‘Furious 7’ revs up for April box office record

LOS ANGELES - Hot cars, hot cast and red-hot box office figures -- the juggernaut “Fast & Furious” franchise is revving up for another wild ride. “Furious 7”, the latest installment in the blockbuster action series about a policeman who infiltrates and later becomes part of the world of street racing, hits theaters around the world from Wednesday. The fast-paced film with a racially diverse cast that has won over audiences both at home and abroad is certain to rake in major cash, but it will also tug at the heartstrings of fans. Star Paul Walker, who has played cop-turned-racer Brian O’Conner in the films, died in a fiery car crash in December 2013 at age 40 -- a tragedy reminiscent of his character’s on-screen adventures. To complete the film, which was originally set for

release in summer 2014, the production team turned to his actor brothers Caleb and Cody, who resemble him. Analysts say “Furious 7” will have a very big opening. “Look for the record for biggest April debut to fall hard this weekend,” said Paul Dergarabedian, of the box office tracker Rentrak. That top spot is currently held by last year’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” at $95 million, but Dergarabedian said “Furious 7” was likely to rake in more than $100 million. Some have gone much farther, saying a US take of $155 million was not out of the question, and a global opening weekend total of $250 million -- or, the film’s total budget.

Besides the obvious predictions of box office success, reviews so far have generally been good. The film has so far earned an 87 percent approval rating on the aggregator site rottentomatoes.com -- putting it ahead of some action films that went on to win Oscars. Dergarabedian says the success stems from “an undeniably appealing concept and an impressive evolutionary path which has taken it well beyond its original concept as a ‘fast cars, hot girls and cool guys’ genre film.” “These films pushed the boundaries of traditional action movie motifs and created a world unto itself that was mainly a product of the incredibly effective casting of the ensemble.” (afp)

NEW YORK — In “The Clouds of Sils Maria,” Kristen Stewart’s celebrity has been inverted. The paparazzi rush right past her. She plays the efficient, constantly emailing assistant to Juliette Binoche’s famed European actress. Reading tabloid stories about a Hollywood starlet (played by Chloe Grace Moretz), she shrugs: “It’s celebrity news. It’s fun.” When she’s running through possible roles for her boss, the former “Twilight” star describes one film as having werewolves “for some reason.” “I had to seriously harness the glee that was exploding across my face when I was saying some of those lines,” Stewart said in an interview. “I don’t think that’s what the movie is fully about. It’s not a commentary about the insane nature of the media in the States, especially. But no one knows about that more than me.” Stewart, 24, doesn’t seem so much like she’s fleeing her teen idol past as she’s already long gone, maybe just glancing back, with a wink. “The Clouds of Sils Maria,” directed by French filmmaker Olivier Assayas (“Carlos,” ‘’Summer Hours”), which opens in theaters April 10, is part of a string of recent and upcoming films Stewart has made in a headlong rush.

“I’m having more fun now than I ever have,” says Stewart. “These movies go by (she snaps her fingers). We made ‘Camp X-Ray’ in 20 days. It’s just better when it’s faster.” The frenetic pace is in stark contrast to the plodding demands of a five-film franchise like “Twilight.” The movies now are largely independent, and the roles (like in “Sils Maria”) are often supporting or part of an ensemble. She costarred as Julianne Moore’s daughter in “Still Alice” and played a Guantanamo guard in “Camp X-Ray.” She’s completed a science-fiction romance (“Equals”), a stoner thriller (“American Ultra”) and a New York mugging drama (“Anesthesia”). She’s been filming Kelly Reichardt’s adaptation of Maile Meloy short stories, and she’s to co-star in Woody Allen’s

next film. “Because of the lack of expectation of any of these movies, there were no moments that people had read in a book that were the most important thing in their lives,” she says, referring to her “Twilight” role. “I really let go.” Shew adds she’s “gotten a lot better at trusting myself and not thinking that you need to use these nerves and crazy inertia to convince everyone on the set that you’re legitimate.” Stewart’s post-”Twilight” work reveals (or perhaps reminds) that her nature is less as a megawatt star than an actress bent on naturalism, instinct and inquisitiveness. She has basically returned to making much the same kind of indies she made outside of “Twilight”: “Adventureland,” ‘’Welcome to the Rileys,” ‘’The Runaways.” There’s a distinct lack of preciousness in choosing projects or any evident career-building. When asked about how “Twilight” changed her, Stewart rambles reluctantly on how it helped her realize she’s an actor. But when it’s pointed out that it sounds like “Twilight” is far from her thoughts, she quickly nods. “Completely. I only have to think about that when someone asks me.” (ap)

SEOUL - One of K-pop’s biggest boy bands, Big Bang, announced Thursday their first world tour in three years, spanning Asia and the Americas to promote a much-anticipated new album. The five-members of the South Korean group are among the best-known faces of the K-pop phenomenon, whose popularity has swept Asia and beyond over the last 10 years.

The upcoming tour kicks off with two concerts in Seoul on April 25 and 26 and then moves to at least 15 countries including China, Japan and the United States, the band’s agency YG Entertainment said in a statement. A total of 70 concerts have been scheduled, with the agency promising new venues and well trodden K-pop stages in Southeast Asia.

Popular rapper and the band’s leader G-Dragon earlier said Big Bang was planning to release a new album along with the global tour. Their last album, “Alive”, was released in 2012 and became the first Korean-language entrant in the US Billboard 200 album chart. Since then, the five members of the band have largely concentrated on individual projects. (afp)

Therefore Agung hoped that the government, tourism operators and the people should continue to increase the quality of

Residents of Bayunggede need clean water service

Local headman, I Wayan Suarjaya, said that local residents desperately need adequate water services. Over the years, people have had to purchase water at increasingly higher prices, now reaching as much as IDR 170,000 per 5,000 liters of water. “Our residents have been buying water for a long time because there is no municipal water service,” he said. He went on to say that 5,000 liters of water last about 20 days for domestic uses but only last one day for irrigating agricultural lands. Thus residents here are constantly buying water,” he said. The village governance cannot do much to address the problem because there is no source of water in the vicinity that can meet the needs of the residents. There is a spring but it has an extremely small output which is more like seepage. “There is a spring, but it doesn’t give much water, it is not enough to meet the needs of local residents,” said Suarjaya. rainwater, so that we don’t have to buy,” he added. Another resident described the same reality. When dry season arrives, local people must set aside money to purchase water.

Occasionally, people also bathe at a spring located in the south of the village. However, since it provides very little water, only a few people can take advantage of the water there. Given the dire

According to Wijarsa, the victim was reportedly mugged on Tuesday (Mar. 31), at approximately 2:30 a.m. in front of the Bintang Beauty Salon on Jalan Mataram, Kuta, Badung soon after which the police came to the scene where officers conducted an investigation and gathered information from people around the location.

Based on the statements of witnesses and victim herself, the culprits consisted of two people riding a black and red Honda Scoopy motorcycle with license plate DK 8694 ED. The police tracked down the owner of the motorcycle with the vehicle registration office (Samsat) and immediately sought him out. The owner of the motorbike with initials AG said he had lent the bike to the two suspects. “We then immediately tracked down the

whereabouts of the two suspects,” said Dewa Tagel. On Wednesday (Apr. 1) at approximately 1:00AM, officers arrested the suspect WP who was hanging out in front of the Internet Café on Jalan Mataram, Kuta. To the officers, he admitted to have committed the mugging along with KB. After that, police arrested KB at his parents’ residents on Jalan Imam Bonjol, Denpasar. The two suspects from Munti Gunung,

Karangasem, were taken to the police station where they confessed that KB served as accomplice while WP as committed the crime. From the American victim, they had stolen a bag containing cash worth IDR 150,000, a mobile phone, its charger and a power bank. “The mobile phone was sold to a stranger, while the bag, charger and power bank were thrown into a trash on Jalan Imam Bonjol, Denpasar,” he said. Keris as the symbol of Although today is no longer the royal era, many people still collect kris dagger. Its function is clear and no longer as it used to. It is no longer a symbol of social status or weapon to defend one’s self or fight in the war, but tends to become a symbol of cultural property, religion or may become an investment. One of the kris dagger makers, Pande Wayan Suteja Neka, said that kris is a symbol of life. Keris symbolizes male-female, fathermother, sky-earth and phallus-yoni. Phallus, sky and male as the symbols of father is represented by the kris dagger, while the female, earth and yoni symbolizes a woman (mother) represented by the sheath itself. If the kris dagger has been put into the sheath, it will result in harmonious, balanced and lucky nature as well as avoid from danger. Worldly heaven will be created at the same time. Typically, the encounter between the sky and earth occurs during rainy season. Sky (father) making the rain causes the water fall to earth (ground) causing plants and vegetation to flourish. “When the soil is fertile, the plant proliferates, it is a grace,” he said. It is not surprising if the prominence of dagger is now rising. It is certainly encouraging. After all, a kris dagger is a symbol of cultural life of the community of our ancestors. It may not be forgotten, but should be preserved.

Related to this issue, the government of Denpasar holds an event entitled Petinget Rahina Tumpek Landep enlivened with a carnival and exhibition of kris dagger every Tumpek Landep. This event results in a concept or appeal known as ‘one family one kris dagger. Each household is suggested to collect a kris dagger because the representation of kris dagger must be revived continuously in the global era. Suteja Neka said that our kris dagger must merge with us because it is a reflection of an era with a specific purpose and causality. The word keris or kris is derived from Balinese word keker meaning ‘a command’ or kekeran meaning ‘protector’ and the ris or aris meaning ‘wisdom’ or ‘balance.’ This has strong relationship to one’s psychiatry and ancestor. The more experience, the deeper the history to be discovered because the kris has symbolical and philosophical meaning. (kmb)

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Louisville: more than a horse race

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — When the azaleas and dogwoods burst into springtime bloom, thoughts in Louisville turn to parties, fashion and fast horses in the days leading up to the Kentucky Derby. This city along the Ohio River spends weeks celebrating a two-minute horse race on the first Saturday in May. It has a growing reputation as a foodie destination, with fare ranging from corn dogs and turkey legs at the Chow Wagon during Derby season to creative cuisine in trendy neighborhoods. This is bourbon country, so cocktails featuring the signature whiskey are staples. In the downtown museum district, visitors can reconnect with Muhammad Ali’s boxing career or watch slabs of wood turn into Louisville Slugger baseball bats. The Big Four Bridge connecting Kentucky and Indiana has become a popular destination since opening last year, allowing people to walk or jog from one side of the Ohio River to the other. The bridge offers panoramic views of the river and downtown, and at night the span is illuminated by colorchanging lights. For a subterranean adventure, there’s Louisville Mega Cavern. Its newest attraction is an indoor bicycle park with miles of dirt trails, jumps and stunt courses that opened recently inside the abandoned limestone mine. Bike rentals are expected to be available soon. The cavern also features a zip line course and tram tours. Each holiday season the cavern is transformed into a drive-thru Christmas light show. The city’s Urban Bourbon Trail has spiced up the night scene with its cocktail and culinary experience at dozens of restaurants. Tapping into bourbon’s revival, Heaven Hill Distilleries Inc. offers tours and tastings at its downtown attraction — The Evan Williams Bourbon Experience. Several other whiskey makers have opened or are planning craft distilleries nearby. Louisville pays homage to many of its best-known residents — past and present — in giant murals. Local attractions also include an impressive lineup of iconic names, brands and events. The Muhammad Ali Center highlights the boxing career and humanitarian causes of the three-time world heavyweight champion who grew up in Louisville. Ali’s rapid-fire punching and talking are relived in video replays. Visitors can shadowbox, punch a speed bag and lean into a heavy bag that lets them feel the power of an Ali punch. Other exhibits focus on Ali’s humanitarian efforts. A short walk away, a 120-foottall steel bat looms outside the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory. Visitors can grip a treasure trove of bats once used by a lineup of Hall of Famers, including Mickey Mantle, Cal Ripken Jr. and Johnny Bench. In the factory, there are the sounds of machines and the smell of wood as the bats

are shaped. At the Kentucky Derby Museum, the first leg of the Triple Crown is relived every day. Videos give visitors a feel for the Derby Day atmosphere — from the hardcharging thoroughbreds to the regalia of hats and fashion. The museum offers tours of Churchill Downs that can include visits to the backside where horses are stabled or into the grandstand area. The museum is just off Gate 1 at the track. The museum is closed Derby Day and the day before when the Kentucky Oaks for 3-year-old fillies is run. It’s open Monday through Thursday of Derby Week and reopens the day after the Derby. Hotels and restaurants fill up quickly during Derby Week as race fans and those just wanting a taste of the Derby experience converge. So make dinner reservations early — like right away, if you haven’t already — for popular spots on Derby and Oaks days. For those determined to get into a booked-up restaurant, try calling close to race time. Some people make multiple reservations, get worn out at the track or have too much fun — those mint juleps can add up — and cancel at the last minute. The weather can be as unpredictable as the races. So pack for any eventuality, with outfits for hot or cold weather. For a quick tour of Louisville, there’s Trolley de ‘Ville. The oldtime trolley rides offer 14-mile, 75-minute tours that are narrated. Riders can learn about the city, the Kentucky Derby and good places to eat. Downtown’s East Market District — commonly known as NuLu, standing for New Louisville — is becoming a popular destination for its array of art galleries, specialty stores, antiques shops and restaurants. Garage Bar, housed in a former auto service garage, serves up Kentucky bourbons, seasonal cocktails, an eclectic lineup of draft and bottled craft brews and wine. Minister urges Indonesian women to more environmentaly conscious

DENPASAR - Women Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Yohana Yembise has expressed the hope that Indonesian women can be more environmentally cognizant, especially when it comes to their children and families. “Children are a great asset for preserving the environment. For that, women have an important role in educating them to become environmentally conscious,” the minis-

ter said after planting mangroves at the Serangan village in Bali. Yohana noted that environmental conditions, especially in the urban areas, were generating

grave concern due to the problem of excessive waste stemming from indiscriminate littering by people. “Children and families should

be taught to change their mindset and preserve the environment,” she said, adding that the role of women in preserving the environment should be realized, which would also support tourism on the island of Bali. The Bali Provincial Government has also started a program

called ‘clean and green,’ which is expected to be implemented and supported by the women. She said the “clean and green” program was also supported by international women, who will organize the seventh international women’s conference in Nusa Dua on April 5. (ant)

Originally the Art Centers, spread throughout the archipelago, were managed by the General Director of the Republic of Indonesia’s centralized Ministry of Culture and Education. Later the Bali Art Center fell under the management of the UPT Bali Culture Agency, as part of Bali’s regional autonomy. These Art Centers came out of a vision of creating cultural parks that would serve as centers for culture and civilization rooted in national unity and working towards advancements in culture, unity and prosperity. “The mission includes promoting national and regional cultures, making discoveries and developments, and conserving and developing creativity, cultural communication and

cultural diplomacy, as well as promoting prosperity for artists, culture and society,” said anthropologist, I Wayan Geriya, recently. Geriya added that the Bali Art Center represents the civilization and cultural creativity of Bali as the island of the arts. In order to reflect this concept, the Art Center was built with eight principal components. These include; a temple as the source of artistic taksu or divine vibration, a library as the source of literature and science, a culture exhibition hall, open and closed stages, artists’ quarters, administrative spaces, green spaces and practical spaces to support these. There has always been emphasis placed on creating constructive communications with the surrounding communities. The Bali Art Center has a sufficiently good reputation having hosted

The revelations have raised questions about who knew what, when, and whether Lubitz could have been stopped. The crash has prompted particular soul-searching in Germany. Seventy-two of those killed were German citizens, the worst air disaster in the nation’s history since the Concorde crash of 2000, in which 97 Germans died. “Germany, a byword for technical perfection where security isn’t just a hallmark of quality but an article of faith and a measure of value, has been traumatized,” historian Michael Stuermer wrote in an op-ed Saturday for Die Welt newspaper. Investigators have pieced together a picture of Lubitz by analyzing the voice and flight data recorders found at the crash site, searching his homes in Duesseldorf and Montabaur, and by interviewing friends, relatives, colleagues and doctors.So far, this is what they have communicated about their findings: —Medical records show that before he received his pilot’s license, Lubitz suffered from depression, with doctors recording “suicidal tendencies.” It forced him to take a break of several months from his pilot training. Lufthansa has said Lubitz informed their flight school when he returned in 2009 that he had experienced an episode of “severe depression.” But Germanwings, the Lufthansa subsidiary Lubitz joined in 2013, said it was unaware of this. But both airlines say Lubitz passed all medical tests and was cleared by doctors as fit to fly. —In the months before the crash Lubitz sought help from several doctors, including specialists at Duesseldorf’s University Hospital. The hospital declined to confirm reports that Lubitz was experiencing vision problems, but said he had come in for tests. Duesseldorf prosecutors say there was no evidence the co-pilot had any physical ailments. —In the week leading up to the crash Lubitz spent time online researching suicide methods and cockpit door security. WASHINGTON — For months, the U.S. economy’s strength has been flagging. Manufacturing slowed. Fewer homes were built.

Cheaper gas failed to ignite consumer spending. Yet month after month, employers kept on hiring vigorously.

In March, the economy’s slump finally overtook the job market. Employers added just 126,000 workers — the fewest since December 2013 — snapping a 12-month streak of gains above 200,000. At the same time, the unemployment rate remained at 5.5 percent. The slowdown reported Friday by the Labor Department posed a puzzle to economists: Was the tepid job gain a temporary blip due mainly to a harsh winter and an economy adjusting to much lower oil prices? Or did it mark a return to the middling performance that’s defined much of the nearly 6-year-old recovery from the Great Recession? No one will know for sure until the government’s monthly employment reports later this spring help gauge the direction of the job market. That leaves the U.S. economy — until very recently the envy of other industrialized nations — facing a renewed sense of uncertainty. “We knew less than we thought we did,” said Tara Sinclair, a George Washington University professor and chief economist at Indeed, the job-posting web site. The optimistic view is that

much of the weakness will pass. An unseasonably cold March followed a brutal winter that slowed construction and other key sectors. Some other categories managed to extend their gains. Health care added 22,000 workers. Professional and business services — a sector that includes lawyers, engineers, accountants and office temps — gained 40,000. Financial services expanded by 8,000, and retailers maintained their 12-month pace by adding 25,900. In addition to reporting sluggish hiring for March, the government revised down its estimate of job gains in February and January by a combined 69,000. Wage growth remained modest in March as it has for the past six years. Many Americans remain out of the labor force, partly because many baby boomers are reaching retirement age. The percentage of Americans either working or looking for work fell in March to 62.7 percent, the lowest such rate since 1978. That trend illustrates that one reason the unemployment rate is low is that many people without jobs are no longer seeking work and so aren’t counted as unemployed. (ap)

Japan carmaker Suzuki to build second plant in Myanmar TOKYO - Japanese automaker Suzuki plans to invest tens of millions of dollars to build a second plant in Myanmar, seeking to make quick inroads in the country’s growing market, a report said Saturday. SINGARAJA - The Bukakak tradition was once again performed by hundreds of Giri Mas villagers, in the Sawan subdistrict of Buleleng. As an expression of gratitude to the Creator for the bountiful harvest, every two years local people create a bukakak or three-meter high skeleton of a giant eagle made of bamboo and young palm leaves. Together, hundreds of people from the community parade the bukakak around the village, accompanied by baleganjur gamelan music. Saturday afternoon (Apr. 4). The procession was enlivened by young and old people joining together in a series of event related to the ngusaba ritual that runs from March 27 to April 4, 2015 in Giri Mas village. This bukakak involved a committee of hundreds of young people as a way to help preserve this tradition and the feeling of gratitude for the fortunate blessings that the community received this year. Starting early in the morning, people gathered at subak temple of Giri Mas village to join together in making the bamboo frame of the bukakak. Fatigue is not visible on the faces of these of young people, nor in the strains of the baleganjur gamelan music and chants that are sung loudly to one another as a means to encourage everyone as they prepare the bukakak ritual. The bukakak traditional ritual is held during the full moon and

sometimes young people will play the gamelan as a way to meet one and other. Jro Mangku Ketut Merta Dharma said that the bukakak tradition is centered at the subak temple of Giri Mas village where people begin by saying prayers together. Hundreds of young people are dressed in white traditional shirts and red sarongs symbolizing the red and white heritage. After the prayers, they perform the purification of sarad at Pancoran Mas Temple, and then ask for yellow bija or blessing rice. “Three days before the event, local villagers asked the local deities about the direction of the procession. The Bukakak tradition has lasted for many generations. Public policy states that it should be held every two years, due to the high costs involved,” said Dharma. Ketut Dharma also explained that part of the uniqueness of bukakak activity is that local deities go sightseeing to a number of villages such as Bungkulan, Sawan, Seririt, Bale Agung, Sangsit, and surrounding areas. The tradition of bukakak draws the enthusiasm of pilgrims from various villages in Bali. Usually, according to tradition, the bukakak is held on full moon in May but due to this year’s gubernatorial elections, the ceremonial ritual was held on the full moon in April. “This bukakak tradition belongs to Balinese communities in both the North

and South of Bali, as part of the North we perform it in Buleleng. The bukakak ceremonial ritual is held as an effort to make the farming community prosperous and peaceful by increasing rice production,” said Jro Mangku Ketut Merta Dharma. Other than bukakak, communities also create dangsil symbolizing trinity, in the sad kahyangan and dang kahyangan temple in the outermost courtyard of the subak temple of Giri Mas. The bukakak made from young palm leaf and bamboo is then paraded around the village as a symbol of sarad agung -the vehicle of Lord Vishnu. “The young people who carry the the bukakak are dressed in predominantly red and white clothes symbolizing the flag of Indonesia, while the bukakak itself serves as the eagle of the Pancasila,” he said. The Head of the Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency, Gede Suyasa, highly appreciated the implementation of this tradition as an expression of gratitude after the harvest. “The philosophical value of this ritual is very deep and high. We have a program to include the bukakak tradition in the calendar of events. In the future, we will also help the event management to make the occasion more attractive for visitors and provide training for tour guides, so that they can provide accurate information,” he said. MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Storm Maysak weakened before hitting the Philippines’ northeastern coast Sunday, driving away thousands of Lenten holiday vacationers and tourists from beach and surfing resorts. Alexander Pama, who heads the country’s disaster-response agency, praised the public cooperation after vacationers heeded warnings and moved away from beach resorts. Maysak brought sporadic rains and whipped up waves, but no stormrelated deaths have been officially declared by authorities so far. Three men separately drowned in a beach resort and a river in northern Cagayan province Friday and Saturday, according to the Office of Civil Defense, which monitors storm casualties and damage, but Pama said authorities were still trying to determine whether the deaths were caused by the then-approaching storm. One of the men apparently took part in a drinking spree before swimming in a river, where he was found dead, the Office of Civil Defense said. The two other men were swept

away by strong currents. “It’s nice to say zero casualties, but it’s too early to tell,” Pama told reporters. Maysak, first forecast as a supertyphoon, killed four people and destroyed hundreds of homes in Micronesia before blowing toward the Philippines, where officials mobilized to prevent a potential disaster had the storm retained its lethal power. The storm was downgraded Sunday to a tropical depression. Many Philippine TV and radio networks did not shut down as they traditionally do for the Easter holidays in the largely Roman Catholic nation to report on Maysak, which prompted officials to declare storm warnings and evacuate villagers from high-risk communities. INDONESIA Government urged to cautious in deciding fuel prices

JAKARTA - Chairman of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Zulkifli Hasan asked the government to be careful in deciding the prices of fuel oils. “I hope the government will be cautious in deciding the prices of fuel oils. It should not follow the market price mechanism,” Zulkifli Hasan said on Sunday. He said that fuel oils should be subsidized as required by Article 33 of the Constitution, meaning that the if the government left fuel oil prices to the market mechanism, it violated the Constitution. “Fuel oil should be subsidized based on the message of the Constitution which suggested that it should serve the interest of the people. If the price of fuel oils follows the market

price, it meas that the government is potentially violating the Constitution,” he said. In the meantime, Chairman of the Indonesian Hindu Youths Association (Peradah) Wayan Sudana said the government should review its policy regarding the fuel oil prices. It should consider facts in the field. “The government should review it again to avoid putting burden on the people,” Sudana added. On March 28, 2015, the government hiked the prices of premium gasoline and diesel fuel by Rp500 per liter, respectively.

The prices of premium gasoline were raised from Rp6,800 to Rp7,300 per liter for regions outside Java, Madura and Bali (Jamali), and from Rp6,900 to R7,400 for regions in Jamali. The price of subsidized diesel oil was also increased from Rp6,400 per liter to Rp6,900 per liter both for regions inside and outside Java, Madura and Bali. This was the second time that the government raised the gasoline and diesel oil prices in March after increasing them earlier on March 1. (ant)

Indonesia settles Olympics logo row ahead of Asian Games

JAKARTA - An Indonesian sports body has agreed to stop using the Olympic rings logo, an official said, after the country faced the threat of losing the right to host the 2018 Asian Games. The International Olympic Committee sent a letter in January warning Indonesia that it could lose its role in IOC-sanctioned events -- including the Asian Games -- after the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) used the interlocking Olympic rings as its symbol. After legal wranglings over the use of the symbol, KONI relented this week and said it was looking for a new logo different to the Olympic rings design. “We have formed a working group to re-design our logo,” said Tono Suratman, the head of KONI. The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) in September approved Indonesia as the hosts of the Asian Games, after Vietnam decided to withdraw due to rising costs. The Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI), which as an IOC national committee member is allowed to use the Olympics logo, welcomed the move. “By KONI dropping the IOC logo, all sports stakeholders in Indonesia can work together to host the 2018 Asian Games and use this event for the revival of Indonesia’s sports development,” said Ade Lukman, head of the sports commission of KOI. More than 300 slave fishermen now safe on Indonesian island

TUAL, Indonesia — The same trawlers that had enslaved countless migrant fishermen for years carried more than 300 of them to freedom Saturday, following a dramatic rescue from a remote Indonesian island that many men believed would likely be their final resting place. After 17 hours overnight at sea, the men, mostly from Myanmar, took their first steps of freedom. They filed off the boats and walked to the site of their new temporary home where they were finally safe. They moved in an orderly, singlefile line with colored ribbons tied around their wrists to identify which of the six vessels had brought them. They were tired from the long, cramped journey, but smiled and laughed while talking about the new lives they were about to start. At one point, a group sang and clapped their hands. But mostly, the fear of being beaten or killed by their captors had finally lifted. “I’m so happy, I wanted to go home for so long,” said Aung Aung, 26, who lifted his hair on the left side of his head to show a fat, jagged scar stretching from his lip to the back of his neck — the result of a machete attack by his captain’s son. “I missed home and especially after I was cut ... I was afraid I would die there.”

The Burmese men were among hundreds of migrant workers revealed in an Associated Press investigation to have been lured or tricked into leaving their countries to go to Thailand, where they were put on boats and brought to Indonesia. From there, they were forced to catch seafood that was shipped back to Thailand and exported to consumers around the world, including the United States. In response to the AP’s findings, an Indonesian delegation visited the island village of Benjina on Friday and offered immediate evacuation after finding brutal conditions, down to an “enforcer” paid to beat men up. The officials from the Fisheries Ministry offered the men a chance to leave, fearing they would not be safe if they stayed on the island after speaking out about the horrendous labor abuses they endured. About 320 men took up the offer. Even as a downpour started, some dashed through the rain. They sprinted back to their boats, jumped over the rails and threw themselves through windows. They stuffed their meager belongings into plastic bags, small suitcases and day packs, and rushed back to the dock, not wanting to be left behind. After arriving on the island of Tual on Saturday afternoon, the men

were given traditional packets of Indonesian rice wrapped in paper. Those who were sick or injured were offered medical care by paramedics inside ambulances. The ministry has expressed some concern over how to feed so many people for an extended period of time, but a large open-air pavilion is being provided for the men to sleep under. The accommodation is crude with a concrete floor, but it has a roof to keep them dry and, most importantly, they are safe. Officials from Myanmar are set to visit the islands next week and will assist with bringing the men home and locating others who are still trapped. Friday’s unexpected rescue came after a round of interviews Indonesian officials held with the fishermen, where they confirmed the abuse reported in the AP story, which included video of eight migrants locked in a cage and a slave graveyard. The men talked of how they were beaten and shocked with Taser-like devices at sea, forced to work almost nonstop without clean water or proper food, paid little or nothing and prevented from going home. There was essentially no way out. Benjina is in the far reaches of Indonesia and so remote, there was no phone

service until a cell tower was installed last month, and it is a difficult place to reach in the best of circumstances. Some of the men said the abuse went even further at the hands of an Indonesian man known as “the enforcer.” He was deeply feared and hated by the workers, who said he was hired by their boat captains to punish them for misbehavior. The findings documented by In-

donesian officials and the AP came in stark contrast to what a Thai delegation reported from a visit to Benjina earlier this week when they searched for trafficked Thai nationals. They denied mistreatment on the boats and said the crews were all Thai, even though the AP found many migrant workers from other countries were issued fake documents with Thai names and addresses. MIAMI - Serena Williams won her eighth Miami Open title with little trouble, enjoying a 6-2 6-0 win over Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro in just 56 minutes on Saturday. The victory was the world number one’s third consecutive title at Miami and she becomes just the fourth woman in the open-era to win the same tournament eight times, joining Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert and Steffi Graf. “It feels really good to have eight under my belt. MILAN - Angry Inter Milan coach Roberto Mancini cancelled his players’ day off and ordered them in for an early morning training session on Sunday after they were held to a 1-1 home draw by bottom-of-thetable Parma. Inter confirmed on their website (www.inter.it) that the first team had trained at 8:30 a.m. local time, watched by club vice-president Javier Zanetti and sporting director Piero Ausilio. Mancini was furious at his players’ attitude after the Saturday’s draw left them joint ninth alongside Genoa and 10 points adrift of the European places. “I’m sorry that the situation, instead of improving, has worsened,” Mancini told reporters after the game. “You always hope that things will change,” he added. “The last four weeks have been very bad, especially in terms of the results and also because of the second

half performance (against Parma). “These are things that I can not explain well... We played without bite, without malice and that’s something I do not like.” Ausilio said Inter’s remaining games would help make important decisions for next season. “No rest at Easter? The players have rested the day before the match, so it is right that they train (on Sunday),” he said. “We are working towards the future and these last nine games will help of all us judge and understand who is an Inter player and who isn’t. ANKARA, Turkey — A bus carrying Fenerbahce players was shot at on a highway in northern Turkey on Saturday, the region’s governor said. The bus driver was wounded and hospitalized.
