NEW YORK — Soprano Kristine Opolais has made Metropolitan Opera history, becoming the first singer in its 131 years to debut in two major company roles within 24 hours.

NEW YORK — Time doesn’t stop for comedy legends, or superstars of any sort. David Letterman, the pioneering late-night TV host who has announced that he will retire sometime in 2015, had to feel it. Letterman, known for his Top 10 lists, his ironic detachment and his set at the classic Ed Sullivan Theater, suddenly seemed old. That’s been an unanticipated effect of Jimmy Fallon’s fast start replacing Jay Leno on the long-running “Tonight” show the past two months. CBS now faces the challenge of moving on in a reordered late-night world at a time the two Jimmys — NBC’s Fallon, 39, and ABC’s Kimmel, 46, — have a significant head start. When Jay Leno, 63, left in February, Letterman, 66, lost his foil — the man whose victory in the competition to replace legendary host Johnny Carson two decades ago he never let go. Leno was a generational compadre, and when he left, Letterman was alone. Fallon and Kimmel have a different style, more good-natured and less mocking of the entire concept of a talk show.

It’s hard to know what role the new competition played in Letterman’s decision. His last contract extension, signed before Fallon took over, was for one year. In the past, he’s done multi-year extensions. The first time Leno left late-night, Letterman ascended to the throne.

Not this time. Since Fallon began at “Tonight,” his show has averaged 5.2 million viewers, while Letterman has averaged 2.7 million and Kimmel 2.65 million, the Nielsen company said. Last year Letterman averaged 2.9 million and Kimmel 2.5 million, so the direction was clear.

PERTH - Planes and ships were being diverted Sunday to the area where a Chinese vessel detected signals consistent with a black box beacon in the hunt for missing flight MH370, the search chief said. Australia is coordinating the southern Indian Ocean search for the Malaysia Airlines plane which went missing on March 8 with 239 people on board. “Today Royal Australian Air Force assets will deploy to assist in further examining the acoustic signals in the vicinity of where the Chinese ship has detected the sounds,” said Angus Houston, head

of the Joint Agency Coordination Centre leading the search. “HMS Echo and Australian Defence Vessel Ocean Shield are also being directed to join Haixun 01 as expeditiously as possible to assist with either discounting or confirming the detections.” Houston said the Australian vessel Ocean Shield would be delayed

while it investigated a separate acoustic signal in its current search location that had only been detected in the last hour. “We do not have any detail on the encounter at this stage,” he said. “We just know that there has been an acoustic detection by Ocean Shield which has highly sophisticated equipment and the word I have got is that it is something that needs to be investigated. “I’m not prepared to speculate on what it might be and what it might not be.” The Haixun 01 signal, which lasted for 90 seconds, was picked

up during searches on Saturday. The Chinese ship had already detected a more fleeting signal on Friday, Houston said. He described the development an “important and encouraging lead but one which I urge you to continue to treat carefully”. “We are working in a very big ocean and within a very large search area, and so far since the aircraft went missing we have had very few leads which allow us to narrow the search area,” he said. Houston said the mission was treating both acoustic signals “very seriously” but he said the Haixun 01 detection was the most promis-

ing lead. The retired Australian defence chief also said that corrected satellite data had shifted the focus for the hunt for the missing plane to the southern area of the search, the area that Haixun 01 is operating in. “The whole of the existing search area remains the most likely area that the aircraft entered the water, but based on the new advice the southern area now has a higher priority,” he said. Houston urged caution, saying he did not want to put the families of those onboard the missing flight under further stress.

SINGARAJA - Who is not familiar with strawberries? This bright red fruit with a sweet sour taste has been known in any region. Even, the demand is never quiet. This condition makes farmers more excited to grow this plant. Since the past strawberries have been widely grown by farmer groups at Pancasari village, Sukasada subdistrict. However, since this fruit is demanded by the market, many collectors and retailers from Candikuning village (Tabanan) purchased the strawberries of Buleleng. Even, since the large amount of this fruit dropped to Tabanan every day, as if the fruit was produced at Candikuning village. Interestingly, this situation was allowed to drag and fruit growers kept silent although their production was then recognized by other areas. Even, the only icon of Pancasari village as a village producing strawberry had been proved by the establishment of strawberry monument. The monument was built in front of the Pancasari Market on Jalan Singaraja-Bedugul. Unfortunately, the mascot was neglected and brand of the village as a central producer of strawberries was getting buried. Meanwhile, other village was even more eager to claim itself as fruit producer in the region. The Head of Buleleng Agri-

culture and Livestock Agency, Nyoman Swatantra, said in his office on Friday (Apr 4) that all this time the strawberry of Buleleng was recognized by others as a central producer. Swatantra said that such condition had been going on since long time and farmers did not feel disturbed by the situation. They considered when their products had already sold was sufficient. When the fruit was claimed by another local farmer was not a serious problem. “Indeed, our strawberries are entirely sold to the area of Candikuning, Tabanan, and it has lasted for long time, where our fellow farmers did not question because they’ve sold their products and bring in results,” he said. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

On Saturday, images of supersized shapes “fell” on two sides of the mirrored tower as competitors used joysticks to maneuver them into place. Tetris, created by Russian computer programmer Alexey Pajitnov in 1984, challenges players to rotate and arrange falling shapes into complete rows. Saturday’s event kicked off a citywide series of events called Philly Tech Week. It also celebrated the upcoming 30th anniversary of Tetris, a game revered as the epitome of elegance and simplicity, said Frank Lee, a digital media professor at Drexel University. Lee already holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest architectural video game display for playing Pong on one side of the Cira Centre last year. Pong is an electronic version of paddleball developed by Atari in 1972. Tetris became a global phenomenon in the late 1980s after game designer Henk Rogers, who had seen it at a trade show in Las Vegas, acquired the rights and struck a deal to put it on Nintendo’s original Game Boy. Rogers said he can’t believe the longevity of Tetris, which decades later continues to mesmerize players on more than 30 platforms. “If a game lasts a year, that’s amazing,” said Rogers, now managing director of The Tetris Co. “They usually go out of style very quickly.” Rogers said several new Tetris products and initiatives are planned for release around its June 6 anniversary. He declined to discuss details.

So who will voice the cat we love to caption? Grumpy’s not saying, nor are her humans, the brother-sister team of Tabatha and Bryan Bundesen. DENPASAR - Bali’s exports fell 12.24 percent to US$40.30 million in February 2014 from US$45.92 million the previous month, according to the office of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) in the province. The exports in February 2014 also declined 6.73 percent from US$43.21 million in the same month last year, chief of the BPS office Panusunan Siregar said here on Thursday. The February 2014 exports consisted of non-knitted garments at 15.79 percent, fishery products and shrimps at 15.44 percent, wood and wood products at 11.98 percent and jewelry at 8.68 percent, he said. The United States was the biggest market for Bali’s exports in February 2014, buying 21.18 percent of the overall exports in that month. It was followed by Japan with 9.04 percent, Singapore with 8 percent, Australia with 5.49 percent and France with 5.09 percent. Among the five main export destinations, only France recorded a 72.78 percent increase in its imports from Bali in February 2014 compared to the same month last year, he said. Meanwhile, exports to the United States fell 35.07 percent, Japan’s 64 percent, Singapore’s 32.95 percent and Australia’s 21.17 percent. Compared to January 2014, exports to the United States and France rose 4.77 percent and 72.77 percent, respectively, in February 2014.

Found, rabies positive dog in Tabanan Bali Post

TABANAN - After positive cases of rabies in dogs were found in Tejakula and Seririt, Singaraja, another positive case of rabies in dogs was also found at Sekartaji hamlet, Sesandan village, Tabanan. The finding was confirmed by the Head of Tabanan Livestock, Ni Ketut Warsiki, when contacted on Saturday (Apr 5). She said the case was known after the dog biting a resident and the sample of its brain had been taken. “The results of the lab test confirmed if the dog was positive to rabies. Even, during the incident the team has also conducted surveillance and early warning in the surrounding area,” she explained. She added the other dogs that had contact with the rabies positive dog had been eliminated. “Last Saturday and today the team has been doing fast steps, even some dogs have been vaccinated,” she said. With the discovery of more positive cases of rabies in dogs, she again called for public vigilance to be increased. Some emerging economies, such as Indonesia, suffered sharp capital outflows and losses to their currencies after the Fed began to reduce its massive stimulus programme, as the world’s largest economy emerges from a crippling financial crisis. Indonesian Finance Minister Chatib Basri said that, as well as the tapering, the region must be ready for the possibility of the Fed raising its policy interest rate in the future.

“This may have an impact on the capital outflows from emerging markets, including ASEAN, back to the US,” he told reporters. But he added that ASEAN has made preparations for the shift in US policy, stressing the importance of tackling fiscal and current account deficits as well as maintaining sound financial institutions. Chairman of the committee, Wayan Kodja, said the mass ceremony aimed to improve the spiritual glory of the pilgrims. According to him, pursuant to the sloka of Manava Dharmasastra it was mentioned Samkarat Dvija Uchiate. Through the ceremony, someone would get dvija or glory. The participants amounted to 363 people, aside from Klungkung; the other participants also came from outside Klungkung even beyond Bali, Lombok and Java. After all the processions were held, each participant performed prayers in the Jagatnatha Temple, Klungkung. Megawati stated that before naming Jokowi as PDIP’s presidential candidate, she had consulted him and had discussed his vision, mission and programs. Jokowi, she said, had vision, mission and programs to develop the nation and the states.

“Jokowi had plans for programs to empower the people, so that they could be self-reliant and prosperous based on Indonesia’s available resources and potential,” she noted. Megawati, who was Indonesia’s fifth president, said if the people trusted the PDIP to govern the country, it will work hard to realize the country’s dream of becoming self-reliant in food and energy. “The conditions of the Indonesian people should become better in the future than they were currently,” she stressed. A total of 12 political parties in the national level have been conducting campaigns since March 16 for the upcoming legislative elections on April 9, 2014. The former president said this must serve as a lesson and in view of that she called on the people to help monitor the counting of votes from the local polling stations to the General Elections Commission (KPU)’s to prevent possible rigging. She also called on the people to ensure PDIP’s victory in Bali in the upcoming legislative elections. “At the minimum, the PDIP must win like it did in 2009, namely 68 percent of the votes,” she said.

TOKYO — U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel delivered a two-pronged warning to Asia Pacific nations Sunday, announcing that the U.S. will send two additional ballistic missile destroyers to Japan to counter the North Korean threat, and saying China must better respect its neighbors. In recent weeks the North has conducted a series of rocket and ballistic missile launches that are considered acts of protest against annual ongoing springtime military exercises by Seoul and Washington. North Korea says the exercises are rehearsals for invasion. North and South Korea also fired hundreds of artillery shells into each other’s waters in late March in the most recent flare-up. Standing alongside Onodera at the defense ministry, Hagel said they discussed the threat posed by Pyongyang. He said the two ships are in response to North Korea’s “pattern of provocative and destabilizing actions” that violate U.N. resolutions and also will provide more protection to the U.S. from those threats.

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica — Luis Solis’ main challenger in Sunday’s presidential election is voter abstention. The center-leftist’s only flesh-and-blood rival in the runoff dropped out of the race last month, leaving Solis one remaining challenge: getting enough Costa Ricans to the polls to give him a respectable vote total. Solis topped the first round of the presidential vote in February with only about 30 percent of the vote and a margin of less than 1 percentage point over Johnny Araya of the governing National Liberation Party. But just over a month later, polls showed Solis had built a lead of two or three to one, and Araya stopped campaigning, saying it would be a waste of money. Solis, who turns 56 later this month, has vowed a more activist government that focuses on building up small and medium-sized local businesses while strengthening social and environmental programs in a country long considered the most stable in Central America. While his Citizen Action Party opposed the Central American Free Trade Agreement, Solis said he won’t try to pull out of the deal, but will manage it better. Solis will have to negotiate to get his policies through Congress. His party holds just 13 of the 57 seats in the National Assembly. And analysts say Sunday’s vote total could affect his influence as well. “If he gets less votes that what he got in the first round, he won’t have political legitimacy even if legally he is president,” said Francisco Barahona, a political science professor at the University of Costa Rica The son of a shoemaker turned small businessman, Solis studied history at the University of Costa Rica and obtained a master’s degree in Latin American studies at Tulane University in the United States. He also has taught at Florida International University and at the University of Michigan. Back home, he taught at local universities and worked in the country’s Foreign Ministry at the time when President Oscar Arias was helping mediate an end to Central America’s civil wars. He later served as an ambassador and as secretary general of the National Liberation Party. Solis quit the party in 2005, complaining of corruption, and went back into teaching. He joined Citizen Action only in 2009.

Fifteen people were killed, most hacked to death with machetes, and 75 homes burnt to the ground after accusations emerged that the winner of an election in Southwest Sumba had bribed the Constitutional Court to declare him the district chief. A string of surveys ahead of nationwide legislative polls on Wednesday show that honesty and freedom from corruption are the top qualities sought in political candidates by Indonesians weary of the country’s endemic graft. But, paradoxically, the polls also reveal that millions of Indonesians see vote-buying as acceptable. “There is this disconnect. People don’t see this practice as corruption. They don’t see that by accepting the money they’re contributing to corruption,” the Asia Foundation’s Indonesia country representative, Sandra Hamid, told AFP. A recent Asia Foundation survey found that more than 40 percent of Indonesian voters would accept cash or a gift from legislative candidates, while other surveys put the figure above 50 percent. “They see the enormous amounts of money involved in high-level corruption cases, so if they see 50,000 rupiah (around $4) in front of them, they think ‘OK, I’ll just grab it’,” Hamid said. At a recent rally in the capital Jakarta, thousands of supporters of the Golkar party -the country’s second-biggest -- wearing bright yellow T-shirts emblazoned with portraits of candidates were bussed in from all over the city. They devoured free lunches, ranging from rice and chicken to McDonald’s, and mimicked the pelvic thrusts of singers on stage performing “dangdut”, an Indonesian fusion of Arabic, Malay, Indian and Western pop notorious for its lewd lyrics. Most admitted they were promised 50,000 rupiah on the bus ride back home, but said they saw nothing wrong with it. “It’s not vote-buying. It’s just for fuel and drinks,” insisted 56-year-old Djami’at Ibrahim, even though transport and drinks were provided. The handouts may seem tiny, but they mean a great deal to many in Indonesia, where half the population of 250 million people live below or hover around the poverty line of $2 a day.

Many who attend rallies are young or from poorer sectors of society, and some are transported in from slums with no clean water or electricity. However, giving out money does not guarantee a candidate support at the legislative elections, which will set the stage for presidential polls in July. More than 55 percent of those quizzed in a survey by pollster Indikator in December said they would accept cash from a candidate, but not necessarily vote for them. Many take the money and don’t vote at all, disillusioned with a parliament that consistently ranks as one of the country’s most graft-ridden institutions in corruption perception surveys. A slew of lawmakers have been jailed for rigging tenders and misusing state funds in recent years, and chronic absenteeism and photographs of MPs asleep in session feature prominently in the media. Father Michael Keraf is waging a campaign to counter what he calls the “evil act” of vote-buying on Sumba, a predominantly Christian, deeply poor island in the centre of the Muslim-majority Indonesian archipelago. “We try to teach the people, don’t just look at money. To give a very simple illustration -- a chicken at the market is $5 to $10 these days. If you accept a chicken from a candidate, you’re saying your integrity is worth nothing more than a chicken,” said the pastor. While small offerings are made to everyday Indonesians, those with influence over communities are worth a little more. Leaders of a religious minority and their partners were recently invited to the home of a legislative candidate near Jakarta. The wife of one leader, who wished to remain anonymous, said they were given clothing and envelopes stuffed with cash, and the candidate promised to push through a law to help the minority. “I would say he was trying to buy our votes and my husband’s influence. I think it’s wrong,” she said. However, she admitted that she accepted the money and would likely vote for the candidate. “But I was going to vote for him anyway. It’s nothing to do with the money.”

JAKARTA - Indonesia has agreed to pay $1.9 million to stop the impending execution of an Indonesian maid on death row in Saudi Arabia for murder, a minister said Thursday. Satinah Binti Jumadi Ahmad was sentenced to death in 2011 for murdering her employer’s wife and stealing money. She was due to be beheaded in the coming days. Her case has attracted huge media attention in Indonesia and there was a campaign in recent weeks to stop the execution from going ahead. Under Islamic sharia law followed in Saudi Arabia, the family of a victim can settle for “blood money” instead of an execution. The family demanded seven million riyal ($1.9 million) but contributions from businesses and a group representing companies that send migrant workers abroad only managed to raise four million. Indonesian Security Minister Djoko Suyanto said Thursday that the government had agreed to provide the remaining three million. “We have agreed to fulfil the family’s demands,” he told reporters in the capital Jakarta. “This will help to save Satinah from the death

penalty.” The family had initially asked for 15 million riyals but agreed to lower it, he added. The Indonesian government has fought a long battle to save the maid and had already managed to get the execution delayed five times since her conviction. Saudi Arabia is the biggest destination for Indonesian maids, with around one million in the ultra-conservative kingdom. If Ahmad was beheaded, it could have set back attempts by Indonesia and Saudi Arabia to mend ties damaged by the 2011 beheading of an Indonesian maid, who was also guilty of murder. That execution infuriated Indonesia, particularly as Saudi officials failed to inform Jakarta beforehand, and authorities placed a moratorium on sending new maids to Saudi Arabia, which remains in place. The countries took a step towards overcoming their differences with the signing of an agreement in February to give maids in the ultra-conservative kingdom better protection. Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under Saudi Arabia’s strict version of sharia law.

Five dead as landslide derails train Agence France-Presse

JAKARTA - A landslide triggered by heavy rain derailed a train as it travelled through Indonesia’s main island of Java on Friday, leaving five people dead, an official said. There were about 250 passengers on the train as it travelled from the city of Bandung in the west of Java to Malang in the east. The land slipped away from under the tracks as the train was passing through the city of Tasikmalaya at 6:30 pm (1130 GMT), said national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

Three of the train’s eight carriages derailed and five people were killed, he said. “Three bodies have been evacuated and the two other bodies remain trapped. We are in the process of evacuating them,” he said. The other people on board the train were transferred to other forms of transport, said Nugroho. He did not have information on whether anyone else was injured. Train accidents are common on Indonesia’s ageing and poorly maintained railroad network. Landslides and floods occur frequently during the archipelago’s six-month rainy season.

Associated Press Writer PARIS — Three-time Olympic champion Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia won the Paris marathon on Sunday on his debut at the distance. Bekele completed the 42.2kilometer race in 2 hours, 5 minutes, 3 seconds to break the race record set by Stanley Biwott of Kenya in 2012. Limenih Getachew of Ethiopia finished second, 1:45 behind. Flomena Cheyech of Kenya dominated the women’s race in 2:22:41. Bekele won the gold medal in the 5,000 meters and 10,000 at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He has struggled with injuries over the past few years and hasn’t won a major title since the 2009 world championships in Berlin.

LONDON — The Czech Republic became the first team to reach the Davis Cup semifinals Saturday, while heavily favored Switzerland had another disappointing loss in the doubles and France kept alive its quarterfinal against Germany. The defending champion Czechs clinched an unassailable 3-0 lead over Japan after Radek Stepanek and Lukas Rosol comfortably beat Tatsuma Ito and Yasutaka Uchiyama 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in the doubles. PARIS — Paris Saint-Germain coach Laurent Blanc rested key players and still saw his team take a step closer to a second straight French title after coasting to a 3-0 win against Reims on Saturday. With Tuesday’s Champions League quarterfinal second leg against Chelsea in mind, Blanc made eight changes to his lineup from the team that beat Chelsea 3-1 on Wednesday night, with Yohan Cabaye and Adrien Rabiot coming into midfield, and Jeremy Menez given a rare appearance on the right wing. Edinson Cavani, meanwhile, made the most of a rare start in his favored center forward position, scoring his 15th league goal of the season as PSG moved provisionally 16 points clear of second-placed Monaco, which hosts Nantes on Sunday. “Like all the matches that come before a Champions League match, this one wasn’t easy to prepare before going to Chelsea,” Blanc said. “We will be champions, but we’re not there yet, so we can’t say when it will be.” Cavani has been unhappy playing in a position wide on the right this season, but with Zlatan Ibrahimovic facing several weeks out after tearing the back of his right thigh against Chelsea, he will now get several games as striker. “It’s always important for a striker to get goals,” Blanc said. “I’d be happier if he’d scored another one, but he’s getting back to his best, little by little. I’m not worried about him, he’s always scored goals.” In the 43rd minute, Cavani timed his run well to meet right back Gregory Van der Wiel’s cross and poke the ball past goalkeeper Kossi Agassa for his 22nd goal of the season in all competitions. The Uruguay forward had not scored in his previous five games. “All we did was defend, and that’s not enough,” Reims defender Anthony Weber said. “PSG are much better than us and there’s nothing you can say about it.” PSG’s other two goals were own goals from Aissa Mandi in the second half.
