Recently, the prices of cement from various brands continued to soar and it was followed by the scarcity of building materials. Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long ﬂags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

A boy convicted of stealing old sandals Associated Press

PALU — An Indonesian court found a boy guilty on Wednesday of stealing a pair of worn-out sandals but allowed him to go free in a case that captured headlines and focused attention on the country’s uneven judicial system. Hundreds of people who packed the court building in Central Sulawesi’s capital screamed with dissatisfaction as the judge read the verdict. Most of the onlookers had brought pairs of used sandals and piled them outside the courtroom to express their frustration over the legal system. Some rallied outside the building ahead of the hearing to demand the 15-year-old boy’s acquittal. The boy, who cannot be named because of his age, could have received ﬁve years in prison — the same sentence given to many terrorists, drug pushers and rapists. “Based on facts and testimony during the trial, the defendant was proven to have violated the law by committing theft,” Judge Rommel Tampubolon said. He ordered that the boy be returned to his parents for counseling. The boy was accused of taking the sandals in November 2010 near a boarding house used by police. Six months later he was interrogated and badly beaten by three police ofﬁcers who accused him of theft. One officer, Sgt. Ahmad Rusdi Harahap, claimed the sandals were his and took the teenager to criminal court.

The boy was not detained. When shown the sandals at the trial, however, Harahap said they were the wrong brand and size. Judge Tampubolon ruled the boy was guilty of theft, even though the sandals did not belong to the policeman. “We are really disappointed,” said Sofyan Farid Lembah of the local office of the National Commission for Child Protection. “We will ask the Judicial Commission to probe the judge.” Lembah earlier organized the first collection of sandals which were presented to police as a symbol of protest over the case. Thousands later joined in the sandal donation protest in Palu, Jakarta and many other cities. Two of the boy’s friends testified in the trial that he was beaten up by the officer with a peace of wood. They said he was also kicked, causing him to fall into a steep trench. Indonesia has made tremendous strides toward democracy since the ouster of longtime dictator Suharto in 1998, but the judicial system remains a weak point.

FRESNO, Calif. — Northern California scientists say they have found a possible explanation for a honey bee die-off that has decimated hives around the world: A parasitic ﬂy that hijacks the bees’ bodies and causes them to abandon hives. Scientists say the ﬂy deposits its eggs into the bee’s abdomen, causing the infected bee to exhibit zombie-like behavior by walking around in circles with no apparent sense of direction. The bee leaves the hive at night and dies shortly thereafter. The symptoms mirror colony collapse disorder, in which all the adult honey bees in a colony suddenly disappear. The disease is of great concern, because bees pollinate about a third of the United States’ food supply. Its presence is especially alarming in California, the nation’s top producer of fruits and vegetables, where bees play an essential role in the $2 billion almond industry and other crops. The latest study, published Tuesday in the science journal PLoS

Researchers haven’t been able to pin down an exact cause of colony collapse or find a way to prevent it. ATLANTA — Console gaming occasionally gets a boost from add-ons that can make the standard controller more efﬁcient to hold and operate. A new wireless mouse looks to replace the standard Xbox 360 controller altogether in hopes of giving fans of ﬁrst-person shooters added precision and control. The FragFX Shark 360 ($89.99 from SplitFish AG) gives a new feel to popular shooter games such as “Call of Duty,” ‘’Halo” and “Gears of War.” It features the familiar colored A-B-X-Y control buttons akin to those on the Xbox controller. What’s new is a start/pause button just under the scroll wheel to freeze the action when needed. The package also comes with a USB device that plugs into the Xbox and communicates wirelessly with the controller mouse. Finally, there’s an analog controller stick, dubbed a FragChuck, that is held in the nonmousing hand. The FragChuck has three triggers, various buttons and a thumbstick to walk or run the player’s character through the game,

while the mouse handles the aiming, shooting and other tasks. The FragChuck also sports an up-down-leftright directional pad that can quickly toggle the player through an array of weapons in shooter games. The directional pad can be programmed to handle other tasks as well by adjusting the settings from in-game options menus. This rethinking of the controller changes the gaming experience much more than the add-ons I’ve tried, such as small extenders for the thumbsticks that give gamers a new feel and range of motion. One thing to note is that the configuration is not completely wireless. I discovered that when I tried the Shark 360 out for the first time. The USB device that I plugged into the front of my Xbox 360 had to be connected to a standard wired Xbox 360 controller as well. The Shark 360 won’t function without that. I had to dig through more than a dozen boxes in my attic to find one because wireless controllers have been the norm for some time now. CHILECITO, Argentina — Nine-time champion Stephane Peterhansel moved into first place in the Dakar Rally with a commanding victory in Wednesday’s fourth stage. The Frenchman, racing in a Mini, won the 326-kilometer (202-mile) special stage from San Juan to Chilecito in northwestern Argentina, a tricky drive featuring dried riverbeds, by more than five minutes.The pre-race favorite, Peterhansel rose from fifth, and nearly three minutes behind, to first, and 5:41 up on the field. “We just stayed out of trouble to avoid getting lost or having flat tires,” Peterhansel said. He has won six times on motorbikes, and three in cars, and the stage win was his 58th.In motorbikes, defending champion Marc Coma of Spain won to cut 2:02 off the overall lead of his KTM teammate Cyril Despres of France. Peterhansel benefited from the bad

luck of defending champ Nasser AlAttiyah, who led through the ﬁrst two checkpoints and less than 40 kilometers from the end until his Hummer got stuck in mud. It took the Qatari 13 minutes to get himself out and he ended up 30 minutes behind the overall leader. “The race is not over yet and we will try to do our best over the next 10 days,” Al-Attiyah said. “I am starting to get the feel of my car.” Teammate Robby Gordon of the U.S., who started the day second overall, suffered a series of ﬂat tires, slipping him to 16:23 behind Peterhansel. Orlando Terranova of Argentina was second in the stage in a Toyota, followed by Giniel De Villiers of South Africa,

also in a Toyota. De Villiers moved to second overall, with Mini driver Joan Roma of Spain third. Coma’s fast pace netted him the stage win, and reduced Despres’ overall lead to 8:10 in the two-man race for the title. “I focused on navigation to aovid making any mistakes,” Despres said. “I am quite happy to only lose two minutes.” Their nearest rival, Helder Rodrigues of Portugal in third, was 26:48 back. Organizers did not report any major accidents on the fourth stage. Three people have died over the first few days of the rally, considered one of the most dangerous events in motor sports. Argentine bike rider Jorge Martinez Boero died in a crash in Sunday’s first stage. On the same day, the pilot of an ultralight plane and his son died when the aircraft went down while following the race.The race begins in Argentina, passes through Chile, and finishes on Jan. 15 in Peru’s capital Lima.

AT&T ends title sponsorship of Williams F1 team Associated Press Writer

LONDON —Williams is searching for a new title sponsor after communications company AT&T’s deal with the Formula One team ended. Dallas-based AT&T, which runs the secondlargest wireless network in the United States, was Williams’ main sponsor for ﬁve years until the contract ended last month. Williams says “both parties decided not to renew for 2012.” The British team has won 113 Grand Prix races, nine constructors’ championships and seven drivers’ titles. But its last victory was at the 2004 Brazilian Grand Prix, and it hasn’t won a drivers’ or constructors’ title since Jacques Villeneuve won the championship in 1997.
