John Travolta apologizes to Idina Menzel for flub Associated Press Writer
NEW YORK — John Travolta has apologized to Tony Award winner Idina Menzel for mangling the pronunciation of her name during the Oscars telecast, saying he’d been “beating myself up” over it. On Sunday night’s Academy Awards show, Travolta took the stage and introduced Menzel, but he seemed to say “Adele Dazeem” instead. An estimated 43 million people were watching, and social media has been mocking him relentlessly ever since, especially since he attended rehearsals. Menzel, who played Maureen Johnson in “Rent” onstage and on screen and Elphaba in “Wicked,” seemed unperturbed by the flub as she sang out “Let It Go,” from the animated film “Frozen.” Travolta said in a statement released Tuesday: “I’ve been beating myself up all day. annual movie celebration that honors winners with golden popcorn trophies is scheduled for April 13 at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles. “After eight years of intense negotiations, I am honored to announce I am hosting MTV’s second most prestigious awards show,” O’Brien joked in a state-
ment. It marks the first time O’Brien has hosted the MTV Movie Awards. He previously hosted the Primetime Emmy Awards in 2002 and 2006. Past hosts of the MTV Movie Awards have included Jimmy Fallon, Aziz Ansari, Russell Brand, Rebel Wilson and Sarah Silverman.

Mangrove contaminated by fuel pipeline leakage Bali Post
MANGUPURA - Condition of mangroves along the entrance area to Benoa Harbor is quiet apprehensive. Dozens of mangrove trees have blackened, from the roots to the stem. Their leaves are no longer freshly green, but have changed into yellowish as if they had been dead. Such allblack spectacle is coupled with a distinctive odor of oil. It happens because the water around the almost-dead plant has already been contaminated by yellow oil liquid. The Head of Ngurah Rai Grand Forest Park (Tahura), Mochtar Irwan Abdullah, justified that dozens of mangrove trees in the area of Benoa Harbor were contaminated by oil waste. According to him, such condition had occurred since January 25, 2014 due to leakage on the fuel pipeline owned by PT Indonesia Power. The contaminated area reached about 75 hectares. However, the worst contamination causing the yellowing leaves was only about 25 hectares. “There are some mangrove trees, approximately 25-30 trees, suffered yellowing leaves as a result of oil waste due to leaked pipeline owned by PT Indonesia Power on January 25, 2014,” he said. Irwan explained the location of waste contamination was within the
authority of Benoa Harbor master or outside the forest area of the Ngurah Rai Grand Forest Park (Tahura). Nevertheless, his party continued to monitor, including evaluating the causes of the yellowing leaves of the mangroves. From the monitoring made, PT Indonesia Power, according to him, had installed oil boom to restrict and blockade in order not to spread to the area of Ngurah Rai Grand Forest Park. “I do want this can be carried out soon so it does not spread to the adjacent area of the Grand Forest Park. Otherwise, it can be hazardous. I observed the efforts to localize the area. Then, the oil spills were entirely sucked through a straw. But, when having a closer look, the roots are black,” he explained. When asked if the nearly-dead mangroves were also caused by the
toll bridge (JDP) construction project, Irwan declined to comment. According to him, it should be asked to those who established the toll bridge. Meanwhile, PT Indonesia Power through its Spokesperson, Made Sukarma, did not argue if the contamination in the mangrove forest area around the Benoa Harbor was caused by the leakage of pipeline owned by his company. “However, the problem is over. We just attended a coordinating meeting with the Denpasar Environment Agency, Bali Forestry Agency, Grand Forest Park, Harbor Authority (Pelindo), Benoa Harbor Master and Mangrove, and we will plant mangrove trees this month. SINGARAJA - Buleleng Police held a Brata Agung preoperative drill 2014 in the Gde Manik Cultural Hall, Singaraja, Tuesday (Mar 4). The activity posed an effort to harmonize the security ahead of the legislative election in April 2014. On that occasion, Chief of Buleleng Police, Benny Arjanto, asked all staff to improve their discipline and maintain the security solidarity ahead of the election. Beny Arjanto said the electoral activities and Nyepi holiday had been anticipated in terms of security matters, including coordinating with local government, religious leaders and communities. Regulation of the Nyepi celebration should be guarded well pursuant to the appeals of the Buleleng Regent and Customary Village Middle Assembly (MMDP) of Buleleng. “We’ve been preparing the security for a long time, in which we have identified the vulnerabilities in the election stage. Similarly, it is also done for the campaign activities of political parties which will be adjacent to the celebration of Nyepi,” he said. With a shared commitment to maintaining the security, it could be realized in the election stages. “Members of the security deployed for the legislative election and Nyepi will be in different number. They will be in charge in appropriate with the circumstances in the field. DENPASAR - Positive case of rabies in dogs was discovered again. At this time, the positive case was found at Tembok village in Tejakula subdistrict and at Ularan village in Seririt subdistrict. It was revealed by the Head of Bali Health Agency, Ketut Suarjaya, Tuesday (Mar 4). With the persistence of positive cases of rabies in dogs, the public awareness needed to be increased again. Moreover, in January 2014, the rabies claimed one casualty in the region of Umajero village, Busungbiu subdistrict, Buleleng. With the positive cases, it meant the rabiesfree Bali program would be postponed. A rabies-free area could be attained if within two years there was no case of rabies found in humans. On that account, added Suarjaya, the community participation and cooperation were essential. “The problem is that there are some people rejecting to the rabies
preventive measures such as vaccination and elimination of stray dogs,” said Suarjaya. He continued that rabies treatment should be carried out in the upstream by handling the rabies carrier animals. The measure was by performing vaccination, and elimination if necessary. Unfortunately, some people were reluctant to vaccinate their pet dogs and let them roam around intentionally. “When their stray dogs will be eliminated, they even rejected it,” said Suarjaya. So, to avoid the elimination, people should take another measure by vaccinating the stray dogs. For this action, the government also needed the help of the community. Therefore, Suarjaya expected people at least to routinely vaccinate their pets and not to let theirs roam around. By doing so, the spread of rabies virus could be controlled and be prevented from claiming further casualties. “Positive cases of rabies in human usually have a history of being bitten by stray dogs or dogs let be wild,” he said. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Pricey NYC eatery falls short on health inspection Associated Press Writer
NEW YORK — Its $310 tasting menu makes Per Se one of New York City’s most expensive restaurants, but its “C’’ grade from health inspectors puts it near the bottom of the heap when it comes to sanitary violations. Per Se got 42 violation points when it was inspected Feb. 19, city health department records showed. Infractions included failure to hold hot food at 140 degrees and a lack of a hand-washing facility near the food preparation area. Per Se representatives did not immediately return a call seeking comment, but the restaurant will have a chance to argue its case at a hearing. Until then it must post a sign saying its grade is pending. The 10-year-old Per Se is the East Coast outlet of Thomas Keller’s French Laundry in Yountville, California. Per Se is one of only seven New York City restaurants to earn three Michelin stars, and The New York Times called it the city’s best restaurant in 2011. The chef’s tasting menu for Sunday included Hudson Valley duck foie gras and Nova Scotia lobster a la Bordelaise. There was a $100 surcharge for Wagyu beef. Studies show big promise for HIV prevention drug Associated Press Writer
Exciting research suggests that a shot every one to three months may someday give an alternative to the daily pills that some people take now to cut their risk of getting HIV. The experimental drug has only been tested for prevention in monkeys, but it completely protected them from infection in two studies reported at an AIDS conference on Tuesday. “This is the most exciting innovation in the field of HIV prevention that I’ve heard recently,” said Dr. Robert Grant, an AIDS expert at the Gladstone Institutes, a foundation affiliated with the University of California, San Francisco. “Both groups are showing 100 percent protection” with the drug, Grant said of the two groups of researchers. “If it works and proves to be safe, it would allow for HIV to be prevented with periodic injections, perhaps every three months.” Until a vaccine is developed, condoms are the best way to prevent infection with the AIDS virus and many other sexually
spread diseases. But not everyone uses them, or does so all the time, so public health officials have pursued other prevention options. A drug used to treat people with HIV — Gilead Science’s Truvada — also is used to help prevent infection in people who don’t have the virus. A big study in gay men a few years ago found it could cut this risk by up to 90 percent, depending on how faithfully people take the daily pills. The new research tested something that could make this type of prevention much more practical — a long-acting experimental drug made by GlaxoSmithKline PLC. The studies tested it in
macaques exposed to a humanmonkey version of HIV. Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention gave six monkeys shots of the drug every four weeks; six others got dummy shots. All were exposed to the virus twice a week for 11 weeks. The monkeys who got the fake treatment were readily infected “but the animals that received the long-acting drug remained protected,” said study leader Gerardo Garcia-Lerma of the CDC. The results mirror what was seen in the CDC’s early research in monkeys on Truvada, the pill that’s available for HIV prevention now.

Hotel occupancy rates down Antara
DENPASAR - The occupancy rates of star rated hotels in Bali averaged 57.76 percent in January down 4.77 percentage points from 62.53 percent in December, 2013. “Despite the decline, the rate was still profitable. An occupancy rate of more than 50 percent would be enough to cover operating cost and salaries of employees,” Head of the Bali Central Bureau of Sta-
tistics (BPS) Panusunan Siregar said here on Wednesday. Panusunan said in January the number of foreign visitors to Bali rose 19.89 percent to 279,257 from a year earlier, but down 6.61
percent from December, 2013. He said the highest occupancy rate in January was recorded by star rated hotels in the regency of Tabanan though declining to 71 percent from 73.13 percent a month earlier The second highest occupancy rate was 63.11 percent recorded by hotels in in the regency of Bandung also declining from 67.65 percent in the previous month , followed by hotels in Gianyar at 53.74 percent
down from 59.23 percent. In the district of Karangasem the occupancy rates of star rated hotels averaged only 42.89 percent down from 48.86 percent and in the regency of Buleleng the occupancy rates averaged 33.05 percent down from 40.80 percent and in the city of Denpasar it was 44.17 percent down from 44.80 percent. The districts of Jembrana, Bangli and Klungkung have no star rated hotels.
Based on record at the Bali branch of the Indonesian Association of Hotels and Restaurants (PHRI), Bali has 2,260 star rated hotels and non-star rate hotels with room totaling 56,971 units. There are also villa houses for rent in rural areas with no official licenses. Bali is the country’s most visited tourist destination, contributing to the country’s earnings from the tourism sector.

She was able to grab a knife. But her family was able to stop her,” he told reporters. Agus said the scene took place after the officials told her the documentary could see her thrown back in jail. “She said she was stressed from being followed by reporters all the time,” Agus said. AFP was not able to reach Corby or her relatives for comment. The television documentary by Channel Seven has raised hackles in Indonesia, where officials have suggested Corby was seeking to profit from her crime via media exposure. There has been unconfirmed speculation of a lucrative deal with Channel Seven, which the broadcaster has denied. “There is a big possibility (that Corby’s parole) will be reconsidered,” Indonesian justice minister Amir Syamsuddin was quoted by the daily Kompas as saying on Monday. Corby’s saga has riveted Australians and generated significant sympathy in her home country.

On that occasion, Edy Darma with the members also complained about the operation of many illegal travel agencies on this island. Related to that issue, Benone asked the data on the illegal travel agencies. Later on, it would be held a raid by joint team of the Directorate of Bali Police Traffic Affairs and the Organda Bali to discipline those illegal travel agencies. “We ask the Organda Bali to prepare the data first in order the target will be clear when the raid is carried out. PARIS — Top diplomats from the major players trying to find an end to the crisis in Ukraine are gathering in Paris on Wednesday as tensions simmered over the Russian military takeover of the strategic Crimean Peninsula. The envoys from Russia, Ukraine, the U.S., Britain and France are not necessarily all at the same table, but French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said everyone has been working non-stop for a diplomatic solution over tensions in Ukraine. “We have a principle of firmness but at the same time of searching for dialogue,” Fabius said as he stood alongside his Ukrainian counterpart, making his first trip abroad in the new post. Russia took over Crimea on Saturday, placing troops around its ferry, military bases and border posts.

The announcement came in Li’s speech to the annual session of the National People’s Congress, which meets to approve policies decided by the ruling Communist party. “We must keep economic development as the central task and maintain a proper growth rate,” Li said. “On the basis of careful comparison and repeatedly weighing various factors, as well as considering what is needed and what is possible, we set a growth target of around 7.5 percent.” China’s three decades of rapid industrialisation have transformed its economy and seen incomes soar, but have also brought severe environmental consequences including smog that regularly blankets cities. In his speech Li said he is “declaring war” on pollution, describing it as a “red-
light warning” against inefficiency as he sought to address public concerns on issues from poisoned waterways to food safety. “We will declare war against pollution and fight it with the same determination we battled poverty,” he said. The world’s second-largest economy grew 7.7 percent in 2013, the same as in 2012 -- which was the slowest rate of growth since 1999. Rising prosperity is a key part of the Communist Party’s claim to legitimacy in China, and the government usually sets a conservative economic growth target that it regularly exceeds. The figure is closely watched by analysts for insight into the leadership’s thinking about the economy and how they expect it to perform, as well as what policy initiatives they intend to pursue.
Keeping the target unchanged from last year suggests the government wants to stress stability as it carries out promised economic reforms, analysts said. “My feeling is that on one hand it serves as a signal to stabilise expectations, while on the other it shows policymakers have confidence in maintaining stable momentum in the overall economy,” said Ma Xiaoping, Beijing-based economist for British bank HSBC. The 7.5 percent goal came after soft recent economic data, with a key manufacturing index slipping to an eight-month low in February, the government said Saturday. “We believe China can achieve 7.5 percent GDP growth this year,” economists with Bank of America Merrill Lynch said in a research note on the target, despite what they described as recent “negative news and data” such as manufacturing declines. China’s once regular annual double-digit growth rates have been on a slowing trend, and the 2013 result meant GDP growth had been in single figures for three consecutive years for the first time since 2002.
CANBERRA — Australia’s government rejected a request from Qantas Airways for a $2.7 billion unsecured loan to help the national carrier return to profitability, deciding instead to abolish foreign ownership restrictions, the prime minister said Wednesday. In the wake of Monday’s decision to allow greater foreign ownership of Qantas, Prime Minister Tony Abbott said his ministers had acted on expert advice from accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers to decide that Qantas did not need the line of credit. “We sent in various experts to have a look at Qantas, and the conclusion that we came to based on their advice was that Qantas does not need an unsecured facility from the government,” Abbott told Macquarie Radio on Wednesday. The airline last week posted a first-half loss of 235 million Australian dollars ($211 million) amid tougher competition. Qantas said it would cut 5,000 jobs in a bid to slash costs by AU$2 billion over three years. Qantas’ credit rating was downgraded from investment grade to junk in December when it warned of a looming interim loss of up to AU$300 million and job cuts. The government plans to repeal legislation that prevents foreign airlines from holding more than 35 percent of Qantas and any single foreign investor from holding more than a 25 percent stake. The legislation also mandates 51 percent Australian ownership. Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce on Wednesday welcomed the government’s decision to allow more foreign investment, which he said would “level the playing field” with its major competitor Virgin Australia. Virgin Australia is 64 percent owned by three state-owned carriers: Air New Zealand, Etihad Airways and Singapore Airlines. Joyce argues that foreign governments were funding Virgin Australia’s “loss-making strategy in the domestic market.” Joyce said a government-backed debt facility would have been an interim measure to correct distortions in the aviation market created by restrictions on ownership of Qantas. “We are a very healthy airline, we’re in a very strong position, but we have to manage our way through this loss of rating and we have a plan to do that,” he said. Virgin Australia has opposed any government loan to Qantas, but said it had no issue with greater foreign ownership of Australia’s largest airline. Abbott has not yet won the support of senators outside government whom he needs to pass the changes through parliament. Opposition parties have voiced objections to any reforms that could send Qantas jobs overseas. SINGARAJA - The pier established in the area of Lovina Beach tourist attraction, Buleleng, collapsed after eroded by tidal waves since the bad weather hit Buleleng lately. Pier end on the mainland is now broken and cannot be passed through by travelers. The damage of wooden pier is feared to get worse if the government does not make any efforts to repair. As field observation on Tuesday (Mar 4), pier foundation on the mainland looked to have been eroded by ocean waves. Swift scour of the waves had eroded the foundation so the pier end was broken. Luckily, the piles supporting the pier remained strong, so the pier was still standing intact. However, travelers were hard to pass as the pier end on the mainland was broken and disconnected from the bridge jutting out to sea. Travelers did not dare to cross the pier for fear of the pier would collapse as eroded by ocean waves. A resident, Nyoman Artana, when met at location said the pier was known to have collapsed after the adverse weather condition hit the area within the past few days. Before the pier collapsed, he had seen the foundation at the pier end had started to be eroded by sea waves. A few days later, the pier end was found to have collapsed and came off from pier arrangement jutting into the sea. He and other residents suspected the pier collapsed because the foundation was not strong enough to hold the ocean waves. “Since
the beginning of the adverse weather, the foundation started to erode and finally collapsed so the pier looked to disconnect to its structure,” he said. Artana added the pier was built by the Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency financed with the PNPM Pariwisata fund. Having been completed, it was never used by boat owners to raise travelers who would enjoy dolphin sightseeing and snorkeling in the middle of the sea. It happened because the pier was too short, so when the tide was low it was difficult for fishing boats to dock around the pier. Conversely, if the tides went up and the fishermen wanted to take down their boats from the mainland, the boat body even crashed the dock, so it was hazardous for fishermen. Fishermen were then moved to the east of the dock when they were going to take down their boat. Though it was not used by fishermen who transported guests to see dolphin, the pier was taken advantage as an object by visitors wishing to take pictures with the background of ocean view. But since the pier end was damaged, visitors no longer used it. On that account, residents hoped the relevant authorities to immediately repair the damage. “If possible, do not be ignored because it can be used by travelers. Moreover, it was established with people’s money so it will not be in vain. Thus, it must be repaired as soon as possible,” explained Artana confirmed by other residents. (mud)

of moderate damage, while along 114.960 km in damaged condition. “The neighborhood roads or LC roads have been worked on gradually. It is based on the concept in order the increase can spread evenly in all areas of the four subdistricts,” said Winartha. The road improvement project in 2014 would be more concentrated to South Denpasar, for example in the area of Jalan Taman Pancing, Pemogan, Jalan Pulau Kawe, Pedungan and surrounding areas. “The main road like on Jalan Bung Tomo is repaired in 2013. Some of the roads have been repaired last year. For this year, the project is directed to the south area to make it evenly distributed,” he explained.
Meanwhile, the Division Head of Denpasar Highways Office, I Putu Dirgayasa, elaborated the condition of the damaged road along 114.960 km spreading across the four subdistricts. Among others, they included the Pulau Kawe, Taman Pancing, IB Oka, Kebo Iwa Utara, Gunung Catur I and II-A, Penamparan, Tegal Dukuh, Cempaka, Gunung Cemara, Gunung Lempuyang, Pura Demak I, Kertapura, Marlboro II, Badak Agung, Draupadi III-A, Madri, and Pandu. “Meanwhile, Gatsu VI, VI-A and Gatsu IV and IV-A are also in poor condition,” he said. BANGKOK — An environmental and human rights group has charged that Thailand is not adequately addressing severe abuse against Myanmar migrant workers in the Thai fishing industry. The British-based Environmental Justice Foundation said in a report Tuesday that the Thai government has failed to act strongly against human trafficking and that violence is routine in the industry. “Endemic corruption, poor enforcement, inadequate victim support, unacceptable working conditions and deficient migration policy,” have not been tackled by Thai authorities, the group said. Thai Labor Ministry Deputy Permanent Secretary Boontharik Samiti said the government was making a serious effort to protect workers in the fishing industry. “Right now, we are aiming to reduce and eradicate human trafficking. For fisheries, all agencies have collectively come together in an effort to prevent this problem in a sustainable and long-term fashion,” she told The Associated Press by phone from Songkhla, a southern seaboard province. The foundation suggested the United States consider imposing economic sanctions on Thailand, the world’s third-biggest seafood exporter after China and Norway. Thailand’s fishing industry is staffed predominantly by migrants from much poorer neighboring countries, including Cambodia and especially Myanmar. Often the workers have come to Thailand illegally with the help of human traffickers, leaving them little legal protection and large debts to be paid out of their wages. Very few have any sort of contract. “Depending on the amount paid, a trafficked fisherman could often work from one to eight months before earning any wages for himself,” noted a 2011 report by the International Organization for Migration, adding that some may work without pay for years on boats that are serviced by supply ships and rarely return to port. “Migrant workers in the Thai fishing industry, many of them trafficked illegally, are suffering terrible abuses and all too often are denied their basic human rights,” Steve Trent, executive director of the Environmental Justice Foundation, said in a statement. “These people are Thailand’s ‘seafood slaves’ forced to work to prop up the cash-rich fisheries industry,” Trent said, urging governments and the industry to act to stop abuse.

NEW DELHI — India said Wednesday that it will hold national elections from April 7 to May 12, kicking off a vote that many observers see as the most important election in more than 30 years in the world’s largest democracy. A recent poll by the Pew Research Center said 63 percent of Indians prefer BJP over the incumbent Congress Party. JAKARTA - One naval serviceman was killed and 71 people were injured on Wednesday when an explosion shattered an Indonesian naval warehouse stocked with light ammunition, the military’s spokesman said. Iskandar Sitompul also said the blast near the capital Jakarta was believed to have followed an electrical short-circuit in the building. The explosion blew apart the warehouse belonging to an elite naval combat force, spraying victims with shrapnel and pieces of wood and glass.
“Most of them were injured by pieces of wood and glass that pierced them on their cheek, chest and stomach,” Sitompul said. The depot is among naval facilities located on a small island a short distance from Jakarta’s shoreline. Sitompul said one of those injured was a civilian.

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s top Islamic clerical body has issued a religious fatwa against the illegal hunting and trade in endangered animals in the country, which the WWF hailed on Wednesday as the world’s first. The fatwa by the Indonesian Ulema Council declares such activities “unethical, immoral and sinful”, council official Asrorun Ni’am Sholeh told AFP. “All activities resulting in wildlife extinction without justifiable religious grounds or legal provisions are haram (forbidden). These include illegal hunting and trading of endangered animals,” said Sholeh, secretary of the council’s commission on fatwas. “Whoever takes away a life, kills a generation. This is not restricted to humans, but also includes God’s other living creatures, especially if they die in vain.” The country of 250 million people is the world’s most populous Muslim nation, but it remained unclear whether the fatwa would have any practical impact. Indonesia’s vast and unique array of wildlife is under increasing pressure from development, logging and agricultural expansion. The government does not typically react to fatwas by implementing specific policy changes. However, a Forestry Ministry official who asked to remain anonymous told AFP the ministry and the religious council would make a joint announcement regarding the fatwa on March 12, without elaborating
on its content. The WWF called the fatwa the first of its kind in the world, and said the use of religion for wildlife protection “is a positive step forward.” “It provides a spiritual aspect and raises moral awareness which will help us in our work to protect and save the remaining wildlife in the country such as the critically endangered tigers and rhinos,” WWF Indonesia communications director Nyoman Iswara Yoga said. The fatwa was the result of months of dialogue between government officials, conservationists and other stakeholders, said Sholeh, the fatwa commission official. Acknowledging it was not legally binding, Sholeh said in English: “It’s a divine binding.” He said the fatwa was effective from January 22. It was only made public late Tuesday. The fatwa urges the government to effectively monitor ecological protection, review permits issued to companies accused of harming the environment, and bring illegal loggers and wildlife traffickers to justice. The clearing, often illegally, of Indonesia’s once-rich forests for timber extraction or to make way for oil palm or other plantations poses a severe threat to critically endangered species such as the Sumatran tiger, orangutan, and Sumatran elephant. Poachers also target wild elephants for their ivory tusks, for use in traditional Chinese medicines. Under Indonesian law, trafficking in protected animals can result in a maximum of five years in jail and 100 million rupiah ($8,700) fine.

The head of state made the statement at the 42nd anniversary of the National Search and Rescue Agency at the dock of Merak port. Realizing the important task of Basarnas, President Yudhoyono advised the agency to continue to maintain its good coordination and leadership. “Good leadership and control of the operation and coordination will determine the success of Basarnas,” the president noted, adding that the members and volunteers of the agency should continue to improve their technical, physical and mental capabilities. Building national capacities to respond quickly to disasters and save maximum number of lives is an important focus of the National Search and
Rescue Agency. Established on February 28, 1972, Basarnas has 33 chapters in provinces across the country. In conjunction with Basarnas’ anniversary this time, President Yudhoyono also officially launched two 59-meter-long catamaran boats, called “KN Pacitan” and “KB Purworejo” respectively, to be operated by the agency. The new speedboats, with the speed of 29 knots, will be able to operate even in bad weather. The boats also have helipads. On the occasion, there was also save and rescue demonstrations by Basarnas personnel supported by, among other things, two CASA aircraft, two Dauphin helicopters, two BO-105 helicopters, two catamaran rescue boats, two hovercrafts, nine rubber boats, two ambulances, and two amphibious boats. And so begins one of Britain’s most cherished, fabled and downright bizarre sporting traditions. Played annually on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday ever since the late 1600s, and maybe even before, the Royal Shrovetide football game sees thousands of locals from rival sides of a sleepy market town in central England take part in a chaotic and often brutal contest. The aim: To ‘goal’ the ball against scoring posts situated in the middle of a shallow river and three miles apart at either end of town. Injuries and black eyes are common — there have been broken legs and reportedly heart attacks, too. But it’s worth all the pain to have bragging rights over your fierce rivals for the next 12 months. Don’t underestimate its importance to the locals. “It’s chaos, it’s like a riot — an organized riot,” says Dave Leigh, a pub landlord in Ashbourne. “But they live and die by it.” The game is regarded as a carry-over from the “mob football” matches played in the Middle Ages. These matches are believed to have spawned the global sporting phenomenon that is soccer, as
well as rugby. Many British towns have played Shrovetide down the centuries but Ashbourne is one of the few to carry on the tradition. Only twice has it been canceled, in 1968 and 2001 — both times because of an outbreak of foot and mouth disease. It continued through both world wars. And it has had the royal seal of approval — in 1928, the then-Prince of Wales (who would later become King Edward VIII) threw in the ball to start the game. In 2003, Prince Charles had the honor of being the so-called ‘turner-up.’ “Plenty of people seem to have tried over the years to stop this great tradition of Shrovetide,” the Prince said hours before the 2003 game, “but even over the two world wars, the men on active service wrote asking it should be carried on. Now why was it that they did that? Because, they said, it was one of the things they were fighting for, part of the old traditional England that has survived innovations and inventions. “All I can say is you’ve got to keep it going, somehow or other.”

Golden State’s Klay Thompson made a 12-foot turnaround jumper with 0.6 seconds left to secure a 98-96 win at Indiana. Thompson scored 16 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter while Stephen Curry finished with 19 points for the Warriors, who have won five of six. It was their first win at Indiana in seven years.

And so begins one of Britain’s most cherished, fabled and downright bizarre sporting traditions. Played annually on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday ever since the late 1600s, and maybe even before, the Royal Shrovetide football game sees thousands of locals from rival sides of a sleepy market town in central England take part in a chaotic and often brutal contest. The aim: To ‘goal’ the ball against scoring posts situated in the middle of a shallow river and three miles apart at either end of town. Injuries and black eyes are common — there have been broken legs and reportedly heart attacks, too. But it’s worth all the pain to have bragging rights over your fierce rivals for the next 12 months. Don’t underestimate its importance to the locals. “It’s chaos, it’s like a riot — an organized riot,” says Dave Leigh, a pub landlord in Ashbourne. “But they live and die by it.” The game is regarded as a carry-over from the “mob football” matches played in the Middle Ages. These matches are believed to have spawned the global sporting phenomenon that is soccer, as
well as rugby. Many British towns have played Shrovetide down the centuries but Ashbourne is one of the few to carry on the tradition. Only twice has it been canceled, in 1968 and 2001 — both times because of an outbreak of foot and mouth disease. It continued through both world wars. And it has had the royal seal of approval — in 1928, the then-Prince of Wales (who would later become King Edward VIII) threw in the ball to start the game. In 2003, Prince Charles had the honor of being the so-called ‘turner-up.’ “Plenty of people seem to have tried over the years to stop this great tradition of Shrovetide,” the Prince said hours before the 2003 game, “but even over the two world wars, the men on active service wrote asking it should be carried on. Now why was it that they did that? Because, they said, it was one of the things they were fighting for, part of the old traditional England that has survived innovations and inventions. “All I can say is you’ve got to keep it going, somehow or other.”

Golden State’s Klay Thompson made a 12-foot turnaround jumper with 0.6 seconds left to secure a 98-96 win at Indiana. BANGKOK — An environmental and human rights group has charged that Thailand is not adequately addressing severe abuse against Myanmar migrant workers in the Thai fishing industry. The British-based Environmental Justice Foundation said in a report Tuesday that the Thai government has failed to act strongly against human trafficking and that violence is routine in the industry. “Endemic corruption, poor enforcement, inadequate victim support, unacceptable working conditions and deficient migration policy,” have not been tackled by Thai authorities, the group said. Thai Labor Ministry Deputy Permanent Secretary Boontharik Samiti said the government was making a serious effort to protect workers in the fishing industry. “Right now, we are aiming to reduce and eradicate human trafficking. For fisheries, all agencies have collectively come together in an effort to prevent this problem in a sustainable and long-term fashion,” she told The Associated Press by phone from Songkhla, a southern seaboard province. The foundation suggested the United States consider imposing economic sanctions on Thailand, the world’s third-biggest seafood exporter after China and Norway. Thailand’s fishing industry is staffed predominantly by migrants from much poorer neighboring countries, including Cambodia and especially Myanmar. Often the workers have come to Thailand illegally with the help of human traffickers, leaving them little legal protection and large debts to be paid out of their wages. Very few have any sort of contract. “Depending on the amount paid, a trafficked fisherman could often work from one to eight months before earning any wages for himself,” noted a 2011 report by the International Organization for Migration, adding that some may work without pay for years on boats that are serviced by supply ships and rarely return to port. “Migrant workers in the Thai fishing industry, many of them trafficked illegally, are suffering terrible abuses and all too often are denied their basic human rights,” Steve Trent, executive director of the Environmental Justice Foundation, said in a statement. “These people are Thailand’s ‘seafood slaves’ forced to work to prop up the cash-rich fisheries industry,” Trent said, urging governments and the industry to act to stop abuse.

NEW DELHI — India said Wednesday that it will hold national elections from April 7 to May 12, kicking off a vote that many observers see as the most important election in more than 30 years in the world’s largest democracy. The run-up to the election has laid bare widespread disgust in India over corruption and disenchantment with the storied Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty, which has dominated Indian politics since independence from Britain in 1947. The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party, a pro-business, Hindu nationalist bloc led by Narendra Modi, has the momentum heading into the elections. A recent poll by the Pew Research Center said 63 percent of Indians prefer BJP over the incumbent Congress Party. Modi’s chief rival is Rahul Gandhi, the 43-yearold vice president of Congress and scion of the Gandhi family. “The future of Indian democracy is at stake,” said Ajoy Bose, a political analyst in New Delhi. “The distinction is between the decline of India’s oldest political party and an attempt by the BJP with Modi at its helm to rise as an alternative.” The parliamentary election will be held over several weeks for logistical and safety reasons in the country of 1.2 billion people. There are more than 810 million eligible voters this year, an increase of 100
million from five years ago, according to the Election Commission. Vote counting will be held May 16, and most results are expected the same day, Chief Election Commissioner V.S. Sampath said. The dates were finalized based on the onset of India’s blistering summer, school schedules and harvesting season, he said. BJP’s strength ahead of the polls does not necessarily translate into an automatic win. There are dozens of regional parties, as well as the upstart Aam Aadmi Party, or Common Man’s Party, which had a surprisingly strong showing in local elections late last year. And 11 smaller parties joined forces last month, forming a “third front” to challenge Congress and BJP. “A number of smaller regional parties could play an important role in forming a new government in the
event of a split verdict in the elections,” Bose said. Modi’s growing popularity has been a divisive issue in India, where Hindu-Muslim violence has erupted regularly despite the country’s secular constitution. Modi’s supporters say he can revive the country’s ailing economy, pointing to how he turned Gujarat state, where he is chief minister, into an industrial haven over the past 11 years. But critics take a darker view, blaming him for riots in Gujarat in 2002 that killed more than 1,000 people, mostly Muslims. Modi has denied any role in the violence and says he bears no responsibility for the killings. JAKARTA - One naval serviceman was killed and 71 people were injured on Wednesday when an explosion shattered an Indonesian naval warehouse stocked with light ammunition, the military’s spokesman said. Iskandar Sitompul also said the blast near the capital Jakarta was believed to have followed an electrical short-circuit in the building. The explosion blew apart the warehouse belonging to an elite naval combat force, spraying victims with shrapnel and pieces of wood and glass.
“Most of them were injured by pieces of wood and glass that pierced them on their cheek, chest and stomach,” Sitompul said. The depot is among naval facilities located on a small island a short distance from Jakarta’s shoreline. Sitompul said one of those injured was a civilian.

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s top Islamic clerical body has issued a religious fatwa against the illegal hunting and trade in endangered animals in the country, which the WWF hailed on Wednesday as the world’s first. The fatwa by the Indonesian Ulema Council declares such activities “unethical, immoral and sinful”, council official Asrorun Ni’am Sholeh told AFP. “All activities resulting in wildlife extinction without justifiable religious grounds or legal provisions are haram (forbidden). These include illegal hunting and trading of endangered animals,” said Sholeh, secretary of the council’s commission on fatwas. “Whoever takes away a life, kills a generation. This is not restricted to humans, but also includes God’s other living creatures, especially if they die in vain.” The country of 250 million people is the world’s most populous Muslim nation, but it remained unclear whether the fatwa would have any practical impact. Indonesia’s vast and unique array of wildlife is under increasing pressure from development, logging and agricultural expansion. The government does not typically react to fatwas by implementing specific policy changes. However, a Forestry Ministry official who asked to remain anonymous told AFP the ministry and the religious council would make a joint announcement regarding the fatwa on March 12, without elaborating
on its content. The WWF called the fatwa the first of its kind in the world, and said the use of religion for wildlife protection “is a positive step forward.” “It provides a spiritual aspect and raises moral awareness which will help us in our work to protect and save the remaining wildlife in the country such as the critically endangered tigers and rhinos,” WWF Indonesia communications director Nyoman Iswara Yoga said. The fatwa was the result of months of dialogue between government officials, conservationists and other stakeholders, said Sholeh, the fatwa commission official. Acknowledging it was not legally binding, Sholeh said in English: “It’s a divine binding.” He said the fatwa was effective from January 22. It was only made public late Tuesday. The fatwa urges the government to effectively monitor ecological protection, review permits issued to companies accused of harming the environment, and bring illegal loggers and wildlife traffickers to justice. The clearing, often illegally, of Indonesia’s once-rich forests for timber extraction or to make way for oil palm or other plantations poses a severe threat to critically endangered species such as the Sumatran tiger, orangutan, and Sumatran elephant. Poachers also target wild elephants for their ivory tusks, for use in traditional Chinese medicines. Under Indonesian law, trafficking in protected animals can result in a maximum of five years in jail and 100 million rupiah ($8,700) fine.

The head of state made the statement at the 42nd anniversary of the National Search and Rescue Agency at the dock of Merak port. Realizing the important task of Basarnas, President Yudhoyono advised the agency to continue to maintain its good coordination and leadership. “Good leadership and control of the operation and coordination will determine the success of Basarnas,” the president noted, adding that the members and volunteers of the agency should continue to improve their technical, physical and mental capabilities. Building national capacities to respond quickly to disasters and save maximum number of lives is an important focus of the National Search and
Rescue Agency. Established on February 28, 1972, Basarnas has 33 chapters in provinces across the country. In conjunction with Basarnas’ anniversary this time, President Yudhoyono also officially launched two 59-meter-long catamaran boats, called “KN Pacitan” and “KB Purworejo” respectively, to be operated by the agency. The new speedboats, with the speed of 29 knots, will be able to operate even in bad weather. The boats also have helipads. On the occasion, there was also save and rescue demonstrations by Basarnas personnel supported by, among other things, two CASA aircraft, two Dauphin helicopters, two BO-105 helicopters, two catamaran rescue boats, two hovercrafts, nine rubber boats, two ambulances, and two amphibious boats. The announcement came in Li’s speech to the annual session of the National People’s Congress, which meets to approve policies decided by the ruling Communist party. “We must keep economic development as the central task and maintain a proper growth rate,” Li said. “On the basis of careful comparison and repeatedly weighing various factors, as well as considering what is needed and what is possible, we set a growth target of around 7.5 percent.” China’s three decades of rapid industrialisation have transformed its economy and seen incomes soar, but have also brought severe environmental consequences including smog that regularly blankets cities. In his speech Li said he is “declaring war” on pollution, describing it as a “red-
light warning” against inefficiency as he sought to address public concerns on issues from poisoned waterways to food safety. “We will declare war against pollution and fight it with the same determination we battled poverty,” he said. The world’s second-largest economy grew 7.7 percent in 2013, the same as in 2012 -- which was the slowest rate of growth since 1999. Rising prosperity is a key part of the Communist Party’s claim to legitimacy in China, and the government usually sets a conservative economic growth target that it regularly exceeds. The figure is closely watched by analysts for insight into the leadership’s thinking about the economy and how they expect it to perform, as well as what policy initiatives they intend to pursue.
Keeping the target unchanged from last year suggests the government wants to stress stability as it carries out promised economic reforms, analysts said. “My feeling is that on one hand it serves as a signal to stabilise expectations, while on the other it shows policymakers have confidence in maintaining stable momentum in the overall economy,” said Ma Xiaoping, Beijing-based economist for British bank HSBC. The 7.5 percent goal came after soft recent economic data, with a key manufacturing index slipping to an eight-month low in February, the government said Saturday. “We believe China can achieve 7.5 percent GDP growth this year,” economists with Bank of America Merrill Lynch said in a research note on the target, despite what they described as recent “negative news and data” such as manufacturing declines. China’s once regular annual double-digit growth rates have been on a slowing trend, and the 2013 result meant GDP growth had been in single figures for three consecutive years for the first time since 2002.
CANBERRA — Australia’s government rejected a request from Qantas Airways for a $2.7 billion unsecured loan to help the national carrier return to profitability, deciding instead to abolish foreign ownership restrictions, the prime minister said Wednesday. In the wake of Monday’s decision to allow greater foreign ownership of Qantas, Prime Minister Tony Abbott said his ministers had acted on expert advice from accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers to decide that Qantas did not need the line of credit. “We sent in various experts to have a look at Qantas, and the conclusion that we came to based on their advice was that Qantas does not need an unsecured facility from the government,” Abbott told Macquarie Radio on Wednesday. The airline last week posted a first-half loss of 235 million Australian dollars ($211 million) amid tougher competition. Qantas said it would cut 5,000 jobs in a bid to slash costs by AU$2 billion over three years. Qantas’ credit rating was downgraded from investment grade to junk in December when it warned of a looming interim loss of up to AU$300 million and job cuts. The government plans to repeal legislation that prevents foreign airlines from holding more than 35 percent of Qantas and any single foreign investor from holding more than a 25 percent stake. The legislation also mandates 51 percent Australian ownership. Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce on Wednesday welcomed the government’s decision to allow more foreign investment, which he said would “level the playing field” with its major competitor Virgin Australia. Virgin Australia is 64 percent owned by three state-owned carriers: Air New Zealand, Etihad Airways and Singapore Airlines. Joyce argues that foreign governments were funding Virgin Australia’s “loss-making strategy in the domestic market.” Joyce said a government-backed debt facility would have been an interim measure to correct distortions in the aviation market created by restrictions on ownership of Qantas. “We are a very healthy airline, we’re in a very strong position, but we have to manage our way through this loss of rating and we have a plan to do that,” he said. Virgin Australia has opposed any government loan to Qantas, but said it had no issue with greater foreign ownership of Australia’s largest airline. Abbott has not yet won the support of senators outside government whom he needs to pass the changes through parliament. Opposition parties have voiced objections to any reforms that could send Qantas jobs overseas. The main opposition Labor Party prefers a government loan to secure Qantas’ future, but regional Australian airline Rex warns that such a loan would distort the Australian aviation market.

SINGARAJA - The pier established in the area of Lovina Beach tourist attraction, Buleleng, collapsed after eroded by tidal waves since the bad weather hit Buleleng lately. Pier end on the mainland is now broken and cannot be passed through by travelers. The damage of wooden pier is feared to get worse if the government does not make any efforts to repair. As field observation on Tuesday (Mar 4), pier foundation on the mainland looked to have been eroded by ocean waves. Swift scour of the waves had eroded the foundation so the pier end was broken. Luckily, the piles supporting the pier remained strong, so the pier was still standing intact. However, travelers were hard to pass as the pier end on the mainland was broken and disconnected from the bridge jutting out to sea. Travelers did not dare to cross the pier for fear of the pier would collapse as eroded by ocean waves. A resident, Nyoman Artana, when met at location said the pier was known to have collapsed after the adverse weather condition hit the area within the past few days. Before the pier collapsed, he had seen the foundation at the pier end had started to be eroded by sea waves. A few days later, the pier end was found to have collapsed and came off from pier arrangement jutting into the sea. He and other residents suspected the pier collapsed because the foundation was not strong enough to hold the ocean waves. “Since
the beginning of the adverse weather, the foundation started to erode and finally collapsed so the pier looked to disconnect to its structure,” he said. Artana added the pier was built by the Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency financed with the PNPM Pariwisata fund. Having been completed, it was never used by boat owners to raise travelers who would enjoy dolphin sightseeing and snorkeling in the middle of the sea. It happened because the pier was too short, so when the tide was low it was difficult for fishing boats to dock around the pier. Conversely, if the tides went up and the fishermen wanted to take down their boats from the mainland, the boat body even crashed the dock, so it was hazardous for fishermen. Fishermen were then moved to the east of the dock when they were going to take down their boat. Though it was not used by fishermen who transported guests to see dolphin, the pier was taken advantage as an object by visitors wishing to take pictures with the background of ocean view. But since the pier end was damaged, visitors no longer used it. On that account, residents hoped the relevant authorities to immediately repair the damage. “If possible, do not be ignored because it can be used by travelers. Moreover, it was established with people’s money so it will not be in vain. Thus, it must be repaired as soon as possible,” explained Artana confirmed by other residents. (mud)

He said the existing road under the authority of Bali Province reached along 83.896 kilometers and spread across 17 road sections. Similarly, the length of national road in Denpasar reached 33.320 km made of 17 road sections. The Denpasar Public Works mentioned the length of road under its authority reached 563 km. Of that total amount, 307.693 km was in good condition. As for 140.440 km was in the category
of moderate damage, while along 114.960 km in damaged condition. “The neighborhood roads or LC roads have been worked on gradually. It is based on the concept in order the increase can spread evenly in all areas of the four subdistricts,” said Winartha. The road improvement project in 2014 would be more concentrated to South Denpasar, for example in the area of Jalan Taman Pancing, Pemogan, Jalan Pulau Kawe, Pedungan and surrounding areas. “The main road like on Jalan Bung Tomo is repaired in 2013. PARIS — Top diplomats from the major players trying to find an end to the crisis in Ukraine are gathering in Paris on Wednesday as tensions simmered over the Russian military takeover of the strategic Crimean Peninsula. The envoys from Russia, Ukraine, the U.S., Britain and France are not necessarily all at the same table, but French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said everyone has been working non-stop for a diplomatic solution over tensions in Ukraine. “We have a principle of firmness but at the same time of searching for dialogue,” Fabius said as he stood alongside his Ukrainian counterpart, making his first trip abroad in the new post. Russia took over Crimea on Saturday, placing troops around its ferry, military bases and border posts.

NEW YORK — Its $310 tasting menu makes Per Se one of New York City’s most expensive restaurants, but its “C’’ grade from health inspectors puts it near the bottom of the heap when it comes to sanitary violations. Per Se got 42 violation points when it was inspected Feb. 19, city health department records showed. Infractions included failure to hold hot food at 140 degrees and a lack of a hand-washing facility near the food preparation area. Per Se representatives did not immediately return a call seeking comment, but the restaurant will have a chance to argue its case at a hearing. Until then it must post a sign saying its grade is pending. The 10-year-old Per Se is the East Coast outlet of Thomas Keller’s French Laundry in Yountville, California. Studies show big promise for HIV prevention drug Associated Press Writer
Exciting research suggests that a shot every one to three months may someday give an alternative to the daily pills that some people take now to cut their risk of getting HIV. The experimental drug has only been tested for prevention in monkeys, but it completely protected them from infection in two studies reported at an AIDS conference on Tuesday. “This is the most exciting innovation in the field of HIV prevention that I’ve heard recently,” said Dr. Robert Grant, an AIDS expert at the Gladstone Institutes, a foundation affiliated with the University of California, San Francisco. “Both groups are showing 100 percent protection” with the drug, Grant said of the two groups of researchers. “If it works and proves to be safe, it would allow for HIV to be prevented with periodic injections, perhaps every three months.” Until a vaccine is developed, condoms are the best way to prevent infection with the AIDS virus and many other sexually
spread diseases. But not everyone uses them, or does so all the time, so public health officials have pursued other prevention options. A drug used to treat people with HIV — Gilead Science’s Truvada — also is used to help prevent infection in people who don’t have the virus. A big study in gay men a few years ago found it could cut this risk by up to 90 percent, depending on how faithfully people take the daily pills. The new research tested something that could make this type of prevention much more practical — a long-acting experimental drug made by GlaxoSmithKline PLC. The studies tested it in
macaques exposed to a humanmonkey version of HIV. Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention gave six monkeys shots of the drug every four weeks; six others got dummy shots. All were exposed to the virus twice a week for 11 weeks. The monkeys who got the fake treatment were readily infected “but the animals that received the long-acting drug remained protected,” said study leader Gerardo Garcia-Lerma of the CDC. The results mirror what was seen in the CDC’s early research in monkeys on Truvada, the pill that’s available for HIV prevention now.

Hotel occupancy rates down Antara
DENPASAR - The occupancy rates of star rated hotels in Bali averaged 57.76 percent in January down 4.77 percentage points from 62.53 percent in December, 2013. “Despite the decline, the rate was still profitable. He said the highest occupancy rate in January was recorded by star rated hotels in the regency of Tabanan though declining to 71 percent from 73.13 percent a month earlier The second highest occupancy rate was 63.11 percent recorded by hotels in in the regency of Bandung also declining from 67.65 percent in the previous month , followed by hotels in Gianyar at 53.74 percent

There are also villa houses for rent in rural areas with no official licenses. Bali is the country’s most visited tourist destination, contributing to the country’s earnings from the tourism sector.

Sunar Agus, a top prison official in Bali, said he visited 36-year-old Corby on Monday evening at her residence on the resort island of Bali. The visit followed the airing of a TV documentary in Australia on Sunday that featured an interview with Corby’s sister Mercedes, which has angered Indonesian authorities. “We saw that she wasn’t mentally stable,” said Agus, chief of the Bali Corrections Division which is in charge of overseeing Corby’s parole. “She seemed scared when I started a dialogue and she tried to kill herself. She was able to grab a knife. But her family was able to stop her,” he told reporters. Agus said the scene took place after the officials told her the documentary could see her thrown back in jail. “She said she was stressed from being followed by reporters all the time,” Agus said. AFP was not able to reach Corby or her relatives for comment. The television documentary by Channel Seven has raised hackles in Indonesia, where officials have suggested Corby was seeking to profit from her crime via media exposure. There has been unconfirmed speculation of a lucrative deal with Channel Seven, which the broadcaster has denied. “There is a big possibility (that Corby’s parole) will be reconsidered,” Indonesian justice minister Amir Syamsuddin was quoted by the daily Kompas as saying on Monday. Corby’s saga has riveted Australians and generated significant sympathy in her home country.

Mangrove contaminated by fuel pipeline leakage Bali Post
MANGUPURA - Condition of mangroves along the entrance area to Benoa Harbor is quiet apprehensive. Dozens of mangrove trees have blackened, from the roots to the stem. Their leaves are no longer freshly green, but have changed into yellowish as if they had been dead. Such allblack spectacle is coupled with a distinctive odor of oil. It happens because the water around the almost-dead plant has already been contaminated by yellow oil liquid. The Head of Ngurah Rai Grand Forest Park (Tahura), Mochtar Irwan Abdullah, justified that dozens of mangrove trees in the area of Benoa Harbor were contaminated by oil waste. According to him, such condition had occurred since January 25, 2014 due to leakage on the fuel pipeline owned by PT Indonesia Power. The contaminated area reached about 75 hectares. However, the worst contamination causing the yellowing leaves was only about 25 hectares. “There are some mangrove trees, approximately 25-30 trees, suffered yellowing leaves as a result of oil waste due to leaked pipeline owned by PT Indonesia Power on January 25, 2014,” he said. Irwan explained the location of waste contamination was within the
authority of Benoa Harbor master or outside the forest area of the Ngurah Rai Grand Forest Park (Tahura). Nevertheless, his party continued to monitor, including evaluating the causes of the yellowing leaves of the mangroves. From the monitoring made, PT Indonesia Power, according to him, had installed oil boom to restrict and blockade in order not to spread to the area of Ngurah Rai Grand Forest Park. “I do want this can be carried out soon so it does not spread to the adjacent area of the Grand Forest Park. Otherwise, it can be hazardous. I observed the efforts to localize the area. Then, the oil spills were entirely sucked through a straw. But, when having a closer look, the roots are black,” he explained. When asked if the nearly-dead mangroves were also caused by the
toll bridge (JDP) construction project, Irwan declined to comment. According to him, it should be asked to those who established the toll bridge. Meanwhile, PT Indonesia Power through its Spokesperson, Made Sukarma, did not argue if the contamination in the mangrove forest area around the Benoa Harbor was caused by the leakage of pipeline owned by his company. “However, the problem is over. We just attended a coordinating meeting with the Denpasar Environment Agency, Bali Forestry Agency, Grand Forest Park, Harbor Authority (Pelindo), Benoa Harbor Master and Mangrove, and we will plant mangrove trees this month. Unfortunately, some people were reluctant to vaccinate their pet dogs and let them roam around intentionally. “When their stray dogs will be eliminated, they even rejected it,” said Suarjaya. So, to avoid the elimination, people should take another measure by vaccinating the stray dogs. For this action, the government also needed the help of the community. Therefore, Suarjaya expected people at least to routinely vaccinate their pets and not to let theirs roam around. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

NEW YORK — John Travolta has apologized to Tony Award winner Idina Menzel for mangling the pronunciation of her name during the Oscars telecast, saying he’d been “beating myself up” over it. On Sunday night’s Academy Awards show, Travolta took the stage and introduced Menzel, but he seemed to say “Adele Dazeem” instead. An estimated 43 million people were watching, and social media has been mocking him relentlessly ever since, especially since he attended rehearsals. Menzel, who played Maureen Johnson in “Rent” onstage and on screen and Elphaba in “Wicked,” seemed unperturbed by the flub as she sang out “Let It Go,” from the animated film “Frozen.” Travolta said in a statement released Tuesday: “I’ve been beating myself up all day. annual movie celebration that honors winners with golden popcorn trophies is scheduled for April 13 at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles. “After eight years of intense negotiations, I am honored to announce I am hosting MTV’s second most prestigious awards show,” O’Brien joked in a state-
ment. It marks the first time O’Brien has hosted the MTV Movie Awards. He previously hosted the Primetime Emmy Awards in 2002 and 2006. Past hosts of the MTV Movie Awards have included Jimmy Fallon, Aziz Ansari, Russell Brand, Rebel Wilson and Sarah Silverman.
