STOCKHOLM – Robert Edwards of Britain won the 2010 Nobel Prize in medicine on Monday for developing in-vitro fertilization, a breakthrough that ignited heated controversy in the 1970s but has helped millions of infertile couples since then have children. Edwards, an 85-year-old professor emeritus at the University of Cambridge, started working on IVF as early as the 1950s. He developed the technique — in which
egg cells are removed from a woman, fertilized outside her body and then implanted into the womb — together with British gynecologist surgeon Patrick Steptoe, who died in 1988.

Bali News Early detection to hormonal disorders Avoid child from mental disability Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Government through department of health is now promoting a program named New Born Screening. It is an early detection of diseases that are fatal or in hereditary on the newborn infant so that later on can be prevented through therapy and medication. The New Born Screening program has been applied to several hospitals in Bali, one of which is to Wangaya Hospital. According to I Wayan Retayasa, one of the perinatologists in Wangaya Hospital, the New Born Screening had been conducted in Wangaya Hospital since two years ago. The screening was performed by detecting the formation of congenital hypothyroidism or abnormal hormone produced by the thyroid gland. By inspecting congenital hypothyroidism since the baby was born, it could prevent the occurrence of mental disorders and the abnormal growth of the baby. “Congenital hypothyroidism is a thyroid hormonal formation disorder which can cause stunted growth and brain development,” said Retayasa. Rate of the congenital hypothyroidism incidence was about 1 in 4,000 births. Then, how to do this early detection? According to Retayasa, the phases of screening were done by taking blood samples of the babies concerned and then sent to Jakarta for further examination. If the result indicated any interference on the thyroid hormonal formation, then the baby would get the treatment like hormonal administration. “By early therapy and medication, the hormonal formation disorders can be treated so that the growth and brain development of children will be bet-
ter,” he said. In Indonesia, the New Born Screening examination is merely intended to detect congenital hypothyroid. “Actually there are many screening examinations such as galactosemia, congenital adrenal hyperplasia up to toxoplasmosis. However, up to this time in Indonesia can only be performed one inspection namely congenital hypothyroidism,” said Retayasa. According to him, to conduct the screening examination was indeed entailed some mass requirements such as the availability of inspection facility in the laboratory up to its medication. “So, it will be useless if the patient is checked without the availability of medication,” explained Retayasa, Nevertheless, he expected the New Born Screening in Indonesia could continue to grow so that the abnormalities occurred to children could be more widely known and prevented. Snorkeling, Chinese Tourist Died After snorkeling in Nusa Lembongan, a Chinese tourist, Peng Tao (60) died on Sunday (3/ 10). According to information collected by the Bali Post, Tao was staying in one of the hotels in Kuta was unconscious after the bounty ship he was on landing in Tanjung Benoa. Several hours before it, Tao
spent some time snorkeling in Nusa Lembingan Island, Klungkung. When unconscious, Tao was helped by Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) workers and brought to Sanglah Hospital. Yet Tao died on the journey there and was suspected have died due to a heart attack. Tao’s body is planned to be sent back to China. (san)

Pick up car carrying the illegal diesel oil is confiscated by South Denpasar Police
Hundreds of liters of subsidized diesel oil secured by police, Its case is impressed to be covered up Denpasar (Bali Post)—
The ranks of criminal investigation police (Reskrim) of South Denpasar Police managed to secure the subsidized diesel fuel on Friday (Oct 1) afternoon. Hundreds of liters of the diesel fuel were alleged not to be completed by legal documents. However, disclosure of the case gave impression if it was covered up. It was known that a number of officers of the South Denpasar Police were not willing to give any information when reporters wanted to confirm the case. Based on information in the field, the disclosure of diesel smuggling case took place in the area of Serangan Island. Previously, the members of mobile detective unit (Buser) of South Denpasar Police received information there would be a pick-up truck carrying illegal diesel fuel to Serangan. Immediately, the information was followed up by doing surveillance. On Friday afternoon, a pickup with plate license DK 9611 EM passed at the scene.
Officers immediately made an interception and of course the driver was asked to present his documents. The driver with unknown identity could not present a valid document. On that account, he was seized along with the evidence to Headquarters of South Denpasar Police. “Right now, the driver is being checked by the investigators. Then, evidence in the form of hundreds of liters of diesel fuel remained to be secured,” said a source in the police, Sunday (Oct 3). The source who did not want his name to be published admitted he did not know exactly how many liters of diesel fuel secured by the South Denpasar Police were. Obviously, such diesel fuel was stored in the 30 -liter jerry cans and transported by L-300 pick-up truck. Allegedly, the subsidized diesel fuel would be sold to industry and fishing boats. However, police managed to secure it first. Based on monitoring of Bali Post in South Denpasar Police last
Sunday, the pickup truck conveying the diesel fuel was parked in front of the Criminal Investigation Police of South Denpasar. The car conveyed several jerry cans whose contents were known as diesel fuel. When this newspaper asked the local official, the pickup truck conveying the diesel fuel was a catch belong to the member of mobile detective unit. “He (the driver) was just captured two days ago. Now, he is still being examined by the investigators,” remarked one of the officers. Well, when reporters would like to take pictures of the evidence, one of the officers attempted to ban. “Sorry, please do not take a picture. If you wish, ask permission first to the chief of subdistrict police,” he exclaimed. This matter indicated the arrest was covered up. Disadvantaged Residents Disappointed Fixing House in Bukti and Tunjung Cancelled Singaraja (Bali Post) –
Disadvantaged residents of Bukti and Tunjung Villages, Kubutambahan Sub district, admitted disappointed with the fixing houses program on that villages from Bali Province Government were cancelled without any clear reasoning. When actually workers from Bali Province Government and Social Agency of Buleleng Regence have been coming several times to check the two villages and promised to have fixing houses program this year 2010. Although until now it is still not happening. The information collected from several residents in the two villages, last Saturday (2/10) and Sunday (3/10) stated the program was promised to Bukti Village as much as 70 units and in Tunjung Village 36 units. The total was collected by the workers from the social agency that looked over the houses condition on location. After waiting for a long time, the program did not happen. Actually, residents have been preparing land also some building materials such as stones to support this program. Also for those disadvantaged residents who don’t have lands was forced to buy their neighbors lands in credits so they can get help from this program. “Because the rule to get a fixing is to have their own land, so I have to buy my neighbor land by crediting it,” says a Tunjung resident. With their disappointment, residents kept asking the village head although the head also admitted did not know why the help was cancelled. Information received from a resident mentioned that this program was moved abruptly to villages in Gerokgak Sub district. Village Head of Tunjung Village, Ketut Kardita, when confirmed, clarified there have been these complain.
He also clarified that these disadvantaged residents very hoped of this help from the program and that’s why they bought lands and prepared some materials together, “I actually don’t know the reason why this help hasn’t come yet. The same thing happened at Bukti Village.” What’s weird, not long a go a worker from Bali Social Agency came back to check the houses in Tunjung Village. As information from the workers, the program will be realized in the year 2011 budget. Although in the newest checkings, the help will be only given to 15 units, much less than the 36 units, “What’s much weirder, from the newest checking the residents in Dusun Tonggak won’t get any help when actually it’s the most disadvantaged one in Tunjung Village.” For that, Kardita suggested that the help should be added to the five units in Dusun Tonggak. According to him, the worker agreed so there will be 20 units helped in this village. If all granted, Kardita still admitting worried as there still 16 houses that are on the data have been cancelled to be helped, “I still think of those cancelled ones, when actually their conditions are disadvantaged too.” (kmb15)
Two building workers burglarize property of foreigner Gianyar (Bali Post)—
Two construction workers, namely Mohamad Mukhlisin alias Muklis, 18, and Triyono alias Turi, 30, from Bayuwangi, East Java, stealing the property of foreigner, Frank Williams, in a museum at Tengkulak Hamlet, Kemenuh, Sukawati, Gianyar, was successfully arrested on Sunday (Oct 3). Both perpetrators were arrested at his home in Bayuwangi after they were pursued by the team of mobile detective unit of Sukawati. Aside from the two perpetrators, police could also secure a fence of stolen goods in Banyuwangi, namely Effendi alias Bondet, 22. Now, the three gang members getting involved in the theft of foreigner’s property had crouched behind the bars of Sukawati Police. Information collected mentioned that both theft perpetrators previously worked in the residence of the victim. Frank who has a museum would like to paint and repair his building. Armed with the characteristics and identity on the origin of the perpetrators, officers of the Sukawati Police had committed a pursuit since a few days to Bayuwangi. Finally they managed to uncover the syndicate of theft perpetrators that after stealing they hid in Bayuwangi. The theft perpetrators just arrived in Sukawati at early days on Sunday. Pick-Pocket Specialist Group Revealed By Police Four Robbers Underage Denpasar (Bali Post) –

pick-pocket actors. “The five robbers are intensively investigated. For the four underage robbers, they will be suited with the Child Protection Law,” Head of Kuta Police, Adjunct Police Commissioner I Gede Ganefo, SH, MH last Sunday (3/10). The former Head of South Denpasar Police revealed this kind of groups from Karangasem is a new modus. The robbers divided their works by having these under age kids who are faking as beggars come up to the victim. Then robber Depin will come close to victim and take its wallet from the pocket. As he got it, the wallet was then thrown to the kids. This was done as if the evidence was not on him so it won’t be known. The evidence will be brought away
by the four kids. Luckily at that time victim knew and fast attack troops were also around, so Depin was captured and brought to the Kuta Police Department to be investigated. Depin tried to decline as he said that the evidence was not on him. Yet other fast attack troops managed to capture the four kids who got the evidence. Then Depin couldn’t do more and admitted his actions, “These robbers are sly also with this modus. Yet robbers just admitted that they have done it once. We will develop this case.” More over, the wallet that was picked has AUD 700. If it’s converted it reaches IDR 5 Million. The evidence is now saved and the five robbers are jailed. (kmb21)

SEOUL – North Korea’s young heir apparent accompanied his father Kim Jong-Il on two visits to China this year in preparation for an eventual power transfer, a report said Monday. The leader’s youngest son behaved like a bodyguard to his ailing father during the trips in May and August and travelled under an assumed name, Yonhap news agency quoted sources on the North as saying. Kim Jong-Un, believed aged about 27, apparently cemented his position as heir when he was appointed four-star general and given key party posts during last week’s rare communist party meeting. His official photo was published in state media for the first time. Analysts had speculated that Kim Jong-Il’s visit in August was aimed at garnering support for the hereditary power succession from China, the impoverished North’s sole major ally and economic lifeline. “Jong-Un, dressed in a suit, acted as if he was a bodyguard and accompanied Kim Jong-Il closely,” Yonhap quoted a source as saying, adding the trip would be used to showcase his loyalty to his father. But the young protege did not attend key meetings with senior Beijing officials such as the meetings in May and August between Kim Jong-Il and Chinese President Hu Jintao, said the source. South Korea’s National Intelligence Service said it could not confirm the report. A North Korean ruling party delegation visited Beijing late last week in an apparent move to brief Chinese officials on the party meeting, the largest for 30 years. Hu on Saturday pledged to strengthen ties with the new leadership in North Korea, saying Beijing would work with them to “promote and expand cooperation” and “strengthen communication” on regional and international issues. “Now with Kim Jong-Un becoming the de facto next leader, he will soon visit China just like Kim Jong-Il did in the past,” said the source quoted by Yonhap. SARAJEVO – The son of Bosnia’s wartime Muslim leader was set to become one of its three presidents, election results showed on Monday, and analysts said he seemed ready to work with other ethnic groups in the divided country. The election, watched by the West for signs whether Bosnia will move toward the EU and NATO or sink deeper into stagnation, was marred when officials said they would probe possible fraud in voting for the Serb presidency member. Since the last election in 2006, mistrust has deepened between nationalist Croat, Serb and Muslim leaders, and political gaps have widened between the country’s two autonomous regions, the Muslim-Croat federation and the Serb Republic. The late wartime President Alija Izetbegovic’s son Bakir, seen as more prepared to work with other ethnic groups than incumbent Haris Silajdzic, led the race for the presidency’s Mus-
lim seat with more than 80 percent of Sunday’s votes counted. “We are going to stabilize the situation in Bosnia and to bring a better future to the citizens of Bosnia,” Izetbegovic told Reuters Television. “This means the peace, better conditions for development of economy and employment.” According to early returns and party claims, the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD) of Milorad Dodik, who threatened secession from Bosnia during the election campaign, was far ahead in the Serb half of the Balkan country. Fiji opposition head freed, vows to fight charges AFP
SUVA – Fiji opposition leader Mahendra Chaudhry vowed to fight charges brought by the Pacific nation’s military regime Monday after being released on bail following more than three days in custody. Chaudhry, a former prime minister of Fiji, and five other men were arrested on Friday and accused of staging an illegal assembly at rural Rakiraki, in a development regional power Australia described as very concerning. “All of us have been bailed out and the case goes back to court on Wednesday,” Chaudhry told AFP after appearing in court accused of breaking emergency laws that pro-
hibit public meetings. Chaudhry said he was not required to enter a plea but intended to fight the allegations. “The charge as it was read out in the court is that we assembled at one of the accused’s residences unlawfully,” he said. “We’ll certainly be defending ourselves. We had no unlawful purpose in mind.” Chaudhry became Fiji’s first ethnic Indian leader when elected prime minister in 1999. He was overthrown a year later in a coup led by nationalist George Speight. As leader of the Fiji Labour party, he is one of the main opposition voices in Fiji, where the media are heavily censored and political par-
ties cannot issue statements seen as destabilising the military regime. In July, Chaudhry appeared in court on a raft of charges unrelated to his latest alleged offence, including money laundering and tax evasion. He has denied any wrongdoing. Asked if he was being targeted by the regime of Fiji’s self-appointed military ruler Voreqe Bainimarama, Chaudhry replied: “I’d rather not answer that at the moment.” Bainimarama, who seized power in a 2006 coup, imposed emergency regulations that ban public meetings when he abrogated the constitution in April last year, prompting condemnation from human rights groups.
Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd said he was concerned at Chaudhry’s detention and Canberra believed the emergency laws used to arrest him were an abuse of power. “The government has consistently expressed concern about the use of the public emergency regulations by the regime and the abuse of the rule of law... (we) will continue to monitor the situation closely,” a spokeswoman for Rudd said. Chaudhry’s arrest came in a rural area dominated by the sugar industry, once a mainstay of Fiji’s economy, which has collapsed following a failed attempt by Bainimarama’s cash-strapped government to modernise crushing mills.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. MONTERREY, Mexico – An explosion at a plaza in northeastern Mexico injured 15 people, an attack authorities blamed Sunday on drug cartels targeting the civilian population to cause chaos. Police believe the attackers threw a grenade Saturday night at the main square in the town of Guadalupe, but were still trying to confirm the type of explosive, said Adrian de la Garza, the director of the investigations agency of Nuevo Leon, where the town is located. Six children, the youngest 3 years old, were among the injured, said Francisco Gonzalez, the state deputy health director. He said the injuries were not life-threatening, and most of the victims had returned home from the hospital. It was the fourth such attack in two days in the area around the city of Monterrey, which has been reeling from a turf war between the Gulf and Zetas drug gangs. On Friday night, three separate grenade attacks happened: near the federal courts, outside a prison and near the U.S. Consulate in Monterrey. A security guard was injured in the attack at the courts. Nuevo Leon Attorney General Alejandro Garza y Garza said they may be revenge for recent operations against drug traffickers. He did not specify which ones, but 22 suspected drug gang members were killed in a Sept. 15 shootout with soldiers in Ciudad Mier, another town in Nuevo Leon. Last
week, marines captured 30 suspected Gulf cartel members in Tamaulipas state, which borders Nuevo Leon. “We believe this might have been an attack against the civilian population. They are trying to create chaos and anxiety in the population,” Garza y Garza said. Soldiers arrested eight suspected Zetas members in Guadalupe early Sunday, although the operation appeared unrelated to the attack on the plaza. The soldiers were patrolling the town when they saw three cars brake suddenly and try to reverse and flee, according to the Defense Department statement. Although drug gangs frequently hurl grenades at police headquarters and government installations, they rarely target crowds of bystanders. KUPANG - East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) provincial administration will allocate Rp400 million in 2011 to promote the Komodo dragon as one of the 28 official finalists in the New7Wonders of Nature. NTT Culture and Tourism Office spokesman Ulbadus Gogi said here on Monday that the funds would be spent on the procurement of information technology equipment to support to promotion of the Komodo dragon. “There is no special fund allocation this year for the Komodo dragon promotion but in 2011 we will allocate Rp400 million,” Ulbadus Gogi said.

It is the largest living species of lizard, some reaching a length of up to 3 meters and weighing around 70 kilograms. Although the Komodo dragons normally eat carrion, they will also hunt and ambush their prey including invertebrates, birds, and mammals.
President to propose candidate for police chief before Dutch visit Antara
JAKARTA - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will submit the name of nominee for national police chief to the House of Representatives (DPR) before he starts his five-day state visit to The Netherlands on Tuesday, a minister said. “Let’s wait for (a further statement) from him before he leaves for The Netherlands,” Minister/State Secretary Sudi Silalahi said prior to a plenary Cabinet meeting at the presidential office here on Monday. A passenger train heading to Surabaya smashed into the rear carriages of a Semarang-bound train waiting at a station platform in Petarukan Pemalang, Central Java province, on Saturday, officers at the scene said. Mohammed Khalik Mustofa, who drove the Surabaya-bound train, was arrested Sunday for alleged “negligence which led to deaths”, his lawyer Tugiman told reporters. “Our client has been made a suspect by the police. We’ll wait for further developments,” he said. Nine people are being questioned by police, including the train station head and both drivers, Kompas.com news website reported. Police said 36 people were killed and national railway operator spokesman Sugeng Priyono said 36 people were injured, five of them seriously. “Most of those hospitalised had light injuries. Victims will be compensated,” he said, adding that the wrecked trains had been removed from the railway tracks and that the “situation is back to normal”. Rescuers were struggling to get to the areas. “It’s hard to reach the affected area as many trees have fallen down and blocked the roads,” he said. A local official said that hundreds of people had been displaced and sought refuge in hilly areas. “Many children went missing,” district spokeswoman Titi Ningsih Winzer said, quoted by the Kompas news website. DENPASAR - Australia remained the biggest source of foreign tourists visiting Bali in the first eight months of 2010, an official said. A total of 399,988 Australians visited the resort island in the year to August 2010, up 47.25 percent from a year earlier, head of the Bali provincial statistics office Ida Komang Wisnu said. Most of the Australian tourists came to Bali by direct flights from their country and only 8,047 of them by cruise liners, he said. The Australian tourists were made up of 23.83 percent of the overall tourist arrivals in Bali in the January-August 2010 period reaching 1,678,170, he said. The figure represented a 9.11 percent increase compared to the same period last year, he said. He said the number of tourist arrivals from six of the top ten sources of foreign tourists rose significantly while that of the other four declined.
The number of tourists from China rose 2.79 percent to 139,501 from 135,710, Taiwan 9.94 percent to 88,448 from 80,452, Britain 6.49 percent to 62,358 from 58,560, Germany 7.11 percent to 54,410 from 50,800, and Singapore 54.96 percent to 54,147 from 34,943. There was one served yajemana or chief of ceremony, namely the deceased’s spiritual teacher or pedanda nabe. Then, ritual on the Bade tower was officiated by Ida Pedanda Griya Sakti Nyalian Klungkung and Ida Pedanda Selat Kanginan Bangli. The guiding higher priest was Ida Pedanda Sidemen from Tembuku, while prayer on psalmodic pavilion was chaired by Ida Pedanda Istri Griya Pesraman Bukit Bangli with Ida Pedanda Istri from Geriya Siladan Tengah. A Playground of Birds and Hikers Having a promenade or watching birds at verdant rice field in Bali is very exciting. Aside from seeing nice rice terrace and beautiful birds, you may also encounter farmers being absorbed in completing their activities. As in the household, they also organize various rituals for their rice from the very beginning of land cultivation until by the harvest. After planting rice, there are series of activities to maintain their paddies. As a socio-religious organization, subak community treats their paddy as human by providing them with life-cycle rituals. After cleaning up the weeds, farmers will perform ngulapin to regain the spirit or consciousness of paddies. Then, 42 days after the kick-off ritual (only one member selected to do this), they organize collective ritual at subak temple resumed with one-day of silence or nyepi. During which, no one may do activities in the rice field. When the paddy has got ‘pregnant’ or is going to bloom, farmer will perform miseh ritual. Striking content of this oblation is assorted sour fruits and small penjor (bamboo log or midrib of sugar palm) installed adjacent to the upstream shrine. As on human, the sour fruits mean to strengthen the pregnancy and expected the entire grains could produce rice. When the rice turns yellow, it is time for
the last ritual mabiyukukung marked with the use of basket made of plaited green coconut leaf. This ritual is resumed with the selection of rice known as Dewa Nini. By and large, it amounts to a handful of rice stalk that will be given offering in post-harvest ritual at rice granary. In technical matters, the subak regularly checks their water divider or temuku before entering the new planting season. Due to natural process and water flows, its condition may have changed. Subak administrators will calibrate the measurement of temuku (if made of wooden log) pursuant to the record book of water subscription. Measurement unit of water subscription is called tektek. This measurement is proportional to the extent of rice field so there will be no rice field having surplus of water or on the contrary. For instance, one hectare of land in the upper stream may need ½ tektek, while at downstream will need 1 tektek. This happens due to disparity of water discharge. Other than water subscription, there is also mutual assistance work. Let’s assume the subscription rate is IDR 10,000 per tektek. If a farmer subscribes for 1 tektek and he attends the mutual works, he is unnecessary to pay. However, when he uses more than 1 tektek he should pay the excess pursuant to the rate.
In relation to water subscription, there are also some penalties. If a subak member cannot meet the time limit of planting rice or proven to have stolen water, his water subscription for the ongoing planting season will be terminated or just imposed with particular fines. Some practices may slightly vary from one subak to another. Meanwhile, if you happen to see a sign of bamboo stem or tree branch plugged onto the bund of rice field and tied with some grasses near its upper end it is called sawen. It is used to convey a prohibition. Probably, it prohibits others from mowing grass as farmer just sprayed the paddy or the grass itself will be cut by its owner. Or if it is plugged on the clean up area of rice field, it stands for that people may not step foot into it to take snail or eel at night. Wan Cake: Snack along the Harvest Season Before the presence of new hybrid rice in Bali, local farmers only harvest once a year for tahun variety and twice a year for cicih variety. Both are local varieties where to harvest it farmers cut the stalk one by one using rice knife or anggapan.
Meanwhile, one of the favorite snacks during the harvest time was wan. It is a snack made of young white sticky rice or ketan that usually did not get mature simultaneously. Its cake resembles uli but its color is naturally green as it does not grow perfectly mature yet. Uniquely, it was usually wrapped by flower sheath of areca nut.
Ingredient: 500gram fresh young white sticky rice, 2 cup of grated coconut, ½ tsp salt, 100gr sugar, 1 glass of coconut water and banana leaf or sheath of areca nut for wrapping.
Method: ·
Roast the young white sticky rice until
cooked (dry and crispy). Pound them in stone mortar or the like to take out their outer husks and then sieved until they are thoroughly clean. ·
Mix the young sticky rice with sugar, grated
coconut, salt, and coconut water. Stir and press them well until smooth and mellow. ·
Wrap the batter by banana leaf or sheath of

BAGHDAD - Iraq on Monday announced new “extractable” proven crude oil reserves of 143.1 billion barrels, the third-highest level of reserves in the world by OPEC figures. “Iraq’s oil reserves which are extractable are 143.1 billion barrels,” Oil Minister Hussein al-Shahristani told a news conference in Baghdad. Shahristani said 71 percent of those reserves were concentrated in the south of the country, 20 percent in the north and nine percent in the centre. The new figure represents a dramatic rise from previously announced known reserves of 115 billion barrels, and means Iraq leapfrogs Iran into third place in terms of proven reserves, according to data released by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). It also provides a major boost to the country’s hopes of rebuilding its battered economy and dated infrastructure, crippled by decades of conflict and sanctions. Iraq currently produces about 2.4 million barrels of oil per day, but last year awarded contracts with foreign energy firms to exploit 10 oilfields in the hopes of upping its production as much as five-fold. The country depends on oil exports for 95 percent of government revenue. It is also seeking to increase its production of gas, with a public auction slated for October 20 where international companies can bid for the rights to exploit three gas fields.

LONDON - Nobel laureate economist Joseph Stiglitz has warned a “wave of austerity” is sweeping across Europe that could trigger a new recession, in comments published in a newspaper Sunday. Stiglitz, who won the Nobel Prize for economics in 2001, also said the future of the euro was in doubt and raised the prospect that speculators may soon target Spain, which is struggling to recover from a long downturn. “The worry is that there is a wave of austerity building throughout Europe and even hitting America’s shores,” according to Stiglitz in extracts from an updated edition of his book, “Freefall”, published in the Sunday Telegraph. “As so many countries cut back on spending prematurely, global aggregate demand will be lowered and growth will slow — even perhaps leading to a double-dip recession. “America may have caused the global recession but Europe is now responding in kind.” He described the euro as “an experiment that may now be faltering” and said without a major institutional overhaul its 16 member states should consider giving up on the currency. “It is perhaps better to admit failure and move on than to extract a high price in unemployment and human suffering,” he said. On Spain, Stiglitz — a one-time economic adviser to former US president Bill Clinton — cautioned deep spending cuts being introduced could prompt the country’s economy to slow down and enter a “death spiral”. “Spain may be entering the kind of death spiral that afflicted Argentina just a decade ago,” said the economist. “At present, Spain has not been attacked by speculators, but it may be only a matter of time.”
In a rare and wide-ranging interview with CNN, Wen touched on what until recently have been taboo subjects in Beijing and sought to brush aside international criticisms, insisting China’s communist leaders were adapting. “I do have worry for the management of inflation expectations in China,” Wen told CNN’s “Fareed Zakaria GPS” program. “And that is something that I have been trying very hard to manage appropriately and well, because I believe corruption and inflation will have an adverse impact on stability of power in our country.” In mid-September, Beijing admitted that consumer inflation had risen at the fastest pace in nearly two years in August, as severe floods and unusually hot weather destroyed crops, driving up food prices. The figure marked the 10th straight month that the consumer price index, a key measure of inflation, had risen. Wen also acknowledged the difficulties of balancing the desires of China’s 1.3 billion people with the need to maintain order across the vast, ethnically diverse country. “I believe freedom of speech is indispensable for any country, a country in the course of development and a country that has become strong,” Wen told the network. “I believe, I and all the Chinese people have such a conviction, that China will make continuous progress and the people’s wishes
for and needs for democracy and freedom are irresistible,” Wen said. He trumpeted the fact that across China there were now some 400 million Internet users and 800 million people with mobile phones. on “high alert” against the possibility of any economic bubble. Global ratings agency Fitch Ratings warned in mid-September that China faces a potential “hangover” from the government’s massive spending spree. Wen acknowledged Sunday that the implementation of the stimulus package meant “there are fiscal and financial risks at the level of local governments. We have some financing vehicles of local governments. They have some debts.” One of the key challenges now facing his country was to confront its structural problems, Wen said. “I was one of the first ones to argue that our economic development still lacks balance, coordination and sustainability,” he told CNN. Turning to a row with the United States over the yuan, accused here of being deliberately undervalued, Wen accused US lawmakers of politicizing the issue saying a trade surplus was natural at his country’s stage of development. “China does not pursue a trade surplus,” Wen said. “Some people in the United States, in particular some in the US Congress, do not know fully about China. Court decides who owes “Nash” money to Don Johnson

A judge ruled late Thursday that it was Cuban and Wagner’s 2929, along with Rysher Entertainment and investment firm Qualia Capital — operated by Amir Malin and Ken Shapiro — that should foot the bill for money owed the actor stemming
from his partial ownership of “Nash,” a TV series he co-created in 1995. Johnson starred with Cheech Marin in the cop show, which aired from 1996 to 2001. Johnson was awarded $23.2 million in July, a sum that was bumped by an additional $28.5 million in September, but it wasn’t clear who was responsible for paying out all that cash. Johnson’s legal squabble essentially was with Rysher, but the entity once owned by Cox Enterprises has changed hands a few times, and it was unclear who has been benefiting from lucrative international reruns of “Nash.” Qualia owns Rysher now, and 2929 owned it from 2001-06, so they are on the hook with Rysher for the money owed Johnson, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Stern said. “‘Nash Bridges’ was my idea,” Johnson said Friday. “Mark Cuban’s company and Qualia took all the profits from the show’s syndication. The Grammy winner would not talk about his arrest last month on suspicion of drug offenses, but said the inspiration for the foundation came in the aftermath of his 2007 arrest on weapons charges. “It’s very, very personally close to our family,” said T.I., who served seven months in prison for the firearms offenses. “And while I was, you know, while I was going through my

So he took the menu of the Plaza Athenee, the flagship three-star restaurant that graces the luxury Parisian hotel, and decided to strip it back to basics — in what he believes may herald a radical new food trend. “I want to remind people of the taste of bread and butter,” Ducasse told AFP over a seven-course tasting session in the kitchens of the five-star hotel, on Paris’ ultra-chic Avenue Montaigne. “The best bread, toasted just so, and served with butter at exactly the right temperature,” he enthused, wolfing down slice after fragrant slice of the thick, crusty bread sourced from one of the capital’s best boulangeries. LONDON – When Chris Carver ran an ultra-marathon in Scotland last year, which challenges athletes to run as far as possible within 24 hours, he ran 140 miles (225 kilometers). Determined to do better in this year’s race, Carver added something extra to his training regime: beetroot juice. For a week before the race, he drank the dark purple juice every day. Last month, Carver won it by running 148 miles (238 kilometers). “The only thing I did differently this year was the beetroot juice,” said Carver, 46, a professional runner based near Leeds, in northern England. He said more exercise would have improved his endurance, but to get the
same result he attributes to the juice — an extra eight miles — it would likely have taken an entire year. Some experts say adding beetroot juice to your diet — like other foods such as cherry juice or milk — could provide a performance boost even beyond the blood, sweat and tears of more training. In two studies conducted at Exeter University on 15 men, Stephen Bailey and colleagues found cyclists who drank a half-liter (about a half-quart) of beetroot juice several hours before setting off were able to ride up to 20 percent longer than those who drank a placebo blackcurrant juice. By examining the cyclists under a scanner that analyzes how much energy is needed for a muscle to contract, Bailey and colleagues discovered
beetroot juice allows cyclists to exercise using less oxygen than normal. “The beetroot juice was effective even without any additional training,” Bailey said. “It reduces the energy requirements on your muscles so you can last longer.” While the beetroot juice was provided free by its manufacturer, Exeter University paid for the research. Bailey said the high nitrate content of beetroot juice is responsible for its athletic benefits. Scientists aren’t exactly sure how it works, but suspect having more nitric oxide in your body, a byproduct of nitrate, helps you exercise with less oxygen. Bailey said the same effects might be possible if people ate more nitrate-rich foods like beetroot, lettuce or spinach.

TOKYO - Feliciano Lopez ruined last year’s US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro’s latest come back game on Monday with a convincing first round victory at the Japan Open. The 29-year-old Spaniard took 16 points in a row at the start of the second set to secure a 6-3, 6-0 victory over the Argentine in just 71 minutes. It was Del Potro’s second match after a wrist injury in January and followed another first-round defeat in the Thailand Open last week. “It’s difficult to come back to play against these kind of players. A lot of them are very good, especially Feliciano on this (fast) surface. But I’m glad to come back,” said Del Potro, who had been sidelined since the Australian Open in January. “I need more time to improve again to play at the same level that I did last year, but it’s very difficult. But
a good thing is it’s getting better. Today, I played sometimes good tennis, sometimes bad.” Del Potro lost his first service game of the first set despite hitting a coupe of aces, but he soon broke back thanks to a Lopez double fault at 15-40. Loeb emotional after home title win Sebastien Loeb said he could not have imagined a more emotional way to clinch his seventh World Rally title than victory in his home region on last weekend’s Rally of France. The event moved from its famous Corsica base to Alsace this year, partly to make it more accessible for spectators than its previous island location, but also meaning that its concluding stages took place in Loeb’s home area. Loeb said before the rally that this prospect made him more nervous, as he feared disappointing the local fans. But he duly claimed his seventh consecutive championship by dominating the event and admitted he was taken aback by the support he received. “For sure it is an incredible feeling, and especially to win,” said Loeb. “When I arrived here, I knew that there was a possibility to win the rally, to win the championship, and all that in my home town. “So it was a great challenge, and also a big pressure, because I knew that everybody was waiting for this here, in the region. There was a lot of support from a lot of people. The feeling was really great. It was incredible. “I was expecting this rally to be popular, but I was very surprised to see so many people for the rally, I could not expect that there would be so many people, everywhere: on stages, on the road sections, wav-
ing in front of their house, in the service park, everywhere. And all that in a very nice atmosphere. I was really happy to see this. “It has been a perfect event, like in Corsica in 2004, when we won both championships at the same time. Here, it is even more special because it is really at home for me.” He admitted that he had been too emotional to drive fast in the final stage, based in his home town of Haguenau. Asked if he had been tearful on the stage, Loeb replied: “A little bit yes, especially when I saw my friends waiting for me after the checkpoint. It was incredible. I was not able to drive fast in that stage. I tried, at the start, and then I said ‘okay, just drive through.’” The huge turn-out of spectators for the event led to constant delays as the officials worked to ensure that the crowds were in safe positions on all the stages. Some drivers criticised the organisation of the rally, but
Citroen team boss Olivier Quesnel said it was a price worth paying. “It was the first time in Alsace, so there were some problems, but we prefer this with plenty of people than a very well organised rally without anybody,” he said. Former world champion Petter Solberg, who finished third, agreed that the atmosphere had been incredible and had nothing but praise for the organisers’ handling of the crowds. “I have never seen anything like this for many years, so much support from the spectators - to Loeb especially, but to all the drivers,” said Solberg. “We would have to go back to Portugal many years ago to see something like this. It was unbelievable, everywhere. This is what we want to have in every rally. “The police have been fantastic; it was the best support from police that I have seen in any rally. The organisation has been very good.”
Alonso braces for ‘pain’ in next races FERNANDO Alonso believes he and Ferrari must brace themselves for some ‘pain’ in the next few races if they are to come out on top in the closely-fought world championship battle. The Spaniard’s triumphs in Italy and Singapore have thrust him firmly into the five-way contest to win the title this year - with his championship chances having looked quite slim earlier in the campaign. But despite Ferrari’s resurgence, Alonso feels that he and his outfit have not yet experienced how tough this title battle is going to get. “I have kept in touch with the team all the time and I know that in Maranello, everyone is delighted with [the Singapore] win,” Alonso told Ferrari’s official website. “That’s how it should be and I’m happy too, even if I know the hard part is still ahead of us. “These two consecutive wins have reduced the gap that had built up but we are definitely not leading yet. Now it starts getting serious, we will have to experience some pain and it is time for everyone to give their all, without taking a single backward step.
“There are still five drivers in the hunt for the title. So many times this year we have seen that the situation can change really quickly, so anything could still happen. What is certain is that if any of the five put a foot wrong, then it will be even harder for them. I stick with my belief that the key is to always finish on the podium and then do the maths in Abu Dhabi.” Despite keep his ambitions in check ahead of the final four races of the campaign, Alonso says he does
take heart from the fact that his Ferrari has appeared competitive on both low and high-downforce tracks in recent weeks. “The wins in Monza and Singapore inspire confidence, especially as they came after a difficult season, in which our championship chances have often hung by a thread,” he said. “Winning on two very different types of track confirms that our car is very versatile and so we can tackle the coming races without any fear.”
