PALM SPRINGS - Hollywood stars Tom Hanks and Nicole Kidman were among the actors honoured at the Palm Springs International Film Festival on Monday night as the 2017 awards season began. Oscar winner Hanks received the “Icon Award” for his portrayal in drama “Sully” of pilot Captain Chesley Sullenberger, who in 2009 carried out a successful emergency plane landing in the Hudson River. Kidman took the “International Star Award” for “Lion”, in which she plays an Australian woman who adopts an Indian child.

Hectares of paddy fields prone to be pounded by tidal waves

Seven houses stated to be wrongly executed DENPASAR - House buildings located in the east of the road or on Jalan Tukad Bulan, Bugis kampong, Serangan, South Denpasar, have been razed to the ground. Only a pole house remains belonging to cultural heritage. After the execution, a total of 36 families of Bugis kampong affected by the execution do not know where to take shelter after their house has been dismantled by executor team of the Denpasar district court. But interestingly, the house of seven residents claimed to exclude from the 36 families was executed as well. The seven residents are Edi, Sulkivli, Mauludin, Husein, Sakaria, Siti Hajar and Muhayat. Their house is located behind the pole house. These residents will report the case to police. “There are seven houses outside the 36 families also executed. It is wrong and I have met the clerk of the court,” said Rizal Akbar Maya Poetra. Due to the wrong execution, he is going to report the case to police on Thursday. In the meantime, Spokesperson of Denpasar district court, I Made Sukereni, told that the court will not only hear unilaterally. However, it listens to both sides. Evidence has been at hand, so that chief of the Denpasar district court will not carry out the execu-
tion simply based on oral information but based on the existing data and evidences. Regarding the accusation of excessive execution, Sukereni said that the execution is carried out based on the verdict. If they do not accept the execution, they can sue. On the other hand, regarding the chaos during the execution last Wednesday, Rizal admitted that four residents of Bugis kampong were named suspects by police. They are Aditya Sulaiman, Amir Hadli, Harris Fadilah and Said Saddam. They armed with sharp weapon and one brought arrows. “For these suspects, we will immediately file a surety, I with some community leaders become the warrantor,” said Rizal. Then, what about the recent condition of the residents? Rizal said they will persist. Now, some of them spend the night at neighboring family, while some others sleep in a tent and in the mosque. However, he had already explained to the residents that they will soon receive certificate of their land for the 36 families affected by the execution. “I emphasize that before a month the land will be recovered. There has been cancellation of certificate from the national land agency (BPN),” he said. Does the cancellation of the certificate go through the process of lawsuit? SINGARAJA - Dozens of hectares of paddy fields in Buleleng are prone to be affected by tidal waves. Paddy fields spreading across Sawan and Kubutambahan subdistrict are directly adjacent to seashore. If tidal waves strike again, some paddy fields planted with rice and the others being cultivated are threatened by the blows of tidal waves. So far, the seashore bordering with the paddy fields has not been protected with concrete revetment. As observed on Wednesday (Jan. 4), the paddy fields at Sangsit and Kerobokan village (Sawan subdistrict) spread across respectively five hectares. In addition, the other ten hectares are at Kubutambahan village (Kubutambahan subdistrict). Currently, most of these paddy fields have been planted with rice with the age of about two weeks. The rest is being cultivated by farmers. In the meantime, the recent extreme weather still overwhelms the seashore of Buleleng and tidal waves are predicted to peak until February 2017, so that this situation can cause significant damages to crops. Head of the Buleleng Agriculture and Livestock Agency, Nyoman Swatantra, said at his office last Wednesday that since the extreme weather hit his agency does not received any reports on the damages to rice due to the impact of tidal waves. At present, his agency has commissioned the agricultural extension officers (PPL) to monitor each target area. In addition, the agency intensively provides appeals to farmers through the meeting of subak (irrigation cooperative) group so as to consider planting time in order to avoid damages to crops due to the blows of tidal waves.
“For the time being, there have been no reports regarding the damages to paddy fields caused by the tidal waves. We’ve urged farmers to pay attention to weather condition. If it indeed does not support, the planting can be delayed. Otherwise, wait for good weather and make preparation to allow early planting,” he explained. According to him, the pounding tidal waves that soak the plants surely cause the plants to die. If the plants are only exposed to hazes of seawater due to high winds during tidal waves the leaves of rice will turn yellow and dry out. However, the lower stems and the plants can still grow normally. In addition, they can still add clumps of the seedlings planted. “Seawater contains salt. If soaking paddy plants in long time, it can cause them to totally die. Differently, if the plants are only exposed to hazes of seawater, the leaves turn yellow and after that they will grow back to normal and their clumps still grow like normal plants,” he explained. On the other hand, Swatantra said that to anticipate losses of plants due to tidal waves, his agency has made preparation to help farmers. This assistance covers seed replacement and the program of repairing irrigation facilities. Thus, the paddy fields hit by tidal waves can then treated with sufficient irrigation so that the effects of seawater can be overcome. As a result, the losses can be prevented by farmers. “We’ve been anticipating. Once the extreme weather strikes again, we will coordinate with BPM-PD to make short-term and long-term handling, so that these efforts will minimize the losses suffered by our farmers,” added Swatantra. Gedong Kirtya hard to add manuscript collections
GEDONG Kirtya is still known as a repository of thousands of palm-leaf manuscripts. It does not only intrigue the interest of local people to visit, but also foreign travelers. A variety of information related to manuscript can be explored in this museum. However, beyond its function as a source of education, the institution having been established for decades remains to be entangled by some problems. What are they? Buleleng district is not only rich in natural beauty being able to draw travelers to visit. Having examined further, the region nicknamed as the land of Panji Sakti has a very important institution. It is the Gedong Kirtya. When setting foot at Gedong Kirtya, the atmosphere is quite different. From the entrance gates, we can have seen older buildings established before the era of independence. From outside, it looks very lonely. Only some few people are passing by. However, after tracing further inwardly, our eyes will be faced with thousands of palm-leaf manuscripts stored in wooden boxes. They do not only belong to one category, but many categories. The palm-leaf manuscripts containing a variety of science have recently become a public appeal, especially among the local students. When holidays arrive, many domestic and foreign travelers see the collections. Some of them are curious about the motif of the scripts made by knife. Behind the increasing public interest to study the manuscripts, the management has desire to
increase the number of collection. One of the ways is by copying the palm-manuscripts in the community. However, it just remains in a dream because the budget is very limited. “We want to increase the collection of palm-leaf manuscript, but cannot do it. It’s still hampered by budgetary matter,” said Chief of Gedong Kirtya, Putu Gede Wiriasa, on Tuesday (Jan. 3). Every year, he said the museum just gets a budget of IDR 350 million to IDR 400 million. It will run out just to meet the operating needs as well as printing a number of books required by society. “Most budgets are spent to meet the needs of general public like printing of books,” he said. Copying cost of the palm-leaf manuscript is not fairly cheap like a printed book. Each page of the palm-leaf manuscript with a length of 35 cm will cost about IDR 25,000. If multiplied by the number of palm-leaf manuscript as a whole, the cost becomes very large. “Each volume costs very expensive. Moreover, we want to copy the palm-leaf manuscripts recorded in the community. It must be very large,” he said. Faced with such problems, Wiriasa admitted that the program related to the preservation of manuscripts carried out is only limited to the data collection in the community. If there are researchers in need of reference in the form of palm-leaf manuscript, the data can be used as reference. “Despite the low budget, we still come down to the community to make data collection. It poses one of the conservation efforts,” he added. (sos)

MANGUPURA - “Now, are in True Bali Experience,” said IGAA Indha Trimafo Yudha, the owner of PT. Kasianan operating the True Bali Experience tourist attraction, when opening the conversation during a site inspection by some media recently.
True Bali Experience is a private company operating the nature adventure tourism activities, conservation and agro-tourism located at Carang Sari village, Petang. The experiences offered include whitewater rafting. The rafting business has run for 16 years, and becomes the first local rafting company. “We are a part of Carang Sari community, Petang,” she said. Over time, the management began to escort travelers, introduced the potential owned by local village while riding bicycle to Bedugul, passed through forest and walked. Then, three years ago her company processed cacao pods. Other than rafting, nature tourism and cacao processing, in 2005 the True Bali Experience with the area of 16 hectares started to introduce the concept of Elephant Camp. To open the Elephant Camp, the company must cooperate with central government, the Ministry of Forestry and natural resources conservation agency (KSDA) that later on became a partner. “We are given the right to become an elephant conservation agency in particular by adopting from Riau and Lampung,” she said. The main requirements as well as the mission are to foster the conservation, regeneration process as well as take care of the elephants. “Elephants are protected endangered animals. Since Bali is the gates and ambassador of Indonesia, the government then
provides an opportunity to introduce the rare animals into tourism sector. Pursuant to our main mission, we have succeeded to breed the elephants. This year, two baby elephants were born,” she explained. A total of 13 elephants were brought in at a fairly young age. One of the characteristics of happy elephants can be seen from their success in the matter of breeding. Going up to the assembly point, all the journalists were invited to the location of chocolate processing. There, the machine only has the capacity of processing cacao as much as 5 tons a month. She opened the cacao processing (factory) in Mengwi in 2016 that can process nine folds or a total of 45 tons a month. “It can be imagined that we have the capacity of accommodating labor and cacao production. Thus, we do not only export raw materials but also products with added-value,” she explained. She deliberately does not have any cocoa plants because she wanted to purchase from farmers so that farmers will not export raw materials only. Formerly, the tourist visit to her factory reached 40-100 people. She admitted that her company must share tourist visit because there are also similar concept elsewhere. “Like in the current rainy season, guests prefer to take indoor activities,” she said. With so many similar businesses in Bali, she strived to continuously innovate and think creatively. “We’re trying to create something with the concept of one-stop-shopping, or by knowing the character of guests whether they are European guests that are used to seeing something glamorous. Australia, Indonesia seek to patch up wounds over military row

A traveler from Surakarta named Kwan Anto Randy Saputro, 57, fell down from the cliff as high as 100 meters at Uluwatu tourist attraction, South Kuta, on Wednesday (Jan. 4). Due to the incident, the late was killed in pathetic condition due to concussion. This unlucky traveler was previously on vacation with his wife, Auw Jang Phin Khuan, 51. According to Saputro, an eyewitness, Anto had passed the fence and seemed to stand too close to the cliff edge. Suddenly he slipped and fell into
the gorge. Responding to the incident, Made Sumerta as the manager of the tourist attraction contacted the national SAR agency in Denpasar around 12:15. Through his report, Sumerta explained that the victim’s
condition has been seen lifeless and being adrift in the ocean currents. At 12:30, the rescue team drove to location by deploying a total of 25 personnel and personnel transport truck, SAR rapid deployment unit and evacuation vehicle. Gede Darmada, Operation Section Head of the SAR Agency, who came down to the location leading as the on-scene commander said that at that time the tidal waves began to go higher and the slope
is quite steep. It is only accessible from above. Previously, two rescue personnel were sent down from the cliff side to secure the victim’s position located 20 meters from the beach. However, since the tidal waves began to go higher, the rescue team got difficulties and could not reach the victim’s location. Finally, it was decided to use a vertical rescue technique. Australia’s defence minister said an investigation into the teaching materials, found at Campbell Barracks in the west Australian city of Perth, would be concluded “imminently”. “We have indicated our regret that this occurred and that offence was taken. I think that’s appropriate when a significant counterpart raises their concerns with you,” Payne told reporters in Sydney. Australia would present the findings of the report to Indonesia’s government and military, Payne said. She denied allegations, reportedly made by Indonesia’s Armed Forces Chief Gatot Nurmantyo in a lecture last year, that Australia had tried to recruit Indonesian soldiers as agents during training. DENPASAR - Alleged to get involved in drug case belonging to hashish type, two foreigners were transferred by police to Denpasar district attorney on Wednesday (Jan. 4). Section head of general crime of Denpasar district attorney, Ketut Maha Agung, said that the suspect is alleged to get involved in the illicit goods belonging to hashish. The evidence that handed over by police is hashish with the weight of 7.32 grams owned by Giuseppe and hashish with the weight of 10.09 grams owned by David. He said that both suspects in a separate file are charged under Article 111 Paragraph 1, Article 115 Paragraph 1, Article 127 Paragraph 1 letter a of the Law No.35/2009 on narcotics. To be noted, when seeing the articles, said the section head of general crime, the suspects can be charged with a maximum penalty of 12 years. KUALA LUMPUR - Myanmar faces a growing danger of attacks by foreign supporters of Islamic State (IS) recruited from Southeast Asian networks in support of persecuted Muslim Rohingyas, Malaysia’s top counter-terrorism official has said. Malaysian authorities have detained a suspected IS follower planning to head to Myanmar to carry out attacks, the head of the Malaysian police counter-terrorism division, Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay, said in an interview. The suspect, an Indonesian whom he did not identify, was detained in Malaysia last month. The suspect was scheduled to be charged on Wednesday for possession of materials linked to terrorist groups, which carries a seven-year jail term or fine, Ayob Khan said. More militants are likely to try to follow his lead in support of the Rohingya cause, Ayob Khan said.
“He was planning to perform jihad in Myanmar, fighting against the Myanmar government for this Rohingya group in Rakhine State,” Ayob Khan said. A Myanmar army sweep since October in the north of Rakhine State, on its border with Bangladesh, has sent about 34,000 members of the Rohingya minority fleeing into Bangladesh, the United Nations says. Residents and rights groups accuse security forces in predominantly Buddhist Myanmar of summary executions and rape in the army operation, launched in response to attacks on police posts on Oct. 9 that killed nine officers. The government of Aung San Suu Kyi denies the accusations of abuse. BUSINESS China’s choices narrowing as it burns through FX reserves to support yuan
SINGAPORE - As China’s foreign exchange reserves threaten to tumble below the critical $3 trillion mark, the biggest fear for investors is not whether Beijing can continue to defend the yuan but whether it will set off a vicious cycle of more outflows and currency depreciation. Data this week is expected to show China’s forex reserves precariously perched just above $3 trillion at end-December, the lowest level since February 2011, according to a Reuters poll. While the world’s second-largest economy still has the largest stash of forex reserves by far, it has been churning through them rapidly since August 2015, when it stunned global investors by devaluing the yuan and moving to what it promised would be a slightly freer and more transparent currency regime. Since then, authorities have repeatedly intervened to support the yuan when it weakened too sharply, burning through half a trillion dollars of reserves and prompting them to sell some of their massive holdings of U.S. government bonds. They also have put a tightening regulatory chokehold on individuals and businesses who want to move money out of the country, while denying they were imposing new capital controls. Concerns over the speed with which China is depleting its ammunition are swirling, with some analysts estimating it needs to retain a minimum of $2.6 trillion to $2.8 trillion under the International Monetary Fund’s adequacy measures. “There has been quite a bit of anxiety and speculation because the way many people in China talk about it is ‘will the government defend the 7-per-dollar level or the 3 trillion dollars’,” said Louis Kuijs, head of Asia economics at Oxford Economics in Hong Kong. China stepped into both its onshore and offshore yuan markets this week to shore up the yuan as it neared the 7 level, sparking speculation that it wants to regain a firm grip ahead of the Jan. 20 inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who has threatened to brand

But if forex reserves continue to be depleted at a fast pace and capital flight continues, some strategists believe China’s leaders may have little choice but to sanction another big “oneoff” devaluation. That could set off competitive currency devaluations by other struggling emerging economies, even as the world braces for greater trade protectionism under Trump. MORE CONTROLS To slow the yuan’s decline without depleting reserves at an ever faster pace, analysts and economists expect authorities to turn to even tighter regulatory measures, including more scrutiny of outbound investments, overseas lending and export revenues, and closing loopholes in existing capital controls. But as fast as authorities jump to control one exit ramp, others may open up unless Beijing can reverse the market’s mind-set that the yuan is on a one-way depreciation path. “It doesn’t matter if there’s actually enough reserves or not,” said Joey Chew, Asia foreign exchange strategist at HSBC, who believes China doesn’t need a buffer of more than $2 trillion. “If people think there won’t be enough they’ll try to get out and it becomes a selffulfilling mechanism. “The authorities are already aware that trying to run down reserves will be counterproductive, which is why they’re relying on regulatory controls,” she added. As recently as last week, authorities introduced requirements for financial institutions to report all single domestic and overseas cash transactions of more than 50,000 yuan ($7,212.72) from July onwards, down from

Aramco Raises Oil Pricing to Asia and U.S. as OPEC Cuts Output Saudi Arabia raised pricing for February oil sales to Asia and increased premiums for light grades to the U.S. as the world’s largest crude exporter prepares to reduce output to help counter a global oversupply. State-owned Saudi Arabian Oil Co., known as Saudi Aramco, increased its official pricing for Arab Light crude to Asia by 60 cents a barrel to 15 cents below the regional benchmark, it said in an e-mailed statement. The company had been expected to increase the
pricing for shipments of Arab Light crude by 50 cents a barrel, according to the median estimate in a Bloomberg survey of five refiners and traders. Oil jumped 52 percent last year, its first annual gain in four years as OPEC agreed to reduce production for the first time in eight years. The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and 11 other producers, including Russia, agreed to decrease output by 1.8 million barrels a day this year after prices had dropped more than half from
the 2014 level. Crude is set to recover as OPEC fulfills its agreement, Khalid AlFalih, Saudi Arabia’s energy minister, said last month in Riyadh. The intervention is intended to “nudge along” a re-balancing of the oil market, as prices will need to rise to encourage investment in new supplies, Al-Falih said in an interview. Crude will balance between $50 and $100 a barrel, he said. Buyers in the U.S. will pay premiums that are 20 cents a barrel higher for both Extra Light and Light grade
crudes in February, while pricing for Medium and Heavy blends remains unchanged, according to the statement. obligation to cut production by 486,000 barrels a day to just under 10.1 million. Middle Eastern producers compete with cargoes from Latin America, North Africa and Russia for buyers in Asia, its largest market. Producers in the Persian Gulf region sell mostly under long-term contracts to refiners. Most of the Gulf’s state oil companies price their crude at a premium or discount to a benchmark. New York train crash injures more than 100 commuters
NEW YORK - A New York City train derailed at a downtown Brooklyn terminal during Wednesday’s morning rush hour, injuring more than 100 commuters in the metropolitan area’s second major rail accident since late September.

Traveling at a fairly slow speed, it derailed after striking a bumping block, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said at the briefing. A National Transportation Safety Board investigator told reporters that about 430 passengers and three crew members were on board the train at the time of the collision and that 104 people were injured. The front two cars of the six-carriage train were severely damaged. The station’s partitions and bumping block, which prevents railway vehicles from going past the end of a section of track, were also damaged. Passengers said the blood and chaos following the derailment were frightening. “There were people crying,” said Aaron Neufeld, a 26-year-old paralegal who commutes on the rail line daily. “I saw some bloody faces.” Neufeld, who was riding in the second car, said the train appeared to be approaching normally until it crashed, knocking passengers on top of one another and shattering glass windows. “Bags went flying,” he said. “People were thrown to the ground.” The engineer was probably responsible for failing to stop the train before it hit the bumper, said Tom Prendergast, chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the agency that runs the railroad. The train was traveling between 10 and 15 miles per hour (16 to 24 km per hour) as it approached the bumper, he said, which is standard. “At that speed, it’s pretty much the locomotive engineer’s responsibility to stop the train,” Prendergast said as he stood beside Cuomo at the briefing. Brazil prison riot, a ‘butchery foretold,’ sparks fear of more killings
SAO PAULO - The killing of 56 inmates by fellow prisoners in Brazil’s deadliest jail uprising in decades was a “butchery foretold” by escalating turf wars between drug gangs that threatens to plunge a chaotic penitentiary system deeper into violence. Prior to this week’s massacre of members of the First Capital Command (PCC) in the Anisio Jobim penitentiary in the jungle city of Manaus, security experts warned for months about intensifying clashes in prisons between Brazil’s two most powerful drug gangs - the Sao Paulo-based PCC and the Red Command, based in Rio de Janeiro. Now they fear the feud will escalate in prisons and on the streets of the South American nation of 207 million people. Rio, Brazil’s most popular tourist destination, is particularly vulnerable, along with major cities in the north and northeast, the experts say. “This situation is tense, very ripe for new tragedies,” said Camila Dias, a sociologist at the Federal University of ABC in Sao Paulo, who is an expert on Brazil’s prison system and author of a book on the PCC. “This was a butchery foretold.” For more than two decades, the PCC and Red Command maintained an uneasy working relationship to ensure a steady flow of
marijuana, cocaine and guns over Brazil’s porous borders and into its cities. But in June the partnership ended with the killing of Jorge Rafaat Toumani, a powerful Brazilian drug lord based in Paraguay who controlled trafficking routes along Brazil’s southeastern border. While Toumani was not publicly affiliated to one group or another, and details of his death remain murky, Paraguayan officials believe he was killed at the PCC’s behest so it could seize his lucrative trafficking routes. What is clear, security experts say, is that the PCC has taken control of Toumani’s former domain. As a result, relations between the PCC and Red Command fell apart. Communications between the factions’ leaders obtained by police and leaked in October, revealed a race to become Brazil’s dominant gang. That same month, clashes between gang members in three prisons elsewhere in Brazil’s Amazon left 22 dead. Control of the drug gangs’ turf has been increasingly balkanized in recent months. That has left the Red Command weaker and allowed the PCC - powered by proceeds from their base in Sao Paulo, Brazil’s richest city - to encroach on their turf in Rio. (rtr)

Govt to set up cyber agency to fight fake news
JAKARTA - The Indonesian government will soon establish a National Cyber Agency to help overcome the threat of fake news that aims to spread slanderous messages and hatred through social media. President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) had instructed him during a meeting to immediately establish the National Cyber Agency, according to Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Wiranto. The president had directed that the agency be formed at the earliest to curb the spread of false news that could threaten people and harm their interests. The spread of hoax messages through the social media, among others, can create confusion and doubts about the veracity of the information. Irresponsible parties can thus exploit this confusion created to sow hatred, and create disunity and hostility among the people, the minister explained. “We are technologically advanced now. We are grateful that technology has facilitated better education and helped disseminate information faster, but we are also concerned because individuals could use it to spread defamatory material. This confuses people,” Wiranto stressed on Tuesday (January 3). If this happens, the nations de-
velopment will be hampered. It will put the people, nation and the state at a disadvantage. People should be responsible while using technology and spreading information, Wiranto pointed out that. “So, we will regulate the spread of false news in the social media. All are free to express opinions; they are allowed to do so, but they should do it in an elegant and respectable manner,” Wiranto stated. Noting that the social media has a huge influence on the public, Director General of Culture of the Ministry of Education and Culture Hilmar Farid said many were still unable to differentiate between fake and real news. Even professors, doctors and academicians were likely to believe the information available on the social media, Farid added. “The social media has an extraordinary influence. A false piece of information, which is given a picture and a title, can spread quickly (after it is uploaded),” the director general said. Usually, those who believe in hoax materials belong to the transitional generation. JAKARTA - The Indonesia Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has summoned House Speaker Setya Novanto as a witness in an electronic identity card (e-ID) corruption case. “Setya Novanto has been called as a witness for suspect Sugiharto,” KPK spokesman Febri Diansyah stated here, Wednesday. This is the second time that the KPK has summoned Novanto after the first one on December 13, 2016, for the case that occurred during the
Nov 2011-2012 period, when he was the treasurer of Golkar Party and concurrently head of the Golkar Party sanction at the Parliament. Novanto denied that members of Commission II of the House of Representatives had received bribe money for the e-ID project. In addition to Novanto, the KPK has summoned Director of PT. Gajendra Adhi Sakti Azmin Aulia, businessman Afdal Noverman, and auditor of the Financial and Development Supervisory Agency
(BPKP) Mahmud Toha Siregar. The KPK has named two suspects in the e-ID corruption case: former director general of population and civil administration of the Home Affairs Ministry Irman and Population Administration Information Manager of the Home Affairs Ministry Sugiharto. ‘Game over’ declares Al-Attiyah after Dakar drama
SAN MIGUEL - Nasser Al-Attiyah’s hopes of repeating his 2011 and 2015 Dakar Rally victories disappeared on Wednesday after the Qatari ripped a wheel off his Toyota and lost two hours and 17 minutes on a third stage won by reigning champion Stephane Peterhansel. Al-Attiyah had been set to regain the lead from nine times world rally champion Sebastien Loeb when he hit trouble between San Miguel de Tucuman and San Salvador de Jujuy in Argentina. The Qatari went off-piste and hit a hole at around the 414 km mark. The winner of the first stage, and runner-up on day two, got going about an hour later at slow speed but had to stop again after another 30km. While Al-Attiyah is likely to continue, with the rally heading to Bolivia and Paraguay before ending in Buenos Aires, the setback means he will have to focus on individual stage wins rather than the overall prize. “Game over. LONDON — Dele Alli underlined his growing reputation by single-handedly ending Chelsea’s 13-match winning run Wednesday, scoring two headed goals to give Tottenham a 2-0 victory over the Premier League leaders. The defense has been the bedrock of Chelsea’s three-month hot streak but Alli was gifted space to score carbon copy goals in each half at White Hart Lane after meeting crosses from Christian Eriksen. LOME - Striker Emmanuel Adebayor will captain Togo at the African Nations Cup despite being without a club since leaving Premier League side Crystal Palace last May, the country’s football federation said on Thursday. Adebayor and veteran goalkeeper Kossi Agassa are currently free agents yet both were included in the 23-man squad for the tournament starting later this month in Gabon. Agassa, 38, left French club Stade Reims last season while Adebayor has only played for Togo in the last eight months, although he has been linked with a possible move to French Ligue 1 side Montpellier once the tournament concludes. Cahill confident Chelsea will soon shrug off Spurs defeat
Chelsea defender Gary Cahill expects the side to draw strength from their extended winning run in the Premier League and not dwell on the 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on Wednesday. A Dele Alli brace either side of the break ended a remarkable 13-game streak that has taken Chelsea five points clear at the top of the standings but Cahill remains adamant that the loss will not derail their title bid. “We were short all over the pitch, I don’t know why. “It was a great opportunity for us but one defeat out of 14 is not a problem. LOME - Striker Emmanuel Adebayor will captain Togo at the African Nations Cup despite being without a club since leaving Premier League side Crystal Palace last May, the country’s football federation said on Thursday. Adebayor and veteran goalkeeper Kossi Agassa are currently free agents yet both were included in the 23-man squad for the tournament starting later this month in Gabon. Agassa, 38, left French club Stade Reims last season while Adebayor has only played for Togo in the last eight months, although he has been linked with a possible move to French Ligue 1 side Montpellier once the tournament concludes. Cahill confident Chelsea will soon shrug off Spurs defeat
Chelsea defender Gary Cahill expects the side to draw strength from their extended winning run in the Premier League and not dwell on the 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on Wednesday. A Dele Alli brace either side of the break ended a remarkable 13-game streak that has taken Chelsea five points clear at the top of the standings but Cahill remains adamant that the loss will not derail their title bid. “We were short all over the pitch, I don’t know why. ‘Game over’ declares Al-Attiyah after Dakar drama
SAN MIGUEL - Nasser Al-Attiyah’s hopes of repeating his 2011 and 2015 Dakar Rally victories disappeared on Wednesday after the Qatari ripped a wheel off his Toyota and lost two hours and 17 minutes on a third stage won by reigning champion Stephane Peterhansel. Al-Attiyah had been set to regain the lead from nine times world rally champion Sebastien Loeb when he hit trouble between San Miguel de Tucuman and San Salvador de Jujuy in Argentina. The Qatari went off-piste and hit a hole at around the 414 km mark. The winner of the first stage, and runner-up on day two, got going about an hour later at slow speed but had to stop again after another 30km. While Al-Attiyah is likely to continue, with the rally heading to Bolivia and Paraguay before ending in Buenos Aires, the setback means he will have to focus on individual stage wins rather than the overall prize. “Game over. New York train crash injures more than 100 commuters
NEW YORK - A New York City train derailed at a downtown Brooklyn terminal during Wednesday’s morning rush hour, injuring more than 100 commuters in the metropolitan area’s second major rail accident since late September.
Emergency crews swarmed Atlantic Terminal after the Long Island Rail Road train went off the tracks inside the busy transportation hub at 8:20 a.m. local time (1320 GMT), the New York City Fire Department said. Traveling at a fairly slow speed, it derailed after striking a bumping block, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said at the briefing. A National Transportation Safety Board investigator told reporters that about 430 passengers and three crew members were on board the train at the time of the collision and that 104 people were injured. The front two cars of the six-carriage train were severely damaged. The station’s partitions and bumping block, which prevents railway vehicles from going past the end of a section of track, were also damaged. Passengers said the blood and chaos following the derailment were frightening. “There were people crying,” said Aaron Neufeld, a 26-year-old paralegal who commutes on the rail line daily. “I saw some bloody faces.” Neufeld, who was riding in the second car, said the train appeared to be approaching normally until it crashed, knocking passengers on top of one another and shattering glass windows. “Bags went flying,” he said. “People were thrown to the ground.” The engineer was probably responsible for failing to stop the train before it hit the bumper, said Tom Prendergast, chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the agency that runs the railroad. The train was traveling between 10 and 15 miles per hour (16 to 24 km per hour) as it approached the bumper, he said, which is standard. “At that speed, it’s pretty much the locomotive engineer’s responsibility to stop the train,” Prendergast said as he stood beside Cuomo at the briefing. But in Mexico’s Ciudad Juarez, where extensive fencing was erected by the United States to secure the border between 2007 and 2010, residents have a more nuanced view of what a wall can mean. They say the Juarez fence has both caused and relieved problems in the city and nearby areas. Some say the barrier has made life in Juarez better, diverting drug and human traffickers to more remote spots where crossing the border is easier. Others say the high fence bred a new kind of crime in the city, encouraging drug dealers
who find it harder to get wares across the border to divert some of their product to expanding and serving a local market. Juarez’s newly elected mayor, Armando Cabada, sees both sides. Brazil prison riot, a ‘butchery foretold,’ sparks fear of more killings
SAO PAULO - The killing of 56 inmates by fellow prisoners in Brazil’s deadliest jail uprising in decades was a “butchery foretold” by escalating turf wars between drug gangs that threatens to plunge a chaotic penitentiary system deeper into violence. Prior to this week’s massacre of members of the First Capital Command (PCC) in the Anisio Jobim penitentiary in the jungle city of Manaus, security experts warned for months about intensifying clashes in prisons between Brazil’s two most powerful drug gangs - the Sao Paulo-based PCC and the Red Command, based in Rio de Janeiro. Now they fear the feud will escalate in prisons and on the streets of the South American nation of 207 million people. Rio, Brazil’s most popular tourist destination, is particularly vulnerable, along with major cities in the north and northeast, the experts say. “This situation is tense, very ripe for new tragedies,” said Camila Dias, a sociologist at the Federal University of ABC in Sao Paulo, who is an expert on Brazil’s prison system and author of a book on the PCC. “This was a butchery foretold.” For more than two decades, the PCC and Red Command maintained an uneasy working relationship to ensure a steady flow of
marijuana, cocaine and guns over Brazil’s porous borders and into its cities. But in June the partnership ended with the killing of Jorge Rafaat Toumani, a powerful Brazilian drug lord based in Paraguay who controlled trafficking routes along Brazil’s southeastern border. While Toumani was not publicly affiliated to one group or another, and details of his death remain murky, Paraguayan officials believe he was killed at the PCC’s behest so it could seize his lucrative trafficking routes. What is clear, security experts say, is that the PCC has taken control of Toumani’s former domain. As a result, relations between the PCC and Red Command fell apart. Communications between the factions’ leaders obtained by police and leaked in October, revealed a race to become Brazil’s dominant gang. That same month, clashes between gang members in three prisons elsewhere in Brazil’s Amazon left 22 dead. Control of the drug gangs’ turf has been increasingly balkanized in recent months. That has left the Red Command weaker and allowed the PCC - powered by proceeds from their base in Sao Paulo, Brazil’s richest city - to encroach on their turf in Rio. (rtr)

Govt to set up cyber agency to fight fake news
JAKARTA - The Indonesian government will soon establish a National Cyber Agency to help overcome the threat of fake news that aims to spread slanderous messages and hatred through social media. President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) had instructed him during a meeting to immediately establish the National Cyber Agency, according to Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Wiranto. The president had directed that the agency be formed at the earliest to curb the spread of false news that could threaten people and harm their interests. The spread of hoax messages through the social media, among others, can create confusion and doubts about the veracity of the information. Irresponsible parties can thus exploit this confusion created to sow hatred, and create disunity and hostility among the people, the minister explained. “We are technologically advanced now. We are grateful that technology has facilitated better education and helped disseminate information faster, but we are also concerned because individuals could use it to spread defamatory material. This confuses people,” Wiranto stressed on Tuesday (January 3). If this happens, the nations de-
velopment will be hampered. It will put the people, nation and the state at a disadvantage. People should be responsible while using technology and spreading information, Wiranto pointed out that. “So, we will regulate the spread of false news in the social media. All are free to express opinions; they are allowed to do so, but they should do it in an elegant and respectable manner,” Wiranto stated. Noting that the social media has a huge influence on the public, Director General of Culture of the Ministry of Education and Culture Hilmar Farid said many were still unable to differentiate between fake and real news. Even professors, doctors and academicians were likely to believe the information available on the social media, Farid added. “The social media has an extraordinary influence. A false piece of information, which is given a picture and a title, can spread quickly (after it is uploaded),” the director general said. Usually, those who believe in hoax materials belong to the transitional generation. An additional investment of at least Rp1,000 trillion in 10 years would be needed to increase the assets of Pertamina 2.5 times of what it has at present and beat Petronas, Dwi Soetjipto, the president director of the state-owned oil and gas company, said here on Wednesday. Dwi said satisfactory performance was recorded by Pertamina in 2016 with profit of around Rp40 trillion (US$3 billion). “This was the first time Pertamina was ahead of
Petronas in term of profit,” he said. Pertamina reported around US$40 billion in income though declining as a result of oil price fall. In the first half of 2016, Pertamina reported US$2.38 billion in profit as against Petronas US$1.6 billion. Dwi attributed the good performance to improved efficiency in the past two years. In the past two years we have focused on improving efficiency. This is the second time that the KPK has summoned Novanto after the first one on December 13, 2016, for the case that occurred during the
Nov 2011-2012 period, when he was the treasurer of Golkar Party and concurrently head of the Golkar Party sanction at the Parliament. Novanto denied that members of Commission II of the House of Representatives had received bribe money for the e-ID project. In addition to Novanto, the KPK has summoned Director of PT. Gajendra Adhi Sakti Azmin Aulia, businessman Afdal Noverman, and auditor of the Financial and Development Supervisory Agency
(BPKP) Mahmud Toha Siregar. The KPK has named two suspects in the e-ID corruption case: former director general of population and civil administration of the Home Affairs Ministry Irman and Population Administration Information Manager of the Home Affairs Ministry Sugiharto. BUSINESS China’s choices narrowing as it burns through FX reserves to support yuan
SINGAPORE - As China’s foreign exchange reserves threaten to tumble below the critical $3 trillion mark, the biggest fear for investors is not whether Beijing can continue to defend the yuan but whether it will set off a vicious cycle of more outflows and currency depreciation. Data this week is expected to show China’s forex reserves precariously perched just above $3 trillion at end-December, the lowest level since February 2011, according to a Reuters poll. While the world’s second-largest economy still has the largest stash of forex reserves by far, it has been churning through them rapidly since August 2015, when it stunned global investors by devaluing the yuan and moving to what it promised would be a slightly freer and more transparent currency regime. Since then, authorities have repeatedly intervened to support the yuan when it weakened too sharply, burning through half a trillion dollars of reserves and prompting them to sell some of their massive holdings of U.S. government bonds. They also have put a tightening regulatory chokehold on individuals and businesses who want to move money out of the country, while denying they were imposing new capital controls. Concerns over the speed with which China is depleting its ammunition are swirling, with some analysts estimating it needs to retain a minimum of $2.6 trillion to $2.8 trillion under the International Monetary Fund’s adequacy measures. “There has been quite a bit of anxiety and speculation because the way many people in China talk about it is ‘will the government defend the 7-per-dollar level or the 3 trillion dollars’,” said Louis Kuijs, head of Asia economics at Oxford Economics in Hong Kong. China stepped into both its onshore and offshore yuan markets this week to shore up the yuan as it neared the 7 level, sparking speculation that it wants to regain a firm grip ahead of the Jan. 20 inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who has threatened to brand

But if forex reserves continue to be depleted at a fast pace and capital flight continues, some strategists believe China’s leaders may have little choice but to sanction another big “oneoff” devaluation. That could set off competitive currency devaluations by other struggling emerging economies, even as the world braces for greater trade protectionism under Trump. MORE CONTROLS To slow the yuan’s decline without depleting reserves at an ever faster pace, analysts and economists expect authorities to turn to even tighter regulatory measures, including more scrutiny of outbound investments, overseas lending and export revenues, and closing loopholes in existing capital controls. But as fast as authorities jump to control one exit ramp, others may open up unless Beijing can reverse the market’s mind-set that the yuan is on a one-way depreciation path. “It doesn’t matter if there’s actually enough reserves or not,” said Joey Chew, Asia foreign exchange strategist at HSBC, who believes China doesn’t need a buffer of more than $2 trillion. “If people think there won’t be enough they’ll try to get out and it becomes a selffulfilling mechanism. “The authorities are already aware that trying to run down reserves will be counterproductive, which is why they’re relying on regulatory controls,” she added. As recently as last week, authorities introduced requirements for financial institutions to report all single domestic and overseas cash transactions of more than 50,000 yuan ($7,212.72) from July onwards, down from

Aramco Raises Oil Pricing to Asia and U.S. as OPEC Cuts Output Saudi Arabia raised pricing for February oil sales to Asia and increased premiums for light grades to the U.S. as the world’s largest crude exporter prepares to reduce output to help counter a global oversupply. State-owned Saudi Arabian Oil Co., known as Saudi Aramco, increased its official pricing for Arab Light crude to Asia by 60 cents a barrel to 15 cents below the regional benchmark, it said in an e-mailed statement. The company had been expected to increase the
pricing for shipments of Arab Light crude by 50 cents a barrel, according to the median estimate in a Bloomberg survey of five refiners and traders. Oil jumped 52 percent last year, its first annual gain in four years as OPEC agreed to reduce production for the first time in eight years. The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and 11 other producers, including Russia, agreed to decrease output by 1.8 million barrels a day this year after prices had dropped more than half from
the 2014 level. Crude is set to recover as OPEC fulfills its agreement, Khalid AlFalih, Saudi Arabia’s energy minister, said last month in Riyadh. The intervention is intended to “nudge along” a re-balancing of the oil market, as prices will need to rise to encourage investment in new supplies, Al-Falih said in an interview. Crude will balance between $50 and $100 a barrel, he said. Buyers in the U.S. will pay premiums that are 20 cents a barrel higher for both Extra Light and Light grade
crudes in February, while pricing for Medium and Heavy blends remains unchanged, according to the statement. Saudi Aramco reduced pricing for all grades sold in Northwest Europe and the Mediterranean region next month. Saudi Arabia boosted output to a record 10.66 million barrels a day in July. obligation to cut production by 486,000 barrels a day to just under 10.1 million. Middle Eastern producers compete with cargoes from Latin America, North Africa and Russia for buyers in Asia, its largest market. Producers in the Persian Gulf region sell mostly under long-term contracts to refiners. Most of the Gulf’s state oil companies price their crude at a premium or discount to a benchmark. the gorge. Responding to the incident, Made Sumerta as the manager of the tourist attraction contacted the national SAR agency in Denpasar around 12:15. Through his report, Sumerta explained that the victim’s
condition has been seen lifeless and being adrift in the ocean currents. At 12:30, the rescue team drove to location by deploying a total of 25 personnel and personnel transport truck, SAR rapid deployment unit and evacuation vehicle. Gede Darmada, Operation Section Head of the SAR Agency, who came down to the location leading as the on-scene commander said that at that time the tidal waves began to go higher and the slope

KUALA LUMPUR - Myanmar faces a growing danger of attacks by foreign supporters of Islamic State (IS) recruited from Southeast Asian networks in support of persecuted Muslim Rohingyas, Malaysia’s top counter-terrorism official has said. Malaysian authorities have detained a suspected IS follower planning to head to Myanmar to carry out attacks, the head of the Malaysian police counter-terrorism division, Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay, said in an interview. The suspect, an Indonesian whom he did not identify, was detained in Malaysia last month. The suspect was scheduled to be charged on Wednesday for possession of materials linked to terrorist groups, which carries a seven-year jail term or fine, Ayob Khan said. More militants are likely to try to follow his lead in support of the Rohingya cause, Ayob Khan said.
“He was planning to perform jihad in Myanmar, fighting against the Myanmar government for this Rohingya group in Rakhine State,” Ayob Khan said. A Myanmar army sweep since October in the north of Rakhine State, on its border with Bangladesh, has sent about 34,000 members of the Rohingya minority fleeing into Bangladesh, the United Nations says. Residents and rights groups accuse security forces in predominantly Buddhist Myanmar of summary executions and rape in the army operation, launched in response to attacks on police posts on Oct. 9 that killed nine officers. The government of Aung San Suu Kyi denies the accusations of abuse. GEDONG Kirtya is still known as a repository of thousands of palm-leaf manuscripts. It does not only intrigue the interest of local people to visit, but also foreign travelers. A variety of information related to manuscript can be explored in this museum. However, beyond its function as a source of education, the institution having been established for decades remains to be entangled by some problems. What are they? Buleleng district is not only rich in natural beauty being able to draw travelers to visit. Having examined further, the region nicknamed as the land of Panji Sakti has a very important institution. It is the Gedong Kirtya. When setting foot at Gedong Kirtya, the atmosphere is quite different. From the entrance gates, we can have seen older buildings established before the era of independence. From outside, it looks very lonely. Only some few people are passing by. However, after tracing further inwardly, our eyes will be faced with thousands of palm-leaf manuscripts stored in wooden boxes. They do not only belong to one category, but many categories. The palm-leaf manuscripts containing a variety of science have recently become a public appeal, especially among the local students. When holidays arrive, many domestic and foreign travelers see the collections. Some of them are curious about the motif of the scripts made by knife. Behind the increasing public interest to study the manuscripts, the management has desire to
increase the number of collection. One of the ways is by copying the palm-manuscripts in the community. However, it just remains in a dream because the budget is very limited. “We want to increase the collection of palm-leaf manuscript, but cannot do it. It’s still hampered by budgetary matter,” said Chief of Gedong Kirtya, Putu Gede Wiriasa, on Tuesday (Jan. 3). Every year, he said the museum just gets a budget of IDR 350 million to IDR 400 million. It will run out just to meet the operating needs as well as printing a number of books required by society. “Most budgets are spent to meet the needs of general public like printing of books,” he said. Copying cost of the palm-leaf manuscript is not fairly cheap like a printed book. Each page of the palm-leaf manuscript with a length of 35 cm will cost about IDR 25,000. If multiplied by the number of palm-leaf manuscript as a whole, the cost becomes very large. “Each volume costs very expensive. Moreover, we want to copy the palm-leaf manuscripts recorded in the community. It must be very large,” he said. Faced with such problems, Wiriasa admitted that the program related to the preservation of manuscripts carried out is only limited to the data collection in the community. If there are researchers in need of reference in the form of palm-leaf manuscript, the data can be used as reference. “Despite the low budget, we still come down to the community to make data collection. The main requirements as well as the mission are to foster the conservation, regeneration process as well as take care of the elephants. “Elephants are protected endangered animals. Since Bali is the gates and ambassador of Indonesia, the government then
provides an opportunity to introduce the rare animals into tourism sector. Pursuant to our main mission, we have succeeded to breed the elephants. This year, two baby elephants were born,” she explained. A total of 13 elephants were brought in at a fairly young age. One of the characteristics of happy elephants can be seen from their success in the matter of breeding. Going up to the assembly point, all the journalists were invited to the location of chocolate processing. There, the machine only has the capacity of processing cacao as much as 5 tons a month. She opened the cacao processing (factory) in Mengwi in 2016 that can process nine folds or a total of 45 tons a month. “It can be imagined that we have the capacity of accommodating labor and cacao production. Thus, we do not only export raw materials but also products with added-value,” she explained. She deliberately does not have any cocoa plants because she wanted to purchase from farmers so that farmers will not export raw materials only. Formerly, the tourist visit to her factory reached 40-100 people. She admitted that her company must share tourist visit because there are also similar concept elsewhere. “Like in the current rainy season, guests prefer to take indoor activities,” she said. With so many similar businesses in Bali, she strived to continuously innovate and think creatively. “We’re trying to create something with the concept of one-stop-shopping, or by knowing the character of guests whether they are European guests that are used to seeing something glamorous. Hectares of paddy fields prone to be pounded by tidal waves

Seven houses stated to be wrongly executed DENPASAR - House buildings located in the east of the road or on Jalan Tukad Bulan, Bugis kampong, Serangan, South Denpasar, have been razed to the ground. Only a pole house remains belonging to cultural heritage. After the execution, a total of 36 families of Bugis kampong affected by the execution do not know where to take shelter after their house has been dismantled by executor team of the Denpasar district court. But interestingly, the house of seven residents claimed to exclude from the 36 families was executed as well. The seven residents are Edi, Sulkivli, Mauludin, Husein, Sakaria, Siti Hajar and Muhayat. Their house is located behind the pole house. These residents will report the case to police. “There are seven houses outside the 36 families also executed. It is wrong and I have met the clerk of the court,” said Rizal Akbar Maya Poetra. Due to the wrong execution, he is going to report the case to police on Thursday. In the meantime, Spokesperson of Denpasar district court, I Made Sukereni, told that the court will not only hear unilaterally. However, it listens to both sides. Evidence has been at hand, so that chief of the Denpasar district court will not carry out the execu-
tion simply based on oral information but based on the existing data and evidences. Regarding the accusation of excessive execution, Sukereni said that the execution is carried out based on the verdict. If they do not accept the execution, they can sue. On the other hand, regarding the chaos during the execution last Wednesday, Rizal admitted that four residents of Bugis kampong were named suspects by police. They are Aditya Sulaiman, Amir Hadli, Harris Fadilah and Said Saddam. They armed with sharp weapon and one brought arrows. “For these suspects, we will immediately file a surety, I with some community leaders become the warrantor,” said Rizal. Then, what about the recent condition of the residents? Rizal said they will persist. Now, some of them spend the night at neighboring family, while some others sleep in a tent and in the mosque. However, he had already explained to the residents that they will soon receive certificate of their land for the 36 families affected by the execution. “I emphasize that before a month the land will be recovered. There has been cancellation of certificate from the national land agency (BPN),” he said. Does the cancellation of the certificate go through the process of lawsuit? SINGARAJA - Dozens of hectares of paddy fields in Buleleng are prone to be affected by tidal waves. Paddy fields spreading across Sawan and Kubutambahan subdistrict are directly adjacent to seashore. If tidal waves strike again, some paddy fields planted with rice and the others being cultivated are threatened by the blows of tidal waves. So far, the seashore bordering with the paddy fields has not been protected with concrete revetment. As observed on Wednesday (Jan. 4), the paddy fields at Sangsit and Kerobokan village (Sawan subdistrict) spread across respectively five hectares. In addition, the other ten hectares are at Kubutambahan village (Kubutambahan subdistrict). Currently, most of these paddy fields have been planted with rice with the age of about two weeks. The rest is being cultivated by farmers. In the meantime, the recent extreme weather still overwhelms the seashore of Buleleng and tidal waves are predicted to peak until February 2017, so that this situation can cause significant damages to crops. Head of the Buleleng Agriculture and Livestock Agency, Nyoman Swatantra, said at his office last Wednesday that since the extreme weather hit his agency does not received any reports on the damages to rice due to the impact of tidal waves. At present, his agency has commissioned the agricultural extension officers (PPL) to monitor each target area. In addition, the agency intensively provides appeals to farmers through the meeting of subak (irrigation cooperative) group so as to consider planting time in order to avoid damages to crops due to the blows of tidal waves.
“For the time being, there have been no reports regarding the damages to paddy fields caused by the tidal waves. We’ve urged farmers to pay attention to weather condition. If it indeed does not support, the planting can be delayed. Otherwise, wait for good weather and make preparation to allow early planting,” he explained. According to him, the pounding tidal waves that soak the plants surely cause the plants to die. If the plants are only exposed to hazes of seawater due to high winds during tidal waves the leaves of rice will turn yellow and dry out. However, the lower stems and the plants can still grow normally. In addition, they can still add clumps of the seedlings planted. “Seawater contains salt. If soaking paddy plants in long time, it can cause them to totally die. Differently, if the plants are only exposed to hazes of seawater, the leaves turn yellow and after that they will grow back to normal and their clumps still grow like normal plants,” he explained. On the other hand, Swatantra said that to anticipate losses of plants due to tidal waves, his agency has made preparation to help farmers. This assistance covers seed replacement and the program of repairing irrigation facilities. Thus, the paddy fields hit by tidal waves can then treated with sufficient irrigation so that the effects of seawater can be overcome. As a result, the losses can be prevented by farmers. “We’ve been anticipating. Once the extreme weather strikes again, we will coordinate with BPM-PD to make short-term and long-term handling, so that these efforts will minimize the losses suffered by our farmers,” added Swatantra. PALM SPRINGS - Hollywood stars Tom Hanks and Nicole Kidman were among the actors honoured at the Palm Springs International Film Festival on Monday night as the 2017 awards season began. Oscar winner Hanks received the “Icon Award” for his portrayal in drama “Sully” of pilot Captain Chesley Sullenberger, who in 2009 carried out a successful emergency plane landing in the Hudson River. Kidman took the “International Star Award” for “Lion”, in which she plays an Australian woman who adopts an Indian child.
