Joey Chestnut wins 10th title, gobbles a record 72 hot dogs NEW YORK — Joey “Jaws” Chestnut gulped, chomped and powered his way to a 10th title on Tuesday, continuing his record-setting reign as the chowing champion at the annual Nathan’s Famous July Fourth hot dog eating contest. Shoving water-soaked buns and wriggling franks into his mouth on a hot, sunny day on the Coney Island boardwalk, he downed 72 dogs and buns in 10 minutes to beat his own record and hoist the Mustard Belt for a 10th time. The San Jose, California, man bested up-and-comer Carmen Cincotti, of Mays Landing, New Jersey, who ate 60 franks and buns on his 24th birthday. Miki Sudo notched a fourth straight win in the women’s competition. The Las Vegas woman ate 41 hot dogs and buns to beat Michelle Lesco of Tucson, Arizona, who downed 32 franks and buns. During the men’s competition, five people were taken into custody for trying to disrupt the event, police said. The people appeared to be attempting to unfold a black banner before police stopped them and took them away. They were taken to a precinct where they were questioned and released, police said. The demonstrators later issued a statement saying they were from a group called Direct Action Everywhere, and want Nathan’s to stop holding the contest. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals members separately had been giving away free vegan hot dogs outside the event, but spokeswoman Tricia Lebkuecher said the people arrested inside weren’t affiliated with PETA. Chestnut has dominated the chowdown throwdown for years, eating 70 franks and buns last year to top his then-record and take back the title from Matt “The Megatoad” Stonie. Actress and internet star Stevie Ryan dead at 33

LOS ANGELES — Stevie Ryan, an actress and comedian who gained fame with impersonations of celebrities on YouTube, has died. She was 33.

Los Angeles County coroner’s spokesman Ed Winter says Ryan died Saturday at her home in Los Angeles. He says her death has been ruled a suicide after the agency performed an autopsy. Ryan had gained fame on YouTube with impersonations of celebrities, including Justin Bieber, Kim Kardashian and Amy Winehouse. She also had a sketch comedy show on VH1, “Stevie TV,” and co-hosted a relationship talk show with Brody Jenner. MILAN — An Italian artist has used his tractor to transform a field near the Italian city of Verona into a giant portrait of Russian President Vladimir Putin ahead of this week’s Group of 20 summit. The 135-meter (443-foot) -wide Putin portrait that artist Dario Gambarin created only can be properly viewed from above due to its scale. Gambarin created similar land portraits of Donald Trump and

Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton during the U.S. presidential race last year. The artist says he doesn’t measure fields before he starts driving, but creates his giant images with a good eye and tractor skills. Gambarin limits his creations to the brief period between the harvest of one crop and the planting of the next, meaning Putin’s portrait will be cut down after a few days. (ap)

Trials over downing of flight MH17 to be held in Netherlands

AMSTERDAM - Suspects in the downing of Malaysian airlines flight MH17 in eastern Ukraine in 2014, in which all 298 people aboard were killed, will be tried in a Dutch court and under Dutch law, the Netherlands’ foreign ministry said on Wednesday. The move to choose the Netherlands was agreed to by the five countries which have been conducting a preliminary criminal investigation. Victims of the disaster, which occurred over territory held by pro-Russia separatists fighting Ukrainian government forces, came from 17 countries, and included 196 Dutch citizens. The Dutch Safety Board, which investigated the cause of the crash, concluded in October 2015 that the plane was shot down by a Russian-made ground-to-air rocket. Moscow, which denies any involvement in the fighting in east-

ern Ukraine, also denies one of its rockets could have been used against MH17. The decision follows attempts, blocked by Russia in 2015, to set up an international court over the incident. The extent to which Russia will cooperate with a Dutch court if prosecutors name Russian suspects or request information is not clear. Wim de Bruin, spokesman for the Netherlands’ national prosecutor’s office, said countries did cooperate

on criminal investigations and had had communication over MH17. The Dutch-led team of international investigators, which also included Australia, Belgium, Malaysia, and Ukraine, concluded in September that the rocket was fired from territory in eastern Ukraine held by pro-Russia separatists. No suspects have been named, though Dutch Chief Prosecutor Fred Westerbeke said last year his office has identified 100 “persons of inter-

est” in the investigation, including those who organized the arrival of the rocket and oversaw its transport from Russia to Ukraine and back. De Bruin said that list has since been further refined but prosecutors were not close to any indictment. Dutch foreign Minister Bert Koenders said Wednesday cooperation among the five investigating countries would continue during the “prosecution phase.” “This cooperation is vital, given the complexity of this case,” Koenders said in a statement. “Flight MH17 was downed in a conflict zone which was the scene of heavy fighting and which is still difficult to access.”

“DISINFORMATION” SEEN Koenders added: “We’re still seeing a great deal of disinformation and attempts to discredit the investigation.” Russia has suggested alternative theories to explain the plane’s downing, including that Ukraine is responsible. Registered as candidates for governor and deputy governor of PDI-P

DENPASAR - The selection of prospective candidates for governor and deputy governor of Bali for the period of 2018-2023 proposed by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) started to be revealed with the registration of two names at the district / municipality to the office of PDI-P Bali on Tuesday (Jul. 4). Although it came as no surprise to many I Wayan Koster and Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati or Cok Ace are now official candidates.

Cok Ace was the first to be registered by PDI-P Gianyar around 10:00 who arrived at the office of the regional representative council (DPD) accompanied by a group from the tourism associations as this senior figure from the Ubud Palace is still serving as Chairman of the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) Bali. He was greeted by the Nawa Sanga selection team led by I Wayan Sutena. Chairman of PDI-P Gianyar, I Made Mahayastra, said that Cok Ace’S registration with the DPD followed a democratic, transparent and accountable selection process in the PDI-P Gianyar. Cok Ace is registered as a prospective candidate for Deputy Governor of Bali based on the result of a meeting at the PDI-P Gianyar on July 1. “He is no stranger to politics. He is the former regent of Gianyar and is also a tourism and cultural expert so the PDI-P is proud to have attracted Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati as the prospective candidate for deputy governor of the PDIP”, he said. Cok Ace gave an analogy of his journey as going to temple. Currently, he said, he is just in the outer most courtyard. He hopes to go into the middle courtyard and then finally to the innermost courtyard. This mustachioed man also gave thanks for the

support extended by PDI-P Gianyar and a number of tourism players who helped usher in his registration. “Our determination is to move forward”, he said. Cok Ace did not however want to speculate about his chances of being able to qualify as prospective candidate for deputy governor from PDI-P. “In terms of mapping, things look solid although there are still one or two districts that are still submitting their candidates and one that has not submitted anyone. Nevertheless, we believe in the wisdom of the mother”, he said. Later that day at around 15:30 Wayan Koster was then registered by the Chairman of PDI-P Bali as prospective candidate for Governor of Bali at the DPD office. The entire district office had chosen this man familiarly known as KBS as the only candidate for governor of Bali from PDI-P. Cok Ace was also present at the registration of KBS

or Koster Bali Satu. Customary, religions, traditional and Balinese cultural nuances were visible during the KBS registration. KBS arrived on foot along with about 500 supporters accompanied by baleganjur gamelan music from three art troupes. The supporters also carried banners reading “Ngiring Sareng-sareng Nyikiang Pikayun, Ngaptiang Mangda Wayan Koster (KBS) Prasida Dados Gubernur Bali Warsa 2018-2023 (Let’s be agreed to support Wayan Koster to be Governor of Bali for the period of 2018-2023). Koster was also greeted at the PDI-P office with semara pegulingan gamelan music when received by the Nawa Sanga Selection Team. Before entering the building, KBS together with Chairman of PDI-P Bali prayed in the temple of DPD led by Ida Shri Bhagavan Putra Natha Nawa Wangsa Pemayun. During the admission registration, banten

on July 2 with the Tawur Balik Sumpah ritual at Seked. This ws followed with a mecaru ritual at the edge of Ulun Danu Batur, ngayat to the mountains and Jati Temple on July 3. On July 5, it was resumed with the procession of presenting pesucian to the deities. On July 6th and 7th the rituals culminate in the procession of returning to Batur. In the afternoon,

there is the closing ceremony that is held at Batu Rupit Temple. On July 8 there is then the pujawali ritual in the territory of Puseh Temple of Batur customary village, Puseh Desa Bonyoh Temple, Puseh Desa Sengkaduan Temple and Puseh Petak Cemeng Temple at Selulung village. HANNOVER - Instead of drinking milk or taking supplements to get adequate amounts of calcium, calcium-rich mineral water is an equally good source, researchers say. “The special feature of mineral water as a source of calcium is as a calorie-free alternative to milk and dairy products,” Theresa Greupner of Leibniz University Hannover in Germany told Reuters Health in an email. “In a world with a steadily growing number of overweight and obese people it is important to reduce the energy intake and to promote alternatives to satisfy the calcium demand apart from high caloric milk and dairy products.” Her team’s study, funded by the Association of German Mineral Water Bottlers, looked at how well the body absorbed calcium in five different products, each containing 300 mg calcium: three types of calcium-rich mineral water, milk and a calcium supplement. Twenty-one men and women participated in the study. There was no difference in how calcium from the five different sources was absorbed, the research-

ers report in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, online June 19. Other minerals in the water did not affect calcium absorption. Most mineral waters list mineralization on the label, and the higher the amount of calcium, the better the water is as a calcium source, Greupner said. A person would need to drink two liters of 500 mg/L mineral water per day, or more than three eight-ounce cups of milk, to meet the German standard daily requirement of 1,000 mg calcium. In the U.S., 1,300 mg/ day of calcium is recommended for adults. It’s well known in Italy that mineral water can be a good source of calcium, Dr. Maria Luisa Brandi of the University of Florence in Italy told Reuters Health in a phone interview. Brandi, who wasn’t involved in the current study, and her colleagues showed in a 2004 study that calcium in mineral water was as well absorbed as calcium in milk. “The concept is well established in medicine,” Brandi said. “We recommend water with high calcium content for osteoporotic patients.” (rtr)

NEW YORK - Providing parents with picture-based instructions - and with dosing tools that closely match the amount of medication needed - may help reduce cases of medication overdoses in children, researchers say. Poorly designed medication labels and dosing tools lead to dosing errors, especially when parents are given large cups for small doses, the study team writes in Pediatrics, June 27. “Parents frequently make errors in dosing medications for their children. We did this study because we wanted to find out how to redesign medication labels and dosing tools to help parents understand dosing instructions better,” lead author Dr. Shonna Yin told Reuters Health in an email. It is very easy to get confused when dosing liquid medications for a child, said Yin, a pediatrician at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City. “To help make sure they give the right dose, parents should ask their doctor or pharmacist which dosing tool is best to use,” she said. The best tool depends on the amount of medication the parent needs to give the child, Yin said. “Using a tool that is too large or too small makes it more likely that a parent will make a

mistake.” The researchers recruited 491 English- and Spanish-speaking parents of children age 8 years or younger, and randomly assigned them to one of four groups, each with a different combination of medication labels and dosing tools including assorted cups and syringes. Parents were given a medication label with instructions in text only, or both text and pictograms, plus dose measuring tools marked only in milliliters (mL) or in both mL and teaspoons. Participants were asked to demonstrate how they’d use the labels and to measure three different dosage amounts using three different tools. About 84 percent of parents made at least one error and almost 30 percent made at least one large error such as doubling the correct dose. There were fewer errors, however, when labels contained both text and pictograms and when dosing cups or syringes were close to and at least as large as the amount of medication needed. For a 2-mL dose, for example, the fewest errors were seen with the 5-mL syringe and for the 7.5-mL dose, the fewest errors were with the 10-mL syringe. (rtr)

Pengotan village shows off sacred baris at BAF Dancers may not have wound at all

DENPASAR — Sacred baris dance or baris gede dance of Pengotan customary village, Bangli, was presented in the 39th Bali Arts Festival (BAF). Initially, this fairly old dance was designed to perform at Angsoka Stage. But eventually, it was moved to Madya Mandala because it involved many dancers. Chief of Pengotan customary village, Wayan Kopok, said there are actually 8 kinds of baris gede commonly staged at pujawali or grandiose ritual. They are baris jangkang, baris jojor, baris dadap, baris presi, baris blongsong, baris prancak, baris buntal, and baris bajra. However, only four kinds of baris dance were staged in the BAF, namely the baris jojor, baris dadap, baris perancak, and baris bajra. “Baris jojor, baris perancak and baris bajra are respectively per-

formed by 16 dancers. While baris dadap is performed by 8 dancers,” he said. According to Kopok, the baris dance is believed to be ilen-ilen of Ida Batara at Tuluk Biyu Temple at Penataran Agung village at Pengotan village. This dance is defined as a symbol of a knight or a soldier. Residents of Pengotan village studied and danced the traditional baris dance so that it can be sustainable until now. “There are a total of eight

kinds of dance. Younger generation known as teruna bunga perform baris jangkang and baris jojor. Baris dadap to baris bajra are performed by bala angkep residents. The married people will change status into krama (active member), and before becoming the member of baris dancers they should get pawintenan ritual. After that, they are allowed to choose the kind of baris dance according to their talent,” he explained. According to Kopok, baris dancers must be physically and mentally pure. They may not even have a wound even though a scar. Since

belonging to sacred dance, the staging must also be started with notification ritual by local priests. Among the existing baris dancers, the baris blongsong can be said to be the most sacred. “Baris blongsong only exists at Pengotan so that it is made very much sacred by customary village. Then, baris bajra serves as the closing of ritual or penyidakarya,” he said. The four baris dances staged in the BAF also have their own distinctive characteristic. Baris jojor, for example, uses the property like kris dagger and shorter spear, with black and yellow edge. Baris

dadap does not use any spear, but the equipment resembles a small boat equipped with pawns. This dance tells about the voyage across the sea with various obstacles, with the accompaniment of traditional song. Baris perancak uses a red spear meaning braveness, and describes the main warrior in belligerent strategy. Meanwhile, the baris bajra carries a spear with a bajra-shaped end. In addition to meaning as closing baris dance, it is also summed up as a foremost knight considering the bajra itself also means a mace denoting the weapon of Bima. (kmb32)

However, location of the construction has not been specified yet, especially the ground breaking, there is no clarity,” he explained. Development planning, he continued, has already been complete. Presentation of the feasibility study at the central level has been done by investors. This will serve as the basis for submitting the

location request to the ministry of transportation. On the other hand, in this case the regent advised that entire planning and implementation should comprehensively pay attention to the issues developing in the community. “Whenever it becomes serious, all the undesirable impact should have been overcome,” he said. Puspaka added if the airport location has been specified, the investors are said to have been ready to conduct an analysis on environmental impact (AMDAL) study. “Later on, the study will be set forth the undesirable things to prevent negative impacts that may occur,” he said. MANILA/MARAWI - The Philippine Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld as constitutional President Rodrigo Duterte’s imposition of 60 days of military rule on a southern island, a ruling that would reinforce unity in the fight against militancy, his spokesman said.

A farmer of Kayuputih, Banjar subdistrict, Nyoman Rauh, said that almost no clove trees are flowering this season. It only shows leaf growth in contrast to a very abundant condition in previous year. It is caused by high rainfall taking place for a long time. “Rainy season is too long, so cloves cannot bloom. Only leaves grow flourishingly,” he said on Monday (Jul. 3). Such production does not only make farmers, especially sharecroppers, frustrated. However, residents who work as middlemen and pickers cannot work. “At the time of harvest, many middlemen are hanging around. But now, there is almost none, very quiet,” he said. In addition, he said that quality of cloves this season is less good. Comparison of the raw and dry flower can no longer be like in the last season, namely 3:1. It is caused by excessive water content. “Now, the water content is high, so the ratio of raw and dry is no longer as it used to be,” he said. Clove price today is quite expensive, above IDR 100,000 per kilogram. Plummeted harvest automatically causes farmers to be unable to enjoy such good news. “The price is quite expensive, but the harvest is like this,” added this farmer of two children. Similar fate is also faced by a farmer of Gitgit village, Sukasada, Made Sukarsa. He told if the season supports, the clove harvest this month is quite a lot and can take place until next October. Head of the Buleleng Agriculture Agency, Nyoman Swatantra, admitted that the region’s superior commodity production has dropped dramatically. Although having no made data collection, according to several field extension officers, it amounts to approximately 70 percent. “So far, we have not calculated it yet, but if we see the condition in the field and refer to the PPL’s report, the production is not like last year,” he said. In addition to season, the production is also influenced by the way of picking on the previous harvest and less maximum maintenance. “At harvest, many leaves at the flower base have fallen out, so it affects the growth of the flower. BEIJING - China invited medical experts from the United States and Germany to help treat dissident Nobel laureate Liu Xiaobo for cancer, a local government announced on Wednesday, in a softening of its stance ahead of this week’s G20 summit in Germany. Liu, 61, was jailed for 11 years in 2009 for “inciting subversion of state power” after he helped write a petition known as “Charter 08” calling for sweeping political reforms. He was recently moved from jail to a hospital to be treated for latestage liver cancer. The hospital, in the northeastern city of Shenyang, made the decision at the request of the family and in consultation with the doctors already treating him, the Shenyang Bureau of Justice said in a short statement on its website. It provided no other details. Officials who picked up the telephone at the hospital said they were unaware

of the case. A source close to Liu’s family said the invitation was a positive step that greatly increased transparency around Liu’s illness and the chance that he would receive the best possible treatment available. “The fact that they specially chose the U.S. and Germany suggests that the authorities are considering allowing Liu to travel to one of these two countries,” the source said, although there were still questions about how the doctors would be chosen and what access they would have. The changing face of tourism in Ubud

Ubud has become a world famous tourist destination based on its wealth of cultural and religious customs and the artistic renaissance that was born from these. The face of tourism in Ubud has certainly changed over the years. At first, foreign visitors were attracted by the elaborate religious ceremonies and associated customs supported by the local kingdom. The incredible displays of colour, sound, scent, carvings, dances and other aspects of what in the west is called art, used to be created solely for religious purposes. Under the influence of foreign artists and access to more varied materials, secular artistic practices began to emerge and soon flourished in Ubud. This in turn attracted more foreign visitors who came to Ubud to see the vast array of art being produced here and to try their hand at some of the local craft techniques. Ubud became then became known as a hotbed of creativity with artists from all over the world being drawn to the general atmosphere that encouraged artistic expression rooted in deeper spiritual meaning. In recent years, it is this spiritual meaning that has come to the forefront of tourism in Ubud. Now yoga and all manner of healing modalities old and new are what many people seek on their journey to this international village. Art and local ceremonies remain important and great food and shopping also play rather central roles in Ubud’s current tourism landscape. Wayan Arka is a 65 year old native to Ubud who has witnessed

these changes first hand. Pak Arka grew up in a a family of farmers who could not afford to send him to school past grade 5. So at 9 years old, Wayan started to study art with his neighbour. He soon met Arie Smit a Dutch painter who had settled in Ubud and who had taken to teaching european style painting to the local youth eventually giving birth to The Young Artist Style. After learning basic painting techniques from Mr. Smit, Wayan diligently worked to perfect them and after some months presented his first finished painting to the foreign artist. Smit was impressed and offered to buy it from the young boy. Wayan had not imagined selling his art work, he was simply presenting it to the foreigner in thanks for the skills and materials that the foreign artist had provided. After some insistence, Wayan finally agreed to take a sum of money in exchange for this painting. Wayan explained that he had trouble sleeping for some weeks after that, as he had never seen that much money before and was confused about what he should do with it. He ended up buying some art materials and so began his career as a “modern traditional

Balinese painter”. Pak Arka has spent the better part of his life painting and bringing artist together (Suamba Artist Group) to sell their works in art shops and taking part in the regular exhibitions that Puri Lukisan organized to support local talent. In the 1980’s, the local government provided very low interest loans to artist groups so that they could buy the materials needed to create their world renown works of art. Mr. Arka, was sent to Jakarta to represent young Balinese artists and eventually served in various community leadership roles associated with art and other customary activities. A few years ago however, as less tourists became interested in buying art and more interested in personal experiences, Mr. Arka and his son decided to turn their home on Jl. Suweta into a home stay. Mr. Arka son who grew up in site different conditions than his father helped to design accommodations suited to contemporary travellers’ needs. They still have an incredible collection of Modern Traditional Balinese paintings in their small gallery but Mr. Arka no longer paints as he has become busy tending to their guests. (kmb)

Pejaten has a new tourist attraction namely ceramics museum. Many people do not know yet about it. It is natural because it was just established four years ago gradually. Visitors to the museum named Tantri only reach tens of people. More foreign travelers are recorded. Aside from having a look, they can also practice the making of ceramics. The result can be taken home, so that Pejaten can still be remembered. Putu Oka Mahendra, founder of the Tantri Museum of Ceramics, said that the idea of ??establishing the museum actually emerged in the 1980s. At that time, his father served as headman of Pejaten. The idea was then materialized in 2011. Oka Mahendra said that ceramics and pottery or products made from clay are synonymous with Pejaten village. These crafts have been supporting the life of local community since the beginning. “In the past around in the 1970s, this village was a barren place. The existing agricultural land available was insufficient. Then, pottery crafts helped support the people here,” he said. In the next decade, around 1985, the ceramics and pottery industry at the village was growing. It was in line with the introduction of the heating technique at high temperatures by a Dutch guest stopping at the village. With the technique, people could produce much higher quality ceramics and pottery. This former legislator of Tabanan in the period of 2009-2014 said that incoming guests do not only have a look at the collection of ceramics, but also see the process of making ceramics from raw material processing, manufacturing to finishing processes. In harmony with the passage of time, Oka Mahendra said that many domestic and foreign travelers then come to Pejaten village especially to see the making of ceramics. “The visit is still dominated by foreign travelers from Europe with an average of 30 people per day, while domestic consists of 20 people,” he explained. Admittedly, the development of Pejaten ceramics has started to increase. It is indicated by high demand for the goods, especially from hotels and restaurants. Definitely this condition encourages the growth of ceramic artisans. Unfortunately, amid such development the artisans are faced with raw material constraint. Not infrequently they must be in line to get ready-to-used materials. “Our raw materials are brought in from Jakarta,” he explained. Nevertheless, together with local residents he is currently conducting an area arrangement to support the existence of the ceramic museum. N.Korea says its ICBM can carry nuclear warhead; U.S. calls for global action

SEOUL - North Korea said on Wednesday its newly developed intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) can carry a large nuclear warhead, triggering a call by Washington for global action to hold it accountable for pursuing nuclear weapons.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. Defense Department said it had concluded that North Korea test-launched an ICBM on Tuesday, which some experts now believe had the range to reach the U.S. state of Alaska as well as parts of the mainland United States. U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the test, on the eve of the U.S. Independence Day holiday, represented “a new escalation of the threat” to the United States and its allies, and vowed to take stronger measures. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said the test completed his country’s strategic weapons capability that includes atomic and hydrogen bombs and ICBMs, the state KCNA news agency said. Pyongyang would not negotiate with the United States to give up those weapons until Washington abandons its hostile policy against the North, KCNA quoted Kim as saying. “He, with a broad smile on his face, told officials, scientists and technicians that the U.S. would be displeased ... as it was given a ‘package of gifts’ on its ‘Independence Day’,” KCNA said. Kim ordered them to “frequently send big and small ‘gift packages’ to the Yankees,” it added. The foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab emirates, Egypt and Bahrain are due to meet in Cairo to discuss Qatar’s reply to 13 demands they sent to Qatar in return for the lifting sanctions imposed last month. The dispute revolves around allegations that Qatar supports Islamist militants, including the Muslim Brotherhood, which has been designated a terrorist organisation by Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Egypt. Qatar denies it supports terrorism and says Arab countries want to control its foreign policy. Qatari Foreign Minister Sheik Mohammed bin Abdulrahman alThani said at a joint news conference with his German counterpart on Tuesday that its response was “given in goodwill and good initiative for a constructive solution”, but insisted that Doha would not compromise on its sovereignty. Indonesia hopes for additional $10 bln inflows after S&P upgrade, president says

JAKARTA - Indonesia is hoping for additional inflows worth $10 billion from pension funds and other institutional investors over the next two years following Standard & Poor’s upgrade of its credit rating to investment grade, President Joko Widodo told Reuters. The government will also ease foreign ownership restrictions on certain industry sectors in August, Widodo said in an interview at the presidential palace in Jakarta on Monday.

For the first time in almost 20 years, Indonesia is rated investment grade by all three major rating agencies after S&P on May 19 raised its outlook to ‘BBB-’ from ‘BB+’, matching the ratings already awarded by Fitch and Moody’s. The upgrade was “very important” because it would encourage more capital inflows and reduce borrowing costs, said Widodo, a former Jakarta governor who was elected to lead Southeast Asia’s biggest economy in 2014. “Now the pension funds look to Indonesia,” he said,

adding that some of the money will go into the country’s stock and bond markets. “After that the companies here can take and invest to the real sector, to the infrastructure, to the factory.” While growth in Indonesia’s gross domestic product has slowed from a peak of more than 6 percent several years ago to around 5 percent due to a commodity downturn, its vast domestic market is still seen as an engine of growth. Despite the fracture, the team doctor said no surgery was required and there was no nerve damage. Race jury president Philippe Marien had earlier told reporters Sagan would play no further part in the Tour. “Peter Sagan is disqualified from the 2017 Tour de France after today’s tumultuous sprint in Vittel,” he said. Sagan kicked out of Tour, injured Cavendish withdraws

VITTEL - World champion Peter Sagan was kicked out of the Tour de France on Tuesday after sending Mark Cavendish crashing to the ground in a hectic finale to the fourth stage, sending shockwaves through the three-week cycling extravaganza. Cavendish broke his shoulder blade in the crash and has withdrawn from the Tour, his Dimension Data team told Reuters. Sagan’s German team BoraHansgrohe has appealed against the decision of the race jury to throw the Slovak out of the Tour. French champion Arnaud Demare won the stage, a 207.5-km ride from Mondorf-les-Bains, Luxembourg, but all the drama took place just behind him in the final stretch of the race. Sagan appeared to knock Cavendish off balance with an extended elbow as the Briton was trying to force his way between him and the

safety barrier, and Cavendish was sent crashing heavily to the ground. The Briton went to hospital for checks on his wrist and collarbone. Despite the fracture, the team doctor said no surgery was required and there was no nerve damage. Race jury president Philippe Marien had earlier told reporters Sagan would play no further part in the Tour. “Peter Sagan is disqualified from the 2017 Tour de France after today’s tumultuous sprint in Vittel,” he said. Marien cited Article 12 of the International Cycling Union (UCI) rules, which says any rider making

a wilful obstruction “against one of the 1st 10 riders placed” faces elimination. But Sagan’s outfit want him reinstated, saying: “The team disagrees with the decision and protested it officially. “Peter Sagan rejected to have caused, or in any way intended to cause, the crash of Mark Cavendish on the final 200m of the stage. LONDON - It was a short and sweet introduction to this year’s Wimbledon for Novak Djokovic who breezed into the second round when opponent Martin Klizan retired injured after the first set of their match on Tuesday. N.Korea says its ICBM can carry nuclear warhead; U.S. calls for global action

SEOUL - North Korea said on Wednesday its newly developed intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) can carry a large nuclear warhead, triggering a call by Washington for global action to hold it accountable for pursuing nuclear weapons.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. Defense Department said it had concluded that North Korea test-launched an ICBM on Tuesday, which some experts now believe had the range to reach the U.S. state of Alaska as well as parts of the mainland United States. U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the test, on the eve of the U.S. Independence Day holiday, represented “a new escalation of the threat” to the United States and its allies, and vowed to take stronger measures. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said the test completed his country’s strategic weapons capability that includes atomic and hydrogen bombs and ICBMs, the state KCNA news agency said. Pyongyang would not negotiate with the United States to give up those weapons until Washington abandons its hostile policy against the North, KCNA quoted Kim as saying. “He, with a broad smile on his face, told officials, scientists and technicians that the U.S. would be displeased ... as it was given a ‘package of gifts’ on its ‘Independence Day’,” KCNA said. Kim ordered them to “frequently send big and small ‘gift packages’ to the Yankees,” it added. A 2015 U.N. document estimated that more than 50,000 North Korean workers were overseas earning currencies for the regime, with the vast majority in China and Russia. Gulf media predict more sanctions on Qatar DUBAI - Qatar faces further isolation and possible expulsion from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) if its response to a list of demands made nearly two weeks ago is not satisfactory, state-backed Gulf media said on Wednesday. The foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab emirates, Egypt and Bahrain are due to meet in Cairo to discuss Qatar’s reply to 13 demands they sent to Qatar in return for the lifting sanctions imposed last month. The dispute revolves around allegations that Qatar supports Islamist militants, including the Muslim Brotherhood, which has been designated a terrorist organisation by Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Egypt. Qatar denies it supports terrorism and says Arab countries want to control its foreign policy. Qatari Foreign Minister Sheik Mohammed bin Abdulrahman alThani said at a joint news conference with his German counterpart on Tuesday that its response was “given in goodwill and good initiative for a constructive solution”, but insisted that Doha would not compromise on its sovereignty. Indonesia hopes for additional $10 bln inflows after S&P upgrade, president says

JAKARTA - Indonesia is hoping for additional inflows worth $10 billion from pension funds and other institutional investors over the next two years following Standard & Poor’s upgrade of its credit rating to investment grade, President Joko Widodo told Reuters. The government will also ease foreign ownership restrictions on certain industry sectors in August, Widodo said in an interview at the presidential palace in Jakarta on Monday.

For the first time in almost 20 years, Indonesia is rated investment grade by all three major rating agencies after S&P on May 19 raised its outlook to ‘BBB-’ from ‘BB+’, matching the ratings already awarded by Fitch and Moody’s. The upgrade was “very important” because it would encourage more capital inflows and reduce borrowing costs, said Widodo, a former Jakarta governor who was elected to lead Southeast Asia’s biggest economy in 2014. “Now the pension funds look to Indonesia,” he said,

adding that some of the money will go into the country’s stock and bond markets. “After that the companies here can take and invest to the real sector, to the infrastructure, to the factory.” While growth in Indonesia’s gross domestic product has slowed from a peak of more than 6 percent several years ago to around 5 percent due to a commodity downturn, its vast domestic market is still seen as an engine of growth. Foreign companies have complained that vested interests are blocking them from gaining more access to the country of 250 million people, at a time when neighbours such as Vietnam are actively courting investment dollars. A survey published on Wednesday suggested Britain’s economy probably expanded at a quarterly pace of 0.4 percent in April-June. But its business expectations component tumbled to levels not seen since just after the June 2016 vote to leave the EU.

Some BoE officials say the consumer drag on the economy is likely to be offset by higher exports and investment. But the IHS Markit/CIPS UK Services PMI edged down to a four-month low of 53.4 in June from 53.8 in May, just shy of a forecast for 53.5 in a Reuters poll of economists. “This weaker reading pours a degree of a cold water on the latest hawkish messages emanating from the Bank of England,” said James Smith at ING. The final composite PMI for the euro zone, seen as a good growth indicator, was 56.3 in June, down from May’s 56.8 but comfortably beating a flash estimate of 55.7 and well into growth levels above 50. Earlier PMIs from the bloc’s big four economies of Germany, France, Spain and Italy showed faster growth in the second quarter as a whole. Britain’s potential for being out of step can also be seen in monetary policy. The changing face of tourism in Ubud

Ubud has become a world famous tourist destination based on its wealth of cultural and religious customs and the artistic renaissance that was born from these. The face of tourism in Ubud has certainly changed over the years. At first, foreign visitors were attracted by the elaborate religious ceremonies and associated customs supported by the local kingdom. The incredible displays of colour, sound, scent, carvings, dances and other aspects of what in the west is called art, used to be created solely for religious purposes. Under the influence of foreign artists and access to more varied materials, secular artistic practices began to emerge and soon flourished in Ubud. This in turn attracted more foreign visitors who came to Ubud to see the vast array of art being produced here and to try their hand at some of the local craft techniques. Ubud became then became known as a hotbed of creativity with artists from all over the world being drawn to the general atmosphere that encouraged artistic expression rooted in deeper spiritual meaning. In recent years, it is this spiritual meaning that has come to the forefront of tourism in Ubud. Now yoga and all manner of healing modalities old and new are what many people seek on their journey to this international village. Art and local ceremonies remain important and great food and shopping also play rather central roles in Ubud’s current tourism landscape. Wayan Arka is a 65 year old native to Ubud who has witnessed

these changes first hand. Pak Arka grew up in a a family of farmers who could not afford to send him to school past grade 5. So at 9 years old, Wayan started to study art with his neighbour. He soon met Arie Smit a Dutch painter who had settled in Ubud and who had taken to teaching european style painting to the local youth eventually giving birth to The Young Artist Style. After learning basic painting techniques from Mr. Smit, Wayan diligently worked to perfect them and after some months presented his first finished painting to the foreign artist. Smit was impressed and offered to buy it from the young boy. Wayan had not imagined selling his art work, he was simply presenting it to the foreigner in thanks for the skills and materials that the foreign artist had provided. After some insistence, Wayan finally agreed to take a sum of money in exchange for this painting. Wayan explained that he had trouble sleeping for some weeks after that, as he had never seen that much money before and was confused about what he should do with it. He ended up buying some art materials and so began his career as a “modern traditional

Mr. Arka son who grew up in site different conditions than his father helped to design accommodations suited to contemporary travellers’ needs. They still have an incredible collection of Modern Traditional Balinese paintings in their small gallery but Mr. Arka no longer paints as he has become busy tending to their guests. (kmb)

Pejaten has a new tourist attraction namely ceramics museum. Many people do not know yet about it. It is natural because it was just established four years ago gradually. Visitors to the museum named Tantri only reach tens of people. More foreign travelers are recorded. Aside from having a look, they can also practice the making of ceramics. The result can be taken home, so that Pejaten can still be remembered. Putu Oka Mahendra, founder of the Tantri Museum of Ceramics, said that the idea of ??establishing the museum actually emerged in the 1980s. At that time, his father served as headman of Pejaten. Admittedly, the development of Pejaten ceramics has started to increase. It is indicated by high demand for the goods, especially from hotels and restaurants. Definitely this condition encourages the growth of ceramic artisans. Unfortunately, amid such development the artisans are faced with raw material constraint. Not infrequently they must be in line to get ready-to-used materials. “Our raw materials are brought in from Jakarta,” he explained. Nevertheless, together with local residents he is currently conducting an area arrangement to support the existence of the ceramic museum. MANILA/MARAWI - The Philippine Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld as constitutional President Rodrigo Duterte’s imposition of 60 days of military rule on a southern island, a ruling that would reinforce unity in the fight against militancy, his spokesman said.

A farmer of Kayuputih, Banjar subdistrict, Nyoman Rauh, said that almost no clove trees are flowering this season. It only shows leaf growth in contrast to a very abundant condition in previous year. It is caused by high rainfall taking place for a long time. “Rainy season is too long, so cloves cannot bloom. Only leaves grow flourishingly,” he said on Monday (Jul. 3). Such production does not only make farmers, especially sharecroppers, frustrated. However, residents who work as middlemen and pickers cannot work. “At the time of harvest, many middlemen are hanging around. But now, there is almost none, very quiet,” he said. In addition, he said that quality of cloves this season is less good. Comparison of the raw and dry flower can no longer be like in the last season, namely 3:1. It is caused by excessive water content. “Now, the water content is high, so the ratio of raw and dry is no longer as it used to be,” he said. Clove price today is quite expensive, above IDR 100,000 per kilogram. Plummeted harvest automatically causes farmers to be unable to enjoy such good news. “The price is quite expensive, but the harvest is like this,” added this farmer of two children. BEIJING - China invited medical experts from the United States and Germany to help treat dissident Nobel laureate Liu Xiaobo for cancer, a local government announced on Wednesday, in a softening of its stance ahead of this week’s G20 summit in Germany. Liu, 61, was jailed for 11 years in 2009 for “inciting subversion of state power” after he helped write a petition known as “Charter 08” calling for sweeping political reforms. He was recently moved from jail to a hospital to be treated for latestage liver cancer. The hospital, in the northeastern city of Shenyang, made the decision at the request of the family and in consultation with the doctors already treating him, the Shenyang Bureau of Justice said in a short statement on its website. It provided no other details. Officials who picked up the telephone at the hospital said they were unaware

of the case. A source close to Liu’s family said the invitation was a positive step that greatly increased transparency around Liu’s illness and the chance that he would receive the best possible treatment available. “The fact that they specially chose the U.S. and Germany suggests that the authorities are considering allowing Liu to travel to one of these two countries,” the source said, although there were still questions about how the doctors would be chosen and what access they would have. HANNOVER - Instead of drinking milk or taking supplements to get adequate amounts of calcium, calcium-rich mineral water is an equally good source, researchers say. “The special feature of mineral water as a source of calcium is as a calorie-free alternative to milk and dairy products,” Theresa Greupner of Leibniz University Hannover in Germany told Reuters Health in an email. “In a world with a steadily growing number of overweight and obese people it is important to reduce the energy intake and to promote alternatives to satisfy the calcium demand apart from high caloric milk and dairy products.” Her team’s study, funded by the Association of German Mineral Water Bottlers, looked at how well the body absorbed calcium in five different products, each containing 300 mg calcium: three types of calcium-rich mineral water, milk and a calcium supplement. Twenty-one men and women participated in the study. There was no difference in how calcium from the five different sources was absorbed, the research-

ers report in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, online June 19. Other minerals in the water did not affect calcium absorption. Most mineral waters list mineralization on the label, and the higher the amount of calcium, the better the water is as a calcium source, Greupner said. A person would need to drink two liters of 500 mg/L mineral water per day, or more than three eight-ounce cups of milk, to meet the German standard daily requirement of 1,000 mg calcium. In the U.S., 1,300 mg/ day of calcium is recommended for adults. It’s well known in Italy that mineral water can be a good source of calcium, Dr. Maria Luisa Brandi of the University of Florence in Italy told Reuters Health in a phone interview. Brandi, who wasn’t involved in the current study, and her colleagues showed in a 2004 study that calcium in mineral water was as well absorbed as calcium in milk. “The concept is well established in medicine,” Brandi said. “We recommend water with high calcium content for osteoporotic patients.” (rtr)

NEW YORK - Providing parents with picture-based instructions - and with dosing tools that closely match the amount of medication needed - may help reduce cases of medication overdoses in children, researchers say. Poorly designed medication labels and dosing tools lead to dosing errors, especially when parents are given large cups for small doses, the study team writes in Pediatrics, June 27. “Parents frequently make errors in dosing medications for their children. We did this study because we wanted to find out how to redesign medication labels and dosing tools to help parents understand dosing instructions better,” lead author Dr. Shonna Yin told Reuters Health in an email. It is very easy to get confused when dosing liquid medications for a child, said Yin, a pediatrician at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City. “To help make sure they give the right dose, parents should ask their doctor or pharmacist which dosing tool is best to use,” she said. The best tool depends on the amount of medication the parent needs to give the child, Yin said. “Using a tool that is too large or too small makes it more likely that a parent will make a

mistake.” The researchers recruited 491 English- and Spanish-speaking parents of children age 8 years or younger, and randomly assigned them to one of four groups, each with a different combination of medication labels and dosing tools including assorted cups and syringes. Parents were given a medication label with instructions in text only, or both text and pictograms, plus dose measuring tools marked only in milliliters (mL) or in both mL and teaspoons. Participants were asked to demonstrate how they’d use the labels and to measure three different dosage amounts using three different tools. About 84 percent of parents made at least one error and almost 30 percent made at least one large error such as doubling the correct dose. There were fewer errors, however, when labels contained both text and pictograms and when dosing cups or syringes were close to and at least as large as the amount of medication needed. For a 2-mL dose, for example, the fewest errors were seen with the 5-mL syringe and for the 7.5-mL dose, the fewest errors were with the 10-mL syringe. (rtr)

Pengotan village shows off sacred baris at BAF Dancers may not have wound at all

DENPASAR — Sacred baris dance or baris gede dance of Pengotan customary village, Bangli, was presented in the 39th Bali Arts Festival (BAF). Initially, this fairly old dance was designed to perform at Angsoka Stage. But eventually, it was moved to Madya Mandala because it involved many dancers. Chief of Pengotan customary village, Wayan Kopok, said there are actually 8 kinds of baris gede commonly staged at pujawali or grandiose ritual. They are baris jangkang, baris jojor, baris dadap, baris presi, baris blongsong, baris prancak, baris buntal, and baris bajra. However, only four kinds of baris dance were staged in the BAF, namely the baris jojor, baris dadap, baris perancak, and baris bajra. “Baris jojor, baris perancak and baris bajra are respectively per-

formed by 16 dancers. While baris dadap is performed by 8 dancers,” he said. According to Kopok, the baris dance is believed to be ilen-ilen of Ida Batara at Tuluk Biyu Temple at Penataran Agung village at Pengotan village. This dance is defined as a symbol of a knight or a soldier. Residents of Pengotan village studied and danced the traditional baris dance so that it can be sustainable until now. “There are a total of eight

kinds of dance. Younger generation known as teruna bunga perform baris jangkang and baris jojor. Baris dadap to baris bajra are performed by bala angkep residents. The married people will change status into krama (active member), and before becoming the member of baris dancers they should get pawintenan ritual. After that, they are allowed to choose the kind of baris dance according to their talent,” he explained. According to Kopok, baris dancers must be physically and mentally pure. They may not even have a wound even though a scar. Since

Among the existing baris dancers, the baris blongsong can be said to be the most sacred. “Baris blongsong only exists at Pengotan so that it is made very much sacred by customary village. This dance tells about the voyage across the sea with various obstacles, with the accompaniment of traditional song. Baris perancak uses a red spear meaning braveness, and describes the main warrior in belligerent strategy. Meanwhile, the baris bajra carries a spear with a bajra-shaped end. In addition to meaning as closing baris dance, it is also summed up as a foremost knight considering the bajra itself also means a mace denoting the weapon of Bima. (kmb32)

SINGARAJA — Ground breaking of the airport construction in the North Bali International Airport is rumored to take place in August 2017. Moreover, this information has surfaced to the public. However, Regional Secretary of Buleleng, Dewa Ketut Puspaka, even mentioned there is no clarity yet as location of the construction has not been specified. Puspaka said on Monday (Jul. 3), according to the study, the airport construction is planned to lead to Kubutambahan area. However, there is not exact clarity about the location. It remains to await information from central government through the ministry of transportation. “So far, there are two investors ready to invest for this development, namely PT Bali International Airport and PT Pembangunan Bali Mandiri. In accordance with information, they have agreed to support together in the development, so it is not just wishful thinking. However, location of the construction has not been specified yet, especially the ground breaking, there is no clarity,” he explained. Development planning, he continued, has already been complete. Presentation of the feasibility study at the central level has been done by investors. This will serve as the basis for submitting the

location request to the ministry of transportation. On the other hand, in this case the regent advised that entire planning and implementation should comprehensively pay attention to the issues developing in the community. “Whenever it becomes serious, all the undesirable impact should have been overcome,” he said. DENPASAR - The selection of prospective candidates for governor and deputy governor of Bali for the period of 2018-2023 proposed by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) started to be revealed with the registration of two names at the district / municipality to the office of PDI-P Bali on Tuesday (Jul. 4). Although it came as no surprise to many I Wayan Koster and Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati or Cok Ace are now official candidates.

Cok Ace was the first to be registered by PDI-P Gianyar around 10:00 who arrived at the office of the regional representative council (DPD) accompanied by a group from the tourism associations as this senior figure from the Ubud Palace is still serving as Chairman of the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) Bali. He was greeted by the Nawa Sanga selection team led by I Wayan Sutena. Chairman of PDI-P Gianyar, I Made Mahayastra, said that Cok Ace’S registration with the DPD followed a democratic, transparent and accountable selection process in the PDI-P Gianyar. Cok Ace is registered as a prospective candidate for Deputy Governor of Bali based on the result of a meeting at the PDI-P Gianyar on July 1. “He is no stranger to politics. He is the former regent of Gianyar and is also a tourism and cultural expert so the PDI-P is proud to have attracted Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati as the prospective candidate for deputy governor of the PDIP”, he said. Cok Ace gave an analogy of his journey as going to temple. Currently, he said, he is just in the outer most courtyard. He hopes to go into the middle courtyard and then finally to the innermost courtyard. This mustachioed man also gave thanks for the

support extended by PDI-P Gianyar and a number of tourism players who helped usher in his registration. “Our determination is to move forward”, he said. Cok Ace did not however want to speculate about his chances of being able to qualify as prospective candidate for deputy governor from PDI-P. “In terms of mapping, things look solid although there are still one or two districts that are still submitting their candidates and one that has not submitted anyone. Nevertheless, we believe in the wisdom of the mother”, he said. Later that day at around 15:30 Wayan Koster was then registered by the Chairman of PDI-P Bali as prospective candidate for Governor of Bali at the DPD office. The entire district office had chosen this man familiarly known as KBS as the only candidate for governor of Bali from PDI-P. Cok Ace was also present at the registration of KBS

or Koster Bali Satu. Customary, religions, traditional and Balinese cultural nuances were visible during the KBS registration. KBS arrived on foot along with about 500 supporters accompanied by baleganjur gamelan music from three art troupes. The supporters also carried banners reading “Ngiring Sareng-sareng Nyikiang Pikayun, Ngaptiang Mangda Wayan Koster (KBS) Prasida Dados Gubernur Bali Warsa 2018-2023 (Let’s be agreed to support Wayan Koster to be Governor of Bali for the period of 2018-2023). Koster was also greeted at the PDI-P office with semara pegulingan gamelan music when received by the Nawa Sanga Selection Team. Before entering the building, KBS together with Chairman of PDI-P Bali prayed in the temple of DPD led by Ida Shri Bhagavan Putra Natha Nawa Wangsa Pemayun. During the admission registration, banten

Thousands of Batur customary villagers walk for kilometers explained that this yearly ritual involves carrying the deities from Ulun Danu Batur Temple to Penataran Jati Temple as part of a series of pujawali or ceremonies, the peak of which falls on Thursday (Jul 6) this year. Jero Gede Batur Alitan said that another procession will take place on July 7th when resident will accompany the deities back to Ulun Danu Batur Temple. Head of the organizing committee, Jero Wijaya, said that this series of the rituals at Jati Temple started

on July 2 with the Tawur Balik Sumpah ritual at Seked. This ws followed with a mecaru ritual at the edge of Ulun Danu Batur, ngayat to the mountains and Jati Temple on July 3. On July 5, it was resumed with the procession of presenting pesucian to the deities. On July 6th and 7th the rituals culminate in the procession of returning to Batur. In the afternoon,

there is the closing ceremony that is held at Batu Rupit Temple. On July 8 there is then the pujawali ritual in the territory of Puseh Temple of Batur customary village, Puseh Desa Bonyoh Temple, Puseh Desa Sengkaduan Temple and Puseh Petak Cemeng Temple at Selulung village. On July 11, the deities will be presented with the closing ceremony at Puseh Temple. (kmb40)

Joey Chestnut wins 10th title, gobbles a record 72 hot dogs NEW YORK — Joey “Jaws” Chestnut gulped, chomped and powered his way to a 10th title on Tuesday, continuing his record-setting reign as the chowing champion at the annual Nathan’s Famous July Fourth hot dog eating contest. Shoving water-soaked buns and wriggling franks into his mouth on a hot, sunny day on the Coney Island boardwalk, he downed 72 dogs and buns in 10 minutes to beat his own record and hoist the Mustard Belt for a 10th time. The San Jose, California, man bested up-and-comer Carmen Cincotti, of Mays Landing, New Jersey, who ate 60 franks and buns on his 24th birthday. Miki Sudo notched a fourth straight win in the women’s competition. The Las Vegas woman ate 41 hot dogs and buns to beat Michelle Lesco of Tucson, Arizona, who downed 32 franks and buns. During the men’s competition, five people were taken into custody for trying to disrupt the event, police said. The people appeared to be attempting to unfold a black banner before police stopped them and took them away. They were taken to a precinct where they were questioned and released, police said. The demonstrators later issued a statement saying they were from a group called Direct Action Everywhere, and want Nathan’s to stop holding the contest. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals members separately had been giving away free vegan hot dogs outside the event, but spokeswoman Tricia Lebkuecher said the people arrested inside weren’t affiliated with PETA. Chestnut has dominated the chowdown throwdown for years, eating 70 franks and buns last year to top his then-record and take back the title from Matt “The Megatoad” Stonie. LOS ANGELES — Stevie Ryan, an actress and comedian who gained fame with impersonations of celebrities on YouTube, has died. She was 33.

Los Angeles County coroner’s spokesman Ed Winter says Ryan died Saturday at her home in Los Angeles. He says her death has been ruled a suicide after the agency performed an autopsy. Ryan had gained fame on YouTube with impersonations of celebrities, including Justin Bieber, Kim Kardashian and Amy Winehouse. She also had a sketch comedy show on VH1, “Stevie TV,” and co-hosted a relationship talk show with Brody Jenner. MILAN — An Italian artist has used his tractor to transform a field near the Italian city of Verona into a giant portrait of Russian President Vladimir Putin ahead of this week’s Group of 20 summit. The 135-meter (443-foot) -wide Putin portrait that artist Dario Gambarin created only can be properly viewed from above due to its scale. Gambarin created similar land portraits of Donald Trump and

The artist says he doesn’t measure fields before he starts driving, but creates his giant images with a good eye and tractor skills. Trials over downing of flight MH17 to be held in Netherlands

AMSTERDAM - Suspects in the downing of Malaysian airlines flight MH17 in eastern Ukraine in 2014, in which all 298 people aboard were killed, will be tried in a Dutch court and under Dutch law, the Netherlands’ foreign ministry said on Wednesday. The move to choose the Netherlands was agreed to by the five countries which have been conducting a preliminary criminal investigation. Victims of the disaster, which occurred over territory held by pro-Russia separatists fighting Ukrainian government forces, came from 17 countries, and included 196 Dutch citizens. The Dutch Safety Board, which investigated the cause of the crash, concluded in October 2015 that the plane was shot down by a Russian-made ground-to-air rocket. Moscow, which denies any involvement in the fighting in east-

ern Ukraine, also denies one of its rockets could have been used against MH17. The decision follows attempts, blocked by Russia in 2015, to set up an international court over the incident. The extent to which Russia will cooperate with a Dutch court if prosecutors name Russian suspects or request information is not clear. Wim de Bruin, spokesman for the Netherlands’ national prosecutor’s office, said countries did cooperate

on criminal investigations and had had communication over MH17. The Dutch-led team of international investigators, which also included Australia, Belgium, Malaysia, and Ukraine, concluded in September that the rocket was fired from territory in eastern Ukraine held by pro-Russia separatists. No suspects have been named, though Dutch Chief Prosecutor Fred Westerbeke said last year his office has identified 100 “persons of inter-

est” in the investigation, including those who organized the arrival of the rocket and oversaw its transport from Russia to Ukraine and back. De Bruin said that list has since been further refined but prosecutors were not close to any indictment. Dutch foreign Minister Bert Koenders said Wednesday cooperation among the five investigating countries would continue during the “prosecution phase.” “This cooperation is vital, given the complexity of this case,” Koenders said in a statement. “Flight MH17 was downed in a conflict zone which was the scene of heavy fighting and which is still difficult to access.”

“DISINFORMATION” SEEN Koenders added: “We’re still seeing a great deal of disinformation and attempts to discredit the investigation.” Russia has suggested alternative theories to explain the plane’s downing, including that Ukraine is responsible.
