Emma Stone extends run in Cabaret’
NEW YORK - Actress Emma Stone will extend her run as singer Sally Bowles opposite Tony winner Alan Cumming in the Broadway musical “Cabaret” for an additional two weeks, producers said on Monday. Stone, 26, who is nominated for a best supporting actress Golden Globe for her portrayal of an embittered daughter of a washed-up actor in the film “Birdman,” will play Bowles through Feb. 15. The actress, known for her roles in “The Help” and the superhero action franchise “The Amazing Spider-Man,” has won rave reviews in “Cabaret,” which is set during the
rise of Nazism in Berlin. The New York Times described Stone as “scintillating in an irresistible Broadway debut.” She replaced Michelle Williams in the role that was made famous by Liza Minnelli. “Cabaret” is based on Christopher Isherwood’s 1939 novel “Goodbye to Berlin,” which chronicles in part the seedy caba-
ret nightlife of the German capital in the final years of the Weimar Republic. Cumming will continue his role as Emcee in the revival of the 1998 Tony Award-winning production, which opened on April 24 at Studio 54, through March 29. One of New Jersey’s “Real Housewives” has gone to prison. Teresa Giudice surrendered at the Federal Correction Institution in Connecticut at about 3 a.m. Monday to begin serving a 15-month sentence for bankruptcy fraud, her attorney said. Giudice’s last meal before turning herself in was at a 24-hour diner near the facility, according to attorney James Leonard, who drove the “Real Housewives of New Jersey” star from her home in northern New Jersey to the prison, about 90 minutes north of New York City. Giudice and her husband, Giuseppe “Joe” Giudice, pleaded guilty last year to hiding assets from bankruptcy creditors and submitting phony loan applications to get some $5 million in mortgages and construction loans. Joe Giudice also pleaded guilty to failing to pay taxes totaling more than $200,000. Under terms of their plea agreements, Joe Giudice will start serving his 41-month sentence when Teresa Giudice is released, an arrangement aimed at ensuring the couple’s four daughters will have one parent at home at all times. Joe Giudice, born in Italy, is not an American citizen and faces an immigration hearing when he completes his sentence and is expected to be deported. His attorney has said Giudice came to the U.S. as an infant and didn’t know he wasn’t an American citizen until he was an adult. Attorneys said that under federal sentencing rules, Teresa Giudice could be eligible to be released by next December, and also could spend the last month or so of her sentence at a halfway house or under some form of home monitoring. The Giudices also are required to pay $414,000 in restitution under their plea agreement; Teresa Giudice sent the government a check for $200,000 in early October, according to court records. At the Giudices’ sentencing in October, U.S. District Judge Esther Salas criticized the couple for not disclosing all their assets as required under their plea agreement, calling it “the same pattern of obstruction, concealment and manipulation as they showed in the bankruptcy case.” Still, Salas sentenced Teresa Giudice to a sentence below the range sought by the U.S. attorney’s office and staggered her sentence with her husband’s so they wouldn’t be in prison at the same time and unable to care for their four daughters. Joe Giudice also pleaded guilty in state court in October to unlawful use of identification in a case involving a bogus driver’s license. His 18-month sentence will run concurrent with his federal sentence. (ap)

Dozens of billboards dismantled by force AMLAPURA - Dozens of billboards and banners in the town of Amlapura, were dismantled by Municipal Police on Monday (Jan 5), because the permits for posting them had expired. Some of the billboards had been installed in restricted areas that could compromise people’s mobility. The dismantling of the billboards and banners was also meant to clean up the town and reduce the slum like impression that the billboards created. Chief of the Karangasem Municipal Police, Iwan Suparta, revealed that at least 50 billboards and banners were already dismantled on the road between Amlapura and Jasri. The general cleanup was carried out at this particular moment, given that many of the signs were holyday greetings for Galungan, Kuningan and New Years. Aside from the billboards posted by organizations, the ones posted by the regent and deputy regent of Karangasem were also dismantled. Before dismantling, Suparta claimed to have sent a warning letter to those who had posted the billboards, asking them to take down their signs. On Monday, the police
took down any remaining signs. “We have kept all the dismantled billboards in the office of the Karangasem Municipal Police. The owners are welcome to collect their property from the office,” he said. To take down all the billboards, a total of 18 personnel from the Karangasem Municipal Police were deployed and divided into two teams. Iwan Suparta admitted that most of the billboards were mounted on roadside and pegged onto trees. “In accordance with the rules of billboard installation on roadsides, it is forbidden to peg signs to trees,” he explained. In 2015, his party would further tighten the regulations on the
installation of billboards and banners in Amlapura. Poorly organized billboard installations, according to Iwan Suparta, gives a slum-like impression to the town of Karangasem. For this reason, his party has appealed to community leaders and organizations to coordinate in advance with the Municipal Police of Karangasem prior to installing such signs. Any billboards or banners installed in restricted areas would immediately issue a letter of reprimand. “We try to persuade people to dismantle illegal signs themselves, but failing this officers demolish the signs by force,” he concluded. AMLAPURA - For the safety of passengers, the boat crossing from Padangbai Harbor to Gili Trawangan tourist attraction, Lombok, NTB, was closed. Strong winds in the Straits of Lombok were followed by high waves reaching 1 to 3 meters caused the boat crossing to be crossing be unsafe. When the weather returns to normal, the crossing will be opened again. Harbor administrator of Padangbai, Ketut Aryadana, revealed that a number of boats that usually serve the PadangbaiLombok crossing had to be postponed due to unfavorable weather condition. “The crossing was postponed today (Monday) due to bad weather” he said. Moreover, the possibility of high waves occurs due to erratic weather conditions. Bad weather would not affect large-sized vessels because the wave height limit was still around 1 to 3 meters. Crossing service on the Padangbai-Lembar was not disturbed and could still be in operation. “The crossing remains normal and is going well. We do not need to apply the open-close system here,” he explained. Ketut Aryadana ensured that the boat crossing services would be reopend when the weather was back to normal. However, his party could not ascertain when the weather would go back to normal. “If tomorrow (Tuesday) the weather is fine, we will be in operation. But if the waves unexpectedly go higher, we will have to delay the crossing by applying the open-close system,” he concluded. (kmb)
Landslide in Pupuan, traffic hampered by materials
TABANAN - Landslides occurred again in Tabanan County. After having previously occurred in Penebel subdistrict, on Sunday night (Jan 4) another landslide occurred in Pupuan subdistrict, on the highway at Batungsel Kelod hamlet, Pupuan. Fortunately, the incident did not claim any casualties. However, the 30 meter high landslide with a diameter of 50 meters, caused the traffic of Pupuan-Antosari-Singaraja to be disrupted by landslide debri that covered half the road. Subdistrict head of Pupuan, Putu Arya Suta, said that landslide occurred around 8:15 p.m. That night the Pupuan area was flushed out by heavy rain all day. “Fortunately the road was quite, whereas usually many vehicles pass through the area where the landslide occurred,” he said, Monday (Jan 5). Upon receiving the report of a landslide, his party promptly contacted relevant parties, namely the Tabanan Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) and the officials of the province to deal with the materials covering the provincial road. “That night officers removed the landslide debris with heavy equipment from the Bali Public Works Agency,” he explained. As the evacuation process took place, the road connecting Pupuan to Singaraja only had one lane open, large enough for small vehicles. Heavy trucks had to stop temporarily as the road could not handle such loads. “This morning (Monday) the road is back to normal. Meanwhile, the remaining landslide materials continue to be cleaned up so that they will not spread to road again when it rains.” he concluded. (kmb28)

Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Smart gadgets take center stage at CES LAS VEGAS — Imagine a world in which your garage door opens automatically as you pull into the driveway. The living room lights and heater turn on — perhaps the oven starts warming up, too. In the so-called “smart home,” cars, appliances and other devices all have sensors and Internet connectivity to think and act for themselves, and make your life easier. We’re not there just yet, but we’re getting closer. The smart-home concept is known in tech circles as the Internet of Things. Current iterations primarily include our ability to control gadgets such as lights and security alarms or view data remotely through a smartphone app. At the International CES gadget show in Las Vegas this week, manufacturers will promote more devices and functionality. Some gadgets will be able to talk directly with one another, not just to an app. The four-day show opens to the public Tuesday. The Internet of Things could mean big business for gadget makers. The Consumer Electronics Association projects U.S. sales of smart energy and security systems alone will total $574 million this year, a 23 percent increase from 2014. Although that pales by comparison to the $18 billion spent on TVs and displays, growth has been swift. In terms of people smartening up their homes in earnest, though, it will probably be another two years before devices are cheap and widespread enough for the typical consumer, says Eduardo Pinheiro, CEO of Muzzley, which makes a hub that allows devices to talk to each other.
For now, the smart home is more about possibilities than practice. Many companies exhibiting at CES are laying the foundation for what a smart-home system will eventually do, hoping to entice consumers to start thinking about upgrading to smart gadgets. It’s not always an easy sell. Consider wearable devices that track fitness and other activities. In many cases, the novelty wears off quickly, and devices end up in drawers. But what if a wearable device that tracks sleep could tell the coffeemaker to start brewing as soon as you awoke? When the coffee’s done, what if the sprinklers on the front lawn automatically turned off so you didn’t get wet walking out the front door to work? “It’s these great benefits that we need to explain,” says BK Yoon, Samsung’s CEO and chief of consumer electronics. “We can’t just talk about the Internet of Things because it’s so impersonal like a bedtime story for robots. After the price hike, the average selling price of blue canister LPG at sales agency became IDR 11,225 per kg or IDR 134,700 per canister from the previous price of an average of IDR 125,000 per canister. As a result of the increase, the communities especially in urban areas preferred to use the subsidized 3-kg LPG canister.

was merely intended for tourism vessel, the entire container ships would be directed to Celukan Bawang as set forth in the master plan of Celukan Bawang Harbor. “The role of Celukan Bawang Harbor will be developed in the future into a cargo harbor. It will depend on the status of Benoa Harbor whether it has become a special tourism harbor. As a result, cargo ships will certainly be directed to the North,” he said. commodities such as iron, timber and cement, including the locally made cement of Indonesia to Vietnam. Distribution of cement was mostly sent to Denpasar. BANGLI – The high volume of plastic waste generated by Bangli County and managed by waste bank groups is not coalesced into a waste bank communication forum. It is very much the hope of group head of the Dywik Waste Bank at Taman Bali village of Bangli, I Wayan Sutirka, that such a forum will be created. According to Sutirka, the creation of a forum, would allow people who care about plastic waste to share their knowledge with each other, including those aspects related to waste management. “We hope to get the attention of the government in order to establish a communication forum for waste banks,” he said on Monday (Jan 5). So far, there is only one waste bank in Bangli County, which can nowhere near handle to volume of waste produced. According to Sutirka, the amount of plastic waste generated in the area and which, could be collected by his waste bank, comes out to about 55,588 kg. This figure includes waste from all subdistricts in Bangli. Every month, the plastic waste generated amounts to some 4,000 to 7,000 kg. Such a high volume of plastic waste has urged him to think creatively about how to resolve the existing problems both regarding the selling price and product marketing. For this reason the presence of a communication forum is necessary. The government should not only focus in terms of waste collection,
but should also encourage the emergence of creative ideas from other waste banks that could be gathered in the context of a forum. He added that creation of such a communication forum was more important than the addition of more waste banks. According to him, existing waste banks already cover many sub-units so this is not a problem in itself. “The number of waste banks is not the problem, rather communication between the different counties is what is still less than optimal, thus the importance of creating a communication forum” he added. So far, communication related to plastic waste management is only taking place amongst the housewife organization (PKK) and schools in Bangli. Regarding the amount of plastic waste, the Control Subdivision Head of the Bangli Environment Agency, Gusti Laksana said “Exisitng junk banks have been handling the plastic waste”. Laksana, added that “before the presence of waste banks, the Environment Agency used to collect the waste and transport it to landfills. Now it is different, the Environment Agency just coordinates with the waste banks in terms of waste collection. “In the past, we went directly to schools to collect plastic waste. Now, we just need to coordinate with waste banks where people bring their plastic” said Laksana. (sos)

US senator urges changes to avoid repeat of CIA torture WASHINGTON — The outgoing chairman of the Senate intelligence committee is urging a series of policy and legislative changes to ensure that the U.S. government never again tortures detainees, even as polls show that a majority of Americans believe harsh CIA interrogations after Sept. 1, 2001 attacks against the U.S. were justified. Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein presided over a five-year investigation that resulted in last month’s release of parts of a report that harshly described the CIA practice of torture against terror detainees after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. The 525-page executive summary cited the CIA’s own documents in finding that the agency’s interrogation program was more brutal than previously understood and failed to produce unique intelligence that couldn’t have been obtained through traditional methods. President Barack Obama has called the practices torture, something former CIA officials dispute. The executive summary of the Senate report, written by Feinstein staff members, documents CIA mismanagement and misrepresentations, some of which the agency has acknowledged. In a letter to Obama released Monday, Feinstein outlined a series of recommendations “intended to make sure that the United States
never again engages in actions that you have acknowledged were torture.” The documented shortcomings in the CIA’s decade-old interrogation program “should prompt additional oversight and better sharing of information for all covert action and significant intelligence collection programs,” she said. Feinstein said she will introduce legislation in the upcoming Congress to codify Obama’s executive order banning torture and prohibiting the CIA from detaining prisoners. Her office said she introduced similar legislation in 2009, but then began to focus on the investigation and wanted to wait for its outcome before pressing for changes. “We didn’t know then that the study would not be completed until the end of 2014, so we went down the track of the investigation with the idea that recommendations would follow from what we found,” her top intelligence aide, David Grannis, said in an email. Feinstein also called for a series of policy changes designed to force the CIA to better manage its covert actions and more fully inform Congress about them. And she urged new rules to ensure better accountability at the CIA, an agency where managerial and operational negligence has often gone unpunished. (ap)
Cosby is the only defendant in the lawsuit, originally filed last month by Tamara Green, who said he drugged and assaulted her in the 1970s. The two new plaintiffs are Therese Serignese, who said he drugged and raped her in 1976, and Linda Traitz, who alleges he tried to drug her and then sexually groped her in 1970. Attorney Joseph Cammarata, who represents the three women, said the civil action allows them to have their allegations heard since criminal statutes of limitation have expired. “The lawsuit provides an opportunity for women who claim to have been harmed to have their day in court in a forum where the truth can be tried,” he said. Cosby’s publicist David Brokaw and lawyer Martin Singer did not immediately respond to requests
for comment Monday. Singer has said he expected to prevail in the original lawsuit. Green first spoke publicly about her allegations in 2005. She said in the lawsuit that after she did media interviews Brokaw and Cosby’s lawyer Walter M. Phillips Jr. made statements intended to expose her to public contempt and ridicule. Phillips said last month he represented Cosby in 2005 but no longer does, and he declined to comment further. Brokaw did not return messages then seeking comment on Green’s allegations. Serignese and Traitz, who are from Florida, allege in the amended complaint that when they came forward separately last November, Singer issued responses for Cosby that said they and other accusers were lying. Since November, at least 15
women have come forward with claims Cosby sexually assaulted them decades ago. Most of the women say he drugged them before he assaulted them. Cosby, who starred as Dr. Cliff Huxtable on “The Cosby Show” from 1984 to 1992, has never been charged in connection with any of the allegations, and through his representatives he has denied them. A 2005 lawsuit by a Pennsylvania woman was settled before it went to trial. Cosby’s career unraveled after his accusers came forward, with a TV project halted and nearly a dozen standup comedy tour performances canceled or indefinitely postponed. DETROIT — Confident in the economy and cheered by cheap gas, Americans are likely to push new car sales to their highest level in a decade this year. Analysts expect sales to reach 17 million for the first time since 2005. That’s close to the record of 17.3 million set in 2000. Low gas prices are giving buyers more confidence, whether they’re buying their first subcompact or upgrading to a larger SUV. Gas prices started this year at an average of $2.23 per gallon, down 33 percent from the beginning of 2014, according to AAA. The Energy Department estimates that lower gasoline prices will save U.S. households $550 this year — about four months of lease payments on a 2014 Honda Civic. Popular new vehicles, like the Jeep Cherokee and Subaru Outback, are also drawing buyers. Sales have now grown for five consecutive years — a rarity in the volatile auto industry. While sales are growing, the pace has slowed from double-digit
increases in 2011 and 2012. That’s good news for buyers, who can expect to see bigger discounts in competitive segments like midsize cars as automakers fight to steal sales from each other. Alec Gutierrez, an analyst with the car buying site Kelley Blue Book, thinks sales could stay in the 17-million range for the next two or three years if interest rates stay low and the U.S. economy remains healthy. December, with its holiday discounts and warmer-than-usual weather, brought buyers out in droves, with sales up 11 percent over the previous year. Automakers reported December and full-year sales Monday. For all of 2014, sales were up 6 percent to 16.5 million vehicles, according to Autodata Corp. That was the biggest year for the industry since 2006.
Back then — as now — the Ford F-Series was the country’s best-selling vehicle and the midsize Toyota Camry was the best-selling car. The top-selling SUV was the Ford Explorer, but it was only No. 14 among all vehicles sold, according to Ward’s AutoInfoBank. In 2014 two smaller SUVs — the Honda CR-V and the Ford Escape — cracked the top 10 in sales as customers turned away from small and midsize cars as car-like handling and low gas prices made such vehicles more appealing. Toyota, Fiat Chrysler and General Motors all reported 2014 sales increases, and Nissan, Subaru, Hyundai and Honda reported record numbers for the year. WTI fell as low as $49.95 -- a level not seen since May 2009 -Monday before closing at $50.04, down $2.65 from Friday. Brent fell $3.31 to $53.11. “The price rebound (in Asia) is likely to be provisional as traders anticipate short-term moves in the oil market in this blow-off phase,” Michael McCarthy, chief market strategist at CMC Markets in Sydney, told AFP. Monday’s slide followed indications of rising output from key producers Russia and Iraq at a time when forecasters have trimmed their demand projections due to weak global economic growth. A long rally in the greenback, which gained 11 percent last year against a
basket of major currencies, has also weighed on the dollar-priced oil market by making crude more expensive for buyers using weaker units. Analysts are warning of further losses to come for the black gold. Oil has dropped about 50 percent since June on worries about weak demand and a decision by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries not to cut output in response to lower prices and higher supplies. Monday’s heavy losses are a reminder to the market “that oil fundamentals have not changed just because we entered into the New Year,” said Daniel Ang, investment analyst at Phillip Futures in Singapore. “To further exacerbate the problem, a New Year means a new slate for oil bears and with them coming back to the market, this pushes the prices down further,” he said. TOKYO - Toyota will give away thousands of patents for its fuel-cell cars, it said Tuesday, in an effort to encourage other automakers into the new industry. The world’s largest vehicle maker said it will allow royalty-free use of about 5,680 patent licences, including 1,970 related to fuel-cell stacks and 3,350 concerning fuel-cell system control technology. The firm also said the free patent licences will include about 290 items related to high-pressure hydrogen tanks. The cost-free licences will be allowed “through the initial market introduction period” of fuel cell vehicles (FCV), which the company expects to last until about 2020. Toyota will also open about 70 patent licences related to hydrogen stations -- the equivalent of gas stands for internal combustion vehicles, and a vital link in the chain for drivers -- indefinitely for manufacturers and operators. “By allowing royalty-free use of FCV-related patent licences, Toyota is going one step further as it aims to promote the widespread use of FCVs and actively contribute to the realisation of a hydrogen-based society,” the
automaker said in a statement. The announcement came after Toyota last month rolled out the world’s first mass market fuel-cell car -- the four-door Mirai sedan -- in Japan. The car -- whose name means “future” in Japanese -- will hit the US and some European countries, including Britain, Germany and Denmark, in 2015, Toyota has said. It hopes to sell more than 3,000 units of the car by the end of 2017 in the United States, and up to 100 annually in Europe. Fuel-cell cars are seen as the Holy Grail of green cars as they are powered by a chemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen, which produces nothing more harmful than water at the point of use. But a limited driving range and lack of refuelling stations have hampered development of fuel-cell and their cousin, all-electric cars, which environmentalists say could play a vital role in cutting greenhouse gas emissions and slowing global warming. The Mirai can travel about 650 kilometres (400 miles) without refuelling, some three times further than an electric car, and its tank can be filled in a few minutes like gasoline engine vehicles, according to Toyota. Kapal village. However, once upon a time the Kapal village was found in famine condition, where people had no food and it led to chaos and pathetic condition. Ki Kebo Iwa eventually invoked an instruction to the Creator by meditation at the Purusadha Temple. In his meditation, he got a revelation from Hyang Pasupati instructing the local residents to implement the Aci Rah Pengangon or Aci Rare Angon by presenting tipat-bantal. Both offerings served as the symbol of the source of life because the cause of the famine was in the absence of the source of life. Since then, the ritual was routinely implemented where people gathered in front of the Desa Temple of Kapal village. Local people then divided themselves into two groups, each of which held tipat and bantal as weapon. Baleganjur gamelan music and the sound of kulkul or wooden split drum accompanied the war. After an instruction from local village apparatus, both groups then attacked each other by throwing the
tipat-bantal. At the beginning, the war took place in the middle courtyard of the temple and then it was resumed to outer courtyard, highway of Kapal village. The tipat or bantal was just like a bullet dashing so quickly. People who became throwers were trance-like and striking blindly. Even, many of them were topless, but still put on customary clothing such as headband, fabrics and selempot. Although having to throw in one direction, namely northward and southward, some ignorantly threw towards people who witnessed the war tradition. However, they were all excited and happy. Interestingly, despite attacking and throwing each other with tipat and bantal, none would get wound or injury. Even, they vivaciously expressed more laughter. The war lasted for about 30 minutes and then ended with a mutually shaking hands and forgiving. All the residents then cleared the path from the remnants of the tipat and bantal.
Residents were also advised to take some pieces of the tipat and bantal to take home, and then spread in the moors and paddy fields. Chief of Kapal customary village, Anak Agung Gede Dharmayasa, said that taking some pieces of tipat and bantal to the home symbolized a request that all residents could still be bestowed with the abundance of fertility, food and welfare. “This is a form of respect for the universal energy creating the life and a procession to preserve the life survival with the concept of keeping the motherland, as the land is a tangible manifestation of the giver and sustainer of life for every creature on this earth,” he said. Kapal village, he explained, had a total of 2,247 families spreading across 18 customary hamlets. For this event, each family was required to submit 1 kg of rice or sticky rice. From this submission, the village could collect at least 1,800 kg or 1.8 tons of tipat and bantal. “It is also in part because some are not coming,” he added. (kmb)

This tradition is closely related to farming life of Kapal village implemented as an expression of gratitude to God for the abundant harvest at the village. (Balinese long glutinous cake) as a symbol of masculine energy (purusha) represented by the presence of mother earth or the earth in physical form as the soil. The resulted food is the main weapon to defend the life itself. The tipat-bantal war tradition this year became more unique since it was collaborated with the art composition. A dance drama composition choreographed by Anak Agung Gede Rahma Putra was presented with the storyline about the origin of the war. The composition presented Baris Bantal and Rejang Tipat Dance by teen artists. Its musical accompaniment used selonding gamelan set so that it gave a regal and classical impression. Thailand nabs fugitive convicted in 1995 India bombing BANGKOK — Thai police said Tuesday that they have arrested a fugitive convicted in India for his involvement in a 1995 bomb attack that killed a chief minister of a northern Indian state and 15 other people. Gurmeet Singh, one of six Sikh militants convicted for the blast outside government headquarters in Punjab state, fled a high-security Indian prison in 2004 before receiving a life sentence in 2007. The bomb, planted in then-Chief Minister Beant Singh’s bulletproof car, exploded and immediately killed the state’s highest elected official and 12 of his staff and armed guards. Three others who were wounded died later. The Babbar Khalsa International, a Sikh separatist group, claimed responsibility for the assassination. ADELAIDE, Australia — Firefighters in southern Australia were winning the battle on Tuesday to contain a sprawling wildfire raging on a 240-kilometer (150-mile) perimeter that has razed 38 homes and left two people in hospitals, officials said. Hundreds of firefighters have struggled since Friday last week to control the blaze that has razed 12,500 hectares (31,000 acres) of farms and woodland in hills northwest of the South Australia state capital Adelaide. “I’m happy to report we’ve made some significant progress on securing the outer perimeter during the course of the day and our crews will continue working into the night to secure the rest of the perimeter,” Country Fire Service chief officer Greg Nettleton told reporters. Firefighters were also close to securing the safety of 1,000 houses in unburnt pockets inside the fire zone and were managing to reopen some roads into scorched area, Nettleton said. Budget deficit set to be less than 2 percent
PANGKALAN BUN/JAKARTA - Search teams including divers took advantage of a let-up in bad weather on Tuesday to try to reach the wreckage of an AirAsia jet, but nine days after the plane crashed officials said there was still no sign of the crucial black box flight recorders.

She explained that the government’s recent policy to reduce official meetings at hotels indeed had impacted their revenues. However, the entrepreneurs were aware of the importance of implementing the policy. Hence, she affirmed that the entrepreneurs were proposing a moratorium on issuing permits for new hotel constructions in the future. Hotel and restaurant entrepreneurs also proposed to the gov-
ernment to improve connectivity and infrastructure in Indonesia to make it easier for tourists to travel within the country, Wiryanti emphasized. According to her, the dismal condition of airports and other infrastructure in some areas in Indonesia had made it difficult for tourists to travel within the country. Prior to coming down to earth, she transforms herself into Rangda (demon).
Goddess Uma then comes into a jungle and cuts down many kinds of trees. When she and her servants cut the last tree, suddenly it changes into Barong, where the Barong is actually the manifestation of Lord Shiva. He is angry because he just asks his consort and her servants to search remedy, not to cut down all the trees. After that, a fight breaks between the Barong and Rangda with her servants. However, all the servants instead stab themselves or better known as ngunying in Balinese language.

Knicks sending JR Smith, Shumpert to Cavs

NEW YORK — The New York Knicks are trading J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert to the disappointing Cavaliers, who have struggled in superstar LeBron James’ first season back in Cleveland. The Knicks agreed to trade Smith and Shumpert, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Monday night.
New York will get a second-round pick in 2019 from the Cavaliers, the person said on condition of anonymity because the trade was not yet official. New York, off to one of the worst starts in franchise history, plans to waive whatever players it acquires in the deal that also includes the Oklahoma City Thunder, according to reports. The Cavs, who dropped to 19-16 on Monday with a 95-92 loss in Philadelphia, pulled guard Dion Waiters from the starting lineup before the game amid speculation he’s on the move. Cleveland also sat reserves Lou Amundson and Alex Kirk. Following the loss, Cavs first-year coach David Blatt said team management requested the players be pulled due to discussions on a “possible trade.” Blatt said he did not have any other details. Cleveland has struggled to fill the shooting guard role, part of the reason for its sluggish start, which has also included a rash of key injuries. Both James and All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving sat out as the Cavs were beaten by the lowly Sixers, who got their first home win this season. Waiters, the No. 4 overall NBA draft pick in 2010, has been the subject of trade speculation for two seasons. He’s a proven scorer and his defense has improved this season under Blatt, but he hasn’t been able to nail down the spot and the Cavs also have tried Shawn Marion and Mike Miller next to Irving. Waiters has started three games this season and is averaging 10.5 points. He averaged 15.9 points last season, the highest average for any reserve in the Eastern Conference. James has missed the past five games with a strained knee and back and could be sidelined for another week, and the Cavs have already lost starting center Anderson Varejao for the season following an Achilles injury. It’s only going to get tougher for the Cavs, who face Houston at home on Wednesday and then go on a five-game West Coast trip. “We have to get as many players as we can get back,” center Kevin Love said. “We’re about to hit murderer’s row now on the West Coast. We need to keep fighting. We’re down but not out.” Smith was the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year in 2013, but has battled injuries to his heel this season, along with his usual struggles with his shot selection and focus off the court. The 39-year-old Prince Ali declared his intention Tuesday to run as a candidate in the FIFA presidential election on May 29 in Zurich, where Blatter has pledged to seek a fifth mandate at age 79. “This was not an easy decision,” the prince said in a single-page statement in which he pledged to run a positive campaign and did not specifically mention Blatter. “It came after careful consideration and many discussions with respected FIFA colleagues over the last few months.” “The message I heard, over and over, was that it is time for a change,” said Prince Ali, who has been encouraged to run by European football governing body UEFA and its President Michel Platini. During Blatter’s 17-year leadership, FIFA has been rocked by bribery allegations in presidential and World Cup hosting elections, kickbacks paid to senior officials and World Cup ticket scams. Prior to coming down to earth, she transforms herself into Rangda (demon).
Goddess Uma then comes into a jungle and cuts down many kinds of trees. When she and her servants cut the last tree, suddenly it changes into Barong, where the Barong is actually the manifestation of Lord Shiva. He is angry because he just asks his consort and her servants to search remedy, not to cut down all the trees. After that, a fight breaks between the Barong and Rangda with her servants. However, all the servants instead stab themselves or better known as ngunying in Balinese language.

NEW YORK — The New York Knicks are trading J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert to the disappointing Cavaliers, who have struggled in superstar LeBron James’ first season back in Cleveland. The Knicks agreed to trade Smith and Shumpert, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Monday night.
New York will get a second-round pick in 2019 from the Cavaliers, the person said on condition of anonymity because the trade was not yet official. New York, off to one of the worst starts in franchise history, plans to waive whatever players it acquires in the deal that also includes the Oklahoma City Thunder, according to reports. The Cavs, who dropped to 19-16 on Monday with a 95-92 loss in Philadelphia, pulled guard Dion Waiters from the starting lineup before the game amid speculation he’s on the move. Cleveland also sat reserves Lou Amundson and Alex Kirk. Following the loss, Cavs first-year coach David Blatt said team management requested the players be pulled due to discussions on a “possible trade.” Blatt said he did not have any other details. Cleveland has struggled to fill the shooting guard role, part of the reason for its sluggish start, which has also included a rash of key injuries. Both James and All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving sat out as the Cavs were beaten by the lowly Sixers, who got their first home win this season. Waiters, the No. 4 overall NBA draft pick in 2010, has been the subject of trade speculation for two seasons. He’s a proven scorer and his defense has improved this season under Blatt, but he hasn’t been able to nail down the spot and the Cavs also have tried Shawn Marion and Mike Miller next to Irving. Waiters has started three games this season and is averaging 10.5 points. He averaged 15.9 points last season, the highest average for any reserve in the Eastern Conference. James has missed the past five games with a strained knee and back and could be sidelined for another week, and the Cavs have already lost starting center Anderson Varejao for the season following an Achilles injury. It’s only going to get tougher for the Cavs, who face Houston at home on Wednesday and then go on a five-game West Coast trip. “We have to get as many players as we can get back,” center Kevin Love said. “We’re about to hit murderer’s row now on the West Coast. We need to keep fighting. We’re down but not out.” Smith was the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year in 2013, but has battled injuries to his heel this season, along with his usual struggles with his shot selection and focus off the court. Thailand nabs fugitive convicted in 1995 India bombing BANGKOK — Thai police said Tuesday that they have arrested a fugitive convicted in India for his involvement in a 1995 bomb attack that killed a chief minister of a northern Indian state and 15 other people. Gurmeet Singh, one of six Sikh militants convicted for the blast outside government headquarters in Punjab state, fled a high-security Indian prison in 2004 before receiving a life sentence in 2007. The bomb, planted in then-Chief Minister Beant Singh’s bulletproof car, exploded and immediately killed the state’s highest elected official and 12 of his staff and armed guards. Three others who were wounded died later. The Babbar Khalsa International, a Sikh separatist group, claimed responsibility for the assassination. Singh, also known as Jagtar Singh Tara, entered Thailand in October and was arrested Monday in the eastern province of Chonburi, Thai National police spokesman Lt. Gen. Prawut Thawornsiri said. “It took quite some time to arrest him. We had been following him for a while, but at one point he slipped off the radar,” he said. Prawut said Singh, 37, faces extradition to India. An Indian government official said the government was aware of the arrest and was in touch with Thai authorities. “All those who have committed heinous crimes in India will be pursued wherever they are,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter. ADELAIDE, Australia — Firefighters in southern Australia were winning the battle on Tuesday to contain a sprawling wildfire raging on a 240-kilometer (150-mile) perimeter that has razed 38 homes and left two people in hospitals, officials said. Hundreds of firefighters have struggled since Friday last week to control the blaze that has razed 12,500 hectares (31,000 acres) of farms and woodland in hills northwest of the South Australia state capital Adelaide. “I’m happy to report we’ve made some significant progress on securing the outer perimeter during the course of the day and our crews will continue working into the night to secure the rest of the perimeter,” Country Fire Service chief officer Greg Nettleton told reporters. Firefighters were also close to securing the safety of 1,000 houses in unburnt pockets inside the fire zone and were managing to reopen some roads into scorched area, Nettleton said. Budget deficit set to be less than 2 percent

Indonesian officials believe they may have located the tail and parts of the fuselage of the Airbus A320-200 at the bottom of the Java Sea, but strong currents, high winds and big waves have hindered attempts to investigate the debris. JAKARTA - The Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Entrepreneurs Association (PHRI) proposes a moratorium on the issuance of permits for new hotel constructions in several areas in the country, Chairman Wiryanti Sukamdani stated here on Tuesday. “Some areas such as Bali, Makassar, and West Java have more hotels than their normal capacity,” noted Wiryanti after meeting Vice President Jusuf Kalla on Tuesday. She explained that the government’s recent policy to reduce official meetings at hotels indeed had impacted their revenues. However, the entrepreneurs were aware of the importance of implementing the policy. Hence, she affirmed that the entrepreneurs were proposing a moratorium on issuing permits for new hotel constructions in the future. Hotel and restaurant entrepreneurs also proposed to the gov-
ernment to improve connectivity and infrastructure in Indonesia to make it easier for tourists to travel within the country, Wiryanti emphasized. According to her, the dismal condition of airports and other infrastructure in some areas in Indonesia had made it difficult for tourists to travel within the country. Divers join AirAsia wreck hunt, but no sign of black box located five large objects believed to be parts of the plane - the largest about 18 metres (59 feet) long - in shallow water. Search and rescue agency official Supriyadi, who is coordinating the operation from the southern Borneo town of Pangkalan Bun, said there had been no “pings” detected from the black box’s emergency locator beacon, possibly because it was buried in the seabed or the muddy water was impeding its signal. “They haven’t found anything, maybe because the water is turbid and there is zero visibility,” he said. “There’s a possibility it is buried in mud.” The captain of an Indonesian navy patrol vessel said on Monday his ship had found what was believed to be the tail - a key find since that section of the aircraft houses the cockpit voice and flight data recorders - but Soelistyo said that could not be confirmed. Only 37 bodies of the mostly Indonesian passengers and crew have been recovered. Many more could still be trapped in the fuselage of the aircraft. The crash was the first fatal accident suffered by the AirAsia budget group, whose Indonesian affiliate has come under criticism from the authorities in Jakarta since the disaster. The transport ministry has sus-

While the cause of the crash is not known, the national weather bureau has said the seasonal tropical storms common in the area were likely to be a factor. DETROIT — Confident in the economy and cheered by cheap gas, Americans are likely to push new car sales to their highest level in a decade this year. Analysts expect sales to reach 17 million for the first time since 2005. That’s close to the record of 17.3 million set in 2000. Low gas prices are giving buyers more confidence, whether they’re buying their first subcompact or upgrading to a larger SUV. Gas prices started this year at an average of $2.23 per gallon, down 33 percent from the beginning of 2014, according to AAA. The Energy Department estimates that lower gasoline prices will save U.S. households $550 this year — about four months of lease payments on a 2014 Honda Civic. Popular new vehicles, like the Jeep Cherokee and Subaru Outback, are also drawing buyers. Sales have now grown for five consecutive years — a rarity in the volatile auto industry. While sales are growing, the pace has slowed from double-digit
increases in 2011 and 2012. That’s good news for buyers, who can expect to see bigger discounts in competitive segments like midsize cars as automakers fight to steal sales from each other. Alec Gutierrez, an analyst with the car buying site Kelley Blue Book, thinks sales could stay in the 17-million range for the next two or three years if interest rates stay low and the U.S. economy remains healthy. December, with its holiday discounts and warmer-than-usual weather, brought buyers out in droves, with sales up 11 percent over the previous year. Automakers reported December and full-year sales Monday. For all of 2014, sales were up 6 percent to 16.5 million vehicles, according to Autodata Corp. That was the biggest year for the industry since 2006.
Back then — as now — the Ford F-Series was the country’s best-selling vehicle and the midsize Toyota Camry was the best-selling car. The top-selling SUV was the Ford Explorer, but it was only No. 14 among all vehicles sold, according to Ward’s AutoInfoBank. In 2014 two smaller SUVs — the Honda CR-V and the Ford Escape — cracked the top 10 in sales as customers turned away from small and midsize cars as car-like handling and low gas prices made such vehicles more appealing. Toyota, Fiat Chrysler and General Motors all reported 2014 sales increases, and Nissan, Subaru, Hyundai and Honda reported record numbers for the year. SINGAPORE - Oil prices recovered slightly in Asia Tuesday after the US contract fell below the psychological $50 mark in New York on demand worries, a strong dollar and a global supply glut. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for February, the US benchmark, rose nine cents to $50.13 in afternoon trade. Brent crude rose for February rose 22 cents to $53.33. WTI fell as low as $49.95 -- a level not seen since May 2009 -Monday before closing at $50.04, down $2.65 from Friday. Brent fell $3.31 to $53.11. “The price rebound (in Asia) is likely to be provisional as traders anticipate short-term moves in the oil market in this blow-off phase,” Michael McCarthy, chief market strategist at CMC Markets in Sydney, told AFP. Monday’s slide followed indications of rising output from key producers Russia and Iraq at a time when forecasters have trimmed their demand projections due to weak global economic growth. A long rally in the greenback, which gained 11 percent last year against a
basket of major currencies, has also weighed on the dollar-priced oil market by making crude more expensive for buyers using weaker units. Analysts are warning of further losses to come for the black gold. Oil has dropped about 50 percent since June on worries about weak demand and a decision by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries not to cut output in response to lower prices and higher supplies. Monday’s heavy losses are a reminder to the market “that oil fundamentals have not changed just because we entered into the New Year,” said Daniel Ang, investment analyst at Phillip Futures in Singapore. “To further exacerbate the problem, a New Year means a new slate for oil bears and with them coming back to the market, this pushes the prices down further,” he said. TOKYO - Toyota will give away thousands of patents for its fuel-cell cars, it said Tuesday, in an effort to encourage other automakers into the new industry. The world’s largest vehicle maker said it will allow royalty-free use of about 5,680 patent licences, including 1,970 related to fuel-cell stacks and 3,350 concerning fuel-cell system control technology. The firm also said the free patent licences will include about 290 items related to high-pressure hydrogen tanks. The cost-free licences will be allowed “through the initial market introduction period” of fuel cell vehicles (FCV), which the company expects to last until about 2020. Toyota will also open about 70 patent licences related to hydrogen stations -- the equivalent of gas stands for internal combustion vehicles, and a vital link in the chain for drivers -- indefinitely for manufacturers and operators. “By allowing royalty-free use of FCV-related patent licences, Toyota is going one step further as it aims to promote the widespread use of FCVs and actively contribute to the realisation of a hydrogen-based society,” the
automaker said in a statement. The announcement came after Toyota last month rolled out the world’s first mass market fuel-cell car -- the four-door Mirai sedan -- in Japan. The car -- whose name means “future” in Japanese -- will hit the US and some European countries, including Britain, Germany and Denmark, in 2015, Toyota has said. It hopes to sell more than 3,000 units of the car by the end of 2017 in the United States, and up to 100 annually in Europe. Fuel-cell cars are seen as the Holy Grail of green cars as they are powered by a chemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen, which produces nothing more harmful than water at the point of use. But a limited driving range and lack of refuelling stations have hampered development of fuel-cell and their cousin, all-electric cars, which environmentalists say could play a vital role in cutting greenhouse gas emissions and slowing global warming. The Mirai can travel about 650 kilometres (400 miles) without refuelling, some three times further than an electric car, and its tank can be filled in a few minutes like gasoline engine vehicles, according to Toyota. Kapal village. However, once upon a time the Kapal village was found in famine condition, where people had no food and it led to chaos and pathetic condition. Ki Kebo Iwa eventually invoked an instruction to the Creator by meditation at the Purusadha Temple. In his meditation, he got a revelation from Hyang Pasupati instructing the local residents to implement the Aci Rah Pengangon or Aci Rare Angon by presenting tipat-bantal. Both offerings served as the symbol of the source of life because the cause of the famine was in the absence of the source of life. Since then, the ritual was routinely implemented where people gathered in front of the Desa Temple of Kapal village. Local people then divided themselves into two groups, each of which held tipat and bantal as weapon. Baleganjur gamelan music and the sound of kulkul or wooden split drum accompanied the war. After an instruction from local village apparatus, both groups then attacked each other by throwing the
tipat-bantal. At the beginning, the war took place in the middle courtyard of the temple and then it was resumed to outer courtyard, highway of Kapal village. The tipat or bantal was just like a bullet dashing so quickly. People who became throwers were trance-like and striking blindly. Even, many of them were topless, but still put on customary clothing such as headband, fabrics and selempot. Although having to throw in one direction, namely northward and southward, some ignorantly threw towards people who witnessed the war tradition. However, they were all excited and happy. Interestingly, despite attacking and throwing each other with tipat and bantal, none would get wound or injury. Even, they vivaciously expressed more laughter. The war lasted for about 30 minutes and then ended with a mutually shaking hands and forgiving. All the residents then cleared the path from the remnants of the tipat and bantal.
Residents were also advised to take some pieces of the tipat and bantal to take home, and then spread in the moors and paddy fields. Chief of Kapal customary village, Anak Agung Gede Dharmayasa, said that taking some pieces of tipat and bantal to the home symbolized a request that all residents could still be bestowed with the abundance of fertility, food and welfare. “This is a form of respect for the universal energy creating the life and a procession to preserve the life survival with the concept of keeping the motherland, as the land is a tangible manifestation of the giver and sustainer of life for every creature on this earth,” he said. Kapal village, he explained, had a total of 2,247 families spreading across 18 customary hamlets. For this event, each family was required to submit 1 kg of rice or sticky rice. From this submission, the village could collect at least 1,800 kg or 1.8 tons of tipat and bantal. “It is also in part because some are not coming,” he added. (kmb)

This tradition is regularly held every year in Sasih Kapat, around September to October. This tradition is closely related to farming life of Kapal village implemented as an expression of gratitude to God for the abundant harvest at the village. The implementation is centered at Desa and Puseh Temple. Tipat (diamond-shaped rice bag) is interpreted as a symbol of feminine energy (pradhana) and bantal
(Balinese long glutinous cake) as a symbol of masculine energy (purusha) represented by the presence of mother earth or the earth in physical form as the soil. The resulted food is the main weapon to defend the life itself. The tipat-bantal war tradition this year became more unique since it was collaborated with the art composition. A dance drama composition choreographed by Anak Agung Gede Rahma Putra was presented with the storyline about the origin of the war. The composition presented Baris Bantal and Rejang Tipat Dance by teen artists. Its musical accompaniment used selonding gamelan set so that it gave a regal and classical impression. The composition told about the arrival of Ki Kebo Iwa on the assignment of the King of Bali, Asta Sura Ratna Bhumi Banten to repair the Purusadha Temple at

BANGLI – The high volume of plastic waste generated by Bangli County and managed by waste bank groups is not coalesced into a waste bank communication forum. It is very much the hope of group head of the Dywik Waste Bank at Taman Bali village of Bangli, I Wayan Sutirka, that such a forum will be created. According to Sutirka, the creation of a forum, would allow people who care about plastic waste to share their knowledge with each other, including those aspects related to waste management. “We hope to get the attention of the government in order to establish a communication forum for waste banks,” he said on Monday (Jan 5). So far, there is only one waste bank in Bangli County, which can nowhere near handle to volume of waste produced. According to Sutirka, the amount of plastic waste generated in the area and which, could be collected by his waste bank, comes out to about 55,588 kg. This figure includes waste from all subdistricts in Bangli. Every month, the plastic waste generated amounts to some 4,000 to 7,000 kg. Such a high volume of plastic waste has urged him to think creatively about how to resolve the existing problems both regarding the selling price and product marketing. For this reason the presence of a communication forum is necessary. The government should not only focus in terms of waste collection,
but should also encourage the emergence of creative ideas from other waste banks that could be gathered in the context of a forum. He added that creation of such a communication forum was more important than the addition of more waste banks. According to him, existing waste banks already cover many sub-units so this is not a problem in itself. “The number of waste banks is not the problem, rather communication between the different counties is what is still less than optimal, thus the importance of creating a communication forum” he added. So far, communication related to plastic waste management is only taking place amongst the housewife organization (PKK) and schools in Bangli. Regarding the amount of plastic waste, the Control Subdivision Head of the Bangli Environment Agency, Gusti Laksana said “Exisitng junk banks have been handling the plastic waste”. Laksana, added that “before the presence of waste banks, the Environment Agency used to collect the waste and transport it to landfills. Now it is different, the Environment Agency just coordinates with the waste banks in terms of waste collection. “In the past, we went directly to schools to collect plastic waste. Now, we just need to coordinate with waste banks where people bring their plastic” said Laksana. (sos)

US senator urges changes to avoid repeat of CIA torture WASHINGTON — The outgoing chairman of the Senate intelligence committee is urging a series of policy and legislative changes to ensure that the U.S. government never again tortures detainees, even as polls show that a majority of Americans believe harsh CIA interrogations after Sept. 1, 2001 attacks against the U.S. were justified. Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein presided over a five-year investigation that resulted in last month’s release of parts of a report that harshly described the CIA practice of torture against terror detainees after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. The 525-page executive summary cited the CIA’s own documents in finding that the agency’s interrogation program was more brutal than previously understood and failed to produce unique intelligence that couldn’t have been obtained through traditional methods. President Barack Obama has called the practices torture, something former CIA officials dispute. The executive summary of the Senate report, written by Feinstein staff members, documents CIA mismanagement and misrepresentations, some of which the agency has acknowledged. In a letter to Obama released Monday, Feinstein outlined a series of recommendations “intended to make sure that the United States
never again engages in actions that you have acknowledged were torture.” The documented shortcomings in the CIA’s decade-old interrogation program “should prompt additional oversight and better sharing of information for all covert action and significant intelligence collection programs,” she said. Feinstein said she will introduce legislation in the upcoming Congress to codify Obama’s executive order banning torture and prohibiting the CIA from detaining prisoners. Her office said she introduced similar legislation in 2009, but then began to focus on the investigation and wanted to wait for its outcome before pressing for changes. “We didn’t know then that the study would not be completed until the end of 2014, so we went down the track of the investigation with the idea that recommendations would follow from what we found,” her top intelligence aide, David Grannis, said in an email. Feinstein also called for a series of policy changes designed to force the CIA to better manage its covert actions and more fully inform Congress about them. And she urged new rules to ensure better accountability at the CIA, an agency where managerial and operational negligence has often gone unpunished. (ap)
Cosby is the only defendant in the lawsuit, originally filed last month by Tamara Green, who said he drugged and assaulted her in the 1970s. The two new plaintiffs are Therese Serignese, who said he drugged and raped her in 1976, and Linda Traitz, who alleges he tried to drug her and then sexually groped her in 1970. Attorney Joseph Cammarata, who represents the three women, said the civil action allows them to have their allegations heard since criminal statutes of limitation have expired. “The lawsuit provides an opportunity for women who claim to have been harmed to have their day in court in a forum where the truth can be tried,” he said. Cosby’s publicist David Brokaw and lawyer Martin Singer did not immediately respond to requests
for comment Monday. Singer has said he expected to prevail in the original lawsuit. Green first spoke publicly about her allegations in 2005. She said in the lawsuit that after she did media interviews Brokaw and Cosby’s lawyer Walter M. Phillips Jr. made statements intended to expose her to public contempt and ridicule. Phillips said last month he represented Cosby in 2005 but no longer does, and he declined to comment further. Brokaw did not return messages then seeking comment on Green’s allegations. Serignese and Traitz, who are from Florida, allege in the amended complaint that when they came forward separately last November, Singer issued responses for Cosby that said they and other accusers were lying. Since November, at least 15
women have come forward with claims Cosby sexually assaulted them decades ago. Most of the women say he drugged them before he assaulted them. Cosby, who starred as Dr. Cliff Huxtable on “The Cosby Show” from 1984 to 1992, has never been charged in connection with any of the allegations, and through his representatives he has denied them. A 2005 lawsuit by a Pennsylvania woman was settled before it went to trial. Smart gadgets take center stage at CES LAS VEGAS — Imagine a world in which your garage door opens automatically as you pull into the driveway. The living room lights and heater turn on — perhaps the oven starts warming up, too. In the so-called “smart home,” cars, appliances and other devices all have sensors and Internet connectivity to think and act for themselves, and make your life easier. We’re not there just yet, but we’re getting closer. The smart-home concept is known in tech circles as the Internet of Things. Current iterations primarily include our ability to control gadgets such as lights and security alarms or view data remotely through a smartphone app. At the International CES gadget show in Las Vegas this week, manufacturers will promote more devices and functionality. Some gadgets will be able to talk directly with one another, not just to an app. The four-day show opens to the public Tuesday. The Internet of Things could mean big business for gadget makers. The Consumer Electronics Association projects U.S. sales of smart energy and security systems alone will total $574 million this year, a 23 percent increase from 2014. Although that pales by comparison to the $18 billion spent on TVs and displays, growth has been swift. In terms of people smartening up their homes in earnest, though, it will probably be another two years before devices are cheap and widespread enough for the typical consumer, says Eduardo Pinheiro, CEO of Muzzley, which makes a hub that allows devices to talk to each other.
For now, the smart home is more about possibilities than practice. Many companies exhibiting at CES are laying the foundation for what a smart-home system will eventually do, hoping to entice consumers to start thinking about upgrading to smart gadgets. It’s not always an easy sell. Consider wearable devices that track fitness and other activities. In many cases, the novelty wears off quickly, and devices end up in drawers. But what if a wearable device that tracks sleep could tell the coffeemaker to start brewing as soon as you awoke? When the coffee’s done, what if the sprinklers on the front lawn automatically turned off so you didn’t get wet walking out the front door to work? “It’s these great benefits that we need to explain,” says BK Yoon, Samsung’s CEO and chief of consumer electronics. “We can’t just talk about the Internet of Things because it’s so impersonal like a bedtime story for robots. After the price hike, the average selling price of blue canister LPG at sales agency became IDR 11,225 per kg or IDR 134,700 per canister from the previous price of an average of IDR 125,000 per canister. “Now, more buyers are looking for the 3-kg LPG, although it is sold for IDR 20,000 per canister. They are persistently looking for the 3-kg instead of the 12-kg canister,” said Nengah Nasih, an LPG retailer in Denpasar, Monday (Jan 5). As a natural and convenient harbor for skippers, this largest harbor in Buleleng has become favorite sojourn for barges which often transport goods to various towns in Bali. The Head of Buleleng Development Planning Board (Bappeda), Gede Suyasa, said that designation of Celukan Bawang Harbor was very appropriate for barges and cruise ships to anchor in Bali. It was enabled because the construction of Celukan Bawang Harbor was natural without too big ocean waves. “According to provincial Spatial Plan, it should become the center of all stevedoring activities in Bali. Based on the experience of skippers, Celukan Bawang Harbor is the most convenient harbor for cruise ship to berth. As a natural harbor, the waves are not high and surrounding condition is very good as well,” he said, Monday (Jan 5). When the freight was unloaded at Celukan Bawang Harbor, the condition of road construction would become a
constraint for trucks transporting the freight. “Regent of Buleleng has often delivered the issue to provincial government if the Celukan Bawang Harbor is indeed used as stevedoring harbor it must be focused on stevedoring activity. However, there was complaint of employers where if the freight is unloaded in Buleleng, when it is transported to southern Bali, the road access is even not good as it can kindle congestion at Gitgit,” he said. Cooperation between Bali and Buleleng government to maximize the role of Celukan Bawang Harbor remained to be done as well as in the matter of road access posing the main supporting infrastructure for smooth distribution of freight. “When freight is just unloaded at the harbor, there should be an access to distribute the freight. Unlike when stevedoring activities are done at Benoa Harbor Denpasar, the access of distribution can be smoother. Thus, the road access becomes a very important part,” said Suyasa. Meanwhile, according to Dewa Gede Adi Kumarajaya, General Manager of PT Pelindo III of Celukan Bawang Branch, if the Benoa Harbor
was merely intended for tourism vessel, the entire container ships would be directed to Celukan Bawang as set forth in the master plan of Celukan Bawang Harbor. “The role of Celukan Bawang Harbor will be developed in the future into a cargo harbor. It will depend on the status of Benoa Harbor whether it has become a special tourism harbor. As a result, cargo ships will certainly be directed to the North,” he said. Stevedoring activities at Celukan Bawang covered the

Due to bad weather, boat crossing closed

Dozens of billboards dismantled by force AMLAPURA - Dozens of billboards and banners in the town of Amlapura, were dismantled by Municipal Police on Monday (Jan 5), because the permits for posting them had expired. Some of the billboards had been installed in restricted areas that could compromise people’s mobility. The dismantling of the billboards and banners was also meant to clean up the town and reduce the slum like impression that the billboards created. Chief of the Karangasem Municipal Police, Iwan Suparta, revealed that at least 50 billboards and banners were already dismantled on the road between Amlapura and Jasri. The general cleanup was carried out at this particular moment, given that many of the signs were holyday greetings for Galungan, Kuningan and New Years. Aside from the billboards posted by organizations, the ones posted by the regent and deputy regent of Karangasem were also dismantled. Before dismantling, Suparta claimed to have sent a warning letter to those who had posted the billboards, asking them to take down their signs. On Monday, the police
took down any remaining signs. “We have kept all the dismantled billboards in the office of the Karangasem Municipal Police. The owners are welcome to collect their property from the office,” he said. To take down all the billboards, a total of 18 personnel from the Karangasem Municipal Police were deployed and divided into two teams. Iwan Suparta admitted that most of the billboards were mounted on roadside and pegged onto trees. “In accordance with the rules of billboard installation on roadsides, it is forbidden to peg signs to trees,” he explained. In 2015, his party would further tighten the regulations on the
installation of billboards and banners in Amlapura. Poorly organized billboard installations, according to Iwan Suparta, gives a slum-like impression to the town of Karangasem. For this reason, his party has appealed to community leaders and organizations to coordinate in advance with the Municipal Police of Karangasem prior to installing such signs. Any billboards or banners installed in restricted areas would immediately issue a letter of reprimand. “We try to persuade people to dismantle illegal signs themselves, but failing this officers demolish the signs by force,” he concluded. AMLAPURA - For the safety of passengers, the boat crossing from Padangbai Harbor to Gili Trawangan tourist attraction, Lombok, NTB, was closed. Strong winds in the Straits of Lombok were followed by high waves reaching 1 to 3 meters caused the boat crossing to be crossing be unsafe. When the weather returns to normal, the crossing will be opened again. Harbor administrator of Padangbai, Ketut Aryadana, revealed that a number of boats that usually serve the PadangbaiLombok crossing had to be postponed due to unfavorable weather condition. “The crossing was postponed today (Monday) due to bad weather” he said. Moreover, the possibility of high waves occurs due to erratic weather conditions. Bad weather would not affect large-sized vessels because the wave height limit was still around 1 to 3 meters. Crossing service on the Padangbai-Lembar was not disturbed and could still be in operation. “The crossing remains normal and is going well. We do not need to apply the open-close system here,” he explained. Ketut Aryadana ensured that the boat crossing services would be reopend when the weather was back to normal. However, his party could not ascertain when the weather would go back to normal. “If tomorrow (Tuesday) the weather is fine, we will be in operation. But if the waves unexpectedly go higher, we will have to delay the crossing by applying the open-close system,” he concluded. (kmb)
Landslide in Pupuan, traffic hampered by materials
TABANAN - Landslides occurred again in Tabanan County. After having previously occurred in Penebel subdistrict, on Sunday night (Jan 4) another landslide occurred in Pupuan subdistrict, on the highway at Batungsel Kelod hamlet, Pupuan. Fortunately, the incident did not claim any casualties. However, the 30 meter high landslide with a diameter of 50 meters, caused the traffic of Pupuan-Antosari-Singaraja to be disrupted by landslide debri that covered half the road. Subdistrict head of Pupuan, Putu Arya Suta, said that landslide occurred around 8:15 p.m. That night the Pupuan area was flushed out by heavy rain all day. “Fortunately the road was quite, whereas usually many vehicles pass through the area where the landslide occurred,” he said, Monday (Jan 5). Upon receiving the report of a landslide, his party promptly contacted relevant parties, namely the Tabanan Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) and the officials of the province to deal with the materials covering the provincial road. “That night officers removed the landslide debris with heavy equipment from the Bali Public Works Agency,” he explained. As the evacuation process took place, the road connecting Pupuan to Singaraja only had one lane open, large enough for small vehicles. Heavy trucks had to stop temporarily as the road could not handle such loads. “This morning (Monday) the road is back to normal. Meanwhile, the remaining landslide materials continue to be cleaned up so that they will not spread to road again when it rains.” he concluded. (kmb28)

There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

One of New Jersey’s “Real Housewives” has gone to prison. Teresa Giudice surrendered at the Federal Correction Institution in Connecticut at about 3 a.m. Monday to begin serving a 15-month sentence for bankruptcy fraud, her attorney said. Giudice’s last meal before turning herself in was at a 24-hour diner near the facility, according to attorney James Leonard, who drove the “Real Housewives of New Jersey” star from her home in northern New Jersey to the prison, about 90 minutes north of New York City. Giudice and her husband, Giuseppe “Joe” Giudice, pleaded guilty last year to hiding assets from bankruptcy creditors and submitting phony loan applications to get some $5 million in mortgages and construction loans. Joe Giudice also pleaded guilty to failing to pay taxes totaling more than $200,000. Under terms of their plea agreements, Joe Giudice will start serving his 41-month sentence when Teresa Giudice is released, an arrangement aimed at ensuring the couple’s four daughters will have one parent at home at all times. Joe Giudice, born in Italy, is not an American citizen and faces an immigration hearing when he completes his sentence and is expected to be deported. His attorney has said Giudice came to the U.S. as an infant and didn’t know he wasn’t an American citizen until he was an adult. Attorneys said that under federal sentencing rules, Teresa Giudice could be eligible to be released by next December, and also could spend the last month or so of her sentence at a halfway house or under some form of home monitoring. The Giudices also are required to pay $414,000 in restitution under their plea agreement; Teresa Giudice sent the government a check for $200,000 in early October, according to court records. At the Giudices’ sentencing in October, U.S. District Judge Esther Salas criticized the couple for not disclosing all their assets as required under their plea agreement, calling it “the same pattern of obstruction, concealment and manipulation as they showed in the bankruptcy case.” Still, Salas sentenced Teresa Giudice to a sentence below the range sought by the U.S. attorney’s office and staggered her sentence with her husband’s so they wouldn’t be in prison at the same time and unable to care for their four daughters. Joe Giudice also pleaded guilty in state court in October to unlawful use of identification in a case involving a bogus driver’s license. His 18-month sentence will run concurrent with his federal sentence. (ap)
