Turkish police detain over 440 people in anti-IS operation ISTANBUL — Turkey’s anti-terrorism police have detained over 440 people for alleged links to the Islamic State group, the state-run agency reported Sunday. The Anadolu Agency said 60 IS suspects, the vast majority of them foreigners, were taken into custody early Sunday in the capital, Ankara. It said a total of 445 people were detained in simultaneous pre-dawn police operations that spanned several cities, including Istanbul and Gaziantep, near the border with Syria. The largest operation was in the southeast province of Sanliurfa, where police took into custody more than 100 suspects from multiple addresses and found materials relating to Islamic State militants. Security forces also apprehended nine suspects who were allegedly preparing an attack in the northwestern city of Izmir.
Anadolu did not give the nationalities of all those detained but there were 10 minors among the foreigners detained in Istanbul and the northwestern province of Kocaeli. Turkey, which last year endured a failed coup attempt and dozens of bloody attacks linked to IS or Kurdish militants, has been stepping up its anti-terrorism efforts. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for a New Year Eve mass shooting at an Istanbul nightclub that killed 39 people. It claims to have multiple cells in Turkey.
Turkey is a member of the NATO alliance and the U.S-led coalition against IS. It shares borders with Syria and Iraq, two war-torn nations at the heart of the fight against IS militants. Turkish forces have been deployed in Syria since August with the aim of clearing a border patch of IS militants and Syrian Kurdish fighters that Ankara considers related to its own Kurdish insurgency. Circulation of gorilla tobacco getting massive Two dealers arrested
MANGUPURA - The circulation of ‘gorilla tobacco’ and ‘herbal smoke tea’ is increasingly prevalent in Bali. The Narcotic Investigation Unit of Badung police are not standing idly by but have arrested seom dealers. On Monday (Jan. 23), police arrested two dealers; a 33 year old with the P.A.S. on Jalan Imam Bonjol Gang Nyuh Sudamala, Denpasar and a 38 year old with the initials I. on Jalan Gunung Andakasa, Gang Soka, Denpasar. Chief of the Badung Police, Ruddi Setiawan, accompanied by chief of the Narcotics Investigation Unit, Djoko Hariadi said on Thursday (Feb. 2) that after testing the gorilla tobacco in the forensics laboratory, it was declared negative of narcotics and suspected of being a conterfeit item. Meanwhile the herbal smoke tea tobacco tested positive as a class one narcotic. The suspect PAS had been living on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, in Mumbul, South Kuta. The evidence secured by police consisted of six plastic boxes of herbal smoke tea weighing 150.6 grams. “This tobacco contains preparations of ABFubinaca listed as a class one narcotic and as such vioates the Ministery of Health’s laws. Here is now the emmergence fo the circulation of gorilla tobacco”, he added.
Disclosure of this case, said the police chief, originated from reports from the public that someone had been circulating tobacco that had the ability to ‘get people high’ like marijuana does. Based on this information, Djoko and his team conducted an investigation and shadowed suspects. On Monday at 13:00, police arrested one suspect in his dorm room on Jalan Imam Bonjol, West Denpasar. During the search, the officers secured evidence consisting of six plastic boxes of herbal smoke tea with a total weight of 150.6 grams. The goods were found in a backpack belonging to the suspect. “The suspect admitted that the tobacco was to be sold and that the goods had been purchased online. One box weighs 5 grams and is sold for IDR 250,000”, said said Djoko. Suspect I.D, was then arrested on Jalan Gunung Andakasa Gang Soka at 19:30. Police seized total of 10 plastic boxes of herbal smoke tea weighing 150.6 grams in total. Police arrested the suspect when he was in his rented house where police found evidence in the suspect’s backpack. . I.D. admitted to be distributing the marijuana-like tobacco. “The suspect purchased the tobacco online and in the same way that meth dealers do, he planned to have the goods delivered to one place and payment transferred digitally”, he said. Division Head of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, Tabanan Agriculture Agency, I Made Arya Putra, said on Thursday (Feb. 2) that last year just 53,000 dogs were vaccinated in Tabanan, so they plan to increse the numbers this year in order to corresond to the growing dog population. DENPASAR - Information circulating on social media sites about the United States Embassy having declared that there is the potential for a terrorist attack in Bali that would target nightclubs and shopping centers appears to be unfounded. When contacted for a confirmation of this hearsay, Spokesman for the Bali Police, Hengky Widjaja, stated that there has been no official information reagrding such a warning. “If there has in fact been such a warning, there must instructions and attention from the national police headquarters. So far, there has been no such information”, said Hengky on Friday (Feb. 3). Nevertheless, continued Hengky, Balinese people are urged to remain vigilant. However people should not panic in the face of uncertain information. “If we panic and this is seen by travelers, this will disrupt us whereas such a threat is not necessarily true”, he said. People’s vigilance must be encouraged and increased. If there
is something suspicious, Hengky asked that it be reported immediately. Maintaining security in Bali must be the priority of the people. Moreover, Balinese people on the Island of the Gods are united to protect Bali from external threats. Clashes amongst fellow Balinese must also be avoided, he said. “Even though people outside Bali make a scene, Balinese people should join in. As a tourist destination, Bali should remain safe and conducive to peace”, he said. Bali police continue to improve preemptive and preventive measures and to assign intelligence officers. Since there has been no instruction related to any warning, police authorities are not on special standby. Although the information is vague, his institution is not ignoring it and is still taking action. “Probably the locations mentioned are just a decoy. The target may be different. DENPASAR - Denpasar and Singaraja experienced relatively high inflation rate during the period of January 2017. Such high inflation rate is triggered by many factors, such as the price hike of cayenne pepper, vehicle registration renewal fee and wage of domestic workers. This was revealed in the official release submitted by the Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Bali, Adi Nugroho, on Wednesday (Feb. 1). “Inflation rate in Denpasar during the period of January 2017 reached 1.39 percent and Singaraja records the inflation rate of 1.79 percent,” he said. Inflation in these two major cities, said Adi, gets the attention of BPS Bali because it is higher than the national inflation rate reaching 0.394 percent. Of the ten major commodities contributing to inflation in Denpasar, the increase in vehicle registration renewal fee of 105.76 percent has contributed the most. It is followed by price hike of cayenne pepper reaching 72.32 percent and domestic worker wage increase of 2.27 percent. “Other commodities contributing to inflation are credit of mobile phone, electricity tariff, price of cars, non-subsidized fuel, cigarette filters and anchovy,”
he added. Adi continued that commodities contributing to inflation rate in Singaraja included the price hike of cayenne pepper, electricity tariff, vehicle registration renewal fee, chicken, non-subsidized fuel, beans, credit of mobile phone, tuna, egg and spinach. In addition, he also presented the development of cumulative value of export commodities from Bali which increased from USD 498,681,698 during the period from January to December 2015 to USD 505,119,761 during the period from January to December 2016. In other words, the export value of Bali increased as much as 1.29 percent. The countries becoming the major export markets of Bali are the United States, Australia, Japan, Singapore and China. “The US still occupies the highest percentage namely 25.52 percent followed by Australia at 9.19 percent,” he said while hoping that America’s policy under the leadership of Donald Trump will remain in favor of the export growth from Bali Province. Adi Nugroho added that the presence of micro and small industry in Bali Province also experienced positive growth in 2016, reaching 11.56 percent. German tourist sentenced to five years and eight months For posession of crystal meth- making equipment DENPASAR - Do you still remember the German that police said had been in posession of crystalmeth making equiment and ingredients? Defendant Benjamin Bailer was convicted on Thursday (Feb. 2) and sentenced to five years and eight months in jail by a panel of judges led by Ekstar Oktavi.
The Denpasar District Court, also fined the defendant IDR 1 billion, with a subsidiary of three months in prison. The sentence was less than the seven years, and finr of IDR 1 billion and 8 month subsiduary time that public prosecutor Paul had requested. The judge charged the
defendant under Article 112 paragraph 1 of the Law on Narcotics. After hearing the verdict, the prosecutor and legal counsel of the defendant, Bernardin et al, and the defendant immediately accepted the judge’s verdict and signed the acceptance form. To note, German citizen Benja-
min Bailer was found in posession of both crystal meth-making equipment as well as 0.71 grams of crystal meth found on the side tabel of the defendants room onteh second floor. The defendant claimed that he wanted the crystoal meth for his own personal use and learned hwo to make more form the internet. In

GIANYAR - There are a total of 13 areas throughout Ubud that are categorized as developed. Ubud is visited by thousands of travelers every day who come to enjoy the arts and the culture of homestays. Behind Ubud’s great appeal the government is doing little to repair damaged infrasturcture in the region. Road damage is the most obvious infrasturcture issue in Ubud. Almost all the sidewalks in the area are damaged from having never been repaired over the years. There are even giant holes in some sidewalks. Such conditions are truly unfortunate given how many travellwers come here to walk the streets and enjoy the beauty of the area. Head of the Gianyar Tourism Office, A.A. Bagus Ari Brahmanta, when contacted on this matter admitted that Ubid’s infrastructure needs the attention fo the government. The Tourism Ofice he said has been coordinating with the public works department to prorotize infrastucture repair in Ubud. “We have reported this matter to the governemnt, and the district road sections will soon be repaired”, he said. He added that 13 villages in Ubud out of Gianyar’s 25 villages are categorized as developed. “These are developed tourism villages so we need to improve their quality, such as repairing roads and damaged sidewalks. Obviously, we have coordinated with the district and provincial Public Works Agency”, he said. Outside of Ubud, there are seven villages which are developing tourism villages, and five vother villages are included in the development plan. “From a total of 25 tourism villages, five villages are new additions planned to be included as tourism village, but their potential will be reviewed again. They are: Negari hamlet (Singapadu Tengah, Sukawati, Singapadu Kaler, Kedisan hamlet and Kendran Manuaba hamlet, Tegallalang) and Marga hamlet, Payangan”, he explained. Head of the Gianyar Tourism Office affirmed that the government of Gianyar has given special attention to the regions tat have been developed into tourism villages. In the development of tourism villages, communities are directly involved as players, not just as spectators. “So, in addition to really touching people, the effort to provide guidance for tourism villages can also be used as a form of cultural preservation, especially Gianyar that that is famous for art and culture,” he said. BANGLI - Residents of Madya hamlet, Terunyan, Kintamani, are still facing a clean water shortages. Local people are relying on rainwater to meet their daily needs. During the rainy seaon, residents collect rainwater in cisterns. Resident of Madya hamlet, Wayan Santep, said that most of his fellow residents collect rainwater using permanent cisterns, while several other residents use tarpaulins. The water collected during the rainy season only lasts for a few months. Usually by May, residents living behind the hills are forced to turn to water from Lake Batur to meet their dailly needs. “During the dry season, we walk to the lake to fetch water for the necessities of life like bathing and giving to our livestock as drinking
water. We too consume the lake water”, he said on Friday (Feb. 3). He explained that he and his neighbours usually set off for the lake to collect water early in the morning as it takes two hours to get there and back and Madya hamlets residents need to hike up and down Terunyan Hill. Purchasing water is simply not possible for them because the road to Madya is severly damaged so trucks cannot get to their hamlet. The road that was created through the TMMD program in 2014 is so badly damaged that cars cannot use it. The road has never been repaved since it was first created. “Vehicles from lower areas cannot make it up here because of the severe damage to the road”, he added. (kmb40)

Tensions between Tehran and Washington have risen since a recent Iranian ballistic missile test which prompted U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration to impose sanctions on individuals and entities linked to the Revolutionary Guards. Trump’s national security adviser Michael Flynn said the Washington was putting Iran on notice over its “destabilising activity”, and Trump tweeted Tehran was “playing with fire” “We are working day and night to protect Iran’s security,” head of Revolutionary Guards’ aerospace unit, Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh was quoted as saying by Tasnim news agency. “If we see smallest misstep from the enemies, our roaring missiles will fall on their heads,” he added. Despite the heated words, U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Saturday he was not considering raising the number of U.S. forces in the Middle East to address Iran’s “misbehavior”, but warned that the world would not ignore Iranian activities. Semnan province on Saturday to test missile and radar systems and to “showcase the power of Iran’s revolution and to dismiss the sanctions,” according to the force’s website. Dismissing Trump’s comments that “nothing is off the table” in dealing with Tehran, the commander of Iran’s ground forces said on Saturday that the Islamic Republic has been hearing such threats since its 1979 revolution. “The defence capability and the offensive prowess of Iran’s armed forces would make America or any other enemy regretful of any incursion,” Ahmad Reza Pourdastan was quoted as saying by ISNA. BALLISTIC TEST Iranian state news agencies reported that home-made missile systems, radars, command and control centres, and cyber warfare systems would be tested in Saturday’s drill. Iran has one of the Middle East’s largest missile programmes and held a similar exercise in December to showcase its defence systems, including radars, anti-missile defence units, and short and medium-
range missiles. Tehran confirmed on Wednesday that it had test-fired a new ballistic missile, but said the test did not breach the Islamic Republic’s nuclear agreement with world powers or a U.N. Security Council resolution endorsing the pact. Iran has test-fired several ballistic missiles since the nuclear deal in 2015, but the latest test was the first since Trump entered the White House. Trump said during his election campaign that he would stop Iran’s missile programme. The United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting on Tuesday and recommended the missile testing be studied at committee level. The new U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, called the test “unacceptable”. The Security Council resolution was adopted to buttress the deal under which Iran curbed its nuclear activities to allay concerns they could be used to develop atomic bombs, in exchange for relief from economic sanctions. The resolution urged Tehran to refrain from work on ballistic missiles designed to deliver nuclear weapons. Critics say the resolution’s language does not make this obligatory. MANILA - The Philippine government derided Catholic bishops on Sunday as “out of touch” after they used weekend sermons to attack a war on drugs they said had created a “reign of terror” for the poor. Members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) had dramatised President Rodrigo Duterte’s campaign and, instead of criticising, should focus on contributing to the “reign of peace” that innocent people now felt, presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella said. The church assailed bloodshed that had caused suffering, and said killing people was not the way to deal with illegal drugs. In a pastoral letter read out on Saturday and repeated to congregations at churches on Sunday, bishops said it was disturbing that many Filipinos were indifferent to the killings, or even approved of them. Abella, a former pastor, said the war on drugs had made the country safer, “far from the ‘terror’ the bishops paint rather dramatically.” “The officials of the CBCP are apparently out of touch with the sentiments of the faithful who overwhelmingly support the changes in the Philippines,” Abella said in a statement. More than 7,600 people have been killed since Duterte unleashed a ferocious crackdown seven months ago, more than 2,500 in police raids and sting operations. Human rights groups believe many other deaths that police had attributed to vigilantes were carried out by assassins likely colluding with police. The government and police vehemently deny extrajudicial killings have occurred. The CBCP’s message was read at numerous churches in Manila attended by Reuters, though not all. Church sources said the Archdiocese of Manila issued a circular telling parishes to read the pastoral letter, a copy of which was obtained by Reuters prior to the first readings. The drugs war is a contentious issue, with some bishops keen to make a stand and others hesitant to risk a backlash by criticising a campaign that enjoys broad public support. Duterte has routinely attacked the Church, and as recently as this week called for a “showdown” with priests whom he has accused of having wives, engaging in homosexual acts, graft and child abuse. SHANGHAI - China’s central bank surprised financial markets on Friday by raising short-term interest rates on the first day back from a long holiday, in a further sign of policy tightening as the economy shows signs of steadying. While the rate increases were modest, they reinforced views that Chinese authorities are intent on both containing capital outflows and reining in risks to the financial system created by years of debtfueled stimulus. Higher interest rates could prod debt-laden firms into deleveraging, though at the risk of stunting growth. “It appears to be an intent to control a real estate bubble. It could also be aimed at arresting the yuan’s depreciation, although it is on the reverse repo they touched upon and the impact remains to be seen,” said Naoto Saito, chief economic researcher at the Daiwa Institute of Research In Tokyo. “All in all, it comes across as a move to tweak interest rate levels to accompany a broader monetary policy shift.” The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) raised the interest rate on open market operation reverse repurchase agreements (repos) by 10 basis points, effective on Feb. 3. The comments were made in an essay published by China Finance, a PBOC-affiliated magazine, through the messaging service WeChat. Analysts said the tightening of primarily money market rates suggested the PBOC wanted to retain policy flexibility as it balances the need to keep the economy from slowing again. Other moves in recent months had signalled that Beijing was eyeing a gradual shift from its loose policy stance. In late January, the PBOC raised rates on its medium-term loan facility (MLF) for the first time since it debuted the liquidity tool in 2014. It was the first time it has raised one of its policy interest rates since July 2011. Analysts expect any further steps to be gradual as policymakers weigh their impact on economic growth, and believe the PBOC will be in no hurry to raise the policy lending rate for now. The one-year policy lending rate was last cut in October 2015 to 4.35 percent. “China’s economic recovery is still shaky, while the global economic situation is unstable, so raising open market rates is more appropriate than raising benchmark rates,” said Li Huiyong, chief economist at Shenwan Hongyuan Securities. “It’s a flexible tool, which can be easily reversed if China’s economy shows signs weakness again.”(rtr)

World business grows as it faces upcoming risks
LONDON - Global businesses started 2017 on a solid footing, surveys showed on Friday, thriving ahead of a myriad of political risks in the coming year. Fears of a growing protectionist agenda in the United States, whether national elections across Europe upset the status quo and just how fractious Britain’s divorce proceedings from the European Union become, are all expected to weigh in the months ahead. Yet so far those risks seem to have been mostly ignored with firms from Asia to Europe to the United States increasing or at least largely maintaining activity. Euro zone businesses started 2017 by increasing activity at the same multi-year record pace they set in December while the U.S. non-farm payroll report showed job growth surging more than expected in January as construction firms and retailers ramped up hiring. “Overall while this report is further evidence that the (U.S.) labour market is buoyant the continued slow pace of wage growth means that the (Federal Reserve) will feel under no great pressure to step up
the pace of monetary tightening,” economists at Lloyds Bank told clients in a note. China’s factory activity grew for a seventh month and while India’s services business contracted for a third month as firms struggled to recover from a government crackdown on currency in circulation, the pace slowed. “The outlook for this year is reasonably bright despite all the risks. The numbers for January have generally been quite positive,” said Andrew Kenningham, chief global economist at Capital Economics. Growth in Britain’s services sector slowed for the first time in four months in January, dipping just below its long-run average, as businesses battled the sharpest rise in costs in more than five years. But on Thursday the Bank of England sharply revised up its growth forecast for 2017 to 2.0 percent, a view held by only the most optimistic forecaster in a Reuters poll of 50 economists taken last month. Britain’s economy unexpectedly outpaced all its major peers last year, wrongfooting those who expected an immediate hit from June’s Brexit vote.
The Markit/CIPS British services Purchasing Managers’ Index dropped to a three-month low of 54.5 last month from December’s 15-month high, at the bottom end of a range of forecasts in a Reuters poll of economists, but Markit said the PMIs still point to first quarter growth of 0.5 percent. “Despite the slightly disappointing outcome this remains a very strong report,” said James Knightley, senior economist at ING. IHS Markit’s final composite PMI for the euro zone, seen as a good guide to growth, held at 54.4. It has not been higher since May 2011 and has remained above the 50 mark dividing growth from contraction since mid-2013. That points to first quarter expansion of 0.4 percent, Markit said, matching the median prediction in a Reuters poll. A similar survey from the U.S. showed non-manufacturing growth dipped marginally last month. China’s factory activity expanded for the seventh straight month in January, giving Beijing more room to tackle chronic imbalances in the economy. As being impure, any fruits cultivated in the area like bananas cannot to be taken advantage as a means of ritual oblation, but should only be consumed. A signboard reading ‘Polygamy Area’ is installed to mark this land and indeed made special by residents. Any residents daring to violate the rules set forth in the customary bylaw or awig-awig of Penglipuran, they must consequently be willing to be ostracized and occupy the area with their wife. Not only that, they will also be subject to some other social sanctions. They are not allowed to cross the number of certain roads in the village area. Facing new challenger, Merkel rallies troublesome Bavarian ally
BERLIN - Chancellor Angela Merkel meets her Bavarian allies on Sunday for two days of talks aimed at rallying their troubled conservative alliance to take on the re-energised Social Democrats in a September election she expects to be “tough like no other”.
Horst Seehofer, leader of the Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU), sister party to Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has been a thorn in her side for much of the last two years, pressing for a cap on migrants that she is unwilling to support. But a spectacular revival in the Social Democrats’ fortunes, after they nominated former European Parliament president Martin Schulz as party leader last week, is forcing the conservative “Union” allies to bind together if they are to hold on to power. “Seehofer has to end his onslaught against Merkel if the Union wants to have any chance at all,” said Forsa pollster Manfred Guellner. A survey by another pollster, Infratest dimap, on Thursday showed support for the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) jumped by 8 points to 28 percent, the highest since the last federal election in
2013, following Schulz’s nomination. The CDU/CSU alliance remained ahead on 34 percent, but worryingly for Merkel the poll showed Schulz beating her comfortably in a theoretical headto-head contest. Seehofer’s prime concern has been holding onto the CSU’s absolute majority in Bavaria in a regional election in 2018, when he is worried about losing votes to the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD). However, the revival of the SPD is focusing attention in the CSU, which needs a strong CDU to retain the national clout that gives it sway in Bavaria. Likewise, Merkel needs the CSU to perform well in the federal election if she is to retain power. The fact that Merkel is carving two days out of her schedule to spend on the meeting in Munich underlines the importance she places on improving relations between the allies. Seehofer, who has been relentless in his criticism of her decision in 2015 to open Germany’s doors to a wave of migrants from the Middle East, must now convince Bavarians she is the right candidate for chancellor in the Sept. 24 election. CAIRO - The father of the machete-wielding man who was shot by a guard as he tried to enter Paris’s Louvre museum said on Saturday his son was not an Islamist and the French were only accusing him of terrorism to excuse the brutality used to stop him. Abdullah Reda al-Hamamy, an Egyptian, was shot several times after attacking soldiers outside the museum crying “Allahu Akbar” on Friday, in what President Francois Hollande called a terrorist attack. Al-Hamamy was initially feared to be close to death but doctors at the hospital where he is being treated no longer consider his life in danger, the Paris prosecutor’s office said on Saturday. Paint spray cans - but no explosives - were found in his back pack. Back in Egypt, Hamamy’s father, Reda Al Refaai, said he had
learned of his son’s case from Facebook and was still not aware of his fate. “Is he alive? Is he dead? Was it really him?” he asked Reuters. “For them to say in the end that he is a terrorist is nonsense ... This is a cover up so they don’t have to apologise or justify the acts of this soldier who used brute force with a poor young man of 29.” Al-Hamamy’s uncle, Riyad alRefaai, said: “I find it incomprehensible that a young man on his way to commit a terrorist act only has a knife with him. JAKARTA - Australian army chief Angus Campbell will meet Indonesian military leaders in Jakarta on Wednesday, after defence cooperation was suspended last month over “insulting” teaching material found at an Australian base. Campbell is due to meet Indonesian military (TNI) chief, Gatot Nurmantyo and army chief of staff Mulyono, TNI spokesman Wuryanto said. Indonesia’s military chief declared the rupture in military ties after an Indonesian officer found “offensive” teaching material while on a language training course in Australia late last year. Nurmantyo said that the material “discredited the TNI, the nation of Indonesia and even the ideology of Indonesia”, referring to material concerning East Timor and “Papua needing to be independent”, as well as mocking the country’s founding principles, known as Pancasila. Both governments moved quickly to try to cool tensions and Indonesia’s chief security minister, Wiranto, later said only cooperation related to the military’s Australiabased language training programme had been suspended. JAKARTA — Indonesian and Filipino students on Saturday protested President Donald Trump’s immigration policy outside the U.S. embassies in their capitals.
In Jakarta, dozens of students and activists from several rights groups called on the Indonesian government and the international community to help stop Trump’s order that temporarily banned travelers from seven predominantly Muslim countries. They do not include Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim nation, and the Philippines, a key U.S. ally. However, Indonesia is home to nearly 14,000 refugees seeking resettlement in third countries, and Trump’s ban will significantly impact their chances of going to the U.S., said rights activist Veronica Koman, who organized the protest. A U.S. judge on Friday imposed a nationwide hold on Trump’s ban on travelers and immigrants from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Libya and Yemen, siding with two states that had challenged the executive order that has launched legal battles across the country. “We are here to protest Trump’s xenophobic and Islamophobia policies,” Koman said. Protesters waved banners such as “I’m angry with Trump” and “No ban, no wall.” “Actually this is not only for Muslims but this is war against humanity because the immigrants or refugees around the world, not only from Muslim countries, don’t have to be treated like this,” said activist Filza Inanuma. “Everybody should have rights to go everywhere they want for their protection, for their life.” A similar rally was held outside the seaside U.S. Embassy in the Philippine capital, Manila, where protesters burned a portrait of Trump. Bolt sprinkles star-dust as athletics goes Hollywood
Taking the baton from Olympic gold medal-winning team MELBOURNE - The Nitro Series promised to make athletics a show and the sport’s ultimate showman Usain Bolt capped its first meeting in Melbourne on Saturday by propelling his team of international mate Asafa Powell, Jamaican Bolt powered down the second leg at Lakeside Stadium before Americans Jenna Prandini and “All-Stars” to a crowd-pleasing win in the 4x100 metres relay.

Bolt’s first run of the year and first in Australia brought the curtain down on opening night of the Series, which has pledged to “revolutionise” athletics with a team-based event that borrows heavily from the formula of sport and entertainment which has underpinned Twenty20 cricket’s considerable success. With athletics struggling to maintain a profile outside of the Olympics and rocked by major doping and corruption scandals in recent years, organisers hope the series can reinvigorate the sport by shaking up the traditional schedule of events - and sprinkling some star-dust from marquee man Bolt. Bolt, who completed a “treble treble” of 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay Olympic titles at the 2016 Rio Games, was paid a seven-figure appearance fee to commit to all three meetings in the inaugural series in Melbourne this month and given a stake in the company running the event. The beach is mainly a local fisherman’s landing coast, where you can catch a view of them hauling in their wooden outriggers while unloading their early morning catches. Nelayan Beach offers a bit of seclusion, and is a great spot for quiet sunsets. Two small river mouths border both ends of the beach. There are several luxury villas in the area offering cosy retreats just beyond the coconut groves, the likes of Tirtarum Villas and the Nelayan Villas.
There’s a lot of sand allowing you to freely roam or laze about while enjoying the open seascapes. However, the waves at Nelayan Beach don’t offer much for surfers, who would instead paddle out to neighbouring Batu Bolong with its long rights and lava-rock reefs. Parasols-forrent and vendors peddling cold Bintangs are also scarce here compared to the adjacent beaches. Expect a bit of debris during the monsoonal months, between December and February. To get here, just follow down the namesake Jalan Nelayan road that branches off from Jalan Batu Bolong. (IBP/net)

Echo Beach BADUNG - Echo Beach is one of Bali’s most recently christened surf spots. The nickname overshadows its local name ‘Pantai Batu Mejan’, after a significant Balinese Hindu sea temple on site. Echo Beach is at the end of Jalan Pantai Batu Mejan, the road originally named after the temple there, but which now has more signposts bearing its new nickname. Before a Balinese-style gateway that opens to a glimpse of the horizon are rows of shacks with surfboards for rent, ding repairs, and a motorcycle parking spot. Sunset dining spots line the paved alley left of the gate, starting with Sticky Fingers Osteria Italiana, then Sate Bali, Dian Café, and the Echo Beach House which is responsible for its moniker. While most open during the day, many come to life a little later with barbecues and unique boat-shaped buffets at sunset. At the far end of the cafes you will be able to see the outline of the centuries-old temple. The temple
and the cafes sit on a small cliff overlooking the surf, and the black-sand beach is accessible down a few steps to the right of the gate. A hundred metres along the coastline and set upon the low-lying rocks is Sand Bar, parasols and colourful beanbags await you for great chill-out sessions. While the coast is excellent for sunbathing, leisurely strolls, and surf and landscape photographers, the waves of Echo Beach are strictly for advanced riders. Surfers dominate the scene by day, before shifting to a more ambient dining scene by night. The beach is clean and well-kept, the result of the joint efforts among various surf schools and clubs along Canggu’s coast, which carry out routine beach cleanups along its kilometre-length. To sum up, Echo Beach serves as one of the island’s best surf spots, and a great place to chill with a laidback vibe, great views, and delicious seafood. (IBP/net)

Juergen Klopp, lauded for overseeing the most attractive side in English football before Christmas, said Liverpool’s New Year decline made “no sense” after their Premier League title challenge evaporated on Saturday. A 2-0 defeat at struggling Hull City was probably the worst display by Liverpool in a woeful series of performances that seemed unthinkable after they ended 2016 with a vibrant win over fellow contenders Manchester City. Since that New Year’s Eve victory, they have won just one of 10 matches and that was a fairly undistinguished affair against fourth-tier Plymouth Argyle in the FA cup. Their malaise, again in evidence as they ran out of attacking ideas against Hull -- losing to goals from the Tigers’ on-loan Senegalese strikers, debutant Alfred N’Diaye and Oumar Niasse -- has been put down to numerous factors. Weariness stemming from their energetic pressing game, the loss of Sadio Mane to the African Nations Cup, an overcrowded schedule, the belief that other sides have cottoned on to Klopp’s methods... all these have been put forward as reasons for Liverpool’s slump. Yet even Klopp himself sounded as if he could not fathom the reasons as he told the BBC after the game: “We gave both goals away
easily, the overall performance was not like it should be. “It makes no sense for us to play like this. If we played like we did in the second half for the whole game, no team can cope with us. But we need to wake up; that was not acceptable. “I have a lot of thoughts at the moment and I can’t even say a few of them right now because I really need to think about what happened.” Once again, his side dominated the ball but did not come close to making their 72 percent worth of possession count, even after they improved on their insipid first-half showing. “We had a lot of possession, but what is possession?” mused Klopp. “Possession is only good if you create something. It was not like we expected from ourselves. We have to take the criticism, think about it, find a few answers and react. “We have quality still but we have to show it, it’s not to talk about it or to find excuses. Bolt sprinkles star-dust as athletics goes Hollywood
Taking the baton from Olympic gold medal-winning team MELBOURNE - The Nitro Series promised to make athletics a show and the sport’s ultimate showman Usain Bolt capped its first meeting in Melbourne on Saturday by propelling his team of international mate Asafa Powell, Jamaican Bolt powered down the second leg at Lakeside Stadium before Americans Jenna Prandini and “All-Stars” to a crowd-pleasing win in the 4x100 metres relay.
Jeneba Tarmoh completed the win in the mixed team event ahead of Japan and Australia. Bolt’s first run of the year and first in Australia brought the curtain down on opening night of the Series, which has pledged to “revolutionise” athletics with a team-based event that borrows heavily from the formula of sport and entertainment which has underpinned Twenty20 cricket’s considerable success. With athletics struggling to maintain a profile outside of the Olympics and rocked by major doping and corruption scandals in recent years, organisers hope the series can reinvigorate the sport by shaking up the traditional schedule of events - and sprinkling some star-dust from marquee man Bolt. Bolt, who completed a “treble treble” of 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay Olympic titles at the 2016 Rio Games, was paid a seven-figure appearance fee to commit to all three meetings in the inaugural series in Melbourne this month and given a stake in the company running the event. He fulfilled his role as athletics’ great entertainer, galloping on to the field before the meeting as flame cannons shot fireballs into the air and dancing to thumping pop music. “Tonight is the first night, we just want to do something different,” Bolt told reporters as a crowd of hundreds of spectators craned necks to capture a glimpse. “I’ve never handed (a baton) over to a girl. For me that was exciting. “Everybody was having fun, everyone was trying to support their team mates.” Bolt’s appearance helped secure a clutch of big names for the event, with American former Olympic 400m hurdles champion Kerron Clement running in his All-Stars team who won the overall event ahead of Australia. Nelayan Beach
BADUNG - Nelayan Beach in Bali is a 350m-long stretch of black sand between Canggu’s two other popular beaches, namely Batu Bolong and Berawa. The beach is mainly a local fisherman’s landing coast, where you can catch a view of them hauling in their wooden outriggers while unloading their early morning catches. Nelayan Beach offers a bit of seclusion, and is a great spot for quiet sunsets. Two small river mouths border both ends of the beach. There are several luxury villas in the area offering cosy retreats just beyond the coconut groves, the likes of Tirtarum Villas and the Nelayan Villas.
There’s a lot of sand allowing you to freely roam or laze about while enjoying the open seascapes. However, the waves at Nelayan Beach don’t offer much for surfers, who would instead paddle out to neighbouring Batu Bolong with its long rights and lava-rock reefs. Parasols-forrent and vendors peddling cold Bintangs are also scarce here compared to the adjacent beaches. Expect a bit of debris during the monsoonal months, between December and February. Echo Beach is at the end of Jalan Pantai Batu Mejan, the road originally named after the temple there, but which now has more signposts bearing its new nickname. Before a Balinese-style gateway that opens to a glimpse of the horizon are rows of shacks with surfboards for rent, ding repairs, and a motorcycle parking spot. Sunset dining spots line the paved alley left of the gate, starting with Sticky Fingers Osteria Italiana, then Sate Bali, Dian Café, and the Echo Beach House which is responsible for its moniker. While most open during the day, many come to life a little later with barbecues and unique boat-shaped buffets at sunset. At the far end of the cafes you will be able to see the outline of the centuries-old temple. The temple
and the cafes sit on a small cliff overlooking the surf, and the black-sand beach is accessible down a few steps to the right of the gate. A hundred metres along the coastline and set upon the low-lying rocks is Sand Bar, parasols and colourful beanbags await you for great chill-out sessions. While the coast is excellent for sunbathing, leisurely strolls, and surf and landscape photographers, the waves of Echo Beach are strictly for advanced riders. Surfers dominate the scene by day, before shifting to a more ambient dining scene by night. The beach is clean and well-kept, the result of the joint efforts among various surf schools and clubs along Canggu’s coast, which carry out routine beach cleanups along its kilometre-length. To sum up, Echo Beach serves as one of the island’s best surf spots, and a great place to chill with a laidback vibe, great views, and delicious seafood. (IBP/net)

Facing new challenger, Merkel rallies troublesome Bavarian ally
BERLIN - Chancellor Angela Merkel meets her Bavarian allies on Sunday for two days of talks aimed at rallying their troubled conservative alliance to take on the re-energised Social Democrats in a September election she expects to be “tough like no other”.
Horst Seehofer, leader of the Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU), sister party to Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has been a thorn in her side for much of the last two years, pressing for a cap on migrants that she is unwilling to support. But a spectacular revival in the Social Democrats’ fortunes, after they nominated former European Parliament president Martin Schulz as party leader last week, is forcing the conservative “Union” allies to bind together if they are to hold on to power. “Seehofer has to end his onslaught against Merkel if the Union wants to have any chance at all,” said Forsa pollster Manfred Guellner. A survey by another pollster, Infratest dimap, on Thursday showed support for the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) jumped by 8 points to 28 percent, the highest since the last federal election in
2013, following Schulz’s nomination. The CDU/CSU alliance remained ahead on 34 percent, but worryingly for Merkel the poll showed Schulz beating her comfortably in a theoretical headto-head contest. Seehofer’s prime concern has been holding onto the CSU’s absolute majority in Bavaria in a regional election in 2018, when he is worried about losing votes to the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD). However, the revival of the SPD is focusing attention in the CSU, which needs a strong CDU to retain the national clout that gives it sway in Bavaria. Likewise, Merkel needs the CSU to perform well in the federal election if she is to retain power. The fact that Merkel is carving two days out of her schedule to spend on the meeting in Munich underlines the importance she places on improving relations between the allies. Seehofer, who has been relentless in his criticism of her decision in 2015 to open Germany’s doors to a wave of migrants from the Middle East, must now convince Bavarians she is the right candidate for chancellor in the Sept. 24 election. Father of Louvre attacker says son is not a terrorist
CAIRO - The father of the machete-wielding man who was shot by a guard as he tried to enter Paris’s Louvre museum said on Saturday his son was not an Islamist and the French were only accusing him of terrorism to excuse the brutality used to stop him. Abdullah Reda al-Hamamy, an Egyptian, was shot several times after attacking soldiers outside the museum crying “Allahu Akbar” on Friday, in what President Francois Hollande called a terrorist attack. Al-Hamamy was initially feared to be close to death but doctors at the hospital where he is being treated no longer consider his life in danger, the Paris prosecutor’s office said on Saturday. Paint spray cans - but no explosives - were found in his back pack. Back in Egypt, Hamamy’s father, Reda Al Refaai, said he had
learned of his son’s case from Facebook and was still not aware of his fate. “Is he alive? Is he dead? JAKARTA - Australian army chief Angus Campbell will meet Indonesian military leaders in Jakarta on Wednesday, after defence cooperation was suspended last month over “insulting” teaching material found at an Australian base. Campbell is due to meet Indonesian military (TNI) chief, Gatot Nurmantyo and army chief of staff Mulyono, TNI spokesman Wuryanto said. Indonesia’s military chief declared the rupture in military ties after an Indonesian officer found “offensive” teaching material while on a language training course in Australia late last year. Nurmantyo said that the material “discredited the TNI, the nation of Indonesia and even the ideology of Indonesia”, referring to material concerning East Timor and “Papua needing to be independent”, as well as mocking the country’s founding principles, known as Pancasila. Both governments moved quickly to try to cool tensions and Indonesia’s chief security minister, Wiranto, later said only cooperation related to the military’s Australiabased language training programme had been suspended. JAKARTA — Indonesian and Filipino students on Saturday protested President Donald Trump’s immigration policy outside the U.S. embassies in their capitals.
In Jakarta, dozens of students and activists from several rights groups called on the Indonesian government and the international community to help stop Trump’s order that temporarily banned travelers from seven predominantly Muslim countries. They do not include Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim nation, and the Philippines, a key U.S. ally. However, Indonesia is home to nearly 14,000 refugees seeking resettlement in third countries, and Trump’s ban will significantly impact their chances of going to the U.S., said rights activist Veronica Koman, who organized the protest. A U.S. judge on Friday imposed a nationwide hold on Trump’s ban on travelers and immigrants from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Libya and Yemen, siding with two states that had challenged the executive order that has launched legal battles across the country. “We are here to protest Trump’s xenophobic and Islamophobia policies,” Koman said. China raises shortterm interest rates in fresh tightening sign
SHANGHAI - China’s central bank surprised financial markets on Friday by raising short-term interest rates on the first day back from a long holiday, in a further sign of policy tightening as the economy shows signs of steadying. While the rate increases were modest, they reinforced views that Chinese authorities are intent on both containing capital outflows and reining in risks to the financial system created by years of debtfueled stimulus. Higher interest rates could prod debt-laden firms into deleveraging, though at the risk of stunting growth. “It appears to be an intent to control a real estate bubble. It could also be aimed at arresting the yuan’s depreciation, although it is on the reverse repo they touched upon and the impact remains to be seen,” said Naoto Saito, chief economic researcher at the Daiwa Institute of Research In Tokyo. “All in all, it comes across as a move to tweak interest rate levels to accompany a broader monetary policy shift.” The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) raised the interest rate on open market operation reverse repurchase agreements (repos) by 10 basis points, effective on Feb. 3. The comments were made in an essay published by China Finance, a PBOC-affiliated magazine, through the messaging service WeChat. Analysts said the tightening of primarily money market rates suggested the PBOC wanted to retain policy flexibility as it balances the need to keep the economy from slowing again. Other moves in recent months had signalled that Beijing was eyeing a gradual shift from its loose policy stance. In late January, the PBOC raised rates on its medium-term loan facility (MLF) for the first time since it debuted the liquidity tool in 2014. It was the first time it has raised one of its policy interest rates since July 2011. Analysts expect any further steps to be gradual as policymakers weigh their impact on economic growth, and believe the PBOC will be in no hurry to raise the policy lending rate for now. World business grows as it faces upcoming risks
LONDON - Global businesses started 2017 on a solid footing, surveys showed on Friday, thriving ahead of a myriad of political risks in the coming year. Fears of a growing protectionist agenda in the United States, whether national elections across Europe upset the status quo and just how fractious Britain’s divorce proceedings from the European Union become, are all expected to weigh in the months ahead. Yet so far those risks seem to have been mostly ignored with firms from Asia to Europe to the United States increasing or at least largely maintaining activity. Euro zone businesses started 2017 by increasing activity at the same multi-year record pace they set in December while the U.S. non-farm payroll report showed job growth surging more than expected in January as construction firms and retailers ramped up hiring. “Overall while this report is further evidence that the (U.S.) labour market is buoyant the continued slow pace of wage growth means that the (Federal Reserve) will feel under no great pressure to step up
the pace of monetary tightening,” economists at Lloyds Bank told clients in a note. China’s factory activity grew for a seventh month and while India’s services business contracted for a third month as firms struggled to recover from a government crackdown on currency in circulation, the pace slowed. “The outlook for this year is reasonably bright despite all the risks. The numbers for January have generally been quite positive,” said Andrew Kenningham, chief global economist at Capital Economics. Growth in Britain’s services sector slowed for the first time in four months in January, dipping just below its long-run average, as businesses battled the sharpest rise in costs in more than five years. But on Thursday the Bank of England sharply revised up its growth forecast for 2017 to 2.0 percent, a view held by only the most optimistic forecaster in a Reuters poll of 50 economists taken last month. Britain’s economy unexpectedly outpaced all its major peers last year, wrongfooting those who expected an immediate hit from June’s Brexit vote.
The Markit/CIPS British services Purchasing Managers’ Index dropped to a three-month low of 54.5 last month from December’s 15-month high, at the bottom end of a range of forecasts in a Reuters poll of economists, but Markit said the PMIs still point to first quarter growth of 0.5 percent. “Despite the slightly disappointing outcome this remains a very strong report,” said James Knightley, senior economist at ING. IHS Markit’s final composite PMI for the euro zone, seen as a good guide to growth, held at 54.4. It has not been higher since May 2011 and has remained above the 50 mark dividing growth from contraction since mid-2013. That points to first quarter expansion of 0.4 percent, Markit said, matching the median prediction in a Reuters poll. A similar survey from the U.S. showed non-manufacturing growth dipped marginally last month. If they insist on taking polygamy, they must be willing to be ostracized in a vacant land located in the south of local village, known as karang memadu or polygamy area. The polygamy area is vacant land measuring approximately 9×21 meters. It is located in the southern of people’s residence. Local residents consider it spiritually impure (leteh). As being impure, any fruits cultivated in the area like bananas cannot to be taken advantage as a means of ritual oblation, but should only be consumed. A signboard reading ‘Polygamy Area’ is installed to mark this land and indeed made special by residents. Any residents daring to violate the rules set forth in the customary bylaw or awig-awig of Penglipuran, they must consequently be willing to be ostracized and occupy the area with their wife. Not only that, they will also be subject to some other social sanctions. They are not allowed to cross the number of certain roads in the village area. GIANYAR - There are a total of 13 areas throughout Ubud that are categorized as developed. Ubud is visited by thousands of travelers every day who come to enjoy the arts and the culture of homestays. Behind Ubud’s great appeal the government is doing little to repair damaged infrasturcture in the region. Road damage is the most obvious infrasturcture issue in Ubud. Almost all the sidewalks in the area are damaged from having never been repaired over the years. There are even giant holes in some sidewalks. Such conditions are truly unfortunate given how many travellwers come here to walk the streets and enjoy the beauty of the area. Head of the Gianyar Tourism Office, A.A. Bagus Ari Brahmanta, when contacted on this matter admitted that Ubid’s infrastructure needs the attention fo the government. The Tourism Ofice he said has been coordinating with the public works department to prorotize infrastucture repair in Ubud. “We have reported this matter to the governemnt, and the district road sections will soon be repaired”, he said. He added that 13 villages in Ubud out of Gianyar’s 25 villages are categorized as developed. “These are developed tourism villages so we need to improve their quality, such as repairing roads and damaged sidewalks. Obviously, we have coordinated with the district and provincial Public Works Agency”, he said. Outside of Ubud, there are seven villages which are developing tourism villages, and five vother villages are included in the development plan. “From a total of 25 tourism villages, five villages are new additions planned to be included as tourism village, but their potential will be reviewed again. They are: Negari hamlet (Singapadu Tengah, Sukawati, Singapadu Kaler, Kedisan hamlet and Kendran Manuaba hamlet, Tegallalang) and Marga hamlet, Payangan”, he explained. Head of the Gianyar Tourism Office affirmed that the government of Gianyar has given special attention to the regions tat have been developed into tourism villages. In the development of tourism villages, communities are directly involved as players, not just as spectators. “So, in addition to really touching people, the effort to provide guidance for tourism villages can also be used as a form of cultural preservation, especially Gianyar that that is famous for art and culture,” he said. BANGLI - Residents of Madya hamlet, Terunyan, Kintamani, are still facing a clean water shortages. Local people are relying on rainwater to meet their daily needs. During the rainy seaon, residents collect rainwater in cisterns. Resident of Madya hamlet, Wayan Santep, said that most of his fellow residents collect rainwater using permanent cisterns, while several other residents use tarpaulins. The water collected during the rainy season only lasts for a few months. Usually by May, residents living behind the hills are forced to turn to water from Lake Batur to meet their dailly needs. “During the dry season, we walk to the lake to fetch water for the necessities of life like bathing and giving to our livestock as drinking
water. We too consume the lake water”, he said on Friday (Feb. 3). He explained that he and his neighbours usually set off for the lake to collect water early in the morning as it takes two hours to get there and back and Madya hamlets residents need to hike up and down Terunyan Hill. Purchasing water is simply not possible for them because the road to Madya is severly damaged so trucks cannot get to their hamlet. The road that was created through the TMMD program in 2014 is so badly damaged that cars cannot use it. The resolution urged Tehran to refrain from work on ballistic missiles designed to deliver nuclear weapons. Critics say the resolution’s language does not make this obligatory. MANILA - The Philippine government derided Catholic bishops on Sunday as “out of touch” after they used weekend sermons to attack a war on drugs they said had created a “reign of terror” for the poor. Members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) had dramatised President Rodrigo Duterte’s campaign and, instead of criticising, should focus on contributing to the “reign of peace” that innocent people now felt, presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella said. The church assailed bloodshed that had caused suffering, and said killing people was not the way to deal with illegal drugs. In a pastoral letter read out on Saturday and repeated to congregations at churches on Sunday, bishops said it was disturbing that many Filipinos were indifferent to the killings, or even approved of them. Abella, a former pastor, said the war on drugs had made the country safer, “far from the ‘terror’ the bishops paint rather dramatically.” “The officials of the CBCP are apparently out of touch with the sentiments of the faithful who overwhelmingly support the changes in the Philippines,” Abella said in a statement. More than 7,600 people have been killed since Duterte unleashed a ferocious crackdown seven months ago, more than 2,500 in police raids and sting operations. Human rights groups believe many other deaths that police had attributed to vigilantes were carried out by assassins likely colluding with police. The government and police vehemently deny extrajudicial killings have occurred. The CBCP’s message was read at numerous churches in Manila attended by Reuters, though not all. Church sources said the Archdiocese of Manila issued a circular telling parishes to read the pastoral letter, a copy of which was obtained by Reuters prior to the first readings. DENPASAR - Information circulating on social media sites about the United States Embassy having declared that there is the potential for a terrorist attack in Bali that would target nightclubs and shopping centers appears to be unfounded. When contacted for a confirmation of this hearsay, Spokesman for the Bali Police, Hengky Widjaja, stated that there has been no official information reagrding such a warning. “If there has in fact been such a warning, there must instructions and attention from the national police headquarters. So far, there has been no such information”, said Hengky on Friday (Feb. 3). Nevertheless, continued Hengky, Balinese people are urged to remain vigilant. However people should not panic in the face of uncertain information. “If we panic and this is seen by travelers, this will disrupt us whereas such a threat is not necessarily true”, he said. People’s vigilance must be encouraged and increased. If there
is something suspicious, Hengky asked that it be reported immediately. Maintaining security in Bali must be the priority of the people. Moreover, Balinese people on the Island of the Gods are united to protect Bali from external threats. Clashes amongst fellow Balinese must also be avoided, he said. “Even though people outside Bali make a scene, Balinese people should join in. As a tourist destination, Bali should remain safe and conducive to peace”, he said. Bali police continue to improve preemptive and preventive measures and to assign intelligence officers. Since there has been no instruction related to any warning, police authorities are not on special standby. Although the information is vague, his institution is not ignoring it and is still taking action. “Probably the locations mentioned are just a decoy. The target may be different. DENPASAR - Denpasar and Singaraja experienced relatively high inflation rate during the period of January 2017. Such high inflation rate is triggered by many factors, such as the price hike of cayenne pepper, vehicle registration renewal fee and wage of domestic workers. This was revealed in the official release submitted by the Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Bali, Adi Nugroho, on Wednesday (Feb. 1). “Inflation rate in Denpasar during the period of January 2017 reached 1.39 percent and Singaraja records the inflation rate of 1.79 percent,” he said. Inflation in these two major cities, said Adi, gets the attention of BPS Bali because it is higher than the national inflation rate reaching 0.394 percent. Of the ten major commodities contributing to inflation in Denpasar, the increase in vehicle registration renewal fee of 105.76 percent has contributed the most. It is followed by price hike of cayenne pepper reaching 72.32 percent and domestic worker wage increase of 2.27 percent. “Other commodities contributing to inflation are credit of mobile phone, electricity tariff, price of cars, non-subsidized fuel, cigarette filters and anchovy,”
he added. Adi continued that commodities contributing to inflation rate in Singaraja included the price hike of cayenne pepper, electricity tariff, vehicle registration renewal fee, chicken, non-subsidized fuel, beans, credit of mobile phone, tuna, egg and spinach. In addition, he also presented the development of cumulative value of export commodities from Bali which increased from USD 498,681,698 during the period from January to December 2015 to USD 505,119,761 during the period from January to December 2016. In other words, the export value of Bali increased as much as 1.29 percent. The countries becoming the major export markets of Bali are the United States, Australia, Japan, Singapore and China. “The US still occupies the highest percentage namely 25.52 percent followed by Australia at 9.19 percent,” he said while hoping that America’s policy under the leadership of Donald Trump will remain in favor of the export growth from Bali Province. Adi Nugroho added that the presence of micro and small industry in Bali Province also experienced positive growth in 2016, reaching 11.56 percent. Defendant Benjamin Bailer was convicted on Thursday (Feb. 2) and sentenced to five years and eight months in jail by a panel of judges led by Ekstar Oktavi.
The Denpasar District Court, also fined the defendant IDR 1 billion, with a subsidiary of three months in prison. The sentence was less than the seven years, and finr of IDR 1 billion and 8 month subsiduary time that public prosecutor Paul had requested. The judge charged the
defendant under Article 112 paragraph 1 of the Law on Narcotics. After hearing the verdict, the prosecutor and legal counsel of the defendant, Bernardin et al, and the defendant immediately accepted the judge’s verdict and signed the acceptance form. To note, German citizen Benja-
min Bailer was found in posession of both crystal meth-making equipment as well as 0.71 grams of crystal meth found on the side tabel of the defendants room onteh second floor. The defendant claimed that he wanted the crystoal meth for his own personal use and learned hwo to make more form the internet. In

Circulation of gorilla tobacco getting massive Two dealers arrested
MANGUPURA - The circulation of ‘gorilla tobacco’ and ‘herbal smoke tea’ is increasingly prevalent in Bali. The Narcotic Investigation Unit of Badung police are not standing idly by but have arrested seom dealers. On Monday (Jan. 23), police arrested two dealers; a 33 year old with the P.A.S. on Jalan Imam Bonjol Gang Nyuh Sudamala, Denpasar and a 38 year old with the initials I. on Jalan Gunung Andakasa, Gang Soka, Denpasar. Chief of the Badung Police, Ruddi Setiawan, accompanied by chief of the Narcotics Investigation Unit, Djoko Hariadi said on Thursday (Feb. 2) that after testing the gorilla tobacco in the forensics laboratory, it was declared negative of narcotics and suspected of being a conterfeit item. Meanwhile the herbal smoke tea tobacco tested positive as a class one narcotic. The suspect PAS had been living on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, in Mumbul, South Kuta. The evidence secured by police consisted of six plastic boxes of herbal smoke tea weighing 150.6 grams. “This tobacco contains preparations of ABFubinaca listed as a class one narcotic and as such vioates the Ministery of Health’s laws. Here is now the emmergence fo the circulation of gorilla tobacco”, he added.
Disclosure of this case, said the police chief, originated from reports from the public that someone had been circulating tobacco that had the ability to ‘get people high’ like marijuana does. Based on this information, Djoko and his team conducted an investigation and shadowed suspects. On Monday at 13:00, police arrested one suspect in his dorm room on Jalan Imam Bonjol, West Denpasar. During the search, the officers secured evidence consisting of six plastic boxes of herbal smoke tea with a total weight of 150.6 grams. The goods were found in a backpack belonging to the suspect. “The suspect admitted that the tobacco was to be sold and that the goods had been purchased online. One box weighs 5 grams and is sold for IDR 250,000”, said said Djoko. Suspect I.D, was then arrested on Jalan Gunung Andakasa Gang Soka at 19:30. Police seized total of 10 plastic boxes of herbal smoke tea weighing 150.6 grams in total. Police arrested the suspect when he was in his rented house where police found evidence in the suspect’s backpack. . I.D. admitted to be distributing the marijuana-like tobacco. “The suspect purchased the tobacco online and in the same way that meth dealers do, he planned to have the goods delivered to one place and payment transferred digitally”, he said. Turkish police detain over 440 people in anti-IS operation ISTANBUL — Turkey’s anti-terrorism police have detained over 440 people for alleged links to the Islamic State group, the state-run agency reported Sunday. The Anadolu Agency said 60 IS suspects, the vast majority of them foreigners, were taken into custody early Sunday in the capital, Ankara. It said a total of 445 people were detained in simultaneous pre-dawn police operations that spanned several cities, including Istanbul and Gaziantep, near the border with Syria. The largest operation was in the southeast province of Sanliurfa, where police took into custody more than 100 suspects from multiple addresses and found materials relating to Islamic State militants. Security forces also apprehended nine suspects who were allegedly preparing an attack in the northwestern city of Izmir.
Anadolu did not give the nationalities of all those detained but there were 10 minors among the foreigners detained in Istanbul and the northwestern province of Kocaeli. Turkey, which last year endured a failed coup attempt and dozens of bloody attacks linked to IS or Kurdish militants, has been stepping up its anti-terrorism efforts. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for a New Year Eve mass shooting at an Istanbul nightclub that killed 39 people. It claims to have multiple cells in Turkey.
Turkey is a member of the NATO alliance and the U.S-led coalition against IS. It shares borders with Syria and Iraq, two war-torn nations at the heart of the fight against IS militants. Turkish forces have been deployed in Syria since August with the aim of clearing a border patch of IS militants and Syrian Kurdish fighters that Ankara considers related to its own Kurdish insurgency.
