything is digital and it’s gone in a second. This will still be around in 500 years.” The book took around a month to produce and Cheers is limiting the print run of his monster Atlas to 31. He has already sold two volumes to museums in the United Arab Emirates and is confident he will sell the whole lot.
Cheers worked for British publishing giants Penguin and then Random House, but neither firm was interested in his project, so he left to found his own company, he said. The book contains maps of whole continents, as well as sharp images of famous sites collaged together from 1,000 individual pictures. As far as he knows, no one else is producing books on this scale. “I think we’re the only ones crazy enough,” quipped Cheers.

SYDNEY - Scientists Wednesday unveiled a spectacular array of more than 200 new species discovered in the Pacific islands of Papua New Guinea, including a whitetailed mouse and a tiny, longsnouted frog. The survey of remote New Britain island and the Southern Highlands ranges, accessible only by a combination of small plane, dinghy, helicopter and foot, found an exciting range of new mammals, amphibians, insects and plants. “To find a completely new genus of mammal in this day and age is pretty cool,” said lead researcher Steve Richards of the new mouse species discovery. “I mean, people have heard of birds of paradise and tree-climbing kangaroos and stuff, but when you
look even closer at the small things you just realise that there’s a staggering diversity out there that we really know nothing about,” he told AFP. Papua New Guinea’s jungles are one of just three wild rainforest areas, along with the Amazon and the Congo basin, left in the world and Richards said they were a vast “storehouse” of biodiversity, with scores of new species found by his Conservation International team. The “very, very beautiful mouse”, the two-centimetre (0.8 inch) longsnouted frog and another with bright yellow spots were among the highlights, but the expedition documented 100 new species in each of the spider and insect orders alone, he said. “I would say that pretty much no matter where you go in New Guinea you’re guaranteed to pick up new or poorly known spectacular species,” said Richards, an expert in
frogs and reptiles who is based in Cairns, Australia. “For some lesser known groups only half of the things that we document actually have names, we aren’t even a fraction of the way there,” he added. The rugged, mountainous and largely inaccessible terrain meant biologists had not even been able to enter some regions and Richards said there were “large areas of New Guinea that are pretty much unexplored biologically”. Sample animals were taken of a number of species, including the mouse, and genetic testing had confirmed that it was not related to any known creature, he said. “These kind of discoveries are almost kind of a good news story amongst all the gloom,” he said, referring to the creeping extinction of other creatures.

LONDON - Liverpool’s board of directors agreed Wednesday to sell the English football giants to the owner of the Boston Red Sox baseball team, despite fierce opposition from the side’s current American owners. The deal with New England Sports Ventures (NESV) is subject to approval by the Premier League and a legal battle with Tom Hicks and George Gillett, who bought the club three years ago and tried to scupper the latest bid. “I am delighted that we have been able to successfully conclude the sale process which has been thorough and extensive,” Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton said in a statement on the club’s website. “The board decided to accept NESV’s proposal on the basis that it best met the criteria we set out originally for a suitable new owner. NESV’s philosophy is all about winning and they have fully demonstrated that at the Red Sox.” Americans Hicks and Gillett were under pressure to sell the five-times European champions with an October 15 deadline for the repayment of their 282-million-pound (448million-dollar) loans from the Royal Bank of Scotland and Wachovia. Liverpool were put up for sale by the unpopular duo in April, who initially sought an asking price of around 800 million pounds, a figure that they subsequently dropped to 600 million. The pair on Tuesday night attempted to remove two senior figures from the club’s board of directors before a meeting to review two
offers, one from NESV and the other reportedly from Asia. Broughton hit out at the pair, saying: “I am only disappointed that the owners have tried everything to prevent the deal from happening and that we need to go through legal proceedings in order to complete the sale.” He said the board had met NESV in Boston, London and Liverpool in recent weeks and he was “immensely impressed with what they have achieved and with their vision for Liverpool Football Club.” “By removing the burden of acquisition debt, this offer allows us to focus on investment in the team,” he added. The statement said, however, that the sale was “conditional on Premier League approval, resolution of the dispute concerning board membership and other matters”. New England Sports Ventures is a group headed by John William Henry II and Tom Werner. Broughton was appointed as independent chairman as part of the sale process in April, meaning Gillett and Hicks no longer had a majority vote and could not prevent any sale that the board
viewed as being in the club’s best interests. The American pair have become increasingly unpopular on Merseyside with supporters blaming the duo for Liverpool’s fall from grace, as the 18-time champions languish in the Premier League relegation zone. In a dramatic twist late Tuesday, Liverpool released an unusual statement saying that Hicks and Gillett had tried to oust managing director Christian Purslow and commercial director Ian Ayre from the board. Hicks wanted to replace them with his son, Mack Hicks, and a close associate Lori Kay McCutcheon. Liverpool, Champions League winners in 2005, have not topped the English league since 1990 and the disappointment of last season’s seventh-place finish has intensified this season. Manager Rafa Benitez’s replacement by Roy Hodgson has failed to lift the team. The Reds exited the League Cup at home to League Two Northampton on penalties before going down 2-1 to newly-promoted Blackpool at Anfield on Sunday amid protests against Hicks and Gillett.

FLORENCE, Italy – Veteran full-back Gianluca Zambrotta has set his sights on reaching 100 Italy caps after being recalled to coach Cesare Prandelli’s squad. The 33year-old AC Milan stalwart’s international career had seemed over after he was overlooked by Prandelli for the coach’s first two squads since taking over from Marcello Lippi following Itay’s World Cup disaster in South Africa. But ahead of Euro 2012 qualifiers against Northern Ireland in Belfast and Serbia in Genoa, Zambrotta, who has 97 caps, has set himself a new target. “At the World Cup I said that I didn’t feel finished. Last Thursday when Prandelli rang me to ask if I was available, I didn’t think about any sort of revenge (for being dropped),” he said Tuesday from Italy’s Coverciano training base. “I simply said yes. I’m not here to take anyone’s place, I didn’t say I’m returning and expecting to play. “But I’m close to 100 appear-
ances and I want to reach it.” Lippi was previously heavily criticised for his over-relience on veteran stars such as Zambrotta who were part of the 2006 World Cupwinning squad. But Prandelli initially rang the changes and blooded several new faces into the Italy setup. He also brought back players like Antonio Cassano from the international wilderness. Cassano missed out on the World Cup as Lippi refused to pick him for two years, but Zambrotta refuted speculation that it was because of veteran players such as himself that the 28-year-old Cassano, a favourite of Prandelli’s, was not offered another chance. “It wasn’t due to us veterans whether or not he went to the World Cup. At the time the question was between him and Lippi,” said Zambrotta. “The problems were between the two of them but now he’s here and I’m happy for that. “It’s true that we don’t have any world class players but Antonio, (Mario) Balotelli and (Andrea) Pirlo prove that Italian football still has some talent.”

LEVERKUSEN - Germany captain Michael Ballack is not expected to play football again in 2010 after it was revealed on Wednesday his knee injury was worse than first thought. The 34-year-old fractured the tibia just below his left knee in a Bundesliga match against Hanover last month, but a further examination has revealed more bad news. The defensive midfielder now needs to wear a protective cast for the next four to six weeks to allow the injury to heal. “The injury is more serious than thought and as a result Michael will be unavailable until the end of the year,” said his club Leverkusen in a statement. Ballack picked up the injury on only his third game back after dam-
aging ligaments in his right ankle last May which kept him out of the World Cup finals. Having spent four years at Chelsea, Ballack returned to the German league this season with Leverkusen, but the latest setback is a blow to both his club coach Jupp Heynckes and national trainer Joachim Loew. “This development is very unfortunate. But I hope that Michael Ballack will return stronger after his rehab and we can focus on his return for the second half of the season,” said Heynckes. With 98 caps to his name, Ballack has already missed Germany’s first two Euro 2012 qualifiers and sits out Friday’s game against Turkey in Berlin and next Tuesday’s match against Kazakhstan in Astana.

MIAMI - LeBron James scored 18 points in a triumphant pre-season debut for the NBA’s Miami Heat on Tuesday but star guard Dwyane Wade suffered a right hamstring strain in a 10589 home victory over Detroit. TOKYO - Dmitry Tursunov held his nerve in the final set to beat Richard Gasquet of France in the second round of the Japan Open tennis tournament on Wednesday. The 27-year-old Russian, who eliminated seventh seed Ernests Gulbis of Latvia on Monday, scored his only break in the seventh game of the decider to win 7-6 (7/2), 1-6, 6-4. “Right now I’m happy, it doesn’t matter how I win. You are always happy if you win,” said Tursunov, who came back to action in May following a long layoff with an ankle injury. After the first set went with serve, Tursunov won the tie-break when Gasquet double-faulted at 2-6 down. Tursunov also hit a double fault — his only one of the match — at the beginning of the third game of the second set, which seemed to turn the momentum in favour of Gasquet. Gasquet won seven straight games to win the second set and lead the final set 1-0 but missed a break chance in the
fourth game as Tursunov fired a forehand winner from the baseline. “In the second set, he just sent me out of the court. I didn’t have too many answers, he was playing fast, he was going for big shots and I was making them,” Tursunov said. “So at the beginning of the third set, I wasn’t too confident in myself winning the match, but a couple of points here and there, he made a couple of easy mistakes. I got a feeling that he was not playing as well (as in the second set),” he added. In the quarter-finals, Tursunov will play either world number one Rafael Nadal of Spain or Milos Raonic of Canada. BOCHUM - Four suspected ringleaders of what is believed to be European football’s biggest fraud scandal went on trial in Germany on Wednesday, accused of fixing more than 30 matches across Europe. The quartet, who have not been named, could be jailed for up to 10 years if found guilty of fraud in a trial that will question the integrity of lower league football across the continent. The trial will focus on 32 games played in Germany, Belgium, Slovenia, Hungary, Croatia and Switzerland, mostly last season, where it is alleged dozens of players or referees were bribed to influence the matches. In total, police have investigated nearly 300 games in 15 countries in a surveillance operation which has spanned the continent. Bets totalling two million euros (2.8 million dollars) are said to have been placed on the matches involved, resulting in winnings in the region of 1.6 million euros. In Germany, the games in question involve a German Cup match, games in the national league’s second division and regional leagues. Most of the matches involved are
from the lower divisions in the respective countries across Europe, but a Europa League and European Under-21 Championships qualifier have also also come under the spotlight. In the Europa League, European football’s second biggest domestic tournament behind the Champions League, a Group E match between FC Basel and CSKA Sofia on November 5, 2009, is un-
der suspicion. And an Under-21 qualifying international between Switzerland and Georgia on November 18, 2009, will also be part of the evidence against the quartet. But the German Football Federation (DFB) look to have had their blushes spared as none of the games in question are in the Bundesliga, Germany’s top domestic league.

Revived Stoner targets three-in-a-row at Sepang Casey Stoner is quietly confident he can make it three MotoGP race wins in a row at Sepang as he looks to build on his current run of good form. The Australian returned to the winners’ circle for the first time this season at Motorland Aragon before going on to reinforce his and Ducati’s return to prominence with a victory in the Japanese Grand Prix. Travelling immediately to Kuala Lumpar and the Malaysian Grand Prix, Stoner is delighted the hard work is beginning pay off now and is feeling good about his chances of completing a hat-trick. “Motegi was our biggest question mark about set up and we had to really work hard to make the bike stable for the really heavy braking,” he said. “Sepang isn’t too much about that, so we can maybe raise the bike back up again and get our traction a little better and see what happens. But we can hopefully expect to have the bike working well there. “We’ve all been giving 120 per cent all season but it’s just these last two races we’re getting something back from it. It’s a huge, huge difference for us. Going into these next two races is a big clump in a small space for us, of course, but if things keep going like they are we definitely have a good chance of doing well again on Sunday”
With Rubens Barrichello having battled to a fine sixth place on the Singapore streets, Michael said the team was heading to Suzuka in confident mood with the top eight positions firmly in its sights. “Suzuka is a high downforce circuit with a figure of eight layout,” he said. “The track has it all, but one of its highlights is the fantastic Esses section. Being able to deliver a strong sector time across that part of the lap is one of the best indicators of a driver’s ability. “Both cars will be running our final upgrade components and we expect to run them all weekend. Our target will be for both FW32s to be fighting for points among the top eight contenders and to therefore be racing for points.” Like many of his rivals, Barrichello said he regarded Suzuka as one of his favourite circuits on the calendar and said he was optimistic of a strong weekend from the team. “I love going to this race, it’s in my top three of all the tracks we visit,” he said. “It’s a big effort to get there, especially from Brazil, but you quickly forget about that when you engage first gear and leave the garage for the first time. Suzuka is a lovely circuit. It’s a very high speed track and has lots of high speed corners. You really have to be on it all the time. “I’m fortunate enough to have raced in Japan since 1993 and it’s wonderful to keep going back. We will have to wait and see how we go but I am optimistic that we can do well again this weekend.”
