‘Avengers’ + ‘Star Wars’ = big year for Disney

LOS ANGELES — Who would win if Captain America fought Luke Skywalker? Why Disney, of course, which stands to bring in astronomical amounts of money this year from two big installments of two of the most popular film franchises ever. With its Marvel movie “Avengers: Age of Ultron” just having notched the second-biggest domestic opening weekend of all time and a new “Star Wars” movie coming this winter, analysts expect the company to post not only great movie studio results but a big uptick in merchandise revenue and profits this year. Everything from Captain America mugs to doggy Darth Vader Halloween costumes will likely get a lift. “Avengers” has hauled in $664 million at theaters globally since its staggered release began two weeks ago, and buzz is already building for “Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens,” set for release Dec. 18. One indicator of the craze surrounding “Star Wars” is that a second teaser trailer for the film released two weeks ago has been viewed over 200 million times. “The excitement around this movie is unlike anything we have ever seen before,” CEO Bob Iger told analysts Tuesday. a massive release of new merchandise surrounding the movie on Sept. 4, what it’s calling “Force Friday.” Second-quarter results released Tuesday are a good start. Earnings in the March quarter came to $1.23 per share, beating the $1.11 expected by analysts. Studio results were better than projected, given a tough comparison to last year when the smash hit “Frozen” was released on home video. Parks attendance and guest spending were higher domestically even with higher ticket prices, and revenue and profits from goods like Hulk hands, Elsa dolls and

lightsabers rose. Media networks profits slipped despite higher revenue, due to the higher cost of sports programming, including the new college football playoffs rights which ESPN splurged on. Revenue rose 7 percent to $12.46 billion, also topping estimates for $12.28 billion. Analyst Robin Diedrich with Edward Jones said that Disney’s studio, its “lifeblood,” is very healthy, as the company is preparing to unleash more Marvel films, a Pixar sequel to “Toy Story” and the start of several “Star Wars” movies over the next several years. MUMBAI — One of India’s biggest and most popular movie stars, Salman Khan, has been found guilty of running over five men sleeping on a sidewalk, killing one in a hit-and-run case that has dragged through the courts for more than 12 years. A Mumbai court on Wednesday convicted Khan of culpable homicide, saying all charges against him had been proved, Press Trust of India said. Khan, who faces up to 10 years in prison, was expected to appeal. The court was expected to announce the sentence later Wednesday. The 49-year-old actor also faces charges of negligent driving and causing grievous harm to the victims. The prosecution told the court that Khan was drunk when he rammed his SUV into a group of homeless people, sleeping on a sidewalk in September 2002. Khan has all along denied that he was behind the wheel. In April, his driver told the court that he was driving the vehicle when the accident occurred. Ashok Singh said he lost control of the SUV when one its tires burst. But Judge D.W. Deshpande dismissed the actor’s claim and accused him of driving the car under the influence of alcohol, and fleeing after the accident. Khan is one of Bollywood’s most popular stars and has acted in more than 90 Hindi-language films in his 27-year career. Huge crowds had gathered outside Khan’s house in south Mumbai for a glimpse of the star as he emerged from his apartment block surrounded by security guards. Scores of television crews and reporters followed the actor’s car and thronged the building as the court gave its verdict in a case that has been closely watched by millions of Khan’s fans in India and abroad. May and June, peak of dengue fever season SEMARAPURA - Cases of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DBD) in Klungkung are predicted to increase this year compared to last year because of the heavy rainfall that supports the development of the mosquito larvae that grow up to spread dengue to humans. The peak of “dengue season” is estimated to occur in May and June this year. The Division Head of Health Problem Prevention, of the Klungkung Health Agency, Wayan Jaya Putra, revealed that the increase in the number of dengue cases this year is due to the five-year cycle of dengue. Wayan Jaya said that such conditions are not unique to Klungkung, but are in fact so throughout Indonesia. This five-year cycle is predicted to occur due to the increase in the intensity of rainfall every five years. According to the data of the Klungkung Health Agency, since the beginning of January at least 55 people in the area were infected with dengue with the most recent case having occured at Sengkiding hamlet, Aan village. According to Wayan Jaya, one resident of Aan village was rushed to hospital and three neighbours suffered from high fever. The Klungking health Agency subsequently fogged the area in question. So finally the victim reported the incident to the the Klungkung police on Monday afternoon. Many investors have no permit for their ground water wells

TABANAN - A judicial team from Tabanan County has been working very hard to make Tabanan more lawful. However, despite having intensified the policing of business permits, many unlawful investors continue to be found. Evidently, the results of inspections under “operation Sadhu Arta”, the Tabanan joint judicial team comprised of police officers, attorneys, the military and other related agencies, again found a number villas and boutique hotels operating without permits, on Tuesday (May 5). At Beraban and Tegal Mengkeb, East Selemadeg, six of the seven locations targeted for inspection were found to be lacking permits for underground water drilling(ABT), artesian well permits and one villa had an expired permit. Since the artesian wells are illegal, the villa management is directly handed a summons to the office of the Tabanan Municipal Police. The management will be questioned next Monday, and must apply for permits to drill wells that exploit the underground water. “Of the seven targeted points, the officers found a villa whose permit has expired, while another villa claims that they had a permit for accessing ground water but that it had expired and that the renewal was still being processed. We will summon them for the process of investigation next Monday. By all means, we still prioritize preventive and persuasive measures rather than post-factum reprimands,” said the Chief of Tabanan

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Europe faces massive obesity problem

PARIS - Nearly all Irish adults are likely to be overweight in 15 years’ time, said a study Wednesday that warned of a European “obesity crisis of enormous proportions”. On current trends, some 89 percent of Irish men will be overweight by 2030, and nearly half obese, said a World Health Organization study to be presented at a European Congress on Obesity in Prague. This was up from 74 percent overweight, and 26 percent obese in 2010 in one of Europe’s fattest nations. Of Irish women, 85 percent are likely to be overweight and 57 percent obese by 2030, said the study, also well up on the 2010 figures. The growing numbers of overweight and obese people are a

growing cause of disease and disability around the world. “Even in countries with a traditionally lower prevalence of obesity such as Sweden, obesity rates are predicted to rise sharply,” the congress report said. Over a quarter of Swedish men will be obese by 2030, and 22 percent of women. People with a BMI (body weight index, a ratio of weight to height) of 25 and higher are classified overweight, and 30 and over obese. In the UK, “one third (33 percent) of women are forecast to be

obese in 2030, compared with over one quarter (26 percent) in 2010,” the congress press statement said. Sixty-four percent of UK women and 74 percent of men will be overweight in 2030. “Overall, the data show no evidence of a plateau in adult obesity in most countries,” said the statement. Other countries with projected steep rises in obesity over this period include Greece, Spain, Austria and the Czech Republic, according to the study of 53 countries. An estimated 77 percent of

Greek men are predicted to be overweight by 2030 and 67 percent of women, and the proportion of obese men and women will more than double from 20 percent to about 40 percent. For Spain, obesity in women is set to rise from 16 percent in 2010 to 21 percent in 2030, and in men from 19 percent to 36 percent, said the statement issued by congress organisers. About 37 percent of women in the Czech Republic, hosting the gathering, will be obese by 2030 and 36 percent of men. The Dutch are the thinnest of the lot, according to the study. SAN FRANCISCO — Each time 81-year-old Bill Dworsky or his 80-year-old wife Dorothy opens the refrigerator, closes the bathroom door or lifts the lid on a pill container, tiny sensors in their San Francisco home make notes on a digital logbook. The couple’s 53-year-old son, Phil, checks it daily on his smartphone. If there’s no activity during a designated time, the younger Dworsky gets an automated email, so he can decide whether to call or stop by. “This is peace of mind, really,” he says of the system he installed last year. The Silicon Valley tech executive lives just across town, but the sensors help him keep an eye on his aging parents while also raising a teenage daughter and frequently traveling for work. While his parents don’t need a lot of assistance, they have stopped driving and his father uses a cane. “I want to be in the position where I will know when I need to step in,” he says. Advances in low-cost sensors and wireless networks are fueling a boom in the so-called “smart” home. And companies are looking beyond home security and temperature control to creating products for Baby Boomers trying to balance caring for aging parents and respecting their independence. It’s a new twist on the notion of personal alarms, such as the Life Alert system that gained popularity with “Help, I’ve fallen and can’t get up” advertisements. These systems often use simple, inexpensive components such as accelerometers that know when an object is moved. Others use small power sensors to track electricity use or contact circuits that tell when a door is open or closed. Companies like Lively, Evermind and BeClose charge $50 to $300

for a set of sensors and $30 to $70 a month for wireless monitoring. Each promises to safeguard clients’ personal information. A set of motion sensors from San Francisco-based Lively seemed right for the Dworskys, whose son calls them “fiercely independent.” Before hearing about Lively, Phil had raised the idea of a webcam in their home.

“They immediately didn’t want it. It was a privacy violation,” he said. But they agreed to sensors that collect “a more limited set of information.” Dorothy doesn’t think much about the system tracking her daily routine. “It’s un-intrusive. That’s what we like about it,” she said. “We want to be able to stay in our home, and this is one way

that makes it possible.” Electronic tracking does raise issues around dignity and privacy, says Dr. Christine Ritchie, a geriatrics professor at the University of California, San Francisco. She believes some concerns will diminish as more people get used to using fitness bands, “smart” thermostats and other gadgets that track their

Bali’s economy grew 6.20 percent in Q1

DENPASAR - The Balinese economy grew 6.20 percent in the first quarter of 2015, surpassing the national economic growth of 4.71 percent during the same period.

“However, the economic growth slowed down as compared to the same quarter last year when it reached 6.55 percent,” Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Office in Bali Province Panusunan Siregar stated. On the production side, the financial service sector registered the highest growth, contributing 10.93 percent to the economic growth while household consumption grew 8.42 percent. As such, the Balinese economy during the January-March quarter of 2015 contracted 1.53 percent as compared to the previous quarter. On the production side, the contraction was 13.66 percent contributed by the extraction business. The first-quarter economic growth was also fueled by government spending, which grew 13.40 percent; the agricultural sector, which expanded 4.04 percent; and the information and communication sector, which grew 3.80 percent. Siregar remarked that other services grew 2.01 percent while healthcare and social activities grew 0.83 percent. The other business fields that contributed more than 6 percent to the local economy included the transportation and warehousing sector, which grew 9.16 percent; construction service, which expanded 9.01 percent; wholesale and retail businesses as well as car and motorcycle repair, which grew 8.30 percent, and the manufacturing industry, which rose 6.54 percent. On the spending side, household consumption contributed 48.73 percent, followed by the export of goods and services 36.29 percent, and the formation of gross fixed capital of 31.25 percent. TABANAN - Tanah Lot, located in Beraban village, Tabanan, Bali province, attracted 247,377 domestic and foreign tourists in April 2015, or an increase of four percent as compared to the same period last year. “In April 2014, we received 237,045 tourists,” Operational Manager of Tanah Lot Tourism Area I Ketut Toya Adnyana said. Of the total number of tourists, 3,170 were domestic child tourists and 135,464 were adults. Meanwhile, the foreign tourists comprised 2,609 children and 95,802 adults. According to Adnyana, the increase in the number of tourists visiting Tanah Lot was the result of intensive promotion conducted by the tourism businesspersons. In March 2015, the total number of domestic tourists reached 121,823, while there were 98,640 foreign tourists. These numbers have increased as compared to 140,145 domestic tourists and 102,637 foreign tourists recorded in the previous month. High interest in transmigration, quota restricted

TABANAN - Public interest in Tabanan to join the transmigration program is quite high. It is evident from the queue reaching 180 families. SINGARAJA - Starting from the monitoring of national examination for junior high school (SMP) in Buleleng, Commission IV of the Buleleng House even encountered school facilities that are severely damaged. At the SMPN 2 Busungbiu, the roof of classroom is allowed to leak for years. The roof even almost collapses, so that the students occupying the classroom are forced to be moved to another classroom. We ask the House to jointly struggle, so that the damage can be addressed immediately,” he said. Other than damaged facilities or classrooms, the school also still experiences another serious obstacle. It is the difficulty to get clean water to support the activities at school. The clean water crisis is also forced to be handled by installing some rainwater tanks at a number of locations in the school

Gunman’s hashtag hinted at Texas plot

PHOENIX — About 20 minutes before the shooting at a Texas cartoon contest that featured images of the Prophet Muhammad, a final tweet posted on an account linked to one of the gunmen said: “May Allah accept us as mujahideen,” or holy warriors. Among the hashtags used by the account was “#texasattack.” Federal authorities were tracking the Twitter account linked to 31-year-old Elton Simpson of Phoenix before he and another gunman opened fire Sunday in the Dallas suburb of Garland, said Rep. Michael McCaul, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, who was briefed on the investigation by federal law enforcement officials. The Department of Homeland Security and the FBI on April 20 also had issued a joint intelligence bulletin to local law enforcement warning that the Garland event was a possible target for a terrorist attack, according to a DHS official who was not authorized to be quoted discussing the document. Social media accounts linked to “violent extremists” had been focusing on the contest, the bulletin said. According to mainstream Islamic tradition, any physical depiction of the Prophet Muhammad — even a respectful one — is considered blasphemous. And a federal law enforcement official said authorities had an open investigation into Simpson at the time of the shooting. The official was not authorized to discuss ongoing investigation by name and spoke on condition of anonymity. It’s unclear why Simpson and his roommate, Nadir Soofi, were not stopped. A security guard was wounded in the leg before the gunmen were killed at the scene.

The law enforcement official said investigators will be studying the contacts the men had prior to the shooting, both with associates in the U.S. and abroad, to determine any additional terror-related ties. McCaul said the Twitter account linked to Simpson included images of Anwar al-Awlaki, a U.S-born radical cleric killed in a CIA drone strike in Yemen. But the Texas congressman stopped short of saying law enforcement had missed a red flag. “Was he on the radar? Sure he was,” McCaul said from Turkey, where he was leading a congressional delegation. “The FBI has got a pretty good program to monitor public social media.” The Islamic State group claimed responsibility Tuesday for the shooting, but counterterrorism experts said IS has a history of asserting involvement in attacks in which it had no operational role. That suggests the two gunmen could have carried out their own lone wolf-style strike. The evidence does not indicate the attack was directed by the Islamic State group, “but rather inspired by them,” McCaul said. “This is the textbook case of what we’re most concerned about.” The postings on the Twitter account linked to Simpson contrast sharply with the impression the jovial man and his quiet, 34-yearold roommate gave to neighbors and the leader of the mosque, which they attended in Phoenix up until recently. The families of both men say they were shocked by what happened and never saw any signs that either of them was capable of such violence. EU raises eurozone forecast despite bleaker Greek outlook

BRUSSELS — The European Union has nudged up its forecast for economic growth across the 19-country eurozone despite a much gloomier outlook for Greece, which is struggling to get its hands on vital bailout cash it needs to pay off debts. In its spring forecast published Tuesday, the EU’s executive branch said it is predicting 1.5 percent growth for the eurozone in 2015, up 0.2 percentage points from the previous forecast in February. For 2016, the Commission has kept its forecast of 1.9 percent for the eurozone. It said the eurozone as a whole is benefiting from a number of factors, including lower oil prices, a steady global outlook, the weaker euro, the 1.1 trillion-euro monetary stimulus ($1.2 trillion) from the European Central Bank and less stringent budget policies. “The European economy is enjoying its brightest spring in several years, with the upturn supported by both external factors and policy measures that are beginning to bear fruit,” said Pierre Moscovici, European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs. “But more needs to be done to ensure this recovery is more than a seasonal phenomenon.” The recovery is being powered by Germany, Europe’s biggest economy, which is expected to post solid growth of 1.9 percent this year, followed by 2 percent next. Another standout is Spain, which is expected to grow by a healthy 2.8 percent in 2015 and 2.6 percent the following year. For some it was proof that a relaxation in the government belttightening measures that dominated EU policy for much of the financial crisis is starting to pay off. “The recovery has arrived because Europe has taken a break from the policies of austerity,” the European Trade Union Confederation said in a statement. “Growth has finally been given a fighting chance.” (ap)

US trade deficit jumps to 6-year high of $51.4 billion WASHINGTON — The U.S. trade deficit in March swelled to the highest level in more than six years, propelled by a flood of imports that may have sapped the U.S. economy of any growth in the first quarter. The deficit rose to $51.4 billion, the largest trade gap since October 2008 and more than 43 percent higher than in February, the Commerce Department reported Tuesday. Exports were up 0.9 percent to $187.8 billion, while imports increased 7.7 percent to $239.2 billion. The trade deficit is the short-fall between exports and imports. The result suggests that international trade played a biggerthan-expected role in the U.S. economy’s anemic growth in the January-March. It could even force the government to further revise down its gross

domestic product estimate for the quarter, possibly into negative territory. Paul Ashworth, chief U.S. economist at Capital Economics, said the massive trade deficit means the U.S. economy “undoubtedly contracted slightly in the first quarter.” He estimates GDP in the January-March period fell 0.3 percent instead of the 0.2 percent growth the government reported last week. However, he notes that the surge in imports stems largely from the resolution in February of a labor dispute at West Coast ports, which worked to clear their

backlogs in March. That means the road ahead should be brighter. Economists are looking for growth to rebound in the current April-June quarter to around 2 percent, climbing to a 3 percent average in the second half of the year. Rising employment is expected to fuel stronger consumer spending, which would help offset sluggish export growth. Exports have been hurt by an increase in the value of the dollar against other major currencies over the past year. A strong dollar makes U.S. products more expensive overseas while lowering the price of imported products in the U.S. The jump in imports in March reflected greater shipments of foreign-made industrial machinery, autos, mobile phones, cloth-

ing and furniture. For the first three months of this year, the trade deficit was 5.2 percent higher than the same period a year ago. A larger trade deficit acts as a drag on growth because it means more U.S. producers are losing sales to foreign competitors. The trade gap with China in March surged 38.7 percent to $31.2 billion. The U.S. trade deficit with China is the largest for any country and is on track to set another record this year. Imports of petroleum products declined 6.6 percent to $15.4 billion, the lowest level for imports since September 2004. U.S. exports of petroleum dropped 7 percent to $7.7 billion. Both declines reflected the big drop in oil prices over the last year. (ap)

The Italian border patrol police said Wednesday its Monte Cimone ship intercepted the 50-meter migrant boat about 200 miles off Sicily. Passengers reported having been at sea for 12 days, the last two adrift and without food or water and with the ship’s hold flooded. LAGOS, Nigeria — Nigerian troops rescued 25 more children and women from Boko Haram early Wednesday as the soldiers destroyed seven more of the extremists’ camps in a northeastern forest stronghold, the army spokesman said. Many militants were killed in “a fierce encounter” that cost the life of one soldier and wounded five, Col. Sani Usman said in a statement. The military has reported saving about 700 children and women in recent days as soldiers supported by air raids have advanced further into the last hideouts of Nigeria’s homegrown Islamic extremists. It is unclear if those rescued include the schoolgirls kidnapped a year ago from a boarding school in Chibok town. Dozens escaped but 219 remain missing. A 3-month-old multinational offensive has driven Boko Haram from towns where it had declared an Islamic caliphate. The militants have retreated into the vast Sambisa Forest, where they have planted land mines to impede

attacks. “Our troops are unrelenting in their determined efforts of vanquishing Boko Haram terrorists wherever they are,” Usman said. On Saturday, the first group of 275 rescued — about 60 women and the rest children — arrived under military escort to the safety of a refugee camp in the eastern city of Yola. They brought news that some women have died in the rescue missions: Boko Haram militants stoned about 10 women to death for refusing to flee with them, several were accidentally crushed by an armored personnel carrier, and three died when they triggered

a land mine. There were some tearful family reunions at the refugee camp this week, the BBC reported in a video showing a teen-age girl being hugged by a woman relative. Most do not know if their husbands and children still are alive or were killed in the attacks when Boko Haram captured them. They say the insurgents are running out of ammunition, fuel and food — as can be seen by the sad state of some critically malnourished children. BEIRUT — A Norwegian humanitarian group says a record 38 million people have been internally displaced in their countries worldwide, with 2.2 million Iraqis alone forced to flee from their homes in 2014 after the Islamic State group overrun their areas. The study by the Norwegian Refugee Council’s Internal Displacement Monitoring Center was released Wednesday. It says 11 million were newly displaced last year — mostly because of conflicts in Syria, Iraq, South Sudan, Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo, accounting for 60 percent of the new displacement. The group says at least 1.1 million Syrians also fled their homes last year. Syria has the highest number of internally displaced, with 7.6 million dislodged because of the conflict, now in its fifth year. That’s at least 35 percent of the population. (ap)

The 37-year-old man was stopped by police on Monday as he alighted from a passenger ship in Surabaya, a city on the man island of Java. Photographs show the birds, with distinctive yellow plumage, peering out of the bottles after being found by officers. The bottoms of the bottles had been cut off to squeeze the birds inside. The head of the criminal investigation unit at the Tanjung Perak port, Aldy Sulaiman, said police found the live birds stashed inside the man’s luggage. “We found 21 yellow-crested cockatoos and one green parrot,” he said. “All the birds were found inside water bottles, which were

packed in a crate.” The birds have since been sent to Indonesia’s natural resources conservation office, which deals with wildlife-trafficking cases. Sulaiman said the man -- whose identity was not disclosed in line with normal criminal procedure in Indonesia -- had admitted to carrying two birds for a friend but claimed to know nothing about the other animals. If found guilty of smuggling, the man, from near Surabaya, could face up to five years in prison. Yellow-crested cockatoos are native to Indonesia and neighbouring East Timor and considered critically endangered, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. A landslide triggered by a pipeline explosion on Tuesday engulfed eight homes and trapped villagers in a West Java village. NEW DELHI - Outside Bollywood films, Sania Mirza might be the only Indian success welcomed as warmly in neighbouring Pakistan and the 28-year-old expects her doubles feats to inspire girls on both sides of the border to pick up a tennis racquet. Mirza has long been the face of the women’s game in India and her high-profile cross-border wedding to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik five years ago placed her in a unique position. Her rise to the top ranking in WTA doubles was hailed in both countries, though they remain suspicious of each after fighting three wars since independence in 1947. BARCELONA - Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti will have to rethink his tactics ahead of the Champions League return leg after Sergio Ramos came unstuck in an experimental midfield role in the semi-final clash with Juventus. Acclaimed as one of the game’s best centre-halves, Ramos looked like a fish out of water in the middle of the pitch in their 2-1 first leg defeat on Tuesday both defensively in front of the backline and most noticeably in building play. “I am here to help the team wherever I can,” Ramos told reporters. “The other day it worked out for me (in midfield) but this was a bad game on a personal and a group level. I have confidence in the coach and I was ready to sacrifice myself for the team. “I have to run a lot more than in central defence but that is not a big worry for me. We have to be self-critical and learn from our mistakes.” Real have suffered an injury crisis in recent weeks that led Ancelotti to look at different options in midfield to cover for the absence of Luka Modric as he was not convinced by the obvious choices of Asier Illarramendi and Lucas Silva. Robinho called up for Brazil’s Copa America squad

SAO PAULO — Veteran striker Robinho was summoned by Brazil for the Copa America, while an injured Oscar was left out of the squad on Tuesday. Neymar and defenders David Luiz and Thiago Silva also were included in coach Dunga’s list for Brazil’s first official competition after the disappointing World Cup elimination at home last year. Brazil opens against Peru on June 14, then plays Colombia on June 17, and Venezuela on June 21 to close out the group stage of the 12-nation tournament in Chile. Robinho was in Dunga’s team that won the Copa America in 2007, and the coach said he brought back the 31-year-old player to take advantage of his experience. The striker has been playing well since returning to Brazilian football on a loan from AC Milan. “Robinho knows his role in the national team right now,” Dunga said. “He was called up because of his performances with Santos, but also because of the experience he can bring to the younger players.
