RABIES infected dogs are still being found in Tabanan, which means that the disease could potentially spread throughout the region. One dog, showing signs of rabies infection, was found in Timpag villag, Kearmabitan, and in fact when the dogs brain was sampled, it was confirmed that rabies was present in the dog’s system. Fortunately no humans had been bitten. Unfortunately, three people were bitten by a rabies infected dog in Penarukan village, Kerambitan on December 7th: 2 year old Ni Putu Ani Lestari, was bitten on her left hand, as was 1 year old Ni Kadek Ayu, and 60 year old Ni Ketut Selesi, was bitten on her left leg. Division Head of the Communicable Disease Control and Environmental Health (P2MPL) at the Tabanan Health Agency, Wayan Triana Suryanata, confirmed that they had been bitten by a dog with rabies and also confirmed that the victims received anti-rabies vaccines (VARs). The rabies infected dog belonged to a local resident who let their dog roam around freely. Indonesia turns to China as ethnic Uighurs join would-be jihadis

JAKARTA - Indonesian authorities are working with their counterparts in China to stem a flow of ethnic Uighur militants seeking to join Islamist jihadists in the world’s most populous Muslim country, Indonesia’s counter-terrorism chief said. Furthermore, dog owners in the village will be signing a statement related to perarem (customary rules) related to rabies prevention in the village. Headman of Timpag, I Gusti W Sukewahana said that once the the perarem statement is drafted, it will be presented to residents. The idea is to have dog owners agree to care for their dogs properly by not letting them roam around freely, keeping them on leashes or in cages when necessary and having them vaccinated regularly. “If a rabies infected dog bites someone who subsequently dies, then the owner of the dog must bear all related expenses including burial costs,” said Sukewahana. Before eliminating the dogs in Timpag, Sukewahana gathered the local hamlet chiefs and customary village chiefs together to announce that they would be performing the dog eliminations. These local leaders then let other residents know about the plan. “So, if people did not want their dogs to be eliminated, they had to tie them up or put them in a cage. Also dog owners will be asked to sign a statement stating that they will not allow they dogs to roam around freely again,” he explained. Before implementing the eliminations of the dogs in Timpag village, local authorities gave a ritual notification (atur pining) at the trinity temples on the new moon, so that the activity would run smoothly. Also a special place was set aside to bury the dogs, on land owned by the village and ceremonies held for the burial of the dogs. Budget

The budget for handling mass eliminations of dogs in Tabanan was disbursed and the dog elimination schedule determined for each subdistrict. From the budget worth IDR 100 million, every livestock technical unit (UPTD) in each subdistrict targeted the elimination of 100 dogs. Head of the Tabanan Livestock Agency, Wayan Kotio, explained that the elimination fund of IDR 100 million is divided up between the subdistricts. “Each subdistrict received IDR 10 million worth of bullets, vaccines and other equipment needed to perform the eliminations,” said Kotio. Tabanan targeted the elimination of 1,000 dogs. “The target has been reached and the UPTDs are currently writing up their accountability reports,” said Kotio. The province is also conducting dog eliminations in areas that have reported cases of rabies but that are not covered under the district elimination program. (san)

THE THREAT of rabies that has emerged in the least few years, has yet to be completely overcome in Denpasar, although there have been no reports of humans becoming infected with rabies since 2012. This was confirmed by the Head of the Denpasar Health Agency, Luh Putu Sri Armini who added that people must nonetheless remain vigilant about the threat of rabies. Armini said that in order for Denpasar to remain free of rabies, health officers cannot be the only ones taking care of the matter. The public plays an important role in improving public health and maintaining rabies-free conditions. “We are still encouraging people to remain vigilant about the potential emergence of rabies cases in carrier animals,” she said.

When asked about the number of rabies cases in Denpasar city. Armini said that the first reported case was in 2008, but that she does not remember the exact figures. “I do not remember the number of cases since then, but data is available at the Denpasar Health Agency office. Obviously there have not been very many cases,” she said. In order to maintain Denpasar

as a rabies-free zone, Armini explained that the Health Agency continues to work with the Livestock, Fisheries and Maritime Affairs of Denpasar by doing things like disseminating information about health and the massive impact that rabies can have on humans. Since 2008 thousands of dogs and other carrier animals have been vaccinated. Between late 2008 and March 2011, an estimated population of 57,160 dogs were recorded as living in Denpasar, 88,525 vaccines were given, 9,331 dogs were eliminated with 27,829 pets remaining. (ara)

Balinese Temple Ceremony

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

One of the studies in the journal PLOS Biology analyzed a random sample of 441 biomedical journal articles published in the last 15 years, and found that only one included a full protocol of the information necessary for evaluating and replicating the research. Scientific studies are considered valid only if they can be reproduced by outside teams of researchers who come to the same conclusions using independent methods.

Furthermore, most of the studies did not say where their funding came from, and did not establish whether there were any conflicts of interest. “We hope our survey will further sensitize scientists, funders, journals and other science-related stakeholders about the need to improve these indicators,” wrote the study authors, who included prominent scientist John Ioannidis from the Meta-Research Innovation Center at Stanford University

and Shareen Iqbal from Emory University. A separate study by researchers in Germany examined hundreds of published experiments on stroke and cancer research and found that most did not contain sufficient information about how many animals were used. In many papers, the number of animals used over the course of the “vanished,” making any conclusions far less reliable. “The study began with an attempt to look at the robustness of findings in a handful of preclinical papers” said first author Constance Holman, a researcher at Charite Universitatsmedizin.

“But the sheer number of missing animals stopped us in our tracks.” When human subjects are part of a clinical trial, information about how many took part is considered crucial to the findings, and would not be left out of the published study, the authors said. An accompanying editorial in PLOS Biology noted that a “credibility crisis” is ravaging scientific research. For instance, a recent attempt to replicate 100 psychology studies found that only 39 percent could in fact be reproduced. Other previous research has found that “85 percent of research

investment in the biomedical sciences -– or US $200 billion of the worldwide investment in 2010 -– is wasted,” it said. The journal is launching a new Meta-Research Section aimed at improving standards. “With our new section on datadriven meta-research, we aim to highlight that research about research is an important area of science,” wrote editor Stavroula Kousta. “By creating a prominent forum in this field, PLOS Biology will contribute to ongoing efforts to improve research standards in the biological sciences and beyond.” (afp)

Dr. Scott Sullivan, a member of the ethics committee at the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, said the new study doesn’t prove any miscarriage risk from fluconazole, “it just means we need more data, more studies.” Sullivan, an associate professor at the Medical University of South Carolina, said most oral medicines are used cautiously in women during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy because of concerns about potential risks. CHICAGO — A prescription drug for yeast infections may increase chances for miscarriages when used early in pregnancy, a large study in Denmark suggests. The 17-year study involved oral versions of fluconazole, available in pills or liquid. It doesn’t provide any proof of harm, although the drug has been linked with other problems when used in high doses in pregnancy. The researchers looked at more than 1 million pregnancies in Denmark, comparing outcomes among

women who used oral fluconazole and those who didn’t. Women who used the drug during the first six months of pregnancy were almost 50 percent more likely than nonusers to have a miscarriage. Women at increased risk included those on a low 150-milligram dose; those on higher doses faced greater miscarriage risks. While fewer than 10 percent of women in each group had miscarriages — they totaled 710 — the researchers said doctors should use caution in prescribing the drug early

DENPASAR - Stipulation of the nine Balinese traditional dances as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO adds to the title of Bali in the eyes of the world community. Earlier, in June of 2012, Bali has obtained the Balinese cultural landscape stipulated by United Nations body as a world cultural heritage with the label of ‘The Cultural Landscape of Bali Province: the Subak System as a Manifestation of the Tri Hita Karana Philosophy.’ On that account, Bali has achieved two titles from the UNESCO.

Calonarang at Campuhan Windhu Segara Temple

Three rangdas played by women

COINCIDING with Shivaratri celebrations, Friday (Jan. 8) is the peak of the piodalan or temple anniversary of Campuhan Windhu Segara Temple at Padanggalak, Kesiman. The Piodalan celebrations will begin with the installation of ritual paraphernalia followed by melasti on Thursday (Jan. 7). On Friday night the Calonarang ballet will be staged and the peak of the piodalan will be carried out around 10:00 am on Saturday (Jan.8) and worshiping will go on until January 10th. The head of Campuhan Temple, I Wayan Mudhita, accompanied by the secretary, I Made Sueca, explained that this temple is the biggest campuhan (confluence) in Bali and is thronged by pilgrims every day. A number of volunteers have been doing devotional service by preparing some ritual oblations for the piodalan and many people have donated other things needed for the ritual. Currently the temple that is better known for the palukatan sudamala (purificatory rite) that take place there, also has a beji temple, a shrine for Lord Varuna, a Shiva-Buddha chamber, Pusering Jagat, Lord Brahma, Queen, two tajuk, Ratu Gede Mas Mecaling, padmasana and prajapati temples. There are now three new psalmodic (pawedan) pavilions and a gamelan that were recently completed. There is also a Saraswati pavilion for religious education and an ashram

for people from outside Denpasar. Wayan Mudhita explained that all the shrines were built thanks to donations from Balinese and nonBalnese people. The Calonarang ballet to be staged on Friday will be entitled Sumambang. The performance of the ballet is supported by volunteers and the Tri Pusaka Sakti dance studio from Batuan, Sukawati, Gianyar. Interestingly, for the occasion, the sanctified effigies at the temple in the form of two rangdas or ratu ayu, barong bangkal (boar) and barong macan (tiger) will be taken out and staged. Ida Ratu Ayu Manik Segara, Ratu Ayu Lingsir, Ratu Ayu Durga, Barong Macan and Barong Bangkal venerated at the Campuhan Temple will be presented with animal sacrifice (caru) at the end of the story. The three rangdas will be played by female artists namely Jero Alit, Jero Widya and Luh Putu Campuhan. “This is the difference from the other Calonarang. We involve women because Watunateng Dirah is a woman’s role,” explained Mahaguru Aiteri Naranaya and Mangku Istri, Shri Saci Sanjiwani. It is Jero Mangku Campuhan who had the idea for the title and roles of this Calonarang ballet. He explained that this Calonarang ballet will involve 100 artists with a watangan math (role of corpse), and the whole thing will be set to music played by the Tri Pusaka Sakti gamelan troup. (sue)

Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Darma Putra, a lecturer at the tourism studies of the Udayana University, said that from long time ago the Balinese dances have become the icon of cultural tourism. The UNESCO stipulated the Balinese dances as world cultural heritage in the meeting in Windhoek, Namibia, Africa (Dec. 2, 2015). In the meeting was set a number of world intangible cultural heritages, including the Balinese dance. A total of nine Balinese traditional dances were designated as intangible cultural heritage by the UNESCO. The nine dances are the Sanghyang Dedari, Rejang Dewa, Ritual Baris, Sidakarya Mask, Gambuh, Wayang Wong, Legong Keraton, Barong Ket and Joged Bumbung. The nine dances included in the world cultural heritage belong to three categories considering that Balinese dances or performing arts are divided into three, namely the wali (for sacred/ceremonial purposes), bebali (for semi-sacred purposes) and balih-balihan (for entertainment purposes). These categories were set out in a seminar in 1971 in anticipation of the effects of mass tourism and art commercialization. Police testify, mention Margriet as Engeline’s murderer

DENPASAR - Public prosecutor of the Denpasar Prosecutor’s Office resumed the trial of Engeline’s murder with the suspect Agustay Hamda May, Tuesday (Jan. 5). Of the four policemen that were about to be presented as witnesses, only two testified before the panel of judges led by Edward Harris Sinaga. As usual, Agustay was accompanied by his legal counsel chaired by Haposan Sihombing. Both witnesses are I Nyoman Ardika from Denpasar Police and I Made Budi Budiasa alias Budi Dukun from Bali Police. Before the court, Ardika initially told about the chronologies how he got to the scene on Jalan Sedap Malam, East Denpasar. Initially, the witness said that he went to the location on Jalan Sedap Malam because there was a report on missing child in East Denpasar Police. His visit to the scene coincided with Arist Merdeka Sirait. He admitted to have been at the scene, but was unable to enter the house area due to being late. He was just across the street. He heard the interview and Margriet was heard yelling. “I saw Agus going out and moving toward me. Agus said, I am a nomad and ready to die,” said the witness. Such answer was expressed because Margriet is alleged to have threatened Agustay with a sharp weapon. But the witness said he did not see Margriet carrying a sharp weapon. “I was moving towards the front gate, and Agus went out towards me,” continued the witness. The witness also admitted to come to the scene almost every day, and even his men had interrogated a number of people. “What the witness did at the scene is related to the missing child, and there was even a quarrel and said to be ready to die, why is there no follow up? What did police do there every day?” asked the judge. Witness tried to answer that he was at the scene to make an investigation responded to the report at the East Denpasar Police. “So, what do you know about the defendant (Agustay—Ed)? Why were you there?” asked the judge. The witness said that he was alleged to get involved in the murder case of Engeline. The judge pursued with a key question, namely how far was the involvement of

The police officer said that Margriet did. Judge clarified how the witness knew that Margriet is the culprit. It is said, that it was known from the Denpasar Police investigator. Later, Budi Dukun explained that he had time to meet Agus, Margriet, Handono and Susiani. “I have interviewed Agus,” said the witness. His question to Agus, when feeding chickens, how can Engeline miss? The witness had checked the mobile phone of the defendant Agustay, and could also repair it. He saw SMS conversation. N. Korea says it conducts successful powerful H-bomb test

SEOUL — North Korea said it conducted a powerful hydrogen bomb test Wednesday, a defiant and surprising move that, if confirmed, would be a huge jump in Pyongyang’s quest to improve its still-limited nuclear arsenal. South Korea’s spy agency and outside nuclear experts cast strong doubt, however, saying the estimated explosive yield from North Korea’s fourth nuclear explosion was much smaller than what even a failed H-bomb detonation would produce. The doubts didn’t stop jubilation and pride in Pyongyang. A North Korean television anchor, reading a typically propaganda-heavy statement, said a test of a “miniaturized” hydrogen bomb had been a “perfect success” that elevated the country’s “nuclear might to the next level.” State media later crowed that its “H-bomb of justice” lets it stand firm against U.S. aggression. A large crowd celebrated in front of Pyongyang’s main train station as the announcement was read on a big video screen, with people taking videos or photos of the screen on their mobile phones and applauding and cheering. In Seoul and elsewhere there was high-level worry. South Korean President Park Geun-hye ordered her military to bolster its combined defense posture with U.S. forces and called the test a “grave provocation” and “an act that threatens our lives and future.” Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said, “We absolutely cannot allow this.” Washington and nuclear experts have been skeptical about past North Korean claims about H-bombs, which are much more powerful and much more diffi-

cult to make, than atomic bombs. CHICAGO - US auto sales touched a new high in 2015 as easy credit, hot new vehicles and strong consumer confidence pushed sales slightly above the record set in 2000, industry data showed Tuesday. Some 17.47 million vehicles were sold in the United States last year, nearly 70,000 more than the record set 15 years earlier, according to Autodata. Sales were up six percent from the 16.52 million vehicles registered in 2014. The boom comes after sales collapsed to lows not seen in decades

China announces plan to limit large share sales

BEIJING — China plans to restrict stock sales by large shareholders once a ban imposed in July to stop a slide in prices is lifted this week. Stockholders who own more than 5 percent of a company will be required to sell shares through private transactions to “avoid shocks to the market,” the China Securities Regulatory Commission said on its microblog. Regulators are winding down emergency measures imposed after China’s main market index plunged more than 30 percent in June. The six-month ban imposed on sales by large shareholders expires Thursday. Financial analysts have warned that would lead to a new round of selling and more volatility. Markets are jittery after the benchmark fell by nearly 7 percent on Monday and trading was halted for the day. Restrictions on large sales will allow regulators “to realize the orderly withdrawal of temporary measures for the extraordinary volatility of the market,” said the CSRC statement dated Tuesday. The market benchmark more than doubled between late 2014 and its June 12 peak as millions of novice investors bought shares. The collapse in prices triggered a panicked response by Beijing, which banned large sales, cut interest rates, canceled initial public stock offerings and ordered state companies to buy shares. Chinese leaders had encouraged the public to buy in hopes of raising money to overhaul state industry. The market rout alienated small investors who were left holding shares worth less than they paid. Authorities say shares bought by state companies will be transferred to China’s sovereign wealth fund to avoid depressing prices by selling them in the open market. Malaysia Airlines lifts baggage ban on Europe flights

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia Airlines said Wednesday it has lifted a ban on check-in baggage on flights to Paris and Amsterdam, after the move angered many passengers who slammed the airline on social media. The U-turn came less than 24 hours after the airline announced that passengers cannot check-in baggage for Tuesday and Wednesday flights to the two European cities due to “unseasonably strong headwinds” on a longer flight path it is taking. The airline said it recently had to operate a longer route to Europe, via Egyptian airspace, for safety reasons. It said strong headwinds over the past four days were in excess of 200 knots, which can add up to 15 percent to fuel burn on its Boeing

777 aircraft. “Based on its current risk assessment, done on a daily basis, the airline is now able to take a shorter route on European flights. Malaysia Airlines maintains that safety is of utmost priority in its operations and will not hesitate to adjust its flight path based on its daily risk assessment,” it said in a brief statement. It didn’t elaborate on the change in route, and airline officials could not be reached immediately for comment. A Malaysia Airlines jet flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was shot down by a missile in eastern Ukraine in 2014, killing all 298 people on board. Many passengers left angry comments on the airline’s Facebook page, slamming it for being the only airline to impose such

a ban. Some of them said the airline should have limited the number of passengers and rejected freight instead. Others asked for a refund of their tickets. Losses of two flights in 2014 hit the finances of already struggling Malaysia Airlines. One flight heading to Beijing disappeared and is believed to have crashed in the Indian Ocean. That tragedy was followed months later by the Ukraine disaster. Last year, the airline appointed its first foreign CEO, Christoph Mueller, the former head of Ireland’s Aer Lingus, to oversee a major restructuring. The flight, operated by Indonesian flag carrier Garuda, was scheduled to take off Tuesday morning from the western island of Sumatra and head for Jakarta. But the pilot of the Boeing 737, which was carrying 156 passengers, decided not to take off after noticing a problem with the controls, according to Garuda. “An investigation found that the incident occurred because the plane’s electronic engine control suffered a technical problem after an insect got into a pitot tube,” airline spokesman Benny Butarbutar said in a statement. “Due to safety concerns, Garuda Indonesia decided to delay the flight.” Another Garuda official confirmed it was a bee that became trapped in the pitot tube, a vital piece of equipment which measures airspeed. The airline did not say whether the bee survived the ordeal. After being repaired, the plane took off and landed safely in Jakarta on Tuesday afternoon. Butarbutar insisted the incident was beyond the airline’s control, but said that passengers had nevertheless been given money as compensation. It is not the first time an errant bee has caused an aviation incident. Last June, British budget airline Flybe was forced to abandon a flight shortly after take-off when a bee became lodged in an instrument. The latest bee delay emerged as beleaguered carrier Malaysia Airlines announced it was reversing a decision to restrict check-in luggage for some Europe-bound flights due to “unseasonably strong headwinds”. Therefore, several concrete measures such as the budget for the tourism sector has to be increased to support the development of tourism spots. Several beaches that require special attention are Namosain, Nun Su’i, Pasir Panjang, and Kelapa Lima. “We have already built lopo (traditional cottage in Kupang) and facilities made of

concrete in Namosain and Kelapa Lima beaches, so that the people can enjoy and relax during their visit,” Salean explained. Due to the limitation in the local government’s budget, some policies and development plans related to tourism in Kupang will be carried out gradually. The government of Kupang has also invited local and foreign investors to invest in the tourism sector.

Filipinos raped by Japanese WWII troops demand compensation

MANILA — A group of elderly Filipino women raped by Japanese troops during World War II called for compensation from Japan on Wednesday, following Tokyo’s pledge of $8.3 million for South Korean women forced into Japanese militaryrun brothels during the war. COLOGNE, Germany — German police said Wednesday that they are investigating whether a string of sexual assaults and thefts at New Year is linked to a known criminal network. The assaults in Cologne last week have prompted outrage in Germany and a fresh debate about immigration, after police said the perpetrators appeared to be of “Arab or North African origin.” A spokesman for police in the nearby city of Duesseldorf said officers there have identified more than 2,000 suspects of North African origin in connection with organized theft offenses since the start of 2014. Some of the offenses also involved sexual assaults as a means of distracting victims, and Duesseldorf police were cooperating closely with their counterparts in Cologne to examine possible ties to crimes there, spokesman Markus Niesczeri told The Associated Press on Wednesday. Filipinos raped by Japanese WWII troops demand compensation

MANILA — A group of elderly Filipino women raped by Japanese troops during World War II called for compensation from Japan on Wednesday, following Tokyo’s pledge of $8.3 million for South Korean women forced into Japanese militaryrun brothels during the war. CHICAGO - US auto sales touched a new high in 2015 as easy credit, hot new vehicles and strong consumer confidence pushed sales slightly above the record set in 2000, industry data showed Tuesday. Some 17.47 million vehicles were sold in the United States last year, nearly 70,000 more than the record set 15 years earlier, according to Autodata. Sales were up six percent from the 16.52 million vehicles registered in 2014. The boom comes after sales collapsed to lows not seen in decades

in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis which knocked General Motors and Chrysler into bankruptcy. That downturn accelerated much-needed restructuring at the Detroit Three carmakers, which began racking in record profits when the economy improved and sales started climbing again. The good times are expected to

keep on rolling in 2016. “The US economy continues to expand and the most important factors that drive demand for new vehicles are in place, so we expect to see a second consecutive year of record industry sales in 2016,” said Mustafa Mohatarem, GM’s chief economist. “The single most important pieces are the ongoing gains in employment and the growth in personal income. When you add in lower energy prices, it’s easy to see why consumer spending is strong.”

Total industry sales rose nine percent in December, to 1.64 million vehicles, according to Autodata. The results come days before carmakers are set to reveal a host of new products at the Detroit auto show, where the mood is expected to be exuberant. “It’s truly remarkable that the auto industry is finishing off its best year ever just six years after the depths of the Great Recession,” said Jessica Caldwell, an analyst with the automotive website Ed-

China announces plan to limit large share sales

BEIJING — China plans to restrict stock sales by large shareholders once a ban imposed in July to stop a slide in prices is lifted this week. Stockholders who own more than 5 percent of a company will be required to sell shares through private transactions to “avoid shocks to the market,” the China Securities Regulatory Commission said on its microblog. Regulators are winding down emergency measures imposed after China’s main market index plunged more than 30 percent in June. The six-month ban imposed on sales by large shareholders expires Thursday. Financial analysts have warned that would lead to a new round of selling and more volatility. Markets are jittery after the benchmark fell by nearly 7 percent on Monday and trading was halted for the day. Restrictions on large sales will allow regulators “to realize the orderly withdrawal of temporary measures for the extraordinary volatility of the market,” said the CSRC statement dated Tuesday. The market benchmark more than doubled between late 2014 and its June 12 peak as millions of novice investors bought shares. The collapse in prices triggered a panicked response by Beijing, which banned large sales, cut interest rates, canceled initial public stock offerings and ordered state companies to buy shares. Chinese leaders had encouraged the public to buy in hopes of raising money to overhaul state industry. The market rout alienated small investors who were left holding shares worth less than they paid. Authorities say shares bought by state companies will be transferred to China’s sovereign wealth fund to avoid depressing prices by selling them in the open market. Malaysia Airlines lifts baggage ban on Europe flights

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia Airlines said Wednesday it has lifted a ban on check-in baggage on flights to Paris and Amsterdam, after the move angered many passengers who slammed the airline on social media. The U-turn came less than 24 hours after the airline announced that passengers cannot check-in baggage for Tuesday and Wednesday flights to the two European cities due to “unseasonably strong headwinds” on a longer flight path it is taking. The airline said it recently had to operate a longer route to Europe, via Egyptian airspace, for safety reasons. It said strong headwinds over the past four days were in excess of 200 knots, which can add up to 15 percent to fuel burn on its Boeing

777 aircraft. “Based on its current risk assessment, done on a daily basis, the airline is now able to take a shorter route on European flights. Malaysia Airlines maintains that safety is of utmost priority in its operations and will not hesitate to adjust its flight path based on its daily risk assessment,” it said in a brief statement. It didn’t elaborate on the change in route, and airline officials could not be reached immediately for comment. A Malaysia Airlines jet flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was shot down by a missile in eastern Ukraine in 2014, killing all 298 people on board. Many passengers left angry comments on the airline’s Facebook page, slamming it for being the only airline to impose such

a ban. Some of them said the airline should have limited the number of passengers and rejected freight instead. Others asked for a refund of their tickets. Losses of two flights in 2014 hit the finances of already struggling Malaysia Airlines. One flight heading to Beijing disappeared and is believed to have crashed in the Indian Ocean. That tragedy was followed months later by the Ukraine disaster. Last year, the airline appointed its first foreign CEO, Christoph Mueller, the former head of Ireland’s Aer Lingus, to oversee a major restructuring. The flight, operated by Indonesian flag carrier Garuda, was scheduled to take off Tuesday morning from the western island of Sumatra and head for Jakarta. But the pilot of the Boeing 737, which was carrying 156 passengers, decided not to take off after noticing a problem with the controls, according to Garuda. “An investigation found that the incident occurred because the plane’s electronic engine control suffered a technical problem after an insect got into a pitot tube,” airline spokesman Benny Butarbutar said in a statement. “Due to safety concerns, Garuda Indonesia decided to delay the flight.” Another Garuda official confirmed it was a bee that became trapped in the pitot tube, a vital piece of equipment which measures airspeed. The airline did not say whether the bee survived the ordeal. After being repaired, the plane took off and landed safely in Jakarta on Tuesday afternoon. Butarbutar insisted the incident was beyond the airline’s control, but said that passengers had nevertheless been given money as compensation. It is not the first time an errant bee has caused an aviation incident. Last June, British budget airline Flybe was forced to abandon a flight shortly after take-off when a bee became lodged in an instrument. Police testify, mention Margriet as Engeline’s murderer

DENPASAR - Public prosecutor of the Denpasar Prosecutor’s Office resumed the trial of Engeline’s murder with the suspect Agustay Hamda May, Tuesday (Jan. 5). Of the four policemen that were about to be presented as witnesses, only two testified before the panel of judges led by Edward Harris Sinaga. As usual, Agustay was accompanied by his legal counsel chaired by Haposan Sihombing. Both witnesses are I Nyoman Ardika from Denpasar Police and I Made Budi Budiasa alias Budi Dukun from Bali Police. Before the court, Ardika initially told about the chronologies how he got to the scene on Jalan Sedap Malam, East Denpasar. Initially, the witness said that he went to the location on Jalan Sedap Malam because there was a report on missing child in East Denpasar Police. His visit to the scene coincided with Arist Merdeka Sirait. He admitted to have been at the scene, but was unable to enter the house area due to being late. He was just across the street. He heard the interview and Margriet was heard yelling. “I saw Agus going out and moving toward me. Agus said, I am a nomad and ready to die,” said the witness. Such answer was expressed because Margriet is alleged to have threatened Agustay with a sharp weapon. But the witness said he did not see Margriet carrying a sharp weapon. “I was moving towards the front gate, and Agus went out towards me,” continued the witness. The witness also admitted to come to the scene almost every day, and even his men had interrogated a number of people. “What the witness did at the scene is related to the missing child, and there was even a quarrel and said to be ready to die, why is there no follow up? What did police do there every day?” asked the judge. Witness tried to answer that he was at the scene to make an investigation responded to the report at the East Denpasar Police. “So, what do you know about the defendant (Agustay—Ed)? Why were you there?” asked the judge. The witness said that he was alleged to get involved in the murder case of Engeline. The judge pursued with a key question, namely how far was the involvement of

N. Korea says it conducts successful powerful H-bomb test

SEOUL — North Korea said it conducted a powerful hydrogen bomb test Wednesday, a defiant and surprising move that, if confirmed, would be a huge jump in Pyongyang’s quest to improve its still-limited nuclear arsenal. South Korea’s spy agency and outside nuclear experts cast strong doubt, however, saying the estimated explosive yield from North Korea’s fourth nuclear explosion was much smaller than what even a failed H-bomb detonation would produce. The doubts didn’t stop jubilation and pride in Pyongyang. A North Korean television anchor, reading a typically propaganda-heavy statement, said a test of a “miniaturized” hydrogen bomb had been a “perfect success” that elevated the country’s “nuclear might to the next level.” State media later crowed that its “H-bomb of justice” lets it stand firm against U.S. aggression. A large crowd celebrated in front of Pyongyang’s main train station as the announcement was read on a big video screen, with people taking videos or photos of the screen on their mobile phones and applauding and cheering. In Seoul and elsewhere there was high-level worry. South Korean President Park Geun-hye ordered her military to bolster its combined defense posture with U.S. forces and called the test a “grave provocation” and “an act that threatens our lives and future.” Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said, “We absolutely cannot allow this.” Washington and nuclear experts have been skeptical about past North Korean claims about H-bombs, which are much more powerful and much more diffi-

One of the studies in the journal PLOS Biology analyzed a random sample of 441 biomedical journal articles published in the last 15 years, and found that only one included a full protocol of the information necessary for evaluating and replicating the research. Scientific studies are considered valid only if they can be reproduced by outside teams of researchers who come to the same conclusions using independent methods.

Furthermore, most of the studies did not say where their funding came from, and did not establish whether there were any conflicts of interest. “We hope our survey will further sensitize scientists, funders, journals and other science-related stakeholders about the need to improve these indicators,” wrote the study authors, who included prominent scientist John Ioannidis from the Meta-Research Innovation Center at Stanford University

and Shareen Iqbal from Emory University. A separate study by researchers in Germany examined hundreds of published experiments on stroke and cancer research and found that most did not contain sufficient information about how many animals were used. In many papers, the number of animals used over the course of the “vanished,” making any conclusions far less reliable. “The study began with an attempt to look at the robustness of findings in a handful of preclinical papers” said first author Constance Holman, a researcher at Charite Universitatsmedizin.

“But the sheer number of missing animals stopped us in our tracks.” When human subjects are part of a clinical trial, information about how many took part is considered crucial to the findings, and would not be left out of the published study, the authors said. An accompanying editorial in PLOS Biology noted that a “credibility crisis” is ravaging scientific research. For instance, a recent attempt to replicate 100 psychology studies found that only 39 percent could in fact be reproduced. Other previous research has found that “85 percent of research

CHICAGO — A prescription drug for yeast infections may increase chances for miscarriages when used early in pregnancy, a large study in Denmark suggests. The 17-year study involved oral versions of fluconazole, available in pills or liquid. It doesn’t provide any proof of harm, although the drug has been linked with other problems when used in high doses in pregnancy. The researchers looked at more than 1 million pregnancies in Denmark, comparing outcomes among

women who used oral fluconazole and those who didn’t. Women who used the drug during the first six months of pregnancy were almost 50 percent more likely than nonusers to have a miscarriage. Women at increased risk included those on a low 150-milligram dose; those on higher doses faced greater miscarriage risks. While fewer than 10 percent of women in each group had miscarriages — they totaled 710 — the researchers said doctors should use caution in prescribing the drug early

Earlier, in June of 2012, Bali has obtained the Balinese cultural landscape stipulated by United Nations body as a world cultural heritage with the label of ‘The Cultural Landscape of Bali Province: the Subak System as a Manifestation of the Tri Hita Karana Philosophy.’ On that account, Bali has achieved two titles from the UNESCO.

Calonarang at Campuhan Windhu Segara Temple

COINCIDING with Shivaratri celebrations, Friday (Jan. 8) is the peak of the piodalan or temple anniversary of Campuhan Windhu Segara Temple at Padanggalak, Kesiman. The Piodalan celebrations will begin with the installation of ritual paraphernalia followed by melasti on Thursday (Jan. 7). On Friday night the Calonarang ballet will be staged and the peak of the piodalan will be carried out around 10:00 am on Saturday (Jan.8) and worshiping will go on until January 10th. The head of Campuhan Temple, I Wayan Mudhita, accompanied by the secretary, I Made Sueca, explained that this temple is the biggest campuhan (confluence) in Bali and is thronged by pilgrims every day. A number of volunteers have been doing devotional service by preparing some ritual oblations for the piodalan and many people have donated other things needed for the ritual. Currently the temple that is better known for the palukatan sudamala (purificatory rite) that take place there, also has a beji temple, a shrine for Lord Varuna, a Shiva-Buddha chamber, Pusering Jagat, Lord Brahma, Queen, two tajuk, Ratu Gede Mas Mecaling, padmasana and prajapati temples. There are now three new psalmodic (pawedan) pavilions and a gamelan that were recently completed. There is also a Saraswati pavilion for religious education and an ashram

for people from outside Denpasar. Wayan Mudhita explained that all the shrines were built thanks to donations from Balinese and nonBalnese people. The Calonarang ballet to be staged on Friday will be entitled Sumambang. The performance of the ballet is supported by volunteers and the Tri Pusaka Sakti dance studio from Batuan, Sukawati, Gianyar. Interestingly, for the occasion, the sanctified effigies at the temple in the form of two rangdas or ratu ayu, barong bangkal (boar) and barong macan (tiger) will be taken out and staged. Ida Ratu Ayu Manik Segara, Ratu Ayu Lingsir, Ratu Ayu Durga, Barong Macan and Barong Bangkal venerated at the Campuhan Temple will be presented with animal sacrifice (caru) at the end of the story. The three rangdas will be played by female artists namely Jero Alit, Jero Widya and Luh Putu Campuhan. “This is the difference from the other Calonarang. We involve women because Watunateng Dirah is a woman’s role,” explained Mahaguru Aiteri Naranaya and Mangku Istri, Shri Saci Sanjiwani. It is Jero Mangku Campuhan who had the idea for the title and roles of this Calonarang ballet. He explained that this Calonarang ballet will involve 100 artists with a watangan math (role of corpse), and the whole thing will be set to music played by the Tri Pusaka Sakti gamelan troup. (sue)

Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Darma Putra, a lecturer at the tourism studies of the Udayana University, said that from long time ago the Balinese dances have become the icon of cultural tourism. The UNESCO stipulated the Balinese dances as world cultural heritage in the meeting in Windhoek, Namibia, Africa (Dec. 2, 2015). In the meeting was set a number of world intangible cultural heritages, including the Balinese dance. A total of nine Balinese traditional dances were designated as intangible cultural heritage by the UNESCO. The nine dances are the Sanghyang Dedari, Rejang Dewa, Ritual Baris, Sidakarya Mask, Gambuh, Wayang Wong, Legong Keraton, Barong Ket and Joged Bumbung. The nine dances included in the world cultural heritage belong to three categories considering that Balinese dances or performing arts are divided into three, namely the wali (for sacred/ceremonial purposes), bebali (for semi-sacred purposes) and balih-balihan (for entertainment purposes). These categories were set out in a seminar in 1971 in anticipation of the effects of mass tourism and art commercialization. The wali dance consists of the Sanghyang Dedari, Rejang Dewa and Ritual Baris; bebali dance consists of the Sidakarya Mask, Gambuh and Wayang Wong, while the balih-balihan consists of the Legong Keraton, Barong Ket and Joged Bumbung. The nine dances respectively represent the origin of each district and city of Bali. If distinguished by its history, the wali dance originates from the eighth century until the fourteenth century; bebali dance from the fourteenth century until the nineteenth century; and balih-balihan dance originates from the nineteenth century until the present. Each dance is considered to represent its own figure such as I Made Sija (Sanghyang Dance), Ida Made Djelantik Ardana (Rejang Dance), I Made Ringan (Baris Dance), I Made Djimat (Gambuh Dance), I Nyoman Sumandi (Sidakarya Mask), I Nyoman Arcana (Wayang Wong), Ni Ketut Arini (Legong

He continued that in the stipulation session, the artist team of Bali led by Prof. Dr. I Wayan Dibia was about to showcase the beauty of the dance before the decision makers. “However, the plan could not be materialized because the entourage from Bali did not obtain a transit visa,” explained the lecturer who also teaches in the Faculty of Letters and Humanities, Udayana

University. Information about the stipulation of Balinese dance as the world intangible cultural heritage gives a joy to Bali. “Just imagine, the nomination process has been very difficult and tough since 2010,” said the Director of the Tourism Studies Program, Udayana University. Proposal of Bali was submitted through Jero Wacik when he was the Minister of Culture and Tourism. It was comprehensively written with the history of the dance, philosophy, functions and the life of the dance over the time. Furthermore, dog owners in the village will be signing a statement related to perarem (customary rules) related to rabies prevention in the village. Headman of Timpag, I Gusti W Sukewahana said that once the the perarem statement is drafted, it will be presented to residents. The idea is to have dog owners agree to care for their dogs properly by not letting them roam around freely, keeping them on leashes or in cages when necessary and having them vaccinated regularly. “If a rabies infected dog bites someone who subsequently dies, then the owner of the dog must bear all related expenses including burial costs,” said Sukewahana. Before eliminating the dogs in Timpag, Sukewahana gathered the local hamlet chiefs and customary village chiefs together to announce that they would be performing the dog eliminations. These local leaders then let other residents know about the plan. “So, if people did not want their dogs to be eliminated, they had to tie them up or put them in a cage. Also dog owners will be asked to sign a statement stating that they will not allow they dogs to roam around freely again,” he explained. Before implementing the eliminations of the dogs in Timpag village, local authorities gave a ritual notification (atur pining) at the trinity temples on the new moon, so that the activity would run smoothly. Also a special place was set aside to bury the dogs, on land owned by the village and ceremonies held for the burial of the dogs. Budget

The budget for handling mass eliminations of dogs in Tabanan was disbursed and the dog elimination schedule determined for each subdistrict. From the budget worth IDR 100 million, every livestock technical unit (UPTD) in each subdistrict targeted the elimination of 100 dogs. Head of the Tabanan Livestock Agency, Wayan Kotio, explained that the elimination fund of IDR 100 million is divided up between the subdistricts. “Each subdistrict received IDR 10 million worth of bullets, vaccines and other equipment needed to perform the eliminations,” said Kotio. Tabanan targeted the elimination of 1,000 dogs. “The target has been reached and the UPTDs are currently writing up their accountability reports,” said Kotio. The province is also conducting dog eliminations in areas that have reported cases of rabies but that are not covered under the district elimination program. (san)

THE THREAT of rabies that has emerged in the least few years, has yet to be completely overcome in Denpasar, although there have been no reports of humans becoming infected with rabies since 2012. This was confirmed by the Head of the Denpasar Health Agency, Luh Putu Sri Armini who added that people must nonetheless remain vigilant about the threat of rabies. Armini said that in order for Denpasar to remain free of rabies, health officers cannot be the only ones taking care of the matter. The public plays an important role in improving public health and maintaining rabies-free conditions. “We are still encouraging people to remain vigilant about the potential emergence of rabies cases in carrier animals,” she said.

When asked about the number of rabies cases in Denpasar city. Armini said that the first reported case was in 2008, but that she does not remember the exact figures. “I do not remember the number of cases since then, but data is available at the Denpasar Health Agency office. Obviously there have not been very many cases,” she said. In order to maintain Denpasar

as a rabies-free zone, Armini explained that the Health Agency continues to work with the Livestock, Fisheries and Maritime Affairs of Denpasar by doing things like disseminating information about health and the massive impact that rabies can have on humans. To address the threat of rabies, dog owners are expected to have their dogs vaccinated for rabies every year, to keep their dogs tied up so that dogs are not roaming around freely and to be aware that any new pet dog needs to be checked thoroughly. Since 2008 thousands of dogs and other carrier animals have been vaccinated. Between late 2008 and March 2011, an estimated population of 57,160 dogs were recorded as living in Denpasar, 88,525 vaccines were given, 9,331 dogs were eliminated with 27,829 pets remaining. (ara)

Balinese Temple Ceremony

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Alaya Resort Kuta is currently hosting an art exhibition in collaboration with Flash Charity Bali for a non-profit foundation that supports disabled members of the local community. The event is raising funds to empower people with special needs as well as generating awareness about the difficulties they face on a daily basis. A number of physically challenged artists are showing their works alongside celebrated Javanese painter, Dyani Sinung. Proceeds will be used to fund a number of worthy projects, including the establishment of a cake shop. This event is currently open daily in the resort’s Exhibition Space and will run until 12th January 2016.

Division Head of the Communicable Disease Control and Environmental Health (P2MPL) at the Tabanan Health Agency, Wayan Triana Suryanata, confirmed that they had been bitten by a dog with rabies and also confirmed that the victims received anti-rabies vaccines (VARs). The rabies infected dog belonged to a local resident who let their dog roam around freely. Indonesia turns to China as ethnic Uighurs join would-be jihadis

JAKARTA - Indonesian authorities are working with their counterparts in China to stem a flow of ethnic Uighur militants seeking to join Islamist jihadists in the world’s most populous Muslim country, Indonesia’s counter-terrorism chief said.
