Billy Bush: It was Trump’s voice on “Access Hollywood” tape WASHINGTON - Former NBC television host Billy Bush accused U.S. President Donald Trump of “indulging in some revisionist history” for reportedly telling allies it was not his voice making lewd remarks as the men waited to film a segment for “Access Hollywood” in 2005. “He said it. ‘Grab ’em by the pussy,’” Bush wrote in an editorial published in the New York Times on Sunday. The New York Times reported last month that Trump has been privately telling aides and allies, including at least one U.S. senator, that the voice on the recording was not his. That would be a reversal from his immediate acknowledgement of responsibility after the tape surfaced weeks ahead of the 2016 presidential election. Trump said: “I said it, I was wrong, and I apologize.” Reuters has not been able to verify the Times report that he has been privately telling allies a different story. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Bush’s remarks. But White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders played down the Times report at a White House briefing on Nov. 27. “ T h e P r e s i dent hasn’t changed his position. I think if anything that the president questions, it’s the media’s reporting on that accuracy,” Sanders said. Bush laughed on the video as Trump spoke and he lost his job as a host of NBC’s flagship morning “Today” show after the tape was leaked to the media in October, upending Trump’s campaign to become president. ‘Coco’ Repeats as Box Office Winner With $26.1 Million
LOS ANGELES - Disney-Pixar’s animated comedy “Coco” easily repeated as the winner of the North American box office with a solid $26.1 million at 3,987 locations during a moderate weekend. The third weekend of Warner Bros.-DC Entertainment’s “Justice League” finished second with $16.7 million at 3,820 sites, with the superhero tentpole dropping 60%. Lionsgate’s “Wonder” continued to perform well with $12.5 million at 3,449 venues to come in third followed by Disney-Marvel’s fifth frame of “Thor: Ragnarok” with $9.7 million at 3,148 sites, the fourth weekend of Paramount’s “Daddy’s Home 2” with $7 million at 3,403 venues and Fox’s fourth weekend of “Murder on the Orient Express” with $6.7 million at 3,201 screens. Scientists listen for clues about Bali volcano’s next big eruption
This week, the Mount Agung volcano on the island of Bali in Indonesia erupted for the first time in more than 50 years. Residents are fleeing to neighbouring islands, tourists are scrambling to find flights home and the tiny island is on edge. Volcanologists are trying to gather as much data as possible to help planners, residents and first responders best prepare for any possible further eruptions. Volcanoes erupt because of a change in pressure in the magma near the Earth’s crust. The magma is molten rock that forms deep under the Earth’s surface, about 30 to 50 kilometres down, where the crust meets the Earth’s mantle. It is under extreme pressure and temperature so the rocks can melt. That pressure needs to be relieved at routine intervals and takes the path of least resistance – that path is through fissures between the tectonic plates of the Earth’s crust. Canadian volcanologist Julie Roberge from the Instituto Technica Nationale in Mexico City
explains it this way: “So an analogy for this is a bottle of soda. So, you know, if you leave it on the table, it has a fixed pressure and there’s gas dissolved in your Coke, Sprite or whatever. But when you move the bottle, what happens is that these bubbles are coming out and they want to come out of the bottle. A volcano is the exact same thing. So what happened to your bottle of soda, if you leave the cap on, versus if you take the cap off, is the difference between an eruption where the lava will just flow... versus it will explode like Agung.” So what drives the lava upwards
and out of the cone of the volcano is gas pressure that needs to vent. In the case of Mount Agung, it sits in the so-called Ring of Fire that rims Japan and most of Asia, including Indonesia. This area of the world is a subduction zone. The oceanic plate is diving below the continental tectonic plate and that creates a weak point in the Earth’s crust. When one tectonic plate, the oceanic plate of the eastern Pacific, goes down below the continental plate, the water rises and that lowers the melting temperature of the rock above. This forms magma and
the magma is less dense than the surrounding rock. It rises like the wax in a lava lamp and the pressure builds… and it needs to be relieved. So, ultimately, it’s small earthquakes and natural shifts in the tectonic plates that are creating this pressurized chamber that needs to vent. The first indication is always the seismic activity. These are often murmurs of activity deep below the surface. They aren’t felt as earthquakes because they are too deep or too subtle, but seismologists watch every shift and groan of the tectonic plates with interest. Some of the seismic monitoring is global scale. One earthquake over in Mexico, for instance, means the rest of the tectonic plates need to ease the strain of the new posi-
tion and they shift — often in ways we don’t completely understand of course, but it’s an indicator that seismologists need to be alert. Other seismic data is obtained right at the site of the volcano. When it comes to Mount Agung in Bali, there have been up to 600 seismic events per day as the volcano prepares for something. China suspends Many airlines not serving all their flights flights from Bali to China due to volcanic ash - report Though airport operating normally
SHANGHAI - China’s aviation authority has suspended all flights from the Indonesian holiday island of Bali to Chinese cities until the threat of volcanic ash clears, the state-run People’s Daily newspaper reported on Monday. Clouds of volcanic ash from Bali’s erupting Mount Agung volcano disrupted flights to and from the island’s airport last week, stranding many thousands of tourists.
Flights began resuming when the airport reopened on Wednesday, after the wind changed and blew the ash away from flight paths. Individual airlines make their own decisions on whether to operate. Australia’s Jetstar resumed flying tourists in to Bali on Monday, while Virgin Australia Holdings Ltd said it planned to do so on Tuesday. Despite the resumption of some services, China’s aviation authority was stopping any more flights after the return on Monday of the last charter flight, bringing to 15,237 the number of stranded Chinese tourists brought home, the People’s Daily newspaper said on its Twitter page. “China’s aviation authority has suspended all flights from Bali to Chinese cities until volcanic ash threat clears,” it said. China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines,
which stopped flying new tourists into Bali last week, told Reuters that any resumption of flights would depend on the situation. They declined to comment on the reported directive from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). The CAAC did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment. China Southern, which flies to Bali from the cities of Shenzhen and Guangzhou, said in an email that “due to volcanic activity in the area, the local airport and associated routes are not airworthy so flights on these two routes have been cancelled in the near term”. China has overtaken Australia this year as the biggest source of international visitors to Bali, representing about a quarter of the 4.9 million arrivals from January to September, according to industry statistics. Airlines avoid flying through volcanic ash as it can damage aircraft engines, clogging fuel and cooling systems, hampering pilot visibility and even causing engine failure. Sutopo Purwo Nugroh, a spokesman for Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency, said on Twitter that Mount Agung was no longer spewing ash but just white smoke that reached a height of 1,000 metres early on Monday.(rtr)

MANGUPURA - Although Ngurah Rai Airport has been operating normally since November 29 following the temporary closure due to the impact of volcanic ash from Mount Agung, many airlines are still not servicing routes to and from Bali. Based on data released by Ngurah Rai Airport ‘s Angkasa Pura I (AP I) on Sunday (Dec. 3), 12 domestic departures, 10 domestic arrivals, 17 international departures and 18 international arrivals are still not running. According to Section Head of Communication and Legal Affairs for Ngurah Rai Airport, Arie Ahsanurrohim, flight cancellations are determined by each airline based on operational considerations. Ngurah Rai Airport itself is operating nor-
mally. “ The number of flights that are still cancelled are not due to the airport being closed but due to the policies of the different airlines”, he explained. Head of the Airport Authority for Region IV of Bali-Nusa Tenggara, Herson, explained that the airlines cancelled their flights because so many passengers had cancelled their reservations – not because of the threat of ash. It is considered safe to fly in Bali because the ash form Mount Agung has been cleared by heavy rains. “However if there are indications of further eruptions, certainly we will check with information from the National Weather Service (BMKG) and Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Darwin”, he said. Two reason why there is no smoke coming out of Mount Agung
AMLAPURA - According to the Central for Volcanology and Disaster Mitigation Agency (PVMBG) there are two reasons why there is no a 1,500 -2,000 meter high puff of smoke coming from Mount Agung. Subdivision Head of Volcanic Mitigation for Eastern Region, Dedy Kamil Syahbana, said on Sunday (Dec. 3) that starting on Saturday (Dec. 2) at 19:00 only a bit of smoke was observed from the Rendang station. Seismicity is also low and the concentration of sulfuric gas (SO2) measured that afternoon dropped dramatically (20 times lower) compared to the eruption phase between November 26-27. It is possible that the the speed of the magma rising to the surface has diminished due to loss of energy as magmatic gas diminished after the last eruption, bringing equilibrium. However there is also the possibility that there is a block in the magma pipe caused by cold or hardened lava obstructing the fluid magma. “If the first possibility it the case, then the likelihood of an eruption will decrease because magma has lost mobility. If the second possibility is the case, the potential for an eruption increases as the magma pressures increases. If the strength of the lava covering up the magma exit is less that the pressure pressure accumulating beneath, then an eruption will occur’ said Devy Syahnana. In the case of a blocked magma exit passage, the volcano could remain quite for a long time but
with pressure building and eruption would be more explosive. IN the 1963 eruption, there a quite period of about 2 weeks before a major eruption that reached a height of about 23 kilometers. If the quite period is short then there is not a lot of pressure built up and an eruption would be similar to or less explosive than the one in 1963. “Volcanology must be approached probabilistically not deterministically. An element of uncertainty should always be included. Although we can explain some possibilities, Mount Aging has its own plans that may not include the above possibilities”, said Until now, volcanology has not yet been approached by a deterministic (definite) method considering it is a science approached with probabilistic (possibility) methods, where an element of uncertainty should always be included. Dazzling egg fossils crack open secrets of ancient flying reptiles
WASHINGTON - A dazzling discovery in northwestern China of hundreds of fossilized pterosaur eggs is providing fresh understanding of these flying reptiles that lived alongside the dinosaurs including evidence that their babies were born flightless and needed parental care. Scientists said on Thursday they unearthed 215 eggs of the fish-eating Hamipterus tianshanensis -- a species whose adults had a crest atop an elongated skull, pointy teeth and a wingspan of more than 11 feet (3.5 meters) -- including 16 eggs containing partial embryonic remains. Fossils of hundreds of male and female adult Hamipterus individuals were found alongside juveniles and eggs at the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region site, making this Cretaceous Period species that lived 120 million years ago perhaps the best understood of all pterosaurs. “We want to call this region ‘Pterosaur Eden,’” said paleontologist Shunxing Jiang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology. Pterosaurs were Earth’s first flying vertebrates. Birds and bats appeared later. Until now, no pterosaur eggs had been found with
embryos preserved in three dimensions. Researchers think up to 300 eggs may be present, some buried under the exposed fossils. The embryonic bones indicated the hind legs of a baby Hamipterus developed more rapidly than crucial wing elements like the humerus bone, said paleontologist Alexander Kellner of Museu Nacional in Rio de Janeiro. “Some birds can fly on the same day they break out from the egg, while some others will need a long period of parental care. Our conclusion is that a baby Hamipterus can walk but can’t fly,” Jiang said, an unexpected finding. The researchers believe these pterosaurs lived in a bustling colony near a large freshwater lake. Kellner cited evidence that females gathered together to lay eggs in nesting colonies and returned over the years to the same nesting site. They suspect the eggs and some juvenile and adult individuals were washed away from a nesting site in a storm and into the lake, where they were preserved and later fossilized. The oblong eggs, up to about 3 inches (7.2 cm) long, were pliable with a thin, hard outer layer marked by cracking and crazing covering a thick membrane inner layer, resembling soft eggs of some modern snakes and lizards. U.S. scientists take step toward creating artificial life CHICAGO - In a major step toward creating artificial life, U.S. researchers have developed a living organism that incorporates both natural and artificial DNA and is capable of creating entirely new, synthetic proteins. The work, published in the journal Nature, brings scientists closer to the development of designer proteins made to order in a laboratory. Previous work by Floyd Romesberg, a chemical biologist at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California, showed that it was possible to expand the genetic alphabet of natural DNA beyond its current four letters: adenine(A), cytosine(C), guanine (G) and thymine(T). In 2014, Romesberg and colleagues created a strain of E. coli bacteria that contained two unnatural letters, X and Y. In the latest work, Romesberg’s team has shown that this partially synthetic form of E. coli can take instructions from this hybrid genetic alphabet to make new proteins. “This is the first time ever a cell has translated a protein using something other than G, C, A or T,” Romesberg said. Although the actual changes to the organism were small, the feat is significant, he said in a telephone interview. “It’s the first change to life ever made.”
It’s a goal Romesberg has been working toward for the past 20 years. Creating new forms of life, however, is not the main point. Romesberg is interested in using this expanded genetic alphabet to create new types of proteins that can be used to treat disease. In 2014, he formed a company called Synthorx Inc, which is working on developing new proteinbased treatments. “A lot of proteins that you want to use as drugs get cleared in the kidney very quickly,” Romesberg said. The new system would allow scientists to attach fat molecules to drugs to keep them in the body longer. Romesberg is aware that the creation of semi-synthetic organisms might raise concerns of hybrid life forms spreading beyond the lab, but the system they used makes such an escape unlikely. For example, in natural DNA, base pairs are attracted to each other through the bonding of hydrogen atoms. Romesberg’s X and Y bases are attracted through an entirely different process, which prevents them from accidentally bonding with natural bases. And because cells cannot make their own X and Y without the addition of certain chemicals, the semi-synthetic organisms cannot live outside of a laboratory. (rtr)

Monkey Forest employs approximately 146 local residents. They are selected according to the needs and their skills. “We also encourage and finance employees to learn foreign languages, like English and others for the sake of services,” said Buana who is an alumnus of the Faculty of Agriculture, Udayana University. Monkey Forest is a tourist attraction owned and managed by Padangtegal customary village, Ubud. All the employees are local residents and the revenues obtained are submitted to customary village to support community welfare. management. According to the census conducted in July 2017, the area of 12.5 hectares is inhabited by 731 monkeys. The monkeys in the forest belong to long-tailed ones. “It does not mean they have long tail, but the tail size is longer than their body length,” he said. Its Latin name is Macca fascicularis. Due to its strategic location in the tourist area of Ubud, the Monkey Forest attracts many tourists. On average, the daily visit reaches 3,000 people. During high season, it can reach 4,000 people per day, and once during Eid-Al-Fitr holiday and Chinese New Year falling adjacent, the visitors reached 5,000 people. The admission fee is distinguished in terms of foreign, domestic, local Balinese, students and children. For foreign and domestic tourists, the ticket is sold for IDR 50,000, children for IDR 40,000; and local visitors with Bali identity card for IDR 30,000. Ticket price has included parking fees, insurance and all types of hospitality during tourists visiting the Monkey Forest. Freelance photographer service is not allowed to operate inside the Monkey Forest area for the sake of guests’ convenience. “Besides, tourists have their own cameras,” he said. Evacuees relieved about their livestock
DENPASAR — Humans- as well as livestock have been evacuated from Karangasem due to the threat of Mount Agung erupting further. Since most of the residents of villages within the danger zone work as farmers, breeding livestock is an important source of income. When the alert level for Mount Agung was first raised some months ago, many people from this area rushed to sell their livestock even though they had to sell at a low price. Now, however as people from Karangasem have become better informed, they are no longer in a panic about what to do about their livestock during the evacuation. Chief of the Mount Agung Eruption Command Taskforce for Animal Husbandry and Animal Health, IKG Nata Kesuma, said that livestock owners who have been evacuated form the danger zone have been informed about how to make sure their livestock remain safe in facilities made available by the government. These temporary animal refuges located in several different areas, have reported that some cattle have been sold. This time however the farmers did not sell their cattle because they were in a panic but simple in order to provide funds for provisions during their time in the evacuation post. “ Officers of the animal shelters supervise such transactions to ensure that fair prices are offered”, said Kusuma.
The following are the average market prices for cattle: IDR 5-6 million for female calf , IDR 6-7 million for male calf, IDR 8-10 million for adult female. Adult males are sold by the kilo. Adult male weighing 300350kg are sold for IDR 40,000 per kilo, while those weighing above 400kg are sold for DIR 42,000-IDR 43,000 per kg. Kusuma added that not many cattle have been sold recently as most of the evacuees who returned home at the end of October when the alert level decreased, did not want to purchase cattle given that the condition of the Mount Agung remained uncertain. Between September 23rd and December 2nd, a total of 10,235 head of cattle have been evacuated from the danger zone from a total of approximately 14,000. Evacuated livestock consist of: 8,511 cows (mostly female and young calves as well as sires that are not for sale), 1,011 goats and 713 pigs. There are 16 different animal shelters located in 5 districts where 2, 711 animals are being kept safe. Klungkung is sheltering 94 heads of livestock, Buleleleng 1, 244, Gianyar 133, Bangli 17 and Karangasem’s safe zone also a an animal shelter where 1, 230 head of livestock are being kept. The livestock are not only accommodated but also provided with feed. Recent data shows that remaining fed stocks consist of 229 tons of concentrate, 15,750 kg of straw, 50.5 tons of forage (HPT), 5 tons of other forage, 46.940 kg of silage and 59 tons of sugar cane shoots. Philippines orders probe into Sanofi dengue vaccine for 730,000 children

MANILA - The Philippines ordered a probe on Monday into the immunisation of more than 730,000 children with a vaccine for dengue that has been suspended following an announcement by French drug company Sanofi that it could worsen the disease in some cases. Amid mounting public concern, Sanofi explained its “new findings” at a news conference in Manila, but it did not say why action was not taken after a World Health Organization (WHO) report in mid-2016 that identified the risk it was now flagging. A non-governmental organisation (NGO) said it had received information that three children who were vaccinated with Dengvaxia had died and a senator said he was aware of two cases. However, Department of Health Undersecretary Gerardo Bayugo told Reuters that the three referred to by the NGO died due to causes not related to the vaccine, and Sanofi said no deaths had been reported as a result of the programme. “As far as we know, as far as we are made aware, there are no reported deaths that are related to dengue vaccination,” said Ruby Dizon, medical director at Sanofi Pasteur Philippines. Last week, the Philippines Department of Health halted the use of Dengvaxia after Sanofi said it must be strictly limited due to evidence it can worsen the disease in people not previously exposed to the infection. In a statement, Sanofi said the long-term safety evaluation of the vaccines showed significantly fewer hospitalisations due to dengue in vaccinated people over 9 years old compared with those who had not been vaccinated. Nearly 734,000 children aged 9 and over in the Philippines have received one dose of the vaccine as part of a programme that cost 3.5 billion pesos ($69.54 million). The Department of Justice on Monday ordered the National Bureau of Investigation to look into “the alleged danger to public health ... and if evidence so warrants, to file appropriate charges thereon.” There was no indication that Philippines health officials knew of any risks when they administered the vaccination. However, the WHO said in a July 2016 research paper that “vaccination may be ineffective or may theoretically even increase the future risk of hospitalised or severe dengue illness in those who are seronegative at the time of first vaccination regardless of age.” (rtr)

However after Bali Police Chief Petrus R Golose, visited the officers asking that they return to their village to continue protecting those who had not yet evacuated, they promptly complied. Chief of Selat Police, I Made Sudartawan, said on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 3) that despite being within the warning zone, the Selat Police station should remain in operation because may people from this com-
munity have yet to evacuate. “We want these residents to have access to police security and updated information about how to mitigate a possible volcanic eruption”, explained the chief of the Selat Police.
People consider the police station as a representation of security in the area, he said. So if the police station has moved it means that the area is no longer secure. Whereas as long as there are police there,m

BANGLI — The number of people evacuating from Mount Agung to Bangli continues to increase. According data from the Bangli’s Disaster Emergency Response for Mount Agung, as of December 3, there were a total of 900 evacuees in Bangli. Although dry food stocks remain sufficient, stocks of vegetables are running thin. Subdivision Head of Public Relation of the Mount Agung Emergency Disaster Relief Post in the district of Bangli, Cok Bagus Gaya Dirga, with permission from
post commander explained that of 900 people (203 families) from Karangasem who have evacuated to Bangli , 528 people were evacuated to Kubu’s main post and the other 732 to the SKB post. “This shows an increase in the number of refugees compared to previously”, he explained. Cok Gaya Dirga said that last donation of vegetable was received from the Dharma Wanita organization a few days ago. Last week they ran out of vegetables. “ Tomorrow we will already be out of stock”, he explained.
If we have not received any vegetables by Monday we will have to buy some or coordinate with the Tanah Ampo post. Dirga added that he hopes there will be some donations of vegetables to the post so that the nutritional needs of the evacuees can be met. “ If possible vegetables that can be stored such as carrots, eggplants and others”, he said. This location is one of eight selfie attractions in the customary hamlet of Bhuana Sari, in Wanagiri Village. The iconic Black Bamboo Tower stands on the edge of a cliff by the side of the road with Lake Bunyan and verdant hills as a backdrop. Operator of Bhuana Sari customary hamlet, Ketut Darma, said that bamboo belonging to the local customary village was used to make the iconic selfie attraction and that three security guards are on duty everyday to ensure the security of the increasing number of visitors who come to Black Bamboo Tower. “On a quiet day we get about 30-40 visitors but on holidays there is a 80 percent increase in the number of people who come to take pictures here. According to the customary hamlet’s agreement, visitors are charged IDR 15,000 per person to take as many pictures as they want”, explained Darma. Wanagiri village has 4 customary hamlets namely; Bhuana Sari, Yeh Ketipat, Asah Panji Kaja, and Asah Panji Kelod. “In short, of the eight selfie attractions in Wanagiri village, only the ones at Bhuana Sari customary hamlet have been granted permission by the BKSDA. The others have no agreement with the customary village’s selfie-site management group”, said Suwena. According to Suwena, the BKSDA has limited the number of selfie-sites to four and has stipulated that such sites should not be managed by individuals or private groups as this could lead to jealousy. This limit is also meant to prevent a saturation of such sites as this could create chaos as lead to possible security risks. “Let the BKSDA determine the limits on such buildings including how far they can jut out off the cliff, how they should be designed and so forth. So far only Bhuana Sari has been given the ok from the BSKDA”, explained Suwena. Division Head of Tourist Destinations for the Bali Tourism Office, Ida Bagus Adi Laksana, said he strongly supports local people creating selfie tourist attractions adding that management issues should be resolved through discussions. Each village should also have clear guidelines so as to prevent the mushrooming of such sites. “Hopefully such guidelines can be made clear by governing bodies that will be established under village authorities. Ingredients of this jaja lapis (layered cake) include white rice flour, sugar, salt, sago flour, coconut milk, fragrant pandan leaves and food
coloring to taste. In the past, people used use coloring from leaves, so it had a minimal color namely white and green only. How to prepare it? Firstly, boil coconut milk with fragrant pandan leaves. Then, add with salt to taste and stir finely. At the same time, also prepare one tray and put rice flour, sago flour and mixed sugar into one. After that, pour boiled coconut milk into the flour mixture and then mix them well.
To determine the color, it begins by dividing the dough into some portions according to the number of colors desired. After dividing, give color to each portion of dough and then stir to blend well. S.Korea, U.S. launch air drills amid N.Korean warnings of nuclear war
SEOUL - The United States and South Korea went ahead with large-scale joint aerial drills on Monday, a move North Korea had said would push the Korean peninsula to “the brink of nuclear war”, ignoring calls from Russia and China to call them off.

When Mount St. Helens erupted there was a 100 metre change in the height of the crater days before. That made it pretty obvious that something big was happening. Mount Agung isn’t having the same obvious signals, but there is off-gassing, movement and the general seismic activity that is placing everyone on high alert. And I should say, Mount Agung is no stranger to devastating eruptions. The last time it erupted was 1963 with a volcanic explosivity index rating of 5. It’s a logarithmic scale like the Richter scale and that’s big. Even Mount St. Helens was about a 4 to 5. So this volcano
could be very, very dangerous. Why is it so difficult to predict volcanic activity? Because no one wants to get too close! And because these shifts and movements of the Earth are happening 30 kilometres or more below the surface of the Earth. It’s hard enough to predict the weather on the surface let alone what is happening deep below. And because each volcano seems to have its own personality, studying one eruption doesn’t necessarily help with a volcano on the other side of the world. Historical data is the best. For instance, the 1963 eruption of Mount Agung was pretty well documented and yet conditions are bound to be different this time. Last time Agung erupted, it had a period of unrest, of seismic signals and venting of steam, and then had one big eruption. But it

Last-minute wrangling as May heads for Brussels Brexit lunch BRUSSELS - British negotiators were locked in last-minute talks with their European Union and Irish counterparts on Monday, trying to put together a Brexit deal that Prime Minister Theresa May might agree over lunch in Brussels. London has broadly agreed to many of the EU’s divorce terms, including paying out something like 50 billion euros. But the issues of the rights of expatriate citizens and the UK-EU border on the island of Ireland remain fraught, diplomats said. Brussels officials and diplomats sounded increasingly confident of a deal over the weekend, but they caution that much will depend on the outcome of May’s talks over lunch. Science can’t tell until the seismologists get their hands on what is happening down there at that fault line. There’s no reliable data beyond that 1963 eruption that could say that this is just part of what Agung likes to do. If there is a big event — I mean the volcano really blows — that could create a category 5 strength eruption. That is catastrophic in and of itself but that may only really explode about a cubic kilometre of material. As Natural Resources Canada volcanologist Melanie Kelman explains, it’s not the eruption per se that is dangerous, so long as you aren’t standing on the slopes. It’s the aftermath: “There’s a couple hazards that are more of an issue further away. One
is lahars, which are volcanic debris flows and mud flows. And lahar is actually an Indonesian word because they have so many of them in Indonesia. Because those travel down streams and can travel a long way, they can travel maybe up to 100 kilometres from the source volcano, so they can cause problems much further away.” There’s a huge risk to the entire island of Bali. The whole place is only 150 kilometres by about 110 kilometres at the largest points. All of the 4 million inhabitants will be affected by the volcano, some by the relatively minor annoyance of cleaning ash up. Others will have to deal with mudslides and destroyed homes. All we can do now is hope Agung will go back to sleep and release the gas and pressure it needs to. (rtr)

Indonesia president nominates air chief to replace controversial military head
JAKARTA - Indonesian President Joko Widodo has nominated the chief of staff of the air force to be the new head of the armed forces (TNI), to replace a controversial general who is due to retire in April. Air Chief Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto has close ties to the president and was previously in charge of an air base in the city of Solo, on the island of Java, when Widodo was its mayor. Since then, Tjahjanto has been promoted a number of times including to inspector general of
the defence ministry and the president’s military secretary. “Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto is considered
capable and qualified to become TNI commander,” presidential spokesman Johan Budi told reporters on Monday after confirming the nomination. The proposal had been sent to the parliament, which needs to approve it, he said. Abdul Kharis Almasyhari, chairman of a parliamentary commission with oversight of defence and security, said the commission would do a “fit and proper” assessment of the nomination, which hopefully
could be completed by a Dec. 14 recess. The outgoing armed forces chef, General Gatot Nurmantyo, who will step down at the end of his term in April, has often courted controversy over what analysts see as his political ambitions. He has been accused of whipping up nationalist sentiment by promoting the notion that Indonesia is besieged by “proxy wars” waged by foreign states looking to undermine it.
In October, Widodo said the armed forces should stay out of politics and ensure their loyalty was only to the state and the government - a statement many believed referred to Nurmantyo’s actions. There has been speculation that Nurmantyo would seek to run for vice president or even president in 2019. Nurmantyo has not confirmed any political ambitions. Floods hit 21 villages in Tebing Tinggi, N Sumatra
MEDAN - Floods have hit 21 villages in five sub-districts, Tebing Tinggi, North Sumatra Province, since Saturday. The flooding was triggered by incessant heavy rains in upstream areas in Simalungun District and Pematang Siantar, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), said in a statement, here, Sunday. Padang and Bahilang Rivers have spilled over their banks because of the heavy rains.
A total of 21,080 people or 5,985 families have been affected by the flooding. The Tebing Tinggi disaster mitigation office has set up emergency tents to accommodate evacuees. Relief aid comprising rice, breads, instant noodles, and 10 thousand boxes of meals, have been distributed to flood victims. The affected villages are among other things Pabatu, Padang Merbau, Tualang, Lubuk Raya, Lubuk Baru, and Persiakan, which are located in Padang Hulu sub-district.
In Bandar Utama sub-district, flooding hits Badak Bejuang, while in Tebing Tinggi, flood inundates Tebing Tinggi Lama. Sri Padang, Karya Jaya, Tanjung Marulak, and Tanjung Marulak Hilir villages in Rambutan subdistrict are also flooded. In Bajenis sub-district, floods inundate Teluk Karang, Bulian, Brohol, Pinang Mancung, and Bandar Sakti. The villages of Satria and Tambangan Hulu in Padang Hilir sub-district, are also flooded. NEW PROVIDENCE - Tiger Woods proved he could be competitive again after playing some of the best golf of his comeback with a final-round four-under 68 to tie for ninth at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas on Sunday. No one could match Rickie Fowler, though. The world number nine birdied his first seven holes and won the elite event by four strokes thanks to a course record 11-under par 61 that left him at 18-under 270. Woods was 10 strokes back but he had plenty of smiles as he answered the question of how he would do in his first tournament in nearly 10 months following spinal fusion surgery. MILAN - Benevento grabbed their firstever Serie A point in extraordinary style on Sunday when goalkeeper Alberto Brignoli scored with a flying header deep into stoppage time to give them a 2-2 draw with AC Milan. With Benevento having lost their first 14 top flight matches, the result was another deep embarrassment to big-spending AC Milan who were playing their first match under new coach Gennaro Gattuso, their fiery former midfielder, after sacking Vincenzo Montella on Monday. In a later game, Ivan Perisic scored a hat-trick to lead unbeaten Inter Milan to a 5-0 win over Chievo which took them top of the table, overhauling Napoli who lost 1-0 at home to Juventus on Friday. MILAN - Carlo Ancelotti says he has been approached by Italian FA about the possibility of coaching the national side but that he prefers to keep working in club football. Ancelotti, sacked by Bayern Munich in September, said he was honoured that Italians see him as the man to replace Gian Piero Ventura who was fired after Italy astonishingly failed to qualify for
next year’s World Cup. However, he added: “It would be a completely different job. I want to continue coaching in club football. I still enjoy training and working every day. “Italian football has some problems and I don’t think I can solve them on my own, it’s the whole system that needs to be changed,” he told the “Domenica Sportiva” programme on state broadcaster Rai.
“There is a conflict between the federation and the clubs. The federation needs to impose itself on the clubs to improve the system.” Ancelotti, 58, is one of Europe’s most successful coaches, having won the Champions League with both AC Milan and Real Madrid. MILAN - Benevento grabbed their firstever Serie A point in extraordinary style on Sunday when goalkeeper Alberto Brignoli scored with a flying header deep into stoppage time to give them a 2-2 draw with AC Milan. With Benevento having lost their first 14 top flight matches, the result was another deep embarrassment to big-spending AC Milan who were playing their first match under new coach Gennaro Gattuso, their fiery former midfielder, after sacking Vincenzo Montella on Monday. In a later game, Ivan Perisic scored a hat-trick to lead unbeaten Inter Milan to a 5-0 win over Chievo which took them top of the table, overhauling Napoli who lost 1-0 at home to Juventus on Friday. NEW PROVIDENCE - Tiger Woods proved he could be competitive again after playing some of the best golf of his comeback with a final-round four-under 68 to tie for ninth at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas on Sunday. No one could match Rickie Fowler, though. The world number nine birdied his first seven holes and won the elite event by four strokes thanks to a course record 11-under par 61 that left him at 18-under 270. Woods was 10 strokes back but he had plenty of smiles as he answered the question of how he would do in his first tournament in nearly 10 months following spinal fusion surgery. S.Korea, U.S. launch air drills amid N.Korean warnings of nuclear war
SEOUL - The United States and South Korea went ahead with large-scale joint aerial drills on Monday, a move North Korea had said would push the Korean peninsula to “the brink of nuclear war”, ignoring calls from Russia and China to call them off.
The drills come a week after North Korea said it had tested its most advanced intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching the United States as part of a weapons programme that it has conducted in defiance of international sanctions and condemnation. Mount Agung isn’t having the same obvious signals, but there is off-gassing, movement and the general seismic activity that is placing everyone on high alert. And I should say, Mount Agung is no stranger to devastating eruptions. The last time it erupted was 1963 with a volcanic explosivity index rating of 5. It’s a logarithmic scale like the Richter scale and that’s big. Even Mount St. Helens was about a 4 to 5. So this volcano
could be very, very dangerous. Why is it so difficult to predict volcanic activity? Because no one wants to get too close! And because these shifts and movements of the Earth are happening 30 kilometres or more below the surface of the Earth. It’s hard enough to predict the weather on the surface let alone what is happening deep below. And because each volcano seems to have its own personality, studying one eruption doesn’t necessarily help with a volcano on the other side of the world. Historical data is the best. For instance, the 1963 eruption of Mount Agung was pretty well documented and yet conditions are bound to be different this time. Last time Agung erupted, it had a period of unrest, of seismic signals and venting of steam, and then had one big eruption. But it

But the issues of the rights of expatriate citizens and the UK-EU border on the island of Ireland remain fraught, diplomats said. There’s no reliable data beyond that 1963 eruption that could say that this is just part of what Agung likes to do. If there is a big event — I mean the volcano really blows — that could create a category 5 strength eruption. That is catastrophic in and of itself but that may only really explode about a cubic kilometre of material. As Natural Resources Canada volcanologist Melanie Kelman explains, it’s not the eruption per se that is dangerous, so long as you aren’t standing on the slopes. It’s the aftermath: “There’s a couple hazards that are more of an issue further away. One
is lahars, which are volcanic debris flows and mud flows. And lahar is actually an Indonesian word because they have so many of them in Indonesia. Because those travel down streams and can travel a long way, they can travel maybe up to 100 kilometres from the source volcano, so they can cause problems much further away.” There’s a huge risk to the entire island of Bali. The whole place is only 150 kilometres by about 110 kilometres at the largest points. All of the 4 million inhabitants will be affected by the volcano, some by the relatively minor annoyance of cleaning ash up. Others will have to deal with mudslides and destroyed homes. All we can do now is hope Agung will go back to sleep and release the gas and pressure it needs to. (rtr)

Indonesia president nominates air chief to replace controversial military head
JAKARTA - Indonesian President Joko Widodo has nominated the chief of staff of the air force to be the new head of the armed forces (TNI), to replace a controversial general who is due to retire in April. Air Chief Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto has close ties to the president and was previously in charge of an air base in the city of Solo, on the island of Java, when Widodo was its mayor. Since then, Tjahjanto has been promoted a number of times including to inspector general of
the defence ministry and the president’s military secretary. “Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto is considered
capable and qualified to become TNI commander,” presidential spokesman Johan Budi told reporters on Monday after confirming the nomination. The proposal had been sent to the parliament, which needs to approve it, he said. Abdul Kharis Almasyhari, chairman of a parliamentary commission with oversight of defence and security, said the commission would do a “fit and proper” assessment of the nomination, which hopefully
could be completed by a Dec. 14 recess. The outgoing armed forces chef, General Gatot Nurmantyo, who will step down at the end of his term in April, has often courted controversy over what analysts see as his political ambitions. He has been accused of whipping up nationalist sentiment by promoting the notion that Indonesia is besieged by “proxy wars” waged by foreign states looking to undermine it.
In October, Widodo said the armed forces should stay out of politics and ensure their loyalty was only to the state and the government - a statement many believed referred to Nurmantyo’s actions. There has been speculation that Nurmantyo would seek to run for vice president or even president in 2019. Nurmantyo has not confirmed any political ambitions. Floods hit 21 villages in Tebing Tinggi, N Sumatra
MEDAN - Floods have hit 21 villages in five sub-districts, Tebing Tinggi, North Sumatra Province, since Saturday. The flooding was triggered by incessant heavy rains in upstream areas in Simalungun District and Pematang Siantar, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), said in a statement, here, Sunday. Padang and Bahilang Rivers have spilled over their banks because of the heavy rains.
A total of 21,080 people or 5,985 families have been affected by the flooding. The Tebing Tinggi disaster mitigation office has set up emergency tents to accommodate evacuees. Relief aid comprising rice, breads, instant noodles, and 10 thousand boxes of meals, have been distributed to flood victims. The affected villages are among other things Pabatu, Padang Merbau, Tualang, Lubuk Raya, Lubuk Baru, and Persiakan, which are located in Padang Hulu sub-district.
In Bandar Utama sub-district, flooding hits Badak Bejuang, while in Tebing Tinggi, flood inundates Tebing Tinggi Lama. Sri Padang, Karya Jaya, Tanjung Marulak, and Tanjung Marulak Hilir villages in Rambutan subdistrict are also flooded. In Bajenis sub-district, floods inundate Teluk Karang, Bulian, Brohol, Pinang Mancung, and Bandar Sakti. The villages of Satria and Tambangan Hulu in Padang Hilir sub-district, are also flooded. LONDON - The dollar jumped on Monday versus the currencies of other developed and emerging nations while Treasury yields rose and Wall Street was primed for a another recordsetting day after the U.S. Senates voted to approve a wide-ranging tax overhaul. European stocks opened higher, with French, German and British markets up 0.9 to 1.4 percent, anticipating a strong New York session - futures for the Dow Jones, S&P 500 and Nasdaq indexes rallied as much as 0.9 percent . Markets are reacting to the Senate’s approval on Saturday for the biggest tax law change since the 1980s, taking President Donald Trump closer to his goal of slashing taxes for businesses. “With this tax deal, markets could pick up speed into the end of the year. It looks like the ingredients for a year-end rally are there,” said Angelo Meda, head of equities at asset manager Banor SIM in Milan, predicting equity gains of 3 to 4 percent. Tax cut hopes have been a significant tailwind this year for U.S. stocks, although the move is expected to add to the country’s $20 trillion national debt and increase the chances of more aggressive near-term rate rises in the world’s largest economy. Those expectations pushed the dollar up as much as 0.4 percent against a basket of currencies, while Treasury yields rose across the curve. This location is one of eight selfie attractions in the customary hamlet of Bhuana Sari, in Wanagiri Village. The iconic Black Bamboo Tower stands on the edge of a cliff by the side of the road with Lake Bunyan and verdant hills as a backdrop. Operator of Bhuana Sari customary hamlet, Ketut Darma, said that bamboo belonging to the local customary village was used to make the iconic selfie attraction and that three security guards are on duty everyday to ensure the security of the increasing number of visitors who come to Black Bamboo Tower. “On a quiet day we get about 30-40 visitors but on holidays there is a 80 percent increase in the number of people who come to take pictures here. According to Suwena, the BKSDA has limited the number of selfie-sites to four and has stipulated that such sites should not be managed by individuals or private groups as this could lead to jealousy. This limit is also meant to prevent a saturation of such sites as this could create chaos as lead to possible security risks. “Let the BKSDA determine the limits on such buildings including how far they can jut out off the cliff, how they should be designed and so forth. So far only Bhuana Sari has been given the ok from the BSKDA”, explained Suwena. Division Head of Tourist Destinations for the Bali Tourism Office, Ida Bagus Adi Laksana, said he strongly supports local people creating selfie tourist attractions adding that management issues should be resolved through discussions. Each village should also have clear guidelines so as to prevent the mushrooming of such sites. “Hopefully such guidelines can be made clear by governing bodies that will be established under village authorities. Philippines orders probe into Sanofi dengue vaccine for 730,000 children

MANILA - The Philippines ordered a probe on Monday into the immunisation of more than 730,000 children with a vaccine for dengue that has been suspended following an announcement by French drug company Sanofi that it could worsen the disease in some cases. Amid mounting public concern, Sanofi explained its “new findings” at a news conference in Manila, but it did not say why action was not taken after a World Health Organization (WHO) report in mid-2016 that identified the risk it was now flagging. A non-governmental organisation (NGO) said it had received information that three children who were vaccinated with Dengvaxia had died and a senator said he was aware of two cases. However, Department of Health Undersecretary Gerardo Bayugo told Reuters that the three referred to by the NGO died due to causes not related to the vaccine, and Sanofi said no deaths had been reported as a result of the programme. “As far as we know, as far as we are made aware, there are no reported deaths that are related to dengue vaccination,” said Ruby Dizon, medical director at Sanofi Pasteur Philippines. Last week, the Philippines Department of Health halted the use of Dengvaxia after Sanofi said it must be strictly limited due to evidence it can worsen the disease in people not previously exposed to the infection. In a statement, Sanofi said the long-term safety evaluation of the vaccines showed significantly fewer hospitalisations due to dengue in vaccinated people over 9 years old compared with those who had not been vaccinated. Nearly 734,000 children aged 9 and over in the Philippines have received one dose of the vaccine as part of a programme that cost 3.5 billion pesos ($69.54 million). The Department of Justice on Monday ordered the National Bureau of Investigation to look into “the alleged danger to public health ... and if evidence so warrants, to file appropriate charges thereon.” There was no indication that Philippines health officials knew of any risks when they administered the vaccination. However, the WHO said in a July 2016 research paper that “vaccination may be ineffective or may theoretically even increase the future risk of hospitalised or severe dengue illness in those who are seronegative at the time of first vaccination regardless of age.” (rtr)

However after Bali Police Chief Petrus R Golose, visited the officers asking that they return to their village to continue protecting those who had not yet evacuated, they promptly complied. Chief of Selat Police, I Made Sudartawan, said on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 3) that despite being within the warning zone, the Selat Police station should remain in operation because may people from this com-

BANGLI — The number of people evacuating from Mount Agung to Bangli continues to increase. According data from the Bangli’s Disaster Emergency Response for Mount Agung, as of December 3, there were a total of 900 evacuees in Bangli. Although dry food stocks remain sufficient, stocks of vegetables are running thin. Subdivision Head of Public Relation of the Mount Agung Emergency Disaster Relief Post in the district of Bangli, Cok Bagus Gaya Dirga, with permission from
post commander explained that of 900 people (203 families) from Karangasem who have evacuated to Bangli , 528 people were evacuated to Kubu’s main post and the other 732 to the SKB post. “This shows an increase in the number of refugees compared to previously”, he explained. Cok Gaya Dirga said that last donation of vegetable was received from the Dharma Wanita organization a few days ago. Last week they ran out of vegetables. “ Tomorrow we will already be out of stock”, he explained.
If we have not received any vegetables by Monday we will have to buy some or coordinate with the Tanah Ampo post. Dirga added that he hopes there will be some donations of vegetables to the post so that the nutritional needs of the evacuees can be met. “ If possible vegetables that can be stored such as carrots, eggplants and others”, he said. Dazzling egg fossils crack open secrets of ancient flying reptiles
WASHINGTON - A dazzling discovery in northwestern China of hundreds of fossilized pterosaur eggs is providing fresh understanding of these flying reptiles that lived alongside the dinosaurs including evidence that their babies were born flightless and needed parental care. Scientists said on Thursday they unearthed 215 eggs of the fish-eating Hamipterus tianshanensis -- a species whose adults had a crest atop an elongated skull, pointy teeth and a wingspan of more than 11 feet (3.5 meters) -- including 16 eggs containing partial embryonic remains. Fossils of hundreds of male and female adult Hamipterus individuals were found alongside juveniles and eggs at the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region site, making this Cretaceous Period species that lived 120 million years ago perhaps the best understood of all pterosaurs. “We want to call this region ‘Pterosaur Eden,’” said paleontologist Shunxing Jiang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology. Pterosaurs were Earth’s first flying vertebrates. Birds and bats appeared later. Until now, no pterosaur eggs had been found with
embryos preserved in three dimensions. Researchers think up to 300 eggs may be present, some buried under the exposed fossils. The embryonic bones indicated the hind legs of a baby Hamipterus developed more rapidly than crucial wing elements like the humerus bone, said paleontologist Alexander Kellner of Museu Nacional in Rio de Janeiro. “Some birds can fly on the same day they break out from the egg, while some others will need a long period of parental care. Our conclusion is that a baby Hamipterus can walk but can’t fly,” Jiang said, an unexpected finding. The researchers believe these pterosaurs lived in a bustling colony near a large freshwater lake. Kellner cited evidence that females gathered together to lay eggs in nesting colonies and returned over the years to the same nesting site. They suspect the eggs and some juvenile and adult individuals were washed away from a nesting site in a storm and into the lake, where they were preserved and later fossilized. The oblong eggs, up to about 3 inches (7.2 cm) long, were pliable with a thin, hard outer layer marked by cracking and crazing covering a thick membrane inner layer, resembling soft eggs of some modern snakes and lizards. U.S. scientists take step toward creating artificial life CHICAGO - In a major step toward creating artificial life, U.S. researchers have developed a living organism that incorporates both natural and artificial DNA and is capable of creating entirely new, synthetic proteins. The work, published in the journal Nature, brings scientists closer to the development of designer proteins made to order in a laboratory. Previous work by Floyd Romesberg, a chemical biologist at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California, showed that it was possible to expand the genetic alphabet of natural DNA beyond its current four letters: adenine(A), cytosine(C), guanine (G) and thymine(T). In 2014, Romesberg and colleagues created a strain of E. coli bacteria that contained two unnatural letters, X and Y. In the latest work, Romesberg’s team has shown that this partially synthetic form of E. coli can take instructions from this hybrid genetic alphabet to make new proteins. “This is the first time ever a cell has translated a protein using something other than G, C, A or T,” Romesberg said. Although the actual changes to the organism were small, the feat is significant, he said in a telephone interview. “It’s the first change to life ever made.”
It’s a goal Romesberg has been working toward for the past 20 years. Creating new forms of life, however, is not the main point. Romesberg is interested in using this expanded genetic alphabet to create new types of proteins that can be used to treat disease. In 2014, he formed a company called Synthorx Inc, which is working on developing new proteinbased treatments. “A lot of proteins that you want to use as drugs get cleared in the kidney very quickly,” Romesberg said. The new system would allow scientists to attach fat molecules to drugs to keep them in the body longer. Romesberg is aware that the creation of semi-synthetic organisms might raise concerns of hybrid life forms spreading beyond the lab, but the system they used makes such an escape unlikely. For example, in natural DNA, base pairs are attracted to each other through the bonding of hydrogen atoms. Romesberg’s X and Y bases are attracted through an entirely different process, which prevents them from accidentally bonding with natural bases. And because cells cannot make their own X and Y without the addition of certain chemicals, the semi-synthetic organisms cannot live outside of a laboratory. (rtr)

The Monkey Forest implementing community-based tourism (CBT) in its management stays to prioritize professional management. This was conveyed by GM of Monkey Forest, Ubud, I Nyoman Buana, on Friday (Dec. 1) when the students of Master Program of Tourism Studies, Faculty of Tourism, Udayana University, conducted a field study to the tourist attraction of Monkey Forest, Ubud. I Nyoman Buana explained the income obtained from Monkey Forest is used for the management and paying tax to Gianyar district government as much as 12.5 percent while the remaining is handed over to customary village as the owner of the tourist attraction. “The village uses it to finance ceremonies, help residents carrying out cremation as well as for scholarship,” he said. Monkey Forest employs approximately 146 local residents. They are selected according to the needs and their skills. “We also encourage and finance employees to learn foreign languages, like English and others for the sake of services,” said Buana who is an alumnus of the Faculty of Agriculture, Udayana University. Monkey Forest is a tourist attraction owned and managed by Padangtegal customary village, Ubud. All the employees are local residents and the revenues obtained are submitted to customary village to support community welfare. The government does not participate in the management as it is fully handled by the community through the established

management. According to the census conducted in July 2017, the area of 12.5 hectares is inhabited by 731 monkeys. The monkeys in the forest belong to long-tailed ones. “It does not mean they have long tail, but the tail size is longer than their body length,” he said. Its Latin name is Macca fascicularis. Due to its strategic location in the tourist area of Ubud, the Monkey Forest attracts many tourists. On average, the daily visit reaches 3,000 people. During high season, it can reach 4,000 people per day, and once during Eid-Al-Fitr holiday and Chinese New Year falling adjacent, the visitors reached 5,000 people. The admission fee is distinguished in terms of foreign, domestic, local Balinese, students and children. For foreign and domestic tourists, the ticket is sold for IDR 50,000, children for IDR 40,000; and local visitors with Bali identity card for IDR 30,000. Ticket price has included parking fees, insurance and all types of hospitality during tourists visiting the Monkey Forest. Freelance photographer service is not allowed to operate inside the Monkey Forest area for the sake of guests’ convenience. “Besides, tourists have their own cameras,” he said. Head of Tourism Study Program of Udayana University, Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Darma Putra, said that although Monkey Forest of Ubud is considered a ‘village class’ tourist attraction and managed by local community, in terms of facilities, it looks excellent and has good quality. Evacuees relieved about their livestock
DENPASAR — Humans- as well as livestock have been evacuated from Karangasem due to the threat of Mount Agung erupting further. Since most of the residents of villages within the danger zone work as farmers, breeding livestock is an important source of income. When the alert level for Mount Agung was first raised some months ago, many people from this area rushed to sell their livestock even though they had to sell at a low price. Now, however as people from Karangasem have become better informed, they are no longer in a panic about what to do about their livestock during the evacuation. Chief of the Mount Agung Eruption Command Taskforce for Animal Husbandry and Animal Health, IKG Nata Kesuma, said that livestock owners who have been evacuated form the danger zone have been informed about how to make sure their livestock remain safe in facilities made available by the government. These temporary animal refuges located in several different areas, have reported that some cattle have been sold. This time however the farmers did not sell their cattle because they were in a panic but simple in order to provide funds for provisions during their time in the evacuation post. “ Officers of the animal shelters supervise such transactions to ensure that fair prices are offered”, said Kusuma.
The following are the average market prices for cattle: IDR 5-6 million for female calf , IDR 6-7 million for male calf, IDR 8-10 million for adult female. Adult males are sold by the kilo. Adult male weighing 300350kg are sold for IDR 40,000 per kilo, while those weighing above 400kg are sold for DIR 42,000-IDR 43,000 per kg. Kusuma added that not many cattle have been sold recently as most of the evacuees who returned home at the end of October when the alert level decreased, did not want to purchase cattle given that the condition of the Mount Agung remained uncertain. Between September 23rd and December 2nd, a total of 10,235 head of cattle have been evacuated from the danger zone from a total of approximately 14,000. Evacuated livestock consist of: 8,511 cows (mostly female and young calves as well as sires that are not for sale), 1,011 goats and 713 pigs. There are 16 different animal shelters located in 5 districts where 2, 711 animals are being kept safe. Klungkung is sheltering 94 heads of livestock, Buleleleng 1, 244, Gianyar 133, Bangli 17 and Karangasem’s safe zone also a an animal shelter where 1, 230 head of livestock are being kept. The livestock are not only accommodated but also provided with feed. Recent data shows that remaining fed stocks consist of 229 tons of concentrate, 15,750 kg of straw, 50.5 tons of forage (HPT), 5 tons of other forage, 46.940 kg of silage and 59 tons of sugar cane shoots. China suspends Many airlines not serving all their flights flights from Bali to China due to volcanic ash - report Though airport operating normally
SHANGHAI - China’s aviation authority has suspended all flights from the Indonesian holiday island of Bali to Chinese cities until the threat of volcanic ash clears, the state-run People’s Daily newspaper reported on Monday. Clouds of volcanic ash from Bali’s erupting Mount Agung volcano disrupted flights to and from the island’s airport last week, stranding many thousands of tourists.
Flights began resuming when the airport reopened on Wednesday, after the wind changed and blew the ash away from flight paths. Individual airlines make their own decisions on whether to operate. Australia’s Jetstar resumed flying tourists in to Bali on Monday, while Virgin Australia Holdings Ltd said it planned to do so on Tuesday. Despite the resumption of some services, China’s aviation authority was stopping any more flights after the return on Monday of the last charter flight, bringing to 15,237 the number of stranded Chinese tourists brought home, the People’s Daily newspaper said on its Twitter page. “China’s aviation authority has suspended all flights from Bali to Chinese cities until volcanic ash threat clears,” it said. China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines,
which stopped flying new tourists into Bali last week, told Reuters that any resumption of flights would depend on the situation. They declined to comment on the reported directive from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). The CAAC did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment. China Southern, which flies to Bali from the cities of Shenzhen and Guangzhou, said in an email that “due to volcanic activity in the area, the local airport and associated routes are not airworthy so flights on these two routes have been cancelled in the near term”. China has overtaken Australia this year as the biggest source of international visitors to Bali, representing about a quarter of the 4.9 million arrivals from January to September, according to industry statistics. Airlines avoid flying through volcanic ash as it can damage aircraft engines, clogging fuel and cooling systems, hampering pilot visibility and even causing engine failure. Sutopo Purwo Nugroh, a spokesman for Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency, said on Twitter that Mount Agung was no longer spewing ash but just white smoke that reached a height of 1,000 metres early on Monday.(rtr)

MANGUPURA - Although Ngurah Rai Airport has been operating normally since November 29 following the temporary closure due to the impact of volcanic ash from Mount Agung, many airlines are still not servicing routes to and from Bali. Based on data released by Ngurah Rai Airport ‘s Angkasa Pura I (AP I) on Sunday (Dec. 3), 12 domestic departures, 10 domestic arrivals, 17 international departures and 18 international arrivals are still not running. According to Section Head of Communication and Legal Affairs for Ngurah Rai Airport, Arie Ahsanurrohim, flight cancellations are determined by each airline based on operational considerations. Ngurah Rai Airport itself is operating nor-
mally. “ The number of flights that are still cancelled are not due to the airport being closed but due to the policies of the different airlines”, he explained. Head of the Airport Authority for Region IV of Bali-Nusa Tenggara, Herson, explained that the airlines cancelled their flights because so many passengers had cancelled their reservations – not because of the threat of ash. It is considered safe to fly in Bali because the ash form Mount Agung has been cleared by heavy rains. “However if there are indications of further eruptions, certainly we will check with information from the National Weather Service (BMKG) and Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Darwin”, he said. Two reason why there is no smoke coming out of Mount Agung
AMLAPURA - According to the Central for Volcanology and Disaster Mitigation Agency (PVMBG) there are two reasons why there is no a 1,500 -2,000 meter high puff of smoke coming from Mount Agung. Subdivision Head of Volcanic Mitigation for Eastern Region, Dedy Kamil Syahbana, said on Sunday (Dec. 3) that starting on Saturday (Dec. 2) at 19:00 only a bit of smoke was observed from the Rendang station. Seismicity is also low and the concentration of sulfuric gas (SO2) measured that afternoon dropped dramatically (20 times lower) compared to the eruption phase between November 26-27. It is possible that the the speed of the magma rising to the surface has diminished due to loss of energy as magmatic gas diminished after the last eruption, bringing equilibrium. However there is also the possibility that there is a block in the magma pipe caused by cold or hardened lava obstructing the fluid magma. “If the first possibility it the case, then the likelihood of an eruption will decrease because magma has lost mobility. If the second possibility is the case, the potential for an eruption increases as the magma pressures increases. If the strength of the lava covering up the magma exit is less that the pressure pressure accumulating beneath, then an eruption will occur’ said Devy Syahnana. In the case of a blocked magma exit passage, the volcano could remain quite for a long time but
with pressure building and eruption would be more explosive. IN the 1963 eruption, there a quite period of about 2 weeks before a major eruption that reached a height of about 23 kilometers. If the quite period is short then there is not a lot of pressure built up and an eruption would be similar to or less explosive than the one in 1963. “Volcanology must be approached probabilistically not deterministically. An element of uncertainty should always be included. Although we can explain some possibilities, Mount Aging has its own plans that may not include the above possibilities”, said Until now, volcanology has not yet been approached by a deterministic (definite) method considering it is a science approached with probabilistic (possibility) methods, where an element of uncertainty should always be included. Billy Bush: It was Trump’s voice on “Access Hollywood” tape WASHINGTON - Former NBC television host Billy Bush accused U.S. President Donald Trump of “indulging in some revisionist history” for reportedly telling allies it was not his voice making lewd remarks as the men waited to film a segment for “Access Hollywood” in 2005. “He said it. ‘Grab ’em by the pussy,’” Bush wrote in an editorial published in the New York Times on Sunday. The New York Times reported last month that Trump has been privately telling aides and allies, including at least one U.S. senator, that the voice on the recording was not his. That would be a reversal from his immediate acknowledgement of responsibility after the tape surfaced weeks ahead of the 2016 presidential election. Trump said: “I said it, I was wrong, and I apologize.” Reuters has not been able to verify the Times report that he has been privately telling allies a different story. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Bush’s remarks. But White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders played down the Times report at a White House briefing on Nov. 27. “ T h e P r e s i dent hasn’t changed his position. I think if anything that the president questions, it’s the media’s reporting on that accuracy,” Sanders said. ‘Coco’ Repeats as Box Office Winner With $26.1 Million
LOS ANGELES - Disney-Pixar’s animated comedy “Coco” easily repeated as the winner of the North American box office with a solid $26.1 million at 3,987 locations during a moderate weekend. The third weekend of Warner Bros.-DC Entertainment’s “Justice League” finished second with $16.7 million at 3,820 sites, with the superhero tentpole dropping 60%. Lionsgate’s “Wonder” continued to perform well with $12.5 million at 3,449 venues to come in third followed by Disney-Marvel’s fifth frame of “Thor: Ragnarok” with $9.7 million at 3,148 sites, the fourth weekend of Paramount’s “Daddy’s Home 2” with $7 million at 3,403 venues and Fox’s fourth weekend of “Murder on the Orient Express” with $6.7 million at 3,201 screens. Awards contenders “Lady Bird” and “Three Billboards Outside
Ebbing, Missouri” tied for seventh place with $4.5 million each. A24’s “Lady Bird” expanded by 403 sites to 1,194 and Fox Searchlight’s “Three Billboards” doubled its run to 1,430 screens. The major studios opted to rely on holdovers during the session and held off on any wide openings. A24 generated strong performance from its limited launch of James Franco’s “The Disaster Artist” with $1.2 million at 19 locations for a $64,254 per screen average. Fox Searchlight’s “The Shape of Water” saw an impressive $166,800 at two theaters and Woody Allen’s “Wonder Wheel” debuted with a
solid $140,555 at five sites through Amazon. Sony Classics’ second weekend of “Call Me By Your Name” posted a stellar $281,280 at four screens for a 10-day total of $908,175. It won best feature at the Gotham Independent Film Awards on Nov. 27. “Coco” has now taken in $108.7 million in its first 12 days following a 47% decline from its opening. The film, based on the traditions surrounding the Day of the Dead holiday in Mexico, centers on a 12-year-old boy who dreams of becoming a musician. The film has been embraced by critics with a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Disney’s “Moana” performed slightly better during the same period last year with $119.8 million after 12 days. (rtr)

Scientists listen for clues about Bali volcano’s next big eruption
This week, the Mount Agung volcano on the island of Bali in Indonesia erupted for the first time in more than 50 years. Residents are fleeing to neighbouring islands, tourists are scrambling to find flights home and the tiny island is on edge. Volcanologists are trying to gather as much data as possible to help planners, residents and first responders best prepare for any possible further eruptions. Volcanoes erupt because of a change in pressure in the magma near the Earth’s crust. The magma is molten rock that forms deep under the Earth’s surface, about 30 to 50 kilometres down, where the crust meets the Earth’s mantle. It is under extreme pressure and temperature so the rocks can melt. That pressure needs to be relieved at routine intervals and takes the path of least resistance – that path is through fissures between the tectonic plates of the Earth’s crust. Canadian volcanologist Julie Roberge from the Instituto Technica Nationale in Mexico City
explains it this way: “So an analogy for this is a bottle of soda. So, you know, if you leave it on the table, it has a fixed pressure and there’s gas dissolved in your Coke, Sprite or whatever. But when you move the bottle, what happens is that these bubbles are coming out and they want to come out of the bottle. A volcano is the exact same thing. So what happened to your bottle of soda, if you leave the cap on, versus if you take the cap off, is the difference between an eruption where the lava will just flow... versus it will explode like Agung.” So what drives the lava upwards
and out of the cone of the volcano is gas pressure that needs to vent. In the case of Mount Agung, it sits in the so-called Ring of Fire that rims Japan and most of Asia, including Indonesia. This area of the world is a subduction zone. The oceanic plate is diving below the continental tectonic plate and that creates a weak point in the Earth’s crust. When one tectonic plate, the oceanic plate of the eastern Pacific, goes down below the continental plate, the water rises and that lowers the melting temperature of the rock above. This forms magma and
the magma is less dense than the surrounding rock. It rises like the wax in a lava lamp and the pressure builds… and it needs to be relieved. So, ultimately, it’s small earthquakes and natural shifts in the tectonic plates that are creating this pressurized chamber that needs to vent. The first indication is always the seismic activity. These are often murmurs of activity deep below the surface. They aren’t felt as earthquakes because they are too deep or too subtle, but seismologists watch every shift and groan of the tectonic plates with interest. Some of the seismic monitoring is global scale. One earthquake over in Mexico, for instance, means the rest of the tectonic plates need to ease the strain of the new posi-
tion and they shift — often in ways we don’t completely understand of course, but it’s an indicator that seismologists need to be alert. Other seismic data is obtained right at the site of the volcano. When it comes to Mount Agung in Bali, there have been up to 600 seismic events per day as the volcano prepares for something.
