Superheroes, for once, don’t rule Hollywood’s summer

NEW YORK — After a lackluster 2014 summer, Hollywood has bounced back with one of its best seasons ever. But the most surprising part of the turnaround is that superheroes aren’t the ones who saved the day. Instead, Hollywood’s summer was led by a banner season from Universal Pictures, the lone major studio with nary a cape in its cupboard. With a record-setting $5.3 billion-plus in revenue so far this year, Universal has powered Hollywood to a near record summer with a diverse string of hits including the season’s top film “Jurassic World” ($1.6 billion worldwide), the top animated hit, “Minions,” and one of the most successful sequels, “Pitch Perfect 2.” After the summer limps to a close over Labor Day weekend, the North American box office will have tallied about $4.4 billion in ticket receipts, according to box office data firm Rentrak. That’s second only to the record $4.75 billion summer of 2013 and an improvement of about 7.5 percent from last summer’s downturn. And the superhero-less Universal led the way. “It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s also an indication that we’re tap-

ping audiences in different ways with the different kind of movies we’re releasing,” says Nick Carpou, distribution head for Universal. “I think our diverse slate doesn’t tend to tire people out.” If superhero domination is slipping at all, it’s not by much. “Avengers: Age of Ultron” was the summer’s second highest grossing film in North America with $457.7 million, and Marvel has already staked out prime summer release dates for years to come, the billions sure to follow. But this was the first summer since the final “Harry Potter” chapter in 2011 that a comic book movie didn’t top all films. “Ant-Man” (seventh place with $170.1 million) was bedeviled by creative differences and fell well short of Marvel’s last irreverent entry, the mammoth summer 2014 hit “Guardians of the Galaxy.” And Fox’s “Fantastic Four,” which the director Josh Trank, himself, suggested was marred by studio overreach, was the biggest superhero debacle in at least a decade. Toll rises to 50 in Malaysian migrant boat accident, survivor found

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysian rescuers have recovered the bodies of 35 more Indonesian migrants killed when their boat sank three days ago, along with another survivor, taking the toll in the disaster to 50, officials said Sunday. The survivor was recovered on Friday afternoon having spent more than a day in the water and was said to be in good health. “Thirty-five more bodies have been recovered since Friday,” said Mohamad Aliyas Hamdan, a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement

Agency official. “We expect to find more over the next few days,” he added. Aliyas said the search operation would continue for the next three days, adding that from information gained from the 20 people rescued, there were believed to

have been up to 80 people on the small vessel. Officials have said the overcrowded wooden boat capsized and sank in rough seas about 16 kilometres (10 miles) off the coast of central Malaysia’s Selangor state before dawn on Thursday. The group were leaving Malaysia to return to Indonesia across the Malacca Strait. Malaysia is Southeast Asia’s third-largest economy and a magnet

for migrant workers from its poorer neighbours, with the vast majority coming from Indonesia. About two million Indonesians are now in Malaysia working a range of low-paid jobs. Deadly accidents in the Strait are not uncommon, however, with travellers typically attempting the crossing in rickety vessels, often at night to avoid detection. In June 2014, more than a dozen people drowned when a boat over-

national percentage, numbers remains comparatively high, the negative impacts of tourism on the nature and culture of Bali is also very high.

In response to this, many people are advising that there be a serious reevaluation of how the tourism sector is managed with some people even

suggesting that there be a moratorium placed on all investments in the tourism sector.

The results of the poll conducted throughout Bali, showed that 64.55 percent of respondents support the move towards re-evaluating tourism. Respondents consider that the growth of tourism in Bali has caused stagnation and spatial mismanagement. The growth of the tourism sector has also coincided with an increase in poverty by as much as 0.04 Percent. Bali can no longer expect that the development of tourism will alleviate poverty given that 50 percent of the profits from this sector leave the island. Moreover, the determination of national tourism strategic areas (KSPN) in Bali and also the Benoa Bay reclamation plan are part of a process that systematically destroys Bali. Given such conditions, the government is advised to prioritize the development of traditional villages and to encourage tourists to visit agro-tourism sites and subak. The poll did show that 34.36 percent of respondents said that a moratorium on tourism and even the restoration of tourism are not necessary. This minority of respondents believe there is still room for expansion or other solutions way that tourism is organize in Bali. Respondents stated that if the revenues from tourism have not been enjoyed by Balinese people, then regulations must be reviewed. Those investing in tourism should be required to empower Balinese human resources. Also those investors who are not willing to accommodate Balinese culture and preserve areas held sacred by Balinese Hindus in the management plans of their tourism investments, should not have their business permits extended. In the future, investment opportunities in the tourism sector must be regulated and monitored in such a way that reduces or prevents collusion between government officials and mischievous investors. Business opportunities for local entrepreneurs also need to be accommodated because if local businesses are squeezed out, Balinese people will be increasingly marginalized leaving no one to preserve Bali. It is impossible for people from outside of Bali come and preserve Bali. For this reason, tourism management policies need to be reviewed. Only 1.09 percent of respondents did not give comments on this matter. Respondents generally expect that the government will control the growth of tourism investments so that agriculture will not be affected any further. The government of Bali must pay attention to the carrying capacity of the island when issuing recommendations for licenses to hotel developers. Besides, the government is also being urged to take immediate action related to the Benoa Bay reclamation plan and the central government is being urged to revoke Besakih Temple and its surroundings from inclusion in the KSPN (national strategic tourism area). resident. Generally they are Indonesian girls. In addition to sharing a room, the girls also serve as tour guides,” said Made Gita, owner of a luxury boarding house in Kuta, on Monday (Aug. 24). According to Gita, as he stated on Monday (Aug 24), compared to staying in a hotel, it is much more economical to stay in a boarding house where it usually costs less than IDR 1 million per month. “I charge IDR 800,000 per month which includes water, though electricity is charged separately,” he explained. Although it is a profitable business, he admitted that that travellers often cause trouble for him. Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) -Bali Chapter, A.A. Ngurah Alit Wiraputra, agreed that the properties that are offered at discounted rates, target backpackers who travel only with a backpack and a small budget. “The presence of boarding houses that operate like hotels is clearly detrimental to tourist businesses and to the government because taxes are not being paid,” he said. Wiraputra said that the existence of boarding house that operate like a hotel offer fantastically cheap prices; in the range of IDR 1 million to IDR 4 million per month. Such practices have a serious impact on the drop in hotel occupancy rates in Badung. “There are in fact more foreigners visiting Bali in terms of numbers, but because of boarding houses, illegal villas, and the ongoing proliferation of new hotels, occupancy rates have dropped,” he said. He added that members of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry -Badung Chapter who are engaged in the hotel sector are heavily burdened by such conditions. Despite the high number of tourist visits, hotel occupancy rates are experiencing a setback. “Occupancy rates now average less than 30 percent, so that revenues generated are not enough to pay employees and cover operational costs,” he complained. For this reason, Wiraputra and others, hope that the government will immediately take decisive measures, before the image of Bali tourism is destroyed by the rampant development of unlicensed accommodations. Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

New finds and old favorites in California’s Napa

NAPA, Calif. — Sunlit hills of lush green vineyards, blue skies, fine red wines: Some things about wine country never change. But others do, like where to eat, stay and play. A decade or so ago, the city of Napa, at the southern end of the valley, was a place you drove through. Now it’s a destination with dozens of restaurants, tasting rooms and revamped or new hotels. Stroll along the riverfront — in the evening when the lights come on is the prettiest time — and check out shops and restaurants like Morimoto Napa (from Masaharu Morimoto of “Iron Chef” fame) which recently added the valley’s first sake lounge. Upvalley there’s Harvest Table, a

new restaurant at Harvest Inn by Charlie Palmer. The menu focuses on local ingredients, including the wines. Recently opened wineries in the valley include Odette Estate, which has an 8,500-square-foot planted living roof and recently opened a new tasting room. (Appointment required.) Raymond Vineyards isn’t new, but it has been completely renovated by new owner Jean-Charles Boisset. Check out the Crystal Cellar with its stainless steel walls, mirrored

bar and collection of Baccarat crystal decanters. The winery tasting room can be visited without an appointment but reservations are recommended and some tastings/ tours require them. Sipping sparkling wine on the terrace at Domaine Carneros has been a favorite Napa “to do” for a quarter-century. Order a plate of cheese and charcuterie, or if you’re feeling flush, try an ounce of caviar ($85). Reservations required. Another good spot for a bite is V. Sattui Winery where

you can pick up cheese, salami, pates, fruit and bread made fresh in the winery’s kitchen daily to assemble an al fresco repast for the winery’s picnic grounds. No outside food allowed. Bistro Don Giovanni is where visitors and locals go to dine; you’ll probably end up sitting next to some of the valley’s movers and shakers although you may not know it. The restaurant has a patio with vineyard views and features refined rustic Italian food. If you’re craving a burger, try Gott’s Roadside in St. Helena, a retro restored drive-in where you can have your burger with a shake or

a bottle of high-end Napa cab. Sterling Winery is a valley standby with a view, where you ride a gondola up to the mountain top winery. Another classic attraction, the Wine Train, recently made headlines when employees booted a book club from the train. Most members of the club were black women, who felt they’d been asked to leave because of their race. Train officials issued an apology. The train makes a threehour round trip from Napa to St. Helena with a meal and stops. Less Expensive

Visiting midweek is always less crowded, and sometimes less expensive, than weekends. Winter is also a more tranquil time, the weather is often mild, and the seasonal menus better pair with the valley’s renowned cabernet wines. Visit in late winter and you’ll be greeted by a golden blaze of wild mustard that acts as a vineyard cover crop. April is arts month, with many of the wineries putting on special exhibitions, and in July there’s Festival del Sole featuring music, dance and more from some of the nation’s top names. To help plan your trip, the Napa Valley Welcome Center at 600 Main St., Napa, is conveniently located on the riverfront and has a concierge to help with bookings and itineraries. For getting around Yountville, St. Helena and Calistoga, check out the shuttles that offer free or low-cost rides including some on-demand pickup. The Oxbow Market is a pleasant place to spend a few hours. You can pick up everything from tacos to oysters and enjoy them on an outdoor deck overlooking the Napa River or browse the specialty gift shops. For upscale dining, stroll the town of Yountville, which has a clutch of high-end restaurants including The French Laundry from chef Thomas Keller. You can also try one of Keller’s more casual restaurants nearby such as Bouchon Bistro or Ad Hoc. For a different type of Napa experience, explore the Coombsville appellation, which is on the southern end of the valley and was recognized as a unique growing area in 2011. This is a place many tourists zoom by, so you’ll find it less crowded. Wineries are smaller and family owned; you may go in for a tasting and find yourself talking to the winemaker him- or herself. DENPASAR - Bali Province will host the National Recreational Sports Festival which is expected to be held on October 9 to 11 by involving around 6,000 participants across the country. General chairman of the Recreational Sports Federation of Indonesian Community (FORMI) Hayono Isman made the remarks, adding the competition will involve 34 sports. To date, 24 out of 34 provinces in Indonesia have confirmed their readiness to participate in the festival. According to him, sports that will be contested will include among others aerobics and stilts. The organizing committee has

sought permission to make use of the field of Puputan Margarana Niti Mandala Renon and Cultural Park in Denpasar as the location for the festival. “ P r e s i d e n t J o k o Wi d o d o (Jokowi) is also expected to inaugurate the opening of the festival on October 10, 2015”, he pointed out. In the meantime, Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika expressed his appreciation over the plan to carry out the recreational festival. (ant)

GIANYAR - Formed in late July 2015, as a result of a broken irrigation channel, the waterfall located in the Kanto Lampo River, Kelod Kangin, Beng village, Gianyar, is more and more frequently visited by local residents and foreign travelers. The 15-meter high waterfall is now expected to become a favoured tourist attraction in eastern Gianyar. Headman of Beng village, Putu Pradana, said that within the past months, following the formation of the waterfall -named after the Kanto Lampo River, is has drawn more and more visitors, especially on the weekend. “Indeed visitors both foreign and domestic, continue to arrive thanks to media coverage and we are running short on parking spaces,” he said. Pradana explained that the 15-meter high waterfall was formed from the subak irrigation flow that broke over the Kanto Lampo River. AMLAPURA - Balinese people have inherited a wide variety of superb arts. However, lately Balinese people seem lazy to work on this art, especially craft art. As a result, only a handful of such crafts products remain.

Chairman of the training committee, Ketut Muka, conveyed that craft art refers to the creation of handicraft. Its form can be a statue, sculpture, woodcarving, relief, handicraft, souvenir, furniture, interior decoration and other accessories. “Since there are a plenty of craft products, teachers should see this area as an wide opportunity and share these skills with their students, in the best possible. Hopefully, after graduating from school, craft art can become an option for them to earn a living,” he said. Craft art is very much dependent on the value of creativity. The more creative, the more valuable the results of the craft art will be. Since Bali is a world tourist destination, craft art has a great opportunity for development here. Muka acknowledged that presently only a few people are interested in learning craft arts at school. Whereas in fact, there is a a market for such products and people who choose to create such products can become quite successful. During the event, the ISI Denpasar presented three speakers: I Made Suparta, I Made Radiawan, and Dr. I Nyoman Suardina. They each presented a different subject matter to the teachers: periodization of craft, craft products and designing a craft product. Head of the Karangasem Education Agency, I Gede Ariyasa, recognized that currently there is very low interest in craft amongst students but explained that this interest is directly related to the way that teachers present the subject to their students. On that account, he said that teacher training needs to be done regularly to encourage teachers to make craft arts exciting. DENPASAR - Of the 639 drug cases in Bali, most of them involved the arrest of users and dealers, while bookies and manufacturers only represent 10 percent of arrests. “So far, the arrest remains at the level of dealers only. The highest percentage is at the level of users but we have rehabilitated them” said the Head of the National Narcotic Agency (BNN) of Bali Province, I Putu Gede Suastawa. Suastawa said that so far he is still reviewing the development and investigation of drug cases. Difficulty in cracking a narcotics case lies in the fact that bookies and dealers operate in disconnected

systems. Very few dealers know who their bookies are because they usually work through a middleman. “Currently, they no longer use telephone operators in Indonesia, but use satellite telephone,” he said. Beijing said the Aug. 11 devaluation was part of efforts aimed at making the yuan’s state-set exchange rate more market-oriented. But coming without warning amid a collapse in Chinese share prices, it caused anxiety in financial markets. Zhou’s comments appeared to be aimed at quelling fears Beijing might allow the currency, also known as the renminbi, to fall further to help its struggling exporters by giving them a price advantage. The devaluation had spurred warnings of a possible “currency war” if other governments responded by lowering their own exchange rates. “At present, the exchange rate of the RMB against the dollar tends to be stable, and most of the correction of the stock market has

Bade and ox sarcophagus paraded in the sea

Ngaben or cremation ceremony held by the Padangbai customary village, Karangasem, on Friday (Sep. 4) took place differently than the usual one. Implementation of the cremation by the family of public figure, Made Suryanatasari, at the village known as the location of the harbor is quite unique. It happens because paraphernalia of the cremation like bade tower and ox sarcophagus are even paraded out to sea before arriving at the local customary graveyard. Before getting to the middle of the sea, the procession of bade tower and ox sarcophagus is started from the three-way intersection at the local village. At the village, the corpse to be cremated is uploaded onto bade tower. After that, people walk hand in hand about 200 meters to the south towards the sea. “This tradition has been going on for generations. Every cremation at this village, the bade and ox sarcophagus are always paraded out to sea,” said secretary of local customary village, Made Nesa. He added that in this cremation ritual, the bade and ox sarcophagus must touch the sea before arriving at cemetery. However, he claimed not to know why they should be paraded out to sea as it is not mentioned in the literature and chronicle of local customary village. When reaching the middle of the sea, people parading the bade and ox sarcophagus revolve both paraphernalia and break through the seawater together while carrying the bade and ox sarcophagus. Accompanied by baleganjur gamelan music, the bade and ox sarcophagus bearers are getting more excited to parade down the sea as far as about 200 meters to the east or toward the cemetery followed by hundreds of residents accompanying from mainland. The procession amid the sea takes place for nearly 45 minutes. The bade and ox sarcophagus are paraded slowly by dozens of people among dozens of traditional boats and speed boats. The procession is becoming a rare spectacle in the cremation ritual in

Bali. As a result, it draws the attention of hundreds to thousands of people and travelers doing activities around the Padangbai Harbor. After the procession in the middle of the sea, the bade and ox sarcophagus are paraded back to shore and then marched to cemetery area. Ox sarcophagus is directly placed at the location having been provided, while the bade remains to be paraded around the location for three times accompanied by baleganjur gamelan music. Nesa added that there are two kinds of cremation organized by local customary village namely the prateka cremation (paraded into the sea) and pranawa cremation (directly paraded to cemetery). However, each cremation ceremony at Padangbai village, the bade and ox sarcophagus are always paraded out to sea. Committee of the cremation ceremony on Friday (Sep. 4), Made Suryanatasari, said there were seven corpses included in the cremation. He also expressed that his party just follows the tradition having been handed down at the village. Chief of Padangbai customary village, Wayan Jandra, when contacted separately on Friday admitted that it has no special meaning. He asserted that the bade and ox sarcophagus are paraded through the sea because he alleged there was no road access to the local cemetery in the past as it is today. So, people must go by sea. BERLIN — Chancellor Angela Merkel planned to discuss Europe’s migrant crisis with her coalition partners Sunday, as Syrians, Iraqis and others fleeing war and persecution streamed into Germany for the second straight day. The Christian Social Union, the socially-conservative wing of Merkel’s center-right bloc, has criticized the decision to open Germany’s borders to migrants and refugees stuck in Hungary, the dpa news agency reported. Meanwhile, the center-left Social Democrats, the third member of Merkel’s three-party coalition, urged swift humanitarian help for those trekking through Europe in search of a better life. “No decent person can remain cold and dismissive in the face of such suffering,” said Thomas Oppermann, a senior Social Democrat. He added that refugees should be fairly distributed in Europe, and countries should not avoid their responsibilities. “Whoever refuses to do their part calls into question whether they can be part of Europe.” German officials have been particularly angry at Hungary for en-

The Dongying city government, which administers the area, said the toll had risen to 13 following the completion of search and rescue efforts Saturday. JAKARTA — Indonesia has dropped its plan to build a high-speed train line and is shifting instead to more economical medium-speed technology, a Cabinet minister said Friday. Coordinating Minister of Economy Darmin Nasution said high-speed service is not suitable for the relatively short distance of 150 kilometers (93 miles) between Jakarta and Bandung, West Java’s provincial capital. “The president’s decision is that we don’t need a high-speed railway. A medium speed of 200 to 250 kilometers per hour is enough,” Nasution said. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, who took office last October, has ambitious plans for improving Indo-

nesia’s infrastructure which he says will boost manufacturing and create hundreds of thousands of new jobs. Nasution said a medium-speed rail system would take only 11 minutes more than a high-speed system to make the trip, while its construction cost would be about 40 percent cheaper. China and Japan had been competing to construct the high-speed rail system, each offering low-interest loans and other perks in an attempt to secure a multibillion-dollar contract. Nasution said a team will create a set of conditions for construction of the medium-speed line before it is opened to international bidding. “We will offer it again to Japan and China, and other countries that have

State Enterprise Minister Rini Soemarno said a consortium made up of four state-owned companies — PT Wijaya Karya, PT Jasa Marga, PT Kereta Api Indonesia, and PT Perkebunan Nusantara VIII — has been set up to conduct a further feasibility study for the project. 6 killed, 2 seriously injured at Spain car rally

MADRID — Police say two people are in serious condition in the hospital and 11 others are receiving treatment after a race car lost control during a rally in northwestern Spain and crashed into onlookers. Six people were killed in Saturday’s accident. A police spokeswoman said four of the dead were female, including a pregnant woman and a 13-year-old. A woman and a young girl were

badly injured and are in an A Coruna hospital. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy tweeted his condolences and said the Coruna Rally had been left in mourning. HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — Former heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs knocked out Mike Marrone in the second round Saturday night. The 43-year-old Briggs (56-6-1, 52 KOs) has eight straight victories since returning to the ring in April 2014 after a four-year absence. He outclassed Marrone (21-6) from the opening seconds of the scheduled 10-round bout at Seminole Hard Rock Live Arena. Late in the first round, Briggs floored Marrone with a right to the head. Utilizing a lead left jab, Briggs continued to back up Marrone and scored with a right to the head and left to the body that sent Marrone to the canvas a second time. Marrone couldn’t beat referee Sam Burgos’ count and the fight was stopped at 2:52.

Briggs took the ring microphone after the fight and challenged current champion Wladimir Klitschko, who sat at ringside. Klitschko and other heavyweight champions of the past 30 years attended the bout. “I’m going to stay busy,” Briggs said. “Hopefully, we come back in three or four months here and do it again.” Other former heavyweight champions who attended the show included Larry Holmes, Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis and Vitali Klitschko, who pummeled Briggs in a 12-round decision in 2010 that resulted in Briggs’ lengthy absence. Briggs won the World Boxing Organization belt in 2006, but lost it in his first defense the following year. Briggs weighed in at 251 pounds, and Marrone at 238. (ap)

6 killed, 2 seriously injured at Spain car rally

MADRID — Police say two people are in serious condition in the hospital and 11 others are receiving treatment after a race car lost control during a rally in northwestern Spain and crashed into onlookers. Six people were killed in Saturday’s accident. A police spokeswoman said four of the dead were female, including a pregnant woman and a 13-year-old. A woman and a young girl were

badly injured and are in an A Coruna hospital. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy tweeted his condolences and said the Coruna Rally had been left in mourning. He wished those injured “a speedy and complete recovery.” Police were investigating the causes of the accident Sunday, the spokeswoman said. Shannon Briggs stops Mike Marrone in 2nd round

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — Former heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs knocked out Mike Marrone in the second round Saturday night. The 43-year-old Briggs (56-6-1, 52 KOs) has eight straight victories since returning to the ring in April 2014 after a four-year absence. He outclassed Marrone (21-6) from the opening seconds of the scheduled 10-round bout at Seminole Hard Rock Live Arena. Late in the first round, Briggs floored Marrone with a right to the head. Utilizing a lead left jab, Briggs continued to back up Marrone and scored with a right to the head and left to the body that sent Marrone to the canvas a second time. Marrone couldn’t beat referee Sam Burgos’ count and the fight was stopped at 2:52.

Briggs took the ring microphone after the fight and challenged current champion Wladimir Klitschko, who sat at ringside. Klitschko and other heavyweight champions of the past 30 years attended the bout. “I’m going to stay busy,” Briggs said. “Hopefully, we come back in three or four months here and do it again.” Other former heavyweight champions who attended the show included Larry Holmes, Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis and Vitali Klitschko, who pummeled Briggs in a 12-round decision in 2010 that resulted in Briggs’ lengthy absence. Briggs won the World Boxing Organization belt in 2006, but lost it in his first defense the following year. Briggs weighed in at 251 pounds, and Marrone at 238. (ap)

Dutch journalist detained while covering clashes in Turkey ANKARA, Turkey — A Dutch journalist says she has been detained by police while covering clashes in a town in Turkey’s mainly Kurdish southeast region. Frederike Geerdink said on her Twitter account Sunday that she was detained in the town of Yusekova and would be questioned by a prosecutor. It was the second time that the freelance journalist, who reports mainly on Kurdish issues, has been

taken into custody in Turkey. She was briefly detained in January and was acquitted of charges of engaging in propaganda on behalf of the Kurdish rebels in April. Merkel to hold crisis talks as migrants stream into Germany

BERLIN — Chancellor Angela Merkel planned to discuss Europe’s migrant crisis with her coalition partners Sunday, as Syrians, Iraqis and others fleeing war and persecution streamed into Germany for the second straight day. The Christian Social Union, the socially-conservative wing of Merkel’s center-right bloc, has criticized the decision to open Germany’s borders to migrants and refugees stuck in Hungary, the dpa news agency reported. Meanwhile, the center-left Social Democrats, the third member of Merkel’s three-party coalition, urged swift humanitarian help for those trekking through Europe in search of a better life. “No decent person can remain cold and dismissive in the face of such suffering,” said Thomas Oppermann, a senior Social Democrat. He added that refugees should be fairly distributed in Europe, and countries should not avoid their responsibilities. “Whoever refuses to do their part calls into question whether they can be part of Europe.” German officials have been particularly angry at Hungary for en-

couraging migrants to keep traveling westward, instead of providing them with adequate shelter and the chance to apply for asylum there. Thousands arrived in Germany by way of Austria by train, bus and car on Saturday. Most went to Munich, the Bavarian capital, where authorities said some 7,000 people were registered and over half received a bed for the night. Special trains also took 570 people to the Thuringian town of Saalfeld. More than half of them were taken onward to Dresden, where a school for German army officers has been cleared to provide temporary shelter for 350 newcomers. Other trains brought migrants to Hamburg in the north and Dortmund in the west of the country, while more than 300 people traveled to the capital Berlin on specially chartered buses. At each stop the migrants were received with cheers, bags of food and toys for the children.

Most Germans have been welcoming of the migrants. But far-right groups have protested their arrival, including in Dortmund overnight. Chancellor Merkel has warned that extremist groups might try to take advantage of the situation to stoke people’s prejudices against refugees. Authorities estimate that up to 800,000 people could apply for asylum in Germany by the end of the year. Germany’s opposition Left Party, meanwhile, said the United States was to blame for the migrant crisis originating in the Middle East because it had indirectly supported terrorist groups in the region. “If the German government had a little bit of courage it would at least ask the United States, as the main cause of the refugee tragedy, to pay some of the costs,” dpa quoted Sahra Wagenknecht, a senior Left Party lawmaker, as saying. BEIJING — The death toll from an explosion at a chemical factory in eastern China last week has jumped to 13 after search and rescue efforts ended, a city government said. A factory that produces adhesive materials exploded on Aug. 31 in Lijin county in Shandong province. Two days after the blast, the official death toll stood at five. The Dongying city government, which administers the area, said the toll had risen to 13 following the completion of search and rescue efforts Saturday. It said all 13 bodies had been identified, but gave no further details. It said 25 other people had been injured, 11 of whom were still hospitalized. A man on duty at the Dongying

Benjamin Netanyahu’s office did say Sunday when the contested legislation will be reversed. The law, passed early Thursday, drew criticism from journalists, who accused the government of trying to stifle dissent. The law said broadcasts should

“avoid one-sidedness, prejudice, expressing personal opinions, giving grades and affixing labels.” The Israel Press Council urged parliament to cancel the law, saying it violates free speech. Following Netanyahu’s about-face, the Cabinet minister who pushed for the legislation resigned from his role overseeing public broadcasting. JAKARTA — Indonesia has dropped its plan to build a high-speed train line and is shifting instead to more economical medium-speed technology, a Cabinet minister said Friday. Coordinating Minister of Economy Darmin Nasution said high-speed service is not suitable for the relatively short distance of 150 kilometers (93 miles) between Jakarta and Bandung, West Java’s provincial capital. “The president’s decision is that we don’t need a high-speed railway. A medium speed of 200 to 250 kilometers per hour is enough,” Nasution said. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, who took office last October, has ambitious plans for improving Indo-

The yuan’s exchange rate against the dollar “tends to be stable,” Zhou Xiaochuan said at a meeting of finance officials of the Group of 20 major economies in Turkey on Friday, according to a central bank statement. Beijing said the Aug. 11 devaluation was part of efforts aimed at making the yuan’s state-set exchange rate more market-oriented. But coming without warning amid a collapse in Chinese share prices, it caused anxiety in financial markets. Zhou’s comments appeared to be aimed at quelling fears Beijing might allow the currency, also known as the renminbi, to fall further to help its struggling exporters by giving them a price advantage. The devaluation had spurred warnings of a possible “currency war” if other governments responded by lowering their own exchange rates. “At present, the exchange rate of the RMB against the dollar tends to be stable, and most of the correction of the stock market has

Bade and ox sarcophagus paraded in the sea

Ngaben or cremation ceremony held by the Padangbai customary village, Karangasem, on Friday (Sep. 4) took place differently than the usual one. Implementation of the cremation by the family of public figure, Made Suryanatasari, at the village known as the location of the harbor is quite unique. It happens because paraphernalia of the cremation like bade tower and ox sarcophagus are even paraded out to sea before arriving at the local customary graveyard. Before getting to the middle of the sea, the procession of bade tower and ox sarcophagus is started from the three-way intersection at the local village. At the village, the corpse to be cremated is uploaded onto bade tower. After that, people walk hand in hand about 200 meters to the south towards the sea. “This tradition has been going on for generations. Every cremation at this village, the bade and ox sarcophagus are always paraded out to sea,” said secretary of local customary village, Made Nesa. He added that in this cremation ritual, the bade and ox sarcophagus must touch the sea before arriving at cemetery. However, he claimed not to know why they should be paraded out to sea as it is not mentioned in the literature and chronicle of local customary village. When reaching the middle of the sea, people parading the bade and ox sarcophagus revolve both paraphernalia and break through the seawater together while carrying the bade and ox sarcophagus. Accompanied by baleganjur gamelan music, the bade and ox sarcophagus bearers are getting more excited to parade down the sea as far as about 200 meters to the east or toward the cemetery followed by hundreds of residents accompanying from mainland. The procession amid the sea takes place for nearly 45 minutes. The bade and ox sarcophagus are paraded slowly by dozens of people among dozens of traditional boats and speed boats. The procession is becoming a rare spectacle in the cremation ritual in

Bali. As a result, it draws the attention of hundreds to thousands of people and travelers doing activities around the Padangbai Harbor. After the procession in the middle of the sea, the bade and ox sarcophagus are paraded back to shore and then marched to cemetery area. Ox sarcophagus is directly placed at the location having been provided, while the bade remains to be paraded around the location for three times accompanied by baleganjur gamelan music. Nesa added that there are two kinds of cremation organized by local customary village namely the prateka cremation (paraded into the sea) and pranawa cremation (directly paraded to cemetery). However, each cremation ceremony at Padangbai village, the bade and ox sarcophagus are always paraded out to sea. Committee of the cremation ceremony on Friday (Sep. 4), Made Suryanatasari, said there were seven corpses included in the cremation. He also expressed that his party just follows the tradition having been handed down at the village. Chief of Padangbai customary village, Wayan Jandra, when contacted separately on Friday admitted that it has no special meaning. He asserted that the bade and ox sarcophagus are paraded through the sea because he alleged there was no road access to the local cemetery in the past as it is today. So, people must go by sea. AMLAPURA - Balinese people have inherited a wide variety of superb arts. However, lately Balinese people seem lazy to work on this art, especially craft art. As a result, only a handful of such crafts products remain.

This fact emerged during a craft art training session organized by the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar, that was given by teachers from throughout Karangasem in the meeting hall of the Karangasem Education Agency. Chairman of the training committee, Ketut Muka, conveyed that craft art refers to the creation of handicraft. Its form can be a statue, sculpture, woodcarving, relief, handicraft, souvenir, furniture, interior decoration and other accessories. “Since there are a plenty of craft products, teachers should see this area as an wide opportunity and share these skills with their students, in the best possible. Hopefully, after graduating from school, craft art can become an option for them to earn a living,” he said. Craft art is very much dependent on the value of creativity. The more creative, the more valuable the results of the craft art will be. Since Bali is a world tourist destination, craft art has a great opportunity for development here. Muka acknowledged that presently only a few people are interested in learning craft arts at school. Whereas in fact, there is a a market for such products and people who choose to create such products can become quite successful. During the event, the ISI Denpasar presented three speakers: I Made Suparta, I Made Radiawan, and Dr. I Nyoman Suardina. They each presented a different subject matter to the teachers: periodization of craft, craft products and designing a craft product. Head of the Karangasem Education Agency, I Gede Ariyasa, recognized that currently there is very low interest in craft amongst students but explained that this interest is directly related to the way that teachers present the subject to their students. On that account, he said that teacher training needs to be done regularly to encourage teachers to make craft arts exciting. Also, with the proper presentation of the subject matter, students can become aware that craft represents a job opportinutiy for them after graduation. “Teachers of craft art should be provided with greater insight, so that it can be passed on to students,” he said. Guatemala voters choose new president amid fraud scandal

GUATEMALA CITY — An uncomfortable challenge confronts Guatemala’s presidential candidates on Sunday: trying to win the votes of a nation that has put the last elected leader in court custody. Most are old-guard candidates picked to run before energized prosecutors backed by a mass anti-corruption movement toppled the previous administration. Many voters are so skeptical that they campaigned for the election itself to be postponed to give them a new crop of choices. Both are currently in custody, accused of being involved in a customs kickback scheme. Activists are urging voters to go to the polls wearing black clothes of mourning, abstain or cast null ballots. On the streets, it’s hard to find a campaign poster that hasn’t been covered with insults. Tens of thousands had joined demonstrations asking for the vote to be

postponed. Baldizon, who finished second in the last presidential race, initially campaigned on the slogan “It’s his turn” — a reference to the fact that the last four elections have been won by the previous runner-up. At protests, demonstrators have chanted: “It’s not your turn.” Baldizon has acknowledged Guatemalans’ disgust with crime, corruption and impunity. But after Baldizon’s campaign blew past the legal ceiling on electoral costs, he ignored orders to stop spending. Morales, 46, boasts of his outsider status and says he is part of the uprising against corruption. He has promised greater transparency, including media review of government contracts. Torres, 59, divorced former President Alvaro Colom ahead of the last presidential race to try to get around rules barring presidential relatives from running, but was still ruled ineligible. A businesswoman and longtime political party figure, she is proposing a coalition government to respond to the concerns of outraged citizens. Rios, 47, is the daughter of former dictator Efrain Rios Montt, who faces charges of crimes against humanity for killings by security forces during his 1982-83 regime. Of the 639 drug arrests, almost all are users and dealers

DENPASAR - Of the 639 drug cases in Bali, most of them involved the arrest of users and dealers, while bookies and manufacturers only represent 10 percent of arrests. “So far, the arrest remains at the level of dealers only. The highest percentage is at the level of users but we have rehabilitated them” said the Head of the National Narcotic Agency (BNN) of Bali Province, I Putu Gede Suastawa. Suastawa said that so far he is still reviewing the development and investigation of drug cases. Difficulty in cracking a narcotics case lies in the fact that bookies and dealers operate in disconnected

systems. Very few dealers know who their bookies are because they usually work through a middleman. “Currently, they no longer use telephone operators in Indonesia, but use satellite telephone,” he said. Satellite telephones make it very difficult to locate bookies. Nevertheless, his party has set up a technology that can record satellite telephone. calls. “It is very difficult for police authority. But, now we have such device, so, it is just a matter of time. Hopefully, both dealers and their bookies can be discovered,” he said. Dealers also have a special strat-

ment had previously said elections could take place late next year. “The army has been uncommitted from the beginning of the process, but it’s quite significant to have a rejection at this stage rather than a rejection at the referendum,” said Ambika Ahuja, an analyst for the Eurasia Group political risk firm. “Now it’s become even more clear that the current regime prefers to drag on the status quo of direct military rule rather than risk going to the polls earlier, even with a constitution that would give the military a lot of power,” she said. One of the most contentious provisions in the draft included a 23-member panel, including military members, that would be empowered to take over from the parliament and prime minister in times of “national crisis.” Almost all parties criticized it, and the draft risked being voted

New finds and old favorites in California’s Napa

NAPA, Calif. — Sunlit hills of lush green vineyards, blue skies, fine red wines: Some things about wine country never change. But others do, like where to eat, stay and play. A decade or so ago, the city of Napa, at the southern end of the valley, was a place you drove through. Now it’s a destination with dozens of restaurants, tasting rooms and revamped or new hotels. Stroll along the riverfront — in the evening when the lights come on is the prettiest time — and check out shops and restaurants like Morimoto Napa (from Masaharu Morimoto of “Iron Chef” fame) which recently added the valley’s first sake lounge. Upvalley there’s Harvest Table, a

new restaurant at Harvest Inn by Charlie Palmer. The menu focuses on local ingredients, including the wines. Recently opened wineries in the valley include Odette Estate, which has an 8,500-square-foot planted living roof and recently opened a new tasting room. (Appointment required.) Raymond Vineyards isn’t new, but it has been completely renovated by new owner Jean-Charles Boisset. Check out the Crystal Cellar with its stainless steel walls, mirrored

bar and collection of Baccarat crystal decanters. The winery tasting room can be visited without an appointment but reservations are recommended and some tastings/ tours require them. Sipping sparkling wine on the terrace at Domaine Carneros has been a favorite Napa “to do” for a quarter-century. Order a plate of cheese and charcuterie, or if you’re feeling flush, try an ounce of caviar ($85). Reservations required. Another good spot for a bite is V. Sattui Winery where

you can pick up cheese, salami, pates, fruit and bread made fresh in the winery’s kitchen daily to assemble an al fresco repast for the winery’s picnic grounds. No outside food allowed. Bistro Don Giovanni is where visitors and locals go to dine; you’ll probably end up sitting next to some of the valley’s movers and shakers although you may not know it. The restaurant has a patio with vineyard views and features refined rustic Italian food. If you’re craving a burger, try Gott’s Roadside in St. Helena, a retro restored drive-in where you can have your burger with a shake or

Visiting midweek is always less crowded, and sometimes less expensive, than weekends. Winter is also a more tranquil time, the weather is often mild, and the seasonal menus better pair with the valley’s renowned cabernet wines. Visit in late winter and you’ll be greeted by a golden blaze of wild mustard that acts as a vineyard cover crop. April is arts month, with many of the wineries putting on special exhibitions, and in July there’s Festival del Sole featuring music, dance and more from some of the nation’s top names. To help plan your trip, the Napa Valley Welcome Center at 600 Main St., Napa, is conveniently located on the riverfront and has a concierge to help with bookings and itineraries. For getting around Yountville, St. Helena and Calistoga, check out the shuttles that offer free or low-cost rides including some on-demand pickup. The Oxbow Market is a pleasant place to spend a few hours. You can pick up everything from tacos to oysters and enjoy them on an outdoor deck overlooking the Napa River or browse the specialty gift shops. For upscale dining, stroll the town of Yountville, which has a clutch of high-end restaurants including The French Laundry from chef Thomas Keller. You can also try one of Keller’s more casual restaurants nearby such as Bouchon Bistro or Ad Hoc. For a different type of Napa experience, explore the Coombsville appellation, which is on the southern end of the valley and was recognized as a unique growing area in 2011. This is a place many tourists zoom by, so you’ll find it less crowded. Wineries are smaller and family owned; you may go in for a tasting and find yourself talking to the winemaker him- or herself. GIANYAR - Formed in late July 2015, as a result of a broken irrigation channel, the waterfall located in the Kanto Lampo River, Kelod Kangin, Beng village, Gianyar, is more and more frequently visited by local residents and foreign travelers. The 15-meter high waterfall is now expected to become a favoured tourist attraction in eastern Gianyar. Headman of Beng village, Putu Pradana, said that within the past months, following the formation of the waterfall -named after the Kanto Lampo River, is has drawn more and more visitors, especially on the weekend. “Indeed visitors both foreign and domestic, continue to arrive thanks to media coverage and we are running short on parking spaces,” he said. Pradana explained that the 15-meter high waterfall was formed from the subak irrigation flow that broke over the Kanto Lampo River. This waterfall looks very exotic because the water flows over a cliff that was previously a rock excavation site. “Formerly, the rock face was being excavated, so that the ridge has a nice cut shape, under the waterfall,” he explained. The collapse of the subak irrigation channel shocked many residents because and it was feared to that the break would interfere with the flow of water to local farmers’ paddy fields But, Putu Pradana assured them that there is still enough water in the irrigation channel. “Until now, there is no problem related to the breakdown of this irrigation channel because the water flow is quite large,” he said. He added that so far thousands of visitors from outside Gianyar come to visit the waterfall adjacent to Kanto Lampo spring or beji. However, the road access ends at the beji of Kanto Lampo. To get to the waterfall, visitors must pass through a walkway and climb down the rocks. Dozens of youths from Beng village are always on guard at the waterfall to guide visitors. There is a donation box at the entrance to the waterfalls so visors can sincerely donate any amount they feel to. “The water fall is about 10 meters from the Beji Temple. Many youths from Kelod Kangin hamlet are ready to serve visitors,” he said. (kmb35)

The results of the poll conducted throughout Bali, showed that 64.55 percent of respondents support the move towards re-evaluating tourism. Respondents consider that the growth of tourism in Bali has caused stagnation and spatial mismanagement. The growth of the tourism sector has also coincided with an increase in poverty by as much as 0.04 Percent. Bali can no longer expect that the development of tourism will alleviate poverty given that 50 percent of the profits from this sector leave the island. Moreover, the determination of national tourism strategic areas (KSPN) in Bali and also the Benoa Bay reclamation plan are part of a process that systematically destroys Bali. Given such conditions, the government is advised to prioritize the development of traditional villages and to encourage tourists to visit agro-tourism sites and subak. The poll did show that 34.36 percent of respondents said that a moratorium on tourism and even the restoration of tourism are not necessary. This minority of respondents believe there is still room for expansion or other solutions way that tourism is organize in Bali. Respondents stated that if the revenues from tourism have not been enjoyed by Balinese people, then regulations must be reviewed. Those investing in tourism should be required to empower Balinese human resources. Also those investors who are not willing to accommodate Balinese culture and preserve areas held sacred by Balinese Hindus in the management plans of their tourism investments, should not have their business permits extended. In the future, investment opportunities in the tourism sector must be regulated and monitored in such a way that reduces or prevents collusion between government officials and mischievous investors. Business opportunities for local entrepreneurs also need to be accommodated because if local businesses are squeezed out, Balinese people will be increasingly marginalized leaving no one to preserve Bali. It is impossible for people from outside of Bali come and preserve Bali. For this reason, tourism management policies need to be reviewed. Only 1.09 percent of respondents did not give comments on this matter. Respondents generally expect that the government will control the growth of tourism investments so that agriculture will not be affected any further. The government of Bali must pay attention to the carrying capacity of the island when issuing recommendations for licenses to hotel developers. Besides, the government is also being urged to take immediate action related to the Benoa Bay reclamation plan and the central government is being urged to revoke Besakih Temple and its surroundings from inclusion in the KSPN (national strategic tourism area). resident. Generally they are Indonesian girls. In addition to sharing a room, the girls also serve as tour guides,” said Made Gita, owner of a luxury boarding house in Kuta, on Monday (Aug. 24). According to Gita, as he stated on Monday (Aug 24), compared to staying in a hotel, it is much more economical to stay in a boarding house where it usually costs less than IDR 1 million per month. “I charge IDR 800,000 per month which includes water, though electricity is charged separately,” he explained. Ngurah Alit Wiraputra, agreed that the properties that are offered at discounted rates, target backpackers who travel only with a backpack and a small budget. “The presence of boarding houses that operate like hotels is clearly detrimental to tourist businesses and to the government because taxes are not being paid,” he said. Wiraputra said that the existence of boarding house that operate like a hotel offer fantastically cheap prices; in the range of IDR 1 million to IDR 4 million per month. Such practices have a serious impact on the drop in hotel occupancy rates in Badung. “There are in fact more foreigners visiting Bali in terms of numbers, but because of boarding houses, illegal villas, and the ongoing proliferation of new hotels, occupancy rates have dropped,” he said. He added that members of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry -Badung Chapter who are engaged in the hotel sector are heavily burdened by such conditions. Despite the high number of tourist visits, hotel occupancy rates are experiencing a setback. “Occupancy rates now average less than 30 percent, so that revenues generated are not enough to pay employees and cover operational costs,” he complained. For this reason, Wiraputra and others, hope that the government will immediately take decisive measures, before the image of Bali tourism is destroyed by the rampant development of unlicensed accommodations. Balinese Temple Ceremony

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Superheroes, for once, don’t rule Hollywood’s summer

NEW YORK — After a lackluster 2014 summer, Hollywood has bounced back with one of its best seasons ever. But the most surprising part of the turnaround is that superheroes aren’t the ones who saved the day. Instead, Hollywood’s summer was led by a banner season from Universal Pictures, the lone major studio with nary a cape in its cupboard. With a record-setting $5.3 billion-plus in revenue so far this year, Universal has powered Hollywood to a near record summer with a diverse string of hits including the season’s top film “Jurassic World” ($1.6 billion worldwide), the top animated hit, “Minions,” and one of the most successful sequels, “Pitch Perfect 2.” After the summer limps to a close over Labor Day weekend, the North American box office will have tallied about $4.4 billion in ticket receipts, according to box office data firm Rentrak. That’s second only to the record $4.75 billion summer of 2013 and an improvement of about 7.5 percent from last summer’s downturn. And the superhero-less Universal led the way. “It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s also an indication that we’re tap-

Toll rises to 50 in Malaysian migrant boat accident, survivor found

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysian rescuers have recovered the bodies of 35 more Indonesian migrants killed when their boat sank three days ago, along with another survivor, taking the toll in the disaster to 50, officials said Sunday. The survivor was recovered on Friday afternoon having spent more than a day in the water and was said to be in good health. “Thirty-five more bodies have been recovered since Friday,” said Mohamad Aliyas Hamdan, a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement

have been up to 80 people on the small vessel. national percentage, numbers remains comparatively high, the negative impacts of tourism on the nature and culture of Bali is also very high.

In response to this, many people are advising that there be a serious reevaluation of how the tourism sector is managed with some people even

suggesting that there be a moratorium placed on all investments in the tourism sector.
