Schwarzenegger quits ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ over show’s Trump ties

LOS ANGELES - Arnold Schwarzenegger said on Friday he will not be back for another season of NBC’s reality show “The Celebrity Apprentice,” blaming U.S. President Donald Trump’s ongoing role as executive producer for low ratings. Action movie star Schwarzenegger took over as host of “Celebrity Apprentice” last year. His first season, which premiered in January, has been watched by around 4 million to 5 million viewers. “Everyone - from the celebrities to the crew to the marketing department - was a straight 10, and I would absolutely work with all of them again on a show that doesn’t have this baggage,” Schwarzenegger said in a statement. The actor’s representative said Schwarzenegger would not be returning for a second season. NBC, a unit of Comcast Corp, did not comment on Schwarzenegger’s decision not to return for another season, or the show’s future. There was no immediate comment from Trump or the White House on Friday. Schwarzenegger, a Republican who served two terms as California governor but said he did not

vote for Trump as president, told British film magazine Empire in an interview published on Friday that he was leaving the show due to Trump’s involvement. News that Trump will retain an executive producer credit on the show, which usually involves a payment, caused a media furor in December about potential conflicts of interest. Schwarzenegger told Empire that the show was “a really great opportunity, but “under the circumstances I don’t want to do it again.” “When people found out that Trump was still involved as executive producer and was still receiving money from the show, then half the people (started) boycotting it,” Schwarzenegger said. CAMBRIDGE — Fresh from her best supporting actress Oscar win for her role in “Fences,” Viola Davis is at Harvard University to receive the 2017 Artist of the Year Award from the Harvard Foundation. Davis is attending the Cultural Rhythms Festival on Saturday. She briefly came on stage before taking a seat to watch a series of cultural musical performances by students. In addition to the Oscar, Davis received the Critics’ Choice, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, and British Academy of Films and Television Arts awards for her portrayal of Rose Maxson in the film adaptation of “Fences,” an August Wilson play. Davis also won a Tony Award for the 2010 Broadway revival of the play. Previous winners of the Harvard award include Quincy Jones, Andy Garcia, Matt Damon, Salma Hayek and Shakira. (ap)

BAGHDAD - Twelve people, including women and children, are being treated for possible exposure to chemical weapons agents in Mosul, where Islamic State is fighting off an offensive by U.S.-backed Iraqi forces, the United Nations said on Saturday.

The U.N.’s World Health Organization has activated with partners and local health authorities “an emergency response plan to safely treat men, women and children who may be exposed to the highly toxic chemical,” the agency said in a statement. It said all 12 patients had been received since March 1 for treatment which they are undergoing in Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s Kurdish region, east of Mosul. Four of them are showing “severe signs associated with exposure to a blister agent”. The patients were exposed to the chemical agents in the eastern side of Mosul. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on

Friday that five children and two women were receiving treatment for exposure to chemical agents. The ICRC statement did not say which side used the chemical agents that caused blisters, redness in the eyes, irritation, vomiting and coughing. Iraqi forces captured the eastern side of Mosul in January after 100 days of fighting and launched their attack on the districts that lie west of the Tigris river on Feb. 19. The eastern side remains within reach of the militants’ rockets and mortar shells. Defeating Islamic State in Mosul would crush the Iraqi wing of the caliphate declared by the group’s leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, in 2014, over parts of Iraq and Syria.

The U.N. Humanitarian Coordinator in Iraq, Lise Grande, called for an investigation. “This is horrible. Fight against extortion indiscriminatingly

EARLY this year, the anti-extortion taskforce of Bali police teaming up with relevant agencies intensifies its action. Moreover, the untouched extortion acts by individuals of mass organizations has been hunted down and arrested since the Bali police are under the leadership of Dr. Petrus Reinhard Golose. Many perpetrators of extortion have been arrested by provincial police along with the ranks, including six individual members of the two major mass organizations in Bali having been detained in jail. “Since the new Bali police chief, he clearly shows his stance to eradicate drugs, hooliganism and terrorism. The extortion committed by individual members of mass organizations is categorized to be an extortion,” said Spokesman of Bali Police, Hengky Widjaja, on Saturday (Mar. 4). He asserted that the rank of Bali police is ordered to firmly crack down on the extortion and prosecute it completely, including places of public services. “So, if any extortion is still found, please let us know. Bali police and the ranks want to provide the best and excellent service, without extortion and free from corruption, collusion and nepotism,” he said. Prof. Dr. I Ketut Rai Setiabudhi, an academician, expressed that since the national police chief General Tito Karnavian established the anti-extortion taskforce in each provincial police, it directly takes actions and in a relatively short time has managed to hold red-handed

operation. He highly appreciated to the success of police particularly they have done many red-handed operations since February. “I’m sure that community very much supports this police’s action. We hope when it is free from extortion, the public services will be getting better. This movement must be improved professionally in terms of quality and quantity,” he said. Many organizations or individuals, added Prof. Rai, are prone to extortion either openly or coarsely or by blackmail, but it is hidden. Therefore, it is required a technique or strategy to arrest the perpetrators in redhanded. “The agencies being prone to extortion include the national land agency (BPN), immigration, harbor authority, quarrying activities, licensing, prison, roadworthy test and others. In the past, it frequently happened at vehicle registration and driving license submission, but it has now been increasingly clean,” said the lecturer of anticorruption study clinic at

Related to this, police should continuously strengthen its commitment to fight against extortion indiscriminately and should be brave because people are very much looking forward to the police. If police are strong, the country will surely be strong and the people will get protected. He explained that being caught in red-handed legally means the arrest of someone while committing a crime or immediately after committing a crime. If a moment later is found any objects alleged to have been used to commit criminal acts, it can become an indication if the person is the perpetrator or helps others to do so. The presence of the state, in this case the police, to combat extortion seems to have been considered as common thing because it has lasted longer. Actually, it is a criminal act of extortion and becomes the duty of police to combat it. Therefore, police should remain consistent and committed, especially should have courage to take firm action, including against those claiming as the member of mass organization. “Whoever becomes the police chief, this commitment must still be implemented. By that way, the extortion will not happen again. The mass organization is not guilty, but

the guilt lies in the individual that conducts the extortion or blackmail. When the extortion is intended to enrich the organization, it includes in corporate crime,” said Prof. Rai. In the meantime, a legal practitioner, Edy Hartaka, said that red-handed operation and prosecution of other corruption cases should not be selective, whether it is committed by individual member of police, military, civil servant or mass organization. The anti-extortion taskforce should dare to take firm action against anyone indiscriminately and in accordance with Article 2 of Presidential Decree No. 87/2016 on the antiextortion taskforce that has duties to eradicate extortion effectively and efficiently. “When talking about extortion in general, it can be charged under Article 368 of Criminal Code with a maximum penalty of nine months imprisonment. If the offender is a civil servant or equivalent, it will be charged under Section 423 of Criminal Code with a maximum penalty of six years. There is a penal provision whose penalty is greater than that, namely Article 12 e of Corruption Act,” he said. Extortion, said Edy, is the same as corruption. If the extortion revealed contains the elements of blackmail, then the case will be dealt with by police. Public prosecutor only plays its role in the prosecution. Anti-extortion taskforce should optimize the investigation and query of the case revealed thoroughly. It is meant to give deterrent effect to the perpetrators, particularly in the public service sector so that it does not happen again. “Hopefully, this taskforce remains firm and will not be selective in carrying out their duties. Public can also participate in the eradication of extortion directly or indirectly, either through electronic or non-electronic media. It is in accordance with Article 12 paragraph 1 and 2 of the Presidential Decree No. 87/2016,” asked Edy. (rah)

Six ASEAN stock exchanges make cooperation

MANGUPURA - Seven stock exchange companies of six ASEAN countries will establish cooperation to strengthen the ASEAN stock exchanges. If all the 3,814 stock exchange companies in ASEAN merge, they will become the largest stock exchange in the world. Moreover, they can beat the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. This was stated by Chairman of the 26th ASEAN CEO’s Meeting on Friday (Mar. 3). However in reality, trading value of the stock exchanges in ASEAN is under 1 percent of the total world market capitalization of 3.1 percent with 40 percent liquidity. “If the sales are carried out separately, it is rather difficult to compete. Well, today we agree to make deeper and more concrete collaboration,” said Tito who is also Director of the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI). The next concern is to harmonize the framework of existing regulations considering that each country has their respective regulation. “We have to facilitate the issue that may arise in the ASEAN products, do cross-listing of the ASEAN products and make standardization and recognition among the stock exchanges for the professionals,” he explained. Related to the cross listing, the first thing to do is to establish bilateral agreement. Three countries namely Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand have jointly evaluated their trading. “At first, we’re trying to cross-list in 10 companies in two countries,” he said. The listing will be gradually carried out. Regulatory constraints have caused his party to be unable to realize it immediately. However, this can be tricked with the Indonesia Deposit Receipt (IDR). He was confident that the collaboration of the ASEAN stock exchanges will have a positive impact on the participating stock exchanges. According to him, since the six countries got together and established communication, the market capitalization and the public interest to invest increased significantly. The meeting in Bali becomes a good opportunity. “We agree to build a better cooperation,” he added. In the future, the six countries with seven stock exchange companies have agreed not to mutually bring down, but to do mutual support. “We will make regulations that will not eliminate other countries,” he said. Rio’s Portela wins Carnival samba school parade with water theme

RIO DE JANEIRO - Rio’s premier Portela samba school was crowned champion samba school on Wednesday, winning its first Carnival parade in 33 years with a spectacular performance that highlighted the environmental importance of rivers. One of its massive floats recalled the impact the collapse of a tailings dam had on the River Doce in 2015 in what is considered Brazil’s worst environmental disaster ever. The collapse at the Samarco mine, a joint venture between the world’s largest mining company BHP Billiton Ltd and the biggest iron ore miner, Vale SA , killed nine people and coated a two-state area with mud and mine waste. The dazzling costumes of some of Portela’s 3,400 dancers created the sensation of running water as they danced along Rio’s half-mile Sambadrome parade ground. Others depicted ancient civilizations that emerged on river banks and creatures that live in river waters, including one wing of crawling dancers dressed as alligators. A panel of judges gave Portela 269.9 points for its parade, just

beating out runner up Mocidade Independente for the title. “It’s great. I’m speechless from all the excitement. I want to thank God and my orishas (Yoruba deities),” said Bianca Monteiro, a member of Portela, one of Rio’s oldest samba schools founded in 1923. Though it had not won the Carnival parade since 1984, Portela holds 22 titles, more than any other samba school. Carnival revelers were still dancing in the streets of Brazilian cities on Wednesday but for President Michel Temer’s government it was back to the reality of mounting corruption allegations that threaten its survival. “Out with Temer” was a frequent chant against the unpopular president during the annual celebrations across a country hit by

record unemployment and fed up with its political leaders. On Wednesday afternoon the jailed former CEO of Brazil’s biggest engineering group, Marcelo Odebrecht, was questioned by a judge investigating donations made to Temer’s 2014 campaign, when he was the running mate for leftist leader Dilma Rousseff, who was impeached last year. A source with access to Odebrecht’s deposition said he confirmed an illegal payment to Rousseff’s campaign manager Joao Santana, but added that he could not say if the then-president or her running mate knew about it. Odebrecht said former finance minister Guido Mantega negotiated under-the-table donations for the 2014 campaign that totaled 300 million reais, but he denied they were bribes to obtain government contracts, the source said. Odebrecht, who is seeking leniency to lower a 19-year sentence for corruption and money-laundering, said Temer did not directly request a donation at a dinner in 2014, though the matter was discussed in a general way.

The massive investigation into bribery and political kickbacks, dubbed Operation Car Wash, threatens to bring down members of Temer’s inner circle and has generated political uncertainty that is undermining business confidence and prolonging Brazil’s two-year recession. Electoral court judge Herman Benjamin is seeking to determine if a 10 million reais ($3.2 million) contribution allegedly sought by Temer was paid from graft money, as claimed by another Odebrecht executive in plea bargain testimony. Temer has said the donation was legal and duly registered, but Benjamin could recommend annulling the Rousseff-Temer ticket, which would lead to the president’s removal and election of a new leader by Congress if it is upheld by the full court. The graft scandal endangers Temer’s efforts to push unpopular austerity reforms through Congress aimed at curbing a growing budget deficit that cost Brazil its investment grade credit rating in 2015. “The President’s biggest chal-

lenge now is to prevent the Car Wash investigation paralyzing his reform agenda in Congress,” a Temer aide told Reuters, requesting anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the government’s worries. The crisis will deepen in the next few weeks when Brazil’s top prosecutor Rodrigo Janot will ask the Supreme Court to make public plea bargain statements of 77 Odebrecht executives who are expected to name up to one-third of Brazil’s federal lawmakers for taking kickbacks. Among the politicians at risk is Temer’s chief of staff, Eliseu Padilha, who is on medical leave after prostate surgery but will have to face questions about a package of 1 million reais he allegedly requested as part an undeclared contribution from Odebrecht. A lawyer and longtime friend of Temer’s, José Yunes, has approached prosecutors to confirm the package was handed over at his office for Padilha but that he had no idea that it contained cash, leaving the chief of staff in a difficult position. “Many flow meters at petrol station have unclear. Consumers cannot see clearly the number of fuel purchased. It is a violation because it cannot provide correct, clear and honest information in accordance with the Law on Consumers. Consumers can take a fight here,” said Director of YLPK, I Putu Armaya, on Saturday (Mar. 4). Unclear flow meters should be replaced with the new ones. According to him, Pertamina should conduct surveillance, including the association of the national oil and gas national private entrepreneurs (Hiswana Migas) can do monitoring to its members. “I appeal to the management of petrol stations to replace their unclear flow meter with the new one so that it can clearly be seen,” he said. According to him, trapping and deceptive flow meter due to unclear display is the same as violation against the laws.

He also criticized about the unfriendly services at petrol stations. “There are no smiles and greetings, whereas it has tagline including both. Most petrol stations do not implement these,” he affirmed. A classic problem frequently complained by consumers is the discrepancy of the fuel supplied to fuel purchased by consumers. “Many petrol station attendants or operators at the retail outlets, for instance, only give approximately IDR 9,000 when purchasing as much as IDR 10,000. It means that the consumer still has a change at the petrol station. If such amount is totaled at one gas station, how many losses are suffered by consumers?” he asked. It can be subject to Articles 4 and 8 of the Law on Consumer Protection. “It can be sentenced to two years or a fine of IDR 2 billion although we have harmed for only IDR 200, for instance,”

he concluded. Against the breach, the operators, owner and management of the petrol station are equally responsible for the violation. He appealed to Hiswana Migas to foster its members so as to provide maximum services. Although the flow meter of the petrol stations has been calibrated, he appealed to the meteorological agency to properly supervise the petrol stations. If it is found any violation, he asked to impose strict sanctions. Chairman of Hiswana Migas Bali, Ida Bagus Rai, said that if there is a suspected petrol station, consumers can request a re-calibration for the petrol station with vessel as well as observe the results. Petrol stations should also provide good services for consumers. For example, when consumers buy fuel, the operator should mention that it is started from zero. “When feeling in doubt, please ask the receipt. Both the head and body of Jurgen Kantner were recovered while the troops were conducting combat, search and retrieval operations in Indanan town in the remote southern province of Sulu, Colonel Cirilito Sobejana told reporters. U.S. intelligence agencies concluded last year that Russia hacked and leaked Democratic emails during the election campaign as part of an effort to tilt the vote in Trump’s favor. The Kremlin has denied the allegations. Trump has accused officials in Obama’s administration of trying to discredit him with questions about Russia contacts. Obama spokesman Kevin Lewis said it had been a “cardinal rule” of the Obama administration that no White House official ever interfered with any independent investigation led by the Department of Justice. “Neither President Obama nor any White House official ever ordered surveillance on any U.S. citizen. The Cavs, who have made at least 10 in their last 13 games, made 25 three-pointers in the 135-130 win over the Atlanta Hawks on Friday night in Atlanta. That topped the regular-season record of 24 set

on Dec. 16, 2016 by the Houston Rockets against Orlando. The Cavs also made 25 against the Hawks in the playoffs last year. “It should have been more,” Cleveland coach Tyronn Lue said. Kyrie Irving and LeBron James combined for 81 points to lead the effort. Irving made five threepointers and scored 43 points. James had six three-pointers and scored 38.

The United States Soccer Federation has instituted a policy that requires players on a national team to “stand respectfully” during national anthems, the New York Times and other media reported on Saturday. The policy was reportedly passed by the federation’s board of directors on Feb. 9 but came to light Saturday. The policy, posted on Twitter by former men’s national team player Stuart Holden, reads: “All persons representing a Federation national team shall stand re-

spectfully during the playing of the national anthems at any event in which the Federation is represented.” U.S. Soccer director of communications Neil Buethe confirmed the policy in an email to The New York Times.
