LOS ANGELES - A Los Angeles man is seeking damages from the estate of Michael Jackson, alleging that the late “King of Pop” sexually abused him as a child during the late 1980s, court documents show. James Safechuck, 36, said Jackson abused him on about 100 occasions over a four-year period after the two appeared in a Pepsi commercial when he was 10years-old. Filings by Safechuck’s attorneys alleged that Jackson, who died in 2009, “brainwashed” the youngster into believing the abuses were “acts of love.” The documents said Safechuck regularly shared Jackson’s bed during the singer’s “Bad” tour in 1988. Safechuck
said the abuse continued until he reached puberty. A hearing has been scheduled in Los Angeles for September 4 before judge Mitchell Beckloff. Howard Weitzman, a lawyer for the Jackson estate, said Safechuck’s claims should be dismissed. “Mr Safechuck’s request to file a late claim against the Jackson Estate so he can recover money from Michael’s beneficiary will hopefully be rejected,” Weitzman said.
“This is a person that made his claim five years after Michael died, more than 20 years after the incidents supposedly happened and has given sworn testimony that Michael never did anything inappropriate to him.” Last year, a 31-year-old Australian, Wade Robson, launched a similar claim on Jackson’s estate, alleging he was abused by the singer as a child. Jackson, who died on June 25 2009 after being given an overdose of the anesthetic propofol, faced multiple allegations of child sex abuse during his lifetime. He was acquitted of abuse at a 2005 trial in California and paid a $15 million court settlement in 1994 over allegations involving another child.

In a fiery speech at the Constitutional Court, Prabowo lashed out at the “dishonesty and injustice” of the poll -- which he lost to Joko Widodo -- and compared politics in the world’s third-biggest democracy to Stalinist North Korea. Widodo, a former furniture exporter known by his nickname Jokowi, won legions of fans with
his down-to-earth style as Jakarta governor and is the country’s first leader from outside the political and military elites. Prabowo, a controversial former military figure with roots in the era of dictator Suharto, also declared victory at the July 9 presidential election, but official results two weeks later confirmed Widodo won
a decisive victory. However, the ex-general -- who has been seeking the presidency for a decade -- has still refused to accept the results. His team has filed a lengthy complaint against the election commission with the Constitutional Court in the capital Jakarta, which rules on poll disputes. They claim he is the true winner of the election, that fraud occurred at tens of thousands of polling stations, and that election officials failed to order recounts in numerous places where they should have. While the challenge is widely
expected to fail, it has nevertheless dragged out the lengthy election process for a few more weeks. The court must issue a ruling by August 21, which cannot be appealed.

While there were some instances of vote fraud during the election, most analysts consider the country’s third direct presidential election since the end of authoritarian rule in 1998 to have been free and fair. Prabowo said he was seeking “justice for the Indonesian people”. “If justice cannot be served, we are very, very worried for the future of Indonesia’s democracy, Indonesia’s people,” he added. Such archive warehouse building will be used for the long-term need. He said some important things tendered were such as cupboard made from waterproof, fireresistant and durable materials. Then, it should be equipped with air-conditioning and several other supporting infrastructures. Expenditure of fund for the procurement of the archive building
reached IDR 2 billion. “In the meantime, the results of the tender almost reached IDR 668 million for the facilities of cupboard. Suadnyana added the archive building completion was targeted to complete at the latest 3 months, starting from July to October this year. It would be converted into an archive building. “The building is permanent. It is no longer an archive warehouse, but an archive building. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

PARIS - Daily, long-term doses of aspirin can slash the risk of cancer of the digestive tract, according to an overview of research published on Wednesday. Aspirin greatly reduces the risk of developing and dying from bowel, stomach and oesophageal cancer, its authors said. They found that taking aspirin for 10 years could cut bowel cancer cases by around 35 percent and deaths by 40 percent. Rates of oesophageal and stomach cancers were cut by 30 percent and deaths from these cancers by 35-50 percent. To gain these benefits meant people had to start taking a daily dose of 75-100 mg for at least five years and probably 10 years between the ages of 50 and 65. No benefit was seen while they took aspirin for the first three years, and death rates were only reduced after five years. Aspirin has long been considered to be a boost in the fight against cardiovascular disease and has also been investigated for reputed anti-cancer effects. This is the first to throw up broad evidence that it can be a shield against these types of cancer, the scientists said. The study, published in the European cancer journal Annals of Oncology, was led by Jack Cuzick, a professor at the the Centre for Cancer Prevention at Queen Mary University of London. It looked at more than 200 clinical trials and other studies that explored aspirin’s anti-cancer effects. “Our study shows that if everyone aged between 50-65 started taking as-

pirin daily for at least 10 years, there would be a nine-percent reduction in the number of cancers, strokes and heart attacks overall in men and around seven percent in women,” Cuzick said in a press release. “The total number of deaths from any cause would also be lower, by about four percent over a 20-year period. The benefits of aspirin use would be most visible in the reduction in deaths due to cancer.” The research said there was a downside to taking daily doses of aspirin -- potential side-effects such as peptic ulcers and bleeding in the digestive tract. In a very small number of elderly people, the bleeding could be life-threatening. It said further work was needed to see who would benefit most from taking aspirin and determining the right dose to maximise the protective effect. “It has long been known that aspirin - one of the cheapest and most common drugs on the market - can protect against certain types of cancer,” Cuzick said. “But until our study, where we analysed all the available evidence, it was unclear whether the pros of taking aspirin outweighed the cons.” Cuzick added: “Whilst there are some serious side effects that can’t be ignored, taking aspirin daily looks to be the most important thing we can do to reduce cancer after stopping smoking and reducing obesity, and will probably be much easier to implement.”
Experimental Ebola drug is hard to make

WASHINGTON - An experimental drug given to two American patients with Ebola is made from tobacco leaves and is hard to produce on a large scale, a leading US doctor said Tuesday. Known as ZMapp, the serum consists of three antibodies manufactured in modified tobacco leaves, which take weeks to grow. It was reportedly rushed to US missionaries Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol, who were stricken with Ebola while treating patients in Liberia. Both have shown improvements in their health and are now being treated in isolation at an Atlanta, Georgia hospital. “We cannot say right now that
this drug is particularly promising,” said Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases. “The animal data are very good and the use of it in the two patients is suggestive that it may have a favorable effect, but since there are only two patients I think you have to be careful about making any definitive decision,” he told AFP. There is no drug or vaccine on the market against Ebola virus, which causes fever, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle aches and sometimes organ failure and hemorrhaging. The ongoing outbreak in West Africa is the largest in history, having killed 887 of the more than 1,600 infected. As for ZMapp, which was first identified as a drug candidate in
January, there have been no safety tests yet in humans. “As such, very little of the drug is currently available,” the company said in a statement, adding that is working to scale up production as soon as possible. ZMapp is a project of Mapp Biopharmaceutical, Inc. and LeafBio in San Diego, California, Defyrus Inc. in Toronto, Canada, the US government and the Public Health Agency of Canada. Fauci said that the process of scaling up production will take time. “It is going to take several months to get even a modest amount,” he said. “So yes, we do want to do clinical trials but the limiting factor is the number of treatment courses that are available.”

DENPASAR - Pertamina Marketing Operation for Region V has made a restriction to the service time of subsidized diesel fuel at eight petrol stations in Denpasar in accordance with the provisions. At the moment, the total number of petrol station in East Java reached 835 retail outlets and 180 retail outlets in Bali. Assistant Manager of External Relations of Marketing Operation Region V, Heppy Wulansari, said such restriction was in appropriate with the Government Instruction through the circular of the Downstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Agency (BPH Migas) regarding the control of Specific Fuel in 2014. “Such policy also applies at 42 petrol stations in East Java. Thus, with the policy, the 50 petrol stations only serve the purchase of subsidized diesel fuel at 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. local time,” said Heppy Wulansari. According to him, the public could identify petrol stations imposed with time restriction through stickers, posters and banners installed in the station area. To anticipate the needs of consumers who made purchase of diesel fuel beyond the time restriction, Pertamina increased the availability of Pertamina Dex and non-subsidized diesel fuel at the 50 petrol stations. “Eight petrol stations imposed with such policies include the petrol stations located on Jalan Hayam Wuruk, Gunung Sanghyang, Sesetan, Raya Puputan, Ahmad Yani, Pulau Bungin and Jalan Buana Raya,” she explained. On the other hand, the restriction to diesel fuel would become a
burden to PLN because most of the power plants in Bali depended on such fuel. The letter of Pertamina dated July 25, 2014 carried that Pertamina planned to diminish the fuel supply to PLN by 50 percent. “If it is diminished, it will certainly have an impact on the PLN because many power plants use diesel fuel. We do hope the discussion can reach an appropriate or win-win solution for both parties for the sake of people of Indonesia,” said General Manager of PT PLN Bali, Syamsul Huda. Even though the PLN did not use subsidized fuel, he said the restriction of supply would have an impact on the PLN in the region that mostly still used diesel fuel. “Moreover, many power plants in Bali are still using diesel fuel. At the moment, the electricity of Bali is still dependent on Java,” he said. He hoped the Celukan Bawang power plant could soon be operated, so that the burden in Bali, chiefly South Bali, could be covered in whole. Celukan Bawang power plant produced 130 MW, but it could not be fully in operation because it still had a land problem for the development of high-voltage transmission lines along the Celukan Bawang (Buleleng) to Kapal (Badung). DENPASAR - Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali released the economy of Bali until the first half of 2014 that grew by 5.75 percent. This growth nearly happened in all sectors, except for quarry and construction sector with respective contraction of 4.06 percent and 2.79 percent. Nevertheless, when compared to the growth in the first half of 2013, the growth in this semester tended to slow down where the previous year’s economic growth reached 6.38 percent. The Head of BPS Bali, Panusunan Siregar, explained the eco-
nomic growth of Bali in the first half of 2014 was driven by the growth in the service sector by 8.68 percent, financial sector (8.66 percent), trade, hotel and restaurant (7.47 percent), industry (7.16 percent), transport (6.63 percent), electricity, gas and water supply (5.03 percent) and agriculture (0.50 percent). “The slowdown occurred due to a sharp decline in the construction and quarry sector where in the first half of 2013 the construction sector grew by 16.05 percent, but the first half of 2014 experienced a contraction of 2.79 percent,” said Panusunan Siregar.
Similarly, in the first half of 2013 the quarry sector grew by 14.07 percent, while in first half of 2014 it showed a contraction of 4.06 percent. In quarter-to-quarter basis, the performance of Bali’s economy in the second quarter increased by 2.80 percent when compared to the previous quarter. The increase occurred in all economic sectors. “The agricultural sector in the second quarter of 2014 grew by 2.84 percent (q-to-q), after contracting in the first quarter of 2014 by 2.84 percent,” he explained. He presented the economic growth in the second quarter of
2014 was driven by all subsectors, namely the livestock sub-sector grew by 4.45 percent, plantation subsector (3.68 percent), forestry subsector (3.25 percent), food crops subsector (2.48 percent) and fisheries subsector (1.42 percent). Meanwhile, quarry sector grew by 3.96 percent after contracting in the first quarter of 2014 by 5.73 percent. Processing industry sector grew by 1.49 percent (q-to-q) driven by the increase in subsectors of food, beverage and tobacco growing by 2.24 percent. Electricity, gas and water sector achieved the highest growth at 4.94 percent, but contracted in the previous quarter by 0.58 percent.
Construction sector grew by 1.81 percent, while trade, hotel and restaurant grew by 4.20 percent. The growth of trade, hotel and restaurant sector was driven by the increasing number of foreign travelers visiting Bali accounting for approximately 7 percent compared to the previous quarter. “It is also discernible from the increase in hotel room occupancy rate which accounted for approximately 3 percent. Implementation of religious holidays, school holiday season and the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) have also encouraged the increase in the sector,” he concluded. (kmb27)

A Brazilian citizen and dealer arrested DENPASAR - The Denpasar Police Narcotics Unit arrested a Brazilian citizen with initials GHVM, 33, on Jalan Soputan, Denpasar. In addition, a dealer of crystal meth and ecstasy, Ni Putu Yantini, 38, was arrested at her boarding house at Sari Tegeh hamlet, Tonja, Denpasar, Friday (Aug 1). A police source mentioned if the culprit was the target of operation (TO) of the Denpasar Police Narcotics Unit for a long time. The man staying at Van Mandiri Guest House on Jalan Tegal Cupek, Kerobokan Kelod, North Kuta, Badung, was reported to frequently use drugs with her friends. “The investigating officers received information if GHVM was carrying drugs,” said the source. Police officers hunting GHVM then saw the culprit passing while driving Toyota Avanza vehicle with license plate DK 1521 FD on Jalan Gunung Soputan, Friday afternoon around 1:45. Police then stopped
the vehicle of GHVM. From the results of search, the officers found a box of candy containing a bundle of hashish weighing 0.13 gram, 0.14 gram of marijuana, bongs, electronic scale and equipment to use other drugs. “Initially, this Brazilian fought back, but when searched he only bowed his head,” he said. A few hours later, the Denpasar Police Narcotics Unit also arrested a woman, Ni Putu Yantini, 38, in her boarding house at Sari Tegeh hamlet, Tonja, Denpasar on Friday afternoon around 2:00 o’clock. From her hand, police secured evidence in the form of 10.41 grams of crystal meth and two pieces of ecstasy weighing 0.57 gram. “Yantini is a dealer of crystal meth and ecstasy,” he said. The Yunnan provincial government said more than 2,400 people were injured in Sunday’s 6.1 magnitude quake in the mountainous Yunnan farming region of Ludian county — the country’s deadliest temblor in four years. At a makeshift headquarters in the forecourt of a cracked middle school in the worst-hit town of Longtoushan, a senior colonel in the People’s Liberation Army said there might still be hope to find survivors. “There are a lot of people that we may never be able to dig out,” said senior Col. Feng, who declined to give his full name because he was not an officially designated spokesman. “But there is still hope.” Wednesday’s big jump in the death toll — up from 410 on Tuesday — was due to rescuers arriving in places where they had previously been unable to contact anybody, in small farming villages built into the mountains above the main towns,

Thousands of troops and hundreds of volunteers have rushed to Ludian to dig out possible survivors from the debris, but landslides and bouts of heavy rains have complicated rescue efforts. The quake struck an area of steep hills and narrow roads that are not well suited to all the traffic of the massive relief effort. Landslides have shorn shear rocky faces into the region’s valleys. The weather was clear Wednesday and the roads into Longtoushan were clogged with rescue vehicles, ambulances and military jeeps along with residents and volunteers on foot. The region is prone to earthquakes. In 1970, a magnitude-7.7 earthquake in Yunnan killed at least 15,000 people. In September 2012, a series of quakes killed 81 people. In May 2008, a powerful quake in Sichuan province left nearly 90,000 people dead.

NEGARA - Three illegal loggers committing crimes in the forest of Medewi, Pekutatan, were arrested, Saturday afternoon (Aug 2). The three culprits including Nyoman Teken, 49, Ketut Warken, 43, and Nengah Suwandra, 41, living at Dauh Pangkung Selepa hamlet, Medewi village, kept the timber in the forest. The arrest began from public information where there was logging activity in the forest. Police then conducted an investigation and found some wooden logs at the house of Nyoman Teken, one of the suspects. A dozen of rosewood logs were put in the back of his house. The logs had been cut to various sizes and were covered with palm leaves. Once checked, there were totally 49 logs and a chainsaw. After that, police conducted a development. Based on recognition of the suspect, there were several other culprits and belonged to his relatives. HANOI — North Korea’s foreign minister held talks in Vietnam on Wednesday in a visit to a fellow communist country as part of efforts to break the North’s diplomatic isolation. Ri Su Yong arrived Tuesday night from Laos for a four-day visit before traveling to Myanmar for an ASEAN Regional Forum meeting, which will also be attended by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and foreign ministers from Japan, South Korea and China on Sunday. He then visits Indonesia and Singapore. Ri held talks with his Vietnamese counterpart Pham Binh Minh where they stressed on the traditional friendship between communist countries. Ri will also meet President Truong Tan Sang and other highranking officials. “My visit to Vietnam this time is to develop the existing friendship between our two countries,” Ri told Minh at the start of their talks. “Our relationship is a comradely and fraternal one and unlike other countries it has an age-old history.” Unlike Vietnam, which launched reforms in the mid-1980s opening up to foreign trade and investment, North Korea remains one of the world’s most isolated countries over its nuclear weapon program. US companies falling behind as Africa surges

WASHINGTON — As Africa’s economy rises, American businesses are at risk of being left behind. “We are missing the boat” was the sour warning former President Bill Clinton issued Tuesday at an otherwise upbeat U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit here. Sub-Saharan Africa has enjoyed nearly 6 percent annual economic growth for the past decade. And the robust expansion is expected to endure through the decade. Ernst & Young calls Africa the world’s second-most attractive market for investment behind North America. Yet as Africa gains momentum, U.S. business activity there has all but stalled. U.S. direct investment in Africa essentially flat-lined between 2010 and 2012, according to United Nations numbers crunched by the Brookings Institution. Over the same period, China (with investment up 68 percent) and the European Union (up 8 percent) poured money into a region they see as rich with natural resources and economic potential. U.S. corporate profits in Africa fell in 2013 for a second straight year. “We have some catching up to do,” former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Tuesday. “We are letting Europe and China go faster than us.” Africa specialists complain that many American individuals and companies hold an outdated view of the region as a war-ridden disaster zone. “It perhaps collects more eyeballs and sells more newspapers to talk about conflicts and war and famine,” said Paul Sullivan, director of international business development at Acrow Bridge, a New Jersey firm that builds bridges in Africa. “There’s a real perception deficit
on the part of Western thinkers, particularly in the United States.” Jennifer Cooke, director of the Africa program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, argues: “Generally, the U.S. private sector has been risk-averse. There’s easier territory than Africa.” Chinese companies, by contrast, seem to be everywhere in Africa. The off-shore oil company CNOOC has invested $2 billion in a Ugandan oil field. Chinese operate supermarkets and mines. A Chinese construction company is building Uganda’s first expressway with a loan from Chinese bank. Some African leaders say the Chinese are more attuned than Americans to the region’s norms and sensibilities. Critics counter that a more decisive factor is that Chinese companies aren’t put off by bribes and kickbacks, while American firms must comply with a U.S. anti-corruption law. “Chinese companies are thus beating out U.S. firms, contributing to the rapid ascendancy of China on the African continent,” says Andy Spalding, who studies corruption at the University of Richmond School of Law. China’s growing influence, he says, is “exacerbating Africa’s corruption problem.” In what sounded like a dig at China, Vice President Joe Biden noted at the summit that it’s hard to compete for business fairly “when others cut corners.”

Cease-fire in Gaza holds for second day Associated Press
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip — A cease-fire between Israel and Hamas that ended a month of war was holding for a second day Wednesday, ahead of negotiations in Cairo on a long-term truce and a broader deal for the war-ravaged Gaza Strip. In the coming days, Egyptian mediators are to shuttle between delegations from both sides to try to work out a deal. The Palestinian delegation is composed of negotiators from all major factions, including Hamas, the Islamic militant group that controls Gaza. Names of those in the Israeli team have not been disclosed. Some details have emerged about the negotiating points of Hamas, including an internationally funded reconstruction of the coastal strip that would be overseen by a Palestinian unity government led by President Mahmoud Abbas. Meanwhile, Norway is organizing a donor conference and the Western-backed Abbas is expected to take the lead in overseeing the
rebuilding in the coastal territory, which his Fatah movement lost to Hamas in 2007. International Mideast envoy Tony Blair, who is also involved in arranging the conference, was in Cairo and was to meet with Egypt’s foreign minister and Arab League officials on Wednesday. The cease-fire is the longest lull in a war that has killed nearly 1,900 Palestinians. Israel has lost 67 people, including three civilians. The war broke out on July 8, when the Israeli military began bombarding targets in Gaza in an attempt to stop Hamas from launching rockets at Israel. In a blogpost which has gone viral among Russian internet users, fan Ekaterina Stepanova says the searches, carried out by male police officers, constituted “humili-
ation.” Female fans were singled out and “required to strip, and that includes being demanded to remove their underwear” for a search lasting up to 10 minutes, she added. One female fan told local media she left the stadium rather than submit to the searches, while Stepanova said she refused to strip but was made to wait an hour and a half before being allowed in. The league’s safety director Alexander Meitin blasted the “rough treatment” in comments to the RSport agency, adding that the league and Spartak had submitted formal complaints. Kazan police say all searches at the game were legal and that only fans suspected of carrying contra-

“We take home a lot of love from the supporters. It was amazing from the first day until the last - in every stadium, in every training camp and in every hotel. I think (the highlights were) the support and obviously the new ideas that the manager has brought,” said Mata. Van Gaal’s 3-5-2 formation has seen Mata, who scored a well-taken goal against Liverpool, employed in an advanced playmaker role and that appears to suit him well. “I feel good and I feel comfortable in this position. I have to do what the manager wants me to do, both offensively and defensively, and I am trying to do that. It can be a good position for me to try to perform to my best,” he said. After a disappointing seventh place finish in the Premier League last year under David Moyes, United will be expected to be back in the title hunt and, at the very least, ensure a return to the Champions League with a top four finish. “We are all excited to start the new season,” said Mata, “Everybody wants to do better, we want to fight for the trophies and this club deserves that. We will try our best.”

Cease-fire in Gaza holds for second day Associated Press
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip — A cease-fire between Israel and Hamas that ended a month of war was holding for a second day Wednesday, ahead of negotiations in Cairo on a long-term truce and a broader deal for the war-ravaged Gaza Strip. In the coming days, Egyptian mediators are to shuttle between delegations from both sides to try to work out a deal. The Palestinian delegation is composed of negotiators from all major factions, including Hamas, the Islamic militant group that controls Gaza. Names of those in the Israeli team have not been disclosed. Some details have emerged about the negotiating points of Hamas, including an internationally funded reconstruction of the coastal strip that would be overseen by a Palestinian unity government led by President Mahmoud Abbas. Meanwhile, Norway is organizing a donor conference and the Western-backed Abbas is expected to take the lead in overseeing the
rebuilding in the coastal territory, which his Fatah movement lost to Hamas in 2007. International Mideast envoy Tony Blair, who is also involved in arranging the conference, was in Cairo and was to meet with Egypt’s foreign minister and Arab League officials on Wednesday. The cease-fire is the longest lull in a war that has killed nearly 1,900 Palestinians. Israel has lost 67 people, including three civilians. The war broke out on July 8, when the Israeli military began bombarding targets in Gaza in an attempt to stop Hamas from launching rockets at Israel. On July 17, Israel sent ground troops into the densely-populated territory to destroy underground tunnels it said
Hamas had constructed for attacks inside Israel. But in the weeks leading up to the war, Israeli-Palestinian tensions were soaring in the wake of the June killings of three Israeli teenagers, whose bodies were discovered two weeks after they disappeared in the West Bank. Israel accused Hamas of being behind the abductions, and subsequently carried out a massive ground operation in the West Bank, arresting hundreds of Hamas operatives as part of a manhunt. WASHINGTON — As Africa’s economy rises, American businesses are at risk of being left behind. “We are missing the boat” was the sour warning former President Bill Clinton issued Tuesday at an otherwise upbeat U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit here. Sub-Saharan Africa has enjoyed nearly 6 percent annual economic growth for the past decade. And the robust expansion is expected to endure through the decade. Ernst & Young calls Africa the world’s second-most attractive market for investment behind North America. Yet as Africa gains momentum, U.S. business activity there has all but stalled. U.S. direct investment in Africa essentially flat-lined between 2010 and 2012, according to United Nations numbers crunched by the Brookings Institution. Over the same period, China (with investment up 68 percent) and the European Union (up 8 percent) poured money into a region they see as rich with natural resources and economic potential. U.S. corporate profits in Africa fell in 2013 for a second straight year. “We have some catching up to do,” former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Tuesday. “We are letting Europe and China go faster than us.” Africa specialists complain that many American individuals and companies hold an outdated view of the region as a war-ridden disaster zone. “It perhaps collects more eyeballs and sells more newspapers to talk about conflicts and war and famine,” said Paul Sullivan, director of international business development at Acrow Bridge, a New Jersey firm that builds bridges in Africa. “There’s a real perception deficit
on the part of Western thinkers, particularly in the United States.” Jennifer Cooke, director of the Africa program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, argues: “Generally, the U.S. private sector has been risk-averse. There’s easier territory than Africa.” Chinese companies, by contrast, seem to be everywhere in Africa. The off-shore oil company CNOOC has invested $2 billion in a Ugandan oil field. Chinese operate supermarkets and mines. A Chinese construction company is building Uganda’s first expressway with a loan from Chinese bank. Some African leaders say the Chinese are more attuned than Americans to the region’s norms and sensibilities. Critics counter that a more decisive factor is that Chinese companies aren’t put off by bribes and kickbacks, while American firms must comply with a U.S. anti-corruption law. “Chinese companies are thus beating out U.S. firms, contributing to the rapid ascendancy of China on the African continent,” says Andy Spalding, who studies corruption at the University of Richmond School of Law. China’s growing influence, he says, is “exacerbating Africa’s corruption problem.” In what sounded like a dig at China, Vice President Joe Biden noted at the summit that it’s hard to compete for business fairly “when others cut corners.”

NEGARA - Three illegal loggers committing crimes in the forest of Medewi, Pekutatan, were arrested, Saturday afternoon (Aug 2). The three culprits including Nyoman Teken, 49, Ketut Warken, 43, and Nengah Suwandra, 41, living at Dauh Pangkung Selepa hamlet, Medewi village, kept the timber in the forest. The arrest began from public information where there was logging activity in the forest. Police then conducted an investigation and found some wooden logs at the house of Nyoman Teken, one of the suspects. A dozen of rosewood logs were put in the back of his house. The logs had been cut to various sizes and were covered with palm leaves. Once checked, there were totally 49 logs and a chainsaw. After that, police conducted a development. Based on recognition of the suspect, there were several other culprits and belonged to his relatives. PARIS - Daily, long-term doses of aspirin can slash the risk of cancer of the digestive tract, according to an overview of research published on Wednesday. Aspirin greatly reduces the risk of developing and dying from bowel, stomach and oesophageal cancer, its authors said. They found that taking aspirin for 10 years could cut bowel cancer cases by around 35 percent and deaths by 40 percent. Rates of oesophageal and stomach cancers were cut by 30 percent and deaths from these cancers by 35-50 percent. To gain these benefits meant people had to start taking a daily dose of 75-100 mg for at least five years and probably 10 years between the ages of 50 and 65. No benefit was seen while they took aspirin for the first three years, and death rates were only reduced after five years. Aspirin has long been considered to be a boost in the fight against cardiovascular disease and has also been investigated for reputed anti-cancer effects. This is the first to throw up broad evidence that it can be a shield against these types of cancer, the scientists said. The study, published in the European cancer journal Annals of Oncology, was led by Jack Cuzick, a professor at the the Centre for Cancer Prevention at Queen Mary University of London. It looked at more than 200 clinical trials and other studies that explored aspirin’s anti-cancer effects. “Our study shows that if everyone aged between 50-65 started taking as-

pirin daily for at least 10 years, there would be a nine-percent reduction in the number of cancers, strokes and heart attacks overall in men and around seven percent in women,” Cuzick said in a press release. “The total number of deaths from any cause would also be lower, by about four percent over a 20-year period. The benefits of aspirin use would be most visible in the reduction in deaths due to cancer.” The research said there was a downside to taking daily doses of aspirin -- potential side-effects such as peptic ulcers and bleeding in the digestive tract. In a very small number of elderly people, the bleeding could be life-threatening. It said further work was needed to see who would benefit most from taking aspirin and determining the right dose to maximise the protective effect. “It has long been known that aspirin - one of the cheapest and most common drugs on the market - can protect against certain types of cancer,” Cuzick said. “But until our study, where we analysed all the available evidence, it was unclear whether the pros of taking aspirin outweighed the cons.” Cuzick added: “Whilst there are some serious side effects that can’t be ignored, taking aspirin daily looks to be the most important thing we can do to reduce cancer after stopping smoking and reducing obesity, and will probably be much easier to implement.”

WASHINGTON - An experimental drug given to two American patients with Ebola is made from tobacco leaves and is hard to produce on a large scale, a leading US doctor said Tuesday. Known as ZMapp, the serum consists of three antibodies manufactured in modified tobacco leaves, which take weeks to grow. It was reportedly rushed to US missionaries Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol, who were stricken with Ebola while treating patients in Liberia. Both have shown improvements in their health and are now being treated in isolation at an Atlanta, Georgia hospital. “We cannot say right now that
this drug is particularly promising,” said Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases. “The animal data are very good and the use of it in the two patients is suggestive that it may have a favorable effect, but since there are only two patients I think you have to be careful about making any definitive decision,” he told AFP. There is no drug or vaccine on the market against Ebola virus, which causes fever, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle aches and sometimes organ failure and hemorrhaging. The ongoing outbreak in West Africa is the largest in history, having killed 887 of the more than 1,600 infected. As for ZMapp, which was first identified as a drug candidate in
January, there have been no safety tests yet in humans. “As such, very little of the drug is currently available,” the company said in a statement, adding that is working to scale up production as soon as possible. ZMapp is a project of Mapp Biopharmaceutical, Inc. and LeafBio in San Diego, California, Defyrus Inc. in Toronto, Canada, the US government and the Public Health Agency of Canada. Fauci said that the process of scaling up production will take time. “It is going to take several months to get even a modest amount,” he said. “So yes, we do want to do clinical trials but the limiting factor is the number of treatment courses that are available.”

DENPASAR - Pertamina Marketing Operation for Region V has made a restriction to the service time of subsidized diesel fuel at eight petrol stations in Denpasar in accordance with the provisions. At the moment, the total number of petrol station in East Java reached 835 retail outlets and 180 retail outlets in Bali. Assistant Manager of External Relations of Marketing Operation Region V, Heppy Wulansari, said such restriction was in appropriate with the Government Instruction through the circular of the Downstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Agency (BPH Migas) regarding the control of Specific Fuel in 2014. “Such policy also applies at 42 petrol stations in East Java. Thus, with the policy, the 50 petrol stations only serve the purchase of subsidized diesel fuel at 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. local time,” said Heppy Wulansari. According to him, the public could identify petrol stations imposed with time restriction through stickers, posters and banners installed in the station area. To anticipate the needs of consumers who made purchase of diesel fuel beyond the time restriction, Pertamina increased the availability of Pertamina Dex and non-subsidized diesel fuel at the 50 petrol stations. “Eight petrol stations imposed with such policies include the petrol stations located on Jalan Hayam Wuruk, Gunung Sanghyang, Sesetan, Raya Puputan, Ahmad Yani, Pulau Bungin and Jalan Buana Raya,” she explained. On the other hand, the restriction to diesel fuel would become a
burden to PLN because most of the power plants in Bali depended on such fuel. The letter of Pertamina dated July 25, 2014 carried that Pertamina planned to diminish the fuel supply to PLN by 50 percent. “If it is diminished, it will certainly have an impact on the PLN because many power plants use diesel fuel. We do hope the discussion can reach an appropriate or win-win solution for both parties for the sake of people of Indonesia,” said General Manager of PT PLN Bali, Syamsul Huda. Even though the PLN did not use subsidized fuel, he said the restriction of supply would have an impact on the PLN in the region that mostly still used diesel fuel. “Moreover, many power plants in Bali are still using diesel fuel. At the moment, the electricity of Bali is still dependent on Java,” he said. He hoped the Celukan Bawang power plant could soon be operated, so that the burden in Bali, chiefly South Bali, could be covered in whole. Celukan Bawang power plant produced 130 MW, but it could not be fully in operation because it still had a land problem for the development of high-voltage transmission lines along the Celukan Bawang (Buleleng) to Kapal (Badung). DENPASAR - Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali released the economy of Bali until the first half of 2014 that grew by 5.75 percent. This growth nearly happened in all sectors, except for quarry and construction sector with respective contraction of 4.06 percent and 2.79 percent. Nevertheless, when compared to the growth in the first half of 2013, the growth in this semester tended to slow down where the previous year’s economic growth reached 6.38 percent. The Head of BPS Bali, Panusunan Siregar, explained the eco-
nomic growth of Bali in the first half of 2014 was driven by the growth in the service sector by 8.68 percent, financial sector (8.66 percent), trade, hotel and restaurant (7.47 percent), industry (7.16 percent), transport (6.63 percent), electricity, gas and water supply (5.03 percent) and agriculture (0.50 percent). “The slowdown occurred due to a sharp decline in the construction and quarry sector where in the first half of 2013 the construction sector grew by 16.05 percent, but the first half of 2014 experienced a contraction of 2.79 percent,” said Panusunan Siregar.
Similarly, in the first half of 2013 the quarry sector grew by 14.07 percent, while in first half of 2014 it showed a contraction of 4.06 percent. In quarter-to-quarter basis, the performance of Bali’s economy in the second quarter increased by 2.80 percent when compared to the previous quarter. The increase occurred in all economic sectors. “The agricultural sector in the second quarter of 2014 grew by 2.84 percent (q-to-q), after contracting in the first quarter of 2014 by 2.84 percent,” he explained. He presented the economic growth in the second quarter of
2014 was driven by all subsectors, namely the livestock sub-sector grew by 4.45 percent, plantation subsector (3.68 percent), forestry subsector (3.25 percent), food crops subsector (2.48 percent) and fisheries subsector (1.42 percent). Meanwhile, quarry sector grew by 3.96 percent after contracting in the first quarter of 2014 by 5.73 percent. Processing industry sector grew by 1.49 percent (q-to-q) driven by the increase in subsectors of food, beverage and tobacco growing by 2.24 percent. Electricity, gas and water sector achieved the highest growth at 4.94 percent, but contracted in the previous quarter by 0.58 percent.
Construction sector grew by 1.81 percent, while trade, hotel and restaurant grew by 4.20 percent. The growth of trade, hotel and restaurant sector was driven by the increasing number of foreign travelers visiting Bali accounting for approximately 7 percent compared to the previous quarter. “It is also discernible from the increase in hotel room occupancy rate which accounted for approximately 3 percent. Implementation of religious holidays, school holiday season and the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) have also encouraged the increase in the sector,” he concluded. (kmb27)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

LOS ANGELES - A Los Angeles man is seeking damages from the estate of Michael Jackson, alleging that the late “King of Pop” sexually abused him as a child during the late 1980s, court documents show. James Safechuck, 36, said Jackson abused him on about 100 occasions over a four-year period after the two appeared in a Pepsi commercial when he was 10years-old. Filings by Safechuck’s attorneys alleged that Jackson, who died in 2009, “brainwashed” the youngster into believing the abuses were “acts of love.” The documents said Safechuck regularly shared Jackson’s bed during the singer’s “Bad” tour in 1988. Safechuck
said the abuse continued until he reached puberty. A hearing has been scheduled in Los Angeles for September 4 before judge Mitchell Beckloff. Howard Weitzman, a lawyer for the Jackson estate, said Safechuck’s claims should be dismissed. “Mr Safechuck’s request to file a late claim against the Jackson Estate so he can recover money from Michael’s beneficiary will hopefully be rejected,” Weitzman said.
“This is a person that made his claim five years after Michael died, more than 20 years after the incidents supposedly happened and has given sworn testimony that Michael never did anything inappropriate to him.” Last year, a 31-year-old Australian, Wade Robson, launched a similar claim on Jackson’s estate, alleging he was abused by the singer as a child. Jackson, who died on June 25 2009 after being given an overdose of the anesthetic propofol, faced multiple allegations of child sex abuse during his lifetime. He was acquitted of abuse at a 2005 trial in California and paid a $15 million court settlement in 1994 over allegations involving another child.

In a fiery speech at the Constitutional Court, Prabowo lashed out at the “dishonesty and injustice” of the poll -- which he lost to Joko Widodo -- and compared politics in the world’s third-biggest democracy to Stalinist North Korea. Widodo, a former furniture exporter known by his nickname Jokowi, won legions of fans with
his down-to-earth style as Jakarta governor and is the country’s first leader from outside the political and military elites. Prabowo, a controversial former military figure with roots in the era of dictator Suharto, also declared victory at the July 9 presidential election, but official results two weeks later confirmed Widodo won
a decisive victory. However, the ex-general -- who has been seeking the presidency for a decade -- has still refused to accept the results. His team has filed a lengthy complaint against the election commission with the Constitutional Court in the capital Jakarta, which rules on poll disputes. They claim he is the true winner of the election, that fraud occurred at tens of thousands of polling stations, and that election officials failed to order recounts in numerous places where they should have. While the challenge is widely
expected to fail, it has nevertheless dragged out the lengthy election process for a few more weeks. The court must issue a ruling by August 21, which cannot be appealed.
Like North Korea At Wednesday’s preliminary hearing, Prabowo delivered a typically fierce speech, saying his side had “tens of thousands” of witnesses who could back up his claims. He said the election had been hit by “distortion, dishonesty and injustice”. “There are hundreds of polling stations where our coalition... re-
ceived zero votes. This could only happen in a totalitarian country like North Korea,” he said. While there were some instances of vote fraud during the election, most analysts consider the country’s third direct presidential election since the end of authoritarian rule in 1998 to have been free and fair. Prabowo said he was seeking “justice for the Indonesian people”. “If justice cannot be served, we are very, very worried for the future of Indonesia’s democracy, Indonesia’s people,” he added.
