Swiss probe rape allegation against Roman Polanski ZURICH - A former German actress and model has told Swiss authorities that film director Roman Polanski raped her at his mountain chalet in 1972 when she was 15 years old, local prosecutors said on Wednesday. A lawyer for the 84-year-old French-Polish film director said he was aware of the allegation by Renate Langer and he dismissed it as an “absurd” attempt to generate media attention. Police in the northeastern Swiss canton of St. Gallen confirmed on Wednesday they had received a complaint from Langer, 61, last month about an alleged rape in Polanski’s house in 1972. The New York Times first reported the allegation. Efforts by Reuters in Germany to contact the former actress or her lawyers were not immediately successful. Swiss prosecutors were being asked to consider whether prosecution of Polanski was possible under Swiss law given the alleged crime occurred nearly a half century ago. Switzerland has eliminated the statute of limitations on sex

crimes against children under the age of 12. Prosecutors in St. Gallen said Langer had filed a complaint of rape against Polanski on Sept. 26. “The presumed act took place at the end of February 1972 in a chalet in Gstaad,” they said. The case would be passed on to colleagues in the canton of Bern, where Polanski has a home in the up-scale ski resort of Gstaad. In Poland, Polanski’s lawyer, Jan Olszewski, said he and his clients were aware of the “notification” by Langer. “In my opinion, the situation is so absurd that it is hard to even comment on it. This initiative - after 40 years - is primarily aimed at causing media noise,” he said. Langer is the fourth woman to accuse Polanski publicly of sexually assaulting them when they were teenagers. Swiss authorities arrested Polanski in 2009 on his arrival in Zurich to receive a lifetime achievement award at a film festival. He was released two months later on bail under “house arrest” in his Gstaad chalet. (rtr)

Aldean canceled stops in Los Angeles, San Diego and Anaheim, California, as part of his “They Don’t Know Tour.” The tour will resume in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Oct. 12 and refunds will be offered for the canceled shows. “I feel like out of respect for the victims, their families and our fans, it is the right thing to do. It has been an emotional time for everyone involved this week, so we plan to take some time to mourn the ones we have lost and be close with our family and friends,” Aldean said in a statement. The singer added: “Our first time back onstage will be a very tough and emotional thing for us, but we will all get through it together and honor the people we lost by doing the only thing we know how to do - play our songs for them.” Aldean was on stage on Sunday night at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival when Stephen Paddock, a retiree armed with multiple assault rifles, strafed the crowd at the concert from a high-rise hotel window, killing 59 people. The massacre left more than 525 people injured. Jennifer Lopez, currently in her “Jennifer Lopez: All I Have” residency at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, also canceled her scheduled shows this week. The performances will be rescheduled for later dates. “Jennifer is heartbroken that such a senseless tragedy occurred. Her thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families,” the singer’s representatives said in a statement on Tuesday. Organizers of the Austin City Limits Music Festival in Texas said on Tuesday they would offer refunds to people who no longer want to attend for security concerns after the Las Vegas shooting. SEMARAPURA - Hundreds of the Karangasem residents who were evacuated to Klungkung have returned home. Even though their home villages have been declared safe in the case that Mt. Agung erupts, many people are still anxious. Based on information compiled on Wednesday (Oct. 4), 243 evacuees from Juwuk Legi and Batu Gede hamlet, East Duda, Selat have returned home. They had all been evacuated to the field in Paksebali village, Dawan where some 164 evacuees remain as their home villages have been declared to be in a disaster-

prone area (KBR). Prosperity affairs unit chief of East Duda village, Gusti Lanang Rai, evacuees of various ages returned home after an appeal form their headman to do so. “ Their villages are in the safe zone”, he said. These evacuees however are not entirely relieved as they are still

anxious about a possible eruption of Mt. Agung. Many children in particular are worried. “Children who normally go to school in areas that have been declared as disasterprone, they are recommended to temporarily find schools in safe zones”, said Rai. Chief Executive of Klungkung Disaster Management Agency, Putu Widiada, explained that some of the 83 evacuees who had been evacuated to Swecapura Stadium have also returned home. Their transportation was facilitated by

police and the BPBD. “Residents of Muncan have returned home because their village is in a safe zone”, he explained. The government is collecting data about who has returned home. So far they have only collected data about residents of Klungkung. Of the total of 2,000 people, 16,00 are form Dawan. “ We are still collecting data, we are waiting for the numbers from Banjarangkan. We estimate that there swill be a total of 3,500” he said. Rai added that anyone who chooses to remain in

the evacuation site is welcome to do so. Likewise anyone who returns home and then decides to go back to the evacuation site is also free to do so and will be accommodate. Bali governor meets consuls and consul generals

About facilitating foreign tourists in the case of an eruption

DENPASAR - Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika, held a meeting with 33 consul generals and honorary consuls from various countries on Wednesday (Oct. 4) to explain the situation and possibilities regarding Mt. Agung. Although volcanic activity has declined, Mt. Agung remains on level IV or warning status.. “Our disaster management team is well prepared so even if there is an eruption we are confident that things will run well” he said. The Governor had the area within 12 km of Mt. Agung evacuated to ensure there would be no casualties. Bali’s provincial government also had sophisticate early warning devices installed to warn of a possible eruption. “Five countries have issued travel warnings to there citizens wishing to come to Bali. This is not a travel ban, however it just means that people visiting Bali should be careful I just now suggested that they revoke their travel warning and apparently they agree without question” said Governor Pastika. If Bali’s has to be closed to an eruption of Mt. Agung, the governor predicted that some 5,000 passengers would be unable to depart. This would impact the visas of foreign citizens who may have to overstay their visas. Visa and accommodations, he said would therefore be taken care of by the government. If foreign citizens must leave, they can fly out of Surabaya or Lombok, he added. “ We have arranged for transport and tickets” he said. Governor Pastika hopes that the explanation that he provided will prevent tourists from delaying or cancelling their trips to Bali. Honorary Consul of New Zealand, Indy Siddik, said that no insurance or country will provide a guarantee

in case of force majeur condition. So, he has said that New Zealanders coming to Bali are doing so at their own risk. This has not however stopped tourists from New Zealand form coming to Bali. ON Wednesday alone somw 700 visitors from New Zealand came to Bali for either business or leisure travel. Siddeik admitted that the travel warning has in fact not stooped his fellow citizens from visiting and explained that maybe it is because New Zealand also has active volcanoes so people there are used to such conditions. “Air New Zealand usually brings 750 people to Bali three times a week”, he added. On the other hand, Honorary Consul of Denmark, I.A. Ratna Sutamaya, said that she has been busy answering questions from Danish citizens wanting to come to Bali or other parts of Indonesia. “Denmark is a small country with just 6 million people, so there are not so many citizens wanting to come to Bali or Indonesia and certain do not amount to thousands. Currently, there are approximately 300 Danish citizens in Indonesia some in Medan and Jakarta”, she said. There has been a 30 to 40 percent decline in the number of Danish citizens visiting Bali since the warning status of MT. Agung was announced. “Some cancelled their trips while others postponed. Danish citizens rarely come as a group – they tend to travel alone or in couples. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that Bali will be safe”, she said. Denmark does not have any volcanoes so it is hard to reassure Danish people about the situation. Sutamaya added that she has trouble answering questions about whether or not Mt. Agung will erupt and how big of an eruption it might be. All she can do is assure people that the government of Bali has taken anticipatory measures to ensure people’s safety including providing a phone number for people to call to find out about MT. To kill time, Desak Made Rai makes pejatian baskets

SEMARAPURA - Staying in evacuation settlement located far away from one’s home village and having all one’s daily activities changed is unsettling for everyone. Not having anything to do but talk to other evacuees can become tiresome and make people’s feeling of homesickness stronger. Unlike the other evacuees from Darma hamlet, Muncan, Karangasem. 50 year old Desak Made Rai is weaving bamboo baskets used for pejaten offerings to kill time. This is also part of Rai’S regular activities back home. She usually makes several a day that she sells for IDR 15,000 a piece. “Well, it’s just a way to pass the time here instead of just sitting around. At home, I usually make about 5 pejatian baskets a day”, said Rai as she weaved the bamboo into pejaten baskets on Wednesday (Oct. 4). The Pejatian baskets that she has made over the last two days have been entrusted to a vendor at Gelgel Market, Klungkung that she has sold for IDR 4,000 a piece She explained that she is selling them for much cheaper than usual so that she can sell them quickly and earn some money while

is away from home. “My husband had time to back to our home and get the raw materials for me”, she added. Desak Made Rai said that pejatian baskets are readily needed by residents of Karangasem who use them when they hold rituals, especially for banten pejati used on holidays like full moon, new moon and other major ritual days in Bali. Around holidays, she can receive orders for 20 baskets a day. Now she is not taking orders because she has been evacuated from her home. “I have managed to make 5 baskets in 3 days and have entrusted them to a vendor at Gelgel market. They haven’t sold yet”, she said. Desak Made Rai said she and 9 members of her family were evacuated to Swecapura Stadium a week ago. Previsouly she had been evacuated to Rendang where she spent three days. She added that she hopes that the condition of Mt. Agung will soon return to normal so that she and her family can retunr to their village and get back to their regular activities. “ If there is an eruption, I hope it happens quickly so that we can go home soon” she said. Barongsai entertains children evacuated to Swecapura Stadium

SEMARAPURA - Hundreds of the children who were evacuated to Swecapura Stadium, Gelgel, Klungkung in anticipation of the possible eruption of Mount Agung looked cheerful on Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 4). Jembatan Budaya (JB) School provided a barongsai show for their entertainment. Parents also seemed to be enthusiastic about watching the show that took place in the the volley ball field in Swecapura Stadium. Many of the children seemed to really enjoy the show. Not a few of them really enjoyed the show. Some laughed and joked while some others ran to follow the barongsai showing off their skills. This form of entertainment was provided to reduce the boredom of the youngsters who were evacuated almost two weeks ago. One of the evacuees children who was busy watching the Barongsai show, was 12 year old Ni Kadek Evi Widyawati, from Sebudi hamlet/village, Karangasem, who said she was very happy to see the barongsai live as she had only ever seen ot on TV before” I

am so happy to see the barongai in person”, she said.. JB School founder Muhammad Fauzi Santoso, said that they also provided a gym class, basic Mandarin and helped to cook in the public kitchen. Santoso involved all the students and teachers fomr his school in providing interesting things for the evacuees kids. He said it was a way to keep the children in a good mood after having to leave their home, playground and school. “Our children have a strong sense of brotherhood. We are here to introduce and provide entertainment for children who have lost their playgrounds”, said Santoso. Previously, the evacuee children at this Swecapura Stadium were also taught basic Mandarin for their character building. Mandarin language is taught in a simple method, so that they can easily understand and pronounce it. In addition, children are taught to read Indonesian books. “We teach very simple Mandarin, things like saying thank you. Expression gratitude is a good way to build character from an early age” he added. (win)

Chanel models parade past Paris waterfalls

Govt starts to force non-cash transaction use

DENPASAR — The government began to intensify non-cash transactions by creating conditions that people inevitably use non-cash transactions. Since the launch of the national non-cash movement (GNNT) on August 14, 2014, this nationwide movement is running quite well. The coercion of using non-cash transactions is commenced from social assistance like family hope program (PKH) at the end of 2016 and now the use of 100 percent non-cash applies in toll roads by 2017. “We have several projects to develop this non-cash ecosystem in Indonesia. Bank Indonesia (BI) considers it necessary to do this in addressing the president’s concerns by first targeting society at lower level. BI initiated this GNNT program by trying to conduct non-cash transactions for social assistance recipients,” said Pungki Wibowo, from Policy and Payment System Supervision Division of BI at the kick-off of the 100 percent noncash at the Bali Mandara Toll road on Sunday (Oct. 1). Currently non-cash social assistance of the family hope program in the form of food aid has been distributed to the people throughout Indonesia by applying digital financial services agents and branchless banking agents. “So, the distribution of bank account and cards has reached the community at nooks and crannies where it includes the saving accounts, electronic money account to receive non-cash social assistance, both in the form of food aid, family hope program, educational financing assistance for school students (KIS), and school operat-

ing assistance is also distributed through non-cash. There is also farmers’ card that can establish non-cash ecosystem of rural communities,” he explained. The national non-cash movement also provides consumer protection. In this consumer protection, prior to the presence of interconnection, the use of non-cash transactions is subject to charge. “However, BI really emphasizes on security, efficiency and affordability,” he said. After establishing of more than 200,000 agents in Indonesia, the government through BI stepped up with non-cash transaction on toll payments. Toll payment with 4.5 million to 6 million transactions from vehicles per day has been switched to non-cash use. “This also gives consumer protection because people can make transaction faster. Then, people can save economic cost as the cost of congestion is very expensive. With non-cash, it can be made within 2 seconds that can overcome congestion. Thus, the economy can run well,” he said. In addition, the condition forcing the Indonesian people to use non-cash is the application of cash management system by Ministry of Home Affairs. All the transactions of local government in December 2017 will use non-cash. There will also be a migrative village program to support the Ministry of Manpower, Ministry of Village Affairs and Creative Economy Agency to use non-cash. In the near future, BI will also sign the MoU with the Ministry of Transportation. “For land, sea and air transportation has also formed non-cash community,” he explained. (kmb42)

Head of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) / Energy and Mineral Resources Agency (ESDM), I Gede Suartika, said that up to now the Mount Agung remains in warning status and has not erupted because the earthquakes intensity remains quite high. Moreover, the number of deep and shallow volcanic earthquake as well as local tectonic earthquake remains high. On Monday, the seismicity occurred almost reached 900 times. Then, visually the cloud of smoke from the crater stays visible. “The height of smoke is still in the range of 200-500 meters,” he said. Suartika added that seeing the remaining high intensity of the earthquake occurred, his agency will continue to collect data regarding the seismicity. Until now, condition of Mount Agung remains critical. “For the decline of status, we will see until next week whether there is a decrease or not. If there is a decrease in the earthquake, we will conduct an evaluation,” he said.

“If the seismicity continues to decline, there is possibility if the status will be decreased. Obviously, we are going to see the condition until next week how the development will look like,” he added. In the meantime, Sub-Division Head of Volcanic Mitigation for East Region, Devy Kamil Syahbana, explained that the very high frequency of earthquakes indicates there is still magma movement in the crater to penetrate the surface. “Until now, there has been no indication on the decline of the status. Mount Agung is still in warning status,” she said. Furthermore, she said that her agency did not only consider the seismicity but also various other factors in determining the decrease in the status. Firstly, she saw from the seismograph to identify the earthquake and tiltmeter gauge to measure sloping distance when mountain has expanded and deflated. Until now, the mountain still tends to expand. “In addition, we are also monitoring by satellite that can see any changes in the shape of the crater. In normal condition, there are no fractures and smoke. But now it shows both. This means the earthquakes occurred all this time have changed the look of Mount Agung’s crater. We also see the temperature of the crater changing very significantly,” said Devy Syahbana. (kmb41)

To ensure that such aid has been received by refugees, the mayor asked every post at each village can involve hamlet chief and the members of customary youth club (sekaa taruna) at each hamlet. The mayor asked the lowest officials to record the number of incoming independent refugees. An owner of a dive centre in Amed, around 15 km (9 miles) from the volcano and just outside the official “danger zone”, said many of her guests had cancelled. “If (the situation) lasts for nine months or more...then we have no choice but to close down because we will have no money left to operate and pay the staff,” said Helene Rabate, a Spaniard who runs the centre. Cafes and restaurants were largely empty and few visitors were seen at the usually crowded dive centres of this seaside town. Prankster, coughing fits mar Theresa May’s speech to activists

MANCHESTER - British Prime Minister Theresa May’s bid to reassert her dwindling authority was marred on Wednesday by a calamitous keynote speech interrupted by repeated coughing fits, a prankster and even letters of her slogan falling off the stage. May had wanted to use the Conservative Party’s annual conference to bring her divided party together and pitch herself as the only person able to deliver Brexit and keep opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn out of power. She started by apologising for her botched bet on a snap June election which stripped her party of its majority in parliament, then pitched a revitalised “British Dream” for which she proposed fixing broken markets and uniting the country. But her flow was interrupted by British comedian Simon Brodkin, who handed her a P45 letter, a document given to employees when they leave their job. The document had been “signed” by the comedian using the name of her ambitious Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson. Then May began a coughing fit and was repeatedly forced to take drinks of water, even coughing into her glass, and was proffered a lozenge from her finance minister, Philip Hammond. Bangladesh destroys boats ferrying Rohingya from Myanmar

SHAH PORIR DWIP - Bangladeshi authorities have destroyed about 20 boats that ferried Rohingya Muslims fleeing violence in Myanmar, accusing smugglers of using the huge exodus to bring methamphetamine into the country. Refugees told Reuters that border guards also beat and arrested passengers and crew as they landed at Shah Porir Dwip, on the southern tip of Bangladesh on Tuesday night, before the vessels were smashed to pieces by locals. The local commander of Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB), Lieutenant Colonel Ariful Islam, denied there were beatings, and said the action was a crackdown on human trafficking and the smuggling of methamphetamine, a drug known locally as “ya ba”. “The boats are trying to carry passengers they are not supposed to,” he told Reuters. He accused the organisers of the boat journeys of exploiting destitute Rohingyas by charging them for the short trip to Bangladesh. Some passengers told Reuters they had paid 10,000 Bangladeshi taka ($123) each for the trip, although others said they travelled free. I do not know where my sons are,” he told Reuters. “I don’t know why the BGB arrested my sons. People told me the BGB would shelter us in Bangladesh but yet they arrested them and also we had to spend the whole night sitting.” Asked about the allegations of beatings, Lieutenant Colonel Islam said: “It is never possible. BUSINESS Cambodia hikes minimum wage for textiles workers by 11 pct from 2018

PHNOM PENH - Cambodia agreed on Thursday to raise the minimum monthly wage of workers in its crucial textiles and footwear industry by 11 percent to $170 from next year. The sector generates $7 billion annually for the economy, and garment workers are in the spotlight ahead of a general election in 2018. Prime Minister Hun Sen Hun Sen, who has ruled the country for more than three decades, has met with garment workers almost every day in recent weeks, taking selfies with them and having lunch. Garment workers have clashed with police in recent years and some unions representing disgruntled employees have joined opposition supporters protesting Hun Sen’s government. Wages for garment workers have increased over 150 percent over the past five years from $61 per month in 2012 to the current $153. The country has had to tackle the challenge of competitiveness, with some arguing that the wage increases have made Cambodia less appealing for some firms. The garment industry employs an estimated 700,000 workers in Cambodia, helping to sustain

rural livelihoods in one of the world’s poorest countries. Government representatives, factories and unions backed the latest increase. Hun Sen “always pays attention to the welfare and livelihood of the workers,” a statement from the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training on Thursday said. The ministry said that new wage will come into effect on Jan. 1, 2018. It also said that the government will continue to delay taxing profits in the textiles sector and eliminate export management fees. Pav Sina, president of the Collective Union Movement of Workers, said unions were happy with the hike. “The prime minister always adds it every year, this is appropriate to what we tried to achieve,” Pav Sina said, while adding that higher wages would not make Cambodia less competitive. But Kaing Monika, deputy secretary general for the Garment Manufacturers Association in Cambodia, said the new minimum wage was “beyond the affordability of some of our members and the competitive level of the country”.(rtr)

UK car sales set for first annual decline since 2011 after September slump

LONDON - British new car registrations on Thursday appeared on course for their first annual fall since 2011 after a 9.3 percent tumble in September, a month which normally accounts for around 15 percent of demand. Sales were hurt by business and political uncertainty as Britain prepares to leave the EU and confusion over government plans on diesel and petrol cars, which could include new levies or restrictions, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said. Sales totaled 426,170 vehicles with demand falling across the board, SMMT data showed, leaving year-to-date registrations down 3.9 percent. “This decline will cause considerable concern,” SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes said. “Business and political uncertainty is reducing buyer confidence, with consumers and businesses more likely to delay big ticket

purchases.” Demand has fallen year on year since April due to a combination of factors including an increased vehicle excise duty, weaker consumer confidence and record sales in 2015 and 2016. But September is normally a strong month for car sales, partly due to the fact licence plates indicating the age of a vehicle change on March 1 and Sept. 1. Demand for diesel cars slumped 21.7 percent and petrol fell 1.2 percent. Sales to fleet business buyers declined 10.1 percent and to consumers fell by 8.8 percent. Howard Archer, chief economist at consultancy EY ITEM Club, said the decline in fleet demand,

which accounts for around half of all car demand, was of particular concern. “This indicates that businesses have become more reluctant to replace or add to their fleets amid weakened economic activity and a highly uncertain outlook,” he said. Only demand for alternative fuel vehicles, namely electric and hybrid plug-in vehicles, rose, increasing by 41 percent albeit from a very low base. The depth of the slump in September comes despite almost all major car companies offering thousands of pounds off new models with scrappage schemes, trade-in programmes and discounts.(rtr)

Catalonia moves to declare independence from Spain on Monday

BARCELONA - Catalonia will move on Monday to declare independence from Spain after holding a banned referendum, pushing the European Union nation towards a rupture that threatens the foundations of its young democracy.

Catalan President Carles Puigdemont said he favoured mediation to find a way out of the crisis but that Spain’s central government had rejected this. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s government responded by calling on Catalonia to “return to the path of law” first before any negotiations. Mireia Boya, a Catalan lawmaker from the pro-independence Popular Unity Candidacy (CUP) party, said a declaration of independence would follow a parliamentary session on Monday to evaluate the results of the Oct. 1 vote to break away. “We know that there may be disbarments, arrests ... But we are prepared, and in no case will it be stopped,” she said on Twitter. Puigdemont told the BBC he would ask the region’s parliament to declare independence following the referendum, which Spain’s government and constitutional court say was illegal and in which only a minority of Catalans voted. In a televised address on Wednesday night, Puigdemont said: “This moment calls for mediation. We have received various offers in the last hours and we will receive more.” Without specifically mentioning plans for an independence declaration, he added: “I am sure that in the next few days we will show the best of our country when the institutions of Catalonia will have to apply the results of the referendum. “Today we are closer than yesterday to our historic wish.” Rajoy’s government replied that Puigdemont had wasted an opportunity to put Catalonia back on a legal course. “If Mr. Puigdemont wants to talk or negotiate, or wants to send mediators, he knows perfectly well what he must do first: Return to the path of the law,” it said in a statement. Participants in the referendum opted overwhelmingly for independence, but turnout was only about 43 percent as Catalans who favour remaining part of Spain mainly boycotted the ballot.

Spain was only restored to democracy following the death in 1975 of military dictator Francisco Franco, under whom the Catalan language and traditions were suppressed.

The constitutional crisis in Spain, the euro zone’s fourthbiggest economy, has shaken the common currency and hit Spanish stocks and bonds. Madrid’s borrowing costs have risen sharply and reached their highest since March on Wednesday. The cost of insuring against potential losses on Spanish bank debt and Spanish, Italian and Portuguese sovereign debt has also jumped, suggesting an impact on the wider euro zone. Bank stocks were hit especially hard as the Ibex stock index fell below 10,000 points on Wednesday for the first time since March 2015. In a sign of the nervous public mood, Catalonia’s biggest bank, Caixabank, and Spain’s economy minister had earlier sought to assure bank customers that their deposits were safe. Puigdemont criticised Spain’s King Felipe VI who on Tuesday lambasted the “irresponsible behaviour” of the Catalan leaders. He said the king had disappointed many people in Catalonia by failing to call for dialogue and he accused King Felipe of endorsing the policies of Rajoy, which he said had been “catastrophic” for Catalonia. The EU executive called again on Wednesday for the Spanish government and Catalan authorities to open a dialogue. “It’s time to talk,” the European Commission’s deputy head, Frans Timmermans, told the European Parliament. Various attempts to find a mediated solution to the crisis emerged on Wednesday. Pablo Iglesias, leader of the left-wing Podemos party, proposed the Spanish and Catalan government try to agree on a mediator while the FC Barcelona football club said it had joined other groups in Catalonia seeking a negotiated solution. Spanish media reports said the Catalan regional government had been in touch with senior church figures to sound out the possibility of them playing a mediating role. (rtr)

Las Vegas gunman’s girlfriend says no advance knowledge of massacre

LAS VEGAS - The girlfriend of the Las Vegas gunman who killed 58 people and himself in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history was questioned by the FBI on Wednesday and said she had no idea he was “planning violence against anyone.” Marilou Danley, who returned late on Tuesday from a family visit to the Philippines and is regarded by investigators as a “person of interest,” said through a lawyer that the carnage Stephen Paddock unleashed while she was abroad caught her completely unaware. “He never said anything to me or took any action that I was aware of that I understood in any way to be a warning that something horrible like this was going to happen,” Danley, 62, said in a written statement read to reporters by her attorney in Los Angeles, where the FBI was questioning her. A Federal Bureau of Investigation official in Las Vegas, meanwhile, said no one has been taken into custody. But Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo told reporters he found it hard to believe that the arsenal of weapons, ammunition and explosives recovered by police in their investigation could have been assembled by Paddock completely on his own. “You have to make an assumption that he had some help at some point,” Lombardo said at a news briefing. Lombardo said the attack was the obvious outcome of me-

ticulous planning. “What we know is that Stephen Paddock is a man who spent decades acquiring weapons and ammo and living a secret life, much of which will never be fully understood,” the sheriff said. Police recovered nearly 50 firearms from three locations they searched, nearly half of them from the hotel suite. Twelve of the rifles there were fitted with so-called bump stocks, officials said, allowing the guns to be fired almost as though they were automatic weapons. In response to a question, Lombardo said investigators were examining the possibility Paddock’s purchase of more than 30 guns in October 2016 may have been precipitated by some triggering event in his life. He did not elaborate. If Paddock did have any accomplice, there remained no evidence as yet “to indicate terrorism” in the shooting spree, said Aaron Rouse, FBI special agent in charge of the Las Vegas field office. PONTIANAK - Pontianak in West Kalimantan Province has been named as the city offering the best public services, according to Mayor of Pontianak Sutarmidji. “It is because the Pontianak city government has long been applying information disclosure, which is part of public services,” the mayor remarked here on Thursday. He pointed out that if the standard operating services are accessible, it is a sign that information disclosure has been made. According to Sutarmidji, data on the regional income, expenditure budgets, and development plans are already available on the website of the Pontianak Regional Development Planning Board. “Later, we will integrate all, and our next years target is that everything will be incorporated in the Government And Smart city Landmark (Gencil) application,” he revealed.

A joint bid for the 2026 World Cup from the United States, Canada and Mexico unveiled a list of 32 potential host cities on Wednesday as the United Bid Committee moved onto the next stage of the process. The United States has the most potential host venues with 25 followed by Canada with four and Mexico three. The United Bid Committee said it had received applications from 41 cities and narrowed the list following a comprehensive review of the communities and facilities. “As we move to the next stage of the bid process, we’re even more confident we have everything needed to deliver the largest, most compelling FIFA World Cup in history and help accelerate the growth of soccer across North America and around the world,” said United Bid Chairman Sunil Gulati in a statement. “We have a vision for growing the game and engaging fans as never before. “Our biggest challenge will be finding ways to honor the enthusiasm of all the people across Canada, Mexico and the United States through the development of our united hosting concept.”
