NASHVILLE, Tennessee — The infighting and hard feelings between The Everly Brothers were well-known, but surviving brother Don felt he had a special moment with his brother Phil before Phil’s passing Friday — even if the two weren’t together at the time. The “Marked for Death” actor told KNXV-TV that he is considering a shot at the state’s highest office and has had a talk about the bid with the selfproclaimed toughest sheriff in America. The 61-year-old made the comments while talking about his newly released reality series “Steven Seagal - Lawman: Maricopa County.” Seagal teamed up with Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio for the show that was shot in Arizona and airs on cable TV’s Reelz Channel. The martial arts expert is a member of Arpaio’s posse, made up of 3,000 unpaid civilians. He also has been deputized with sheriff’s offices in New Mexico, Texas and Louisiana and says he wants to increase border security.

Thousands of private car throng Gilimanuk Bali Post

BULELENG - Dozens of small to jumbo size billboards mounted at a number of strategic locations in the city of Singaraja were dismantled by force by the officers of the Buleleng Municipal Police, Thursday (Jan 2). In addition, hundreds of posters or banners installed on shade trees were also dismantled in the discipline operation. The dismantled billboards were known to have no permit of installation or the installation permit had expired. Dismantle of the large-size billboards, among others, were carried out on Jalan Ahmad Yani and in front of the Banjar Bali village office. Aside from having expired, the billboards were also assessed to protrude to the middle of the road. Chief of Buleleng Municipal Police, Putu Hartana, explained the disciplining action against the billboards was carried out on the request of the Office of Integrated Services (KPT) of Buleleng. “Since many unlicensed billboards were found lately, we then asked for help of the KPT to discipline the billboards
that do not have permission,” he said. Meanwhile, the Regent of Buleleng, Putu Agus Suradnyana, said his party was indeed necessary to make arrangement against the advertisement posted at strategic locations in Buleleng. All this time, the tax of advertisement received by local government was not comparable to the reality in the field. In addition, his party wanted to organize the appearance of the town so that no more billboards were installed at the locations that could endanger the public. “Contribution of the advertisement is very small. To that end, we are planning to arrange them in order the look of the town will not be damaged,” he said. Furthermore, said the regent, the county government would make a special zone for the installation of billboards. Each zone would have different tax rates depending on the degree of strategic zone. “We ask the KPT to make a comparative study to Denpasar city in order to explore and learn about the advertising management in terms of tax rates and placement zoning,” he said. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

HAVANA — Talk about sticker shock! Cubans are eagerly flocking to Havana car dealerships as a new law takes effect eliminating a special permit requirement that has greatly restricted vehicle ownership in the country. To their dismay on Friday, the first day the law was in force, they found sharply hiked prices, some of them light years beyond all but the most well-heeled islanders. A new Kia Rio hatchback that starts at $13,600 in the United States sells for $42,000 here, while a fresh-off-the-lot Peugeot 508 family car, the most luxurious of which lists for the equivalent of about $53,000 in the U.K., will set you back a cool $262,000. “Between all my family here in Cuba and over in Miami, we couldn’t come up with that kind of money,” said Gilbert Losada, a 28-year-old musical director. “We’re going to wait and see if they lower the prices, which are really crazy. We’re really disappointed.” Cuba’s Communist-run government traditionally has placed huge markups on retail goods and services paid for with hard currency, a policy that amounts to a tax on people who can afford such goods. The practice applies to everything from dried pasta, to household appliances, to Internet access. The astronomical sticker prices on the cars will likely mean fewer sales and the state leaving money on the table, noted Philip Peters, a longtime Cuba analyst and president of the Virginia-based Cuba Research Center. “There’s a lot more money to be
made at lower price points,” Peters said. “It’s a short-sighted tax-man’s mentality. ... Paradoxically, they mark it up so much that they’re not going to make any money. But that’s the mentality.” Havana legalized the sale of used cars by private individuals in 2011. But longstanding rules remained in place requiring Cubans to obtain a Transportation Ministry permit to purchase a new or used car from state-run dealerships. Permission took months or years to obtain, resulting in a black market in which car buyers would often quickly flip them for a big profit. The new law eliminates the need for a permit, but does not allow Cubans to import automobiles directly. The government retains its monopoly on that, and alone decides a vehicle’s market value. Some exceptions will still exist allowing diplomatic missions and foreign entities to import vehicles. The Ferrari-like price schedules for even mundane new cars are a signal that automotive scarcity and high demand will likely continue to reign in Cuba, which is
famous for the 1950s American cars that still rumble through the streets long after they became museum pieces elsewhere. Because replacing a car is so difficult, those lucky enough to own a finned Detroit classic or a boxy Russian import go to great lengths to keep them on the road as long as possible, swapping in makeshift parts and resorting to creative soldering. At a used car dealership in western Havana on Friday, there were a few relatively affordable options. A 1997 BMW was the cheapest vehicle and the first to sell shortly after the dealership opened at 8 a.m. It went for $14,457 to a young man who declined to talk to reporters, so it wasn’t known many miles it had previously logged. But even many of the used cars had eye-popping asking prices, such as a 2009 Hyundai minivan that listed for $110,000. “Let’s see if a revolutionary worker who lives honorably on his salary can come and buy a car at these prices,” said Guillermo Flores, a 27-year-old computer engineer. “This is a joke on the people.”
MIAMI — Model yachts, rustic fishing boats and wooden rafts dangle above visitors as they step into the new Perez Art Museum Miami. The colorful display is both a playful nod to South Florida’s maritime culture and a somber reference to the perilous journeys many make to get here. It is the perfect entry to a museum that channels the city around it: whimsical, vibrant, brimming with culture from across the Americas - and yes, a work in progress. The museum, which opened in December, still lacks a permanent blockbuster, but its retrospective of Chinese master and political dissident Ai Weiwei, on display through mid-March, should temporarily satisfy. And the museum’s eclectic and provocative collection, coupled with its bay front location, has quickly turned the PAMM - as locals already call it - into a must-see destination for tourists and natives. “Our biggest competition down here isn’t the other cultural institutions. It’s the beach, the water,” Museum director Thom Collins said. “So, rather than compete, the museum embraces its surroundings.” As in the rest of Miami’s booming downtown, visitors to the Perez Museum are immediately greeted by construction along the museum’s front plaza and at the site of a neighboring science museum, set to open in 2015. Once under the PAMM’s shaded deck, though, Ai Weiwei’s mammoth bronze animal Zodiac Heads welcome guests, and the call of gulls and ocean breezes take over. The Pritzker Prize-winning Swiss architect firm Herzog & de Meuron took pains to design an airy and hurricane resistant building, with a wide, shaded deck that can serve as the rare outdoor communal space in a city with scorching temperatures and no central park. Beneath the deck’s three-story slatted roof, shrubbery-covered columns hang like an abstract enchanted forest, pumping recaptured rainwater through hidden pipes to further cool the deck. Inside, strategically placed windows offer views of the beaches and downtown skyline and provide natural light, while an open floor plan ensures future exhibits can be shaped around new acquisitions. No space is wasted: the museum’s center staircase doubles as a theater that can be divided into two auditoriums. Ai’s retrospective, which includes symbolic crab piles, buckets of pearls, a maze of hundreds of bicycle wheels and an exploration of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, will be followed by a retrospective of Caribbean art and an exhibit by Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes, whose psychedelic color bursts have earned her fame throughout Latin America and Europe. Collins says that contemporary Latin American artists like Milhazes are sometimes overlooked by major U.S. museums. “Her work is so baroque and sexual, and often in the U.S. we are somewhat puritanical,” he said, “but it will be well received here.”

Foreign tourist visits surpass target Antara
DENPASAR - A total of 2.97 million foreign tourists visited the Indonesian island resort of Bali between January and November 2013, thus surpassing the target of 2.8 million, according to local bureau of statistics spokesman Amirudin. “In December alone around 300 thousand foreign tourists were recorded to have visited
the paradise island, making the number surpass the total target of 2.8 million in 2013,” Amirudin
stated here on Friday. According to him, the number of foreign tourists visiting Bali
during 11 months from January to November 2013 rose sharply to 11.50 percent from 2.67 million during the same period in the previous year. “Only around 30,657 foreign tourists visited Bali by cruise ship, while most arrived by flight

directly from their respective countries to Ngurah Rai airport,” Amirudin noted. He added that the number of tourists from Australia was still the highest, compared to that from other ASEAN, American, and European countries.
China dominates 77.20 percent of import products Bali Post

At least, as much as 77.20 percent or worth USD 42.64 million, imported products from the Bamboo Curtain country recorded the biggest market leader in almost all kinds of products, and then it was followed by Switzerland, Hong Kong, Singapore and the United States.

of certain products from China was estimated to continue in line with the population growth while on the other hand the domestic industry producing similar goods had not increased, so the imports continued to rise. “If there is no serious attention from the government for similar industries, dependence of our import is definitely getting higher. As consequence, it can be ascertained that we are unable to be a host in our own country,” he said.

Wayan Wenten, for instance, a cracker maker, also said that he could not say much to address the policy of Pertamina. “Obviously, it makes us more difficult,” he complained. It happened because the difference in the price offered was very high. “It means the right of the lower middle class people will be ‘robbed’ by the upper middle class. Dozens of houses in Kuta submerged in floods

MANGUPURA - The rain flushing for a few days lately had caused floods in Kuta area. On Thursday (Jan 2), dozens of homes in the vicinity of Jalan Nakula to Sunset Road and Legian to Seminyak flooded. The water height was estimated to reach 70 centimeters. Maximum water height inundating the residential areas and local villas happened in the morning. The most severe location was on Jalan Nakula leading to Sunset Road, Legian village. Such condition caused a number of residents whose home was most seriously hit by floods, including guests staying at villas, had to be evacuated by inflatable boat. The water began to recede during the day, with a height of about adult knee. In addition to the area of Legian village, some road sections at Seminyak also flooded. The most severe area was around Gang Baik-Baik. According to the Emergency and Logistics Division Head of the Badung Regional Mitigation Agency (BPBD), I Putu Ngurah Thomas Yuniarta, the cause of floods was the overflowing stream of Mati River. No fatalities were reported in the incident. Until Thursday afternoon, his party could not estimate the material loss due to the severe floods. In the disaster mitigation, dozens of joint personnel of the Indonesian Military, BPBD Badung and emergency service response (ESR) of Bali were deployed. Three inflatable boats were also deployed to evacuate residents. A merajan or family temple owned by Sumerta, 37, at Tundak hamlet, Mekarsari village, Baturiti, was destroyed by avalanche, Thursday (Jan 2). No victims were reported in the incident. However, a number of shrines in the merajan were badly damaged. Even, the wall compound was destroyed as well. The incident occurred around 20:00. Allegedly the unstable land after flushed by rain had caused the revetment over the family temple suddenly avalanched. Due to hard blow, materials of the revetment hit the wall of the family temple. At a luncheon in Istanbul with generally progovernment intellectuals, writers and journalists, Erdogan reiterated his view that shadowy groups in Turkey and abroad are conspiring to oust him from power. “What they wanted to do was an attempted assassination of the national will,” he said in the address later broadcast on television. “They tried to carry out a judicial coup in Turkey.... But we are going to oppose this operation, this December 17 plot that targeted the future, the stability of our country,” Erdogan said.

FRANKFURT - The European Central Bank looks set to ring in the New Year with interest rates on hold, but will have its work cut out for it in 2014, analysts say. The ECB’s policy-setting governing council is scheduled to hold its first meeting of this year on Thursday, but central bank watchers are not projecting any new measures just yet after a surprise rate cut in November. “The ECB’s governing council appears unlikely to make any substantive policy changes at its first policy meeting of the year,” said Jonathan Loynes at Capital Economics. “But the ongoing combination
of weak economic growth, a damagingly strong currency and poor liquidity conditions will maintain the pressure on the central bank to take further action to support the region’s fragile economic recovery in 2014,” he said. The ECB took markets by surprise in November and pared back its central “refi” refinancing rate by a quarter of a percentage point to a record low of 0.25 percent. The reason behind the move was an expectation that the single
currency area is facing a prolonged period of very low inflation. Area-wide inflation picked up fractionally in November, but analysts believe that does not sound the all-clear and the ECB may have to take further action again at some point. There is “no immediate need to act,” said Commerzbank economist Michael Schubert. “ECB council members signalled in recent weeks that they currently see no need for further measures,” the expert said. “Against this backdrop we expect that at ECB President Mario Draghi will merely emphasise once again that the ECB is ready to act,” Schubert suggested.
In addition to changing interest rates, the ECB could pump more liquidity into the financial system to get credit flowing again between banks and businesses, crucial if any economic upturn is to be sustained. For the moment, loans to businesses in the euro area are continuing to decline, new ECB data showed on Friday. Private sector loans dropped by 2.3 percent in November in a yearon-year comparison, after already contracting by 2.2 percent in October, the ECB calculated. The ECB already pumped more than 1.0 trillion euros ($1.3 trillion) into the banking system at the end of 2011 and the beginning of 2012 to avert a potentially disastrous
credit crunch. But the banks preferred to use the ultra-cheap cash to buy up sovereign bonds rather than lend it on to businesses and the ECB is considering ways of channelling the cash directly to businesses if it decides to open the liquidity gates once again. Berenberg Bank’s Schmieding said the weak credit data did suggest a possible credit crunch. However, “companies are -- on aggregate -- in such a comfortable financial position that they can reduce their bank loans and increase their cash reserves at the same time. On aggregate, companies do not need credit at the moment,” Schmieding suggested.

Highlighting that the US unemployment rate fell from 10 percent in 2009 to 7.0 percent recently, Bernanke nevertheless insisted: “Much progress has been made, but more remains to be done. “ The jobless rate “still is elevated,” he said, reiterating concerns about the “unusually high” number of long-term unemployed and declining participation in the labor force, in part probably due to workers discouraged by poor
job prospects. Bernanke said that an important factor holding back the economy was “disappointing” productivity growth. He said the Fed’s decision in mid-December to modestly taper its $85 billion a month assetpurchase program did not indicate any lesser commitment to maintain an easy-money policy “for as long as needed.” Instead, the taper “reflected the progress we have made toward our goal of substantial improvement in the labor market outlook that we set out when we began the current purchase program in September 2012.” The Fed intends to keep its key interest rate near zero “well past” the time that the unemployment threshold of 6.5 percent is crossed, he said, particularly if inflation continues to run below 2.0 percent. Bernanke emphasized his efforts to make the central bank more transparent, saying it had been one of his initial goals when he took the post in February 2006, just as the housing price bubble collapsed and triggered the financial crisis.

DENPASAR - The Association of Indonesia Tours and Travel Agencies (ASITA) of Bali Chapter is optimistic that tourism growth in 2014 will be positive compared to the previous year even though the global economy shows a slowing growth. “In 2014, we remain optimistic there will be an increase in the number of foreign and domestic tourist arrival to Bali. As tourism actors, I hope there will be an attempt to make it happen,” said Chairman of the ASITA Bali, Ketut Ardana, in Denpasar, recently. He said that such an increase was remarkably needed because the current number of hotel rooms in Bali had exceeded the capacity. As a consequence, it had an impact on the daily occupancy rate of hotels in Bali. “Daily hotel occupancy in Bali only reaches 60 percent. This figure remains small compared to the number of tourists visiting Bali in 2013 that increased by 13 percent,” he said. According to him, the number of hotel rooms was larger than the number of tourist arrivals, so the tariff war between the employers was inevitable. Although the government targeted tourist arrivals to Bali amounted to 3.1 million foreign tourists and 6 million domestic tourists, or diminished when compared to the realization in 2013 reaching 3.27 million foreign tourists and 6.5 million domestic tourists. “Nevertheless, we continue to set a target of the increase in tourist arrivals,” he said. Ketut Ardana said that his party set a target of 5 percent of the actual number of tourist arrival in 2013. “Yes, at least there is an increase, perhaps around 3.3 million tourists. However, we do not want Bali to become a cheap tourism and there must be an increase in quality,” he said. Meanwhile, the Bali government had targeted 3 million foreign tourist arrivals in 2014. Meanwhile, the highest price of harvest dry grain at farmer level occurred in Buleleng County at IDR 4,300 for Serang variety, while the lowest price occurred in Klungkung County at IDR 3,300 per kilogram for Ciherang variety. “Although selling grain of low quality, the average price of GKP quality grain in December 2013 was above the basic selling price (HPP), namely at IDR 3,300 per kilogram at farmer level and IDR 3,350 per kilogram at rice mill level,” he said. It hasn’t been this cold for decades — 20 years in Washington, D.C., 18 years in Milwaukee, 15 in Missouri — even in the Midwest, where bundling up is second nature. Weather Bell meteorologist Ryan Maue said, “If you’re under 40 (years old), you’ve not seen this stuff before.” Preceded by snow in much of the Midwest, the frigid air will begin Sunday and extend into early next week, funneled as far south as the Gulf Coast. Blame it on a “polar vortex,” as one meteorologist calls it, a counterclockwise-rotating pool of cold, dense air. “It’s just a large area of very cold air that comes down, forms over the North Pole or polar regions ... usually stays in Canada, but this time it’s going to come all the way into the eastern United States,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Phillip Schumacher in Sioux Falls, S.D. The predictions are startling: 25 below zero in Fargo, N.D., minus 31 in International Falls, Minn., and 15 below in Indianapolis and Chicago. Fresh snowfall is expected Saturday night, ranging from up to a foot in eastern Missouri and southern Michigan, 6 to 8 inches in central Illinois, 8 or more inches in western Kentucky and up to 6 inches in middle Tennessee. The South also will dip into temperatures rarely seen. By Monday morning, western and central Kentucky could be below zero — “definitely record-breaking,” said weather service meteorologist Christine Wielgos in Paducah, Ky.

DHAKA, Bangladesh — Police in Bangladesh fired at protesters and opposition activists torched more than 100 polling stations Sunday during a national election boycotted by the opposition and described as flawed by the international community. At least 11 people were killed in election-related violence. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s refusal to heed opposition demands to step down and appoint a neutral caretaker to oversee the election led to the boycott, undermining the legitimacy of the vote. Opposition activists have staged attacks, strikes and transportation blockades in unrest that has left at least 286 people dead since last year. “We never expected such an election,” said Aminul Islam, a resident of the capital, Dhaka, who refused to vote. “For such a situation, both the government and opposition are responsible. They don’t want to establish democracy.” Police opened fire to stop protesters from seizing a polling center in Bangladesh’s northern Rangpur district, killing two people, authorities said. In a similar incident in neighboring Nilphamari district, police fired into about two dozen protesters, killing two people. Police gave no further details, but Dhaka’s Daily Star newspaper said the four men who were killed belonged to the opposition Jamaat-e-Islami party. Another seven people were killed in election-related violence elsewhere, including a polling official who was stabbed to death by suspected opposition activists, police said. Local media reported that attackers torched at least 127 school buildings across Bangladesh in overnight attacks. The buildings were to be used as polling stations. By midmorning Sunday, voting was suspended at least 149 polling centers because of attacks, the election commission said. The European Union, the United States and the British Commonwealth did not send observers for what they considered a flawed election. Pertamina has hiked the selling price of non-subsidized 12-kg cylinders of liquefied petroleum gas by about 68 percent, effective January 1, 2014. Deputy President of Pertamina’s Communications Affairs Ali Mundakir reported Wednesday that his company had raised the price in an effort to shore up Pertamina’s losses in the 12-kg cylinder gas business, which reached about Rp6 trillion in 2013. “The new price simultaneously became effective across the country on January 1, 2014. The new price of non-subsidized 12-kg cylinder gas translates to an average in-
crease of Rp3,959 per kg for the consumer,” Mundakir added. Pertamina increased the price of 12-kilogram LPG by 68 per cent, or from Rp 70,200 to Rp 117,708 per canister, on Wednesday, the first day of the year. Although Pertamina has set the price, fixed consumer prices in the market vary depending on the proximity between LPG stations and supply points in each area. Pertamina claimed the pricehike policy needed to be taken because the company had suffered annual losses amounting to Rp 6 trillion from the 12-kilogram LPG canister business.

MEDAN - Mount Sinabung located in Karo District, North Sumatra, has erupted 77 times and spitted lava since Saturday, according to a local official. “Since Saturday, until this morning at 6.00 am local time, there have been 77 eruptions,” Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), said in a text message on Sunday. The mountain spewed volcanic materials at a height of between 500 meters and 4,000 meters in the air. The volcano also produced hot cloud that spread up to 4,500 meters toward south and southeast directions. The number of hybrid earthquakes has increased, indicating a process of creating a lava dome of the volcano. The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center has kept on monitoring the volcano’s eruption and reported the development of the volcanic activities to the BNPB, the North Sumatra Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) and the Karo authorities. JAKARTA - Six suspected terrorists killed in a New Year’s Eve police raid near Jakarta had planned to carry out a string of attacks targeting the US embassy, a church and Buddhist temples, police said Friday. Following a nine-hour gun battle with the six men in a house on the outskirts of the Indonesian capital, police seized a hand-written document revealing the group’s targets, national police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar said. “Take your pistols, holy warriors, and prepare to attack the US embassy,” Amar said, reading from the document during a press conference. Suicide attacks were also planned, he said. The document listed “hotels harbouring the CIA” and anti-terror police officers among targets, while National Police Chief Sutarman said the men also planned to attack a church and Buddhist temples to avenge anti-Muslim violence in Buddhist-majority Myanmar. The men are believed to be behind a low-impact bombing on a Buddhist temple last August, which lightly injured one person, police said. Police linked the men to a cell formerly headed by Abu Roban, a suspected militant killed in a raid last year, and Sutarman said the cell was suspected of having links with Al-Qaeda. “One of the men, according to documents (seized), was also planning to go to Syria for jihad. He planned to carry out a suicide bombing there,” said Sutarman, who goes by one name. Indonesia was rocked by several deadly terror attacks in the last decade, including the 2002 bombings on the resort island of Bali that killed 202 people, mostly foreigners. KUALA LUMPUR - Some 51 Indonesians who drifted in rough seas for five days after the engine on their rickety boat failed have been rescued by Malaysian authorities, a report said Sunday. The 34 men, 14 women and three children -- including a twomonth-old girl, are thought to have boarded the fishing boat on December 28 as they tried to sneak out of Malaysia to return to Indonesia’s Sumatra island, The Star reported. But the vessel suffered engine problems and drifted until maritime personnel spotted it on Thursday off northern Perak state, the report added. The immigrants were weak from hunger and shaken by bad weather that rocked the boat, Razak Johan -- an official with the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency -- told the paper. They are now under investigation for trying to illegally leave the country, it said. Razak and other officials could not immediately be reached for comments. Around two million Indonesians and others from poorer regional countries are estimated to work illegally in Malaysian plantation, construction, factory and other jobs. They often use rickety boats to sneak in and out of the Southeast Asian country, and accidents are common. In August, seven Indonesians died, four were rescued and 33 others went missing -- presumed dead -- when their boat sank in rough seas on their way home to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, the end of the Muslim fasting month.

LISBON, Portugal — Eusebio, the Portuguese football star who was born into poverty in Africa but became an international sporting icon and was voted one of the 10 best players of all time, has died of heart failure aged 71, Portuguese media reported. Eusebio died in the early hours of Sunday, Portugal’s national news agency Lusa reported, citing unnamed sources at Benfica, Eusebio’s longtime club. Officals at Benfica and at the Portuguese Football Federation, where Eusebio was an ambassador, could not immediately be reached. Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portugal captain who plays for Real Madrid, commented on his Facebook page, “Always eternal Eusebio, rest in peace.” Eusebio was admitted to hospital several times over the past year for the treatment of heart and respiratory problems. Eusebio da Silva Ferreira became affectionately known as the Black Panther for his athletic prowess and clinical finishing that made him one of the world’s top scorers during his heyday in the 1960s for Benfica and the Portuguese national team. Perhaps his biggest accomplishment was to lead Portugal to a third-place finish at the 1966 World Cup, but his agility and speed made him one of Europe’s most dangerous forwards for most of a career that lasted two decades. He was awarded the Ballon d’Or in 1965 as Europe’s player of the year and twice won the Golden Boot — in 1968 and 1973 — for being top scorer in Europe. According to football’s world governing body FIFA, he scored 679 goals in a total of 678 official games. None are more famous than those he netted against North Korea in the quarterfinals of the 1966 World Cup. With Portugal trailing 3-0, Eusebio inspired his team’s turnaround with four goals and an eventual 5-3 victory. While Portugal went on to lose to host and eventual champion England in the semifinals, Eusebio became even more popular at home when he wept openly as he left the field following the defeat. He finished as the tournament’s top scorer with nine goals. In 1998, a panel of 100 experts gathered by FIFA named him in its International Football Hall of Fame as one of the sport’s top 10 all-time greats. “Look, there are only two black people on the list: me and Pele,” Eusebio commented on the honor, referring to the Brazilian great who was a friend. “I regard that as a great responsibility because I am representing Africa and Portugal, my second homeland.” Eusebio was born in Maputo, the Mozambican capital, during the Second World War when the southeast African country was still a Portuguese colony. He came from a poor family but sparkled for his local team and was lured by Benfica to Portugal when he was 18. LISBON, Portugal — Eusebio, the Portuguese football star who was born into poverty in Africa but became an international sporting icon and was voted one of the 10 best players of all time, has died of heart failure aged 71, Portuguese media reported. Eusebio died in the early hours of Sunday, Portugal’s national news agency Lusa reported, citing unnamed sources at Benfica, Eusebio’s longtime club. Officals at Benfica and at the Portuguese Football Federation, where Eusebio was an ambassador, could not immediately be reached. Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portugal captain who plays for Real Madrid, commented on his Facebook page, “Always eternal Eusebio, rest in peace.” Eusebio was admitted to hospital several times over the past year for the treatment of heart and respiratory problems. Eusebio da Silva Ferreira became affectionately known as the Black Panther for his athletic prowess and clinical finishing that made him one of the world’s top scorers during his heyday in the 1960s for Benfica and the Portuguese national team. Perhaps his biggest accomplishment was to lead Portugal to a third-place finish at the 1966 World Cup, but his agility and speed made him one of Europe’s most dangerous forwards for most of a career that lasted two decades. He was awarded the Ballon d’Or in 1965 as Europe’s player of the year and twice won the Golden Boot — in 1968 and 1973 — for being top scorer in Europe. According to football’s world governing body FIFA, he scored 679 goals in a total of 678 official games. None are more famous than those he netted against North Korea in the quarterfinals of the 1966 World Cup. With Portugal trailing 3-0, Eusebio inspired his team’s turnaround with four goals and an eventual 5-3 victory. While Portugal went on to lose to host and eventual champion England in the semifinals, Eusebio became even more popular at home when he wept openly as he left the field following the defeat. He finished as the tournament’s top scorer with nine goals. In 1998, a panel of 100 experts gathered by FIFA named him in its International Football Hall of Fame as one of the sport’s top 10 all-time greats. “Look, there are only two black people on the list: me and Pele,” Eusebio commented on the honor, referring to the Brazilian great who was a friend. “I regard that as a great responsibility because I am representing Africa and Portugal, my second homeland.” Eusebio was born in Maputo, the Mozambican capital, during the Second World War when the southeast African country was still a Portuguese colony. He came from a poor family but sparkled for his local team and was lured by Benfica to Portugal when he was 18. SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The deep freeze expected soon in the Midwest, New England and even the South will be one to remember, with potential record-low temperatures heightening fears of frostbite and hypothermia. It hasn’t been this cold for decades — 20 years in Washington, D.C., 18 years in Milwaukee, 15 in Missouri — even in the Midwest, where bundling up is second nature. Weather Bell meteorologist Ryan Maue said, “If you’re under 40 (years old), you’ve not seen this stuff before.” Preceded by snow in much of the Midwest, the frigid air will begin Sunday and extend into early next week, funneled as far south as the Gulf Coast. Blame it on a “polar vortex,” as one meteorologist calls it, a counterclockwise-rotating pool of cold, dense air. “It’s just a large area of very cold air that comes down, forms over the North Pole or polar regions ... usually stays in Canada, but this time it’s going to come all the way into the eastern United States,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Phillip Schumacher in Sioux Falls, S.D. The predictions are startling: 25 below zero in Fargo, N.D., minus 31 in International Falls, Minn., and 15 below in Indianapolis and Chicago. At those temperatures, exposed skin can get frostbitten in minutes and hypothermia can quickly set in as wind chills may reach 50, 60 or even 70 below zero. Even wind chills of 25 below zero can do serious damage, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Scott Truett in St. Louis. “A person not properly dressed could
die easily in those conditions,” he said of the expected wind chill in Missouri at daybreak Monday. Already, parts of New England dropped into the negatives Saturday, with East Brighton, Vt., seeing 30 below zero just after midnight and Allagash, Maine, hitting minus 36. The cold will sweep through other parts of New England where residents are digging out from a snowstorm. Snow will reduce the sun’s heating effect, so nighttime lows will plummet because of the strong northwest winds, Maue said. Fresh snowfall is expected Saturday night, ranging from up to a foot in eastern Missouri and southern Michigan, 6 to 8 inches in central Illinois, 8 or more inches in western Kentucky and up to 6 inches in middle Tennessee. The South also will dip into temperatures rarely seen. By Monday morning, western and central Kentucky could be below zero — “definitely record-breaking,” said weather service meteorologist Christine Wielgos in Paducah, Ky.
And in Atlanta, Tuesday’s high is expected to hover in the mid20s. The arctic chill will affect everything from sports to schools to flights. Mike Duell, with flighttracking website FlightAware. com, says to expect airport delays and flight cancellations because of the cold temperatures. “For some of them, they run into limitations on the aircraft. They’re only certified to take off at temperatures so low so if they get into a particular cold front it can prevent them from being able to legally take off,” he said. “In a lot of cases, it’s just ice.” Sunday’s NFL playoff game in Green Bay could be among one of the coldest ever played — a frigid minus 2 degrees when the Packers and San Francisco 49ers kickoff at Lambeau Field. Medical experts suggest fans wear at least three layers and drink warm fluids — not alcohol. Minnesota has called off school Monday for the entire state — the first such closing in 17 years — as well as the Wisconsin cities of Milwaukee and Madison.
DHAKA, Bangladesh — Police in Bangladesh fired at protesters and opposition activists torched more than 100 polling stations Sunday during a national election boycotted by the opposition and described as flawed by the international community. At least 11 people were killed in election-related violence. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s refusal to heed opposition demands to step down and appoint a neutral caretaker to oversee the election led to the boycott, undermining the legitimacy of the vote. Opposition activists have staged attacks, strikes and transportation blockades in unrest that has left at least 286 people dead since last year. “We never expected such an election,” said Aminul Islam, a resident of the capital, Dhaka, who refused to vote. “For such a situation, both the government and opposition are responsible. They don’t want to establish democracy.” Police opened fire to stop protesters from seizing a polling center in Bangladesh’s northern Rangpur district, killing two people, authorities said. In a similar incident in neighboring Nilphamari district, police fired into about two dozen protesters, killing two people. Police gave no further details, but Dhaka’s Daily Star newspaper said the four men who were killed belonged to the opposition Jamaat-e-Islami party. Another seven people were killed in election-related violence elsewhere, including a polling official who was stabbed to death by suspected opposition activists, police said. Local media reported that attackers torched at least 127 school buildings across Bangladesh in overnight attacks. The buildings were to be used as polling stations. By midmorning Sunday, voting was suspended at least 149 polling centers because of attacks, the election commission said. The opposition boycott led to 153 of Parliament’s 300 elected seats going uncontested. The European Union, the United States and the British Commonwealth did not send observers for what they considered a flawed election. U.S. State Department deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf said that Washington was disappointed that the major political parties had not reached a consensus on a way to hold free, fair and credible elections. Pertamina has hiked the selling price of non-subsidized 12-kg cylinders of liquefied petroleum gas by about 68 percent, effective January 1, 2014. Deputy President of Pertamina’s Communications Affairs Ali Mundakir reported Wednesday that his company had raised the price in an effort to shore up Pertamina’s losses in the 12-kg cylinder gas business, which reached about Rp6 trillion in 2013. “The new price simultaneously became effective across the country on January 1, 2014. The new price of non-subsidized 12-kg cylinder gas translates to an average in-
crease of Rp3,959 per kg for the consumer,” Mundakir added. Pertamina increased the price of 12-kilogram LPG by 68 per cent, or from Rp 70,200 to Rp 117,708 per canister, on Wednesday, the first day of the year. Although Pertamina has set the price, fixed consumer prices in the market vary depending on the proximity between LPG stations and supply points in each area. Pertamina claimed the pricehike policy needed to be taken because the company had suffered annual losses amounting to Rp 6 trillion from the 12-kilogram LPG canister business.

The mountain spewed volcanic materials at a height of between 500 meters and 4,000 meters in the air. The volcano also produced hot cloud that spread up to 4,500 meters toward south and southeast directions. The number of hybrid earthquakes has increased, indicating a process of creating a lava dome of the volcano. JAKARTA - Six suspected terrorists killed in a New Year’s Eve police raid near Jakarta had planned to carry out a string of attacks targeting the US embassy, a church and Buddhist temples, police said Friday. Following a nine-hour gun battle with the six men in a house on the outskirts of the Indonesian capital, police seized a hand-written document revealing the group’s targets, national police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar said. “Take your pistols, holy warriors, and prepare to attack the US embassy,” Amar said, reading from the document during a press conference. Suicide attacks were also planned, he said. The document listed “hotels harbouring the CIA” and anti-terror police officers among targets, while National Police Chief Sutarman said the men also planned to attack a church and Buddhist temples to avenge anti-Muslim violence in Buddhist-majority Myanmar. The men are believed to be behind a low-impact bombing on a Buddhist temple last August, which lightly injured one person, police said. Police linked the men to a cell formerly headed by Abu Roban, a suspected militant killed in a raid last year, and Sutarman said the cell was suspected of having links with Al-Qaeda. “One of the men, according to documents (seized), was also planning to go to Syria for jihad. He planned to carry out a suicide bombing there,” said Sutarman, who goes by one name. KUALA LUMPUR - Some 51 Indonesians who drifted in rough seas for five days after the engine on their rickety boat failed have been rescued by Malaysian authorities, a report said Sunday. The 34 men, 14 women and three children -- including a twomonth-old girl, are thought to have boarded the fishing boat on December 28 as they tried to sneak out of Malaysia to return to Indonesia’s Sumatra island, The Star reported. But the vessel suffered engine problems and drifted until maritime personnel spotted it on Thursday off northern Perak state, the report added. The immigrants were weak from hunger and shaken by bad weather that rocked the boat, Razak Johan -- an official with the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency -- told the paper. They are now under investigation for trying to illegally leave the country, it said. Razak and other officials could not immediately be reached for comments. Around two million Indonesians and others from poorer regional countries are estimated to work illegally in Malaysian plantation, construction, factory and other jobs. They often use rickety boats to sneak in and out of the Southeast Asian country, and accidents are common. In August, seven Indonesians died, four were rescued and 33 others went missing -- presumed dead -- when their boat sank in rough seas on their way home to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, the end of the Muslim fasting month.

FRANKFURT - The European Central Bank looks set to ring in the New Year with interest rates on hold, but will have its work cut out for it in 2014, analysts say. The ECB’s policy-setting governing council is scheduled to hold its first meeting of this year on Thursday, but central bank watchers are not projecting any new measures just yet after a surprise rate cut in November. “The ECB’s governing council appears unlikely to make any substantive policy changes at its first policy meeting of the year,” said Jonathan Loynes at Capital Economics. “But the ongoing combination
of weak economic growth, a damagingly strong currency and poor liquidity conditions will maintain the pressure on the central bank to take further action to support the region’s fragile economic recovery in 2014,” he said. The ECB took markets by surprise in November and pared back its central “refi” refinancing rate by a quarter of a percentage point to a record low of 0.25 percent. The reason behind the move was an expectation that the single
currency area is facing a prolonged period of very low inflation. Area-wide inflation picked up fractionally in November, but analysts believe that does not sound the all-clear and the ECB may have to take further action again at some point. There is “no immediate need to act,” said Commerzbank economist Michael Schubert. “ECB council members signalled in recent weeks that they currently see no need for further measures,” the expert said. “Against this backdrop we expect that at ECB President Mario Draghi will merely emphasise once again that the ECB is ready to act,” Schubert suggested.
In addition to changing interest rates, the ECB could pump more liquidity into the financial system to get credit flowing again between banks and businesses, crucial if any economic upturn is to be sustained. For the moment, loans to businesses in the euro area are continuing to decline, new ECB data showed on Friday. Private sector loans dropped by 2.3 percent in November in a yearon-year comparison, after already contracting by 2.2 percent in October, the ECB calculated. The ECB already pumped more than 1.0 trillion euros ($1.3 trillion) into the banking system at the end of 2011 and the beginning of 2012 to avert a potentially disastrous
credit crunch. But the banks preferred to use the ultra-cheap cash to buy up sovereign bonds rather than lend it on to businesses and the ECB is considering ways of channelling the cash directly to businesses if it decides to open the liquidity gates once again. Berenberg Bank’s Schmieding said the weak credit data did suggest a possible credit crunch. However, “companies are -- on aggregate -- in such a comfortable financial position that they can reduce their bank loans and increase their cash reserves at the same time. On aggregate, companies do not need credit at the moment,” Schmieding suggested.

job prospects. Bernanke said that an important factor holding back the economy was “disappointing” productivity growth. He said the Fed’s decision in mid-December to modestly taper its $85 billion a month assetpurchase program did not indicate any lesser commitment to maintain an easy-money policy “for as long as needed.” Instead, the taper “reflected the progress we have made toward our goal of substantial improvement in the labor market outlook that we set out when we began the current purchase program in September 2012.” The Fed intends to keep its key interest rate near zero “well past” the time that the unemployment threshold of 6.5 percent is crossed, he said, particularly if inflation continues to run below 2.0 percent. Bernanke emphasized his efforts to make the central bank more transparent, saying it had been one of his initial goals when he took the post in February 2006, just as the housing price bubble collapsed and triggered the financial crisis.

DENPASAR - The Association of Indonesia Tours and Travel Agencies (ASITA) of Bali Chapter is optimistic that tourism growth in 2014 will be positive compared to the previous year even though the global economy shows a slowing growth. “In 2014, we remain optimistic there will be an increase in the number of foreign and domestic tourist arrival to Bali. As tourism actors, I hope there will be an attempt to make it happen,” said Chairman of the ASITA Bali, Ketut Ardana, in Denpasar, recently. He said that such an increase was remarkably needed because the current number of hotel rooms in Bali had exceeded the capacity. As a consequence, it had an impact on the daily occupancy rate of hotels in Bali. “Daily hotel occupancy in Bali only reaches 60 percent. This figure remains small compared to the number of tourists visiting Bali in 2013 that increased by 13 percent,” he said. According to him, the number of hotel rooms was larger than the number of tourist arrivals, so the tariff war between the employers was inevitable. Although the government targeted tourist arrivals to Bali amounted to 3.1 million foreign tourists and 6 million domestic tourists, or diminished when compared to the realization in 2013 reaching 3.27 million foreign tourists and 6.5 million domestic tourists. “Nevertheless, we continue to set a target of the increase in tourist arrivals,” he said. Ketut Ardana said that his party set a target of 5 percent of the actual number of tourist arrival in 2013. “Yes, at least there is an increase, perhaps around 3.3 million tourists. It was partly caused by high cost of transportation from rice fields to the mill. “In Klungkung, for instance, the transportation cost of grain reached IDR 800 per kilogram as the rice field is located away from road, so farmers have to pay transportation cost from rice field to road nearby and from the road to rice mill,” he explained. Meanwhile, the highest price of harvest dry grain at farmer level occurred in Buleleng County at IDR 4,300 for Serang variety, while the lowest price occurred in Klungkung County at IDR 3,300 per kilogram for Ciherang variety. “Although selling grain of low quality, the average price of GKP quality grain in December 2013 was above the basic selling price (HPP), namely at IDR 3,300 per kilogram at farmer level and IDR 3,350 per kilogram at rice mill level,” he said. Dozens of houses in Kuta submerged in floods

MANGUPURA - The rain flushing for a few days lately had caused floods in Kuta area. On Thursday (Jan 2), dozens of homes in the vicinity of Jalan Nakula to Sunset Road and Legian to Seminyak flooded. The water height was estimated to reach 70 centimeters. Maximum water height inundating the residential areas and local villas happened in the morning. The most severe location was on Jalan Nakula leading to Sunset Road, Legian village. Such condition caused a number of residents whose home was most seriously hit by floods, including guests staying at villas, had to be evacuated by inflatable boat. The water began to recede during the day, with a height of about adult knee. In addition to the area of Legian village, some road sections at Seminyak also flooded. The most severe area was around Gang Baik-Baik. According to the Emergency and Logistics Division Head of the Badung Regional Mitigation Agency (BPBD), I Putu Ngurah Thomas Yuniarta, the cause of floods was the overflowing stream of Mati River. HAVANA — Talk about sticker shock! Cubans are eagerly flocking to Havana car dealerships as a new law takes effect eliminating a special permit requirement that has greatly restricted vehicle ownership in the country. To their dismay on Friday, the first day the law was in force, they found sharply hiked prices, some of them light years beyond all but the most well-heeled islanders. A new Kia Rio hatchback that starts at $13,600 in the United States sells for $42,000 here, while a fresh-off-the-lot Peugeot 508 family car, the most luxurious of which lists for the equivalent of about $53,000 in the U.K., will set you back a cool $262,000. “Between all my family here in Cuba and over in Miami, we couldn’t come up with that kind of money,” said Gilbert Losada, a 28-year-old musical director. “We’re going to wait and see if they lower the prices, which are really crazy. We’re really disappointed.” Cuba’s Communist-run government traditionally has placed huge markups on retail goods and services paid for with hard currency, a policy that amounts to a tax on people who can afford such goods. The practice applies to everything from dried pasta, to household appliances, to Internet access. The astronomical sticker prices on the cars will likely mean fewer sales and the state leaving money on the table, noted Philip Peters, a longtime Cuba analyst and president of the Virginia-based Cuba Research Center. “There’s a lot more money to be
made at lower price points,” Peters said. “It’s a short-sighted tax-man’s mentality. ... Paradoxically, they mark it up so much that they’re not going to make any money. But that’s the mentality.” Havana legalized the sale of used cars by private individuals in 2011. But longstanding rules remained in place requiring Cubans to obtain a Transportation Ministry permit to purchase a new or used car from state-run dealerships. Permission took months or years to obtain, resulting in a black market in which car buyers would often quickly flip them for a big profit. The new law eliminates the need for a permit, but does not allow Cubans to import automobiles directly. The government retains its monopoly on that, and alone decides a vehicle’s market value. Some exceptions will still exist allowing diplomatic missions and foreign entities to import vehicles. The Ferrari-like price schedules for even mundane new cars are a signal that automotive scarcity and high demand will likely continue to reign in Cuba, which is
famous for the 1950s American cars that still rumble through the streets long after they became museum pieces elsewhere. Because replacing a car is so difficult, those lucky enough to own a finned Detroit classic or a boxy Russian import go to great lengths to keep them on the road as long as possible, swapping in makeshift parts and resorting to creative soldering. At a used car dealership in western Havana on Friday, there were a few relatively affordable options. A 1997 BMW was the cheapest vehicle and the first to sell shortly after the dealership opened at 8 a.m. It went for $14,457 to a young man who declined to talk to reporters, so it wasn’t known many miles it had previously logged. But even many of the used cars had eye-popping asking prices, such as a 2009 Hyundai minivan that listed for $110,000. “Let’s see if a revolutionary worker who lives honorably on his salary can come and buy a car at these prices,” said Guillermo Flores, a 27-year-old computer engineer. “This is a joke on the people.”
MIAMI — Model yachts, rustic fishing boats and wooden rafts dangle above visitors as they step into the new Perez Art Museum Miami. The colorful display is both a playful nod to South Florida’s maritime culture and a somber reference to the perilous journeys many make to get here. It is the perfect entry to a museum that channels the city around it: whimsical, vibrant, brimming with culture from across the Americas - and yes, a work in progress. The museum, which opened in December, still lacks a permanent blockbuster, but its retrospective of Chinese master and political dissident Ai Weiwei, on display through mid-March, should temporarily satisfy. And the museum’s eclectic and provocative collection, coupled with its bay front location, has quickly turned the PAMM - as locals already call it - into a must-see destination for tourists and natives. “Our biggest competition down here isn’t the other cultural institutions. It’s the beach, the water,” Museum director Thom Collins said. “So, rather than compete, the museum embraces its surroundings.” As in the rest of Miami’s booming downtown, visitors to the Perez Museum are immediately greeted by construction along the museum’s front plaza and at the site of a neighboring science museum, set to open in 2015. Once under the PAMM’s shaded deck, though, Ai Weiwei’s mammoth bronze animal Zodiac Heads welcome guests, and the call of gulls and ocean breezes take over. The Pritzker Prize-winning Swiss architect firm Herzog & de Meuron took pains to design an airy and hurricane resistant building, with a wide, shaded deck that can serve as the rare outdoor communal space in a city with scorching temperatures and no central park. Beneath the deck’s three-story slatted roof, shrubbery-covered columns hang like an abstract enchanted forest, pumping recaptured rainwater through hidden pipes to further cool the deck. Inside, strategically placed windows offer views of the beaches and downtown skyline and provide natural light, while an open floor plan ensures future exhibits can be shaped around new acquisitions. No space is wasted: the museum’s center staircase doubles as a theater that can be divided into two auditoriums. Ai’s retrospective, which includes symbolic crab piles, buckets of pearls, a maze of hundreds of bicycle wheels and an exploration of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, will be followed by a retrospective of Caribbean art and an exhibit by Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes, whose psychedelic color bursts have earned her fame throughout Latin America and Europe. Collins says that contemporary Latin American artists like Milhazes are sometimes overlooked by major U.S. museums. “Her work is so baroque and sexual, and often in the U.S. we are somewhat puritanical,” he said, “but it will be well received here.”

Foreign tourist visits surpass target Antara
DENPASAR - A total of 2.97 million foreign tourists visited the Indonesian island resort of Bali between January and November 2013, thus surpassing the target of 2.8 million, according to local bureau of statistics spokesman Amirudin. “In December alone around 300 thousand foreign tourists were recorded to have visited
the paradise island, making the number surpass the total target of 2.8 million in 2013,” Amirudin
stated here on Friday. According to him, the number of foreign tourists visiting Bali
during 11 months from January to November 2013 rose sharply to 11.50 percent from 2.67 million during the same period in the previous year. “Only around 30,657 foreign tourists visited Bali by cruise ship, while most arrived by flight

directly from their respective countries to Ngurah Rai airport,” Amirudin noted. He added that the number of tourists from Australia was still the highest, compared to that from other ASEAN, American, and European countries.

As consequence, it can be ascertained that we are unable to be a host in our own country,” he said.
According to him, although Indonesia had secured the domestic market through a number of instruments, such as through the regulation on the port of entry, implementation of the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) and labeling rules in Indonesian, the fact the import products remained to flood the domestic market. “It proves that the security efforts of domestic products have not been maximized,” he said. DENPASAR - The price hike of 12-kg LPG cylinder to IDR 122,400 per January 1, 2014 was assessed to strangle small people because the increase determined by PT Pertamina was beyond the bounds of reasonableness. “Now, the increase in the price of the 12-kg LPG to over IDR 122,000 highly strangles small people. Previously, the price of the 12-kg LPG was only IDR 76,000,” said a LPG retailer, Nengah Nasih, in Denpasar. She said the increase was feared to make people switch to buy the 3-kg LPG remaining to be subsidized by the government. “The price of 3-kg LPG has also been increased to IDR 16,500 from IDR 14,000. Moreover, it is only in the level of distributor, not the retail price,” she said. The price hike of LPG following the fuel was also felt by small and home-based industries. Before their suffering got recovered due to government policies of raising the fuel price, another burden had come. Wayan Wenten, for instance, a cracker maker, also said that he could not say much to address the policy of Pertamina. “Obviously, it makes us more difficult,” he complained. It was indeed not easy to deal with the operational cost increase when the people’s purchasing power weakened. Therefore, the complaints
revealed by the LPG users were not without reason. “At least, there should be a pause after the government decided to announce the price hike of fuel. The price hike of LPG was made too quickly,” he said. Director of Consumer Protection Foundation (YLPK) of Bali, Putu Armaya, admitted the increase in the price of the 12-kg LPG harmed the consumers in Indonesia, including Bali. “To reduce losses, Pertamina should not burden consumers. The increase will lead to higher price disparities between the 12-kg and 3-kg cylinder,” he said. Such condition, assessed Putu Armaya, would trigger a massive migration of the LPG use from the 12-kg to 3-kg cylinder. It happened because the difference in the price offered was very high. “It means the right of the lower middle class people will be ‘robbed’ by the upper middle class. Though the price of 3-kg LPG cylinder also increased, it still indicated the wide range of price disparity,” he said. According to Putu Armaya, this issue potentially triggered a fraud and smuggling. As reported previously, PT Pertamina (Persero) raised the price of the 12-kg LPG to IDR 122.400 per January 1, 2014. BULELENG - Dozens of small to jumbo size billboards mounted at a number of strategic locations in the city of Singaraja were dismantled by force by the officers of the Buleleng Municipal Police, Thursday (Jan 2). In addition, hundreds of posters or banners installed on shade trees were also dismantled in the discipline operation. The dismantled billboards were known to have no permit of installation or the installation permit had expired. Dismantle of the large-size billboards, among others, were carried out on Jalan Ahmad Yani and in front of the Banjar Bali village office. Aside from having expired, the billboards were also assessed to protrude to the middle of the road. Chief of Buleleng Municipal Police, Putu Hartana, explained the disciplining action against the billboards was carried out on the request of the Office of Integrated Services (KPT) of Buleleng. “Since many unlicensed billboards were found lately, we then asked for help of the KPT to discipline the billboards
that do not have permission,” he said. Meanwhile, the Regent of Buleleng, Putu Agus Suradnyana, said his party was indeed necessary to make arrangement against the advertisement posted at strategic locations in Buleleng. All this time, the tax of advertisement received by local government was not comparable to the reality in the field. In addition, his party wanted to organize the appearance of the town so that no more billboards were installed at the locations that could endanger the public. “Contribution of the advertisement is very small. To that end, we are planning to arrange them in order the look of the town will not be damaged,” he said. Furthermore, said the regent, the county government would make a special zone for the installation of billboards. Each zone would have different tax rates depending on the degree of strategic zone. “We ask the KPT to make a comparative study to Denpasar city in order to explore and learn about the advertising management in terms of tax rates and placement zoning,” he said. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

“I was listening to one of my favorite songs that Phil wrote and had an extreme emotional moment just before I got the news of his passing,” Don Everly wrote in a statement to The Associated Press on Saturday morning. “I took that as a special spiritual message from Phil saying goodbye. Our love was and will always be deeper than any earthly differences we might have had.” Phil Everly died Friday in California from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He was 74. Steven Seagal says he may run for Ariz. governor Associated Press Writer PHOENIX — Action-movie star Steven Seagal says he is considering a run for Arizona governor. The “Marked for Death” actor told KNXV-TV that he is considering a shot at the state’s highest office and has had a talk about the bid with the selfproclaimed toughest sheriff in America. The 61-year-old made the comments while talking about his newly released reality series “Steven Seagal - Lawman: Maricopa County.” Seagal teamed up with Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio for the show that was shot in Arizona and airs on cable TV’s Reelz Channel. The martial arts expert is a member of Arpaio’s posse, made up of 3,000 unpaid civilians. He also has been deputized with sheriff’s offices in New Mexico, Texas and Louisiana and says he wants to increase border security.
