Repeated complaints over the road damage on the Singapadu– Ubud route belonging to the authority of provincial government eventually makes people react. Local residents were forced to plant banana tree on Friday (Feb 3) on the road body which was badly damaged. Those banana tree were planted by resident right at Sengguan hamlet, Singapadu, Sukawati subdistrict, Gianyar. Such an action posed a form of protest because government did not repair the damaged road. Based on observation at location, the banana tree was planted in the morning. The protest in the form of planting banana tree had drawn the attention of the passersby. They were planted right on the most serious potholes. No road users touched the banana tree where near the hump was placed a used car tire. Based on information from local residents and road users, they agreed with the planting of banana tree as a form of protest against the severe damage of the road. Banana tree planting by residents made the Gianyar Public Works Agency could not do much. According to the head of the agency, Nyoman Nuadi, his party got a report about the road planted with banana tree. In relation to the damage, the Gianyar Public Works Agency had

CAIRO - An Egyptian government building was set on fire on Sunday as protests disrupted the heart of Cairo for a fourth day and public figures demanded a faster transition to civilian rule. Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

JAKARTA - Indonesia detained Saturday 96 asylum seekers who had attempted to reach Australia, half of whom were rounded up after their boat capsized in western Java waters, police said. Police chief Irman Sugema said a wooden boat with 47 Afghans and Iranians leaked and capsized in the rough seas of Tasikmalaya in West Java province. “All of them, 47 migrants and two boat crew, have been rescued alive in the afternoon and they are now being held at Tasikmalaya police office,” Sugema told AFP. Earlier on Saturday at 02:00 am (1900 GMT) he said police also arrested 49 Afghans and Iranians who were traveling by bus to the port in Tasikmalaya.
He said police would work with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the immigration office to settle the problem. In December an overloaded vessel carrying about 250 mostly Iranian and Afghan asylum seekers sank off Indonesia’s eastern Java, killing all but 47 people on board. Indonesia is a key staging post for peoplesmugglers taking Afghans, Iranians and other nationals on the sometimes deadly sea voyage to Australia.

SURABAYA — Indonesian police say they have arrested an airline pilot on suspicion of using illegal drugs three hours before flying. Narcotics agency director Brig. Gen. Benny Mamoto says Lion Air pilot Syaiful Salam was arrested early Saturday in his hotel room in Surabaya city with a small amount of crystal methamphetamine in his possession.
He says a urine test showed Salam had also consumed the drug. The pilot was scheduled to fly three hours later. Salam is the fifth Lion Air pilot to be arrested for alleged drug use in two months. Airline officials could not immediately be reached for comment. In November, Lion Air announced the biggest order ever from Boeing — 230 planes with a list price of $21.7 billion.

The only enemies of the wild bull were tigers and forest dogs. It is becoming the responsibility of local government to preserve and develop Balinese language in order it could survive in the midst of the growth of other languages like Bahasa Indonesia and foreign languages. To preserve Balinese culture should also simultaneously maintain and use of Balinese language in daily life. In other words, speaking Balinese language also characterizes one of the identities as a Balinese. Among the use of other languages, Balinese language should remain to give a space to grow and develop. Other than speaking and teaching it at schools, it should also accommodate the need of modern community or use in wider functions of language. Balinese community receives abundant heritages of lontar or palm-leaf manuscripts from the predecessors retained by individuals and museums. They carry many aspects of knowledge, ranging from philosophy, local healing, literature, architecture, agriculture, herbal practice, astrology and so forth. Therefore, if they could be interpreted and presented in popular language, they could become attractive information for young generation and saleable books for commercial needs. Today, there is also a trend of poising the tradition with modern science namely by re-interpreting the indigenous wisdoms that are
relevant to the current time. People will get balanced inputs from the past and current orientation. Balinese Culture Tambusan Be Pasih (Diced Fish Roasted in Banana Leaf) OVERVIEW: The spicy ďŹ sh dish is excellent for barbeques. INGREDIENTS: 600 gr (1Âź 1lb) boned mackerel ďŹ llets, skin removed and cut in 2.5 cm (1in) cubes ½ cup basic marinade 1 heaped tbsp tamarind pulp, soaked in Âź cup warm water and juice extracted 1 tsp black peppercorns, crushed 1 ½ tsp salt 3 lemon leaves, cut in hair like shreds 3 tbsp oil 2 salam leaves 2 square of banana leaf 30x30cm (10x10 in) PREPARATION: In deep bowl combine mackerel cubes, spice paste, tamarind juice, crushed black pepper, salt, lime leaf and oil, and mix very well in order to coat ďŹ sh evenly. Cover and marinate in cool place for 2 hours. Place one salam leaf in center of each piece of banana leaf. Top with half of seafood mix and fold the same way as for Tum Bebek. Place parcels directly onto moderately hot charcoal and roast very slowly for one hour. Alternatively, bake on rack in a moderate oven or under a grill for about 30 minutes. Trunyan IBP
The village of Trunyan is squeezed tightly between the lake and the outer crater rim of Batur, an almighty volcano in Kintamani. This is a Bali Aga village, inhabited by descendants of the original Balinese, the people who predate the arrival of the Hindu Majapahit kingdom in the 16th century. It is famous for the Pura Pancering Jagat temple, but unfortunately visitors are not allowed inside. There are also a couple of traditional Bali Aga-style dwellings, and a large banyan tree, which is said to be more than 1,100 years old. At Kuban sub-village close to Trunyan is a mysterious cemetery that is separated by the lake and accessible only by boat - there is no path along the steep walls of the crater rim. The village of Trunyan itself is situated at the edge of Batur Lake. This location is inaccessible except by boat, and it takes around half an hour across the calm waters. Getting to Lake Batur takes around two hours drive to the northeast of Denpasar along the main road to Buleleng and through Bangli Regency. Unlike the Balinese people, the people of Trunyan do not cremate or bury their dead, but
just lay them out in bamboo cages to decompose, although strangely there is no stench. A macabre collection of skulls and bones lies on the stone platform and the surrounding areas. The dead bodies don’t produce bad smells because of the perfumed scents from a huge Taru Menyan tree growing nearby. Taru means ‘tree’ and Menyan means ‘nice smell’. The name of Terunyan was also derived from these two words. The women from Trunyan are prohibited from going to the cemetery when a dead body is carried there. This follows the deeply rooted belief that if a woman comes to the cemetery while a corpse is being carried there, there will be a disaster in the village, for example a landslide or a volcanic eruption. Such events have been frequent in the village’s history, but whether women had anything to do with it is a matter of opinion... You can visit both the village of Trunyan and the Kuban cemetery by chartered boat from Kedisan. Sadly, nowadays the boat trips are now blatant tourist traps, as touts and guides strongly urge you to donate your cash to the temple project or leave a donation for the dead. These touts ruin an otherwise fascinating experience.

INDIANAPOLIS - Pop superstar Madonna said it was a dream come true to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show on Sunday and conceded she was feeling pressure at the idea of singing in front of the huge live television audience. NEW YORK — Fans of “Soul Train” boogied down Broadway wearing afro wigs and bell bottoms on Saturday while others recounted their favorite episodes at a Harlem meeting hall in tribute to the TV show’s late creator, Don Cornelius. About 100 dancers descended on Times Square in a “flash mob” organized through the Internet. As startled tourists looked on, they recreated one of the show’s “Soul Train lines” in which people would take turns dancing toward a TV camera while showing off their most outrageous moves. “Don Cornelius was a big influence in my life, and I just wanted to pay tribute,” said disc jockey Jon Quick, as he held up a speaker blasting disco grooves. “He was playing
the music that nobody else wanted to play. He was an amazing man.” Cornelius, 75, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Wednesday. He had suffered from health problems, a difficult divorce, and had pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor spousal battery charge in 2009. But on Saturday fans praised Cornelius’ vision in creating, hosting and selling “Soul Train” to television stations that were originally skeptical about programming aimed at blacks.
The show aired from 1971 to 2006. “Don Cornelius brought soul to the whole world,” said Ramona Hamm, 37, who came to Times Square with her 9-year-old daughter, Kayla Charles. The dancers bounced down Broadway for about 45 minutes until police told the party to disperse. In Harlem, the Rev. Al Sharpton, a civil rights activist, led a tribute to Cornelius as part of the weekly community meeting at the headquarters of his National Action Network. In 1974, a 19-year-old Sharpton appeared on “Soul Train” to present an award to his mentor James Brown, the legendary soul singer. Singer Roberta Flack said Cornelius was an inspiration to other black performers and entrepreneurs.

NEW YORK — Ben Gazzara, whose powerful dramatic performances brought an intensity to a variety of roles and made him a memorable presence in such iconic productions over the decades as the original “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” on Broadway and the film “The Big Lebowski,” has died at age 81. Longtime family friend Suzanne Mados said Gazzara died Friday in Manhattan. Mados, who owned the Wyndham Hotel, where celebrities such as Peter Falk and
Martin Sheen stayed, said he died after being placed in hospice care for cancer. She and her husband helped marry Gazzara and his wife, German-born Elke Krivat, at their hotel. Gazzara was a proponent of method acting, in which the performer attempts to take on the thoughts and emotions of the character he’s playing, and it helped him achieve stardom early in his career with two stirring Broadway performances. In 1955, he originated the role of Brick Pollitt, the disturbed alcoholic son and failed football star
in “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.” He left the show after only seven months to take on an equally challenging role, Johnny Pope, the drug addict in “A Hatful of Rain.” It earned him his first of three Tony Award nominations. In 1965, he moved on to TV stardom in “Run for Your Life,” a drama about a workaholic lawyer who, diagnosed with a terminal illness, quits his job and embarks on a globe-trotting attempt to squeeze a lifetime of adventures into the one or two years he has left. He was twice nominated for Emmys during the show’s three-year run.

Study: Is Facebook more addictive than alcohol or cigarettes? According to a new study out of the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, the desire to check a social network like Twitter or Facebook is stronger than the need to smoke a cigarette or have an alcoholic beverage. As reported by The Guardian, test subjects between the ages of 18 to 85 were armed with BlackBerry smartphones and asked to send messages seven times a day related to recent desires. Splitting the messages up over 14 hours a day covering an entire week, respondents were asked to list any desire felt in the last 30 minutes and describe the level of strength of that desire. The 205 participants were also asked to describe how it interfered with other desires and if
the desire was resisted. After collecting over 10,000 responses from the group, approximately three fourths were related to some type of desire. Sexual activity and sleep ranked at the top of the desire list, but checking social networks and attempting to avoid work were very close behind. However, respondents were able to resist the majority of sexual and spending impulses. In addition, addictive vices such as caffeine, tobacco and alcohol were much lower on the
overall list of desires. Researchers also discovered that the ability to resist certain desires is much stronger at the start of the day and participants were more likely to give into a desire if they continually attempted to resist it throughout the day. According to Wilhelm Hofmann, the University’s assistant professor of behavioral science, he stated “Resisting the desire to work was likewise prone to fail. In contrast, people were relatively successful at resisting sports inclinations, sexual urges, and spending impulses, which seems surprising given the salience in modern culture of disastrous failures to control sexual impulses and urges to spend money.”
SAN FRANCISCO — Stressed out by flying? Travelers in Northern California can now find their inner calm in the Yoga Room at San Francisco International Airport. The quiet, dimly lit studio officially opened last week in a former storage room just past the security checkpoint at SFO’s Terminal 2. Airport officials believe the 150-square-foot (14-square-meter) room with mirrored walls is the world’s first airport yoga studio, said spokesman Mike McCarron. The room, open to all ticketed passengers, contains a few chairs and yoga mats but no instructors or televisions. No shoes, food, drinks or cell phones are allowed. “Silence is appreciated,” says a sign spelling out “Yoga Room Etiquette.” A prominent blueand-white sign with a Buddhalike pictogram beckons visitors: “Come check out our Yoga Room.” Frequent flyer Maria Poole accepted the invitation, practicing a downward dog asana and other
yoga poses before boarding her flight. “It’s perfect,” said Poole, 47, of Lafayette. “I think it should be in every airport, especially the terminals that I fly through. This would be such a great way for me to get my exercise in, get a little peace and quiet — a little Zen moment.” The Yoga Room is just the latest example of how airports are trying to improve the passenger experience and showcase their regional culture, noting the ancient practice’s popularity in the San Francisco Bay area, said Debby McElroy, executive vice president of Airports Council InternationalNorth America. In recent years, airports have upgraded their food and shopping venues and added massage parlors, nail salons, dry cleaners and pet hotels, McElroy said, but SFO is the first to add a yoga room in North America and probably the world. “I expect other airports will be looking at whether a yoga room at their airport makes sense,” McElroy said.

Scientists have captured a “supergiant” crustacean in waters seven kilometres (4.5 miles) deep off New Zealand, measuring 10 times the normal size of related species. The “supergiant amphipod”, which resembles a monster prawn, was found during an expedition to the Kermadec Trench north of New Zealand by scientists from the University of Aberdeen and Wellington’s NIWA marine research institute. Amphipods are normally up to three centimetres (around an inch)
long and the University of Aberdeen’s Alan Jamieson said he was stunned to find the 28 centimetre (11 inch) giant when emptying traps on his research vessel’s deck. “I stopped and thought ‘what on earth is that?’ whilst catching a glimpse of an amphipod far bigger than I ever thought possible,” he said. “It’s a bit like finding a foot-long cockroach.” Another amphipod, which was filmed by the expedition but not captured, was an estimated 34 centimetres long. “It just goes to show that the more you look, the more you find,” NIWA principal
scientist Ashley Rowden said. “For such a large and conspicuous animal to go unnoticed for so long is just testament to how little we know about life in New Zealand’s most deep and unique habitat.” Supergiant amphipods have been found only once before, in the 1980s. But that was off Hawaii, about 7,000 kilometres (4,500 miles) to the north, and NIWA said it was yet to determine if the latest catch was a new species. Scientists said they did not know why the deep-sea creatures evolved to such a huge size.

Former world number one Serena Williams gave the United States a commanding 2-0 lead over Belarus in their Fed Cup tie on Saturday after top ranked Victoria Azarenka was unable to compete for the eastern Europeans because of a sore lower back. American Christina McHale defeated Belarus’ Anastasia Yakimova 6-0 6-4, then Williams beat Olga Govortsova 7-5 6-0 in the World Group II tie indoors at Worcester, Massachusetts.

Pedrosa: 1000cc MotoGP machines ‘most physically demanding’ DANI Pedrosa has described Honda’s new RCV 213V as “the most physically demanding” MotoGP bike he has ridden. The 26-year-old Spaniard made the assessment after winding up third quickest on the final day of testing at Sepang, leaving him behind his world champion team-mate Casey Stoner and Yamaha’s Jorge Loreno. Pedrosa has won races on both 990 and 800cc machinery in MotoGP since his debut in grand prix racing’s premier class in 2006, but the Spaniard believes that doing so on the new for 2012 1000cc bike will be even more difficult. “This bike is physically more de-
manding [than the 800], you feel the power in the acceleration, the speed under hard braking and also the extra weight, and three days of testing here in Malaysia is very tiring,” Pedrosa said. “This morning when I woke up I was pretty sore and stiff, but once I got running, it was a little better. I will keep working hard physically to prepare for the second test.” Like most other bikes, Pedrosa’s machine suffered from excessive chatter during the test, leading to analyses of electronic and suspension set-ups being undertaken at Sepang. Although the problem has not been cured on the Honda, Pedrosa said that he could feel significant progress had
been made during the three days. “It’s been worth it to do a general test of the engine, chassis and tyres and overall it is the biggest test we have done on this bike and we have good data to analyse and can start to build up points we need for the second test,” he added. “The biggest point to improve is on braking, and we are also working on the electronics to improve the management of the power and the grip level. The chatter is still there, I know it’s something very difficult to fix, but I’m sure Honda is working hard on it. In general, it’s been a positive test for us and we will come back here in three weeks with new ideas.”

Alonso glad Ferrari went for a radical 2012 Formula 1 car Fernando Alonso says he completely backs Ferrari’s decision to produce a radical 2012 Formula 1 design, and argued that the F2012 can still be considered beautiful. Ferrari’s 2012 contender - launched in Maranello on Friday - features a dramatic step in its nose, pull-rod front suspension, and major aerodynamic and packaging changes over its predecessor. Alonso said he had been excited by the unusual design from the outset and was pleased that Ferrari was doing something different. “With the new car the first feeling was very good from the beginning,” he said in a video interview released by Ferrari.
“I like the shape, the creative shape that we see in this new car. I think when a car surprises you from the first look, it’s always a positive thing and I quite like the car. Hopefully it’s fast.” Alonso also defended the F2012’s aesthetics. “I like the innovative ideas that the car has,” he said. “I think all Ferraris are beautiful cars. I don’t remember any Ferrari that is ugly or any Ferrari that you don’t like. The red colour and the passion of each car that Ferrari does make the car
beautiful anyway.” Alonso’s team-mate Felipe Massa said he was also pleased that Ferrari was exploring different design directions to its rivals. “It’s a very aggressive car. Different,” said Massa. “I’m very enthusiastic that we’re going to have a different car and a car where we go to a different direction in terms of development. “We still need to get used to this nose, which is very strange due to the new rules. But apart from the nose the car is very aggressive and very nice and I hope we’re going to see a very competitive car from the beginning to the end.”
