ALBANY — Paul McCartney returned to a concert stage Saturday after being sidelined for two months because of a virus, spinning out songs from the Beatles, Wings and a solo career that has spanned more than 50 years of rock ‘n’ roll. “It’s great to be back,” said McCartney, who turned 72 two weeks ago. He looked none the worse for wear, putting on a show of just under three hours with 38 songs before finishing with the three-song medley that ends the “Abbey Road” album. McCartney was briefly hospitalized in Tokyo in May because of the viral infection. The illness forced him to cancel a Japanese tour and a concert in South Korea and reschedule half a dozen June dates in the United States before resuming his “Out There” tour in Albany. McCartney also honored another late rock star, Jimi Hendrix, with an instrumental interlude of “Purple Haze.” McCartney’s wife, Nancy, was on hand and he dedicated the song “My Valentine” to her. Perhaps one oblique reference to his absence was the new song, “On My Way to Work,” which McCartney said he hadn’t performed publicly before. During his second encore, he brought a couple from Rochester onstage after the woman held up a sign saying her boyfriend wouldn’t marry her until he met McCartney. After the man led the audience in a verse of “When I’m 64” to honor his age, he went to his knees and successfully proposed. “And he booked us for the wedding,” McCartney joked. It’s a busy year for McCartney, who marked the 50th anniversary of his first appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show” this winter, which marked the beginning of Beatlemania in the United States. He has 19 U.S. shows scheduled, including one at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, where the Beatles made their final concert appearance in 1966. The other surviving ex-Beatle, Ringo Starr, is also on the road this summer.

DENPASAR - The effort of Bali government to suppress the poor population growth has not showed a result. Data of Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) of Bali, mentioned if the number of poor people in the past six months (September 2013-March 2014) increased to the tune of 2,430 people. “The number of poor people in March 2014 reached 185,200 people, whereas in last September amounted to 182,770 people, so there is an increase of 0.04 percent.
We see the development of poverty in Bali is quite volatile,” said the Head of BPS Bali, Panusunan Siregar, in Denpasar. He explained the percentage
of poor people in March 2011 until September 2011 showed an increase, but in the period of September 2011 to September 2012 showed a decrease. However, the percentage of poor people in the period of March 2013 to March 2014 continued to rise. “The factors encouraging poverty rate to rise in Bali include inflation, contraction in the agricultural sector and increase in basic needs,” he said. According to him, the inflation
occurred from the third quarter of 2013 through the first quarter of 2014 reached 1.67 percent in rural areas of Bali. At the same period, the inflation also actually occurred in urban areas. It showed that people in rural areas were more susceptible to the effects of inflation than those in urban areas due to the rise of rural poverty, while in urban areas it actually fell. Meanwhile, negative growth also occurred in the agricultural sector
by 1.95 percent. At same time, there was an increase in the retail price of some basic necessities in Bali such as rice (0.90 percent), cooking oil (4.25 percent) and cayenne pepper (71.65 percent). “When viewed from the area where they live, the poor population in urban areas shows a decrease of 3,130 people. GIANYAR - A restaurant in the area of Ubud, Green Leaf Restaurant, located on Jalan Monkey Forest, Padangtegal hamlet, Ubud, caught fire early Friday (Jul 4). The dwellers around the tourist area were made surprised. Two units of fire truck were brought to the scene to assist fire fighting, so that the fire did not enlarge. The fire was just known around 02:15 a.m. At that time, pecalang or customary security guard of Padangtegal, Ubud, were patrolling and suddenly saw sparks in the restaurant. Then, the security guards approached the location. The fire was seen to have been burning the building to the top. Immediately, the incident was reported to Ubud Police. Two units of fire truck of Gianyar came to the scene to assist in extinguishing the fire. Soon, the fire could be extinguished. The restaurant building with an area of 5 x 20 meters was on fire, but did not claim any casualties. Allegedly, the fire was estimated to be kindled by the sparks due to short circuit. The roof top of restaurant building made of combustible materials such as wood, bamboo and plaited bamboo wall burned out. Due to the incident, the owner of restaurant, I Made Ardika, considered the fire engulfing his business was a disaster. Chief of Ubud Police, Wayan Sumara, said that after receiving the report regarding the fire incident, police officers were assigned to come down to the scene to investigate the source of fire causing the top of the building to be on fire. Preliminary results of the investigation indicated if the source of fire was estimated to have been kindled by short circuit. (kmb16)

When contacted separately, the Head of Buleleng Municipal Police, Putu Hartana, said the discipline action and repatriation to their home of region had not yielded optimal results. Having been disciplined and repatriated, they still came back to Buleleng not long after. Even, the efforts of the municipal police had also held a trial of misdemeanor, but it did not make the beggars give up. “As a law reinforcement of the regional bylaw and security guard of public order, we will provide coaching and there is possibility to perform discipline,” he said. At the location, those children begged the riders who were waiting in line to re-fuel their motorcycle. With such action, the children could raise IDR 20,000 a day. Besides, the invasion of beggars was also commonly found at petrol station of Baktiseraga village, Buleleng. Aside from local riders, foreign travelers who lined up to re-fuel were often taken advantage as an easy target in order to get a dime. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Batman celebrates 75th birthday in Hollywood style

LOS ANGELES - Ker-pow! Batman is celebrating his 75th birthday this month with a series of comic-book, video-game and other events putting Gotham’s famed Caped Crusader firmly back in the spotlight. July 23 is officially Batman Day, and to mark the occasion in Hollywood, Warner Bros has organized a VIP studio tour including Batmobiles, masks, capes and other souvenirs of the Dark Knight. “The world has no heroes... Batman gives you some hope and some faith,” actor Danny DeVito, who played the caped one’s nemesis the Penguin in the 1992 movie “Batman Returns,” told AFP in an interview. Batman was born in May 1939, the creation of artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, who were tasked by DC Comics with creating a new superhero in the wake of the success of Superman. Unlike Superman, the new hero was given a dark side, and rapidly became a global pop culture icon, decades before the latest generation of superheroes like Captain America, Spiderman or Iron Man took to the big screen. While Superman represents the archetypal hero with super-human powers, a brightly colored costume and appears in daylight, Bruce Wayne is a wealthy tycoon who changes into a mask and dark cape to bring justice to Gotham City. DeVito said Batman’s success stems from the lack of faith in the
political and business class. “We look around at us, our leaders and the young people we are supposed to look to. “There’s really nobody you can have faith in,” he said. Bruce Wayne has remained popular through the decades thanks to the varied formats, from the 1960s TV series “Batman” with Adam West and Burt Ward, the success of which re-kindled sales of the original comic books. “The passion of fans is very, very high, it’s a way of life,” said Jim Lee, artist and co-editor of DC Entertainment, the parent company of DC Comics, at the presentation of the Warner Bros exhibition. “People tattoo images of Batman all over the body. It’s amazing to see how Batman has become a huge part of pop culture, he has really captivated the imagination of the entire world,” he said. PARIS — A new attraction inspired by the Disney movie “Ratatouille” is scheduled to open July 10 at Disneyland Paris. It will be the first ride at any Disney park based on the 2007 animated movie about a rat named Remy who is a gifted French chef. The art troupe from Bangli, Yoh Pongsri, seemed to be able to play this instrument very well. This kind of musical instrument became very popular in Bali during the 1950s. Genggong is a kind of jaw harp used in the music of Bali. It consists of a wooden frame and tongue cut from a single piece of the leaf stem of the sugar palm. The left end is held firmly against the cheek, while a string tied to the right end is jerked rhythmically to set the tongue into motion (in contrast to other jaw harps in which the tongue itself is plucked to produce sound). Different harmonics are produced by pronouncing different vowel sounds. Very much a folk instrument, genggong was traditionally played only as a solo instrument or with small numbers of other genggong as informal entertainment. Since the 1930s, however, genggong has often featured in gamelan genggong, a larger ensemble of several genggong together with suling and percussion instruments. Usually, Genggong used to accompany the performance of ballet with the storyline Godongan (giant frog). It was commonly performed in every Hindu ritual, and other spiritual events. This rare type of music is not as popular as the gong kebyar gamelan music. It is very rare and can be found in Karangasem, Batuan village, Gianyar and the Munduk Lumbang, Baturiti, Tabanan. Now, this kind of art is presented more attractively. Elements of the dance, theater and vocal music are nicely arranged. New ideas are also developed so as to achieve the necessary perfection of the society today. This composition reveals the visual sound, without story but illustrates the frog character such as when it is walking and expressing its behavior in the community group. NEGARA - Rabies is still threatening some regions in Bali, including Jembrana. The Jembrana Agriculture, Livestock and Plantation Agency intensely performed mass vaccination of dogs at each village in Jembrana. A number of rabies dog bite incidents remained to happen and got serious attention from the agency. The Head of Jembrana Agriculture, Livestock and Plantation Agency, Ketut Wiratma, said on Friday (Jul 4) there were eight locations of dog bite occurred in March and April. They mostly happened in Mendoyo subdistrict. All the biting dogs were declared positive to rabies based on the results of
laboratory test. Currently, the agency was undertaking a mass vaccination program targeting 33,000 dogs. According to him, Jembrana was still vigilant to rabies. He also hoped the low people’s awareness of vaccinating their dog could be increased. Meanwhile, the Head of Jembrana Health Agency, Putu Suasta, said the threat of rabies in Jembrana could happen any time. The increasing incident of dog bite cases should be alerted even though the bite cases by dogs declared positive to rabies had decreased. NEGARA - The effort to evacuate the goods transported by trucks in the Pancar Indah LCT on Saturday (Jul 5) was hampered by high waves in the waters of Gilimanuk where the vessel ran aground. The evacuation led by the Team Leader, Poliman, from the ASDP crossing authority, utilized the Trans Jawa LCT, Trima Jaya IX LCT vessel and involved dozens of people. The evacuation process was quite difficult because the waves were very high. In the evacuation effort, the Bali Naval Base Commander, Julius Widjojono, accompanied by the Gilimanuk Naval Post Commander Putu Ratmaya also participated in the monitoring. He clarified there was no looting in the vessel and it had been anticipated. People just picked up the falling and scattered stuff. Six personnel were stationed for supervision patrol. Meanwhile, the evacuation of trucks and other vehicles were waiting for the crane. Currently, the effort was only focused on minimizing the losses. Poliman, the evacuation team leader, said the evacuation of goods in the vessel was estimated to take place for four days. According to him, the evacuation on Saturday had reached 50 percent of the items by using manual labor. The goods evacuated included basic necessities, marble, beverage, animal feed, LPG cylinder and others. A driver of truck with license plate DR 8524 AA, Nyoman Tilik, from South Denpasar, said that he held 475 sacks of cement. Based on information, the Pancar Indah LCT vessel carried the freight in imbalanced condition. RAMALLAH, West Bank — An autopsy showed an Arab teenager who Palestinians say was killed in a revenge attack was burned to death, officials said Saturday, while Palestinian militants fired two rockets toward a major southern city deeper into Israel than any other attack in the current round of violence. large protests in his east Jerusalem neighborhood, suffered burns on “90 percent of his body.” “The results show he was breathing while on fire and died from burns and their consequences,” al-Owaiwi said. The autopsy found evidence that Abu Khdeir had breathed in the flames as burns were found inside his body, in his lungs, bronchial tubes and his throat, al-Owaiwi said. According to the Lamu county commissioner Njenga Miiri, a group of about 15 gunmen raided the Malamandi village of Hindi and started shooting at residents. The gunmen also attacked Gamba police station, Kenya’s police chief David Kimaiyo said. Hindi is about 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Mpeketoni where dozens were killed in an attack last month, while Gamba is about 70 kilometers (43 miles) northwest of Mpeketoni. The Kenya Red Cross said nine people were killed in Hindi, while in Gamba nine others were killed and one person was missing. The
nine victims in Gamba included five inmates said to be non-Muslim, who were killed when the gunmen attacked the police station, said a senior police officer who insisted on anonymity because he was not authorized to speak with the media. Three other inmates escaped with the gunmen. The officer said the gunmen got to the police station by car-jacking a truck and killing its three occupants. Five police officers were wounded in the attack and one officer was killed, he said. Kenya has suffered a spate of gun and explosive attacks since deploying its troops in Oct. 2011 to fight al-Shabab militants.
Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for an attack last month on the town of Mpeketoni on the Kenyan coast and another attack the following day on a nearby village. Despite that, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and the interior minister have blamed local political networks for those attacks and said they were planned locally — assertions that have been met with skepticism. Late last month police arrested Lamu Governor Issa Timamy and have charged him for murder, forceful eviction of population and terrorism charges in connection to the Mpeketoni attacks.

Brent crude, a benchmark for international oils, was down 63 cents to $110.61 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London. U.S. markets are closed Friday for the Fourth of July holiday and trading volumes in other markets were thinner than usual.Crude fell despite signs the U.S. economy is steadily improving, which typically would increase demand for oil. The U.S. government reported that employers added a strong 288,000 workers to their payrolls in June and the unemployment rate fell to 6.1 percent. The positive economic news, however, also strengthened the dollar, a
factor that weighed on oil prices by making crude more expensive — and a less attractive investment — for traders using other currencies. Oil has been sliding since it reached a 10-month closing high of $107.26 on June 20, when concerns had grown over the stunning advance by Islamic militants in controlling Iraqi territory. Since then, it has become clear that there are no imminent disruptions to supplies from Iraq, OPEC’s second biggest producer. On top of that, an agreement in Libya between the central government and a regional militia was expected to lead to the reopening of two eastern oil terminals that would boost the country’s crude exports by about 500,000 barrels a day. Libya currently produces around 350,000 barrels of oil a day.

PITTSBURGH — Richard Mellon Scaife, the billionaire heir to the Mellon banking and oil fortune and a newspaper publisher who funded libertarian and conservative causes and various projects to discredit President Bill Clinton, has died. He was 82. Scaife died early Friday at his home, his newspaper, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, reported. Scaife’s death comes less than two months after he announced in a first-person, front-page story in his Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that he had an untreatable form of cancer. “Some who dislike me may rejoice at the news,” wrote Scaife, who acknowledged making political and other enemies. “Naturally, I can’t share their enthusiasm.” He was the grand-nephew of Andrew Mellon, a banker and secretary of the Treasury who was involved with some of the biggest industrial companies of the early 20th century. Forbes magazine estimated Scaife’s net worth in 2013 at $1.4 billion. The intensely private Scaife became widely known in the 1990s
when first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton said her husband was being attacked by a “vast right-wing conspiracy.” White House staffers and other supporters suggested Scaife was playing a central role in the attack. Several foundations controlled by Scaife gave millions of dollars to organizations run by critics of Clinton, including $1.7 million for a project at the conservative American Spectator magazine to dig up information about his role in the Whitewater real estate scandal. Scaife rarely gave interviews, but in a sit-down with George magazine editor John F. MANGUPURA - An Australian man was found hanging in his house in Dalung residence of Badung District, Bali, on Saturday. Thomas Rick Michael (34) was found lifeless by his wife Restu Wilujeng at 6.39 am local time (GMT+7) in their rented house in Banjar Dukuh, Dalung Village, North Kuta, Badung District. The couple were watching television from 9.30 pm local time on Friday, July 4, according to Restu Wilujeng. Then Wilujeng went to the bedroom leaving Michael alone on the couch in front of the television set, where he finally fell asleep. On Saturday Morning, Wilujeng did not find Michael on the couch, and went looking for him in the entire house. She found his body hanging in the backyard of their home. Wilujeng immediately called her relative for help. Michael was undergoing psychiatric therapy in Denpasar for his depression, which he had been suffering from for a long time before marrying Wilujeng. They had rented the house in Dalung residence two years ago and lived there with their son. One of the daily activities of her husband’s was surfing on the beach in Bali, Wilujeng said. Based on preliminary investigations, there were no signs of violence on the victim’s body. The police personnel found a letter of apology and love addressed to his wife Wilujeng, his son and his mother, written in English.

Interestingly, though the abrasion has been taking place nearly for one and a half years, there is no indication if the abrasion will be handled by the government. Coastal revetment on the north of the Agricultural Quarantine Agency looks to have been eroded by ocean waves. Such concrete revetment with the length of about 400 meters to the west has been damaged. Even, ferocity of the ocean waves has also eroded the compound wall of Segara Temple at Tinga-Tinga customary village. Such condition is feared to make local residents difficult during the ceremony. Besides, the trees along the coastal areas have been falling as hit by the waves. The shoreline damage at Tinga-Tinga
was visited by Deputy Regent of Buleleng, I Nyoman Sutjidra, in 2012. During the visit, local residents appealed to assistance to local government in order that the coastal damage around the temple area could be addressed immediately. However, so far there had been no indication of the revetment was constructed in the region. The Head of Buleleng Public Works, Nyoman Gede Suryawan, justified if the local government had not yet addressed the coastal abrasion at Tinga-Tinga. He admitted the county government did not have sufficient fund to handle the abrasion. Moreover, the handling of abrasion needed a large number of funds between IDR 15 million and IDR 20 million for each meter of coastal damage. “We are not able to handle the coastal damage (abrasion) because it requires huge funds,” he said. He added the handling of coastal
abrasion in Buleleng relied on the help of financial support from the Bali Public Works and the Bali-Penida River Agency (BWS). He pointed out that in 2014 the coastal damaged funded by the assistance of the Bali-Penida Agency was carried out at Patas village (Gerokgak) and Pengastulan village (Seririt). Meanwhile, the coastal abrasion at Tinga-Tinga was not included in the list of the proposed activities funded by the Bali-Penida River Agency and the Bali Public Works. To ensure the condition on the TingaTinga Beach, Suryawan promised to check the proposal on the coastal abrasion management having been submitted to the Bali Public Works and Bali-Penida River Agency. Jaja gadang tain temuati is one of the traditional cakes of community in Bali. It is called jaja gadang tain temuati because it is green (gadang) and has the shape of small round worm excrement (tain temuati). This very tender and sweet cake exudes a very typical flavor. Moreover, it is very safe to consume because the ingredients and coloring agent are made of organic substance.
THE main ingredient is rice flour mixed with green leaf extract produced by daun suji or dracaena leaf. It is used to make the cake look greenish as well as engender a delicious flavor, and fragrance. To serve the cake, it is put onto a small dish and then sprinkled with grated coconut and brown sugar sauce. On days of yore, the cake was presented with a tekor (dish-shaped banana leaf). This cake is usually served when people held grandiose religious ceremonies (engaging villagers). But now, the traditional cake is very rare. Aside from being difficult and complicated preparation, the ingredient in use is also of selected rice
processed manually. Preparations: first of all, the selected rice is soaked with clean water for about 6 hours. After that, the rice is made into flour by means of crushing. The flour is then clenched into the shape of balls. Then, steam all the batters until cooked or for 15 minutes. Take out the cooked flour and then mixed with the extract of dracaena leaf and give a small amount of starch to make it sticky. Unlike in the past, to make the batter sticky people usually used cassava. Later on, the flour batter is crushed and kneaded until refined. Subsequently, the batter is formed by using coconut shell mold having
many small holes. This mold is put on the flour and then driven while rolling it. From the holes of coconut shell mold will come out a cake resembling the earth worm excrement. Afterward, the cake is placed on a banana leaf and then steamed again for about 15 minutes. When having cooked, the cake is taken out and cooled. For the presentation, the cake should be removed from the banana leaves one by one. Then, put them on the plate and sprinkle with grated coconut and brown sugar sauce. To sprinkle the sugar, use banana leaf whose end has been torn up resembling a brush. Having sprinkled it evenly, the cake is ready to serve.

The laborers had built lean-tos and shacks near the wall that came down before dawn after heavy rains, said K Veera Raghav Rao, a senior district official. One worker was hospitalized in a village in Tamil Nadu’s Thiruvallur district. Rao said that cause of the collapse will be investigated. Sunday’s accident came less than 10 days after an 11-story building under construction collapsed in state capital Chennai, killing more than 60 people. Police have arrested six construction company officials for alleged criminal negligence and violation of building codes. Building collapses are common in India, where builders use poor enforcement of regulations to add unauthorized floors and use substandard materials.

Secretary of the Indonesian Economist Association (ISEI) of Bali Chapter, Prof. Dr. IB Raka Suardana, also said the increase in the poverty rate in Bali was triggered by many factors, such as the rising prices of basic needs or the decrease in revenue. “The increase in the poverty rate may be caused by the prices of essential goods, so that the purchasing power decreases. Or it can also be triggered by the decrease in public revenue, due to the decline in labor absorption by the employment sector, both formal and informal,” he said. Even, Raka Suardana assessed the poverty rate in Bali would be getting higher if the government utilized the indicators as specified by the World Bank. “When using the World Bank benchmark setting the minimum public income at USD 2, then the number of people considered to be poor will grow,” he said. The solution to reduce poverty rate, recognized Raka Suardana, apart from the monetary side could also be performed by fiscal policy. On the monetary side, the banking institution should be able to lower its interest rate, so that the economy moved and could increase the absorption of labor force. The ministry, state agencies and regional agencies should also realize budgets, so that it could be absorbed by business sector. “In terms of fiscal aspect, the government should encourage the state spending or expenditure which of course can make the economy move,” he said. On top of that he will have to balance a rising tide of economic nationalism that has dimmed the country’s appeal as an investment destination with an urgent need to keep foreign funds flowing. Of the two candidates, Joko Widodo -- who has seen a once-huge poll lead dwindle to just a few points -- is investors’ favourite. The Jakarta governor, known by his nickname Jokowi, is considered clean in a country where corruption is rampant and a potential reformer, although an increasingly nationalistic tone during the election campaign has caused some unease. In contrast, his rival Prabowo Subianto is looked at warily by markets, as an ex-general with deep roots in the era of dictator Suharto and known for his fiery, anti-foreigner rhetoric. But whoever wins will find an economy in a delicate state, analysts say. “The next president will inherit huge problems, he will have to hit the ground running on the first day,” economist Latif Adam, from government-funded
research group the Indonesian Institute of Sciences, told AFP. At first glance the economy is looking in good shape, clocking up annual growth of around six percent in recent years on the back of strong commodities exports and growing domestic consumption among a rapidly emerging middle-class. It also managed to come through last year’s emerging markets crisis that was fuelled by fears an end to the US Federal Reserve’s stimulus would see foreign cash flood out of the developing economies. Those fears saw Jakarta unveil some much-needed reforms. However, a global commodities boom has fizzled, growth in gross domestic product at the start of this year was the slowest since 2009 and further reforms seemed to have petered as an
expected collapse in investment failed to materialise. Analysts now warn the government desperately needs a new approach to get the economy back on track. First on the list, economists say, must be to phase out the huge fuel subsidies that make petrol prices in Indonesia among the cheapest in Asia but gobble up about 20 percent of the state budget. The government of outgoing President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has implemented several limited cuts during a decade in power, but failed to push through radical changes, deterred by popular anger. “On his first day, the next president will have a very limited fund for ministries and government bodies because the money has been used to increase the fuel subsidy,” David Sumual, chief economist of Indonesia’s Bank Central Asia, told AFP. Widodo has pledged to do away with the subsidies entirely, and Prabowo to reduce them substantially. But large cuts will push up inflation -- and hit the millions of poor people the candidates have pledged to help during their campaigns.
JAKARTA - Indonesia’s presidential election campaign has ended following the final presidential debate on Saturday evening. “Today is the final day of all campaign activities. Starting tomorrow July 6 until July 8 no campaign activity is allowed,” General Election Commission (KPU) chief commissioner Husni Kamil Malik said when opening the presidential debate. He also called on the people to set an example for other nations with regard to the implementation of the democracy event. “We must be able to become a role model for other nations in the implementation of democracy especially the general election,” he said. He said he hoped people later would accept whatever the result of the election would be as whoever would be elected he would be the leader of Indonesia. “After the election the presidential and vice presidential candidates that win would be our national leader, the leader of us all and not only one camp. The ultimate winner is the people of Indonesia,” he said. “We hope the campaign teams starting tonight would remind all people to exercise restraint and maintain orderliness. We hope Indonesia would be able to become a role model with its election for other nations,” he said. Nine killed in landslide at illegal gold mine

Four people were still missing and two others were rescued alive after the landslide struck Wednesday near Dageuwo village, Papua province, local search and rescue chief Marsudi told AFP. Rescuers had to fly to the scene of the accident in the country’s easternmost province, as the mountainous, remote area could not be reached by land, said the official, who like many Indonesians goes by one name. All the victims were believed to be illegal miners, he added. Illegal gold mining has boomed in Indonesia in recent years as the price of the precious metal has surged, and deaths are common.But experts warn that the widespread practice of using mercury to extract gold from ore is putting the health of miners at risk and poisoning communities where they work. The United Nations estimates that up to 15 million so-called “artisanal small-scale gold miners” operate in 70 countries worldwide.

Ginobili wrote on Tuesday on his Facebook page that his availability will depend on how he feels in about three weeks, but that he remains
optimistic. It’s unclear when Ginobili was injured. He averaged 14.4 points in the NBA Finals, when the Spurs beat Miami in five games to give Ginobili his fourth championship.

MADRID — Real Madrid great Alfredo Di Stefano was in a coma and in serious condition following a heart attack on Saturday. After being resuscitated on a Madrid street by paramedics, the 88-year-old Di Stefano was taken to Madrid’s Gregorio Maranon Hospital where he remains in coma. The hospital medical report said Di Stefano was “stable” but “serious.” It said he has been
sedated, received a tracheal intubation, and was on mechanical ventilation. A spokeswoman for Madrid’s emergency service Samur told The Associated Press that an ambulance was called to attend Di Stefano at Juan Ramon Jimenez street, just north of the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, at 5 p.m. She spoke on condition of anonymity because of department policy preventing her from being identified by name. She said paramedics found Di Stefano’s heart had stopped beat-
ing and he wasn’t breathing, but they managed to resuscitate him after 18 minutes. Dubbed “La Saeta Rubia” (The Blond Arrow) for his speed, Di Stefano is a former Argentina forward who helped Madrid win five straight European Champions Cups from 1956-60, and eight Spanish league titles. He was voted European player of the year in 1957 and ‘59. He retired at the age of 40 in 1966, ending a 22-year playing career. He turned 88 on Friday.

Of the 32 teams who played at this World Cup, Costa Rica have gone the furthest in exceeding expectations, providing the tournament with a genuine David to take on football’s Goliaths. When they were drawn in the same group as Italy, Uruguay and England, teams with seven World Cup titles between them, no one gave the Central Americans a chance of making the second round. But they did so in style, beating Uruguay 3-1 and Italy 1-0 before strolling to a goalless draw with England to clinch top spot in the group. They showed gritty determination to battle past Greece in the second round, playing for nearly an hour with 10 men to take the match to a penalty shootout which they won. Even in their quarter-final defeat by the Netherlands on Saturday, they contained Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie for 120 minutes of open play before finally succumbing to defeat in a penalty shootout in Salvador. “During this World Cup we have done very beautiful things that many people didn’t believe we could achieve - wonderful things,” their Colombian coach Jorge Luis Pinto said. “We played against great powerhouses of football. We leave the tournament unbeaten (in open play). It’s incredible.” Costa Rica’s achievements are all the more remarkable given the injuries they suffered in the run-up to the tournament. But from the outset, Pinto’s side played with a confidence and maturity that belied their lowly status. Their main striker, the lightning-quick Joel Campbell, has made most of their headlines and after spending last season on loan in Greece might well have done enough to earn a permanent move to England. He is currently on Arsenal’s books, although Everton and Newcastle are also reportedly interested in signing
him. Campbell has been admirably supported by captain Bryan Ruiz and Christian Bolanos in the attacking midfield roles. The latter’s pin-point free kicks and corners have been a feature of Costa Rica’s World Cup. But it is in defence that Pinto’s side have really shone. In five matches in Brazil they conceded just two goals in open play and one of them was from a penalty. Keylor Navas confirmed his reputation as one of the world’s best goalkeepers while defenders Giancarlo Gonzalez, Michael Umana and Cristian Gamboa showed themselves equal to the threat of Italy’s Mario Balotelli, Uruguay’s Edinson Cavani, England’s Wayne Rooney and the Dutchmen Van Persie and Robben.

Higuain came into the tournament following an ankle injury at Napoli and had seemed to be struggling to find his touch until his brilliantly-taken volley, the only goal of the game, sunk the Belgians in the eighth minute. “He needed some mileage after that injury with Napoli,” coach Alejandro Sabella told reporters, dismissing suggestions that the 26year-old, who has played as a lone striker in four of Argentina’s five games in Brazil, had been ineffective in the 1-0 second round win over the Switzerland. “I said after the last game that he was the player who ran the most,” said Sabella. “Today, in addition to running, he collaborated and scored a goal which is always important for a forward. When they were drawn in the same group as Italy, Uruguay and England, teams with seven World Cup titles between them, no one gave the Central Americans a chance of making the second round. But they did so in style, beating Uruguay 3-1 and Italy 1-0 before strolling to a goalless draw with England to clinch top spot in the group. They showed gritty determination to battle past Greece in the second round, playing for nearly an hour with 10 men to take the match to a penalty shootout which they won. Even in their quarter-final defeat by the Netherlands on Saturday, they contained Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie for 120 minutes of open play before finally succumbing to defeat in a penalty shootout in Salvador. “During this World Cup we have done very beautiful things that many people didn’t believe we could achieve - wonderful things,” their Colombian coach Jorge Luis Pinto said. “We played against great powerhouses of football. We leave the tournament unbeaten (in open play). It’s incredible.” Costa Rica’s achievements are all the more remarkable given the injuries they suffered in the run-up to the tournament. him. Campbell has been admirably supported by captain Bryan Ruiz and Christian Bolanos in the attacking midfield roles. In five matches in Brazil they conceded just two goals in open play and one of them was from a penalty. Higuain came into the tournament following an ankle injury at Napoli and had seemed to be struggling to find his touch until his brilliantly-taken volley, the only goal of the game, sunk the Belgians in the eighth minute. “He needed some mileage after that injury with Napoli,” coach Alejandro Sabella told reporters, dismissing suggestions that the 26year-old, who has played as a lone striker in four of Argentina’s five games in Brazil, had been ineffective in the 1-0 second round win over the Switzerland. “I said after the last game that he was the player who ran the most,” said Sabella. “Today, in addition to running, he collaborated and scored a goal which is always important for a forward. Ginobili wrote on Tuesday on his Facebook page that his availability will depend on how he feels in about three weeks, but that he remains
optimistic. It’s unclear when Ginobili was injured. He averaged 14.4 points in the NBA Finals, when the Spurs beat Miami in five games to give Ginobili his fourth championship.

One worker was hospitalized in a village in Tamil Nadu’s Thiruvallur district. Rao said that cause of the collapse will be investigated. Sunday’s accident came less than 10 days after an 11-story building under construction collapsed in state capital Chennai, killing more than 60 people. Police have arrested six construction company officials for alleged criminal negligence and violation of building codes. Building collapses are common in India, where builders use poor enforcement of regulations to add unauthorized floors and use substandard materials.

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia — Arthur hit Canada’s Maritime provinces with near-hurricane strength winds and torrential rains, knocking down trees and leaving about tens of thousands of people without power. Canadian Hurricane Centre spokesman Chris Fogarty said that winds were easing, but more rainfall is predicted for already drenched southwestern New Brunswick. In Fredericton, New Brunswick, Mike Gange said the buffeting winds tore down a maple tree in his front yard, damaging roof tiles and a rain gutter as it fell. He said that as he drove around the New Brunswick provincial capital he saw about 25 homes with big trees knocked down. Gange said he has not seen weather this severe in his 41 years in Fredericton. “It’s like a Tasmanian devil ripping through your backyard,” he said. “It’s crazy here ... at times it rains so hard you can’t see 10 feet in front of you.” Arthur was downgraded from a hurricane to a post-tropical storm Saturday morning by the time it reached Atlantic Canada. A day earlier it swiped at North Carolina’s Outer Banks, where some vacationers were already back on beaches Saturday despite warnings that the water remained
dangerous. Environment Canada measured wind gusts topping 72 mph (116 kph) in the Halifax area, while more than 5 inches (12.7 centimeters) of rain had already fallen in some areas of New Brunswick. By late Saturday afternoon, Arthur was 19 miles (30 kilometers) southwest of Moncton, New Brunswick, with maximum sustained winds of 56 mph (90 kph), the Canadian Hurricane Centre said. Nova Scotia Power said about 135,000 of its customers were without power at mid-afternoon Saturday. New Brunswick’s main electrical utility reported more than 115,000 outages by mid-afternoon. It warned some residents they could be without power for up to 48 hours because of widespread damage caused by the storm. NB Power said the largest
number of outages was in Fredericton where winds of more than 62 mph (100 kph) had knocked down a number of large trees, leaving streets littered with debris. Police in Saint John, New Brunswick, said some local roads were closed because they were covered by flood water. Secretary of the Indonesian Economist Association (ISEI) of Bali Chapter, Prof. Dr. IB Raka Suardana, also said the increase in the poverty rate in Bali was triggered by many factors, such as the rising prices of basic needs or the decrease in revenue. “The increase in the poverty rate may be caused by the prices of essential goods, so that the purchasing power decreases. Or it can also be triggered by the decrease in public revenue, due to the decline in labor absorption by the employment sector, both formal and informal,” he said. Even, Raka Suardana assessed the poverty rate in Bali would be getting higher if the government utilized the indicators as specified by the World Bank. “When using the World Bank benchmark setting the minimum public income at USD 2, then the number of people considered to be poor will grow,” he said. The solution to reduce poverty rate, recognized Raka Suardana, apart from the monetary side could also be performed by fiscal policy. On the monetary side, the banking institution should be able to lower its interest rate, so that the economy moved and could increase the absorption of labor force. The ministry, state agencies and regional agencies should also realize budgets, so that it could be absorbed by business sector. “In terms of fiscal aspect, the government should encourage the state spending or expenditure which of course can make the economy move,” he said. On top of that he will have to balance a rising tide of economic nationalism that has dimmed the country’s appeal as an investment destination with an urgent need to keep foreign funds flowing. Of the two candidates, Joko Widodo -- who has seen a once-huge poll lead dwindle to just a few points -- is investors’ favourite. The Jakarta governor, known by his nickname Jokowi, is considered clean in a country where corruption is rampant and a potential reformer, although an increasingly nationalistic tone during the election campaign has caused some unease. In contrast, his rival Prabowo Subianto is looked at warily by markets, as an ex-general with deep roots in the era of dictator Suharto and known for his fiery, anti-foreigner rhetoric. But whoever wins will find an economy in a delicate state, analysts say. “The next president will inherit huge problems, he will have to hit the ground running on the first day,” economist Latif Adam, from government-funded
research group the Indonesian Institute of Sciences, told AFP. At first glance the economy is looking in good shape, clocking up annual growth of around six percent in recent years on the back of strong commodities exports and growing domestic consumption among a rapidly emerging middle-class. It also managed to come through last year’s emerging markets crisis that was fuelled by fears an end to the US Federal Reserve’s stimulus would see foreign cash flood out of the developing economies. Those fears saw Jakarta unveil some much-needed reforms. However, a global commodities boom has fizzled, growth in gross domestic product at the start of this year was the slowest since 2009 and further reforms seemed to have petered as an
expected collapse in investment failed to materialise. Analysts now warn the government desperately needs a new approach to get the economy back on track. First on the list, economists say, must be to phase out the huge fuel subsidies that make petrol prices in Indonesia among the cheapest in Asia but gobble up about 20 percent of the state budget. The government of outgoing President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has implemented several limited cuts during a decade in power, but failed to push through radical changes, deterred by popular anger. “On his first day, the next president will have a very limited fund for ministries and government bodies because the money has been used to increase the fuel subsidy,” David Sumual, chief economist of Indonesia’s Bank Central Asia, told AFP. Widodo has pledged to do away with the subsidies entirely, and Prabowo to reduce them substantially. But large cuts will push up inflation -- and hit the millions of poor people the candidates have pledged to help during their campaigns.
JAKARTA - Indonesia’s presidential election campaign has ended following the final presidential debate on Saturday evening. “Today is the final day of all campaign activities. Starting tomorrow July 6 until July 8 no campaign activity is allowed,” General Election Commission (KPU) chief commissioner Husni Kamil Malik said when opening the presidential debate. He also called on the people to set an example for other nations with regard to the implementation of the democracy event. “We must be able to become a role model for other nations in the implementation of democracy especially the general election,” he said. He said he hoped people later would accept whatever the result of the election would be as whoever would be elected he would be the leader of Indonesia. “After the election the presidential and vice presidential candidates that win would be our national leader, the leader of us all and not only one camp. The ultimate winner is the people of Indonesia,” he said. “We hope the campaign teams starting tonight would remind all people to exercise restraint and maintain orderliness. We hope Indonesia would be able to become a role model with its election for other nations,” he said. Four people were still missing and two others were rescued alive after the landslide struck Wednesday near Dageuwo village, Papua province, local search and rescue chief Marsudi told AFP. Rescuers had to fly to the scene of the accident in the country’s easternmost province, as the mountainous, remote area could not be reached by land, said the official, who like many Indonesians goes by one name. All the victims were believed to be illegal miners, he added. Illegal gold mining has boomed in Indonesia in recent years as the price of the precious metal has surged, and deaths are common.But experts warn that the widespread practice of using mercury to extract gold from ore is putting the health of miners at risk and poisoning communities where they work. The United Nations estimates that up to 15 million so-called “artisanal small-scale gold miners” operate in 70 countries worldwide.

U.S. markets are closed Friday for the Fourth of July holiday and trading volumes in other markets were thinner than usual.Crude fell despite signs the U.S. economy is steadily improving, which typically would increase demand for oil. The U.S. government reported that employers added a strong 288,000 workers to their payrolls in June and the unemployment rate fell to 6.1 percent. The positive economic news, however, also strengthened the dollar, a
factor that weighed on oil prices by making crude more expensive — and a less attractive investment — for traders using other currencies. Oil has been sliding since it reached a 10-month closing high of $107.26 on June 20, when concerns had grown over the stunning advance by Islamic militants in controlling Iraqi territory. Since then, it has become clear that there are no imminent disruptions to supplies from Iraq, OPEC’s second biggest producer. On top of that, an agreement in Libya between the central government and a regional militia was expected to lead to the reopening of two eastern oil terminals that would boost the country’s crude exports by about 500,000 barrels a day. Libya currently produces around 350,000 barrels of oil a day.

PITTSBURGH — Richard Mellon Scaife, the billionaire heir to the Mellon banking and oil fortune and a newspaper publisher who funded libertarian and conservative causes and various projects to discredit President Bill Clinton, has died. He was 82. Scaife died early Friday at his home, his newspaper, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, reported. Scaife’s death comes less than two months after he announced in a first-person, front-page story in his Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that he had an untreatable form of cancer. “Some who dislike me may rejoice at the news,” wrote Scaife, who acknowledged making political and other enemies. “Naturally, I can’t share their enthusiasm.” He was the grand-nephew of Andrew Mellon, a banker and secretary of the Treasury who was involved with some of the biggest industrial companies of the early 20th century. Forbes magazine estimated Scaife’s net worth in 2013 at $1.4 billion. The intensely private Scaife became widely known in the 1990s
when first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton said her husband was being attacked by a “vast right-wing conspiracy.” White House staffers and other supporters suggested Scaife was playing a central role in the attack. Several foundations controlled by Scaife gave millions of dollars to organizations run by critics of Clinton, including $1.7 million for a project at the conservative American Spectator magazine to dig up information about his role in the Whitewater real estate scandal. Scaife rarely gave interviews, but in a sit-down with George magazine editor John F. Kennedy Jr. in 1998, he called President Clinton “an embarrassment.” In the interview, Scaife denied that his money helped support an effort to hurt the president, but he suggested Clinton might be linked to the deaths of dozens of administration officials and associates, including White House Deputy Counsel Vince Foster and onetime Commerce Secretary Ron Brown. Thomas Rick Michael (34) was found lifeless by his wife Restu Wilujeng at 6.39 am local time (GMT+7) in their rented house in Banjar Dukuh, Dalung Village, North Kuta, Badung District. The couple were watching television from 9.30 pm local time on Friday, July 4, according to Restu Wilujeng. Then Wilujeng went to the bedroom leaving Michael alone on the couch in front of the television set, where he finally fell asleep. On Saturday Morning, Wilujeng did not find Michael on the couch, and went looking for him in the entire house. She found his body hanging in the backyard of their home. Wilujeng immediately called her relative for help. Michael was undergoing psychiatric therapy in Denpasar for his depression, which he had been suffering from for a long time before marrying Wilujeng. They had rented the house in Dalung residence two years ago and lived there with their son. One of the daily activities of her husband’s was surfing on the beach in Bali, Wilujeng said. Based on preliminary investigations, there were no signs of violence on the victim’s body. The police personnel found a letter of apology and love addressed to his wife Wilujeng, his son and his mother, written in English.

SINGARAJA - Coastal areas of Tinga-Tinga village, Gerokgak, are hit by increasingly severe abrasion. Interestingly, though the abrasion has been taking place nearly for one and a half years, there is no indication if the abrasion will be handled by the government. Coastal revetment on the north of the Agricultural Quarantine Agency looks to have been eroded by ocean waves. Such concrete revetment with the length of about 400 meters to the west has been damaged. Even, ferocity of the ocean waves has also eroded the compound wall of Segara Temple at Tinga-Tinga customary village. Such condition is feared to make local residents difficult during the ceremony. was visited by Deputy Regent of Buleleng, I Nyoman Sutjidra, in 2012. During the visit, local residents appealed to assistance to local government in order that the coastal damage around the temple area could be addressed immediately. The Head of Buleleng Public Works, Nyoman Gede Suryawan, justified if the local government had not yet addressed the coastal abrasion at Tinga-Tinga. He admitted the county government did not have sufficient fund to handle the abrasion. Moreover, the handling of abrasion needed a large number of funds between IDR 15 million and IDR 20 million for each meter of coastal damage. “We are not able to handle the coastal damage (abrasion) because it requires huge funds,” he said. He added the handling of coastal
abrasion in Buleleng relied on the help of financial support from the Bali Public Works and the Bali-Penida River Agency (BWS). He pointed out that in 2014 the coastal damaged funded by the assistance of the Bali-Penida Agency was carried out at Patas village (Gerokgak) and Pengastulan village (Seririt). Meanwhile, the coastal abrasion at Tinga-Tinga was not included in the list of the proposed activities funded by the Bali-Penida River Agency and the Bali Public Works. To ensure the condition on the TingaTinga Beach, Suryawan promised to check the proposal on the coastal abrasion management having been submitted to the Bali Public Works and Bali-Penida River Agency. Jaja gadang tain temuati is one of the traditional cakes of community in Bali. It is called jaja gadang tain temuati because it is green (gadang) and has the shape of small round worm excrement (tain temuati). This very tender and sweet cake exudes a very typical flavor. Moreover, it is very safe to consume because the ingredients and coloring agent are made of organic substance.
THE main ingredient is rice flour mixed with green leaf extract produced by daun suji or dracaena leaf. It is used to make the cake look greenish as well as engender a delicious flavor, and fragrance. To serve the cake, it is put onto a small dish and then sprinkled with grated coconut and brown sugar sauce. On days of yore, the cake was presented with a tekor (dish-shaped banana leaf). This cake is usually served when people held grandiose religious ceremonies (engaging villagers). But now, the traditional cake is very rare. Aside from being difficult and complicated preparation, the ingredient in use is also of selected rice
processed manually. Preparations: first of all, the selected rice is soaked with clean water for about 6 hours. After that, the rice is made into flour by means of crushing. The flour is then clenched into the shape of balls. Then, steam all the batters until cooked or for 15 minutes. Take out the cooked flour and then mixed with the extract of dracaena leaf and give a small amount of starch to make it sticky. Unlike in the past, to make the batter sticky people usually used cassava. Later on, the flour batter is crushed and kneaded until refined. Subsequently, the batter is formed by using coconut shell mold having
many small holes. This mold is put on the flour and then driven while rolling it. From the holes of coconut shell mold will come out a cake resembling the earth worm excrement. Afterward, the cake is placed on a banana leaf and then steamed again for about 15 minutes. When having cooked, the cake is taken out and cooled. For the presentation, the cake should be removed from the banana leaves one by one. Then, put them on the plate and sprinkle with grated coconut and brown sugar sauce. To sprinkle the sugar, use banana leaf whose end has been torn up resembling a brush. Having sprinkled it evenly, the cake is ready to serve.

The Jembrana Agriculture, Livestock and Plantation Agency intensely performed mass vaccination of dogs at each village in Jembrana. A number of rabies dog bite incidents remained to happen and got serious attention from the agency. The Head of Jembrana Agriculture, Livestock and Plantation Agency, Ketut Wiratma, said on Friday (Jul 4) there were eight locations of dog bite occurred in March and April. They mostly happened in Mendoyo subdistrict. All the biting dogs were declared positive to rabies based on the results of
laboratory test. Currently, the agency was undertaking a mass vaccination program targeting 33,000 dogs. According to him, Jembrana was still vigilant to rabies. He also hoped the low people’s awareness of vaccinating their dog could be increased. Meanwhile, the Head of Jembrana Health Agency, Putu Suasta, said the threat of rabies in Jembrana could happen any time. The increasing incident of dog bite cases should be alerted even though the bite cases by dogs declared positive to rabies had decreased. NEGARA - The effort to evacuate the goods transported by trucks in the Pancar Indah LCT on Saturday (Jul 5) was hampered by high waves in the waters of Gilimanuk where the vessel ran aground. The evacuation led by the Team Leader, Poliman, from the ASDP crossing authority, utilized the Trans Jawa LCT, Trima Jaya IX LCT vessel and involved dozens of people. The evacuation process was quite difficult because the waves were very high. In the evacuation effort, the Bali Naval Base Commander, Julius Widjojono, accompanied by the Gilimanuk Naval Post Commander Putu Ratmaya also participated in the monitoring. He clarified there was no looting in the vessel and it had been anticipated. People just picked up the falling and scattered stuff. Six personnel were stationed for supervision patrol. Meanwhile, the evacuation of trucks and other vehicles were waiting for the crane. Currently, the effort was only focused on minimizing the losses. Poliman, the evacuation team leader, said the evacuation of goods in the vessel was estimated to take place for four days. According to him, the evacuation on Saturday had reached 50 percent of the items by using manual labor. The goods evacuated included basic necessities, marble, beverage, animal feed, LPG cylinder and others. A driver of truck with license plate DR 8524 AA, Nyoman Tilik, from South Denpasar, said that he held 475 sacks of cement. Based on information, the Pancar Indah LCT vessel carried the freight in imbalanced condition. RAMALLAH, West Bank — An autopsy showed an Arab teenager who Palestinians say was killed in a revenge attack was burned to death, officials said Saturday, while Palestinian militants fired two rockets toward a major southern city deeper into Israel than any other attack in the current round of violence. large protests in his east Jerusalem neighborhood, suffered burns on “90 percent of his body.” “The results show he was breathing while on fire and died from burns and their consequences,” al-Owaiwi said. His account provided the first details of the preliminary findings to be made public. The Israeli Health Ministry could not be reached for comment. The autopsy found evidence that Abu Khdeir had breathed in the flames as burns were found inside his body, in his lungs, bronchial tubes and his throat, al-Owaiwi said. He also said the young man had suffered wounds on the right side of his head apparently from impact with a rock or another hard object. Abu Khdeir’s charred body was found in a forest Wednesday after he was seized near his home. Palestinians immediately accused Israeli extremists of killing him to avenge the deaths of three Israeli teens who had been abducted and killed in the West Bank. Israeli police said an investigation is still underway and they have not yet determined who killed the boy or why. The gunmen also attacked Gamba police station, Kenya’s police chief David Kimaiyo said. Hindi is about 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Mpeketoni where dozens were killed in an attack last month, while Gamba is about 70 kilometers (43 miles) northwest of Mpeketoni. The Kenya Red Cross said nine people were killed in Hindi, while in Gamba nine others were killed and one person was missing. The
nine victims in Gamba included five inmates said to be non-Muslim, who were killed when the gunmen attacked the police station, said a senior police officer who insisted on anonymity because he was not authorized to speak with the media. Three other inmates escaped with the gunmen. The officer said the gunmen got to the police station by car-jacking a truck and killing its three occupants. Five police officers were wounded in the attack and one officer was killed, he said. Kenya has suffered a spate of gun and explosive attacks since deploying its troops in Oct. 2011 to fight al-Shabab militants.
Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for an attack last month on the town of Mpeketoni on the Kenyan coast and another attack the following day on a nearby village. Despite that, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and the interior minister have blamed local political networks for those attacks and said they were planned locally — assertions that have been met with skepticism. Late last month police arrested Lamu Governor Issa Timamy and have charged him for murder, forceful eviction of population and terrorism charges in connection to the Mpeketoni attacks.

PARIS — A new attraction inspired by the Disney movie “Ratatouille” is scheduled to open July 10 at Disneyland Paris. It will be the first ride at any Disney park based on the 2007 animated movie about a rat named Remy who is a gifted French chef. The dark ride offers what the park describes as a “comical, rat’s eye view” of Remy’s world, beginning on the rooftops of Paris, continuing in “ratmobiles” through a restaurant’s cold storage area, and into a dining room overseen by an intimidating chef. In French, the attraction is called Ratatouille : L’Aventure Totalement Toquee (toe-kay) de Remy. In English, it’s Ratatouille: The Totally Zany Adventures of Remy. The area includes a restaurant, Bistrot Chez Remy, and a boutique that opens at the end of the year.
Foreign guests stayed for 3.5 days on the average in May as against 3.62 days in April, Head of the provincial Central Statistics Agency (BPS) office Panusunan Siregar said on Sunday. An increase, however, was recorded by one-star hotels and four-star hotels, Siregars noted. “Domestic guests stayed for 3.08 days in May as against 3.36 days on the average in April,” he said. In one star hotels foreign guests stayed for 3.63 days on the average in May longer than an average of 3.5 days in April and four star hotels the length of stay rose to 4.03 days from 3.6 days, he said. Two star hotels recorded a length of stay of only 2.97 days almost one day shorter than 3.9 days in April. Similarly the length of stay declined to 3.09 days from 4.27 days for three-star hotels and to 3.36 days from 3.49 days for fivestar hotels on the average. Meanwhile, domestic guests spent fewer days in one-star hotels averaging 4.38 days in May as against 8 days in April, and in four star hotels averaging 3.08 days in May as against 4.41 days in April, and in five-star hotel averaging 3.48 days in May as against 4.41 days in April. However, they spent more days in two-star hotels averaging 2.6 days in May as against 2.12 days in April and in three-star hotels averaging 3.07 days from 2.98 days. In May, Bali recorded 286,033 visits by foreign tourists, up 14.35 percent from the same period in 2013 or an increase of 2.12 percent from April, 2014. The art troupe from Bangli, Yoh Pongsri, seemed to be able to play this instrument very well. This kind of musical instrument became very popular in Bali during the 1950s. Genggong is a kind of jaw harp used in the music of Bali. It consists of a wooden frame and tongue cut from a single piece of the leaf stem of the sugar palm. The left end is held firmly against the cheek, while a string tied to the right end is jerked rhythmically to set the tongue into motion (in contrast to other jaw harps in which the tongue itself is plucked to produce sound). Different harmonics are produced by pronouncing different vowel sounds. Very much a folk instrument, genggong was traditionally played only as a solo instrument or with small numbers of other genggong as informal entertainment. Since the 1930s, however, genggong has often featured in gamelan genggong, a larger ensemble of several genggong together with suling and percussion instruments. Usually, Genggong used to accompany the performance of ballet with the storyline Godongan (giant frog). It was commonly performed in every Hindu ritual, and other spiritual events. This rare type of music is not as popular as the gong kebyar gamelan music. It is very rare and can be found in Karangasem, Batuan village, Gianyar and the Munduk Lumbang, Baturiti, Tabanan. Now, this kind of art is presented more attractively. Elements of the dance, theater and vocal music are nicely arranged. New ideas are also developed so as to achieve the necessary perfection of the society today. This composition reveals the visual sound, without story but illustrates the frog character such as when it is walking and expressing its behavior in the community group. Although it is small, the quality is maintained, does not impoverish the existing arts. During the performance at BAF, the art troupe presented several songs. (wan)

GIANYAR - A restaurant in the area of Ubud, Green Leaf Restaurant, located on Jalan Monkey Forest, Padangtegal hamlet, Ubud, caught fire early Friday (Jul 4). The dwellers around the tourist area were made surprised. Two units of fire truck were brought to the scene to assist fire fighting, so that the fire did not enlarge. The fire was just known around 02:15 a.m. At that time, pecalang or customary security guard of Padangtegal, Ubud, were patrolling and suddenly saw sparks in the restaurant. Then, the security guards approached the location. The fire was seen to have been burning the building to the top. Immediately, the incident was reported to Ubud Police. Two units of fire truck of Gianyar came to the scene to assist in extinguishing the fire. Soon, the fire could be extinguished. The restaurant building with an area of 5 x 20 meters was on fire, but did not claim any casualties. Allegedly, the fire was estimated to be kindled by the sparks due to short circuit. The roof top of restaurant building made of combustible materials such as wood, bamboo and plaited bamboo wall burned out. Due to the incident, the owner of restaurant, I Made Ardika, considered the fire engulfing his business was a disaster. Chief of Ubud Police, Wayan Sumara, said that after receiving the report regarding the fire incident, police officers were assigned to come down to the scene to investigate the source of fire causing the top of the building to be on fire. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

ALBANY — Paul McCartney returned to a concert stage Saturday after being sidelined for two months because of a virus, spinning out songs from the Beatles, Wings and a solo career that has spanned more than 50 years of rock ‘n’ roll. “It’s great to be back,” said McCartney, who turned 72 two weeks ago. He looked none the worse for wear, putting on a show of just under three hours with 38 songs before finishing with the three-song medley that ends the “Abbey Road” album. McCartney was briefly hospitalized in Tokyo in May because of the viral infection. The illness forced him to cancel a Japanese tour and a concert in South Korea and reschedule half a dozen June dates in the United States before resuming his “Out There” tour in Albany. DENPASAR - The effort of Bali government to suppress the poor population growth has not showed a result. Data of Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) of Bali, mentioned if the number of poor people in the past six months (September 2013-March 2014) increased to the tune of 2,430 people. “The number of poor people in March 2014 reached 185,200 people, whereas in last September amounted to 182,770 people, so there is an increase of 0.04 percent.
We see the development of poverty in Bali is quite volatile,” said the Head of BPS Bali, Panusunan Siregar, in Denpasar. He explained the percentage
of poor people in March 2011 until September 2011 showed an increase, but in the period of September 2011 to September 2012 showed a decrease. However, the percentage of poor people in the period of March 2013 to March 2014 continued to rise. “The factors encouraging poverty rate to rise in Bali include inflation, contraction in the agricultural sector and increase in basic needs,” he said. According to him, the inflation
occurred from the third quarter of 2013 through the first quarter of 2014 reached 1.67 percent in rural areas of Bali. At the same period, the inflation also actually occurred in urban areas. It showed that people in rural areas were more susceptible to the effects of inflation than those in urban areas due to the rise of rural poverty, while in urban areas it actually fell. Meanwhile, negative growth also occurred in the agricultural sector
by 1.95 percent. At same time, there was an increase in the retail price of some basic necessities in Bali such as rice (0.90 percent), cooking oil (4.25 percent) and cayenne pepper (71.65 percent). “When viewed from the area where they live, the poor population in urban areas shows a decrease of 3,130 people.
