Jordan king calls for review of bill that sparked protests

Jordan’s King Abdullah II called for a review of a controversial draft tax law Tuesday as anti-austerity protesters staged another night of demonstrations in Amman and trade unions vowed to hold a general strike later Wednesday. For nearly a week, the capital and other cities have been hit by angry rallies against reforms backed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that have brought repeated price hikes. Prime Minister Hani Mulki stepped down on Monday in an effort to quell the unrest but his departure -- and King Abdullah’s call to review the law -- appear to have done little to reduce public anger. On Tuesday evening, protesters held another mass rally in Amman after breaking their Ramadan fast, jostling with police and waving Jordanian flags. Trade unions said the law review was a “positive” step but nonetheless called for a general strike on Wednesday. Many demonstrators said they wanted more than Mulki’s departure. “We want new people who really want to bring in reforms, we do not want politicians from the same circles who only want to solve the IMF’s problems by stealing money from the people’s pockets,” one male protester, who declined to give his name, told AFP. Another, who gave his first name as Khalil, said Jordan’s political system, which grants the monarchy vast executive powers, should become more democratic and ac-

countable. “We must elect the government, so that when errors are made they will be responsible to the people who elected them,” he said. In a letter charging new premier Omar al-Razzaz with forming a government, King Abdullah II said it “must carry out a comprehensive review of the tax system” to avoid “unjust taxes that do not achieve justice and balance between the incomes of the poor and the rich”. Late Monday, the king had warned Jordan was “at a crossroads”, blaming the economic woes on regional instability, the burden of hosting hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees and a lack of international support. ‘Bali Nine’ drug smuggler dies in prison: official

A member of the infamous Bali Nine drug smuggling gang has died of stomach cancer, an Indonesian justice ministry official said Tuesday. Tan Duc Thanh Nguyen, 34, was serving a life sentence for his role in trying to traffic heroin from the resort island of Bali back to Australia in 2005. The group became known as the Bali Nine and its ringleaders, Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan, were executed by firing squad in 2015. Nguyen -- who was rarely in the media spotlight -- was also sentenced to death before the Indonesian Supreme Court later reduced his term to life imprisonment. He succumbed to the terminal illness last month but his death in a Jakarta prison was only announced this week. “Tan Duc Thanh Nguyen died of stomach cancer in Jakarta on May 19,” justice ministry spokesman Ade Kusmanto told AFP. Nguyen and two other Australians were arrested shortly after other members of the trafficking gang were detained at the island’s international airport. None of the three had drugs on them at the time, but police found 350 grams of heroin in a suitcase in their hotel room. The execution of Sukumaran and Chan sparked a diplomatic row between Australia and Indonesia. The remaining six members of the gang are still in prison.(afp)

DENPASAR —Bali provincial government is preparing a budget of IDR 1 billion for cultural parade to enliven the IMF-World Bank meetings. The activity resembles the parade of the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) posing the request from the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo. It happens because the president familiarly addressed as Jokowi admitted to get impressed with the BAF parade.

Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, said the parade at the IMF-World Bank meeting is an opportunity to more actively show off Balinese art and culture to the world. Location of the parade can be done around Renon, Denpasar or Nusa Dua becoming the venue of the meeting. “Most likely it will be held in Nusa Dua, but if in Nusa Dua, it means the scale is smaller because it cannot be done like in Renon. With TV ads, drugmaker Gilead brings HIV prevention drug out of the closet IN a major shift, pharmaceutical giant Gilead Sciences will begin airing television ads for PrEP, its HIV prevention medication. The company said the ads, which will start in June and run through August, are “designed to encourage candid conversations around sexual health and promote public awareness of HIV prevention.” PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, involves taking a daily pill to prevent HIV transmission. Major clinical trials have shown that PrEP — also known by its brand name, Truvada — is safe and effective at preventing HIV if taken daily. The pill is also recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for at-risk groups. Since the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Truvada for HIV prevention in 2012, Gilead has leaned on public health agencies to promote the drug. New York City has for years placed advertisements on subways and buses to promote PrEP, and the District of Columbia’s health department aired its own racy HIV PrEP television

ad earlier this year. On paper, Gilead has spent paltry sums to promote Truvada — just several hundred thousand dollars per year in direct advertising, according to MM&M, versus more than $100 million to promote Hepatitis C drug Harvoni in 2017 alone. Gilead said it has granted more than $28 million to approximately 120 organizations since 2012 to support their efforts to promote PrEP, an average of less than $5 million a year. The name of Gilead’s new ad campaign is “Healthysexual,” and its first TV spot is a 30-second ad titled “Honestly.” Those featured in the ad include a gay couple, a transgender woman and young people of color — groups disproportionately affected by HIV. Their small and unusual study suggests that doctors should try fecal transplants right off when patients in the hospital get infected with Clostridium difficile, a frequent cause of diarrhea in frail and sick patients. Their carefully cultivated and curated samples cured half the patients who tried them right away, the Norwegian team reported in the New England Journal of Medicine. And most of those that weren’t cured with a single transplant saw their diarrhea clear up when they were given antibiotics later. “This was a small trial, but the results suggest that fecal microbiota transplantation may be an alternative to antibiotic

C. difficile, C. diff for short, is an increasingly common danger to patients in the hospital. C. difficile infections kill 29,000 Americans a year and make 450,000 sick in the U.S. alone, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It causes unremitting diarrhea, which can weaken patients being treated for pneumonia, cancer and other illnesses. Right now, antibiotics can make patients even sicker because they kill not only the C. difficile, but so-called good bacteria that keep things in balance. DENPASAR — Throughout May 2018, Denpasar underwent deflation of -0.03 percent when compared to the previous month, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 129.45. The deflation in May 2018 was the first time in the past five years. Singaraja also experienced deflation of - 0.33 percent with CPI of 140.91. Head of Bali Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Adi Nugroho, said the same month of last year always underwent inflation. Similarly, during the period of January-April 2018, Denpasar also experienced high inflation. However, if the CPI of May 2018 compared to May 2017 (yoy), it indicated inflation of 3.08 percent. If the CPI is accumulated from January to May 2018, there is also inflation of 1.79 percent. Contributors of deflation included food prices accounting for 0.1764 percent and the price of housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel groups contributing to deflation by 0.0034 percent. “The deflation occurred due to some factors, where one of them is caused by the government efforts to control prices that have showed encouraging results,” he said. Out of 82 CPI cities, there were 17 cities experiencing deflation. The highest deflation was recorded in Pangkal Pinang (Bangka Belitung Islands) of 0.99 percent and the lowest was recorded in Pematang Siantar (North Sumatra) by 0.01 percent. Meanwhile, the highest inflation was recorded in Tual (Maluku) of 1.88 percent and the lowest in Purwokerto (Central Java) and Tangerang (Banten) respectively by 0.01 percent. If sorted from the highest deflation, Denpasar is ranked 15th out of 17 cities experiencing deflation. Similar to Denpasar, Singaraja also experienced inflation if calculated from January to May being equal to 0.90 percent. In yearover-year (yoy), Singaraja also experienced inflation of 2.61 percent. However, if the CPI in May is compared to April, it shows deflation of 0.33 percent. Deflation is indicated by a decrease in index of the housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel group by 0.74 percent and foodstuff by 0.68 percent. The commodities recorded to contribute to deflation in May 2018 in Singaraja include some commodities such as rice, sand, brick, tuna, cayenne pepper, red pepper, vegetable tomatoes, bottled water and cucumber. Out of 82 CPI cities, 17 cities experienced deflation and 65 other cities experienced inflation. The highest deflation was recorded in Pangkal Pinang (Bangka Belitung Islands) of 0.99 percent and the lowest was recorded in Pematang Siantar (North Sumatra) by 0.01 percent. Boosting revenue through asset, rental price rearranged

DENPASAR — The regionally generated revenue (PAD) of Bali province is dominated by motor vehicle tax and motor vehicle title transfer tax. In 2018, the regionally generated revenue of motor vehicle tax was projected to reach IDR 1.254 trillion, while the motor vehicle title transfer tax was worth IDR 1.141 trillion. Based on the data at the Bali Revenue Services as of December 31, 2017, there were 2,988,356 units of active vehicles in Bali. Of this number, a total of 2,501,217 units are motorcycles. The number of motorcycles is found fewer when compared to that of 2013 where according to BPS it reaches 2,586,715 units, which further increased to 3,015,287 units of motorcycles until 2015. Bali provincial government is currently trying to boost the regionally generated revenue from other sectors. It is started by proposing two bills in the Bali House of Representatives some time ago. They are bills on Land Use Control of Local Government and the Result of Separated Regional Wealth Management and Other Legally Regionally Generated Revenue. The bill on Land Use Control of Local Government is closely related to the optimization of assets owned by the Bali provincial government. “We will discuss further these bills because there are many asset problems in Bali. Later, the zoning will be arranged based on the lease or profit sharing, which one belongs to business, tourism area or agricultural area,” said Chairman of Bill Special Committee on Land Use Control of Local Government,

Meanwhile, the Head of Special Committee of Bills on the Result of Separated Regional Wealth Management and Other Legally Regionally Generated Revenue, Tjok Gede Asmara Putra Sukawati, said the formation of this bill is primarily to optimize non-tax revenue. The results of separated regional wealth management is divided into two categories namely, the return on investment in local government-owned enterprise (BUMD) such as Perusda, Puri Raharja Hospital, Jamkrida Bali Mandara, including PT. Bali Semesta Mandiri (BSM) and PT. Mergantaka Mandala (RPH Temesi), as well as the return on equity participation in private owned companies such as BPD Bali, Asuransi Bangun Askrida, and Jasamarga Bali Tol. “The BPD in particular included in the category of private companies will still be consulted to the Ministry of Home Affairs,” he added. Head of the Badung Culture Agency, Ida Bagus Anom Bhasma, said the fire war is a unique tradition remaining to be preserved by all communities of Tuban customary village. Therefore, his agency registered the fire war tradition as an intangible cultural heritage to the central government. “This (Siat Geni) is a unique

tradition and in accordance with the theme of BAF, the Fire of Spirit of Creation. This tradition will also be registered as an intangible cultural heritage to the central government. It will be displayed at the opening parade,” said IB Anom Bhasma, on Tuesday (Jun. 5). According to him, it will bring thousands of artists of Badung to

follow every series of the annual cultural extravaganza held by the provincial government of Bali at Ardha Candra Amphitheater of Denpasar Art Center. “At the opening parade, there will be 500 artists involved of the totally 4,650 artists. They belong to 27 sekaa or art troupes. Obviously, according to the message of the

regent, we will participate in all the categories,” he explained. He said that Badung district government has made preparation to participate in the art event to be held on June 7. Asian markets rise as China trade report lifts optimism

Asian markets rose on Wednesday as investors look ahead to a Group of Seven summit, while reports that China-US trade talks were progressing well provided some support.

The gains extend a broad rally across the region in recent days as optimism in the US economy, the world’s biggest, has helped temper geopolitical worries. The Nasdaq hit another record in New York even as the lead from US traders was generally tepid, but eyes are now on the Quebec gathering of G7 leaders, with world trade high on the agenda after Donald Trump hit Canada, Mexico and the European Union with steel and aluminium tariffs. The move was condemned by Washington’s allies, with Mexico on Tuesday announcing measures on a range of US goods from pork to bourbon, just as it holds trilateral talks on a long-standing deal with Canada and the US. However, Bloomberg News reported that China had offered to ramp up purchases of various US goods during talks this week, while Washington would ease US buying restrictions on Chinese telecom-equipment giant ZTE. “The president is expected to meet with his advisers on whether to move forward with this proposal or not. It has the ring of truth around it given the Chinese said the other day that all bets are off the table if the US imposes the tariffs,” said Greg McKenna, chief market strategist at AxiTrader. “They’ve thus offered both the carrot and the stick.”

At a press conference with visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the French leader called on “everyone to stabilise the situation and not give into this escalation which would lead to only one thing: conflict.” He said that the Iranian decision to expand its nuclear infrastructure did not constitute grounds for quitting a 2015 deal designed to stop Iran getting a nuclear bomb. The deal hangs by a thread after the US withdrew last month -- a move applauded by Iran’s arch-foe Israel -- but so far fellow signatories France, Britain, Germany, China, Russia and the EU, have stood firm. In a rebuke of the US pullout Macron said that Iran’s riposte “simply shows that when you decide to unilaterally end an accord it does not encourage the other party to respect it.” Netanyahu, who has vigorously opposed the accord, said he had not attempted to convince Macron to abandon it. “I did not ask President Macron to leave the deal. Last month, the government proposed a new income tax law, yet to be approved by parliament, aimed at raising taxes on employees by at least five percent and on companies by between 20 and 40 percent. It was the latest in a series of austerity measures since Amman secured a $723-million loan from the IMF in 2016. Since January, resource-poor Jordan, which suffers from high unemployment and poverty, has seen repeated price rises including for staples such as bread, as well as extra taxes on basic goods. Fuel prices have risen five times since the start of the year, while electricity bills have surged by 55 percent since February. The measures have sparked some of the biggest economic protests in five years. After a two-hour meeting Tuesday afternoon, head of the trade unions’ council Ali alAbous called on Jordan’s new premier to “open a constructive dialogue” with the unions and civil society groups “to get out of this impasse that the draft income tax law has put us in”. The head of Jordan’s Bar Association, Mazen Arshidat, said the unions “were determined to withdraw” the tax reform bill. - Resignation ‘not enough’ Jordan, a key US ally, has largely avoided the unrest witnessed by other countries in the region since the Arab Spring re-

ALOTENANGO - Nearly 200 people are missing and at least 75 have been killed since Guatemala’s Fuego volcano began erupting over the weekend, officials said Tuesday. Seven communities in already devastated areas were evacuated as the volcano’s activity increased, with rescue operations halted. In the city of Escuintla, near the summit, panicked locals rushed to their cars to escape, causing chaotic traffic. An AFP photographer saw a large plume of ash rise into the sky, prompting an evacuation of everyone authorities could find before the police, the military and rescuers were ordered to stand down. And a total of 192 people remain missing since the weekend eruptions, disaster relief agency chief Sergio Cabanas told reporters. The search for bodies in mountain villages destroyed by the eruption was progressing slowly, officials said earlier, given the nature of the terrain and the way the volcano released large amounts of

boiling mud, rock and ash down the mountain. “We will continue until we find the last victim, though we do not know how many there are. We will probe the area as many times as necessary,” Cabanas told AFP. However, the prospects of finding any more survivors was poor, he said. “If you are trapped in a pyroclastic flow, it’s hard to come out of it alive,” he said, adding that people who may have been caught in the flow may never be found. Among the latest of the 75 fatalities reported by the National Institute of Forensic Sciences was a 42-year-old woman who died in hospital having lost both legs and an arm in the eruption. The previous toll was given as 73. Some 46 people were injured, around half of whom are in serious

condition, officials said. The 3,763-meter (12,346-foot) volcano erupted early Sunday, spewing out towering plumes of ash and a hail of fiery rock fragments with scalding mud. Authorities said more than 1.7 million people had been affected by the disaster, including more than 3,000 ordered evacuated, many living in shelters in Escuintla, Sacatepequez and Chimaltenango since Sunday’s eruption. The speed of the eruption took locals by surprise, and could be explained by it producing pyroclastic flows, sudden emissions of gas and rock fragments, rather than lava, said volcanologist David Rothery of Britain’s Open University. Isolated Russia aims to bring football to the fore at World Cup

An isolated Russia throws open its doors in a week for a World Cup full of glitz and glamour designed to bring in the hosts from the cold. The month-long celebration of the world’s most popular sport has been haunted by fears over racism and violence as well as diplomatic spats. But Vladimir Putin has left no stone unturned making sure the biggest -- and most controversyladen -- event Russia has seen since Moscow’s 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics seduces a sceptical world. Twelve sparkling stadiums in 11 cities spanning the European portion of the world’s largest country are ready after getting their last licks of paint. And superstars ranging from Brazil’s Neymar to Argentina’s Lionel Messi and Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo are all healed up and rearing to fight for the right to hoist the glittering Jules Rimet Trophy on July 15. Almost every second person on Earth tuned into the last edition of the spectacular in Brazil in 2014. That tournament saw the hosts suffer a traumatic 7-1 beating by Germany in the semi-finals that left a nation obsessed by football in shock. Eventual champions Germany and Brazil again top a list of favourites that also includes Spain and past winners Argentina and France.

Russia’s chances of doing something special are modest. The hosts are the second-lowest ranked team of the 32 in the final and are riven by internal squabbles and injuries. Putin counters that Russia will come out tops simply by pulling off the most expensive World Cup ever staged while struggling under the weight of international sanctions. “The organisers,” said Putin when asked to pick this year’s likely winner. - Sanctions and boycotts The West’s penalties are a response to an ever more aggressive foreign policy Putin has pushed in the eight years since securing the hosting rights over England in a vote tainted by bribery charges. Russia has annexed Crimea from Ukraine and defied the West by unleashing a bombing campaign in support of Bashar al-Assad in Syria. Yet Putin has emerged from all this looking as strong as ever. The Kremlin also does little to hide its pleasure at seeing the effective failure of efforts by some in England and eastern Europe to organise a diplomatic boycott of Putin’s party. England will not be sending diplomats or royalty to the opening ceremony in protest over the Skripal case. Sweden and Iceland along with a few others may follow suit by keeping their prime ministers and heads of state home. But Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said last week he expected to see a “heavy traffic of guests at the highest level” coming to matches. - Racism and riots Russia’s problems do not end in the high-brow world of international relations. The bloody beating English fans got at the hands of nearly 200 Russian thugs at Euro 2016 in France has plagued preparations as much as any dispute with

the West. Neo-Nazi hooligans who organise mass fights in forests and chant racist slurs at players have lorded over Russian stadiums for years. The anti-discrimination network Fare said Russia’s football federation was making matters worse by punishing those who reacted to racist abuse “while ignoring the perpetrators”. Security services have either locked up or checked in on hundreds of hoodlums to make sure they do nothing to tarnish Russia’s image in the coming weeks. The scare tactics have worked. Some football gang members say they will be skipping town once the games begin to avoid getting rounded up. “However, we do not have as much confidence in the prevention of non-violent racist incidents (at the World Cup), despite the many well intentioned reassurances,” Fare said in a report issued last week. - Neymar and Neuer Yet the world’s focus in the final week before kickoff will not be on politics or Russia’s underworld but things like Neymar’s right foot. Argentina-Israel friendly called off: Israel embassy Argentina’s upcoming friendly with Israel in Jerusalem has been cancelled, the Israeli embassy confirmed on Tuesday, citing unspecified threats against Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi. The World Cup warmup match had been scheduled to take place on Saturday. But its status had been placed in doubt earlier, following protests by Palestinian football authorities who had urged Messi not to take part. “The Embassy of Israel regrets to communicate the suspension of the match between Israel and Argentina,” a statement said, referring to “threats and provocations” against Messi. Local media had reported earlier Tuesday that the game was set to be scrapped, depriving Messi and his team-mates of a final warm-up game before they open their World Cup campaign in Russia. Argentine Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie told reporters in Washington on the sidelines of the Organization of American States meeting that he believed Argentina’s players had been reluctant to travel to Israel for the game. “As far as I know, the players of the national team were not willing to play the game,” Faurie said before confirmation of the game’s cancellation. PARIS - French President Emmanuel Macron warned of the risk of “conflict” in the standoff with Iran after Tehran announced plans to boost its uranium enrichment capacity as Europe scrambles to save a beleaguered nuclear deal. At a press conference with visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the French leader called on “everyone to stabilise the situation and not give into this escalation which would lead to only one thing: conflict.” He said that the Iranian decision to expand its nuclear infrastructure did not constitute grounds for quitting a 2015 deal designed to stop Iran getting a nuclear bomb. The deal hangs by a thread after the US withdrew last month -- a move applauded by Iran’s arch-foe Israel -- but so far fellow signatories France, Britain, Germany, China, Russia and the EU, have stood firm. In a rebuke of the US pullout Macron said that Iran’s riposte “simply shows that when you decide to unilaterally end an accord it does not encourage the other party to respect it.” Netanyahu, who has vigorously opposed the accord, said he had not attempted to convince Macron to abandon it. “I did not ask President Macron to leave the deal. Last month, the government proposed a new income tax law, yet to be approved by parliament, aimed at raising taxes on employees by at least five percent and on companies by between 20 and 40 percent. It was the latest in a series of austerity measures since Amman secured a $723-million loan from the IMF in 2016. Since January, resource-poor Jordan, which suffers from high unemployment and poverty, has seen repeated price rises including for staples such as bread, as well as extra taxes on basic goods. Fuel prices have risen five times since the start of the year, while electricity bills have surged by 55 percent since February. The measures have sparked some of the biggest economic protests in five years. After a two-hour meeting Tuesday afternoon, head of the trade unions’ council Ali alAbous called on Jordan’s new premier to “open a constructive dialogue” with the unions and civil society groups “to get out of this impasse that the draft income tax law has put us in”. The head of Jordan’s Bar Association, Mazen Arshidat, said the unions “were determined to withdraw” the tax reform bill. - Resignation ‘not enough’ Jordan, a key US ally, has largely avoided the unrest witnessed by other countries in the region since the Arab Spring re-

Nearly 200 missing, 75 dead from Guatemala volcano

ALOTENANGO - Nearly 200 people are missing and at least 75 have been killed since Guatemala’s Fuego volcano began erupting over the weekend, officials said Tuesday. Seven communities in already devastated areas were evacuated as the volcano’s activity increased, with rescue operations halted. In the city of Escuintla, near the summit, panicked locals rushed to their cars to escape, causing chaotic traffic. An AFP photographer saw a large plume of ash rise into the sky, prompting an evacuation of everyone authorities could find before the police, the military and rescuers were ordered to stand down. And a total of 192 people remain missing since the weekend eruptions, disaster relief agency chief Sergio Cabanas told reporters. The search for bodies in mountain villages destroyed by the eruption was progressing slowly, officials said earlier, given the nature of the terrain and the way the volcano released large amounts of

boiling mud, rock and ash down the mountain. “We will continue until we find the last victim, though we do not know how many there are. We will probe the area as many times as necessary,” Cabanas told AFP. However, the prospects of finding any more survivors was poor, he said. “If you are trapped in a pyroclastic flow, it’s hard to come out of it alive,” he said, adding that people who may have been caught in the flow may never be found. Among the latest of the 75 fatalities reported by the National Institute of Forensic Sciences was a 42-year-old woman who died in hospital having lost both legs and an arm in the eruption. The previous toll was given as 73. Some 46 people were injured, around half of whom are in serious

condition, officials said. The 3,763-meter (12,346-foot) volcano erupted early Sunday, spewing out towering plumes of ash and a hail of fiery rock fragments with scalding mud. Authorities said more than 1.7 million people had been affected by the disaster, including more than 3,000 ordered evacuated, many living in shelters in Escuintla, Sacatepequez and Chimaltenango since Sunday’s eruption. The speed of the eruption took locals by surprise, and could be explained by it producing pyroclastic flows, sudden emissions of gas and rock fragments, rather than lava, said volcanologist David Rothery of Britain’s Open University. Rare Sulawesi bear cuscus born in captivity for first time

The first Sulawesi bear cuscus to have been born in captivity is thriving at a zoo in Poland, but staff said they only realised the rare tiny marsupial had arrived when its mother’s pouch began to move. “It must have been a couple of weeks, or even months, after it was born that we noticed something moving inside the female’s pouch and then, a tail popped out!” Radoslaw Ratajszczak, director of the Wroclaw Zoo in south-eastern Poland, told AFP on Tuesday via telephone. “It’s the first time the species has been born in captivity,” he said of the animal whose survival

is threatened by hunting and deforestation in its natural habitat on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. The baby was most likely born the size of a “small bean” six months ago, according to Ratajszczak, who said the youngster is now much larger and often ventures out of mother’s pouch. But zoo staff have not yet had the chance to have a really close look. “We haven’t named it yet,

because we don’t know the sex yet,” he said. Very little is known about the species, which is vaguely reminiscent of the Koala and lives in Sulawesi’s dwindling forests where it has nearly been hunted to death by locals. - ‘Vulnerable’ “We know next to nothing about this species, it’s breeding habits or

its numbers in the wild because it has never been studied in the wild,” said the zoo director, who has spent time on the island, trying to discover more about the species. Also known as Ailurops ursinus, its Latin name, and the Sulawesi bear phalanger, the IUCN Red List of threatened species lists it as “vulnerable”. The population is projected to decline by more than 30 percent over the next decade due to the high rate of deforestation and hunting. A biologist who has authored several books in Poland about rare

species, says that the diurnal nature of the cuscus makes it an easy target for hunters. “They are leaf eaters, staying exposed on large branches during the day and locals seem to find them tasty,” he said, adding that his zoo intends to sponsor field research on Sulawesi by a local scientist. There are six members of the species in Europe, according to Ratajszczak, including the three at the Wroclaw Zoo, another potential breeding pair at the Usti nad Labem Zoo in the Czech Republic and one at a zoo in Belgium.(afp)

Asian markets rise as China trade report lifts optimism

Asian markets rose on Wednesday as investors look ahead to a Group of Seven summit, while reports that China-US trade talks were progressing well provided some support.

The gains extend a broad rally across the region in recent days as optimism in the US economy, the world’s biggest, has helped temper geopolitical worries. The Nasdaq hit another record in New York even as the lead from US traders was generally tepid, but eyes are now on the Quebec gathering of G7 leaders, with world trade high on the agenda after Donald Trump hit Canada, Mexico and the European Union with steel and aluminium tariffs. The move was condemned by Washington’s allies, with Mexico on Tuesday announcing measures on a range of US goods from pork to bourbon, just as it holds trilateral talks on a long-standing deal with Canada and the US. However, Bloomberg News reported that China had offered to ramp up purchases of various US goods during talks this week, while Washington would ease US buying restrictions on Chinese telecom-equipment giant ZTE. “The president is expected to meet with his advisers on whether to move forward with this proposal or not. It has the ring of truth around it given the Chinese said the other day that all bets are off the table if the US imposes the tariffs,” said Greg McKenna, chief market strategist at AxiTrader. “They’ve thus offered both the carrot and the stick.”

With TV ads, drugmaker Gilead brings HIV prevention drug out of the closet IN a major shift, pharmaceutical giant Gilead Sciences will begin airing television ads for PrEP, its HIV prevention medication. The company said the ads, which will start in June and run through August, are “designed to encourage candid conversations around sexual health and promote public awareness of HIV prevention.” PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, involves taking a daily pill to prevent HIV transmission. Major clinical trials have shown that PrEP — also known by its brand name, Truvada — is safe and effective at preventing HIV if taken daily. The pill is also recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for at-risk groups. Since the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Truvada for HIV prevention in 2012, Gilead has leaned on public health agencies to promote the drug. New York City has for years placed advertisements on subways and buses to promote PrEP, and the District of Columbia’s health department aired its own racy HIV PrEP television

ad earlier this year. On paper, Gilead has spent paltry sums to promote Truvada — just several hundred thousand dollars per year in direct advertising, according to MM&M, versus more than $100 million to promote Hepatitis C drug Harvoni in 2017 alone. Gilead said it has granted more than $28 million to approximately 120 organizations since 2012 to support their efforts to promote PrEP, an average of less than $5 million a year. Singaraja and Denpasar undergo deflation

DENPASAR — Throughout May 2018, Denpasar underwent deflation of -0.03 percent when compared to the previous month, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 129.45. The deflation in May 2018 was the first time in the past five years. Singaraja also experienced deflation of - 0.33 percent with CPI of 140.91. Head of Bali Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Adi Nugroho, said the same month of last year always underwent inflation. Similarly, during the period of January-April 2018, Denpasar also experienced high inflation. However, if the CPI of May 2018 compared to May 2017 (yoy), it indicated inflation of 3.08 percent. If the CPI is accumulated from January to May 2018, there is also inflation of 1.79 percent. Contributors of deflation included food prices accounting for 0.1764 percent and the price of housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel groups contributing to deflation by 0.0034 percent. “The deflation occurred due to some factors, where one of them is caused by the government efforts to control prices that have showed encouraging results,” he said. Out of 82 CPI cities, there were 17 cities experiencing deflation. The highest deflation was recorded in Pangkal Pinang (Bangka Belitung Islands) of 0.99 percent and the lowest was recorded in Pematang Siantar (North Sumatra) by 0.01 percent. Meanwhile, the highest inflation was recorded in Tual (Maluku) of 1.88 percent and the lowest in Purwokerto (Central Java) and Tangerang (Banten) respectively by 0.01 percent. If sorted from the highest deflation, Denpasar is ranked 15th out of 17 cities experiencing deflation. Similar to Denpasar, Singaraja also experienced inflation if calculated from January to May being equal to 0.90 percent. In yearover-year (yoy), Singaraja also experienced inflation of 2.61 percent. However, if the CPI in May is compared to April, it shows deflation of 0.33 percent. Deflation is indicated by a decrease in index of the housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel group by 0.74 percent and foodstuff by 0.68 percent. The commodities recorded to contribute to deflation in May 2018 in Singaraja include some commodities such as rice, sand, brick, tuna, cayenne pepper, red pepper, vegetable tomatoes, bottled water and cucumber. Out of 82 CPI cities, 17 cities experienced deflation and 65 other cities experienced inflation. The highest deflation was recorded in Pangkal Pinang (Bangka Belitung Islands) of 0.99 percent and the lowest was recorded in Pematang Siantar (North Sumatra) by 0.01 percent. DENPASAR — The regionally generated revenue (PAD) of Bali province is dominated by motor vehicle tax and motor vehicle title transfer tax. In 2018, the regionally generated revenue of motor vehicle tax was projected to reach IDR 1.254 trillion, while the motor vehicle title transfer tax was worth IDR 1.141 trillion. Based on the data at the Bali Revenue Services as of December 31, 2017, there were 2,988,356 units of active vehicles in Bali. Of this number, a total of 2,501,217 units are motorcycles. The number of motorcycles is found fewer when compared to that of 2013 where according to BPS it reaches 2,586,715 units, which further increased to 3,015,287 units of motorcycles until 2015. Bali provincial government is currently trying to boost the regionally generated revenue from other sectors. It is started by proposing two bills in the Bali House of Representatives some time ago. They are bills on Land Use Control of Local Government and the Result of Separated Regional Wealth Management and Other Legally Regionally Generated Revenue. The bill on Land Use Control of Local Government is closely related to the optimization of assets owned by the Bali provincial government. “We will discuss further these bills because there are many asset problems in Bali. Later, the zoning will be arranged based on the lease or profit sharing, which one belongs to business, tourism area or agricultural area,” said Chairman of Bill Special Committee on Land Use Control of Local Government,

Bali Semesta Mandiri (BSM) and PT. Mergantaka Mandala (RPH Temesi), as well as the return on equity participation in private owned companies such as BPD Bali, Asuransi Bangun Askrida, and Jasamarga Bali Tol. “The BPD in particular included in the category of private companies will still be consulted to the Ministry of Home Affairs,” he added. A member of the infamous Bali Nine drug smuggling gang has died of stomach cancer, an Indonesian justice ministry official said Tuesday. Tan Duc Thanh Nguyen, 34, was serving a life sentence for his role in trying to traffic heroin from the resort island of Bali back to Australia in 2005. The group became known as the Bali Nine and its ringleaders, Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan, were executed by firing squad in 2015. Nguyen -- who was rarely in the media spotlight -- was also sentenced to death before the Indonesian Supreme Court later reduced his term to life imprisonment. He succumbed to the terminal illness last month but his death in a Jakarta prison was only announced this week. “Tan Duc Thanh Nguyen died of stomach cancer in Jakarta on May 19,” justice ministry spokesman Ade Kusmanto told AFP. Nguyen and two other Australians were arrested shortly after other members of the trafficking gang were detained at the island’s international airport. None of the three had drugs on them at the time, but police found 350 grams of heroin in a suitcase in their hotel room. The execution of Sukumaran and Chan sparked a diplomatic row between Australia and Indonesia. The remaining six members of the gang are still in prison.(afp)

Jordan king calls for review of bill that sparked protests

Jordan’s King Abdullah II called for a review of a controversial draft tax law Tuesday as anti-austerity protesters staged another night of demonstrations in Amman and trade unions vowed to hold a general strike later Wednesday. For nearly a week, the capital and other cities have been hit by angry rallies against reforms backed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that have brought repeated price hikes. Prime Minister Hani Mulki stepped down on Monday in an effort to quell the unrest but his departure -- and King Abdullah’s call to review the law -- appear to have done little to reduce public anger. On Tuesday evening, protesters held another mass rally in Amman after breaking their Ramadan fast, jostling with police and waving Jordanian flags. Trade unions said the law review was a “positive” step but nonetheless called for a general strike on Wednesday. Many demonstrators said they wanted more than Mulki’s departure. “We want new people who really want to bring in reforms, we do not want politicians from the same circles who only want to solve the IMF’s problems by stealing money from the people’s pockets,” one male protester, who declined to give his name, told AFP. Another, who gave his first name as Khalil, said Jordan’s political system, which grants the monarchy vast executive powers, should become more democratic and ac-

countable. “We must elect the government, so that when errors are made they will be responsible to the people who elected them,” he said. In a letter charging new premier Omar al-Razzaz with forming a government, King Abdullah II said it “must carry out a comprehensive review of the tax system” to avoid “unjust taxes that do not achieve justice and balance between the incomes of the poor and the rich”. Late Monday, the king had warned Jordan was “at a crossroads”, blaming the economic woes on regional instability, the burden of hosting hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees and a lack of international support. Protesters on Monday night chanted “we want rights and duties, not tips and handouts!” and “down with the IMF!” as they gathered under a heavy police presence.
