LOS ANGELES - Rising Hollywood star Shailene Woodley -- the face of “Divergent” and “The Fault in Our Stars” -- topped big-screen nominations for the People’s Choice awards announced Tuesday with four nods. Brad Pitt, Robert Downey Jr, Angelina Jolie and Scarlett Johansson were among those shortlisted in the favorite movie actor and actress categories. On the music front, British soul sensation Sam Smith dominated with four nominations for the awards, which will be given out in Los Angeles on January 7. Woodley -- whose turn in “Divergent” echoed Jennifer Lawrence’s star-making role in the “Hunger Games” films -- scored nods for favorite movie duo both in “Divergent” and “The Fault in Our Stars,” as well as favorite action movie actress and favorite dramatic movie actress. For favorite movie, the nominees are “22 Jump Street,” “Captain America: The Winter

LOS ANGELES - As Americans went to the polls for mid-term elections Tuesday, Angelina Jolie revealed that she is open to a possible role in politics, diplomacy or public service. The A-list star, who is already known for her humanitarian work on various causes, wondered aloud whether she would better achieve her aims as an actress or in another role. “When you work as a humanitarian, you are conscious that politics have to be considered,” she told Vanity Fair in a cover story. “Because if you really want to make an extreme change, then you have a responsibility,” she added, before saying: “But I honestly don’t know in what role I would be more useful -- I am conscious of what I do for a living, and that (could) make it less possible.”

Asked directly if she could pursue a life in politics, diplomacy or public service, she replied: “I am open.” She gave no more details. Since 2012 Jolie has traveled on more than 40 missions around the world as a special envoy for the United Nations Refugee Agency. Last year Jolie was awarded an honorary Oscar for her humanitarian work. Last month the star of such Hollywood films as “Tomb Raider” and “Maleficent” was made an honorary dame for her work combatting sexual violence. They carried many kinds of performance done in front of Governor Office in Renon such as giant puppet of rat. The members of ForBali gave their opinions in front of the office. They stated that the reclamation is not beneficially for the people. “Let’s fight injustice. Don’t let bad investors pile up Bali. The

Evidently the dry season of the last few months is benefiting the majority of small businesses in the Klungkung region. One such business is the snakefruit and jackfruit toffee maker at Kawan hamlet, Besan village, Dawan. Minimal rainfall actually facilitates the toffee production at the local village. The jackfruit and snakefruit toffee makers at Besan village are even having trouble producing enough toffee, as the demand for toffee has begun to soar for the past month. and processed into toffee. Once cooked, all the toffee ingredients were then dried in the sun. The drying process is admittedly quite long. But with the current drought conditions, the drying process runs for about six days. “During rainy season, it usually takes longer, and the results are not as good with risk of molding,” said Pure. The water crisis hitting residents in the barren regions of Karangasem is getting more severe. Residents purchasing water are forced to stand in line. According to one of the local residents, Komang Suparta, Monday (Nov 3), his family had ordered water but after five days no water had come. Suparta from the southeast foot of Mount Agung said that his village had four towers whose water was worth IDR 150,000 was transported there by truck.. Another Butus resident, Nyoman Pasar, said that he purchased water IDR 140,000 worth of water for four towers. “For other people living at a greater distance and in difficult terrain, the price of water is higher. At Nangka hamlet or Kemoning hamlet, the price of water reaches IDR 250,000 per four towers,” he said. The water seller serving the residents at Butus, Tanah Aron, Nangka and the surrounding residents, is from Umanyar. This clean water seller offered cheaper prices. Lately, however prices increased, to to the payment of levies to the village of Abai. Residents at Tanah Aron, Nangka, Kemoning, Butus and surrounding areas have been afflicted

by this severe water crisis. Nengah Pasar said that the two geo membrane dam projects at Tanah Aron and Nangka have dried out. The water supply was not sufficient for the purposes of Nangka residents, let alone for residents at other hamlet. A resident of Umanyar, Ababi village, Abang subdistrict, Nyoman Ngantik, said last Tuesday that the water supply through pipelines to his village had not been running for three days. He did not know the cause, whether there might be something clogging the water flow. Suparta hoped the Telaga Waja water pipeline project would also be able to distribute water to residents of Butus. So far, the region besieged by the quarry activities did not show any indication of being about to get clean water through the pipeline project. Actually, the residents at Butus village and the villages upland from there, regularly face water crisis during the dry season. Some plants in the fields of Butus such as coffee have already wilted. THE interest of people from Jembrana to participate in the resettlement program remains quite high. Unfortunately, the quota of family to be moved has decreases when compared to that of previous years. Besides this, the destination of resettlement programs is also different from lastyear. This destination is new for residents of Jembrana. Last year a total of 24 families were sent to Watutau village, Piore Lore subdistrict, Poso County, Central Sulawesi. At the resettlement destination, each family is given two hectares of land that can be used for cultivation and residential land. “Actually the location is quite strategic, supported by road access. Spreading breast cancer awareness and fund raising

NUSA DUA - Bali Pink Ribbon Foundation (BPR) proudly held the annual charity Bali Pink Ribbon walk on October 25, 2014. The event took the place at BTDC area Nusa Dua. The route of Bali Pink Ribbon Walk was set in the stunning grounds of the BTDC area in Nusa Dua (The Opposite Bali Collection Complex). The route is set along the beautiful manicured gardens of Nusa Dua and along the beach looping back to the main area where the festive began. To support the program, the event is welcoming the participants from Indonesia and other countries of all levels of fitness to join the 5 km Bali Pink Ribbon Walk. The registration ticket is IDR 150 K per person which includes a walk t-shirt. Children up to 14 years old is IDR 75 K per person. By special invitation, local school students walked for free. Head of Yayasan Kanker Indonesia (YKI) Badung branch Ratna Gde Agung was also attended and joined the walk with other participants. By joining the Bali Pink Ribbon walk, the participants spread up the breast cancer awareness to other people they met after the event. Bali Pink Ribbon is gaining extensive recognition in the public eye with the good work that they are doing our in their education and screening programs. According to Pink Ribbon Foundation founder Gaye Warren, this year’s event aims to raise funds to purchase a mobile breast screening bus. It will be used mobile to reach more villages in remote areas in Bali. “We need to raise fund to purchase the mobile USG unit and the minibus to transport the patients from their home to the medical center. Meanwhile, we plan to have to radiologists and raise more funds to train them to operate the USG machine,” Warren said.

The Kids Activity Area promises a load of fun with Carnival games such as apple bobbing, Popcorn, fairy floss, face painting, paint your own pink ribbon t-shirt, and bouncy castle. More than 950 participants joined the walk.

BPR is a volunteer organization working with Indonesian and Singaporean doctors that provides seminars on breast cancer to women across Bali, in companies and villages, providing valuable knowledge and understanding of breast health. The foundation can also arrange for breast screening as it strongly believes that early detection of any changes in breast health saves lives. BPR also has a support center on Jl. Dewi Sri, Kuta, providing a safe place for women to share their experiences of breast cancer with other survivors and those undergoing treatment. Bimonthly survivor meetings and seminars are held at the center, where information on living with and treating breast cancer is available in Indonesian and English.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Scientists see mechanism for spontaneous HIV ‘cure’ Agence France-Press

PARIS - French scientists said Tuesday they had found the genetic mechanism by which two HIV-infected men may have experienced a “spontaneous cure”, and said it offered a new strategy in the fight against AIDS. Both men were infected by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), one of them 30 years ago, but never developed AIDS symptoms. The AIDS-causing virus remained in their immune cells but was inactivated because its genetic code had been altered, the scientists said. The change appeared to be linked to increased activity of a common enzyme named APOBEC, they theorised. The “apparent spontaneous cure” throws up an intriguing avenue for drug engineers, the team said in a statement. “The work opens up therapeutic avenues for a cure, using or stimulating this enzyme, and avenues for identifying individu-

The researchers suggested spontaneous evolution between humans and the virus, a process called “endogenisation” that is believed to have neutralised other viruses in humans in the past. Hundreds of large trucks are still stuck on Jalan Bypass Prof. IB Mantra, Sunday (Nov 2). The incident occured following the overcrowding at Padangbai Harbor caused by damage to Pier I. Truck drivers looked very distraught because they have been stuck there for the past five days. One of the drivers, Abdullah, claimed on Sunday that he was resigned to the situation. He claimed to have been stuck since Friday (Oct 31) yet even by Sunday had still not has his turn to cross to Lembar Harbor, Lombok. He is wanting to transport motor vehicles to Lembar. Another experience was told by Sukri, a driver who transports foodstuff and other crops, from Java to Bali and wished to resume his journey to Lombok. He admitted to have resigned himself to the situation. He worried that his freight would rot on the truck. “If I cannot depart tomorrow, I am afraid the entire freight will rot,” said the driver who transports fruits from Java. Meanwhile, another truck driver brought crops such as onions, garlic and tomatoes. He also worries that his freight will rot in the

middle of the journey before he has time to cross. Faced with such a situation, hundreds of drivers were forced to overnight on the median of the bypass road with only a piece of cloth as a bed. Other drivers used the front seat of their trucks to sleep. They hope to get the opportunity to cross. Otherwise, they would suffer great losses. Chief of Dawan Police, Ketut Suastika, said that for traffic to run smoothly along the KlungkungKarangasem road section, hundreds of trucks were forced to be held in three locations. These include the parking lot of Padangbai Harbor, a stopover at Yeh Malet Karangasem and Jalan Bypass Kusamba. ties provided. Satwika did not deny the conditions at the market, where many other traders lined up to sell in the shanties that were rejected by textile traders. In the future, his party plans to take decisive action by dismantling the shanties along the roadside around the market. “We are proposing this area to be used as a night market and trust that it will be more effective. If they are still unused, we will immediately dismantle them,” he said. Textile traders who do not occupy the temporary market provided by the PD Pasar Buleleng would just lose their registration rights in the temporary market. After an investigation, the officers discovered the culprit to be a commercial sex workers, suspect Faizatun Naimah aka Ela, 25, from Situbondo, East Java. “Sometimes the suspect hangs out at Lumintang and Padanggalak. So, she is not settled in one location, fo rthis reason she reffers to herself a freelance prostitute. We arrested the suspect several hours after the incident,” said Chief of the East Denpasar Criminal Investigation Unit, Donny Bayuanggoro, Monday (Nov 3). zen with the initials AS, who saw the woman described as short and plump, pushing a motorcycle away form the scene of the crime. The officers looked for the motorcycle taxi rider and, at Biaung, Kertalangu, Denpasar, found one with the initials IK. Then, IK told the officers that the woman was known as Ela. The motorcycle taxi rider had met her at Padanggalak complex and was asked to transport her to the boarding house on Jalan Sulatri Gang XI, Denpasar. After that, he was told to drive her to Lumintang, West Denpasar. Based on the information oobtained from IK, police searched for the suspect at the Lumintang complex. Amnesty: Israel committed war crimes in Gaza war

JERUSALEM — Amnesty International on Wednesday accused Israel of committing war crimes during the war in the Gaza Strip this summer, saying it displayed “callous indifference” in attacks on family homes in the densely populated coastal area. The Gaza war left more than 2,100 Palestinians dead, including many civilians according to Palestinian and U.N. officials. Israel says the number of militants killed was much higher and accuses Hamas of using civilians as human shields. On the Israeli side, 66 soldiers and six civilians were killed. Amnesty said in a report released Wednesday that “Israeli forces killed scores of Palestinian civilians in attacks targeting houses full of families, which in some cases have amounted to war crimes.” Israel’s foreign ministry rejected the report’s findings, saying the London-based rights group “ignores documented war crimes perpetrated by Hamas.” “The report does not mention the word terror in relation to Hamas or other armed Palestinian groups, nor mentions tunnels built by Hamas to infiltrate Israel and perpetrate terror attacks,” the ministry said. Israel launched the Gaza operation in early July in response to steppedup rocket attacks on Israeli cities by the coastal area’s militant Palestinian Hamas rulers. The operation followed a crackdown by Israeli forces in the West Bank, where troops arrested scores of Hamas members, in response to the kidnapping and killings of three teenage Israelis in June by Hamas operatives. Several weeks later, Jewish extremists kidnapped and burned to death a Palestinian teenager in east Jerusalem in an apparent revenge attack. But the summer war was the fiercest con-

flict between the two sides in years. “Israeli forces have brazenly flouted the laws of war by carrying out a series of attacks on civilian homes, displaying callous indifference to the carnage caused,” said Philip Luther, Director of Amnesty’s Middle East and North Africa program. During the 50 days of fighting, Hamas fired thousands of rockets and mortars at Israeli towns and cities, including Tel Aviv, and used a sophisticated tunnel network to carry out attacks on Israeli military encampments in southern Israel, close to the Gaza border. Some of the tunnels also had exits abutting Israeli civilian communities, giving Hamas the ability to attack them as well. For its part, Israeli forces carried out sustained aerial, artillery and infantry attacks in Gaza, many of which the Amnesty report found to be indiscriminate. Israel says the military was as careful as possible to avoid civilian casualties citing its system of providing warning to civilians that strikes on their buildings were coming when possible. It argues that the heavy civilian death toll is Hamas’ fault, accusing the Islamic militant group of launching rockets — and drawing retaliation — from school yards, residential areas and mosques. “The report exposes a pattern of attacks on civilian homes by Israeli forces which have shown a shocking disregard for the lives of Palestinian civilians, who were given no warning and had no chance to flee,” Luther said.

WASHINGTON — Republicans held a commanding edge in elections for the House of Representatives on Tuesday, capitalizing on dissatisfaction with President Barack Obama and national malaise to push their majority toward the highest level in 65 years. The Republicans had won more than 190 seats as polls closed in the East and Midwest and were certain to surpass the 218 needed for a majority if incumbents prevailed as expected in the West. They knocked out Democratic incumbents in Georgia, West Virginia, Illinois, New York and Florida and claimed two open seats in New York and North Carolina. With Republicans also gaining the majority in the Senate, Obama now faces an opposition-led Congress during his last two years in office. The president’s party typically loses seats in the elections between presidential ones, but Obama’s low approval ratings around 40 percent have been a drag on fellow Democrats, along with public unease with the Islamic State group threat, the Ebola outbreak and a lackluster recovery from the 2008 recession. Republicans tightened their grip on the South. Evan Jenkins, a Democrat-turned-Republican state senator in West Virginia, knocked out 19-term Rep. Nick Rahall, one of the last white Democrats representing the region. Republican Rick Allen prevailed over another Southern Democrat, five-term Rep. John

The Republicans, who came into Tuesday election holding 234 seats, were likely to match the 246 House seats of 1947-1949 when another Democrat, Harry S. Truman, occupied the White House. Democrats still hold the modern-day edge for most seats — 292 — in 1979. A solid Republican majority means Speaker John Boehner, who was on the ballot for a 13th term, can afford defections from his increasingly conservative caucus and still get legislation passed. Boehner raised $102 million to ensure that Republicans would tighten their grip on the House. Obama, whose party lost 63 seats in 2010, would become the two-term president with the most midterm defeats, surpassing Truman’s 74. BRUSSELS — The European Union cut its already low economic growth forecasts further on Tuesday, indicating the recovery will remain sluggish amid problems for the bigger countries, particularly France and Germany. The official forecast for growth this year in the 18-country eurozone was cut to 0.8 percent from a prediction of 1.2 percent made in the spring. Indicating little good was expected next year too, it reduced the 2015 prediction from 1.7 percent to 1.1 percent. “The situation in the euro area remains extremely fragile,” said German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Unemployment in the currency union was forecast to decrease at a painfully slow rate — after 11.6 percent this year, it is expected to dip to 11.3 percent next year and 10.8 percent in 2016. The broader 28-nation EU, which includes non-euro members like Britain and Sweden, was expected

to grow 1.3 percent this year from a previous 1.6 percent forecast. To help speed up the recovery, EU Financial Affairs Commissioner Pierre Moscovici said the bloc should focus on spending on special projects, for which the EU Commission has a 300 billion euro ($375 billion) plan. He said the plan would be presented to the EU parliament before the end of the year. “There is a real sense of urgency.” The economic weakness stems in particular from a poor performance in Europe’s larger countries, with the exceptions of Spain and Britain. The EU Commission sees growth this year “coming to a stop in Germany after a very strong first

quarter.” That is expected to be only temporary, however, with Europe’s largest economy forecast to grow again next year “with the support of a robust labor market, favorable financing conditions and improving external demand.” Unemployment is expected to be 5.1 percent in 2014. Some say Germany should spend more to boost growth because it has the public finances to do so. Merkel acknowledged the need for more investment, but stressed that her government doesn’t believe it should be done “on credit” and defended her drive for budget discipline. “Public investment and private investment must go hand in hand,” she said.

France, Europe’s second biggest economy, has been under pressure for years to improve its performance but the EU said that growth is forecast to remain low in 2014 and 2015. Unemployment is seen increasing to 10.4 percent this year. “Short-term indicators do not suggest that a firm recovery is imminent,” the EU report said. France has run into trouble with the EU over its high deficit. It should not expect quick turnaround. The EU predicts France’s budget deficit will continue to rise, hitting 4.7 percent of GDP in 2016, to become the biggest in the eurozone. Finance Minister Michel Sapin said France must work together with its EU partners “to answer together a crucial question: how to regain, as quickly as possible, more growth and jobs.” So often an outsider in EU matters, Britain will be happy to keep to that role with better economic fore-

casts than most other countries. Its growth is forecast at 3.1 percent this year and predicted to accelerate. Unemployment is set to stay on a downward trend, moving from 6.2 percent this year to 5.5 percent in 2016. Crisis Countries Many of the countries that were hit hardest by the financial crisis, mostly in southern Europe, had mostly improved forecasts. Spain should see growth accelerate to 1.7 percent next year, but joblessness would remain sky high at 24.8 percent this year before dropping slightly. Greece is expected to return to growth with a 0.6 percent expansion this year and 3.7 percent in 2016, compared with a drop of 8.9 percent in 2011. Ireland, which needed an international bailout ion 2010, is now set to become the fastest growing economy in the EU, with growth slated at 4.6 percent this year.

US trade deficit expands in September

WASHINGTON — The U.S. trade deficit rose in September as exports slumped, a sign that the world’s biggest economy is starting to feel the impact of weakening global growth. The Commerce Department said Tuesday that the trade deficit rose 7.6 percent to $43 billion in September. That marks the first increase in four months. A deficit occurs when a country imports more than it exports. Economic slowdowns in Europe and China appear to have hurt demand for American-made goods. Since September, the dollar has appreciated in value more than 4 percent against the euro to $1.25, making U.S. products less competitively priced abroad. Exports fell 1.5 percent to $195.6 billion, led by declines in shipments of industrial supplies, consumer products and capital goods such as engines and computers. September imports held steady at $238.6 billion for the second straight month. The trade gap has been tempered this year by the boom in U.S. energy production, which has reduced

dependence on foreign oil and increased U.S. petroleum exports. So far this year, petroleum imports are 7.6 percent below the level of a year ago. Part of that decline has come from falling oil prices, with crude imports costing 3.1 percent less so far this year. Petroleum exports will likely fall in the months ahead, as oil prices have slipped below $80 a barrel from more than $100 a barrel in June. “The collapse in crude oil prices means that the trade deficit will narrow again before the end of this year,” said Paul Ashworth, chief U.S. economist at Capital Economics. The politically sensitive trade deficit with China surged 17.6 percent to $35.6 billion in September, an all-time high. The release of the new Apple iPhone likely fueled much of the 12.7 percent increase in imports from China, just as growth in that economy has slipped and caused U.S. exports to fall 3.2 percent. The deficit with China is on track to set another record for the entire year, creating more pressure for Congress and the Obama administration to take steps to curb what critics call unfair trade practices in China.

U.S. manufacturers say that China is manipulating its currency for a trade advantage. They accuse China of undervaluing the yuan to make the goods it manufactures cheaper when they are exported, and American products more expensive in China. U.S. exports to the European Union also fell in September, decreasing 6.5 percent compared to August as several nations on that continent are grappling with the risk of a recession. Through September, the trade deficit totaled $378.1 billion, compared to $363.9 billion for the same period last year. For all of 2013, the deficit totaled $476.4 billion, 11.4 percent lower than in 2012. Many economists believe the trade deficit will rise slightly in 2014, as a stronger U.S. economy is drawing in more imports. The trade deficit is a drag on overall growth. That’s because U.S. producers are selling less abroad compared to foreign companies, while imports subtract from gross domestic product. Steven Ricchiuto, chief economist at Mizuho Securities, estimated that the October figures could reduce the estimate of 3.5 percent annual GDP growth in the third quarter by 0.4 percent.

Jakarta - The National Commission for Child Protection plans to soon build safe homes for child abuse victims, the commissions chairman, Aris Merdeka Sirait, stated here on Tuesday. “Currently, there is no specific place or house to accommodate or protect those children,” Aris pointed out. The commission will cooperate with the Ministry of Social Affairs to build safe homes for them. Moreover, the child protection commission had also organized a fundraiser last Sunday morning (Nov. 2) at the Hotel Indonesia roundabout. “The fundraising event was attended by about 1.5 thousand people, both children and adults,” he informed Antara. According to Aris, the child abuse victims, who had been residing in the safe houses, could undergo rehabilitation process such as treatment and therapy to help them overcome trauma. Jakarta - The Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry is set to immediately facilitate the repatriation of the bodies of two Indonesian murder victims in Hong Kong. “We will immediately facilitate the repatriation of the bodies so that they can be buried in Indonesia,” a spokesperson of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Michael Tene, said here on Tuesday. According to Tene, the Indonesian Consulate General in Hong Kong will follow up with the legal proceedings related to the case. “The preliminary hearing was held on Monday (November 3). The police will hold a reconstruction of the murders in the next few days. Further hearings will also be held. The Consulate General will follow up with the legal proceedings in Hong Kong related to the case,” he affirmed. A 29-year-old Englishman, Rurik Jutting, has been charged with the murder of the two women. The Hong Kong Police found their bodies in his apartment in Johnston Road, Wan Chai, in Hong Kong. The ministry has confirmed that both victims were Indonesian nationals. It plans to contact their families in Indonesia to coordinate with them for the repatriation of the bodies. The ministry spokesman added that both victims were in Hong Kong on tourist visas. He also appealed to all Indonesians abroad to be careful and to not get involved in any illegal activities. “Indonesian people should avoid (getting involved in) illegal or criminal activities that could threaten their lives,” Tene stated. The Indonesian Consulate General in Hong Kong confirmed the victims names as Sumarti Ningsih from Cilacap, Central Java, and Seneng Mujiasih from Muna, Southeast Sulawesi. The Hong Kong Police will conduct a reconstruction of the murder on November 7.

SAO PAULO — Former Brazil striker Adriano was charged by Rio de Janeiro prosecutors on Tuesday for his alleged connection with drug trafficking. Prosecutors claim the striker bought a motorcycle and gave it as a gift to a known drug dealer in the shantytown where he grew up. It will be up to a judge whether to accept the charges. Adriano could face up to 10 years in prison if he is convicted. It is not the first time he has been investigated for his alleged ties to drug trafficking in Rio, but he had never previously been charged. Several years ago, prosecutors had requested a probe into Adriano’s purchase of the motorcycle, which allegedly was registered in the name of the drug dealer’s mother and was used for drug trafficking. Prosecutors on Tuesday did not request Adriano’s arrest but asked for him to surrender his passport, claiming the player has enough money to try to flee the country if wanted. Adriano and his lawyers could not be imme-

diately contacted for comment. The 32-year-old forward reportedly has been negotiating with second-division French club Le Havre to return to football after several months without a club. He traveled to France recently to meet with club officials, and French media reported that a deal was close. Adriano played a few games with Brazilian club Atletico Paranaense earlier this year after being out of action for nearly two years because of injuries and off-field problems. He began his career with Flamengo and played for Inter Milan and AS Roma, among other clubs. He won four Serie A titles with Inter Milan early in his career, and with Brazil he won the 2004 Copa America and the 2005 Confederations Cup. He was in the starting lineup for Brazil at the 2006 World Cup, when the team was eliminated in the quarterfinals. Adriano was touted to make the team in 2010 in South Africa after leading Flamengo to the national title a year earlier, but was not included in the final squad. His last match with Brazil was in 2010.
