Taylor Swift lets Aussie seniors ‘shake it off’
SYDNEY - Pop star Taylor Swift has leapt to the aid of a Sydney theatre company suffering an “artistic emergency” by giving the cast of 70-somethings permission to dance to her chart-topper “Shake it Off”. Sydney’s Belvoir Theatre took to Twitter with the hashtag “greygrey4taytay” to appeal to the American singer for permission to use the song in a play due to open Wednesday night. “I’m facing an artistic emergency I hope you can help with,” theatre director Anne-Louise Sarks tweeted to the singer on Tuesday
morning. She was referring to the play “Seventeen” about 17-year-olds on their last night of high school but played by actors in their 70s. In the production’s show-stopper scene, the cast dance to “Shake it Off” -- and they had learned all the word to the song -- yet at the last minute they had been denied
permission to use it, reportedly by the song’s publishers. “Is there anything at all you can do?!!” Sarks pleaded. The response was quick with the singer giving the green light via Twitter: “Permission granted. Good luck with your opening night.” Swift is a global superstar with more than 61.5 million followers on Twitter but her work was largely unknown to the cast of the Seventeen until they began rehearsing the play, which was written specifically for them. BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Indian film star Priyanka Chopra says she was eager to add a U.S. TV series to her resume. “It’s like the golden age of television right now and I wanted to be part of that ... revolution,” Chopra said of her role as a FBI recruit in ABC’s new drama “Quantico.” It debuts Sept. 27. But she told the network that she didn’t want to be cast for the color of her skin, what she looks like or where she’s from, Chopra told a TV critics’ meeting Tuesday. The goal was a worthy project that “gave me the respect of being an actor.” Chopra said she is glad to bring further diversity to ABC, which includes characters of various ethnicities in “Fresh Off the Boat,” ‘’black-ish” and other series. Since coming to America as a student, “I never saw anybody who looked like me on TV, and this was an opportunity for me to change that.” She plays Alex Parrish, an IndianAmerican whose fledgling FBI career and freedom are in jeopardy after a New York terrorist attack. It’s a juicy role in a “smart show’ that any actress would covet, she said. Parrish is “Jason Bourne in female form,” Chopra said. KUTA - Two Australian airlines - Virgin Australia and Jetstar - have canceled all flights in and out of the I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar, Bali, as more volcanic ash from Mount Raung flows into flight path. General Manager of the Nugrah Rai’s Angkasa Pura I airport operator Trikora Harjo confirmed the cancelation on Wednesday. Harjo said despite cancelation from two Australian airlines, airport remained open normally. “So far, the airport has operated normally,” he stated. Jetstar cancelled four flights respectively from Bali to Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, and Singapore, he noted. Virgin Australia cancelled 10 flights in and out of the Ngurah
Rai Airport. The flights were respectively to Bali from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth; and from Bali to Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane. Virgin was quoted as saying by Australian media, new.com.au, that the eruption from Mt Raung and unfavorable winds have made for
unsuitable flying conditions, and are urging customers in Bali not to go to Denpasar airport until they have a confirmed rebooking. The unfavorable winds are expected to continue throughout Wednesday. The Bali airport authorities did not issue a Notice to Airmen (Notam) because the flights cancellations were decision of the two airlines. Currently, two airports in East Java, respectively in Banyuwangi and Jember, have been closed as volcanic ash from Mount Raung blows towards south and southwest. The I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali have been
forced to close temporary for some times, affecting a total of 277 domestic and international flights. More than 75 thousand passengers failed to fly due to the cancellations. Assessor Team want to meet Tourism Minister
Team 11, the Assessor of National Tourism Strategic Area (KSPN) Bali, spoke out on Wednesday concerning the Minister of Tourism’s refusal to follow their recommendation to exclude Besakih, Mount Agung and surrounding areas, West Bali National Park (including Menjangan Island and surrounding area) from inclusion in the KSPN. They also suggested that Tahura Ngurah Rai also be excluded from the KSPN of Sanur-Kuta, Nusa Dua and surroundings. According to Secretary of Team 11, Drs. Ec. I Putu Anom, M.Par, the team would like to meet with Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya, to discuss this matter given that Yahya was recently quoted in the media as saying that he rejected the Team 11 recommendations. If infrastructure is damaged, it will have a boomerang effect on us,” said the royal figure of Ubud. When asked about the statement of the Minister of Tourism that three out of 11 regions must remain ncluded in the KSPN -including Besakih, the man affectionately addressed as Tjok Ace judged that such a decision should be considered by all relevant parties. If the three zones are excluded from the KSPN, it will take longer to process the return. “I think this really needs to be studied again -if the area of Besakih requires clean water, roads or whatever, these needs will be prioritized by the central government if the area is included in the KSPN,” he said. There are a number of requirements for the sanctity of Besakih to be maintained, such as the prohibition of tourist accommodation, he added, the surrounding areas however could still be included in the KSPN. “If it is necessary to set forth prohibitions on the construction of tourist facilities such as hotels or golf courses within so many km from the Temple, then this should due included in the regulations of the KSPN. GIANYAR - Minister of Tourism Arief Yahya has apparently rejected the recommendation that Besakih area, Mount Agung and surrounding areas be excluded from the attachment of Government Regulation No.50/2011 on National Tourism Strategic Area (KSPN). The inclusion of Besaih in the KSPN has been met with opposition from religious leaders that consistently order that Besakih remain zoned as spiritual and not zoned for tourism. The governor of Bali is now expected to take a stand to maintain the sanctity of Besakih. Ida Pedanda Made Gunung affirmed that Besakih belongs to a spiritual zone, not a tourism zone which are used to explore economic-based potential. If Besakih Temple and surroundings remain included in the KSPN, Pedanda worries that this area will become a wide open door to investors wanting to develop tourist accommodations there. “Pedanda really wants an explanation from the Minister of Tourism. If travelers come to Besakih wanting to pray, ok. But if this (Besakih) is included in the KSPN, Pedanda worries that it will open the gateway to the construction of tourist accommodations such as hotels and golf courses,” he said. “Team 11 is made up of academics from various fields of science, representative of Bali’s Provincial Parliament, Hindu Parisadh, and customary village institutions, Bali’s provincial government, and people who work in the field of tourism. We have worked hard and gone through the long processes involving focused group discussion (FGD) with various parties,” he explained. The assessment team then finally formulated their recommendations which they sent to the Ministry of Tourism. “After we sent the recommendation, we met with staff in the Ministry of Tourism in Jakarta who asked for further input. They did not make any kind of decision at that time,” explained Anom. “If the Minister of Tourism rejects our recommendations but is willing to discuss this matter face to face, we are ready to explain our recommendations,” he asserted. Anom hopes that in the future, the central government will discus matters with regional representatives before making national plans, because local people have more insight into their surroundings and how development can be done in a sustainable, ecologically sound way that works in favour of the local communities. Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika when asked about this issue simply said that if Bali does not request a budget to maintain these areas (because they are excluded form the KSPN) then the central government will allocate this budget to other provinces. “Whether this budget is revoked or not is up to us, because after all that’s how working bottom up goes. We can receive this budget by submitting a proposal, if we don’t request such a budget then there will be no funds for us,” he said. Pastika went on to explain that the people of Bali should know that the KSPN is intended to help regions improve and build their tourism destinations, and that everything still depends on each region because proposals are submitted by the regions. In other words, the central government will provide a budget to Bali after regions submits a proposal requesting it. For example, Pastika mentioned that Besakih area is in need of lots of improvements in terms cleanliness, roads, and the creation of security posts, health posts as well as an information centre. “All of these improvements required funding and both the provincial and regency budgets are limited. That’s why we need the central government budget - so we can make these improvements to the area of Besakih,” claimed Pastika. (kmb32)

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Thousands of womb cancers prevented by the pill: study
PARIS - The contraceptive pill has prevented some 200,000 cases of womb cancer over the last decade in rich nations alone, according to research published Wednesday. A study in the medical journal The Lancet Oncology found that taking “the pill” over an extended period provided protection against endometrial cancer, which affects the womb. The researchers estimated that in total, over the past 50 years, some 400,000 endometrial cancers were avoided in high-income countries. The anti-cancer benefits persisted for decades after women stopped taking the pill, according to the study, which pooled data on 27,276 women with endometrial cancer in two dozen countries. “Women who use it when they are in their 20s or even younger continue to benefit into their 50s and older, when cancer becomes more common,” noted co-author Valerie Beral, from the University of Oxford. “People used to worry that the pill might cause cancer, but in the long term the pill reduces the risk of getting cancer,” she said in a statement. The study found that every five years of oral contraceptive use reduced the risk by about a quarter. Taking the pill for 10 years, for example, cut the odds of developing endometrial cancer before age 75 from 2.3 to 1.3 cases per 100 users. This held true whether women used the pill in the 1960s, when oestrogen doses in contraceptives were high, or in the 1980s and later, when the doses decreased. Women’s reproductive history and ethnicity did not change the results, which were also substantially the same for women who were overweight, smoked or consumed alcohol. But the researchers stopped short of suggesting that women start taking oral contraceptives as an anti-cancer measure. “The finding is impressive and instructive,” Nicolas Wentzensen and Amy Berrington de Gonzalez, both from the US National Cancer Institute, wrote in a commentary also carried by the journal. But it is too early, they say, to know “whether an overall health benefit of oral contraceptive use exists that warrants specific recommendations for chemoprevention.” Previous research, they point out, has linked oestrogen intake to cardiovascular problems, including strokes and heart attacks due to blood clots. Studies have also linked use of the pill to a slight increase in breast cancer risk. (afp)

Add spice for a longer life? PARIS - Eating spicy food, especially fresh chilli, has been linked to a lower risk of death in a Chinese study, researchers said Tuesday. But they cautioned it was too early to draw a final conclusion on the potential benefits of fiery fare, and urged further research that may lead to “updated dietary recommendations”. The study, published in The BMJ journal, collected dietary data from nearly 490,000 people, aged 30 to 79, in China. They were enrolled between 2004 and 2008, and their health monitored for an average of seven years. Just over 20,000 participants died in the period. “Compared with participants who ate spicy foods less than once a week, those who consumed spicy foods one or two days a week were at a 10 percent reduced risk of death,” said a statement
from The BMJ. And those who ate spicy foods almost every day, “had a relative 14 percent lower risk of death compared to those who consumed spicy foods less than once a week.” The association was similar in men and women, and stronger in those who did not consume alcohol. Fresh and dried chilli peppers were the most commonly used spices -- and the association was higher with the fresh variety, according to the team led by researchers at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. The answer may be found in an ingredient of spices -- capsaicin, which has previously been suggested to posses anti-obesity, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammation and anti-cancer properties. The team urged “further prospective studies in other populations”, that may
lead to dietary recommendations and “development of functional foods, such as herbal supplements.” In a comment, Kevin McConway of the Open University urged against jumping to conclusions. “If people who eat spicy food more often have lower death rates, that might indeed be caused by the chilli eating, or it might be caused by something different that is related to eating chillis and also, separately, happens to promote health. “Maybe this is something in the way spices are used in Chinese cooking, or related to other things people eat or drink with the spicy food. Maybe it has something to do with the sort of people, in China, who tend to eat more spicy food.” People who ate more chilli were, for example, more likely to live in rural areas. (afp)
Kids’ picky eating can have depression, anxiety links
WASHINGTON - Picky eating among children may not be just a passing phase but could flag potential concerns such as depression and anxiety, a study released Monday found. According to the Duke Medicine report in the journal Pediatrics, more than 20 percent of children aged 2-6 are picky eaters. About 18 percent of those were classified as moderately picky and another three percent as extremely so. It was in these subsets -- kids who are moderately or severely fussy about
the foods they eat -- that scientists found greater occurrence of mental health issues such as clinical depression or anxiety. Since picky eating can also cause poor nutrition and family conflict, the report said, it appears important for parents and medical staff to keep an eye on a risk of underlying emotional issues. “These are children whose eating has become so limited or selective that it’s starting to cause problems,” said lead author Nancy Zucker, director of the Duke Center for Eating Disorders.
“Impairment can take many different forms. It can affect the child’s health, growth, social functioning, and the parent-child relationship. The child can feel like no one believes them, and parents can feel blamed for the problem.” Children whose picky eating becomes a serious challenge also may have what doctors now call “Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder.” Mental health professionals believe they can help some of these children with behavioral therapy over foods that may cause them anxiety. Dozens of cooperative threatened to be liquidated in Badung
MANGUPURA - As having not reported the performance of the cooperative over the years, the Badung Cooperatives, SMEs, Industry and Trade Agency threatened to liquidate dozens of cooperatives in the region. Moreover, his party has sent announcement letter to 30 cooperatives spreading across six subdistricts. “Announcement of the 30 cooperatives to be liquidated is installed in each subdistrict. Cooperatives having been liquidated through the decision of the meeting of members within the past five years amounted to six units,” said I Ketut Karpiana, the Head of the Agency, Tuesday (Aug. 4). According to Karpiana, delivery of the announcement poses an early stage procedures for liquidation of the cooperatives by government with reference to the Law No.25/1992 concerning with Cooperatives; Government Regulation No.17/1994 on the Procedures for Liquidation of Cooperatives; and Ministerial Decree No.269/M/ IX/1994. “We will wait until next
two months. If the cooperatives announced do not respond, we will liquidate them,” he said. Attachment of the announcement on the liquidation of the cooperatives, he said, is based on the reason of inactivity, the absence of activities as mandated by the Cooperatives Law, one of which is implementing annual meeting of the members. Of the totally 561 cooperatives, 106 cooperatives are inactive. “Actually there are 100 cooperatives that are under development, where 30 of them can no longer be fostered, so that we issue the announcement of liquidation,” he said. Karpiana added that legislations on the cooperatives mandate that
any cooperatives carrying out no annual meeting of the members at least for two years in succession are required to be developed and then given a reprimand and finally liquidated. Ministerial Regulation No.17 mandates the system and procedures of the cooperative liquidation, at first there will be liquidation by the members and the government. Liquidation by the government is meant to avoid bad influence to healthy cooperatives in the Badung County. “We expect this announcement of liquidation can become an evaluation for the cooperative movement so that in the future the cooperatives can undertake their activities in accordance with the legislation in force,” he said. “Most of the cooperatives are located at hotels in Kuta area. Uighurs deported from Thailand to China remain in detention
BEIJING — Chinese state media say minority Muslim Uighurs (WEE’-gurz) deported from Thailand to China remain in detention while authorities investigate whether some planned to join the Islamic State or other groups in the Middle East. State media also said some of the 109 Uighurs fought with Thai and Chinese police as they were being put on a flight back to China last month out of fear they would be executed. The July 9 repatriations were heavily criticized by the U.N. refugee agency, the United States and others. In Turkey’s capital, Istanbul, protesters ransacked the Thai Consulate. The Global Times newspaper on Wednesday said many had planned to travel from Thailand to Turkey and may have ended up fighting in neighboring Iraq or Syria. TABANAN - Approximately 68.8 hectares of paddy plants in Tabanan experienced drought due to small water discharge from the upstream. In the meantime, about 333 hectares of other paddy plants are threatened by drought. Although it has not led to harvest failure, if the paddy plants continue to lack of water, the threat of harvest failure can happen especially in the category of severe drought. Based on the data up to July 2015, the drought rate of paddy plants in Tabanan falls into three categories, namely light, moderate and severe. Light drought occurred in Kerambitan subdistrict covering 36 hectares, Marga subdistrict (7 hectares), East Selemadeg (12 hectares), Tabanan subdistrict (0.8 hectare) and West Selemadeg (2 hectares). Drought of moderate category occurred in Kerambitan subdistrict (4 hectares), while severe category occurred in Kerambitan subdistrict covering 6 hectares and one hectare in Marga subdistrict. The trains were crossing a small bridge near the rain-swollen Machak River, about 950 kilometers (590 miles) south of New Delhi. Another train had passed the same culvert 10 minutes before the first derailment without any problem, but then a flash flood caused part of the track to sink into the rain-soaked ground, said A.K. The accident occurred just before midnight, and although rescue workers soon reached the
site, their efforts were hampered by the darkness, officials said. At least two coaches had been partially submerged in the mud, said railway official Anil Saksena. While most people had been pulled to safety, rescue workers were still searching for passengers likely trapped. “We are getting reports that there were flash floods and the tracks caved in. Most of the coaches had passed but the last few carriages were derailed,” Saksena said. At least 24 bodies have been recovered so far and one person was seriously injured, said Bijendra Kumar, a railway official in Bhopal, the main
city in Madhya Pradesh state. Junior Home Minister Kiren Rijiju said more than 300 people have been rescued. By Wednesday morning, the unaffected coaches had been moved from the tracks and rescue operations were nearing a close, according to Kumar. He said that railway workers would soon start repairing the tracks so traffic can resume. Dozens of trains have been blocked from moving due to the accident, while others have been diverted to other routes. The rain eased Wednesday following two days of heavy downpour. India has one of the world’s largest railway networks and carries more than 23 million passengers each day. However, many parts of the vast network are poorly maintained and accidents are common. According to the World Bank, the draft framework, under discussion for several years, represents “a major step forward” for the development lender that strengthens its protection of the environment and the world’s poor and vulnerable in its investment projects. In early March, the World Bank
acknowledged that internal reviews had found significant flaws in the way it handles the resettlement of people to make way for development projects. Under the proposed framework, the World Bank will demand that borrowing countries extend labor rights, including for the first time
the rights to collective bargaining and freedom of association. The institution also amended a previous proposal on environmental standards that had raised ire among nongovernmental organizations and other groups in July 2014. Now, the Bank will deem that “offsets” -- actions to compensate for “unavoidable biodiversity impacts” linked to economic development -- should be considered “a last resort” and prohibited in certain
instances. Indigenous peoples affected by projects would need to give “free prior and informed consent” before the projects can proceed, and proposes that in some instances offsets would be prohibited altogether. If prior consent “can’t be shown, the World Bank will not proceed with the aspects of the project relevant to indigenous peoples, it said.
In a joint statement, 19 civil society organizations, including Oxfam and Human Rights Watch, denounced the new World Bank framework, calling it a “dangerous rollback in environmental and social protections.” The proposed rules “will vastly weaken protections for affected communities and the environment at the same time as the bank intends to finance more high-risk projects,” they said. China wants its currency, the yuan, included in a basket of currencies used in IMF operations along with the U.S. dollar, euro, British pound and Japanese yen. It was hoping the yuan could be added this Jan. 1. The IMF board will consider later this month the staff’s recommendation for a delay until Oct. 1 of next year. China believes it deserves to be included because it boasts the world’s second-biggest economy. But the yuan is not as widely used or freely traded as the other four currencies. The IMF staff said in a report released Tuesday that it was also worried that adding a new currency Jan. 1 might rattle financial markets on the first day of trading next year. There have been estimates by some private economists that the Chinese economy will get a major boost if its currency is added because the IMF seal of approval will encourage more foreign participation in China’s financial markets. Since mid-June, the Chinese stock market has been plunging in value despite efforts by the government to end the free-fall. The currency club China wants to join is known as the IMF’s Special Drawing Rights basket. This is a virtual currency the IMF can use for emergency loans and IMF member countries can use to bolster their own reserves in times of crisis. (ap)

SAN FRANCISCO — Apple is slumping as the usually high-flying tech stock struggles with the burden of raised expectations. The world’s most valuable public company saw its stock price drop for a fifth straight day on Tuesday, falling as much as $5.19, or 4.4 percent, to $113.25 as investors fret over China’s economy and whether Apple can keep growing at the pace it’s maintained over the last few quarters. Apple shares closed Tuesday at $114.64 — down 14 percent since
hitting a record $133.60 in February. That puts Apple in a “correction,” which is Wall Street jargon for price declines of 10 percent or more from a peak. The slide has wiped out more than $96 billion in market value. The stock also dropped below its 200-day moving average, a technical indicator that traders use to gauge momentum. And as a sign of Apple’s outsized role in the market, its decline Tuesday accounted for more than half of the 47-point
drop in the Dow Jones industrial average for the day. Apple is also by far the biggest component in the Standard & Poor’s 500, making up 3.6 percent of the index, which is a benchmark for most mutual funds. Apple sold more than 47 million of its signature iPhones in the last quarter, or 35 percent more than a year earlier. That drove the company’s profit and earnings above Wall Street estimates. But demand for the iPhone and Apple’s new smartwatch still fell short of some
analysts’ more bullish predictions, and executives gave a forecast for the current period that was also lower than some analysts expected. That has sent the stock into a decline since Apple reported earnings on July 21. Shareholders are also worried about recent hiccups in China’s economy, because the country is viewed as one of Apple’s biggest markets for expansion, said Daniel Ives, a managing director and senior analyst for FBR Capital Markets.
Apple’s current slump isn’t as severe as an earlier slide that began almost three years ago, in a period when investors worried that the Cupertino, California, company had run out of ideas to counter growing competition from other smartphone and tablet makers. Presidential decree on illegal fishing to be ratified
KUTA - The presidential decree on illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing will be ratified soon by President Joko Widodo, according to Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Susi Pudjiastuti. “The draft has been completed. We only need his signature,” she said on Tuesday. According to Pudjiastuti, the president was urged to ratify the decree because illegal poaching of fish by foreign fishermen has been detrimental to the country.
“This decree is an urgent requirement to deter perpetrators of the crime,” the minister remarked. The regulation is expected to help complete the legal proceedings
related to illegal fishing activities. Pudjiastuti further noted that the presidential decree will serve as the basis for the illegal fishing taskforce, formed by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, to take action against perpetrators of the crime. “This regulation is intended to allow the taskforce to take action against the criminals legally and
formally. The Fisheries Act can be applied directly while capturing them. It is important that the legal processes do not stop in court,” she emphasized. Moreover, the ministry, along with other relevant agencies, has detained dozens of foreign vessels caught fishing in Indonesian territory. Some of them were sunk directly

Four illegal rafting found in Gianyar GIANYAR - The Civil Police of Permitting Department in Gianyar carry out inspection on Wednesday, August 5 on the rafting along Ayung River. In the inspection, they found that four rafting business don’t have the proper permit. They were directly given a warning and reprimand letters. The illegal rafting business are Tukad Rafting owned by Komang Agus Punarbawa, Rejeki Ayung Rafting owned by Ketut Sukayasa, New Gangga Rafting owned by Dewa Ngakan Putu Ganta and Ubud Rafting owned by Ketut Suasnawa. During the inspection, each owner could not show the proper paperwork to the officers. Based on that, the head of Operational Division in Gianyar Civil Police Wayan Suala Susila said that there will be action taken according to the rule and regulation. “We stop the rafting from operating while the owners take care of the permit. They will be also summoned to our office to explain about their conduct,” he said. Suala explained that the inspection has been done for several time. During the previous inspection, a few rafting business also didn’t have any permit. “For the business that cannot show the permit during the previous inspection, we gave the first warning and now the second one. Crews report some progress against huge California wildfire
MIDDLETOWN, California — Firefighters are reporting some progress against a Northern California wildfire that has charred more than 100 square miles (260 square kilometers) of terrain, destroying buildings, threatening many others and sending thousands of residents fleeing. As firefighters and equipment from outside the state poured in to battle the blaze burning about 100 miles (160 kilometers) north of San Francisco, more than 13,000 people were required or urged to leave their homes, vacation cabins and campsites. Firefighting officials said crews made some progress Tuesday with some help from light rain. The blaze was 20 percent contained, but it wasn’t expected to be corralled until at least Monday. Teams were able to build a buffer between the flames and some of the estimated 6,900 homes it threatens. Despite the fire’s growth, no additional homes were consumed outside the two dozen already destroyed. The fire, by far the largest of 11 burning in Northern California, started on July 29 in drought-withered brush that hasn’t burned in years in the Lower Lake area. A cause hasn’t been determined. The National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho, has the wildfire listed as the nation’s highest priority for crews and equipment even as potentially destructive blazes burned in Oregon
and Washington, spokesman Mike Ferris said. He called the fire that has burned 101 square miles (261 square kilometers) “one big monster.” “In Northern California alone, all their resources are committed, and they are having to go outside the geographic area to get resources, whether it’s aircraft or firefighters,” Ferris said. With more than 3,000 firefighters battling the smoky blaze and evacuees seeking shelter, motels were booked up for days within miles. Margot Simpson, a manager at the Red Cross evacuation center set up at Middletown High School, said she hadn’t had any luck finding a room for a person in a wheelchair after searching four of the bigger nearby communities. “I started in the phone book at the top of the list, and I started going down and I got nothing,” she said. Many people not affected by the fires stepped up to help. Tabetha Atwood, the owner of Our Happy Tails Etc., a local doggy bakery, was helping to match frightened dogs with their owners at a command center at
the Moose Lodge in Clearlake Oaks that was serving as a community assistance center. Atwood also had dog treats on hand for people who came by with their pets while other volunteers gave out pillows, apples and piles of French toast to people displaced by the fire. “These are our friends, our family and our neighbors,” she said. By Tuesday afternoon, with 15- to 20mph (24- to 32-kph) winds coming from the northwest, the Moose Lodge itself was being threatened and the people there asked to leave. Layna Rivas of Clearlake Oaks tried to remain calm after checking the latest map showing the wildfire’s overnight progress. It showed the artists’ haven she has spent the last five years building directly in the flames’ path. Rivas was thinking of her baby grand piano in a studio made out of straw bales. “Worst part is I can’t get in to see what’s been damaged or no,” she said. “My heart is heavy at the thought of my once epic view of the valley that had an array of life and colors now grey and lifeless.” (ap)

Indonesia’s economy was measured by its gross domestic product (GDP), amounting to Rp2,866.9 trillion based on its current price in the second quarter of 2015 or Rp2,239.3 trillion under its constant price. Suryamin explained that in terms of production, the growth was driven by almost all business sectors, with the highest achieved in the education service sector, which
grew by 12.16 percent. “In terms of expenditures, it was supported by almost all components, with the highest achieved by the household consumption spending component at 4.97 percent,” he affirmed. Indonesia’s economy in the second quarter of 2015 grew by 3.78 percent (quarter-to-quarter) compared to the previous quarter. In terms of production, the highest growth was recorded in the agriculture, forestry, and fishery sectors reaching 10.09 percent, meanwhile in terms of spending, government consumption recorded the highest growth at 32.17 percent.
Indonesia’s economy in the first quarter of 2015 grew 4.70 percent. Production in all business sectors grew except for mining and excavation, which was down 3.58 percent. Spending was driven by household spending that grew by 4.99 percent. “Spatially, Indonesia’s economic structure in the second quarter of 2015 was dominated by provinces in Java and Sumatra,” Suryamin pointed out. Provinces in Java were the largest contributors to the GDP, reaching 58.35 percent, followed by provinces in Sumatra, at 22.31 percent, and Kalimantan, at 8.22 percent. (ant)
JAKARTA - The General Elections Commission (KPU) should postpone the regional head elections in some seven regions as they only have one pair of candidates. The KPU has decided to postpone elections in seven regions to February 2017. The delay was mandated by Law No. 8/2015 on regional elections. According to KPU’s data, the seven regions comprise four districts and three cities. The four districts are Tasikmalaya in West Java; Blitar and Pacitan in East Java; and North Central Timor in East Nusa Tenggara. To change the current Regional Elections Law, the president can issue a government regulation in lieu of law (Perppu). Following this, Chairman of the Election Organization Ethics Council (DKPP) Jimly Asshiddiqie argued that a Perppu is a viable solution to the problem and carries the lowest risk. “Although I do not prefer the president issuing a Perppu,” he remarked. According to Asshiddiqie, the Perppu will provide a solution to the seven regions that only have one pair of candidates. “A delay in holding the regional elections in seven regions will create problems and will be a violation of the people’s rights,” he emphasized. He acknowledged that the Perppu often stirred up a controversy, but the president should arrive at a decision. “Someone should take responsibility. If no one can do it, it will impose on other institutions,” he reiterated. He noted that the president has the constitutional right to issue a Perppu to provide a solu-
LHOKSEUMAWE - Some 100 refugees from Bangladesh being accommodated at Blang Mangat immigration office in Lhokseumawe city, Aceh province, have been repatriated, according to local immigration spokesman Albert Djalius. “We hope that all the Bangladeshi refugees can be repatriated in mid-August 2015,” Djalius stated
on Wednesday. He remarked that some 100 refugees who were stranded in Aceh in early May, this year, had complete immigration documents, and therefore, they were flown back to their country of origin from Kuala Namu Airport in Medan, North Sumatra, on Tuesday. However, he noted that 71 other
refugees are still being accommodated in shelters, awaiting a clear demographic data from the Embassy of Bangladesh to Indonesia in Jakarta. According to Djalius, the repatriation was managed by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), which has been making all the necessary arrangements for
providing accommodations. “The Bangladeshi immigrants will be repatriated gradually, as they are waiting for their documents,” he stated. said Meyer, who Israeli media reported to be 18 years old, was being held in connection to “his involvement in violent activities and recent terror attacks.” The ministry would not elaborate on the suspicions against him. Romario says Brazil probe will question Marin in Switzerland SAO PAULO — Brazilian senator and former star player Romario said Tuesday the inquiry he’s leading into the national football confederation will question former President Jose Maria Marin in detention in Switzerland, as well as a prominent Brazilian businessman in the United States. Romario is head of the Senate committee that was installed last month to investigate allegations of wrongdoing by Brazilian football officials. He said Marin will be questioned in Switzerland, where he was arrested when the FIFA corruption scandal broke in May and is awaiting an extradition ruling. Romario said senators will also go to the United States to question Brazilian businessman Jose Hawilla, owner and founder of the Brazilian company Traffic
Group. Hawilla pleaded guilty last December to numerous charges in connection with the U.S.-led probe into FIFA corruption. “My requests have been approved,” Romario said. “We will hear Marin in Switzerland, where he is in prison, and Hawilla in the United States, where he is under house arrest.” It wasn’t clear whether the committee had already negotiated access to the two men with authorities in Switzerland or the United States. Marin, who became a confederation vice president after his term as president ended earlier this year, was among seven officials detained in Switzerland after the investigation by U.S. authorities. MILAN - AC Milan coach Sinisa Mihajlovic has dismissed complaints about a Nigel de Jong tackle during Tuesday’s friendly match against Bayern Munich by saying that “football is not ballet.” De Jong found himself involved in another row over his rugged playing style when a tackle on Joshua Kimmich led to the Bayern player being taken off after only 20 minutes. “I didn’t see De Jong’s tackle on Kimmich, but football is not
ballet and fouls are part of the match,” Mihajlovic told reporters after the game, according to Italian media. “For that reason, games such as this one can not be defined as friendlies.” The match, won 3-0 by Bayern, was part of a pre-season tournament in Munich. Romario says Brazil probe will question Marin in Switzerland SAO PAULO — Brazilian senator and former star player Romario said Tuesday the inquiry he’s leading into the national football confederation will question former President Jose Maria Marin in detention in Switzerland, as well as a prominent Brazilian businessman in the United States. Romario is head of the Senate committee that was installed last month to investigate allegations of wrongdoing by Brazilian football officials. He said Marin will be questioned in Switzerland, where he was arrested when the FIFA corruption scandal broke in May and is awaiting an extradition ruling. Romario said senators will also go to the United States to question Brazilian businessman Jose Hawilla, owner and founder of the Brazilian company Traffic
Group. Hawilla pleaded guilty last December to numerous charges in connection with the U.S.-led probe into FIFA corruption. “My requests have been approved,” Romario said. “We will hear Marin in Switzerland, where he is in prison, and Hawilla in the United States, where he is under house arrest.” It wasn’t clear whether the committee had already negotiated access to the two men with authorities in Switzerland or the United States. Marin, who became a confederation vice president after his term as president ended earlier this year, was among seven officials detained in Switzerland after the investigation by U.S. authorities. MILAN - AC Milan coach Sinisa Mihajlovic has dismissed complaints about a Nigel de Jong tackle during Tuesday’s friendly match against Bayern Munich by saying that “football is not ballet.” De Jong found himself involved in another row over his rugged playing style when a tackle on Joshua Kimmich led to the Bayern player being taken off after only 20 minutes. “I didn’t see De Jong’s tackle on Kimmich, but football is not
ballet and fouls are part of the match,” Mihajlovic told reporters after the game, according to Italian media. “For that reason, games such as this one can not be defined as friendlies.” The match, won 3-0 by Bayern, was part of a pre-season tournament in Munich. The incident led to an angry confrontation between De Jong and Bayern coach Pep Guardiola outside the dressing room at halftime, caught by television cameras. De Jong, 30, has earned a fear-

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho feels it will be more difficult for his side to retain the Premier League title with the other contenders having made strong additions to their squads. Chelsea won the title at a canter last season, finishing on 87 points, eight ahead of second-placed Manchester City. “A year ago we got immediately Costa and Fabregas which was a quick reaction to the fact that we didn’t win the title,” Mourinho told Sky Sports. “This year you can see from the reaction of Liverpool, Arsenal Man City, Man United. “They’ve bought strong they’ve bought well. They are trying to make an impact because they couldn’t get the title.” The 52-year-old Mourinho expects a close title race and low

AIDA, the international diving federation, said in a statement that Molchanova had been diving without fins at a depth of 30-40 meters (98-130 feet) off the coast of Formentera island when she failed to resurface on Sunday. Maritime rescue coordinator Miguel Chicon said the operation was “very complicated” because the 53-year-old Russian could have become trapped by weights she was wearing at the time of the dive. A submersible robot was brought in to expand the search on Tuesday. Molchanova was among the most decorated competitors in freediving, a sport in which participants swim as deeply as they can while holding their breath. (ap)

Crews report some progress against huge California wildfire
MIDDLETOWN, California — Firefighters are reporting some progress against a Northern California wildfire that has charred more than 100 square miles (260 square kilometers) of terrain, destroying buildings, threatening many others and sending thousands of residents fleeing. As firefighters and equipment from outside the state poured in to battle the blaze burning about 100 miles (160 kilometers) north of San Francisco, more than 13,000 people were required or urged to leave their homes, vacation cabins and campsites. Firefighting officials said crews made some progress Tuesday with some help from light rain. The blaze was 20 percent contained, but it wasn’t expected to be corralled until at least Monday. Teams were able to build a buffer between the flames and some of the estimated 6,900 homes it threatens. Despite the fire’s growth, no additional homes were consumed outside the two dozen already destroyed. The fire, by far the largest of 11 burning in Northern California, started on July 29 in drought-withered brush that hasn’t burned in years in the Lower Lake area. A cause hasn’t been determined. The National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho, has the wildfire listed as the nation’s highest priority for crews and equipment even as potentially destructive blazes burned in Oregon
and Washington, spokesman Mike Ferris said. He called the fire that has burned 101 square miles (261 square kilometers) “one big monster.” “In Northern California alone, all their resources are committed, and they are having to go outside the geographic area to get resources, whether it’s aircraft or firefighters,” Ferris said. With more than 3,000 firefighters battling the smoky blaze and evacuees seeking shelter, motels were booked up for days within miles. Margot Simpson, a manager at the Red Cross evacuation center set up at Middletown High School, said she hadn’t had any luck finding a room for a person in a wheelchair after searching four of the bigger nearby communities. “I started in the phone book at the top of the list, and I started going down and I got nothing,” she said. Many people not affected by the fires stepped up to help. Tabetha Atwood, the owner of Our Happy Tails Etc., a local doggy bakery, was helping to match frightened dogs with their owners at a command center at
the Moose Lodge in Clearlake Oaks that was serving as a community assistance center. Atwood also had dog treats on hand for people who came by with their pets while other volunteers gave out pillows, apples and piles of French toast to people displaced by the fire. “These are our friends, our family and our neighbors,” she said. By Tuesday afternoon, with 15- to 20mph (24- to 32-kph) winds coming from the northwest, the Moose Lodge itself was being threatened and the people there asked to leave. Layna Rivas of Clearlake Oaks tried to remain calm after checking the latest map showing the wildfire’s overnight progress. It showed the artists’ haven she has spent the last five years building directly in the flames’ path. Rivas was thinking of her baby grand piano in a studio made out of straw bales. “Worst part is I can’t get in to see what’s been damaged or no,” she said. “My heart is heavy at the thought of my once epic view of the valley that had an array of life and colors now grey and lifeless.” (ap)

16 killed in Russia bus collision, more than 50 injured MOSCOW — Russian health officials say two buses have collided in the far east of the country, killing at least 16 people and injuring more than 50 others. The Investigative Committee, the nation’s top investigative agency, said Wednesday’s collision occurred on a highway linking Khabarovsk, which sits on the border with China, and Komsomolsk-on-Amur. The agency has opened a probe into the
alleged violation of traffic rules. Prosecutors said the driver of one of the buses drove into an incoming lane to bypass construction vehicles repairing the road and lost control of the vehicle. Russia’s Health Ministry said 56 people were injured. Ambulances and helicopters have rushed to the site to evacuate the wounded, more than 20 of which were in grave condition. (ap)
LONDON — Five police forces in Britain are investigating sex abuse allegations against the late Edward Heath, as the probe into the former prime minister’s past broadened. Detectives in Wiltshire, London, Kent, Jersey and Hampshire are now investigating. Heath’s name emerged Monday, when Britain’s police watchdog said it would investigate whether police failed to pursue an allegation against him. Wiltshire Police say detectives
and a national child abuse prevention charity have received “a number of calls” following appeals for information. Heath is the latest public figure in Britain to be scrutinized for historic sex abuse allegations. Britain has faced a spate of such revelations since the 2011 death of entertainer Jimmy Savile, when dozens came forward to say he had abused them. INDONESIA Perppu urgently needed to address shortage of candidates in election
“The economic growth in the second quarter was lower than the same period last year and the previous quarter, which was recorded at 4.72 percent,” Head of the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) Suryamin stated on Wednesday. Indonesia’s economy was measured by its gross domestic product (GDP), amounting to Rp2,866.9 trillion based on its current price in the second quarter of 2015 or Rp2,239.3 trillion under its constant price. Suryamin explained that in terms of production, the growth was driven by almost all business sectors, with the highest achieved in the education service sector, which
grew by 12.16 percent. “In terms of expenditures, it was supported by almost all components, with the highest achieved by the household consumption spending component at 4.97 percent,” he affirmed. Indonesia’s economy in the second quarter of 2015 grew by 3.78 percent (quarter-to-quarter) compared to the previous quarter. In terms of production, the highest growth was recorded in the agriculture, forestry, and fishery sectors reaching 10.09 percent, meanwhile in terms of spending, government consumption recorded the highest growth at 32.17 percent.
Indonesia’s economy in the first quarter of 2015 grew 4.70 percent. Production in all business sectors grew except for mining and excavation, which was down 3.58 percent. Spending was driven by household spending that grew by 4.99 percent. “Spatially, Indonesia’s economic structure in the second quarter of 2015 was dominated by provinces in Java and Sumatra,” Suryamin pointed out. Provinces in Java were the largest contributors to the GDP, reaching 58.35 percent, followed by provinces in Sumatra, at 22.31 percent, and Kalimantan, at 8.22 percent. (ant)
JAKARTA - The General Elections Commission (KPU) should postpone the regional head elections in some seven regions as they only have one pair of candidates. The KPU has decided to postpone elections in seven regions to February 2017. The delay was mandated by Law No. 8/2015 on regional elections. According to KPU’s data, the seven regions comprise four districts and three cities. The four districts are Tasikmalaya in West Java; Blitar and Pacitan in East Java; and North Central Timor in East Nusa Tenggara. To change the current Regional Elections Law, the president can issue a government regulation in lieu of law (Perppu). Following this, Chairman of the Election Organization Ethics Council (DKPP) Jimly Asshiddiqie argued that a Perppu is a viable solution to the problem and carries the lowest risk. “Although I do not prefer the president issuing a Perppu,” he remarked. According to Asshiddiqie, the Perppu will provide a solution to the seven regions that only have one pair of candidates. “A delay in holding the regional elections in seven regions will create problems and will be a violation of the people’s rights,” he emphasized. He acknowledged that the Perppu often stirred up a controversy, but the president should arrive at a decision. “Someone should take responsibility. If no one can do it, it will impose on other institutions,” he reiterated. He noted that the president has the constitutional right to issue a Perppu to provide a solu-
LHOKSEUMAWE - Some 100 refugees from Bangladesh being accommodated at Blang Mangat immigration office in Lhokseumawe city, Aceh province, have been repatriated, according to local immigration spokesman Albert Djalius. “We hope that all the Bangladeshi refugees can be repatriated in mid-August 2015,” Djalius stated
on Wednesday. He remarked that some 100 refugees who were stranded in Aceh in early May, this year, had complete immigration documents, and therefore, they were flown back to their country of origin from Kuala Namu Airport in Medan, North Sumatra, on Tuesday. However, he noted that 71 other
refugees are still being accommodated in shelters, awaiting a clear demographic data from the Embassy of Bangladesh to Indonesia in Jakarta. According to Djalius, the repatriation was managed by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), which has been making all the necessary arrangements for
providing accommodations. “The Bangladeshi immigrants will be repatriated gradually, as they are waiting for their documents,” he stated. On June 11, the local authority also repatriated 19 of the 239 Bangladeshi immigrants, who were stranded along with the displaced Rohingyas in North Aceh district.

Israel jails Jewish extremist for 6 months without trial JERUSALEM — Israel has jailed a Jewish extremist for six months without charges or trial, expanding a crackdown against militant Jews and deploying a contentious measure typically used for Palestinians suspected of staging attacks. This was the first time the measure, known as administrative detention, was applied against an Israeli since the crackdown began following a pair of deadly attacks last week. Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon signed an order late Tuesday that jails extremist Mordechai Meyer, from the West Bank settlement of Maaleh Adumim, for six months. A statement from Yaalon’s office
said Meyer, who Israeli media reported to be 18 years old, was being held in connection to “his involvement in violent activities and recent terror attacks.” The ministry would not elaborate on the suspicions against him. But Israeli media said Meyer was suspected of links to attacks against an important church in northern Israel and another in Jerusalem, as well as attacks on Palestinian property. He has previously been banned from the West Bank and Jerusalem, Israeli media also said. The detention intensifies a crackdown on Jewish militancy that came after two deadly attacks last week. (ap)

WASHINGTON - The World Bank unveiled Tuesday a set of new social and environmental rules for its 188 member nations to receive financial assistance. According to the World Bank, the draft framework, under discussion for several years, represents “a major step forward” for the development lender that strengthens its protection of the environment and the world’s poor and vulnerable in its investment projects. In early March, the World Bank
acknowledged that internal reviews had found significant flaws in the way it handles the resettlement of people to make way for development projects. Under the proposed framework, the World Bank will demand that borrowing countries extend labor rights, including for the first time
the rights to collective bargaining and freedom of association. The institution also amended a previous proposal on environmental standards that had raised ire among nongovernmental organizations and other groups in July 2014. Now, the Bank will deem that “offsets” -- actions to compensate for “unavoidable biodiversity impacts” linked to economic development -- should be considered “a last resort” and prohibited in certain
instances. Indigenous peoples affected by projects would need to give “free prior and informed consent” before the projects can proceed, and proposes that in some instances offsets would be prohibited altogether. If prior consent “can’t be shown, the World Bank will not proceed with the aspects of the project relevant to indigenous peoples, it said.
In a joint statement, 19 civil society organizations, including Oxfam and Human Rights Watch, denounced the new World Bank framework, calling it a “dangerous rollback in environmental and social protections.” The proposed rules “will vastly weaken protections for affected communities and the environment at the same time as the bank intends to finance more high-risk projects,” they said. WASHINGTON — The staff of the International Monetary Fund is recommending that China wait until at least October 2016 to join an exclusive club of the world’s top currencies. China wants its currency, the yuan, included in a basket of currencies used in IMF operations along with the U.S. dollar, euro, British pound and Japanese yen. It was hoping the yuan could be added this Jan. 1. The IMF board will consider later this month the staff’s recommendation for a delay until Oct. 1 of next year. China believes it deserves to be included because it boasts the world’s second-biggest economy. But the yuan is not as widely used or freely traded as the other four currencies. The IMF staff said in a report released Tuesday that it was also worried that adding a new currency Jan. 1 might rattle financial markets on the first day of trading next year. There have been estimates by some private economists that the Chinese economy will get a major boost if its currency is added because the IMF seal of approval will encourage more foreign participation in China’s financial markets. Since mid-June, the Chinese stock market has been plunging in value despite efforts by the government to end the free-fall. The currency club China wants to join is known as the IMF’s Special Drawing Rights basket. This is a virtual currency the IMF can use for emergency loans and IMF member countries can use to bolster their own reserves in times of crisis. (ap)

SAN FRANCISCO — Apple is slumping as the usually high-flying tech stock struggles with the burden of raised expectations. The world’s most valuable public company saw its stock price drop for a fifth straight day on Tuesday, falling as much as $5.19, or 4.4 percent, to $113.25 as investors fret over China’s economy and whether Apple can keep growing at the pace it’s maintained over the last few quarters. Apple shares closed Tuesday at $114.64 — down 14 percent since
hitting a record $133.60 in February. That puts Apple in a “correction,” which is Wall Street jargon for price declines of 10 percent or more from a peak. The slide has wiped out more than $96 billion in market value. The stock also dropped below its 200-day moving average, a technical indicator that traders use to gauge momentum. And as a sign of Apple’s outsized role in the market, its decline Tuesday accounted for more than half of the 47-point
drop in the Dow Jones industrial average for the day. Apple is also by far the biggest component in the Standard & Poor’s 500, making up 3.6 percent of the index, which is a benchmark for most mutual funds. Apple sold more than 47 million of its signature iPhones in the last quarter, or 35 percent more than a year earlier. That drove the company’s profit and earnings above Wall Street estimates. That has sent the stock into a decline since Apple reported earnings on July 21. Presidential decree on illegal fishing to be ratified
KUTA - The presidential decree on illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing will be ratified soon by President Joko Widodo, according to Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Susi Pudjiastuti. “The draft has been completed. We only need his signature,” she said on Tuesday. According to Pudjiastuti, the president was urged to ratify the decree because illegal poaching of fish by foreign fishermen has been detrimental to the country.
“This decree is an urgent requirement to deter perpetrators of the crime,” the minister remarked. The regulation is expected to help complete the legal proceedings
related to illegal fishing activities. Pudjiastuti further noted that the presidential decree will serve as the basis for the illegal fishing taskforce, formed by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, to take action against perpetrators of the crime. “This regulation is intended to allow the taskforce to take action against the criminals legally and
formally. The Fisheries Act can be applied directly while capturing them. It is important that the legal processes do not stop in court,” she emphasized. Moreover, the ministry, along with other relevant agencies, has detained dozens of foreign vessels caught fishing in Indonesian territory. Some of them were sunk directly

Four illegal rafting found in Gianyar GIANYAR - The Civil Police of Permitting Department in Gianyar carry out inspection on Wednesday, August 5 on the rafting along Ayung River. In the inspection, they found that four rafting business don’t have the proper permit. They were directly given a warning and reprimand letters. The illegal rafting business are Tukad Rafting owned by Komang Agus Punarbawa, Rejeki Ayung Rafting owned by Ketut Sukayasa, New Gangga Rafting owned by Dewa Ngakan Putu Ganta and Ubud Rafting owned by Ketut Suasnawa. During the inspection, each owner could not show the proper paperwork to the officers. Based on that, the head of Operational Division in Gianyar Civil Police Wayan Suala Susila said that there will be action taken according to the rule and regulation. “We stop the rafting from operating while the owners take care of the permit. They will be also summoned to our office to explain about their conduct,” he said. Suala explained that the inspection has been done for several time. During the previous inspection, a few rafting business also didn’t have any permit. “For the business that cannot show the permit during the previous inspection, we gave the first warning and now the second one. Dozens of cooperative threatened to be liquidated in Badung
MANGUPURA - As having not reported the performance of the cooperative over the years, the Badung Cooperatives, SMEs, Industry and Trade Agency threatened to liquidate dozens of cooperatives in the region. Moreover, his party has sent announcement letter to 30 cooperatives spreading across six subdistricts. “Announcement of the 30 cooperatives to be liquidated is installed in each subdistrict. Cooperatives having been liquidated through the decision of the meeting of members within the past five years amounted to six units,” said I Ketut Karpiana, the Head of the Agency, Tuesday (Aug. 4). According to Karpiana, delivery of the announcement poses an early stage procedures for liquidation of the cooperatives by government with reference to the Law No.25/1992 concerning with Cooperatives; Government Regulation No.17/1994 on the Procedures for Liquidation of Cooperatives; and Ministerial Decree No.269/M/ IX/1994. “We will wait until next
two months. If the cooperatives announced do not respond, we will liquidate them,” he said. Attachment of the announcement on the liquidation of the cooperatives, he said, is based on the reason of inactivity, the absence of activities as mandated by the Cooperatives Law, one of which is implementing annual meeting of the members. Ministerial Regulation No.17 mandates the system and procedures of the cooperative liquidation, at first there will be liquidation by the members and the government. Liquidation by the government is meant to avoid bad influence to healthy cooperatives in the Badung County. “We expect this announcement of liquidation can become an evaluation for the cooperative movement so that in the future the cooperatives can undertake their activities in accordance with the legislation in force,” he said. “Most of the cooperatives are located at hotels in Kuta area. Uighurs deported from Thailand to China remain in detention
BEIJING — Chinese state media say minority Muslim Uighurs (WEE’-gurz) deported from Thailand to China remain in detention while authorities investigate whether some planned to join the Islamic State or other groups in the Middle East. State media also said some of the 109 Uighurs fought with Thai and Chinese police as they were being put on a flight back to China last month out of fear they would be executed. The July 9 repatriations were heavily criticized by the U.N. refugee agency, the United States and others. In Turkey’s capital, Istanbul, protesters ransacked the Thai Consulate. The Global Times newspaper on Wednesday said many had planned to travel from Thailand to Turkey and may have ended up fighting in neighboring Iraq or Syria. Although it has not led to harvest failure, if the paddy plants continue to lack of water, the threat of harvest failure can happen especially in the category of severe drought. Based on the data up to July 2015, the drought rate of paddy plants in Tabanan falls into three categories, namely light, moderate and severe. Light drought occurred in Kerambitan subdistrict covering 36 hectares, Marga subdistrict (7 hectares), East Selemadeg (12 hectares), Tabanan subdistrict (0.8 hectare) and West Selemadeg (2 hectares). Drought of moderate category occurred in Kerambitan subdistrict (4 hectares), while severe category occurred in Kerambitan subdistrict covering 6 hectares and one hectare in Marga subdistrict. Dozens of trains have been blocked from moving due to the accident, while others have been diverted to other routes. The rain eased Wednesday following two days of heavy downpour. India has one of the world’s largest railway networks and carries more than 23 million passengers each day. However, many parts of the vast network are poorly maintained and accidents are common. Thousands of womb cancers prevented by the pill: study
PARIS - The contraceptive pill has prevented some 200,000 cases of womb cancer over the last decade in rich nations alone, according to research published Wednesday. A study in the medical journal The Lancet Oncology found that taking “the pill” over an extended period provided protection against endometrial cancer, which affects the womb. The researchers estimated that in total, over the past 50 years, some 400,000 endometrial cancers were avoided in high-income countries. The anti-cancer benefits persisted for decades after women stopped taking the pill, according to the study, which pooled data on 27,276 women with endometrial cancer in two dozen countries. “Women who use it when they are in their 20s or even younger continue to benefit into their 50s and older, when cancer becomes more common,” noted co-author Valerie Beral, from the University of Oxford. “People used to worry that the pill might cause cancer, but in the long term the pill reduces the risk of getting cancer,” she said in a statement. The study found that every five years of oral contraceptive use reduced the risk by about a quarter. Taking the pill for 10 years, for example, cut the odds of developing endometrial cancer before age 75 from 2.3 to 1.3 cases per 100 users. This held true whether women used the pill in the 1960s, when oestrogen doses in contraceptives were high, or in the 1980s and later, when the doses decreased. Women’s reproductive history and ethnicity did not change the results, which were also substantially the same for women who were overweight, smoked or consumed alcohol. But the researchers stopped short of suggesting that women start taking oral contraceptives as an anti-cancer measure. “The finding is impressive and instructive,” Nicolas Wentzensen and Amy Berrington de Gonzalez, both from the US National Cancer Institute, wrote in a commentary also carried by the journal. But it is too early, they say, to know “whether an overall health benefit of oral contraceptive use exists that warrants specific recommendations for chemoprevention.” Previous research, they point out, has linked oestrogen intake to cardiovascular problems, including strokes and heart attacks due to blood clots. Studies have also linked use of the pill to a slight increase in breast cancer risk. (afp)

But they cautioned it was too early to draw a final conclusion on the potential benefits of fiery fare, and urged further research that may lead to “updated dietary recommendations”. The study, published in The BMJ journal, collected dietary data from nearly 490,000 people, aged 30 to 79, in China. They were enrolled between 2004 and 2008, and their health monitored for an average of seven years. Just over 20,000 participants died in the period. “Compared with participants who ate spicy foods less than once a week, those who consumed spicy foods one or two days a week were at a 10 percent reduced risk of death,” said a statement
from The BMJ. And those who ate spicy foods almost every day, “had a relative 14 percent lower risk of death compared to those who consumed spicy foods less than once a week.” The association was similar in men and women, and stronger in those who did not consume alcohol. Fresh and dried chilli peppers were the most commonly used spices -- and the association was higher with the fresh variety, according to the team led by researchers at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. The answer may be found in an ingredient of spices -- capsaicin, which has previously been suggested to posses anti-obesity, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammation and anti-cancer properties. The team urged “further prospective studies in other populations”, that may
lead to dietary recommendations and “development of functional foods, such as herbal supplements.” In a comment, Kevin McConway of the Open University urged against jumping to conclusions. “If people who eat spicy food more often have lower death rates, that might indeed be caused by the chilli eating, or it might be caused by something different that is related to eating chillis and also, separately, happens to promote health. “Maybe this is something in the way spices are used in Chinese cooking, or related to other things people eat or drink with the spicy food. Maybe it has something to do with the sort of people, in China, who tend to eat more spicy food.” People who ate more chilli were, for example, more likely to live in rural areas. (afp)
Kids’ picky eating can have depression, anxiety links
WASHINGTON - Picky eating among children may not be just a passing phase but could flag potential concerns such as depression and anxiety, a study released Monday found. According to the Duke Medicine report in the journal Pediatrics, more than 20 percent of children aged 2-6 are picky eaters. About 18 percent of those were classified as moderately picky and another three percent as extremely so. It was in these subsets -- kids who are moderately or severely fussy about
the foods they eat -- that scientists found greater occurrence of mental health issues such as clinical depression or anxiety. Since picky eating can also cause poor nutrition and family conflict, the report said, it appears important for parents and medical staff to keep an eye on a risk of underlying emotional issues. “These are children whose eating has become so limited or selective that it’s starting to cause problems,” said lead author Nancy Zucker, director of the Duke Center for Eating Disorders.
“Impairment can take many different forms. It can affect the child’s health, growth, social functioning, and the parent-child relationship. The child can feel like no one believes them, and parents can feel blamed for the problem.” Children whose picky eating becomes a serious challenge also may have what doctors now call “Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder.” Mental health professionals believe they can help some of these children with behavioral therapy over foods that may cause them anxiety. Wanted, an Australian traveler arrested in Jakarta DENPASAR - The Bali Police Crime and Violence team led by Unit Chief Pande Sugiata arrested an Australian traveler, Alexander Patrick Morris, in Kebayoran Residence, Jakarta, Tuesday (Aug. 4). Morris placed on wanted list because he escaped after being sentenced by the judge of the Gianyar District Court related to the annexation case of villa owned by artist Jeremy Thomas. received a request for help of the search and arrest against the wanted convict on behalf of Alexander Patrick Morris in the case of land use without a permit in Gianyar, Saturday (Aug. 1). Furthermore, Directorate of General Criminal and Investigation, Bambang Yugisworo, ordered Pande Sugiata and his team to conduct an investigation related to the presence of the convict.. After conducting an investigation for two days, he got information

If infrastructure is damaged, it will have a boomerang effect on us,” said the royal figure of Ubud. When asked about the statement of the Minister of Tourism that three out of 11 regions must remain ncluded in the KSPN -including Besakih, the man affectionately addressed as Tjok Ace judged that such a decision should be considered by all relevant parties. If the three zones are excluded from the KSPN, it will take longer to process the return. “I think this really needs to be studied again -if the area of Besakih requires clean water, roads or whatever, these needs will be prioritized by the central government if the area is included in the KSPN,” he said. There are a number of requirements for the sanctity of Besakih to be maintained, such as the prohibition of tourist accommodation, he added, the surrounding areas however could still be included in the KSPN. “If it is necessary to set forth prohibitions on the construction of tourist facilities such as hotels or golf courses within so many km from the Temple, then this should due included in the regulations of the KSPN. GIANYAR - Minister of Tourism Arief Yahya has apparently rejected the recommendation that Besakih area, Mount Agung and surrounding areas be excluded from the attachment of Government Regulation No.50/2011 on National Tourism Strategic Area (KSPN). The inclusion of Besaih in the KSPN has been met with opposition from religious leaders that consistently order that Besakih remain zoned as spiritual and not zoned for tourism. The governor of Bali is now expected to take a stand to maintain the sanctity of Besakih. Ida Pedanda Made Gunung affirmed that Besakih belongs to a spiritual zone, not a tourism zone which are used to explore economic-based potential. If Besakih Temple and surroundings remain included in the KSPN, Pedanda worries that this area will become a wide open door to investors wanting to develop tourist accommodations there. “Pedanda really wants an explanation from the Minister of Tourism. If travelers come to Besakih wanting to pray, ok. But if this (Besakih) is included in the KSPN, Pedanda worries that it will open the gateway to the construction of tourist accommodations such as hotels and golf courses,” he said. “Team 11 is made up of academics from various fields of science, representative of Bali’s Provincial Parliament, Hindu Parisadh, and customary village institutions, Bali’s provincial government, and people who work in the field of tourism. We have worked hard and gone through the long processes involving focused group discussion (FGD) with various parties,” he explained. The assessment team then finally formulated their recommendations which they sent to the Ministry of Tourism. “After we sent the recommendation, we met with staff in the Ministry of Tourism in Jakarta who asked for further input. They did not make any kind of decision at that time,” explained Anom. “If the Minister of Tourism rejects our recommendations but is willing to discuss this matter face to face, we are ready to explain our recommendations,” he asserted. Anom hopes that in the future, the central government will discus matters with regional representatives before making national plans, because local people have more insight into their surroundings and how development can be done in a sustainable, ecologically sound way that works in favour of the local communities. Governor of Bali, Made Mangku Pastika when asked about this issue simply said that if Bali does not request a budget to maintain these areas (because they are excluded form the KSPN) then the central government will allocate this budget to other provinces. “Whether this budget is revoked or not is up to us, because after all that’s how working bottom up goes. We can receive this budget by submitting a proposal, if we don’t request such a budget then there will be no funds for us,” he said. Pastika went on to explain that the people of Bali should know that the KSPN is intended to help regions improve and build their tourism destinations, and that everything still depends on each region because proposals are submitted by the regions. In other words, the central government will provide a budget to Bali after regions submits a proposal requesting it. For example, Pastika mentioned that Besakih area is in need of lots of improvements in terms cleanliness, roads, and the creation of security posts, health posts as well as an information centre. “All of these improvements required funding and both the provincial and regency budgets are limited. That’s why we need the central government budget - so we can make these improvements to the area of Besakih,” claimed Pastika. (kmb32)

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

SYDNEY - Pop star Taylor Swift has leapt to the aid of a Sydney theatre company suffering an “artistic emergency” by giving the cast of 70-somethings permission to dance to her chart-topper “Shake it Off”. Sydney’s Belvoir Theatre took to Twitter with the hashtag “greygrey4taytay” to appeal to the American singer for permission to use the song in a play due to open Wednesday night. “I’m facing an artistic emergency I hope you can help with,” theatre director Anne-Louise Sarks tweeted to the singer on Tuesday

KUTA - Two Australian airlines - Virgin Australia and Jetstar - have canceled all flights in and out of the I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar, Bali, as more volcanic ash from Mount Raung flows into flight path. General Manager of the Nugrah Rai’s Angkasa Pura I airport operator Trikora Harjo confirmed the cancelation on Wednesday. Harjo said despite cancelation from two Australian airlines, airport remained open normally. “So far, the airport has operated normally,” he stated. Jetstar cancelled four flights respectively from Bali to Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, and Singapore, he noted. Virgin Australia cancelled 10 flights in and out of the Ngurah
Rai Airport. The flights were respectively to Bali from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth; and from Bali to Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane. Virgin was quoted as saying by Australian media, new.com.au, that the eruption from Mt Raung and unfavorable winds have made for
unsuitable flying conditions, and are urging customers in Bali not to go to Denpasar airport until they have a confirmed rebooking. The unfavorable winds are expected to continue throughout Wednesday. The Bali airport authorities did not issue a Notice to Airmen (Notam) because the flights cancellations were decision of the two airlines. Currently, two airports in East Java, respectively in Banyuwangi and Jember, have been closed as volcanic ash from Mount Raung blows towards south and southwest. The I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali have been
forced to close temporary for some times, affecting a total of 277 domestic and international flights. More than 75 thousand passengers failed to fly due to the cancellations. In the meantime, Tourism Minister Arief Yahya has said the I Gusti Ngurah Rai international airport management lost US$40 thousand per day due to the eruption of Mount Raung that has frequently forced temporary closures of the airport. “Due to the closures of the Ngurah Rai airport, 10 thousand foreign tourists failed to arrive in Bali per day. Moreover on a weekend day,

Assessor Team want to meet Tourism Minister
Team 11, the Assessor of National Tourism Strategic Area (KSPN) Bali, spoke out on Wednesday concerning the Minister of Tourism’s refusal to follow their recommendation to exclude Besakih, Mount Agung and surrounding areas, West Bali National Park (including Menjangan Island and surrounding area) from inclusion in the KSPN. They also suggested that Tahura Ngurah Rai also be excluded from the KSPN of Sanur-Kuta, Nusa Dua and surroundings. According to Secretary of Team 11, Drs. Ec. I Putu Anom, M.Par, the team would like to meet with Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya, to discuss this matter given that Yahya was recently quoted in the media as saying that he rejected the Team 11 recommendations.
